I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All. I was copying files from my Seagate GoFlex for MAC to a cloud based service when, all of the sudden, everything froze. after about 10 minutes I could move the mouse. I couldn't get anything else to respond. I couldn't even force quit other applications. I didn't know what to do. After about an hour of it not doing anything I didn't know what to do other than pull the plug on the laptop and wait for its battery to die before I pulled the HD out. More experienced users may have known of a better option, but nothing else came to me.Anyway, after that the HD would no longer mount and it won't mount on other people's machines either. Does anyone know what I am dealing with here? Inerrupted processes? Corrupted files? Possibile data loss? What would a data recovery specialist do to help me get my files back? Does it sound like they're salvagable? Anything helps. Thank you so much.Best Regards,Alex

A friend of mine has a seagate external freeagent gloflex hard drive which used to be mine. She hasn't used it for a while. she tried to use it on her new Windows 10 pc for the first time but although it says the drive is working ok under system devices when clicking on the drive nothing happens. I took it home as I have an old vista PC which it used to work on. When I connected it , it showed the drive in system devices but when I went on my computer to see if it showed up it wasn't there just the internal drive showed up . Would be grateful for any ideas please.

My daughter gave me a Seagate GoFlex freeagent Portable Hard drive for Christmas as I have many files that I would like to store and share. The problem is that I us a HP Pavilion 6465 and the usb port on it is not fast enough. When trying to set up the hard drive it tells me I must install a 2.0 or 3.0 USB. Is that something that can be done on this computer and if so how. I use XP Home 2002 Service pack 2. The processor Intel Celeron with 434 MHZ, 256 MB Ram. It has had the hard drive changed and also has a 2nd hard drive. The main drive has 64.4 GB free.

Thanks for any help you may give me.

Answer:Seagate GoFlex freeagent Portable Hard Drive

Hello,
The backup software that Seagate put on the drive needs USB 2 or 3. You could add a USB PCI card. Just be sure you have an available slot.

I have a brand new Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 1 TB external HDD. Actually it's my dad's and I was suspicious that it might have a virus. So I booted my laptop through Ubuntu and plugged my Seagate once it booted successfully. There was no virus, just some default files that can be found on a new HDD, like UserManuals, an exe file also which I guess might have been the driver. There were some other files as well but I can't remember the names. Relieved that there is no virus, I formatted the Seagate HDD because I knew (or believed) that those files aren't really necessary to run the HD. A message appeared which said the disk couldn't be formatted properly but still was opening with no data in it. Yesterday I wanted some data from my friend and plugged in the HD in her computer. The HD did open and drive window appeared with no data in it. Everything fine. Suddenly the window disappeared and drive was not there even in My Computer. I unplugged and replugged the HD many times but the HD could not be detected. Now I can't use this Seagate HD, as it's not even being detected.

What went wrong? Did something happen due to the deletion of those default files? Or something else went wrong?

Please help!

Hello, I've just been buying a 1,5TB Seagate FreeAgent Goflex USB3 drive.Unfortunatly, even after installation of the latest NEC electronics USB 3 Host controller drivers (v1.0.19.0) and latest USB 3 firmware (v3.0.2.5) from Lenovo support site, the drive is still not recognized on the USB3 ports of the machine. It is well recognized and working on the USB2 port of the W510.I'm using Windows 7 64 bit version on my W510. I tried the drive on another computer under windows 7 64 bit and it worked at very high speed (as expected for USB3). It seems to be related to the W510 config. Any solution for this problem ? Thanks

Answer:W510 doesn't recognize Seagate FreeAgent Goflex USB3 drive

This is the common compatibility issue with external drives
You should update the external drive firmware and install it's driver in Windows before  connecting it.

Try these steps as it should resolve the issue.

Hi-

I recently went to back-up my system on my FreeAgent, but was unable to and got the following message:

The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with (0x80041321)

I've never seen this message before and have never encountered a problem with the drive. I haven't made any changes, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Has anyone encountered this issue as well?

Thanks much.

One of my many drive is the FreeAgent GoFlex Drive 1.5 TB pocket sized external drive - it works fine on every other computer but on mine it stopped working - actually when I plug it in to my computer it freezes my computer every time I plug it in however to unfreeze my computer all I have to do is unplug the drive (plug-in and unplug I mean connect and disconnect USB cable from my USB port on my computer).

I have a 700 watt Power supply and my other USB devices work just fine which includes all my other external hard drives - I did replace my Geforce 8800 GT grap[hics card with the Geforce GTx550 Ti graphics card.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:FreeAgent GoFlex Drive works on every computer but mine

Have you tried connecting it to a different USB port? It's possible that the port you are using is miswired and is putting out the wrong amount of voltage.

Hello All,

An external HD, with all of our family home vids, got knocked off the desk onto the floor. When I plug it into the USB, it does recognize the drive, but sometimes it shows the capacity info and sometimes it doesn't. When it does show the capacity info, I can get into the drive and see the files. They even show up as thumbnails, but when I click in the thumbnail the vid starts to load but it never plays. So, it can see the files, it just can't play them. There is no clicking sound coming from the drive. My bro-in-law thinks that the controller board is either bad or disconnected.

I did run CHKDSK on E:, but it didn't seem to do anything. It never ended, and I figured it couldn't recognize the disk, so I aborted it. Do I need to let it run no matter how long it takes?

I was thinking about a recovery program, but figured it wouldn't do any good, since it seems to me that there is a physical issue...should I still try one?

If there is a physical issue, I have replaced some components in my CPU (vid card, power supply, RAM) but I have never opened any type of hard drive. Is this something that I could tackle, or is it best to leave it to the professionals and pay through the nose?

Thanks for your time!

I purchased a 2TB Seagate GoFlex Desk External HDD and Windows did not auto-detect it. So I went under Device Manager and under Other Devices, the Seagate drive was listed with the yellow exclamation. It shows that the driver is not found. I had windows search online and it found nothing. The only way I know to get it back is to do a repair/restore of windows. I am afraid to do this as I have to much to risk losing. Is there any other way to obtain this driver.

