Slow computer+slow internet-not sure if virus related

Question: Slow computer+slow internet-not sure if virus related

Hey, basically computer's been a bit slow and tried clearing some stuff and done other things, but still no luck, to make things worse internet's been a lot slow and when using either firefox and internet explorer. For example when going on youtube some videos would freeze in the middle and i would have to reload the page, and sometimes takes ages to load a page.

So here's my DDS log and hopefully the problem can be diagnosed, thank you.

Preferred Solution: Slow computer+slow internet-not sure if virus related

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,

I've been noticing over the past week and a half that my PC has been running a bit slow. I ran my Antivirus (Microsoft Security Essentials) and my Malwarebytes Anti-malware programs. At first it picked up a few viruses/spyware (very little), of which I cleaned them out. I've ran it again, but now they both come up clean but PC is still running slow. I've also just noticed that my CPU is always at 100% capacity. It appears a "svchost.exe" is constantly using up my CPU resource (between 90% - 98%). However, I can never tell what programs are part of this process. I kill this process but it comes back up within a minute. I need to know what's going on. Can somebody help? Here are all my logs.

Thanks,

Steve

Trying to eliminate the possibility of any virus/malware causing the slowdown, but not sure, so I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry. If anyone could give it a look and let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer is running very slow, trying to see if it's virus or hardware related?

You do not appear to be havng malware problems. Your logs are basically clean other than the Babylon and Funmoods junk that Hitman showed. And you should remove these with Hitman. You probably got these because of installing Skype and/or
uTorrentControl2 Toolbar.

Also run the below registry patch to remove some registry entries related to Babylong and Funmoods.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{afdbddaa-5d3f-42ee-b79c-185a7020515b}]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0ECDF796-C2DC-4d79-A620-CCE0C0A66CC9}]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{24E74362-24D4-4489-B1B6-7A92E6E52427}]Click to expand...

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Also double check to make sure the below folders are gone:
C:\Users\Allen\AppData\Local\Babylon
C:\Users\Allen\AppData\Roaming\Babylon

You can also uninstall the below old Sun Java version because you have the new version installed already:

Hi

This has been happening a lot recently, been experiencing a really slow internet browsing on both fire fox and interenet explorer 7 and whenever i'm using firefox it sometimes freezes than works again after a few secs, also having a hard time loading videos on youtube where videos stop loading. Was thinking maybe related to cpu and memory usage, checked windows task manager and see that sometimes have high memory usage like yesterday svchost.exe was running at around 60 000k, ran both spybot and ad-aware but only found cookies related nothing big.

So don't know if memory related problem or infected computer, would really appreciate for someone to have a look at my log and tell me the problem.

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Internet MUCH slower than usual, responses sluggish on- and offline. System fans kick on within 2-3 minutes of startup. I've run all the usuals - McAfee, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, disk cleanup, and chkdsk. Hard boot after all that, then ran HijackThis:

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Hi, my computer has been very very slow and with a very very slow internet for the last week. I have to refresh pages several times for them to load and even when they do start loading then they take minutes. The computer is very slow too (opening files, programs etc.)

Specs:
Windows 7 ultimate 64bit with all the latest updates and legal
Bitdefender internet secuirty
Malwarebytes antymalware

I have scanned my computer with bitdefender and malwarebytes but nothing popped up, I lso scanned mycomp with bitdefender in a linux system that comes with it (tiny core)

Like I state earlier the internet is very slow but when I boot into another OS (Ubuntu 11.10) then the internet is fine but I remember it actually being faster in windows once

I also realised that something has gone wrong with the sound (half the time itworks and half the time it doesn't but also the left speaker in the laptop seems to crackle while playing sounds). This is however probably a hardware fault but it did crop up when my computer got slow and laggy

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

So yeah, I've these problems for the past couple days. My browsers (Opera and Firefox) used to load pages quickly, but now they're painfully slow. Opera lags and freezes often; Firefox doesn't, but it still takes a very long time to load pages.

I'm also getting these occasional "invisible ads," even when I don't have a browser open. I can hear the ads but I can't see them.

Also, I sometimes get redirected to unwanted sites. This mostly happens when I click on a search result in Google.

Here are some things I've done:

-Ran SUPERantispyware (I can post the log(s) if needed)
-Defragged hard drive
-Cleaned cache, cookies, etc. on both browsers

Answer:Slow browser, slow internet, random audio ads: virus?

