There is no output device (Realtek HD Audio)

Question: There is no output device (Realtek HD Audio)

first I already wanna thank everybody who replies to this and try to help me. Yesterday morning I tried to download a sound driver that would make the Stereo Mix option available. It was not from the original website of Realtek or HP. It was from here: After I finished the installation and restarted my PC there was a red cross next to the sound icon and when I tried to open volumemixer it said 'No audio output device installed'. I tried to uninstall it with system restore. Than I also tried to install the latest sound drivers from the Realtek and HP site but both didn't work. Also I saw on another topic that maybe some services were stopped but that wasn't. Now I really don't know what to do. Hope someone can help me.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i have my ASUS X555LD for almost a year now, so as far as date is concerned my laptop shouldn't be too old to suffer such illness. So it came with Win8.1 x64 of course and just recently, as soon as Windows 10 was released, i upgraded quickly.

but right after i upgraded to Windows 10, my laptop became ill and had this errors:

1. i got BSoD Most of the Time, one would say CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED or UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION. there are times my laptop would freeze in the BSoD, not even the 0% would move to 100%. so i had no other choice but to force shutdown it, and sometimes after turning my laptop on again i end up at my BIOS with no HDD nor BOOT ENTRY listed. as i experimented, i had to press slightly hard on the right side of my Laptop where my HDD is Located just for my Laptop to re-read my HDD once again, as soon as i got back to Windows 10, i ran an HDD Check and nothing was wrong, no bad sectors or anything. this is confusing me as to how it is happening. so i somehow got used to BSoD since my Laptop frequently experience it. sometimes just a simple movement that would shake my laptop would turn into BSoD again, i suspect something like my HDD or loose or the likes. i dont really know.

2. after the BSoD Case, a week or three i guess. i started to loose Audio Ability. it was just this morning, the Volume Icon has a "RED X" on its icon and states "No Audio Output Device is installed.". and after checking my Device Manager, to my surprise the Built-in ... Read more

I would certainly physically check the hard drive connections. This problem will continue to aggravate over time. You might have accidentally disabled Audio in the bios. Make sure it is enabled in the bios.

Hello I am not great with computers especially deep things so please explain slowly.

I have a toshiba satelite A500 computer with realtek audio drivers installed
the sound is working fine three years later after I got the computer
my computer had a problem with the fan so my computer keeps overheating
changed the fan but after shutting down and turning it on the sound has a red X next to it troubleshooter is useless because it could not find the problem

(what is displayed in device manager.)

Realtek High Definition Audio with an exclamation point it keeps saying this device cannot be started. code 10.
how do you fix this thing without restoring?

things I tried
-Going to realtek website to download drivers it works but then it would be X again when I do a reboot then it does the code 10 thing
-Installing the drivers in safe mode does the code 10 thing too
-Restoring to an earlier time before the fan problem started
still no sound

so I guess the fan product is to blame...
If you know a thread with this problem but has been fixed please tell me

Answer:Realtek high definition audio driver no audio output device is installed

Could you let us know the exact Toshiba A500 you have as there are various models that have various hardware and software drivers?

eg. A500-17X

as its likely that you may need to re-install the Chipset driver and reboot then the audio driver and from Toshiba's website driver support area only, not a unified driver from realtek as at times OEMs like Toshiba will custom spec hardware and drivers from realtek and while it may state in your device manager or specs that a realtek hardware is for audio, it will not be a consumer one.

The fan you changed was which one? (CPU or case)
What Windows version and Service Pack are you using and are they fully upto date?

Hello all I have Win 7 32-bit on my gateway mx6437 and am having the same problem that several people are having here - no sound. I downloaded the latest Realtek AC '97 drivers from the Realtek website. I checked to see if this card was compatible with Win 7 32-bit from the compatability website. Right now the drivers are "installed" but Win 7 says its unsuccessfully installed.

I have an AMD Turion 64 card. Please help I've been researching this issue for the past 2 weeks without success.

Im having the dreadful "No Audio Output Device is Installed" problem on my realtek audio.

It worked some months ago, but im in no position to do a roll back. Im sure the hardware is just fine, it works with Ubuntu.

The computer is a Dell Vostro 430.
My OS is win7 64bit.

I tried the newest Realtek driver suite, the recommended dell-drivers and some basic windows-drivers. Nothing makes the "No Audio Output Device is Installed" go away.

Any help is welcome.
Ive attached my sound-related reg. I believe my realtek device is 0001.

Answer:Realtek Audio: No Audio Output Device is Installed

The Dell driver is required, non Dell drivers will either not work or not work correctly.

First thing, is the Integrated Audio enabled in the BIOS? (F2 at boot up to enter Setup).

