How to recover files from erased CF card?

Question: How to recover files from erased CF card?

Oops, I erased a 1GB Lexar 40X CF card with live images, no backup. Erase was done by format in the camera, a Canon 10D. Any ideas how to recover the files, if possible? Thanks for any replies.

Preferred Solution: How to recover files from erased CF card?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How to recover files from erased CF card?

You can use any file recovery software if the card can be attached as a disk drive. If your camera can't act as USB storage, then you have to use a card reader.

Zero Assumption Recovery ZAR is a nice tool that lets you recover images for free and I have recovered all images from a Canon-formatted CF with it. (The fscking camera didn't have a confirmation frompt for the format command!)

First off I am not at the programs own forum cos I cant recall either my pword or username so cant login or re-register. Secondly, you guys here will give me an unbiased opinion. I use a freeware version of a well-known file erase program. I have used it for years and thought I was safe. However, needing to recover accidentally deleted (not erased) files I used the recovery program from the same company. As well as the deleted files it turned up a whole load (all? I dont know, there were hundreds) of files that I had intentionally erased. including 7-pass and 35-pass erasures. At first my reaction was - "this program does not work as advertised", then "hmm, it it because of the way I am doing it?" When I have files to erase I move them to a temp folder and when convenient run the program. Does this mean that I am somehow creating a copy which stays in some archive or memory and it is these that are being recovered? Another odd thing: Using the file recovery tool I have "recovered" files that were never even deleted - but they were opened in grafix programs and altered, but NEVER deleted. Do these programs create their own library of used files and then "delete" them when the program or the pc is shut down? If I overwrite empty drive space with any old rubbish will that "sanitize" the drive? Thank you.

Answer:Solved: I can recover "erased" files and files I have never deleted

Title pretty much says it all...
How to recover?
Synology DS215j mounted with 2 x 4TB WD Red
So I tried doing a fabric reinstall from inside the DSM. Apparently it was a DELETE ALL option and now i´ve gotten 2 empty disks. Anyway to get the data back that i´ve just deleted? Its a DS215j, mounted with 2 x 4TB WD Red. Just hooked one of them to a windows rig, and saw it had a 100% free space, so nothing on them.. Was running, as far as I remember, DSM 5.2 while this happen.
As i´ve never tried things like this before, a how to, step by step giude, would be very much apriciated. :D

Answer:Erased my entire NAS, how to recover?

NAS systems are Linux based and don't use Windows file format. Try attaching one to Linux based machine and then running a File(Linux) recovery software.Check your NAS manual or call technical support for advice.
Since you have 2 drives it makes the situation more complex. If you have a good, recent backup, you can restore the files from that. And if you don't have a good backup, the NAS manual and tech support don't help. If data is really important you can use data recovery services like Stellar to recover data.
ALl the best!!
and your data is worth spending a lot of money, you can use a data recovery service like Ontrack or DriveSavers. Just make sure they know what type of NAS system contained these drives and whether they were part of a RAID.

Hi, all.

It looks like I accidentally erased a CD-RW that had some personal information backed-up onto it. hehe

1. Is it possible to recover data from an erased CD-RW?

2. If so, is there some software that is recommended for the job?

It would take me quite a while to find some of the information elsewhere; so, I'm just trying to save some time here.

Your input is much appreciated!

Answer:Recover data from erased CD-RW

I found this on a Google search. May give it a go.

Answer:Recover erased data

Hi There!

There are a couple programs that can recover data but you're gonna pay for it because they aren't cheap.

You might try searching out a "Data Recovery" company and for a fee, then can most likely get everything back.
Good Luck!

Hello!Currently I'm working on a library computer. This is my problem! I have downloaded a word file (that is my own) from my draft folder in e-mail. That file had to be edited. When I was saving it, I cannot remember whether I chose ''view'' or ''save'' option, because I might have thought I will only read it trough and not start working immidiately. Yet, I obviously have (hours went by), and I've finished the editing. It is possibly the file is only, as I mentioned, tempor. file in mozilla's 'downloads'.At one moment, I saved the changes, and saved the file, although I don't know where, closed it, and went for the book. After I came back to the desk, I couldn't find the file anywhere. When I downloaded the file again, same 'downloads' window appeared, and there is the old file that I worked in, in the bottom of the list, but now it won't open again. Is there any possible way to find somewhere my lost file? To recover it?I know this may sound unserious, but there are hours of work in it.I also hope I won't be annoying with this kind of problem and question, but this is important to me, as a lot of work is done in that doc.I know there must be some folder somewhere, where this type of files is stored, but I cannot find it.This is w xp library comp, just for info.I would appreciate some advice...Thanks

Answer:Cannot find a file, maybe is erased...ANY way to recover it?

