I'm having troubles connecting to a specific website, http://www.deviantart.com/ . For the last week or so, every time I've tried to connect to deviantart it's been giving me an error. It always says "Failure To Connect To Web Server". The router I'm using lets me access the site on another computer, but not this one. I've visited a few websites trying to figure out what the problem is, and from what I've gathered, it's either hughesnet or something with my computer. A lot of people have been having problems with hughesnet, trying to get to certain websites like imageshack, deviantart and others but receiving the failure to connect error. I don't know. Anyway, here's my hijackthis log, and thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Okay, bumping this topic and giving some more information on my problem that I just now discovered.
Last night, I could access deviantart just fine, no problems at all. So I thought the problem corrected because I downloaded ad-aware and cleared all of the tracking cookies on my computer. I thought it was kind of a weird reason for the site to start working, but I wasn't going to question it. But when I tried to access the site again a few minutes ago, it was back to the "Failure to Connect To Web Server" crap.
So if anyone has any help to offer, I would really appreciate it.
When I turn my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop computer on I get the black screen that asks to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start windows normally. I've tried each of them and it always goes to the blue screen with the following: Stop: c0000218 Registry file failure The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\System or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete. I have tried using my Windows Xp disc and it won't load. I don't have a recovery disc, but I used every disc that came with the computer and each time it goes back to the blue screen. Does anyone know how or if this can be repaired. If so, please give me simple step by step instructions.
Thanks for any help I can get!
MODS MOVE THIS TO THE RIGHT SECTION IF ITS IN THE WRONG?..thanks!
help me please! about "POP""IMAP""SMTP" incoming/outgoing mail server for Tbird....
i have no clue on what to do.. im stuck at a screen that says this
?..? said:
"Server Infomation"
"Select the type of incoming server you are using"
"[_??_] POP [_??_] IMAP"
"Enter the name of your incoming server (for example, "mail.example.net")."
"Incoming Server: [___????????????????___]"

"Enter the name of your outgoing server (SMTP)(for example, "smtp.example.net")."
"outgoing Server: [___????????????????___]"Click to expand...
afaik hotmail does not provide pop\imap or smtp for free you may get it if you pay for the hotmail service but i would not recommend you do that just so you can get pop\imap or smtp
hrrm tbird and hotmail from the thunderbird faq
Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?
No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/.
I have used several different programs lately that whenever they try to validate my information from the web, I get an error that the program is "unable to connect to remote server." I removed my anti-virus software and disabled windows firewall, but nothing seems to work. Internet Explorer and Firefox seem to work just fine. The other weird things is that these programs work just fine when I use them on my laptop which is connected to the same router. Thus, the router is not the problem. Since I have the same problem with multiple programs, I'm assuming that there must be something wrong with my windows network settings. I am running Windows XP
Any ideas of what fixes I can try?
sometimes when I turn my computer on and connect to the internet this window appears and wont disappear
it doesn't matter if I click always block or always allow after a few seconds it reappears
post a hijack this log and disable everything in msconfig except your av and reboot then scan with hijack this and post
1 more repliesHi,
This is my first posting and am not sure if this is the place for it.
I run Mozilla Thunderbird on both my PC and my USB handy Mem. Most of the time I just use the USB instalation. Yesterday I had been using it with no problem then later in the day I opened it up again and got the error message : "Could not connect to mail server ..... the connection was refused."
I tried using the desk top version and that was no problem.
I have done virus checks, malware checks etc. Nothing showed up.
I run the Comodo security S/W; firewall, mem.firewall, BOC anti malware and anti virus. I also regularly clean and defrag my drives.
Today in trying to look at the problem I found that my task manager was disabled by the administrator, I am admin and I had not done so. I found a prog. at www.dougknox.com which repaired that problem.
I have looked through all the firewall settings and for the other s/w and can't see anything that should stop the USB instalation of Thunderbird working.
I run Windows XP Pro SP2
If you need further information to help, please let me know.
Help grately appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
The problem is solved.
It looks like Comodo Firewall does not like Anvir Task Manager. So I got rid of both and just reinstalled Comodo after making sure all of its hidden files etc. were gone.
I had tried uninstalling etc. before but did not check for remaining files.
I'm trying to install Exchange 2003 on a forest that's never had Exchange on it before. The domain controller, which will also host Exchange, is running Windows 2003 Server SP2. When I try to run the forestprep or domainprep, I get the error "Failed to connect to the Schema Master server" (see attachment).
dcdiag also shows some interesting errors. Also attached.
Thanks for any ideas!
Hi guys and gals,
i live in a student house, and we have a wireless network but my laptop can't connect to it. the lan works fine on my laptop, and my laptop can connect to a few of our neighbours unsecured networks. 3 other laptops in the house have no problem connecting to our wireless, but my laptop wont.
i opened a command prompt and did ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew and this message came up: An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
when i try to connect to it in the list of available wireless networks, it acquires network address for a while, then says limited or no connectivity. i click repair, and it says " Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address. For assistance, contact the person who manages your network." ... and im the most computer literate person we've got
I attempted to remove some malware by using MalwareBites, and now I have the message "unable to connect to proxy server" whenever I open a web-browser.

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Please do not install any new software during the cleaning process other than the tools I provide for you. This can hinder the cleaning process. Please do not perform System Restore or any other restore.
Instructions I give to you are very simple and made for complete beginner to follow. That's why you need to read through my instructions carefully and completely before executing them.
Please do not run any tools other than the ones I ask you to, when I ask you to. Some of these tools can be very dangerous if used improperly. Also, if you use a tool that I have not requested you use, it can cause false positives, thereby delaying the complete cleaning of your machine.
All tools we use here are completely clean and do not contain any malware. If your antivirus detects them as malicious, please disable your antivirus and then continue.
If during the process you run across anything that is not in my instructions, please stop and ask. If any tool is running too much time (few hours), please stop and inform me.