Second, on Dell's (and many others) if the motherboard chipset drivers were not installed, the sound device will not work. In this model there are Intel motherboard chipset drivers. Try installing them and then the Dell sound driver. Dell Drivers

I recently noticed that my laptop no longer plays sound, either through the speakers or through headphones. The icon says that there's "no speakers or headphones plugged in". I've checked the Sound settings, and the Realtek audio output (I can't remember the exact name of the device) was missing. So I went to the Device Manager and the only thing under Sound is the ATI High Definition Audio Device. I'm not using HDMI so it's not what I'm looking for. Windows support told me to re-install the Realtek drivers from my computer's manufacturer, but I've recovered the drivers for the Realtek device through Acer's Recovery Manager and re-installed them. My sound still doesn't work. For good measure I uninstalled and re-installed the drivers directly from Realtek's website, but no improvement. I'm really running out of options here, since Windows basically told me they couldn't do much to help me. I'm hoping someone here could help me figure out what's wrong with my laptop.  My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5542 running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. Thank you.

Answer:Missing Realtek Audio Output in Device Manager

Thank you for your quick responses! I was going to follow your instructions when Windows started re-installing something. For some reason it decided just now to re-install the driver, so my audio is fixed and it's showing up in Device Manager again. I have no idea what happened (Windows Update hasn't done anything), but my problem's fixed now I was worried it was a hardware problem, but I guess it wasn't. I'll give kudos to you for your help, still ^^ Thank you!

I've spent countless hours trying to fix this. It started out with me wanting to enable the "stereo mix" option and so following a youtube video I proceeded to updating the driver using device manager > update driver and after restarting, I received this error.

I then downloaded the newest driver of the manufacturer website (realtek hd audio) and installed it. Mind you, the stereo mix option did in fact show up, although I couldn't make use of any audio since I was getting the "no audio output device is installed" error.

All this time, I can still see the mic/line-in inputs, and headphone/speaker outputs in the sounds (control panel). I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and using the roll-back option for drivers. Although from control panel, I managed to uninstall the sound card software for realtek. Between all of this, after any sort of install or uninstall I also restarted my computer.

I downloaded the drivers from the HP site (PC manufacturer for my comp) and the Realtek site (sound card creator) and all of them are giving me the same results.

Furthermore, I even tried the System Restore and it wouldn't work complaining about an anti-virus when all of mine are already disabled. I checked what the System Restore would affect too and nothing for my driver was in there as far as I know.

I'm really not sure what my options are now, and it's sucks not having any sound.

Please help me out! Thanks!

I don't know if any of this is related, but I wanted to provide as much information as I could for you gurus to deal with. So here's what happened:

I left my ASUS K55A laptop in sleep mode. I opened the lid to wake it up, logged in, and then everything started to load really slowly. This hasn't happened before, and the computer quickly BSOD'd in that new Windows 8.1 fashion. It restarted and scanned/repaired my D drive, again in a very slow manner. It took maybe 20 minutes just to get to the login screen (as opposed to maybe a minute). I login, and again, everything's very slow. This time, I just hit the power button and reset the laptop that way, hoping it'd fix things. Unfortunately, the same thing happens. After doing this about 2 or 3 more times, each time spending about 20 to 30 minutes, I just let it run after I log in. I manage to click the "Restart" option on the side after waiting eons for it to respond to my clicks. I get it to load and it booted up normally.

Or so I thought.

My D drive was suddenly inaccessible and my little volume speaker at the bottom right had the red X beside it, saying "No Audio Output Device is Installed". I spend another billion years trying to fix my D drive, changing permissions and allowing full control, and eventually getting full access again, most likely with some unknown ramifications. I found out after that although my C drive didn't suffer from the same problem as my D drive, the C drive would keep asking me f... Read more

Answer:Asus Laptop/RealTek "No Audio Output Device is Installed"

From your description, I'm going to suggest what I try to avoid at all costs. Do a complete reinstall. I know its a hassle but sometimes its what is needed.

Backup your user data to some external media (USB flash drive, CD/DVD media, etc) first as the reinstall will wipe it all out. Then do the reinstall, using the recovery mode that I assume ASUS has (most PC vendors have a recovery partition on the hard drive that will allow restoring to the original factory condition).

Hello Everyone.

I have a Jabra bluetooth speaker (the Solemate Mini). On Windows 8.1 I plug it in to my laptop using the 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable and then, when I watch a movie, it correctly outputs to the speaker and does not use my laptop speakers.

However, in Windows 10, no matter how many times I plug it in using the 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable I cannot get Windows to output sound to the speaker UNLESS I also connect a USB cable from the speakers USB port to my laptop, then it works.

If I disconnect the USB cable I lose sound through the speaker and it uses my laptop speakers instead.

How can I solve this please?

Many thanks.

I'm having a strange problem in my HTPC. Audio is coming perfectly fine out from the S/PDIF coaxial output, and it's normally connected only that way to the receiver, but now for other reasons I also need to connect it using a 3.5 mm to a small mixer. So in the sound manager I changed the output to the "Speakers", and in fact the Realtek sound manager detects that a cable is plugged into that output and shows me the dialog where it's selected. Problem is, nothing comes out.