I'd use the Windows XP Search function:Click on Start Click on SearchClick on For Files and FoldersSelect "All files and Folders" on the left options column.Enter the file name of your document followed by wildcard file extension type so your_document_name.* where you replace your_document_name here with the actual name of the document name. The drive to search should be C: , however it can be D: or any other drive letter if not a normal default windows installation on the library computer.Click on Search and wait for results to be found.Any files of yours found that match should be saved to a thumb drive to retrieve them.If nothing is found and nothing is in the recycle bin, its likely long gone, however you can inquire with the library as to if they have this system connected to a server that has shadowcopy enabled to recover your lost file as a last resort, but I am not aware of any libraries that save user data like this due to privacy policy. Corporations use shadowcopy to protect users from accidental deletion of files if enabled and implemented correctly. Most libraries that I have been in had well configured systems in which their user profile for the general public using the computers was set to delete data discarding changes and documents that were added/saved by a user on logoff or shutdown, so that nothing can be planted on the systems to clutter or allow a hacker to invade users privacy by planting a profile exploit if there was one.*If this compute... I have O&O UnErase, but my problem is that when I connect my camera to my computer running Win XP, it shows up as "Digital Camara IXUS 80", and not as an external drive, therefore O&O Unerase canīt recover anything from it.
Is it possible to make XP recognize the camera as an external drive (eg. F: )? Or can I use another program in this case?

Answer:Recover erased photos from digital camara

You need a media card reader which a lot of new PC's come with. You can also buy a multi-card reader that plugs in to your USB port. That may not allow you to "undelete: however. A memory card is not the same as a hard drive especially if you have used the memory card for anything else since.

I have an 128 MB SD card (Lexar) that the Kodak camera and my Pocket PC say "needs to be formatted" and HP software (with a HP PSC 1350 printer, with card slots) says "error found on card." None will read it, none will allow software to open anything or even scan the card for errors. There were quite a few pictures on the card when it failed.

The card has been a bit flaky from the beginning, occasionally claiming to lose its format, but until recently, re-seating it in the camera would fix it. It is under warranty, so replacement is not the issue, only recovery of the files. But not worth a lot of spending to do so.

Any known combination of hardware and software that might allow a low-level look at the SD card? I even thought a "quick" format might restore it enough to copy the sectors off and reassemble the jpeg files.

HP claims there is no way to disable their driver software (that is stopping at the "error found.." message).

I am trying to recover my files-all.

Recently all the folders and files disappeared, normally when this happened i would view all the hidden files in the folder options and also unchecked the hide protected operating....

and i would see the hidden files.. now only thing i see is a folder marked playlist (guessing since it was in ma phone that's apart of the reason),

however if i delete it it comes back my guess is its a virus, i know my folders are still on it cause the space is allocated in the properties box so its there... i also tried the command line (attrib -s -.......and so on) but nothing worked, i only see the same playlist folder..

i don't want to buy one of those recovery software cause its costy and i might not use it frequently..

Hey guys, I have a very annoying problem with my camera. Last November, I took a cruise on the Carnival Triumph, and while I was on, took a lot of photos & videos. I probably lost my SD card on which I took all of it on. Now, I think I left it at my cousin's house or I lost it. They won't let me into their house to check for the card .

Hi all, I was using an SD card in the built-in SD card slot on my laptop to store data files. Something happened that corrupted the SD card. Windows 7 still recognizes the SD card and I can see the files on the card, but I can't even copy the files off of it to save them, so that I can reformat the SD card to use it again. What would be the best approach to take for recovering these files? Are there any good user friendly programs out there, preferably free or open source, that I could use to try to recover these files? They are not vital files but they are important to me and I would like to recover them. Didn't know what was the best forum to use to post this in, so I chose General Discussion. Thanks, Steve

Im trying to recover a memory card for a freind with his images and homework.

Here what happened. He was working on something from the memory card when his windows xp crashed. The computer wasnt able to rocover so it was formatted and reinstalled, the memory card got wiped when that happens. Its a 8GB card and when i stick it into my card reader, it shows that the drive exists, (O Drive) and it shows the size and name if it. But when trying to open it, it says please insert a disk into removable disk, thus making the memory card un-readable and not accesible.

Pc Inspector Smart Recovery program doesnt recognize this drive, as if theres a drive but its empty.

Is there a way to fix it? Any sugestions and help would be greatly appriciated.

It's as if all the programs were deleted.
The names of some of the programs are still there,
but on mouse-over out slides an [empty] notification.

(but, almost all of the programs are safe & sound in the Programs file)

AND! Administrative Tools is gone!, excuse me: [empty]

Accessories is gone & can not be reinstalled.
everything that used to be there is [empty] as well.

with all that happened when I reformatted the hard-drive 2 weeks ago,
(down to 9GB memory while there should be 40GB!*)
*see previous post

I don't want to do that again! I'm afraid, I'll have NO memory at all!

thank you so much for your time and bother

Answer:Help, Please - some OS files erased & no OS cd

Here's an update:
Items 'pinned to start menu' work
Programs sent to Desktop (making a shortcut) work

Sent all programs I could to the desktop.
Ran the Clean-up Desktop Wizard which
put all the Shortcuts from the programs into a file on the desktop.

Opened up this file of Unused Desktop Shortcuts
Copied entire contents to the Program file Under each logon's Start Up Menu.

Now I have all these 'short cuts' on the start-up menus.

I'm beginning to 'drag & drop' each shortcut to it's program's place on the menu

(you know, the place where the program should be, but instead is [empty] )

....what a long way around when you don't know anything about registry -eh?