Hi!
My daughter got a virus on her laptop and after getting rid of it (I think all the way, it's hard to tell until I can update the anti-virus software) I can no longer connect her laptop to the internet.
I have had a problem in the past with having to reboot the server and all the computers in order for the computers (all of them in the house) to register new ip addresses. Normally, if I have one computer that refuses to connect even after a reboot of the entire system I can connect it thru LAN and it, bang, fixes itself. However, this time it is not working.
Not only will her wireless not connect but neither will the LAN. I have opened the cmd prompt and done an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew. Every time I do this I get the message:
"An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."
I tried the "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" and it seemed to work fine.
I also tried the "netsh winsock reset" and it seemed to work fine as well.
I rebooted each time I attempted a fix. Still I am unable to connect to the internet. It says it is connecting locally, but will not connect to the actual internet. When I use the repair option it gives me the same messages over and over that do not work. It always leads back to the IP address.

I just bought a Linksys Router model BEFSR41 and installed it step-by-step. Everything appeared okay until the last step of the Setup CD. The bar loaded 99% and then said "Router not found."
I called Linksys and we tried for an hour to fix the problem. Finally he said it must be a defective router. So I exchanged it for another. Still the same problem with the new router.
When I open my Network and Sharing Center, it says I'm connected to a local network but not to the internet. When I diagnose the problem it says "cannot communicate with primary DNS server 192.168.1.254."
Does anyone know how I might fix this? I've tried to reset the router and also to power down everything and power back up.
I have At&t DSL internet. The modem is a Motorola. I'm running Windows Vista.
Thank you so much.
Hello,
I am trying to configure Remote Desktop Access to work over the internet.
Remote Desktop Access works on my local network.
Both of my computers are on Windows 7 Professionnal. My router is a Belkin F9K1002.
I followed the official widows tutorial. I forwarded the necessary port on my router (I switched from port 3389 to 50000, in case 3389 was blocked by my isp).
Every time I try to connect I get
"Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1)Remote access to the server is not enabled
2)The remote computer is turned off
1)The remote computer is not available on the network
Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled."
Any ideas as to where the problem could be coming from?
Welcome to SF,
Please verify your RDC configuration, pls. see how.
Disable any Firewall (built-in or Software) from both computers for now.

I get an "Unable to connect to proxy server" when using Chrome and I get site redirects when using Firefox. Internet Explorer appears to work however, the LAN settings dialog has to have "Automatically detect settings" unchecked. Otherwise, IE will also report that it is unable to connect to proxy server. I have tried many virus and maleware removal tools. Some found issues and quarantined the offending files yet the problems persist. All the virus and maleware tools are reporting my system is clean.
Hello,
They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.
Before we start please read and note the following:
At the top of your post, please click on the "Watch thread" button and make sure to check Watch this thread...and receive email notifications. This will send an email to you as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing me to solve your problem faster.

Let me start off by saying I have tried all the basic steps to clear this problem but I still am unable to use Chrome. However, IE and FireFox work just fine.
The common method of going into Internet Properties > Connections > LAN Settings > unchecking the Use a proxy server for your LAN does not work for me.
Alternately, I ran several malware removal tools but I still stand at the same place.
After searching a little more, I found an article on this forum http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/1151568-yet-another-unable-connect-proxy.html
I am facing the exact same issues as mentioned by Larrylowtech in the post. So, I have followed all the steps mentioned by dvk01 (Derek) in the mentioned post.

Hi All
i search other threads but no joy. My flatmate has a server with files on it he shares with others in the house. It is a wireless connection. My laptop detects the wireless network no problem and i connect to the internet and get my email fine. It is password protected but i have that saved to speed connection.
The issue is i cannot see his computter - others connect straight away when they type the server name - and they can see it on windows explorer ok as well. to connect he tells me just type \\scribe to get to it from windows explorer address tool bar( no the real name BTW - by way of example )
i saw in another thread to haev windows firewall / exceptions file share ticked - which it is by default
any clues would be gratefully received.i am running XP2
thanks Andy
Thank you in advance for your generous, patient help.
Starting several days ago, Chrome stopped working,
I can open Chrome but get the error every time I try to click a link.
I did check my proxy settings and they are unchecked and I did not need to deselect it.
I have run Malwarebytes and Superantispyware and am clean
I read many of the previous posts here on this issue and did not find a solution
There are several other strange issues that may or may not be related.
I'll add them just in case.
In IE11, I am getting a lot of popups about certificates.
In Gmail, it started opening links in new windows.
I have always opened in tabs.
I think I may have that fixed.
But links open very slowly

In the notification area, bottom right of my screen, is a blue-edged envelope for gmail. When I boot-up my PC there is a dark blue apostrophe mark across the envelope and a message just above it saying "error etc..cannot connect to server". If I ignore it and open gmail via my desktop shortcut all is well and the apostrophe vanishes. Can I stop it doing this? And does it really matter?
It's only because your PC hasn't connected to the internet when the GMail notifier is trying to log on, mine does it too. As soon as you connect it's fine, even if you don't log on to GMail via the shortcut.
My office runs all Windows 7 x64 machines connected to a Windows server using Active Directory in a domain environment, using login scripts to map 3 drives X, Y and Z.
For many years we were using a Windows Server 2003 x86 server box. This past weekend we made the switch to a new 2012 R2 x64 box, and the login scripts were adjusted to add a 4th drive letter U for each user's own personal folder. The login script has the U drive mapped by connecting to \\server\share\%username%.
The problem now is that EVERY time any workstation restarts or logs out and logs back in, the "could not connect all network drives" balloon pops up. But when clicking on the balloon, Computer shows up with all 4 network drives properly connected.
I have looked at this thread: A Solution to Could not reconnect all network drives but I don't see why this would have just started happening when switching to this new server. I almost never saw that message on any machine before, when using the old server and mapping 3 network drives.
I don't mind doing the registry edit on each machine to suppress that message, as we only have about 10 machines in the office. But I'm wondering if there's something else causing this to happen now and not before the switchover?
I do not know why this happens after moving to 2012 server, but we see it too :-(
You can:
1) live with it
2) suppress the message (your link)
3) delay the appearance of the desktop
4) find another solution
The solution that you pick should depend on the problems (if any) that are caused by not having a network connection to a mapped drive. For us, the network drive connection is not re-established until the user clicks on the drive letter via Windows (file) Explorer. This created a problem for an application that we use. Embedded in that app are paths to files on the mapped drive. If there is no network connection to the mapped drive, the app would throw an error - stating that the files do not exist. This confused those using the app. The work around is to open Windows (file) Explorer and click on the mapped drive to re-establish the network connection - then retry the app.
We also had some things that ran at start up and needed that network connection to the mapped drive.
Because of those issues, we oped for solution #3 from the list above. However, that "solution" added so much delay to some of the computers during boot time, that we removed it and we are back to option #1. Those using the app still get confused, but they eventually figure out why the app cannot find the file. For the start up items, we moved files to each computer so as to not depend on the server.
This is just one of the many stupid things that Microsoft does...

