Can't backup Client PC(w/3 NICs) to Ghost 8.0 Console Server

Question: Can't backup Client PC(w/3 NICs) to Ghost 8.0 Console Server

I was able to successfully perform a 'remote client installation' of Ghost on 2 PC's, each containing 3 NICs by disabling all but my main network connection and then installing. (NOTE: You also have to be sure you are doing a 'clean' install. If you try and it fails you may have to manually clean all Ghost entries out of the Registry to get it to install) After the install completed I re-enabled the NICs necessary for normal operation. Then, In Ghost Console, right-clicking on the properties showed an error stating 'multiple NICs found ...', I followed some online advice and went into the configuration IP/Netmask settings and hardset the ethernet card template to the one I wanted it to use. Once that was done I was able to complete a clone/backup Task on the first PC successfully. However, on the second system, which happens to be 17 miles away and a little difficult to get to, it's not working. I can trigger the Task to clone, and through a PCAnywhere session to the remote PC I get a prompt saying that an Admin. task is starting to close all windows, so it's talking, but then the Ghost Cast Server session waits for it to complete the reboot and join the session to begin the backup, but it times-out. Any thoughts? The only difference I can think of is that the ethernet cards are different. The one that works is a Realtek, the one that doesn't is an Intel. Does anyone know of any other information on this? Is there a way I can 'log' what is going on? Snoop the network on a given port to see what it's doing? Any troubleshooting tips to gain insight are appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In our organization, we've got about 20 computers, 5 or 6 mobile users.
about a combined 40gb of data.

up until now we've been using a 3rd party online backup solution to keep the users documents and outlook data backed up. The more the data grows, the more the monthly price grows, and is becoming a budget problem.

We have 2 windows server 2003 standard machines, and I'm building a sandboxed environment replicating the current users connected to the domain, getting ready to test/debug/deploy windows server 2008 and some vista clients.

on the server 2003, I've tried setting up backup schedules with windows backup (ntbackup.exe) and its not doing what it's supposed to. Every time I set up a schedule, and wait for the right hour/30mins/10 mins whatever for the backup test, it doesn't work too well.

I need a cost effective solution to replace our online backup service.
It doesn't matter if we don't end up upgrading to windows server 2008/vista, I'm simply building a test environment to compare security and performance.

We have like I said..
about 20 desktops - XP SP3, Outlook 2003, and some documents, etc.
about 5 laptops - XP SP3, Outlook 2003/2007, documents etc..

I'd like the server to be able to backup all users documents, outlook data, at regular intervals, so if the mobile users go out of the office for a few hours or couple days, the backup pro... Read more

By all user documents to you mean explicitly the My Documents folder or the

The User Profile is much bigger and the Application Data folder (eg mine @ ~ 400mb)
and the Local Settings (mine @ ~483mb) are sizable but certainly 'not critical user data'.
The exceptions are Outlook keeps the PST under Local Settings and Oultlook Express is there too.
Some third part stuff (eg Thunderbird email) is found under Application Data.

Personally, I use Allway Sync for replicating my data (but it's not encrypted).
The selectivity of files is excellent any it is fast due to duplicating only changed files.
As I use it in manual mode, I've not tried the scheduling feature which is available.

Ok, so after a long time working fine, my desktops stopped backing up.

So, as recommended by the TN Article for Client Backup issues, I started the Database Repair Utility in the Dashboard.

It starts, and after a while it fails and says it fails due to an unknown problem. I click the link it provides to find help, and it dumps me in the generic Server2012E page. I've not been able to find any help on this issue.

Any idea's ?

I also ran a SFT /Scannow on the server. The last time I had a client backup issue this fixed it.

Exact Error Wording:

Backup repair did not complete.
An unknown error prevented the backup repair process from starting. Make sure that all services are running then try again.

The services I know to check are indeed running.

I am looking for a freeware client/server style backup solution I can deploy over the internet.  I have looked at urbackup, and it seems perfect, except the files are not encrypted on the server computer.  I need a way to have those files encrypted on the server computer, so they can only be accessed by the password set on the client computer.
Basically what I am trying to do is set up a cloud backup service for my customers.  I ask in advance that everyone refrain from answers such as "Well, this backup service has a great re seller program, you should just use it" I am familiar with many of the already existing solutions, but I want to create my own.
Thanks in advance.

So I'm trying to use the ghost console to administer the cloning process in my environment. I get stuck everytime I try to push an image to one of my test machines. I can successfully boot the computer using the boot partition and the console can see the computer. But when I execute a task to push the image, the client closes the server connection and disconnects from the server. It's really odd, here is what is read on the client machine:

15:28:39 192.168.2.10:1346 sending status to 192.168.2.28:1347
Force closing the server connection
15:28:39 192168.2.10:1346 disconnecting from 192.168.2.28:1347

Then it attempts to contact the session and establish a TCP connection which it can't cuz the damn client closed the connection. Anyways any insight would be helpful.

We have a Windows 2003 server with two nics in it. Nic one is for user access to the server (192.168.215.27), Nic two is connected to a switch that is used for tape backup purposes only (10.10.0.16). The server is running our testing software from QuestionMark and everything is working great. But they have a tool that runs from users desktop called Author Manager that allows testing administrators to edit test question, answers and scoring.
Okay here is the problem, as long as nic two is enabled the author cannot connect to the server. If disabled then no problems at all. No routing is enabled and a persistent static route has been added to tell all 192.168.215.0 traffic is to use the default gateway of 192.168.215.1 only. We have seen this before with VPN client connections because checking with a tracert showed that the last connect was to the 10.10.0.0 subnet, but adding the persistent static route would correct that problem. QM support will only say that they do not support 2 nic servers, which I find silly.
So the question is has anyone had this issue before and is there a way to fix it. And if routing is disabled why would a nic pass its traffic off to another nic. Is thier anyway to force the two nics to isolate themselves from each other.

