Cannot get windows update or update/download anti-virus updates

Question: Cannot get windows update or update/download anti-virus updates

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

Preferred Solution: Cannot get windows update or update/download anti-virus updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I'm not sure when this all started, but recently I've been having troubles in a very generalized area which has led me to believe I have contracted some kind of virus/rootkit.

When I ran a scan with ESET Antivirus 4, I tried to update the virus definitions and found I couldn't. I then tried to access www.eset.com. Firefox gives me a notification that the connection was terminated. I tried getting malwarebytes anti-malware from the official website, but that has the connection terminated as well. windowsupdate.microsoft.com redirects to google.com, but otherwise I haven't noticed much abnormal behavior. I've ran scans with ESET, Malwarebytes, A-squared, Sophos, and the Super antivirus site was terminated but I intended to try a scan with that one. Here's my hijack this log:

She is running Windows Vista Serv. Pack 1. Any help with this matter will be greatly appreciated.
I also uninstalled her Trend Micro because i couldn't update.

My wife got the ransom.crypt.xxx virus on her laptop. I was able to decrypt all of the files using the Kaspersky tool and I can get malwarbytes anti-malware to update and to run and the scan returns nothing... however, I am still not able to update, scan or install any new anti viruses even after running rkill. i downloaded to a thumb drive and ran rkill, tdsskiller and adwcleaner and they found nothing.

Also, for some reason, there are no restore points before the problem started.

Answer:how to get anti-virus to update/download/scan again?

Just restore a recent backup.

This was a nasty virus. I would attempt to run windows update but it would give me an error code and told me to check my connection. Norton would not update. Most free AV I could download but not update. When I would do any search on Google or MSN, it would redirect. It would also give me a google page does not exist if I went to a windows download update sit. After 2 days of working on this issue and using every AV I could find, I stumbled across a google group addressing this problem. It said to access this website, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Trojan-Remover.shtml This trojan was nasty but the program took about 5 minutes and cleared it. I didn't even have to go into safe mode. If your having this same issue, give this a shot before reinstalling anything, Hope it helps.

Hello,

Firstly thank you for your help - I really do appreciate it.

My HpCompaq laptop is infected with a virus that is blocking multiple anti-spyware software, Vista updates, and even my Kaspersky anti-virus.

1) The virus does not allow me to access websites to download anti-spyware nor access the windows update site.

2) I have downloaded the following programs on another computer, burned on CD and run on my laptop:
- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Installed but does not run
- Spybot - Cannot install as access to the website is blocked during installation
- AVG Anti-Virus trial version - Cannot install due to 0x8007013d - Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys

3) I have managed to run CCleaner and clear out all the temp internet files

Windows update does not download anything. There are 20 important updates. I tried choosing just one of them, the screen displays 'Downloading updates...', but nothing is downloaded. I tried rebooting but this did not work. What could possibly be wrong? I have scanned my laptop with Avast, Malwarebytes, etc & nothing was found. I have had this type of problem before and rebooting solved the problem. Not this time. Any suggestions?

My friends computer was very slow so I took a look at it. Installing and running malwarebytes + microsoft security essentials and it had hundreds of instances of worms, trojans etc.

After scanning with them once and removing them and rescanning them nothing shows up but I still can't download any updates from windows update. It gets stuck at downloading 0kbs/0% progress but downloading things from the webbrowser works fine.

MSE found Trojan:Win32/Bladi!rts in the file c:\program files\Tencent\Adplus\Adplus.dll

And malwarebytes found: worm.KoobFace, trojan.BHO and some other trojans, rogue virusremover and some other stuff.

Hello,
I'm having trouble with windows update on my Vista PC and need some help to get it fixed. If I check for updates, it will find the relevant updates OK but it fails with error 80246008 when it try's to download them.
I have done some research and found that it is throwing this error because my BITS service will not start, now further investigation leads me on to one of it's dependancies that wont start - COM+ Event system. I'm sure it is this COM+ service that is causing my problems. If I try to start it manually it throws up this error: "Windows could not start the COM+ Event system service on local computer. Error 0xc0000096".

I have searched for references to this error but haven't found much yet that relates to my problem.

I hope one of you gurus on here can help me troubleshoot this issue.

Hi I'm running windows 7 Ultimate x64 bit OS and I installed this as an OEM product that I got from eBay. When I first installed the Windows back in March of this year, I could download and install all updates. But since then I can't download and/or install any updates which keeps me worried about my computer's overall condition that might get BSODs and other errors. I ran sfc scan and found no problems. I ran the windows update readiness tool, but it didn't install that update either!! I don't get any errors but I can send you the CBS logs that has text file because the other zipped files are very large files (around 12 MB each) that I can't upload in here. So I attached the CBS text file at the bottom. Please tell me how to fix this problem or connect me with remote network connection if you can so I can resolve this issue as it's very important that my computer can download and install updates, thank you.

