Computer getting svchost error, microsoft update website does not load, MAJOR PROBLEM

Question: Computer getting svchost error, microsoft update website does not load, MAJOR PROBLEM

Alright guys, I've got some major problems with a computer here. The computer seems to be infected with some sort of virus, with symptoms similar to conficker. I am not sure that this is what is causing our problems, but it's come down with a nasty worm that has the following symptoms:

1) All microsoft update websites are disabled. I try to log onto them and the website will not load. All other websites load just fine.
2) Major websites posting fixes to viruses and computer problems also redirect to a website with advertisements.
3) I get a svchost error that, upon clicking "ok", freezes the computer or makes it run very slowly.
4) Svchost.exe begins to consume a MASSIVE amount of memory, slowing down the entire computer.
5) I am experiencing random redirects to websites.
6) The computer, as a whole, is running sluggishly.

We attempted the following fixes:
1) Installing and updating avast, and running scans. Various trojans have been removed.
2) Installing and updating malware bytes. Various trojans and viruses have been removed.
3) Running windows repair. This did not fix any of the above problems. We are trying to avoid a complete format here.
4) Reinstalling virus scanners and malware bytes, running them again, and fiding more viruses.
5) Reinstalling internet explorer 8.

None of the above work. We do have access to a windows install CD, just for your knowledge, just in case. But as mentioned before, we'd like to remove the problems without having to resort to a complete system wipe.

Attached are the two DDS files and the GMER log file. I really appreciate your help.

Preferred Solution: Computer getting svchost error, microsoft update website does not load, MAJOR PROBLEM

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Solved: Browsers will not load microsoft website but will load FB, Google etc etc

Either it's a problem server side for them, which would be an issue with your IP,
or a process/service altered some of your core system settings on your end which blocks the microsoft website for some reason....., you can try a different IP address just to make sure it's not server side for them, and then if that doesn't work I am not sure what to tell you other than reinstalling all browsers, and eventually refromatting if reinstalling browsers does not work.

IF it is an IP issue it could be something with your network, if a network admin blocked the microsoft website, or even theoretically your ISP if there was a strange issue with them, however that would be rare.

Answer:Virus/spyware not letting me open microsoft /microsoft update website

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop.
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Extract the contents of the zipped file to your desktop.
Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please agree to do so.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once the scan completes, click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt".
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries without proper guidance from an expert user.

...when finished, please post those logs back here. Thanks!

Any application you recognize? Find the file via windows explore and right click and check out the properties to see if it's a legitimate vendor or one you recognize.

In the meantime, there's some entries you can remove with HJT. Close your browser and check the following entries in HJT, click Fix and then REBOOT.

Hi.

I'm having two problems with my pc.

The first one, I constantly get a Svchost.exe pop up that renders my computer useless if I click OK, and somewhat useable if i click cancel. However, clicking cancel will stop the sound from working. The pop-up reads:

________________________________________________________________________________________________
schost.exe- Application Error

The instruction at "0x7c923845" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
Ok Cancel

____________________________________________________________________________________________

I am also haveing a problem where random pop ups come in. I don't have the Url, but I know it has something to do with News Daily 7, or some other scam sites.

These problems come randomly, daily, and way too often.

Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

I am totally desperate with my computer right now. I sent my computer to a technician cause I got infected and couldn't access at all my Windows Account. He installed Avast and MalwareBytes.

Here are the symptoms since I got my computer back :

- Avast always detects svchost.exe as a THREAT
- Several instances of svchost.exe are present and once arrived to above 300,000 K
- Windows Update would not download new updates and I would get an error message from Windows
(Host Process has been terminated)
- Above all, I get so many webpage redirects from google.

I did the following:

Scanned with Avast, SpyBot, Malware Byte, RootRepeal, Hijack This..
Nothing got rid of this nuisance and I am REALLLY REALLLY desperate...i need help to clean my computer.

Please get back to me, before I bang my head in the screen

Dear TECH GUys/Staff/People

I have A Dell, Windows Xp Professional Version 2002. With a Pentuim 4 CPU 1.80 GHZ. and 128 MB of ram. I have Ran many Viruses Scans. and there are none. i even used SPYBLAST and SPYBOT! And i had no SPYWARE. Now my computer was running smootly before with only 2-3,000K MEM USage for both explorer.exe and SVCHOST.EXE. Ever Since that New SASSER worm, came , that when i had problem. Now I was never infected By that SASSER Worm. But Until i downloaded that Microsoft Patch to risk from getting it. thats when MY SVCHOST and Explorer.exe Were both using 30,000K Mem Usage. after i downloaded the microsoft patch. i also Downloaded alll the updates i needed for My Computer from www.microsoft.com i have all Updates installed except for the Service 1 pack. and i even enabled the Xp Firewalll. I thought the reason that The Svchost.exe and explorer.exe processes are using up so much Mem usage. was because of the FIREWALL> so i disabled it. but they still were using up at least 15,000-20,000K Mem Usage each. I dont have alot of pprgrams/processes running. i have 4 of those svchost.exe processes running. the other 3 Are ok running at 30k to 1,000k Mem usage. And For CPU. all the processes are at 0. Except for System idle Process. which has 92 CPU. and explorer.exe only has 2 CPU. Under Username tab, the SVCHOST.exe process that is using up so much Mem usage is SYSTEM. When the Svchost.exe or explorer.exe reaches a certain Level like 40,000K mem usage. A Warn... Read more

i've been tring to update this security patch for .NET frameworks, and i'm still failing..i don't know what this error code stand for but i hope someone could help me out with this.

Answer:microsoft update problem!! with error

I would suggest you try completely removing .net from your machine. This is done by going to add remove programs, remove all instances of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. Reboot then reinstall from the download below and try running the updates again.