Hi Guys,

I've got a PC running 2003 Server that has 3 NICs installed. One NIC is for the WAN connection, One NIC is for a LAN network on the 10.x.x.x range and the last NIC is for another LAN network on the 192.168.x.x range. As the two LAN networks are on different IP ranges, how do I get these two LANs to be able to talk to each other (such as PING etc)?. I unsure of how to set up static routes so if any help can be given it will be great. Also how do I bind IP addresses to the NICs in 2003 Server. Once again, Thanks

Answer:problem of 2 NICs on Win Server

Hi, hopefully this will help you understand what is happedning.

When I set up my first service running 2008 with two NICS, I had a read of the following. Please note it is quite detailed, but it's a great education resource and should help you get your head around what's happening.

You didn't say if your clients are using DHCP or static addresses, or if both the NICs are configured on the same or different subnets, or of there are any switches or routers in the network, so I'm making a number of assumptions here.

Hi there,

After a hard drive failure, had to reinstall windows 2000 server. Pre failure the set up was like this, and worked without a problem.

1 server - win2k - dhcp.
4 pcs - all dhcp enabled to obtain from win2k server. Call them A,B,C and D.

3 of those pcs had 2 nics installed, which are for internet connection. 1 of those (A) obtains its ip from an adsl router that has dhcp.
The other two (B and C) are assigned fixed ips (as given by the isp).

Now, the set up is exactly the same, but when the NIC that is on the LAN network is enabled, the there is no internet access. Once it is disabled, internet access is restored. Is this a DNS issue?

DNS and DHCP are enabled on the server. The NIC on the server is assigned a static ip with the same ip given as the dns and the gateway.

Any help will be extremely GRATEFULLY received as this whole episode (rebuilding the server) has been driving me insane.

Server OS Windows Server 2012 Essentials
Client OS: Windows 7 Professional

I recently upgraded from Home Server 2011 to Essentials 2012. This required me to create a Domain which I did, and the other PC's connect with no problem. Using the same procedure to connect my main machine, and it does not see any other computers that are in the domain when I go to network places, not even the server. I have checked that the primary DNS is pointing to 2012 Essentials server. I can connect to the other PCs by manually typing in the other PC names.

Another problem is that I cannot access the shared folders in the Dashboard. I log in as an administrator and have checked permissions. When I try to access these shared folders it gives me the access denied message.

Does anyone know what is going on with these two problems?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:One client not seeing other computers in the Domain. Client OS Win7, Server OS 2012

I didn't use 2012 Essentials yet - only regular 2012 and domain is working without any problem.
Main thing is that client pc must have dns connected to server - on server you can set forwarding for external internet access.
If you have problems with domain you could try rejoin to domain on client PC - you'll verify then that everything is configured properly - I can recommend tool called Profile Wizard http://www.forensit.com/Profwiz/ It's great for rejoining to domain or when you want to switch to other domain without lose your profile.
Maybe Dasboard require for local administrator privileges to work properly ?

Windows Server 2003 SP2 x64
(Does nothing other than FTP, not using IIS)

NIC 1 = Local Lan, connected to switch
IP=10.1.0.X
Subnet=255.255.255.0
Gateway=10.1.0.X
DNS=10.1.0.X

NIC 2 = Internet, no switch/router, direct line from fiber connection
IP=66.XXX.XXX.XXX
Subnet=255.255.255.0
Gateway=66.XXX.XXX.XXX

Hey guys,

I have a question that maybe you guys can help with. Now bow to my awesome paint skills:

All computers are on the LAN and have access to the shares in the media server via the local workgroup.

All IP's are statically asigned, 192.168.1.xxx and so on. Now, here is the question, my media server has dual nic's. One of them is a Gigabit (currently using) and one a standard 10/100 (unused).

Is there a way that I can use both nics on the media server to separate my LAN from the internet and not have to use 2 nics on every pc? (as in using the 10/100 nic for internet and the gigabit nic for LAN only on media server?) Is there a benefit?

Already have strong passwords/user accounts for the shares, software firewals, the NAT and AV. Im just thinking of doing this for extra security, so that LAN and internet are separate on this box with shares if possible.

thanks

Answer:Question about network (media server w/2 nics)

It kinda sounds like you want to work with backchanneling. With more than one PC, this can be quite crazy.

Otherwise, then maybe you want to put your "media server" between the router and PCs? I'm not completely clear on what you want to accomplish I guess.

I'm trying to setup a small test network on the bench but I'm running in what I think is a routing issue. My network consists fairly basic:

Cable Modem -> Netgear Router -> Office PC's (DHCP), File Server (Static IP).

The file server has 4 NICs on board so I was trying to take one of the other NICs and set it up to be a DHCP server so that I can re-image some machines and not saturate our main network. I was able to get the DHCP working on Interface 2 and I setup Routing and Remote Access, but I can not get the two interfaces to route traffic between the two of them. I can ping Interface 1 from the new network but I can not ping any other device on the "office" network. I did make sure that there was no default gateway setup for Interface 2 but now I'm just spinning my wheels. Here's a quick diagram of my network, any thoughts as I continue to RTFM?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 (about which I know very little) running on my SR2. The SR2 has dual built in NICs. Because I want to take advantage of some of WHS' features, I am running WHS in a virtualbox VM.

