No Windows update service - can't DL updates

Question: No Windows update service - can't DL updates

moving from Vista/Win7 forum

Vista machine cant perform win updates - no service
My stepson has been using bittorrent :/ - I think hes gotten some infection. Can't start the windows update service. There is not even a service called Windows Update defined.

I tried the wuagent download and force, nothing.

I ran malwarebytes and it did not find anything. Can't run defender because it wont download the updates.

I tried starting the service as it appears on another vista machine (system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs) but that does not do anything.

See image at http://www.techsupportforum.com/f217...ce-472865.html for screen shot (can't reupload)

Preferred Solution: No Windows update service - can't DL updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've restarted my computer several times with no success. I'm lost. Will someone please help!

When I go to Services Windows Update does not show up I'm running Windows 7 64bit.

Also, when I try to install my printer, I get a message saying the driver's signature is not being recognized. I'm not sure if the two issues are related. Please advise. Please please advise

Answer:Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service

Seen this a couple times at work - go in to the Control Panel and search for Troubleshooting - there's a section in there to fix errors with Windows Update. Usually, letting that run, along with a reboot, will fix that.

When I click on windows update a box appears with a red shield and when I click on that another box opens that says: "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates, Because The Service Is Not Running. You may need to restart your computer."

I should point out that this happened after the following:
HDD failed, installed a new HDD - same spec and size.
I started the computer with the Windows7 Repair disk that I made up last year.
I reinstalled a system image that I saved 2 months ago.

Now I can't seem to update windows.
Is there a way to get a new windows 7 downloaded to my HDD I have my 25 digit code.

I would like to be able to use (ie- not loose) the data and programs that are in the system image.

Thanks for your help

I am working a computer that has new install of Vista with SP2 but will not run windows update. All drivers are installed from Dell website. Norton 2013 is running and up to date.
The error I get is "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
I have tried stopping and starting BITS, Remote Procedure Call, Windows Updater then I tried removing the Software Distribution folder files; then stopping and starting Wuauserv in command line. Still does not work. Am at a loss.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

FYI. I ran ComboFix before realizing that I should wait until instructed to. I have it in my C: directory if it is of any help.

Answer:Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not

Since it's a new install...why not check the hard drive first...then just reinstall Windows, if the hard drive checks out as good?

A local computer repair shop did a lot of damage to my HP Pavilion Elite with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I believe they broke the windows update tool and I have tried 4 or 5 ways to fix it that haven't worked yet. I'm hoping someone else has an idea.

Situation:Run Windows Update, get an error that says "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. Try restarting your computer.
Restart computer, same error.
Check Running services, "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service says "started."
Check Running services, "Windows Update" service is "Started"

I am on Windows 8 (original/classic x64 Pro), and since I have now installed all updates, I attempted turning off the Windows Update service, and then tested updating Windows Defender. Voila! It worked.

But if I keep my system in the configuration, will there be an issue running or updating Windows Defender (and would there be a functionality issue for Windows itself in the future)?

i noticed that recently i haven't been getting my regular windows updates and now when i click on windows update via the control panel, it takes several minutes to load and then when it finally does, it comes up with a red x and the quote above in the
title. I tried opening windows defender as well and it said that it was turned off. i click turn on and it gives me a timeout error after about 2 minutes: 0x800705b4. One thing to note is that i recently got a virus on my computer about 2 weeks ago. According
to AVG it is gone but i have my doubts. i manually downloaded the Microsoft security essential definitions too because it wasn't updating for use and it is now working. The scan is currently in progress but i don't think ill find anything because i did the
same thing with AVG. I tried multiple things from threads like restarting the services and such but to no avail. Please help me, i'm desperate for a windows update. Ill provide any system information that is required for the solution.

Follow all instructions in READ & RUN ME FIRST, then post the logs in the malware forum.
It's likely that those service entries have been wiped by a ZeroAccess infection.

