Preferred Solution: internet explorer not working but other browsers are working just fine

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having issues with my web browser that I hope someone can help me with. When I open IE or Firefox, it takes an EXTREMELY long time to open a webpage (about an hour).

When I open a web browser in IE, it hangs at "connecting" for about 20-25 minutes. It then moves to "waiting for http://(whateverwebsite)" for another 20-25 minutes. Then it displays the website, but hangs for another 15-20 minutes. When I open a webpage in Firefox, nothing happens at all.

I know there is nothing wrong with my Internet connection because I can still download updates at a normal speed and I have a couple of online games I can still play normally. I can also still access the Internet fine on other computers (hence this posting). The only issue is with the web browser is on my laptop.

My web browsers were working fine last night and the only change I have made was downloading McAfee. I contacted McAfee and of course they said this is not caused by their software. I conducted a virus scan with McAfee and PCTools and everything is normal.

One thing I just noticed is if I open a web browser and disconnect the Internet connection, the web browser will still go through the steps I listed in the second paragraph and display the webpage an hour later. So the webpage is still being downloaded at a normal speed, it just takes forever to be displayed.

I have already tried restarting both my computer and modem. I have also conducted the following that was posted by JohnWill:

Hello everyone.

Currently, I live in a college apartment that has internet for the building. Not that many people are here, so I figured it would be okay. Here is a speedtest:

As you can see, it should be decent. It IS decent when I'm browsing the internet..facebook, email, youtube, etc.

It is also fine when I am downloading files.

But when I play games in Steam, it is very slow. When I search for servers, the pings are all 1000+. When I join a game, my ping is 500-600 and it's unplayable cause of how jumpy and choppy I am.

The thing about this is that when I download steam updates/files, it downloads at regular speeds!

How can I fix this? What settings do I look at? I've heard of port forwarding and things like that, but I am not sure exactly what to do.

One huge detail: This very same internet used to run the game fine, as well as World of Warcraft (I haven't tested that game with the internet now since I quit a while back), but there was a huge power out, power went out for 5 days, and now it's running slow.

So anyway, any help would be appreciated. Basically, why are games running super slow when everything else is pretty good?

Answer:Internet working fine in browsers, but in Steam games? Slow

I'm not really sure where to post this, please move if needed.

My internet connection is fine, programs such as MSN work, but when I go to either Internet Explorer it displays the 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' notice on every page that I try to connect to, also displays a 'Page loading error' notice on every page that I try to visit.

The problem appeared to start when I installed an update for Firefox, and at the time I had an old version of IE which worked fine, although the updated Firefox did not display any pages, I decided to update to IE8, because the version I had installed was pretty ancient, after which IE also began to display this problem.

I have fiddled with my firewall settings, to no avail.

Incidentally I am now using an old version of MSN explorer, which works to display webpages (which is how I am managing to post this!) I am guessing it is something to do with the updates, although I'm not an expert.

Any clues as to what I can do to fix it (I don't want to be stuck with this awful MSN browser!)

Thanks in advance

Answer:Internet connection working fine, browsers can't connect to any sites.

Try opening a command window (type cmd into yor run box and click ok)
Then type 'netsh winsock reset' and hit enter.
You should get a message 'successfully reset winsock catalogue' or similar.
then restart your computer

do you have a firewall installed on your system? If yes, try temporarily disabling it to see if that enables webpages to load in IE and FF.

I have windows 7 on a laptop that I am currently experiencing a lot of problems with. I was away for about 10 months and when I get home and use laptop to go online the browsers (chrome, ie, opera) all say that I'm not connected to internet. I pulled up a DOS prompt and am able to ping by both IP address and domain name. I try to open windows explorer and see it's icon pop up on the task bar but the application never appears/becomes accessible. I don't seem to be able to use dvd drive or flash drives either. I would like to format my HD and reinstall windows but

1. there are some files I need to back up
2. the OS was pre-installed so i don't have a win 7 disk

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Have internet but browsers don't work. Windows Explorer not working

Try windows explorer and flash drives in Safe Mode (hit F8). If it works, back up your files first thing. And if it works, you should be able to repair the install.

You can also go to Repair Your Computer at boot and try system restore or last good configuration.

To Reset to factory, you should be able to access the Restore Partition. How to do that varies among makers.

I mainly use Google Chrome as my internet browser and about a week ago it started acting up. It would get stuck on a page or would repeatedly send me back to my homepage. I was able to use Skype, Ventrillo, World of Warcraft, etc. My AVG wasn't catching any problems, but the problem was happening. I would restart the computer and the browser would work fine for a little while, then stop.

Following CNET's advise, I installed CCleaner and Malware Software and ran them. No problems detected.

Browser problem has gotten worse!

I found a similar forum here. Browsers not working, internet connection is fine And tried everything that was suggested to that user, but still no luck with my computer.

