I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

It takes forever to pull up Interent Explorer... and still everything is very slow in terms of reaction time to my clicking/typing. If I leave my computer on overnight, it takes a few minutes it seems to "warm up" once I try to access an application.

Any suggestions? I know this is a vague description. Thanks.

Computer is painfully slow and no idea how to fix it as what i've tried isn't worked. Scanned with MSE, Malwarebytes, and Super Antispyware. SAS found several things and removed them, but the problem hasn't been corrected. It was the only scanner to actually detect anything. Also, whenever I boot into Windows, I can never click on the start menu. I have to stop explorer.exe from running and reopen it. This process called HelpPane.exe always starts up and the Help window opens up. I did all of these scans from within Safe-Mode and offline. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Running Windows 7 Professional. Takes forever to get going. simple operations take 3 or 4 minutes. I see "not responding" in my sleep. Large sheets get stuck on 93% and dont open. Please advise and thank you.

Hi, I really hope you can help me out before I look into wiping my computer and starting from scratch.

A few weeks ago I was infected by something or other which placed a big blue infection warning on my desktop and kept offering anti-virus software for download. I had, and still have, AVG free and Malwarebytes. I noticed they hadn't been updating at all - may be my fault or something got in and switched off updates, I don't know. Anyway, I manually updated and ran both. After removing what they found the big blue warning remained and I had no access to change my desktop image - I assumed it was just a residual image. This seemed to resolve itself - until now I'm looking at a half black desktop screen.

Other issues remain when using Google in IE8 - results appear OK, but most of them re-route me to apparantly random sites until, maybe, the 4th time of trying. Right now, my computer is starting up very slowly and web-pages are tending to load very slowly. Since this has seemed to be a progressive slow-down, I thought of restoring but that doesn't seem to function. Also the de-fragment program doesn't work.

These are just the issues I've noticed in general use. I've removed a lot of files - music, photos etc - to free things up a bit but, obviously the problem is bigger. Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.

My computer is painfully slow on the internet. The rest of the computer functions are fine. A year ago I reinstalled Win XP, and never reinstalled any antivirus or firewall software on it, in a desperate attempt to make the computer surf faster. I know, dumb. Well, I've finally woken up and installed AVG Antivirus as well as ZoneAlarm for Firewall protection. These were installed today, so any issues are not due to slipping past these programs.

Once again, computer is painfully slow when on the internet. Can somebody please help me save my pc so I don't have to get a new one.......

I knew I had some malware/spyware problems since everytime I ran my spyware removal, I always had the same issues that were fixed time after time, so yesterday I did a thorough clean of my computer following all instructions within the Read Me First thread. Today, trying to use my computer, it is still EXTREMELY slow. It almost seems like its gotten even slower since I performed the clean yesterday. I dont know if there is still some sort of spyware or malware within my computer or if its something else, but if someone could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Just let me know what kind of logs I need to run or post or if there is anything else I can try and I'll do it, but this is really frustrating trying to do anything and having to wait at least a minute everytime I try to open something, click on something, etc. Thanks!

As you have mentioned you read the Read Me First thread, it has the info you need on which logs to post but these below are the ones needed, the read me while will clean up most malware and junk, it doesnt remove all malware, similar to many different malware scanners will find and remove some malware btu doesnt get all of it, which is why many times the logs requested are needed in which one of our experts will look at and post some manual removal instructions for the remaining bits.



When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
HijackThis

NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

This is my first posting to tech guys and I hope I'm in the right category. Here goes. I have a dell 8200 1.8gig with 256 ram that is running painfully slow for the time I start it up. It take minutes to transfer from page to page. (not only when i'm on the INTERNET, but when I'm moving around in the computer)

I'm running Norton anti virus 2003. my hard drive has 18 GB free and memory has 874MB free.

I also have kazaa downloaded with about 1200 songs...is this a problem.

I installed and run spy bot . Is this good software?

One question regaurding spy bot. after I run search and destroy how do I save the cookies that will allow me to keep my user name and password for sites like yours?

I would appreciate and advise.

A couple of months ago we took our computer in to get it reformatted and cleaned because it was running very slowly - taking more than five minutes to start up, any music we played was distorted, programs were slow to open, etc. When we got it back, everything ran beautifully - startup took seconds, programs opened quickly, music played clearly. The repair guy wasn't very clear about what had been wrong. He said we had "a virus" when asked, but wasn't specific about what virus it was.

Anyway, a few weeks after we got it back, it started running slowly again. It now takes well over five minutes to start up, it takes almost 15 seconds for Firefox to load completely, and music plays unevenly. My partner likes to download music from Soulseek and we're thinking that maybe we picked something up that way, but when we run AVG, it doesn't find anything. It says that there's a "change:" C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll.

I tried to follow all the steps in your Five Step process, but was unable to complete the Panda scan. It just stalls, or sometimes I get a generic error message from Panda. Also, we have the Windows Service Pack 2, so I didn't update the operating system. So here's the DSS log. Any help would be most appreciated!!

