Preferred Solution: Vista Eula Link Must Read!!! Read About What Windows Defender Will Do To You!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Vista Eula Link Must Read!!! Read About What Windows Defender Will Do To You!

Nice. I had scrutinized it hard enough already with a steel hat, so I'm still safe.

Hehe, Veesta is a beast! Most corps, even NIST, MIT, UDoD and ASUS as the largest MB MFG detests it. Not fit for mass consumption eh.

Isn't it wonderful how you CANNOT maximise the windows that EULA's appear in?
Sometimes most of it comes in CAPITAL letters, as well.

Am I being cynical? Or is this a deliberate plot so we don't make the effort to read EULA's in full?

Your opinions are canvassed. Bazza

Answer:EULA's, to read or not to read?

EULA's, otherwise known as Licencing Agreements. You know, those things you have to click on "I agree" before you can carry on installing most programs. Baz

I tried reading the EULA and it left me frustrated and confused. I am running an OEM Windows XP 5.1 Home SP2 on my current Emachine. The OS is licensed to me by Microsoft.I want to know if it is possible to load this OS onto a CD or HD for use in another computer that is for my personal use.
Is it even possible to copy an OEM installed OS? I do have the restore cd's that came with the original emachine. Is the OS on one of those disks?
Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm a novice at all this.

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

The main article by Peter Gutmann from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Auckland, New Zealand (contained in the .mht file) raises a number of very important questions about the extent to which Microsoft has gone to satisfy copyright owners during the development of Windows Vista. The article raises vital issues concerning your rights when you purchase a computer -- including the associated hardware, especially the video card -- and install software. Take special note of issues such as video card drivers that are overly complex and WILL EXPIRE (if the rights to which are not renewed by the manufacturer), making images fuzzy or unviewable. The new DRM system will also spill over to users of earlier versions of Windows.

Gutmann points out, "Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order to provide content protection for so-called 'premium content', typically HD data from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sources. Providing this protection incurs considerable costs in terms of system performance, system stability, technical support overhead, and hardware and software cost. These issues affect not only users of Vista but the entire PC industry, since the effects of the protection measures extend to cover all hardware and software that will ever c... Read more

Try using a different browser. What browser are you using?
Of course it could also be malware blocking you from getting there, so if using an alternative browser makes no difference, do try booting into safe mode with networking. Let us know how you get on (Try a different browser first!)

i have a 6 year old computer that has died(M/B failure). It was running vista 32 bit with a lot of word files that I need. I am thinking of replacing it with a newer 1150 pin m/b and i5 cpu and appropriate ddd3 memory and load win 7 64 bit onto my old hdd. Will the newer operating system recognize the word 2002 program and the word files? will it even see the various partitions that exist on the hdd? The word files are very important.
Hoping someone can help me. Regards old dog

Answer:will windows 7 64 bit read vista 32 bit files

There should be a way to open those word files without any major hassle depending on the actual file format used...

Assuming that the HDD itself is not damage, you should easily be able to access the data many ways even if the OS itself i no longer functioning.

For example the easiest way would be to build your PC and install Win7 onto a new HDD. Once you do that, attach the old HDD as a slave drive and bam, ya should see that drive and access it like normal.
If it is just the M/B failed, you could still use the current OS to boot the vista even on that new MB (sometimes it works), and simply backup your data

If you only have the one HDD and it will not boot windows, you could use Hirens or some other bootable disc to open a virtualized windows environment to access the information and transfer the data off of it onto a flash drive or something.
Depending on your partition setup you could transfer the data onto a single partition and then install Win7 onto the other partition.

**BEFORE** You install Win7 on that old drive, you need to retrieve the data first, otherwise the data will be all lost.

Windows Vista is supposed to have transformed our computing experience, however many people are stating that the operating system is a total letdown. This is simply because many of the features that were promised when the operating system was in development were simply dropped at the last minute or were phased out. This led to much disappointment between consumers.

My new laptop came with Windows Vista, however I soon removed it and returned to good old Windows XP. My reasoning for this is that Vista simply didn’t have the functionality that I required for such a resource hungry operating system. The best thing is my laptop is now much faster it is running Windows XP once again.

