Office 2010- the other apps have Word icons and open to Office.

Question: Office 2010- the other apps have Word icons and open to Office.

it's possible that Office was installed improperly, i cannot open any other non Windows app, they all open to Office Word. is this a virus?
System Restore opens to Office, Control Panel works normally. How can I fix this?

Preferred Solution: Office 2010- the other apps have Word icons and open to Office.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Office 2010- the other apps have Word icons and open to Office.

Is this a legally liensed version of MS Office?
Sounds as if you didn't install Office...who did, in that case?
When was Office installed?
System manufacturer and model?

I recently installed the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta, but this morning its intro screen stays stuck at "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run." Googling it resulted in only two threads, neither of them having the answer.

I'm back to using Office 2007, by simply setting my Word and Excel documents to open by Office 2007 by default, but now my Word and Excel icons have become much less pretty, such as my Word icons becoming a very plain "DOCX" icon instead of the normal "blue W" icon. I checked, and the file types are still regular Word documents. Is there a way to get the pretty icons back?

Answer:Office 2010 Problems: "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run" & Unattractive DOCX icons for Word documents.

Regarding changing the icon:
Go to either My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Click Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab.
Scroll down to the DOCX file type (file types are in alphabetical order), click on it one time to highlight it.
Click the Advanced button.
The "Edit File Type" screen appears.
There is a Change Icon button in the top right area.
Click the Change Icon button.
You should have other icon choices to pick from.
Side note: If you don't like any of those icons, you can always hit the Browse button,
and browse to where other icons are, (you can assign any icon to any file type that you want, it is a matter of personal preference).
Icons are found in .exe files (executables), some (not all) .dll (dynamic link library) files, and .ico files.

Suddenly I can't open Word in my Office Starter 2010. It says "must be repaired before it can run." Then asks me if I want instructions for repairing and nothing shows up when I click yes. I can't open Excel either. I get "program can't start because gfx.dll missing. Can anyone tell me what I should do? Thanks.

Answer:Can't Open Word or Excel in Office 2010

Welcome to the MG Forums.

'gfx.dll' is part of Office 2010; if it is missing, try running a Microsoft Office repair:
Control Panel | Programs and Features: right-click on Microsoft Office and select Change, then on the installation panel click Repair.

Okay, I've never posted on anything like this before so bear with me please. I've got an issue and it's driving me nuts because I can't resolve it. I'll try and give a description of what I did. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I purchased a new Dell computer (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) that came with a trial version of Office 2010. I had previously purchased an Office 2010 Pro so I wanted to install the full version on my computer. When I did, I had both versions installed, so I uninstalled the trial version. That's when I think my problem arose, but I can't say for sure that it didn't exist before that because I hadn't even looked.

Here's the problem:
When I'm in Windows Explorer looking at my files, my Excel and Word files (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx) show up with an improper file type description. Instead of saying "Microsoft Word Document" or "Microsoft Excel 1997-2003 Worksheet" (or whatever they're supposed to say) the simply say "DOCX File" or "XLS File". Not only that, but the icons don't look right either. They sort of look right, but they're smaller and sort of greyed out (Except the .docx icon is just a white page with lines object).

The strange thing is, is that ALL my other Office files show up with correct descriptions and icons etc. (.ppt, .pptx, .csv....etc - ALL of them!)

What I've tried to fix it:
I uninstalled all Office Products and then reinstalled Office 2010.

I tried MS's little bug finder pr... Read more

When directly opening Word Docs or Excel Spreadsheets on a Win2k Server running Office 2000, winword.exe and excel.exe take at least 45 seconds to begin running and then an additional 10-15 seconds for the document to load. If you open winword.exe or excel.exe directly, then go to file > open and browse for the document they will open instantly. I have done the following without success:

1) Scanned for Viruses, Spyware, Adware using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 9.0, Spybot, and Adaware - no viruses and no major adware\spyware.
2) turned Symantec Antivirus off
3) removed and reinstalled Office 2k
4) defragmented all three partitions of the hard drive
5) there is plenty of free drive space
6) 512MB of RAM - all other programs open fine, excel and winword will open quickly, just not the documents themselves
7) reboot pc nightly

After removing and installing Office 2k, I attempted to double-click on a document, I was prompted to accept the EULA, accepted and the document opened immediately. All following attempts to open any Word or Excel document displayed the "slow" symptoms.