Before I attempt a clean install of the system (probably over my head), I would like to post a Hijack of my system to see if it is somehow salvageable. There are programs on this computer that have never been used as well as a lot of junk that was added by Kazaa and BearShear. We actually only use about a third of the stuff that on here. UPDATED INFO: I added a 1 GB Ram Stick. Seems to run much better, now. I ran Eset, AVG, and MBAM, again. All came back clean. I then went into each of the 4 user profiles to run CCleaner. that made me think....I wonder if MBAM scans ALL of the users files. So, I decided to run a quick scan on user LIZ: wouldn't you know, it found 3 items:

My big question is: Do I have to run all of these scans (eset, avg, mbam) on a PER USER basis?

I recently installed a new hard drive and the problem has persisted ever since. I suspect it's all the programs that start up when I log on thats slowing me down, but for whatever reason my computer won't allow me to pick and choose the programs I want to startup when I got to msconfig/run, even though my account is administrative. I've already defragged my hard drives and removed unnecessary programs but it's stil entirely too slow. My internet connection seems fine but my browsers and all forms of streaming are still very slow. I don't know what steps to take from here. My computer has been running painfully slow for awhile. Browsers take forever to come up and I often have to end task them because they just freeze up. I could not even run gmer. The first time I tried it froze up after 4hours. The second time I ran it, it took more than 10 hours and then froze when I tried to save.

Hello,

My friend has a computer that takes very long to start up, and very long to load programs. I've run a Malware scan, which found and fixed 12 problems. I can't seem to find the log for it anywhere on the computer, even though I know I saved it. It fixed Broken.OpenCommand; Adaware.PopCap, GameVance, MyWay, & Hotbar; and Trogen.Agent issues, however.

I ran a HJT, then deleted a lot of startup and internet files they did not use. I also tried deleting all references to Norton/Symantec, as they deleted that from their computer and then installed MacAfee. However, still lots of problems. I've included the before and after HJT logs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My machine's slowed to a crawl, can anyone provide any tips for resuscitation? I've tried as much as my knowledge allows, defrag, disk cleanup, Ccleaner, SAS and MWB scans and a full workout with my Avast Free, all to know avail. I've seen a few free so-called clean up programmes online, but unsure if they're trustworthy. I'm always reluctant when it comes to removing things as my knowledge is limited. A little bit of info:

I have 3 computers, one desktop 2 laptops. All, up until around a week ago worked fine, but suddenly, just one of them has suddenly experienced painfully slow internet!

I have not moved the router, nor have I moved the receiver until after this occured, to try and resolve the problem.

The reciever is sitting ON TOP of the router, so interference could not be the problem, I assume.

We have not moved anything around as far as phones and microwaves etc go.
I have got the wireless router hardwired into mmy computer as well, and I can not tell, because it is so miniscule, but I think that may have made it a tiny bit faster.

I am usuing a WRT350n linksys modem, if thats any help.

The problem does not seem to be the internet speed, but more the time it takes to open a webpage. I could click a link and wait 5 minutes before anything happens, and then suddenly, it will work fine, unless I am watching a video, then the video will go at about dial up speed.

My computer was booting and running fine, than all of a sudden, it started to take about 2 minutes to boot up, instead of the normal 30 seconds. Now, it takes LITERALLY 10 minutes to boot up.

I had this problem about 3 months back...same symptoms. I backed up everything and reformatted my system and it went back to working fine again.

I'd really like to avoid reformatting yet again if I don't have to.

I have defragged, run adaware/spybot and did a full system scan with AVG Virus scanner. Everything has come up clean.

Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

I was attempting to download a podcast on my Toshiba Satellite and was told i needed to update adobe....i think it was adobe, i wasn't paying much attention.
Following that the computer froze and could not be turned off unless i used the power button.
Then every time i turned it on it would be incredibly slow. Then when i attempted to press any button it would freeze.
I then disabled anything that wasn't essential at start up and this improved it slightly.
It will perform very basic functions but painfully slowly and many programs appear to much for it and it freezes.
It connects to the internet but Firefox soon stops responding.
One time it appeared to be working much better then crashed to blue screen.

It appears to work fine in safe mode.

Hi there,

I read the rules but cannot get anything to function on my PC.

A quick description:
Used the computer and everything was fine. The next day IE would not launch and the programs that did work were taking forever to launch...for example, if I click on Control Panel to open it, it will take 7-10 minutes to open. It does this for any program I try to run, though IE will not open no matter what. As long as it took, I did run Webroot and there were no issues found (at least with that program) and I also did a system restore to 3 days prior to the problem surfacing. Nothing has worked--the computer is still taking forever to launch any programs and IE will still not load. Along with Webroot the computer has Windows Defender. That tandem has never created a problem in the past--I have had this PC since new and for about 2 years.

I tried running Windows in Safe Mode and it is still the same. Is there anything I can try to load via a thumb drive to see if I can analyze/fix? I do OK with following instructions but am not computer savvy.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Bump.

Really stuck on this one. I got the computer to respond (sort of) in safe mode and ran the rkill and then malewarebytes just to see if that would help. Rkill showed no issues, malewarebytes found some items, asked to reboot and then when the reboot happened there was no improvement at all.