PS:

I plugged the device into another computer also running Windows 7 (only home not pro) and it auto-detected right away. So I know for sure the device works.
My computer though is most definitely missing the driver.

Answer:Seagate GoFlex Desk Driver

Just a thought. If I have another computer running the same OS, just home not pro, and it recognizes the drive, is there a way to tell what driver it is using? If so, can I just copy the driver to my computer?

I have a Seagate GoFlex External hard drive (2TB). I originally formatted with an apple computer, running OSX, which I no longer have. I am trying to format it to run on my windows computer. The bios seems to recognize it, but the Operating system does not. I am also unable to format it on my Linux computer. I have had the BIOS on both computers scan the GoFlex drive, but the bios says it is fine, no problems with it. Does anyone have any Ideas?
Edit: I've also tried the troubleshooting on the Seagate website, But my Disk Management won't open, it just says "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service..." and only that
It will NOT load the information about disks

Edit: I've gotten it to work, or at least that part. Do I want to initalize it with an MBR or GPT partitioning style?

Edit: I have tried to initalize it, but it says it could not because of I/O device error
The link to the error message screen shot is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ef71h0kze9yczom/Error.jpg
Could this be a driver problem? or is the Hard Drive bad. (I sure hope it's not)

Maybe it is just the unit that is faulty not the harddrive, can you not remove the hard drive, install it as a slave, by moving the little plastic cap, then installing it on your PC.

Hey guys,

I've recently purchased a GoFlex hard drive for backup storage on my home network. It's an external hard drive connected to my wireless modem via ethernet, which (ideally) is accessible by any device on the wireless network. I've inserted the CD, followed the instructions, and got it working on one of two laptops.

The second laptop is having issues. I've inserted the CD, followed the same steps, but it cannot seem to find the GoFlex device.

1) I've confirmed that both laptops are on the same network and the same workgroup.
2) I've tried connecting laptop #2 directly via ethernet to the modem, but even then it cannot find the device.

I'm looking for suggestions here. If any details about OS, router, or device is required, then I'll be happy to post.

Thanks for the help!

Only a 40% approval rating, I would reconsider spending the time to try to make it work. I read some of the 19 one star ratings, seems like you could have a common problem that even Seagate hasn't tried to offer support for. That's a shame because I have a few small portable Seagate drives and they have worked very well for me, I liked the brand.

Hello, I have a goflex seagate 500gb usb 2.0 it as working fine yesterday. Now i plug it in it installed a unknow device. can t see it in disk management or other programs. tryied different cable and pc still the same. my information on that is crucial. The disk is spinning fine.

Answer:Seagate GoFlex Unknow device

I had a GoFlex at one point. Now I have a 2.5" - 500GB internal hard drive that I use for backups. Excellent hard drive. But I had nothing but trouble using the external hard drive.

I found that the bridge connector - the portion of the external drive that plugs into the standard SATA connectors on the 2.5" drive - was loose. If I applied pressure in and up I could get it to connect. If I let go it disconnected.

Decision time: You can pry the bridge connector off of the external shell casing. This will expose the SATA connectors. Unfortunately the casing is in the way of the normal connectors you would use to connect it to a desktop. This means you must pry open the casing to remove the standard 2.5" hard drive inside. This will void any warranty if there is one still valid. So there's the decision: data or warranty? No warranty, no decision - remove the drive.

Now connect the drive directly to the PC like any other SATA hard drive. You should be able to get to your data that way.
If the drive is not recognized (in BIOS or Windows) connected directly then it may be defective. Post back if this is the case.

I have just purchased a Nexus 10 and a Seagate Goflex Home Drive for backing up and specially media streaming.
Unfortunately I can not get the GoFlex Access App to work on my Nexus.
I have contacted Seagate and they are telling me there's an incompatibility with the Android version 4.2.2 for why the app is not allowing access to the Goflex Home. They are saying 4.1 worked fine and will be looking into the issue.
In the meanwhile, as I spend a lot of money (and a lot of research) on 2 devices which are not working together, I am wondering if anyone has come across the same problem and found a solution.
I have tried a couple of other file managers. Although the Goflex is recognised on the network, when I open the folder it says something like "directory/folder empty'.
I am grateful for any help.

Answer:Cant get Android 4.2 to work on Seagate Goflex App

So why cannot you get the old version of android, and run that. what about using it from a USB stick or SD card if these will work with nexus

Hello,

I just bought (so it is returnable) a 2 TB seagate usb 2.0 HDD. Since it was only $100, I thought it was too good to pass up...

I guess my first question is whether I should use the Seagate software (Memeo) that came with it, or just do my own thing?

Second, I would like my 'own thing' to be a backup like Mozy does, where it backs up in the background anything that changes, including files that are 'open', like OUTLOOK.PST. Then you can go and pick which files to restore if anything bad should happen. Is there any software out there like this?

Detail:The drive is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, which has a swappable connector, so I presume this same drive could be used on a network...?

ALSO, it has Memeo backup software. Is this any good? What is the best/easiest?

Thanks!

Also, I was thinking of using this type of background backup to backup my Notebook files to my Desktop PC thru the home network, then the files on the Desktop PC would be automatically backed up to the Seagate, which is connected to the Desktop HD. Does this sound too kludgy, or is it a reasonable setup?

FWIW, I do own Macrium, so if that does anything. I also have my data in a separate partition from my system files, and periodically do a system restore disc and image. Now, having recently increased my RAM from 2GB to 4GB, and finding out that 32 bit Win 7 does not access all of the available RAM in 4GB, I am going to do a complete system overhaul, reformatting the internal HD on my Notebook... I don't know anything about Memeo. I'd find out if it is an imaging product or a conventional backup product. You certainly wouldn't need it, but it might be useful.

I'd do my own thing. There are numerous imaging and non-imaging products available for free. Microsoft makes one called Synctoy. Windows 7 itself has both a conventional and an imaging backup program built in, but some people prefer to use other tools.

If you have a Seagate drive, you can get a free download of the Seagate version of Acronis True Image from the Seagate web site. It and Macrium are both imaging products and both work pretty well.

I'm not sure about products that can back up open files.

I'd advise you not to rely on an imaging product to back up your own personal files. Images are OK for backing up your operating system.

