Cannot Open Certain Sites in IE or Mozilla on Vista Machine - XP Machine works fine

Question: Cannot Open Certain Sites in IE or Mozilla on Vista Machine - XP Machine works fine

have two laptops - one running Vista and one running XP. Both have IE 7 and Norton 360 installed. I've verified the settings for IE and Norton are the same on both machines.

On my Vista machine, which is my main computer, I cannot access certain sites, specifically www.dilbert.com and www.advantiscu.org. They appear to be loading, but never load. I've tried with both IE 7 and Firefox, but I get the same result. In addition, the daily Dilbert cartoon that I subscribe too is received in Outlook but the graphics do not display. The graphics are not visible in my Yahoo webmail either.

However, on my XP machine, everything works just fine...no problems.

Like I said, I've verified settings on both machines...I've even done a restore to a previous restore point...no help. I've reset my router, disabled Norton, etc...everything I can think of and nothing has worked.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all - running WLM 2012 on my Windows 8 Netbook using 10 accounts - all perfect.

Needed a clone on my Windows 7 Desktop machine with exact Database Navigation and Folder Tree for same 10 accounts as a final message destination, setting my Netbook to "Leave messages on server" for mobile usage.

So Installed WLM 2012 on Desktop; fine. Copied cloned Database from Netbook over to AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail.

Worked immediately, like a charm, all folders and messages in exact same folder tree and accounts (passwords to input manually) one 100% OK. Hurray!

However after 4-5 shut down/start-ups of WLM the entire folder tree collapsed into a basic tree consisting of just basic INBOX/DRAFT/SENT/Unwanted Mail/Deleted for each account, showing no messages, although all cloned data was still resident on disc in its correct above location.

No way to retrieve nor show any messages... nor the intended navigational structure - vanished (although data was in its original location)

Uninstalled WLM, delete clone Database, did the whole operation over again and hey presto, everything back OK.

After 4-6 shutdowns/startups of WLM 2012 the navigation Folder Tree collapsed back into 10 basic 5-line account blocks, not showing any messages, although all of them still reside in AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail.

What is this? How can initially everything run fine as intended and then... vapourise?

Driving me mad as I did the exercise 6 ... Read more

Answer:WLM Database clone on new machine initially works fine - then vanishes

Hi Sam, welcome to Seven Forums.
It could be down to how your mail accounts are set-up.
I sign-in to WLM 2012 on both my pc's with the same Microsoft account but only use my Gmail account. If I read a message on my Desktop it will not be available on my Laptop as Gmail archives messages when accessed by POP.
Do you use POP or IMAP ???

I have a new Gateway Vista 64 machine for my office . The old HP Pavillion Pentium 4 with XP 32(?)is networked in other room Here's my setup:
Ethernet network with a new wireless Netgear router (yes,it has places to plug in the ethernet cords).
-HP Laserjet 1200 printer is plugged directly into the Vista 64 machine.
The XP Unit is on the network.
I can see and share files between the machines just fine but I get an error when choosing the networked printer in "add printer" when setting up XP unit.
(Print sharing is turned on on Vista Machine).
I choose the networked printer found on Gateway, it says that it will install drivers onto my machine to make things work, I click ok and it says that server for my printer has the wrong driver installed, would I like to find right driver? Clk yes. It looks for a VSFILE\XP but can't find it. It tells me to manually find the file but I can't find that file on HP site or any of my discs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled original drivers onto the XP machine (PCL6) and downloaded a Universal PCL5 printer file. None correct the problem. Vista automatically loaded the printer drivers when I turned on the power. It has a PCL5 file. The 1200 printer works fine when printing from Gateway machine. Vista will only let me use the drivers already installed in the machine. When I try to manually try to install drivers downloaded from HP for an XP on the the vista then it balks and says they were not created for an X6... Read more

I ended up hiring someone to solve this mess. He just created local ports on each machine that directs the pre-downloaded, local driver, to the printers. Worked just fine. Start, Run, //"name of network" to see if printers can be seen on the network 1st.

imediately after clicking on shutdown with an update ready to install, on shutting down, i got the blue screen, machine-check-exception, uncorrectable hardware error, technical information ***stop:0x00000124 (0x00000000, 0x81FD6028, 0xB6200047, 0x0102010A) or***stop:0x0000009C (0x00000003, 0x8196AF0D, 0xB6200007, 0x0002010A

Answer:machine-check-exception on vista 32 machine

It would appear the 0x0000124 is related to the PCI Express Bus, ie Graphics card Driver or Chipset Software, possibly BIOS conflict. Therefore I would update drivers:a) Chipset Softwareb) PCIe Graphics Card Driver if you have a Graphics Card

Any advice on how to do this? I have file sharing enabled on both computers. When I view computers and devices from my vista machine, I see my XP machine, but it is showing up as a media device. When I click on it, windows media player opens. It doesn't seem like it should do this since I am sharing more than just media files. In windows media player i get the error, "Before you can access files in this library, you first must have access to this library".

Did you change the network to private network on Vista? Shared folder will not be visible under public network.

I have basically two questions.
1) does anyone know if Aloha Bob's PC Relocator Ultra can work with Vista?