Answer:Office Apps(Word and Excel) Open Slowly

Using Norton AV, you have to go into Options General and uncheck the "Enable Plugin" box at the bottom under Microsoft Office XP Plugin.

Symantic must have a similar feature but I don't know what it is.

On Microsoft Word 2010, when you go to either the Open or Save as dialog boxes, you see a folder tree called "Microsoft Word", under which in my computer has Templates. In Microsoft Excel, it has a similar affect, showing "Microsoft Excel". I want to remove this tree from view, and ONLY want to see "Computer" (or "This PC" on Windows 8.1). Is this possible, and if so, how?

Can this be done locally and/or through group policy?

Just bought a new laptop with Windows7 64bit installed-my first exposure to Windows7. I had Office 2007 installed on my old Dell 32 bit machine. I had also recently pruchased Office 2010 and installed that on my new machine.

Now, when I try to open those 32bit 2007 files with 64bt 2011, Iget an error message that "no picture file is available", or words to that effect. When I try to "open with", the only option displayed is "Microsoft Office" with an icon that looks like a picture file. When I try to browse to the proper office program(Excel, for example), there are none of teh Office suite programs displayed, only "Microsoft Office".

I can navigate seperately to the proper progran, Excel, etc., and drag the file into the application, and it opens, and all seems to work OK. I "save as" the proper application file, but it still will not open with double-click on the file name.

I have not seen this particular item in the forums and would appreciate very much some help in fixing this issue.

I'm running Windows 7 on my new computer, which came with a trial version of Office 2010. Rather than buy the full version when the trial expired, I installed the Office 2003 I had on my old -- now dead -- computer. I now find that I can't open the Word and Excel files I created with the 2010 version. Is there a 'cloud' site where I could send the 2010 files and have them returned to me as standard .xls and .doc files? Or is there a free converter available for download?

2010 doesn't have different file extensions from 2007. docx, xlsx, pptx, accdb. You should be able to open those files in 2007 without issue. Also, it's not really the best idea to have two different versions of Office installed. They can conflict, especially when it comes to macros and equations.

I have a client that has Office 365. They have two people with this issue. It's not really a huge problem but more as an annoyance. Whenever they go to open a document through an Office product (Word/Excel: File>Open>Computer>Browse) the documents appear but they're missing the icons next to their name. There's barely any information on it when Googling this and they all seem to lead to dead ends for us. The two I have found are and neither have resolved our issue. I have ran a repair on Office, re-installed office, recreated Windows icons, and opened the programs in Safe Mode to no avail. No Add-Ins are causing the issue. You can see the icons to the left of the files in Internet Explorer when going to Documents. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

I have long used Open Office, but recently I read in PC Advisor that Libre Office (derived from it)was better. However printing an envelope in Libre Office seems almost impossible. When the print order is given, the small text window to the left shows the wrong size, and when printing a DL envelope it clearly shows and gives the size of a B5 envelope. I did not make a mistake in selecting the correct size. Can anyone help and is this a problem with Libre Office?

Answer:Word Processing problem, Open Office and Libre Office

I have Libre Office version and just tried to print a DL envelope and had no problems.
When I prepared the envelope, I went into Format/Page and selected DL Envelope. then Landscape. This set the paper size. I then typed the envelope with a return address on the top right side and the recipient address amid-ships. Put the envelope in the printer, long ways in and bingo.
As a matter of interest do you have to change the paper size in the printer properties? I didn't on mine. I also have to say that I am using a MAC, but the principles should be the same on a Windows machine.

Yes, you can, IIRC. This is what attracted me to it in the first place!

Yes, if the application doesn't do it natively, PDF creation apps that we were discussing earlier (PDF Creator comes to mind) should allow you to create the PDFs... not sure about some that were mentioned, but this app installs a printer that you can use from any application to "print" into a PDF file.

We are wanting to up-grade our current Office suite Office 2003 to either Office 2010 or Office 2013.  Our PC's are running Windows 7
I would just like to know what peoples opinions and advice is on this?

Answer:Up-grade from Office 2003 to Office 2010 or Office 2013

I can't speak to Office 2013, but I've done numerous upgrades to Office through 2010.  When you install the new version, you have the option to keep the old version or just replace it.  Starting with Office 2007 the familiar menu bar has been replaced with the ribbons which take a lot of getting used to for folks used to older versions.  There's a little program called UbitMenu that will add most of the menu bar functions back in the 2007 and 2010 versions that a lot of folks find helpful.  If you do opt to have two different versions installed at the same time, what happens is that when you switch from one to the other, it goes through a juggling act that takes a minute or so.  It's a bit of a pain, but if you need it, it could be a convenience.
Good luck.