I am using the box as a file server/media streamer. I have files being served by both Ubuntu and by the WHS, so both OSs will be serving files at different times.

Given this setup, what is the best way to utilize the NICs? Should I just team them and let ubuntu/virtualbox handle the load distribution?

Or, should I somehow dedicate the 2nd NIC to Virtualbox and leave the 1st NIC to ubuntu?

I'm a linux noob, so easy guides are helpful.

I did find this guide on how to bond the nics together.

I maintain a network with about 700 access, distro and core switches in less than ideal physical conditions. As a result I need to travel around and console into isolated switches on a regular basis. I have laptops for this purpose but they are beginning to break down and tend to be bulky and difficult to hold in one hand while typing with the other.

I am checking out some of the upcoming tablet style PC's as possible replacement for these laptops. Something with a serial port is preferred, but a USB port will work just as well. Something with expandable storage, quick to boot, able to run a SSH client and fairly solid so I don't have to panic every time someone on my team bumps it.

Does anybody out there have experience with a similar piece of equipment?

Answer:Laptop Backup...To Ghost or not to Ghost

The advantage to ghost is you can image the laptop, operating system, installed programs and data (everything). So if something went wrong you would just lay down the ghost image on the laptop. Disadvantage is you will need to purchase Ghost. My suggestion would be to just backup the needed data to your PC. It's a good idea to have a backup anyway and rebuilding one laptop from scratch is better then purchasing Ghost (approx $70)(at least from my prespective).

Hello all,

I have been looking for several days and I have yet to find any machines for sale that offer dual NIC support. I have tried looking at the typical sites, including Google but to no avail. So, I figured I would look for help here.

Ideally I need a box that uses the atom processor (low power), dual network cards, and has a relatively large hard drive (500+ GB).

Anyone have any suggestions?

I looked here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859110001 and found an almost perfect match. The only problem is that it does not have dual lan which is a requirement for me. I could go and purchase a USB network adapter like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812146017 but I don't see that as an ideal solution compared to dual onboard network ports.

So, reaching out to see if anyone knows of a box like this that has dual NICs for a reasonable price (under $500 US).

Thanks!!!

Answer:Looking for Linux Intel Atom Server w/2 NICs & large HDD

I'm not sure I know of any Atom based units that have dual-NICs. A machine you might want to consider is something like the Acer Revo 3610 (I'm thinking of getting one of these - since you're in the US it'll probably be half the price over there). The unit comes with an dual core Atom 330 (I believe this shows up as 4 CPUs because it has hyper-threading on each core, or so I've been told), 4GB or RAM, and a 500GB HDD. You could then purchase a USB-to-RJ45 adapter.

Please let me know which unit you buy, as I'm very interested in doing the same (I want a low power consumption Ubuntu server).

So I need to find out the MAC addresses of Teamed NICs without access to the box. Only remote desktop is my tool. I've tried ipconfig ./all, the properties of the NIC, and in Windows 2k3 tried the "status" and "details" on the network connection.

Anyone know any other ways to get a MAC from a NIC?

When you do an "ipconfig /all", the physical address is the mac address. You should have three associated with a team (one for each NIC, and one for the virtual team NIC).

What I really want was to get something like the Linksys RV082 or some other router/switch with Dual WAN.

Since they are too expensive for my budget I was wondering if I could just use 2 seperate routers going into nic 1 and nic 2 in the windows 2003 server.

Then setup windows 2003 such that is path 1 (primary path) timed out after x amount of seconds, it would automatically try path 2.
The sticky issue is that if 2 routers are being used, the server will have 2 seperate NAT IP's. Lets say 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.100.100

Does server 2003 support this?

EDIT: If the above is more of a pain than it's worth.. can anyone reccommend the cheapest of the cisco routers that support dual wan? rackmount preferred.

Answer:setup server 2003 for failover internet with dual nics behind NAT

If they're Intel cards, you should be able to use Intel's PROset for Adapter Fault Tolerance to do it.

hi all, 1st time posting to a support forum.

my system: hp pavilion media center m7457c desktop w/pentium dou 3.0mhz, 3.0 mgh, 2gb RAM, running winxp [pro i think since i can run gpedit.msc] media center edition version 2002 sp2, phoenix BIOS [coudlnt find the version number of the BIOS ]

for many moons now i have used ghost backup, which requires booting from a floppy if u wanna restore the c: drive [i have only 1 OS on my machine, on the c: drive], but now, alas, even my desktop no longer sports a floppy drive [my laptops have always been floppyless], and so, booting from a floppy to restore the c: drive in an emergency is no longer an option.

i need help and advice on the following 3 options:

1. use an entirely different program or method for backup. any ideas? any ideas as easy and dependable as ghost? [which, as u know, allows for an exact image of the OS primary partition to be copied or restored since, as ur booting from DOS on a floppy, the OS primary partition is closed or locked or whatever]

2. i tried booting with BartPE on a CD, booted fine, plugged in a usb2.0 to IDE connector, which was connected to a mostly blank, partitioned hardrive [running from an external power supply. i could have used a regular external harddrive, but i didnt wanna buy one, and i have many IDE hardrives lying around] which i intended to use as a storage space for a ghost image of my internal c: drive, the idea being that i could than at any time [of emergency] reboot with ... I have been using Ghost to re-image other desktops and laptops without any problems, either booting from DOS floppy, from CD ROM or using PXE networks services to boot the machines and load the PC-DOS supplied with Ghost and the DOS Ghost client.