Hello,

I am running into something strange on every computer I come across... I install a clean WinXP Pro SP2, install device drivers, install Office 2003 Pro, visit Windows Update, opt to upgrade to Microsoft Update, and MS Update stops working, and the systems freeze often. I get 100% CPU usage, going to svchost.exe started by SYSTEM, and the system won't unlock until I force it closed. Unfreezes for a few minutes, but if I try MS Update again, it freezes again. Without trying MS Update, it locks up periodically with the svchost.exe at 100%. While trying to update, after waiting for the progress bar to chase itself for 35 minutes or so, it says that the page is experiencing difficulties or something like that and I get an Error Code of 0x8DDD0009 on the page. I do join this particular system to my domain at work, but this happens on all the Dells, HPs, Compaqs, and Gateways I've tried this on, on or off the domain. It happens in Denver, Fort Collins, and in Colorado Springs. I'm wondering if this is a regional thing with Colorado and the update server Microsoft is sticking me on. My techs on the east coast have not heard of this. My goal is just to have a system with XP, Office, and all the MS updates. It's not happening on any computer I've tried in the last month:. Here is a HJT log of this computer:

Ok so I built my computer and everything worked fine. I loaded XP professional on it and WoW and SC2 Vent etc. I then ran some updates (one of which was the new drivers for my gtx 460) and I began having problems opening programs. Every time I would open firefox or WoW, it would crash. I reinstalled windows XP and it seemed to fix it but the error has now returned (after I tried to install the gtx 460 drivers again). I reinstalled windows again and did not install the new drivers this time but the error remains. I've reinstalled windows multiple times now and have done nothing except install SP2, install drivers from the CDs, and load firefox. Now the problem seems to only happen when I open WoW or SC2 or when I try to load flash content (like youtube) on firefox. I really need help because I am begining to suspect it is my hardware. Here is a rundown

AMD Phenom II x2 555 (4 cores unlocked)
4GB G.skill ripjaws ddr3 1600 RAM
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO mobo
MSI hawk talon attack gtx 460
500GB WD hard drive (cant remember model but I doubt it would matter)

Please offer my any suggestions on what the problem is

Answer:Major issues with computer, cannot load programs

Perhaps you didn't configure your overclock correctly. You used DDR3 1600 RAM and the following is your RAM standard: DDR3 1800(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066/800 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory. I believe you have to overclock your system to utilize 1800 and 1600 RAM.

When faced with your choices of RAM supported by your motherboard, I have always chosen the fastest RAM that doesn't require overclocking so I don't have experience configuring the overclock.

Microsoft thought it had the Windows XP update redlining problem solved in this month's Black Tuesday crop of patches. Instead, the problem's back this month with a vengeance. The Microsoft Update team has analyzed the latest manifestation, come up with an explanation, and we're promised that a permanent solution will arrive "as soon as possible."

Windows Update team member Doug Neal has just posted a message to the Patch Management Mailing List that explains what's happening when Windows XP's Windows Update agent, wuauclt.exe (running in a SVCHOST wrapper), drives CPU utilization to 100 percent -- and can keep WinXP machines pegged at 100 percent for 15 minutes or longer.Click to expand...

I have just been to check for updates and I was wondering what this download was "High Priority UpdatesMicrosoft Corporation - Windows XP familyMicrosoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)Download size: 214 KB, less than 1 minuteThe Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool helps detect the presence of Microsoft products (other than Windows) that contain the GDI+ component. Microsoft customers can run this tool to help determine if a GDI+ security update is required. Microsoft recommends you visit the Office Update site to determine if your computer requires security updates for Office family products." I have read about it under details but I am none the wiser! It mention imaging software - does this refer to utilities like Drive Image 7 which I use for backups? Any advice would be very welcome as I am not sure if I need to download this? By the way I have Service Pack 2. CW

Hi,I've run all kinds of scanners so far and still have had no success in getting rid of the spyware, malware, or virus I have!! Whenever I try to go to the MS Update website, IE7 shows the URL as "http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/", however it takes me to the Google (english version) home page. When I try to click on search links in Google after running a search, it takes me to some random ad website on the first click, and if I go back to the search listings and click on the link a second time it will actually go through to the desired website.Further, on trying to go to the Lavasoft updates website, it will not allow me to download the updates. When I click on the link for the download, it takes me to the IE cannot display webpage notification. The link I am trying to download from is: http://dlserver.download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip. I cannot run the internal update options on Spybot or Ad-Aware either as they say they cannot connect to the server. In short, there is something definitely wrong and after running extensive searches and applications of all sorts. I have tried Trend Micro online scanner, Panda Security's online scanner, Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpyDoctor, Microsoft Live Online Scanner, Symantec Antivirus and more. I've even installed Autorun Eater and TeaTimer to try to get to the bottom of this, and to no avail! I think its time to let the pros here take a look!! Thank you for your help in advance! Hi

The process svchost.exe maxes out my cpu after my computer has been on for about 2 days. There is nothing special happening when it starts running. I have used Process Explorer to investigate and it is only when i stop the service "Routing and Remote Access" that the cpu usage comes back down to normal. However, this messes up my internet connection so it really is not an optimal solution. I would really appreciate if anyone could help me with this!

I am running XP Pro (I think SP2) on an IBM X40.

Answer:svchost.exe CPU usage - NOT Microsoft Update - Maybe Routing and Remote Access

Hello tiggerGutt

Try This

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.
2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".
3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local system account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

Hi

When I am on the page
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2592687 use the link for downloading "Download the Update for Windows 7 SP1 for x64-based systems package now." I end up on a page where I can push "Download". When I push it I end up on a page
with "Thank you for downloading" but nothing happens. There is a line with "If your download does not start after 30 seconds,
Click here" - if I do I end up on a page
where it is listed:
This page can?t be displayed

Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to
https://download.microsoft.com again. If this error persists, contact your site administrator.
TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 are all selected.

Anybody having an advice on what to do to get in touch with the file I want to download.

Hello everyone!
Since this is my first post I wish you all the best and thanks for your help.
I really appreciate it.

My problem is the following:

Since 2 days my cpu load is always at maximum load.
I searched the web and found out that many people have the same problem.
The funny thing and this is the reason I started a new thread is:

When I open the task manager or similiar programs like process explorer the cpu load goes back to idle or normal levels.

The reason I found out that svchost is causing the problem is simple:
I killed one (svchost)process at a time and when I got lucky the cpu load got idle again.

So I ask you if anybody has an idea why this is happening and why the cpu load idles out when I open the task manager.

Of course this is really annoying, the only thing that is helping right now is that I have the task manager opened constantly.

Thx in advance,
opt.prime

Answer:svchost.exe high cpu load problem

Take a look at this article. svchost is a Windows application that separates running services on multiple executables. The reason they did that is so that if one service fails then it wouldn't take down all running applications together. Thus it sounds like one of your services/applications is causing an issue.

Doing the following:
Will allow you to view which processes are being used for the svchost:
Using Process Explorer can give you more information that what the normal Task Manager would.

My computer wont load at all. It's a 8 month old Dell Dimension 2350. 60GB hard drive.