Hello Tienjt,

Scan your computer again, this time using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti Malware as posted in the links below:-

Download CCleaner to get rid of temp files - it will make the antivirus scans go faster :-)
Download CCleaner 3.20.1750 - FileHippo.com

Download Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) from here:
Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Download the updates for MSE from here:
Install the latest Microsoft Security Essentials definition updates - Get the latest definitions - Microsoft Malware Protection Center

Download malwarebytes from here:
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.62 - FileHippo.com

And the malwarebytes updates from here:

Trying to watch videos on YouTube, Facebook, or any news sites, etc., are completely unwatchable. There is audio and video, though the video lags far behind audio and never seems to catch up. It's pointless to try anymore.

General browsing is equally slow. Sites and links take forever to load. I think I have many viruses that are slowing everything down, including opening .exe files.

Windows XP SP 3

Athlon processor

The computer is custom built- I don't know the brand name.

I can't post a HiJack This log as when I google it to download it, or try to download it from you guys, the internet shuts down. It also runs really slow. I have internet explorer 8 and upgraded the updates as my parents use this computer and when I returned from college there were many to update. I know there must be a virus on here to keep it running slow, shutting down web pages for hijackthis and possibly others. Sometimes when you click on a website link it will take you to a random page also. Thank you for any help and time.

If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding Rist attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program. If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator.Click Continue after reading the disclaimer screen.Leave the drop down box set to default: "List/folders created or modified in the last 1 month (30 days). When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.Save the log file to your desktop and copy/paste the contents into a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here.Important: Be sure to mention that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run.If RSIT did not work, then reply back here.

I was recently infected with the Total Internet Security 2010 virus.... I cleaned it up w/ Malwarebytes but my computer still runs really slow and my internet will freeze. Especially when it's trying to play videos. Things just freeze up. I tried a few scan programs S&D and symantec antivirus and didn't pick up anything new. I wasn't really able to complete running comobofix (even when i re-named the file). I used the DDS file to produce the following:DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Cheng at 22:33:40.76 on Wed 01/20/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1022.449 [GMT -6:00]AV: Symantec Endpoint Protection *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {FB06448E-52B8-493A-90F3-E43226D3305C}============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\ibmpmsvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcsC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exesvchost.exesvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exesvchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exeC:\Program Files\IBM ... Answer:Possible Virus - Help (Computer slow and Internet Freezes)

Haven't been successful to get my computer recovered. Just thought I'd let yall know, I haven't been able to start up my computer in SafeMode. It would crash in a blue screen and say that I might have a possible virus. Still can't run ComboFix without it freezing/stopping. I also see this file wmiprsve.exe pop-up and have seen the name in a few folders. Internet Explorer would freeze after maybe 5-10 min of use.Hope yall can help. Hi all,

My computer has been acting crazily for the past three days. All my internet-related processes are extremely slow:

-Pidgin (AIM messenger program) freezes every minute or so, but remains working after 30 seconds being frozen.
-Mozilla Firefox shuts down after I attempt to click anything on my home page (Yahoo) or type anything into the web browser.
-Internet Explorer just freezes and barely works.
-Opera freezes immediately after opening it.

My computer is just awfully slow in general. Startup time is horrendous, and it takes about 15 minutes for my computer to boot up. I have used "Disk Cleanup", "Disk Defragmenter", Spyware Doctor, Spyware S&D, and BitDefender.

I have also recently had the Win7 Security virus, but I have removed that fully and it has not been on my computer. However, it is only after I removed the virus that my computer has begun to act slow.

I have spent the last couple of days installing new Anti Virus (Avast) and Firewall (Zone Alarm) Found a numbr of viruses and other malware. I did my best at fixing what I could find but would appreciate a second opinion. I tried to follow the "Read and Run Me First Thread" in it's entirety. When I ran the Panda Scan it returned "No Virus Found" and I saw no option to print a report.

Hi The computer  that is slow is a desk top tower. In a home.  it is a E machine.
it has windows 7  professional  with service pack 1
DO KNOW :  I am very new to windows 7 and all it's features.
When I brought this computer home  last Nov. it was lightening fast at everything! so much better than  the windows XP  it replaced, I was thrilled.  yet Now starting in  April 2015  it is as slow  or slower  as my old Windows with XP ever was  ( and partially the reason for saving my  pennies to get this windows 7 computer)...and  now I'm upset. feeling  like I have been taken.

