Computer freezing entirely, odd pictures popping up on screen while computer turns on

Question: Computer freezing entirely, odd pictures popping up on screen while computer turns on

My laptop is a Gateway 450 ROG and it has had this problem for the last week. It will run for roughly 40 minutes, and then (even when small programs are running) it will freeze up. My mouse wont move, no command will respond and i am forced to hold the power button and shut it off.
2nd Problem, occasionally when i turn on the computer it wont boot up. The screen will turn on and stop with a dash blinking in the top left corner, not proceeding to any boot up of any kind, and just recently while i shut it down from this sort of freezing up, little pictures of pixel hearts and dots started appearing until i shut it off. This problem has gone on since i bought this computer from my brother but the pictures havent until this last week .
Here is my Hijackthis log:

Preferred Solution: Computer freezing entirely, odd pictures popping up on screen while computer turns on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Computer freezing entirely, odd pictures popping up on screen while computer turns on

Hello snow_yehti and welcome,

Unfortunately, there is nothing readily apparent in this log. We'll run a few tools and see if any malware is revealed.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the programOnce you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on " Recommended actions" and then select " Quarantine".
Under "Reports"Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. (Not Recommended for XP64).

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! or move them to a permanent location.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users
Click on the "Temporary Files" and uncheck the box for "Scan drives for file matching" if it's checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT reboot/logoff when prompted.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions" **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
**AVG Anti-Spyware is compatible with most AV and anti-spyware products, and the free version will continue to be useful as a second anti-malware scanner.

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.
Click on see report. Then click Save report

Hi, I'm trying to transfer some photos from a Fuji A860 camera to my PC using the USB cable. For some reason every programme I try to use to transfer the pictures does not work, my computer just freezes completely and I can't use either the mouse or the keyboard. So far I've tried using the software that came with the camera, windows photo gallery, picasa 3 - each time it imports maybe 10 or 12 photos and then just freezes. I have nearly 200 photos on the card and I really need to transfer them! I'd be grateful for any suggestionsThanks

Answer:Computer freezing when trying to transfer pictures

Have you tried plugging the card directly into the PC and not via the camera?

Hello everyone - I am a new member of the forum and hope that someone reading this might be able to help me with a problem I have with my computer.

In recent weeks the computer screen keeps freezing with the cursor being replaced by the hour glass symbol. This usually happens after several hours' computer usage - but sometimes it occurs soon after the computer is turned on.

When this happens, I am unable to log off; the computer on/off button does not work when the screen freezes and I have to turn the computer off at the mains.

In order to be able to log back into my broadband internet connection I have to turn the computer and and off twice and then on again .

Sometimes when the computer screen image freezes a message box appears always saying "End programme" (i.e. "End programme - CiceroUIWndFrame" or "End programme - mixer").

My computer runs on the Windows XP operating system.

I changed from Internet Explorer browser 6 to 7 yesterday but the problem of the computer screen freezing persists.

Any helpful advice on this would be much appreciated.

Answer:My computer screen keeps freezing and I have to keep turning the computer on and off

How old is your computer? Have you ever reinstalled your OS?

What I usually recommend is if your computer is at least a couple of years old and have yet to do a clean install of your Operating System now is the time, especially when it starts acting up =)

CPU: AMD 6400 duo core
RAM: 4gigs
Video: Geforce 8900

I was playing a game when the system just turned off. Prevously, I had a few times it reboot. The system will turn on ( fans and leds' ) and HD loads and CD loads but I get no video on monitor nor do I hear any system beeps or seems like it is getting past the BIOS load. I took the machine to a shop and they said my PSU was bad... So I purchased a new one online since nobody locally carries anything above a 450w same one as I had before 700W. I installed new PSU but I get the same simptoms.

I took out the motherboard out of the case and put only 1 stick of ram in it reseated the cpu with heatsink and fan with new heat paste. Plugged in the VGA adaptor for onboard video. Plugged power into the motherboard at the main adaptor and the cPU 12v. I short the power swt to turn it on and I get the same thing. Fans turn on LED on. No beeps or video. I tried a 2nd speaker and tried again no change. Any suggestions?

Answer:Computer turns on but no screen

It's possible you let your computer get too hot and it burnt up the motherboard... that or possibly the graphics card... if it's getting power but not posting, then it's not your power supply, although it may have been bad too. It's either going to be your motherboard, graphics card, or processor... a failure in either three could cause it to not show up... You saying it doesn't have any bios beeps leads me to believe it's either the motherboard or the processor, not just the graphics card.

Ok, I've been going through some of my old stuff and found some old computers, and i've been trying to build a system from different parts. These are the following:

Videocard: 7600gt
Motherboard: P4 Titan 533 GA-8SR533
CPU: Pentium 4. (im 99.99% sure, but the written stuff has been rubbed off =(..)
PSU: Codegen 300W

I've built this system, took it apart, dusted it all off did EVERYTHING i can to try and fix it. When i try and turn it on, it turns on, (i can tell by the fans spinning and lights turning on the MB) but nothing comes up on the screen. I know its not the monitor because when i plugged the monitor out of the videocard, it says no signal on the screen. When i turn the computer on im pretty sure its not the videocard because the screen's power is blinking with green? (thats what i read from the internet )

So i tried my best to fix up this old computer, and the last option i need is anything involving MONEY, (Im veryyy short on money atm...)