My neighbour has given me his laptop to sort out and I have discovered it is refusing to do any windows updates. It says that the windows update service is not running so cannot update. I have checked as per instructions on the net that the service is set correctly and it seems to be. Does anyone have any idea as to what is causing this. I did find trojan viruses and malware on it and I have got rid of all of that i think.

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:
6 GB RAM
AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... Just bought new never used factory fresh PC Acer AXC-605-UR29
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 manufacrtured this year,
I checked for latest updates and sure enough Service Pack 1 shows up in updates

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Download size: 9.1 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is a recommended collection of updates and improvements to Windows that are combined into a single installable update. The service pack can help make your computer safer and more reliable. A typical installation will take about 30 minutes to complete, and you will have to restart your computer about halfway through the process.

This is a brand new PC that was loaded with factory Windows 7 SP1 so what is going on here?
Can I simply ignore the update? My only concern is that somehow MS updates will is considering
Windows 7 outdated and that I will receive no more updates since the Service Pack 1 is showing up
in the update section. How the heck is the possible with a factory image. One other thing that might help is that before I could check for any new updates Windows said I required a update to windows update. I
Did this update before finding the lastest updates. Also many updates are post cut off date for Windows 7 SP 0 so it did show updates until December 2014, I guess I will find out it Windows will continue to supply new updates this coming Tuesday...

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

hello friend..

I cannot update windows 10 to anniversary update. Every time I check for update, this came out

"We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet."

I am connected to internet, Mozilla firefox is ok, utorrent is ok, everything is fine except windows update.
I have try disable the firewall, turn off windows defender, disable antivirus, none of it work.
I downloaded windows10 update assistant, did not work.
I don't know what is blocking windows update form connecting to internet.

Any suggestion? or perhaps solution.

Thank You.

First Off I would like to say Hi :)

Anyways, Im running service pack 3, and for quite some time I have not been able to use windows update.
Below Are the steps I have ALREADY done, to no avail:

I sweeped my computer for any form of malware, viruses, etc.
I tried using Dial-a-Fix to reinstall and restart Windows Automatic Updates.
I tried tracking to C:\WINDOWS\inf\au.inf and installing. (Yes I Have a SP3 CD mounted from an ISO)

-----------------------------------------

So...After all of that it still does not work. Confused i did this: Cmd>services.msc

And Seen Automatic Updates was back on the roster, BUT when i click it and Click START on the left a nice little message pops up:

"Configuration Manager: A required registry key is missing or windows failed to write to the registry."

Now, take heed ive already tried MS's method of reinstalling windows update, but I find it does NOT reinstall the registry keys.

My best solution in my opinion is to get someone's exported keys and just import them:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WUAUSERV

Because they do not exist on my computer.

Thanks So Much.

Hi,

If you are up-to-date with Windows updates, and then decide to install SP3 via Windows Update, the size of the download is about 60MB, whereas the SP3 network install file is over 300MB – so, I'm assuming that Windows Update is downloading only the files required to update one's system to SP3 – is that correct?

The problem is, I'm planning to re-install XP soon (And I have another XP system to update), which will mean that I will have to download ALL the updates again (which will also be a security risk, as I'll be doing so with an unpatched version of XP). So it seems it would be best to download the full SP3 file (which is fairly slow and costs money in South Africa as well).

So I would essentially be downloading many of the same updates a 2nd time. Is there any way to avoid this in the future?

If I manually download all updates after SP3, I can back those up and use them to update new installations of XP, or separate, existing installations. But, what happens when the next SP is released? (I realize that there may not be another SP for XP, but this applies to Vista as well.) I would either have to download the full SP at several hundred MBs, or update only the required files via Windows Update and have no backup if I wanted to re-install XP again (and I would have to do the same thing on both systems).

Is there any way to manually download an SP3 file that holds just the not-yet-released updates, so that it can be re-used?

Any other ideas?

i upgraded from win 7 to win 10 in early august. no problems. i've been installing all updates since then and installed updates always showed status of updates. after installing fall update i noticed my update history was erased and any updates since, like defender definition files, don't appear in the list. only one update is listed: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3103688) installed on 11/14/2015.

