IE7 is not displaying website icons

Question: IE7 is not displaying website icons

I'm not sure how this happens, but for some reason IE7 is not displaying the website icons that should appear next to the url, all I am getting is the general windows icon:

next to the websites name. No custom website icons are displayed next to the url, next to the websites in my favorites or in the tabs on the IE toolbar.

I've been searching around for a solution, but I can't seen to find one. Thanks for any help

Preferred Solution: IE7 is not displaying website icons

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: IE7 is not displaying website icons

Download a new version of IE. uninstall your version now, restart your computer, then install the new copy.

After progressively getting worse, Windows Explorer now displays as seen in the screen shot (no icons are displaying). At first I thought it was taking time to build the icons, but it never does. the loading bar stays loading at 90%. The first few times it happened, I thought I was in a folder with a lot of previews to build in it. Okay. But then it never built the previews. Then for a while, it would load previews for a few minutes after the computer restarted, and then stop displaying those previews. Now it's immediate. I have no icons displaying. Well, in some folders it decides to show the generic icon for the file type (i.e. generic picture icon for png files) instead of building previews. And other times I have a folder mixed with files that display a preview and files of the same type that display either no icon or the generic file type icon.

Even the list view does not display file type icons, and changing the icon size doesn't matter.

What could this be?

(I already deleted the "IconCache.db". It did nothing.)

Answer:Preview Icons Not Displaying, Sometimes No Icons Display in Explorer

Welcome to the forums
What is the amount of RAM in your machine ? Are the working properly ? For testing , follow the tutorial RAM - Test with Memtest86+ .

If RAM is working properly, Icon Cache - Rebuild may be tried , but dont expect anything positive. Make it sure that you have turned on the thumbnail preview (Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable).

If still not working, you should opt for a Repair Install .

Sorry if this isnt the correct forum, I'm not really sure where this would really fit-

I'm a student co-op at a company I just started working for this summer. I have this assignment right now where I'm currently working on a website and my goal is to have it displayed on a TV in my office breakroom. It's like a timeline thing of project due dates, stuff like that for everyone to see. My manager didn't have real clear instructions, giving me some freedom in how I want to do things, but I also really don't know how to do the TV implementation part.

My manager suggested to me perhaps displaying the website within a Picture in Picture window in a corner of the TV while the regular CNN feed we have continues playing. But if this isn't possible, just putting it up on the TV would be fine.

I have no experience doing something like this, but one thing I'd like to be able to do is update the website from the computer in my cubicle and have the changes appear on the TV. Perhaps this can be accomplished if the TV can be connected to the office server, and when I update the page and save it on the server, the TV can reload the page automatically with the changes. I really don't know though, any ideas on how to do this would be welcome. I realize using a graphics card with TV-out could turn the TV into another monitor, but the TV is attached to the ceiling, and above a refrigerator. Maybe I could put a laptop on the fridge, bu... Answer:Displaying website on TV

Using a video card with a tv-out connector (RCA plug) you specify the TV as a second monitor so what ever is displayed on the PC/laptop's screen goes out to the TV also. Many video cards today have RCA jack on them. If you want it to update you'll need some code in the webpage to refresh every so often to pick up any changes you've made to the schedule.
So you could run a cable from whichever system your using to display the info (trust me wireless video tranmitter generally suck & need a line of sight) so cable to it or run a laptop on the fridge and just set up remote control or put the webpage on a server that both you & the display pc can access and update that file - then the next refresh interval on the web page the changes will show.

Hello everyone. New user here, really need help with this issue I'm having. At first I thought it was just an issue with Chrome, but then I started using Internet Explorer and am having the same issue. 50% of the time when I load a website, it either won't load at all or will load all messed up with no images and just black text and buttons, usually all stuck to the left side. Also, sometimes the site will load properly except all the images are not loading. This even happens in iTunes when viewing the iTunes store or account page. Any browser is susceptible so I figured it was an issue with a Windows Update. (I just bought this laptop so I didn't have time to update yet) However, even after all windows updates were installed the issue was still present. I have no idea what the problem is. I'm going mad here, please help! Thanks

Good evening guys, for a reason i do not know, a website will not load correctly. I will put a screen shot in this post for you to see. All the text is on the left hand side and the images and links ate not there. I am on firefox 13 but the problem is still there when i try it in safe mode firefox and in a new profile on firefox. I have turned off adblocker. It is also the same on IE and chrome. I have created a new profile in windows 7 but that also does not fix it. The site also works correctly on my iphone and my kids notebooks. I have ran both Malwarebyes and spybot with nothing coming back. I really do not know what else i can do to fix this. The site is 1channel.ch.

Answer:Only one website not displaying correctly

I suggest checking your JavaScript settings in your browsers - this is the sort of display that I would expect with JavaScript disabled.

Enabling and disabling JavaScript in Web browsers

I can't honestly say that I have seen JavaScript disabled across multiple browsers, however I guess it is conceivable that some security software - such as Norton's - turned it off across the board when finding a "Javascript exe" or similar threat.

This is still a long short, very strange behaviour...buy a lotto ticket, your luck may be about to change!

I am trying to access a specific website. I have no problem getting on the site (have to logon with ID & password) but the site is supposed to have an interactive calendar. The calendar does not even appear on my screen. I am using IE11, with Win7.