Thankss =]

Answer:Computer turns on but nothing on screen

Have you installed the drivers for the 7600GT ?
That is probably not the problem, but the card may be defective... How do you know the video card is good? If not working, it may not show anything on the screen.
Can you test it in a friend's machine?

My computer's screen recently turns off once in a few hours. Sometimes days.
Before it turns off, the computer gets stuck for 2 seconds.

I wonder if it's overheating of the CPU or something else.

What do you think?

Answer:Computer screen turns off

I've connected another screen to my PC and it just turned off, so the PC itself is the problem.
Any idea what can cause this?

Ok so my brothers computer will turn on but there is no screen, it says "no Signal".

heres the story. When I unplug the computer from the wall then plug it back in, it will turn on automatically. The computer will also not show anything on the screen..I've tried changing out power supplies, video cards (the current video card he is using is on board, I switched to after market) I also tried changing all power cords and display cords. I'm not sure what else it could be other than maybe the motherboard or harddrive? Its a Dell with windows xp I don't know much more about it other than its not a pavilion is a custom build from a local dealer. Any and all insight/advice would be helpful, thank you.

Answer:Computer Turns on but no screen?

Try clearing the CMOS. There should be a jumper on the motherboard labeled "CMOS CLEAR". If you can't find this jumper, then remove the battery, unplug the computer from the wall, and push the power button. After this it should boot. If it does not boot make sure that the PC Speaker is plugged in to the appropriate jumper and pay attention to the code coming from it.

Report back with your findings as clear and concise as possible.

So one day a week or two ago I turned on my PC to say that it had an issue and it needed the windows installation disk to repair it. So I put the disk into the PC and I clicked repair and it took a long time but it said all issues are resolved. I was happy as I thought I solved my problem, however, to my disappointment I was wrong. The computer reset and I saw the dell logo and the loading bar moving across and everything however after I wait the screen turns black but i can still see my mouse cursor and if I move the cursor around I can see it move but just my wallpaper is not there, the windows bar is not there, my folders and shortcuts aren't there nothing is. I tried pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up task manager but that does not work. I didn't make a backup recently and I put the repair disk back in and I scan for issues and it says there are no issues. I'm at a loss here and I'm desperate. I have all of my photos that I have taken from my vacations over the past 4 years and I can't get to them so I was really hoping that you guys could help me fix my PC. If anyone could  help me I would gladly appreciate it.

Hey Jason,
Some times 3rd Party software creates conflict during the startup.
You can try booting into Safe mode with Networking and disable unwanted 3rd Party Startup Programs and services from MSCONFIG and Task Manager in case of windows 8. You can also run a malwarebytes scan to check for Malwares.

Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... I have an Ispiron 530s desktop (XP Home). When I try to turn on the computer, the CPU fan is very loud and constant. I get no desktop. Both the monitor and the computer on/off button are amber color, no green. What could be the problem? What should I check first?

Answer:Computer turns on to blank screen

Usually the amber color indicates a power problem... as if your power adapter or cable to the power adapter is broken, or the power socket is damaged.

Recently my computer started acting up and shutting down randomly while under high load. Now it won't even boot into the bios and I'm left with a blank screen. On my motherboard I'm getting an error 62 (Installation of PCH runtime services) and when I tried using a new graphics card, I would get an A6 error (Detection of SCSI devices). Anyone know what's going on and how I can fix these errors? I am under the assumption right now that I fried my gpu but before I just go and buy a new one I'd like to be sure my problem is not solvable without new parts.

Ok so, im trying to help my friend with her broken computer.
She got hit with the avsoft virus, It took me a while but I finally got malwarebytes on her system, and had to rename the .exe in order to get it to run in safemode and it seemed to have worked pretty well, i then wanted to boot it in normal mode and run a full scan to make sure we got everything.
Anyway, we were experimenting with it for whatever reason (i guess malware removal had us feeling brave) and we unhooked her monitor, and plugged her desktop computer via the monitor cord into my laptop. i know that you can plug a monitor into a laptop and use that instead of the laptop screen, so we wanted to see if it would work with the desktop instead of the monitor. You know, like use my laptop as the monitor and keyboard.
I went into the my laptops nvidia control panel and messed around with some of the settings
All of a sudden my laptop screen went black.
I just rebooted, and my laptop was fine but when we plugged her monitor back into her desktop and rebooted it would not reboot correctly.

The lights on the computer would turn on, you can hear it is running, the fans are running, it makes one beep, just like a normal startup. the screen displays a logo (not the windows logo) an everex logo for a few seconds, and then some text comes up (like normally) and looks like it proceeds to load but it flies by so quick you cant read it, and then nothing. A big black blank screen.

First off, this is my first time on these forums, and i'm not sure if it's in the correct ones, so if an admin can move it or something? thx,

Allright, so about 2 and a year ago i bought my MSI, which i've been enjoying quite a lot. I use it daily for gaming and school related work, but 2 days ago, the screen suddenly turned black (while gaming) and then said a kind of "RRRRRR" noise. I restarted it, and it worked fine again.

Today, the computer did the same thing 4 times, expect that the screen turned light blue this time. It still said the "RRR" sound, I update my drivers regularly, and i just updated them before it happened again. Restarting works by the way.

I'm using a MSI GT663R, with these specs:
CPU: Intel core I7-720QM
VGA: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 460m / 1,5GB DDR5
LED Panel: 15,6 FHD, 1920x1080 (Glare Type)
Ram: DDRIII 6GB (2GB*3)
HDD: 1TB (500GB*2 RAID 0) 7200RPM
RF: 802.11b/g/n

That's atleast what it says on the sticker on the PC, note that i'm not very good with computers and i'm really hoping to get a simple fix, because i don't want to use money to get it repaired if not necessary.

