external drive showing as invalid dynamic drive after Win8 upgrade

Question: external drive showing as invalid dynamic drive after Win8 upgrade

HelloI have recently upgraded from vista 32bit to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. All my important data was stored on Icybox External Drive enclosure in RAID mode (fully working before the upgrade).

Since the upgrade it is not showing up under "My computer", and then I go to disk management it is showing as an invalid Dynamic drive. I spent about 18 hours in various forums searching for solution, tried everything suggested, nothing worked.
I need the data that is on the ICYBOX and cannot convert it to basic disk until I get the data off.
The commercial software recommended did not work either.
Loosing my will to live!Anyone has any suggestions please?
Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES

Answer:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

Hi all, I purchased a external drive to back up files on our desktop and laptops. I am looking for easy way to do this, do I do all files or do I have to go into all of them one at a time. I say this because one laptop is my daughters, can I just send all her pic and music files all at once. Our main computer(desktop)is windows vista, everyday it's getting louder and louder and each morning its shows a message says configuring and it's like counting down. This takes long time. I looked at the space left. It shows space available on (c) and on d it's full which is recovery so I don't have a clue how files got on there. My hubby doesn't know much about even getting on computer, but when he does it seems something goes wrong. I want to clean up and get rid of files so my son who's 11 can use it for games. It's so slow and I don't want to delete wrong things.  From reading here and just knowing not to delete recovery. How do I clear out space on D...I tried opening some files on it but they all seem to do with the windows system. What can I do with my desktop ?And is it possible to clear out all files from laptop...it is about 5 yrs old...and she has alot of music and pics on there..just wondering if it's worth time to clean out the files. It takes forever to get online and when we do its so slow. Hope I'm not sounding to confusing.any suggestionstygreat site so far

Answer:need help with using external hard drive also my recovery drive(d)showing full?

Welcome!Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help. The forum will help everyone with all computer questions. You have presented more that one issue. The forum will help you, but some detail is needed. What OS are you using?  What make and model of eternal drive do you use?The proper way to remove programs is in the con control  panel. But Music and pictures files can be copied to a CD-R or DVD-R and removed from the computer. The external drive can also be used to transport files from on PC to another. But using DVD-R or CD-R is preferable. The best use of an external drive is to make a backup of the operating system and programs.Avoid putting files on the recovery partition.

i'm using windows 7, my external hard drive shows up in my devices and printers section but it won't show up as a drive, so i can't view any files in that external hard drive. if i put a memory card in, it shows up as a drive and a flag shows up for when i want to unplug that drive and it asks if i want to remove my external hard drive too.

normally when i turn on the external hard drive it autoplays but it doesn't do that anymore.

i don't understand why it shows up in my devices and printers but not as a drive when i open windows explorer.

i've looked into the external hard drives properties and it all says that the device is working properly.

Answer:problem with external hard drive not showing as a drive in windows 7

Go into Control Panel (classic view) ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Management.

In bottom-right pane, if you see a horizontal band representing a drive with no drive-letter assigned to it, that's the cause of your problem. You need to give it a drive-letter:

Right-click that horizontal band and choose "Change drive letter and paths".

Hard drive is: WD My Book Essential 2 TB

It was working fine the other day then I updated my computer. I looked and noticed there was an update titled: Western Digital Technologies - Other hardware - WD SES Device, released April, 2015. I don't know if it's the same as the external or what.

I did try uninstalling this but could not find it in the installed updates. I installed it 6/7/15 and before this it worked fine, now when plugged in, it shows up as CD Drive and when I double click it, it says application not found.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Answer:My data drive not in Disk Management, listed as an Invalid Dynamic disk in DISKPART?

If you are OK with data loss on disk 0 you can do the following,

diskpart> sel dis 0
diskpart> clean
diskpart> conv dyn

This would reactivate your disk.
Invalid occurs due to many reasons like on spanned volume,
suppose few sectors have gone bad. So you are going to lose that data and as such disk becomes invalid.

I read that with "Paragon ExtFS for Windows" I could use Ext 2/3/4 in my Windows 8 environment.

Would there be any speed benefit with this?

I read in many places that Ext4 is a superior file system, but would it be good in this case?

Answer:Ext4 on a Win8 external drive?

You can get read/write access to your Linux partitions from within windows using that program.

No idea what you mean by a speed boost.

You can't run windows on those filesystems.