Computer displays the following :
3.8 windows experience index
Intel pentium dual 2.0Ghz  processor
64 Bit

Has Ccleaner installed
has Comodo antivirus and Comodo cleaning essentials installed.
All virus scans  find no infections,  and report that all is well and protected.  ( B/C of the way the computer is operating i'm doubting that and betting there is an infections of some sort)

I Have run Comodo cleaning essentials and  results find no abnormalities or infections.
Have run TFC and JRT  and the computer shows no signs of improvement.
have run rKill  and it  finds  no abnormalities  or infections.
All virus scan results  find no infections.
Windows updates is activated  and  all latest updates have been installed.... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 computer suddenly slow to get on internet, slow to browse websites etc

Hi flywelder Maybe we aren't looking at an infection here. There's tons of reasons why a system can slow down, and not all of them are malware related. Let's try to take a look at this issue under another angle shall we?MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;

I posted this and got a reply to run RSIT. I ran it and worked. I was also told to post the log file:

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. Hello,
My computer and internet is running slow. I have updated version of AVG antivirus and there is no virus. No spyware as well. MY ISP is Shaw (High Speed Internet [not lite nor extremet]). Here is my HJT log. Please advise how to fix the problem.

Please also inform me how to remove enteries from the start up (msconfig). I am talking about the enteries not just the programs that start with the windows. There are lots of enteries that are unchecked and I don't want to even see there. [the unchecked ones do not start with windows, off course].Thanks

Hi RoThiSePh, Our apologies for the delay. If you still require help, please post a new fresh log so I can see if anything has changed. If you have not done so already, please do the initial cleanup steps in the following instructions before posting your new log: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis LogI see a little on there that needs looking into and some of the programs you mention I agree need to be uninstalled. I just need to see what's changed since your post and if you include a list of installed programs I can assist you with that and it will possibly give some insight into removing some malware.Open HijackThis. If you still have the New Users Quickstart screen enabled, click Open Misc Tools Section. If you just have the regular opening screen, click the Config... button then the Misc Tools button. Now click the Open Uninstall Manager button, then the Save List button. Save the list somewhere convenient like My Documents and then the list will open in Notepad. Copy and Paste that list into your next reply to this post then we'll get started.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. 1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line. *********************************************************************Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop. Please close all open programs and internet browsers.Double click on a... Could someone please look at my hijack this log? My computer is running painfully slow, especially the internet. I see two suspicious programs in my task manager: exec.exe & x1exec.exe. I really appreciate it! Thanks!

Hi folks re-posting as per your suggestions http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/587154/tried-all-your-suggestions-for-slow-pc-still-very-slow-i5-laptop/

The indexing did rebuild and I removed the P2P program.
One thing I noticed is that explorer related tasks are very slow. Sometimes when I try to open a folder and view files explorer is stuck. It doesn't freeze and is semi responsive but doesn't display any files and just stuck in trying to load the folder. See image attached. I have to restart the explorer from Task Manager in order to get it running again.

Hi there sorry the notifications about this post have been buried by the mailbox and I forgot to respond.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/590861/slow-browsing-and-very-slow-explorer-and-disk-read-write-related-processes/?p=3837191
To answer your last question. What I meant by sometimes was that, sometimes Windows loads normally without BSOD. Anyway this issues seems to have disappeared now. Laptop runs a little bit faster but not much. Website are still loading very slow (even the major ones so it's not a problem with UE on their end, and loads much faster on my desktop). Explorer folders sometimes don't load icons and menus, preview of media takes ages sometimes causing crashes of the application, applications like skype, xlite and office are very slow and are getting stock/becoming unresponsive.
Thank you for your help.

Answer:Slow browsing and very slow explorer and disk read write related processes cont.

Quick update of things I've noticed.
1. When searching for things on Google after typing the query and pressing enter/clicking search the page is stuck I can see it's loading at the top (Tab spinning circle) and the search page results are blank white, buttons are responsive etc but tit doesn't bring up any results. Then if I press search (enter or click the search button it displays the search results.
2. Sometimes there is a huge delay in typing. You can type a full sentence and it will display the letters/words slowly on the screen (letter by letter steady pace first and sometimes at a fast/semi fast burst of typing) but not at full speed.
3. Sometimes when I open spreadsheets or other documents in office it says that someone is currently editing the file but this is a standalone laptop that is not part of an intranet and there is no one else who is viewing these files apart from me.