Hello,

I just went out and purchased a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2 TB USB 2.0 hard drive for about $100 because I thought it was too good to pass up. Now I am having second thoughts, and wondering if I should return it, or if I got a good deal. I need to upgrade my Windows 7 OS to 64 bit from 32 bit because, I am told, the 32 bit version does not access all of the memory, but the 64 bit does. So, being the packrat that I am with documents and files, I just wanted to dump all of my documents and downloads and pictures and videos onto a large Hard Drive and then deal with them later.

Then, I would reformat my notebook computer's HDD and install fresh Win 7 64 bit and Office 2010 64 bit. But, I also need a backup system for this setup. I have been using Mozy automated backup, but I would like to somehow get rid of that fee of $5 monthly. I know it is not a lot, but if I keep paying it forever, it will be.

The way Mozy works is that it automatically backs up changed files in the background, and even can back up open files. Then you go to their Website and choose files if you ever need to restore one or all of your files. I would like a system to run this way on my laptop.

What I was thinking is that the laptop could backup to the desktop thru my wifi network, then the desktop would have the 2 TB hd connected, and that would automatically be backed up. So, the notebook, would have 2 back up sets, one on the desktop and one on the hard drive. But then what if I have pictu... Read more

Answer:Is the Seagate GoFlex Desk a good HDD?

I own 2 GoFlex drives. I just don't have the desktop I have the portable models. I love them for some of the reasons you mentioned. They allow you to pick the connection you want. 2 TB for $100 - why complain?

Like you, I don't trust external drives or internal ones either. My backup strategy is to use at least 2 good backup programs and back up to at least 2 externals. That way if one external goes out you still have your backups. I think you made a good buy. Externals are just internal drives in an enclosure. They can fail just like internals do. But for the price you paid, you couldn't buy 2 TB internal drives.

BTW, if you own a Seagate or Western Digital drive they both offer backup programs on their web sites. Both are scaled down versions of Acronis.

Just as some background..... I have 2 of these Seagate GoFlex Home NAS devices. A 1Tb version, and a 2TB version.

Lately the 1TB version has been giving me issues with logging in. I have it as a mapped network drive which should up under My Computer. It (and the other 3 NAS drives) show as disconnected when I first look at them. Seagate NAS 2TB and the 2 disks on my DLink DNS323 connect as soon as I clcik on them, and I can view files no problem.
THe 1TB Seagate asks for authentication, despite the credentials already saved. It should just open right away as the other 3 drives do. When I enter my PW, I get refused.

- I know my login UNAME and PWORD.
- I can access the server from the static IP I set.
- When I click on Seagate Share (this is through the web interface) it brings up the directories and ultimately the files on the NAS no problem. Then... if I click on the mapped network drive I can access the files.

I shouldn't have to open a browser, and login to the server first. I don't have to do that on the 2TB device, and never has to do this before. I don't know what has changed to cause this behaviour.

Would appreciate some insight.

I'm concerned that the device or the drive may be going bad... but I have no direct eveidence of that, just some quirky login behaviour.

Thanks

Following on from the discussion below in the Ransomware thread, I've been trying to turn off SMB1 in Windows (given it's been highlighted as an security risk) but still retain access to my Seagate Goflex Home, which is an old NAS device.

However I've not had any luck with the change suggested.

I don't think there's an officially supported way to get into the Linux it's running, but there is a workaround on the OpenStora website. This allowed me to access the /etc/samba folder and replace the smb.conf with a modified version containing the extra "max protocol " line, as suggested by @jimbo45.

I tried both SMB3 and SMB2, rebooting between each change.

But I still can't access the fileshare on a Windows 10 machine with the SMB1 feature switched off.

I did run the smbstatus command, which returned:
Samba version 3.0.28-0.el5.8.oe5

I'm wondering if the version of Samba running on this NSA might simply be too old to support SMB2 or SMB3 ?

It's a long time since I used Unix to any degree so it's possible I missed something.

Here's part of the original discussion:

It turns out that this stopped me accessing my old NAS drive (at least the way I've been using it) so I've been going round turning SMB1 back on again.

I recall when I set this device up (SEAGATE GoFlex Home a few years ago, it was incredible picky about how you access files.

I'm using an Android box now to connect to my music collection and while I can get into the device through 1 program, I seem to hitting a rouad block using SAMBA Media Player.

It sees the drive ATOMIC2TB.

I'm then presented with
ATOMIC2TB
GoFlex_Home

Challenges me to enter
[domain]username
password

I've enters UNAME and PASSWORD
Ive' entered (verified from windows machine
GoFlex Home Public\UNAME
PASSWORD

...and every combination I could imagine ( I guess expect the correct one)
And still dont get access the drive.

My understanding is that I'm trying to access the
SERVER at GoFlex_Home
SUBDIR at GoFLex Home Public
and then
SUBDIR NEW MP3 Collection

I have all the right bits but can't seem to get connected.

Through the same SAMBA NETWORK PLAYER I can access my DNS 323, either drive, and effortlessly view files.

I need to have the MP3s on the SEAGATE NAS due to file access\connection dropping issue with the DNS-323. I had bought it to use for MP3s, but it keeps disconnecting when I try moving files to it.

THe GoFLex Drive doesn't do this, so I figured I'd just moved everything there... but the path is killing the idea.

Would love another set of eyes on this.

ok so i hooked this thing upd to my macbook ran the installation now my question is is there anything I still need to do before i can start using this hdd? I still have the software that came on it do I just create a new folder and go use it? Another thing when installing it asked weather i wanted Mac, or mac and pc compatible. I choose mac and pc but apparently that option doesn't allow time machine to work how to i get time machine to work on this. And one last this when i click eject on my mac the drive shuts off, but as soon i i pull the usb cord out it turns back on should i pull the power cord after i eject?

Answer:Free agent Goflex 1TB seagate external hdd

I'm thinking that it has to be formatted as Mac-compatible only, as I don't think Time Machine works on a FAT32 partition (and I don't think Macs read NTFS, unless that's changed in the past few years).