I'm unable to 'Safely remove' or 'Eject' external USB 3.0 drives (I have 2) on my Lenovo Thinkpad running Wndows 8.1 without having the computer claim that the drive needs to be scanned for errors when the drive is reconnected to the same laptop or attached to my desktop PC's.

When I connect the same drives to my desktop PC's USB3 ports I initially get the same "scan for errors" prompt. But any further attaching and removal of the same drives to either my Windows 7(64) and Vista (64) dsktop PCs's does not reproduce the same error and further safe removal and reconnecting to those 2 systems is error free.

When scanned for errors there has never been any errors discovered. The 2.5" drives (one Seagate the other WD) are in Vantec USB 3.0 external enclosures that use a '2x USB plugs' cable; one for data and one for power. My usual removal method is to click on the 'Windows Explorer Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' icon on the Taskbar and select Eject for the drive and then wait until the 'Safe to remove' message pops up before removing the single cable attached to the external enclosure.

The USB Controllers are:

I tried on Windows 7, everything is ok.

Answer:How can I copy files to External Hard Drive? (MS-DOS Invalid Function)

It may be a bug if it works in 7 and not in 8. Does this error crop up with any file or only with this particular file? If its very file, then its a problem with the external. If it isnt, then its a problem with the particular file. Backup the data on the external, then run chkdsk on it.

Hi all, I'm new to the forums, but I need help.

So I'm sure you have to answer questions like this all the time, but I looked through several different threads and none of the solutions given worked for me. I have a 500gb WD MyPassport external USB drive. It used to work fine on this exact computer/OS but all of a sudden the computer stopped acknowledging it. I had installed several games onto it, as well as put a few other files on. Right before the computer stopped the acknowledgement, every time I would open computer and go to my G:\ drive, it would run slowly for a minute then the panel would stop responding. Now the computer just won't see it at all. I've looked through disk management and it's not even showing up as an unregistered device or anything. I used the command to show any hidden devices, but that didn't help either. I'm out of ideas. If anyone could shed light on this, it would be great.

Btw, I'm using a Windows 7 Ultimate 64x. Also (some of you are gonna yell at me for this) I'm running it as a partition on my Macbook. I don't think that has anything to do with it (because my Lion OS still recognizes the device fine), but maybe it does. Thanks in advance

Have you tried plugging the WD into a different USB port?

You could also try running the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic test on the external.

I have a Buffalo 500G external drive that has worked great for about 6 years. As of the other day, when I plug it into USB, I hear the usual sound from Windows, but I don't see the disk in My Computer. I can hear the disk running, also.
In Disk Management, I saw the disk, but no drive letter and it also showed 100% Free Space, which is incorrect.

My other Buffalo External drive IS showing up normally, so it doesn't seem to be a Windows issue, but I'm wondering if there are any utility programs or something to try to gain access to this disk? Or any suggestions.

At this point, I'm wondering if I will have to do a recovery. Some of my data is backed up and some is not.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Answer:External Drive Not showing up

Hi there,

It's possible that the hard drive is working fine but the external enclosure that houses the hard drive has gone bad. If you're comfortable in dissecting the drive, you can take out the hard drive and connect it to your computer via USB HDD adapter.

One thing, try connecting your Buffalo external drive to another USB port and see if it works on another port. Hope everything works out well for you.

Hi,
Hope someone can help me. I've been using a WD passport usb drive for the last 8 months or so without any problems. Recently it started acting funny and my laptop was treating the drive as if it was the first time i'd plugged it in. Now it's gone weird.
The laptop registers it as a new hardware and installs and then tells me it is ready to use but when i look in "My Computer" its not there.
I checked on disk management and its not there either.
checked on device manager and it shows as a usb mass storage device installed and working correctly but it doesn;t hold any other detail of the device (ie capacity etc).
The device itself seems to be working fine, no unusual noises or vibrations.
Ichecked it on another computer and exactly the same thing happens.
I tried it with a different cables as well
someone suggested it might be virus
Can anyone help please?

I am experiencing the same problem as listed in other posts on this topic, but with a twist that is keeping me from resolving the problem.