Your problems are not due to malware and as such you should be posting in the Software Forum. I could give you a few tips
(but you may not like them) but first you will have to download and use the proper version of MGtools from the READ & RUN ME. You did not download the current version which you must always do when running the READ ME. Run the current version and attach a new MGlogs.zip file.

Also why did you run ComboFix more than once?

dear tech,

This year my PC has slowed down considerably to the extent now that it takes at least 20mins to boot up and even opening up "my documents" takes about 2mins. I have spysweeper and trend micro for protection and regcure for registry file cleanup. Every noiw and again I use CCLeaner and de-fragment regularly to no avail. Spysweeper recently picked up LDPinch trojan and quarantined it. I have read other threads and paste in the Hijack file for your perusal. Your help would be much appreciated. Donation promised

Hi everyone thanks in advance for your help with this Compaq Presario V6000 32 Bit Running Windows Vista. My grandma's laptop is painfully slow and she was having issues with pop ups. I have run all scans but the comp is still very slow. I can't open google chrome or anything for that matter. in normal mode, I had to run all scans in safe mode. Also could not save the log file from Malwarebytes as I couldn't get the button to show in safe mode as the window is to big. However this is what it found:

My computer has been running painfully slow for awhile. Browsers take forever to come up and I often have to end task them because they just freeze up. I've already posted in the virus/spyware removal for this issue and have been cleared of malware so they said I should try this forum. Thanks!

I hope that all is well. I have already run the HiJackLog and will post it below. Here is a brief description to what is happening to my computer.

1. It all started when I accidentally installed my Office 2003 Small Business Software, that I thought came with the computer, onto my Sony Vaio. The reason for this error was because I was trying to import contacts from address book to my gmail account and it said I needed to reinstall the disc so all of the files would be there??? Unfortunately, it was the wrong disc which came with my previous computer. I have the MS Office XP Media Edition 5.0 on my Sony Vaio. That pretty much ruined everything. Everytime I went to use a sysytem restore point it would come back unsuccessful.
(I recently downloaded the Trial Offer - Microsoft Office 2007 Standard addition with Outlook 2007 - so I could work on the computer. I'm in the process of buying this software.)
2. While I'm typing in this text, there is a long delay before the letters pop-up. I am a horrible typist so for that too happen is bad.
3. Firefox, Outlook, etc take at least 10 minutes to start and it sometimes crashes.
4. When I reboot my computer it takes forever to load and seems like it's not even running.

If you need additionnal information or a better description of what happened let me know. My business is suffering...

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users

Dear Majorgeeks:

My computer has been painfully slow for weeks even though I have Norton Antivirus. I followed your instructions and ran Spybot, CCleaner, Counterspy, Bitdefender, Panda, GetRunkey, Shownew and HJT.

I am working with Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6.0, 512MB. Please advise.

Hi there,Over the past few weeks my computer has majorly slowed down and frequently freezes. I keep getting a message from AOL Spy Zapper about a file it has blocked which had never come up before, although I don't remember the name of the file and it hasn't come back for a while so I cant post it on here. I have a Compaq Presario running windows XP home edition that is several years old, and over the last six months it has gotten slower and slower, both online and trying to browse my files. For online I use the lastest version of Firefox, downloaded just a day or two and it's still slow. Often programs will freeze, say (not responding), and I have to hold the power key and completely restart the computer. In these cases my cursor still appears on the screen and moves, but doesn't do anything when I click stuff. I've run spybot and AVG scans and they come up with nothing. Please advise with what other information I need to post.

My computer has really been slowing down lately, boot time is pretty much the same as usual, not great, but reasonable. The real problems happen a few minutes after I log in and am trying to run some programs, or view documents. This is especially the case when connected to the internet.
Please help!! maybe I'm running too many processes that don't need to be there?

This is a friend's computer (XP SP2, Pentium 1.6 GHz, 256 MB RAM). The computer was extremely slow, and I have done the following:
- Ran adaware and spybot, found 635 (yes, 635) problem files or entries;
- Very little space on C drive; deleted unnecessary files, and moved some to CD to get about 8 GB free space (the total HD is about 20 GB, split into 16 GB drive C and 4 GB drive D);
- Ran cccleaner, and fixed entries and issues;
- deleted e-mule (hope it has been deleted)

The computer is noticeably faster, but still too slow. Grateful for any help in removing unwarranted entries. Hijack log included. Many thanks.

Further to the above, there is a WINNT folder on drive C, with 5602 files and 108 folders, with size on disk of 392 MB and size of 593 MB. This is in addition to the Windows folder which contains 17576 files in 1192 folders (2.65 GB size on disk, 3.24 GB size). Is the WinNT folder needed? On the two computers that I have, I do not have the WINNT folder.

It started about 24 hours ago when I started up my computer and it took quite a bit longer than normal. By this I mean that it took 50 minutes for the computer to start up and load all the programs. However it's completely fine when I run it in safe mode.

I have run my anti virus program and it didn't come up with anything serious, I've also restored and deleted a lot of unnecessary programs.

I'm running vista and if it makes any difference I just started using my laptop again on Tuesday for the first time in three months.

