PC Ports wont open to host a game (NO ROUTER) PC to PC LAN ONLY

Question: PC Ports wont open to host a game (NO ROUTER) PC to PC LAN ONLY

I recently purchased a new laptop that came with Windows 8. Now, I'm not at all certain the issue is windows 8 related.

So I've been trying to host games with friends in multi-player (minecraft, terraria, risk of rain, borderlands, etc) but they never can seem to join my game. I've tried turning off my firewall and my antivirus. (I wasn't even on the internet, so it wasn't a big risk) We're connecting by ethernet, PC to PC, and I've ensured our IP addresses are in the same subnet.

So here's the kicker: I can join any game, so long as they host it, not me. And i can ping their PCs just fine, but if they try to ping my machine they get a "Destination Host Unreachable".

Anyone have any clue as to what could be blocking my ports from opening?

PS: don't worry about burying me with jargon, I'm a network administrator in training.

Preferred Solution: PC Ports wont open to host a game (NO ROUTER) PC to PC LAN ONLY

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: PC Ports wont open to host a game (NO ROUTER) PC to PC LAN ONLY

I assume you are using a Crossover cable and not a standard Ethernet Cable?
Have you assigned a Static IP address for all the computers playing the game? and is it in the same scope as the other computers? (eg) 192.168.2.x ?
Go to each computer and go to Search and type CMD Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type
ipconfig /all and press enter. Copy the text and paste it into your next post.

My friend has a Router hooked up to his cable modem and his PS2 so he can use em both at the same time, however, with this (or atleast we have deducted that it was the router) he isnt able to host games over the internet...and since he has a better connection than i do, it would be better if he could, can anyone offer any kind of solution to this??

Answer:(Solved) Router wont let me host

You need to allow traffic through the port the game uses. The routers firewall stops you from hosting.
What game(s) do you want to host?
What is the make of router? Please try to include a model number.

I ran an online security check with Symantic, the results of which said my ports 80 and ICMP Ping were open. Should I be concerned?TIA

Answer:Ports open on router

Nothing to worry about; Port80 is an alternative for http and ICMP Pings are simply the means of checking if a user is still on the site.If you have a good Antivirus program and windows firewall activated and combine these with common sense you will be ok.

Platform: Westell UltraLine Series3
Model Number: A90-9100EM15-10

I know how to forward ports on this router, but ever since I had to restore my windows to a fresh copy, my router doesn't work right.

Also, I restored my router to default settings after I couldn't get it to forward any ports.

This is pretty much my problem, whenever I forward my port I want open, i check it and get the message "Error: I could not see your service on on port (55655)
Reason: Connection refused"

It's driving me insane. I've forwarded ports before on this router, but it's not working this time.

Answer:My router will not let me open ports.

Make sure you set a static IP on the computer you want
to forward to and use that port for forwarding.
The IP in that error looks like it may be your modem IP.

So, i've been hosting games for a while but i don't know what happened, after i try to port forward router ports they just won't open :O. Yeh, as i go to
Open Port Check Tool it says ''Error: I could not see your service on 62.**.***.*** on port (*****)
Reason: Connection timed out''

So.... How can i open my ports?? Do i have to call my router provider or something??

Answer:Router ports won't open

It really depends on your specific router model to setup port forwarding, it's hard to tell really. But a few things you could do in advance are checking that your computer as a fixed LAN IP address, and forward the port to that IP and make sure a program is actually listening to that port when you run the check online.
Another way to check it would be to connect two computers to the router, one to a LAN port and another to the WAN port, and check whether or not they can see each other.

You mean you want to map some ports in your router to specific machines on your LAN. This should be possible through the router's web-based administration interface.Do you not have docs for the router? Or can you not download them from the manufacturer's website if you don't?

Opening a port is a goofy term - - let's start with just using a port.
For a port to exist, some program creates a socket and then uses it to LISTEN for connections. You can see this with (command prompt tool) netstat -oan
Programs which are awaiting connections show up like

the nnn are the 'port numbers' created by the program.