Hi, just to outline my problem more, my computer slows down for increments of 30 seconds or more, before returning to normal. At first I thought this was a gaming related issue, as I first encountered it playing a game, where my fps would drop dramatically and become unplayable. In fact, I just had "lag" for lack of a better term, just occur typing this post. I've spent several weeks checking possible fixes, and I can say it doesn't have anything to do with either my OS, Windows 7, or hardware, driver or heating issues. Thanks in advance for the help!

P.S. I was unable to run rootrepeal, because I run a 64-bit OS, so I'm not including a log of it. I can also supply a MBAM log if needed, but it wasn't able to find anything.

Hi,

I followed the instructions in the "Users Self Help Malware Removal Guide" to remove Spyware Quake from my computer.
However I could not find any of the files listed to delete in C:/Windows/system32, even when turning on every option to see hidden files and such.
I do not seem to have the symptoms anymore but find that my computer takes very long to start up and seems a bit slow.
Here is my HijackThis Log... I just want to make sure it is completly gone.

Thanks in Advance,
koss

Hey I recently bought a new computer that is much better than my old one in stats but its not acting like it.

Windows XP
Service Pack 3
Intel Dual Core E5200
2.50GHz
2GB RAM

Now it was running ok to begin with but then the internet started having problems. It kept dropping out or fluctuating in speed and nothing seemed to fix it. It didnt happen on my old system it sat nicely at 54MB/s all the time.

Then the rest of the computer started going slow to start up so i got rid of some start up programs and desktop items which didnt seem to do much. And now ive noticed that when songs are playing in itunes they skip seconds every now and then.

Also when i click for programs to come up after i wait till everything is started up properly i have to wait a minute or two before they open. And burning DVDs has doubled in how long it takes.

Any ideas of what could be wrong, ive scanned for viruses using Avira and spyware using SUPERantispyware, ive cleaned registry using Registry easy and removed all unnecesary crap using CCleaner.

It got suggested that my computer was going slow because of AVG8 so i got rid of it and with got Avira but it slowed up again.

Hello, my computer has been extremely slow on boot and my desktop has been hijacked with a message about changing it to a website. I also have a program called "error fix" showing up on my desktop and I have no idea where it came from. I've run Malware Bytes twice on the computer with numerous problems found. After running it the second time, I got a message saying I needed to run CHKDSK which I ran. Also, my internet is running very slowly and I just got a message that says "A program on your computer has corrupted your default setting for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has reset this sietting to your original search provider, Live.Search (search.live.com). Internet will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providors."

Here is my Hijackthis Log, if you need the MBAM logs, please let me know and I will post those as well.

This is my first time posting a question on bleeping computer. We are so thankful that you are out there to help us and not rip us off. I think my computer is infected. My desktop starts up very slowly, my internet connection is slow (it's slow in pulling up websites and some never come up). I'm getting lots of pop ups (even though pop up blocker is enabled). When I go to open the control panel, a flashlight pops up as if it is looking for it (it eventually does open but it takes a while). I had a problem at one time with a lot of POS.TMP files and followed advice from posts on this site to get rid of them. Well, my current problems started when a friend downloaded a music program. I believe it was called Soundman. When I noticed the computer acting funny, I went into the control panel and deleted it along with some other programs I found (PPC Booster, P2P Max, Ron Tool Adsoftinc, Wyzo, Eco Bar). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hello, i'll be grateful if you could help us with a problem that we are having with our laptops at home. Let me to explain you, my wife have his own laptop at home, as I have mine laptop too, both of the computers share a wi-fi internet conection. I'm not sure of what's going on but the internet conection it's extremely slowly, sometimes when we reboot our laptops there is no internet conection. According to our ISP there's no problem with the internet conection, they said it could be something with the laptops.

Now, It's true that the two laptops are more slowly, specially my wife's laptop, it takes too long for any processes, I always take a look to the running processes and it seems like there are too much process always but I'm not sure of what is good and whats isn't.

I decided to attach The HiJack log from my wife's laptop, maybe with this you could help us to figure out what's going on.

Thanks for your time!