2) Is anyone aware of anyproducts, preferably shareware or freeware that can migrate both data/settings and programs from Win98 to Vista Home Premium?

Thanks

Answer:Moving from a Win98 machine to a Vista Machine

I don't imagine there are any software apps with that feature - any of them new enough to work with Vista would likely not bother with Win98. Data won't be hard to migrate, but I don't imagine Win98 programs would work the same on Vista... You will probably have to reinstall the programs - if they are compatible. (My CD burning software, for example, was compatible with XP but caused the PC to not boot when I tried to install it on Vista) Settings are probably going to be a lot different on Vista vs. Win98...

Hi,
I've checked here and on a couple of other places; many people seem to have similar problems but not similar enough that I've been able to solve it.

I have a HOME workgroup on my Vista machine that is connected to the printer I want to share. I have made HOME the workgroup on my W7 laptop. The Vista machine is able to access folders on the W7 and the W7 "sees" the Vista machine... the network map on W7 shows a "dotted" line from W7 - Vista but when I try to connect from W7 to Vista it will not accept a logon. I have tried using my normal Vista machine User Name and password and even tried creating a new one just for this connection but Windows Security always says "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password".

One of the other sites suggested that Client for Microsoft Networks needed to be installed on the W7 laptop but when I checked the properties for the W7 NIC there was no Install option... does W7 need Client for Microsoft Networks?

All settings on the Vista Sharing and Discovery are on.

TIA

Answer:Windows 7 machine cannot connect to Vista machine

I finally figured out that it was Vista machine firewall (AT&T Internet Security Suite by MacAfee) that was blocking the W7 machine from accessing the Vista machine.

After I checked the box in Port and System Services to allow RDP access, I was able to access both the Vista computer and its attached printer from the W7 machine.

I have my first windows 7 computer on my home network, and it appears to me I have outgoing networking, but not incoming. On the Windows 7 computer, I can get to the router and the Internet, and can access shared folders on Vista machines on the home network. The computer name "advertising protocol" works as the name of the Windows 7 computer in the "Network" user interface on the Vista machines (the user interface accessed from Network and Sharing Center by 'view computers and devices"), but attempting to access it gets a "cannot access" error, and attmepting to diagnose gets a "cannot find" error. For whatever it is worth, highlighting the icon in the "network" user interface does not show anything for "location".

I am going through this to get shared folders on the Windows 7 computer visible on other computers on the network. Obviously this is not working. Just to recap the configuration:
1) all computers on the network are members of same Workgroup
2) My documents on the Windows 7 computer are shared read-write with everyone
3) advance sharing options show:
Network discovery ON
File and print sharing ON
Public folder sharing ON
128 bit encryption
Password protected sharing OFF
IPv6 disabled
Homegroup stuff either OFF or ON and managed by Windows (but this is irrelevant)
4) firewall off

I noticed something funky with MacIDs. the router - when the Windows 7 computer authenticates - sh... Read more

Answer:Cannot ping W7 machine from any vista machine

Why is IPv6 disabled? You do realize that IPv6 is only used on the LAN and is needed for Homegroups to work correctly. Maybe you were just thrown off by the first picture below which is only telling you that IPv6 is not connected to the WAN because it's not supposed to be.

The second picture shows it as enabled for the LAN.
It doesn't matter much either way unless you are Homegroup, but Homegroup only works with Windows 7 computers. For Vista and Win 7 you need to use either workgroup or public file sharing. You also need to enable file sharing on the Vista machine.

You should not need to turn the firewall off.

Are you sure that you are sharing the correct group. There is a seperate public file sharing settings page but the workgroup and homegroup use the same settings page.

Maybe you were thrown off because there are two settings pages. The third picture is the Homegroup and Workgroup settings page and the fourth one is for the Public file sharing.

Probably this is something simple in IE7 options/settings but I failed to figure it out.

This is happening on my desktop (am writing this on my laptop). It's failing to connect, with the exception being "secure" sites - https://....

Email is working fine.

Thanks

PS this happened after we did Microsoft livecare free scan and implemented corrective actions (malware/virus deletions); it then prompted us to reboot, then indicated new Windows updates to install, and then it prompted us to re-install IE7

I use MS Works (8.5) database for my company booking info, and mail merge the database into confirmation letters etc (MS Works word processor).

My office has a few computers networked, and they've all got works 8.5 on them, all of them mail merge without problems - except for my own desktop machine!!

As soon as I select Tools > Mail Merge > Open Data Source I get the error:

'Works cannot open the mail merge list you selected. The file may be damaged, or it may be in a file format that Works does not support.'

Can I stress again - these files work fine on all other machines (all XP), and the message pops up before I even select which file to merge with!!? Literally when I hit the menu item!

I tried uninstalling Works, removing all mention in the registry, and reinstalling - it still does it. The database file and letter files to merge them with are all held on another computer in the office, all computers access them the same way - using the MSHOME network, no workgroup or anything.

Any ideas?? Please help!!

I just tried opening one of the mail-merge letters and linking it to a completely empty database file, saving it and trying that on the problem computer. It still gave the error.

So it's 100% not the contents of any of the database fields that are causing this.