However with the Portege M100 (which is the only Tosh machine I have tried so far) I manage to get the PC-DOS loaded and the Ghost client begins to load but hangs at the splash screen and is unusable requiring a reboot.

Has anyone else had this issue or know of any fix I can use to allow me to manage my Portege OS's with Ghost.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

I am having an issue with offline files created offline syncing back to the server. I have set up a network share to be available offline on a client computer. All files are available offline without issue. Here is the issue however. If I set the folder to work offline any file I create in the folder when it is offline just disappears when the folder comes back online, there are no conflicts or sync failures reported in sync center. If I create a new folder offline the folder does sync back to the server. Any changes made to an existing file are also replicated back to the server once the share is back online. So the issue is only with newly created files when the share is offline. I have not been able to replicate this error on any other file server in our environment, However I have recreated the issue with multiple shares with multiple Win 7 clients on this file server.

Steps taken so far.

Checked and reset permission levels on the share.
Recreated new shares from scratch for testing.
Disabled and enabled offline files on the client computer and cleared the offline cache.
Check various registry entry settings.
Disabled cashing on the File server.
Tested with XP the issue does not exist with XP.

I have spent hours researching this error online to no avail.

The clients are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
The File server is Server 2003 Standard 32 bit with SP2

Any help or ideas would be most welcome.

Answer:Offline Folder sync issue, Win 7 Client Server 2003 Flie Server.

I've seen the complaints about this problem but with no clear resolution. There are some hot fixes listed that may help, updating to Windows 7 SP1 is supposed to help in some cases but nothing seems for certain.

No way for me to recreate this problem but apparently others have the same problem.

There is a process running on my computer called csrss.exe

I went to http://www.processlibrary.com and looked it up and came up with 2 different things. One says it is a Trojan and needs to be removed. The same exact process name also says it is Microsoft client server runtime server and SHOULD NOT be removed.

How I am supposed to tell the difference so I do not make a mistake by either leaving it alone or removing it???

Answer:Process: csrss.exe (trojan or Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server?)

Hi I'm working on a client/server with the Java programming language and trying to figure out how to protect my server. With my current Virus/Firewall protection suite theres nothing I can do to keep out unwanted Java applications on the port I choose to allow the Java SE Binary through for clients accessing the server application. ESET Smart Security 4 is what I am using. Does anybody know of a security suite that would allow only a specific Java application to get through the firewall? I'm not to sure on this subject because my firewall is identifying any Java application as only the "Java SE Binary" and not I'm sure if you can even really name your Java application like you would something you would write in C++. Any information would be appreciated, thank you.

I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

2. Also, I know that Windows XP has an RDP client, I've used before on many occasions, but what about all the Windows 2000 clients that I still have out there. What should I do for them to access the new Terminal Servers?

Answer:Terminal Server license server(s)? RDP client for Windows2K?

I'm not 100% sure on #1, but I believe that the TS licensing becomes integrated into the AD, so if one DC goes down, the other one will be able to check licensing. On another note, if you are using the TS for administration only, I don't believe you needs the TS Licensing to be installed.

For #2, you can download the latest version of the RDP client from MS's website. It should also be available through Windows Updates, although I think Win2K isn't supported any longer, other than Critical Updates.

A friend is moving his business, and the new business park that he's setting up shop in does not have anyway to get any wired internet to his building, excluding a T1 line, which he can't justify the cost of.

One windows 7 machine acts as the server, primarily for Quickbooks database, and there are two other windows 7 machines that are clients, reading off said database.

He's getting one of those usb dongles for wireless internet service, for the server only (the other two computers will be tethered to a smartphone for internet for QB and windows updates periodically).

They do NOT want to share the servers wireless connection to the other machines.

My only concern was if the server will continue to try to check the LAN for internet connectivity, or will it check both network connections when one fails, or is there a setting I can tell them to change to ensure it knows to go to the wireless dongle for internet all the time, without interfering with the workstations talking to the server over the LAN to get to the database?

The setup at the old office was business class DSL, they are using a relatively new Linksys router, which had the DSL authentication information.

Thank you!

Answer:LAN network for server/client only, USB hotspot for server internet.

I managed to find a solution this morning, for anyone that's interested, the whole article is here: Multiple Network Connections at the Same Time on Windows | Ivan Zlatev

But the short answer is, under the advanced properties of TCP/IP v4, uncheck automatic metric, set your internet to a value of 1, and the LAN to a value of 9999.

I'm in the process of installing an application server that requires SQL Server 2008 R2 (x64) on a separate device. However, I'm noticing this error message whenever I try to install the application through its proprietary configuration tool:

Answer:Client(s) can't connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 server

You were on the right track, but having the server listen on localhost/127.0.0.1 may or may not be what you want. Regardless, you need to tell SQL to bind to the ethernet interface since you're trying to connect to it over the network.

Do a netstat -a on the server and see if you have 0.0.0.0:1433 or the ethernet interface:1433. You could also do telnet serverip 1433.

If it's not listening on the desired interface, you need to look up how tell SQL to bind to that interface (I don't know, I'm not familiar with it either).