I have a Seagate GoFlex Desk 2TB drive that was on our home network, simply quit being accessible. I have removed it from its outer enclosure and the base after purchasing a cable to connect to my USB port. SeaTools will not recognize the disk drive in order to troubleshoot and below are the screen shots from Disk Management as well as Partion Wizard as found in an earlier thread I tried. Disk Management wants me to intitialize the drive, I have always chosen cancel there in fear of loosing all the data that I need.

Hey Everyone,I am trying to create a system disk image on my external hard drive (Seagate GoFlex Home). I'm currently running Windows 8. I selected the external drive, entered my logon info for the drive, and clicked start. It ran for about 15 seconds before giving me an error (0x80780119) saying the drive didn't have enough free space. I tried rerunning the backup, with the same result. When I open Memeo Dashboard (the software that came with the drive) it shows 1.46 TB free of 1.92. The odd thing is when I right-click the drive (under Network) it shows 0 bytes of 0 bytes free.I have backed up the system onto that drive once before, and it worked fine. Do you think because there is already a System Disc Image on the drive it won't let me create another? Thanks.

I have a Seagate goflex with usb 3.0 that is read only that I am having trouble with and hoping someone has a solution.  I am logged into my computer as administrator (I have tried all these as user and get the password prompt and type it in but the results are the same).  I have several truecrypt volumes on the seagate I am trying to mount but it is mounting as readonly.  I also copied the same container to another drive and is not readonly on that drive (passport); it mounts just fine.  [Was making 2 copies just in case before making a change.]  I can also mount them from C: without a problem.   It is only from the Seagate drive that is read only.  I have checked the properties and read-only is not checked.  I checked security and full control is checked for admin and user acct.  I can delete non-admin required (e.g. .dat .xls .ico).  That same .xls I cannot change.   I also have some folders/files and I cannot delete those either, I get the warning, click continue and let it run and then the warning comes up again (nothing get deleted).  This does not give me the readonly warning.Thank you in advance for any help!

I bought this on the understanding that it was a device that I could access wirelessly and transfer files into and out of it.

It is a good backup device for my desktop which is wired to it permanantly through my Router and backs up all my work continuously.
I can connect to it wirelessly with my Laptop and download files for viewing only. I cannot edit those files or upload additional ones into this drive. This difficult as I do a lot of entry away from home.
I followed the instructions on the Help File and hardwired the Laptop to my router with the result it totally wiped all my Desktop Data and replaced it with that from the Laptop. Has anyone had experience of this system and can they help me?

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 2.0, 500GB portable hard drive
which suddenly stopped working while I was using it. The power's on and it's
recognised in the USB slot (the light on the drive is illuminated) but it
isn't recognised as a drive in Windows Explorer. (am using
Windows 7). It shows up in Device Manager but not in Disk Management.
Any help on how I can try to retrieve the documents and photographs
stored on this device?

Answer:Seagate GoFlex Portable Hard Drive Failure

Open Win 7's 'Control Panel' click the icon for 'Devices and Printers'. See if it's showing in there. I had a problem a few weeks back, when Win 7's 'My Computer' wasn't showing 4 of my external hard drives. But were seen in 'Device Manager' and in 'Devices and Printers'. I had to give them new letters.

A lifetime of data on it.

Found other posters here with the problem which led me to post. It was working fine and due to whatever it now doesn't show up in explorer.

It's a USB3. I tried on multiple computers and USB 1 and 2, running Win 8 and Win 7.

Shows up in device manager and shows up as usb. I can't get it to view in partition wizard or any other recovery program like testdisk that tries to view it.

I currently have it out of the case and attached internally. I had to add it with computer running since I can't access any jumper settings and computer won't boot with it installed.

BUT it shows up in disk management. Images attached.

Can I initialize but not format, will that help it show up in Partwizard so I can get at the data somehow to save?

For the love of God HELP please...

Kevin

Answer:Ext Seagate Goflex 1TB not initialized, can't view in partition wizard

Update - I just plugged it back into usb, I now don't even see it in disk management.

Hello,

I have the above USB 2.0 external HDD* with important data that I'd like to access on my Win7 machine. It isn't assigned a drive letter in Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management, and the only available options on the context menu are 'Delete Volume...' and 'Help'. I also can't seem to see it under Diskpart via admin command prompt.

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

Answer:Seagate Replica (2T External Harddrive) GoFlex Desk

Why bother using third-party disk-imaging (especially from Seagate) when Windows 7 has it built-in?
The built-in one works well, I've used it.

Sorry no experience. Hopefully, some permissions need setting. A quick read thru' this search mentions something about data being wiped on a new setup.
Have you had a look/posted in Seagate forums?
Bit quiet here just now. Maybe someone will jump in.
Are you using XP/Vista/7/Mac?
Until you solve it, I suppose Dropbox/Google Docs or USB Flash sticks could be used for your work. Maybe you were doing that before buying the Golfex anyway.

I recently upgraded from Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional. The problem I am having is that my Seagate Freeagent 1TB drive wont load in Windows 7. I have to keep going to Device Manager and Uninstalling the driver and then plugging it back in so it automatically installs itself and then when I shut down the computer I have to do the process again.

I thought things that worked with Windows Vista were supposed to work with Windows 7.

Any solutions or help on this problem would be appreciated. PS I have already tried insalling newer drivers, I have the latest ones, and I know this is a software issue as I am able to access the drive as normal after re-installing it each time.

So any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Seagate Freeagent 1TB

First, welcome to the SevenForums

I assuming (since your specs are limited) that this HDD is a USB device. If so, I know of several people with the same problem. There is at this time no fix is available other then to turn it off prior to starting your computer then turning it back on once your system is up and running. Not sure why this happens only that it does, and there are several other HDDs that do the same thing. Some of Western Digital's HDD Books USB HDDs do the same thing. Not sure if it is Microsoft's fault or a driver problem yet unsolved by the HDD manufactures—your guess is as good as. . .

Question: Seagate FreeAgent

Lost the ability to load FreeAgent after it was unplugged from usb before it was "Removed"... Won't start up. light wont turn on. Computer wont even recognize that its there...it's not much but all that i hold dear is on that external hard drive... have i lost it all... and al i even in the right place for this??? new at this... thank u

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent

If the light won't turn on and you are sure you have all power connections secure, then either the power supply or the enclosure is bad, or possibly the disk inside the enclosure. If you have a volt meter, you may be able to test the enclosure's power supply.