I also tried installing Firefox and get the same issue.

When I go to the site via a different computer (Win 7 with IE8) it works fine!
Is this a Flash player issue? Java? what else could run this calendar?

Answer:Website not displaying properly

It could be a flash or java issue. Do you have both installed and enabled for IE11? The other issue which is more likely is that the site isn't coded for IE11. Another thing to try is to add it as a trusted site or use compatibility mode. If it works well with another browser I would just use the other browser.

Hi all,

there is one website that does not display properly on one of my laptops. When I say not properly it means that i do not see some of the images, menus and links on the webpage.

On other laptops/desktops the website is displayed perfectly.
All other websites are displayed without any problem on the said laptop. The faulty Laptop runs Windows 7.

Things I have tried so far:
1. Tried different browsers (IE and Chrome). Website does not display properly on both of them.
2. Updated browsers.
3. Reinstalled browsers.
4. Installed latest Windows Updates.
5. Ran Anti Virus and Malware Softwares. Nothing found.
6. Ran CCleaner and deleted all Caches and other stuff that CCleaner finds.

None of these things helped. Can you suggest further troubleshooting methods? How can I pinpoint the problem?

I have free web space on my ISP (madasafish.com)I successfully uploaded it once and needed to update some new info, now when I've tried looking at my site on my & another computer it shows 'no authourised access' etc error 403.My home page is correctly named 'index.html' Madasafish say it's on there server but I can't retrieve it. I've clicked on 'properties' to display the source of the code and it's the same on both computers res://c\\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/http_403.htm#click here How can this be? I thought that this 'property' would only show on my computer? I'm at a loss. It's obvious that the path needs amending but how? I can't find where the above path is being held? Search can't find it so I can't edit it? Any help would be very much appreicated or am I just being stupid here?CheersBarry Skeels (f1fighter) [email protected]

Answer:My website is is not displaying on line

You could try renaming the .html to .htmAs regards the source of the page you see, whenever IE gets an error code returned eg. 404 - page not found or 403 - it looks that code up in shdoclc.dll and generates a page to make the error more readable. For this reason you will see the same error on any pc.

Hi,
When I'm at work certain websites contain a lot of information, pictures, links etc. But when I open the same website on my home network a lot of the information, pictures, etc do not appear.
I have searched around and found someone with a similar issue but this was regarding his own website and that was resolved by running the site in compatibility mode. This just made more content to disappear.
I am running IE9 and unfortunately i cannot use Chrome, Firefox or any alike as it is a work laptop and am unable to download/install anything. But as IE9 displays the content at work i doubt its a browser issue.
I am also running windows 7.
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Answer:Website displaying less content on different network.

Try posting the screenshots from work & from home; this would help others to understand your concerns.
It can either be of two reasons, Location/Network/ISP setting differences at home & at work or browser compatibility issues.

Although IE is not my default browser, I need it to test when maintaining webpages for the sites I manage.
IE8 in my WindowXP admin account, displays Youtube videos embedded on my site perfectly. IE8 in my limited account does not - just leaves a white block. All other browsers display correctly irrespective of whether I work in admin or limited. This happened when I upgraded from 7 to 8 (the last upgrade, I understand, that XP will take.)
I've not changed from the IE8 default settings in either account.
No doubt I'm missing something dead simple but can someone please put me on the right road.

Answer:IE8 not displaying website video content

This sounds like an add-on problem with IE that is interfering with wmv links. The first thing I?d suggest you do is reset the IE defaults. Click on ?Tools? and then Internet Options then click on the Advanced tab. Locate the Reset Internet Explorer Settings heading and then click the ?Reset..? button. Navigate to a site with video links and try clicking one of the links. If it works correctly we are done.
If links still aren?t working we need to try IE without Add-ons. Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Internet Explorer no Add-ons. Again, try a video link. If it loads correctly we will need to determine which add-on is causing the problem. Restart IE normally, then click ?Tools? on the Menu Bar and select Manage Add-ons. Disable all of your add-ons and then re-enable them 1 at a time until you locate the add-on causing your problem.

Starting sometime yesterday, one of the computers on our network's mozilla firefox browser decided that on a select few sites it would no longer display images. Instead it just displays blank space in their place. I tried deleting the cache.. but there is still a problem. It should be noted that the computer is connected to the internet through a linksys router via wireless-G connection. Most sites work just fine, its only neopets.com that doesnt. Has anyone else had this issue with Firefox?

Any suggestions? Fixes? Thanks.