I spent an hour+ with AVG Tech Support trying to resolve the issue to no prevail. Please help me!!!

Answer:Browsers Not Working - Internet Connection Fine - Tried "Everything"

Given that a reboot seems to at least temporarily fix the problem and you can connect with other protocols Im leaning towards network or AVG

What were the results when you cleared you cache (suggested in the other thread)?

Have you tried another browser to confirm/deny it is Chrome?

Have you tried with AVG disabled?

Have you tried it in safe mode (F8) with networking?

I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit on my laptop. Basically internet explorer starts up then closes with a cursos spinning the whole time. Its just a blank page and then it closes. I tried uninstalling from windows features and even running the IE install from even trying the reset settings. Nothing has worked. I installed firefox and chrome and no webpages are showing up.My laptop is wirelessly connected to the internet and I've ran ping with everything working well. But none of the browsers will bring up a webpage. I've also tried to reset winsock.

Answer:Internet explorer not working. Other browsers not connecting to internet.

Open a command prompt and type in the following command:

nslookup google.comClick to expand...

It should respond with some ip addresses. If it doesn't, then something is wrong with DNS name resolving.

Presumably you didn't make a full backup image of the computer when everything was freshly installed and fully working?

Perhaps you have left system restore turned on though? That might enable you to go back to a point before these problems struck... certainly worth a try...

Hi folks,

I am hoping that one of you whizz kids can help me. For a few weeks now, IE7 only works around 50% of the time. When it stops working it attempts to connect to internet sites but nothing happens. It acts as if there is no internet connection at all. It is the same for all internet sites. I can try it again 10 minutes later (without re-booting the PC) and it will work fine again for a while.

My internet connection is 100% stable and other browsers such as Opera work fine, even when IE7 stops working.

I tried uninstalling SP3, SP2 and IE7 and reinstalling them all but it made no difference. I am currently running XP SP3. I tried posting in the virus/malware section of this site but the experts can see no evidence of any malware or trojans etc. My system appears clean.

Do any of you have any ideas why this is happening? It happens maybe 10 times per day on average and is very annoying.

Answer:IE7 not working. Other browsers work fine.

By the way, here is a screenshot of IE7 when it is trying to access Google.

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

I decided to run hijack this and found two BHO's. It's funny that on my new install that I used a handful of times, I have adware, but on this install that's been going for years, I have nothing. Oh well. So I had "Crossrider" and "Coupon Companion". I removed all traces of both, yet still no go. It looks like this managed to install itself on 12/2... which had to be damn close to the date that I bought the SSD, however, I had internet activity as recent as 12/26. Hi, I'm glad to be in this forum

Well, the problem is I was using an .exe that surely was malware.

I use Comodo Firewall and I blocked the access to that file, so when I tried to open it, it didn't let me, so I don't know why I gave it admin rights and opened it. It seemed to work fine, but when I rebooted my PC, I couldn't open anything via explorer.exe, i got this error messages

When I boot in safe mode everything's fine.

RPC service is running, according to services.msc

Right now I'm canning my system for viruses, will post the results when done.

Answer:Win Explorer isn't working fine, probably due to RPC errors or malware

RPC Server Unavailable - read this
How to Fix RPC Error When the RPC Server is Unavailable - or this
even though these seem like older articles, I believe that they may be relevant.

These may provide a possible fix or at least give some insight into it. Might try uninstalling Comodo and rebooting then see if problem remains. Let me know what happens, so I can help you further if necessary

Also, when I try to update Spybot, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes they fail, saying that updates cannot be downloaded. I was able to run and update in Safe mode with network to get the updates and run Spybot, Symantec Antivirus, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes, and Windows:, but no issues were found and the when I reboot in Normal mode, the same problem exists.

Next, I ran SDfix in safe mode and have attached in this note, but also, the same problems exist (see attached: Report.txt)

Basically, I had my Zoom router in my office (That's what we call it), and we all decided to move the computer into my room, along with the router.

Now, when I plug in the phone cord (ADSL), into the wall, the link (or internet establishment), keeps blinking, when it shouldn't, saying that it cannot establish a connection.

Both phone cords have the same number, and everything.. and it just wont establish connection, and I don't have anything wireless, and the room is around 50 ft away, so I can't get online at all anymore..

Okay, so I had my friend download a torrent program (uTorrent). And shortly after, as he was downloading a file, his internet stopped working.

I don't know too much on the situation, but appearently it says his connection to the internet is "Excellent," and yet, when he tries to use his internet browser (Either IE or Netscape) it just loads for a minute and eventually says "Web Page Not Found" or whatever the common error is.

Hi There!

I'm not terribly technical so please bear with me. I really hope someone can help as this is driving me nuts...

I'm running Windows 7 on an HP PC wired directly into the Internet. Everything has been fine (more or less) since I bought it a year ago, but yesterday - for no obvious reason as far as I could tell - my main browser (Chrome) stopped working. I tried Firefox and IE, but they wouldn't work either.