I was referred to the Vista forum by 'nasdaq' from the malware forum.  After working with the PC, he stated that the system contains no malware that is preventing updates.

I'm working on a Vista 32-bit PC which won't accept any updates.  Windows Updates appear to be stuck - any updates are rolled back with the error of them "not being configured properly".

I tried running the Windows Update troubleshooter and it immediately popped up an error "Troubleshooting cannot continue because an error has occurred".  Next, I followed the instructions to disable startup programs & services (clean boot) and then install the update - it failed with an error code of 80070BC9.  So far, searching for fixes for that error code have led to failed attempts.

When I try to install SP1 manually, I get a message that "the installation cannot proceed until your computer is restarted".  After I restart and try to install SP1 again, I get the same restart message (ie: loop).  I've tried to do a 'sfc /scannow' at the cmd prompt in various places, but it basically states there "is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete" (ie: another loop).

I also ran the update readiness tool and that did complete without errors, but the outcomes above still apply.

Any ideas?

I have looked elsewhere on the forum and I gather - due to many problems being slightly different - that it is best to upload a log which will display to a better person than me why the update may not be installing.

Having said that.... The scannow didn't generate a sfcdetails.txt file

Results of scan - "did not find any integrity violations" so I don't know what to upload..

I have not been able to update my itunes because it can't connect to the server.  I have no problem with internet access.  In my troubleshooting, it said the first thing I should do is make sure all Windows updates have been installed.  When I try to check for updates, I get a pop up that says "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."  Restarting does nothing.  I have run AVG, and only tracking cookies were found/resolved.  I have run malware bytes with no issues found.  I would appreciate some help in figuring this out and resolving it.

Download tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One).  Safe Mode with Networking boot, and run items #26 & 27 [I might be off 1-2 numbers], which will reset/restore windows services to their normal operations.  If other defaults are pre-checked, let them run also.  The techs here might suggest running Minitool Box and a couple of anti-virus, anti-malware programs and report -- however, let them enter in and guide you through their very thorough process, you should be fixed up in no time.

I have recently installed W2K (about 3 times and I finally got it right). Anyway, I want to know if there is any way to save all the windows updates/services packs I've downloaded. I'm a hopeless tweaker, and it's just a matter of time before I screw things up enough that I have to reinstall. I have a dialup connection, and I really don't want to spend hours dling that stuff again, so if I could save all my updates in such a way as to easily be able to reinstall them (i.e. from a CD-R or Zip disk), life would be much easier!

Thanks a bunch

Answer:Saving Windows Updates/Service Packs

Once installed, you can't save them to disk any more.

All Windows Updates, including Internet Explorer and all the rest can however be downloaded in their entirety from the <A HREF="http://corporate.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp">Windows Update Corporate Site</A>

Just choose save to disk, instead of 'run from current location'

Good luck,

So it should have downloaded this and installed. So why the difference? It makes me feel uneasy, to say the least.Advise pleaseThank You

Answer:Urgent - Windows 7 Update Service Update June 19 2012

I called Microsoft just now.
They established a remote session directly to my PC.
After verification that my OS is legit etc. they had a look at this.

They recommend that I reinstall Windows from one of their ISO images
and not from the HP recovery partition.

The guy said he wouldn't trust that update as there is the information link
missing.

I only can do what he says, downloading that 3 GB ISO and burn the DVD
and reinstall Windows.

So, if you get the SAME looking update, my advise is as his.
Don't install that update.

The last few days, Defender has been trying and failing to update its definitions. A manual update from Defender fails. Now Defender isn't working. Pressing Defender's Start button gives the message that the underlying service isn't running. The service is set to automatic, it can be started but immediately stops.

Is there any known way to repair this short of a Windows refresh?