When it starts it asks for safe or normal mode. Either one that i choose it goes to an all blue page that says:

There has been an error in starting your windows software.
REGISTRY ERROR.

It goes for about 5 minutes backing up the disks and starts over.

Then it asks me again to choose Safe or Normal. Either one I choose it ends back up at the REGISTRY ERROR screen. and backs up the disks.

The onl thing I can get to is the F2 menu during the startup.

So I tried as a last resort to reinstall the windows xp disk and it goes for a couple minutes setting it up and ends up back at the blue screen with the REGISTRY ERROR. And this time it just goes to this screen and stops.

I am so confused on this and Dell basically said "it's a major problem, you need to take it to somebody"

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I can't function without that computer, I do all of my work on there. I also have about 2 weeks worth of files that I didn't back up. I can live without them but if I can save them it would be great.

Answer:Major Problem! Can't Load Windows XP at all. Need help ASAP.

I think I'd start by finding another computer to put the disk into and recover your files, then test the disk. You need to narrow down the possibilities, but if the XP CD doens't boot, my guess is there's some sort of hardware issue.

Have you opened it up and tried reseating all the cards, cables, and memory modules?

Hello,

I have a problem. In the task manager -> system resources, I see that a process called svchost.exe(netsvcs) (if I'm correct) is using about 50% of cpu. The cpu is AMD dual core 2.81GHz.
This doesn't always happen. Right now, it uses 48 %. Should I be concerned? Is it a legitimate process or malware. Malwarebytes did not find anything at a quick scan.

Please help me with this metter.

EDIT: now, the all cpu load is 6%. Bitdefender online scanner found no infection...

Answer:svchost.exe(netsvcs) problem cpu load high

Hi kenobi,

'Svchost.exe' is a generic process that calls 'Services' in Windows and one instance of that process may call 5 or more 'Services'. If critical 'Services' are being used, close to 50% of CPU usage may not be abnormal.

You may want to check the 'Services' that are related to this process at any given instance. To check the 'Services', running this 'Process', you may right click 'svchost.exe' and click 'Services'; related 'Services' will get highlighted. You may want to 'disable' the 'Services' that are not critical.

Hope this helps.

If you know the KB number, any search engine will do,

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Update for Windows 7 (KB2534366)

You can also look here,

Hello!

To get to the chase:

A certain website that me and my dad go on won't load on any browser with our internet connection. The problem only happens when connected to our internet connection and it works elsewhere (ex. using iPhone 3G data, university library). Since there are abundant amount of reasons why a webpage won't load, I think I narrowed it down to a specific problem after reading a few pages of websites on Google.

So what seems to be causing the problem is:

...occurs when viewing the same site over a router from more that one computer or application at the same time for a period of time. This activates something in the server software that puts your IP address on a so called "BAND LIST". Your web hosting company will not be able to correct it because they don't know what is going on because they can see that it is working fine from their point of view.

The explanation is useful, but the solution was to get a new router. Of course, there must be an easier way to fix it without buying a new router...which is why I need you guys to help if you can.

Thank you!

Answer:A certain website won't load - I think I know the problem

First and probably most obvious is to reboot the modem and router. Also your computer.

Next  would be to try a different DNS server like open dns. If you have DNS servers listed, then make a note of them if you have to revert.

If that does not work uninstall the network adapter in Device Manager. Then select Action, scan for hardware changes and let the adapter reinstall.

Last would be to try a later adapter driver. There was a thread here where a person could not access one site, https, and it was solved by reinstalling a later driver. What is the make and model of the computer if OEM? Right click the adapter you are using (NIC or wireless) in device manager. Select Properties and under the details tab, select Hardware ID's in the dropdown box. Copy and Paste the first line in your next post if the above suggestions do not work.

Hi all,

How're you all? I need some major help with this issue, I feel like the more troubleshooting I'm doing on my own, the more I'm messing up this computer.

Computer Specs (top of my head)
Computer: Compaq Presario V3000Z
OS: XP Home Edition
Processor: AMD Turion 64x2
Recovery Partition, No Recovery CD

The problem: Started with hal.dll being missing or corrupt. Took advice from some forums and went into XP Recovery Console and replaced the hal.dll from the Recovery CD (NOT for this computer).

Side note: Any attempt to bootcfg /scan or bootcfg /add or any bootcfg command did NOT recognize the C: drive. It only recognized the recovery partition (D:/MiniNT)

The 2nd problem: After replacing hal.dll, the computer informed me of a second problem. It said the ntoskrnl.exe file was missing or corrupt. So I followed the same protocol and replaced that file with the clean file from the Recovery CD.

The final and 3rd problem: After replacing the ntoskrnl.exe file, the computer read this:
"Windows could not start because of an error in the software.
Please report this problem as :
load needed DLLs for kernel
Please contact your support person to report this problem."

Additional problem: I cannot access the recovery partition anymore at the boot screen. When I press F11 it takes me directly to the aforementioned 3rd problem.

Side note: I have checked the boot.ini file in the Recovery Console and it looks fine.

If I have... Read more

Hello, pyrosaga :wave I see you do have some issues, for sure. Also, I noticed you tapped F11. If you were trying to go into safe mode, tap F8. F11 just re-sizes your screen.

Maybe in Safe Mode, you can get a little further, and I am sure someone will be along in due time.. But, do try the F8 for Safe Mode, for now, and see what you have.

hello everybody:

well, where to begin....

in windows xp - for ages i've had a partition problem that prevented me from running disk doc etc. therefore i was hijacked by numerous spywares.

i have adaware se, spyblaster, and spybot, with norton security. i was able to eliminate all of the badware except for 4 temporary internet files that i can not delete, even manually. the error message says that "someone else is using the program" and i have to end that process before i can delete the badware files. so the hijacker is somehow using the program so i cant delete it.

Question 1: how in the heck do i get rid of these 4 spyware programs embedded my 'local settings' ??

today somebody told me about microsoft's antispyware program and i attempted to download it. a box required me to say 'yes' to change my GOBACK settings. when the download finished i had 4 or 5 error boxes preventing complete download AND a box that said my GOBACK was either disabled or damaged.

QUestion 2: how can i repair my damaged GOBACK?? can i simply "GOBACK" to the previous history before i ever heard of microsoft's #!X program?

i have not yet 'run' the microsoft antispyware program. i do have an icon on my desktop but the program is not listed on my add/remove list so i cant get rid of it the normal way.