Hello,

I have recently started a new project (I'm still a big newbie!), using the technique outlined here:

http://ryanfarley.com/blog/archive/2004/12/23/1330.aspx

Basically, it uses an embedded browser to act as a display. It requires AxInterop.SHDocVw.dll and Interop.SHDocVw.dll to run, and I suspect this is causing a problem when trying to run it on other machines. For some reason it works fine on mine, but I've tried two other computers and it causes an "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled". I also tried running the sample download application at the web address above, and it too runs fine on my computer, but not the other two.

I guess I'm wondering what's going on. If it makes any difference, I know that the .NET 1.1 framework is running on at least one of the machines where the application is not working.

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

Thank you,
TomJ

I have already tried the EASE ACCESS option but could'nt find to stop this Short Cuts as these keys are well working in My virtual machine , Can any one suggest the answer of it.

Answer:Keyboard shorcuts opens, when i press R it opens the RUN Command window & when i press E it opens the My computer , How should i remove these shorcuts. When i use these keys in my Virtual machine it works fine, Kindly guide me in this issue

Hi ABDUL WASI,
Thanks for the post!
It seems the shortcut keys are messed up. Did you get this issue before?
By default, Win+R is used to open Run command, and Win+E for opening Computer. It seems these shortcut keys are changed. Now, if you press Win+R or Win+E, which windows will show?
If you figure out which application used this two shortcuts keys. Right-click the application, choose Properties - Shortcut Tab, what's behind the Shortcut key box? Change it with another shortcuts key.
Also fully scan your computer, and if you have a backup, a system restore could help you come back to a nearlier time.

I have an issue that I have never seen before. The core problem is that often, when I go to websites, Chrome seems to be stuck on ?resolving host? for 4 to 10 seconds, and eventually brings the website up. The same DNS lookup lag happens in Firefox, Edge, and IE as well.

I have tried connecting via both wired and wireless, and get the same issue either way.

I have tried disabling IPv6, no help. I also tried with both the ISP-provided DNS serves and Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4), same trouble either way.

We have another PC on the same network, also wired, that has NO trouble with DNS, websites come up very fast. We've even swapped the router plug spots, to no avail.

On the problem PC I?ve even gone to a command prompt and typed in ?nslookup?, and sometimes I get timeouts right away. Sometimes nslookup says:

I have been a ThnkPad-only user for over fifteen years. I just got a brand new replacement machine for my old one. The new one is T431s. The machine is otherwise quite nice, but the combined clickpad/touchpad is, well, not up to the task. I actually like the new keyboard, but the "clickpad" is a huge disappointment. The main issues are that 1) it is a way too stiff to be used in an ergonomic way, 2) if you have the "touchpad" enabled from the BIOS it should obey tapping as a left click (but it does not if I have positionoed the cursor by the trackpoint). I could manage with the current system if the "clickpad" would not be a way too stiff for normal use, or you could make it to read the touch of fingers without "clicking" the pad. Every other feature of the machine is fine, but the "clickpad" is a real showstopper in a machine that should be one of the most ergonomic to use. Now it is not. The problems could be helped by software only, but I really, really miss the old ultranav. Edit: Typo corrected.

Answer:T431s "clickpad" a real disappointment in fine machine

Agreed. If there was a way the clickpad could be disabled and yet the buttons respond to tapping, thereby reducing the force necessary to actually initiate the click, that might be an acceptable solution. As it stands you are not alone if you're finding your hands tired at the end of the day from all the manipulation required of this enormous button.

I have found many similar problems to mine, but not the exact one so here goes.

HP Pavilion, Windows 7, 64 bit home premium, i7. Westell 327W wireless router (at&t version)

I have no problem at all connecting to the internet via the wireless connection in my new desktop. But often when I connect with the LAN enabled it simply refuses to connect. The problem is very repeatable with yahoo.com, att.com/speedtest and other sites. I can see and access the rest of my network fine wired only. And on the occasions I have been able to connect, the speed tests are fine.

I just have no idea why it occasionally refuses to connect (have not been able to connect to these sites for several hours now after multiple reboots) via wired and never has any issues over wireless. I have already disabled the router firewall and have the same issue with all non-windows services disabled.

Help!

Answer:Windows 7 machine fine to internet via wireless / won't connect wired

You need to decide whether the problem is with the wired ports on the router or with the computer that is plugged in. Have you got another computer you can plug in to the router?

Hello,
We are having a problem with one of our VP's machines. I have looked everywhere, and tried all I can think of. Here is the background, we are running a windows XP/Server 2003 network with a SAN. Every week or so, This VP will have all the documents from a random folder from his my docs show up as corrupted.
If he tries to open a word doc, he will get a prompt asking him to select the encoding that makes your document readable. None of the given options work. If he tries to open a pdf he gets an error message saying the file extension is not supported or the file is damaged.
Here is the weird thing: The files themselves are not corrupted. They open up on the server with no issues, They will open up on my local machine with no problems. If I move the folder from its current location, to another server or client machine, and then back, he no longer has the problem. Nothing is done with the files themselves. I have checked the permissions on the files and folders, those are all fine. We have checked the networking ports and equipment between the server and his machine also fine.