As for the deleted Accessories, and Administrators Tools,
I'm into my other XP computer finding just what the files are that are 'gone'
for example:
Event Viewer is: eventvwr.msc /s located:
c:\WINDOWS\System32\eventvwr.msc /s

so, I click on the Start Menu > Right Click All Programs > open
in this file folder Click file> new > shortcut
browse to eventvwr.msc /s

and viola! ON the Start Menu:
A shortcut to Event Viewer.
rename the shortcut to Event Viewer
drag and drop it to Administrators Tools Folder

almost as good as new-right?

sigh - time intensive.

i have 2 X 250GB hard drives. each is devided into 5 X 50GB partitions. each partition is dedicated to some specific type of files. for example i have a partition for photos, one for movies, one for games, and so on!

a few days ago i transferred some photos from my digital camera onto my computer. the partition for photos is on the same disk as the windows partition. once i transferred all the files i did a final check to make sure that everything had come over, and then i deleted the files from my camera! the next day when i turned my computer on to burn the new photos onto a CD i found out that they were gone! since then i have tried everything. whatever i put on that partition of my hard drive gets deleted automatically when i turn the computer off or restart it! it only happens to this specific partition. all other parts are fine. and it doesn't happen to photos only! any other type of file gets deleted too! all the files that had been there are fine and i can access them. it's only the new files that get removed. i have done virus scanning checks and nothing has been found! i have tried all kinds of recovery software that i could find. nothing has worked yet! i have no idea why this happens and how i can stop it from happenning! if any of you guys do, please help me. also are the files that have been erased still on my computer? they weren't in the recycle bin or any other folders! if they are still there, then how can i find them?

thanks a lot

All my data on my external hard drive, appears to be erased or in some incoherent text of random symbols. Can anybody explain this and how I can fix the data and retrieve it ?Thanks

Answer:Erased or formatted files

Erasing can be by overwriting with zeros or random data. Do you have an erasing application that could have done this. Another alternative is have you encrypted the data, this would also appear as random data.If it has been overwritten then you have lost the data.Formatting a hard drive in any O/S other than Vista does nothing to the actual data.

I've been away on vacation and I've come back to find that all the files in MY Documents are gone. I was told that the Norton detected a virus and deleted it although there is nothing in quarantine. Is there any way of finding out if these files were deleted by any other means? - there's nothing in the Recycle bin and there's been no system restore. I don't know what type of virus it was. Who was using your machine while you were gone? I'd ask that person what happened. To my knowledge, Norton does not simply delete files but rather quarantines them.

Here is a site that offers applications to recover accidentally deleted files; perhaps one will help. Click here.

Hello there.

I used Malwarebytes to get rid of the Vista Anti-virus 2011 that was blocking me from doing things. It seems like a lot of important files were deleted and I don't know how to get them back. So I saw this video: Where Do Deleted Files Go? - YouTube

And wondered if you run the 'clean all' command in diskpart would that properly erase the data on the drive, or does it just make the space appear available in the same way deleting a file does when deleting in Windows? This isn't to help me or anything I was just curious if there is anyway whatsoever to properly erase data without destroying the physical drive.

Thanks for reading.

Answer:Can files be properly erased from a drive?

Clean All completely overwrites the sectors on a hard drive with 0's, making the data very difficult to recover (I'm not sure about impossible), whereas, deleting the file simply hides the file from the file system. The Clean switch just overwrites one sector where the file resides with one 0, simply hiding the file again.

Cleaned out the recycle bin with Eraser and in the log it says that a huge number of RansomOff files could not be deleted because of permissions. Anyone know why this happens? Are they somehow associated with system restore or something? Here is a pic of a tiny portion of the gigantic log entry:

Thx for any knowledge on this...

Answer:RansomOff files Can't be Erased by Eraser

RansomOff uses FltRegisterFilter, a kernel-mode callback implemented by Microsoft which has been available since Windows Vista. This allows security software to intercept file-system operations on-the-go from kernel-mode without being required to use "hacky" and undocumented/potentially extremely unstable methods such as kernel-mode patching to replicate the same functionality. All your favourite security solutions which have file-system scanning support likely use this mechanism as well, it is a really good mechanism.

IRP_MJ_CREATE will be triggered when a handle to a file is being acquired (also applicable for intercepting the creation of new directories/files).
IRP_MJ_SET_INFORMATION will be triggered when the state for the target object is set to let the system know the file is pending removal.
IRP_MJ_CLEANUP will be triggered to carry out the pending deletion operation.

You can try using a utility which operates from kernel-mode and may bypass kernel-mode callbacks, such as PC Hunter. However, the log shows the Recycling Bin and I wouldn't have imagined that to be a protected area... It may be unrelated to RansomOff. You can test this by uninstalling RansomOff, rebooting, re-trying the removal, and then re-installing it again.

Hi Folks

I was away for about 4 days, during this time my 10 year old son entered into the pc and created his name as the administrator( I never had a more than one user on this XP machine), then when I came back today I found the following

Myself I was there but under ZENJ2 and not as ZENJ as before, his name was the under the administrator but I deleted it without any problems.

On remaining with one name as before , all my files were lost and there was nothing in mail boxes in the outlook express, all folders were empty with no personal files.

In other words I have lost everything, when I tried to launch System Restore, it did restore to 5 days ago and the folders were back as before , but they were empty and still all mails are gone and so is the address book , the favs, and all files everywhere which were personal of mine.

tried to check several places in the hard disk but I can not locate the files

What can I do ?

Please help

First place to stop is the recyle bin on all accounts. Make sure the deleted files are COMPLETELY removed and not just sitting in the recycling bin from which you can easily restore from.

next step possibly

Hi, first off thank you very much for your time.

