Preferred Solution: Seagate external hard disk not getting initialized

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Seagate external hard disk not getting initialized

I have an WD 1TB hard disk which failed to initialize recently. It gives me an I/O error message. I found a few old threads here with similar problem and tried out the suggested steps. I ran WD diagnostic tool and passed the Quick test and Extended test(Screenshot attached). I would like to avoid the zero test and formatting of my data if possible. The hard disk is almost full and recovering them after formatting would be really painful. I would be really grateful if someone could please help me out?

Answer:1TB WD external hard disk not initialized

Is you have a empty hard drive kicking about or somewhere to store you data, move it all to there.
Then format you drive, see if that works.

Hello,

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Please help, thank you.

I am using windows 8 and I have read previous threads with similar issues that I face but my problem is unique. My 60GB external Hard disk was manufactured by FUJITSU and was taken out of a dell laptop. When I bought a case for it yesterday it was tested in a laptop computer to see if it was working before I paid for the case and it was working properly. However, the owner of the laptop removed the cable without safely ejecting the drive first. Later, I connected it to several computer and it would install and be detected in Device manager, Disk Management and even devices and printers but it does not show in My Computer nor does autoplay options pop up. In disk management it is shown as Disk 1 unknown not initialized as shown in the attached screenshot.

I notice that whenever i open disk management, it prompts me to initialize the disk but when i chose gpt and click ok, this window pops up

when I right click the Disk 1 the initialize option is gray and only offline, properties, and help are available. I used mini partition tool and this is what i get

I am at my wits end. Please assist. I do not need what is inside the hdd. I just want it to work.

Sorry to say your WD Elements is dead and you have tried everything. There is nothing left for me to do, honestly. I would have done the same thing before declaring it dead.. No DIY data recovery is possible. The only option open to you is to entrust it to Western Digital Data Recovery partners in your region. Check with them whether there is any hope of recovering data in good shape.Telephonic consultation is free.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

There are few threads in this forum which are similar to mine, except that their Drives are visible in the Disk Management as Unallocated Space, mine is not.

I've tried all tools, tried in Windows XP still no solution.

Is there any way to atleast recover the data !!!!!!!!!

-Click Initialized it said i/o device error

I have try uninstall the device and restart let it install again still the same.
Checking many thread have the same problem, I wonder anyone solve this kind of problem before?
--------------
Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

I have a Seagate original HDD of 320GB where I had some really important documents and pictures (of course, everyone's data is important, needless to be mentioned). A couple of months ago, it suddenly stopped being recognized on all computers. I took it to the service guy near my house, who said there is a clicking sound but that it is not being detected. I was referred to a data recovery agency who said it was 'physical damage' and some 70% can be recovered, and that I gotta pay to the tune of $800. I live in India, and no one charges so much for these services. I smelled a rat, and also sensed I would be bankrupt for months. So took my Seagate external HDD back. The HDD was opened by them and then given to me. Like a fool I told them it was ok to be opened and checked. I have no idea what they did with it. I decided not to approach any 'data recovery agencies' that are advertised cos I have become really suspicious of them. Now I really want my data back. My problems are these:

If there is a physical damage (as claimed by those agents) what are the chances of getting the data back?
What can I possibly do myself at home in order to get the data? I am willing to spend money to the tune of $100, if need be for a good software.
Assuming there really was a physical damage and the robbers weren't lying about the actual problem, it still means the data could be recovered, cos they swore they would give me 70% of it. That means, there must be dat... Read more

If the drive is making a clicking sound it is a likely sign the read/write needle is either stuck or not moving properly (similar to a defective tone arm on an old-style record player).

If a professional data recovery service goes to work on it, it is possible they can salvage data from the sectors that haven't been damaged or gouged by the read-write needle failing (again, think of an old vinyl LP that skips - these are the areas where data recovery is unlikely).

The big question is which 70% of the data can be salvaged. Since there is no way of telling if the 20GB file you need most is in a recoverable part of the drive, it's unfortunately a crap shoot.

Hi
I have a seagate External HDD (250GB - ST325060)
which was working fine for the past 2 years with no issues on WinXP.
Last week when i was working with that, the power connection cable attached to the HDD was removed accidently.
From then,i am trying to switch it on,but its not wswitching on, its not spinning. i changed the power outlets, checked the cables, but nothing is working out. i have lot of data in that HDD(around 200GB). Can you guys please help to make the HDD work again or to recover the data.

Thanks
VK

Answer:Seagate External Hard Disk not switching on, not spinning

You'll need to open it up. There may be a small fuse that you can replace (though there may be some soldering involved).

You can also remove the drive from the case and attach it internally in your PC to recover data (with an adapter if it is a small drive).

In any case, unless there is a fuse cap externally that you can check, you'll need to remove the case.

I just bought an external hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, 1.5TB) and have some difficulty setting it up using the Seagate DiscWizard software.

The reason I bought this drive is to clone my DELL Inspiron 6400 Laptop HD in case of disaster etc. The Laptop HD is 140GB and 70GB are taken for my files / programs. So I was able to clone the Laptop HD but when I reboot, after I changed the BIOS settings to boot from the USB, the Laptop starts and during the process of loading Vista it re boots by itself.

Looking on the explorer, I have the Main C:\ drive, and then I have the Recovery D:\ (that is where DELL put the recovery files), then I have E:\ which is the DVD drive and then are the new cloned drives F:\ Recovery and G:\ Main.

Now checking the properties of F:\ and G:\ they are both formatted as NTFS and the F:\ is 10 GB as my original and the G:\ is only 70GB as the original so the clone process made the external drive only 70GB.

I think the problem is that the G:\ should have been before the F:\ but not sure.

Any Ideas on how to go about it?