Q? Which ports are open? A: only those that exist, eg: port 135 is open, and port 136 is closed (ie doesn't exist).
Regardless of your other setups for the router and firewall, the port is not open unless a program is LIST... Read more

I typically open a single port for torrents, and leave it alone. Upon coming back home from college however, I noticed that my family's network for opening ports is filled with randomly opened ports for ips in the network. I've closed the ports and opened ports for myself, but that is undone after some degree of time with a new set of opened ports. No one else in the family is doing it, and I've since taken security precautions. Previously, the network had no password, but I now changed the router password from default and I've added WPA-2 Personal password. However, the ports keep on opening (and overriding mine). I've asked the people in my family to run virus checks, although I'm not sure all of them have. So, back to the question:Could this be a virus or spyware? I also found this term on wikipedia: that be related to my plight?

i have a blitzz 4 port router, and i cant do file transfers on AIM and stuff like that, and i cant figure out how to manually open the ports necessary to send and get files

Answer:i need to figure out how to manually open ports with my router

Don't know which Blitzz router your using but taking the user manual "MU_BRT200_01.pdf" as a guide, opening the ports is described in the section "Virtual Server" (page 17 onwards).

There is a "Virtual Server" Menu page into which the the configuration details have to be entered.
The Application Port drop-down list on the "Virtual Server " menu may offer up AIM (in the same way as it offers FTP, telnet, etc). If not, then you should be able to add it.
The port type is, I expect, TCP for AIM (but I could be corrected on that as I am not a regular user of AIM).
You need to know the ports AIM uses. Judging by the list on AIM requires port 5190.
So you'd select "Single". But it you need a range then select "Range" (again that is AIM-specific info someone else may be able to provide if you don't already know it).
Then enter the port number. Thus "5190 to 5190" in the provided fields if a single port or the range if that is what AIM requires.
Pick the LAN IP address of the PC you want to run AIM on and enter that in "Local Server IP address". So that would be or something of that ilk depending on your LAN set-up.
If all your details are correct press ADD.
That should be it as far as I can see.

I don't know with the Blitzz routers, but with some (many?) SOHO router models it is only possible to port-forward a particul... Read more

I was hosting a server fine off my computer until one day a virus took my computer for a spin to hell. After removing it my ports all seem to be closed. I used a port scanner and it keeps saying 25565 is closed, as well as other ports, but I need 25565 the most right now.

Things my tech did:
Tested if it was my IP by using a router and forwarding the ports on it. - Failed
Changed profiles on computer and hosted - Failed
Uninstalled and shut down all firewalls - Failed
Uninstalled all hamachi and tunngle services - Failed
Disabled any known ideas that he knew that would close the ports - Failed

However we ran the server with the same connection on a laptop and it worked just fine. So it is something to do with my system. This laptop ran the same anti-virus software as well when hosted.

I've ran MS Essentials, Avast, Kerpenski or w/e it's called, Combofix, Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes and some other things that my brother ran but he uninstalled them later.

Completely stumped on this one.

Hi I've been having this problem for quite a long time and I've done everything under the sun that I can think of. Right so here's the situation.
For over a year now I've been trying to open ports on my Linksys WRT54GS and it just won't have it. I have a Static Ip, and when I remove the router from the equation I can get access through the port so I know its not my ISP blocking the ports.

I've set up port forwarding on a different router and its worked fine so that pretty much eliminates the possibility that I'm doing something wrong. The only thing I can think of is I have a faulty router, I hope its not the case but I'm at the end of my rope and I want to get this fixed.

Hi all,

So I have had a moderate NAT while gaming on Xbox Live. From what I understand, opening the ports on my router will better enable my network hardware to communicate with Xbox live servers, changing my NAT to open, and thus allowing me to connect to my best friends party so we can play team doubles on Halo 4!