A few weeks ago I started noticing a slowdown on my computer. At first I thought it was nothing to worry about, but as time went on it got worse and worse. By slowdown, I mean processing speed, NOT internet connection speed.

A cursory glance of my process list didn't show anything that I knew to be malicious. But there are several processes that seem unfamiliar.

All of this wasn't a big deal until a few days ago when I noticed what looked like an Ad-aware announcement in the bottom right corner of my computer. I went to dismiss it, but when I did, my computer complete shut down. When I restarted, all of my personal documents and and pictures were nowhere to be found. In addition, every time windows loads, I get an error saying that one of my files may be corrupted.

A trend-micro scan revealed no threats.

Anyway, here is a copy of my log:

Hello, good day! I'm very dissatisfied with the product, since it apparently has erased all the data from my previous year of work. There are multiple factors, but pretty much it happened after the system installed the latest update last Friday the 13th. Next time I turned on the computer, there was a different color background where my photo and login address are. I logged in and to my surprise everything looked like the first time I turned on the computer back in June last year with several software uninstalled and my files apparently gone. After searching through the C:// Drive, I found them on the user account, and decided to move to their original place in order to access to them easier.

Everything was working fine, I can even say I started to like the reboot, but then, all of a sudden, the computer crashed, and after I turn it on again, the background color was back to the same color as before the Friday crash. I logged in, the desktop looked like I left it before Friday, and the files I had moved were gone, permanently, I presume.

I REALLY WISH SOMEONE MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP ME! I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO RESCUE THOSE FILES, but in case it's not possible, I would just like to report to you this terrible, terrible glitch, which might in the future affect other users. At the same time, I need help understanding what the hell happened, in order to prevent it from happening again.
Thank You!

Answer:Windows 8 appears to have erased all my files

It sounds like you may have been signed on as a temporary profile - this happens if your profile is corrupted but you normally get a message when you sign on saying it has happened. If you move things to the desktop while signed on using a temporary profile you lose them after you sign off.

Is that where you moved things (the desktop) when you say "I found them on the user account, and decided to move to their original place in order to access to them easier."?

Have you tried searching for any of your lost documents?

You could also check if you have a folder C:\Users\Temp on your system. Recover Data from temp profile - Spiceworks

When I run searches in Vista Business, thumbs of previously deleted files keep showing up. How can I delete these references to files which no longer exist?

Answer:How to delete path of erased files?

Can you locate the actual path(s) under (My) Computer?

If so, you should be able to right click on it and then delete.

Some folders are very difficult to delete but the following link is great solver. After you install it, the application "Unlocker" will be added to your right click shell commands and then you can select "delete" from the drop down menu. Very simple to use........

You may have to reboot the PC to get rid of it all together.

Like anything you delete, might be a good idea to create a System Restore Point first and make really sure that it is safe to scrap!

I made the changes you advice for my PC and is working better, thanks. I also have a government laptop that is running slow. It is a Sony and runs on windows 2000. I installed Spyboot and Ad-aware SE plus a Pop up blocker also I have Symantec Firewall and the government symentec antivirus. After spending soo much time trying to find out whats wrong with this computers I am thinking about buying an Apple computer since I was told there are no pop ups and the chance for getting viruses is less. Any opinions about the apple computers?

I deleted some files earlier since I read that it was ok to delete lines higher than 08 on hijackthis log but I accidentally deleted some important files and ended up having to uninstall some programs like my symantec firewall program.

This morning, I turned on my computer as normal, and started up as normal. I connected my Digital Camera via USB Port only to see my computer freeze. I rebooted only to see that somehow, Windows XP reverted back to the default state( green hilly landscape desktop image with default desktop icons). All my desktop documents are gone, missing. They are nowhere to be found. It is like someone just deleted everything I had on the desktop. It seems like my profile has been erased and a fresh profile has been created. There is only one profile though, which is the one I am in which is the Admin Profile. Networking works, and my C and D drives are OK. I did a search for any document in the last 4 days, and windows found nothing. I ran hijack and here is my log. I tried to do a symtem restore to 11-15-05 but, after it restarts, it says that Windows cannot restore back to that date. I have never seen this before. I ran Panda Software Scan, and it came out OK. I ran Computer Associates Virus Scan, that came out OK. I also went into Safe Mode only to see that the files were still missing. Please Help. I know I should not be saving to the Desktop, unfortunately I did and have some important files missing. Here is my Hijack log

Answer:Desktop Files Missing, Erased

Not to sound too wierd but did you check the contents of the digital cameras media? Also look at the created date of your profiles directory this will tell you if its a new profile or your still working with the original. Also I am sure this was checked but i have to ask has recyle bin been checked? Lastly do you remember any of the specific file names? You can do a search on 1 specific file and search all of your local HDD's (make sure to include subfolders and system files). As well you mention things are networked? Are you using file shares? If so do the search on the other computer as well (search for a known filename).

Usually if you will find 1 lost file from a directory you will find all the rest of the lost files.

I recently backed up and resorted my Sony Vaio laptop. Thing is, the backup didn't work properly and i'm missing a big chunk of data. Are there any tools out there I can use to root around the hdd, see if any of the info is still alive in there?

The restore cd only took 15 mins to reinstall windows and a bunch of other software so I'm thinking it didn't have time to format the disc, well i'm hoping anyway.....

Any ideas boys and girls?