Question 3: can i simply put the spyware icon in the trash or do i need to do something more complex to find it and get rid of it.

I read on a post that there are holes in the early versions of XP (probably my original disks) that the updates fix. I tried to get to the msft website to update and all I get is a DNS error.

Hi,
I am currently new to this forum, but i have made a search to see if this problem has been brought up, but i cant seem to find it.

Anyways, about a month ago i've come up with serious troubles with many tasks.
Problems I am having are:
- Can't Sign In MSN, AIM, Trillain (Claims that there is a problem with my internet connection but there is not that i can find. - MSN also has
0x81000301 error)
- Can't go on many of Microsoft websites (hotmail.com, microsoft.com etc)
- Other websites also do not work, (ebay.com.au, ign.com)
- Norton Anti-Virus does not load up (the icon is there but when i click on it nothing happens)

This problem is quite annoying, and i have even tried reinstalling windows (formatting only c:\, alongside i also have 2 other drives)

This happened roughly at the beginning of September (i think maybe during SP2 update), Also i have tried emailing microsoft from another computer (hotmail.com does not work) about this problem and was given solutions, none that work.

I think this may be a virus of some sort but cannot find what. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time
Peter

I have a really odd problem...one particular website that I visit regularly (www.fatwallet.com) will not load properly, while every other page does. I do not get the 404 error, it just loads EXTREMELY slow and with no graphics. Here is a list of things that I've tried:

1) The website will not load in Firefox, IE, or mobile Safari.
2) Problem occurs on all three of my devices at home (desktop, laptop, iphone).
3) I have tried rebooting the machines and router.
4) I can ping the website just fine.
5) I have cleared my cache, cleared cookies, and performed a /flushdns.
6) I have tried loading the site after booting into safemode with networking.
7) I have tried disabling my antivirus (AVG free)
8) My router is currently using DNS servers from OpenDNS, but I have tried 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3
9) I have verified that the website DOES load properly outside my home (e.g. Starbucks)
10) I have tried NETSH WINSOCK RESET CATALOG
11) I have updated Flash on my browser.

I've been racking my brain over this for the past week. If anyone out there has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Answer:Strange Problem - One Particular Website Will Not Load Properly!

I would guess based on what you have done it's an issue with your router or the ISP. Have you tried accessing the site while using your ISP DNS servers instead of OpenDNS? Have you tried resetting your router?

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've asked for a refund from Kinguin just incase anyways.

Thanks

Answer:Windows 7 OEM iso for new machine. Error from Microsoft website

the error box from MS says it all.
If you search for your code on the web i suspect youll find loads of posts telling you what it is.

All I did was the major update which apparently removed the software and replaced it. Well why in the world would it mess up my Uverse connection and insists I am not connected and then displays airplane mode...why did it delete CCleaner? Why did it rob my license from my Adobe programs.( I have 2 that cost a fortune, Dreamweaver 6cs and Photoshop CS6 and can replace the license)  Above all what happened to my One Drive? It is not accessable and says I have to do something in the control panel, What a mess and I am in a fix since I need those things to ready my son's business site for Christmas. BY the way about the connection, it keeps disconnecting and going to airplane mode, However it does not effect the web connection,, I checked the connection and it is on my router..in on mode but I sm not sure what is going on,

Thank you

I started getting this error and BSOD after the last major update (Anniversary update?). My PC starts fine and is OK for hours, then suddenly falls over. It never did this before the update.

I have updated all my drivers and also run a scan and repair on the registry using the Registry utility in Advanced System Care, but it's still happening.

What else can I do without just rolling back to a restore point (which would presumably just try to update itself again...)

Thanks,

Dell Vostro 1510 laptop with Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

I noticed svchost.exe was using 100% of CPU.

I did the following that did NOTresolve the issue:

1. I installed a new hard drive (W7)

2. I went to task manager / processes / "show processes from all users" / and attempted to stop all the related services, approximately 8. 4 of them stopped and no improvement. The other 4 would not let me stop them.

3. I've been reading Dell, SevenForums.com and several other related sites, found many causes/solutions, tried them all but haven't resolved it.

4. I removed fan and cleaned out all dust. Fan runs fine. Thermal paste is good.

5. Installed CPUID HW MONITOR and cpu is not running hot. it's at 76 celsius (67 - 85 is the acceptable range)

6. Ran malwarebytes, custom scan. Nothing found.

7. Ran Avast boot time scan, nothing found.

*** The strangest thing is that my Bios version is A12. I downloaded A13 and A15 from Dell.com. When I attempt the Bios flash I get an error message that the "winphlash sw tool by phoenix tech cannot load driver. This driver has been blocked error code 1275. Confirm you have administrator priveledges". ***

- Therefore, is there a glitch/virus in the Bios causing this? Or is it unrelated and something else is causing it?

Thanks in advance!

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...ml#post2683782 - closed, didn't respond in time, see reasons below

Sorry I'm not doing the proper initial post, but the stuff just isn't working this time.

dds.scr wouldn't open, my computer recognized it as a AutoCAD script file and kept opening it up in Notepad.

GMER would run and at the end completely lock my computer up, couldn't even ctrl+alt+del, had to hold the power button to get it away. Did that several times b4 I gave up.

Here's where we're at:
Search engine results redirected to a different website every time (never the same one), even occasionally going to the one I clicked on but only maybe 1 of 5 times.
update.microsoft.com "Internet explorer could not display the webpage" when I type it directly in the browser. All websites go where they're supposed to when typed in (except msoft which won't load)

Thanks again for your help.

Answer:Search engine result redirected randomly, update.microsoft won't load

Hi Thos.

Make sure you can see file extensions

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
Uncheck the box next to Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click Apply, OK.

Rename dds.scr to dds.com and try again to run it.

For gmer, if you cannot complete a full scan with the new version of gmer using the indicated settings, try this next.
Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
Double click the exe file.
The program will begin to run, and perform an initial scan. If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No.
In any case, after the initial scan is complete, click on the Save button, and save the log file somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply

Alright folks...
A major problem here. I just completed performing SP2 update on my Mom's XP Home machine, 1.4 Ghz system, and it boots as far as a really pretty two-toned blue screen that says "Microsoft Windows XP" and the obligatory Logo, and simply stops. It never reaches a welcome screen with user names or anything. I have to reset or hard boot to escape this screen. Same with Safe Mode as well.
I've successfully updated about a dozen XP machines with SP2 with nary a glitch, burp or burble. This one did balk at the automatic update several times. It would download fine, but fail on the install. I had to shutdown and restart several times before it finally took and completed.
Anyone have a suggestion(s) ???