Question: DVD ghost backup

I have tried to ghost my hard drive onto CD-R using Norton Ghost, but when it gets almost to the end of burning it tells me that there is an error, and I am left with a coaster. I have set Ghost to span Multiple CD-Rs but it has done it twice now. Is there any way to use my DVD burner to make a ghost image from a DOS command. Is it possible to do this and is there a program that would allow you to do this. I have a Hitachi Deskstar hard drive but it did not come with a utilities disk that might have allowed me to ghost it. Thanks

Hello,
Can anyone help me with a question regarding Norton Ghost and re-installing a CD backup set.
A few weeks ago i made a complete backup of my C:\ drive with Norton Ghost onto 4 CD's and thought that i would not have to use them.

But i installed a program that caused some problems and after trying to solve it, i think that i made it worse.
So i thought that i would use the CD backup set instead, and put the C:\ drive back to the state it was in before i installed the troublesome program.

But when i did this, my Norton Internet Security 2001 program instead of coming up with the 305 days left as it was when i did the backup, it came up with the days left that were on the C:\ drive before i did the re-install (234 days left).

The question that i want to know is how does this happen?

As i thought that the CD backup overwrote all of the files on the C:\ drive, and it would install Norton Security back to the days left as it was when i did the backup?

As all of the other programs i have on the backup went back to the settings that were on the day i made the backup, but for some reason this happens only with Norton Internet Security.

Can i do anything about this happening, so that the days re-install to the days left that are on the backup?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:Norton Ghost Backup

The Norton software uses the date it was originally installed and compares it to the current date...it's probably set in the registry or in a custom dll they created expressly for this purpose. It would be different if you had done a fresh install of Windoze and a fresh install of the trialware AV software.

I picked up an old 700mhz PC for my dad. I've installed and fully configured and tweaked Windows XP on the machine, including all patches and such.

Is there a way I can backup the whole installation and make that image easily restore-able in case he breaks everything down the line?

If so, where do I begin? I've never dabbled into backups before.

Answer:Backup (Ghost) and Restore?

Damn man. Do you hate your dad that much? 700mhz? lol

Acronis is probably the best software to date if you're willing to shell out $40 for the home version.

But if you're looking for free solutions, check out your hard drive manufacturer's web sites for their utilities. Most of them offer downloadable software you can use to clone your drives or take snapshots of it.

Answer:norton ghost backup

If your "partition" is from your hard-disk that is IDE or SATA (internal drive), then you DON'T need to use the "advanced settings" option... Also, if you have a DVD-RW I suggest you backing up onto that cause if your hard-disk completely fails you wont have anything to recover from!!!!!Also.... if you are using "Norton Ghost 9.0", then some of the options are different and you can only backup onto rewritable media (hard-disks.. aka partitions, cd-rw, dvd-rw and dvd+rw)I used to use ghost, but found that when I wanted to recover the system it could take up to 2 hours, so I switched to "Acronis True Image" which recovers my system in 20 minutes max!!!!!

Answer:advice re first ghost backup

sunny staines,There are 2 ways of using Norton Ghost:1. to make a backup image of a drive2. to clone a driveMaking a backup image leaves a file with a .GHO extension on a disk. You use Norton Ghost again to restore that image back to the drive it came from. It is a total back-up of the drive. It does not affect the other contents of the drive on which you make the Ghost image..Cloning a drive means making an exact copy of the drive. You might want to do this to set up 2 or more pcs identically if they have the same motherboard etc; it is easier than installing XP from scratch on multiple pcs if you have multiple licences. Cloning a drive wipes out any data that may have been on the drive being written to.It sounds as though what you have done is clone your drive rather than back it up. In theory, i your main drive fails, just take it out and replace it with the clone.Regards,Felix

I have used Norton Ghost for severel years, making an image of my C:, so I allways is able to return to last backup-stage. But with Windows 8 and UEFI boot, there are now 3 partitions that has to be in a "complete" systembackup, and only one of these partitions has a drive-letter. Does Norton Ghost support this?
Or is it better to use Windows 8 own backupfunction? (aka a complete system-disk backup on another HDD)

Answer:Ghost or Windows 8 best to backup?

I don't know about Ghost, but Windows own backup is flaky.

There are several 3rd party imaging programs which are more flexible and reliable.

Answer:how to take backup using Norton Ghost

You haven't told us what version of Ghost you need help with!
If it's the latest version (Ghost 15), the manual is here in PDF format:
http://uk.norton.com/support/product...pvid=nghost_15

To download it to your PC, right click the link on that page and choose "Save as" or "Save link as". You need Adobe Reader to read the manual.

When you have made a backup of a computer system with Norton Ghost, you cannot use that backup on a different computer unless it has exactly the same hardware components and it's hard drive is the same capacity or larger.

Hi I am having problems getting my PC to boot afterI decided to create a more recent backup using ghost,My drive is partioned so I backed up the C drive(XP and progs) onto my f drive which contains all my data, replacing the previous ghostimage, something I've done many times before without a problem. It went through the usual checks and rebooted,it then said the process had failed and to click retry, or return to windows, and if I did nothing it would return to windows in 20 seconds. No matter what I click on, or nothing at all the PC just hangs and I have to turn off the PC manually,It then goes back to the same loop I've already described.I tried using my ghost boot disk,to reload my previous image from my F drive but it loads the floppy then locks up on the ghost splash screen, forcing me to reboot.I tried using the xp disc and the recovery console, when it comes to the part to click on the drive with your OS onits only showing the F drive which only has my data on, not XP, as if it can't see my C drive.Does anyone out there have any ideas of anything I can try to get the PC to start,as I have loads of progs and games configured,I don't want to lose.Or am I doomed.I have the XP CD Disc and a win XP start up floppy disc.In the worst case scenario what is the procedure for reinstalling XP over itself so I don't lose any progs or settings etc.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

I have an 80Gb HD as a master.I have a second 80Gb HD as a backup.Question;Should I continue using Ghost to clone from Master to Slave or,should I look into the possibility of setting up my raid facility.MB is A7N8X DeLuxe, 512 DDR, 2500+ Barton, XP Pro.Present HD usage is about 20% so I have plenty of capacity on one disc. What might the advantages of Raid be ?