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release to Automatic Updates

Hi All,

Microsoft is committed to providing quality products to customers. As part of this commitment, we would like to remind you that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) will be released to Automatic Updates shortly. The third service pack to Windows XP includes the previously released updates and hotfixes to Windows XP, creating a new baseline for servicing.

Optional Actions

If you wish to prevent users from installing Windows XP SP3 through Automatic Updates, Microsoft recommends you take one or more of the following steps:

1. Download and deploy the Windows Service Pack Blocker Kit. The Blocker Toolkit is available in the Microsoft Download Center.

2. Deploy an update management solution that provides full control over the updates you deploy to computers in your network (Compare Update Management Solutions). IT Administrators using an update management solution should use their product’s standard features, rather than the Blocker Toolkit, to control SP1 distribution.

Answer:Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release to Automatic Updates

Thank you Nick. Now we only need to find out which countries this applies to. The last time Microsoft issued a statement about the SP3 release it caused a telephone storm in several countries - people called their national Microsoft service because they could not find the download link.

It wasn't until weeks later that the last of the countries got access to their service pack in their own language.

Microsoft apparently haven't learned or will they service all countries simoultaniously this time?

Windows XP Unofficial Service Pack 4 Gets Significant Updates

Windows XP no longer receives support since April 2014, but users who are yet to upgrade have already found several ways to keep their computers patched.

And one such way is the so-called Windows XP Unofficial Service Pack 4, which has recently received a new update with improvements and fresh updates.

It?s worth mentioning from the very beginning that this service pack wasn?t created by Microsoft, and if you?re still on Windows XP, you have all the reasons in the world to consider upgrading to a newer version of the operating system.

What?s new in version 3.0
Windows XP SP4 Unofficial version 3.0 and 3.1a, which both debuted this week, come with all the POSReady updates released by Microsoft until January 2016 (since Windows XP no longer receives support, updates for the POSReady version can also be installed on this version and address some of the security holes that might exist in the operating system).

At the same time, the version update also brings fixes for a number of issues reported by users in the previous releases, as well as patches for the false positive malware warnings that some users have been getting in version 2.

Additionally, if you install this new version of the service pack, you also get live installation, proper integration of the latest time zone update, as well as fixes for DxDiag registry errors.

Keep in mind, however, that even if you install this service pack, y... Read more

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to read/answer my problem.  I am an admin and some of my users have been experiencing this issue recently.  It seems to have happened after Windows Updates.  Our systems are Dell 7250/7450's about 2 years old (give
or take).  They are running Windows 8.1 and mostly standard programs (office, Kaspersky Anti-virus) but, they are also running Dell Data Protection|Encryption (Enterprise Edition).
My first case was a user in the airport heading to Japan and couldn't get logged in.  That was bad.  Now, I have lots of users who cannot login to their computers unless they're on the local network.  I'm interested in finding out how I can

Hi there,

I am writing on behalf of my father, who has run into an enormous amount of trouble upgrading my computer. He has recently upgraded the motherboard and CPU of my computer (to the specs provided in my profile), and since doing so has been unable to install/update windows 7.

The computer operated just fine until we replaced the old processor and mobo.

The initial new installation of the OS goes swimmingly, but then as soon as the service packs begin downloading and configuring - the computer will do the standard repeated restarts and goes through the configuration procedure, then will simply not boot at all after. Windows Repair does nothing, and the only option is to reinstall the OS from the BIOS, to simply replicate the exact same issue.

He is at a total loss of what to do. We have tried using different SATA cables, installing to different hard drives, we have done memtests to check the RAM, clean installs. He'll have tried a fair few things I have no idea about and cannot list here - he is fairly computer literate and has spent the entire weekend failing to fix this issue.

The computer operates normally with just service pack 1 installed, but then this issue arises with one of the subsequent updates, to a fairly consistent fault every time.

What could the problem be? What could fix it?

Thanks a lot for any help, this is mind boggling stuff - i'd never believed replacing a bloody processor and mobo could result in such a seemingly incurable problem.