I have a 160gb WD USB external drive of my brother's that I'm trying to save for him, and we're experiencing all of the same symptoms as the other posts on this topic. The drive is automatically recognized when plugged in, drivers auto install, windows correctly identifies the drive and gives full drive name, device manager says it is there and operating properly etc etc, but the drive is not listed in windows explorer as others report. When I try to change the drive letter in disk management as the many other posts suggest, changing the name is not an option for this drive. My only options for the afflicted drive are "New simple volume", "New spanned volume" and "New striped volume" and of course properties.

Here are a list of fixes I have tried without success.

1. Tried different USB ports and different USB cable.
2. Tried 4 different machines running Vista Ultimate SP1 (Desktop Core i7 6gb RAM), Vista Basic (Desktop Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM), Vista Home Premium SP1 (Laptop Core 2 Duo 2gb RAM) and XP Home SP3 (Laptop Celeron 512gb RAM)
3. Stopped device with "safely remove hardware", uninstalled through device manager, rebooted with device connected.
4. Renamed hard drives and optical drives to x-z to make D-G available to afflicted drive.
5. Repeated all steps with hard drives and optical drives as... Read more

If they are in Disk Management, do they have a drive letter assigned?
If they show in Device Manager, any warnings/errors (yellow exclamation or similar)?

I assume it is a USB device, correct?

I used a docking station today to format a new drive and was going to copy my digital photos HDD to it but nothing is showing up in Computer but my OS, the optical drive and my digital photos drive. I had assigned the USB connected drive as letter (R) but it's not showing anywhere. Am I overlooking it?

I've got it now. I went into Disk Management and right clicked on that drive and changed the drive letter. It now appears and I've made the transition of copying the photos from (F) drive to the new (S) drive. There was about 76G of photos on that drive so it may take a while.

My entire life is on my external hard drive - it's supposed to be my back up. Now I have an issue with that.

I'm running XP with all updated security profiles and the latest SP. I have an external hard drive that has been working fine on this box, but recently, the computer isn't recognizing it. It gives me the whole "driver not found" scenario. But it can't find the driver anywhere on the net, my computer, or anywhere else.

It's a Western Digital hard drive, and I think it's called a Passport drive. Apparently, talking to my dad, they're ****ty little drives. Which sucks. All my music, pictures, and writing (freelance and published fiction writer) was on this drive cause I was going from one box to another.

Help! Please tell me that my data is at least salvageable!!!

I usually use the hard drive with the desktop, however the other day I plugged it into the laptop, it was running at the time, and was accidentally unplugged, since then it doesn't seem to be recognized in either computer. The laptop will make the noise when I plug in the external drive, and it shows up in device and printers. It does not show up in computer management though. I have tried the chkdsk, but it wont work, I am pretty sure I have the right letter, but says no volume. Please help.

Just an add on, the hard drive does light up, but does not spin. I did try installing it in the desktop, but it was not recognized when I tried that.

After awhile of being plugged in the hard drive shows up in disk managment, however when I try to Initialize it, it says I/O Error

Answer:External Hard Drive not showing up.

Hello jimithing33 ,

Getting an I/o error usually isn't a good sign as often it's related to failed hardware. I guess you already tried using different USB port and cable. What model is this HDD? Is it power fed through the USB cable? You could run the manufacturer’s diagnostics tool to see if it will detect it.

Hi,
I've connected an external Samsung USB hard drive (not a stick) to my fully updated Win 10 PC and it doesn't show up in File manager.
I've gone into Device manager and it shows it as:
'Samsung M3 Portable SCSI Disk Device'
but it's not a SCSI drive.
I tried updating the driver but Windows says it's using the best driver already. This looks like a Windows issue, so what else can I do to force it to recognise the drive?
Thanks.

You can try uninstalling it in Device Manager and see if it will recognise it correctly the next time. You could also try it in another port (after uninstalling it). If you have a choice, try in a usb2 port.

I tried inserting the disk that came with the hard drive, unplugging the drive from the computer and replugging it neither has worked. I was not using the computer when I lost power. I'm running windows 2000 pro, and Que M3 external drive. Any ideas on what else I can do? Thanks, Danu

So, about 2-3 weeks ago I had been hooking my external hard drive up to a notebook because I was in the process of moving my desktop. Around the time that I was preparing to leave the house, the drive no longer would show up on the computer anywhere. I checked My Computer, and shortcuts that were for the drive said they couldn't find the file to open. Now, no computer will acknowledge that it is plugged in. I am using a Buffalo Ministation. The USB cord works just fine because my phone connects to the computer with no problem.