Hi,
Installed W7 Home Premium on a single system and for one or another reason I cannot get Windows Update to download updates for other Microsoft products. MS Office University 365, MS Visual Studio Pro 2013 and Microsoft Expression are also installed on this
system.

I click on Find Out More in the Windows Update page and IE 11 opens. It first goes to http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-au and then redirects to http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5
.
Here is a picture of the page:

As you can see there is no change settings button as described at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/change-windows-update-installation-notification#1TC=windows-7 .There is no way I can change settings so updates for other MS products are also downloaded.

Firefox is my default browser; even if I load the link in Firefox I get the same result.
Thanks,
Imran

For several weeks now I haven't been able to download/update Windows updates. I have been working with Microsoft Tech Support (via the telephone)for several days now and we haven't been able to correct the problem(s). My question is... can I use the Windows Installation disk to "fix" any problems my machine is having with the downloads/updates? Is there a "fix" option on the Windows disk and am I at risk in using it? I don't want to lose anything on my desktop because it is the way I want it at this time. Thanks for any responses.

Pop thr oem windows disk in and in bios set it to boot up on the cd. Do the install XP option. Don't worry it will search to see if there is a cureent version of XP on the disk. When it tell you that there is a current version on the disk it will ask you if you would like to do a repair. Do the repair. Don't worry. It looks just like a brand new instal but when it is done all your stuff is still there it's just the OS that has changed. Didn't MS suggest this? Make sure you have the Product Key available as it will ask you for it. Good luck.

I am here because of the final reply I received to this post:

Windows update settings and other questions

I cannot get WU to behave properly. At one point it quit checking my machine for needed updates. I carefully reset it to the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." and now when I shut down I am told "please wait for update 1 of 1 to install.

I ran SFC scannow and encountered no errors.

I will attempt to attach the CBS log zip file

Last night another update installed 'automatically.' This morning when I first booted I had great difficulty gaining control of my machine. I hit a black screen for a while. I can't recall all that I tried but eventually I got to a screen where I could shut down properly and when I rebooted the system ran 'normally.'

I would still like to be able to research an update before I install it, at least know what it might be doing.

thanks

I've recently repaired my OS (yes, as in repaired in boot setup via the CD...) and now Windows Update doesn't seem to work anymore!

Automatic Updates or manual updates, it doesn't seem to make a difference, I have downloaded all the critical/high priority updates from Microsoft Update, but every time I try to install them, the message reads simply 'Some of the updates could not be installed' (ie: ALL of them! - see attached images)

I've scoured Microsoft Update for ANY form of help for this, to no avail, there is no apparent error code to reference! Microsoft Update worked fine, until I experiecned an error with 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services' on shutdown last month, which was rectified by the repair...

Any thoughts?...

You can only update Defender through the UI. I have been having the problem since I started using 10 back in October.

I'm having an odd problem. When I goto the Windows Update site, it scans my computer for updates I require. After choosing from the list I want to download, I start the download process. However, I keep getting the message that download failed for each of the files I try to download.

I can manually download updates by going to the downloads section of the MS site. I was able to use the update site about 6 weeks ago, however I have a feeling that by using AdAware, I might have deleted something inadvertently.

I have no problem downloading from other sites. I have disabled my firewall to see if that was causing the issue, but it didn't help.

Your assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi all!

So, my pc had started downloading updates, and a few minutes later my system hung. Desktop showed on monitor, but mouse didn't move cursor, hitting keys did nothing, including good old alt ctrl del. So I waited a minute to make sure it wouldn't recover, and hit reset. On windows startup, it installed some of the updates it had started downloading before the crash. However when I got into windows it said there were 3 updates ready for download, but whenever I try to download those 3 I get an error: Code 800B0100 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Googling this I saw a suggestion to download and run System Update Readiness Tool (Checksur.exe), which I did, but still got the same error.
So I tried to do a system restore to the day before that crash...still no go.
So I tried downloading the updates manually and install them, but then I get told "The update is not applicable to your computer."

So...pardon my french, but what the hell should I do? I really really really don't want to reinstall windows...

PS: Updates that fail are KB2532531, KB2533623 and KB982018.

This sometimes happens when, for some reason, things are not updated in the right order. There are loads of other reasons but for me this is the most common.

Did you take a look at: Windows Update - Reset

It can help you reset the update history and put in what you want in the order advised.