I bought an external hard disk (FreeAgent 160GB, Model # ST901603FGE1E1-RK) in February 2008. The purpose is data backups of my PCs (all XP-SP2). Whenever I use this external hard disk (from any of my PCs), there are always a few occurences of the following in Event viewer :-

Type: Warning
Source: Disk
EventID: 51
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation

My other external hard disk is a Western Digital (procured about a year ago), and so far, I have not come across any such error message when I use it.

Should I be concerned about this error event in my Seagate FreeAgent? Since this is a data backup device, I am worried.

You can run a drive diagnostic test on it:

Also consider running CheckDisk on it too

I have a brand new Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 1 TB external HDD. Actually it's my dad's and I was suspicious that it might have a virus. So I booted my laptop through Ubuntu and plugged my Seagate once it booted successfully. There was no virus, just some default files that can be found on a new HDD, like UserManuals, an exe file also which I guess might have been the driver. There were some other files as well but I can't remember the names. Relieved that there is no virus, I formatted the Seagate HDD because I knew (or believed) that those files aren't really necessary to run the HD. A message appeared which said the disk couldn't be formatted properly but still was opening with no data in it. Yesterday I wanted some data from my friend and plugged in the HD in her computer. The HD did open and drive window appeared with no data in it. Everything fine. Suddenly the window disappeared and drive was not there even in My Computer. I unplugged and replugged the HD many times but the HD could not be detected. Now I can't use this Seagate HD, as it's not even being detected.

What went wrong? Did something happen due to the deletion of those default files? Or something else went wrong?

Please help!

Note : my Pen drive and other USB things works fine in all the ports in both front panel and back panel.
Please help me.each and Every time when i want to connect my hard disk, I have to take my CPU out from its shelf and connect it in the back usb port. Its tideous for me.

Answer:Seagate external hard disk not detected in front panel USB port

Well not exactly knowing what type of a computer we are talking about here, I can only say, that what your are reporting is completely normal. Most computers I've ever touched have passive styled USB ports on the front of the computer, and aggressive USB ports off the back that can handle just about anything you can hook up to it.

So stop trying to connect that external hard drive off the front, not enough power and not enough data exchange rates. I would recommend that if you have all your USB ports off the back of the computer taken, I would start thinking seriously about an "amplified" 4 port USB HUB. Remember the HUB your looking for has it's own power source, and does not relying on the computer at all for it's power.

The following one is a good one, a friend of mine got her's about a month ago and has not yet reported any problems.

Hi,

I've been recovering data from three older internal hard drives for a friend, by way of an external HDD enclosure connected via USB to my laptop. It went well for the first two HDDs but the third, well ....

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 HDD, 120 GB and is also marked SATA150.

(1) On most occasions, the HDD in question does not appear under My Computer. Under Devices and Printers, I see the external HDD enclosure as "USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge" (but not the HDD). In Disk Management, I see my internal drives and CD/DVD ROM but for the HDD in question, only "Disk 2, Unknown, Not Initialised" - I get the option to initialise it as MBR or GPT (I cancel at that point).

(2) On rare and seemingly random occasions, my laptop does pick up the HDD as drive F: but usually asks me if I want to format it (nope!). At this point it also appears under Devices and Printers, My Computer and in Disk Management as 'RAW' and 'healthy'.

(3) On three occasions, I have seen the drive name; on two occasions, all of the files - and on one occasion, I was able to copy four files across to my laptop (before losing visibility of it). So I know all the files are there.

However the HDD disconnects itself (or is disconnected) quite quickly, such that I am back to position (1) for the vast majority of the time.

I have tried TestDisk and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which do not see the HDD. I have also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard, which mostly does not see the HDD but on one occa... Read more

Hi empog,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It could be an either an issue with the harddrive itself or it is formatted in a partition which is not recognized by windows.

Once the harddrive is connected open command prompt and type diskpart and hit enter. Then type list disk and hit enter.

Whatever information is displayed kindly post a screenshot for the same.

Hi, i'm new on this forum. I was searching for an answer to this issue in a lot of threads but i didn't find something to fix it.

I built an external hd using the hard disk of my old laptop (Fujitsu MHV2120AH PL) and a Woxter i-Case 240.

When i connected it via USB i went to the Disk Manager and saw the unit as "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized". But there was something else, the disk has a size of 120GB but the Disk Manager shows only 700MB.

The Disk Manager didn't allowed me to format this partition and when I press on "Initialize disk" it didn't do anything.

I used a Linux Live CD and I had the same issue, i tried to create a new partition table but it didn't create it and GParted didn't allow me to create a new partition answering that i need a partition table first.

I tried with Diskpart without any result too.

This HD had an Windows XP installed on the old laptop and before dissamble it i made a quick format with the Bootable CD of my laptop. The quick format was interrupted when the program was copying the files necesary to install Windows XP.

Do you have any idea?

Answer:Unknown - Not Initialized Disk (External HD)

Hello Matterito!

You could try a couple of things: changing the enclosure, as this one's controller may be corrupt, or hooking up the disk directly to the computer.
Also, see if your USB drivers need updating.

Following this, it may be that your disk is just damaged. It could be just that the partition table is corrupted, so may be writing full zeros to the disk and repartitioning and reformatting it would help fix the issue. That is in the case that you don't need the information on the drive.

Yes you can but none of those products offer a decent defragging method and defragging is not really required that much either.

I've got 600GB HD (Rock mobile disk) that goes without saying need to be recuperated. It was working fine earlier this summer when I last accessed it. A few weeks ago, I plugged it in again and it gave me an I/O Device Error, read and unspecified error.

I have been researching a solution non stop and today when i plugged it in once again something worst happened, this time I see a External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized in Disk Management.

Can someone please help?