Answer:Raid or Ghost as a backup.

If you want to use RAID make sure that forst of all your motherboard supports it. Also if you are going to set RAID up make sure you go for 'Mirroring' type and not the 'Stripe' mode. The Mirroring mode makes a backup where as the Stripe mode spreads the data over the TWO drives meaning if ONE of the drives fails you lose everything. Not nice! I have Norton Ghost 10, I was wondering how I do a backup restore DVD like those OEMs have. Thanks.

Answer:Making a Ghost Backup DVD?

Not sure if Ghost 10 can be used, but I use BartPE to make the CD's/DVD's

Bart PE has an option to 'include contents of this folder' when creating the ISO image,
- built a customers PC
- get it all configured, updated, tested, etc
- boot from BartPE, map a network drive to my server, make a Ghost image of customers PC (I use Ghost 8.2)
- go into the Bart program, copy the customers GHO files into the certain Bart folder, make an ISO image
(Image now has Bootable BartPE with network support, usb drive support, AV, etc, and also contains the ghost backup image on it)
- tape it inside the customers case in a zip lock bag (they never lose it that way)

Hello
I have just used Ghost 2003 to backup my computers hard drive.
When I installed the last CD-R, in order to copy my hard drive, it recorded happily until there was about 5M left to copy, but when the disc came out of my read/writer, Ghost said there was something wrong.
(I had plenty of room left on this CD)

I am not sure if it finished this last Disc correctly or not?
As I have a log of this fault can I check to see if the disc is ok?
I do not know how to check any of this?
As I have used up about 14 CD-R Discs to copy my 12G of data on the hard drive, and it was the last disc, will I need to do it all over again?

I would be very grateful if any body can help with this.
Thanks

Gary.

Answer:Ghost Backup Problem

Welcome to TSG.

If you are sure of exactly what size it divided the images to then what I would do is to have it write a ghost image to the hard drive with the same size selected. Then just record the last one.

I wouldn’t chance that it was OK with the indications you have given. If you have an Office Max nearby they have a spindle of 50 CDRs free after rebate. If you are counting on the ghost I would write to the HD split in 680Mb files and write those to CD if Ghost says the image is OK.

I am building my business computer running xp Pro. I have 2 hard drives, 1 for backups. What is the best way or software to duplicate my daily backups? I have been told bootback is good however I have never heard of it. Please make suggestions. Thank you

Answer:Backup software/ ghost?

NovaStor backup is one of the easiest to use. and you can back up to a hard drive or to CD or DVD disc's.

While Ghost will dot he job, I have seen even experienced people trash and installation they were trying to back up using it. which is why I don't generally recommend it.

Hi, I'm backing up my C drive to dvds. I don't have enough HD space to back it up locally. However I got a error writing to the DVD #3. Ghost stopped with error msg (bad media) I put in a new blank dvd and couldn't find a way to resume from that point. Do I have to start all over and with dvd one? I can't find a way to resume backup from disk 3.

Ive just done a nice clean reinstall of WinXp and loaded all the updates, what a perfect time to back up the harddrive for the next time i want to do a clean install.

I have a copy of Ghost, but from what I understand from the last time I used it, it backs up not the "used" portions of the harddrive, but ALL the drive. I don't need the 95% of blank space backed up, just the 'good stuff'

Can anyone suggest a way to completely back up Windows without ending up with 5 DVDr's (or CDR) worth of "empty space"

Thank you in advance.

I dont know what version of Ghost you have, but the Ghost 2003 I use only backs up the data, not the entire drive. I have a 40G drive, with 4.7G used, and the Ghost image is 3.9G total. Reinstall and check your settings.

Had DriveImage7 (sector based) - but due to it no longer being supported, and its tendency to rename files into cryptic strings all by itself, I decided to buy Ghost 14.0

Any input on its performance and reliability would be appreciated.

Contactin their support, they tell me basically Ghost will backup everything but a recovery partition, whatever that is.

Figured this is the time to start with a clean new system install, my new build.

Hello peeps!

I'm a newbie here. Sorry if the title is so lame, but I do have to do some research

Ghost Imaging Backup --> I'm confused with this.
What is the detail meaning of Ghost Imaging Backup? What I understand is the purpose is to do backup, but then, is it used to backup system image, or backup files/data, or both?

I did few research from the net, videos from youtube, and I found so many different method, and I'm not sure what is the most efficient way to do backup.

So here's my questions:

1. Does system image is only to backup OS?
2. If so, do I have to backup data & OS separately?

P/s: I'm using windows 7 starter, which has the backup & restore function, so I guess I don't need to install any ghost software.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:What is Ghost Imaging Backup, in details

Imaging captures an exact copy of a partition (if you choose) or an entire disk drive of your system. Therefore, it captures everything that is installed or sitting on the drive when the image is taken. Thus, it contains the OS, Programs and Data (as long as all of that stuff is on the partition or the drive being imaged.