I have uploaded my site Created with Dreamweaver4 and everything seems ok.However the re-direction works ok now, but my webspace URL at the bottom right on the task bar where it shows 'done' at the bottom of the browser appears, instead of my domain, name.how do I change it so that it shows my domain name, instead ofmyspace.dsl.pipex.com?.Also I have a pop up window on the site to enlage a picture, this also shows the path of the picture. i.e click here and not the name of the window I gave it in behaviours. Again when I click on view source it shows just one line eg.html> head> title>reality.com /title> /head> frameset> frame src="click here" name="reality.com"> /frameset> /html>Can I change this also, as it gives the full path to my ftp:webspace. M

Answer:Website Address Displaying path to ISP

I just used reality.com as an example. In dreamweaver when you use the behaviours panel it allows you to click on a thumbnail and assign a behaviour. In my case the behaviour is to open a pop up browser window that can be resized have navigation, resize handles, most everything you require to show the resulting picture in that window.Part of the instructions is to give the window its own name when it pops up. In my case I put picture001, therefore I expected the pop-up window when displayed in the browser, to show colour001.It does not do this it displays the ftp path to my picture on the site, eg htp//www-mysite.dsl.pipex.netThe task bar also shows the full ftp path to my website, i.e it is not masked, although when I instructed the web forwarding to display my domain I checked the masking instruction which I presumed , would hide the path to my web space.Likewise when clicking on view source the path to my webspace at pipex is displayed. e.g.[I have replace period with dash to avoid displaying (click-Here)]_html><head><title>reality-com</title></head><frameset><frame src="click here" name="reality-com"></frameset></html>

Not sure if this is the right place or even possible but here goes.

I visit a forum and on the forum next to any post you make it also shows part of your service provider e.g. ---.zone4.bethere.co.uk or ---.hsd1.or.comcast.net. my question is is there a way to stop this or make it display something else?

I ask because my service provider is very specfic and i don't want people who use the site to know my provider (for reason i dont want to go into lol this sounds liek a weird thing its nothing dodgy or weird i promise!)

anyway is there a way to not have it displayed (there is no option on the forums) or have it show something different.

Answer:stop a website displaying my service provider?

That's apparently a forum thing for that specific forum. They obviously query the available information for your ISP and display it for some reason. There may be a configuration in your account options to hide it, have you checked? Are you SURE that it's publicly displayed? It might just be visible to you and perhaps board administration.

If you post a link to one of your posts, we can tell you if a guest can also see it.

I'm not exactly sure what the best subforum is to post this issue.

Yesterday I did a clean install of Windows 7 RC. I don't have any problems with this thing on other machines.

However if I go to the website www.weblogzwolle.nl I don't see the entire website. Has this got something to do with my screen? Or with Internet Explorer 8?
What I am missing is basically the side bars of the web page.

Thanks!

Edit: on another machine running the same Win7 RC and IE8 I can see the web page perfectly!

Answer:Internet Explorer 8 not displaying entire website

Hello Plantje,

I seem to be able to see that website without any problems. You might see if using Compatibility View with the site may help. If not, then see if resetting IE8 may.

Hope this helps,

Hi all.

I am using WebEasy Professional 6 to design my website. I have inserted a form on my 'contact us' where clients can submit comments, however these comments display in html format when I view it in my inbox (Microsoft Outlook). Does anyone have any suggestions to correct this? Thanks!

Answer:Form on website displaying comments in html

Greetings, BexBomb.

Sounds like you've got something missing, most likely a bracket. Look for code similar to this:

<form>yada yada</form

Notice the missing > after the second "form".

If you can't find the culprit, post the address and I'll take a look at it, or you can validate the page at w3.org which should show any HTML mistakes on the page.

All of the info at the upper right hand corner of the webpage on PC Advisor (after logging in) is bunched together. My native LCD screen resolution is 1920x1200 and that is what I use at all times. PC Advisor's web designing/programmer needs to update the screen requirements to allow this resolution. This is not yesterday's technology. I'm using a 26 inch Acer x263w PC monitor (Not TV) and this shouldn't happen.

Answer:PC Advisor Website displaying text corruption

Congratulations on your 26" screen. However, you might want to direct your complaint to PCA itself rather than the members of its forum. If you do that, remember to include your browser type and version number and operating system so that PCA's development folk can find out whether it's a browser bug.Oh, and you might want to reduce your browser window a bit because a viewport of 1920 is just wasting all that real estate and take it from me that no-one builds websites for that screen res anyway - can you imagine the number of columns that it would need to remain easily readable?

I recently installed a dozen or so small games I had on CD onto my new Dell with Vista Home Premium 32bit and noticed today that half the shortcut icons are displaying one of the default icon pictures (the one windows associates with unknown file types usually) instead of the one for the exe's. When I browse to the exe files they aren't displaying their icons either although when I open properties for them the icons are there in the upper left. I've searched the web and could only find one solution using TweakUI but that was for XP and won't work for me. Anybody have any idea how to go about correcting this? It's not a huge deal but it's a minor annoyance.

I uninstalled several programs recently including a corrupt Windowblinds applications. When I rebooted the pc *none* of my executable programs show the right icon. They all are displaying the empty or unknow file type icon. The difference with my issue compared to most other searches I did on the forums/internet, is thay my exe files open fine. They are not corrupted, etc. They just don't display the proper icon for the program - they all display the unknown file type icon.

This is for all my exe files (desktop, Start menu, etc). If I right click on the icon and then select Properties and click on Change Icon the right icon is there and I click on it and Ok out of the properties window and then it displays fine. I was hoping to find a simpler way to fix them all and also determine if I have a bigger issue that needs fixed.

I went to Doug Knox's site and ran the EXE File fix program, I have tried importing a couple different xp file extension .reg files from the internet, I have gone into the Folder Options and added the Exe and Lnk file associations (Application, Shortcut respectively). But nothing seems to fix the issue. I even deleted the iconcache.db and rebooted but still no luck.

