Changed computer cases, now computer won't turn on

Question: Changed computer cases, now computer won't turn on

Hi all.
I moved out of a 14-year-old case (Gateway) and into an Ultra brand Gladiator mid-tower.

I have an EVGA nForce 650i Ultra Motherboard, and a "Power Up" brand 450-Watt power supply.

The setup worked fine in the old case, though Windows was freezing regularly after 15 minutes. I figured that was related to the hard-drive, since it wasn't tightly mounted, and I wasn't using enough cooling fans. So I got a new case and cannabalaized a fan from an old computer.

The power outlet and cord are good, and I swapped out the power supply with a 230 watt unit, and pulled the switch from the old case, but neither powered on the computer. Nothing seems out of the ordinary with the switch on the case I bought.

Did I buy a defective unit? Is there something I'm missing or should try again? Something else? Thanks for the help.

Preferred Solution: Changed computer cases, now computer won't turn on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Changed computer cases, now computer won't turn on

Have you considered that going from a 450 psu to only a 230 might have something to do with it?

Is the motherboard shortening out by any part of it touching the case?

Hello, I recently changed cases because my video card did not fit. In the process of changing cases my power supply got really hot after I pressed the power button (nothing turned on). Is there any help I can get?

Answer:I changed cases and now my computer won't turn on.

Hi Frodolaggins, and welcome to TSG.

One possibility is that you did not properly use insulating hardware when mounting the motherboard in the new case. This could result in one or more of the power supply outputs shorting out to the case.

I was hoping to get some advice from "those who know", on this subject. I'm so new it hurts!

Ok so I'm building my first Computer and have settled with an ASUS P5E Motherboard, but I don't know what kind of case to buy!?! Can I just pick up any old case? does it depend on the Motherboard? does it depend on anything else???

P.S. My system specs are based on the PC that I "want" to build, NOT on one that I currently have.

Answer:Computer cases... Which one?

Mobo's are based on a form factor. Your mobo will probably be atx form factor or mini atx form factor. Easiest thing to do is go for an atx form factor case then you will have plenty of room.

Question: Computer cases

I like to see myself as computer idoit not knowing much till i do it once so i like to ask first. I want to switch my computer case out for one that looks better and so on. I have a sony vaio that i change the graphics card and installed a wireless interet card into also. When looking at cases is there anything i should keep in mind about sizes and how hard will switching everthing over be.

Answer:Computer cases

The Sony VAIO is the computer you're talking about, right? Frankly, I think this is a goofy idea. Nevertheless, if you really want to do this, I believe you need to confirm that the Sony does not have proprietary components (motherboard, power supply, etc.) that will not fit in a standard ATX case. I don't know the answer to that. You might post the exact model of your Sony. Perhaps someone can help with that additional info.

Heres my problem, since i got my sister a newer pc i took her old hp pavillion pentium 2 celeron off her hands. now my intentions with this were tunring it into a little router/server but i really didnt like having to work on it becasue the case was incredibly small and clutered so i decided ide switch it to a much bigger case i had laying aorund. so i take everything out and move it into the new case with all the orignal parts except for the switch i plug it in then press the switch and i get nothing yet oddly when i plug the network card in the light shows up as if its powered on. so i figured it must be a bad switch so i pull out the original switch basically destroying the case and mod it into the new case and for some reason that is beyond me it still refuses to power on. now i know the jumpers are not in the incorrect place since it is the same switch and they are put in the same way in fact with how it is i cant put it in the wrong place as it is all melded into one unit. i have no idea why the computer wont turn on and ide really appreciate and help i can get.

My system is presently built into a flat desktop case which will only take a power supply which is less than 135mm deep, which restricts the power supply to below 300 watts. A normal ATX power supply measures 150mm deep. I do prefer this type of desktop case as it is less clumsy, and easy to work with, but I would like to increase the power supply. I did modify a similar case, by fitting an extra base on it to allow a normal ATX power supply to be fitted, but for some reason normal ATX power supplies of greater power do not appear to work with the case. It could be something to do with the wiring on the case. I have searched for a similar type case, which actually takes a normal ATX power supply, by searching the internet, and, although I have found numerous such cases on United States websites, I cannot find any british company who sell such cases. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I recently purchased a nVidia GeForce GTX 260 for my HP Pavilion a6235x PC, and I'm left feeling less than satisfied. My current case and layout is not ideal for such a large card, and the GPU temperature at idle has been around 51 C (not what I would like it to be). So, after doing a bit of searching, I've come across the idea of installing a new case with more space and fans to keep the card (and other hardware) cool. The case I'm looking at happens to be the Antec 900 (fits my budget).