Sometimes you don't want a specific update. That is when you use this: Windows Update - Uninstall an Update

Hi, I would like to integrate all updates to install image. However, I must select all language of each updates on Windows Updates Catalog each by each. Any idea to download all updates with differance language as easier?

thanks

Answer:download non-english updates from Windows Update Catalog

Hi,
I'm afraid that it is inevitable and you have to tick "Select all" for each update if you want to download all language of Updates. Why do you want to integrate all language updates into an image? if you need additional language user
interface, then you just need language pack added to your image.

Hi,I've run all kinds of scanners so far and still have had no success in getting rid of the spyware, malware, or virus I have!! Whenever I try to go to the MS Update website, IE7 shows the URL as "http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/", however it takes me to the Google (english version) home page. When I try to click on search links in Google after running a search, it takes me to some random ad website on the first click, and if I go back to the search listings and click on the link a second time it will actually go through to the desired website.Further, on trying to go to the Lavasoft updates website, it will not allow me to download the updates. When I click on the link for the download, it takes me to the IE cannot display webpage notification. The link I am trying to download from is: http://dlserver.download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip. I cannot run the internal update options on Spybot or Ad-Aware either as they say they cannot connect to the server. In short, there is something definitely wrong and after running extensive searches and applications of all sorts. I have tried Trend Micro online scanner, Panda Security's online scanner, Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpyDoctor, Microsoft Live Online Scanner, Symantec Antivirus and more. Hi,

I have Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows XP. I am wondering that should I use windoes update to download fixes and uploads or only
install quick fixes from Toshiba support pages? Is there any difference?

I noticed that in Toshiba support site there is no new updates (quick fixes) has been come in this year at all.

I am asking this because I sometime ago Toshiba asked (when I contacted their support) me to use only WLAN updates provided by Toshiba, not Intel updates even if I have Intel WLAN card in my laptop and there was newer driver in Intel's side.

Answer:Should I use Windows update for updates or download Toshiba quick fixes only?

Of course you should keep the Windows updates up to date. At least the urgent ones which close the security holes. You also can read what you update and deselect the unwanted ones, like hardware drivers from MS. But since the quick fixes are mostly security related operating system updates you shouldn't have to care of this, but reading what you get to install there is always a good idea.

You may become problems with new updates, but this is still better than runnin' an operation system with more holes than a swiss cheese.. j/k

Each one downloads its own updates and share with SAME o.s. in the network

Hello, I have an HP a1430n desktop computer. The machine has a D: drive for recovery, etc. I have backed up all my personal data on another hard drive which has been removed for the time being, so any reformating or deleting will not be an issue. Just this morning I wiped the C: drive and re-installed Windows.However...Amazingly I cannot update Windows, or any of my anti-virus or anti-virus programs (Nod32, Malwarebytes, Windows Update website, etc). When I try to go to Windows Update, I get re-directed to google and neither Malwarebytes nor Nod32 has fixed the problem. I have since re-formated the C: drive, re-installed windows, and have not installed Nod32 or Malwarebytes so I'm free and clear to run anything else you might suggest. My best guess is that the virus/malware is buried somewhere on my D: drive, which does have space you can use despite being a recovery drive.Below is my HijackThis log, and thank you ahead for ANY help you can offer**hijackthis.log**Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 1:50:59 PM, on 5/29/2009Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchos... Answer:Cannot update windows, anti-virus, etc

Hi alkusoittow,Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem. Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult. The log seems clean. While it is vial to have the protection of an antivirus program, you should get to Windows update first and install Service Pack 3. We will take a deeper look first to see what is wrong.Make sure Windows firewall in turned on (start => Control Panel => Windows firewall).

Tell me what was the reason you reformatted? Was the computer infected? If yes do you happen to know the type of infection? Could you update Windows before reformatting?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from MajorGeeksDouble Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. Then close it.Please update MBAM manually. To do that download mbam-rules.exe.Double-click mban-rules.exew to run it.Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in M... In ?Windows Update? I have selected the recommended option of ?install updates automatically? and left the timing at the default of ?Every day at 3:AM.? I typically shut down my computer every night, so it is not running at 3AM. After my computer is turned on will I still get the Windows Update downloads? Will they install automatically at some point?
I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit on a Dell XPS 435MT.

Answer:Must computer be turned on at scheduled time for Windows Update to download updates?

Yes your computer needs to be turned on. If it's not, and you don't update manually, it will simply wait until you are powered on at 3am. And, if you are never powered on at 3am, you will never update.

Hi veron1981

I'm DFW and I am going to try and help you with your Malware problem. Please observe the following points and rules while we work:

The clean up process can take time. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear, absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Some of the Logs we ask for can take some time to Analise, so please be patient
This may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
Before we start:
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer.
However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection.