I know it's not the 3.5mm to RCA cable because I plugged in my phone, played some music and I can hear it just fine. But the rear speaker (green) output puts out no sound at all, as I also tested it plugging headphones. On the Sound Windows panel where you can select the playback device I can see the volume level move up and down when I'm playing any media file, as well as in the Volume Mixer. If I switch back to the S/PDIF output and change the input in my receiver, audio is coming just fine.

I haven't tried the front outputs because they are not connected. The motherboard has HD Audio but the case has AC97 connectors, so I never cared to connect them because I don't use them. I know the rear green output worked at some point because I remember having a pair of computer speakers connected to it a few years ago.

Answer:Realtek ALC889 audio, audio fine on S/PDIF, nothing from rear output

I found out after a while. In the popup dialog when a cable is plugged in, I had selected "Rear speaker out" mistakenly thinking it was talking about the rear output, not the rear speakers in a 5.1 speaker setting. Changing to "Front speaker out" solved the problem.

Hi to all.

On my Dell OptiPlex 755 E6550 2.33, I've had intermittent issues with the headphone socket suddenly stopping working for quite some time, sometimes problem is auto detected and fixed, sometimes I download a driver or three to resolve. This time nothing is helping no matter what drivers I've tried. Have Win 7 Ultimate installed with just on-board sound. No sound or audio shows up in device manager? Are 755's fickle with on-board sound or just too many sound drivers installed? Any ideas please.

Answer:Dell OptiPlex 755 No Audio Output device and no Sound/Audio in Device Manager

There could be multiple hidden audio devices.
* Press windows key + R* Enter cmd, click OK* Type cd\ [press Enter]* Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [press Enter]* Type devmgmt.msc [press Enter]* Once the Device Manager opens, open Sound and see if you have multiple grey out items. If yes, delete them, then restart the computer and retest

Hi guys,
I'm having a little problem with my onboard audio, having just installed Windows 8.1 (clean install). I have an Asus P8Z77-V LE PLUS motherboard, which includes a "Realtek? ALC889 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC" onboard.
I have installed the latest realtek drivers; R2.73 from the official website.
Now, here's my problem: when I was using Windows 7 on this same machine, I could plug headphones in the front panel connector, as well as speakers in the green back panel connector. This would give me two audio outputs in the device manager/sound list, which was pretty practical and enabled me to output different applications through the speakers or the headphones.
Now, however, there's only one output, irrelevant of whether or not I have two outputs plugged in at the same time. They appear in the device manager as a single device called "speakers" (see picture). Instead of both having separate outputs, they both output exactly the same audio.

Any solution to this?

Answer:Realtek HD Audio only shows one audio output at a time

Hello audiobreak,

Try going into the Realtek HD Audio Manager (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Realtek HD Audio Manager), then look for a setting called 'Make front and rear output devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously'. I cannot remember where this is located (The Realtek HD Audio Manager has different skins depending on the motherboard vendor), but for an ASUS Motherboard, I believe you click the Cog Icon in the top left and the option should be in there. I don't know if this will create a separate Playback Device for the Front Panel in Window's Playback Devices, but it will at least allow you to hear audio from both your speakers and headphones at the same time.

Hope this helps.

Which 1 of these is better sound card and will it work on my hp p6310f. ASUS Xonar DG 5.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card -

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE Sound Card -

I have gt 240 gpu installed on black pci port. OS is win 7 64bit.

Well first; before you go and spend money on another sound card; try this: go into the device manager in control panel; and completely uninstall the device. Then reboot and let windows re-detect it and reinstall the drivers for it; then check to see if there are any updates for those drivers and install them. Try this out and see if it helps ya any.

this occurs reguardless the Media Player, i've tried switching Output faces (i have front and back faces. )

2: AC Noise: this PC runs on an CyberPower 825VA LCD SmartUPS (current load is & 57% )

3: Burnt out USB: for 2 months i've been running a Overclocked "BITMAIN" AntMiner U1 (OpenSourceCoin[OSC]) non stop. (i see side effects such as USB Devices like pendrives have decreased speeds, Wifi drops outs SD Readers cant function when the Miner is active.)

If clean uninstall (sorry don't know how to for Realtek) and fresh re-install does not work, try an older version instead of R2.79 - latest is not always the best especially with older hard and software. I know guru3d has them in their download section.

If you have some good ideas please tell me.

Try a previous driver because the latest one on my board doesn't pick up my optical but the previous one does.

Has anyone ever got Realtek HD onboard audio to work? Running it on XP/W7 and W10 on an MSI 970-G43 motherboard I can't get any output. All the checks show that everything is functioning even as far as the level meter happily showing the analogue output going up and down while playing music - but no sound coming out of any jacks !
There are a million (!) threads on people having problems with this software -but no definitive solutions.
I do have a SoundBlaster sound card which works perfectly and is disabled when trying the on-board sound. I'm contemplating another basic build for a friend, just for browsing and mail, and thought that using the on-board audio would save the cost of a sound card - if it can be made to work.