Take a look at the case if you want, I'd love to hear your opinions.

But my real question is, how difficult is it for a beginner-intermediate user like me to remove all the hardware from my current case and install it in a new one? I've done some work with the hardware in the past (Installed a new PSU, multiple graphic cards, network cards, optical drives etc.), but I've never done anything with the motherboard. Would you recommend this choice to someone like me?

By the looks of it I should be able to handle the job, but that's just from watching videos. Do any of you have tips or recommendations I could use to help me with this task? Any help is greatly appreciated, and my thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.

I may have just discharged a significant amount of static onto the front part of one of the metal side panels on my case. I trust this was grounded to the power supply, even though it entered the front and not the back. Am I correct? The comp was on, BTW.

Answer:Computer Cases and Static

When you touch any metal part of the case you ground yourself, so the static would of gone straight to the ground, and not damage anything.

Yesterday, I suddenly began getting different, larger, and bolded fonts displayed in just a few cases. One is warning messages (opening a file could be bad, and stuff like that) that are displayed when I am using Outlook. The other is in CCleaner. Most characters are displayed correctly in other programs, but in just a few they are strange. The first strange thing that happened was that a certain font disappeared from my Fonts folder. I was able to install it again, but I haven't found a way to get the other problem fixed. The only things I did before I noticed the problem was install Bioshock.I also upgraded my graphics card driver (NVIDIA). I tried rolling back to the previous driver, but that didn't solve the problem.Any ideas why might be happening? Hi, I'm very new to building my own computer from scratch but I decided to give it a try for my new PC. I've shopped around for all the parts I plan to inculde in my build but one thing confuses me. I use a lot of USB devices, from my keyboard to my mouse to my usb internet adapter, but whenever I view a case on say, Newegg or such I can't tell how many USB ports the cases have. So, my utterly noob question is do computer cases come back usb ports as default? Whenver I read the specs about the cases on Newegg they only mention the front ports. The case I've had my eye on is the NZXT Tempest 210.

Lol, this might sound so retarted. But, i stayed up all day. I dont know how y'all get whne doing so but get hyper. Wanting to do something, like clean my room, re-arange furniture etc.. (probally from the large amounts of grain.)
Anyways. So i went to wal-mar, got some primer and a can of RED spray paint.
Cant remember the name, but its the brand that starts with a k, and is real popular. Oh, i also bought some sand paper. I totally stripped down my other computer, case and all. Because this is a case to a older computer, but it was customed build so its a pretty nice case. So i took it all apart. Cleaned and sanded everything (exept the plastic.) Cleaned it again, and painted it. The right panel is kinda bumpy but who cares, its against the desk so no one can see that. Then put all the stuff from theother case (the good pc in it)
I only had one problem. The power button connectors didnt work when i had it hooked up to the motherboard. So i had to use the one fro mthe other case. so i removed the usb port on the front panel and ran it through there, its hanging out in the front. I need to fix that. but over all it came out pretty darn good. All i gotta do now is put the other back together. I dont know if the motherboard will fit in it. It's a HP pavilion a520n. I also have a Antec 500W smartpower psu on the way. 1GB 2x512 CORSAIR memory on the way,

many people on other forums say that aluminum cases keep your computer cooler than steel cases because supposedly aluminum cases act like a giant heatsink? is this even founded or even true?

air would not be as good as a conductor of heat compared to two metals in contact. i mean if an aluminum case were to a better heatsink, it would have to touch the board or something to cool it. if air was better at conducting heat, would not we have a cpu HSF touch the air above the cpu instead of the HSF having direct contact with a thermal compund and CPU?

everything else being equal, is aluminum really that much better than other case materials with cooling?

Answer:i have a question regarding aluminum computer cases.

many people on other forums say that aluminum cases keep your computer cooler than steel cases because supposedly aluminum cases act like a giant heatsink?Click to expand...

I dont think that the kind of metal for your case makes allot of differens. Its better to place a small fan to blow the hot air out.
The impact of an alliminium case in staid of a normal one would be so minimal its hardly worth the extra cost to buy alliminium.

i mean if an aluminum case were to a better heatsink, it would have to touch the board or something to cool it.Click to expand...

the bord touching the case would be a very bad idea , metal conducts electricitie! Anyhow its not the bord itself that needs cooling, its the cpu and northbridge.

everything else being equal, is aluminum really that much better than other case materials with cooling?Click to expand...

aluminium conducts indeed better but for a case it would simply be more efficient to place a extra fan or to just make some more hole's in your case.