One of the most important features that I was looking forward to was WIN FS. This was supposed to speed up and dramatically improve our user experience; however this was postponed meaning that the main drive of Vista was effectively removed.

I used Windows Vista for around 3 months until I got so frustrated with the frequent crashes that I simply had to revert to Windows XP. I simply couldn’t the lack of software support and the fact that the next service pack seems to be put back further and further.
Office 2007 on the other hand is great. I would suggest that everyone upgrades to this software package because it even works on Windows XP. I love the entire new interface and the fact that it’s now so much easier to use.

1. Is there a way to enable a dialog confirming log off? I use the classic start menu configuration (I find it much easier to use), with "Log off ..." enabled. However, accidentally pressing this instantly logs the user off, instead of prompting for an OK like XP and earlier. This is really frustrating sometimes. Any advice?

2. Vista is BSODing randomly and at random times. The default Business 32-bit Dell install that came with my laptop was REALLY bad (it would BSOD literally every 15-20 minutes, each time with a different, random error), so I upgraded to 64-bit Business. The BSODs are much less frequent, but they're still occuring sometimes. Most prevelant is during boot or right after logon. I have all the latest updates, including the non-Windows Update reliability ones. There seems to be no pattern to when they occur, and the error is different each time. Has anyone else had similar problems with Dell laptops and Vista?

Other than that my system is running fine. Loving Vista, except for these few little annoyances!

Answer:Windows Vista issues, read inside!

"little annoyances" Frequent crashes are pretty major. Click the start button and search for Reliability and Performance Monitor (just type rel and it should be the first option). Click Reliability Monitor on the left tab and post the cause of the failures if you need help sorting it out. There is no reason why Vista x64 won't run stable, other than an add on program or bad hardware (or malware infestation).

I don't see a policy in Vista for a default prompt when logging off. There might be one or a registry setting but I can't find it.

there should be somewhere where you can add port. look for it, it should ask your what kind of port you want to open, and what address do you want to forward it to. meaning if you have a computer running a web hosting, and the internal address is

then you have to add a port 80 and forward it to the address mentioned above

Take a close look at the URLs for the malware links; they are all random collections of letters and numbers, and they're all Chinese domains. Users of Google (and other web search engines) need to pay close attention to the links that are being offered, and avoid anything that just doesn't look right, and certainly avoid 'nonsense' domains like those in the Sunbelt screenshots.

FWIW, a quick check using Windows Live Search does *not* result in a slew of malicious sites.

If Google wants to be the Sun around which we all revolve then they are going to have to clean up their act, and fast.

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

Hi, I'm sort of new to forums, but I have a bit of a pickle, I have a red shield with a white x in it that resembles the windows defender icon in my system tray, when I hover over it it says "Your computer is infected !" I followed all the directions in the read & run me first thread, and nothing seemed to help, I'm attaching all the logs except counterspy as I couldn't find a way to get it to output a log in text format or anything, it said 0 malware found in everything except in my cookies there was 2 that it deleted.

Using outlook 2003 and a pop3 server to access my webmail email, i am able to send and recieve. However when i read my emails and close outlook the items remain unread when i check outlook later. This happens quite often and is very annoying... any help is appreciated.

windows xp SP2

2 gig ram

Athlon 64 FX - 53: 2.4ghz

Answer:Outlook 2003: not marking read items as read

Outlook Express has a tab to fix this-maybe Outlook has the same.
check Mark Messages READ after displaying (add 5 seconds)

Maybe that seconds number has been raised above the time you take to scan messages. OE doesnt care IF you peek at a message-it cares HOW long you stare at it.

My CD Drive has started giving me problems.
It doesn't read all the CD I put in (Particularly Audio CDs).

It Plays DVDs fine.
I'm also unable to burn CDs as the system doesn't detect a CD.

Any suggestions on what I should be doing?

Answer:Satellite A100-033 - ODD doesn't read all CDs but read DVDs

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

I already know how to create a "read" receipt for sent emails. From my understanding, when you set the function, I will received read receipts for all email that was read. I was wondering if this setting could be set on individual emails instead of all of them. Thanks!

Answer:Read receipt for read emails in Outlook 98

In the compose area of Outlook go to Options and check the box for that email.