I also ran a couple different virus scans (trend housecall, AVG, Spy-bot SD, Spyware Terminator) with no issues detected. Overall the system is working fine, except all the exe programs/icons are displaying the unknown file type icon.

I'm having a weird issue with how a certain website is displaying in my browser. The font is all messed up, and I have no idea if it's an issue with my browser (Firefox), or my OS (Windows 7 32bit).

The site is buzzfeed. It displays fine in my other browsers, but in Firefox, one of the fonts is constantly displaying incorrectly - it looks like the wrong font is being used (it's using rockfont for some reason - which is on my system as a requirement for a pinball game I play).

Here's how it looks usually in Firefox:

And here's how it looked after I uninstalled the rockfont font:

And then just a few minutes later, it looked like this (while rockfont was still uninstalled):

Any idea what's going on with my fonts, and why it only happens on this one site, and only in Firefox? I'm using the latest version of Firefox, but this has been happening for months. After I re-installed rockfont, the page then went back to using that as a font, as in the top image.

strange problem. it happens for all my icons, but I'll use dilbert.com as an example.

I have dilbert.com on my links bar in internet explorer, and a shortcut on my desktop. In the past, the destop and link icons take on the picture of a little dilbert. But now, only the link in ie7 has the icon, the desktop icon has a generic windows icon that looks like a window with tiny icons in it.
I changed the icon by clicking properties and change icon. when I clicked on the icon to go back to dilbert.com, the icon on the desktop changed back to the generic windows icon. But in my browser, I see the little dilbert icon by the website address.
Nowhere in my browser do I see the icon that is being used for the desktop.
I have also put other websites in my favorites list, and then created a shortcut on the desktop. The website shows the correct icon, but the shortcut, shows the same generic icon as the one for dilbert.com.
I haven't a clue how to fix this. And can't find anything like this problem on the net.

So this is the problem that I am having. I am trying to fix a friends HP Laptop. It has Windows 7 Starter on it. The problem that it has is first of all is none of the general-looking type icons display either on the desktop or on the start menu. The only type of icon that appears for whatever program is listed is the general "unknown application" icon. Also, whenever I try to pulled up any kind of microsoft or "system tool" in general, such as system restore, defrag, disk cleaner, etc. it always gives me this message asking me for permission to start revcon.exe which apparently is used with the Realtek 2.0 Reader. No matter if I choose yes or no it never pulls up the program at all. Any thoughts or ideas on what the problem might be? Or combination of problems?

On the restart - all my desktop, quicklaunch, start menu, multimedia and exe. files had all reverted to the generic windows default icon.

I have managed to get quicklaunch on the taskbar icons back, desktop icons back, and some of my start menu programs back. I still cannot chanfge and sound or video file icons back to say the winamp icon, or WMP icon etc etc.

To try and fix the problem I have done the following: Used system restore, ammended the registry entry for "maxed cached items" to 2000 from 500, I have run several virus checks, defragged, ran pest patrol / adaware / spybot / crap cleaner etc etc. I have uninstalled and reinstalled winamp/quicktim/real/WMP.

I have d/l tweakui - and ran this without success.

I still cannot change from the default windows icon for media files or for my .exe files.

If I install new software - on the start menu the program appears as the windows default icon and will not automatically become the program icon. I have to manually select "properties=>change icon" to get the correct icon to display.

Before I reinstall windows (which I havent done for nearly 2 years) what can I do to fix this problem..??

Running Windows Xp Pro SP2

Answer:icons displaying incorrectly

Try the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

Earlier today, after installing Win7 SP1 and other updates, I began having problems displaying certain icons all of a sudden. This wasn't immediate; it happened after a couple of restarts. I'm not sure what could be the problem. It isn't affecting performance, or the functionality of the programs, but this isn't something I like happening to the display of my OS.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone provides. :)

I got TweakUI and changed some settings, only to click apply and have my computer look like its been sent through a time warp into the days of windows 95. My icons and folders all look like rubbish now. The colour resolution have been drastically lowered and i have no idea why, because there is no option in TweakUI to alter that. I have tried undoing the settings of TweakUI but that didnt help.

Answer:Icons displaying in low resolution

Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.

Select a restore date PRIOR to when the problem occurred. If all goes well, it should restore your computer back to its normal self before TweakUI trashed it.

TweakUI is a handy little utility to use, but it can get you into trouble if you use the wrong functions - as you've found out.

To All,

I am running Windows 7 64 Home Premium and I recently installed a program called Glary Utilities.

I created a shortcut and pinned it to the task bar and all was fine.

The next time I rebooted, the icon in the task bar had changed to a blank looking page (a little awkward to describe). I looked at the original file in Windows Explorer and it too had the same appearance.

I was able to change the icon to another program within the Glary Utility suite, but it has baffled me why the original icon for that file is not displaying properly.

When I look at the file's properties it is there.

Any ideas how I might correct this?

Thank you for your time.

Answer:Icons Not Displaying Properly

Hello KC,

You might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help if it is just a glitch.

You might also pin the source file instead of a shortcut to see if that may work better.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,

Some application icons and files that are use them to open aren't displaying their proper icon and are displaying a default windows icon.