Then I saw the Internet was still accessible - iTunes was working, Skype was working, and so on. It was just browsers. I tried reinstalling Chrome and Firefox - nothing. Using my laptop for the initial download, I installed Safari for Windows and - much to my amazement - it worked, but to go over to that permanently seems like a plaster over a major wound. And in any case, there is obviously something very wrong (although probably not terribly serious - I hope!)

Last night and this morning, I've been hunting high and low for a solution to no avail. There are threads on this site (mostly several years old and closed) too, and I think I've now tried every possibility mentioned there.

If I start up in safemode with networking, it's fine.

The only anti-virus product I had was Norton (sorry!) which I've uninstalled. I ran the removal tool twice to make sure.

I've just started work again after the summer holiday and need this machine for my job. If I take it back to the place I bought it, I can wave goodbye to it for sev... Read more

I have no idea what the difference is...

As mentioned in the title, my internet is working fine. spent some time onthe phone with my service provider and he said everything is fine and suggested i plug into another computer and sure enough it works without issue. So everything using wifi works but my desktop will not connect with the ethernet cable.
I just get issues saying problems with dns server.

Attached is the ipconfig /all as it seems to be the first thing asked for from other post i have been reading through.
any help would be greatly appreciated as i would rather not go to the extreme of reformatting.

Hi all, first post here, I am simply stumped.

This issue is on my girlfriend's desktop PC. She's running XP, but I'm not sure which version.

- It connects to the Internet via EVDO Aircard. That connection is fine, rock solid (actually much better than my laptop with the same model aircard!)

- We have the Nintendo USB WiFi adaptor connected to another USB port, to share the established Internet connection with our Wii.

The problem is this:
The USB WiFi adaptor is stuck in Acquiring Network Address mode, after running just fine for a couple months!
- I have tried ipconfig/release and renew, I have tried going into the device manager and uninstalling/reinstalling that one thing.
- when I run ipconfig alone, the internet connection comes up with a normal result, but "Local Area Connection 4" (now 5 after the reinstall) comes up with all zeroes.
- when I try to "repair" the connection it gives me an error, I believe it says it cannot get an IP address. But I'm not looking for it to get an IP address - the Wii has a MAC address, and I would think the Nintendo servers would have given it an IP if it needed one, no?

I'm not a power user here, and all the solutions I've found in my search so far, I've either already tried or are over my head.

Anyone out there?

I have a new DELL XPS M2010 that I want to connect using wireless card. OS - Vista, Linksys Router, when I try to "Diagnose and Repair" I get the response "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server".

It's showing an Excellent connection to the route, but will not connect to the Internet. I've tried a few things, such as connecting to other unsecured wireless internet connections and I was able to connect to the Internet then. I also looked at another thread on this site that suggested to add a DNS Server to the list of and nothing happened with that.

Other PCs in the house, all on wireless, connect fine (obviously including the laptop I'm posting on right now). Still searching the forums for similar solutions - here is my ipconfig information:

Firefox won't connect to the internet or load any of the pages. The internet connection is fine. IE is working, though it does get a bit slow sometimes and I can't seem to download anything.
I've checked:
1.)Anti-Virus software - no threats found
2.)Firefox Setting: It's directly connected to the internet; no manual proxy setting.
3.)Firewall is not blocking Firefox
Any ideas what might be the problem?

Hi guys I could use anyone's help. The problem is with my desktop pc. I connected it to the modem using a new ethernet cable but I can't access the net. To test the cable, I plugged it to another pc and I got no problem connecting to the net. When I borrowed another cable from a friend and tried it on my desktop, it connected directly to the net. Which means that there is no problem with either the cable that I bought and the NIC of my pc.

The message that I get when I use the cable that I bought on my pc is "Unidentified Network". Can anybody help me out with this?

Answer:No Internet connection even if cable and NIC is working fine

You should tell Windows firewall that's your new home network. I don't see why a new cable would make your computer think that your old internet connection was something new.

Hi Guys,
I spent a couple of days on different forums online to fix this issue I have.
My issue is at work. I am not really IT expert but apparently I am the only one who knows a little bit about computers.
So, we have different computers (desktop PC with windows 8.1) and they are all connected with ethernet cable to s switchboard itself connected to our building/office internet.
They are all working fine with access to internet and network. One of them started to not have access anymore to internet.
I can ping the printer also connected to the network but I can't ping any other computers from the network.
The ip address config and DNS are all set up in automatic. I tried to connect another computer to the same socket in the wall and it is still working so the issue is not coming to the switchboard but to the Desktop Config iteslf.
The ip addres automatically configured is completely different from the other ones on the network and when I try to change it manually with the right default gateway, DNS, Subnet is still does not access internet.
I have noticed that the McAfee antivirus is expired and I thought either the firewall or this fact could be an issue but some of the other computers do have the same McAfee system with sometimes firewall on sometimes not and sometimes expired as well but they still have access to internet.
So, yeah I am a bit lost here and I am not sure what the problem could be as it is a new computer and it was working fine until two days ag... Read more