The irony... we get an external drive to protect our data and not loose it and then this happens

Try this to salvage what you can from it: Download MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition - MajorGeeks
Do that before any attempts to repair.
If nothing, portable drives are even less reliable than stationary ones and it's interfaces are prone to malfunction.

This drive was originally a Maxtor back-up drive that my brother in law could never get to accomplish a successful back-up routine when running on his XP desktop system or his new Vista laptop. He gave it to me and I installed upgraded software and tried it on my Vista x64 system and again recieved "back-up failed" error messages. I decided to delete all contents on the drive and use it as a basic external storage drive. My problem is now my system see's it as "Drive not yet initialized". Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

Answer:WD EXTERNAL HARD DISK 1TB suddenly "unallocated" and "not initialized"

Hi!

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (http://www.articlesbase.com/hardware...s-6907958.html), or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

Hi, thanks for trying to help me with this.

I recently moved and had my external hard drive disconnected and in storage for several months. It is a Western Digital model# WD500H1U-00. It has a separate power supply. There is a blue light on the front that is illuminated all the time, except when I connect the HD, then it will flash. When I got unpacked I hooked it up to my desk top and the computer would not access it. I then tried to install it on my laptop with no success. Since then I purchased a USB cord, with no luck.

This hard drive has a LOT of irreplaceable information on it. Formatting it is not an option.

Kevin at SpywareHammer.com was helping me with some other stuff and suggested I:

Regarding the ext HD, try this please:

1) Control panel===>administrative tools===>computer management===>Disk management

3) Right mouse click into the disk field, select Change drive letter and paths ===> choose a letter from the drop down, select OK. the HD should now be available.

No luck here either. When I right click on the disk field nothing happens. When I right click on the title block(?) I get: Initialize Disk (faded), Offline, Properties and, Help.

Hi,

My problem is as follows:
External Hard Drive (1Tb WD Elements) that I've been using for a few months now has data on that I would very much like to keep.
It was working fine until yesterday in which I tried opening a VS project which became unresponsive, tried closing everything down and turning off computer which just froze the computer leading to a hard reset (button held for 5 seconds)

Since then the External Hard Drive has not been shown in Windows Explorer and in Disk Management is shown as "Unkown" and "Not Initialized"

The Drive will still be seen correctly in Device Manager and if uninstalled it will say it has correctly installed and is ready to use.

Attempts to recover data or Initialize the drive have not worked and I have followed and looked up multiple ways to recover and other similar cases. I'm fairly certain for the data recovery the drive needs to be initialized (which just throws me an I/O error upon attempting the process) as looking at the Volume section in the properties of the device the size of the drive is listed as 0Mb.

My Last resort is taking it to a data recovery shop and hope they can grab the stuff on there.

Any help is muchly appreciated thanks.

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Initialized

I'm not up on WD Elements. Did that HD come with a form of Smartware, and in that Smartware, was there a utility that would come up and either ask you to type in the user-assigned password or it would automatically type in the saved password and pass same onto The System -- and unlock the WD Elements? I ask because I'm a little familiar with WD Passport, not WD Elements.

Hi all,

I'm having an issue where my external hard drive (WD Passport Ultra 2TB) is not displaying in my computer and is not initialized in Disk Management. This occurred after my computer crashed while I was pulling out data from the external hard drive. Now when I plug in the external hard drive, it has a clicking sound for a few seconds then stops with a blinking light.

I have tried using the MiniTool Partition Wizard and it does not detect it. When I open up Disk Management, it says that I need to initialize the disk before I can access it. I read somewhere that I will lose my files if I initialize this, so I have not done so. The Disk Management also does not show any unallocated space in it. Please see attached image.

Currently I just want to take out all the data from this hard drive before I let this drive go if I can't save it. Is there any hope for me to save my files?

Best regards,
Jeefster

Hello,
first of all I would just like to point out that I am not a native speaker so I apologize in advance for the mistakes I might make.
I have a problem with my external hard drive. The drive is Verbatim 47512. Last year I unplugged the drive without safely removing it first. When I plugged it in again it asked me to format the drive. As I didn't wanna loose my files I tried using Recuva and it worked. However, the process took too long and I was leaving for ten months the next day so I had to stop the process. I wanted to continue when I got back but the drive wasn't working at all. I couldn't even turn it on. I kept trying and after some time it started to work again. When I plug it in, I can't find it in my computer. But I can find it in the disk management. I'm attaching a picture, it says it's uninitialized and that it needs to be initialized. I don't know what it means and I'm scared it might delete my files. It also says that it's allocated and unknown. https://postimg.org/image/zci27fe6h/
I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and it says that my disk is bad. I don't know how to proceed, can you please help me? Or should I give up?

i have a Toshiba hard drive 500 GB it was working fine but suddenly when i plugged into my laptop i discovered it is not working and when i go to disk management it said Disk 2 unknown and not initialized.
i tried to plug it in another computers but nothing changed.
i have many thing in that drive i need them so could you please help me ?

Answer:my external hard drive is unknown and not initialized

I assume you have tried another usb cable; that is the very first thing to do.
If you have already done the above, then the next thing I would do would be to pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it as an internal drive. Note you must have a working desktop to accomplish this task. If that does not work, you can send the drive to a data recovery shop. This last step is NOT cheap so get an estimate. A simple recovery using software can run $250 or so plus the cost of whatever media you want the data copied to AND it goes way up from there.
i have many thing in that drive i need them so could you please help me ?Click to expand...

Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. All drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail.

I have a external hard drive that's not initialized, but it recognizes with a messages pops up saying my drive is ready for use, but it doesn't show up under My Computer. I have a Windows 7 desktop PC that is a Home Premium 32-bit Anytime Upgrade. I'm thinking it's not fried, and I'm thinking that way because I received the message it found new hardware and ready to use? Or is it dead?