Answer:Y510 Getting no Audio from Realtek Digital Output

The digital output is for output to hardware devices that you have attached to the laptop that could interpret the digital output. For normal purposes, just use the default output. The default on my Y510 is called "Speakers", but that is a translation and the actual wording might be dfferent.

Does anyone know how to get Microphone output/playback to show in the mixer? Here are some screen shots of what I'm talking about. Please! I'm counting on you tech dudes! lol

Good evening, folks!

I've recently bought an ASUS notebook, model K45a. After a few days, I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8, but I didn't like it, so I formatted it and reinstalled Windows 7 64 bits.

I've installed all the preferred drivers from the asus website, but there is no digital output! I got the newest Realtek Audio driver, and no digital output option available.

I've been to Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Sound > Manage sound devices and right-clicked to select "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices" (sorry if it's not 100% accurate, I'm using a portuguese Windows version and trying to translate it accordingly) and nothing.

All I get is the speakers, no digital option, which means no 5.1 signal through both spdif or hdmi to my home theater. When I open Realtek HD Manager, it only displays the analog jacks.

Any thoughts on this?

Thank you!

I am having trouble with getting different applications to play through different outputs. I have my speakers plugged into the back and my headset in the front, but I can't figure out how to get my music and game sound to play out of the speakers while keeping the chat audio from skype or teamspeak in the headset. I'm using the Realtek ACL892 8-channel High Def Audio CODEC that comes built in to the ASUS Sabortooth 990FX R2.0.

The jack outputs are all bundled into one device. I want to have one device for each output jack, and not all on one. That means to automatically have detected various output devices...I add also a pic, so you can understand my problem. The picture text is in italian, but it shouldn't be a problem
Thanks for helping

Answer:Realtek Audio Jack Output Assignment Troubleshooting

1. I see you have the "High Definition Audio" as the device type. That suggests that you do not have the RealTek sound driver installed. Instead just the basic function Microsoft/Windows sound driver.

I have RealTek and I have a RealTek HD Audio Manager that will allow SOME (not all) jack assignment changes.

You can only have one default audio playback device and if I understand you correctly, you can't have different devices for different outputs. You can have "Stereo" (2 channel) or 2.1 speaker system that is connected to the Green speaker jack. OR you could have a 5.1 speaker system with the the THREE connections to the PC. But, you can't have one jack for one device or speaker system and another for a different speaker system.

For six months or so, I've had a problem where my laptop's audio will stop working. The red "X" appears over the volume icon in the system tray and audio will not function whatsoever. Until now, rebooting has been 99% successful at restoring the audio until it eventually fails again. But in the last three days, my normal quick fix no longer does the trick. Apparently my laptop can no longer find the actual Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD hardware on the motherboard. This is a T520 laptop running Win 7 with SP1. The T520 is roughly six years old, so I realize the hardware's age might be a factor. There are definitely other issues related to its age (general performance sluggishness, inability to wake up from sleep mode, backup no longer works correctly) and I will eventually have to replace the laptop. But in the meantime, solving this persistent audio issue will buy me at least a few more months, so it's worth fixing to me. I've found dozens of threads that suggest reinstalling the device drivers, which of course I have tried several times using the drivers here. The problem: After rebooting, the device manager still doesn't list any playback device ("No audio devices are installed") even with both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" checked. Similarly, when I run the 8aad14ww.exe device installer, it terminates with an error message ("Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver").  Has the hardware itself ac... Dear Forum,
Appreciate your feedback on the below problem I'm facing:
My desktop will not go into sleep mode after the set time. Forcing sleep mode (sleep button) works OK.
Using the "Windows 7 insomnia" information found in various fora, the "powercfg -requests" command and quite some time (...), the issue boiled down to the "An audio stream is currently in use" message from said command originating from the Realtek High Definition audio driver. Further digging revealed that if I would disable the optical SPDIF output in sound/playback devices, the error message from "powercfg -requests" would disappear and the PC would go into sleep mode as intended. Strangely enough, the 'speakers' and the 'Realtek digital output' (this is the non-optical digital output) can stay enabled for the sleep mode to work OK.

Question: how can I keep also the optical digital audio output enabled AND enjoy the power saving effect from Sleep mode?

Some background: Windows 7 Ultimate, Asus P8P67EVO mobo with Realtek audio, latest audio drivers, using both 'speaker' and 'optical' sound output to feed the PC speakers (using analog audio) as well as the audio system (using digital optical audio). The optical connection to the audio system effectively avoids any ground-loops and hence no hum/noise. If I would use "powercfg" to ignore the audio driver 'in use' information - which is often an effective workaround - the PC would also go into sleep mode ... Read more

I finally upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 and almost went back shortly after finding out I could no longer organize or manually arrange my own personal files and/or folders but luckily I discovered an application called 'Folder Options X' which has re-enabled that feature for me so I'm happy to be upgrading .