Answer:HELP!!! Desperately seeking erased files

A good argument for verifying a backup before assuming it is good.

Resore might have done a quick format, which just empties the directory and file allocation tables.

You can use a sector browser to examine the HD and see what might be recovered. Something like Norton Utilities might be able to reassemble certain file types, assuming they are small or are in contiguous sectors.

Runtime GetBack

I've used this multiple times on on 5-7 HDs, and was able to recover 99% of the data.

I've also tried other apps like File Scavenger, File Recover, Easy Recovery Pro, and none of them seem to do as good of a job as GetBack IMO.

i can still see the burnt area on the disc, and nothing was burnt over it. It just see the data on the disc, has noting else written on it. I think someone deleted the directory or names of the files

Answer:accidentally erased files on DVD burned in W7

It isn't possible to delete a specific file or folder on a DVD-RW. You can only erase the entire disc to use it again (unless it was formatted for packet-writing - drag to disc writing).if it's a DVD-R, you can't delete or erase anything on it - full stop.So if something disappears it's because the disc is corrupted, in which case the data may be beyond recovery. You can try recovery software, no harm in trying, but I don't think it works for optical media:

Hi all, a while ago I had the idea to start from scratch to clean up the system and gain more performance. But I have not done yet because I have some doubts.

On the PC I have Acronis True Image Home 2011
--> In the part where it says My backups I see the image that I have saved.
--> When I click on "Explore and recover" :To the right I see 2 items to recover: "Reserved for System and Local Disk (C)"
Therefore, the partition (D)will remain intact. Right ? But if I want to restore everything, both partitions, i have to use the option "Files and folders" ?

Extra info : I did not create the image, other person is who created it :P

Answer:Difference between recover partitions or recover files and folders.

How long ago was that Acronis image made?

I guess I don't understand your intent. You talk about starting over to clean up and gain more performance, but then express interest in restoring "everything".

Was that image made at a time when your system was running perfectly? How has your system changed since that date? If you restore, you will have to reinstall any applications you've acquired since the image was made. And that image won't contain any personal data acquired since it was made. Maybe it contains no personal data at all?
If you are going to "start from scratch", I assume you mean you want to do a clean install of Windows.

If you were to do that, the only thing in that image file that might possibly be important to you would be personal files---pictures, videos, mp3s, Word documents, browser bookmarks, possibly email, etc. And that would be personal files as of the date of that image, not your current personal files. And not Windows itself.

If I wanted to "start over", I would:

1: back up all current personal files to some other drive, probably external. I would NOT use an image for this. I'd just copy them with the mouse.

2: reinstall Windows.

If I did those 2 things, the contents of the Acronis image would be irrelevant.

You should forget about Acronis if you don't understand it or know whats in any images you have. Particularly if you didn't make the image yourself. Images can fail you anyway. I'd never rely on them exclusi... Read more

My question is can I restore any of the erased files on the C drive? It's an emergency. My daughter had 3 school essays in .doc files. Thanks

Have a 2 year 3 month old Dell desktop running Windows XP Media Center Edition. Last Saturday 3/14 afternoon, I upgraded Spyware Doctor to v6.0.440 (paid version) which went without issue during its install and reboot and and an hour later Winamp to latest free version 5.55. When I started to install Winamp, the PC crashed. I downloaded the Winamp software by clicking on the website link within the software ( It was first weird when the Winamp install started, I saw most of the icons on my desktop disappear and the hard drive was processing with ALOT of activity, apparently it was deleting my Windows files (machine has 2GHz of memory). After a couple of minutes of seeing no activity on the screen, I hard shut down the machine by hitting the power button.

Upon reboot at the start, it said a system32 file was missing. I could not get into safe mode as got the same file error message there. I could get to the System Menu to restore the PC to its original factory configuration which I did and reinstall data and software from backups and all is well now.

After Googling, I am left without answers what caused this. Any ideas? I had ran a full Spyware Doctor scan the morning of 3/14 with its 975K+ definitions and found no infections. I also have Zone Alarm Security 7.0.483 which earlier last week I scanned for viruses and spyware/malware and found no infections either. This is scary that a simple software upgrade caused so much damage. I am very cautious security-wi... Read more

Answer:PC Crash Unexplained? - Windows files erased

You shut the system down while the disk was accessing which cause disk corruption. The full system32 error would have told you that one of the registry hives was corrupt. A simple check disk probably would have fixed the corruption. Who knows what caused the PC to hang in the first place. Maybe the windows installer hung while installing Winamp or hung registering a dll.

OK Here goes!!! I was adding another user and when I tried to go back to my administrator user, I couldn't. I tried to run the computer in Safe Mode and apparently that is where I messed up. I tried a system restore to go back to an earlier date but that didn't help. The computer wouldn't even let me restore to Monday. (Today is Wednesday!) My step daughter was able to get online after I had several failed attempts. I am not sure what I did wrong, but I have lost all my pictures I had saved from the last 3 years!! That is major to me!! I love to take pictures and I love sharing them with family and friends. Now pictures I took this past weekend are gone!!! I have also lost my kids work projects and resumes for everyone in our family, and other word docs I have used for years!!! I need to somehow retrieve these files.

Now for what you really need to know. I have an HP Pavilion Intel (R), Pentium (R) D CPU 2.80 GHz. Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Obviously I have had this computer for a really loooooong time. I have only had trouble with it once and a friend of mine helped me with it. He has since moved and is unable to help me now.