Installed June 2014 updates. On startup "Failed to connect to a window service blah blah blah."Haven't had this problem for some while. However our 'friends' at Microsoft never disappoint.Latest June updates have resurrected it. Last time it related to just one update.Anyone any idea which is the culprit this time?
I have done a system restore and everything is back to normal. Running Vista (ok. stop rolling about laughing)

Answer:Failed to connect to a window service following Windows latest updates

Set the updates to notify but do not download and install. Then run win updates and install one at a a time. Rebooting when required. You might find that they will all install correctly this way and possibly you won't get the error. If you do then you'll find the update culprit so you can uninstall and 'hide' it.
I'm not laughing.
Honestly.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help

Hello,

Could someone help me out with this question. Is there a program that will run on your computer to check if Windows XP is in need of any critical updates or updated patches? By the way, not sure what patches mean. That will show you my computer IQ. If someone could assist me, it would be appreciated.

Adam

Answer:Program to check for critical updates and updated patches for Windows XP Service Pack

Hello Adam, Welcome to TSF!

If you go Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Automatic Updates > set the updates to Automatic (recommended) you should not have any problems obtaining updates (patches), because your system will do it for you in the background.

To check if you have missed any updates, go Start > All Programs > Windows Updates (It's located on the top left of the All Programs screen) > follow the on-screen prompts.

Try these two methods and post back with the results.

Kind Regards,

Just wondered if anyone else has had the same issue when they tried to update Windows Vista SP1 to SP2. The reason I was trying to update is to update to Internet Explorer 9 for 6 as its my wifes laptop that she very rarely uses. I thought it would be quite easy to do but tried several times and still no joy.
The message that comes up is ERRORNOTFOUND(0x80070490)which I'm aware means Windows cannot search for updates.
I have checked for updates and the following is trying to update but also fails : Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)
The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5710 running Vista SP1 32 bit
Finally I have no repair disc as this is already installed so I tried a reboot, F8 and repair and that also failed....
Any suggestion what to try next??
Many thanks

I have tried running windows updates but receive the error message

i have ran anything i could find on the support site for microsoft for windows update, the trouble shooter turned up nothing.

i have also attempted ot add the wuau.adm template but there is none to be found..

I do a repair install and hesitate to get all other updates then if that goes well get SP1, well all these 78MB download and install, but when I restart I still am unable to get into windows.

It completely loads and as it switches from the boot screen to the log on screen it auto restarts. My uncle had a similar problem but I was unable to contact him.

any help would me most appreciated

I would like other user's experiences and opinions with the setting of Windows Update Service.

If I do allow updates, should I let them be automatic? How should I set defaults in the Update Service?

Here is why I ask if I should allow the updates:

1. One of my serious corruption problems that prompted me to restore my system from a backup was that a Windows update failed, reverted and resulted in my .Net Framework 2.0 from working. My system was OK prior to that update.

2. In the old days I never used a new software update until it had been in general use for over 6 months. This still seems to be valid since we have SERVICE PACKS that correct for early problems. Why should I allow a Microsoft update to install as soon is it is avaliable (it is, afterall, a new program module).

3. I have seen updates that both provide new features and modify old ones. This can be bad or good. It would be nice to know more details about what an update will do. I have seen changes in my Outlook that have been good ones, but surprised me. I don't normally like surprises, however. I also know of updates that have taken features away.

4. I see a lot of problems showing in the forum that people have after an update. Why should I expose myself to added potential problems when I have no problem with the way Windows worked before an update?