Also, I don't have a spare enclosure, and tools to open it up, so taking it out of the enclosure would be out of the question.

Thank you for any help!

Hi Jumanji,

My external HDD (WD) is not getting recognized in my laptop from last few weeks. I have followed different threads but didn't get any working solution.

I have tried below options:

1. Disk management : Initially showing MBR/GPT options but none worked. After that its showing my external HDD as 'Disk1 unknwon not initialized'.

2. MiniTools Partition Wizard : Installed MiniTools Partition Wizard v9 in my laptop however my external HDD is not showing in the tool as Disk2.

Could you please help me to get the issue resolved or recover the data at least.

Many thanks !!

I had a WD 2TB external drive which I transferred successfully to a USB 3.0 enclosure months ago. Then I moved and the drive has been packed away in the trunk of my car since.

I just got it out as I need some files on it, and when I hooked it up it didn't work: the computer recognized it as a CD drive or something... in Computer it would not show up or show up as just a drive letter ... in disk management it said No Media. I tried it on another PC too to no avail.

After much research, the most likely solution looked to be to get a new enclosure. So I did, but the drive still isn't working, but in a different way.

When I first hooked it up, all looked well: the system tray showed correct recognition of the drive and enclosure type/brand and installed the drivers successfully.

But the drive no longer shows up in Computer at all, and in disk management it now prompts me to initialize the disk, and has it marked as Unknown, Not Initialized.

I have spent all day trying to fix this problem, and have read a million threads on different sites and tried everything, to no consequence. I need the files on the drive, and have tried all of the following:

- booting in ubuntu and knoppix via cd - drive is not recognized

- every major app for this type of problem i saw recommended: seagate seatools, partition wizard, wd data lifeguard diagnostics, power data recovery, find and mount, a bunch of stuff on hiren's boot cd, test disk, etc.

Answer:External Hard Drive HELL (Unknown, Not Initialized)

Do NOT initialize it. With a usb stick or dvd Puppy Linux boot firmly in place ready to boot, can you reconnect the WD 2TB drive back to the computer like it was in the old days? Boot Puppy Linux, copy all the data folders and files onto another reliable external media. If that does not work, you might be heading for a local business-oriented computer fix-it place. However, let's see what others here might want to add.

Hey,

Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.

Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:

After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.

I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).

I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.

Hi there Sedhadi,

If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.

Have a 1TB Iomega USB3 external hard drive that worked well on both a desktop and laptop Win7/64 system. Now it shows up as unidentified and not initialized using computer/manage/storage/disk management. Disk Management also gives the optiin to initialize it but I declined because I would like to recover the data. The power light comes on and it spins up with both a USB3 or USB2 connections and is identified as an Iomega eGo drive when I use the USB eject function.
Hard Drive Sentinel does not recognize it at all. Any suggestions appreciated.

Answer:Previously functional USB3 external hard drive shows not initialized

1. Please post a screenshot of Disk Management with your external HDD plugged in. Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

2. It would indeed be prudent to recover the data before you try anything else on the HDD.

You may try to access the hard drive booting into a live Linux CD/pendrive.

Download Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build) v5.2.8 ISO from http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm

It is light and only 132.6 MB.

Make a Bootable pendrive with Rufus v1.3.2 (442 KB) http://rufus.akeo.ie/

It takes less than 2 minutes to create your bootable live Linux pendrive.

For more guidance on the recovery process directly get into the heading Recovering files from the non-bootable Internal Drive - applicable to recovery from any hard drive - in Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer

You may also use this tutorial by Golden http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/256518-peppermint3-create-live-cd-dvd-usb-use-emergency-backup.html to create your bootable pendrive with Peppermint3 Linux.

Lucid Puppy or Peppermint3, in either case you can use Rufus to create your bootable pendrive.

Dear Support,

I tried most of the forums, but didnt find a solution for this one. I have a Seagate external hard disk just 3 months old!!!

I have a hp laptop and was connecting to it using 3.0 USB port. I was getting the error

"PLEASE FORMAT THE DISK BEFORE YOU CAN USE IT" error.

I had quite lot of data in it, BUT, i did not mind about the data here, AS the hardware is more important for me, as its just 3 months old. So i just tried to format the disk. I also tried CHKDKS f:/R/X option and it completed successfully with out error which took almost 2 days completely. BUT formatting has become a problem as explained below.

Everytime i try to format the drive, say it starts formatting and it reaches some 16-20 % the drive disconnects itself as i hear a disconnection sound, and after that it connects itself again, as i hear sort of power on sound. Immediately i get an error from the format telling me that the drive is disconnected and the format cannot continue.

Also i again get back the PLEASE FORMAT THE DISK BEFORE YOU CAN USE IT"

PLEASE GUYS I WOULD REALLY BE GRATEFUL IF ANYONE OF YOU CAN assist me in guiding me, as to what would be the problem.

I have already tried uninstalling the USB HOST drivers from the HP website(as i have a hp system installed.)
The drive is not even detected currently in USB 2.0. Not sure what is the reason. I just want to save my hard disk, as i paid a lot for it and its just 3 months onl

Just bought Seagate 3TB backup+ external disk.
I can't copy/paste files even after "taking ownership"
Everyone and Administrators have Full Control Permission in Security properties.
Do I have to use Seagate program only?
Can't I simply copy files like I used to do with previous 1TB & 2TB Segate external disks (in win7) or WD drives?
I am administrator and sole user.
OS: Windows 7 ultimate x64
Please help
Thank you

Answer:Can Seagate 3TB Backup+ external disk work with win7 x64

I've never used the seagate program so yes you should be able to copy and paste. One thing I've noticed is it is the slowest drive I have EVER used. I ended up delegating it to File History on a Win 8 machine because it was useless for drive images and transfers.

A lifetime of data on it.