WARNING: Performing the instructions below may void your warranty.

I recommend you remove the drive from its enclosure and connect it internally as a secondary drive to a desktop computer. See if it works there. If it does, your data recovery problem is solved. If not, then you may have a failed hard disk.

Question: seagate freeagent

I have a seagate freeagent and I was trying to upload a video to youtube. It froze so I shut down the internet site. Now my freeagent will not open. My computer sees it but when I try to open it, it says that another program is using it and to close any programs down. I have tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. I have unplugged it and plugged it back in.....still the same error. I have my whole life in pictures on the drive......I cannot loose any of them.

Any help would be appreciated

Answer:seagate freeagent

I have my whole life in pictures on the drive......I cannot loose any of them.Click to expand...

There are two kinds of storage devices: those that have already failed and those that will. Data you have only one copy of is data you intend to not keep.

Try the device on another computer. If it works there, you're saved.

If not, your next step is to determine whether it is the enclosure that has failed or the hard disk inside.

WARNING: Performing the next operation will void your warranty.

Remove the disk from the enclosure and connect it internally to a desktop computer. If it works there you have determined the enclosure failed. If not, we have further work to do.

I purchased 2 of these so-called external backup systems. Both of them continued to create mirror images until they filled up the entire drive (500 gb) and then gave an error that there was no more space on the drive. There doesn't seem to be anyway to control these drives at all. I would welcome any advice I can get. Thanks.

So ever since mast night, ive. Ive been trying to back up my files to my 1tb hardrive, but at certain points it would fail and not give an error code/message. Then when I deleted the stuff that was able to be backed up on it, the capacity amount did not increase, as if I didn't delete the files at all! Help?

Answer:backup failing with a unknown error?? Seagate GoFlex 1TB Hardrive

I'm not an expert at anything so these are just some random thoughts off the top of my head.

- Since you're using a netbook, are you plugged into ac or trying to backup on battery power alone?
- Have you tried a different USB port?
- With the GoFlex plugged in is it recognized in Disk Management?
- Does it have one large partition of about 931GB or does it have more than one partition?
- If more than one partition could you post screenshot of your maximized Disk Management?

Basically i have them plugged in. yet you have to hold the touch power button to get the drive to power up and light to go on, then the system see's it and i can open it and add files. Also the same applies to turn these drives off, push and hold, the light will turn off, and it will disconnect from the computer and I thought they were off. Here's my problem. both have been on this entire time. (over a year). today i felt one and it was decently warm and spinning. it spun all day even tho the power light was off. and the second drive is doing it as well.. so why do they always run?? i had to unplug the drives to get them to stop spinning and to turn off and cool down.

So what is the deal here.. is this just how they work. i dont want my ext always running.

Any help would be great.. Thanks!

Hi, I have a problem with my new FreeAgent Desktop 250GB drive . The device manager starts fine but it won't save any of my backup plans or let me use the manager for a manual backup. I click on Backup Now in the system tray (since the manager doesn't even have the manual backup button) but it just asks me to set what I want to back up (which it doesn't save) then returns me to the drives screen. I checked the backup log and it said that a backup was done but it says zero files where actually backed up. HELP!!Cheers

I currently have a Seagate FreeAgent USB external drive set up and running on my desktop. I also have a Maxtor 320GB USB external drive connected. I travel with the Maxtor and store my images on this drive. I'm a photographer. Once home I ask the Seagate to update its database to reflect what's on Maxtor. I've bought another Seagate to replace my Maxtor.

A. I don't like having the Maxtor constantly running even when the cpu is off.
B. It's only a 320GB drive and will reach capacity before the Seagate.

Question(s):

1. What's the best way to transfer the data from the Maxtor to the new Seagate2 drive?

2. What features in the Seagate2 drive will I select during installation so that it won't compete with Seagate1 during backups?

3. How will I upload new images from my traveling Maxtor after a photo shoot?

Answer:How to set up 2nd Seagate FreeAgent 500GB

1. You can transfer files from one external drive to another by hooking them both up and then literally dragging and dropping the files from one drive, to the other drive. For example, if you have Maxtor set to C: and the Seagate to D: 'copy' the files from C:/Photography Files and then 'paste' in d:/Photography Files. Change that folder name to whichever you have.

2. Not sure

3. Do as above, but in reverse order (and destined to your desktop, or whichever computer it is you want) - be sure not to copy over an existing folder.

Ok everybody get your laughs out first. I clumsy and I knocked a cup of water over on to my floor yesterday no big deal right? Wrong my 500 GB external hard drive was sitting right next to where the water fell on the floor. And of course decided to go into the usb and power parts of the drive. I am not sure if it got into the actual drive but now my laptop will not recognize it. I keep getting it to turn on and then my laptop says its malfunctioned and I need to replace it but that means losing alot of data. Anyone have any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Answer:Seagate Freeagent Pro problems

If water got into the connections you need to unplug it and leave it unplugged untill the water is dried out. That doesnt mean that you dry it off with a towel or something like that. You will need to leave it dry for a while to ensure that the water you cant reach hs evaperated and dried before powering it back on. Steeing it infront of a small desk fan at room temperature may speed it up a bit. Remember water and energized electronics do not mix. Hopefully the drying out will correct your problem.

If your files are backed up on a external then it should just work like an memory stick...

If when you plug the external in and it pops up as recognised and there's no files there well then I guess you either didn't back up corrctlyor they have somehow been deleted

Hey guys,

I bought an external hard drive to store all my movies, TV shows, etc..

However when I try to put something on this hard drive it COPIES the files instead of MOVING them. This takes a lot longer than it should because I'm not wanting to copy, I just want to move it over. I've tried deleting all the software files in the drive that may run the program but that doesn't help.

Any suggestions?

Hi all

I have recently purchased a 2nd hand 750Gb External Hard drive.

I scanned it and rand file restore software to make sure it was totally clean. Then I formatted it too (you cant be too safe). Anyway, it worked long enough for me to put all of my family photos on and music, films work and other photos.