Ghost is an imaging type program. It captures the entire partition or drive.

Take my computer for example. I have an 80GB SSD for my OS and that is my C drive. I install the OS and the apps on this drive. I then have a D drive...which is all of my data, internet downloads, music, audio/video files. I regularly take images of my C drive...so in the event of a disaster, I can restore my C drive and be right back to where I was when the image was taken (my OS and my programs will have reverted back). However, because I keep data on D and choose to NOT image that drive....that drive will stay intact. So, any new data will be on that drive.

For me, I take regular USB backups of my actual data from D to another location on a regular basis...so that I don't lose this data in the event of a disaster. And less frequently I take a new image of C (once a month, before some big updates or before I update drivers). Used in combination, this backup routine works great for me.

I'm running Norton Ghost 12 on a new Vista laptop and am having some problems. A month ago a full recovery point backup worked fine, and weekly incremental backups have run each week with no problems. The total disk usage on the drive is around 30Gb and I have a Western Digital external USB drive that I'm backing up onto. I've also run a file and folders backup that completed normally.

However, with a new month rolling round Ghost tries to create a new full recovery point. It gets to between 33% and 48% (having created a file with zero size) and then just sits for hours (I've left it overnight at 33% and it hadn't moved by the following morning).

I can't see any errors in the logs and the disk was defragmented a couple of days ago, so I don't know why Ghost seems to be hanging.

Any ideas on how to work out what's happening would be appreciated.

Thanks

I keep getting a message up when I schedule a backup on a computer to back up one of its drives to another computer. It keeps saying 'A specified logon session does not exist'. After I do the backup manually though, it asks for a domain, username and password to access the other computer. I type that in and then it works fine. Then if I schedule a backup to run before the computer is restarted it works fine still, like it remembers the password until it is restarted. Is there any way to make it remember for good! There don't seem to be any options for it within Norton Ghost. Both computers have a single username/password. Maybe I should get rid of the username thing - is there any point in just having one username?Just to add, both computers are running WinXP Pro with NTFS and are using Norton Ghost 9.0Thanks

I have been experimenting with various backup and restore methods on my Toshiba Qosmio G30 with Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

I am running a Windows Home Server (WHS) box that has been doing backups of the Qosmio for months. The problem is I can't restore them because of the boot structure of the Qosmio (via a hidden partition) and the need to load RAID drivers as part of the WHS restore process.

So I thought I would try using Norton Ghost 12 to save drive images onto a USB drive instead. The most interesting thing happened: when starting up, Ghost 12 extacted backup database information from Vista Backup and Restore. From this info, Ghost 12 appears to have decided that my XP and Vista boot partitions had already been backup up, and refuses to even see them as backup candidates. Not surprisingly, these were the very partitions I wanted to backup.

If anyone knows how Backup and Restore works behind the scenes, please tell me how to removed the "backed-up" status from a drive, so I can use Ghost 12 ?

Acronis True Image Home 11 has no such issues with these partitions. Presumably it and Backup and Restore don't speak !

Hi, after reading that I should have an external backup, I bought a Nexstar 3 USB 3.0. compatible with USB 2.0. This in part as I lost my last Computer during an electrical storm about thirty miles away. I just want to back up about once a week.
I also bought Norton Ghost. Norton Ghost seeming to be working ok. Question: why do I need it? Apparently with Windows 7 I can just transfer Data to the external disc. I have to ask this question as the instructions coming with Norton Ghost don't seem to have been written by a human being. I should like to uninstall Norton Ghost , reformat the external and start again. Is this OK?

Thanks

Answer:external backup, Norton Ghost

I'm a big fan of disk imaging software, but I'm not overly fond of Ghost for exactly the reason you state. The best of breed is Acronis True Image, but it's not free. An excellent free alternative is Macrium Reflect. I'd suggest using either of those on a regular basis.

Hi everyone,

A friend and I set up a little network for this guy we know and we're just having a little debate which to use to back up his data.

Network setup;

He has 4 pc's, all running XP Pro. He's main machine, we call server, has two 200 GB Hds. This machine stores all the data from the other 3 client computers. He wants the first 200 Gb drive which stores the partitions for the client computers to be backed up into the second 200 Gb drive.

Question;

Which is better to use Norton Ghost 2003 or Windows XP Pro backup utility?

Thanks inadvance for any replies and it is appreciated.

Hi

I'm using Ghost 9, and have setup an unscheduled backup job which is a base image plus incrementals.

However, frequently when I want to backup incremental changes to my drive, it instead creates a new base.

Sometimes, when I tell Ghost that I want to run a job, it gives me a choice popup, where I can choose base, base with incrementals, and incremental. Sometimes, while there is a perfectly valid base file saved on my backup disk, the incremental option is disabled (grayed out) and my only choice is to do another base. Not what I wanted.

How does Ghost determine if it can do an incremental over a baseline, and when does it decide to create a new baseline instead?

Please identify if you are guessing, or if you actually have knowledge about this subject. If you have any supporting references please provide them in the form of URL links.

Thanks for any help you may provide

Hi,
For the last week I have been trying to understand the concepts of Ghost 8.0.