This is happening in the taskbar, the desktop and the start menu.

I've tried deleting the iconcache.db file which didn't work.

I've attached some photos illustrating the problem.

Any ideas are extremely welcomed!!

Thanks a lot

Hi,

Recently the little quickset pop-up icons that appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen whenever I press a key like Caps Lock, Num Lock, F2 etc have stopped displaying. The icons that usually appear in the taskbar tray
have stopped appearing too. I don't know why this has happened and don't know how to re-enable them.

Need someone w/ some intricate knowledge to address this. Already been through the staples and this is the very LAST peice of setting up my pc (naturally its where things went awry).

Have reset onedrive. have uninstalled/reisnstalled client. Have made sure the shellextensions have priority in regedit.

Ive been cleaning up the context menu between group policy, regedit, and nirsoft and just finished up. Feeling accomplished and relieved...... until i noticed my onedrive is not displaying icons.
not in the navigation pane.

not in the folders.

also the onedrive stuff is missing from the right click menu.

Something that handles all that stuff was apparently mucked with.

Anyone with ideas? I'll loooooooooooooove you!

Answer:Onedrive displaying ZERO icons

not sure if its related, but figured id mention

A) just tried installing onedrive for business and linking a business account after removing regular one drive. No bueno. Same result, sync's both ways just fine but no overlay/activity icons on anything but tray and no share etc on any onedrive items in context menu.

B) i do "think" i used ccleaner as well for some of my "pruning" and instead of disabling a/the onedrive context menu item - i may have deleted it by accident (assuming one was there in the first place - i just know it isnt now).

a convoluted problem for sure, one that i am positive someone here with the knowledge of how these things work can solve. Even if a new version of windows launched tomorrow and I had to format, I'd still be apprehensive until I know exactly what caused this ala what fixes it.

ftr also did an sfc/scannow which did find corrupt files (apparently my start menu organizing since windows readded some folders and shortcuts i deleted/moved) but helped not with the onedrive issue.

Stumped..

Hi all, Sounds odd but wil explain as best I can. REcently MSN 6.1 messenger icons all appear to be the same colour which shows that all my contacts appear to be on line, even though the list is split in two, and those off line still shows that they are indeed - and correctly - are off line. Thinking this was due to the update to MSN from 6.0 to 6.1 i looked around other applications and noticed that in Nero 6.0 that the icons there dont show up properly from teh tool bar either. They are black where there should be red. so its related to red in icons, or maybe just a shade of red since I can see the PC advisor icon on the web site here and pics and images i have on the PC are all shown correctly. Any ideas for this one?Have tried to go back to the previous version of video drivers with no change.

After uninstalling McAfee Security Center and installing AVG Free edition, when I rebooted, Vista stopped displaying icons in the programs menu and in folders for some file types. I need to mention that I decided to uninstall McAfee because even though an icon resided in the taskbar I couldnt get it to open when double clicking the icon. I noticed in the process manager that when I double clicked the McAfee icon a process called mcshell.exe would start and immediately end. Also I had to install AVG in the root location C: because I couldnt install in the default programs directory, i got an access denied error even when installing as an administrator. The first time I rebooted after installing AVG, when I clicked opened windows live messenger I got an installation dialog. Same thing happened when opening Word. I also noticed that a duplicate program files folder was created. Programs still load even if icon is not displayed. Tried using system restore but that didn't work. Also tried a winbubble to restore icons but it didn't work either. Ive had the problem before that programs dont install properly or are not integrated into shell, even with uac turned off. If the only solution is to reinstall vista, can my documents still be kept intact?

Hi Everyone,I just installed ImgBurn about 2 days ago and it automatically placed a shortcut in my desktop.Last night, I decided to delete the shortcut so my desktop would look a little cleaner (less icons). But when I checked its shortcut in the Start Menu and its shortcut in All Programs, I noticed that ImgBurn's icons are not displaying correctly (I believe it's displaying the "No File/Program Assocation" icon). I recently reinstalled Windows 7 and I copied my old appdata folder. I do not know if this is what is causing the issue, as it was causing invisible icons to be pinned to my start menu.

Anyways, my current problem is, when I choose to display my desktop toolbar on the task bar, the toolbar displays my current desktop shortcuts, the sub folders you see when you view the window (ie, libraries, homegroup, network, computer, control panel, user folder, recycle bin) and icons that are not displayed elsewhere, such as a second control panel.

What could be the problem and how would I stop the sub folders and second control panel from displaying?

I have tried to remove the icons from the desktop folder, but they do not have an option to be removed. I have tried deleting them from the task bar toolbar itself, but it acts as if it deleted it, but they do not go away.

I have been doing searches, but I cannot find anything that has helped.

Thank you,
Covah

Additional query added.
Would there be a reason why my mru in my run command box isn't being retained? I do not have any cleaning software. I do have MS Essentials and Norton Ghost though.

Answer:Desktop icons, not displaying properly

My guess is: the culprit is the copied AppData folder.

Typically, you would do a fresh install of Windows, and then reinstall your applications. Copying the AppData would lead to inconsistencies, which is what I suspect is occurring. I would recommend doing a clean install, NOT copying anything over, and installing your applications. What you can copy is your user data (Documents, Music, Pictures, etc. - not the users directory).