Try this, I copied it from another site

Repair Internet Explorer
It is possible that Internet Explorer has somehow become corrupted. Internet explorer and Outlook express are inextricably linked together. To repair Internet Explorer, open the Control Panel and double click Add/Remove programs. Scroll down the list to find Microsoft Internet Explorer (x) and Internet Tools. Click the Remove button. Select Repair Internet Explorer from the resulting dialog box and click OK. A few seconds will pass and your computer will reboot. Hopefully, this will cure your problem

I had a problem with my internet explorer and mozilla. When I click the mozilla or internet explorer, it "timed out" and page is just blank. In other words, I could not go into any website, through my internet explorer and/ or mozilla firefox. When I troubleshoot it, a message told me that there is a connection but it does not respond to it. I prove this right because I can still use the google-talk and skype- they are connected and work just fine. Probably because they (google talk and skype) have separated icons. So definitely something makes my mozilla and internet explorer not to work. I have also tried to play around with my computer's firewall, but still not working.

My laptop's operating system is Window 7.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:internet browsers not working

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

I don't really know what did I do but I guess it had something to do with my java updating itself last night.
After that, my internet browser is not working anymore.
I have 4 different browsers on my computer - Firefox, Chrome, Safari and IE.

Firefox, Chrome and Safari totally cannot LOAD any page.
The funny thing is that the only page I can go is Google and that's it.
And I'm sure my internet is up cause I have no problem with my wireless using my iPhone.

However, weirdly, my IE is still normal and I'm using my IE to post this topic.
But my IE crashes very often and this have not happened before this.
However, whenever I tried to open other browsers (Firefox used to be my default), my IE wil not load anymore.
Only after I close my Firefox, my IE will load again. Funny right?

What's happening to my internet browsers huh?
I tried reinstall and uninstall but it is still not working.

On my laptop, (Using the same router as the desktop I'm on now,) my internet won't work. Only partially though. Non-browser programs, such as IM and Online Games, still work, but internet browsing itself won't. Firefox and Internet Explorer gave me weird messages, and I'm unable to do anything about it.

(Also, I no longer have Firefox because my anti-virus detected some virus-cookies in the file, so I just uninstalled Firefox temporarily.)

I have this weird problem at my house. Sometimes, the internet will be working but will kind of go down at the same time. For example, I know I have an internet connection because I can be playing an online game, and be talking on Ventrilo too. But my internet browsers won't work, kind of. It can't connect to any website, except for the ones I have already been to that day. Like if I had visited earlier that day, then that site would load, and I would be able to fully explore all branches of the site and stuff. But other sites won't work.
The rest of my family's computers won't connect to websites either, except, I'm assuming, ones they've already been to that day or however it works.
We use Charter, and I guess the exact makes and stuff of our computers are unecessary since it happens to all of us.
It's just so weird, because I have internet connection for sure, but browsers won't work except on sites I had recently visited.
Any explanation?

Answer:Internet working, but browsers not

Well, since multiple computers do it, I'd suspect it to be the router, modem, or your ISP.

What is the exact make/model of the router and the modem?
Some things you can try here.
For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.
Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

I'm so upset I could scream.

I just got a new computer a couple of months ago. It has Windows 8 on it. I'm not sure if it is Windows 8 fault or the computers or my internet settings.

I used to always use firefox. But on this computer, firefox won't load the pages. For instance, facebook wont always load all of the way. I have to reload it 5 times and only sometimes it works. So, I've been using google crome, which sometimes doesn't load right either and I have to reload 2 or more times. There is something very very wrong with google crome. I keep getting popups. I mean, I have popup blocker...and there is always a little floater ad that pops up on the side and on the bottom of the page. When I X it out, it pulls up a new web page. When I tell it not to allow third party stuff, it signs me out of all of my accounts (like facebook and email) and won't let me stay signed in for more then 2 seconds. It's getting really frustrating. I hate hate hate windows 8 and the web browsers on this aren't working right. I wish my old computer had not given out after 8 years.

What is wrong with this thing? Can I block all ads on google crome without not letting me use any accounts? Why won't my pages load?