However now it has stopped working. When I plug it in it crashes the computer, and it does the same to the boot up whenever I plug it in. I have tried to use the safe remove hardware, and this is where it gets confusing.

The computer is recognising it in Device manager and the safe removal, but it wont let me safe remove (crashes) and it also wont let me populate the volume to see if that works (crashes again). Sending it off to be fixed isn't an option (my girlfriend would kill me......the photos you see......).

Is there anything I can try, I'm rapidly loosing hair at pulling it out.

Cheers Guys

This forum is great

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Go 320gb external hard drive. I used to transfer pictures from my camera (then i would burn them to disk). After transferring files (from a wedding), I put away the drive. I plugged it in my desktop a couple days later to access them and make the disk and the drive faintly beeped a few times and the lcd lights flashed. It spinned up normally but my desktop computer stopped detecting it. I unplugged it and re-plugged it and it would start the "spin up" but didn't get to a normal spin sound, then the lights continued to blink, no more beeping sounds and it's not being detected. It was then suggested that it could be a dead physical drive, among other things. I took it to a repair place and they recommended freezing it to see if I could access it one more time to get data, but that didn't happen, they just suggested data recovery. From there i plugged it in one more time and it didn't even attempt to spin up or blink. It has been plugged into 4 different computers and the results are all the same, so it isn't my computer. I have another identical seagate ext. HD and I used it's power/usb cord just to make sure it wasn't the problem. I left it alone for about 3 weeks and plugged it back in by the tiny chance the technology fairies fixed it and it did spin up and the lights blinked. Hi, I bought one of these drives a few months back, had problems originally with 'delayed write failure' in XP, but managed to correct that by changing the USB cable.I'm now running Vista instead of XP and that's made no difference, its been fine, but over the last few weeks the drive hasn't been spinning down when the PC shuts down (usually takes about 20 seconds once the PC turns off), but instead keeps spun up with the strip on the front 'glowing' quickly. Its also started doing this while I've been using Windows, and vanishes from the available drives. The only way to resolve this seems to be to shut the PC down, unplug the drive from the PC and mains for 30 seconds, plug the drive back in and then turn the PC on again. This was ok once every other week, but now its happening daily - is this a Vista problem or a faulty drive?

Answer:Seagate Freeagent 500GB USB 2 Problem

Sounds like a probable faulty drive I think. If you have anything on there that you don't want to lose, better do a backup of it just in case - even if I am wrong about the drive.

any other suggestions

it's suppose to be about 80% full
also not recognized on TestDisk

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent 1TB now RAW files ystem

This is usually a file system problem. All of your files are still there, but the file system has lost track of them.

You can use a program like the free Partition Wizard which has a function to rebuild the MBR. This is assuming the disk is a MBR disk and not a GPT system - do you know?

I also recommend trying to recover the files using a program like the free Recuva before starting anything. There is always a chance of something destructive happening unintentionally when playing with the file system.

The first thing I would try is to change the drive letter (in Disk Management) to G: . A: and B: are reserved for legacy floppy disk drives. That is a pretty safe procedure.

i have windows 7-64bit OS, HP P6604Y, 6gb Ram, 1 Tb harddisk. I purchased seagate freeagent go 500GB HDD. all my data was stored in it, recently it was not getting detected, even if it gets detected it takes a lot of time and the whole system gets slowed down, any other operation also cannot be done when the harddrive is connected to the system it freezes the whole system:
Many posts say to go to Computer and right click, an option called Manage, select that. Then among the choices, click on Disk Management. Once here, the hard drive does show, but no option to open exists with most people: (small window) I was traying to stop seagate of runing on services.
I did try the Seagate external drive troubleshooters:
SEATOOL:

SEAGATE MANAGER:

SOMETIMES I get this message when i try to open the "Freeagent go":

And when I try to CLOSE IT I get this one:

Have you fix this problem with your Seagate Freeagent go?
What can you tell?

I have a 640gb Seagate Freeagent Go that cannot be formatted as normal which they called the full format, it was 6-7 hours after an error message pop up, says that the disk format cannot be completed. But when i tried to quick format, it was formatted successfully. I want to full format the disk because there are several bad sectors detected on the disk. As what I've read that: "Full format will truly scrub through the hard drive from scratch, rebuild all of its file structures, and scans the drive to make sure that everything is on a satisfactory level. On the other hand, what a Quick format does is lay down a blank FAT and directory table without checking for bad sectors." Can someone please help me? Thanks a lot.

Answer:640gb Seagate Freeagent Go can't be formatted

If you have "several" bad sectors you should not depend on that drive any longer. The condition will just continue to get worse. Before you were even aware of any bad sectors the drive had already substituted sectors from a pool of spare sectors. So you have more than you thought. While I have your attention, if you are using that external to save important files be sure to keep at least TWO copies of any data you need. Save them to different media. All data is subject to loss, corruption, theft, fire, etc.Have you run Seatools on the drive? If not, I suggest you do. Get it at the link below.http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...

Hi Everyone,

I have just found a solution to the problem I was having and thought I would share it in case it helps anyone else.

I bought a Seagate Freeagent Desk 1TB about a year ago and it has worked fine until recently. Now when I plug it in it takes about 3 or 4 minutes for it to register on the computer, and autoplay pops up. When I started copying things to or from the drive, it worked for about 1 minute and then froze. Canceling the operation caused a crash on the system and when it had recovered, the drive was no longer accessible. I ran checkdisk which failed after a minute and the same problem - mini crash and drive no longer accessible. When I unplug the drive and plug back in, the drive is recognised once again. In short, anything you do works for 1 minute and then fails.