Greetings. I would like to find out whether customers read my emails, but without obligating them to use a "read receipt" dialog box. Is there a way I can do this?

I know Constant Contact offers that as part of their service, but I would rather save the money.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:how can I confirm email read without using read receipt?

There are other ways to get confirmations, especially ones that spammers use, but I am not keen on posting them on the forums.

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

Answer:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

This is the error message but control alt delete doesn't restart it.
I hit F11 and it starts in Windows Vista(recovered). It will open up and I can do anything from there, but very very slow. I do not know how to get it to boot up properly.

I have run all hardware checks, everything passes,
Virus program is secure.
I can get into the Performance information and Tools and it shows critical status for Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Diagnostics-Performance - Boot performance Monitoring. It also shows Error for Shutdown Performance.
If you could walk me thru the fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:windows vista "a disk read error has control alt delete to restart..

1)Disk read error could mean HDD beginning to fail (need to check the SMART data).

2) You're info on the errors isn't enough to go on - need more details on critical status & errors.

3) Can you do a system restore or have a BU image of the HDD that you can restore, from before the prob began?

I've seen that "type" error - maybe not verbatim, but for either when HDD is failing, or even a loose / bad HDD cable. Could check those are snug. Can unseat the cables & reseat them. If don't know what you're doing w/ the cables, either leave alone, or read up on how to BE CAREFUL working w/ the cables.

I've seen cables go bad for NO reason - no one touched them; just one day were "flaky."

You could break sockets on the mobo if get rough. Cables themselves are cheap.

Has anyone any tips please!!!

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Make sure to select the Autoclean option. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

After burning a DVD today on my Micro Solutions DVD-/+RW I could suddenly no longer read DVDs on that Drive. I have no idea what happen. At first I thought the drive was gone, but I put a CD in it and it reads it just fine.

I uninstalled the driver and the associated programs (i.e. powerDVD etc) and then reinstalled them and then re-did the UDB connection to the computer - it auto-detected it, and then said new device ready to use (using XP by the way). Still didn't work for DVDs, just CDs. I also updated the driver - still nothing.

Under my computer it is listed as a DVD-/+RW, so I cannot understand why it won't play DVDs, just CDs. It's as if the ability to play/burn DVDs has suddenly be locked out.

Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thank you.

Answer:DVD-RW suddenly cannot read DVDs, can read CDs

The device manager says it's working properly.

The problems occured after attempting to erase a DVD+RW using Deepburner. Basically I burnt a DVD and then tried out Deepburner to see if it would erase the DVD+RW. When I attempted to eject the DVD it wouldn't eject- the green light just kept flashing a couple times. Eventually I had to turn my PC off and unhook the USB connection and power connection and then do everything back up and restart the computer. Finally the DVD would eject, but since then will not read any DVDs, just CD's and CD-ROM.

The model is an external (USB) Micro-Solutions 2244010 (but really a NEC_DVD-RW, ND-1300A).

I updated the firmware to 1.0A about 6 months ago. I never had a single problem with this drive before or after updating the Firmware.

I really have no idea how or why this could have happened. I can play the DVDs in my other DVD drive just fine.

Please help.

I have some older DVD-R that I had burned data on a few years ago. My Optical Drive on my main PC can't read them. but a drive on a different PC can read them fine.

My main PC can read all regular DVDs (i.e. movies) just fine. I cleaned the lens, deleted the "up/down" registry entries as recommended. Still no solution.

the only hint I have the explorer shows that drive with a symbol of 2 people (see attachment). not sure if this stands for some group policy.

All the data were burned with a different DVD-writer in Germany (some 9 years ago). i don't think it is a region setting issue since this DVD-drive can read original DVDs from all regions. But there may be another clue?
I read about how DVD-R degrade over time... but since my other PC can read them that likely is not the problem.

The only thing I haven't done that was suggested was the realignment. First, I never dropped it (it has been in my PC for years and that didn't move). Second, it seems to read normal DVDs fine. It was suggested if re-alignment really is necessary, other things are out of whack and buying a new one may be better.
I could buy a new one, but also don't want to be defeated by the machine. and the problem coudl be related to windows....