I'm having a few issue's with my audio playback options. I'm using an audio application called SRS Audio Sandbox Version which doe's work with Windows 7 because when I first installed it was working perfect for a good few weeks time but recently I downloaded Realtek HD Audio Manager 2.57 to enable me to playback audio through my monitor speakers but it seems to have changed my audio setup ?

I have a 5.1 Logitech z906 speakers which take up green, black & yellow ports and my monitor has a green audio jack which I plugged in green and my Logitech's green jack I've plugged into Blue and used Realtek HD Manager to change Blue port to a Line Out option.

It appears to work accept when I do Speaker Playback Test clicking on diagram only left & right speakers playback noise though when I do it with headphones on all speakers playback noise: Left, Right, Center, Sub Rear Left & Rear Right not sure if that's normal ?

Under Sound proprieties my Realtek HD Audio is set as the default playback device in which both my speaker & monitor playback music but I need it to playback through SRS Audio Sandbox so I can manage and adjust the sound but whe... Read more

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on my Dell Inspiron E1505.

I have had no problems with it for several years; however, recently my computer has booted with a red 'X' on my audio and tells me that "No Audio Output Device is Installed." I checked my Drivers and my High Definition Sound and 2 Base System Device drivers have Yellow Question Marks by them. I tried to update the drivers manually but it says Windows Cannot Find Support for your Base System Device and it says my High Definition Audio is already up to date. I have also tried uninstalling the drivers and rebooting Windows to let the system automatically search and update the drivers. This too has failed. I do not have my Windows 7 disc available at the moment to be able to do a clean install.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

I've been trying to set up a subwoofer, but the subwoofer is recognized as a center speaker instead. I read online that there's supposed to be an option to swap center/ subwoofer output or something similar, but the option is just not there. I know it's supposed to be there together with some other options under a picture of the 'setup'. The motherboard I have is Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P.
Since this option would solve my problem it's really annoying it's not there!

Any answers are appreciated, and thanks in advance!

Well, when I turned on my laptop this morning it states that there is "No Audio Output device installed"
I've tried the following:
Uninstalling driver/Reinstalling driver
Updating Driver
System Restore
Scan Disk
I even went on and tried to get the "fix audio issue" that they had but it had stated that I didn't need it...
I've tried it if you computer peeps have any clue what can be wrong please let me know..

No sound.
Little speaker with the red 'x' appeared yesterday
I have gone through the whole update drivers circus to no avail, my laptop can't detect that it has speakers built in so it doesn't bother finding a driver for them.

This is where I am at:
- Intel Display Audio is the only driver installed for sound
- This means that sound works when the laptop is plugged into an HDMI
- When HDMI is not plugged in, the computer cannot find the built in speakers.
- I have Linux on this system and audio does not work there as well

I would call this a broken chipset, but the fact that the computer still processes audio with the HDMI cable attached is confusing me. Also, the 'audio board' for this laptop has 2 usb ports attached to it, and those both work fine.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm having an issue I've had before, and found the resolution for... But can't find it again.

Symptoms: Flash programs, like the sound for the MMO I tried logging into, and the part of an online job application that has a "play" button to listen to a scenario then answer the questions from what you heard... won't play. Problem wasn't there lasntight, it's there today. Winamp, etc. will still play audio. System sounds won't play. Alert sounds used to play a chime but now play the alert tone from the pc.

All drivers are updated and correct. This is a setting somewhere that needs to be fixed, I just don't remember what setting. Some people with this problem report that it fixed itself after a while, but I don't have time to sit and count on that.

I know a new piece of hardware won't fix it... It's an issue in the computer settings somewhere.

Steps taken:
Originally when I went to device manager it showed everything as working.
Down in the system tray I had the volume icon, but when I tried to left click, nothing happened.
When I went to right click>open volume controls, it gave an error saying there were no mixing devices.
Checked that realtek is set to mixing, and checked all drivers.
Went into control panel>sounds and audio devices: no audio device, and no option to set one as default.
I went into services.msc and audio's set to automatic already.
I disabled th... Read more

I just realized that stereo output is inverted (L&R are swapped) on my Realtek front panel headphones connector and on my M-Audio Firewire card. Output is OK on Realtek rear main/front speakers connector.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Answer:Stereo Audio Output Inverted on Realtek Front Panel and Firewire Card

The front panel Headphone switch could just be a wiring error in the front panel, since it is correct at the rear panel. Or the cable that connects the front panel to the motherboard has a wiring error (assuming the connector is properly connected). Many cases have two audio connectors for the front panel, HD Audio and AC97 audio. The HD Audio is the preferred, if you are not using that, connect it and see if that helps. If you have HD Audio connected, and you have AC97, use that.

The MAudio device is a separate issue. I have a Sonar X2 recording studio and have an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R interface unit (and a Roland Octa-Capture). I used to have a firewire unit, a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and any channel swapping was done in the DAW program (e.g. Sonar).