That's the error I was getting while trying to login to my 2003 server (not the AD box.)
Someone mentioned remove from AD, reboot, reinsert to AD. I will be trying that to see if things clear up.
Wish me luck, as I was worried that file ownership would be screwed up when I do this sort of detach from domains....

3 more repliesHey folks,
My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.
Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.
Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!
Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!
I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.
Many thanks,
Joe.

Welcome to Major Geeks!
If you can connect via IP address and not via a URL, it sounds like an issue with your DNS (Domain Name Server). Perhaps yours is not setup properly. Do you use a router? Make sure you have your PC setup for DHCP (that is Obtain an IP address automatically) and also Obtain DNS server address automatically.
Also click Start, Run, and enter cmd to open a command prompt. In the command prompt window enter the below commands each followed by the enter key. Note in each line there is a space after the word ipconfig
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /all
In the output from the last command, are all of your address setup properly?
will not let my sign on to my google account and my Kid cant get on her account. it keeps telling her she needs administration approval. then every thing freeze up.
More repliesGuys, I know this question has been asked repeatedly but I've tried everything, searched everywhere, and still cannot repair the internet connection on our gym computer that I've been trying to optimize this week. It's a Toshiba running Vista and we connect to the net via a Verizon broadband PC card (UT Starcom). I've tried to connect to wireless networks but that's not working, either.
We were working fine up until today when a pair of Windows Updates (IE8 and Office Geniune Advantage Notifications) were installed. Then it went down. I've tried system restores, etc., to no avail. I should also point out that this PC had Norton and Mcafee on it at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: ok i thought i fixed the problem, but i actually didn't
So the internet connection on my laptop has always been fine this past month. But in the last couple of days, I couldn't connect to the DSL connection. The internet on the other two computers in my house are working fine. It says I'm connected to local only, but not internet. And when I tried to diagnose the problem, it said "Windows confirmed that this computer cannot connect to Primary DNS Server." I don't have a router. I don't remember doing anything differently in the past couple of days. So please help me!
I was copying (cut and paste) data from one external hard drive (a 250 GB IDE Maxtor in a Adaptec USB enclosure) to another external (a 400 GB IDE Samsung in a Roswill USB enclosure). During the move. During this move, my Thinkpad T43p encountered a NMI Parity error, to which I'm still unsure what caused it, though I think it may have been my Dock II screwing stuff up. I did memtest 10 times over and my memory passed, so I am assuming its my Dock II. ANYWAYS...
So the NMI Parity error was a blue screen, and I restarted the computer. After the restart I noticed the Maxtor external hard drive was missing from my drive list, and in disk management it show as an uninitialized disk.
Okay, no biggie, I've dealt with this before. I tried using GetDataBack for NTFS, that failed to recover. Also failed were Active Partition recovery, Data Doctor Recovery, File Recovery, Restorer 2000, TestDisk, and ZAR.
I'm guessing my Master File Table is trashed and I can't recover it.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Zar should have recovered it (if the data is recoverable)
Also (you may already realize this now) in future Copy and paste

Hello, TSG!
Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.
When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.
TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3
Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more
I have been getting the BSOD since a few weeks and found out by trial and error that a USB-hub is causing the problem. Whenever I disconnect the hub before I shut off the computer I do not get the blue screen.
Yesterday I also got a BSOD that mentioned driver power state failure. After I had de-installed Ubuntu 10.04 (I wanted to see what people are talking about but did not really like it) that problem did not show up again, although I do not know if that is just coincidence.
I have enclosed the dump files as per your instructions and hope that somebody will be able to help me.
Thank you.
Welcome!
It does look as if your USB drivers are causing the issue.

