Can't view .mov file thumbnails

Question: Can't view .mov file thumbnails

I am running Vista Home ... when in the folder I have my videos in I can see my .avi movies from my old HP dig cam but can not view the thumbnail of the newer .mov videos from my Kodak dig cam. This bugs me. I can play them in quicktime but would love to be able to see the thumbnail preview so sorting them would be a lot faster.

I've googled this and tried several things. Nothing has worked as of yet. Maybe I am not doing something right. I download and installed VLC and 3ivx. I do not want to change any .reg afraid I might mess something up. This machine is only 1 week old.

Someone please help me I don't know what else to do or where else to look.

Preferred Solution: Can't view .mov file thumbnails

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can't view .mov file thumbnails

As you may know, Windows Vista doesn't natively support mov files. VLC can play them, but its decoders are built-in and completely independent of Windows. 3ivx only decodes mov files (and mp4 files and 3gp files) encoded in MPEG-4 (it won't decode mov files in any other codec); not sure about its previewing capabilities.
What you would need is a filter (sometimes called splitter) to enable Windows (and Windows Media Player and Explorer etc.) to sparse mov files. The two most popular ones are Haali's and Gabest's filters. They're not perfect (have a few bugs - notably for mp4 and 3gp files) because they're third-party software, but they work for most files.
I believe Haali's filter is bundled with QuickTime Alternative, which you can get here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_qt.htm
During installation it will propose to uninstall QuickTime, but that's not necessary. You can have QuickTime and QuickTime Alternative work side by side just fine.
As for Gabest's filter it's built-in Media Player Classic (also installed with QuickTime Alternative). I think you could download the filter alone somewhere in here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
but I'm not sure how to install it and register it with Windows.

I'm running Windows 7 x64, and I can't see any video file thumbnails (ex: .avi, .flv, etc) of the files in my My Videos folder. All video clips work in VLC and WMC.

Addendum: I've tried to solve this problem by downloading the K-Lite Codec for x32 and x64 (as suggested to a user in a different thread), but as seen below, this solution only worked for the .mkv and .wmv files.

Can anyone offer up another solution?

Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

My first worry is that I see you have not installed SP2 yet, is there a reason for that?

I am running WinXP Pro and when I use any image editor to open pics from "My Pictures" directory, I keep getting a "thumbnail" view, when I would rather have a "Details" view.

In windows explorer, the directory (all directories) is showing up as "Details", which I have set up as the default view in the folder options, but this problem only occurs when I choose "Open" from the "File" menu.

It is no big deal, I can switch to "Detail" view, but I would like to have that there by default, if at all possible. Maybe working with group policies can help, but I don't know where to go in the administrative templates.

Answer:I don't want to view thumbnails

Windows XP has folders designed for specific files for better (more like hinder) use. For example C:\My Music is designed to show Artist, Track Number etc (a bit like the list in WMP), and C:\My Pictures has the thumbnail views to see the pictures like in an album.

Since My Pictures is a default Windows XP folder I don't know if you can change the default, but I know it can be done with folders you create. There is an option in Folder options to change it to normal view. I'm not at home right now so I cannot check myself but I think the option might be something like Picture Tasks

It's for a shared folder. I can connect with it as can my wife. Inside the folder are subfolders, each with video files and images. Each subfolder has a single image set to it via the proper Properties>Customize>Folder Pictures-Choose File method.

If I access the folder, the subfolders show the single image as the thumbnail as intended. However, when my wife accesses it, its the usual thumbnail collage of items within the subfolder. We've tried setting the images in the same manner from her account, however nothing happens. All we're trying to do is set the subfolders up so that when she opens the folder, each subfolder thumbnail has a specified image for it. Again, it works as it should for me, but not for my wife.

I suspect some permissions issue, however I've checked every possible setting. Public access, permissions, account type level, there's no apparent reason why this should be happening.

Hey guys,

after upgrading from XP to Win8, I've probably already spent hours removing most of the little bits and unnecessary pieces of UI changes they implemented. I'm pretty much done, but there's one thing left.

See, the problem is with the view and thumbnail functionality. XP would only display preview thumbnails of pictures if you rightclicked in a folder and selected View->Thumbnails. In Win8, I like to use View->Big symbols because I find the Medium symbols to be kinda small, but then of course Windows automatically starts creating thumbnails of pictures and previews of folder contents. Now I know I can prevent that if I just switch to a smaller icon size or disable it in Folder->View->Options->View Tab->check "Always show icons instead of thumbnails". But this change seems to be global, it prevents any thumbnail functionality anywhere on the computer. Seems kind of dumb if the only choice is between "if you want thumbnails just in certain places, you better get used to smaller icons everywhere" or "if you want big icons, you better get used to have no thumbnails anywhere", especially since that choice wasn't present in XP since the Big icons and Thumbnail view were actually the same in size

My question basically is: is there any kind of way for me to have Big Icons view while activating the thumbnails only in certain folders?