(I've continued trying to get it to boot while awaiting responses, it now no longer will boot beyond a "Dos" screen saying... "Searching for Boot record from IDE-0..OK") F-8 will NOT give the option of a safe boot now.

It goes no further. (Sigh)

Answer:Solved: Major SP2 update problem

No Takers huh?
I dug around in my salvage stacks here, found a 4 Gb hard drive. I temporarily installed it as primary master, formatted it, and installed XP on that drive, then was able to boot in, and access my previous drive. That enabled me to copy over my document files (which I'd neglected to do before installing SP2..*DUH*). I can now format my original 40 Gb drive, and properly reinstall XP Home (with SP2 Slipstreamed) and start over from scratch. Thanks for the grinning curiosity from all you observers

On August 27, 2015, I got a notice from Dell Update that there was a new version of the BIOS for my computer (a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop). My computer was out of warranty at that time, so I appreciated the notice, thinking Dell was good to update the BIOS. However, the update has proven to be a disaster.
Whenever the computer is idle for more than a half hour, it goes to blue screen and says it has encountered a problem and needs to restart. The error is called "kernel data inpage (sic) error." I first tried Dell Support, but they absolutely refused to do anything to fix it, because it is out of warranty. They told me to go back to a point before the update. No matter how much I argued that they had caused the problem, they still refused to fix it and would not help me regress the computer to an earlier time (I don't know how to do it)
I I have found out since that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver is missing and, according to Microsoft, is causing the problem I am having. I need Dell's help to replace that (so I choose the right version). But, now, Dell Detect won't run on my computer, and I can't find anything on the web site to tell me which one is right. Also, I am shut out of Dell chat and there is a multihour waited for phone support.
Before this happened I was ready to be a Dell customer for life. Now I feel like I'm being told to go away.
Has anyone else had an issue with this BIOS update?

I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to update my Catalyst drivers from 9.12 to 10.2.

Following the instructions, I first tried to uninstall 9.12. The program may not have uninstalled properly, but it did succeed in removing access to the uninstaller. I was not asked to reboot, the monitor resolution was not effected, and ATI CCC still appears when I right-click the desktop.

I then tried to install 10.2. I got as far as the Install button (before being presented the array of options) when the installation failed. The error message was
This program may not have installed properly
If this program did not install correctly, try reinstalling using settings that are compatible with this version of Windows.
The error message makes no sense as the version I attempted to install is the one for my OS (W7 Pro x64).

I then rebooted and tried installing again, but got the same error. I then downloaded and tried reinstalling 9.12, but again got the same error message.

At this point, my computer is functional, but I would like to resolve this problem. Catalyst is clearly still installed and it seems that the first step must be to remove it. Can you offer any suggestions? Is there any value in recovering the system to yesterday and trying to start over?

Answer:Major problem with ATI Catalyst update

I tried doing a system restore- both attempts failed. (It makes me extremely nervous that system restore cannot be trusted...)

Just downloaded a security update for .NET Framework 1.1 which, after install, gave me a pop-up box that stated the following:

To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.

Name: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
Publisher: Microsoft Corporation

I then got a pop-up error (having done nothing) of the following:

\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER987d.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER987d.dir00\appcompat.txt

..which appeared to effect nothing.

1) Is this a problem? Which svchost did it turn off? There are always a few running.

2) I uninstalled the update, which then blew-out .NET Framework 2.0 - and I have no idea why.

3) Don't you need .NET Framework 2.0 for certain things?

Example: upon installing newer ATi GPU drivers, it usually says ".NET Framework 2.0 needed for this install" - which I've seen in the past having installed it before doing Windows updates.

Now - I cannot re-download anything from MS, and Windows Update is not detecting (even directly via the site) that either is no longer installed on my system, and since the update was High Priority, that one especially doesn't make sense.

Help?

I've been trying to find out why I can't access the windows website (all browsers say it's a DNS error). I have scanned my computer with ZoneAlarm, spybot search and destroy and malwarebytes anti-malware with no success. I can access the windows website through a proxy which makes me think this is a spyware/malware problem.

EDIT: I also can't switch on the view hidden files/folders option for windows explorer, I select it and choose apply but the files don't show up and when I open up the folder options again it is switched off.

Anyway here is the log and any help is greatly appreciated:

For a few months now, microsoft.NT.exe tries to load itself on my computer. Sometimes my antivirus will quarantine it and it will stop, but mostly the antivirus is ineffective against it. It is accompanied by Drive32.exe and nestsh.exe and net1.exe usually start up too. I am currently running the 3 utilities asked of us, prior to posting, but GMER is taking forever and I wanted to get started on my post tonight. I will attach the 2 logs from hijack this and DDS. I will post the GMER log as soon as it is finished running.

All 3 logs have been posted, now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance.

My operating system is Mac OS X Version 10.7.5. Earlier, I accidentally quit Dropbox (from my Menubar). The green checkmark that indicates all files are updated was still there prior to my quitting the application. But when I quit Dropbox, it disappeared from my Menubar. I then downloaded and installed the latest version of Dropbox for Mac, and now the icon appears on my Menubar... but it's still connecting. It's been like this for around 4 hours already. I don't understand why my Dropbox folder doesn't indicate "connected" and why I can't access the Dropbox website, because I'm able to connect to the Internet.

I need to access my updated Dropbox folder (urgent). Please help, and thanks in advance!

Answer:Solved: My Dropbox folder won't update + the Dropbox website won't load.

I see you've marked your thread as being "solved". Would you please be so kind as to reply back what the solution was as this can be helpful to others who may experience the same problem.

I've got a wierd problem... I know there is in fact no viruses or spyware/hijacks of anykind because I just did a complete format because of a virus I had and no longer have. Anyways to the point...

When I try to do Windows Update using IE 6 SP1 I will not load the page... I got all the updates including SP1... but now I cannot check for anymore updates or get any other updated software (DirectX 9, WM 9... etc)

Also I try going to www.msn.com... that will not load either... it'll go for like 5mins then I get the "Cannot Display" page.