I am, as you can tell by the title, experiencing some internet issues with my web browsers.
Here's the deal: Every program that uses internet works just fine, though there might be a slight delay connecting at first, but they're working (ex. Skype, Origin, Windows Mail App). However, the browsers are barely loading any pages or not loading at all. If I'm lucky it will load but it takes such a long time! But most of the times it just gives up. I dunno wtf is wrong. I can chat with my friends on skype, talk and play online games samontainously but i can't load up fricking Facebook? Waaat.
Also, all my other internet devices are working smoothly, downloaded a file a day ago on my ipad, which I'm using to write this on, at 1.5mb/s no probs at all. So I am really lost what the problem might be. Here's what I've tried that ppl told on other forums that hasn't worked:

-Restarting PC, seems to work for around 20-30mins but then the shit is back suddenly and nothing loads...
Scanning for malware using both Spybot and Malwarebytes (Full scan) Nothing found
Scanning for viruses using F-Secure internet security, none found
Running CHKDSK in command prompt, no problems found
Running ipconfig /renew, no change
Running ipconfig /flushdns, no change
Running netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt, seemed to solve it but only for 30mins or so, prolly coz of the restart

I have a Dell machine with XP windows loaded. I connect to internet via AOL version 9 and I have IE8 installed. Suddenly I am unable to start up either my AOL browser properly or IE8. I have reinstalled XP, IE8 and run virus scans but nothing indicates a problem. When I start up AOL browser the browser opens but it does not display website although at the bottom it says website found, connecting. Sometimes the screen will just disappear. When I try IE8 it connects to the website for about 5 seconds before I get the standard "Internet explorer has encountered a problem and has to close" My event view shows "faulting application error ieexplorer.exe version 8". Not sure what to do next as I have tried reinstalling everything and tried the non ads in IE without any success and tried the reset option too.
Any suggestions? thanks

Hi, my PC just recovered form a BSOD, finally, and now the internet is not working . I am connected to my wireless network, I can browse the shared folders, download from bittorrent but my browsers dont work!!! I have Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox :grinthumb and Chrome but all don't work. I have tried the TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

This didn't help either. Internet works fine on all my other machines. I must also add that after I recovered from BSOD my internet was not working at all and I had an svchost error. Windows would detect my network but wouldn't go any further than aqquiring an ip address. After I managed to fix that and now this happens, partial internet :dead:. Please help me.

I am running Windows XP with service pack 3.

(How did I fix the svchost error, well I tried my things so don't know what worked )

As for Antivirus and Firewalls, well I have unistalled Avast using the control panel and using the completely uninstall utilty thing
I did have Zonealarm and Norton installed a long long time ago so could it be that their settings may have resurfaced or something?? I have can however confirm that I have disabled the Windows Firewall.

The internet works on everything except the web browsers on my computer. I have tried IE6/7, firefox, chrome, and opera. I've checked the windows firewall and even tried turning it off. I've ran multiple virus/malware scans to no avail. The browsers work in safe mode, but refuse to work normally. I've tried system restore as well and that hasn't worked either. It's not in offline mode and I've checked all the browser settings and they all seem normal. What else can I check?

See if you can ping a website.

At the command prompt type ping

I am running Windows XP SP3. Recently downloaded MS Office 2007. Soon after that, neither of my web browsers (IE 7 and firefox) would connect. No issue with internet connection - Outlook Express works fine, I can ping websites and a separate laptop can connect using both browsers via the wireless router connected to the desktop's modem. Am using the laptop now for this post.

Following a ms support post, I deleted IE 7 (and firefox) and the desktop IE is now V6. It still wn't connect.

I run AVG Free. At about the same time as the browser issue, on stertup there is the message that "avgnsx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". Only way i can get rid of the message is to exit AVG. Also AVG will not update (I guess because there is no internet connection).

Have no idea if any of these are related, but have got to the end of my limited technical ability. Any and all help appreciated. Thanks.

Well, currently I'm using a different computer, but my Windows 7 computer can't run either Firefox or Internet Explorer, both are up to date, but do not work. When I try to run them, the window doesn't open or, it opens for about three seconds before closing. Occasionally I'll get an error saying "Firefox has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working." I've already reinstalled both Internet Explorer and Firefox, but they still do not work. All other programs on my computer run fine, just not the browsers. I've done a full computer scan with my anti-virus software a couple times without finding anything. Not sure if there's anything I can really do at this point.

Answer:Internet Browsers not working

That's unusual.
Does it do this in Safe Mode?

Any suggestions? thanks

Answer:Internet Browsers not working

Reboot in safe mode by tapping F8 when you see the Dell logo splash screen. Select Safe Mode With Networking, login as you normally do then try to open Internet Explorer see if it crashes.

A little bit ago, i had to uninstall zonealarm so that i could install kaspersky anti-virus to get rid of a few nasty bugs. i didnt want anything coming into my computer so i took out the ethernet cable. after removing lots of viruses, i put the ethernet cable back in and the local area connection said there was "Limited or no connectivity." so, i did all the routine stuff, unplug the modem and plug it back in, check to see if the driver was working properly, ect... however it still said limited or no connectivity. i called up my internet provider and they gave me an ip adress to manually enter under network connnections, since it was not getting one automatically. now the internet was working fine, that is: everything said it was connected and working properly but when i clicked on my browser it still would not work. then i went into run: cmd to see what was up, and a bunch of error messages came up, somthing about an illegal operation.
After a couple days of trying stuff, i did run:cmd again just for the hell of it and it works fine now.

so, my computer works absolutly fine, but i still cannot connect to the internet, even though the internet is connected. any help you can give is greatly appreciated for I am at a complete and utter lost.