My system has been running slow (especially at start up) but the major problems seem to be related to all my video applications (online Netflix, Veoh, Amazon Unbox, and even just Windows Media Center). When I start up my computer, a few messages have said these applications have crashed or when I use them they time out and generally do not run well. Naturally, I would be very grateful to anyone who may have some help for this, and I'm only guessing that I may have a virus. I run on a Windows 7 Dell.

While trying to use HiJackThis, when I first started to scan it gave me directions on giving the application access to files, but when I followed the directions, another message popped up saying that I was denied write access to hosts file, and I needed to get administration approval to save in a certain file path (system32). Here are my scans:

Windows 7 computer has been "sluggish" for the last few days. The problem is similar with Microsoft IE and with Chrome ... so I do not think it is directly browser.

I am seeing slower than usual Internet access (direct connect to a cable modem) and I see delayed keyboard response. I have used File Manager to check consistent CPU loading but nothing is obvious.

I routinely run Microsoft Security Essentials with Webroot Secure Anywhere.
Webroot Secure Anywhere detected and quarantined ...
c:\users\<name>\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files\low\content.ie5\g1z72o8s\888poker_net[1].exe

I ran through the Read Me First procedure and saved the logs.

Note: CCleaner removed 6.3MB.

Note: TDSSKiller did not detect anything and I didn't see any way to save the report available through the Report link in the upper right hand corner of the screen. All other logs are attached.

Thanks for your assistance.

Answer:Computer Running Slow - Not Browser Related

You are not having malware problems. You are a victim of what you have installed on your PC. You have multiple antivirus programs installed which the Read & Run ME already told you that you should not do. Uninstall either Microsoft Security Essentials or Webroot SecureAnywhere and then reboot and see how things are working. If still having problems, uninstall Wise Care 365 and see how it is after another reboot.

You could also use another GB of memory.

I've noticed my computer has slowed down considerably over the last couple of weeks. I recently found that AVG had placed a file named Trojan horse Generic5IOO in its Virus Vault on 7/12/2007. AVG indicates the file is not "healable." Could this be causing my problem? If so, what can I do?

I run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy pretty regularly.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Some kind of trojan invaded my computer I believe. I ran Symantec and it deleted a bunch of entries but the auto-protect kept popping up to block something labeled Downloader and file "kernel32.exe" I was eventually able to delete it in safe mode after turning off the system restore. But then the auto-protect kept blocking Adware.Webbuying with file name qmlqrib.dll (both of these were in system32 folder according to the log), but there was no file by that name anywhere. I ran Ad-Aware which removed two entries with a level 10 threat assessment named BookedSpace and Win32.TrojanClicker, however the Adware.Webbuying continued to be blocked by Symantec. I then ran Spybot which found and deleted numerous entries and I no longer get auto-protect for Adware.Webbuying. However, I continue to get pop-ups, internet is slower, computer is slower, and it seems to prevent downloads after a certain point in time (haven't made it past 20% of a file from various different sites ranging from 4-20 MB). Who knows what else it is doing; hopefully not downloading my personal data. Please lend me a hand if you can. Thanks. I have included my HijackThis log:

Please help me. I think my computer has a virus or multiple ones. I went through the 5 steps you recommended, but could only run one of the scans (Panda), since the other require IE, and my IE doesn't work. Panda found 8 viruses and 26 instances of Spyware. It disinfected the viruses but didn't do anything with the spyware. I manually went through and deleted all of the files that I could, but I think there must still be something hidden somewhere. I ran other scans, Adaware, Spybot, etc, and they didn't find anything. I'm not sure what else to do. PLEASE HELP!

Answer:Internet Explorer Doesn't Work, Computer is Slow, Virus Scans Not Working

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Not sure how you were able to perform an online scan at Panda without IE, as it requires IE5 or higher.

Hi MajorGeeks,

Just starting this week, I'd say around Monday or Tuesday, my computer has suddenly become Sluggishly slow at times, with constant freezing/lock ups, which happen usually if I'm browsing using Chrome.

Followed the steps in the Read Me and I've attached logs for every program..

All the programs show there is nothing of a threat, but just wanting to make sure there's nothing log wise that scanners may have missed.

If you guys need any further information, please let me know.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Computer is running very slow at times, want to make sure it's not malware related

Re: Computer is running very slow at times, want to make sure it's not malware relate

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your problems may not be malware. Your logs are clean; however you ran scans in safe boot mode which is not what we really want or need. In order to properly evaluate your PC, we need to have the MGtools log from Normal Boot Mode.