For some reason, I can't get any of the Office 2010 programs to pin to the taskbar on Windows 7 Home Premium. When the program is running, the jumplist has no button to pin the program. If I go into the Start Menu and hit Pin to Taskbar from there, it gives me a working shortcut on the taskbar, but the program creates a new taskbar button when it launches, completely ignoring the one that's already there.

Even stranger, I don't have this problem on my other computer running Win 7 Pro.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Question: Office 2010 Icons

In office 2k, I was able to modify my icons to make it more identifiable from others, i.e., I could make a macro, assign an icon and then change the icon color or draw a symbol on it. I have been unable to find a way to do ths in Office 2010. am I missing something or did they remove that option altogether?

Answer:Office 2010 Icons

Hi Patrick 67, welcome to the forum,

Did you modify existing icons. Or create new ones?
Are you talking about MS application file icons or folder icons?

I am using MS Paint (copied from XP OS and am using it in Win7) to create new icons (BMP) and then using a web based file converter to convert BMP to ICO files.
I find the MS-Paint (from XP) is better suited to pixel building than the Win7 version of paint.
But there are several icon apps on the web. I never bothered because they were commercial and my requirements were very minimal. I could not justify the cost.

BMP building is rather tedious but it does work.

What OS are you using? Snipping tool in Win7/8 is very handy for copying images as PNG then open in paint to save as BMP if you want to modify pixels. Then the web-based converter from BMP to ICO.
The web-based converter will also do PNG to ICO.

Let me know how you get on.
NOTE my avatar was a snipped PNG file of an image which I touched up and changed colors in BMP format.

On the Windows Team Blog, Microsoft has officially launched Web Apps for everyone in the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland. It is also accessible to other countries as well, just not yet in their native language. Web Apps is built around your personal SkyDrive, which gives you 25 GB of free online storage space for all of your documenting needs. With the desktop version of Office 2010, documents can also be saved to your SkyDrive, then revisited and shared online through your web browser. This makes accessing your personal files on-the-go a cinch. Web Apps also allows multiple people to collaborate on a single document simultaneously, while still maintaining a version history in case you ever need to go back in time. You can even view your saved documents on most smartphones.

First of all, hi, this is my first post here. I have a major problem. My Office 2010 icons are missing. I checked the internet for solutions and none worked and right now i have two options, manually uninstall office 2010 (which i rather won't because last time i had to reinstall the os because of that) and manually copying the c:\windows:\installer\{} folder.

I changed a lot of icons and after changing an icon or something my office icons were gone (along with a couple others) and after checking i saw that it was because the folders in c:\windows:\installer were somehow deleted. So what i ask you is please upload and send me the C:\Windows\Installer\{90140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} if you have Office 2010 (professional plus) so i can have my icons back again. Please. Thank you!!

P.S: Repair or uninstall doesn't work, deleting and creating an icon cache doesn't work.

Answer:Office 2010 missing icons - PLEASE Help!

This may be a year or two late but the approach I used was to download ShadowExplorer, and I was able to find the Installer subfolder for MS Word there and I just exported it back to my Installer folder and reset my icons with FileTypesMan.

I don't have the same version of Office as you but hopefully this can help you or anyone else who might get this problem down the line.

I've tried other ideas off multiple forums but as yet I've been unsuccessful.

Can not repair/uninstall office. tried to rebuild icon cache.db , used replacement icon files that were posted on a forum and copied them over.

The problem was either linked to ccleaner (over reaching its bounds) or when I made changes to windows and registry folders (probably the latter).

Any walkthroughs or advice that anyone has would be greatly appreciated, i wouldn't mind so much if the 'missing icon' icon wasn't so damn ugly...

Hey guys, This is my first post so if i screw up let me know... this has happened now several times... The first time was when i downloaded my webcam driver from Microsoft, i have a Microsoft VX-3000. BTW i am using Windows 7 ultimate 64bit. I solved it by getting angry backing up and reformatting.

I should explain myself a bit, I am using the Office 2010 Official Beta that i downloaded from the microsoft website.

When I install My webcam driver (this happened again the second time when i install Wizards of the Coast Character Builder) Many of my icons disappear.