Thank you in advance for any assistance,
-Todd

I have spend the last 10 stupid days, all of which were stupid, trying to analyze what happened.
I thought it was a corrupted windows file. As it turns out, and I have examined my boot log file which I created, this file is a new virus, hxxp://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_157111.htm
which was detected by Mcafee on 5/20/09. I have just updated my .dat file for my virus scan and I'm now scanning, again..... all 370,000 files on my seagate hard drive. This first time I ran the scan, there were about 24 files which were quaranteened. I'm not sure where they are placed.

My machine will not boot. Here is the boot log from ntbtlog.txt:

Questions:
1. What version of Windows are you using?
2. What anti virus are you using? I see you mention McAfee but only in that they detected it (unless you're saying that YOUR McAfee scanner found it).
3. Have you tried booting into safe mode?
4. If its a virus, you know you were infected. Is there a way for you to scan that drive for spyware? (either hook it up in another computer, hook it up as an external drive to another computer, or create a boot disk with spyware scanning on it such as UBCD)

The AthlonXP is the Host and the Laptop is the Guest. Hello friends!

I have a computer with a PIII 866 MHz. processor, 128 MB SDRAM, 20 GB Segate HDD, VIA VT8601T motherboard and Windows 98SE as the OS. The problem is that since the last few days my computer has become very very slow. My first thought was that a virus can be a reason and therefore I deleted all partitions, created two new partition with 4 GB and 16 GB respectively. After formatting it with FAT32, I reinstalled Windows 98SE, but still no gain. The system seems to work like a 486 machine and hangs everytime I try to open two or three application at a time. Bare Windows 98SE without any other softwares installed takes more than 4 to 5 minutes to start and a 20 MB file takes about 2 minutes to be copied to the HDD from a CD.

I just dont understand why the hell is the system working so very slow. This all started after I gave my CPU to a hardware engineer recently to replace my SMPS and I dont know why, but I have a feeling that my HDD has been changed.

Now, what can be the reason behind all this. Is such a kind of problem arise due to faulty HDD or SMPS. If not, what can be the other reasons behind it. Is there any way to solve this problem. As per my view, I see no problem with the software settings as it is the same as they always used to be.

Please help...

Thank you.

A bad or failing hd will slow WAY down. Here are some things to check.

1 Download and run the hd mfg's utility for checking the drive.

2 Give the mb a VERY close inspection. Look for bulging and or leaking capacitors. If you find any, you have found the problem.

3 If all of the hw checks out ok, make sure dma is enabled for the hd. I am not a win9x guy so I do not remember, however I think win9x defaults to disabled.

G'day all! (first post here!! :P)

Ok..so this is my situation:

I have a server...and i have installed a printer to it - the Canon LBP 3200 - the server is a 32bit machine running win7 pro...anyways...this printer does not have ANY 64bit drivers (which my main machine runs win7 ulti x64) so i am unable to install the printer on my main machine...

I was wondering, is there a way to share it from the server to the 64bit machine without installing any drivers?

Or is there a way to install 32bit drivers on a 64bit Machine?

Or can anyone find any 64 bit drivers/custom 64bit drivers?

:S

Thanx all!!

Answer:Sharing a printer from 32bit machine to 64bit machine without drivers.

ok so i tried this method: Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

But when i make my own port name it says access is denied... :S

any help?

I recently got a 1.8GHz Celeron computer from a family member who bought a new computer, but they dropped it while bringing it over. When I started it up, it booted up pretty quickly. But when I'm actually in Windows, it runs as slowly as my old 1GHz machine and sometimes when opening things it has long delays. I thought it might just be Windows being old, so I did a clean install. But that didn't fix it. Now I think it might be one of the hard drives or my cd drives, since at the BIOS diagnostic screen it sometimes hangs at them. Other than scandisk, which didn't return anything, is there a way to find out where the bottleneck is occuring without having to spend money I don't have?

Well, it depends on which OS you have. If it's Vista or XP, then you may want to change the graphics settings so they're lower, because they consume memory.

On my Surface Pro 4, when using IE 11 some web site streaming (e.g. CNN Go, MSNBC Live, etc.) have no audio (video is fine), while other audio is fine (e.g. YouTube). The same sites stream fine on the SP4 in Edge, and stream fine on my desktop using both IE 11 and Edge. It appears that HTML5 sites are fine but Flash sites are not. I've looked at all of the places I could think of (Flash and audio settings, etc.) but cannot seem to find what's causing no audio of some streams in IE on the SP4.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

I'm having issues connecting to a VPN I have established at home. I have confirmed this works on machines on other networks, operating systems, etc. I can even get it to work on my machine via Ubuntu.

It is definitely something local, however I cannot seem to nail it down.
I get "Error 720 - A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection".

This is a PPTP connection with CHAP v2 encryption. All other computers and devices it has worked on required no configuration (Just typed in IP/credentials and it auto connected).

I have tried-
-Resetting IP stack
-Uninstalling, reinstalling TCP/IP and all WAN Miniport drivers
-Changing to all different encryption types/protocols on adapter settings
-Disabling IPV6 from the VPN adapter
-Multiple different networks (locations)
-Probably more that I have not listed.

I have tried all of the fixes I was able to find through searches to no avail.

