Any Aussies know of a reasonable priced cable connection provider

Question: Any Aussies know of a reasonable priced cable connection provider

Hi all,
I am on dial up connection now, i pay $20 a month for unlimited use to another internet provider on top of my normal Telstra bill and its been ok as far as $$ & speed for what i have been using it for, but my new computor will have a DVD & CD in it and i would like to be able to sometimes download movies and songs with it and the dialup i think will be far to slow for that type of use.
Its not only that, but when i use the internet on the same line as phone calls, i am missing a lot of calls and others in the house are getting pretty irrritated with me being always on the net.
I am a bit restricted as far as money goes because i am on a diability pension,
so i am looking for a reasonable priced provider that will suit my needs without going to overboard with the prices and will keep the phone clear for all other normal phone calls.
I have been looking at a few differant deals but i see that if you go over a certain amount of m'bytes they get stuck into you for excess, which looks like a bit of a trap to me.
I would even be happy with normal dialup speeds during the day [ when i can get on it] and downloading stuff at off peak times or during the nights.
Or am i asking for to much for to little?
Thanks in advance for any idea's.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try Optus ADSL I think they have packages that include your phone and some free local calls. I'm not sure about ADSL but with cable when you exceed your limit they don't charge extra they just limit you to dialup speed.

I have installed Windows 7 on my unit, but Sound Blaster 5.1 Live is not compatible. Any suggestions? Thanks

Answer:Reasonable priced Windows 7 sound card

Take a quick look at this post

Sounds like you might be able to download the XP drivers and then right-click and run in compatibility mode using XP SP2 as your choice.

Might be worth a quick try.

Answer:One higher priced gpu or 2 lower priced cards on sli ?

Single-parameter benchmarks are dubious, but see:

PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmark Charts - Video Card Model List

Look like a 660 ti would be better than two GT 640 cards in SLI.

I'm not sure whether anyone manfactures GT 640 cards with SLI connectors. nVidia lists a configuration that supports SLI, but my favorite US web dealer,, doesn't sell any. The GT 640 models made by eVGA clearly don't do SLI.

Is there any place that you can get a 660 ti for ?150? Looks more like a ?250+ card. (Doesn't help that it's a brand new model.)

Best of luck.

Hi All,

I dumped my cable TV company years ago because I didn't watch enough TV to justify the cost. For a long time we didn't have a TV at all but eventually purchased a large flatscreen and a DVD/VCR player which was fine. Then, I attached my small Mac Mini to our tv and use it as a monitor. We have been able to watch whatever we want to see by simply streaming directly from the computer, or through our ROKU or our Apple TV. It has always been a completely satisfactory situation and I have never felt the need to watch anything that we couldn't stream.

Lately though, I have tried to stream several programs and have been required to log in through our "cable TV provider". Unfortunately, I don't have one. This has never happened before and I am wondering if the Cable TV and Satellite companies are trying to expand their television monopoly into the streaming. I wouldn't be surprised because streaming has become so easy to do that it isn't really necessary to go through a third party anymore.

I certainly don't mind paying for a membership to certain select channels, but (at least where I live) cable or satellite is expensive and not worthwhile when you actually watch only a small fraction of what is offered. As my husband says "5,000 channels and nothing is on!" Most of it is a crashing bore in my opinion, but there are a few things I'd really like to get and am finding that I cannot access some things without a Cab... Read more

My internet service provider is CABLE.

I'm on all the time and use a 4 port linksys router.

On the router i see an IP address in the Status area.

However, sometimes when I run an FTP server, i notice that in addition to my LAN address, i see that there is another weird IP address.

Also, I notice that if try to run a WEB server - I can not using the IP address noted on the LINKSYS.

However, the IP address that I can sometimes pick off the FTP server is addressable for a port 80 web server. It appears that both IP addresses are active simultaneously. However, the second one appears to be short lived and changes.

I understand that my CABLE provider blocks port 80, making it very difficult to serve up a web page - and the easy to use web servers utilize port 80.

Does anyone know how to easily identify this second IP address, how to lock it, how to control it, how to map it...etc etc....

Answer:Removal of Viruses /Malware - Cable provider said mail being sent from comuter

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Open the c:\SDFix folder and double click RunThis.cmd to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.