Answer:Restore and Safe Start erased my files

I have done searches for *.jpg, *.gif, *.bmp and *.png files. The search for the *.jpg files brought some pictures form 4 years ago but I still am not able to bring up the picture files from March 07 forward or any of the word doc files.

SO..I need some help

I have an HP Pavilion g6 laptop, and its been working great in the year I've had it. Yesterday, I went to do some DJing practice, and noticed that all my music was gone. All that was left was the sample music. Same thing with all of my pictures and video, gone. I restarted the computer and came back a day later to find everything was still gone. As a DJ, I've built up an extensive library of music, thousands of songs, so that really made me mad. Also I had about a thousand irreplaceable pictures and videos that I backed up from my old phone. Again, as these cannot be replaced, this made me really mad. I have NO idea what happened to the files. When I go into the libraries and look at music, or pictures, it just says that the folders are unavailable. I haven't been doing anything different with the laptop aside from syncing it with my Xbox for media. I'm totally clueless, but I need help, as music is my job, and I don't feel like downloading all that music again.

ANY help would be much appreciated

Answer:Important music and image files were erased

Make sure these files are just not hidden,
Which by the way is usually the first sign of Malware.
You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
Uncheck the box to Activate the Free trial from the final install options,
This one is the longest up to 4 hours, the others are only about 45 minutes,

Hello,my apologies if this was already discussed but I searched the forum and couldn't find anything.

As the title states,on my laptop, vista erased files in my user profile while the 2 other user profiles (my gf's and the guest profiles) were basically left untouched.
I use an HP dv6500 series with Vista Ultimate, 2gb ram,160gb hd and 2.0 ghz if that helps.

For starters, let me tell you what happened. As of late I have been using the Power saver option( so that the screen brightness is dulled so that I can use it in the dark when everyone's asleep) as well as the High performance option when my gf uses it (shes addicted to the sims3 and has pulled me in too ). Normally I have it on the HP recommended option.

A few nights ago I was using my laptop and instead of shutting down I hibernated as I usually do because my gf is usually still logged in. The next morning my gf started up the laptop, and the password screen for my profile came up and she switched users and logged into hers. Then later she hibernated as well, and we left to run some errands with a friend.

When we got back my friend wanted to use the laptop to play online chess(yahoo games to be exact) so I just put in my password to log into my profile so he could play without any issues if he needed to (since my profile is the administrator he wouldnt need me to put in passwords if he had to download or upgrade any software). When I came to check up on him I saw that my wallpaper, the folders on the desktop as we... Read more

Hello! My name is Apoorva. I am using Windows Vista which is installed on C:\ & Windows XP which is installed on D:\

I had taken a Complete PC Backup in the month of February in Vista using Complete PC Backup feature.

From the past few days, I was facing some issues with Vista and so I decided to use Windows Complete PC Restore to restore my computer back to what it was in the month of February.

Now when I started with the Restoration process, it said that it will erase all the files on C:\ & D:\.

I selected the checbox and continued with it, and my god!, when it restarted the computer after the restore process was complete, I found that all the files and folder on D:\ on which Windows XP was installed has been erased and restored with an earlier version.

Is there any way by which I can recover those files? All files including files in My Documents, Program Files & Windows have been erased and restored with what there was in February.

Awaiting eagerly for a reply...

Sorry to tell you this but I guess you have to use the recovery system. Or other two ways is use Windows disk your current one and hit repair button once again it might work. Or learn the date you delete the file and go system restore.I hope this work but than again I'm not 100% sure that the system restore will work use as the first, two try the vista disk, your last one do the recovery system but before you do that back up the data from c and other files on your computer as this will reset windows to factory conditions. Have a happy new year (I hope this fixes your problems)

Hi a few months ago I reinstalled my OS to Windows 7 Home then upgraded to Windows 7 Pro in which during that process a Windows.old folder was creaed that had all my files. Then a couple months later I decided to talk the big step and upgrade to Windows 10. Knowing that another Windows.old folder would also be created I renamed my Windows.old folder to Window.old (1). After I did the upgrade to Windows 10 I saw my Windows.old and Windws.old (1) folders but there was nothing in either folder. Where did they go? Are they hidden? I checked that and the setting for the folders were set to show hidden files. Was I supposed to login with my previous local account? The upgrade had me sign in with my MS account. I created a local login but that did not work.
I did notice that the default locations for my Documents", Music, and Video Quick access links onthe left panel were directed to a local folder which was C:\Users\TEMP.Dennis-HP.011\Documents In fact in the users folder I had 12 folders TEMP.DENNIS-HP to TEMP.DENNIS-HP .011 with the first 9 folders ranging in size from 0kp to 5Mb and the folder .10 was 30Gb and .011 was 2Gb. My Windows. old files had more than 100Gb in them so I'm wondering if these files have access to this data. After enabling to show hidden content I see an AppData folder in each file and it look like maybe these files and folders are connected with the Windows 10 installation. Can anyone please help? Hello. Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my post first off. I recently had some random pop up that mentioned something about hard drive failure. Next thing I know the folders and everything were disappearing off of the desktop. Then the windows xp recovery pop up came, and started doing its scan thing. Task manager was "disabled by administrator." I was able to run malwarebytes and get some functioning back, but not the files as of yet. I then did a restore to see if I could recover anything but nothing yet. Ran malwarebytes again and found even more stuff the second time. And now I have a browser redirect issue every time I do a search and click a link. Please please help if you can. Thank you. Greatly appreciated.