5. An automatic update often reboots my computer. I am often logged into my computer for weeks at a time. I like that stability knowing it is up wi... Read more

Not sure what has happened but the day before yesterday I got an error stating Windows update service had stopped. I tried to run and it said the service had stopped and I needed to restart. That didn't fix it. I tried to manualy start Windows update and checked BITS and it was also off. I started both of them and then tried to run update again. I got the error the service was not running and it had indeed stopped. I fooled with it for a while and then thought Virus. The only thing had done the day before was install updates for office and visio. Outpost Antivirus had not reported anything and a full scan didn't find anything. Spybot had not reported any major problems with a full scan either, just a few tracking cookies. Just for kicks I turned on Windows defender and did a full scan as well and again nothing. While searching for soutions online I noticed the top of internet explorer had taken on that old XP look. I couldn't get it to go back no matter what I did. Then when comming back from grabbing something to drink I saw my whole screen refresh it happened in like a slpit second but I saw it. The task bar took on the Classic look for just a split second when all my icons on my desktop refreshed. I have since noticed it happen several times and Windows never used to do that. I'm stumped and have done everything except role back the OS which I figure probably wouldn't help anyway. I have attached my Hijackthis log. Please help if you can.

I have a Gateway "Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP3" with 298GB capacity and 214GB free space and it is running slow.

It seems like my computer is constantly revving up, making noises like it does when I'm doing a full virus scan using Vipre.

I keep getting notices that Service Pack 3 can't be updated. I was wondering if this is causing my computer to run slow.

I don't know a lot about computers, but I checked the Task Manager and it shows that the CPU is constantly spiking, because of Firefox and "Plugin-Container.exe."

I read that if you can't update your computer, then you'll have problems. So I don't know if Firefox/Plugin-Container.exe is causing my computer to crawl or if it's because I can't update Service Pack 3. (I also notice that Firefox and Plugin-Container.exe take up a lot of memory usage.)

I read on the Internet about Firefox's plug-ins being a problem but I'm not advanced enough to fix it. Is there any way that I can remedy this or do I have to use a different browser?

Also, why can't I update Service Pack 3?

Thanks!

I'd been struggling with my system freezing up and occasionally throwing the BSOD. The system would boot and run fine for about 2 minutes then it would act like it was being overtaxed, taking 30 seconds or more to respond to screen input. This is a i7 (64bit) processor with 4Gb of RAM and Process Explorer showed no appreciative activity. After hours of safemode tests removing and restoring countless third party services I found a informational error in the event log stating that the Windows Modules Installer had problems starting. So I disabled the WMI service and my system stopped freezing up ran just fine; however now windows Updates won't install. Obviously there is something wrong with the Windows installation subsystem; how do I repair this? I am running Windows 7 Pro

Answer:How to repair the windows update service

Here's the Services console Description of Windows Modules Installer (TrustedInstaller)
" Enables installation, modification, and removal of Windows updates and optional components. If this service is disabled, install or uninstall of Windows updates might fail for this computer. "

It should actually state " ... will fail for this computer " as TrustedInstaller is the Owner of all of the system files and if it's Disabled no updates will install.

With the WMI service still Disabled, open Windows Update in Control Panel.
Click the Change settings link in the left frame.
Click the drop down window under Important updates and set it to " Never check for updates (not recommended)"
Click OK and agree to the UAC prompt.

Now go back to the WMI service and set it's Startup type: to Manual.
How is the system behaving now ?

If the system is not stable now, then do not do any of the below steps. Instead, run the System File Checker since, according to your posted system specs, Service Pack 1 has not been installed yet - How to Repair Windows 7 System Files with System File Checker

If the system is stable, then go here, download, and save the Fixit - How do I reset Windows Update components
When the download completes close all open programs and web browsers.

Hi,

For windows 7 Home premium system, windows update is not running. the error shows as:

"windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running"

Also when trying to enable antivirus. It was not being enabled. But did a complete scan of system and removed 2 Trojans

For this problem, i tried these various solutions, but haven't rectified this issue.

when i checked services.msc file, there are no windows update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) available.

I tried to fix it by using WindowsUpdateDiagnostic, MicrosoftEasyFix50202 and Fix wu tools. but its of no use. I tried to import registry key for wuauserv.reg and bits.reg using PSTools, but there is no impact.

I tried the following update, which gets an error "installer encountered an error 0x80070424 the specified service doesnot exist as a installed service"
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3102810)

I'm unable to rectify the issue by using the solutions provided by microsoft forums. I think this problem had existed since last 6 months, but i have identified it recently.