Imaging machines over the network, restoring etc. all works fine. The thing I am really interested in is the backup regimes. If I got it well, this version of Ghost supports creating incremental backups of cloned machines, just what I need!!
Tried a few backups (using the backup regime wizard) and it works, but what surprises me is that there is no possibility to backup just a partition in stead of the complete disc. Creating images however, lets me choose wether to backup a certain partition or the complete disc.
I don't care about other partitions than the system on the targeted computer, so backing up the complete disc is not interesting for me and a waste of disc space.

In short:
Is there even a possibility to create incremental backups (via the backup regime option) of a certain partition in stead of complete harddisc?? (maybe upgrading to Ghost 9.0)

Thanks a lot!

Answer:Symantec Ghost 8.0 backup regimes

You can back up any partitions of your hdd with Norton Ghost 8. Usually it will highlight all partitions to be backed up, but you simply click the partition to be backed up and select file to backup or CDR/DVD to back up. When select backup up to a file, you need to give it a name and back it up onto a different partition.

Backing up my entire 60GB harddrive onto CDs seems like an endless process. I am running Win XP and have Norton System Works which includes the Ghost program (I've never used it). Let's say I bought a second harddrive just for backup purposes and also installed XP. Here are my questions:

1. If I set the bios to boot up the old drive (master) as "HDD 0" can I assume it will just be automatic and boot to that drive each time?

2. If that is so, should I list "HDD 1" as 2nd in the boot order so I can call it up to copy to it, or should I exclude it?

Now for Ghost. I'm not really sure what to do. If I make a ghost copy of the master hdd and copy it to the 2nd hdd:

3. The backup includes the OS, so how does it work to back it up on top of another OS?

4. And each time I backup to HDD 1, will the new files simply overwrite the old ones?

5. Once I've made my ghost copy, how do I get to the backup drive so I can copy it?

6. I've heard Ghost will read an NTFS drive (which is what I prefer) but will only write to FAT 32. Therefore, the 2nd hdd would have to be a FAT drive. Is that correct?

I believe you need to use DOS to start Ghost:

7. Do you need DOS again to copy it to the backup drive?

8. XP doesn't have DOS. Do I use some kind of boot disk?

Sorry for the long post.

I have a windows XP system operating with a new copy of Ghost backing up two discs to an intranet disc server. Unfortunately during a backup there was a power cut of about 10 minutes. When I restarted the PC, after a colleague had restarted the disc server, I noticed Ghost was busy but didn't mind as it was good to see it had survived the crash. It hasn't changed status since then and won't cancel the backup. I've tried to delete the task, logout/in cancel the job, but all to no avail. I could really do with some help as I use this PC to develope code and need to be sure it doesn't get lost ;-) . I can't find any answers on the Symantec web site, or a way of communicating with them, so I'm hoping somebody has a clue.

Hi Patrick,

Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your posting.

Since the server that you were sending the backup to had a power outage, the backup most likely did not complete, or other problems may have occurred on the server, which are preventing the backup from completing. This power-outage may also have affected your Windows XP machine as well, and may have corrupted the Norton Ghost application.

Make sure that you can access the server in Windows, where you are sending the Ghost backup. If you can access the server, launch Ghost and create a new backup job and try to send the backup to server again.

If the Ghost application is still having ... Read more

I'm not sure if this is possible or not but here is what I want out of the end product. I want to put the DVD that I make (which has my HD image on it) into my computer and recover the image to the HD.

Here is the scenario: I want to build a PC for my mom. Run all the updates, install all the apps, virus scan, firewall, DVD software and all the utilities that she needs and get it running smoothly for her.

Then, with Ghost 9, I want to make a backup of that perfect fresh install. I know I can write the image to DVD (s), but the computer won't boot to them directly, correct?

is there a way that if she pops the DVD in, it will reinstall the "fresh" system back to the way it was? I'd be great if it would even re-format the partition if it is possible. I guess I am kind of trying to make recovery disks like Compaq and HP have with their new computers.

Does anyone know hoe this is done and if it is possible? I would like to do it without a floppy if possible. Thank a lot for any help you can give me!!!

Answer:Making a bootable DVD backup with Ghost 9?

Id know and can walk you through it... It's really a fairly easy thing to do.
First you need to actually create a floppy for starting up a system with the DVD. On the floppy, you need the autoexec.bat that will launch whatever it is that you want to run, the config.sys with all the drivers for the DVD for dos and anything else you will need. I use Perl and have Perl installed on the DVD so that i can run special functions, but I don't think that will be needed for you. All you need is to make a bit of .....

you do know how to write a few simple batch commands right?

I read a article today in Computeredge magazine and one of the readers sent in his notes for simplifying backup and restore in Ghost 2003.

He uses DOS autoexec.bat to do it. This will not be useful to everyone but might help some understand the program a little better.

The link is

I used to use a batch file with GHOST 2003 to do automated backups on several machines. I had a scheduled task run to swap my BOOT.INI file to boot up in MS-DOS, run the GHOST, and then boot back into Windows.

I find it much easier to just schedule a backup with Acronis True Image and it happens.

I am using Norton Ghost to make a backup of my hardrive. The problem that I have is that both drives are exactly the same model and size. When using Ghost it only show the two drives. Problem is I am not sure which ones is the original and which one is the backup drive. If I proceed with the wrong drive I am going to lose all the info I am trying to backup.Any help please ??

Answer:Solved: Using Norton Ghost for Backup ??

I always make my partitions different sizes so I can tell them apart in Ghost. So you might consider shrinking one just slightly with a partitioning tool such as GParted.

You would then have to change your backup procedure from "drive to drive" to "partition to partition".