Right my Sony Vaio VGN-FJ1S/W currently has no sound. Under "Sound and Audio Device Properties" in Control Panel it says i have no audio device however under Device Manager it states there are no issues with the "Realtek High Definition Audio". However when the laptop boots up I get the Sony Vaio startup sound which plays at the Vaio animation screen before the Windows Splash Screen. Then once I log in to a user account I have no sound at all other than the default windows' beep.

So from this I can tell that the sound card which is onboard is fully functioning otherwise I wouldn't hear the sound on startup, eventhough when i run DXDIAG it says there is no sound card found.

So far I have tried:
Uninstalling/Reinstalling Audio Drivers through Device Manager
Rolling back the drivers in Device Manager
Editing the registry from SP3 to SP2 and installing "KB888111xpsp2.exe" then reverting back to SP3
Uninstalling the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from Add/Remove Programs then reinstalling older and newer versions

I have included a hardware log from PC Wizard containing my laptop specs aswell as screenshots. I'm sure there is a simple step I am missing which is why I am posting here to get others' ideas' as I have tried everything I can think of. I think I have included as much information as I can but if anything else is needed then I'll be happy to get it.

Answer:No Audio Device Problem (Realtek HD Audio)

Sony's website provides Realtek drivers, so you have a Realtek chip, yet the logs say you have an Intel chip. Interesting.

Try this: open Device manager, right-click on "Realtek HD audio" and choose "delete". Then restart and cancel any XP prompts and install the drivers from the Sony site.

It's a version mismatch in the driver.
A hotfix specific to Sp3, for the HD Audio driver, will be made available after XP SP3 releases.

After looking at you specs I really need to know what CPU you are running, whether you are using an internal sound card (on mother board), or PCI card, and if so the manufacture, and the age of the card. The sound card may not be supported either. Also even if you are running a 32 bit version of Win 7 512 of ram is just a might to low. You system would run a lot smoother with 2 gigs.

I'm using a HP Compaq nc6400 and I've recently installed Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.

Since installing it, I had a problem with my sound, which was as the title states, no audio output device. I've been through several drivers, none of which worked, and I've also tried sound max, which has in fact worked, however I can't stand the little sound bar when you up or down the volume, and it's fairly unresponsive when I use the buttons on my laptop. So in all fairness, I just want the actual driver designed to work with this laptop.

I do have a version of Windows 7 Home Premium, not too sure if it'd make much difference, however I'd rather not go through another OS install as I've got most of my stuff already set up on this now!

I am good with computers so don't be afraid to get technical, but I just need another angle on this because it's most likely just something I'm overlooking.

Thanks for any help,

I don't know what Dell's return policy is in the U.K. In the U.S., the return period is typically 21 days from the date on the invoice, and might not be extended by reporting a problem to tech support. Within the return period, a unit can be returned for exchange or refund if it has a hardware defect; if no hardware defect then there is a hefty restocking fee. After the return period, returns are not accepted. Any or all of that could be quite different in the UK.
McAreavyRegardless of that the UK has pretty consumer laws...
I'm envious. We consumers here are pretty much on our own.
McAreavyThe machine bleeped so it is capable of producing sound.
What I wrote in my previous post was based on the assumption the laptop had produced no sound during the test, so I'm afraid I'm now going to sound more like tech support. It's difficult to give recommendations because I don't know what model you own, the specific symptoms you have, the circumstances of the audio failure, or what you have tried so far to resolve it.
What is the model of the laptop? The most recent Inspiron 15 3000 series models are: 3555, 3559, 3565, 3567, 3568. There are some others that are more than a year old.
Take a look in the Windows Sound properties and report what it looks like. You should see something like this:

I have installed an Asus Xonar DX 7.1 (Working in perfectly in Vista) and I have also installed the drivers from the cd which installed without errors. I have also downloaded asus win 7 beta drivers yet I still get no sound.

In device manager I can see my asus card with the yellow ! signs. If I try to update the drivers it says I have the latest up to date drivers

At the bottom right near the clock it still reports no audio output device is installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:No audio output device...

Right click on your card in Device Manager and select Properties, what does it list (if anything) for an error code?

The old thread did not help as I try to get sounds to a virtual disk, where there is Windows Server 2008 installed as Vista. And the same red cross above the loudspeaker. Have tried some Vista Realtek 97 drivers but to no avail.

I was reading an older post and the OP seems to have found the solution.

Original Post: No Audio Output Device Installed

I have an HP Pavillion2845 Laptop.

When I hit F10, I enter the BIOS setup. However, I can't locate the tab to Enable/Disable the sound card. I tried pressing other Function keys at the startup (DEL too) but to no avail. I feel like I'm missing an obvious step.