The only change that happened while I was there was that I added a name-tag thing to the top of it (the one you print out of the hand-held machine). I dunno if that is magnetic or not, but I have since removed it. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm having quite a problem here. My external hard drive (Astone - 2Tb) isn't showing up on my computer - or anybody else's. I lent it to a friend, and I believe he may have been rough with it (The base is missing 2 screws), and after receiving it back the following day, I plugged it into my laptop. It came up with "Installing device driver software" which is odd, since I've used it on there many times before. Afterward, it would flash in My Computer for a second coloured grey, then disappear. It does not appear in Safety Removal Hardware either. I've tried this on several computers, but with no difference, and the blue light still works. The problem is definitely with the Hard Drive, since thumbdrives still work fine. Reformatting isn't an option, because there are important, irreplaceable files on there. It does, however, show up in control panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. I still can't access it though - When I right-click and go to browse files "Removable Disk (D: )" is written in grey. Is there anything you tech geniuses can do to help? I'm really getting desperate here...

Just the other day I went to use the external 200gb drive and it was not there. I checked Disk Managment and it shows up as (Disk 1) Basic 189.90GB online BUT no letter for the drive. It says it is "Unallocated". I tryed it on 2 other machines and same thing. How can I get to the data on this disk?

Answer:External USB HD not showing up with a drive letter?

Only things you can try are jumpering the drive a slave to a master hard drive on a pc and see if you can read the data. Beyond that, time to try data recovery software.

Hi,
I have a 1.5 TB Western Digital External harddrive that i purchased couple of months ago, still under warranty. Last night whilst browsing my files in the external it frooze so i did a restart. I noticed that it made a funny noise (not really grinding but not sure how to describe it) it powered on (blue light turned on) but then the hard drive didn't show up in windows explorer and windows 7 re-installed the driver software. I let it install still nothing, so i went to disk management and turns out that it's not intialised! so i went intialise then it went do you want to partition by MBR or GPT, i did MBR, i got an error saying incorrect function. I went into device manager and surely the WD was there. I plugged it in my PC and same issue. I put it on the laptop again and this time it didn't show up in disk management just device manager.

I am not sure what else to do? Please help me out

Answer:External Hard Drive not showing up!

Call WD, see if they have any tech bulletins on that model, does not sound good.

They had a bunch of problems with 1.5 tb drives when they first came out.

I hope you had your data in more than 1 place, it may be gone on that drive.

I have a similar issue... my laptop (running XP) got into a bluescreen/reboot death cycle.

So, I bought a new Vista laptop, and an enclosure for the old PC's drive.

When I attach the drive to the new laptop, it's light goes on, I hear the disk spin up inside, and a few moments later, it appears as my "F:" drive.

But, when I click on the drive, it looks as though it's empty. Nothing there, no file folders or files, nothing.

Is there something I may be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Answer:External hard drive not showing up on my PC

Hello there,

There are a lot of different reasons for an HDD to stop showing. A few things you can try are:

Try using a different USB cable, make sure it is as short as the original one, or even shorter. This is important it terms of providing enough power for the drive to function properly.

Try connecting it to different USB ports.

Try connecting it to a different PC.

Sometimes the drive can misbehave due to insufficient power even if it appears to be spinning make sure you connect the HDD directly to the USB port and not through a USB hub.

Check if you can see the HDD in Windows Device Manager and in Disk Management. Good luck.

Hi,

Can anyone help please? My Windows 10 updated the other day and since the update my EHD isn't showing up on my PC but I know it's there as it is showing in Device Manager and when I right click on it and go to "Properties" it tells me it's working properly, but I can't use it because it's not showing up in my Devices and Drives! I'm going round and round in circles here trying to sort it out.

I tried to update the driver but it said I had the latest one.

I uninstalled the EHD, waited a while then plugged it back in, restarted my PC and it's showing up
again in Device Manager but it's still not showing up in Devices and Drives. :-(

I don't know what else to do..it's there..but I can't' use it and the annoying thing is, many of my programs I use are on the EHD so I can't use them. :-( I use a very old graphics program which I can't get again so really need to get my EHD working.

Thanks in advance.