Hi,
My laptop was recently the victim of some malware/virus and I can't figure out how to fix it. I've tried the suggested steps to clear it from my system, and have tried running a few anti virus programs while in safe mode. The Dr Web scanner indicated that there was some malware in my dell support system files, which I've attempted to delete . In the past few days, I've deleted some files that are supposedly incosequential (ie Dell connect, etc), but now I am wondering if I deleted a file I shouldn't have. I was going via the advice given on some other forums, regards the neccessity of some of these programs.

I have a Dell inspiron e1705 with Windows Vista (32 bit) .

Some of the symptoms of the problem include:
-no wireless intenet availability (says "the adapter is not connected") - never had a problem previously
- very slow with frequent freezes
-I do not see any obvious resource taken up the memory space in the Windows Task Manager log
-Occasionally, some random tmp files have appeared all of a sudden on my desktop.

Here is the HiJack log file:

Hello, alexismyname
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. Hello all!

I have a friend who consulted me for her computer issues. They are described below. Feel free to ask any questions......it might take a couple of days between replies if there are system specific questions, so bare with me!

1. She uses the internet via cable. At random times, her connection cuts in and out. When it goes out, its usually for just a couple of minutes, sometimes it can be seconds. She has contacted our local provider (TWC = RoadRunner), and they have come out and tested and found no cause. When her computer is connected, it has a fast signal.

I haven't gotten into her computer too deep, tonight was the first time looking at it. She isn't very computer savvy (I barely am), but from what she told me.....there are 2 network cables going in to her computer. I know I need more info on what/where these are from. Apparently she claims Best Buys "Geek Squad" installed one terminal onto her harddrive, and TWC installed another. I can't elaborate/decipher what she was implying, so I will need to get more info before anyone can probably give some help.

2. Her computer is SLOW. Granted it is almost exactly 5 years old we know doesn't help. She just wants to see if this computer is salvagable and/or worth upgrading. I'll post system info when I can get it. I messed around with a few things, the first was doing "Disk Cleanup". It took nearly 5 minutes before Windows prompted a new window asking me what to disc... Her computer is SLOW.Read this topic:Slow Computer?I messed around with a few things, the first was doing "Disk Cleanup". It took nearly 5 minutes before Windows prompted a new window asking me what to discard. There were 4-5 options with over 200,000k worth of crap. I checked them and clicked to remove. I had task manager open, and saw the CPU usage immediately spike to 100%. About 10 minutes later it was locked up......so I cancelled it.Try CCleaner.Just use the Cleaner, not the Issues section.she needs to get an external HD to store her music.Good idea. Also, have her uninstall any programs, that are no longer used. Also, I saw that the IE icon is missing........it has the default "broken" icon for Windows.Have you tried a repair of Internet Explorer? How to Repair Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express in WindowsBetter yet, use Firefox. She has 2-3 spyware programs, and an anti-virus programWhat are the names of the programs, she uses?have her run these online virus scanners:BitDefenderTrendmicro HousecallAlso this online Trojan scanner:TrojanScanI do have a hijackthis file if anyone would like to look over it.Hold off on the HJT log, until you've tried the above steps. You'll probably need to run a new log.

Ok I recently noticed that my computer is taking longer to load and also it lags when running programs. In addition, I noticed that my internet was slow. I use Yahoo DSL.

I defraged my hard drive with Auslogics Disk Defrag and it did not speed anything up. I did a adaware and spybot scan. And it did not help. So I decided to come here.

Following the steps, I ran an activescan and it found only 1 trojan that could explain my slow internet problem (hxxp://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/security-info/about-malware/encyclopedia/overview.aspx?idvirus=143883]). It was removed. I always had IE-SQUAD and Spyware blaster enabled and up to date. And I did my windows update. I am running Win XP SP2, not SP3, since there were a few things my computer cannot do that I need on SP3.

But my computer is still running slow and "locks up" briefly. If anyone can help, I would be very thankful. Thank you!

Hey Everyone,

First off I'm pretty new here I know..........

My problem is that my internet connection is pretty slow on my main computer. It's an older (6 years) Dell. I'm still running XP and IE7. I have Comcast cable and it's connected through a Linksys modem. The problem is that the internet response on this machine is pretty slow. I have a laptop that I use and that is much better. I would figure that my "main" computer would be faster since it has a hard connection, not wireless.