I recently reformatted my computer, after getting a virus and deciding that the effort it would take to salvage my computer wasn't worth it.

Prior to getting a virus on my computer, it was very fast and didn't have problems with RAM or memory. After reformatting, however, my computer is very slow despite not having installed even 10 programs.

It's not slow in that the computer is laggy (though it is sometimes, but that's not really something that concerns me), but that programs take very long to load. For instance, I'll open up Firefox, and Windows Task Manager shows the memory usage of firefox.exe increasing by increments of 50. So it'll take 2/3 minutes to open.

In addition, installing new programs takes much much much longer than they should. For instance, it took me nearly an hour and a half to install a trial version of Photoshop CS3, only for it in the end to have a problem telling me to reinstall it. Windows Update took very long as well (nearly half a day!)

I haven't done anything different to this newly reformatted computer except for one thing -- the first thing that I did when I reformatted my computer was to install Trend Micro Anti-Virus, from a trial that I found online.

I do know that prior to installing that program, my computer wasn't too slow at all... But sometime afterwards, it became very sluggish. I don't know if the issue relates at all to the antivirus program itself, but I thought you s... Read more

Might help if you could maybe give more info about your sytem, If you have made any adjustments to your system, What software you are running as of today? One of the problems that i have seen is that people will buy Value ram and install it and seems to be good over a little time but then things just GET really slow. Thinking it may have been something they installed they will then try and put it all back to the way it was... Still slow they don't get the idea of what it could be.. Then they put the Ram back as it came from the factory and all Speeds back up.... With our systems today there are so many things that can make things go slow.... Change of hardware, Change in the Bios settings, change in software and also some updates came sadly make our ssystems worse then they were at one time..... now when you said that you reset to new that tells me that if it was an update then that would have made the system somewhat better then with a Bad update if you will.... Then another thing? Update from 8 or 8.1 to 10? You went back to your old software or just did a reset back to start of your 10? Again if you could give more info you may find more help for the issue..... Have you changed out anything? added anything? Things like Printers don't really matter much.. But a different HDD, or GPU, or extra USB devices and things like that can make things go slower... Hello!

Can someone please help me? I am writing this from a dimly-lit Polish internet cafe with a slow
internet connection. I came here because my Toshiba laptop (windows xp) has been running painfully
slowly. My livelihood depends on my computer and internet working!! Apparently I have caught a virus
and/or malware, but I cannot even post a HijackThis report, because my internet connection is too slow,
either on DSL or 3-G, to even download the Hijack This program!!!

The internet speed in this internet cafe is a measly 8 megabytes. It takes too long to download from

Hey,

I'm trying to help a friend with their computer issue (Dell, running Vista). The machine is painfully slow while online and off.

When online you can click a link or two to jump to other articles, but after a couple of times the computer will just sit with the wheel spinning on the screen and never load the new page. Most of the time you have to use the Task Manager to get out of the browser. This computer is about 3 years old and is used by an older person for basically, email, internet, recipes and etc.

Yesterday, I checked to see what was in start-up and turned off a couple of things, but nothing in there that was a red flag. Cleaned up the registry and de-fraged the hard drive using Tuneup Utilities. Ran Ad-Aware and it took 3 hours to complete! Did not really find anything concerning. I don't think I have ever run Ad-Aware and it take that long to complete a scan. The hard drive is only about 25% full, so there is not a lot on the hard drive.

After asking the owner a few more questions, she said it seemed to start after a recent McAfee update. I don't use McAfee on my computers, so I was curious if this was happening to others who use the product.

I think I may remove McAfee and install Avast and run a boot scan this evening.

I know that I can post a HJT report, but did not want to do that until I had eliminated other possibilities.

I would appreciate any suggestions of other things to check/eliminate before posting a HJT report.

I'm running Free Windows Registry Repair. After finding and fixing thousands of errors, it keeps finding about 50. I'll fix and scan again, and most of the same ones come back, always around 50. I wiped and reinstalled XP a while ago. I've also cleaned out all non-essential stuff with CCleaner. It's still difficult just running one program, forget about multiple programs or games. Any ideas? I'm not getting a new computer or OS.

Every reputable tech support source I've ever read says don't bother with registry cleaners. They don't really do much in terms of improving performance, and they can seriously mess up your computer. Can you give a little more info on your computer, specifically how much RAM you have? Also do me a favor and look at your task manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Del) and tell me how many processes are running?

Hello,

My wife is from Waynesboro, PA and she read about this website in the local newspaper (apparently the creator of the site is from there and lives there as well). Sorry, but she wanted me to mention this

My problem is that everything is taking forever to happen in my computer. Examples: when I try to open a folder it takes minutes for that folder to open; if I try to rename a file it takes minutes for the "right click" to start a menu of options; when I try to empty the trash it takes minutes for that to happen (if it ever happens). Often, when a folder will not open and I use the "task manager" the window of the folder that is taking forever to open will shut down after a "not responding" message. What sometimes happens is that I receive a "Windows Explorer not responding" window. Also, some programs will either take forever to open or will just not open at all when I try to open them.