So I recently purchased and installed a new hard drive in my PS3. To do that I had to reformat my Western Digital 250 GB hard drive to FAT32 format. Ok, so that's all well and good but I then decided to take my PS3, 60 GB HD (the brand escapes me, but it's a big manufacturer of hard drives) and put it in an external hard drive enclosure. I figured that it's a perfectly good hard drive so there was no sense wasting it. Anyway, as technologically impaired as I might sound after this (which I'm really not) I feel compelled to divulge that I actually did not know that two external hard drives shouldn't be too close to each other. As soon as I put one on top of the other, the 60 GB hard drive beeped and a message popped up saying it needed reformatting. So after reformatting everything a second time, I plugged in the hard drives and the 60 GB one showed up but my 250 GB one did not. It's showing up everywhere else (disk management, device manager) but not in My Computer. So I have no access to it at all. Also, I did not need to reformat the 250 GB HD since my computer gave me no message indicating that I should. I'd rather only use reformatting as an absolute last resort since it takes HOURS but if it's necessary that I'll have to break down. Throw other options at me first though.

If I lost you in the midst of all that jumble, tell me, I'd be happy to explain further.

Hi everybody. I have a problem My 3TB Western Digital Hard Drive is not showing up on any PC I connect it to. The light on the drive itself is on, but no where on the PC does it register.

I am pretty sure the disks aren't spinning either, but that is probably because the computer isn't picking it up, and no vice-versa. Any help with this?

Answer:External Hard Drive not showing up anywhere

Please fill in your specs.
http://www.piriform.com/speccy
Some motherboards require that you configure the BIOS to accept larger drives (2, 3Gb>).
If you're positive that the disks aren't spinning, then that's a red flag as to why the computer doesn't see the drive.

I have an HP Pavillion notebook that doesn't see a Toshiba Cavio external drive. I plugged the drive into a desktop and it saw the drive. I plugged a mouse into both usb slots on the laptop and it worked. The laptop is Windows 7 and the desktop is Windows 8.1 Any idea why the laptop isn't seeing the drive?

Answer:Laptop not showing external drive?

Got it to work! I noticed in device manager it saw the drive but in properties, general, it said the driver software could not be installed due to corruption, error 39.

Looking on the net it said this was due to a registry problem. Following the shot in the dark theory I ran this registry cleaner called Ace Utilities. I've used it before and it's very reliable. It found 750 errors which were removed.

Then I noticed an icon on the desktop for Seagate Diskwizard which was pointed out to be made by Acronis and used snapman.sys. I removed it with Revo Uninstaller and rebooted.

The drive is now seen and works with Shadowprotect backup software. Thanks for everyone's help.

First, I apologize if this question has been posted before but I tried searching on this site for the answer but didn't seem to find one. Here is my problem. I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop running Vista Home Premium which has been giving me problems since the day I purchased it. After many calls to Toshiba and taking it back to the store of purchase, the only answer I get is: Format it! So after creating the recovery cds I have to back up bazillions of files. My brother is letting me use his hard drive which is in a SSK USB enclosure. Unfortunately I do not know the make of the hard drive in the enclosure and he is away so I cannot ask him. Here is the problem:
1. I plug it into the USB port and the laptop makes the sound of finding new hardware and the little icon appears saying "safely remove hardware"
2. I click on My Computer and the hard drive is no where to be found
3. I clicked on Device Manager and I can see it under USB Mass Storage Device
4. I go to Disk Management and I can see it as Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized

I have never connected an external hard drive before so I'm a little scared to Initialize it because I know my brother has lots of files already stored on it and I do not want to erase them. I know he did have it connected to his Mac pc and his Macbook so i'm not sure if this is what is causing the problem. Hey there. I have an issue with my Toshiba External Hard Drive not showing up on my new PC. Shows up just fine on my old PC, but doesn't so much as show up in drive management on my new pc. The only real difference between the two systems being the new PC is much faster, and it has 3.0 USB hubs instead of 2.0 USB hubs... I'm about 98% the files are there, the new PC just isn't picking it up. I'll note, though I don't know how much it has to do with anything, my drive when plugged into my old PC will show as a white light and blink white, where on my new PC it is a solid blue color and doesn't flash. And again, on my new PC, doesn't even register or show up as a partition. I will also note, every other USB item I've plugged into the same USB port functions (mouse, keyboard, speakers, thumb drives) and I've tried multiple other ports. It isn't the kind that requires an external power source (just like a giant thumb drive). It has 500 GB's total, and had about 700mb or so free last I had it open on my old PC. This is a link to the same make and model as mine. https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Portable-Hard-Drive/dp/B005J7YA64?th=1Any ideas on how to access my stuff on my new PC?