Answer:can't read burned DVD-R, but can read normal DVD

It is possible the DVD-R may be incompatible with your drive. You can search online for a firmware update for the drive. You can re-write to a compatible DVD-R on your other machine perhaps.

Now post a HijackThis log file as an attachment to your message. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

Ok, on my forum one of the members asked "I just got 2 new sticks of kingston ddr400 C2.5, can I keep the old one also or do I have to get rid of it?"

Since the old stick is kingstong ddr400 C3, I said ya just put the two new sticks into the ddr slots and put the old stick in the single slot.

my mod says:
"Only issue I can see is the different clock cycles, may get read errors. try it and if it starts acting funny, take the original one out. if the prob goes away, then choose which set you want to stay with."

I disagree with him, what do ya'll think? I said maybe it would if you were changing out different brands and timings, or using a brand that the mobo isn't exactly compatible with.. In that case you'd get more than a "read" error.. Anyways, since it's using the C3 in the single slot and not along side of another DDR stick, I think it'll be fine..

btw, the member who was needing to put this ram in, put it in as I directed and all is well just like I.. KNEW!" hehe

Hello, I recently installed a game which came on a DVD disk
The install had a few problems, and it needed to restart several times. (It looked as though it was unable to read the disc, which resulted in a failed install)
Eventually it installed and all was fine.
The game needs a disc check to start up, and so it must be able to read the DVD before the game can start. It was able to read it, and I quit and restarted the game several times with no problems. However, I tried another game restart and the launcher could NOT read the DVD ("no disk in drive" error). I re-inserted the disc and it worked.

Later, I had the same trouble multiple times. It worked one final time, but I later tried to start the game (and thus read the disc) and it refused to acknowledge a disc was in the drive. I restarted, I removed filters by editing the registry, I uninstalled the DVD drive drivers and even tried blowing air into the drive. I have also tried microsoft's "fix it" software for the drive. None of these methods resolved the problem.

The drive cannot read any other DVDs either (opening them from "computer" just opens the disk tray and states there is no disc in the drive)
The drive IS able to read CDs, which obviously means something (I'm not sure if there are two different lasers or something?)
For this reason I'm leaning towards a software fault, but I don't know what to do to remedy it.

The drive in question: TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H653F AT... Read more

well i have run into a problem with scanning and cleaning steps: 1 a/b
on the " READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal" post. first of all i dont have a softwear antivirus program (yet) so i usually use trend micro. anyways i cannot run trend's scan in normal opperating mode. i just get errors, a AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 6.1.9844.0 Offset: 00001d90 error to be exact. after that IE restarts and im back to about blank. the virus couldent be doing that could it? then on further i cant access any explorer window. period. it also creates arrors and restarts explorer. in safe mode i was actually able to get trend micro to work and it found 22 some odd junk files (dlls i think) that i keep finding in my prossesses list. to put it this way, i have been going back and fourth between apm, the cleaner, and about blaster to remove these junk prosseses and they just come back with with what seems to be randomly generated names. back on point, i could not get symantec's online scan to work at all in safe mode. the applet (dont know what else to call it) just hangs there for along time till it come up not avalable.
im planning to put an old version of norton AV and getting all the updates the doing a full scan to see what happens. would agv AV work also? on the same note, cwshredder has come back with nothing everytime ive used it

Hey all,
Well, I had some how downloaded av.exe and have had nothing but problems. I even had AVG running at the time and it missed it some how. I used a restore point and that seemed to get rid of it, or so I thought. Unfortunately, I lost Microsoft Excel and Word. I don't know how, but the shortcuts go no where. Then today (three days later) I started getting Windows Antivirus popups again... or was it Microsoft? I forget... but I knew it was av.exe. So, I tried another restore and when it rebooted, AVG found av.exe this time. I removed it and not even internet explorer worked. I then did a full restore and this time I got Internet explorer working.
So, since the last time (a few years back) that I had a virus, you guys really helped, I came here and searched for av.exe (as it's still in the system). I found a thread referring the OP to the READ ME FIRST thread, which was what you referred me to last time too. I started following it and got to running Super Antispyware. I ran it and it found two locations of av.exe. Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of where as the directions stated to reboot and then go to preferences and copy the log. Well, the program is gone after the reboot. The shortcuts are there as are the start menu items. But when I click on any of them I get a popup

My CD-RW drive broke, and Dell replaced it with a new one for free (warranty).