SYMPTOMS
1) Internet Explorer and Firefox both crash as soon as I use them. I seemed to have fixed this problem (so far).
2) When I use a search engine and click on a link for a website, I randomly get routed to an alternate website. This most often happens when I am trying to access a site where I can download an anti-virus program or a website that has a web-based scanner. Most other websites are fine (for example, I can click on links to imdb or fandango and they work just fine).
3) I can't download any updates. This includes the automatic updates you get for Windows, as well as updates for anti-virus programs.
4) I was able to eventually download Spybot in Safe Mode, but the program won't run when I click on it. It automatically crashes. Can't update virus definitions as well.
5) I was able to download AVG. Again, can't update definitions. I am however able to run AVG, and it finds a bunch of cookies that were infected (mostly malware that redirects me to random websites) but other than that, it says "No threats found".

Hello,Need lots of help would be very grateful for any advice and support you could all offer? I am literally tearing my hair out now; I?ve tried Googling for help countless times too and getting nowhere? Long post sorry.I will start at the beginning so you get a better picture of my problem.I have a desktop PC which is running Windows XP Home Edition and I have a 56K modem - BT dialup (I know I should really switch to broadband). On trying to get my PC to run faster I deleted some programs but in doing so I deleted files that I shouldn?t have and made a bit of a balls-up. So using my restore CDs I reinstalled Windows XP which includes service pack 1. I have service pack 2 on CD so installing that was no problem too. With a little help from BT support I also set up a manual internet connection. So far so good.I then spent the best part of a week slowly downloading all the windows security/software updates/SP3 etc. Finally downloaded everything and all was running well and I decided to then install the latest AVG free Anti Virus software and this is when things went wrong.During download the process was terminated and I was unable to install the AVG free Anti Virus software, tired retry and the error message tells me there is now no detectable internet connection. Checked connection and the modem and this is not correct. On checking my Security Center I get the message the security centre is unavailable because is was not started or stopped, I have used services.msc to st... Answer:Windows Update & AVG Anti-Virus & Lost Restore Pts

You are causing your self so many problems plus extra work and of course time by being on a dial up.Unfortunately it may well be necessary to start again but this time being a little better prepared.Do you have access to a PC which has a broadband connection? If so use this site to download and burn to cd SP3 + many of the updates issued this year.click hereAlso download your AVG and with any other software you use, stick it on a USB stick. You can make life easier for yourself by using this site.click hereYou mention your restore disks and problems you are having, cd's do not last for ever and if damage/corruption has occured could be the reason for your problems.

Hi everyone,

Just an fyi regarding yesterday's Microsoft KB2823324 update. For those of you running Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations / Server version 6.0.4.1424 and 6.0.4.1611 you will find if you have installed the updated that you either get the message you have a corrupt database or an invalid license. This will cause Kaspersky to stop working.

For more information follow this link: Update KB2823324 - Kaspersky Lab Forum

Thanks,

Sean

Answer:Kaspersky anti-virus and latest windows update

Also will throw a Blue Screen at you or prompt you with a check disk every time you reboot/cold start. Just uninstall update, reboot and you should be good go. Since the backlash from it, I believe Microsoft has pulled the update.

Thanks for the heads up BSeanD.

I am running a Winows Media Center OS, Pentium IV, 512 MB RAM.
"Windows Update is not activated" - that's what the Windows Security Alert indicates. I can't activate it, it gives me an error in the services window when I attempt to activate it (1058).
I use AVG antivirus. If I try to make a scan it won't work : it stalls at the start, saying "initializing........
I encountered a few pop-ups with ads, and sometimes the explorer quits unexpectedly leaving me with just the plain wallpaper on the desktop.

I followed the 5 steps prior to sending this report. I had a problem though : The PandaScan didn't work on full : at 90% it stalled at a specific "pv.cfexe]" file. I hit cancel and after I confirmed the cancellation of the scan the IE window just went blank and I had to close the task. So I have no Full Scan Report, just a Quick Scan Report (the Quick Scan completed succesfully). No Disinfection happened - not supported for the free scan...

Hello, alpopa
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .

I am running windows xp and I am running into two major problems:

The first problem is that I am trying to update windows microsoft and it won't update. The message that I am getting is:

The following updates were not installed. Update for microsoft XML core services 4.0 service pack 2 (KB973688) security update for microsoft XML core services 4.0 service pack 2 (KB954430)

My second problem is:

I have been trying to install my anti-virus program which is System Suite 12 professional made by a company called Avanquest. Everytime I try to install it the windows installer box keeps popping up trying to install but nothing happens. I keep getting these messages:

System Suite

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'systemsuite msi' in the box below.
c:/programfiles\avanquest\systemsuite\{4AF1AB45-6F47-49F4-B596-F9EE88920CB56}

and this message:

Error 1706 No valid source could be found for product systemsuite. The windows installer cannot continue

This path could not be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'SystemSuite msi' in a folder from which you can install the product System Suite.