Install win7 x64 (ultimate) runs fine. After about a week, this error appears in when starting task scheduler.I know something is wrong because of scheduled task will not run, so I check task scheduler and get this error. So, I check the registry entries for scheduled tasks and make them match the %systemroot%\system32\tasks folder. The error goes away.... BUT and this is what no one else checks, go ahead and click "display all running tasks".Good luck! "Task Scheduler cannot access Task Scheduler"... ie. media center will no longer wake up and record shows..defrag will not run.. nothing scheduled. In some test installs, the machine will no longer go to sleep!!.(and yes.. I tried uninstall MCE and Reinstalling it along with any other apps)Task scheduler is still broken and will not function. You can add a new task, but the normal required system tasks no longer exist. So Win7 is broke!! Just becaues the Task {0} error is gone doesn't prove anything! After dealing with this for about 2 months straight I'm about to send Balmer screen shots of the damn error messages and ask why there are no answers for this or why is task scheduler locked out to to the local admin. Why are there not verbose debugging tools available so I can try and find out exactly what it happening? You see, I'm 99% sure something in windows is doing this and corrupting itself. It's not a external program. How do I know?? because in many of my test... Read more
More repliesI'm in France for the summer to study abroad, and I have my internet set up though my dorm fine. I can do things like browse the internet, get my email, and talk on aim. However, whenever I try to do anything that requires a "connect to server," I am unable to connect. This includes things like webcam, microphone, yahoo games, bnet, WoW, etc. I don't think it has anything to do with my computer because my settings are the same now as when I had access to these things. Disabling my firewalls does nothing. Is it a restriction that my dorm has placed on the internet connections in the building, and if so, is the only way to get around it by getting the computer guy to remove these restrictions? I am unlearned in these things and I was told that a bunch of smart computer people post here.
Thanks for any replies
"whenever I try to do anything that requires a "connect to server," I am unable to connect"
Your connecting to a server when you do email, internet and aim as well. Talk to the system administrator and see if he/she has ports blocked.
I recently purchased my laptop and I am having trouble with it staying connected to the internet. I keep getting the message " Windows confirmed this computer cannot connect to 'Primary DNS server".
I read in the theads that another person was having this trouble and I tried to follow the advice given, but I had no luck.
I've also called compaq, my isp and linksys, but they all say to call the others so needless to say I am very frustrated.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I get a server error every time I try to connect to one particular website - www.vcdquality.com (all other websites can be accessed OK).
I have 2 other computers connected through the same ethernet router that allow me to access this website with no problem.
It almost seems that this one website is being blocked on one computer somehow. Do I need to reconfigure my browser or what ( XP Pro and current IE)?
Can anyone suggest a solution, would be much appreciated, thanks.
Hi all,
I am having some problems on my Vista machine. Specifically, some programs are unable to connect to the internet, while others work fine.
The two programs I have found so far that will not connect to the internet are Internet Explorer and a game-launch program for "Gates of Andaron". When I try to connect to the latter, it tells me that "a connection to the server cannot be established". When I try to go online with internet explorer I receive the message that "Internet explorer cannot connect to the webpage". This holds true for ANY webpage. I know the problem is with the computer as both my laptops sitting next to me can connect perfectly.
The only thing I can think of is that I recently uninstalled Sophos AntiVirus and installed Avast Internet Security. I tried to find remnants of Sophos with Windows Installer Cleanup and it found nothing.
Any suggestions?
Salud,
Jon
So something pretty weird has been happening recently. My computer will connect to some servers on the internet but not others: for example, I can connect through Firefox but not Internet Explorer, I can connect to Windows Live Messenger, I can't connect to Gameguard or Steam, etc. I lined up some examples and took a screenshot, so that I can illustrate it better. A while ago, around when it started, I had been messing with the settings for the ports the computer connects with because I was trying to get Tor working, and I'm a noob so I think I messed something up in the process. I'm using Comcast as my ISP, and my router is a D-Link.
If you really want to help, add me on Windows Live Messenger (thank god it's one of the programs that works) and I'll be able to use Webcam Max so that you can see what I'm doing on the desktop and help more easily.
Windows Live Messenger email: [email protected]
The picture has some programs lined up as examples of which work and which don't.
Suggest you edit out that email address, unless you're lonely and love to get spam.
I don't know if there's a specific rule about services like Tor, but it seems to me that type of identity hiding is against the spirit of what this forum stands for. Have you been banned from sites?
I posted this the other day and deleted it, because I thought I had solved the problem. But it's back. I just upgraded to version 7.10 and when I go to TechSpot, I get a message "ads.ad-flow.com" "cannot connect to remote server". Does anyone know what to do to fix this. This problem is mentioned in Opera's knowledge base, but none of there fixes solve the problem.
That is just a problem with the ad servers. I have had this problem many times before...they are just down at the moment. That is why you had the problem for a bit, then it went away. There is nothing you can do about it, except wait it out.
Ok it started out where I had internet, but it was super slow, and would let sites like google open(slowly), but once you typed in like facebook and it would try but then say I have no internet connection, so I went and checked the dsl modem and it was all connected lights on it, so I wondered maybe the router bad? So I tried the modem directly into my laptop, same thing happening. Then a friend of mine said to reset the router and modem and see what happens. Well I tried to re connect it dumped half of my router settings, like it got rid of my security lock on my wireless connection and made it a open connection and now pops up, saying my firewall blocking and something about "policy provider:windows firewall, filter name:Query user", then after a restart on my laptop it now says..."cannot connect with primary DNS user xxx.xx.xxx.xxx"
I've been stuck with this issue for about a month now, and I am currently using a cell phone to get on here right now. If anyone could please help it would be greatly appreciated.
what are your modem and router model name and numbers?
Hey guys, having a few problems with my internet connection. I'm far from an expert so you'll have to bear with me.
I only get this problem on two wireless networks, either the one at my home, or the one in my University house. I get intermittent internet, it cuts out, sometimes after 10 minutes, sometimes an hour, and the only way to get it back is by resetting the router, and running a diagnose + repair from Network and Sharing Centre and then by Resetting the Wireless Router, which doesn't always fix the problem.
Sometimes I get a "Windows cannot connect to DNS Server" error, and sometimes it just fixes itself.
After a few quick searches, I've tried resetting WINSOCK entries to installation defaults (netsh winsock reset catalog) and reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults (netsh int ip reset reset.log) but this doesn't seem to have worked.
Here is the results of an iconfig/all on my system:

When I attempt to copy or move a file or folder from my Win7 box to my WinXP (SP3) media server, the operation nearly always fails. Take, for example, my trying to copy the VLC Media Player folder (704 files, 75.1 MB) from Program Files on Win7 to the C: drive on the media server via a mapped drive (X). In all cases, after hanging up at some point during the copy, I get this message:
Network Error
There is a problem accessing X:\<whatever current sub-folder copying is>
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again
I should note here that you only see the message come up if you wait for it (~1 min) after the copy hangs. If you try to cancel the hung copy before the message comes up, you can crash explorer.exe. I must also stress that there are no other access problems on the network. Files on the media server are accessible as expected from the Win7 box. Performing the same copy in reverse ("pulling" the same folder to the XP box from its console instead of "pushing" from Win7) works perfectly. All machines are in WORKGROUP and the same exact credentials are in use on all machines. All machines run the same version of Symantec Endpoint Protection and have firewall rules configured to allow all LAN traffic. All machines are connected through a Linksys SD2005 5-port GB "dumb" switch. Routing/DHCP is provided by a D-Link DI-604. ... Read more

Hello,
I need help with this Diskette issue please. "Diskette Drive 0 Seek Failure"
I've had this problem a few times in a couple of years and I have been able to fix the error by pressing F2 and going to the SETUP. And I've done this with no issues. But this time I thought I fixed it but now I get this new error: "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". After I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it takes me back to the same error massage "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Need help please. This is a Dell Desktop, Windows XP.
Thank you.