Hi! Tried doing a lot of searching on here and google, but didn't find a resolution.
I have a Machine with Windows 7 Alienware x86 hosting a shared network printer.
I am able to find and print on a machine with Win7 Home Premium x64 with no problem. Both machines belong to the x64 Homegroup.
I have a netbook with Win7 Starter and find the printer on the network and even try adding it with \\hostname\printername. I find it no problem and drivers install on the netbook, but when I try to print it does nothing. Works great on the other two machines. Any help would be appriciated. I also joined the homegroup to see if that helped, but it didn't.

Answer:Shared printer works from 1 machine, but not another

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Instead of typing \\hostname\printername try \\hostnameIPAddress\printername or just \\hostnameIPAddress then press enter.
The IP Address can be obtained by running an ipconfig /all command from the computer that's sharing the printer.

An update will be nice.

Hi,

I have just been given an Asus laptop as a present, it is running Windows 8. I have a copy of Works 7 from a previous machine and wondered if it would work on the Windows 8 laptop?

Thanks,

Gerald

Answer:Will Works 7 work on a Windows 8 machine?

I would not even bother. It is not even a supported package by Microsoft. I would not be surprised if Microsoft did not incorporate something into the Windows 8 code to keep their discontinued software from being able to be installed. Works 7 was for Windows 98, Works 9 is the last one that could possibly work with Windows 8.

My problem seems to be the opposite of most people's - I added a Windows 7 laptop to my previously all-XP network without any trouble, simply enrolling the new machine in the existing Workgroup, and everything works fine.

Except for just one snag: from my XP machine I can see every single file on the Windows 7 machine, which raises privacy issues even within a family!

How do I stop this happening, and revert back to the situation I had before, where machines on the network could only see each other's shared folders?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:How do I stop my XP machine seeing every file on networked Windows 7 machine?

Well, a rough and dirty security fix would be to make sure that "Password Protected Sharing" in the Network and Sharing Center is set to "On." That way the files will be safe but still visible.

Are you logging into w7 with a password?

Create an account below Administrator level with a password and use that.

Theoretically w7 should not allow a drive to be shared, so check all the folders that show the "Share" symbol and set the Share to "Not Shared".

I am trying to help a friend get her new Win-7 machine set up. I used the printer set-up wizard to install a networked printer in the new machine with absolutely no problem. Proved it would print from that machine.

Now, I get a call informing me that her old XP machine, which had been printing to the network printer with no problems, will no longer print. Documents go into the print queue, but they don't get printed. No error messages show up. I did some messing around via remote access, and finally removed the printer with the intention of reinstalling it. Scanning for network printers turned up several redundant instances of the same printer with different names. Some are identified as "invalid" some a "access denied". Bottom line. I can't get any of the selections to install.

On the Win-7 machine I did find a window that indicated that the printer is designated as being shared, but I didn't explicitly set it for sharing when I installed it. Also, I somehow got to a window that told me that for printers that were to be shared with other versions of windows I could optionally install drivers to support such machines. Didn't have the driver disk handy and took the window down. Now I can't even find it again.

I need some help in sorting this all out. Part of the problem is that out there in "network land" there are redundant remnants of previous installations that are being remembered inappropriately. I'd really li... Read more

Answer:Sound on new e machine works only part-time

Besides the fact that the symptoms will not make for a reasonable diagnosis, the fact that, "This is a brand new e machine." means that you should take it back where you bought it rather than mess around with it yourself.

You may void the warranty simply by opening up the case?

Here's a new one, it looks like.
Lenovo Ideacentre B520
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection (ethernet)
NETGEAR ProSafe Gigabit 8 Port VPN Firewall FVS318G (T1 incoming)
I plug the Lenovo in to the ethernet cable in my office, get link & data transfer lights, connect to the internet, everything works
Bring it out to different office (it's replacing an old XP machine, which connects on the cable I'm about to mention)
Plug it in to ethernet, no lights, Network Cable is Unplugged
Plug cable back into old XP machine. It connects.
Bring out a Win7 Home Premium SP1 laptop. It connects.
Plug back into Ideacentre, nothing.
Drag ideacentre back into my office. It works again.
Have you ever heard of this? Ever?
The Ideacentre is new, so it's never worked on this area before. Also, I have 3, and they're behaving identically.
ALSO, sometimes when I plug in the ethernet cable the green and yellow indicator lights will blink once at me, and then never again :'(
But only sometimes.

In summary: The cable's good, works with 2 other machines. The port/NIC card is good, works in my office, the only difference between the two locations is that I have an extra router in my office that I don't have in the office the Lenovo is going in, so it MUST be something in the settings, but I can't tell what's different between the machines that work and the Lenovo.

We have a script that installs an application on a user's box. It can run on XP, Vista, Win 7.... So it uses the ver command and find to figure out what the os is. It used to run on my win 7 box. Answer:find command no longer works on my win 7 machine

findstr is not failing because it uses regular expressions to find strings (unless you specify otherwise) so it's not literally interpreting the string you're inputting. In order for it to interpret the string literally, you'd want to use the following:

findstr /C:"Version 6.1"

Hey all, I just got an awesomely unexpected birthday present of a new emachine T2862 that has XP on it, saving me from having to scrape up the dough to replace my 5-year-old CompUSA Home Series refurb-p.o.s. Although I think I remember reading somewhere that emachines were not that good, but I believe it should at least be an improvement over the old one, being 5 times faster and with 5 times bigger hard drive! Expecially considering I'm just about broke financially.