Answer:Toshiba External Hard Drive not showing on new PC?

Do you have any thumb drives to test on this USB port to see if its a bad port on new computer? It could be possible for 2 of 4 wires to make connection to power the drive but no data communication on the other 2 wires. If other data devices such as a thumb drive work fine then it is likely a driver issue where the controller in the external hard drive Windows doesnt have the proper driver to mount this drive.Solutions to gain access to your data at the new computer are:- Locate the driver needed for Toshiba External USB drive support for your OS and install it so it knows how to mount this drive on new PC.- Move the hard drive inside to a different external drive caddy that the newer OS supports the drivers for- Remove the HDD from the Toshiba external case and mount it direct to a SATA Data and Power connection to a desktop computer- Connect to the old computer through a network share, and have this older computer connected to the Toshiba external drive and then from newer computer access the data on the Toshiba drive through the network share with new computer connected over network to old computer. Old computer has no problems with driver support to mount this drive and so you have access to the data.- Use a newer external hard drive that new computer can use, connect this to old computer and copy entire drive from old drive to new drive and now you have it accessible on new computer.- Connect Toshiba drive to old computer and connect a say 64GB USB stick to the old compu... HELP!!!

I have a 500gb external hard drive which, up until a few days ago, was working absolutely fine.

When I would plug it in to my laptop the device was found under 'my computer'.but would not open. Instead when I tried to open it my computer froze and the 'not responding' message was shown, resulting in a forced close of my computer. Now when I attach the hard drive and open 'my computer' the hard drive does not show at all, but 'my computer' still shows the message 'not responding', resulting in a forced close.

I've been on to a couple of forums already and tried the route of right clicking 'my computer', 'manage' and 'disk management'; but the hard drive does not appear there.

I'm at a total loss what to do and would massively appreciate your help as I have backed up company data on to this hard drive.

Thank you in advance!

I have a internal western digital drive mounted in an external caddy. its not showing in Disk Drives in device manager but is showing under universal serial bus controllers as Cypress AT2LP. Its an IDE type drive and I have moved the jumper settings around but still cant get it recognised in 'My Computer'.
Anyone come across this before. Help appreciated

Answer:external hard drive not showing in 'My Computer'

I also had this problem and found that the only solution was to 'flash' the EEPROM.
It was a very simple process which may require several re-boots and it does work.

Hi guys,
I bought a brand new buffalo ministation 500gb hard drive, plugged it into my laptop and everything as working fine.It was recognised in my computer and i proceeded to transfer a file from another external hard drive onto it.This caused my laptop to freeze,so i removed my new hard drive and so the problems began
The hard drive shows up in device manager and disc management but not in my computer
In disc management,it is under Disc 2,offline and not initialised and is unallocated.
When i try and initialize or right click offline i get the message "I/O device error"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it is very frustrating

I have tried different USB ports and USB cables to no avail

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Showing On My Computer

"i get the message "I/O device error"

That almost certainly indicates that the drive in question is faulty. It's by no means unheard of for a new drive to be faulty.

May be posting in wrong part of the forum, forgive me if I am.

Unfortunately, I have another issue. I just hooked up my external hard drive, which has some of my backed up information on it before I went and reformatted my computer.

However, even though it says that the hard drive is hooked up to the computer, I am unable to actually find it under my computer.

I stopped messing with it due to the fact that I have pictures on this hard drive and much more. I do not want to lose them. I need to take some time out of my day and actually burn these images onto discs so that way I don't lose them completely.

Any suggestions as to why the external hard drive is not showing up under my computer?

My External hard drive that worked well with WIndows 8.1, does not appear on "This PC" after I upgraded to windows 10 (Dell Inspiron) . Upon connecting the USB plug, I hear rge right sound, and the device manager shows an icon with the comment "V:I product string, Driver error". What do I do next?

Answer:My External hard drive worked with WIn 8.1, but not showing with Win 10, why?

With the device plugged in, check windows update.
Also what is the model of the hard drive? Have you checked the manufacturer website for a firmware update?