In Oulook Express (but I'm assuiming this is an issue in other email clients) my question is, what exactly happens when I "delete" a message from my inbox, in the TWO different cases depending on the setting for "leave a copy on the server"?
I want to have this setting checked on all my computers, and I will be responsible for deleting (on the SERVER, NOT just in my local copy on one computer) unwanted messages. My friend claims that a "delete" of a msg in my inbox only removes the local copy (when the "leave a copy" is checked). But I want to be able to delete on the SERVER, from any of my computers, so that the msg doesn't "come back" on another computer (sort of like what web-based email does, only I want this behavior with SMTP/POP). He says that to do this, I must have the "leave a copy" unchecked on at least one computer (of course in that case, getting the messages amounts to a server delete without any other specific "delete" action by me). But that means that I can't later get ANY of the msgs that were pulled by another of my computers, because all those msgs (not just the ones I want to delete) were deleted on the server. I don't mind having my various computers slightly out of sync (I can always sync them if needed) but I would like messages I DON'T delete to stay on the server. If I keep them ONLY in my local inbox, or copy to another local folder, I won't be able t... Read more
OK. Essentially this is how it works with POP3 mail that you are using. When mail is sent to your email address it gets stored in your ISP's mail server. You then connect to that server and download the mail off of the server onto your machine. Once the mail is on your machine, it is no longer left on the ISP's mail server.
That is the default behaviour but can be changed. If you go into your Account/Advanced tab and specify to leave the mail on the server, when you download the mail to your local machine, a copy will still be left on your server.
In both situations if you delete a message from your inbox, it will have no affect whatsoever on the mail on the server and will be deleted.
Now if you want to make it so that you can manage your mail and have the same mail on all computers, specify on each computer that the mail should be left on the server. Then if your ISP has a webmail interface, which almost all do, use that interface to clean up the already received email.
If there is no web interface, then your friend is right and you will need one machine to remove the mail from the server.

I have "SERVER", alive and well, even after installing SP3.
I really don't use it though and have it set to "Manual".
I just checked and I was able to 'Start' and 'Stop' Server.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.
I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.
The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".
This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".
Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":
The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:
I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:
Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

The errors are: "Genport I/O initialization failure", "grSstSelect: non-existent SST", and "wglCreateContact failed". All of these errors only give the option to choose "OK". What might be wrong?

Hi All,
Thanks in advance for any help.
I purchased and installed an Iomega 34766 NAS yesterday. I have three machines that run Windows 7 (2 - Ulitmate 32bit & 64bit; 1 - Professional 32bit) and a Windows xp machine.
I am having trouble getting the Windows 7 Professional 32bit machine to show the NAS as a computer under the network folder. It will show the NAS as a Media Device and Other device. I can access the device as a media device, but when I click other device, it opens a IE browser and errors out. I have not been able to map the device in windows explorer either. This NAS has a print server built in and it will not show the printer either.
My other two Windows 7 Ultimate 32 & 64 bit (Desktop-Windows & HTPC) machines work just fine and the NAS shows under the computer and media device and does not show as other device. The printer pluged in the NAS works like a charm.
The primary computer that I need to work is the windows 7 professional version (LPC-PC) thats not working.
I posted a screen shot of what I am looking at from the computer that does not work and one of the machines that is working.
As a side note, LPC-PC is my laptop and it is the machine that is not working. Desktop-Windows and HTPC are the two machines that it is working just fine on.

I need to get a GbE NIC for an older computer that will run as a server (OS undecided). In my shopping, I find that some cards are labeled as "server" cards and some "desktop" cards; there appear to be two versions of some cards.
What's the difference? Reliability, driver support, performance, features...?

Hello, I'm interested in the following:
Connecting "Desktop" to other partition than Windows "C:", so if I drop files on DSKT for easy reuse and availability, they copy on, f.e., "D:" or other partition.
Any way to achieve this?
Thank you.
I just go to the other partition or HDD, right-click the drive letter/icon and drag to the desktop choosing Create shortcut here. That works but it probably would be better to do the same with a Folder on the other drive. Dropping a file on the icon should copy or save it there.

Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping to get some help. I had a power outage while my WD Elements 1.5 TB Hard drive was on. I wasn't accessing it but apparently that was enough.
I had a lot of important data on it but losing hope after unsuccessful attempts to use PhotoRec to get items off it.
It doesn't show as accessible in MyComputer but is detected. I've included what it shows under the "Manage" view of the drive.
I've also tried MiniTool Partition but it doesn't seem to be able to fix the partition. I've also tried Partition Bad Disk and it just shows the whole 1.5 TB drive as one bad block. It won't let me fix it either.
Does anyone have any other bits of advice? I'm at a loss as what to do. It seems the data is not recoverable. I can't figure out how to get it to show or even how to use it again.
Please see attachments.
I'm grateful for any ideas/help please. Thank you.

Hello,
I have posted a related question some time ago, which was eventually resolved. However, after some time a problem with Easy Connect (used for MSRA) came back:

I cannot continue. (I have screenshots so can repost with them if that would clarity my question)
Any suggestion how to resolve would be appreciated.

The "Easy Connect" feature of "Windows Remote Assistance" requires IPv6. It is probably not installed on your PC... but, even if you installed it on your PC there is a reasonable chance that IPv6 is not working on your network router. Even if
your router and PC both support IPv6, it is unlikely the PC and router you are trying to remotely reach support IPv6... and so forth and so on...
Microsoft disabled the IPv6 tunneling server that supported "Easy Connect" in the middle of 2013 and this disabled the functionality of "Easy Connect". I assume the reason Microsoft did this is because it looks like the network-world is finally getting
ready to start using IPv6. Microsoft and many other IT corporations seem to be "clearing the decks" and preparing for this event. Just a guess on my part.
I have heard of individuals getting a point-to-point IPv6 Peer Name Resolution Protocol session going, but not in an over-the-internet environment.

We had a virus last week that in the task manager was: aaykpxfxsik.exe This virus wouldn't let you open the internet & it wouldn't let you bring up the task manager. When I tried to bring up the task manager, it would close after like 1 second. Somehow I managed to bring it up, right click & click the "close process tree" or whatever it's called & then everything seemed fine. I ran a scan with AdAware & I think I ran CCleaner & also ran a reboot scan with AdAware. I tried to find whatever the virus was in the System32 folder but didn't find anything suspicious.
Then today we got another virus. In the task manager, it's called sjd.exe & it's another virus that pops up wanting to scan your pc for virus's pretending it's an XP Security Center antivirus program. It's very similar to the virus from last week, but I can open & keep open task manager & can also close the virus's process...it comes back when you try to get on the internet or open Malware Bytes. My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.
Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.
I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

1 more repliesHi,
When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.
Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?
Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.
However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Can you access the Advanced boot options?
Advanced Boot Options
Choose Last known Good Configuration
Tip
Use the up-arrow and down-arrow keys to move the menu’s highlight to Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced), and then press Enter as the mouse won’t work at this screen.
Your computer should load successfully, and Windows 7 will discard the bad configuration and return permanently to the last known good configuration.

