Keyboard stops typing text, keys start activating functions/menus

Question: Keyboard stops typing text, keys start activating functions/menus

Hello Bleeping Computer people!

Computer with the problem is a desktop. HP Pavilion Model number a4327c-b. Windows 7.

My problem: Keyboard keys unexpectedly stop tying text and instead, pressing a key, activates a function.

For example typing the F key opens the File menu. Tested with a second keyboard and had the same problem.  Problem started unexpectedly, without warning. Problem occurs when surfing the web and playing free online games at MSN and other popular sites.

Mouse works. Norton Security Suite working.

Temporary fix: Opened the On Screen Keyboard and pinned it to Task Bar. Opening and minimizing the On Screen Keyboard fixes the problem for a few minutes but then the problem reoccurs. Problem seems to reoccur when surfing the web and playing free online games at MSN and other popular sites.

Descriptions: Of how the problem effects these programs:

Outlook: Can’t open New Message. When forwarding an email can’t address it or type text. Keyboard keys act as if they are function keys. For example typing F opens the File Menu. Other keys open other Outlook functions/menus.

Word 2007: Can’t type in a Document. Type F key and Office Button opens.  Other keys activate other Word functions.

Internet Explorer: In all Search boxes, can’t type. F key opens File menu. Other keys effect other menus.

Thank you for any help you can provide,
Craig

Preferred Solution: Keyboard stops typing text, keys start activating functions/menus

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

..random keys "pressing"

hello good people!

it actually started with my music starting do "drag out"- distort - like in Transformers. this gets
fixed by repairing windows but then the other issues began
i'm able to start a browser by logging into another user first, switching user and then in the
second user i can load a browser. i can observe the process of the browser filling in the memory
and then disappearing. this happens with IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera
actually i could open IE but it didn't do much
the internet stopping got fixed by repairing windows again
also i made another installation of windows on another partition
also i recovered default, sam, security, software, system, from the system32\config folder a
couple of times because it was giving me errors with those
i solved the sticky keys issue by using SharpKeys from RandyRants and disabling the shift keys

also it was giving me error with cssauth.exe needing a .dll but i removed it from startup

during the gmer scan it went twice to a blue screen and error caused by uwrdapoc.sys
here i'm posting the gmer scan until a little before the blue screen

Thanks a lot in advance.

I have a compaq laptop cq56 which has some hot keys on the left hand side of the keyboard. the only probem is there is no spacing between them and the normal keys so everytime i go to hit tab, i end up hitting the dvd software key and it launches and is causing me great frustration. these keys are specific for these laptop, not windows. so is there anyway to disable or reassign the keys?

Due to virus, worm,or something bad, I did a full reformat and load of XPpro. Seemed to work fine but I found that the letter "L" did not work. Loaded drivers from an eBay CD but still no "L". Reform and reload OS and now the letter "U" doesn't work. Lucky the install code didn't have an "L" or "U" in it. Keying the "u" opens an accessibility menu.

Haven't tried but am sure and external kybd will work since that's a OS function (isn't it?) Did manage to get network card installed during one effort but at present I have no download capability direct to this machine. Can download and burn on desktop.
Any ideas.

Answer:T8100 keyboard, some keys failed or cause menus to open

Hi

In my opinion you should first try to pinpoint what the problem can be and if there is some malfunction of the keyboard. It will be very interesting to know if there is the same problem with external keyboard.

If you reinstall OS using Recovery CD there should not be any problem except for a defective keyboard. Please try with external keyboard if you have one.

When I use the spacebar / appears. When I press return # appears, when I use the back delete button a [ appears. How can I restore the usual setting?I have done a system restore, switched the laptop on and off. It has not restored the usual keyboard. I have tried all the function keys. Please could someone help me with a solution to restore the keyboard's usual settings. Thanks

Answer:Keyboard typing different keys from what it normally does

This just started suddenly? No spilling of any liquid or other "abuse" of the computer? It sounds to me like the keyboard gets the wrong signals - not even enabling num lock or anything of the kind should result in such behavior - the space bar, return and back key are all pretty much the same on all keyboard-types - unless you've installed some sort of key-remapper (which is highly unlikely, given you've done a system restore) - which makes me wonder - have you run a keyboard test from the BIOS/startup diagnostic? Most likely it's a shot keyboard, given that no abuse has taken place - run the diagnostic test on the keyboard, and see what turns up.