Anyway... I have tried opening the ports by accessing my router by typing its IP address into the URL. When I do this however, I receive an error message saying "this webpage is unavailable." I have tried this with both the Default Gateway and the IPv4 Address to no avail.

I was wondering if one of the experts from this website could take a look at this game. I have tried everything from port forwarding to dmz. Everyone(50 or so players) that have routers cannot play without using VPN(Hamachi). We want to eliminate the VPN since it is very insecure. Maybe there is a program that can tunnel the information through a router that someone knows about?

Here is the game:

You can have up to 4 players.

There are 2 ways to try and launch a game.

Way 1:
Create a batch file with the following information:

cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Ants\
ants.exe / /n0USER /spike /1

Insert your ip where is and if you want to change the username where it says USER.

You will know when its working if you see your USER instead of your computers name.

Now the second way of launching:

Go to Ant s and signup for an account and join a gameroom and launch.

The game works just fine if you plug the computer directly into the modem. I am using windows vista and several other users are using xp. Yes i have a static ip setup. I do not have a software firewall and the windows firewall is turned off. I have a WRT54G.

This should be a good challenge for all the experts out there.

Hey all so I have forwarded some ports on my router with Airport Utility (NAT port forwarding), but using cmd netstat -n the ports I forwarded aren't listed and using online port checkers confirms they are closed. I added exceptions to my firewall (even though it is off), and windows defender is off, and Avast's shields are all off. I honestly have no idea how to open the ports up and haven't found a way to do this using Windows 8 (not pro).

Anybody have any ideas? It seems like Windows 8 is blocking these ports from opening for some reason. There doesn't seem to be an override function in cmd to open them, either.

In case you're wondering why I need the ports open, I'm trying to resolve a "request timeout" error when pinging somebody on Hamachi - so I'm trying to open the main ports Hamachi uses (I just want to play Terraria, man).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled?

Temporarily add your PC IP into the DMZ and try again , see if the internal/external tests then notice the ports open , this will test if it's a router or PC issue....

Don't forget to take it out of the DMZ after testing...

My daughter has a lot of Barbie CD-ROM games. There is one game she has that is rather old, yet it is really one of her favorites, Barbie's Magic Genie Bottle. This game came with a life-sized magic genie bottle that acted as a joy-stick. It has a motion sensor jewel on the front that you move your hand in front of, and the top comes off. Each of these things perfomed a function in the game.

I'm sure you can imagine the appeal to an 8-year-old little girl

Now, the problem is, I've gotten a.......hmmm....complete system overhaul, I guess you could say. A new, larger hard-drive, new processor and new motherboard. The OLD system had a gameport on the back of the computer. The new one doesn't. It only has USB ports.

Please, SOMEBODY, tell me that there is some sort of adapter, or someway I can make this Genie Bottle work with this system! If any of you have never lived in a house with an 8-year-old, Barbie-obsessed little girl, you have no idea of the drama and histrionics that are occuring here.

Is there any way I can make a Magic Genie Bottle with a gameport plug work with a tower that now only has USB ports???

Windows version is 10.0.15063 build 15063

Since the creators update I noticed that I cannot update any of the apps in the microsoft store. I noticed this finally when an app i actually use wouldn't open, and say that calculator and many others also all had errors and couldn't update or run. I then tried some troubleshooting steps which included

wsreset, reimage repair, sfc /scan now (no errors) and some powershell cleanings of the store. None of these worked. I decided to just rollback to before the creators update but noticed that settings and anything contained within, including windows update, add or remove programs and restore settings will not open either. I tried signing out and signing back into my microsoft account but no joy with that either. I've tried every solution i've come across online so far and no joy. Really thought this would fix it, as this is my exact issue: Windows 10 settings wont open ? [Solved] - Driver Easy but no luck, the tool says issue not found. Please, if anyone can save me from a fresh install that would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Settings wont open, store wont update, reset PC doesn't open either

Hi, if you want to try to 'Restore previous version' (roll back to 1607) you could try via
SHIFT + left click Restart
and navigate through the options.