I have already ran Malaware, Search & Destroy and SuperAntiSpyware and removed some crap they found. I also did a "system restore" to about one week ago (before these problems started). Here follows my HiJack this log.

Please help. This computer is only one year old and there is no reason for it to be acting this way other than the fact it is probably infected.

My windows XP Pro install should be clean, as very rarely do I actually use it. Most everything I do is done inside of VMs.

Earlier today I was watching a video (on the host OS, not in a VM) while running Pidgin and Firefox on Linux in a VM (Using Sun's VirtualBox). I had been having some issues with the VM crashing (what I believed to be related to the minimal amount of ram that I had allocated for it), and it did crash while I was watching this video.

Everything began to stutter, and the computer froze. After rebooting, it is taking upwards of 10 minutes for the Windows boot screen (with blue load bar) to finish, another few minutes for the the CRTL-ALT-DEL to show up, and then a minute or two for me to log in.

Things I have done in an attempt to diagnose this:
Ran memtest86, two passes with no errors
pulled individual ram modules out, same thing, regardless of what is pulled
detached all USB devices
booted into safe mode

All of these things produced no results.

I booted off of a Slax (linux live) cd, and the system was running considerably better than XP was, with no noticeable effects of this issue.
This install of windows is fairly new, It was built about a week and a half ago using nLite to integrate graphics, network, and hdd drivers. It has been working flawlessly until this point.
Thanks for any ideas, I'm really looking forward to getting this resolved.

I've been having issues with all browsers since a recent re-install of Win 7 Ultimate.
 
I've never had browsing issues before, and recently installed a new MB & RAM because my adoring nephew decided he wanted to 'fix' my front panel USB sockets with a screwdriver. Bless his cotton socks, and he's still alive but managed to fry everything else.
 
Since my install I've painstakingly re-installed everything from before and sat through a couple of years worth of updates, yet my browsing capability is no where near what it used to be.
 
All graphics, videos, Ads, particularly in Face Book, BBC iPlayer, You Tube and miniclip are very slow to load - even general web page load up take 6-10 seconds to fill all the page images.
 
I've run countless AV's, Spybot, Stopzilla in standard and safe mode - installed firefox tweaks to load pages quicker, checked to make sure my drivers are up to date, but no avail.
 
Please could I call upon your expertise to help me return my browsing enjoyment back to normality?

Hi there,
I am new here. I am also relatively new to Vista. I love XP SP2 but I got vista business with my new tablet (1GB RAM, T7250).
I have a huge problem with vista's explorer. When I use desktop search on XP and select a pdf file, it appears INSTANTLY in the preview - which is btw fully equipped adobe reader, so you can further search the file, copy from it etc.
Now in vista, when I click the file, my computer hangs for about 3 minutes, and then the file appears.
I hope this is not normal. What can be possibly wrong? I updated adobe reader but it didn't help.
So, why is it so slow? This makes the system useless for me.
Also, can I change the appearance of the reader in the preview pane so that it offers full interface, just like in XP?
Can anyone help me, please?

I'm not an expert, but 1GB is not a lot to be running Vista with.
Have you thought of upgrading with more RAM Memory?
I think i saw here recently that Vista can easily take up to 3GB of RAM Memory.

Question: Painfully slow...

I am hoping for some assistance, please. My mum's laptop is seizing up and hanging the longer she uses it. I am sure there are all sorts of rubbish programmes that are causing it to plod. Mum's laptop is a HP G62 intel i3 4GB running Windows 7.

Having tried to follow the instructions, I am stuck with HiJackThis. First of all, it gives an error message that my system has denied access to the Hosts file. If I OK this, it performs the scan but will not save a log file. Any ideas?

Question: Painfully slow

I am running Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, and am having intermittent slowness issues where the computer comes to a crawling pace while using Outlook, Chrome or IE, any of the 3.  Pages won't load, they time out or just continue to hang.  The Task Manager CPU is low, memory is only using less than 2gigs of the 4gigs available.  Am I infected?  I was told you were the people to help me, so.... I would receomend definatly checking the page fill size... by default windows 7 sets it as automatically managed by system... if it is set to automatic then that is fine.. also youcould try disabling windows aero theme. also a disk optimizer / defragmenter would be good to run. you have a good video card , processor, and ram. so you just gota get the system to read the files and know were there are from the sounds of it ... also the thing i would recomend before you do anything ... is a check disk.. you go to start , click on my computer and right click ont he C: drive and go to properties. then go to the tools tab and schedule a disk check by checking both check marks .. then a disk check will be scheduled for the next time the machine will restart.

Over the last few weeks or so I've noticed my pc getting slower and slower until it's almost painful to do anything on it that doesn't take ages not only that my internet keeps disconnecting could they be related because they started happening about the same time.

I've got a Netgear DG843Gv3 router and haven't had any problems with it until now

I posted this about a week ago with no resolve. My wife is threatening ugly things if I don't get it right(lol). I'm running ME with512 ram, 933 Pentium, about 5G left on a 20G drive, & IE6.
The problem is page loading is very slow. Maybe 1/3 the usual time. Everything else works fine. It's very maddening!
I regularly run Adaware, Spybot, & Norton Anti Virus.
Please, please, please help!