Aussies prosecute first 'spammer'

Australia is prosecuting the first alleged spammer under its new-ish Spam Act. The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) accuses Perth-based Clarity1 of sending at least 56 million junk emails since the Spam Act came into force in April last year.

And it accuses the company and its managing director, Wayne Mansfield, of harvesting some of the email addresses he sent mail to. Citing the "scale of the breach" of the Spam Act, the ACA is seeking an interim injunction until the court hearing against Clarity1.

In a release announcing the action against Mansfield, the ACA notes that his company – under its trading name Business Seminars Australia - is listed by Spamhaus, as one of the world’s top 200 spammers.

The ACA wrote to several alleged spammers based in Australia on the Spamhaus list before the Spam Act began in April 2004.

ACA Acting Chairman Dr Bob Horton said: “We advised them that they were required to comply with the new Act,” he said. “Spamhaus subsequently reported that several major Australian spammers on their list had stopped operating, or left the jurisdiction. “However, this particular operation continues today allegedly in breach of the Act.”

Mansfield denies breaking the law. He said he welcomes the opportunity to prove the legality of his operations in court, Australia’s ABC News

This is a first for me. I have just had the best experience buying computer parts online. I purchased a crystal white case from EYO for a good price. To me, it's the best case I have ever seen, pure white with terrific features. The case arrived within 48 hours of placing the order and it turned out to be damaged, I immediately contacted EYO with photo's of the damage and was told to keep the case for spares and another would be dispatched that day, no additional cost to me. I have never had an experience like this before, exceptionable service, good price, great product, instant responses to my e'mails.

You know, we are quick to critisize those online stores that choose to stuff us around, we should acknowledge with praise, those who provide a service beyond expectations. They are based in Sydney and the courier charges to Brisbane was exactly what was invoiced, rare these days .... everything about this purchase has been completely new to me.

In fact, all future purchases for parts, they will get my business even if their prices are slightly higher than the opposition. It can be a very comforting thought to know you are dealing with a completely honest company.

If you are looking to buy online, without reservation, I highly recommend EYO Technologies is the first place to look.

The sales person I was dealing with is Daniel.

I've begun sharing an office and a hard-wired ethernet connection with a co-worker. Tech support is supposed to provide us with a second connection but said it may be weeks. Technically, we aren't supposed to use routers, but I'm thinking about installing one just until they can get around to providing us with what we need. They claim that they can sense a router remotely if it is hooked up and will shut down our port if they do; I don't know enough about routers; is that actually possible, or would they have to come into my office and see it?

A few weeks ago, my computer all of a sudden became extremely slow and then I deleted some files here and there, removed programs i no longer use and then the comp was back to its normal speed.
Since then Norton has been popping up everyday informing me about a bunch of Trojan Horses that were quarantined but were not repaired. Not knowing computer much, I didn't pay much attention to this.
But a few days ago my internet provider(Rogers!!) cut my internet connection saying that i had a virus. Again, ignorantly I ran some adwares, quarantined whatever was found, and then I called ROgers and told them I cleaned it up and they hook me back up. However they said that if they find it again they'll suspend my account for a longer time.
And though I thought i cleaned the virus, Norton's still popping up everyday with what seems to be a growing list of Trojan Horses.
The first on the list is C:\WINDOWS\system32\4875 , so I went into system32 folder and deleted the 4875 folder but that doesn't seem to be helping either.

A week ago, my computer suddenly could not connect to the internet. I was using a cable directly connected to the cable modem.

Since then, I've tried:

1) Added a WiFi router connected to the cable modem. Tried using the WiFi card built in to the computer. It connects but reports "limited access", and there is no connection to the internet, and I can't access the router itself.

2) Bought a new Ethernet card, installed the drivers that came with it. I've tried it connected through the WiFi router's hard ports and directly to the modem. Hard resets (power cycling off 2 minutes) on the modem each time and still no connection.

3) In device manager, both Ethernet cards show as "working normally" with no errors. So does the WiFi card.

4) ipconfig shows only "tunneling" devices with media disconnected.

5) I've uninstalled and re-installed the drivers for the on-baord Ethernet, the WiFi card, and the new Ethernet card.