Answer:No Audio Output Device

Give this site a try:

HP Business Support Center

It is not tech support provided by HP. It is voluntary support provided by HP business users. But there are some savvy people on there. As an example, I had HP PCs with Intel chips that kept locking up due to overheating. The fans never bumped up to higher speed when the CPU got hot. Turns out there was an "Easter Egg" or undocumented hotkey that opened a page in the BIOS setup they don't tell you about in the manual. On that page I could set the fan speeds and trigger temperatures.

I found out about that setup page in the HP business forum.

The other day I noticed that I had a red x on my audio symbol in my icon tray. I have no sound and when I run my mouse on the audio symbol it says "No Audio Output Device Is Installed." I have run diagnostics and all it says is that there may have been some hardware changes that were not detected. I have gone under device manager and I have no section that says "Sounds, Games, and Controllers". I have done windows updates and that doesn't help my audio.

I have a Dell Inspiron zino HD 400 and run windows 7.

Answer:No Audio Output Device

Is there anything in Device manager that has any warnings yellow ! or red x, if so please list them. Can I also have the service tag# for this machine, it is usually on a sticker somewhere on the casing.

Download the free, Speccy then run Speccy and click File > Save as Text File, then attach the log as per instructions below (note: as Speccy also now lists more data it likely will have your Windows licence serial key also in the log, so look for Operating System and under that Serial Number and delete the code and Save the log)

Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions

I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Intel Core Duo 2 and my OS is Windows 7 64 Bit. I have tried downloading drivers, windows updates, virus scans, browsed different forums for a solution, but none of them worked.. My sound just isn't working and I don't know what to do next. My SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec is working fine, but my Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI is not. This is the message I get "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Answer:No Audio Output Device

If thats a old computer model then there probably aren't any windows 7 drivers for it.

You could possibly search for customer drivers, or homemade drivers. However i have never used them so i wouldn't recommend it, but it could be a option.

I have 3 lectures I have to listen to and complete by sunday so i really need this fixed, feel like i have done everything i can to try and fix it but any help would be much appreciated thanks.

Answer:Audio output device

Hi, you are best served by getting your drivers from the manufacturers site rather then relying on a third party util.

Did your sound work previously, and did it stop hence the need to get new drivers?

Lets see if windows recognizes your sound device. Go to search and type:- command prompt, search will return command prompt, right click on this and select "run as administrator" an elevated cmd prompt will open copy and paste the below cmd into the prompt window:-

wmic sounddev get Caption, DeviceID, PNPDeviceID, Manufacturer, status /Format:List > 0 & notepad 0

Press enter, please post the notepad outcome here.

I have recently bought a brand new Inspiron 15 (3000 series, Windows 10). I can't get any sound out of it.
I've run Dell diagnostics, installed the latest Realtek audio driver as recommended, and rebooted. Still no sound. I've contacted Tech Support, who are suggesting it might be necessary to return the machine to depot. Is there any other solution out there? (there appears to be around 15,000 posts on audio issues, and I really don't have the patience to go through all of them!)

Answer:No audio output device

McAreavyIs there any other solution out there?
McAreavyI've run Dell diagnostics
If you did not hear sounds during the PSA audio test, which is a hardware test, then there is not a software solution. Anything you do to fix the failed hardware, such as replacing the motherboard or the speakers, would void the warranty, at least partially.
A "workaround" would be to get a usb audio device, such as a jack, speakers, or headphones. But although such a device would produce audio even with failed hardware in the laptop, obviously it would not be a fix.

That's okay. I've done it for you. (Took a few years.)

If the laptop is still in the very brief "return period", you can return it for being defective and get your choice of a refund or replacement. If the return period has expired, then you are stuck with having it serviced under the terms of your warranty.

I have "an old fashion motherboard,, with realtek's VT1818S High Definition Audio 8-Channel soundcard build in to the Asus m4a77 motherboard. Usually with W7 windows i had to install the driver from asus's website... so far when i get to the installation point it says:

none of this package's drivers are compatible with your pc

allthough, this time W8 did install the driver but its delivered by microsoft, High Definition Audio device. well... the card works, if i keep the speakers attachde to the front jack. and the stereo mix capturing doesn't work.

Any help?

Answer:Realtek HD Audio device driver

Try running in compat mode. Steps 1,2,3 of option one should get you there. You may need to ininstall what you have going then run this on the exe that you downloaded from asus.. good luck to you

Here is the problem.

When I plug my headset into the front of my computer ( there are two jacks for a headset and mic ) I make sure they are in the correct jacks. Realtek pops up a box and I select "Headphones". I then went into Vent so I can chat with some people. Now I can hear them talking but when I went to talk the mic was not picking up my voice. I know it was not Vent because I also tried to record myself using the Windows Recorder. Also what I have noticed is that when I had the recorder running and I was in vent, I held down the talk button while someone else in vent was speaking, and then I played back the recorder because I wanted to see if I could hear myself. For some odd reason it recorded the person who was talking on vent.

I have a brand new Alienware PC. All my drivers are updated, I checked and double checked. Nothing is muted, I checked and double checked. The headset works, I checked on another PC and I could use the mic and hear with no problems. I also have Windows Vista 32bit.