Hello Hombrex, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If it's just the shortcut arrow overlay messed up on the icon of shortcuts, then you could use OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to restore the default arrow.Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore
Otherwise, you could do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened to undo and fix it.

My desktop folder icons have been acting pretty buggy lately. I am sure everyone is aware of what the folder icon is supposed to look like when it has pictures, movies, etc in it, and what the folder icon should look like when it's empty. I have run into a very strange problem. Explorer is not showing the "Folder" icon in the right pane when in list or detail views. In the left pane (tree view) it looks fine. In the right pane it shows up as two horizontal lines (see attached image).

The really odd thing is if I use anything other than explorer (like the "Save As" dialog in Word) the icons work. It is ONLY explorer.exe having this problem.

I have tried the following steps to correct:

- Deleted the icon cache
- System restore
- System file checker
- Changed screen resolution and color depth
- Disabled thumbnails

Nothing has helped. I have never installed WindowBlinds or any tweaking utilities that one would normally think would cause problems like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Windows XP Problem.

Probably a simple one, but I get intermittent problems where icons placed in the C:\Documents and Setting\All Users\Desktop folder, won't display. ( users log in with roaming profiles ).

I've checked permissions and policies ( DPP and Local ) although I'm happy to admit that I may have missed something.

I've even had the case where the icon is displayed for a while and then disappears from the desktop ( although it is still present with the All Users\Desktop folder ).

Any suggestions ( however basic ) would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:All Users Desktop Icons Not Displaying

Roaming profiles would probably give me a full time job if everybody would use them.

Basically, this issue occurs when corruption arrives between the roaming client who logs into computers with different configuration hardware/software on it. Sometimes it picks up the roaming profile without downloading into the PC. So, the client only sees what's on the server, which doesn't have C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Desktop.

I don't have a short term solution. Sorry. What I've seen in the industry for roaming profiles, is that nothing is under C:\Desktop & Settings\All Users\Desktop, and have everything needed on C:\Desktop & Settings\Default\Desktop. That will go all the time on the roaming profile setup after clients logs into their PCs for the 1st time.

However, all the other PCs previously with accounts will need to have their local profile re-done. And I'm kinda assuming your running images on those PCs.

Good luck.

Similar to the issue wherein icons no longer load properly for Explorer, but this isn't happening in 64-bit Explorer.

At home, when I access an ftp server by typing its address into Windows Explorer, the FTP site’s files/folders appear as Icons (as if you were browsing a My Documents or something). This also provides support for some foreign characters I have for some of my file names.

But, at work, doing the same thing just shows a list of links (as if I had typed the FTP into the web browser), but I want it to look the same as it does at home, with icons.

It certainly sounds as if it could be a graphics driver problem. Did you check that your system was OK to upgrade from XP to Win 7 with the Win 7 Compatibility Advisor? When you run it the advisor should tell you where to find the drivers.

I have a very weird issue where the folder and file symbols associated with onedrive (sync, OK or ERROR symbols) are not displayed when navigating the onedrive folder on my PC. All the files and folders only display the sync symbol while the onedrive app in the taskbar shows that there are no files syncing.
The issue become even weirder when i manually navigate to my onedrive folder on my E drive --> E:\onedrive\. Here all the icons ARE displayed correctly. As seen in the image below, the only difference between the folders is the path, where one is directly linked as the onedrive folder, while the other is the actual path on my harddrive. Similarly, the library access in the sidebar also displays the symbol issue.

I've already been able to resolve the issue abit, seeing as previously my onedrive was constantly syncing unknown files and would never display the symbols correctly, however I'm now comletely stuck with this issue after forcing a full reinstall of onedrive and completely resyncing all my files.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to resolve this issue?
p.s. I'll upload some images shortly to further clarify the problem!
p.p.s Done!

Hi. I have a distressing problem with my 32bit Windows XP. Here's what happens:
Whenever I boot all seems well up until the welcome screen disappears and it goes to the desktop. The thing is, I see my wallpaper, I see the start bar (tough without system tray icons) and I used to see most of my icons, except they don't load properly: most of them (including My Computer and My Documents) look like a document that Windows doesn't know what to open with, other things just look like standard application icon; .doc, .pdf and folders load properly; also, when I move the cursor to the start bar it turns into an hourglass.
That's the visuals, the worse problem is: I can't open anything. I can't start any application, view a picture or open My Computer and the start menu is frozen as well. Recently even the Task Manager will not come up; when it did I tried to kill explorer.exe and/or start it up using "new task", but it didn't help (explorer.exe was unkillable; once all icons and the start bar disappeared, but the process was still there and I couldn't get a new one running). Recently it got worse: only one icon shows up at all (a .pdf document) and Task Manager won't appear.
I can access the Safe Mode and a mobile Fedora Linux works fine.
I've already tried repairing using the boot CD, I lost count of the chkdsk scans performed (various types, in and out of OS), I've scanned the whole thing for viruses (took 18 hours, deleted eve... Read more

It seems your windows is not installed properly or the c: drive was not formatted properly. While installing the windows do you format the concerned hard disk drive full and not quick? Also make sure that you don't have any bad sector in your hard drive.

Try reinstalling your windows and if the problem still there then do install windows in other partition probably d: or e: etc. Hope that helps.