Answer:How to have the old XP behavior of view as->thumbnails?

Hello, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I don't know why, and I can't seem to fix it either. If I view a web page with clickable thumbnails, i can not see them. But if I look at the page information, I can see all the anchor tags for each picture. It happens using Netscape, Firefox and IE. It seems my computer is missing something to make these anchors actually show up as thumbnails on the web page.

I tried searching this forum to see if anyone else had this problem and I can't find it.

Any suggestions of what I should check?

I am running Windows XP if that helps.

Thanks.

Hi,
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).

I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.

I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks for your help

Answer:View Thumbnails in Explorer

I am going to say that because the pics actually reside on OSX, windows is unable to create a thumnail cache. It does this to speed up the viewing time, however your windows really doesn't "own" the pics folder on OSX and may not be able to build this cache properly and therefore you would not have any thumnails. here is an excert from the mighty Wikipedia about it:

"Beginning with Windows Vista, thumbnail previews are stored in a centralized location on the system. This provides the system with access to images independent of their location, and addresses issues with the locality of Thumbs.db files. The cache is stored at %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer as a number of files with the label thumbcache_xxx.db (numbered by size); as well as an index used to find thumbnails in each sized database.
However, when browsing network shares with write permission, Windows Vista and Windows 7 store a Thumbs.db file in the remote directory instead of using the (local) central thumbnail cache. This can cause issues when deleting remote shares, as the directory will become locked for a period of time when selected as Windows Explorer automatically creates a remote Thumbs.db file.
Creating Thumbs.db files on remote shares can be disabled with a Group Policy setting"

Hope that makes some sense, it would seem that is the problem to me any way.

Hello again! I am having two very strange problems with my thumbnail view of certain files.

A. It seems that there is a gray overlay over files and folder which were made before a certain point in time.

Example:

Gray overlay on those folders and the pictures which were made before a certain date

B. For some reason, the images in a certain folder, which were made before another certain time, display a thumnail which is different than what the actual image is.

Example:

The image which is showing in the preview is the ACTUAL image of the file selected. The thumbnail of the file selected is a thumbnail for a different image in that folder

-Sigh- My computer problems are always so uncommon that they never seem to get fixed on this forum because no one has seem them before. Hopefully someone will know a way to fix this, because it is REALLY annoying.

Thanks in advance for any posts made. Hoping someone can help me :)

Answer:Thumbnails View Problems

Hi Linkhiei !

Run Windows Explorer (shortcut : windows key + e). Navigate to the folders for which the thumbnails are not displaying correctly. Go to tools => folder options => view. Check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide protected operating system files". Find the hidden thumbs.db file (which you can now see) and delete it. The thumbnails should be recreated next time you'll display the folder. If that worked you can reset the folder options to what they were before.

What sites? You mean "thumbnail" viewsd of videos on web host sites or YouTube?

I'm running Windows 98SE.

Following a big event I was designated the recipient of digital photos taken by several guests, with the task of picking "the best ones" and assembling a digital photo album. All told there are about 300 photos. However, many are similar shots. In order to be able to find and compare the similar shots, I need to have thumbnails of all the photos viewable at the same time. I tried the thumbnail feature in Windows Explorer, but for some reason many of the photos don't open as thumbnails, or take forever to do so.

Can someone please direct me to a photo viewing freeware or shareware that can show thumbnails and filename of all the pics. (As this is a one-time task, I'd rather not have to buy the software.)

I just upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise having had used XP for years. In addition, I have an 8tb server networked with a large collection of movies. With XP, I made each folder a thumbnail (.db file) so that each folder containing the movie would have a picture of the movie cover. My HTPC is still running XP, and of course, can view the thumbnails just fine. With Windows 7, I have tried everything. Basically, i can't get it to show the thumbnail (.db file) which is contained inside each movie folder.

I have changed the folder options to "always show icons, never thumbnails" so that it will show thumbnails. I have changed the local group policy editor to make sure that windows has the proper settings. There is even an option to" turn off the display of thumbnails and only display icons on network folders." This is disabled.

Basically, I just want to look and feel of XP with flat folders previewing .db files that are contained within each folder.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I have Windows 8 64 bit, Windows 8 Photo Viewer and various applications (e.g. Lightroom) to process Panasonic Lumix RAW files in .RW2 format.