I know that isn't much info so ask away and I do what I can to provide all the info needed.

Thanks!!!!!!

I'm running Windows XP with an AMD Sempron 2.0 ghz Processor with 700MB Ram.

Firefox takes up all this computer power(I know that this is more common with the updated Firefox's but in my case it's still to an extreme). Firefox will stay open after I close it and I will have to use Windows Task Manager to fully close. I've switched to Google Chrome and it is quicker.

Any Java usage slows the computer down incredibly. Even in Chrome it's slow. I can't switch between programs nearly as smoothly as before. Basically everything takes forever now and my computer seems to strain under the workload of what use to be basic usage.

I found two Trojans with Kaspersky Trial scan and I thought that fixed the problem(I eventually got rid of Kaspersky because it was making my slow computer even slower.) Unfortunately I never wrote down their names because my parent dropped me on my head frequently when I was a child.

I've run all the scans and nothing has come up(to my basic and infantile computer knowledge). One problem with the scans was the MGtools would open briefly and the window would only just flash and then dissapear and nothing would run. sorry, if this not the right place please move. I did many google searches cant seem to find the issue Im having, or maybe lack of the right key searches. You guys are my last hope.
I will try to explain my problem as clearly as I can. And so sorry about my bad grammar and spelling, trying to post this asap.

first off give small history of my PC. I bought my PC new Sept 2001. A HP Pavilion with 1.3 ghz, 256ram, and a 55gig hard-drive originally came with WinMe, since then I upgraded to XP. I kept my PC case clean, didn't try to install programs my PC couldn't handle, didn't go to any sites that knew were bad with viruses and such also had Malwareytes/spybot/avast/hijackthis to use, didnt install any toolbars, and tried not to have many programs open at the same time. I basically kept my PC simple with use.

Anyways around June I noticed some odd slowdowns
While playing Winamp and running a torrent with speeds of more than 400+ the audio would become choppy. This also happen when I would open FF, IE or any program while running Winamp, the audio would be choppy.

Extracting 700mb files from Winrar would take around 8mins

Playing Youtube, WMP, of VLC videos would be slow and choppy.

Transferring files from one PC to another over a crossover cable would take much longer. 4gigs of files would take about 20mins or so.

Virus scanners, Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot would also take much longer than usual.

So, about 2 weeks ago while my brother was on Youtube my... Read more

Hello,

So I just recently started to get an extremely slow connection to my high-speed DSL. It
was running fine up until a couple of days ago and I think a virus might be the culprit. My
girlfriends computer is setup right next to mine and her internet is running fine.

Update: Doing speedtests my results were 188kb/s down 237kb/s up and hers were 2770kb/s down and 553kb/s up.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

A few days ago our internet started acting up and stopped working for a day or so. After a day or so it started connecting again however it is so slow that most things don't work. It can take up to 5-10 minutes for a page to load and many wont load at all. We contacted the internet provider who said that the connection was fine but there was something running in the background connecting to loads of other pcs. Anyway we figured out that it was a torrent client which was still connecting even though it wasn't in use and was closed down. The person we phoned said that it was probably this causing the slowness and there might be a virus. Anyway I deleted and removed all the torrent software and made sure it wasn't running anymore and did a virus scan with Avast. It found and removed "BV:Qhost-C [trj]". However the internet is still running incredibly slowly, even more slowly than before if that's possible. Everything else seems to work fine on the pc. Is it likely to be a virus somewhere? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello,I am new to this community, and my computer and internet just started acting very slowly today. As I searched for help online, this website came up. Anyway, my internet and computer are really fast. However, ever since today, it has been really slow. My internet only has a download speed of 2-8 kbs and it takes a few minutes for a webpage to load. I have used ccleaner, and have cleaned out my registry. However it is still too slow. I have scanned with Spybot and Malwarebytes but nothing is infected. I am also unable to update my anti-spyware, virus programs. My avast, spybot, and malwarebytes can not update. So, is my computer infected or is there something wrong with my internet? My router is pretty new, and my computer seems to operate fast. The internet and the inability to update my anti-spyware, viruses are the only problem. Thank youI am currently scanning on avast, and will reply with the results.

Answer:Slow Internet: Virus?