Following on from some great advice in these forums I offered to assist my friend with some Malware issues.1) I ran rkill to stop an XP antivirus Malware issue.2) I ran Malwarebytes successfully3) I've ran superantispyware successfully4) I've ran ccleaner successfully,5) I've installed AVG free6) Everything above up to date7) Deleted ie history, cookies, etc (whole 9 yards) I've also defragmented the hard drive.PC is running sweet now but ie is painfully slow to load initially, web pages open ok once we are up and running.I've loaded Firefox and it runs no problem, any further advice?Compaq AMD 512Mb RAM

Question: painfully slow IE8

Believe it or not but it took my pc to load your website 12 minutes. The slowness started about six hours ago, all of a sudden. My system is running xp pro sp3 with the latest updates. I have mcafee total protection installed since christmas last. I have run a total scan with mcafee also with malwarebytes, and both found no issues. Please see my hjt log file below. My PC (?) has suddenly gone very slow?. when i am on the internet the cursor has a eggtimer by it and the page takes a (long) while to load.Have done obvious things - Virus scan, spybot, adaware, defrag, empty cookies, empty temp files,.It was OK thursday. Question: Painfully slow PC

I have my daughters old PC as a second one, it is an emachine with a 1.7 ghz intel celeron processor, 128 mb of ddr, running on XP home with a 40gb HDD.When I got it it was so slow and the HDD was continuously active so I replaced that with another 40gb one I had spare. Initially it was quite quick but since I have installed AVG and Zone alarm it is so slow you can cook and eat a meal whilst waiting for it to do something. It wasn't all that much better before i put Zone alarm on and even disabling it doesnt make much difference.Could this be the processor or would increasing the RAM to a reasonable size do the job??

Last week my internet browsing became painfully slow on my main work computer and I'm at my wits end as to what it could be. Any help is REALLY appreciated.

Every application still runs at top speed with no issues, it is just web browsing. I guess that isn't entirely true since internet dependant programs like Google Earth are slow as well, but it's the "internet" part that is slow on them.

I run CCleaner every day, I have AVG and and AVG PC tuneup both of which I run on a regular basis. I have Spy Bot search and destroy. I have malwarebytes. None of the above are finding any issues. and all are updated

I dont think it's my router. My other computers run the intenet at the same speeds they always have, just not this one. I now have this computer hooked up VIA cable to the router just to make sure it isn't a wireless problem and it still is slow.

I have IE, Opera, Firefox and chrome. All went from very fast to very slow when whatever is wrong went wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have alot of add-ons and tools bars installed on all browsers? if so try uninstalling some of them. Add-ons and toolsbars use extra RAM if using too much this can cause slower page loads.

I have a PC that is about 8 years old. Its got a PII and is running XP pro (sp2).

I recently added a wireless card and put it on my home network. It ran fine for a couple of weeks, but now it is running painfully slow.

Just booting the machine and getting the start menu to come up takes forever. Every application is painfully slow and I am unable to connect to my network.

Anyone know where I could begin to troubleshoot this?

Hi,I moved over to TalkTalk internet about a year ago from Orange Broadband. Since then I have experienced very slow connection, which didn't appear to happen at first but now is almost always occuring.Basically, pages stop loading, for example if I open a YouTube video it stops after loading about 20%. This also happens with downloads. Anything larger than about 3mb and it stops.This isn't just the size of the content though, as it happens on text pages like a google search results page too.I've done some searching on the net and seen many people say it's because of the amount of traffic slowing down connections, but again this isn't the issue. It happens at all times of the day, for example I tried this morning before 7am and couldn't load anything pretty much.Is this likely to be a TalkTalk issue as I never had any problems with my broadband connection when I was on Orange Broadband. Is it worth me looking for a different supplier?Thanks

My PC is doing my head in! It takes ages to boot, Internet explorer regularly refuses to respond and even Outlook has to wait before opening different folders.

I have updated the drivers.  The touchpad and my external mouse work fine but no matter what I do the pointer is painfully slow except during reboot which is when it works fine.  Once the reboot finishes it is painfully slow.

Hi, have you checked the settings in -control panels- mouse- ultranav. there is a check box for the touchpad -(use as pointing device with advanced features) select this one. I may be stating the obvious but it worked for me when I updated drivers on my T43 and had that problem.  regards.

I think that my computer has far to much juck on it, and the reason I feel this is that I have just got internet and Im trying to watch things on youtube and the sounds good but the picture is slow and stuttery, also when Im just on the computer normally and not on the internet my programs take far to long to appear.

Computing in genaral is really painful and irratating how can I fix my computer without having to download a clean up program or taking it to a computer shop, there must be some back door program I can run or open up to get to the problem and fix it.

P.s everytime I try to logon to websites Ive been on for years so I know I can trust them this sheald sign appears and intersepts my route to the website and tells me that maybe the certificate is not valied how do make this stop or go away. As anyone reads this can guess I have a lot of problems with my computer can somebody please pleaseeeeee!!!! help me manythanx.