Found other posters here with the problem which led me to post. It was working fine and due to whatever it now doesn't show up in explorer.

It's a USB3. I tried on multiple computers and USB 1 and 2, running Win 8 and Win 7.

Shows up in device manager and shows up as usb. I can't get it to view in partition wizard or any other recovery program like testdisk that tries to view it.

I currently have it out of the case and attached internally. I had to add it with computer running since I can't access any jumper settings and computer won't boot with it installed.

BUT it shows up in disk management. Images attached.

Can I initialize but not format, will that help it show up in Partwizard so I can get at the data somehow to save?

For the love of God HELP please...

Kevin

I have recently had a new desktop PC. Prior to that I had a laptop where Seagate external drive was permanently connected via a USB port. I was running Win7, using FF browser and WLM.
With the new pc if I leave Seagate connected I can't boot up - the screen stops at BIOS. Everything seems to be running properly as long as I don't keep the external hard drive connected until boot up is complete.
What can I do so that I don't have to keep disconnecting Seagate each time I shut down?

Hope someone can help and that the solution is an easy one. Thanks.

It sounds like the external harddrive has died - do you have copies of the files on your computer as well?

Assuming the drive is dead and it is not an issue with the USB connection, it is possible to get the files off of the harddrive though companies that provide such services often charge a high price.

OK, so about 3 weeks ago, I bought a 250gb Seagate External HDD. I plugged it in and it worked... last night, all of a sudden, it stopped working. I've tried plugging it into another PC, and nothing... it doesn't even find it. I've tried going to "Manage" and "Removable Storage" and it comes back saying "The service cannot be starter, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. This snapin's display may be inconsistent with the Removable Storage Service. If the problem persists please restart the snapin."

I'm assuming it's the external, because, like I said, I tried hooking it up to another PC and that PC can't find it either. HELP, I have EVERYTHING on this external, and I don't want to lose it. Could it be the USB cable? It's only 3 weeks old! (BTW, I have Windows XP)

I've got a Seagate 1TB external hard drive that I used to back up all my files a while ago. Since then, I have had to junk the old PC and now use a laptop. I decided it was time to check the old back-up files, but the external drive doesn't appear to be working. I don't have the original power lead so I'm using a multi-purpose adaptable adapter. No lights, no sounds of movement from within. To my knowledge the drive has not been driopped or suffered any similar fate. Any ideas of anything I can try, or should I take it to a local store for checking out?

Answer:Seagate external hard drive not working

I would obtain an OEM adapter, from Seagate.

As it so happens, I do have two enclosures I stripped the hard drives out of, as I got them dirt cheap ($20), and the 7200.12 HDD in question was a $60 drive at the time.

Otherwise, you could crack the enclosure (not high on list, at all), and worse come to worst, use an Apricorn drivewire tool to hook it up via USB, so as to extract the data.

PM me if you are interested in the enclosure/adapter. Just cover shipping.

Yesterday morning I used my External Hard Drive (trough lockngo.exe)

After finishing, I locked the external hard drive.

12-13 hours later when I arrived home, I finished doing some school

Funny thing is, I then went to "Computer Management" and under "Disk

I then right clicked it, went to Properties and it said "This device

I installed the extra SeaGate manage software, did a few error checks

After that, I went to "Disk Management" and it showed:

What concerns me is the "RAW" part... what does it mean? Anything bad

Were you able to open other files with the same extension at the time you first got that error message---or did you get the error ONLY for that one file?

Were you ever able to open this particular file or files with a similar extension on this external drive?

I'd be surprised if a re-format is necessary, but I guess you've already done that.

Hi Folks,I have just purchased a Seagate FreeAgent External Hard drive, 500GB USB2. Setting up was nothing, just had to connect the two Leads. From my previous Seagate External Hard Drive which is not working any more I have BounceBack Launcher Software but it will not recognise the new Seargate. It goes throught the process of Sizing 'C'&'G' drives ok but then a window says 'Connect & Start up drive to backup to.'I've unplugged the USB2 lead & plugged it back again several times. On each ocassion it tells me that it has recognised the backup Drive & was Initialising Drivers. After a few moments the same Window appeared, 'Connect & Start up drive to backup to.' The Seagate is there in My Computer.I have done A New Driver install from Windows but it says no New Drivers, what it has is the latest. Something to that effect. Please can anyone HELP!!!!! I have an external desktop hard drive [Seagate 2T]. I had an issue where my laptop would not recognize it. It was supposed to be 3.0 USB, but after some research found some people with similar problems and the solution was to use the 2.0 USB.
It did disappear again for a couple of days and then magically re-appeared. I have since purchased a new WD 2T drive in order to transfer the files and return the Seagate as it's approximately 2 months old. However it has not come up anywhere [the Seagate] in over a week. Today I unplugged everything and plugged the Seagate into the USB 3.0 and left for a few hours. When I returned it is now listed in disk management as 'disk 1 - unknown - 1863.02 GB - Not initialized' and in the partitions [in black] simply says '1863.02 GB - unallocated' and no partitions.
Right clicking gives me 4 options:
1 Initialize Disk 2 Offline 3 Properties and 4 Help
Option 3 opens the properties and says 'this device is working properly' but all values are at 0
Option 4 leads to me to microsoft help topics which basically have all Windows 7 information.... I have Windows 8.1
I am reluctant to choose option 1 as I do not want to erase or reformat all the information on the drive.
I am not overly technical, but have read alot in different forums but still consider myself as a novice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have successfully used Seagate Tool to scan my internal HD but it is not recognising my External Drive when I try to scan that. It appears as Sea Tools in Control Panel/Programmes and Features but not on Computer/Manage/Services and Applications/Services where I looked on suggestion from web. It appears I need some kind of MZXM (?) update but do not understand the process of getting this for Windows 7 and am concerned not to mess up my backup drive .