I can't find a way of displaying the image thumbnails in Windows Explorer. I've tried to install various versons of Microsoft camera codecs but they don't install in Windows 8 64 bit.

Is there a solution to this?

Answer:How to View Panasonic RAW (.RW2) Image Thumbnails?

The Microsoft Camera Codec packs come through Windows Update in Windows 8/8.1. I've just looked and it appears the last one was December 2013, so I guess it depends on how old your Camera is.

If you scroll down to the 'References' section at the following link, you can see what Panasonic camera's were added in that update and also all the camera's supported up to that point.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (KB2899189):
Update adds support for many camera-specific file formats in Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1: December 2013

It's about time we had an ISO approved camera raw format standard, as it's looong overdue.

I had the EXACT same problem. I've attached the text below on how to fix it.

Good luck
By default, Windows XP will remember the view settings for the 400 most recently used folders. After that, XP will begin overwriting the data of the oldest folder, and its view setting will be lost. The information is stored in the registry by two keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

These keys can be modified to make XP remember more folder settings.

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools--Folder Options--View--Advanced Settings. Ensure that "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

Open Regedit and go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell.

Right-click on "Shell", then follow to New--Key--DWORD Value.

Name this item "BagMRU Size" (without quotation marks, but with a space between BagMRU and Size).

Double-click BagMRU Size, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

Now go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam.

Create another BagMRU Size DWORD Value for "ShellNoRoam". Again, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

You will have two "BagMRU Size" values equal to 0x000007d0 (2000).

Close the registry and reboot.

Windows XP will now remember 2000 folder view settings instead of 400

Always remember to back up your registry.

Hi,

I have this major problem with windows thumbnails not showing 99% of the times and it is driving me nuts. I work with pictures all day everyday and I need to see the thumbnails to find them easily and this dumb machine is not doing it any more.

I have tried numerous thing, uncheking all in performance tab, setting up a new user ( it works for a few minutes and then not), uninstalling all the programs I could uninstall, trying to delete the .DB files in appdata folder ( couldnt do it), using the disc cleanup utility with no go. I have malware bytes instaled on my system and in general it is working very good. I prefer to use the fastStone image viewer and it has been working great until lately.

I am not open to do a full instal but if I can repair my OS I have all the discs but not sure how to repaire witout a full install.

I am posting a few screen captures as well as the reults from minitool box here, and thank you all in advance.

Let me correct that subject line a bit. It happens in almost all Sub Folders. For example, This PC is an odd one. Sometimes it's in thumbnail view, other times it's in detail view. I suppose that depends on how you start This PC.
This started about 3 weeks ago. I've been so busy with tech problems, at the time I never thought about it being a long term issue. Had I known, I could have looked at my windows updates to see if there was an update around that time. But if it was a Windows update, I think lots of users would be throwing fits, so it must be something that was caused by a setting in another program.
I use the detail view on ALL of my folders. Even pictures and music, if I'm looking at those in Explorer, I want the detail view. I have programs for my audio files and my image files - then I will use a different view.
Well, I remember in the good old days, at least in XP, you could go into Folder Options and make changes and there was a bo you could check to Apply these changes to ALL folders? It was wonderful. Windows 10 doesn't have that option. But I figure one of you has had a similar issue, and I also figure one of you has found a solution.
I change the settings in every folder that I open, but it doesn't stay, and I've looked at all the options in the toolbar - There doesn't seem to be any option to save that view, let alone apply to ALL folders. This is driving me mad.
So, have any of you had this problem? Have any of you found a way to change settings for fol... Read more

Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.

I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Note: I prefer a solution that will not end up disabling video thumbnails for MP4 files. I still would like to see MP4 video thumbnails, if possible. If the video files themselves are problematic, I reckon Explorer should not crash and just not show the thumbnails.

Hello all,
I have what I consider to be a rather unique situation. I have recently been trying to restore an old, uncropped version of a file from about 10 years and about 3 computers ago, naturally impossible under general circumstances. However, the thumbnail for the file still shows the original version, while opening the image in windows media viewer or ms paint reveals that the file in fact contains the new version.

My query was since the thumbnail seems to be saving the original non-cropped version, has it kept a copy of the old file? If so, can the old version be opened so I can view it? I lack information about thumbnails to know whether this is possible or impossible.

Thanks for any assistance.

Answer:Viewing source file for thumbnails.

You would need a copy of the original file. A thumbnail is just a smaller version and does not contain this file. The best you could do is resize the image to whatever size is needed but the quality of the image would suffer.