I have a 1TB external hard disk from Transcend.
I had 4 drives in it with one has BITLOCKER enabled. I was trying to make a drive bootable. But something went wrong and the system hanged up.
Now only 1 drive of the 4 is being shown in the computer.
The disk management shows only one drive with the whole 931gb while the computer is showing the same with the memory i allocated(201gb) to it with all the data.
Drive Letters are getting assigned to other 3 drives, and while trying to access them using DOS, it says "THE DEVICE IS NOT READY".
chkdsk cant find any error, tried some other tools to but no progress.
Please suggest what can fix the problem. Formatting the whole drive and then retrieving data can do, but the most important data are encrypted. Please Help

Answer:External Hard drive not showing all the drives

For the first part, have you thought about using a linux live cd or dvd to access your hdd's contents and pull out what you need and put them somewhere safe ?
Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek

Ubuntu is one way of doing it, I prefer suse v11 or higher to get anything done majorly with hdd disk problems.
Next, you might want to take your external hdd and partition them into 3 parts that you need for whatever your doing.
If not, just give it a 1 hour long format using NTFS, check the drive for errors and finish up with it.

Hi, I have a USB3 1TB WD Elements external hard drive which has stopped responding.
I was using it with the laptop sorting out files I'd backed up ready to put back onto my laptop after a 'return to factory settings'. It worked no problem.

Then I attached it to my TV to watch some stored films from it. At first the logo's showed and it tried to play some then just became unresponsive and was not even recognised as being attached to the TV. The light came on the hard drive as if it was working. We are travelling in a motorhome, and during this time the 12 volt power consumption acted as if a film was playing. There was ample power available.

When I attached it back onto my laptop it made the usual noise indicating that a USB device had been attached and the lights came on the hard drive, but it does not show up in Windows Explorer.
The first few times I got the green usb logo bottom right task bar, and it showed there as being attached when I click to remove a device. Now it does not seem to get the green usb logo even.

It makes the usual sounds when attached and detached.

I have tried 2 different laptops with same results.

I know there were some files on the hard drive when I got it. One was for a software trial and a couple of others. If I have deleted these accidentally, could that have caused the problem?

All my back up stuff is on there, so please can anyone help?

Thanks, Jan

Answer:external hard drive not showing contents

Hi, just some extra information in case it helps.

I have tried using it on my Asus Eee Shell series 1001PX notebook and my Acer Aspire 5542g laptop.

I have looked in Device Manager where it shows up and says it is working properly. Under volumes there is no information given against all the titles disc; type; status etc.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I have 3 external hard drives from old laptops. I purchased a refurbished Dell Desktop PC 18 months ago. I've never had to use my old drives with it, until now... and they don't seem to show up anywhere and I can't access the data. Can anyone help please? Thankyou

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Showing On Desktop PC :(

are these all connected via a USB
sounds like a PC issue if ALL three are not seen
What windows version do you have on the new PC
and what Windows version was on the PC you use to copy the drives

Are they in a case - does the case need power , is that working on all three drives?

I am having an issue with a Seagate external USB hard drive that I have connected to my Windows 7 PC. It is powered on when I start my computer. When I go to "my computer" to look for the drive, it is not there. I disconnect power to the drive and hear the Windows hardware disconnect sound, leading me to believe that Windows did acknowledge that is was indeed connected. I plug the hard drive back in and suddenly the drive shows up and all is well. Why is this happening and what can I do to make it work normally?

I'll also add that when I start my computer with the drive turned off, when I do power up the drive...nothing. It only seems to work when the drive is on when Windows is started. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kevin

I have a 1.5TB WD external hard drive. It was running extremely slow so i ran a defrag and it fixed it. But it also has a mac partition on it so i ran the repair disk thing for mac in disk utility.
However my mac is a laptop so it ran out of battery part way through the operation. Now when i plug it in it both the mac and PC it is not picked up in explorer and Disk management (under computer management).

So no partitions show up in either finder on mac or explorer on windows

Edit: When i connect the hard drive it has a flashing light on it like it normally does when it connecting to pc just before it shows up in explorer. It has been flashing like this for hours as it has been plugged into pc this whole time. when it connects and shows up in explorer and is not in use that light normally stays solid

Answer:Need help with a external hard drive not showing up in explorer

I'd start with test disk:

\
FWIW: I have Ubuntu on my Netbook. If I start a lengthy operation like defrag on battery, it will ask me if I really want to do that. I've run into a number of prompts like that, and it makes me wonder why Windows never figured that out.