Go Back to the Previous Version of Windows in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

As you can see from other threads, others have experienced seemingly intractable problems (e.g. vanishing icons, text...), and ended up doing a clean install.

Note: we strongly recommend the routine use of disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot disk + external storage for images.
That gives you a relatively quick way to restore your PC to a previously working state without technical help - even if you replace your disk.

If you had used that, and update your image before upgrading, you would have had another option.

The disk image also acts as a full backup.

Recently I am unable to open the Store app. After a small Windows 10 update, I have been unable to access the store. When I open the start menu and click the icon, it is unresponsive. Also when I go through my apps, it wont open when clicked there. I even had it pinned to my toolbar and the icon disappeared but left space and when I clicked there, I got an error message. Also, as I was typing this, my toolbar began being difficult. Certain things like the start icon, the calculator icon, or the internet explorer icon wont open when clicked. But the google chrome and the file explorer icons work well. I am not sure if there is a way for me to update the Store app or get it to launch through a browser or do I have to wait till another Windows 10 update to fix my problem.

Thank you for any advice or help in advance.

I don't know if this is normal or not but I'm worried about it.It would be great if anyone could tell me if this is ok or what to do if not.
I am on Windows XP.

Answer:Generic Host process for win32 listening to ports?

Hi ya Lain.
ZoneAlarm is just letting you know that something is accessing the internet.
It will flash when active.
If you have 2 internet apps active... let's say Internet Explorer and Outlook Express and one is actively using the internet...
The one that is will flash.
And in that case your probably just fine.

Whether it's a good or bad access can't be determined with ZoneAlarm though.

I would suggest you go to the "Malware Removal" section of this forum and post a hijack this log for review just in case.

Hi all, I am having intermittent issues with USB devices connect to the computer. I have several devices (USB card reader, camera...) all connected to USB ports on the back of the computer. Occasionally, one of these devices would stop responding. this has happened on several different systems so I dont think it is an issue with a single device... What I want to know is how many USB host controller are on each computer? Is there a separate controller/circuit for the 2 USB ports at the front than the 6 USB ports at the back of the computer? I am hoping to separate these devices to be on different controller/circuit to see if that help with the intermittent disconnect of USB devices. Hope some one can answer my question...I've been try to look for some documentation for the MB but non available... Thank you much.

Hi every one, im here to hope some one can solve my problem. i m playing warcraft 3 and i want to host a custom game. but after i did creat a game, no body had joined. i asked my friends and they said i have to turn off my firewall. however, the problem is i cant turn off it, i dont know how and where. so plz help me

Answer:How can i host pc game?

This all really depends on the type of firewall you have and/or if you have a firewall. There are two types of firewalls, a software firewall (a program running on your computer acting as a firewall) and a hardware firewall (often a network router for home users). If you have Windows XP it does include a firewall and you can find information about enabling and disabling it through the below document. many anti-virus programs such as Norton and McAfee include their own firewall, if you have one of these you may want to disable it by opening the properties of the program. Unfortunately it's different depending on which version of the program you're running. Finally, if you have a network router it's likely acting as a firewall. I don't recommend you disable it. However, you can open up whatever ports are required for the game to run. Information about how to do this can be found in your network router documentation.

I cannot open User Accounts in Control Panel, I keep getting ...

Microsoft (R) HTML Application host has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Anyone with a fix? . My appreciations in advance!