Hello,

I have a rather annoying problem with my XP pro laptop and would be most appreciative of any help. When I bootup, the pc displays my desktop, without any icons, then appears to do nothing. I have left it in this state for up to 15 mins, before launching explorer.exe through the Start -> Run.

After explorer launches, my normal desktop returns and I can use the PC to perform most functions normally.

There are however a few additional annoying 'quirks'. The first of these is that the XP Themes appears to have stopped working. It is possible to restart the themes, however the next time the computer is booted, the XP Themes have again stopped working. In addition, the clock has lost 15mins of time (since the symptoms started appearing)

Perhaps the most annoying aspect is that my wireless internet drops out. I've done some exploration and it seems that the Wireless Zero Config has been disabled. This can be restarted from within services, but regardless of the settings I try, getting an internet connection (even after reboot) is sporadic at best. Even using WinsockXPfix doesn't work all of the time and requires a reboot. The only thing that seems to work is to enable both the DHCP Client and Wireless Zero Config to restore normality in wireless functionality.

When the internet is up, I also suffer from the Google redirect virus, but that's not the greatest of my worries at the moment and will deal with that in due course in the appropriate forum.

I recently tried to install Ati Tray Tools instead of Catalyst Control Center

Sadly, Tray Tools hates my computer. Every time it started I got the dreaded blue screen!

So eventually I gave up and went back to CCC (after a bit of messing in safe mode)

Now for some reason, certain items on my desktop appear to have no icon (that little bit of paper with shapes on it appears).
But unlike the usual where there is no icon, the little bit of paper showing no icon is displayed over the top of the actual icon

This only happens on the desktop, and nowhere else, even for the same programs and icons

I've tried refreshing desktop, replacing icons and even refreshing my icon cache by deleting it from ...users/local and restarting

Still nothing
It's not the end of the world... but it is extremely annoying.
PLEASE HELP D:

Picture of problem attached, as I realised that my description is pretty awful

Answer:Wierd problem displaying icons

Try a System Restore to before you installed Tray Tools.
System Restore

When you get to the below window check "Show other restore points"- bottom left corner- for a better selection of points available.

The icons that I downloaded off the net are not displaying correctly (and they were before). They NOW all have blocks of colour behind them & I dont think its the text/label color cause not ALL the icons are like this.HELP

Answer:Icons not displaying correctly on win2000

You need to delete your ShellIconCache File. Do a File|Find to get it's location. It's a hidden file, so you'll have to change your file attributes to show hidden. Delete the file, then restart your computer, it will rebuild the file & the icons should show properly.

It said because of certificate errors. These came up when trying to access Outlook. When I said "show content" it would be okay only for a second then I received a message "Cannot access Outlook now, try again later". Now we could not use Outlook at all.

After work I went into safe mode and there I did not have the issue. I checked out system restore and there were two critical updates done on the 9th around 6:30 pm so I restore back to those. Did not fix the problem

This morning I went back into system restore and found another critical update done around 1:30pm on the 9th so I restored back to it and the problem was fixed.

Now no Certificate Errors when accessing Outlook.

When I am back home from work I will be trying to figure out what critical update was done at 1:30pm to get more information.

Has anyone had this type of issue before?

Thanks

Answer:Sept 10th started receiving IE blocked website from displaying content

Please help.

Im trying to help a friend out and we're both computer illiterate. He started his pc up and everything ran fine until when he gets on his desktop its blank, but wallpaper's displayed and just the cursor. I waited it out a few minutes to see what would happen and the task bar on the bottom popped up. The computer's really slow now and when I try to do a system restore it wont even let me in to do that option. He's also been having problems with the "BSOD", yea I tried helping him with this too, but still no results... If anyone has any input please please please let me know!!!! We're desperate =(

Answer:NO Icons or Taskbar displaying. Just my background and the cursor

try hitting CTL+ALT+DELTE at the same time. IF the task manager pops up then to to file then hit run. In the box type in Explorer and it all should pop up.

Hello, I've searched everywhere for a fix to this issue, but I can't find the issue I'm having anywhere.

Basically, the title explains it as best I could. In certain places, I'm finding a random document icon instead of where there was no icon before-hand. If you don't know what I mean, here's some screenshots.

I'm completely at a loss for what to do. Any help would be amazing! It's just a small issue, but I see it so much, it's so annoying. I made this account just for help.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it (It probably does), but recently I tried out Windows 10. I was fiddling around with the "My PC" area, trying to basically turn it into what I have my Libraries section as right now, because my Library customization was completely destroyed, including my extra 2 that I'd created. While doing this, I noticed that the "My Documents" folder had been replaced with the default, which was full of stuff that had been put there by games, as opposed to "My Real Documents" (creative name, I know). So, I used a program to put it into the "My PC" area (At least I think that's where it was, but I'm not totally sure, some other area, might have been Quick Access), and then I replaced it's icon to the document icon so it would look nicer.
A little while later, (like 2 hours) I reverted back to Windows 7, and I recently noticed that the icon changes I made on 10 affected some tiny random spots in 7, even though Windo... Read more

I have a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit Edition....after installing everything and running Windows Update over and over until everything was installed, I opened Devices and Printers, it asked me if I wanted Windows to download driver software and realistic icons for my devices....I chose Yes, do this automatically which was recommended. After doing this and rebooting from all of the Windows Updates installing earlier, it displayed incorrect icons and even renamed the model of my computer from a tower computer to a laptop computer...the icon changed to a laptop icon. My computer is definitely a tower computer. Dell XPS 420. Is there a way to change this back to what it was?