Hi guys!
So i tried installing windows 7 Home Premium using an empty HDD. The old OS was Vista, and it was located in the same HDD. I managed to install Windows 7 successfully, but when booting after the install it crashed right after the "starting windows" screen. It then gives me the choise between starting the startup repair tool, or to start windows normally. When i run the startup repair tool it can not fix the problem. I've tried different HDD but the problem still persists. The fact that I haven't got a clue what to do really annoys me. In addition it isn't even my own pc. My dad's vista started failing on him. So I figured: Hey, why not install windows 7 using my old disk from a pc I don't use anymore. I appreciate all help.

I tried to open a program (EverQuest 2) and it would open then immediately crash "EverQuest 2 has encountered an error". So I figured, reboot the machine. After the POST, it tells me to either launch start up repair or start normally. I chose start normally. It would go to the "starting windows" screen and the logo will not show up. it just stays there.
Powered down, and after the POST got the same options again. I picked start up repair this time. It would load the bar and show "loading windows files" or whatnot and when the bar would get completely full, it would freeze there.
My computer doesnt have a CD/DVD drive, I installed Windows 7 from USB. So I plugged the USB drive back into the computer and tried booting from that. It would go thru the "loading windows files" just fine, I can see the drive flashing as its being accessed. When the bar filled up, it would progress to "Starting Windows" screen, and stop blinking and just sit there... doing nothing. Tried using Safe Mode. Wouldn't load either.
I have not a clue what I should be looking for to even start getting it working again. The only physical change I've made to the system was plugging in another monitor to my graphic card. And even then, I've shut down and rebooted and it's been just fine.

Last winter I reformatted my HD and re-installed Windows 7 (64 bit). At that time I lost my Flight simulator game that I enjoyed a lot. Lately I tried to re-install my Flight Simulator game but I get the message "Error InstallShield Runtime". Is there a quick fix to this?
What is the exact game you are installing to check on its compatibility? Is this an installation from Disc or a download off the internet?
6 more repliesI have been using Dragon Natural Speaking 12 Premium for many months and all was going well until last week when I downloaded and installed an update. After that, whenever I open the program from the desktop icon, the "Loading" screen appears but nothing happens after that. Also, I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to end the program. (Right clicking on the tray icon and closing "close" does nothing. I have downloaded and used the DNS 12 uninstall "tool" several times and re-downloaded and installed the program, but the same thing happens, the program's "Loading" box appears but gets "stuck" there. I have asked the gurus at www.knowbrainer.com and on Nuance's Forums but they seem to be stumped with DNS's behavior after installing the update. Does anyone know what is happening? Thanks for any and all replies/suggestions.
Following Windows deciding to install its (presumably) latest updates this afternoon, I can no longer fully boot my machine. It powers up OK, the monitor has life, but the whole boot-up process sticks at the "screensaver?" page - in my case a stock Microsoft photograph looking out to sea and some large rocks from within a cave, the screen that appears before, normally, you can enter your pin to continue boot-up. In the bottom right-hand corner of this screen is what appears to be a Power Icon that I've not seen before and with a dreaded cross on it. Clicking on this does nothing. To compound the issue my DVD unit seems to no longer read discs (it opens and closes OK), I mention this in case relevant, but I am able to access the Bios options on booting.
I downloaded via another PC the Windows 10 install disc to USB from which I have attempted to boot, again without success, and have also tried various options that I have been able to access such as "Repair"as well as trying to restore the unit to the solitary restore point accessible, created around the time everything went wrong! The Restore failed too and frankly I'm out of ideas .. and frustrated to say the least!
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated, believe me!

Help - Please!!! My Desktop decided to install the Windows 10 updates to my Windows 7 environment -- oh the joys! Nothing but trouble ever since. I uninstalled 10 to take me back to 7.
Upon reboot all was fine for a day. Then, black screen with a cursor. What the heck? I checked all the things I was told to check, I ran all the diagnostics. I uninstalled, reinstalled, did a system restore back to before the update.
After spending 3+ hours letting my system go thru the recommended ePSA Preboot System Assessment (All Tests Passed) - Today I have a system that I can't get to boot up because it says I have:
Status: Oxc000000f
"The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."
I'm not a computer geek. I can't get thru to anyone at Dell. I've been trying to resolve this for 4 days now.
The only thing I can think that is happening is that the computer is trying to boot from an external hard drive that is in a "locked/password protected" mode on my system. I have no idea how to bypass this. I've tried unhooking the drive and rebooting and then it just goes back to black screen with a cursor.
Can anyone help me? Please?
Hi DEAR64,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
Please check if you can boot into safe mode <F8>.
Do you have the OEM Operating system DVD?
Please private message us the service tag of the system along with your email id (Note: please don't mention the service tag or email id on the public forum as it contains your personal information).
Ok well my computer when turned on gets to the screen that says
"windows closed unexpectedly"..etc and gives the options of
"safe mode"
"safe mode with netwroking"
"safe mode with command prompt"
"start windows normally"
"start windows with most recent working config" (or something similar)
Im sure most of you are familiar with this screen, when any of the options is selected
the computer begins to start up but then makes a struggling noise and returns to that screen
we can get past it.
If someone could help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I was using ubuntu on my old shuttle xpc and decided it wasn't doing it for me software-wise so tried to reinstall windows xp. Everytime i tried to boot xp i would get so far and then get a message " The file dac2w2k.sys is corrupted press any key". I tricked around with different bios settings with no joy so then went to "restore fail safe bios" (something like this). Now when I turn on the machine i just get to the first screen with the intel picture and cant get any further. I've tried going into the boot screen but it just says "loading boot menu" and nothing happens. Same happens when i try to get into the bios. My knowledge of the hardware workings of a pc is little to none so i've no idea how to reset the bios, if this is in fact the problem. Could anyone advise me? I would be so grateful. Thanks
Hello,In order to reset the bios: 1 Unplug your computer from the wall.2 Open up the side of the computer case.3 On the motherboard there is a little button cell battery. Take it out.4 Leave the battery out for about 5 min. 5 Put the battery back in and your bios should now be reset.