Thank you really much in advance, i really love my PC, and it was quite expensive, for what i earn, so i really hope it isn't broken or something similar

Inverters and bad backlights can be hard to diagnose without just replacing the parts but it sounds as one or the other is out/going out.
If you check these out yourself, good luck. Laptops are a bear and unless you've done a few, a repair shop may be best.
Good luck.

My configuration is Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, X1950XTX Radeon, 2gb ram, 250HD, 500w powersupply.
So one day I'm using my computer, which had been working wonders for 3 months, and it just shuts down. Then it wouldn't turn back on, at all, no power anywhere. So, I replaced the power supply. I made no other changes other than the power supply. Now it powers up, all the fans turn on (including from the video card), LED light turns on, even the CD rom driver works but I get nothing at all on the screen. And since i get a blank screen with both of my monitors I can't see how it's a monitor problem. I also get no beeps when I turn the computer on, and although I am not sure, I think the hard drive disk spins.

I can't see how it would be the video card since it was previously working and nothing changed on that. The only thing that makes sense to me is that when the old power supply broke the motherboard or, i hope not, the CPU got damaged. Has anyone seem or heard of someone having a similar problem? What Should I try? How can I find out if its the mother board or the CPU malfunctioning? Thank you for the help.

Answer:Computer Turns on but Screen is Blank! Tried Everything, Please Help!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First things first, when you installed the new PSU, did you connect the power cord to your graphics card? Did you connect two power connections to your motherboard? Both the 24 pin and the ATX12v connectors?

Assuming you did, I'd strip down to the basics to help with the troubleshooting. Remove your motherboard from the case, and set it on a box beside your case. Intall ONLY the cpu/heatsink, one stick of ram and your graphics card (unless you have onboard graphics as well, in which case do not install your graphics card).

Connect the case's speakers to the motherboard.

Connect your monitor to the graphics, and then use a screwdriver to quickly "short" the two pins normally connected to the case's power on switch.

Tell us exactly what happens at this point. What lights are on, what fans are spinning, and what beeps you are getting. Good luck!

Also, please give us your motherboard make/model number, as well as your PSU maker name.

So, obviously I don't know whats wrong with my computer. I play WoW and that shouldn't be to hard on my system. Whenever I play, my screen goes all wonky after awhile, sometimes its 10min, sometimes it'll last an hour. There will be bars going across the screen and the graphics will be all screwed up. Sometimes my monitor will just shut itself off and won't turn back on, I'll have to restart to get it to turn on again. Other times my computer will beep and shut off completely, sometimes a blue screen will come up with a bunch of writing, but it turns off so fast that I don't have time to read what it says. Its usually fine doing anything else, browsing the net or even watching a movie, its when I play a game it gets all screwed up. When I'm not even touching the computer it occassionly turns off! Well idk if it actually turns off but my tower will go completely silent, then it will start up again but it'll be on the exact same screen it was on to begin with, it doesn't restart... idk what it does. But when that happens a msg comes up saying 'usb device not recoginized' and i have no usb devices plugged in that are not recognized. The unknown device is apparently 'Universal Serial Bus controllers'... idk what that is, but when i look in my device manager thats the only unknown device. Hopefully someone can help me!

After running my computer for approximately 10 to 20 minutes the monitor shuts down without any warning and simultaneously the sound cuts off, rending my computer unresponsive and useless. I suspect it's overheating but I have never experienced these issues before, they are obviously obstructing my work.

I have an ADM Radeon HD 5670 and I have never experienced or noticed the device reaching over 60 Celsius. The ventilator works within normal parameters as far as I can see with the Catalyst Control software and as far as I know all drivers are up-to-date.

I have posted my system information in a previous post regarding BSOD here in case it is of any relevance.

I hope someone is able to provide me with some help, I'd hate to buy a new video card.

Answer:Screen turns off, computer frozen.

The PC itself shuts off or is it still on? This is an important factor!

If it just completely shuts off, most likely one of these:

You could be having a power supply going bad.

You could have a dead case fan.

Thermal paste and/or heatsink/fan on CPU has failed in some way.

Heating failure is something that just shows up one day, so welcome to the wonderful world of PCs.

I have a compaq computer running on windows vista home basic, I have a problem when I start the system, the desktop loads ok but then after about 30 sec the display turns white and I am unable to get the desktop back, I have restarted the system a number of times but the same thing keeps happening.
When the display turns white there is a strange message on their which you would get if you were trying to load a web-page but had no internet connection.
I have 2 users on the computer one works fine I can go in there and use the internet but the other is where I have the problem, and this is where all my work files are.

Can anyone give me any tips.

Hi Everyone,
This is my first time posting on these forums. I have a dell inspiron 5447, and I love it. It looks great, and, for the most part, runs well. However, whenever I move the laptop, or even slightly touch it, whether i move the screen or touch the body of the laptop, the screen glitches on and off, sometimes a few times in quick succession. When this happens, the touchpad also disables itself, and sometimes turns itself back on, but I usually have to go in to mouse settings and disable the mousepad and reenable it for it to work. I am thinking I need to send it in to be repaired, but I am not sure what the problem could be, or how much it may cost. I am also a college student that needs a laptop, so I cannot be without one for a long time.