Hello all i have been having a problem off and on with my keyboard on my asus laptop, sometimes when i press the L key i get a/ instead and when i press the o key i get yt instead of O, I don't really know what is wrong with or making it do that, it is annoying. Sometimes when I hold the shift key for a few seconds and turn on the filter keys and then turn them right back off it goes away but comes back later, has anyone else had this problem, or know what i should do to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. I am running windows 7 on the laptop and purchased it new in feb 10

Answer:keyboard not typing right keys

"purchased it new in feb 10"It should still be under warranty...sounds like you have a hardware problem and I would contact them immediately and request service on the laptop. Just make sure to save all your important docs and files before sending it away.Chances are they may reformat your drive and lose all, or they will replace the keyboard and still set it back to a factory installation.Too many people send their laptops off and lose all their valuable files not knowing ahead of time.Good LuckSome HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

I was randomly playing a game, then all of a sudden my keyboard started typing weirdly. Eg. when i type a, e appears and when i type e, L appears. I went on control panel and the keyboard was still set to "English (United States) - US" and the language was still set to English. I tried pressing Ctrl + Shift and that didn't help either, no matter how many times i pressed it. Can someone help please?

Hi

We have an L450D-119 running Windows 7 64bit.

Occasionally, the keyboard simply stops typing. There is no explanation and no repeatable event. It does not seem to be after any repeatable activity like suspend or hibernate, it just seems to happen. A reboot cures the problem.

It is worth noting that when the keyboard has stopped accepting characters the mouse pad and buttons still work.

This is my second L450D-119, the first was returned with 24 hours for the same reason.

It seems this one has always done it to some extent and the user, not me I might add, has simply seen it as an annoyance and rebooting - clearly this is unacceptable.

My choices are fix it or take it back. So by posting on this forum I am hoping to find a resolution but if nothing is forth coming I shall be forced to take it back and this time it will be for a refund and not exchange.

Thank you for your help and any suggestions

Regards

Answer:Satellite L450D-119 - Keyboard just stops typing

Hi,

Have you installed any keyboard/mouse drivers? (for an external Logitech mouse for example)
Maybe there is a 3rd party driver installed that is conflicting.

Also check the Sticky Keys settings. If you hold down some keys, Sticky Keys may activate. Untick "Turn on Sticky Keys"
Win7: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Make the keyboard easier to use

A BIOS Update may also help. You can download the latest BIOS from the Toshiba Website.

My wireless keyboard works fine when I switch on the computer but as the day goes on the characters seem to take more time to "arrive" on the page. Sometimes parts of a word will be missing although I have typed in all the correct characters and I have to use the mouse to click at the insertion point to begin again.
I have changed the batteries in the keyboard - it does not show "low battery levels".
Any ideas please?
Many thanks
Phil

My laptop keeps typing numbers as opposed to letters on certain keys.

I have run my antivirus programme and it is clear ? I am running Windows XP.

Any ideas as to what to do? I have checked the languages and all seems ok there. I have run my spyware and privacy guardian. All reports clear.

Basically, I am now stuck as to what else to try........

Hope someone can help.

Answer:Keyboard typing numers, not letters on certain keys

Hi,

Many laptop keyboards have a section which can be used for numeric data entry only.

These keys are normally just a block of the main QWERTY keyboard and accessed by using a Function key.

You have probably got the keyboard into this "mode"

Hello, I went through the process of cleaning my mouse while the monitor was off and I'm fairly sure I clicked something maybe I shouldn't have but after that the whole keyboard was messed up..

E shows up as ]
D shows up as ''

Esc, start, [ , n, y, I, F1-F12 keys don't register, among a few others..

Things I've tried so I don't waste anyones time.. [Windows 7]
Changed Location, Keyboard Layout (English - US) is the only language
Ctrl - Shift x1/2, Alt - Shift x1/2, and pretty much any other variant I could think of.
Plugged another keyboard in, same thing.
Plugged keyboard in another computer, works like a charm.
Restarted, plugged and unplugged. Uninstalled and tried to update driver..

Nothing worked so far, hopefully you can can make something happen.
Thanks in advance.