I'm going to try to give as much detail as possible but I didn't write down any of the errors unfortunately.
I had a freeze on my computer as I was switching my sound card (a pretty old sound blaster live gamer) from entertainment mode to game mode. I had to reboot as nothing else was working. When the computer came back up it was in VGA mode. I looked at system manager, showed an exclamation mark next to the video card and the sound card (although it was displaying their names). I tried uninstalling and re-installing, and nothing will do the trick. After I installed the video card drivers it gives me some kind of error, like its not identifying the card correctly, it thinks the driver is from a different version of radeon hd. I had this a while back and fixed it by reinstalling windows (which at the time I needed to to anyway, so I didn't pay much attention to it). I really would hate to have it reinstalled again as I would have to install a lot of software that I currently have on it.
Any thoughts? I didn't create a restore point, I tried restoring, it won't help. Any thoughts? I'll give you more info later if you request it, this is all I can think of from the top of my head (and I don't have the computer next to me at this time since I'm at work). I also had a weird error, now that I think of it, that was saying something like "could not read from 0x89489 (I just put some random digits there, it looked something like this, can't remember the exact combina... First of all, I want to point out that I have very little knowledge of technology.

I have a NTFS Seagate 2TB Go Flex Desk external hard disk drive. A couple months ago, I found that it had a problem where my laptop could detect it, but couldn't access it and needed to "reformat" it. I left it alone for a while.

Recently, I tried plugging it in again, and behold, it seemed to work okay and I could see all the files and so on. I tried chkdisk without the fixing part (/f). I didn't want to "fix" it until as last resort because it seems to imply some data will be lost. It said there were a lot of bad sectors.

I couldn't read some of the files (most of them were rar files) in my hard disk, and had "read error" and "data error (cyclic redundancy check)". So I basically moved all the files which were normal out of the disk as I couldn't move the others ("can't read from source file or disk") and now I'm left with the broken files, most of which are important. 40gb of 16,000 files.

Is there any hope for me to recover those files? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: after this, how would I deal with the bad sectors?

Answer:Disk read error for files in the harddrive, want to recover files.

OK! The bad sectors are always one of the killers of data on a hard drive. That’s why we are always asked to back up our needed data at least on two separate drives. So, in the future, you should learn to keep at least two copies of your important data on separate drives or locations.
But, right now, since your drive still could be read on your computer, you could try to run some data recovery programs to take chances. Nowadays, many data recovery programs are developed to help people resolve these troubles.

But, if you are not sure, you could firstly try some drive data recovery freeware such as Recuva, TestDisk and iCare Data Recovery Free, etc.
But, if any data recovery software could not make a difference, you could consult a data recovery expert for help and prepare enough money for it.

Good luck!

Hello All,
Here's my problem. I've erased my profile from Mozilla Firefox. I HAVE NOT however erased the profile files.

I have since created a profile with a different name. I would like to import the old profile info (bookmarks inparticular) to my new "default" profile.

As well, what if I wanted to import info from another Mozilla Firefox profile?

Can this be done?

I've tried everything but I can't seem to figure it out.

If you do post please be advised that I am not all that familiar with Firefox.

Thank you all for your time.

Answer:Solved: Mozilla Firefox...Erased Profile but not files...trying to import to new profile

I move mine manually all the time. If you just want to add the bookmarks.html, just move the one you saved to the new profile. Here is the official instructions from Firefox on backup and restore of the Profile.

I have been using Ghost that came along with Norton Systemworks 2003 for almost 5 years now. Duh. Any ways, I wanted to try creating a Ghost image and saving it directly to DVD's. I went and set up everthing in DOS, needed to have FireWire support for the DVD Recorder. No big deal. Ghost booted up fine and all that. Did the typical things to get started: source = my auxiliary drive, copy to = my DVD Recorder. Chose Fast Compression, which was later realized as being my first mistake. The file creation took about 5 DVD's and everything appeared to be going okay. The whole process took almost 2 hours. I then went on to do the Integrity Check. Shortly after I started the Integrity Check, was in too much of a hurry to get done and I was so confident that the Image file was okay that I shut down the machine, and proceeded in zero-ing both of my HDD's. Had I run the Integrity check just a few more minutes I would have found that the Ghost Image file had been corrupted and I would have never erased my HDD's. The errors that I was getting in DOS when Ghost exited itself was Decompression Errors when I later went back and tried to do an Integrity Check. That is when I realized I should not have used Fast compression, rather I should have used No Compression. Makes sense. Most of the data on my Aux drive were Ghost Image files and they were already compressed enough as it is.

So, here is my dilemma, and a serious dilemma at that. All my vital data for... Read more

Answer:How can I recover files from corrupted Ghost files??

If you have not used your hard drives for anything since you zeroed them out, you may wish to contact the drive manufacturer or a professional data recovery service, such as Ontrack, to inquire about the possibility of recovering your business data from the hard drives themselves. I'm not optimistic such a recovery would be feasible, but it's worth asking about. In theory it's possible to recover data that's been overwritten, but as a practical matter it may not be economically feasible if it's possible at all . Still, you may as well contact the drive manufacturer or a data recovery service and ask how likely it is your data could be recovered from those hard drives and how much it would cost. This is assuming that the hard drives in question have not been used since they were zeroed out. If they are in use, it may still be possible to recover some of the old overwritten data, but such recovery becomes less and less likely the more the hard drives are used.