Thank you for your help.

Answer:Computer Screen turns on/off, touchpad does the same.

Please run the diagnostic tool to check the hardware on the system by following steps below.
1. Power off the system. Remove all peripherals except AC adapter
2. Power on system, quickly start tapping the F12 continuously until you see Preparing one time boot menu in the top right corner of the screen. In the boot menu, stroll down to Diagnostic and then click on it.  After quick tests, click on Hard drive, and select Thorough Test Mode.

Hi I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and I got it for my birthday, I think I got it on the 13th of September, it worked completely fine for a long time and then I can remember one day I just would not turn on, I tried and tried to get it to turn and it just wouldn't do it, the next morning it turned right on...with no problem at all, and then it was fine until about the end of January, then it turned off once and I got it to come back on after trying several times, then the next day when I went to use it again, it would turn on but the screen would not work, and it has been like this ever since, I have gone on the dell technical support website and they were no help at all. They had me taking out the hard drive, and the media board, and all of this other stuff and they didn't tell me anything, all they basically had me do was take it apart and put it back together. My father bought me this computer and it was the last birthday present I got from him before he passed away, so I am deeply attached to it. So if there is anything anyone can tell to do to fix this I would greatly appreciate it. THANK YOU.

Answer:Computer Turns on but Screen Does Not... Please reead this

Could be a number of things most likely your graphics card/ monitor, is your computer situated in a particulary warm or cold place?

Checked the fuse?

Is the environment particularly dusty?

Do the cables look secure in there ports?

Have you tried holding in the power button on your computer without any power leads in?

these are some basics to try, if that doesn't work we need to address a deeper issue.

Hi, at first I thought this might be virus related. I went through with help from Howard_Hopkinso, and removed all virus' and malware. But my problem persists.

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Turns out all my problems were an aged battery, according to the tech shop who reinstalled windows after some deeprooted viruses. But now my laptop won't shut down all the way, but the screen turns off. The keyboard's LEDs stay on, and the fan keeps blowing. It stayed that way for at least five minutes, between me getting a snack and coming back. I don't know if they reinstalled from the disc that shipped with the laptop or gave me a knew windows 7, but this particular issue only started when they reinstalled the OS.

After getting a couple blue screens I am having the following issue:

When I turn my computer on, the fans and drives all start up. After approx. 2 seconds the computer shuts itself off. After another 2 seconds the computer turns itself back on again. This time it stays on but i have no monitor output. I don't hear a beep which tells me it is probably not posting.

I have read a few other threads that have a similar issue but not the same. I am thinking it is either the mobo, GPU, or PSU.

I would like any guidance and assistance that you guys can give me on this specifically what i should look at first and how to diagnose. Thanks. system specs below:

ASUS P5Q Pro ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896-P3-1265-AR Video Card
Antec EA650 650W Power Supply
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Memory

Answer:Computer turns on, turns off then turns back on but has no video output

Motherboard Short

I have helped somebody who had a similar issue and it was the motherboard being shorted out by the case. We took the motherboard out of the case and it booted up just fine. Something you might want to try before purchasing new components.

Hello all

Just got myself this (old) new computer, that I was going to use for a media center. But it randomly crashes, and i can't seem to figure out why. I formated it yesterday, so I doubt it would be a virus.

Sometimes it goes black, and picture returns within a few seconds, but other times it freezes up completely. When I restart it (with the power button) I cant get pasted the BIOS screen, but if I unplug the power supply, and hit the power button a few times and then plug in the power, it starts up like normal. (does that make it a RAM issue?)

Freezes have happened doing the following: Using XBMC (both in menus and while watching a video), while Internet Download Manager was running. While file transfer was running, and a few times while i wasnt at the computer.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
ATI Radeon HD 5670
Intel Core i3 CPU
Phillips TV (Connected with HDMI)

Let me know if you need any other information.

The problems you describe typically mean hardware problems. Please follow the to provide us with your system logs and application logs. Those can help to find software conflicts, system errors, application errors, and sometimes point to hardware problems, as well. You do not have to be getting a blue screen crash for those to help us determine the cause of your problems.

Got the computer from a family member, I tried fixing it for them first and I thought it was the video card so I tried a different one and still nothing. So it was unplugged and stored for months then they just gave it to me. Well I took it home and started messing with it turned it on a cple of times nothing. Moved wires around put different psu in nothing, put it back to normal it started right up powered screen up I got into windows but it had a lot of lag so I went to restart it so I could do a fresh install and screen shut off... note when it wasn't working before this point the cpu fan ran at full rpm when turned on but slowed down when it worked this first time. I turned it on and off cple times nothing unplugged psuand back in it worked enough to reinstall windows and went to restart nothing. When plugged my speakers in to see if it beeps it started up! Its toying with me, restarted it again nothing so next try I pushed on the cpu thinking the mobo was bad it started up and woked for a cple restarts and quit... I tightened. The mobo screws down to the case and worked for awhile and then started acting up on restart. It will turn on once after it sits awhile unplugged with the bios battery out. I'm confused... bad bios or the mobo? I have unplugged all things that aren't needed for start up different hd with same effect. Only thing I haven't tried yet is the ram. Answer:computer turns on but screen stays black

The PSU was probably bad, replacing it should have fixed it. There may be bad caps on the motherboard or something is grounding on the MOBO to the case and causing it to not boot. Take everything apart. Take Heat Sync off of processor and apply Thermal Paste. Take MOBO out of case and check to see if there are any burn marks, bad caps, or if there are any risers missing off the case keeping the MOBO from touching the case.