My six year old Dell Dimension E310 has been working fine for years. It's nothing spectacular but it works well. However, something - I'm thinking an update or a piece of software - has caused it slow down dramatically in the last few weeks after starting up. I have tried everything. I have run rKill, MalwareBytes, removed practically all of the Programs such as Java, iTunes, Adobe Flash, uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Security Essentials, looked through Program File folders, unchecked Java Updater on MSConfig...

I think that's everything, but still it runs so slow I want to stick pins in my eyes. Then, after it has been running for perhaps an hour or so, it picks right up and runs beautifully once more.

That first hour is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

Answer:Painfully slow start up

Check that "File Indexing" (often referred to simply as "Indexing") is not enabled.
This can have a significant effect on performance while it's actually running, and is enabled by default on Windows XP. Go here to learn how to disable it properly:
Turn off indexing and speed up Windows XP

I mention indexing because you say that performance improves after about an hour. That hour could well be the length of time it takes for Windows to index your files.

It seems like things have come to a grinding halt on my XP desktop.

Two weeks ago, one of my computers suddenly began to take forever to load web pages. It does it in both Firefox, and IE so it's not browser-specific. I scanned the comp with AVG, Avast and Ad-Adware (By Lavasoft) and my comp came up clean. I checked the download and upload speeds on the computer and they are perfectly fine for my connection and are unharmed. I also tried a couple TCP optimizers which did not solve the problem.None of the other computers on my network have experienced any problems and I attempted to restore my computer to a prior point, but it would not let me. I don't really want to reformat the comp. Frankly, I can't think of anything else besides port fowarding, but I haven't touched my ports in a while so I can't imagine why it would only start behaving like this.

I ran Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware, and while Malwarebytes did manage to find a trojanm it still hasn't fixed my problem. My current logfile is this:

Hi, i'm quite new to this so please bear with me. For the past 4 years I have been happily connected to broadband via Pipex, the past 18 months or so on a 2mb line. It has all been working fantastically. Suddenly since the very end of Jan, my download speeds have dropped from around 220+kbps to about 30kbps. After speaking to Pipex support (not the best, it has to be said), i was getting nowhere and I eventually threw in the towel and switched to PlusNet (better support and much much cheaper). I still have the terrible connection speeds. In my possession I have three machines, two routers and a modem (obviously not all connected at once), and i've tried varying configurations to rule out hardware at my end. I've spoken to PlusNet who say that as I can get a throughput of over 400kbps there is nothing more they can do to help. My throughput ranges from 150kbps to around 500kbps. I understand that it should be about 1800kbps+ for a 2mb service. I'm literally only a few hundred metres from the exchange. It's really starting to get me down now, as it was working great and now I have the equivalent of a 256k connection. I can get a decent speed if I use the machine in the middle of the night, but really that's not practical. Can anyone suggest a way I could progress this forward?

Have you asked BT or whoever supplies your 'phone service to check the line running into your home? I had a similar problem some time ago, and it turned out to be an old faulty cable. It was replaced with a nice new shiny copper cable, and problem solved.

My desktop is eight years old and has only 256mb memory. Until recently XP has worked fine but now it takes fifteen minutes before I can get work started and the hard drive amber light remains on. After this delay it returns to normal. I have noticed that when I manage to open a page (in any program) and then close it the page closes gradually from the top down. After that initial 15 minutes everything works OK. I have run defrag and right-clicking on the C: drive in My Computer, Properties, Tools, leads me to Error checking (which it does before Windows starts the next time, and finds no errors). Also I have not added any software or hardware lately so I cannot imagine what is going on).
I know the memory is small but it normally is not a problem. Any ideas please on where else to look.

Hi there,

I'm helping my mother from a distance and am not completely sure what may be troubling her computer. She's 99.9% computer illiterate so I've minimized the number of programs I've had her download and run so far. It may be coincidental but she downloaded some sort of coupon printer at about the time that she began having problems. She says she uninstalled it but it still shows up on her menu of programs. Her biggest problem is starting up--it takes ages to boot, icons are very slow to show up on the desktop. When she tries to initiate an action like clicking on the start menu, it often takes 3-4 minutes for that action to complete.

I had her run a Panda scan and I don't think she correctly saved the results. Ugh.

I then had her do the hijack this log. That's what I'm attaching. In the meantime...

She ran Spybot and it found:

Next I had her download Avira, as she had attempted to uninstall Trend's antivirus before and I wasn't sure what was up with her and any sort of anti virus software. Hi Guys,

I am hoping someone here is able to help me.

I have reloaded a corporate Windows XP image onto my computer and the computer runs really well. I have put a number of other programs (all legt)on and my computer has got to the stage that it now runs extremely slow. It is to the the point that I would now consider it unusable.

Just as an example it took 5 minutes to get to the stage I am now able to type this message in. When I go into task manager my CPU is maxxing at 100% continuously

I have had a look through the forums and have run MalwareBytes Anti Malware, ATC Cleaner, I have defraged the disk but nothing sems to make any difference. The Anti-virus I have is McAfee and it is updated every day. I haven't even loaded up any dodgy software yet.

I am just hoping that someone is able to help and let me know what is going on and how I can resolve this.