Adobe Reader, Skype, Steam, windows live messenger, All my office icons and iTunes

Now normally i just go into Add/Remove and just repair the program and the Icons come back, but for office, they are not... First off when i repair it says the repair failed, when i try to remove or add/remove option, i get the same thing... I was told this is because i am missing the office folder in C:/windows/installer/

Now i have tried one reformating and repairing... it work... but now it won't work... 3rd time it has happened.

I am at the point were system reformat seems like my only option left... what do you guys think, what can i do, i was thinking of installing it on a new harddrive and copying the installer folder and just bringing it back to this harddrive.

Good morning!

My computer shut down (battery died) while windows was updating and now every Microsoft Office program and associated files icons display as a generic white rectangle with little squares in it. I am thus unable to differentiate between ppt of word files...

How can I fix this?

I'm on an HP computer running Windows 7 and Office 2010.

Let me start off by saying that this really isn't a major problem, i can still use the applications fine and they work and open perfectly. But all the icons have disappeared, except for Excel. It's really annoying me, Iíve tried loads of things like resetting the icons to default but nothing seems to work. The icon Image is that of a .dll file, even all my documents which i have already saved (they all still open and work perfectly thought). Can someone please help me fix this small problem? I will post a picture soon to help you guys understand what i mean. Thank you in advance.

It seems that there may be a problem in Office 2010. I just installed it to the standard MS default/recommended settings .........all looked good...used Word great..until I use Excel and each time I try to use excel it sets off an 'Office Configuration' screen which I can not take a few minutes and then loads OK. I tried to launch it from the installed prgrams icon but there is no files on 'start in' etc..I tied to create a shortcut to the desktop from the excel.exe file and get the same reconfigure seem that somehow I don't have either permissions or I have a corrupt install..all Office suite works eventually Anyone know how to fix it..please?

Answer:Office 2010 Pro Plus Win7 x 64 Excel reconfigures Office 2010

Have you ever had a previous version of Office on this copy of win7?

Do you have any component of a previous office suite installed still

I have seen this in the past with Viso that was due to remnents of an earlier trial remaining on disk and in the registry.

I also found that if I cancelled the configuration screen the Viso would load without problems without the need to wait for completion.

There are some rather involved solution stems on Microsoft website - cannot find them at the present but will try to look for them.

The problem was that I could never get the removal steps to actually cure the issue and I put up with the error until my next re-install of Win7, which was not to long in the case of that system

I don't know if maybe I'm the only one who runs into this problem or if it happens to a lot of people, but it seems to come up a lot for me.

I have had this issue on many computers but right now I am setting up an old Dell Latitude E5510 for an employee and I have reformatted, installed all drivers, and programs needed. I installed Office 2007, because this employee won't really be using the computer much.

I start up Windows Updates today and it has me downloading 3 updates for Windows 2010. This computer had Office 2010 on it before it was reformatted. Is it still sensing Office 2010 buried somewhere in the files and that's why it's asking me to install updates for it? Does Office 2007 use updates that are also made for 2010(and are only labled 2010)? Anyone have any ideas? I don't believe it's hurting anything, but I am curious!

I am a novice at this and I have searched and searched over the last week trying to figure out a fix to this.

I'm trying to create a Word Macro to remove time from date:

This occurs in 4 different cells.

Cell in Word shows: 05/04/2016 10:00:00

I just need the date to show without the time.

Looking for a code that will make this happen.

Code that I have used for other issues looks something like this, however, the below example is what I'm trying to accomplish:

Sub TIME()
' TIME Macro

With Selection.Find

.Text = "??:??:??"
.Replacement.Text = ""
.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll, Forward:=True, _

End With

End Sub

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Choose between Translate Document, Translate Selected Text (where you must first highlight some text to be translated) and Mini Translator. The translation occurs online, and languages can be set in Translate > Choose Translation Language. It doesn?t take long for the translation to be returned, and this is a better option that going to the trouble of opening a browser, finding a translation service, pasting the text in and waiting for the results. Finally, you can alter the dictionary language of your Word document via the Language tool. Hello all,

I have Office 2010 installed. I often print an online news article to the xps format. Sometimes I have the need to convert this format to Word.

The question is how do I make the conversion without using a free software. It is preferable to use a software that would retain the original format of the article.

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to help me find such a software.

Thank you.

Answer:How to convert MS xps documents to Word in Office 2010?