After reading some other posts, I captured the output from ipconfig and several netsh commands. I've attached them to this post. The files starting with netsh are basically the command entered with underscores replacing the spaces from the commands used to generate them.

I also borrowed another computer. It connects both directly through the cable modem, and using the Ethernet ports on the router. It doesn't have WiFi, so I couldn't test that method of access. It can also connect to and c... Read more

Hi Vincent

Thank you for your patience. I will be helping you deal with the issues raised in your log from this point onwards

Before we start jumping into things, here is a quick basic note which I mention to everyone. The fix which I have provided for you is for this computer only, it should not be used on any other computer. Each fix is tailor made for the specific task in hand. If for some reason you have system restore disabled, then please re-enable it before proceeding, an infected restore is better than none. Please read through the fix first and set enough time aside to complete the task in one session. If there is anything you feel needs clarification then please ask - do not guess! Thanks.

If this is a computer from a work place then please advise your IT department of the concerning issues before commencing past this point.

Please follow these directions in the order they are set out for you.

First of all...

Go to control panel - add/remove programs
Make sure there is a check in the box at the top which says "show updates"
Scroll down and check for this update to see if it exist:
"Security update for Windows (KB951748)"
Click on the change/remove button

Open up HJT and select the second entry - Do a system scan only
Place a checkmark next to these entries:

I have decided to use DCC to connect my two computers for my home network. This is because both computers are only 2 meters apart. I was wondering if I should use a serial cable or parallel cable for best speed results, or does it matter? Both motherboards are less than a year old, so they have the 25 pin female connector, and each has a 9 pin male serial connector.

I was hoping I could DCC with firewire cable, is that possible? Or can I do DCC with a USB cable? I am leaning towards parallel because of low cost. Which connection should I use? Thanks for the advice.

Answer:Direct Cable Connection -- serial or parallel cable? Or?

Uhhhh or you could make this really easy on yourself and just get two cheap NICS and use a crossover cable, set two different static IP's and wallah.

Answer:Change service provider for the Mobile Broadband connection for Lenovo SL300 ?

hi, I am also having the same problem. Actually, they have the Telenor SIM card in it and if you need to change the service provider, you have to open the correct part and insert the new SIM. I'm moving to Denmark and would need to change the service provider. I will inform you if I manage to open and change the new service provider, btw, if you happen to do it, plz inform me. You can check how to open the WAN chip hatch here (I extraced these pages from SL300_hardware_maintenance_manual). However, we have to be sure if your WAN device is operator-locked (I mean locked to Telenor) or not? Tomorrow, I am going to call Lenovo Sweden.Message Edited by rakusson on 05-06-2009 03:15 AM

so, most ADSL or cable providers give you a modem / router that also functions as a firewall.

If I add a router from say Linksys EA3500, which was owned by Cisco

does it offer better network security? Exactly what extras does it offer?

If not, who's buying these routers while every cable / ADSL provider all gives you a modem / router in the 1st place?

Answer:does brand name router gives better security than router from cable provider?

To answer one of your questions - people buy their own because even though the cable company lets you use one already, there is a fee for it in your monthly bill.

So I my laptop is upstairs and my At&t Uverse cable modem is downstairs and I believe there is some interference in the ceiling because although the signal always reads as "excellent" often times it seems to run a bit slower upstairs than when i bring it one floor down. I was wondering if connecting the laptop to the modem directly would be more helpful. (I already have a hidden wiring route that I made to run a hdmi cable from my tv downstairs to the laptop upstairs) I bought a 50ft cable cord and was wondering if all i need to do is plug it in or if i have to somehow program the connection so it knows to run through the cable instead of the wireless signal. I don't have a router either...not sure if id need one as they didn't provide one. Detailed help is much appreciated!

Answer:How do I set up a connection to a cable modem with a cable cord?

Just plug it in at both ends. It should work fine.

Once plugged in, it will take a few seconds to detect the new wired network and get an IP Address. After that you should be all set.

Edit: You can disable the Wireless if you want. There is either a switch on the laptop or a Fn+Fkey combination to do it.

Today i have a new problem with my adsl. The wireless was working at full 'advertised' speed last night, then today i noticed the wireless connection symbol in the task bar had changed from 54mbs to only 2 mbs, and a speedtest showed that it was a tenth of the speed it used to be.