However, the new drive is 48x read but the old one was 52x read. Will this have an impact on anything?

Also, I have 52x CD-R's. Will they work in a 48x drive?

Answer:Solved: Difference between 48x read and 52x read?

There will be no noticeable difference on anything. Chances are that the old one rarely, if ever, actually read at 52.

The 52x on the CD-R's is a measure of their sensitivity and shows the maximum speed that they can be written. Some CD's have a minimum as well, and that is usually more important if they are "high-speed" CD-R's since they won't write properly at very slow speeds. But your CD-R's will write fine at speeds between 4x and 52x, as a minimum range, so there is nothing to worry about.

Tried doing a search for this and came up empty. My problem in a nutshell is that I'm having difficulty reading data CD's. I was re-installing my OS due to too much corruption of data and viruses so I'm start from a scratch in terms of OS files.

To be noted: Manufacturer's install disks used ghost to install a new copy of the OS. Had to open and close the CD drive bay a few times in order to get the final CD be able to be read and complete the installation.

What I've tried:
update driver - no improvement
Uninstall Drivers and restart - no improvement
manually download driver - no improvement
tried using generic CD Drivers - no improvement

OS: Windows XP home.
Downloaded all updates. inc: SP2
Emachine T3065
Memory: 2GB

After browsing around google for a while, I came across a similar problem which suggested the cabling might be the cause of the error. as audio/video are past through different pars of the cable than data.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Can't read data cd. can read audio

Ignore the cable issue, that's unlikley to be the problem
Analog audio is on a different cable, but thats seldom used by any PC these days.

The clus here is that it was dying at the end of the install by the sound of it. The laser output may have decreased to the extent that audio only is recognised due to the better reflectivity.

Start thinking about a new drive, but you would have checked all the cables anyway one assumes?

I built a PC back in January and its been running great ever since.  Never had any hangups, freezes, or other issues with the build.  Two weeks ago my computer froze unexpectedly and upon restart I received a disk read error.  I tried several tips on the internet to fix it, and eventually the HDD stopped being detected by even the BIOS.  I bought a new HDD and reinstalled vista 64 ultimate and it's been running fine for about a week.  After receiving the disk read error again I updated my BIOS and it seemed to fix the problem for a few days.  Last night it happened again.I've read that this could be caused by a bad HDD, issues with Vista, bad memory, or an overheating issue.  When I run SpeedFan and other temp tools, my computer runs at max at 45-50C under load.  My PSU is still cool, as are all of the components within the case.It starts to freeze in WoW, but at random intervals.  It might be an hour, it might be 4 hours before I have any issues.  I've also had the problem when the computer was idling in vista.  I check the temperature of the system regularly while playing my games, and I doubt that is the issue. As this is a clean HDD with a clean install of vista and runs cool, I'm beginning to think it may be a memory issue.  The following are my system components:   Operating System: Windows Vista? Windows 98SE
Sony DDU 1621 dvd rom

I need a simple explanation that tells me how to get my dvd rom to read data disks. It only reads audio disks and opens all disks in Windows media player. I dont understand how associations work.

Help would be much appreciated

Answer:DVD Rom will only read do I get it to read data?

No it doesnt read dvd's, but I am not really concerned about that, I dont think I have the memory anyway (64 mb ram). My old cdrom had a mechanical problem and I needed something to read disks, so I bought it from a garage sale and I downloaded the software from the Sony site. It used to function normally and read data files.

I want to format the harddrive and I need to know that the dvd rom will read my win98 disk cos it isnt at the moment. I dont understand how to do anything in file where the problem lies? Or is it in the cdrom properties settings area.

Hope this triggers something in you........I appreciate your help

I have Toshiba Sat pro 6100 and the CD/DVD drive is SD-C2502 on winxp sp2.
The drive didnt read any CD/DVD initially.
After a DVD lens cleaner, it reads DVD but the drive cannot read any CD incl music CD's.

The error is 'windows cannot read from the disk. The disk may be corrupted or .....'.

I have 'took off the CD/DVD drive and reconnected' and the driver also seems to be OK.