My concern began because Windows 7 keeps asking me to format the Backup Drive before doing my weekly backup. When I ignored it the backup appeared to go ahead any way but I don`t like ignoring mysterious
instructions unless I understand why they are there.

Can anyone please advise me ?

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. The system cannot find the file specified.

Hi all
I have a 500GB external Seagate HD. When connected to my pc yesterday however it was not recognised anywhere, not showing in dvices and drives, in disk management or even in the bios. It was fine the last time I connected it and it actually starts up although makes a clicking sound for about twenty seconds.
I took it out of the housing and connected it directly but still no sign. Have tried different USB ports and I have used various online tools including Seagates own tool but nothing sees it.
Any ideas at all as I have never had a drive not recognised anywhere before?

Answer:Seagate external hard drive not recognised anywhere on the PC?

Do you have another PC you can connect it to? The clicking noise sounds rather worrying, and I'd suspect the drive has developed a fault.

Most of the time when I plug in my seagate external 1tb hard drive, my computer won't find it. The external hard drive turns on and then turns itself off within a few seconds. I assume the hard drive is automatically turning itself off as if it is in sleep mode.

How can I prevent it from going in sleep mode? Will reformatting the hard drive help?

I have access to the hard drive as this problem does not occur everytime but just most of the time.

Hi sonoma4me,Welcome to the forum! You would need to format the HDD in order to use it. To format the drive in Win XP, right-click on My Computer and go to ?Manage?. In the window that comes up, click Disk Management in the left pane. Once it loads, you should see an ?Initialize Disk? wizard pop up. Partition and format the disk to your liking.Hope it helps.

Hello there. I'm running xp pro and have a 2tb seagate external hd that has worked without a fault for a couple of years until i was transfering a file to another seagate ext hd when it froze in the middle of the transfer.
Now when i plug it into any usb port, the 'autoplay' pops up and continues to search and not find any files except the first folder and cannot find any files. Even when i click cancel it will say 'cancelling' but will not stop till i unplug it.
As soon as i unplug it the action box pops up with some weird icons beside the usual headings.
Also I can plug the HD into my tv and access the files, fine.
If someone can please help me i would be forever greatful as my lifes music library is hiding in there and i shrivell up and die without my beats? Please help, please:confused

Answer:External Seagate Hard Drive not responding

HI

Its possible that the USB drive lette or recognition is amiss with Windows, this can happen when the portable device is plugged into other devices. So best 1st test is to delete the USB driver reference for this device on your PC and recreate.

To do this, open device manager and then the Universal Serial Bus Controller branch and then note the list, then plug in your device and not the change, it may say Mass Storage Device and right click and uninstall this device, then unplug and replug in your Ex HDD and the drive should reload the driver again and be accessable

I have a 250 Gb Seagate external harddrive.

I've transferred all my comedy cassettes to Mp3 and put them all onto the drive.

When I turned the drive on today it gave out all sorts of clicking noises and the drive light goes on and off.It sounds very unhealthy.

Most of the time the drive doesn't show at all in 'my computer' but occasionally the noises stop and the drive settles down and it appears with a different drive letter to what it was before. When I click on the drive a get a message 'drive I is not formatted - do you want to format ?Y/N?'

Now I accept the drive is broken and fairly cheap these days to replace but have I lost all my valuable recordings? I know everyone says you should always back stuff up but it's always something you're going to do tomorrow !!!

Is there any way I can retreive my stuff to put onto a new drive (and back up) ??

Thanks

Answer:External Hard drives Maxtor or Seagate

Yes the latest drives all need ( iirc as I only looked at a handfull last week while looking into getting one myself ) USB2.0, so you would have to also buy a USB2.0 PCI addon card to run the EHD from.

on the subject of what drives, I have used, either in work or for friends, both Maxtor and Seagate drives and found them to be ok, as for one with a fan, it is an advantage to have a fan if the ones your looking at come with them especially if the room where it will be used alot is warm, but if its well ventilated then they get hot but no hotter than internals can get.

Options I ended up toying with are;

From Seagate

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usb ( USB2.0 only and slightly under your requested 300gb, max in this range is 250gb at present )

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usbfirewire ( funny enough datasheet says USB1.1 compatible, but data transfer will be much slower than USB2.0 ) reason I like this option was its stackable.

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/portable/index.html ( smaller size than what you listed but, we use these in work and they do perform well for drives that will fit in the palm of your hand )

From Maxtor

http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/OTIII_USB/ ( I do like the One Touch Series )

USB2.0 PCI card http://www.verbatim.com.au/products.cfm?productID=KW2580E2 no doubt you can find some at a local retaliers in either 2 or 4 port versions.

I have a 2 TB Seagate external hard drive which has worked fine.

It is used on a 64 bit Vista (Ultimate with SP2) Dell machine.

I have had to restore an image backup of C: drive and the drive no longer appears in the Computer folder nor in Disc Management now.

However the drive is lit up and when I insert the USB cable there is the connected sound and when I disconnect it there is the disconnect sound so something is seeing it.

I have tried this on both the 64 bit Vista and on an XP - on neither of the computers is the drive seen.

I would rather hope that I can eventually access this drive as it has 1.7 TB of audio files on it.

Is there a solution for this?

Answer:External Seagate hard drive not seen by computer

As this external drive won't show up on any other PC the circuitry in the box has probably developed a fault.

For about £10 you can by a USB Hard Drive Adapter, see Ebay. Remove the hard drive from the enclosure and connect it to the USB adapter and it should then function as long as the fault is not on the drive itself.

Upon insertion of the external drive it does not show up in 'My Computer.' It is recognised in device manager and devices & printers, and even in disk management, however any attempt to access the drive is fruitless. I am completely unable to format or change drive letter & paths, however disk management suggests that the partition is completely healthy yet I am unable to access the drive. Uninstalling & reinstalling drivers has no effect & current drivers are up to date.