It depends on your operating system. From past experience XP has no problem, older versions of windows need the correct driver and win95 early version wont see it at all.

Hope that helps. Rik.

i have a seagate backup plus 5 tb drive that's around 3 months old and has worked fine up until now. something happened, no idea what, but now it shows almost no free space. the drive is completely empty, and it only has 236 kb of available drive space. i've looked in disk management and everything looks fine there. all 4600 gb is showing up. when i try adding a file over 236 kb, it says there's not enough space. formatting the drive didn't help. currently using fat, but i tried formatting ntfs and it said windows was unable to complete the format. anyone got any suggestions?

Ok, for my 2600k upgrade I backed everything up onto a data 500GB HD from my windows 7 Pro 64bit. Once my SSD came in I installed windows on it and then plugged in the 500GB data drive. Unforutnately it didn`t show up and I could only find it listed in disc management as a 500gb unallocated space HDD. Figuring this was something odd about it being plugged in as a secondary drive I put it back into the external USB drive but neither the new or the original system would recognize it other than in disc management as unallocated space. I went and plugged the external drive into my XP system...samething. Any ideas about how to get this data back. It`s very important stuff and I don`t want to lose it.

Thanks guys,

My external usb hard drive was connected to a pc which crashed. On rebooting and trying to use the drive it tells me it is not formatted. Do you know anyway to recover the data? It was my main backup and contains a friends itunes collection and guess what his pc has died. I can only assume that the mbr has been garbled but know no way of getting in to rewrite it. It is a Maxtor 320GB. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

I have had a WD Hard drive connected to my computer for over a year and since added a second one in a 'firewire' daisy chain. The original is a 250G and the new one is a 500G. BOTH have been working for months but, on occasion, one or the other "disappears".

In the past I have restarted my computer and it shows up but, that is not happening this time. Oddly enough the one that is NOT showing up is the original 250G HD. My computer recognizes the 500G that is 'daisy chained' to it but NOT the original 250G.

How does this happen? Can I prevent this in the future? And...more importantly ... how can I fix this??

Thank you for any help you can provide

I bought an external drive about 2 months ago, got it set up with a new partition using disk management. it worked fine, as of today for some reason it stopped working (stopped showing up in my computer, explorer, as well as disk management) im not sure what to do at this point. i have already uninstalled the drivers, plugged in the USB that connects to my external, and it updated automatically, so im guessing its not the drives/USB ports. it says everything is installed and ready to use yet i can not see the drive in my computer or disk management? any suggestions would be great...thanks

Hi,

I've looked at various threads and still cannot solve this issue.

My Seagate Portable Drive seems to work as the green light comes on.

Screen shot of my Disk Management below. Am I missing something?

Other solutions have been to right click and assign a drive, but those listed below other that the C: don't allow.

Using OS Windows 8.1
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I'm having some problems with my Transcend StoreJet external hard drive. I had it for a while now and it was working normally until now. Today, I have read around the internet about eleventy billion questions/answers about installing the Windows 8 Upgrade via various scenarios, the one that seems to be baffling people is this one:

Can you install the Upgrade on a fresh, completely empty hard drive, one with no OS already on it and no other drives with an OS hooked up?

This is *not* asking if you can do a "clean" install on a machine with an existing OS on it. This is asking basically, if I build a new box with new drive and no other OS on it, installing a larger replacement drive and/or SSD drive, etc.

I asked this question over at Neowin forums and wow, the answers are literally all over the universe. From what I can gather, initially the answer is NO, you can't. Users have installed it but it won't activate, the error message is about installing the OS with no previous OS being seen.

However, someone posted a registry key that needs to be changed before activation, very similar to the Windows 7 double-install method. The registry key is:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OOBE]
"MediaBootInstall"=dword:00000000
According to the user who posted that, using the upgrade download (maybe even the upgrade boxed copy) with the upgrade key results in the above key being 1 not 0. It will not activate as such. Changing the key to 0 will allow for successful activation. Seems the TechNET/MSDN version when installed sets this key to 0 out of the ... Read more

My external hard drive isn't showing up in windows explorer. It does show up in the disk manager and it says healthy.

I have tried changing the drive letter and that didn't work. I have also tried plugging it into a different usb port.

It has never done this before. What is going on?

Post the data reflected in Disk Management for this drive, please.

Both from the upper and lower levels of the Disk Management screen.