Please HELP!

Answer:[SOLVED] Can't update windows and install anti-virus progrm

Are you trying to install Avanquest from a CD or from a Download? If it is a download, the download file is corrupt. Contact Avanquest and have them send you another. If you are downloading from CD, the CD might be dirty or scratched. Clean it off before trying to install. Then open the CD and find the .msi file and double click it to install the product. Or you can ditch that software and use the free Microsoft Security Essentials which is not as bloated and does just as good a job.

As for the Updates, you can download the Stand Alone version of each update instead of the Windows update.

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help as i'm going mad with this problem. I was infected with a virus earlier in the week. Can't remember name but I couldn't open any exe files and it kept saying my system was infected and to buy some anti virus software. I uses tdr killer and malwarebytes to sort this problem.

However something still seems to be lingering. I cannot access most anti virus sites and forums or windows update site. If I go to windows update page it says page not found. If I go to the anti virus sites then I get redirected to generic sites. All other sites and links seem to be working fine. Just seems to want to keep me away from sites where I may find out how to kill it. I thought it may have been confickr and downloaded kasperskys tool for removal but it detected no virus. It is becoming a real inconvenience and I'm guessing it is doing something much more behind the scenes other than just blocking these sites. . Have tried several malware, spyware detectors but without luck so far. Please help

Thanks

Kieran

Answer:Can't access windows update and redirecting anti virus sites.

To add,

I have windows xp sp3, using chrome as main browser but affects IE too. Have found a few people with similar problemds and think I have tried most of suggested solutions including SDFix. Only thing I haven't is combofix as I heard this can be dangerous if not done properly.

Good evening and thanks for taking time to help me out.
I am trying to clean a laptop that has had several users over the last year and seems to be infected.
The first step I took was to reinstall many drivers which seem to been uninstalled. For example I had to reinstall the wireless drives to get online! The SM Bus driver as well as the Bluetooth and some sound drivers also needed to be reinstalled.

The machine had Kaspersky Anti Virus which seems to have expired or perhaps disabled. As I was unable to get Kaspersky to start I removed it and tried to install AVG Anti Virus (Free version) despite my best efforts AVG would not install.
I tried to find a working System Restore point but ?System Restore? was unavliable (the whole System Restore tab did not appear at all). I then went to Windows Updates to try and get any updates but this too seemed to freeze for about an hour.
I tried to run online virus scans at Housecall and Kaspersky but both pages are showing up us unavailable. So I downloaded Firefox (in case IE was the problem) but still no luck with the online virus scans.
I downloaded Spbybot Search and Destroy and after running the clean up I could see System Restore but I still could not install AVG.
I decided to install Comodo Firewall and Anti Virus which thankfully installed without any drama. However I have been unable to update the Anti Virus ? it keeps stalling at 30%.
Please give me some advice on what you would recommend.
Below I have pasted my DDS... Read more

Task manager will not work, anti-virus is automatically disabled and will not enable, windows update will not update at all and I have noticed many "file missing" notes in hijackthis logs that previously were not missing. Please help! I use my computer for work and currently cannot rely on it in the state it is in. This problem just started and I will need it this coming week for work use. What's going on?? Thanks in advance!! Here are the logs, also Attach.txt has been attached.

The computer is apparently infected, but by what and how do I fix it? I tried to shutdown and it will not even do that, I have to force it to turn off.

When I try to do windows update it just keeps saying searching for update, even if I leave it scanning for a day and a half, and if I try to do a Norton anti-virus patch application the computer says applying patch application for up to a day, by then I'm tiered of waiting, and I end up having to turn it off manually because I can't even get Ctrl, Alt, Delete to work. Someone, not from this site, tried to help me and said I had a virus called the Zeus Trojan and wanted to charge me money to fix it, but I don't know if  I believe them, cause they just called me up out of the blue and said I had it after doing one scan, and I not even sure how much I can trust them. Unlike bleeping computer I have experience working with all of you, and I trust your work.

Windows XP (SP3).Last night everything was fine. The AVG Free icon was where it should be at the bottom of the screen. Tonight when I turned it on, the AVG icon was gone and there is a red shield shaped icon with an "X" in the center. When I clicked the shield, it goes to the Security Center. Here it states the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition may be out of date. When I then clicked recommendations, it suggests I update the virus protection program. The Security Center shows "Automatic Updates" already chosen, but it's a Windows icon, not AVG. In "Add or Remove Programs" it shows AVG Protection installed, version 2016.121.7859. I thought I had AVG Free 2014. Also, in Add/Remove programs, there is a change and a remove buttton. I tried clicking the change button and it brought up an VG installation page. I stopped the installation because it AVG is already installed. How can I update AVG? As I mentioned, the usual AVG icon is gone from the screen, replaced by the shield.