Answer:Internet is working fine, but my computer still wont go online, what is going on?

When you go into Network Connections in the control Panlel, are there any unidentified connections to an IP address that is not your own? If so delete them. I would try another browser like Mozilla Firefox and see if that works. Viruses love to attack anything Microsoft related and the viruses could have destroyed the connection setting for Internet Explorer. Try Firefox and see if that works. Also make sure nothing elso is running, like Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm.

I am running a pretty new PC with Windows 7. This weekend I updated Itunes to the latest version, and did a restart. After the restart, I was unable to connect to any website, using IE or Chrome. I was also unable to update anything (like my malware software definitions). However, my Internet connection is just fine. Under network connections everything looks good, and I am able to connect to an online chess server and play chess games, so I know there's no issue with my connection.

Now, I run my malware program and it finds and fixes 7 issues. I assume this must be what's causing the problem. After another restart, a second malware scan comes up clean, same with my virus software. However, still unable to connect to anything online other than the chess server.

Finally, I pull an older computer out of the basement, disconnect the cat 5 going to the new computer, and connect it up to my older computer. I was surprised to get the very same issue -- I was unable to connect to any website, but the Internet connection is fine. So, I have to assume that the malware was never the issue, unless it possibly reset some settings with my router or modem? The old and the new computer were never connected in any way, so it's not possible that the malware infected the old computer.

Any suggestions? I have been struggling with this for a couple of days now and really could use some help. Thanks!

Answer:I can't visit any website, even though my Internet connection is working fine.

My Name is Kaushal and I work for social media and community Team at Dell.
It seems like it's a connectivity issue with the computer.
1: Try to turn off the modem for 30 sec and disconnect the Ethernet cable from computer and restart, once the commuter starts you have the desktop window up and turn on the internet modem and once all the lite on the modem gets stable, after that please check the internet.

2: The best option would be to restart your computer and TAP F8 and it will take to black windows where in , You can select "safe mode with networking".
Once the computer starts then check the internet connection and if it works fine it means it could be something in the computer which is blocking the internet. Like an Anti Virus like MacAfee, Norton, Avast

3:If these 2 doesn’t solve the problem as you mentioned you tried the second computer, it Also doesn’t work in that case please get in touch with your internet service provider.
You will surely have the solution

Hi there...thanks in advance for anyone's help/suggestions.

Background: I have an HP laptop, running Windows XP and IE 7, and use a wireless router. I recently had issues with the Vundo virus. I followed the forums here in MajorGeeks and no longer have any issues (at least I don't think so since the _helper.dll files are no longer popping up, and the virus scans come out clean).

Problem: When I'm using this laptop, and open IE, the internet connection is strong and fast for about 5 or 10 minutes. After that, the connection is completely out, although the wireless router icon suggests the connection strength is "excellent."

My other laptop (running Vista) works just fine during all of this, with no connection disruptions (so I know it's not the router, or Comcast causing the problem).

What I've tried: I installed the new beta IE 8, thinking perhaps that might fix something. It did not. Tonight, I will reinstall the network card drivers to see if that helps.

I'd love anyone's thoughts on why the internet connection is going out on me. It is not until I restart the computer that I can browse the web (and ony for a short amount of time). Could it be that I still have virus issues?? If so, any suggestions?

I cannot access the internet through EI or Firefox on our home computer that is running Vista.Ofcourse my laptop running XP works fine. I have tried a number of fixes from different forums and so far nothing has worked. I'm working off the same wireless network for both, I have had the Vista computer for about a year, and the internet as worked relatively well until about two days ago. The problem existed before I installed SP1 and has persisted after the install.

Can somone work with me on this to figure out what the problem is? Thanks.

Answer:Internet quit working w/ Vista OS works fine w/ XP OS

Hi everyone, for some reason I can access the internet on my Windows XP with my other user names no problem, but not with the main one I use anymore. I had a virus penetrate my computer (one of those fake antivirus), so I logged in Safe Mode as Administrator and ran Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyWare. It finally got rid of the anoying messages, but now I can't connect to the internet. But why is it that I can access the internet with another user on the same computer but not with the main one I use all the time? I even created a new user and it works, but that's not the point, I need to fix my user where I have all my settings.

I have tried: to clear out history, the "netsh winsock reset" command and restarting, windows firewall is off but my ESET is on, I can't run updates because of the internet but its up to date... I find this very weird... please can someone help me, I have been trying for 6.5 hours and nothing :-( believe me, I have looked all around, and I am a pretty technical guy... but this one got me!

Thank you for providing such great help with this forum

I am getting the following errors on 2 browsers but not sure if this has anything to do with it!