Answer:Devices and Printers not displaying correct icons...etc

I don't know, but it's harmless. This part of Windows has never worked perfectly for me either, and I built my own computer. So, it's just free entertainment provided by Microsoft.

I recently upgraded to build 7057, and besides running smoothly all around, there is a problem with the way folder icons display. For example, in my music folder, with the view set to 'Large Icons' (or any setting that displays an image on the folder) almost all the folders display multiple images (the exception being when there is a sub directory containing the music within one of the folders. Anyone else experience this or know a work-around?

Answer:7057 Folder Icons displaying incorrectly

I don't think it's a bug, it's because there are multiple tracks with the same album art and that's why you have the image displayed more than once, if you had different tracks in the same folder from different albums then you would see 2 images displayed on the folder, make sense? Try making a folder and just putting 1 track in it and it should display only 1 image on the folder.

So I've gone through the work of writing a custom java program to help modify my folder icons.
Said program
creates a desktop.ini file in each folder I run it on
writes this into the .ini file

Code:
[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
IconFile=.\3-10 To Yuma.ico
IconResource=.\3-10 To Yuma.ico,0
Logo=.\3-10 To Yuma.ico
iconindex=0
sets the hidden attribute on the icon to hide it as I store the icon in the same directory as the desktop.ini and music/movie/game/insert file here.
sets the system attribute on the directory
sets the read only attribute on the directory
sets the hidden attribute on desktop.ini
sets the system attribute on desktop.ini

All in all, there should be no reason I can't see my folder icons, correct? After running my program, everything is modified and attributed as it should be without any glitch. But explorer still does not actually show me the folder icon for a thumbnail. Although I am using a program for this process, it should be identical to doing it manually.

HOWEVER, when I set "Change your view" to small, list, or details, the icon appears..although very small as the name implies. Even right clicking the file displays the icon properly on the properties pane.

right click>properties>customize>change icon> DOES work properly, but I have approx. 1.5-2k folders I'm looking to do icons for...thus the program that I wrote today. It would take obscene amounts of... Read more

Hi All,

I am facing a strange issue in Windows 7. This morning when I turned my computer on the background wallpaper was missing, and most (but not all) desktop icons were missing.

The desktop icons in question include recent Excel and Word documents that I have not backed up elsewhere!

I first performed a System Restore in the hope of getting everything back to normal. However unfortunately this did not help.

After this I checked the Recycle Bin and found a number of files which had originally come from the desktop. I clicked on these and selected 'Restore', doing so presented a message to the affect of "The Desktop already has this file, do you want to replace it''; to which I responded with 'Do not copy' (or similar) - in essence cancelling the Restore operation.

Strangely now when I look at the desktop I see the files that I restored from the Recycle Bin. But I am still not seeing many of the files that seemed to have 'disappeared' (which primarily consists of more recent files that I never sent to the Recycle Bin).

I have removed the hard drive and connected it to a second computer in order to scan for viruses; so far AVG Ultimate has found none, and MalwareBytes is a fair way through scanning without yet detecting any threats.

Assuming that the issue I am presented with is not being caused by a virus can anybody offer any other possible causes and / or ways to fix the issue?

Kind Regards,

Davo

Please see the attached pic for the missing icons.
I have the icons showing in the first bar (left one in the pic).. as well as the programs inside the 'All programs' of the start menu. Only the marked part is missing icons.
I have tried changing windows themes and appearance but each theme seems to have the same issue.

after this tutorial to change all the folder icons from the default:

Folder Icon - Change Windows 7 Default Folder Icon
The tutorial worked great and all my folder icons have changed when viewing them from a standard explorer window, on the desktop, etc, however, when saving a file and choosing where to save it in the "Save As" explorer all the icons now appear blank unless you right click and assign a folder manually through the Customize tab.

Thanks in advance to anyone with a solution.

I've ripped several DVDs to MP4s. In Windows 10 - 64-bit file explorer, some of the icons for the MP4 files display as the movie poster and some of the icons appear as a snapshot of the 1st still (e.g. opening credits vs. movie poster). Is there a way to get all the MP4 icons to display as movie posters? Note: All movies play as expected.
Thanks for your help.

hey,
jus today my taskbar icons started acting crazy on me... the taskbar icons start opening up seperate programs other than the ones they were supposed to open, its like the icons for the particular programs were switched up,. for instance the icon for internet explorer opens up windows explorer, while skype opens up windows media player, and MSN messenger opens up skype while and iexplorer logo with a red X opens up messenger

Could anyone help with identifying what this is and how to correct it if possible

Thanks

Answer:Taskbar displaying icons which opens up different programs

Just right click on each icon on the QuickLaunch area and choose Properties. Then click Change Icon button, and navigate to the correct program and reset the icons.

I think someone is playing a trick on you. Change your Windows password, and set the screensaver to lock the system after 10 mins of no activity.