First of all, I'd just like to say that I'm a blind man in a dark room when it comes to hardware. So please, keep it simple =[ I might not be able to understand a lot of the lingo.

Anyway, seeing as to how my computer is now out of commission, there is little information that I can help give you guys. However, here is what I do know:

Specs (Incomplete):

The mother board is a Dell Vostro 400 (from when I googled the serial). The processor is a QuadCore. There are 4 gigs of RAM (DDR2), and I'm going to assume the HDD and DVD are insignificant. The OS is Windows XP Home 32. The graphics card is as of now a GeForce 9800GTX.

Now, a summary of the situation:

I bought the tower 2nd hand from some IT guy. It ran perfectly for a while, but the graphics card eventually burned out. I bought a replacement, but that one burned out as well, as did the one after that. So eventually, I realized that they were probably burning out because there was a lot of dust being taken in. I suspected it was due to a section of the back panel that was missing on the old tower case. So I ordered a new one online, a nice gaming case that also had a huuuuge fan on one of the side panels (I swear to god, it's like 7" or something). Then, it arrived...and I had no idea how to take everything from one and put it into the other.

At first, I didn't want to mess with it on my own. I took it to different computer shops and asked around...everyone charges more than $90, even up t... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] Computer failing POST test after swapping cases

The standoffs(Brass Spacers under the motherboard) are not always the same across case brands and models. They should be installed onto the case first and then the board placed on top.

Dell uses a lot of proprietary motherboards and cases meaning that the boards do not always fit correctly into retail standard atx/matx cases.

I think the fist step should be to remove the board disassemble the screws and standoffs, (did the new case come with standoffs?)

4 beeps on a Vostro is a memory error>

Try it with 1 stick of ram in the slot closest to the CPU, make sure it fully seated don't rely on the clips to show that it is all the way into the slot.

Do all the ports on the back of the motherboard line up with the I/O plate in the rear of the case?

What brand and model case did you get?

I would also consider doing the bench test if using the one stick and it still won't post>

Hello, first time poster seeking some fresh ideas,

Ok this started when I received my new case and power supply in the mail 3 days ago, I unplugged all my peripherals, transferred everything to the new case, and went about plugging everything in (i must say i scratched my motherboard in this process which led me to a decision I will talk about shortly.)

Alright, well after I finished installing everything, I pushed power... no post. I turned it off, checked the connections, no post, freaked out, unplugged everything, dropped down to all different levels of barebone starts, using my old power supply, still no posting, this led me to believe that my motherboard had been damaged.

So, I went ahead and ordered a new motherboard, got it in today, went about the whole process again, still no posting, no beeps, no nothing, trying this with both power supplies, etc. Well, I am not sure where to go on to now, I don't think its the cpu, but am not unwilling to get a new one, I just do not want to get a new one and find out that the same problem still exists and do not want to take my build into any repair shops until i have exhausted all options on my own, I simply do not have another build lying around to go and plug pieces in to figure out what works and what doesnt.

My specs:

cpu: amd phenom II triple core 2.6ghz
Mboard: ASUS M4A77TD (previous mboard: asus m4a78t-e)
Vcard: evga geforce gtx 260
ram: g. skill 4x2gb ddr3 1333

Answer:Changed Cases/power supplies, bios no longer posting

If you have already reseated everything to no avail. I would suggest trying to put the rig back together in the old case. If it powers on, then there is something wrong with the wires or power button in the new case. (I really don't put much faith in this theory, but it's something to try).

Hi, I have a problem with windows XP. Everytime I turn off my computer by clicking on "turn off computer," I receive an error message popup that states "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be closed." After that pop-up message, the computer freezes for about a minute and goes back to its normal format (desktop) and the computer DOES NOT TURN OFF.

How do I turn off my computer without unplugging the computer? I try "ctrl+alt+del" to go to the windows task manager to "shut down" the computer but..the computer restarts again and doesnt turn off. Do I have a virus or a windows explorer problem? and how do i fix it? thank you

I use my laptop for school and, by keeping it on power saving mode, usually get through two school days without charging my laptop. Ever since I've downloaded Windows 10, (1) my computer doesn't shut off all the way when I close it, which drains the battery, and (2) every time I charge it, it turns off the power saving mode, which is really annoying. This is especially annoying when I don't notice it isn't on and my battery drains even faster. Is there any reason it won't turn off? Is there a setting I can use to keep the power saving mode on at all times?