I haven't even opened the box yet, I want to do my homework first on what I need to do... I want to transfer a lot of files from my old computer to the new one. From what I've been reading here, it seems like my best bet is to get some kind of transfer cable -- exactly what kind, where can I get one, and about what will it cost? I've never hooked up 2 computers to each other before, and I don't know what's involved... if it helps, this old thing is running Windows 98, and what I want to transfer is:

1) my music - mostly copied off of CDs and stored in windows media player playlists, I don't want to have to re-copy them b/c the reason I copied them to the computer is some of the CDs had been played so much they were getting warped/scratched etc, besides it's time-consuming - I know copying from one computer to the other doesn't save much time, but it would save me from having to keep sticking in the next CD, doing the copy, and then having to re-type in the library i... Here's a strange issue--at least I think it's strange. I have an old application that I've had since I had Win XP. I'm not sure but I think I had it even on Win 98. Even though it's an old app I was able to install and run in on Vista and Windows 7. I now have the pre-release Win 8 installed on VMware Player and I was wondering if it would run in Win 8. So I opened Win 8 and put in the CD, clicked on the setup.exe file and it installed--or so it seemed. It always installed a short cut on my desk top before. So I looked and didn't see it. It was supposed to have installed in a particular folder, but I couldn't find it. I then installed it again and chose to put a short cut on the desk top. But, it wasn't there. The bottom line is that even though I had Win 8 open in the guest, I discovered that it actually instaledl on Win 7--on the host machine even though I installed it while the guest machine was open. Has anyone seen anything like that before? I suppose it happened because it was such an old app.

Answer:App installed on host machine while in guest machine

When you put the cd into your drive, it fired the autoplay on your host machine and not within your Windows 8 VM. It installed on your Windows 7 host machine. If you had been in the VM, and launched the setup from within the VM, it would not have installed on your host machine. PERIOD.

Hi.

I have a network problem. My windows 7 machine is not detecting win xp machine whereas win xp machine is detecting win 7 machine.
They are in the same workgroup named Home. And the networking system is set to work. I have left the homegroup I was previously in. I enabled file sharing for devices that use 40 bit and 50 bit encryption.
On XP I have enabled NetBios over TCP/IP.
File sharing is enabled on both computers.
I think it's something obvious as both instalations on different computers are really fresh and both windows haven't been tampered with.

Thank you for your assistance.

My brother just built a Windows 7 machine, and we are trying to connect it to his old Windows XP Pro machine via crossover cable to transfer over his files, but nothing I have tried has worked. I have them both in the same workgroup, I have followed all the guides I have been able to find online, and I still can't get the machines to recognize one another. What do I need to do? If someone could give me a walkthrough, I'd really appreciate it. This is my first time using Windows 7, so I'm not familiar with anything.

Hi,
I am having trouble connecting from an XP (Home) desktop machine to a Win 7 (Home Premium) laptop to share files.
I have read and followed a lot of posts to no avail.
specifically I have followed the advice in "How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing"

- both machines are in the same workgroup
- there is no trouble going from Win 7 to the XP box
- on win 7 the network is defined as a 'Work' network
- firewalls are disabled on both boxes
- Advanced Network settings
- Network discovery in ON
- File and Printer Sharing is ON
- Public folder sharing is ON
- password protected sharing is OFF
- Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections
- the shared folder in Win 7 says its shared (its not in the public tree)
- On folder Advanced setting decurity, 'Everyone' has been added
- On folder Advanced setting sharing it says "People without a user account and password for this computer can access folders shared with everyone"

The XP box is using XP Home which can only use 'Simple File Sharing'.
On the XP box the win7 machine appears in the Network list under the workgroup.
If I click on the machine I get a login prompt!
Attempting to map a drive to the win7 box the same network is shown browsing to the win7 machine does not list any of the shares. (it also does not ask for a login)

Interestingly if I go back to the network and enter the userid / password then I can see the shares... Read more

have you tried BARTPE? create an XP live CD using the bart pe builder and you can boot from CD drive of the machine where your wonky hard drive is. from there you can access your C: drive and copy your files on to another computer on the network or on to a USB device.

You cannot use the key with the upgrade. You have to actually allow 7 to see the XP installation first. Then you do a custom install (clean). Just finally upgraded myself.
There are soem other work arounds for this. Just google it.

I,m new to this development and deployment and am running into a strange problem. I developed an ACCESS db on a laptop. Everything seems ok, it works. I used the Package Wizard and created an installation package. When I installed it on another machine I am now getting errors in the deployment machine that I do not get in the development machine. I seems to be coding issues. Can't load data into field for example.

Why would I get these on the deployment machine and not the development machine? Am I unaware of some way to test the code in the deployment machine? Otherwise how do I solve the problem if I can't deplicate the error in the development machine where I can stop the code and see the problem. I feel like I am missing some trick or secret.