I have used this hard drive without issues since the day I bought it (Nov. 26 2009). All the sudden 2 days ago I unplugged it from my laptop and when I returned home and plugged it back in my computer flashed a screen saying the drive was not formatted. I contacted Seagate and followed their steps. However, I am still getting nothing. The drive is showing up under my computer, but only as a local disk, not as an expansion drive as it did before the drive also shows up under my device manager, but, once again if I try to do anything my computer will lock up. Whenever I try to access it, my computer will lock up. When shutting down my computer it will continue to stay on the windows is shutting down screen until I unplug the drive from the USB. It is not emitting any funny noises. I am not sure what to do; there is too much information on the drive for my computer to hold if I tried to do a data recovery. It is just strange that it would work fine and then a few hours later give me all kinds of issues. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it!
I am operating with a Dell 1737 studio, 4gb, with windows 7 ultimate.

I note that your entire original post has been written poorly this way; and as we are not presently SMSing on a mobile phone! It would be far better (for you) to write clearly, if you need clear support.
ie I could just as easily write back: "Get S.Tools 'n chk; o ty Im dve 2 comp bck, u no."
Well, no doubt any support member can eventually work out what I mean (possibly even you) but I look at posts like these, and I think, why bother! You don't have the time to write correctly, and I don't have the time to reply (except to help you to post correctly, it would seem)

By the way, bumping your thread only after 5hrs is not correct to the board's guidelines. Try to be more patient. Or better yet re-write (via using Edit) your post.

I'm using Hp Compaq DC7800 desktop core 2 duo with 2GB of ram.Now I'm planning to upgrade from 320GB to 1tb hard disk (Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5).- Would it run smoothly on system?- Is this a good choice or 512 GB?- This one or another model of hard disk of some other company?

Answer:Would the Seagate 1 TB hard disk run smoothly on my pc?

Hi: A 1 TB drive will work fine because I put one in my HP dc7800. There is one problem though...This document explains it. http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=3718645&docId=emr_na-c02711513-3 Now, the fact that you are getting a Seagate drive, that may be OK, but I can't guarantee it. I originally planned to install a Western Digital SATA III drive in my dc7800, but it displayed the symptoms in the above document (not detected on start up most of the time). Naturally, I assumed the drive was defective, so I returned it, and the replacement drive did the same thing. Then I came across the above document. I have a HP 8200 Elite (which is a descendant of the dc7800) and it came with a Seagate 1 TB HDD, SATA III (6.0 GBPS). So, I put the Seagate drive in my dc7800 several years ago, and it has worked fine ever since.  I put the 500 GB WD HDD in the 8200 Elite and it works just fine in that model, because it has a sata III controller. So, that may be the only issue you come across.  It is a major issue of course, if the drive doesn't work.

I purchased a 1.5tb Seagate external hard drive Christmas last year since then it has clicked loudly when writing or reading large files (it makes no noise when idle). The problem has been widely documented online as seen in videos such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgJe9R0QpmI. Although I have yet to see a solution that would fix the problem.

There is one video that I have found seeming to offer a fix but it requires quite serious dismantling of the drive. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK1pEVjReNA)

Does ANYBODY know a fix from the clicking? I don't mind using the fix seen above if anyone can explain how inserting a piece of paper into the bottom of the drive will stop the clicking.

PS: Seagate refuse to acknowledge there is a problem with their drives and instead offers a replacement drive and from the research I have seen it is a pointless transition as they all have the same problem.

Answer:Seagate 1.5TB External hard drive constantly clicking

People have apparently fixed it by using better USB cables, a powered USB hub, updating the drive's firmware, or the method above.

My guess is that the enclosure has poorly soldered connections or there's a short occurring. Poor soldering on the connector/board could explain why changing the USB cable, powered USB hub, or changing the positioning of the connectors/board seems to work for some people.

Normally this clicking would be attributed to a failing drive, but this appears to be a case of poor design/quality with the enclosure.

You could also just shove the drive into another USB enclosure and trash the Seagate garbage.

In the past two years, I had connected many interesting and touching videos on my Seagate external hard drive so that I could view and taste them at any time when I want. But, yesterday, when seeing them on my laptop with my girl friend, this drive was mistakenly formatted and all videos were gone. Fortunately, I had copied many back from the online storage. But, the online backup had not been updated over three months. There were still about 10 videos that could not be rescued. Do you have any idea for me to get them back? Thank you for any suggestion!

You can try some basic data recovery applications like Testdisk/Photorec or Recuva.

Hi

I have recently bought a Seagate External Hardrive, 1 TB, USB 3 - for the purpose of creating system images.

The Seagate driver loaded normally when connecting to the laptop for the first time and I have been successfully saving pictures/music/docs etc to it and transferring successfully back to the laptop, so that part is working.

I had created a system image on the Seagate and can see this listed however, a few weeks back I encountered a problem and decided to run the image. I went into the Recovery environment but the computer would not recognise the Seagate external hard drive.

I didn't actually run the image in the end as I resolved the problem but I need to know how to overcome this should I need to run an image in the future.

I saw on another forum that I need to load the USB 3 Host Controller andHub drivers at the beginning of the restore process (screenshot below) and the computer should then pick up the image. Is this correct? Is it normal to do this for any external hard drive? I've always used DVDs for system images and the computer recognises those straight away.

Answer:Seagate External Hard Drive - recognition query

I don't think you need to run in Recovery environment.

Using normal Windows to restore from your backup.
It will ask you to select which Backup.file to restore from.
Windows will handle to restore, and may need to reboot, when the restore is completed.

As it is not about recovery, it mean to restore your backup (files, if any) to the state when you do the Backup.