Try to convert XPS to a DOC* format is a complicated OCR task, same as trying to take a picture of an old newspaper and then trying to scan and make it editable in Word.

You need something like ABBYY FineReader 11 Professional Edition
It keeps original formatting as much as possible.

Ironically, I just found the solution that fixed my problem! I will share it, so anyone else having this problem can resolve it just as easily.

Start Menu > Type "winword /r" into the Search Bar > Press Enter, and allow the installation wizard to complete. Done! Problem solved!

I have scoured the internet for the past week, trying to find a solution. I have tried every solution through Google, including Brink's IconCache reset. Nothing has resulted in a solution.

I am at my wit's end. I have tried the system restore, deleting the IconCache.db (and rebooting), resetting the default program settings, trying to repair it (nothing happens, starts up and just closes) changing this and that, and nothing has worked.

I see the icons in the /ProgramFiles(x64), but nothing in the regular program files. This issue happened out of nowhere. The unfortunate part is we do not have the disc in order to re-install the programs (Microsoft Office Standard 2010), because as this is a work computer only the corporate office has discs and we're on our own with this problem.

I would really appreciate some help. Feeling frustrated with this whole issue, and I'm hoping I can get a working solution.

Have Office 2010. Cannot figure out how to add/change/delete email icons on left side of email page. For example somehow I have two identical email addess's with all the buttons under each one. One of them does not really work. How do I delete the entire email address set of icons because I have a duplicate email set of icons just below it.
The one that does work does not have a "deleted items" icon under the inbox. When I delete them they just disappear. I needed to retrieve one I deleted but couldnt find it.

Help---how do I manage these icons?

Answer:Creating/Deleting/Management of Email Icons in Office 2010

You probably have to data files set up by accident. Go to File > Data File Management. If there are 2 pst or data files listed there remove the one you don't need. You could rename one of them first and then go back in your email to see if it is the correct one to delete.

this started because i have bought microsoft office 2010 & during the instillation it requires you to uninstall any old possibly conflictiong programmes. it highlighted word 2002 as being an issue but it seems some of its components are missing so i am unable to remove it fully or re-install it using the instillation cd.

is it possible to remove the parts of it that are remaining on my computer & are conflicting with the newer version of office? i have searched the net & there doesnt seem to be any way to do this most stuff guides you back to add/remove programmes.

Answer:how can i uninstall word 2002 manually in xp so i can run office 2010

Scroll down and download the free version of this and install it.
Run the program and select word from the list and uninstall.
Select advanced for the uninstall.
It will run the uninstaller first,so you will probably get the same error.
Continue and it will search for files related to the program to delete.
Delete them.
Continue and it will look for registry entries to delete.
Double check those to make sure they belong to word and
delete the ones that do.
Then finish and restart the computer.

This is an update to Microsoft Office Word 2007 (including Office 2007 suites) and Microsoft Office Word 2003 (including the Office 2003 suites). This update was issued as a result of a United States court ruling on December 22, 2009. Generally, customers who purchase or license Word 2007 or Word 2003 from Microsoft after January 10, 2010 for use in the United States and its territories will need to use updated software that does not include a particular custom XML tagging implementation. The following section provides more information about the custom XML tagging capability that is removed by this update.

You must install this update if you are instructed by Microsoft in a separate communication.

Hi there
does this only apply to the US (and it's territories) or is this dependent on where you sourced your copies of Office from.

My Office 2007 was a "Use at Home" version shipped from the USA - I've also got a technet copy of 2007 and 2010 -- I assume these are US editions as well.

You may have a corrupted Office installation so insert your Office DVD and choose the Repair option.

After installing the latest Windows updates, I was unable to open any Word or Excel programs on my computer. The doc opened, but immediately an error message dialogue box came up:

Error message: Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this product. You should repair the Office program by using Control Panel.

The only 2 options available were to click the X to close, or click OK button. Both resulted in the doc closing.

Control panel --> Office did not display an option to repair.

I run Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and Office 2010 Home and Student ... both legitimate store bought products with product keys.

I even tried to uninstall and re-install Office with no change in the results.

I uninstalled the Windows updates with no change, then re-installed them.

System restore did nothing to change the issue.

I would appreciate any help with this issue.

Thank you.