Answer:Why won't my computer turn off all the way and why can't my computer stay on power saving mode?

Your system might have a virus, try to scan using Malwarebytes, Superspyware , Trojan-Killer. Restart your system then try to download Hitman Pro then Run it. Then optimize your system using Ccleaner. Hope this would help.

My sister brought me her computer to fix it for her, said it was running really slow. When I first started the computer up and logged into Windows, I found a blue screen with a warning on it, "Warning Spyware Detected On Computer Please Install Antivirus Or Spyware To Clean Computer". I knew then that she had gotten some malware somewhere. I had to press ctrl-alt-delete and manually run the explorer bar, and then I got an error stating that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have been working around this and have searched the internet for ways to fix this malware problem. I have downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ran that, removing over 270 Trojans. But to no avail, the blue screen with the warning is still there and you still have to run explorer.exe manually. I am having trouble with a 6 month old IBM R51 laptop - when I select TURN OFF COMPUTER from within Windows and the START button - the computer sometimes hangs and will not shut down. I have to press the power button to reset. Any idea what could be causing this?

Answer:Computer Hangs When Turn Off Computer Selected In Windows

Welcome to BC! There are many possible causes, however there is one common cause. Often XP's exit sound file gets corrupt and if it does not run then XP won't shut down. I am not sure based on what you have told us so far if this is the issue or not, but let's see:Go to:Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tabUnder Program Events scroll down until you see Exit Windows. Highlight Exit Windows by clicking on it once. Then under Sounds choose None. Click Apply and finally OK. Reboot if possible, or shut down computer and restart manually. Once it is up and running, shut down computer by going to Start > Turn Off Computer. See if it will shut down on it's own now.If it does, the only difference will be that you will not longer hear the 2 seconds of music that XP usually plays as it shuts down.

i also recorded a video of how its sounds like:
so please help/B]

Answer:Solved: computer beeping sounds when i turn on computer

There are three possibilities here, all related to your memory.

1) You have forgotten to fit your memory back in.
2) Your memory isn't properly seated in its slot(s)
3) You have killed your memory because of not following antistatic procedures.

I'm suspecting it is either 2 or 3.

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

Hi TheRealDanny.

The crash dump (a Stop 0x3B one) is not saying anything in detail about the probable cause of the BSOD).

Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.
If it does not show any error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

Answer:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

First of, my monitor exhibited signs of flickering during start-up, but only minor ones and would just stop at the 'Welcome' screen of windows so I didn't give it much thought. Iv'e been using it with the cpu the same time I bought the monitor.

But after some time, the flickering got worse. It went from 1-2 second interval flickers to a whole 10 seconds of blackness before it showed anything.

Now,Iv'e got a new cpu but still using the old monitor. After a day or so, the monitor exhibited the first symptoms of my first cpu, so I just dismissed it. But after a week, It got a hell worse, before I even start-up my computer, the monitor doesn't show Analog/Digital at the top-left corner of the screen. PLUS my cpu keeps restarting after I pushed the ON button after 10 seconds or so.

My question, Is the monitor responsible for the restart and what could be the reason for the flickering?

Thanks for a fast reply.

Answer:My Computer monitor doesn't show anything when I turn my computer on.

Welcome Pokeman5 to the windows 7 forums.

The graphics card might be your culprit. Please update your system configuration settings under user cp so that others can maybe help you.
Usually the monitor won't stop your machine from booting. The graphic card most likely be the cause.

There is also the possibility that your power supply could be defective or going bad. Lots of possibilities.

I just got this HP pavilion 762n last year. Now whenever I turn the computer on it won't respond(Goes to a Blank Black Screen) and the only way I can make the computer respond is to go to safe mode and UN-install the Graphic Card, then restart the computer back again. Once I've done that the computer would work, but I can't watch Videos or play Video Games on the computer. There also would be these little blue lines on the computer screen (Sometimes their would be alot of the lines and sometimes the lines would be made by the trail of my mouse).

I've tried lots of ways to fix the computer. I've tried:

- Un-installing and re-installing my graphic card (Nvidia Geforce4 MX420 graphics card with TV-Out) that came with the computer.