Thanks

Answer:Errors in deployment machine not in development machine

Once it is deployed you need to run the connection command on the client to connect to the back end database. Are you using SQL server or all Access for the back end?

On my laptop I initially had Windows 7, and within Windows 7 I had a Linux virtual machine (Oracle VirtualBox). Windows 7 then got upgraded to Windows 10, and now VirtualBox (which was working perfectly prior to the upgrade) now does not work.

When I attempt to start up the Linux virtual machine, it causes a blue screen, and I am told my laptop has encountered a problem and needs to restart. Then that's what happens and it happens every time. I have consulted people on the VirtualBox forums and
they tell me it's a Windows 10 problem rather than a VirtualBox problem.

I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine.
Permissions on the XP that is hosting the database is set to allow everyone. And all the XP machines can access it at the same time.

Any ideas what is happening?

Answer:Solved: Can't open a shared file on a Windows 7 machine if it's already open on an XP

Fascinating problem. I've run into an issue like this and cannot remember the solution. I think I had to move the share to the windows 7 machine with all local network authentication turned off. I think anyways. Might have lowered NTLM authentication version in policies too (again on the 7 machine). Gah.. it was awhile ago.

Going to set this up on a small VM workgroup right now and test.

hello everyone, hope you guys can help me.
problem: im not able to view my files on my Sandisk 8gb flash drive. i plug it in, i hear the device sound, but nothing else happens. if i go into disk management the device is there, and i also see it properly installed in device manager. ive tried my plugging in my phone (have a ext. sd card) and a external hard drive and both work just fine. i plug this flash drive into my other windows 7 pc and it pops up instantly.
What ive tried to fix issue:
1. i removed the drivers and tried to reinstall. once i uninstall and reinstall the flash drive works perfectly the first time i plug it in , but then once i remove and plug it back, im back to square one
2. ive ran drivecleaner to completely remove EVERY usb driver install, no joy.
3. ive tried changing the drive letter, no go.
4. i formatted the flash drive twice in fat32 format
5. motherboard drivers are up to date, all windows updates installed
6. i ran virus/spyware/malware scan. nothing found
Any help would be greatly appreciated (seriously, i need this working!) . thank you in advance for your time and help.

edit: just forgot to add the flash drive works properly if i boot into safe mode.

Answer:USB Flash Drive not working in Windows 7 PC (But works in another Win7 Machine)

Do you have admin rights when you plug in your USB drive?  If not that can throw issues with windows.

Dont plug in your phone at all, reboot try the USB again.  Try taking it out and plug it in again.  Make sure your safely uninstall the USB drive, don't just rip it out.

Did you try all the USB ports?

Does the device show up in the device manager when it stops working?  If there is a yellow symbol near it go to scan disc website and see if there are drivers there for it.

Other things can be your phone, it can mess up USB drivers.  Look at the website of the phone for updates to drivers.

If all else fails you can download and reinstall your chipset and BIOS drivers.  A error could be causing it.  A refresh can fix it sometimes. (do a backup and restore with recovery disk before you do this just in case something happens).

good luck and let me know if you need anything else

Hey guys,

In the past two weeks or so, my Windows 7 x86 computer has been acting up. I always turn my computer off at night, and just lately upon turning it on I'm being presented with a BSOD (0x0000000A, 0x8327CA5B.) I've not many any radical changes to my OS and have not touched any components- it's all come a bit out of the blue.

Weird thing is, if I reboot my machine once the BSOD appears, it logs on fine. It seems like whenever I start the computer up from being turned off completely, I receive this error until I restart.

There are other problems, though. I've been seeing my PC lock up (albeit quite infrequently) just lately. I can't really pin point when this happens, as it seems to be completely random, but it's after having my PC on for a good five or so hours. Everything just locks up, the loading light on the computer goes dead and I'm forced to press button restart.

I have a computer running Windows XP Pro with an AMD Athlon XP 2200+. Recently, when I log on to my computer, my internet explorer is very slow to open my home page...usually times out. I'll have to restart the computer, which opens in Administrator Account for some reason. I log off of that and back into my account, and everything works fine. Any ideas?

Answer:IE very slow to open...restart....works fine.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what could be causing this? It just started like a week ago, and is really annoying to have to restart the computer just to go on the internet! Also, is there anyway to keep the computer from automatically going into the Administrator Account when restarting? I'm worried that my kids are going to go in there and end up screwing something up! Please help....I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but then I have no idea what is wrong with it. It's just slow like there is malware, so I posted in here! Thanks in advance for any help offered, or if you could point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated! Thanks again!

Win 10 machine has fileshare being accessed by XP and MAC machines without problems.
Trying to connect a Win 7 machine but it insists that the login does not have access to the share.
The login and password are valid. The share and security is open to everyone. All machines are in the same workgroup.
The win 7 machine can see other machines on the net and the Win10 machine can see into shares on the Win 7 box.

So it is just the win7 => win10 that is the problem.

Ok, this 'brilliant' idea I just had to save time and aggravation can't be possible--but I have to ask.

I have OEM Win10 + apps/data on my recent Lenovo P50.

I've installed a third party BIOS on my old Lenovo T61 (to run SATA II), replaced the cooling fan and will install a replacement SSD.