Because i just installed my modem yesterday, i thought maybe this was just the isp limiting my connection until i register the modem or something. However, when i connect an ethernet cable between the modem and my computer, the connection works at full advertised speed. Does this rule out the possibility that my isp is limiting my signal, and suggest that the problem is with my wireless settings? Thanks for any help. The modem is a speedtouch 780.

Hello everyone,
I have an internet connection problem and was wondering if anyone here can help.
I cannot connect to the internet even though all the green lights on the modem are solid and steady. I have a laptop connects (ethernet cable) to the modem (which connect to the ISP). I ask my ISP support to verify my IP address and my modem mac address and they check out good. (I have an XP OS, IE, firefox, and opera web browsers, and a cable modem connection to the ISP - all three browsers cannot connect to the internet.) I can ping the yahoo and google websites and my loopback address, but cannot access these websites via my browsers. I look in the TCP/IP protocol properties and they're all set to automatically obtain the address. I also tried to manually configure the ip address, the sub mask, the dns servers, and the default gateway (first in the general tab, then in the alternate configuration tab) to the ones I found the network connections detail. I tried the ping, ipconfig, and netstat commands to try figuring out the problem but no luck.
Has anyone comes across this problem?

Any help and advices are much appreciated.
Thx in advance.

If, to transfer files between two W98 computers, one wishes to use the Direct Cable Connection, a communication facility available on W98, does the cable have to be a null modem cable or would a straight-through cable suffice? My question applies to either serial and/or parallel ports.

Since DCC knows by default and by design the connection is a direct connection, with one machine designated as host and the other as guest, isn't DCC software smart enough to accommodate either reversal or non-reversal of pins 2 and 3?

I don't get what's wrong with this computer. Almost everyday it acts slow, it takes about 2 minutes to login to a page. Some days it will act fast and other days it won't and it's annoying, especially when I have to use the internet to research! It's even acting worse than a 56k modem. I've done a spyware check with spyweeper and it finds adware sometimes and I delete them, but it doesn't seem to have an affect on the speed. Does anyone have a clue what the problem might be and how to fix it. Also I have a very old cable modem, I've had it since 2002 I believe. It's a Surfboard SB4100 Cable Modem.

This is for a friend who can't connect because of this problem.

He has an older (3 yrs) Dell computer that he has been using with a cable modem, etc. for a while. It stopped connecting a few days ago.

Cox cable (the provider) ran a pulse (?) or something thru his line and said it was all right but that he needed to upgrade his Windows ME to XP because they don't support ME any longer. (This sounded a little suspect that the cable connection was reliant on the OS in the first place or that it could even "see" it.) The tech on the phone ran him thru some other steps but this was the final conclusion.

OK, he went and bought a copy of XP sp2 and installed it. Seems all right. No connection but the computer said the ethernet card was working.

He went and borrowed his neighbor's cable modem and cables and tried it. No connection. It seems everything, as far as he and I can figure is right.

He went and bought a new ethernet card just to see *if* it did have problems. No connection.

This is making him nuts (the cable people can't come out for over a week) and we've been trying other things -- me on the phone operating my computer with XP and seeing if our settings and such match. Everything looks OK but it obviously isn't because he can't connect.

So he upgraded to XP (as told by cable provider), substituted a known good cable modem and cables, replaced the NIC card and made the settings match mine (now I do use DSL if it makes diff... Read more

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I know geek squad's prices...and they are...about on par I'd say for the amount of time it takes to do all of the above but what do you guys think?

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

edit: maybe there are just rear stacking ports? The fronts must just be sfp 1 GbE?

I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. PSTs are really a hard case since you can't really make incremental backups. I also doubt that some employees will understa... Read more

A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation ... Read more

Answer:Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

Is this a reasonable graphics card?

ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256Mb AGP

It will be used with a Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775 mobo

on a 2.8ghz celeron with 1gb Ram, 200gb hdd

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me £70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

I have scanned this site with no results plus tried putting ISP/costs/availabilty in Google to no avail. Can someone suggest an ISP for my daughter who wants one to use from say 8pm to 8am? As she can only access it at these times a 24/7 supply is not wanted. Broadband is not an option because of the cost.

Answer:Reliable ISP at a reasonable cost.