Hello,

I think i have a virus on my computer that is making my internet very slow, i have already contacted my ISP and they say everything is fine on there side. I have tested the internet on an other machine and it seems fine, i have also installed the updated network drivers and this didn't seem to work. It is not slow all the time and when it isn't it's for a very short time. I did have a anti-virus program but i thought it was making it slow so i uninstalled it but it ended up it wasn't. It is not my download speed either i usually get 38Mbps on a good day but when the internet becomes very slow it takes 5 minutes for a page to load up. i have also attached all the files this form seems to need to check if i have a virus. I am on a 64-bit therefore i can't use gmer.

Thanks in advance,
Brman74.

My internet connection is extremely sporadic. It will load pages, but very slowly, often requiring multiple attempts. Even direct downloads sometimes cut out in the middle. I have tried everything I can think of to fix it and nothing has worked.

-Switched ethernet cables
-Switched to wireless (strong signal)
-Updated wireless and LAN drivers
-Ran ping tests and network card diagnostics--all pass
-Connection status window shows packets coming in and out without much stalling
-Manually configured TCP/IP properties, no effect

Some things that make me suspect a virus:

-Other computer on the same router develops connection problems when I sign on
-Microsoft Network Monitor shows dozens of TCP connections even when not surfing the web or downloading. They all seem to involve port 25 and connect to mail servers. Processes making connections include services.exe and <Unknown>. I've never run the program before so I have no idea if this is normal.
-I was recently infected with Internet Security 2010, which brought a load of trojans with it. I thought I got rid of them all. Malwarebytes reports that I still have rootkit.agent but the infected file doesn't exist on the hard drive. SuperAntiSpyware found nothing but tracking cookies. McAfee trial edition found nothing.

So my theory is that some malware is sending spam over the network and drowning out all the packets from Chrome. What information can I post that will make the situation clearer?

Hey,
So i recently posted on the networking forums about my slow internet and i believe it may be because i'm infected. However i'm not entirely sure of this. My internet had randomly started running slow, getting about 2 Mbps on speedtest.net when it usually get's about 6. When i ran a speedtest on safe mode, i got 7 mbps. Also, a couple days ago i ran a computer scan on avast and it came up with 1 infected file. I did remove it and it now says my computer is safe. I also uninstalled my p2p software, but i think i may still have a virus. What steps can i do to remove this virus? I'm not the greatest with computers.

Thanks in advance :)

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Thanks guys, I haven't done this in awhile so please bear with me...

After an older system of mine seemed to suddenly slow down and a current Symantec scan came up with nothing I ran Housecall on my system. Housecall found Adware_aeropopups and Adware_memwatcher before Housecall itself slowed down to nothing and died. I could not use Housecall to clean the malware/spyware cookies. I ran the Java Housecall plug-in; not the ActiveX. I then ran defrag and that helped some for the system so it seemed. However, the internet is stll quite slow on many occasions.

I ran Hijackthis and have pasted the log below along with a few system details. I only see GoogleDesktop in the log below as a potential problem. Please help! Everything else seems normal to my untrained eye. I will try adaware next if it is still free to use.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 and IE 7.0.5730.11
I run Symantec Norton AV and have installed Avast in an effort to access another AV library. I know they will conflict from time to time and will remove one of them later.

Answer:Not Again! Slow PC, Slow Start Up, Slow Outside of Internet

Hello justanotherguy,

You continue to get reinfected because you are still running unpatched XP.

IMPORTANT!:
Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system.) At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it?s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from.

Hello Techspot!!!!

I have had my laptop for nearly 3 years but I wouldn't deem it to be a poor performance laptop. Recently I have been getting slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling, and it is very frustrating!!! I share the BT 3 homehub with good connection speed which was checked and found fine! My housemates laptop has started having the same problem as mine and I really want to fix this issue. The internet, keyboard and scrolling speeds vary everyday but overall are slow performers. I have looked through some of the threads and have seen people posting long threads of code etc :/ Is there anyone out there who has the time and patience to help me fix this problem? It would be most appreciated!!!

Many Thanks

Dan

Answer:Slow Start, Slow When Opening Boxes, Can I Reinstall Xp Without Having To Reintall My Internet

Before taking the major step of reinstalling your OS, try two things first:1. Delete and then re-install MSN Messenger (that will fix your corrupt file)2. Review the Slow Computer Troubleshooting Checklist that can be found here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/44690/slow-computer/Regards,John