I am at my wits end with this thing. For the past week I have been researching and applying possible fixes to get rid of the problem and make it go away but it proves to be a persistence one. Every time I try to access Windows Update it will redirect me to www.msn.com. In addition, a lot of the anti-spyware/adware I tried to install would not update so I have to do them manually. This included ad-aware, which I asked a friend over messenger to download the most current definition so I can update it manually (I could access the lavasoft website alright, but when I try to download the latest definitions, it redirect me to a different page). I did try to restore my computer to the original manufactured version but it did not solve the problem. I ran Ad-aware and spybot on my computer until they runs clean (both in safe mode and normal mode with restore disabled). I also use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, which I must have done over 20 runs >.< Anways, sometimes it comes up clean and sometimes it comes back with the following again:Registry Data Items Infected:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DhcpNameServer (Trojan.DNSChanger) -> Data: 85.255.114.35 85.255.112.79 1.2.3.4 -> No action taken.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{7399b5d5-4309-474a-8d48-ce0fb03498e5}\DhcpNameServer (Trojan.DNSChanger) -> Data: 85.2... This thread can be closed. I resolved the issue. It wasn't my computer at fault but the router. I became suspicious when every single computers in the house exhibit the same behavior. So to test it out, I use one computer to hard-wire to the internet without the router and I was able to access the windows update page without any problems. Whatever someone did to my router, I have to revert it back to the original manufactured version and afterward, everything ran smooth again. All of my virus software, anti-spyware/adware software are able to update without any problems now. Thanks everyone.

I have gotten some very stubborn malware that I can't find with my scans (avg, spybot, pctools etc.). I really don't want to have to rebuild this machine unless last resort type thing.

Here are the symptoms:

Google links hijacked
Can't get to windows update website
can't download avg virus update automatically - have to do so manually
can't run cmd.exe, regedit, notepad doesn't seem to work and various other executables.

Right now I"m running a full scan with spyware doctor..............and waiting on results. as soon as that's done I'll post the highjack this information.........

Here is a dump from regedit (where I changed the executable to red3edit and did an export - per another thread).......

one thing I saw that was curious is this jsxx.jpa...........

I have been trying for weeks to clean this virus. I have installed various anti-malware but I am blocked from updating. ?Spybot S,D; Ad-Aware; SuperAntiSpyware; Malwarebytes?.

Running XP pro, 1 Gbyte, 500 Gbyte HD, ZoneAlarm, Symantec Antivirus, Ad-Aware
I have Symantec Antivirus Corporate. It says it updates but acts odd when updating,? looking for the same files twice before downloading?.
I have IE and Opera. IE will not open windows update page.
I have an XP boot cd SP1, but it would be a large pain to reload and update.
I have a clean laptop ?XP Home? that I can use to download and copy files with WiFi.
Can you help?
Thanks

I keep getting notifications that Windows cannot update successfully along with windows defender. I'm getting error code 802440019 and I've tried to update manually from the Microsoft website but I can't get the page to load and open up. I'm also having trouble getting my PC tools anti-virus software to update. I'm thinking this might be a firewall problem or something like that. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Answer:Problems updating with (Windows Update, Defender and PC Tools Anti-Virus)

I just looked up your error code and it says object cannot be found, so yes it could be a firewall setting, depending on how you set it up, but not likely. Do you have automatic updates turned on, and do they download and just not install?

Read your first thread in Malware Removal, and in that thread you mentioned having McCaffee for an antivirus app, and now you have PC Tools. Did you remove McCaffee with their removal tool, and were you using a stand alone app or a suite? What are you presently using for a firewall? Also noticed that Symantec was mentioned. What products from Norton/Symantec did you use and how were they removed? Sorry for all the questions, but the answers may be helpful.

Hi,

Answer:Cant browse to anti-virus sites or windows update -server 2003

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
If you cannot seem to login to an infected user acco... Read more

PCs running Avast anti-virus left bricked after new Windows updateHordes of users using Avast Anti Virus software have found that their PCs, especially those running Windows 8 and 8.1, grind to a halt after they applied both Microsofts recent KB3000850 update and Avasts latest automatic updates...Avast has been hard at work trying to figure out why the combinations of a recent update of Windows & Avasts own update was causing machines running their software to break down completely. An update in the above Techworm article refers to this avast topic...Lastest Windows Update Problems which indicates member pk has advised a patch has been released.pk on November 20, 2014, 09:13:37 PMWe have been able to simulate the problem in our lab and I think we fixed this issue. This Windows updates calls new memory related functions which are not fully compatible with avast. We'll prepare EmUpdate with the patched driver tomorrow morning (it means, all & new avast installations should be patched immediately, that's how it works). Thanks to NickAu1 and the MVP [mvpsectalk] channel for the heads up.