This computer has been working since 2013, and just lately have I have been having issues. When turning on the computer, the computer sounds perfectly fine, all fans and everything works. There is no damaged, or burnt anything inside the computer. When turning on the computer my keyboard & mouse do not turn on, and the computer light works and doesn't work. I have tried everything that I can think of and anything that I have researched on the HP guides. And my computer still does not work. I have tried changing monitor, and the cables that connect to these monitors. I have bought a new PowerSupply and that made it work but once I had to restart it it did not turn back on (nothing pops onto the screen, it is black) I have a GTX Geforce 750ti FTW graphics card and nothing is damaged or misplaced. All connectors and connecitons work properly. I have reset the computer several times and it still does not work. Just now when turning on the computer the light (the botton) does not turn on, but the computer does indeed turn on. I don't understand that if there was something seriously wrong with the computer why it would sometimes work and sometimes not? If the motherboard was bad it wouldn't be working period, let alone working.  I really need some help, thank you.

Heys, nice to meet everyone.
Well my first problem is that ever since i got my pc (6 yrs ago) it frequently restarted. So i turned off automatically restart & frequently got bsods. The first was DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL & the second one was PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. I searched on google the problems and it said something about my NIC & Sound Driver. So i decided to open up my computer and try to swap my NIC whilst in the process just check out my graphics card and my ram to see if it was faulty, After that i turned on my computer and at first it beeped, then made this screechy sound for a split second and i smelt something weird. After that i turned it off re-inserted the RAM, NIC, GC & when i turn it on i get a blank screen. Both my cd drives keep resetting or blinking and wont open up, All my fans work & the red light and green light under my power button just stays there.

Specs of my computer:
- Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
- NVIDIA Geforce4 MX440SE 64mb
- PC333 512mb RAM x 2 (1024mb)
- 80GB HD + 120GB HD
- GIGABYTE Motherboard (MODEL: GA-8SG800)

The BSODs are caused when i play games like; Counter-Strike & Warcraft III. Also while i listen to music using WMP10. It can sometimes just be caused from sitting there.

Hello, I've been experiencing this problem off and on for the past couple of months, where the computer screen just turns fuzzy and crashes, then five seconds later is completely black (like the monitor is on but is not connected to the computer) I believe this generally happens while I'm surfing the internet (Mozilla) , often (perhaps always, I'm not sure) when I'm watching streaming video.

Ran a couple of different anti-virus programs (Adaware, Malwarebytes' Anti Malware) and Adaware turned up a bunch of cookies.

This has only happened a few times, most of the time everything's fine. Any clue on what could be going on here?

Answer:Computer screen turns fuzzy and crashes

Sounds like a vid driver problem to me...I'd try uninstalling current video drivers and then installing fresh ones (either from CD or manufacturer's website).

Well it started awhile back when my PSU died so I got a new better one, but the computer would still turn on but stay at a blank screen. I tested my parts and came to the conclusion that it was either my mobo or CPU or both, so I went to the store and got a new Asus mobo and a sempron chip and installed them. The computer still has the same problem and I don't know why and what to do. Sorry for my english and any help is much appreciated.

Please use descriptive thread titles from now on.Thanks.

Answer:Computer turns on, but I get a blank screen after replacing bad psu.

So how did you test your parts?

Start with a minimal system - nothing but mobo, PSU, video, CPU and a single RAM module. Preferrably not in the computer case but on a nonconductive surface like a wooden desk.

If it doesn't work, replace the video (if external) and RAM.

Look over your habits. Did you take anti-static precautions when putting the thing together? (Something as basic as touching the computer case or the PSU before touching any other components.) Did you happen to work on the thing while it was plugged on and you dropped a screw on the motherboard?

I have no idea what is happening. I thought it might have been my graphics card but I took that out and used my onboard one but it's still happening.. my computer stays on if i keep the app to window sized instead of full screen, so I have no idea.

Any ideas people?

Answer:computer turns off in fule screen apps??!

Hi Brendan,

I have one idea. The problem may be your power supply, it may be too small.

Hi all,

My faithful desktop of 2 years has started pushing up daisies:
I was playing GTA5 when the monitor lost connection to the computer and I had to restart. When I started back up, the message that appears after a bluescreen popped up. This started happening more and more frequently, whenever I started any game, then sometimes when I'd just have Firefox open, then about half the time I tried to start up the computer it'd happen at the login screen.

I did a Malwarebytes scan a few days before this started happening and it turned up clean, and I haven't changed the hardware in 2 years. I tried updating my video card drivers, to no avail.

The weird thing is how inconistent it is--I was able to play GTA for several hours last night, then it happened again. Sometimes it automatically restarts, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the power light flashes. Sometimes it makes me go through Startup Repair (which never finds anything).

I have no idea what could be causing this. BlueScreenView says it's a graphics driver about half the time, but not all the time. Memtest86 said the RAM was fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can post SysInfo results and the minidump files if they'd help; I'm on my laptop right now because the system in question is really unreliable.

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys I'm hoping for some help on this one, since i can't seem to figure out what exactly is wrong. I've had my Y510 for about 2 years or so and the only thing ever to go wrong was the right hinge. All of a sudden the other day, I would turn my computer on and only the media buttons/ processor lights would turn on. The screen was totally blank, not even backlit or anything. I tried connecting the compter to an external monitor but I still didn't get anything. Even pressing the NOVO recovery button didn't do anything. Any Ideas would greatly be appreciated. UPDATE: I was reading an article/faq that showed very similar to my problem, however lenovo says I need to update my BIOS. But how would I even going about doing so when I can't even get the lcd to turn on?