I have attached the winowsupdate.log file to this thread for reference.

Please do assist in this issue. Awaiting for your response.

My windows update service is not working. When I try to manually update, I get an error window that says "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." There is no error code. I've contacted Microsoft, and here are the steps I've taken per their instructions.
1. Clean boot. Using msconfig, I've disabled all non-microsoft services, then restarted.
2. Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder. I actually wasn't able to do this. I accessed the command prompt as an administrator, and entered this command, "net stop WuAuServ". (w/o quotations). The response I get is, "the service name is invalid."
3. Verify the relevant Windows Update services. When I go to "services.msc", Windows Update is not listed in my services! BITS is set to automatic.
If you have any ideas, please help. I have of course ran malware scans. I have some screen shots, update log, and sys info if you need it. Thanks a lot!

Answer:windows update service disappeared on w7 pro x32

Hello Daniel, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you could download and merge the .reg file below to restore the missing Windows Update (wuauserv) service.

Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7

Hope this helps,

So after many hours turning off services, etc. It seems when the update service is on it will lock the laptop at either the login/welcome screen or shortly after logging in in non safe mode. I tried a WU fixer from majorgeeks as well as renaming the repository directory and nada. Anything else I can do to kind of reset it!? And yes I did the sfc check no issues!

I've hit a wall with this one... I do not have the Windows Update service showing up at all and I've tried all the various bits commands and database rebuild commands, all of them say nothing exists when I try them.

When I try the SURT tool I'm provided with this error:
Installed encountered an error: 0x80070424
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

I have had a few nasty malware viruses in the past, all of which have been removed via only using malware bytes and webroot.

Here is the FSS log I get after scanning:

Answer:Windows Update Service Not Running

You've been hit by what looks like a variant of the ZeroAccess malware.

Your simplest solution now is probably to run the Windows Repair tool - the Services Repair ONLY.
Windows Repair (All In One)

Download the All-in-one tool, and run it - uncheck everything!
Then check ONLY the Services repair option and allow the toll to do its work.

reboot, then run the Farbar Service Scanner again - post the new log and the results of attempting to use Windows Updates.

I know I'm going to be berated for even using windows. That said:

I've got Windows XP home. the automatic update program spams me every time I restart to install KB835732. Not only do I already have this update installed, but windows does not acknowledge that I confirmed the installation every time I do it, so it keeps asking me to install the same update over and over. I have no idea what's causing it.

When I open my laptop lid, it seems like it becomes very sluggish for the next 20-30 minutes. I checked the Task Manager and it turns out that the following service runs at a constant 50% CPU utilization:

Quote:
wuauserv - Windows Update

and only if I stop it things come to normal.

Is there any other way to fix this?

Answer:How to stop Windows Update service from using up too much CPU?

Well you could open Windows Update, click "Change settings" and select "Never check for updates (not recommended)" in the Important updates drop-down list. It would then be up to you to open Windows Update and click "Check for updates" at times more convenient for you. Of course nearly all Windows updates are released on a Tuesday during the first half of each month, but important updates could be released at any time.

It has been observed that Windows Update became much more resource-intensive after Windows 10 was released this summer. Most who complained were running 32-bit Vista: windows update just seems to hang while checking.

It also pops up an error.

"Installer encountered an error: 0xc800247"

I've ran sfc /scannow the these are the results.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Help please.

Answer:Windows Update says service isn't running (When it is)

I suspect I know what the problem is - to confirm it, please run an MGADiag report, and post the results.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

I have tried to access the Windows Update website, but have been unable to. I checked the WinUpdate folder in Program Files and noticed that there were no files in that folder. So when I went back to the Update site, it gave me the option of reinstalling the files, but it wasn't able to install. I tried changing security settings to allow the site to be able to install, but no such luck.

Has anyone else had a similar problem and can provide a solution? Thanks very much in advance!