Answer:PCs running Avast anti-virus left bricked after new Windows update

Glad that I removed Avast from my 8.1 Pro install when Grinler posted the 6 month BitDefender promo.

If not, mine may have been a casualty also. That was also the last Avast install I had, the reasoning beyond the scope of this Topic.

Thanks for the creation of this Topic.  Avast is still, despite starting to earn a bad reputation in some respects, quite popular with many & a top Free choice. Consumers needs to be aware of these things, and if it weren't for these forums, many would be clueless until it's too late.

Hello,

After viewing some great tech support on your forum today that looked like a similar problems I am having, I decided to join the site in hopes of getting the same help.

I went ahead and made a log1, log and info files via that .bat file mentioned in someone elses topic but I also read that I'm not suppose to post any of that until asked. Sooo... I'll wait. :0)

Problems? Well, Avast seems to have more more traces off the viruses I mentioned in the description however I am still unable to update any malware/spyware protection software in order to run it on this laptop; moreover I am unable to get to the windows update page to try to update the computer... the owner of this laptop said they received an update from windows about a month ago.

When I click on the windows update from my programs files, I get directed to google search instead. :0( Before running the avast(avg was installed before but stopped responding) I would get directed to a depression website when trying to type in microsoft.com

Pleaaaaaaaaaaassseee send help.

I'm on windows xp 2002 home edition service pack 3. Thank you

Answer:Windows updates shows google search instead, can't update any spyware, malware software, can't download/install programs...

As no logs have been posted, I am shifting this topic from the specialized HiJack This forum to the Am I Infected forum.==>PLEASE DO NOT NOW POST LOGS<== unless a log is specifically requested.

Hi,
I have Windows 7.  I recently acquired a virus and when I ran my TELUS Securities Service (TSS) Scan, it starts and then becomes unresponsive? and the circle thing just goes around and around and seems to freeze up the computer and I shut it down with the on/off button.  I restarted in Safe Mode and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (already on my computer) and it detected rootkits, and Trojan?  I ran it a second time and it detected a couple more things.  Afterward, I tried to run my TSS Scan and it did the same thing as I mentioned already.   I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again, and it doesn't detect anything.   I am unable to update Windows - I get this message 'Code 80246008 Windows Update encountered an unknown error'.  I can't get to my Windows Firewalls settings, I get this message 'Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.  Error Code 0x80070424'.  I can't download any 'tools' - I click download, then run, and then I get an error message saying 'whatever tool (ie. dds.com) contains a virus and was deleted'.

If I click on the flag down in the taskbar, Solve PC issues: Turn on Windows Security Center service (important) - when I click on it, I get an error message ' Windows Security Service service can't be started'.

Can you help?

Thanks

I run Windows 7 Professional and last Tuesday when there was Windows Update was when things started to go odd. First the anti-virus and Windows Defender kept shutting off because the updates were installing, but one of the updates couldn't install. So it would try again a few hours later. I finally rebooted thinking that would make the update take place. When rebooting it said it was doing the updates and after that it would reboot (was on the shut down screen). When I booted back up later there was still one update that needed to be installed (an important one it said) but when I tried to install it it had trouble and said the update failed. I also noticed that my downloads in my browsers were not working (it would remove the download as soon as it finished .. tried with 3 browsers but it seems unrelated as others are having this issue just recently as well). I rebooted again last night thinking it might update then but this time it didn't. I booted the computer after I had it off all last night and that one update still needs to update and the anti-virus now can't be found and Window Defender was not enabled but I reenabled it and that is running. The problem is I can't just download an anti-virus and install it as my browser still won't download. So now I am typing this without any anti-virus contemplating going to the store to buy ESET or Bit Defender or something. I was using Windows Security Essentials (that is why it could possibly be related to the... Read more

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page. Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current versionRead the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs. The Express scan will automatically begin.

Hello,
I got infected on 20 April ( last auto-update date from Bitdefender IS 2009) with something really nasty ! What does:
- doesn't let me access any known antivirus WEB sites
- block updates of Bitdefender and your tools ( I had to update them manually )
- Windowsupdate redirected to fake Google page

Bitdefender complain a lot about infections with Trojan.Heur.VB.xxxxxx ( some random numbers ). Even scan with BD in Safe Mode didn't resolved anything !