I've attached logs of the dump files. I plan on putting in an older graphics card and seeing if I can get my computer to start, but I thought I'd post here first.
You are correct in that the dumps are blaming your NVidia gfx drivers for the crash, first step would be to uninstall/reinstall the latest drivers using DDU or driver sweeper to clear out
If it still fails try the same again using an older version, if it still fails try your other gpu
Basically what you are doing/have already done
Hi there, I've been having problems with an inherited computer recently, I got it after the owner said they were experiencing problems and the repair guys estimated it would cost as much as a computer to fix so they bought a new one.
I think this was just a case of lazyness by the repair guys so I took it home and tried to start it. it wouldn't boot into windows so formated I loaded windows 7 U 66 and boom it worked.
Now I've had a few BSODS on it and updated what I could with different websites from microsoft and HP I can't figure out what is causing it
ranging from "irql not less or equal" to "fage fault in non paged area" and "bad pool header"
Any Ideas?
Please run a SFC.

I sent an email to a few hundred people and for around 40 of them i got this "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" email back. I understand that its not a Fail message and this this is one of those "there are no stupid questions" things but i would like to know:
What does this mean anyway?
Does the person receive my email if i do not get a Failure message after this?
Is there a way that i will not receive this message and only receive total failure messages?
I had the a few hundred other messages go through fine so i don't understand what causes this to happen to just a few dozen emails.
Thank you for being kind to Stupid Questions
Let's say I work for a company whose email goes to abc.com; you send to me at [email protected] and get one of those messages back. The message means, in essence, that your mail got to abc.com, but some kind of problem with the system prevented the message from being sent to my actual mail server or computer. It's possible that the reason my be that I was fired and you will eventually get a "hard" failure message, but generally it means that abc will fix their system and the message will eventually get to me.
I'm sure there are some exceptions but, in general, I will get the message if you don't latter get a "hard" failure message.
Hi all, This is a great forum you have here! OK I am having a very low-tech month I think. I am trying to trouble shoot a problem with my system which had been running reasonably well until now -- I say reasonably well because lately I seem to have hit some hardware challenges. More on that later, however (if required).
In order to trouble shoot my issues, I find myself needing to reinstall Windows 7 (My boot disk which is an SSD seems to cause the system to hang when it is connected so I am trying to install a new verion of Win 7 to troubleshoot the other from). Now I have ample space on a couple of drives so that is where I targeted. Everything runs fine in the installation process, the system reboots and I am presented the screen to enter a system name. I enter a name but the "next" button is protected and not clickable . Does this mean anything to anyone?
This seems very rudimentary but frankly I can't find anything to make it go

Have tried to install Win 8. Presently running Win 7 (single PC).
Everything goes fine until I come to input screen asking for password to either "login to network" or "login to go online" (don't remember exactly).
Have no idea what this password is. Can anyone tell me what is going on here and how best to determine the required password.....
Thanks in advance as I am really stuck here.

Within a network (accessing a workgroup share), you need the user name and password used on the network machine.
2 more repliesHello. Hope everybody is doing fine.
So, after installing another 4GB stick of RAM and my trusted SSD, it was time for a refresh on the WEI. But before I get to that, let me take you back a few days ago, when I got myself a new laptop (), a Lenovo Z710 (i3-4000M, GT 745M, 4GB DDR3L [email protected] mHZ, 1TB Seagate SSHD with a 8GB SSD for caching) and since I couldn't accept its performance, I got down to business (note to self: MUST also update my system specs ).
Step 1: I installed another 4GB of RAM DDR3 from my previous laptop (you can get it on my system specs as they are now) running at 1.5v, with no problems whatsoever. Before doing this, I had checked via the trusted HWiNFO64 that the pre-installed stick was a module of dual nominal voltage so I wouldn't fry the poor DDR3L. Ran WEI, got a 7,4 score on memory (in fact I was kinda disappointed but anyways), had no BSODs, no freezes, no nothing. But the SSHD was just low (the 8 GB of caching were literally nowhere) and that was the time I decided to go to
Step 2: and get myself a new clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a Samsung 840 EVO SSD, with EVERYTHING in order (I had a few troubles finding the right driver for my wireless adapter though but I managed ) and decided to rerun the assessment.
To my great surprise, the test can't get past the "Direct3D 10 Batch Assessment", gets stuck there for about 5 minutes, maybe more and then I got the dialog box below. I am able to play MMO's and MMORPG games without any... Read more
Update:
Problem solved! It seems that the culprit for the "hung" of the aforementioned assessment was the latest drivers for the Intel HD 4600 and specifically, the CMAA (Conservative Morphological Anti-Aliasing) setting under the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel, which was set to "Override Application Settings" option. I don't know if it would work with the latest drivers which include this setting because I installed the previous one, just to be safe.
For anyone out there facing the same problem but determined to have the latest drivers installed, I recommend picking the "Turn Off" or "Enhance Application Settings" option (whichever permits the Direct3d Batch Assessment to run) and re-rate his/her computer.
Hope that will help.
P.S.: I mark this thread as solved as for me it is. If anyone has any insight on this matter, please feel free to share. I would be glad to hear it.
I have a laptop with Windows 7. I was playing games on it today and suddenly browser closed. Then everything else closed and logged out and my laptop completely shut down. When I tried to turn it on again, a blank black screen with a flashing underscore "_" comes up and none of my keys work. The F8 key does nothing. I have turned it off and on many times. Please help!
StarJune,
Welcome to TSG.
From your description of the fairly normal but unrequested shutdown, this could possibly be a windows update that failed.
What type of laptop is it? Do you have the Operating System disk? If not you can and probably should order one from the manufacturer.
Take a look at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7
I would attempt a Startup Repair first, then try System Restore.
Hello all,
I have a Compac desktop, it's relatively new as far as use. Recently, it's not been used because of a startup issue. It will load the first screen (The compac screen and act like it's it going to load up) but then loops back to the first screen and continue to do this over and over. My mother told me that the computer had fallen off of out computer hutch (About 2 inches off the ground) and heard an interesting noise inside. She described the sound like a CD hitting the floor, but I looked inside the desktop, and nothing seemed to be out of place.
I want to get the data files and documents, but as stated above, I cannot use the computer.
I have a Ubuntu CD already made, and have used it before.. Unfortunately, the CD drive doesn't seem to be recognizing the disc. I can see the little white blinking "-", but that is all I can get to come up before the screen goes into another loop; and the previous process.
I was hoping some one could possibly help me out in getting the computer to the point to save the data? I have the option to reformat the whole computer, but I'd rather save that for last measures if the data cannot be recovered.
Again, the computer is a compac, Windows XP OS, desktop - only about 3 years old.
Should I do a hard shut down? Then what?
Hi Bmart,
if its installing updates or a repair install id say NO, causes major problems, otherwise Yes.