Any suggestions or ideas ?

Answer:Satellite Pro 6100 -> DVD read is OK but cannot read any CD

This sound like a drive lens cannot calibrate properly and therefore the drive cannot read from the CD disks.
Mostly the drive replacement is necessary and inevitable. :(

Support from Microsoft ends on July 12th.

Answer:To Everyone Who Is Still Using Vista SP1 - Read!

All very true perhaps, but there's a large element of quite blatant scaremongering in that item too.
Those who not very computer savvy will be panicking uneccesarily after reading it, while microsoft & hardware manufacturer's will no doubt be hoping for a big boost in sales thanks to such articles.

Windows Vista security 'rendered useless' by researchers

took longer than I thought it would but it looks to me like microsoft is going to find itself unable to secure its OS

other OS's are likely also vulnerable if I'm understanding how they did this correctly

Answer:using vista? read this

I'm not surprised by it. Like you, I figured they would have found it out long before now.

The only way to have a completely safe OS is to have it in complete isolation.

Am using Google and have Vista...after downloading a .eml attachment, I cannot open it. What do I need to add to system?
Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV)
“The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left."

Answer:how to read .eml in Vista?

EML file types can be opened with a number of programs: EML File Extension - Open .EML files including, but not listed, Windows Mail. It can also be done by changing the file extension and viewed with Internet explorer as explained in the above article.

Here's how to associate an EML file with Windows Mail (which is probably how I would set it up unless you have a more sophisticated e-mail program that can accommodate that file type as listed above): How to Associate .EML Files and Attachments with Windows Mail or Outlook Express - About Email.

If you need to add a different program as the default for that file type, check out: Default Programs.

I suggested Windows Mail because it comes with Vista and you won't need to buy anything (or you can also use Internet Explorer as explained above which is again free but not as convenient as an e-mail program). Personally, I use Outlook 2007 but that is rather costly; however, I occasionally do use Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail (also free) for newsgroups and when I have problems with Outlook (especially synchronizing Outlook Connector) and have all three programs storing the emails and contacts so I have backups in case of a problem (but that level of redundancy is certainly not required - I just REALLY don't want to lose that information). There are many e-mail program choices out there - some free, some inexpensive, and some costly. Make sure whichever one you pick can read EML files (it should be in the program info... Read more

I created a disc in Vista on another computer, but when I put it in this one (Vista still), it shows that part of the disk is taken up iwth the blue line, but when I double click on it or right click and select Open, it only goes to a page askin gme to format it erasing all data.

All I want to do is to read what I already put on the disc. Any suggestions? Is there a finalization step I forgort when burning it? Except that it shows that some of the data is already taken up?

I have 4GB of memory installed on my MOBO and bios reads it fine but VISTA only reads 3GB'sHow do I get VISTA to read or use all the installed memory?

Answer:How do you get Vista to read all 4GB RAM

Hi, If you're using a 32 bit version of Windows Vista, then Windows can only access approximately 3.4 GB of RAM. To take advantage of all 4 GB, you'll need to upgrade to a 64 bit version of Windows.

Hi there,

I have burned many DVD (data) on my XP before I switch a computer. Now that I have a Vista x64, the CD drive won't read them. If I use ISOBuster I can see the track and extract them. But if I use Windows Explorer it will prompt me to "prepare blank disc"! Any help? I already finalize the disc and confimred it. Do a hardware diagnostic check and turns out nothing went wrong.

By the way, how can I make Vista not look for application if I insert other CD. (By that I mean just open the CD rather than look for autoplay, I already disable autoplay.)

CD Drive - TSSTCorp H653Q
OS - Vista Home Premium x64
System - HP Pavillion s3600z

Answer:Vista Won't Read DVD Burned in XP

It could be the brand of disc that your Vista machine doesn't like. I had to change brands when I got my Vista, the CD's I used on my XP and WinME machine would read but I couldn't write to them in Vista.
Try another brand and see if that makes a difference, that's all I can offer in the way of help

I have an acer aspire 5610 with vista installed on it that can read my 4gb micro sdhc card. I recently added XP to my second partion and now have a dual boot configuration. The sd card is still readable in vista but for some reason not in xp. It's the same machine so I don't know why it doesn't work in xp. they both can read 2gb microsd cards btw. i tried different drivers and right now both os's have the same drivers and still no luck. the card reader in this laptop is actually not rated to read sdhc cards but in vista it does just not in xp. Does this make any sense?