MSN Messenger I tried using the old v4.7 to login... it just saying logging in... go for 5mins then just goes back to the original screen when I gotta login again. So I installed the v6.2 same result. I do not understand wut is working against my internet that will not allow me to access those pages or msn messenger. I am using DSL 3.0mbps on routerpppoe. I can access this page ofcourse... google.com... yahoo.com... stickdeath.com...etc...etc. Just the microsoft website I cannot. I find this really odd for my msn messenger was working fine a week ago and I was able to get some of the updates for windows xp pro this morning after I formatted. I just all out of ideas for this 1...
Thanks,
John

I installed the Windows upgrade 8.1 on my Compaq laptop. When I restarted the computer, my desktop came up with the following error msg.

EXPLORER.EXE - APPLICATION ERROR
THE INSTRUCTION AT 0x3f30640c REFERENCED MEMORY AT 0x3f30640c.
THE MEMORY COULD NOT BE WRITTEN.
CLICK OK TO TERMINATE THE PRORGAM.

The problems I am having are:

1. When I try to click terminate, the box continues to pop up & then the computer will refresh the desk top.

2. I cannot access anything. When I try to open anything, nothing happens.

3. I contacted Microsoft and was told I purchased MS windows when I bought my computer so I need to contact HP. And HP is telling me my computer is out of warranty.
What I want to know is, why isn't MS held responsible for it's own product regardless of who it is bought through? Is this normal business practice in the computer world?

4. When the Windows update popped up I thought it was mandatory to keep my computer running correctly. Where did the pop up come from, HP or MS?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you,
Julie

Out of the blue, I got hit with a virus the other day. The most obvious aspect was "Antimalware Doctor", which I have since removed. I've run many scans, including avast boot scans, spybot s&d, combofix, and malwarebytes' antimalware.

Now it seems I am down to the following issues:

I am unable to load the Microsoft Update website
When I run a search in Google, the result links I click often redirect to an ad site
After my computer has been on for a while, I receive a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" crash message, which is soon followed by a loss of internet connection

Hi, so for a while now, every time when I try to open Curse Client, I get this screen.

I've went to the site where the "yes" button takes me and I download the thing but it doesn't do anything.
I've tried to .Net cleanup tool by Microsoft, that didn't work.
I tried to install it again, that didn't work.

It's getting pretty annoying since it's something I would like to work.
Any suggestions?

Ps. not sure if right forum, but seems fitting I think.

A couple of days ago I found an update for my GeForce Graphic card from Nvidia (GTX 260) (was also offered update from M$ Updates for graphic card), as I have always done in the past (many times) I went to the Nvidia site and downloaded the new driver, the method I have used to uninstall and reinstall the new driver is very similar to the tutorial found here on the Windows Seven site, things went bad very quickly and I am not sure what happened, anyways here is an explanation, maybe somebody can shed some light on this before I format and start over.

System: Win.7 Home Premium 64 bit w/SP1 (installation less than a year)
GeForce driver: Old - 340.52, updating to 341.44

Using "geek uninstaller" uninstalled as follows w/ AV turned off : 3D Vision Controller, 3D vision Driver, Phys X, Graphic driver (reboot), when rebooting I was asked to allow a new graphic adapter installation (restart now or later) (this may be where the problem stems from, I can't remember which option I took , proceeded to the new driver download and tried to install, using "custom" install, picking items to install and during the install received the "failed driver install" prompt.

I then had no graphic driver, rebooted and tried over again to no avail, used System Restore to roll back, it looked like all was well but when I tried again to use the method I described above "geek uninstaller" would NOT allow me to uninstall any of the graphic card components, in D... Read more

I tried this under the Security label, thinking Trojan or Malware, but have had no response, so I'm trying here.

A friend's XP Home PC runs properly until it is connected to the Internet, and svchost.exe uses 98% of the CPU. The problem does not happen when Windows Update is switched off - but happens again when connected to the WWW and Windows Update is connected. Programs will load from Desktop icons but Taskbar freezes.
I have run antivirus, anti adware/malware, Windows Defender, nothing found.
There is a lot about this on the Net but not simple enough for this wrinkly. Your help will be most welcome. I attach an HJT logfile.
Many thanks

PS I've just spent several untroubled minutes on the Internet using Mozilla Firefox, so is the problem with Internet Explorer, ActiveX or where? TIA for any help.

Answer:Computer will not load past Microsoft Screen After XP SP3 Upgrade

I am not really good at tech stuff...but I have been researching the sp3 problems. What kind of computer do you have? Intel/AMD?

There is a fix out there right now for AMD computers. There are some 'possible' fixes for Intel computers but they don't always work for all people. I can find links for you if that will help.

If you would like to uninstall sp3, since you CAN get to safe mode (some cannot after installing sp3), you can click on your start button, go to your control panel and choose to uninstall programs. Supposedly you will see service pack 3 there and you can choose to uninstall it.

I can't get into my safemode so I have not been able to do this...I'm just giving you what I have read.

After that, read everything you can about how to prep your computer before you re-install sp3...if you choose to do that.

So I was running windows update and pressed update for the large win10 update/upgrade that was released a while ago that required multiple gb of memory to do.

When I pressed restart now I got a write memory error for skype.exe so instead of going through the update process it just skipped it and when I try to start it now I get disk read error press any key to continue. The memory error is weird since I've had since a previous computer and this is a brand new one that also has this error.. I did use migration software from an SSD for the old computer to my new one but I've since formatted the new drive due to it not recognising my windows license key and tech support said I needed to install win 8 and upgrade again for it to work which I did.

It's a brand new SSD so it should not be a hardware failure I think.
What I've done so far is run my windows 10 disk and automatic fix or recovery didn't work. Trying to reset the pc it said that "the drive where windows is installed is locked unlock the drive". Next I tried running diskpart through command line it identifies the SSD fine (works in bios too). The SSD or volume is not set to read only according to diskpart though..

After that I tried running these commands:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
but the last command didn't work and it said "The requested system device cannot be found.".

So I have 2 requests.
1. Is there a way I can solve this issue without reform... Read more

a week ago I had a problem where windows update would not download any updates, I installed and ran superantispyware and malwarebytes anti malware and thought I removed the problem as i was able to download and install updates. Now whenever I open google chrome (which is set to open last tabs that were closed) it goes to the gmail login screen, on top of that I get multiple svchost blocks from the malwarebytes software. My computer has also slowed down alot and every now and then my windows resets to different settings (such as large icons in the taskbar instead of the set small icons and my pinned icons would be changed to internet explorer, a documents folder and another icon). I run the scans from superantispyware and malwarebytes as well as my avast anti virus and they all come back clean. When I run the dds tool it just hangs and i have to manually reset the computer. therefor i have attached the ark.txt file. any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been getting an error messages that says:
The exception breakpoint. A breakpoint has been reached... and

The instruction at "xxxxxxxxx" referenced memory at "xxxxxxxxxx". The memory could not be read. ( the x's are actually a series of numbers that I haven't written down; if need be I will write them down the next time the message pops up)

This all comes from an application error message involving svchost.exe.