On IE 8: ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm

Answer:My internet is not working on 1 user but the rest are fine...weird!!

Not sure if it will help but Ihave seen something similar before.
Try going to internet options, connection tab, lan settings and make sure its set to auto detect settings

My internet browsers have stopped working there seems to be an epidemic of this problem going around. Here's what my computer has done and is doing specificly.

First off I use windows vista
I was having problems connecting to EQ2 so under the advice of one of SOE's tech guys I restarted my router, that fixed that problem but then a couple hours later my browser (netscape) stopped working. I had no problem connecting to EQ2 at this time. I asked a friend about the problem and he said I should ipconfig/flushdns and I did, that fixed the problem, but it came back after an hour or so, I tried it again and it didn't fix it. Based on my friends recommendation I got the new IE and installed that to use as a new browser. The problem persists. On a whim I restarted my router again and it fixed the problem for a few hours but then it went back to what it was before. I tested it after I reset the router by randomly browsing youtube for six hours and everything was fine but as soon as I started looking through a gallery site it stopped working.

Now the only thing that fixes the problem is restarting my computer. It seems to only conk out after I've loaded up a bunch of pages like from gallaries, wiki and the like.

Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appriciated, if you need any more info let me know and I'll provide it.

I have had a problem for the past few days and it is that my browser and some Windows 10 applications are not able to connect to the internet. For example: I am able to use Skype without a single problem, but the Windows Store and installations fail regularly. As for the browsers, I am having problems when connecting to most websites. I can almost always connect to Google, but not to other websites (like this one). Sometimes, for a few seconds or minutes, the internet works for everything in the computer.
I decided to reset Windows to see if that solved the problem but I got caught in an infinite restart loop so I clean installed Windows 10 and I still have the same problem. I also took my computer to change its CMOS battery about a week ago.

I am running an Alienware M17x R4 with Windows 10 and all the drivers say that they are updated.

Thank you so much in advance!

I have an HP laptop that the browsers have stopped working (going on 2 weeks now). The computer is connected to the internet & in firefox or IE, I am able to open google and do SOME searches, but pages that require login do not load. Even just the searches that work take forever to load. Its not our internet connection because other laptops work just fine. At the beginning of June I had my laptop fixed by a tech guy bc it had viruses & he resolved all the issues & installed Norton on my PC.

Also, I'm not sure if this is correlated - but any downloads (whether via internet or even disk) take hours & hours. I was trying to install my printer CD to the computer and after 4 hours of it trying to download I gave up.

As the topic says I have some sort of virus (I assume), the main symptoms are that my search browsers (I have been using firefox, google chrome and IE) often dont work. They will not load new pages and then I end up just switching between the three trying to get one that works. This has become very frustrating so I decided to try and do something about it. I have noticed that when I can get a browser working it is often extremely slow. This was a drastic change as about a week ago I had no issues then all of a sudden it seems like it is almost not working at all. I have had one instance were I was redirected to a page telling my computer was infected but other than that there have been no pop ups or other instances of redirection. I have also had some issues with computer running slow and requiring a restart but the main issue is with my internet browsers. I am running a 64 bit windows 7 version so I did not do the rootkit section of the guide posted on these forums.

Hopefully someone can make sense of this and give me some advice and how to manage this as I need my computer for university studies. Any help is much appreciated.

OK I originally posted here, but was sent over to Viruses/Malware, and now I've been sent back. SweetTech spent some time looking through my problem, and is now thinking this is an internet issue and not malware related. So he sent me here (I've been malware cleared).

Bottom line is, I can get on my local internet (file server), and ping computers in my local network (other buildings, across town), but I cannot ping google or CNN, and cannot get to the web with Firefox, IE, and Thunderbird isn't working either. I am not running a proxy server, at least as noted by my LAN settings in internet options, or in Firefox options.

the whole thread is here:

I will post the last post I sent to him regarding the internet issues, which was posted in response to him requesting I run a google ping script. here is SweetTech's request, followed by my response:

I will be offline next few days, but I'm sure someone will pick this up.

What stuff did you download; I'm assuming MS updates and what not? If you could perform the following tests, it would definitely help us out here.

I tried running the malware check program and it only detected 1 thing. I removed it then restarted my computer but the browsers were still not working. I am experiencing a bit of a weird problem.

Problem Description:
After an undetermined amount of time the internet browsers, and various other internet applications, cease to work. If I attempt to run PUTTY, when I make an attempt to connect I get an error related to a Buffer Overflow. I am, however, able to successfully PING destinations during this state. To temporarily resolve the problems all I need to do is Log Off and Log back on and everything works again for a while (a few hours). I ran Adaware, and SpyBot Search and Destroy, then booted up in Safe Mode (with System Restore OFF) and did a complete scan with Norton AntiVirus. Found a few things, but nothing too major. This seemed to make things better for a while, but then it started happening again.