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

My hard disk c: have 93.6 GB free out of 139 GB
And i tried already in the menu: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View and then unchecked Always show icons, never thumbnails. But it didn't help much.

I did new windows 10 clean install today and not yet installed new updates since there was no space on C: so i startec lean up some stuff and so far i have 93.6 GB free space. Maybe the problem is that i need first to install all the updates ?

I tried now to go drive D and same problem most of the images without preview.

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Hi, I have a Windows Vista and I'd like all file types from all Media players to display a thumbnail of the video in Windows Explorer as opposed to just showing an icon of the file type. The problem is that in Vista, it only shows thumbnails of Windows Media Player videos and not videos that use VLC Media Player (except .VOB which it does show) or Quicktime. I've done some research online and I've seen that I need to merge a Registry file into the Registry Editor with certain Registry keys in it, so I tried doing it for .MP4 files:
----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{3D1975AF-0FC3-463d-8965-4DC6B5A840F4}]
@=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
@="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"
----------------------------------------------------------
After I entered the above into the Registry I restarted my PC, and nothing happened, the .MP4 videos still show no thumbnails.

Any suggestions or help is welcome and thanked in advance!

Hi everyone,

I have used a bunch of tutorials from this site over the last few years and never joined up. However, I am infuriated at windows 7 not letting me get my own way with custom icons! Infuriated enough to sign up.

All I wanted was a custom folders icon (for ALL folders) which can be done easy enough, but the catch 22, in order to do this properly, one must turn off thumbnails (organise > folder options > view > always show icons, never thumbnails).

This means you end up with a window with a couple of hundred identical jpeg/png/whatever icons... not very useful when you need a quick overview of contained images within the folder.

So, we turn the thumbnails back on, ah thats better, we can quickly see our images again! Oh wait, those disgusting yellow overlayed thumbnail folders are back!

There needs to be another option in windows 7:

Always show icons (folders only), show file thumbnails

Would be great but I can't find any way to achieve this. Even iconpackager can't do this and I bloody bought it! All that happens is that you end up with your nice custom icon, with a little bit of photo thumbnail sticking out the bottom of it, so you have to 'always show icons, never thumbnails'... well that was a waste of money!

I would install linux instead if it were more useful, changing ALL icons is easy and makes sense in that, and takes about 5mins! I have a lovely custom theme, of course, let down by those yellow folder icons that make me want to puke!

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

Hi,

I have unchecked the option to 'show icons instead of thumbnails' (view>options>folder options) and I have checked 'show icons' (performance>advanced) but still I get icons instead of thumbnails. I have closed and restarted file explorer multiple times to no change. I have posted the screenshot below to show the current settings. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Answer:Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

I've been googling around but can't seem to find an answer to this seemingly simple question. The documents and spreadsheets on my desktop show up as a thumbnail preview of the file (which is kinda stupid because all of the documents and spreadsheets look the exact same). So I want these to just show the Word or Excel icon instead. I know you can go to:

Explorer>Tools>Folder Option>View>Files and Folders>"Always show icons, never thumbnails"

But then my picture files just show the Windows Picture Viewer icon instead of the picture thumbnail. I'm just wondering if there's a way to assign icon or thumbnail settings to specific file types or extensions? I'd like my pictures to have thumbnails but all other file types to show only icons. I'm currently using Windows 7 and system details are in the sig...

Answer:(Win7) How to show icons for some file types and thumbnails for others?

If you don't explicitly tell Word or Excel to save a thunbmail of the file along with the file, it will use the default Word/Excel document icon (which happens to look like a document from either of those programs). Can't you just change the default icon to something else?

To answer your question, though, no, I don't think it's possible.

I got a new computer with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I find it very annoying that in all the Open File dialog boxes and even Windows Explorer there does not seem to be a selection under the View menu to show thumbnails of image files. Even when I select Contents and highlight the file it still only shows a generic icon. Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help

Answer:No Thumbnails in Open File Dialogs or Windows Explorer - Why??

Hello David, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you have thumbnail previews enabled.Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable
If you do, then double check to make sure that you have Windows Photo Viewer set as the default program with all of it's associations.Default Programs - Set a Program's Default Associations
Hope this helps,

Previously this was just a minor annoyance but now I need a fix. In many of my folders I am missing file names for my files when they're viewed in Thumbnail mode. I have no idea what's causing this to happen, and I've looked everywhere I can think of for a fix.

Can anyone point me to a solution?

I guess I'm not able to delete my thread so I'll edit to post the solution instead. It's a result from holding shift while opening a folder in Thumbnail mode. To correct the missing file names I simply had to hold shift while opening the folder for a second time. Annoying.