I have moderate computer skills, but I don't know what this means. Also, this error started coming up soon after I installed System Mechanic 6 from Iolo technoloogies. I have no idea if it is a coincidence, because I used SM 5 for a long time and it worked fine. The computer I have is new and is a Compaq (HP). SM 5 was on it for a couple of months.

Side Note: My driver for my ATI graphics card was uninstalled today for some mysterious reason, but I reainstalled it.; could all this be linked to System Mechanic 6??

All help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Error with svchost.exe on computer start-up

Hi and Welcome to TSF

I'm not blaming System Mechanics at this point, but I never use third party registry editors, something always goes south

I cant say for sure but your system may be infected with a virus/trojan also. Plz jot down the exact error message and post it back here.

Hi all. I never knew a community like this existed and I am just going to thank everyone here who takes their own personal time to help people out and participate in solving other peoples problems.

To get started: My girlfriend has an Acer Aspire Notebook 3003LC running XP Service Pack 3. It has 256 RAM but (but today I bought 1GB from www.crucial.com). I put McAfee on it for her but she said it was way too slow and wanted it removed. Don't ask!! Anyway, she was complaining about her laptop running slow and was getting a few errors. One in particular temp2 so she downloaded AVG Free and did a full scan. It apparently cleaned up loads of Trojans and tracking cookies and other stuff as she put it. She then deleted the Virus Vault and uninstalled AVG so her laptop wouldn't be slow. When she rebooted her laptop she got the same error and also svchost.exe ones and also couldn't open any drives. Then came to me. I sorted out the drives problem simply enough and to prevent the svchost file appearing I turned it off from msconfig which worked but I am not sure if it is gone. Her computer is even slower than it ever was so I did some online searching and found this site. I've done the 5steps and downloaded and scanned and set-up everything I need. (It's like going to the Doctors with your trousers down ready to get your shot). Oh, she had also removed AVG before she gave it to me and she believed that was the cause of the slow PC.

Anyway, here is the log file and attached is the... Read more

I'm having trouble setting up my internet on a computer. I tried all the usual things and have narrowed the problem down to something between the computer and the router. I opened up the router (Linksys Wireless-G) page (with all the router settings, I know its got a name...) on the computer and have checked all the settings against another computer on the same router that works fine. I then went into the diagnostics page of the router settings and began trying to ping various websites. It successfully pinged www.google.com, but when I tried to open the same site in Firefox it would not load. I pasted the IP address for Google, 74.125.67.103, into Firefox and it loaded the page. When I try a search, or try to navigate away from the page I'm told that "the page cannot be displayed" just like before. I don't understand the problem, I can send and receive data but I can't open any webpages. I'm assuming there's a setting somewhere that I've overlooked, could someone please point me in the right direction?

Today my P70 received a WIN update which crippled Win10 totally. File Explorer, control panel and other crucial funtions crashed when started. Luckily i had a system back up two days old which I restored. I then tried to run the windows update again with exactly same results. I am planning to defer updates for a period now and until the reason has been discovered. Hope Lenovo does something about this.

Answer:URGENT WARNING - Thinkpad P70 major problem after WIN10 update

Are you scaling to 175%? Crashes in windows explorer and control panel specifically have been linked to 175% scaling. It's not a Lenovo issue it's MS.  See this reddit thread, MS employee replied. https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3yyh9v/175_dpi_scaling_still_keeps_crashing_explorer_and... I also go over a workaround I have been using.

Now for some reason, my start menu partially gets forced to classic (with the exception of the start button and menu being green and blue like XP but the task bar and everything along the bottom becomes grey randomly). Also, I get an error when my PC boots up and I check the Event Log and see the error below. Also, my Windows Firewall cannot be started. When I try to open it, it says that ICS cannot be started. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module msvcrt.dll, version 7.0.2600.2180, fault address 0x000367ef.

I also had the following error once:

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module esent.dll, version 5.1.2600.2780, fault address 0x0001baec.

I'm having trouble updating my FrontPage-created website, which has often been updated in the past. Now when it asks for username and password, I enter the values that have always worked in the past, but when the window disappears for a moment, it just reappears asking for the same information again. It just "bounces back" at me. It is SO frustrating.

Do I need to contact my ISP to establish the username and password? I'm fairly new at much of this.

Thanks,

Jondough

Dear Friend,
I am Anil from India. I have recently joined the forum after struggling for a week to stablise my unstable PC. I used to have some Anti Virus software on my pc before few years. But since last few years I was not having any AV software as this PC was not being used for surfing etc.
Since I started to use it again for surfing, downloading etc., I wanted to instal avast AV software. I installed it from some recent installer file with me. But when it tried to update the virus database, I got the message that "can't connect to server". Then I tried to open avast.com. But I again got the error message "The page cannot be displayed". Then I uninstalled the avast and tried to open other antivirus sites like norton, mcafee, avg etc., but all failed.
Then I tried to update my system using automatoc update utility. But again failed. microsoft.com also failed to open.
I use GPRS connection through cellular connection to browse the network.
Now I have downloaded and installed Hijack This.

Hi guys! my first real virus problem after 10 years - hope you can help!
First noticed a problem when Automatic Update got deactivated and I couldn't turn it on. Computer slowed down, couldn't download files using Firefox, which also crashed a few times unexpectedly. I looked into the services and found the file /system32\svchost.exe -k, which even to my amateur eyes looks suspicious. Searching your forums, I guessed combofix might fix the problem. So I tried that, and it seemed solved - for a day or so! Now I can't turn auto update on again. What should I do?

My background has been hijacked and says "Your system is infected. system stopped due to serious malfunction". I have lost administrative powers and have been locked out of system restore and my registry editor, among other things. I have downloaded at least 10 Malware/Spyware/virus scanners and tried to run them. Every time a scan begins to run the virus shuts the program down and i am no longer able to even open the program that was scanning. Also, when i try to run in safe mode, i get a blue screen that says something like my 'computer had a serious error and must shut down'. I'm at my wits end and have exhausted all options that are known to me. If someone could PLEASE help me resolve this problem i would be extremely grateful.
Thanks for your time.