Answer:Realtek HD Audio Device Manager

Not sure about this because I don't use a headset, but right click your Volume icon and select Sounds. Then click the Recording tab and check to see if you can select Vent for your Microphone.

hi guys i need to change my audio devise from realtek to something else (windows/other) im using windows 7 and when every i go to play a game the pc freezes ive found out that its something to do with realtek because if i disable all sound the game works fine just no sound can you tell my how to do this and what is best to use

Answer:change audio device from realtek

If you have a RealTek hardware sound chip, you must use the RealTek drivers, whether they say provided by RealTek or provided by, for example Microsoft.

You may want to post this question on the gaming section, include the game or games you are having problems with.

Recently I had some computer issues and had to take apart my PC and refit it back. Everything is fine now but I just realised that my Nvidia GPU is being used as the HD audio device. Audio plugs are all in the motherboard jacks and not in the gpu, my gpu dosent have any audio jacks anyway.

I didnt even realise the issue until recently when I tried to record some gameplay footage and found my recording to have screwy audio. Everything else seems to be fine as far as sound is concerned. I need to know how I can go back removing my GPU as the audio device and re-enabling Realtek. Right now I have no realtek device manager in my control panel or my programs list.

I wasnt sure if it was as simple as re-installing the drivers and rebooting the PC and I've had some major issues with drivers in the past so Im wary of trying to fix the problem on my own.

My motherboard is: Biostar TP67xe
GPU is: Nvidia gtx 570
running on win 7 home 64bit

Thank you.

Hey there,
Can someone help me? I've been trying to work this out 4 weeks.

I can hear audio playing through winamp/media player and basically any program thats on my computer (XP). But I cant hear anything that plays through flash online eg. myspace audio and youtube etc etc.
But I can listen to online radio through Real audio etc.
This is a real prob for me cos I work in the music industry and have to keep up with the latest music from bands.
Everything was working fine until about 10 days ago when it stopped without explanation (that I can fathom).
It's very strange cos when I go into control panel, it says there is no audio device. But how can this be? I can still hear music from my harddrive.

What I've done: Uninstalled/ reinstalled Flash, also the Realtek drivers...

Where is starts to get wierd:
I thought i fixed my problem the other night. All of a sudden it recognised Realtek as the audio device and I could listen to everything online- so happy! But i had no explanation of why it started working again.

Then the next day:
No device recognised! Ahhh!
After several restarts I found that some times control panel says there was an audio device (realtek 97) and more often it says there is nothing.
I have a suspicion it could be cos there's other hardware Unimodem half duplex installed on the computer.. but am not sure what to do about this. I tried disabling it, but then nothing at all would play- not even through winamp etc.

Pleas... Read more

Answer:Realtek AC'97- No audio device recognised

On-board audio, Realtek codec drivers and such can be very dodgey and problematic. Even when all things are working perfectly, these still utilize a big portion of CPU resources just for basic operation. In all, integrated audio is a good cheap alternative for Grandma's "You got mail!" when she signs into AOL, but for most everyone else, it's not the best solution.

While not the answer you want to hear, you're likely going to save yourself hours of grief, diagnostics and driver download/installs by simply buying a cheap, well supported, true sound card.

If you're in the US, my best cheapest solution is to just go to Walmart and buy one of their Audigy SE's. These are around $30 bucks US, they usually have a ton of them. You just disable your current on-board audio in the BIOS, power off, slap the card into an open PCI slot in the case, close the case, power-up, install the drivers off the included CD and you're in business.

Above all, you get up to 64 voices in hardware, spares your CPU so the rest of your system runs fast, EAX support for surround 5.1/7.1 speakers, CMS3D for expansion of 2 speakers/headphones, tons of nice EQ features and handy EQ presets, sound environment settings, clean 96khz, 24-bit hardware audio quality, etc.etc. Not to mention you can hit Creative's website and they have an auto-updater (for IE5.0 and above) that works like Windows Update.. takes all the pain out of keeping your drivers and so... i cant download the drivers for my laptop from this site

Answer:Realtek HD Audio Device Manager

While we do have some drivers in this section here for most common hardware, we could not cater for all of the various hardware makes and drivers, so you will have to give us a bit of a clue as to what hardware driver you are missing (I have moved for post from an old driver thread as your issuse may or may not be the same as one from early 2008).

To help us we will need you to post the following info.

If your PC is one from the likes of DELL, HP, Sony, etc what is the Make and model varient as this will assist us if we need drivers?

If your PC is a home or custom build what is the motherboard make and version?

What Windows version you are using?
Was this a downgrade from a newer version of Windows?

To find this info you can use the likes of Everest to find this info, at times a summary log of your PC can help, to do this

Install Everest and run
Click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next
Choose All Pages > Next
Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop is best as easy place to find it, use Browse to locate desktop)

Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post Click to expand...