System Details:
Toshiba P35-S611 running WinXP. As far as I know, OS is up to date with all updates. The Internet Borwsers I use are IE6 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4.

Any help very appreciated as I cannot fathom the reason for this weird behavior.

Attached is a HiJackThis Log.

Disabled firewall too and no luck.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

I have 2 PCs at home, 1 desktop, 1 laptop both running XP SP2, and both hardwired to a DSL router. Last night, all was well, both machines working ok. This morning both machine have the same problem; IE and FF are unable to connect to the internet. Same goes for my smartphone; it can connect to the WiFi network but is unable to browse internet. Funny thing is, I have a stand alone IPphone connected to the same router and it works fine. Both PCs can run Torrent client, I see traffic on "peerblock" but google or hotmail just won't show up either with FF or IE

I've covered all the basics:
-yeeeeessss i've checked that all my cables are connected properly and that the modem is turned on
-yeeeeessss I've checked that the pretty lights on the router confirm the presence of "DSL" and "Internet"
-I've rebooted and reset the modem/router
-I've turned off all firewalls (router and PCs), proxies and anti-virus then rebooted.
-I ran antimalwarebytes on both machines with, cleaned and rebooted.
-I stopped my bittorrent clients
-Did a system restore to a couple of weeks ago.

no result

Both machines show "connected to local network" with packets moving about, both machines can "see" each other's shared folders on local network, and both can access without any problem...

But the main reason I strongly doubt it's linked to my PCs it that both IE and FF actually DO work when I ... Read more

Hello. The problem could be either in the hardware or the software, so you need to test each. Perform the tests below -- it doesn't matter which one you do first.

To test the speakers, perform the Quick Audio Check in the ePSA test. If the speakers fail the test then they have failed or become disconnected. (Click the link for instructions on how to run the test.)

To test the software, switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. [This test assumes that your laptop has the Realtek audio driver. If you get to step 2 and do not see "Realtek High Definition Audio" then go to the Dell support page for your model and download the Realtek driver that Dell provides for the version of Windows that the laptop is running.]
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted,... Read more

im running an 8 month old toshiba with vista and realtek audio with updated drivers. surround sound speakers bought in iraq were used on audio output for about a week... then the speakers started acting funny, like with one speaker and one headphone working when headphones were plugged in. then the internal speakers squealed loudly whenever the computer was powered. had to take the speakers out just to get them to stop, and now audio output does not work at all. computer tests both devices as working properly, and drivers are updated.

Hi, My name is Christopher Nam.
I have been using Comcast net for a while now, I think about 2-3 years. At first we paid for the wireless ver. Giving us a wireless router allowing 3 comps to access roaming and 1 via ethernet. But we started having problems where internet would just suddenly cut off or not work, sometimes it would sometimes it wouldn't randomly and the only one that really worked was via ethernet. Comcast kept saying it was our labtops not func. correctly or w/e which is total b.s. because they hook up fine wireless at cafe's, library, etc. So we got fed up and brought a tech over to check it out which he said it was fine, but i think he was just trying to get out fast. He recommended we switch to a reg. modem and buy a wireless router. So we did. Now we have a reg modem (comcast) its a motorola brand. And i bought a wireless router. Netgear wireless N-router. From there we should not of had problems of any sort. (plz dont give me crap about "well your always going to run into some kind of problem, yeah i know") Sry, but on-call techs are incredibly annoying, those of you who have had your share know what i mean. Telling you things like their reading it off some paper.
Anyways, point is Im using a reg. modem from comcast with a wireless N-router Netgear and all machines from comp to router to modem are all saying connected, working correctly, connection established, etc. But no internet. It would be really random, like 30% of time interne... Read more

So it just happens 100% random out of no where and I get this error:

(note i ripped this image off google but this is the exact thing that happens)
so I found TWO temporary fixes.

One: unplug router / modem for 10 sec and replug

Two: Go to the network settings and disable the ethernet (note I am connected via ethernet cable, 100% wired)
disable it

Enable it BUT i have to enable it about 30 times before it enables.

When it's enabling, it doesn't enable, it shows the message that it's enabling and I refresh the background and it's still disabled. I have to keep enabling until it randomly works (if anyone knows why I have to keep enabling it 30 times for it to actually enable please let me know)
why does my internet randomly stop on my PC? it works fine on other devices while its not working on my PC and it takes forever to enable the ethernet after i disable it.

I recently moved, before the move my computer worked fine, browsers were quick to connect to websites, etc. After the move, my computer seems to work just fine, until you open a browser. This issue happens with Chrome/Firefox/IE, when trying to visit websites it takes a couple minutes for them to load, and about 50% of the time the connection times out. However, games such as League of Legends works smooth with no connection errors.

I have tried the following:

1) changing the DNS to Google DNS (didn't help, if anything it made it worse)
2) Factory Reset (no difference after this)
3) network.dns.disablePrefetchf
4) Ipconfig/flushDNS