Some details related to logs:
- SuperAntySpayware run for several hours and reported some infections, most of them cleaned
- after that I run BD in Safe Mode, over the night and removed some other infections ( log not attached here )
- then MAMB ! After installation, I couldn't run because BD was moving mbam.exe to quarantine ( infected with Trojan.Heur.VB.xxxxx). I had to install it on my notebook, rename the mbam.exe to mbam.bat, copy on CD-RW , copy on installation directory from infected PC and start it. Run first time, removed some infections, reboot then run again
- Combofix - couldn't run, with BD antivirus disabled . I had same approach - renamed to Combofix.bat and start. After small loading bar progress, BD just pop-up ( still disabled !! ) and after short time an error window pop-up ( see attached image )
- MGtool - see log - I had to disable BD to allow running

I hope you can give me a hint here !
Thanks !

Answer:DNS changer virus - fail to update antivirus or windows updates

Welcome to Major Geeks!

I can see the reason for your problems. Your logs show that your Windows Operating system files have become infected and there is no known reliable fix for this. In addition there are many many other infected files. We could spend a lot of time trying to remove this infection, but odds are that it will not work because the nature of the infection has so many executable system files infected that as soon as we fix one file, other files that are infected will almost immediately or upon the next reboot, just reinfect the files. In addition, your PC would still basically be unreliable/untrustworthy even if we manage to fix the infected files that we can see since there could be many more that we are not seeing.

The safest thing for you to do is backup your personal data immediately since your PC could possible become unbootable at any point in time. Do not back up any executable files. This includes programs that you have downloaded since any of them could be infected.

Once you backup, you need to delete all partitions, repartition, format partitions and reinstall Windows.

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

My internet data is limited to 1GB/day. Although Microsoft providing Windows 10 FCU iso and its link valid for 24 hours only, unfortunately i can't proceed with that one.
Now i found esd file to update windows 10 FCU from CU. Here is the link, [link redacted]
It it good download from that site. Thank you in advance..

Answer:Is it safer to download ESD file to update to Windows 10 Fall creators update

What kind of trouble are you having downloading the link from Microsoft?
I deleted the link because it's not a good idea to download the link from a third party when Microsoft itself publishes the files. It's extremely difficult to know for sure if any third party is adding malware or something else into the files.

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help
Thanks

What???

That makes zero sense.

one thing at a time.

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

Do you have license?

One license = 1 machine.
1 machine = 1 license.

I'm currently on holiday and am connected through an expensive 3G modem plan. Whenever I try to connect, Windows update starts to download files. Every now and then I need to update MSE virus defs but Windows update downloads files GRR! What do I do about this pest? I just disabled the windows update service which obviously prevented me from downloading MSE defs

Answer:How to stop Windows update from downloading updates when I update MSE

Have you tried setting Windows Update to not Download updates?
You could also set it to not check for updates while you are on holiday.
For MSE definitions, open MSE and update from there.

i upgraded from win 7 to win 10 in early august. no problems. i've been installing all updates since then and installed updates always showed status of updates. after installing fall update i noticed my update history was erased and any updates since, like defender definition files, don't appear in the list. only one update is listed: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3103688) installed on 11/14/2015.

Answer:Windows 10 fall update erased the Windows Update history plus new installed updates don't appear. What do I do?

I have exactly the same problem; no update history except the flash one.

Hello Everyone,

I did a clean install and on first use of Windows update the updates for some reason we're downloading and installing at a slow pace which I didn't recall in the past. Not sure if I'm having an issue on my end or not if it is on the side of Microsoft. Any fixes or solutions you might recommend I would appreciate it. Here is some nfo below.

Answer:After clean install, windows update slow to download install updates

I always keep the current cumulative update off line installer on hand and install it before going online. Also remember it is not just Windows updates you are also getting STORE updates in the background.

There are two critical updates available, 10 optional including a BIOS update, and System Update stops working and gives me the message "1 update failed to download and install."  Doesn't matter which update I try, same message.  I don't want to have to download all of these separately from the support site.  Does anyone have any experience with this error?  Thank you

Not sure why I didn't think of it, but have installed the stand alone System Update app and the critical updates installed, rebooted and success.

I just did a FRESH install of WIN7 on a new partition on my hard drive which has 2 other partitions with separate systems. I am having difficulties getting the WINDOWS UPDATE to work correctly to bring this FRESH install current. Attached is my CBS log that is compressed.

I already downloaded the "SYSTEM UPDATE READINESS" tool: Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86. It is currently running & searching for updates which I doubt will find any if nothing has been downloaded. I have also downloaded : "MS Fix It" http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683 in aggressive mode. I have not tried this yet. I am waiting for the READINESS tool to complete its job.

Is there anything in my CBS log that indicates problems? What else should I try?

Appreciate any assistance

Question: ANTI VIRUS UPDATE

How do I correct the date of my Quick heal anti virus ,i update it daily but the date is showing yesterday's date

Answer:ANTI VIRUS UPDATE

Although you may look for updates each day, surely there must be days when there is no update - so the date would remain as whatever the date was when the antivirus was actually last updated (rather than the day on which it looked for an update)?