Hello all, I think my monitor may be about to die, which is sad, because I really like it. However, it is over 7 years old and I don't know if I can justify the price of a repair. I'm using a 21" Viewsonic P815 which was pretty pricey 7 years ago. I browsed the NewEgg site but figured I'd make a post and get some expert opinoins I use my PC for surfing, and games. I'm REALLY trying not to break the bank, I want to stay under $500. Any ideas are appreciated, as well as links to sites with exceptional prices.

Answer:Reasonably priced 21" CRT monitor?

Yeah, so i'm looking for a cheap windows 8.1 tablets at a cost around 200$ and 250$.
I want a tablet for watching videos and gaming but at a pretty low cost because of my budget and I don't know where to search for them. The size of the tablet I want is 10.1" and it should contain about 64GB of memory, 2-, or 3GB of ram and a good processor.
Is it too much for 200-250$? Should I have bigger budget? I really would appreciate an answer that includes some specs of the tablet like battery's mAh rate, size and resolution, processor name and clockspeed and of course the price and name of the tablet.

Really not sure what sub to post this in. anywho.

My friend is offering me basically everything in his case. He pieced it together from newegg less than 6 months ago. I haven't kept up on the tech. the last few years so I'm coming here for opinion. Everything has 4+ ratings on newegg, just curious if this is an ok combo.

My intent is for general use and a lot of gaming. Light photo/video editing.

I'm not too concerned about products outdating. Just as long as I can play some of the latest and upcoming games(GW2/SC2) on bearable settings. Should I spend my $500 elsewhere?

Answer:Looking for opinions on this priced custom PC

Everything looks good, except perhaps the Mushkin memory, which is hardy but not as fast in actual performance as you might wish.
The prices are inflated over what I pay... The Samsung DVD drive is $19 to $20. Memory can be found $12... etc... but the final price is about right.

Why are computers so over priced?

I got a laptop in 2010 a 640 hard-drive ,4 GB RAM and AMD phenom 2 X3 for $400 and a desktop computer for $500 1TB hard-drive , 4 GB RAM and four core processor !!!

Yet 70% computers today are still at that price with same spects and no SSD ,HDMI or blue ray only on some selected units.

I hear from people most brand computers very much so best buy ,office place or office related stores ,walmart and so on the computer are three years old. That only if you order parts and put the computer together you get more for the price.

We are talking almost 5 years from when I got computer yet price with same spects. So in extras or addon.

I'm tired of this hard drive nonsese and would love to go SSD from now on.Yet it is over price and same spects.

I need to get myself a new optical drive and I'm at a loss as to what kind to get. I know that DVD would be the best, as I do allot of gaming and hate having to switch cds during an install. It would be great if the drive did not have a tray. Also, if someone could run through the specs one should look at when looking at DVD drives, that would be great!!

thanks a bunch : )

Answer:In market for a reasonably well priced DVD drive

You want the drive to be able to support dual-layer and write both DVD-R and DVD+R. A DVD-ROM is a useless purchase in our time.

Have got the shrink DVD software but find I need a burn software to actually burn it to a DVD.

Now I have got the free Sothink Movie DVD Maker and it works fine but in between "sections" it flashes up an annoying ad for the Pro version it is $40 and for the amount I will use it for a tad expensive.

So any ideas welcome

A recent report by HKEPC shows that Intel will be cutting the prices of certain key SKUs to make them and the price-point they're targeting, more competitive. For instance, until now available for over US $500, and replaced by the Core i7 960, the Core i7 950 (LGA1366, 3.06 GHz, quad-core) chip will be placed at the $294 price-point, displacing the Core i7 930 2.80 GHz chip.

Answer:Core i7 950 to be Priced Under $300 This August

Well with the i7 975 Extreme in my PC and not being able to upgrade to any iX chip in my M17x-r1 I will have to think about selling the r1 and finding an r2.

Ok, I am basically new here and have a system I built in the middle of 2007. I am trying to see if it is viable to upgrade any of the components to make it a little more competitive for the rest of this year, but I don't know that there is much I can do with it without buying multiple components.

I have:

MSI AM2 Athlon 64/X2, PC6400 mem. capable motherboard
4600+ Athlon X2
NVIDIA 9600GT 512mb
2 gb PC6400 DDR2

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7, and despite 2gb of memory it runs well.