- Rolling Back My Graphic Card.

- Updating My Drive from Windows Update.

- I've tried using a program that test my computer and tells me whats wrong with it. It said I got a problem with something like the VIDEO MEMORY CARD and I don't know what that is.

Is the Only way I can fix this is to buy another Graphic Card. I do not want to waste $200.00. Please Help Me!

Thank You.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

Hello there, recently, I've been having an issue with my PC. Randomly, all peripherals (Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, etc.) turn off, but the computer stays on, and I need to turn it off by flipping the power off, and once I turn it back on, it boots normally and such. Like I said, the times this happens seem to be completely random, though I believe it has only happened at night, but that may be just coincidence. I have used virus scans, and nothing has come up, so I don't believe that's the issue. I haven't made any significant hardware changes recently either. Does anyone have an idea of what could be happening?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Computer peripherals turn off but not computer itself?

Get into the motherboards bios by pressing a key noted when you first power up the computer. Look for "hit F? for setup" or something like that. Reset the bios to defaults

I've read somewhere the icon is stored in shell32.dll Could it have been changed.

Some things i've tried:

Changing resolution

All other Icons appear normal. Also if I make a My Computer shortcut in a folder it appears as it normally does, It is just the top left of the folder opened when you open my computer, and the desktop icon. Any ideas?

I have a Vista PC 64 bit with SP2. I've had it for a few years and for the whole time, the computer clock did not show the day of the week. I liked it like that. However, when I went back to my computer last night, it suddenly did show the day of the week and it's taking up so much room that it changes the size of the taskbar. I went into control panel > regional and language settings and removed the day of the week from anywhere I could find it, with no effect. If I have to, I will hide the clock, but I'd really rather keep it.

If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it!

Answer:Computer clock changed its look

It's not that the clock has changed, it's that the size of the taskbar has changed and being wider now shows information that was always there but hidden because it was only one line wide.

Click on the edge of the taskbar until the mouse turns into a double-sided arrow and drag it down until the taskbar is once again only one line wide. The clock and all else should return to normal. If you want, you can then right click on the taskbar and click "lock taskbar" to prevent this from happening again (and unlock it only when you want to make changes).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I bought a DVD-RW today and pulled the old CD-Re-writer out of the Base-unit.I plugged the new dvd one in the same as the old was (IDE/power cables etc) and after re-booting got no 'beep' and a red message saying about IDE master not being the slave.I went to Boot options and changed the Secondary to Primay and the computer booted fine.

I have no D: drive on the 'my computer' any more (no cd-roms are installing..etc..)

Have I made a massive mistake and buggered the BIOS up or can this problem be sorted without formating/re-installing XP?

btw The secondary/primary option on the Boot options has dissapeared, so I can't change that back.

Answer:Changed CD-rw to DVD-rw, lost CD(DVD) on computer

clear the cmos. then disconnect the DVDRW and its cable and set the jumper via master or slave, depending on how you want it. then boot to windows normally and see if the drive appears. good luck

My daughter came home from college a few weeks ago with a laptop that was acting up. She couldn't seem to connect to our home WiFi network. Her computer would indicate the it was connected with good signal strength, but the IP address was unusual. Now the same thing is happening to my laptop. Is this some type of malware that redirects my computer's IP address?

I'm running XP Home SP3 on a Dell laptop. I have problems whether I use Windows Wireless Network Connection or Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility. Sometimes the laptop automatically connects to my wireless access point correctly, but at some point it changes its IP address from to A reverse DNS search indicates this address is invalid. The router's address is also changed to the new, invalid value. While in this state, I receive indications that my laptop is connected with good signal strength, but in fact I cannot send or receive anything.

I've tried forcing the connection by setting the Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) Properties with the correct IP addresses and subnet mask, which provides partial relief. For some reason, everything looks normal but my connection comes and goes.

Is there some kind of malware that resets the computer's IP address? I've run McAfee VirusScan, PCTools Spyware Doctor, and Windows Defender, but haven't found anything.