Recently a symbol or "mini icon" has started to appearing over lower-left quadrant of file thumbs. It is a blue ~square with 2 horizontal white chevrons, ">>". They cover about 1/4 of each xLg photo icon/ thumbnail. I'd like to get rid of these pesky & unwanted mini-icons. A quick screen print of photo files, as thumbnails, is now useless because so much of each photo is obscured.

Answer:Unwanted symbol appearing over file thumbnails (Win 10 syst)

Hi Davenjac, and welcome to TSG.

Are you running Norton360 or some other kind of backup software? It can be disabled in Norton 360's settings by unchecking the "Backup Status Indicators" check box.

I've ran Disk Cleaner to delete the thumbnails.

I've deleted the thumbnail caches via command prompt (Admin).

I've gone through View/Options/View and made sure "Always show icons, never thumbnails" was not checked.

And still, I cannot get thumbnails for my .mp4 files. All I get is that movie clicker symbol blue icon.

Anything I haven't tried yet?

TIA

I didn't have much of thumbnails for videos until I installed VLC/Video LAN player. Win10 doesn't come with much for videos.

Hi,

I recently had an unfortunate incident with some spyware (Security Shield) and in cleaning spyware and viruses off, I've noticed that I can no longer view thumbnails or set wallpaper via Personalization or Right Click -> Set as Desktop Background. The first screenshot shows what I see when trying to set a background via Personalization and the second screenshot shows a folder view that should show thumbnails.

Has anyone else had this problem? What worked for you?

Thanks in advance!
-RyGuy

Answer:Cannot view thumbnails/wallpaper and cannot set wallpaper

Welcome
It seems that we have had the same problem just a short time ago. Help was offered by our own Brink, who is one of the best in these areas.
Desktop and thumbnails view error
We can use that as our strarting point and try to offer additional help.
If the above does not work, the problem may be a registry problem. Registry may have been changed by the virus.

If you set up a new adminstrative account, do you still have the problem?

For example, for MKV videos Windows 7 shows no more information than it does for text files. I'd like to have thumbnails and data like duration, pixel dimensions, video and audio bitrate etc. as it shows for other types.

I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
The funny thing is that windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago ... can I somehow set this back to the normal winxp picture and fax displaying thing?

Hi all,

I want to be able to view the files that I've accessed in File Explorer so that I can review (and preferably search through) them at any time. Essentially what I want is the "Recent items" menu that comes up on the File Explorer homepage, but the version that doesn't just stop with the last 20 items I've accessed. (It would be even more ideal if the list of files would include those that I've created/modified/saved from other programs, but I'm not sure that File Explorer itself would be able to keep track of files that I didn't actually open through FileExplorer).

Is there any way to do this? I have searched through old posts, but haven't found anything.

Thanks for your help!

Windows XP & IE 8 .
Whenever I add an attachment to my emails, and even here on your website when I uploaded the attached pics, the 'Choose to Upload' pop-up window containing (in this case) my pics ALWAYS (but never used to) opens in the Details mode instead of Thumbnails where I can actually view the pics to be attached prior to attaching them.
I would like the default setting for this occurrence to obviously be in the Thumbnails mode.
In a related issue I would also like to be able to load more than one pic at a time when attaching pics to emails, etc...
Is there such a setting?
Thanks for the assistance.

Answer:Default Settings for 'Choose File To Upload', Displays 'Details' vs 'Thumbnails'

The default is list, not details and no you can't change it that I know of and I'm pretty sure if not absolutely. I wish there was. One of those silly Windows things.
As to your second question, some websites employ technology that allows multiple uploads. The flash uploader here for instance. It's not something in XP that one can change.

I admit, I love Vista and since drivers have become stable, Iíve not had any big issues, but there is one thing that Iíve been trying to figure out for a while now with no success and its really bugging me.

Live preview thumbnails seem to go ďblankĒ after a while. If an app has been running for a while, the live preview gets replaced by a static icon. Seems to be some sort of resource management issue, but Iíve been trying to figure out if there is some sort of configuration that can be adjusted to increase some sort of resource limit or turn it off altogether.

Answer:Vista Live Thumbnails become Dead Thumbnails

i've formatted, but last i checked, i had realtime previews of windows, only if the window was open

if i minimized the window, i would only get static images. Are you having the same problem, that might be the way it's supposed to work, i' m not sure

Hiya. I'm trying to disable the Thumbnails for those ugly "Live Folders". However, I can't seem to figure out how to turn them off without also disabling the thumbnails for individual image files.

Does anybody know how to disable *just* the Live Folder thumbnails?