Hello!I have office 2010 home. When in Excel, the file is open - is it possible to change the file name? When I go to "File" tab, any selected file gets open on one click, although in the Windows control panel it is set so that a file should be opened on two clicks. Is it possible to set the same way in Office? Thank you, Helen O

Answer:Office 2010 open with two clicks

If a file is open, you cannot rename it, though you can use Save as... to save it under another name. In this case, you will have two identical files under different names. If the Excel program is open and you click File and then click Open, that is already two clicks. I do not know a way to both use File menu and double-click method to open a file. In my opinion, one extra click is unnecessary and does nothing but accelerating the wearing of the mouse.CoolGuy

Some Office 2010 icons are missing in quick launch and start menu and only generics show. The correct icon is displayed in the properties sheet but are not displayed correctly on the menu and taskbar.

I did follow the thread to leave Office 2007 on the machine and separated the files in the start menu structure once the install was done.

The menu looks like the attached jpg. I was hoping not to reinstall office but will have to if I can't solve it.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Office 2010 icons missing in quick launch and start menu

Go to start button/all programs/MSOffice/select the one at a time and pin to taskbar.
I hope I am understanding your question if not post back and we will get it fixed.

I was troubleshooting a computer remotely that lost it's icons for Office programs, they all show system. The files still open fine. However, it is annoying the user so I tried to repair. But going to control panel and right clicking "change" a window pops up but then nothing happens. The windows disappears and no "repair" selection shows up. So put in the install disk and try again and nothing happens.

Is the only fix a reinstall? I tried to reinstall without uninstalling thinking maybe the repair is there but I received two errors:

I have Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus and I keep getting this problem: My Office 2010 icons are not showing correctly; instead they show as the Office 2007 icons. I'm not talking about the actual executable files, I'm talking about saved documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc. Now I found a way to fix this, by repairing Microsoft Office and it basically reinstalls itself. However, I have had to do this many times, probably at least 10 times. Does anyone know why this is ocurring and why I have to keep repairing Office? I would appreciate any help given.

Hi all. I hope i'm on a correct thread as this is for IdeaPad S serier netbook. Currently on Windows 7 Starter (netbook) that comes preloaded with MS Office Starter 2010. I do have a genuine MS Office 2003 which previous comes with my PC i bought many years ago. I'm wondering can i install it on top of the current MS Office Starter 2010 OR do i need to uninstall the preloaded MS Office Starter 2010 first? What if i would need the MS Office Starter 2010 again next time? I dare not to do it because i worry i will crash all the MS Office apps... Any idea? Thank you...

Answer:Can install lower version of MS Office ontop of the preloaded MS Office Starter 2010?

Relating to the old version.  Do you have an Office cd or is it a part of a restore cd?  If the former you might be in luck, if the latter, probably not. Secondly, you may or may not be able to do what you want.  I would uninstall the starter first then install the older.  Even this you may be in for a problem.  I did a beta of 2010, then installed an older version and it took MS two days over the phone to get things straightened out and they did that by having me restore windows and that only worked for a few months.  in the process of this mess I found dozens of forums filled with people with the same problem I was having. For some reason the first newer install leaves something in the registry that - even though the older one installs right - makes the system think it needs to reinstall one of them and it will go through a long process of configuring etc. As to whether you can reinstall the 2010, again you would have to have a separate cd to do so unless you wanted to restore your entire drive and lose all yoiur stuff plus the older office. Others, my wife included on her computer, have had no problem going from one version to the other. One other fact.  If youi have an older version and install a 2010 version they can install as separate installs and work together or on ours it gave us the option of uninstalling the older portions of office that came on the new office.  (Wife had office pro older version, in... I understand that if a user installs Open Office on a machine with conventional Office 97-2003 that Open Office will use its own suite of products for each application. (Unless the user ops to use Office to open the applications by unchecking the corresponding application boxes during Open Office's installation.) But if a user chooses Open Office as the default for applications on a system that also has Office 2007 on it, how does Open Office deal with this if the OO applications remain checked as the default?

Does the current version of OO even understand how to DEAL with the new Office 2007? I understand that OO can not read docx documents, which is the default for Word 2007, (although this can be easily changed back to doc.) I found out that Open Office 3.0, scheduled for release this fall, will be able to read docx documents. What's so great about docx docs anyway?

Using my example, assume this situation on a new Windows Vista machine. (fresh installs of each program or Office 2007 OEM (factory installed.) What behavior would be expected here?

Ok, so i want everyones impressions on the various Office Suites.