Hi all,

So I was trying to setup a network attached storage device on my home network and everything was going fine. I was installing apps on the NAS (Synology ds212j) and I was just setting up the cloud storage portion of the NAS and was installing the software on my computer to sync files from anywhere on the NAS. I wasn't pleased with the default computer name and decided to change it to a something a little more generic (i.e. MyName-Laptop) to be recognized more easily if I allow others access to the storage. Ever since I changed the name my PC has been running HORRIBLY slow, both applications installed on the PC as well as web browsing and even opening the control panel. I assumed I had severed some kind of file connections for applications I was running, so I:
1) changed the computer name back to the default- didn't work
2) ran a system restore for the previous day- didn't work
3) ran CCleaner to clean out any temporary files, etc.- didn't work
4) I'm currently running Microsoft Security Essentials

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Ben

PS It's Win 7 SP1 and I can send you a file for the Speccy screenshot if you would like. Thanks!

Answer:Computer Name Changed- Everything Slowed

Thank you for your reply, but I'm afraid I wasn't being entirely clear. The issues I'm having with the general speed on the computer arose when I changed the name of PC (left click on Computer>Properties>Change Settings> Change [computer name]). I'm not sure what you're referring to with the credit card, billing info, etc.

Thanks again!

Thanks so much for reading this
I will try to give as much detail as possible(I am new to this so will try to follow the guidelines) firstly just to let you know my computer does not have much disk space i am not sure if this has caused the problem but have ordered a potable hard drive so i can move some of my files when it comes.
when i started my computer this morning after entering my password it showed a blue screen which stated it was loading my personalized setting (not the usual one i get) it then said it could not do something (sorry to be vague but cant remember the actual words) I thought it could be a space issue so decided to delete some photos. the home screen has changed completely and when i tried to open my documents it said the path didnt exist, i then went through my computer and found my photos. i pressed delete but they didnt go to recycle bin as it is empty, i restarted the computer and the same thing happened. i opened internet explorer and it said welcome to internet explorer 8. my homepage and all my settings are different. Am i being daft and this is just an update???

Answer:Please help computer has completely changed!

Hello molliemoo060304 and welcome,

If you look at this file path, you will see that another user was created by Windows:

c:\documents and settings\[B]administrator.your-44c319464b.000[/B

]This typically happens when there is a problem loading your existing user profile.

This is most likely a problem you'll need to post in the Windows XP Support section, but before we do, is there any reason you suspect malware to be the cause? Did any of your onboard tools detect anything prior to this happening?

Also, please run dds.scr again. It produces 2 reports - I would like to see the 2nd report it produces, named Attach.txt. Please post that in your next reply.

I was working on setting up a PC for network usage with the understanding that it hadn't been used much previously. Unfortunately I found that it had a PC name already existing on the network and went to change the PC name and IP address as needed for a static IP environment

However, after selecting to "restart" the system never rebooted up and I cannot seem to access the CD drive to place a restore CD or basically do anything with the PC.

Any ideas on what happened?

I've unplugged the computer and waited a few seconds to plug it in. Once replugged it returns to having the basic lights on it blink about once every few second and appears to be otherwise disabled.

Is it possible that there was a HardDrive failure of some sort?

Just found out that the P6 and P4 connectors are inserted into a drive but P5 is not. I'm not sure if that is helpful but I figured it significant enough to update this question post

So, I'm a big doofus. Big problems.

I bought my laptop from work a while back when I got laid off. I've been using it for a while with my own login credentials, when suddenly this morning I had the urge to make it 'my own'.

Here was my major screw up:

1. I went into my computer settings, and changed the computer name.

2. I changed the connection setting from Domain (which was set to my old company domain) to Workgroup - I typed in a new name for a home work group, and received a 'welcome to the workgroup' message.

3. I changed my old generic login name (user name) to my first inital and last name. I also changed the permissions to Administrator. The old name was already set up to be password protected, and I did not change this setting, or change the password that was set. My thinking was that I should change, rather than add a new user, because new applications I installed were aligned with this user. I think this was the big mistake.

I then received a message that I had to reboot, so, I did. (DOH!)

When the login screen appeared, it still had the old username as the default. I changed this to the new user name, tried the old password, no luck. I've tried every combination of new and old info I can think of, but can't log in to the computer.

Because it was a company computer, there is no default Administrator account, so I can't log in as Administrator.

Any advice? or am I completely hosed?

Try booting to safe mode (hold down F8 while booting till you get a startup menu - choose to start 'Safe Mode with Networking'. No third-party devices will work in safe mode, but it should allow you to get to Control Panel and change colors back to 16bit (medium) or 32bit. The startup menu also gives you 'Last Known Good Configuration' which may be all you need to do (try Last Known Good ....first, if no joy try safe mode with networking.