The P50 is twice the drive size as the T61's pending SSD 'but' the installed data on the P50 is less than the physical size of the T61.

If I restore (Reflect free current version) an image of the P50 to a clean T61 SSD would I get a properly functional Win10 identical to the information on the P50?

Answer:Can I image machine a to a new drive machine b?

Yes, the T61 has Win7 activated long ago that was an update from the longer ago OEM Vista.

Not activating kills my idea.

I'll just go ahead and do the previously downloaded Win10 iso and forget the bright idea.

Hello,

I regularly encounter the same problem that i can not access or see a XP machine from my W7 machine I could see before in my network. The strange thing is that remote desktop still works. The other way around stll works: I can see the W7 macine on my xp machine.
The only solution I can use to fix the problem is to do a system-repair.
At first this issue appeared after updating ms defender definitions. But yesterday it appeared just after a new startup without any update or change of settings on anything.

I'm completely dazzled about the cause of this problem.
I would like to know the real issue so i can use a proper fix instead of doing a system-repair every now and then.

any suggestions?

Answer:xp machine not vsible form W7 machine

couple of quick questions if I may,

1, is the Windows 7 machine assigned to a static IP on your router?
2. what is the IP of the Windows 7 machine? you can find this by opening command prompt and typing ipconfig /all if your behind a router it will probably look like 192.168.1.x
3. Have you actually shared any folders on the win 7 machine?
4. do you have password protected sharing OFF (this can be configured from network and sharing centre>turn off password protected sharing

My son's XP machine is channeling The Police. There appears to be a Ghost In The Machine. He has a Dell OptiPlex GX520. I bought it for him 4-5 years ago from a shop that recycles computers from businesses and sells them to the public.Last he told me that the computer has developed a vibration that causes an annoying buzz. I told him that if he brings it over, I'll take a look at it. Then he told me about a stranger problem.Since the buzz was annoying, he had started to turn the machine off via Start...Turn Off Computer. What's weird is that the computer has started to turn itself on in the middle of the night. He'll turn it off before he goes to bed and then wake up to hear it buzzing a few hours later. He now unplugs it every night.Any idea why the machine would power itself on? He connects to the internet via a wireless router rented from TWC. Somehow Wake On LAN seems like a long shot.message edited by DerbyDad03

Answer:XP Machine Powers Itself On - Ghost In The Machine?

On page 9 of the manual:http://www.levnapc.cz/ProductsFiles...it describes an 'auto power on' feature under power management in bios setup where you can set a specific time to turn on the computer. That's your ghost.

So I have an older machine that is set up correctly. I want to image that old machine, and image it to the new machine. But is there a trick to doing that since the machine is a whole different model?

Answer:Have old machine. Want to image it, and transfer to new machine. Possible?

Clone it with clonezilla to a new disk (or one that you do not care about overwriting all the data) and then boot. In linux you have a very high chance of success. In windows the chance is lower but since windows XP even that is high enough to try. For windows you probably want to put your SATA ports in IDE emulation mode otherwise you are likely to get a blue screen on boot due to the OS not using the AHCI driver by default.

I have two computers connected via a 4-port hub.
One computer is running Windows 2000 and the other is running Windows 95.
W2000 machine has the following
Computeer Name: ABC
Workgroup: Joey
IP Address:192.168.0.1
subnet:255.255.255.0

Windows 95 machine has the following:
Computer Name: DEF
Workgroup: Joey
IP Address:192.168.0.2
subnet:255.255.255.0

Both machines have there file sharing on and the little hand is under my C: drive and D: drive on both computers.

The Windows 2000 machine can see both computers but the Windows 95 machine can only see itself.

What am I dong wrong??

please help.

thank you,
SEnna

I'm looking to build a new machine, as mine is well over a couple of years old. I was wondering if anybody knows the difference in between a computer gaming machine, and a graphics machine? I do a lot of graphics on here, but also weill be getting back into gaming.

Answer:Gaming Machine Vs. Graphic Machine

Everyone i know who does graphics has a mac, (shudder)
and everyone i know who plays games has a PC,

Heh, i know this didnt help you out to much, but i couldnt resist.

Knowing not jack about graphics, I would think that the better processor and vid card you can get, with lots of ram, you should be able to do pretty much anything. Games take computing power, as do graphics from my understanding, so i would think the higher end rig you can get, the better off you will be.

I'm trying to send about 1.5m total of multiple files to four win98 pc's from a win98 pc on a home network without domain through open c-drive shares. The sending pc starts to send the files and then errors out with an illegal operation. If I unmap one of the pc's and then send the batch again, it works no problem. It doesn't matter which one of the four pc's I unmap, the process works. But four is too much for it. Can't figure it out. Someone had mentioned MTU, but I'm not sure where to find that setting or if that is even an option really. Anyone shed some light on this problem or point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Answer:Batching to 4 pc's from one machine crashing machine

I don't think your MTU settings are your problem. Highly doubtful. However, I don't really understand how you are sending the files. Are you batching to them all at one time or are you sending the files to mapped drive A first, then waiting for it to finish and then sending it to drive B, then waiting for it to finish and then sending it to drive C and then the 4th one after that?

What does your batch file look like? I know it is most likely irrelevant, but might be worth posting.