Basically, I don't know if there is much that can be done with this. It's kind of stuck where it is. I could get a little faster dual core X2 processor, but I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Obviously a quad core CPU would require a new motherboard and CPU, so might as well do that with a whole new computer build. I could upgrade to 4gb of dual channel memory, but I don't know that games/programs would utilize it enough to be worth it. Video card wise, I have a 19" 1280 x 1024 monitor, so I whether or not a better video card would get a huge difference in framerate at that resolution I'm not sure.

I am primarily looking at this in regards to games like Bioshock 2, etc. coming out this year. I would just like to run those newer games a little better for this year until I anticipate building a new system in 2011. I have heard a lot of people say that 4gb of memory isn't totally used by most applications yet. I have heard that un... Read more

I have Comcast cable. The Motorola Surfboard modem is connected to my desktop via Ethernet cable. I occasionally have to work with friend's laptops, and need to connect to the Web wirelessly, so am considering getting a wireless router. Trouble is, I can't find much info on the Web that tells me what I need, and prices go from $25 to $1200. I figure I only need something very simple, since I have no home network or multiple computers throughout the house.

So, can anyone recommend a good and relatively inexpensive router? Review in PC World liked the Belkin N, but have no idea if that's suitable or overkill or what.

I am currently running it off of Bart PE but that isn't much help because I can't even view pics or access the internet. My nephew suggested recently that I buy some extra memory for my Dell Dimensiion 8250 computer, which is a couple of years old. Knowing that I have Rambus RD-RAM, he searched the Net and told me RD-RAM was both harder to find and more expensive than he expected.

He went to PrimeWatch and found only two websites which had RD-RAM available. Then he went to eBay and told me I could pay $400 for 1G of CD1066 RD-RAM or $256 for 1G of PC 800 RD-RAM.

I have two slots of 256 RD-RAM -- PC 1066, unless I'm mistaken -- which means I have two open slots. My nephew told me I could fill the two open slots with 512 PC 1066, which would give me 1.5 G total. Or, he said, my PC could hold up to 2 G of PC 800 RD-RAM. (All of this terminology is new to me, but my nephew appears to understand it quite well.)

I remember hearing a while back that the price of memory was dropping rapidly, but my nephew told me that seems to have changed. Is it possible that I could find better prices for RD-RAM than those shown on eBay?

Answer:How easy is it to find RD-RAM at a reasonable price?

I have a very annoying issue wherein the small rubber V-shaped or triangular pegs attached to the base of the extended battery of my U150 have come off; so now the laptop wobbles when I type. I've called the service center (Philippines not India), they were very nice and courteous, but had no replacement part number so they cannot replace the part even if I am under warranty! How ridiculous is that?!?!  It would be so easy to mail me a pair of pegs and I would simply superglue it on the base.  What they offered is even more absurd!  They want me to give them a $90+ deposit to send them my whole battery pack (that is working just fine) which they are willing to replace in order to get the new legs on it.  We're talking about a pair of pegs worth no more that 25-US-cents!!!  Does anyone have any solutions? Or is there some other mystical resource to get these rubber pegs replaced? This issue has been going on for two months, and Lenovo has not replied, emailed, nor called as promised by the customer service receptionist who said they would refer my claim to Lenovo.

I am trying to find a touchscreen monitor that is actually priced reasonably. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches and the pixel resolution needs to be at least 1024x768.

I can't find any for a fair price. They make all kinds of good ones though... for $250 and up! They can't be THAT expensive since you can buy android tablets for like $150. Even mouser doesn't carry touchscreen LCD panels anymore that have a greater resolution than 640x480.

I have managed to find ONE that has a somewhat reasonable price but it's sold by a shady looking seller. Half of the reviewers didn't receive a working unit and the other half did.

I call ******** on these prices. They don't cost that much to produce. Something like that shouldn't cost more than $100. I'm not willing to spend more than $150 on a touchscreen monitor unless the resolution is 1280x720 or greater and even then I'm not spending more than 175-200.

So where is a place you can buy these from that are priced reasonably? If there are none, can I buy a $100-$150 android tablet just for the LCD panel, take it apart and somehow re wire everything up for use with a PC?