Answer:Y510, Computer turns on but blank screen.

I have the same problem here please tell me more if you got the problem solved pls

Hi, having a few problems with my PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few weeks ago I came into the office to find my PC was making a strange "static" type of noise out of the speakers. The computer failed to power up, so ordered a new motherboard.

Fitted the motherboad today and put in a larger PSU. It powers up but nothing is displayed on my screen. Have tried a PCI Express graphics card and an old PCI graphics card but neither seem to output anything to the screen.

The PCI Express graphics card was working fine in the computer before it broke.

Another possible problem would be the CPU rather than the graphics card. I have tried 3 different processors (the one that was in the previous motherboard and two others) but using a different processor doesn't do anything.

Would it be right to assume that this must be a graphics card problem?

Could it be something else entirely?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is starting to frustrate me,

I've checked to see that the hard drive is spinning and it is. the hdd access light flashes.i have not checked the ram yes since it's a laptop and difficult to get to. but i'm pretty sure that's not the issue. since from what i've listened to it sounds like it goes through post then sits the fro about thirty seconds probly asking if i want to start windows in safe mode normal. when i just sit there after about that much time has past the cpu fans start going again a little faster and i can here that it's accessing the hard drive but since i can' see anything it's hard to tell if that's true. i'm thinking that it's a bad graphics card but i'm not sure.

Answer:Solved: Black screen when computer turns on

ok so the problem is that sometimes you can see the picture and sometimes you can't see it. i don't know what causes that but that's what happens. i got it working again. but after it went to sleep the screen never came back on. would that mean that there is something wrong with one of the windows files? i know one of them is the one used to bring the computer back from sleep mode. it's running windows vista. maybe this isn't a hardware issue?

well last night my computer was working just fine, I shut down, went to bed, woke up today and turned on my computer where it restarted after about 2 seconds, the screen didnt even get a chance to turn on. I have unplugged all the connections in the back and replugged them in, i have open it up and cleaned all the dust and removed all the hardware and replaced it all again to make sure there wasnt a part that wasnt fitted correctly. I managed to get it get all the way to windows once but my keyboard wasnt working so when i tried rebooting to get my keyboard working the same problem came up now i cant get it back on I am pretty sure windows xp has nothing to do with this as it cant even get the screen on before it is restarting

Answer:Computer restarts on boot up before the screen even turns on

Hi ShikariAtryao. Welcome to TSF!

This could be a number of issues. Bad PSU, intermittent RAM module(s), bad device in your system, etc. If you have more than one RAM module, try removing all of them except for one and try booting again. Make sure that the one module you use is in the correct slot as well. Step through that process exchanging RAM modules until you've tried them all and see if you're able to boot.

You could also disconnect devices such as your CD/DVD player (both data and power cable) and try booting again. It's basically a process of illimination. Also check the power cable to the motherboard and such.

One other thing is to check the little cables that connect usually to the edges of the motherboard. One of them is for your HDD, one if for the POWER LED, etc. There are usually several of them. Make sure they are all seated correctly as well.

Good day!

I've been trying to solve this problem for over a months, going on different forums, trying to contact a one on one guy to help me, pressing all types of buttons on my keyboard but nothing seems to be working!

I have an all in one Dell desktop that refuses to display not even the start up logo. This problem happened right after I updated my computer. The update said it was going to automatically restart but it didn't and just turned off so I decided to turn it on and thats when it all begun.

I'm not 100% sure if it was the update or could be another problem. I should mention that when i turn on my computer an amber or orange light is present as if it's sleeping rather than the normal white light.

I've tried to reinstall windows on a flash drive but I'm lost and don't know where to go past the everything is installed in the flash drive now I plug it in.

I've haven't had any success in finding a solution anywhere near close so I would really appricate the help!

Hi friends

I have an MSI a6205 laptop, and have recently reformatted my computer to reset everything in it. My problem is this:
Ever since I re-installed Windows 7 my computer has been starting up, getting to the little 'Starting Windows' animation, then the screen turns off completely, with no back light (the fans and LEDs still function perfectly). The way I have been getting it to work is by turning it on, waiting for the screen to turn off, then tapping the power button and putting it to sleep, after a few seconds I hit the power button again to awake it, and the screen turns on and functions perfectly.

I know this isn't a hardware issue, because I also have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on the machine, and it works perfectly. It's just Windows 7 that is giving me this problem.

Answer:My computer screen turns off after the 'Starting Windows' animation :(

Is the power button configured to put laptop asleep (standby mode)? Or is it hibernation?
Default behavior is shutdown btw

This issue happened randomly when I was skyping with my friends and playing a game as well. The screen turned a weird black and white lines stretch across the monitor but my call was not affected and same for my game. I could still hear my game and them but couldn't see anything on my monitor.

I restarted my computer in normal mode and logged in as usual. But after a minute my screen turned this weird blue like color (it wasnt a BSoD) and again I couldn't see anything on my desktop being displayed from my monitor.

After restarting again I went into safe mode and waited 5 - 10 mins and everything seemed fine but I restarted to normal mode again then the same blue screen flashed up. I went back to safe mode and scanned for viruses but no threats were found.

I honestly don't know why this is happening so I don't know what is causing this problem.