I am a newbie here and have some major problems with my computer. Here is howthe story goes..

I have an old Athlon 900 Mhz computer with a K7S5A motherboard (It is the very early models. It does not have revision no. on it).
It had been working fine till now. I installed a new HD and had to reinstall all my software. Everything looked fine till I installed Nero (the latest revision from their website). It gave me a message that this has a known compatability issue with Windows XP and to go and install a patch. I could not find the patch in their website. Anyway, anytime I would try to burn a CD, the computer would reboot and it would reboot again when loading XP. This would go on till I would take the CD out of the drive. Then it would reboot and work normally.

I unistalled the latest version of Nero and installed the older version that I had and it is still rebooting.

I ran this eventvwr application and it found the following error:

"The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

I went to the microsoft website to find it but could not find anything pertinent.
I have now updated my Nero with the patch and updated my CR writer's firmware. I burned one CD without any hitch but when I tried to do a multisession burn on the same CD, the computer turned itself off immediately. I have to clear the CMOS inorder for it to start up without shutting down... Read more

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping I can get some help here. Currently I just upgraded my system and you can find my system specs in my signature. I upgraded to the motherboard, processor, and the graphics card and the ram. This currently is my gaming computer all it is used for is gaming and I'm having some problems with it. Currently I am in the process of playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and I'm having some wierd problems.

When i first start up my computer and I go to play the game the game will play for about 5 to 10 minutes and then for some reason either the game will crash or the whole entire computer will shut down and reset. This does this like 1 or 2 times then for some reason the game will play good for awhile then it will start restarting again.

Does anyone have a clue of what may be causing these problems?

Ok so here is the situation. I was given a Dell Latitude E6510 it had Windows 7 on it but the previous owner downgraded it to XP then tried to upgrade it back to 7. Now it is not detecting any drivers, any internet, etc. I have tried reinstalling 7 from the disc but nothing it does the same thing every time. Basically it does nothing. I am not very computer savvy when it comes to those areas. So if anyone could please help me figure this out let me know. Thank you ahead of time.

XP Repair install

Please read carefully and make sure you followed the warning links before initiating the Repair Install. You can print a text version for reference. repair.txt

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!

Hmmm.... I dunno how to explain this really. I updated my gfx drivers today to the latest Nvidia drivers, 66.93. The very 1st thing after I rebooted, I played a music cd, then I put in another one and my computer just shutdown all at once. It kept trying to reboot but wouldnt. So I took out the cd and it booted up just fine. So dumb me, put the cd back in the drive and it did it again. This is not a burnt CD I bought it at Walmart (Velvet Revolver BTW) . It loads a video when you put it in the drive. It crashes before this appears. I am running a virus scan as we speak and so far have found nothing. Is there a problem with the new Nvidia Drivers I need to know about? What other suggestions do you have?

P.S. I rolled back to the previous drivers and it still does it. Only with this disc. :S

Thanks,

Sky

OK so it all started on Saturday when we lost power in our house. NOw jsut to give you some background info, my CMOS battery is going bad, so I have issues sometimes when we lose power. I turned my computer back on and found that the sound wasnt working. I borrowed a sound card from my brother, and installed it, but I didnt screw it into the case. I had my computer running when i screwed it in, and it popped out and my computer shut down. When i went to restart it, I had sound working fine. THen my compmputer started crashing saying that it was recovering froma device failure. And every time I would re-boot I would have to reset the clock in Windows mode. Everytime I tried to play a game or something it would come up with the error message and say I need to re-boot. So i shut it down and took out the memory and put it back in, and restarted it. I went into BIOS and fixed the clock in there. Now I have no sound again, but I havent had any issues with my computer crashing with that error message. And now I am having an IP addy conflict with my laptop for some reason. My IP addy on my desktop has not changed at all. I was wondering if anyone could help me with either issue. Obviously I want sound more than my laptop and desktop running at the same time. Please help me!!!! Thanks!!!!

This is a problem a friend of mines has on her computer. She can't post here cause her computer is down. She downloaded the Spybot Search and Destroy but it says it needs an upgrade, but the internet will not allow it to search for this upgrade. Her firefox doesn't want to work either. Her internet connection is only working periodically (and she's surprised she can connect at times).* It's either like trying to trudge through the Tar Pits, or it freezes up and I have to hard reboot. She cleaned, cleaned and recleaned with the Ad-aware and CCleaner programs still nothing.

Any suggestions?

Having some problems with my computer lately. The sound devise randomly stops working as well as my Theme for my computer changes to the 98 version on its own, sometimes changing back, sometimes not.... The sound device seems to go out after the computer has these sort of hiccups, almost as it the driver for the chipset hiccups, very odd, i have Scanned with many Virus scanners, as well as trying online scanners, however, every time I start a scan with Trend Micro House call, it closes my firefox (as well as explorer) before the scan is done, this is very odd and i have never seen this before, However AVG and MCafee both cannot find anything. If anyone has any ideas on this, please help, My HJT log is below, thanks again!

Alright, not exactly how I wanted to wake today. I had my computer hibernated overnight, and when I turned on my computer, I got a message on the screen where you pick the user ID. I can't quite remember what it said (should have written it down), but it said something like that there was an error with a file D:/$mt (or something like that). It said it was due to an error with computer hardware or networking, and that the files had been deleted.

I went ahead and clicked ok, but when I went to "my computer", the entire D drive missing. For the record, my D drive is my second hard drive, where I place most of my saved material on my computer. So, I decided to restart my computer. But when I did that, the computer slowed down considerably. It took forever for windows to load, and when it did, it ran slow to the point where you couldn't really do anything. I checked "my computer" and saw that the D drive had returned, but I noticed that when i clicked it once, no drive information came on the left panel. I could not access it, and even if I tried to access another drive, it would not work well. It was slow, and I could not do anything without it freezing. Eventually, I got about 3 "not responding" problems and when I ended that task, nothing would show again on my screen. I ctrl alt del and tried to restart my computer, but it is now stuck on the "windows is shutting down" screen. Im afraid to turn off the power and turn the comp back o... Read more

Hi there,
Your problem is puzzling.
Normally on a standard home pc, there is drive A: for floppy, C: for Windows etc , D: for Optical-cd/dvd and E: etc for additional hard drives.
Do you have a cd/dvd drive installed?