Vista's got great documentation no? Anyways, since I'm a software dev (for Lua) I need access to some of the file and folders in the Program Files dir. Now the fact that I'm an admin doesn't seem to bother windows as it keeps reverting the file attributes on folders and files, this makes using an automated SVN a *****.
Any ideas? I read somewhere that I needed to add myself as the object's owner, if that is correct then either I did it wrong or I screwed up somewhere (which amounts to the same thing).

Have had e-machine with Vista for 7 weeks and already have a problem with ErrorSafe in its differing forms. Thanks to major geeks I wouldn't have even known it was a problem, nor got my printer to work or been able to get antivirus after my ISP provider told me to get rid of Mcaffee when I started with them because they provided it-for every OS except Vista. Anyway as bewildering as it looks I figure I have to go through READ & RUN ME FIRST to get rid of it. Of course I stumble at knowing whether I have MSConfig Startup Mode. I then go to step 4 and figure I can learn how to download tools needed to folder and not install until told. Then it starts to strike me as I read on that all of these great instructions go for Windows 95,98...up to XP which has been the problem I've had with getting anything done on this darn computer. Can't even print coupons off the net for the grocery store. So do I try and go with the process trying to use the XP info if possible? Is there a form of READ & RUN ME FIRST out there that has the steps for Vista? Do I gladly volunteer to be a test case since my computer has so little baggage on it? I have faith in Major Geeks. Please help.

Answer:Vista and READ & RUN ME FIRST b-4 asking for support

All of the READ & RUN ME applies to vista with the below exceptions/requirements

CCleaner works, but its best to set the Privilege level on this app to Run as Adminstrator, so all areas and registry locations are scanned fully, also helps with removal of junk. Do this via right clicking the shortcut on the Desktop/Start menu choose compatability and tick the privilige Level to "Run as Administrator"
to run GetRunKey and ShowNew you must disable UAC
the two online scanners (BitDefender and PandaActiveScan) cannot be run on Vista
Hijackthis will run but it does not have access to the Hosts file if run normally. UAC will block its scan, to scan, you need to right click the Hijackthis/Analyze exe and Choose "Run as Administrator".

Ok, I have been to all the "XP crashing" type forums imaginable.

Here is the story - if you can fix it - you truly are a genious!

6 months ago I bought an Acer Computer. Amd Quad Core. 8Gb ram. pre-loaded with Vista. ATI Radeon HD 3650 Graphics.

I loaded an clean copy of XP Home and for last 6 months, could boot into either.

4 days ago something happened. I Reinstalled Vista completely. Then I shrank a Partition for Xp. I loaded Xp. Put all neccessary drivers in. It booted fine. HERE IS WHERE IT STARTS TO GET UGLY. Upon reboot, I get to XP Login screen and as fast as lightning, the puter goes right back to the Login screen.

Here is EVERYTHING I have tried and only one thing so far is working, but it is NOT the way it should work.

Clean installs of Vista and XP.

Safe mode will not work - Restore does does not work.

The only WAY to get XP to load all over again is to boot from the Disc. I choose to clean install, then choose Recovery. This brings ABSOLUTELY everything back! And working!!!! However, when I go to restart my puter, the whole thing starts all over again! Then I need to recover AGAIN! This process has happened many times now over last 4 days.

Also, I dd attempt reinstall of Vista and then XP too and still the same thing happens with XP. ABSOLUTELY NO new hardware has been added or changed.

I stay off-line for installs.

So bottom line - Only by recovery disc, will XP come on AGAIN properly and then upon restart, XP fails to login. There is a... Read more

I burnt a CD under win vista. My old laptop with win 98 se could not read this CD. what is wrong and how to fix ? thanks

Answer:win 98 se cannot read Cd written by win vista

Which program did you use to burn?Did you finalize the disc?I think you should finalize the disc if you want Windows 98 SE to be able to read your dvds. Most importantly, you should burn the dvds at once, not multiple times. You should not use multisession mode.