Answer:Computer Screen turns blue on desktop startup

If it works OK in safe mode we can assume that the screen is OK. I would check the graphics driver.

So. I turn my desktop on today, and it sits there, the main monitor light just blinks, my secondary monitor, after showing the MSI screen, just shows this

After that, nothing. Computer is still on but nothing happens. I was thinking maybe something is wrong with my primary monitor, so I type in my password and hit enter. no sounds. I unplug my primary monitor and restart. No change.

My computer was also unplugged all night. The only changes made yesterday was the installation of System tools. Would that screw my computer over?

Any advice, tips, suggestions, or explanations are all welcome. I use this computer for working, and I have a mountain of important information on it.

I was playing around with Task Scheduler to turn on laptop at specific time, it works great. However, while the system starts up just fine, the screen remains black until I touch the mousepad.

Now that doesn't seem like a big deal, but what I was experimenting with is having the computer turn on so I could use TeamViewer app on my phone to access my desktop when I'm not home. Problem is, TeamViewer won't access desktop if screen is black and if I am not physically present, I can't tap the mousepad.

Anyone know why the screen doesn't turn on? It worked great on my old Dell with Vista, system and screen came on know problem.

It's most likely in the power options to turn screen on when computer wakes from sleep. Just a guess.

I recently upgraded to windows 10 on my Dell Inspiron 5720 and I have been getting a lot of lag. When I start up, everything works just fine. However, if I put the computer to sleep or if the screen even turns off when idle, my computer slows down to a crawl. Programs won't open. I have to wait several minutes for the start menu to open and it takes about 10 minutes to restart. Once I restart everything works fine. I am guessing it is a graphics issue, but I don't know how to fix it. Has anyone else had this problem and, if so, were they able to fix it? Thanks!

Hello! I recently dropped my desktop (I'm soo clumsy) on the floor. It's a dell vostro 400 with 4gb ram, intel 2 duo core, and nvidia 8600GT. I know it's not a power issue. The first time i turned it on after the accident, it beeped continously. Everytime i turned it on, all of the fans start up, my monitor recieves a signal from my graphic card but goes to power save mode, and it doesn't load the bios or the start up screen... what ever it's called. Any way of fixxing this or is it dead? I think it's the motherboard that's as far as i can tell.

EDIT: the graphics card works properly. It fell while it was on; I had to hold the power button to turn it off since it froze.

Answer:Dropped computer turns on, but black screen occurs

You moved and dropped the computer while it was on??? Not good. Open the case WITH THE COMPUTER UNPLUGGED and reseat the memory, and the graphics card. Check the CPU heatsink/ fan to make sure it is still tight and positioned properly. Also, check for any loose cables

More than likely a faulty graphics chip, the mobile Nvidia 8/9 series which you have are notorious for this especially in laptops with less than perfect cooling which allows them to get very hot.My advice would be firstly to clean the heatsink and fan thoroughly, secondly try a fresh install of Windows with the latest Nvidia drivers.  Trying to troubleshoot an installation that has had a lot of random tweaks and settings applied by a dubious program isn't going to go far.  If you still have the same problem with a fresh install, it's likely the graphics chip is toast.

Hi, my computer was working fine until I hit the windows key to take me to my tile screen. My mouse would move but that all, clicking it didn't work, itwouldn't even bring up the start etc, so I could shut it down, I been shutting it off by holding down on the power button, I go on computer now, it periodically freezes(quite abit), but the tile screen is a no-go, I find I use my tile screen a lot and would love to get back to the way my computer was. Not freezing at all, it's windows 8.1, internet explorer, can someone help

Answer:Tile screen freezing/computer freezing, what can I do?

Your computer needs some solid maintenance. Your best bet might be to take it in somewhere and have a tuneup done, Anti Virus, Anti Spyware, etc, and general PC maintenance done on it. HOWEVER if you want to attempt it on your own, it IS possible. You want to run McAfee Stinger on it, OR the free AntiVirius of your choice (AVG and Avira AnitVir are 2 other good choices), plus you also want to run 2 Anti Spyware/Malware programs on it. Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes Antimalware. I'd have you try HijackThis but you won't understand the results, and you can do more harm than good!
PS Also delete any program you have not used in more than 6 months (UNLESS you really REALLY know you need it).

Hi, So 2 nights ago my computer updated the new Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems.  It's working ok when in use, but after my computer goes on a screen saver mode and I return to it, a black screen comes on with nothing except for the cursor.  I can't do anything so I have to manually shut it down (today I've done this 3 times already) and once it comes back up, it takes longer to take me to the log in screen and then log in.I'm frustrated and mad that this new update is affecting the performance in my computer. Please help asapThanks in advanceMarjorie

I've been having an issue with my computer for a week or two now. Figure I'll explain the symptoms first.

First off, it takes a long time for anything to load. This includes when I first start the computer, opening a program, switching between windows, and shutting down the computer.

It also seems to be slow on updating the screen; for example, even now as I type sometimes the screen will freeze. I will continue typing until I realize this, then I have to rapidly click on the firefox button in the taskbar to make the entire monitor blink black a number of times before the firefox window opens again and shows what I had been typing.

The computer also likes to blink to a black screen like that on its own; the black screen only lasts a second or less, and sometimes it will happen once or a few times in succession.

Programs also like to lag; Word for example is impossible to work with; parts of the program will become invisible (showing my wallpaper underneath) or the program will just freeze if, for example, I open the drop-down menu for changing font size.