Answer:Windows XP Pro run painfully Slow

If malware isn't an issue, you may have too many unnecessary processes running at the same time in the background, thus slowing down your computer. You might want to consider changing your antivirus too. McAfee is a real system resource hog!

How much RAM do you have?

I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my pc. I love it. All is fine but my printer. The software disk says it will work with windows os through xp. I tried to load it anyway. I get an error when I try to load it saying it cannot run command. The printer is an HP Photosmart C6180 all in one. It works with 7, but way too slow. It was real fast with XP Home. My system is a Pentium 4, 3.2 gig intel processor, 2 gigs ram, Nvidia Gforce 7200 graphics card. I have 160 gig hard drive. So far all is great except for the printer. Any help would be wonderful. Did you install the XP driver in compatibility mode? When you use an older driver you need to install it in compatibility mode. You do that be right clicking the installer>properties>compatibility>choose XP

I have an old laptop, a Presario 600, that is running very slow. Slow loading, slow opening icons, and just a general sluggish nature. I've run Ccleaner, Malware, Superantispy, Defragged it, Disk Cleanup, and the thing is still slow. I've also uninstalled unnecessary programs, and stopped the Start up processes i don't need. This computer is still about to be thrown out the window! Any other ideas what I can do to save this old dinosaur??? Thank you.

HELP!My computer is soooo slow and getting slower! I'm literally having to wait for this to type! I've tried scanning and defrags, I've scanned for viruses (and then uninstalled the software because it keeps stopping other software). I've re-installed my OS (Windows XP) and tried everything else I can think of!
It's slow on every program and keeps freezing.
The Task Manager shows that my cpu is running at 100% - all the time!
Can someone suggest how I can fix this - it's driving me insane!

Hi there i have a pc wired to a router and a wireless laptop and the internet is painfully slow.I ran both Malware bytes and super anti spyware and they found nothing.My antivirus found some things but when it removed them the problem was still there.I speed tested my internet and the download speed seems to be ok ish but the upload speed is vitrually non existant.I have run the tests from there proper locations but i can't upload the logs so i have had to load them onto a external drive and use a different pc.

Hi.

Im at a dead end on how to fix my laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 which is about 5 years old. I have never had any problems with it before until a few weeks ago. My laptop has no battery life unless it is plugged in, and a few weeks ago my niece pulled the wire out the laptop and it so my laptop turned itself off straight away, midway through browsing the internet.

Since then, whenever i try to turn the laptop on, it loads quite fast until windows starts, and then goes reeeeaaalllllyyyyyy slow! It took 2 hours for it to load before i could even press the start button and then spent another 20 minutes thinking about that before it opened it. It looks as though its booting up/loading and therefore it wont let me do anything else.

I know that it was really full, with only 8% space so I ran a defragmentation and clean-up (which took about 6 hours!!) and now its 15% free but this hasnt helped with the problem.

Any help or advice would be really useful...Im not sure if the problem is a windows thing, or something else....i know how to use them, but dont how to fix them!

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support


Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy Log - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
AVG Antispyware Log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
Bitdefender Log - from step 6
Panda Scan Log - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat

I wish I understood the delay, but I don't. So I'm here. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had previously posted in the malware section, but I had no bites. Perhaps it isn't malware anyway.

The trouble is starting my computer. It can take upwards of 10 minutes at times to work through the initial windows before I reach the login page. I've cleared what caches I know of and I don't think too much starts up with the OS, so are there any tips on how to continue troubleshooting?

Over the past few weeks when I boot up my Windows ME Office 2000 PC it kind of pauses for a couple of minutes before loading my desktop icons on the screen. It then works as normal. I can't restore my system as I had a nasty virus on it (which I have now got rid of). It's not the RAM and the only software I have installed since this started is Avast anti virus. What could it be??

Hi everyone. I am desperate so I decided to write. I have a Dell 1545 Inspiron, 4 years old. The first symptom I noticed was that the laptop always hangs when browsing with any browser: mozilla, IE, chrome. One day it just stopped working, so I did a factory restore (my DVD drive doesn't work so I didn't want to reformat without knowing how to boot with disk). For awhile it worked fine but about a month later it started freezing again. I downloaded Chrome and Safari (After the system restore I ran only on IE and Mozilla).
A couple days earlier I noticed that even my wi-fi turned on and off without reason, I lost connection from our router but my friends (whom I live with) said that their connection was wroking just fine. Then, after this I noticed that my laptop just froze everywhere. I tried to open folders, freeze. I just couldn't do anything.
I decided to do a check disk and it didn't even work. I had to do an MS DOS check disk! And it gets stuck at 6%.
I don't think it's a virus because my CPU Usage is very low 1-8%, and I don't see any anomalous processes.
Guys, what do you think? I am so worried that some hardware is busted! I don't want to shell out the dough....

Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Download Autoruns and Autorunsc Unzip it to your desktop and then double click autoruns.exe After the scan is finished then click on File>>>>>>>>>>>Save The default name will be autoruns.arn make sure to save it as Autoruns.txt under the file type option. in other words make sure it is a .txt file instead of .arn Attach the text in your next reply.