Now for most if not all of us, Windows 7 has brought upon performance improvements, and course the new taskbar bring some new features that modify I our handling of applications, but has windows 7 changed anything in particular in how you use your computer?

For me there are at least a couple of things I do differently now:

I have the taskbar on top.
Never thought I would actually leave it like that, but I have. It just looks nice with seven I guess.

I run many more apps at the same time. Before, I would tend to close apps and reopen them if I needed to, rather than have several open windows in the background, sacrificing performance.

I rarely maximize windows anymore. Before, I would maximize almost everything. But now, thanks to the convenience of Aero snap, I can simply drag the bottom/top edge of a window to the bottom/top edge of the usable space, and it automatically vertically resizes the window. I prefer it alot this way, as it allows me to keep track of my contact lists while still browsing the internet or watevs. Not to mention it looks prettier and works more smoothly with aero peek.

I'm also making use of keyboard shortcuts within the OS more, as now there are more useful ones of these.

Overall, I feel more efficient, which at the end of the day, should be what an OS does.

Anything you've noticed?

ok I had a stick of 512 and a 128mb ram in my computer and it worked great, another computer in the house's moniter went out and I took a stick of 512 out of it and put in mine in place of the 128mb and tried to boot. Only the fans came on and nothing on the monitors. I took out the new 512 and put the 128 back in and booted and mother board beeped at me ( no I dont know the sequence of beeps and have no manual about motherboard) so I took the 128 back out and tried to boot useing only the 512 which has worked in the past, now only the fans will come on and still nothing on the monitors and no beeping, I thought I might have put too much ram in too old of a machine so I tried to reset the mobo by removeing the battery waiting 30 seconds and replaceing it but that did no good. I also belive the new stick of ram I tried to put in had more pins than the one I have in the comp already, it came out of a slimline computer thats mother board is much smaller, but the ram looked the same at first glance. think I may have fried my computer please help.

Answer:Changed Ram And Computer Died

One thing to try would be to turn off your system, unplug the power cord (or turn off your power strip), then hold the power button down for a good 40 seconds or so. If you listen close, you may hear a high pitched whirring sound. This is known as a 'power drain', and is a good thing to do always before and after installing pc parts. Often it will bring dead-seeming pc's back to life.

A couple things we'd need to continue further, though. Your current specifications, including your computer model (if it applies), your motherboard model if you know it, the speed of the ram (both old and new), whether or not the computer was plugged in during installation, and if you can recall, how many beeps you heard.

Installing ram can be difficult, especially on older motherboards. Sometimes you have to use two thumbs, one on heac side, and push quite hard to get both sides to snap into place. Try using that older 512 again, in it's original slot, and make sure both sides snap in and lock. Let me know how it goes.

Quote from the video:
"I downloaded a crack so I could get it for free."

That's a problem. The fact that uTorrent is missing is more of a blessing in this case than a curse. You need to stop illegally downloading software and cracks or these things will continue to happen to you.

You also need a good backup plan so you have several copies of your important files.

As for your files, have you tried actually searching the entire drive for your files? Open C:\ -> Users and look for an old copy of your profile.

I hope you get your files back, and I also hope you make some changes in how you use your computer so this doesn't happen again.

Hey guys/girls,

So I logged onto my computer earlier today and it came up with an error right after entering in my username and password. The error said something about changing my account to a temporary guest accout or something like that because a domain was unavaiable or something like that.

I cannot access any of my files even in my own account (b/c it has been changed to a guest) even though I still enter my own username and password.

I did try to reboot at last known good config but that did no good.

What can I do to change my account back?

This is a laptop I got thought my school (WIT) and they do have an admin account on this laptop. I did concider bringing the laptop to them but they aren't actually techs and will only want to reimage it.

Thanks again and sorry for the long story!

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

Well this just takes the cake. I was always unhappy with Microsoft for linking my computer password, to my Microsoft account. Now here we go. I changed my password with Hotmail. Now I cannot sign in to my computer in my administrator account. (I'm using Win 8.1) I think I changed it yesterday. I put it in sleep mode, and today I restarted it, then found out I couldn't sign in, because it wouldn't take my new password. I know that password is right, because I can use it on the email just fine. I have a very long, and difficult password for Hotmail, and this is one reason I hate that they are linked. I destroyed the old password, after using the new one, and it worked. I guess the Windows 8.1 wants the older password. Why is it not taking my new password? If I have to start all over, I'm gonna be furious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