I personally if i had hte money would go for the Microsoft Office Pro series. I for one, think MS Word is one of the most refined word processing applications avalible. And coming a very close second is Open Office. I find my self having many problems trying to do somthing in Word, or Word crashing, so i switch over to my trusty free Open Office.

As for Corel and WordPerfect, my experiance is that it is way over priced, and is basically on the level of "word pad".

I am attempting to have the company i work for tranition from MS Office to Open Office, but just for a control i thought i might throw in Corel.

So what are your guy's and gal's thoughts on the various office apps?

Answer:MS Office vs. Open Office vs. Corel WordPerfect Office

Openoffice is an extemely close second to MS-office and that is for one thing

Calc's graphing wizzard: It is horrendous. As an engineer I need to admend graphas add new plots... and it is soo hard with openoffice

There is suppose to be a more MS-wizzard with OO-2.1 so until then Openofffice is 2nd
When the new wizzard is shipped it takes first place very quickly and by a signifcant margin

Last time when i have the computer in the repair, and i take it home i was unable to launch OFFICE 2007 from the start menu it says that cant find a main executable files of apps included so i set it. From that moment my word 2007 is launching every time i start the computer a click on someone shortcut of application not only office shortcut, for example when i click on Internet explorer shortcut pinned in the startmenu it lauch a word a show me table with the selection of decoding the file iexplore.exe but when i open file folder where is it placed and click on it, Internet Explorer will launch. So all apps are do this when the office is installed but when not nothing happens all is working normal and also icons are normnal.

Just putting this here in case anyone needs it - including me.
Second time I've had this problem, and it took me ages to sort it out (i.e. find solution in the Internet) - both times!! :-o
Trying to Insert a Symbol in Word - panel opens, but can't click on anything. Succeeded by tabbing to other buttons in the panel, then tabbing back into symbol area. After that, arrow keys can be used to select symbol.
Problem is a mouse setting. I have Nvidia mouse option set to "automatically activate window under cursor". When I turn this off, the problem ceases.
Problem can also be caused by Tweak UI X-mouse.

Answer:Solution: Insert Symbol not working in Word and other Office Apps

Nvidia has a mouse option? Where is it found? What nVidia driver version is this?

I've never seen any mouse-related settings in the nVidia software on my Windows XP system with a GeForce FX 5500 video card.

I just tried inserting symbols with Word 2003 and had no problem using the mouse to click on a symbol to insert it.

Good Evening Everyone,

I have a few questions concerning the Installation of 2010 Office. I know that I have to uninstall Office 2007. I have no clue on how to save or where to save my documents from Office 2007. The documents consist of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and a few various folders. Should I from the Start Menue click on Documents select all and copy. Where should I place this copy? Can It be left on my hard drive? After I install Office 2010 can I then copy the "Document File" and place in Documents. Will all the files end up in the proper place for their programs, Word files go to Word, Excel goes to Excel so on and so forth. Thank you so much for all your help and cooperation. It is greatly appreciated. I hope I described my situation correctly. I look forward to hearing from you.

Answer:2010 Office Professional Plus to Replace 2007 Office Small Business

But you don't have to uninstall Office 2007 to upgrade to 2010. That's the general rule as you can generally upgrade from lower SKUs to higher SKUs (Small Business to Pro Plus). As far as saving your documents, you can really save them wherever you like on your hard drive or on any CD or flash drive if you wish to do so. As far as file types, after 2010 is installed, they should all register properly for their programs so that Word documents open in Word, Excel Documents in Excel, etc.

Though if you have all of you documents already saved within "Documents" or "My Documents" or some other folder you've set aside and you want to uninstall 2007 before upgrading to 2010, the documents themselves will be retained when you uninstall, you just won't be able to really do much with them until you install 2010.

Does anyone know if there is a way to find and install the DIW?

I found it to be a very usefull tool for things like passwords and product keys etc.

Answer:Office 2010 is great BUT it's missing MS Office Document Image Writer

It is not missing. It is just that there is nothing out there that uses the newest version. Go under Control Panel>Devices and Printers. You will see the Microsoft XPS Document Writer. That is the same thing.

i remember with windows xp and office, you could go to a different part of the microsoft windows update website in Internet Explorer, and it would prompt you with ActiveX to allow updates for Office, and after you did that then when you went to the normal windows (xp) update site there would be a whole other section of updates for microsoft office available. That was with office 2007 anyway.

i use a dell restore cd for windows 7 professional, on a dell pc obviously, to install win7 from scratch.
I can do windows updates no problem.
I have microsoft office 2010 professional plus with a valid license key, these are provided by my IT dept.
Office installs fine, during the install i can go through the options and install excel, powerpoint, all shared tools, and so on. Once installed, it works fine. There is no service pack installed at this point.