Answer:"User Accounts" in Control panel wont Open-Error is "Html application Host Error"

Do you have a recovery restore install disc or partition?
You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Value Name: SFCShowProgress
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

I use a Client for LAN gaming called Tunngle, I use it for an old game. This is kinda weird. Sometimes when me or my friend hosts, we can't find either of our sessions, and then later or the next day, it suddenly works. Why is this happening? Is the game just old? And there are times when we do see the game session, when me or my friend click join, it just crashes and freezes for 10 seconds and then resumes but doesn't join the game. Firewall isn't the problem, I checked it and it's approved the game and Tunngle. Can someone please help me fix this?

Anyone knows what's the problem? I believe it's not my router's problem, as I'm in my university's network, and all my friends under the same network are able to host. Also, I have been to almost 3 different networks, in which I'm not able to host in all of them.
I'm using AVG + Windows Defender.. I believe it's my own computer's security that is preventing me from hosting any games. (I can join without any problem)

Anyone know how can i fix the problem?

Hello TSG Folks!

I have an ISP supplied D-Link DI-624 router with four ethernet ports on the back. Two ports are being used by computers, one by a printer, and one is wired downstairs to a PS2. I am thinking about buying an Xbox 360 but I don't have enough ethernet ports. What can I do or what should I buy?

Also, I am looking for something to extend the range of my current router or a whole new router. What do you guys recommend? The router is (and will be) in the upper right corer of the house.

Thanks a ton!

How-To HOST a Computer Service/Game

Definition: Hosting; making a program available to the public Internet, using World Wide Web browser with a URL, FTP for file up/down loads, or Telnet/SSH for shell account access.

The mechanical issues are:
1. Obtain a Domain Name, which will assign a static IP address for your Domain.
2. Determine which system to which the IP address will point.
3. Port Forward the gateway router to the system with the program that is always running.
4. Open the required Port(s) for the program on that system.
Licensing issues may restrict particulars of the above and you need to validate these before you finalize items (2-3). For example, a normal End-User-License from an ISP typically comes with restrictions on hosting anything, including website, file serves and shell accounts and contain clauses which allow the ISP to disconnect you if violated.
Typically, to enable hosting, the ISP offers a Business Class License, which will then enable anything you, need.

In addition, software often comes with a Single User license and requires a multi-user or Commercial Usage license for everything else. After all your hard work (and expense to make this work), get this right before you get into trouble.

(1) Obtaining a Domain Name. For an annual fee, one of the Registrars will assign you a public IP address, associate it to the Domain Name of your choice (assuming it is still available), and make an entry into the global DNS s... Read more

I couldn't decide whether this was a Game problem or a Networking problem, but it seems to be more of a router thing, so I come here.

I have cable internet, 128kbps via a modem. It goes straight into our Cisco Linksys WRT160N wireless router. One cable goes out to my computer, and the rest of them are laptops via the wireless.

I play alot of Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, and Garry's Mod. This all uses the Steam client to host servers and the like. There is an in game server hosting, meant more for LAN, but usable over internet (instead of a dedicated server). However, I cant get it to host any game at all. It wont appear in the online list, but more importantly, it wont let my friends in. (There is the option to join the server your friend is in, and if you're hosting it, it should connect you. Instead it says that the server isn't responding)

I've tried some basic port forwarding, but it doesn't seem to work. Me and my friend can connect to servers, but outside of LAN, neither of us can host. No mulitplayer program to my knowledge has been able to host from my computer. As proof it is possible, one of my contacts hosts a server during the summer off his computer with no special setup.

Thanks in Advance,

I have had a normal experience up until a couple months ago i noticed that i couldnt run Portal 2 Multiplayer test chambers with my friend. At that time i did not know it but now i realize that mustve been when it started.

I have hosted servers on games for as long as i can remember, as i have always been able to port forward. Since that Portal 2 incident i had a bad streak of multiplayer games that i thought had just ceased to work.

1) Tried playing Anno 2070 with ports forwarded, Friend's connection timed out. Disregarded due to Anno servers being nerfed,

2) Retried Portal 2, still nothing.

3) Tried hosting a modded Mount and Blade warband server, could not get on. Disregarded because i assumed it was a conflict with the mod.