Eventually, i decided to open it up and remove the actual hard drive from the casing. I connected it to a desktop pc, and it simply would not boot up with the drive in. I had to disable smart check first and then cancel checkdisk when it started. Once I got booted into windows, the drive was visible but would disappear after a minute of activity. I tried recovery software which also failed after 1 minute. Finally, I have just succeeded copying everything off it by removing the hard drive from its casing along with circuitry which plugs into the back of the actual HD, acting as a usb port converter. I put the hard drive on a laptop cooling tray whilst making sure none of the circuitry came int... Read more

My existing Seagate Freeagent External hard drive is not big enough to store backups for both of my computers so I need another one. The old one (230Gb) was called a Freeagent Desktop USB unit and is now, discontinued. I may as well get a 1TB unit but does the replacement model, the GoFlex, work in exactly the same way? (I use Vista)

Answer:which seagate freeagent hard drive

Yes it is plug and play, so should be no problem with Vista.
Make sure you get the USB3 version, even if you do not have USB3 on your computers, as it will future proof it and is 10 times faster than the USB2 drive

I have a Seagate FreeAgent 1tb external hd that is no longer working properly. When I plug it in to my comp, it takes forever to be recognized, luckily it's being recognized at all, I guess. Unfortunately, it's being recognized as "Local Disk: (G)" as opposed to FreeAgent. When I click on it to look at the files, the bar at the top seems as though it's reading and progressing, but when it gets close to the end, it stops. Sometimes it says "not responding." Yet other times I get some sort of I/O error. Other times still it says that I need to format the hd.

I really, really need to be able to access these files as they contain home videos and pictures of my little ones that I do not have anywhere else. =/ Yes, completely my bad because I hadn't backed them up anywhere.

I tried the Seatools diagnostic long generic test, and it failed. I also tried r-studio and I got as far as the scan. The screen says that there are read errors at position 0, 512, 1024, etc. Every one of them in multiples of 512. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (1117).

Any suggestions, please?

Also, I took it out of the case and plugged it into a desktop sata connection; but when I go to boot it up and the computer is running through its normal bootup process (when it's doing the DOS-looking stuff before it gets to the Windows processing then follow-up login screen), it recognizes the other hd but stops at the Seagate as... Answer:Seagate FreeAgent 1tb external hd issues

Since the drive failed the Seagate test, it doesn't look good for getting to your files through windows.
Linux is sometimes successful at getting things that windows can't.

You need to download a linux live CD and burn the ISO. (If you don't understand, post again and someone will guide you).
You'll boot your computer with the live CD - it will not change anything in your windows, then attach the Seagate drive. Depending on the live distro, it might be seen automatically. You will need some other hard drive or a large USB stick to copy the files you want over to another device.

I am troubleshooting my Seagate Freeagent Desk HDD external hard drive. It stopped working under windows 10. I cannot read or write files to it, and it is not in my computer as a drive letter or a volume anymore. I would like to run scandisk or chkdsk as a first step, but cannot locate the drive. Are there any suggestions to get the drive to work under windows 10?

Hi, I just installed a Seagate FreeAgent Go external harddrive. While going through the installation guide, the computer froze and shut off. Now everytime I boot the computer, it shuts off during boot or maybe within 5 minutes of start up. This is not my computer, the girl who owns it says it has never randomly shut off before so I'm wondering if the Seagate drivers have caused the laptop to start shutting off. It does the same thing in safe mode. Any help will be appreciated.

Answer:Computer shuts off after boot (Seagate FreeAgent Go)

Hi,

If you have the Seagate external hard-drive plugged in onto the laptop computer then take it off. Reseat both the memory and the hard-drive of the computer. Also try taking out the laptop battery and boot the computer via with only the AC Adapter plugged in. Hope this fixes your issues.

Hey all,

Just wondering if an external drive is dead based on this --

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desk and last week when I plugged into computer after 6 months or so of no use, it wasn't recognized. LED lights didn't come on at all. So I thought it was a bad power supply. Switched that out but no luck. Tonight I transferred to a Dynex enclosure. Powers up but still nowhere on computer, not in device manager or disk management. Any other things to try or is the drive itself gone?

Answer:Opinion on whether Seagate FreeAgent External Dead

Sounds like the hdd isn't spinning up in either enclosure. if possible I would connect it to the enclosure & not completely reassemble, try it on your PC, and put your ear down on the top of the drive & listen, do you hear the motor spinning up?! if the drive is not spinning up, there isn't much you can do. if the data is valuable, then try a data recovery company - I have had excellent success with http://www.300dollardatarecovery.com/ if the data is not valuable then I'd replace the drive and toss that one out.

Post back, Hope this helps!

I have a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent Go Hard Drive which suddenly stopped working. What happened was, I was shrinking one of the volumes because I want to make three partitions. As I was formatting the unallocated volume, the hard disk was accidentally remove from the laptop. Then when I plugged in again, the laptop cannot detect the drives which I originally have. I already uninstalled the device through Device Manager, restart the laptop and reinstalled the device driver but still it won't detect my hard disk.

Help, please?

Yeah, I know "connection issues" is very broad, but give me time an I'll explain to the best of my abilities what's going on.

Right, so as the title states, I have a Seagate FreeAgent Pro, an external hard drive. This drive has four(4) different data connections. Esata, 1394a (6-pin), Mini USB (5-pin), and Mini Firewire (4-pin).

My primary use for this drive is storage for video files as I do a lot of work with film. I've heard that the 6-pin Firewire (1394a) connection is the best for use with video, but being that I'm the curious chump, I wanted to see if the Esata connection would work any better or not. The two ports are the only two I've ever used since I first bought the drive, so I'm not too worried about the Mini ports.

Here's my first problem: With the 1394 connection, I can plug in from the PC and the drive starts right up, and given a certain amount of time, it'll show up in Windows.
However, with the Esata connection, I plug in from the PC and the drive will power up, but never show up in windows unless I restart the system, or run drive diagnostics (in which case it only shows up half the time).

Here's my second problem: With the Esata connection, when I'm working in my video editing program and stop to take a break, the drive will shut off. When I try to get it going again, it never shows up and everything in the video editor brings up error codes because the links are all broken. I&#... Read more

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent Pro and eSATA connection issues

SATA, (and Esata), are intended to be hot pluggable devices, (internal and external), as long as they are running in "AHCI", or SATA mode. If the device isn't firing up, (data wise), when you plug it in, then the system drives may be set to IDE emulation mode. In this mode, you would need to power down, then connect the drive, and reboot to have it detected.

In any case, for safety's sake, I suggest you refrain from hot plugging you external drive while it's running in IDE mode.