Even saving an image from the internet usually results in the monitor freezing; though I can usually still move my mouse, click on where the save button would be, and after the screen blinks again it shows that the image did save correctly. The pointer also freezes sometimes as well, though this isn't as often.

I've tried to do a system restore, but all my attempts result in the program saying the r... Read more

Answer:Computer Hangs, Lags, Freezes, and screen turns black

Hi TRM01 and welcome to TSF

I'm assuming you are using a desktop computer. Unplug all external devices except the keyboard, display, and mouse. Boot and check results.

Boot in the Safe Mode and see it the problem persists. Normally tap on F8 at early boot to get the Advanced boot menu. Might be F12. Check results.

Try the task manager long enough to turn some things off. Many things will not turn off, but many will. Watch the CPU usage at the bottom each time to see if you have found an application that is eating up your cpu time. It should normally be very low if you haven't started any applications.
Turn off explorer. Your icons will go away. Restart explorer using the new task under the file tab. Type in explorer to get it back. Any difference? Note that everything you disable will be reloaded next boot.

If you find a task that is causing the problem, you might be able to disable it in msconfig under the start tab using the check boxes. Start>Run> type in msconfig then enter. If you would like to find out what each item does, follow this link:

If you have some items that you never use, uninstall them, especially if they load something into memory during boot.

Make sure you are using only one Virus Protection program and one Malware program. If more that one is loaded, they sometimes fight each other and slow down your computer.

Open your task manager and see if you have any yel... Read more

Hello. I have an issue that started about a 3 and a half weeks ago, and I have so far not been able to fix it or figure out what is causing it..I've posted on another forum and have received no help so I found this place and hope you guys can help me!
My computers specs are:
case: rosewill ranger-m dual fans mini towerWindows 7 64-bitIntel i5-2400Nvidia geforce gtx 550 TiASRock H77 Pro4-M16GB DDR3 ram (g.skill ripjaws series)Corsair 700-watt power supplyWestern Digital HD (WD1002FAEX)also:razor naga epicrazor anansiwestern digital my book external HDsennheiser wireless headphones
I sort of have a dual monitor set-up; I have an Acer monitor as well as a Cintiq that is always on. The issue I am having is that my computer will randomly freeze up and each screen will turn a solid color, such as white, brown, gray, black, purple, pink, etc (if it matters, neither screen is the same color when this happens) - now, my computer doesn't actually freeze - everything is perfectly fine until the screens blank out. There is no sluggish mouse movement, lag, or anything like that. The reset button on the computer works instantly to restart it and it boots up fine with no errors. (UPDATE: Tonight, the reset button no longer responds. I have to hard shut-down the computer.)
When I first updated the graphics card drivers, I thought I had fixed the problem, I went over a week without it doing it again - now, tonight, it's done it 3 times. Each time it has happened... Read more

Did you uninstall the old Nvidia drivers before updating the drivers?

I'm trying to figure out my friends PC issue so I'm going to do some tests but I figured I'd post and see if anyone had any input on what it might be, I believe it could be faulty hardware but I'm gonna try to figure out what possibly..
- Computer is new, about 1 month old
-Windows 7
-If left idle and turned back on, it can stay on for about 15 - 30 minutes until the screen goes black and needs to be shut down again, goes into this screen
-Computer was running and had music playing, screen went black again and music was still playing in the background. So it's a display issue, but the monitor is fine working on another computer
-Says makes like an electrical noise before the screen goes black, mouse won't move

If any suggestions that'd be helpful, thanks

There was nothing different, thats whats always been there since I got the computer. After that, it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. I can hear the computer running and I know everythings on. Any ideas whats going on? It just did this out of the blue

So I ve encounterd this issue while im playing video games (mostly Tera), in the middle of the game the computer screen goes black (sometemies even other colors), but my computer is still running, although my Hard drive indicator isnt blinking.
I have a:
Intel core i5 3570k, Asus gtx 770, 8 gb of ram, 1TB HDD, 650W Psu,
I dont think its because of overheating, because when i look up the temperatures the max on my gpu is 75? on full load what is fine for the 770, and my cpu is on full load at about 54? max.
So could it be a software problem or my HDD is not working properly.
If anyone could reply i would be thankful.
Thank you!

Hi all,
Today I purchased a Windows 8 tablet computer. I got the HP Stream 7, a sub $100 Tablet which has gotten mainly favorable reviews thus far. It sports a full version of Windows 32 bit. I am experiencing a problem with this tablet. First allow me to explain the entire situation.
I bought one of the Stream 7's from the Microsoft store earlier today and brought it home. Upon opening it and booting it up I began to notice the strange pixel issue you will see in the pictures. It was even more prominent when I used a highly colorful dark wall paper. I changed to a lighter color wallpaper and it helped with the issue, but the issue still persisted and I decided to get an exchange. The exact same thing happened again with that one and I returned it without even leaving my car. I got a 3rd one. This 3rd one was working perfectly for about 10 min out of the box, I brought it home and within 5 min of using it at my house the same issue emerged. I will say the following about this issue.
1. It is on the exact same side of the tablet (i.e., left edge) every single time.
2. It goes away and comes back depending on what is being displayed on the screen.
3. When the tablet is in wide screen mode with the left side facing down the issue is much more prominent than when it is in wide screen mode with the right side facing down. The issue does not occur at all when the tablet is held diagonally. (This happened with all 3 tablets).  ... Read more