Dell N4110
I wish I could get an error code on it, perhaps you guys can enlighten me.
So I upgraded a couple weeks back to Win10 and it's been running sleeping restarting etc. Just fine. Then at random it shut down and has been stuck while trying to boot. I can get to the "Continue/Troubleshoot/Turn off your PC screen but even when I've tried to "Reset this PC" it just hangs there, even after leaving the machine untouched for a full 24 hours...
Maybe someone can help me get an error code first so I can specify what's up. Also as mentioned I cannot boot past the troubleshoot screen.
BIG TIA folks
I had something like this, when resetting PC back to factory settings from my USB recovery stick wouldn't work, even when everyone seemed to think it should. I had to get myself into StartUp Options area, launch command prompt, blow away all my partitions and then run recovery USB to get it to work.

14 more repliesHi -
I'm trying to install XP Pro onto a brand new SATA hard drive since my old one seems to have gone kaput after about 5 years.
I booted from CD, and went thru all the screens to the point where it was ready to start the installation. When i got to the screen to partition the "mass storage device", i got the following:
Unknown Disk
(There is no disk in this drive.)
Unknown Disk
(There is no disk in this drive.)
So i found an old post on this site (http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/823885-solved-unknown-disk-error.html) and followed the lessons learned there, and realized I had a floppy for a RAID DRIVER i had forgotten about (it came with the components I bought to build this box). So i tried the installation again, starting from a reboot, and hitting F6 at the right time. When it came time to install the 3rd party driver, i inserted the floppy as instructed, and hit Enter. The floppy light came on, but i don't believe i heard it do anything, and the screen asking me to insert the floppy quietly came back.
I tried a couple times, but still the floppy did not do its magic. I continued, and the partition screen still showed the Unknown Disk error. So as suspected, the driver did not get installed. I then rebooted, this time hitting F1 to check out the BIOS. My BIOS recognizes both my new hard drive and the floppy drive just fine, and the floppy itself can be read just fine on another PC.
Could this be a floppy controller problem? is there a simple w... Read more

More repliesHello all, I'm not sure if this is an operating system question or more of a software development question.
Anyway, I have a legacy COM service, a COM server that runs as a windows service, that was written for Windows NT 4.0. I have managed to use the service on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP unchanged. However, I now wish to run the service on a Windows Server 2003 machine and I can't seem to get it to work.
This is what happens:-
1. Install the service and set it to log on using a domain account.
2. Start the service from the services.msc applet.
3. Start the client application and connect to the service.
4. At this stagte the client applicaiton freezes for approximately 60 seconds and then returns with the error message "Server execution failed".
I've also tried using the client whilst the service is stopped. In this case when I connect the service is started but I get the same error.
The development team also provided a standalone application that hosts the exact same COM objects, mainly for debugging purposes. If I use the standalone application everything works fine.
Its all very strange.
Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be? And preferably a solution.
Thanks,
Kep.
I found the answer.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroup...-DC48AB0DA5C9&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us
The above discussion says that a service must enter a running state before a COM server calls CoRergisterClassObject. So I guess its a development problem.
Not sure why it only manifests on Windows Server 2003 though.
Kep.
I'm wondering if there is any way to copy files or folders from the C drive using the Windows XP Home disk's repair prompt mode without receiving a denial of access. What happened was while in the process of trying to remove a virus, I accidently deleted something associated with windowslogon.exe. Now I'm unable to get on Windows in any way. I plan to reformat my computer to fix the problem, but I want to copy several folders from my C drive to my D partition so I do not loose them. Is there a way to gain access to the content on the C drive, specifically My Documents, using the XP disk's repair mode, or perhaps another way of copying files from C to D? Or even a way to repair windowslogon.exe without clearing my hard drive?
Okay, I had this problem once...while installing SP2, the setup froze and I had access problems. I don't know if there's an easier way (and, knowing me, there probably is...), but I installed Windows XP on the D drive, booted from THAT copy of XP, copied necessary files over from C, reformatted C, copied necessary files over from D, and then formatted D to get rid of the second copy of Windows...
That may be the long exhaustive way to do things...but it worked for me...
Urgent help needed please?
Hi built this system back in February / March this year and it has been running fine until a couple of weeks back whilst just viewing a web page and not even touching the mouse I suddenly got a BSOD now not sure if this is relevant but I had been on holiday for 2 weeks before and remember when powering down the day before it had a lot of updates to install before shutting down.
Unable to get it to boot although I did manage to get into safe mode once and did a system restore and it ran for 90 minutes before another BSOD so I thought I would do a fresh install but it only goes as far as
Press any key to load from DVD/CD then ?loading files? and then ?starting windows? and the BSOD again.
Now I have been around computers since the ZX81 days but have been unable to sort this problem, first I thought the mobo had gone down and change it to an Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 but still the same BSOD.
Changed out the SSD for a Samsung 840 EVO but still the same.
Now I have just tried an AMD Phenom II x4 965 but still the same.
I have also pressed the memory check button on the mobo and all ok, I have also changed the sata cables.
I have removed 2 of the graphics cards so now only running on one (I have also tried each of the others).
Thinking it was virus as if I left it after the ?press any key to load? It came up with bootmgr missing which is why I fitted a new SSD.
Now I am sure everything is set ok in the bios but I may have missed something obvious... Read more