4) Tried hosting a minecraft server, friends could not connect, Disregarded due to oddness of trying to set up a server.

5) Just bought a new game, World in Conflict. Friend connection would time out. I forwarded all ports still no dice. I was FED UP.

6) Hosted a tried and true Mount and Blade Native server. This time. IT DID NOT WORK

I do not know why anything has changed but it was then that i realized that something was wrong and i was not able to host ANYTHING.

I checked my IPv4 and it has stayed the same. All ports are forwarded correctly, firewall has not changed. Why am i no longer to do anything. I went on a port checker and it said any port i had previously opened was now closed.

I dont know if it said that due ... Read more

Heya. I have barely any experience hosting game servers; the last time I did it was many years ago.
I'm wondering whether it's possible to host a game server (e.g. Counter Strike Source, or The Hidden) with a GNU/Linux operating system (probably Ubuntu) and have Windows-based clients connect to the server to play online.
I tried researching the issue but it seems this is not a popular question. Search results seem to indicate that it's perfectly doable, but reliable confirmation would be sincerely appreciated. Thank you in advance.

this will probably fit better under networking forum but i ought to write it here since it's game related anyway.

I have just returned to college where I stay at the dorms from a long summer vacation. I've been hooked on FFXI - the game during the summer. When i got to the droms, i tried connecting with POL but it won't connect giving me a "check your network cables" error. I'm pretty sure it's not the cables that are causing the problem.
The network on the college dorm disables most ports, and FFXI requires the following ports:
TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535
UDP 50000 - 65535
How can I enable these ports without contacting network administrators? because i have tried contacting them but they won't listen. they're so stupid they think everything is a risk (i know it is a risk but who would want to hack to a small college network anyway...)
I use broadband wireless for this, and connect using DELL Latitude laptop. I should also mention that the game works fine with me at home so my ISP is good with it. it's just with the college network that i'm facing this problem.. i wonder if there's any third party software that i can purchase that will help me do this.

Hello everyone,

I have just recently bought and installed a new motherboard and processor. Now, everything is up and running flawlessly in Windows 7 RC, except for one thing. I cant get the motherboard, which is a Gigabyte MA770-UD3 (rev.2.0), to recognize my XBOX 360 controller for Windows. I know the controller works, because I used it with my old mobo and Windows Vista 64-bit. Also, it works in my XBOX. The motherboard recognizes and operates my Logitech G15 keyboard and My Logitech USB mouse, just not the controller. I've tried the front and back ports. The back panels will not even acknowledge that I've plugged it in, while the front panel, while acknowledging that something was plugged in, says that it can't recognize the device, even though the drivers are installed correctly. If i plug the controller into a port on my G15 keyboard, Windows recognizes it, but states there is not enough power to operate it. Any suggestions or tips insolving this problem. Thanks.

Answer:Onboard USB ports not recognizing game controller

I bought and installed a new PCI sound card still no Sound, video and game controllers. As I was working on the computer, the USB keyboard stopped working. I rebooted and got it back. The next time I rebooted, I lost the USB keyboard and mouse. I tried a different USB mouse and different USB ports and none of the USB ports worked. At that point, I went and got a glass of wine.

I spent hours looking for suggestions on the web but none of the suggestions worked. Could the motherboard be going out? Does anyone have any suggestions.

Answer:NO Sound video and game controllers, then lost USB ports

Sounds like a power draw issue is that sound gone when using game controllers or is that just what it is saying? At this point try resetting the USB stack.

Refreshing the USB Stack
a. - Device Manager –

b. Expand USB Serial Controllers - RIGHT CLICK on EVERYTHING and UNINSTALL all except the category itself. (If you have a USB keyboard/mouse do it last then unfortunately reboot the pc via the power button, as the keyboard/mouse will be gone. you can avoid this if you have a ps\2 port and keyboard to use to do this)

c. REBOOT the computer. This refreshes the drive and the USB stack

I wanted to host ventrilo on my PC, but I use router Belkin F5D8235-4 v2000, so I dont know how to host it.