For me, i usually do clone my hard disk as just swap the HDD.

I recently purchased a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 hard drive and a Sabrent USB 3.0 SATA Hard Drive flat docking station to connect via usb to my Dell XPS L702x laptop. Upon putting the hard drive in the external enclosure and connecting to my laptop via usb my computer is not recognizing this external hard drive in disk management. I can see it in device manager and it is listed as "Jmicron SCSI Disk Device". I can also see it in devices and printer listed as "Jmicron". However it is not recognized or listed in disk management and file explorer. I am a novice when it comes to hardware issues as I am more of a software guy but I have tried everything I can find on the net to no avail. ie uninstalling and installing the drivers, using seagate utilities (I cannot also see it in Seagates applications), disabling fast startup, windows devices and printers troubleshooting, etc. I suspect (maybe incorrectly) that this device is showing up as "Jmicron SCSI disk device" instead of a SATA drive but that is coming from someone who again does not know alot about the device/hardware side. I would like to make this external drive a full backup for my windows 10 laptop and any assistance that could be provided would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for any help you may be!

I have a Seagate goflex with usb 3.0 that is read only that I am having trouble with and hoping someone has a solution.  I am logged into my computer as administrator (I have tried all these as user and get the password prompt and type it in but the results are the same).  I have several truecrypt volumes on the seagate I am trying to mount but it is mounting as readonly.  I also copied the same container to another drive and is not readonly on that drive (passport); it mounts just fine.  [Was making 2 copies just in case before making a change.]  I can also mount them from C: without a problem.   It is only from the Seagate drive that is read only.  I have checked the properties and read-only is not checked.  I checked security and full control is checked for admin and user acct.  I can delete non-admin required (e.g. .dat .xls .ico).  That same .xls I cannot change.   I also have some folders/files and I cannot delete those either, I get the warning, click continue and let it run and then the warning comes up again (nothing get deleted).  This does not give me the readonly warning.Thank you in advance for any help!

I have a Yoga 2 Pro that won't recognize my Seagate Backup Slim 2TB USB 3.0 external hard drive.  I ordered one from Amazon and it didn't recognize immediately when I plugged it in. The disk drive shows up in Devices and in Device manager with the Yellow caution triangle, but it never shows up in drives under my computer or in Disk Management (Where you change partitions, etc.) So I ordered a replacement from amazon, I thought it was broken. I had tried it in a different computer and the same thing happened so I assumed it was the drive. On a whim I tried it on the alternate machine again except this time I bypassed the USB hub and plugged it directly into USB 2.0, it worked! I installed a Paragon HFS+ software (it's for Mac Only Seagate drives to work with windows, even though this drive is NOT Mac only) and the installation failed, and my computer started messing up. It wouldn't completley power off nor restart. It just hung at the shutting down screen indefinitely.  Finally, I let the computer die, turned it back on, plugged in the hard drive and it worked. But I had already ordered the replacement. So I had to return the original and go tthe replacement and now it won't read at all.  Since I plugged it in, my computer will NEVER shut down, it will just sleep unless the battery dies, it won't restart either, it'll just hang at the restarting screen.  The drive still won't work, and the touchscreen doesn't work sometimes aft... Hi,

I realize this may not be possible at all, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I just got a 1TB Seagate "GoFlex" External Hard Drive, because I have a lot of video files and I was running out of space on my MacBook. I thought it'd be great to play these shows on my Home Theatre system straight from the external drive - it's a USB drive, and the DVD player has a USB port. My Home Theatre is Samsung, I'm not sure of much more than that but I can probably find out if I need, and the files I want to play are in iTunes format, or .m4v, if that makes a difference.

I've done some looking, and it seems like I may have to reformat the external to FAT32, but there also seems to be some concern about whether that's even possible for large drive sizes. So is this even an option, or am I stuck with hooking up my external to my computer to my HDMI and having no laptop when I want to watch anything?

Thanks. =)

When I try to copy a 5 gig (avi) file to my Seagate hard drive it says there is not enough room. There is at least 65 gigs free. I have tried defragging the drive but it still won't let me do it. I copied a 2 gig file with no problem. Any ideas?

I've been searching for ages looking for a solution to this problem but with no luck.

I have four external hard drives, all Seagate, which are no longer detected by my Vista computer. They don't show up in Computer, or in the Disk Management section. The drives aren't the problem though, because an XP computer reads the drives just fine. The drives are okay, as are the cords, so I'm pretty sure my Vista box is the problem. It takes a while but I can transfer files from XP to the Vista so I have a workaround to use.

The problem is that there is one of these Seagate drives that was formatted for Mac *and* PC, and the XP box can't read it. It can recognize that there is an external hard drive attached but just shows 0 bytes on everything in Properties, and there's no way to get files off of it.

So what I need is some help trying to get that Seagate drive to show up on my Vista PC. As mentioned, it plugs in and runs fine as far as I can tell. It's getting power and isn't making any loud noises. But if I go out to Computer or look in the Disk Management section, it doesn't show an external drive attached at all.

Any suggestions? I've run TSG SysInfo, and here are the results:

Answer:Vista Won't Recognize Seagate External Hard Drive

If it was initialised as a GPT drive rather than an MBR drive XP 32 bit can't understand GPT and that's the problem with the XP PC.

Vista should work with a GPT drive though.

Most likely not enough power for the USB port. Get a Powered hub like the Orico 4 Port.

I have bought the above drive to use on my Vista Operating System. When the Seagate is connected and the PC is powered up, 'eventually' (about 10 minutes)Windows Explorer appears. In the list of drives the Seagate is listed but inaccessable. If I power up the Seagate after booting the PC it does not recognise the drive at all. As it is a USB connection I assume that no drivers are required, and none listed on the Seagate web site.Any help would be appreciated. Dave