From here if I go windows update, I never see anything for office.
From within office, Microsoft Word file menu help for example, it shows office is activated and if i click on check for updates there it then opens an IE window which says updates can be done from start menu - programs - windows update. If i do that, it's a normal windows operating system update and I get nothing for office.

I have manually downloaded from microsoft, Office 2010 SP1 and SP2, and have installed either one.
When i go to the help menu it then shows office 2010 SP # so the service pack seems to have installed no problem. But I still never see any upd... Read more

Answer:not showing office updates thru windows update for office 2010 win7

You mean what's called Microsoft Update. If you go in to the settings in Windows Update, do you have this checked:

I have Office 2013 Pro Plus, but the click-to-run version which updates itself and is not part of Windows Update. But I don't think there's a click-to-run version for 2010 Pro Plus so that is probably not the issue here.

My MS Office files have generic icons, and when I open them, Windows asks me which program to use. Office 2010 isn't even on the list. A trial version of Office 2007 came with my laptop. I downloaded the Office 2010 beta, then uninstalled 2007. Since I uninstalled the old Office, all my Office files are no longer associated with Office, and there seems to be no way to remarry them. Office 2010 (beta) doesn't appear in the default programs control panel. The only way I can open those files is to open Word/Excel/etc, and File>Open. I feel like this should be simple. Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: Cannot associate Office 2010 (beta) with Office file types

Did you uninstall 2007 after you installed 2010?
If so you messed things up and you need to do a repair. Open Word, then the Office button, and then Word Options.
There on the Resources area, run diagnostics and do a repair.

since I installed SP1 for Office 2010 I have problems with opening some (not all!) older Word documents created with Word 2003 (*.doc). I get a message that Word can't read the document and it is probably corrupt.

On a other client (same OS, Office 2010 without SP1) I can open the same document without difficulty.

Has anyone an idea?

Thank a lot

Answer:Office 2010 SP1: Problem with opening Word 2003 documents

Hello curuska, welcome to the forum.

Are the two computers accessing the exact same document from the same location, or is the same file saved to their own local disk?

A quick test to try:
Open Word, select File?> Open
Choose the corrupted file (but don?t open it yet)
You will notice that next to where it says ?Open?, there is a little drop-down arrow. Click on this and change the option to ?Open and Repair?, then click on it.

I am running Office 2010 and for some reason the Quick Text works perfectly on Word but in Outlook the option is greyed out.

Anyone know why this might be, they are the same version from the same office installation but I cant see why it would work in one but not the other. Emails are created in HTML, could that be it?

Answer:Office 2010 Quick Text works in Word but not Outlook

Is that the same as quick parts?

This is a question about Word 2010. I have created a problem for myself by accidentally DELETING the Word Shortcut from my desktop and from Start / All Programs / Microsoft Office. I had also created a desktop shortcut from these entries under Start. I did this before inadvertently deleting the Work icon from the "folder" under "Start" AND from the mirrored Folder on the desktop which contains an icon for EVERY OTHER Office application except Word.

Where can I go on my system, or elsewhere to find and "object" upon which I can "right-click" to create a Word icon that I can hopefully restore to the above 2 folders and at least one other location?

Thank you,

Answer:M/S Office: Recover deleted icon for Word 2010 - running Win 7, 64-bit

The executable file for Word is located at the following location:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

Once under this you can find the executable file named "WINWORD" and this will launch Microsoft Word. To have this as a desktop link you can simply right click it > send to > desktop and then rename the shortcut when it is on your desktop.

Hopefully this is what you were asking for.

Important note: The path is dependent on if you have multiple hard drives and this file will, of course, be under the hard drive you have office 2010 installed on.

When ever I click on an Office (.doc) file or an Excel (.xls) file they take about 20 or 30 seconds to open, the same when I try to close. Also if I right click to delete one of those files, it takes forever to get the popup window to delete or what ever I would like to do. I have read over and over again this has to do with Outlook, which I do not have or use. Any Ideas?? I have run adware, spybot, spyware blaster, AVG and AVAST virus. NO HELP :