I have ventrilo server program.

Any help appreciated.

ScreenSnapr ? xf5gka.png

thats what router setup looks like

Answer:Host ventrilo behind router?

YOu either need to configure port forwarding (but I can't see an option for that) or use DMZ.

DMZ assigns your Internet (opposed to local) IP address to a specific PC and allows it to bypass going through router firewalls, nat etc.

If you have any questions or need any help please ask.

I've noticed that when connecting to a router the host name of my computer is published, along with the mac address.

I am not getting in to mac spoofing here; that is not my intention.
I simply generally do not like displaying more information than I must.

When dealing with public access routers (often that have no security and also default admin passwords) I would rather not display such information.

Using ubuntu, it was simple enough to not publish my host name (the mac address is of course still logged).

However, how can I do this in windows???

Answer:Hiding Host Name from Router

Hmm, if what you want is to make that your computer doesn't show up in "Network" pane in explorer, disable SSDP and Network awareness. But to be honest, there's no need to hide hostname, since it's tied to your IP address, doing a simple scan throughout the network will reveal many hosts, some may have hostname, some will show as IP address... I mean, hostname is just a "humane replacement" for IP address, nothing more.

I am running Windows XP Home edition SP2.The router I have is a Linksys Broadband Wireless-B 2.4GHz Router model # BEFW11S4. The computer I am trying to host from is connected to the router by a wire (the wireless I use for my laptops).I have a DSL connection with a dynamic IP, and i use a PPoE connection.

I was able to host various games before the router was added to the mix. After the router was hooked up, I could not host games.I tried to mess with the router settings to see if I could get it to work, but no matter what I do I can't seem to set it up.

I'm pretty good with computers in general, but I am not good with networking at all, just seams to confuse me the more i try to work with it.

Hopefully someone out there may have some answers or ideas to help me out. Afterall, who wants to depend on their online buddies to be there when you want to host a game
Thx, Wasper

Answer:Cant Host Games w/ new Router

Port Forwarding should resolve your issue.

So I want to use an old box I have to hold my media and things like that so I can access them elsewhere. Well I planned on using linux for this box so I have to use for my dns host because i have dynamic ip. On to the problem...

So if I directly type in my external IP I can connect just fine without problem, but when I try and use the DNS name that I picked it wont work at all. I have check my software and hardware firewalls and they are configured to allow access to the necessary ports. And when I ping the dns it comes back with results, but I still can't connect to it. Any help here?

Thanks guys,

Answer:Trying to host an FTP, DNS wont work!

try start run cmd, then type in nslookup in the command prompt, should give you a slighty different prompt. Then type your dns name in and see what ipaddress it resolves too, sounds like your dns isn't resolving to the correct ip address.

How do I ensure that my laptop computer's name shows up in the attached devices page of my Netgear DG834PN Router?

If I run IPCONFIG /ALL the host name shows my computers name correctly. However it is shown as "unknown" on my Netgear Router.

Other laptops running XP show up the hostnames correctly on the router.

I didn't think it was an OS specific problem but I'm at a bit of a lost now

Answer:Host names on Netgear Router

Answer:setting up router to allow me to host games

You need to open up ports on the router, check out for help on that:click hereIf you have standard 8Mbps BB, you will struggle as the upload is very poor, at around 0.5 Mbps.If you are struggling to port forward your router I would think twice about letting the world in.

I have a linksys router, and I'm having some trouble having my friends connect to the webserver I set up. I tried to use port forwarding on port 80, but they still can't connect. :\
Can anyone help a newbie like me out? :]

Answer:Trying to host a webserver thru Linksys Router

What IP address are they connecting to? It should be the router's address if you have set it to auto-forward all requests received on to the server's IP address.