If this is the case, you would need to install SATA drivers, (Assuming you are running XP), AND reinstall the OS, to get true ACHI at the Esata ports.

With Win 7, you could try switching the drive mode in BIOS, but don't be surprised if that doesn't work.

Windows 7 would indeed supply ACHI drivers without your intervention, but here again, a reinstall of the OS would be necessary.

Data transfer should be as fast in USB as it is in the original Firewire (1) spec, but not as fast as the new Firewire. For history's sake, the original Firewire was released when USB was USB 1.0, hence the speed advantage of Firewire! But, USB 2.0 more or less put an end to that. As you probably already know, USB is hot pluggable also.

Also, once upon a time certain video programs would only allow direct video capture via Firewire, and not USB.

Hi
I plugged my new FreeAgent Drive into a USB port (on a set of extra USB ports). I got the installation wizard and proceeded. In the middle of installing, a box came up to say (can't go back to quote exactly) "incompatability with Windows 7 drivers". It said that if I continued blah blah blah bad stuff.
I canceled the installation and searched the net to download the driver(s) needed. I can find NOTHING that will give me the right info to get this working. I did run across advice to use a high speed port, so I disconnected the drive from the extra USB port set and plugged it directly into my computer port. Still no go.
Also, when I first plugged the new drive in (to the extra port set), it made the normal little 2-tone "ding ding", like when installing cameras and such. When I unplugged it, same 2-tone "ding, ding" thing. However, no matter what I do to try and fix the problem since, when I plug it in I get: "ding, ding, ding", in same tone (with slight buzz), and in a staccato-like rhythm?
I'm not computer literate beyond word processing and searching/browzing! I've been pretty successful with searching out help and solving problems online, so I know a FEW things. But not enough to go beyond updating, upgrading, downloading . . .
HELP

UGH

I bought a Seagate Freeagent 250g external hard drive about 4 years ago and have not any problems with it since. Recently however, after an especially rough moving trip, my computer no longer recognizes the external drive. The power light on the external drive does not turn on either. Everything else I plug in works, so I know it cannot be the computer. I have tried using different cables, trying it on other people's computers and nothing works. In fact, whenever I plug in the external drive, the entire computer slows down significantly and then gets notically faster when I disconnect the sick external drive. Do these descriptions of the problem sound like anything anyone out there has ever come across? Please forward some info if you can. I would really hate to lose all the sentimental files I have in there. Thank you.

Hello, I have a Seagate FreeAgent Go external drive that I have used frequently in the past to backup and store data. My laptop (Win7) is not recognizing it when I plug it in now. I have been through Disk Management and Device Management, but haven't figured out what's wrong yet. The computer does make a small sound both when I plug in the USB cable and when I remove it, but I cannot find any access to the drive. I may have removed some files that the Seagate drive came with inadvertently when removing some data. I've been to Seagate's support site, and was able to install the "Seagate Manager", which also now does not recognize that a Seagate drive is plugged in. Any ideas on how to get this drive to come up?

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent Go external drive not recognized

Did you fully check in the bottom-right panel of Disk Management to see if a ribbon for the external drive is shown there ? (it will have no letter and no model name and may also be labelled as "Raw").

Check again and if it's there, right-click it and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths".
Then click "New", choose a letter and click 'OK'.

I seem to have experienced a bad installation of Seagate's FreeAgent Tools. When I try to re-install, I get the "Modify, repair or remove the program" dialog, and clicking on anything gives me the Feature transfer error "Error: - 1605 This action is only valid for products that are currently installed". The program does not appear in the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, nor does it appear in WinXP Manager's Smart Uninstaller list. I wrote to Seagate, but they say that "the issue is related to Windows Installer", and that I should contact Microsoft. So, of course, I came here first! I'm running XP SP2 on an HP dv9500t, with an external Seagate FreeAgent Pro (which is where the program in question originates). Thanks!

HELP!!!! I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop External 250GB USB Drive. All was working wonderfully and then after I upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2 I can no longer access my drive. I can see it in the tab to safely remove the hardware. I can see it in the device manager under hard drive, and it tells me it is working fine. When I go out to disk management, it shows the drive as Disk 5 and online, but all of the space is unallocated. I have data on the drive and I am not sure if the upgrade to SP SVC PK 2 caused the error. I found that there might be a hotfix, but I can not seem to find the right one. I am thinking it is KB885464. I can not find the hotfix to save my life and I am at a loss as to how to access my drive. I am mandated to have Svc Pack 2 loaded due to the fact it is a gov't machine. Please help.

Perhaps a silly question???

I purchased and received the above external hard drive but can't find a button on the device to turn it off and on. I looked everywhere on the drive where it could be, searched on Seagate's support forum to find answers but couldn't find any info about it either. Perhaps there is NO power button on this drive? :eek

I want to turn it off when not in use and don't like to unplug the cables if not needed.

Hopefully, one of you will know and tell me about it? Thank you!

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent Desktop External HD 500 GB USB2

I have that exact drive hooked up to my xbox 360 as a media drive. If you can't find a power switch that is because it doesn't have on. It auto powers down. That is why you may have noticed slight lag when first accessing it after periods of inactivity. If the light bar is on the drive is powered up, if it is pulsing it is actively reading/writing, and it is off you either have the unit unplugged or it has shut its self off to save power. Hope this helps.

Hello,

I am using FreeAgent Go 5oo GB , when I try safely remove FreeAgent Go always show the error massage " Seagate FreeAgent Go USB device can not be uninstalled right now because the system request system restart " and I have to restart every time.

I have already tried the following :

1. Close all application and end recent file process.
2. Check " don't remove file to the recycle bin, remove file immediately when delete" in the recycle bin.
3. Disable write caching on the device in devive property "policy" tab.
4. Using third party sync.exe to flushes disk buffers together with HotSwap!.exe yet still shown the same error massage.

What would be the cause of the error massage ? Also please suggest the appropriate way to safely remove the device and I would appreciate all advise.

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent request system restart

How exactly are you trying to Eject this drive? I've seen a "cannot be STOPPED right now" but never a "cannot be UNINSTALLED right now"?