If you don't wish to pay for professional data recovery help there is software available (both freeware and regular retail stuff) that may allow recovery of some data from your hard drives. But typically such software is able to recover data deleted from the recycle bin or from a drive that's been repartitioned. Whether a similar recovery would succeed with drives that have been zeroed out (so-called low level formatting) I don't know.

There are both free and commercial har... Read more

Hi, I used Puran to recover some deleted files from my external hard drive and when I open some of the files I get the following message:
"This document could not be registered . It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document."
The documents still fully open and they look like they are all there. Also, when I look at the properties of some of the folders they say there is 0 bytes in them. I did the recovery twice, once selectively with only the files that I thought I needed such as .doc and .pdf, and again with everything including files such as .cab . chm .dwg .hlp .mdf. Two identical recovered folders from each recovery say they have a different amount of data in them.
My question is: are there supporting files that need to be recovered along with the .doc and .pdf files to fix the issues and to make sure i have recovered everything, such as the .cab .chm etc?  I didnt the extra files were necessary but on further research they might be files needed by word. Are they only needed for the program and not individual files?
Thanks for the help!

Answer:When I recover deleted files, are there supporting files also?

Check if the service "DCOM Server Process Launcher" is set to Automatic and running. Start->Run->type Services.msc, scroll down until you find the service. Also check to make sure the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" service is set to Automatic and running.

Recently, everything had gone. Absolutly everything...
I did some research, in the meantime and I found about that "windows.old" issue that is been around for the new users of Windows 10.
Is there anything I can do to recover the files that, for me were not to be deleted?
Thanks in advance.

little bit silly naming it the same as windows would use as a temp upgrade. Personally would have called it something else. doubt the files are recoverable unless you run recovery software on the drive and see if it returns.

Question: recover .chk files

Dear All, inexplicably my Western Digital external hard drive has converted all of my mp3 and jpg and raw files to file(number).chk files. I understand that this is something to do with the scandisk process, but can anyone help in directing me to a piece of software that can be used to return them back to their old state ?

Answer:recover .chk files

First try simply renaming (only) one of them to the correct extension - then try and open it.If you can't then I suspect you won't recover any of them. If you can, then you can rename them all back. There is a good bulk renaming program I use called click hereHowever my suspicion is that all is lost - sorry. .chk files are usually just file fragments, due to corruption.

My Dell Latitude began giving me write-failure messages. Whenever I attempted to run a scan, e.g. chkdsk or a virus scan, it blue screened with a Hard Error message. Finally, I bought an external drive to do a backup. Unfortnately, I got the bluescreen on the backup attempt and upon all attempts to boot thereafter. I called dell, we ran a diagnostic which indicated a bad drive, and they sent me a new drive. As I have tons of important info on the old drive, I am attempting to recover as much as possible.

I have installed the new drive in my Latitde and it works fine. I have also placed the old drive in a USB drive enclosure.

I'm wondering what the best way to proceed is. Should I attempt to boot from an XP CD and re-install XP on the broken drive?

If I connect the old drive and attempt to read files from it, how do I prevent infections of my new drive?

Should I use data-recovery software? Which ones are recommended?

I'd be happy to answer any requests for further information. Many thanks.

Answer:Best way to recover files

Install the original drive as a slave to the new drive and see if you can then access the files.

Do you still have the CD/DVD for the 2014 version? If so, you could re-install it but I'd do a Custom install so as to choose a different Folder or you'd risk over-writing what is already installed. Frequently minor or major changes to newer versions of a program will prevent using older files with it.

My file system is unknown, but i used to have FAT32. It looks like my hdd has recovered, but now it says: The disk in drive D is not formatted. Do you want to format it know? I know that my stuff is still in that hdd. But how can i get it out? And what should i do?
I use windows 2000.

Answer:Recover files from hdd.

is that D: a separate disk or a partition?
I've used HDDRegen a few times myself, and it is a non-destructive program with a great rate of success (unless the harddisk was destroyed already).

I bought a new HDD and everything is working fine now, but I'd like to recover some files on the old HDD. What programs are available to get these back (or are there any)?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:How to recover files on bad HDD

If you formatted the old hard drive "a couple" of times you are pretty much out of luck in recovering anything on it. There are companies that have ways to recover data from a bad hard drive but it is very expensive. If you had installed the old hard drive as a slave and after getting the new one set up you could have possibly gotten the data.

Hello gurus,

I have an external hard drive, attached via USB, that I have stupidly removed the Super block (Deleted the partition). Basically, I tried to install Ubuntu and I deleted the partition. Very stupid and rookie mistake, and I wasn't on drugs.

Now I'm trying to recover the data, the drive has not been formatted. I have extracted the image to another hard drive an I retrieved some of the files out of it, but I still can't get all the data. Also, some of the files that I managed to restore have the I-node name instead of the file name and some are corrupted or missing.

Here is some more info:

From the "fdisk -l" output, notice it is not showing the partition's name:

# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sdc: 40.0 GB, 40020663808 bytes
64 heads, 32 sectors/track, 38166 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 = 1048576 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x01bfa9fd

# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc /mnt
NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sdc': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sdc' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?