I have a Equium L-20, just bought it and every so often it is missing characters while typing, these are random, it isn?t as if certain keys are sticking can go through and type the alphabet and every 2 or 3 times it will miss letters or characters out as if I hadn?t pressed the keys, also the space bar can miss now and again.

Would this be a keyboard fault or software, it?s kind of got me puzzled and almost to point of returning it for a replacement.
During this short post it missed 4 letters out, had to check it and fill in the blanks

Answer:Equium L-20: Keyboard random keys not typing

Hi

Well, I have read some topics about the similar issues in this forum and I think it?s not a keyboard drive problem. In my opinion it?s something wrong with the keyboard hardware or with the cable connection.
I think the best way is to contact the ASP for the detailed informations. If the warranty is valid, all replacements will be done for free.

Thank you.

Dear all, I recently purchansed Lenovo Z500. It has been great but I have had some key board problems. When I browse the Internet or doing some work on Word, the keyboard doesn't let me type. Instead the buttons do other functions, like minimizing or maximizing the current window when I need to type something. It seems like everytime I restart the Windows, it solves the problem. Is there any other way to fix it, or is there a special button I don't know? Or is there a complete list of key functions? I know the function key combination listed in the link below pg29. Hi,

Apologies for what is probably a stupid question.
I have a Tecra A2 and run XP proffesional.
Suddenly some of the keys are typing symbols different to those indicated on the keys.
Pleeeeze tell me how to reset the keyboard to default.

With thanks, Danny.

Answer:Keyboard keys of Tecra A2 typing wrong symbols?

Hi mate,

it could be that you have a wrong keyboard map. A keyboard map is like a draft for your hardware which identfies which char is displayed when you hit a key on your keyboard.
Keyboard maps a depending which language you use so if the symbols on the screen do not match the input of your typing then it could be that a wrong keyboard map is set.

In such case you will have to set another keyboard language.

To change the keyboard map you must do the following:
Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language options -> Click on the Tab "Languages" -> Details -> Choose your input language which matches your keyboard

This is a minor bug and I can correct it easily, but I'm curious if anyone has it.

When I click the thin button at the far right of the taskbar (what is that called anyway? it's the new 'show desktop' button I guess), and then click it again to restore all my windows... I cannot type in the current window. I guess even though it's the front-most window, it's no longer 'in focus'.

With firefox in particular it's annoying. In other apps, I click on the app's window and it's fine. But that doesn't work in firefox, I must click the firefox taskbar button to minimize it, then click it again to maximize it. Only then can I type.

Any fix?

Hello everybody,I've got really strange problem that I never saw before. A month ago I got a ThinkPad E450 and after 20 days the problem with keyboard started. When I was typing, keyboard stops typing, seems like somebody clicked on task bar. So I had to click again on the page to resume typing. I talked to tech support and they told me I can return the laptop because it may has a problem with motherboard. I returned it and ordered a new T450s. I received this one 2 days ago and now I have same problem with this one. I updated all drivers, and nothing installed on the laptop besides Office and Skype.  Has anybody an idea about this problem. Ok...I'm fixing a friend's computer (see log below) and he, just started about a week ago, not being able to type on Internet Explorer...but it works with any other software application AND it works with AOL IM.

I thought it might be a filled cache....so I cleared that and history, cookies, etc....still no go. I thought it might be Internet Explorer, so I downloaded Netscape....same thing happens. I went to Microsoft's website and looked for windows XP updates...still same problem.

This just started happening a week ago.....any thoughts? I was thinking maybe needs updated keyboard drivers or something???

Any help would be appreciated..

Hi there, and thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer! This problem is really frustrating because I have important things I need to do asap and I am prevented from doing them.

EDIT: It seems the problem is exclusive to Firefox... I never use IE so I didn`t think to check until now, but yup, it`s just Firefox.

The problem is my keyboard. I was just posting in a discussion forum and going to hit the square bracket again to quote someone. But I think I hit something at the same time as pressing that key, as I was going for the A key but instead I hit around the shift key. So I think I hit the square bracket key plus the shift key or something around there, at once. Or perhaps a combination of three keys.. or perhaps this has nothing to do with the problem at all.. or for all I know I have a virus (although I have been scanning a lot lately and all seems clean). I recently updated my laptop (Lenovo Z570) to Windows 10. Now whenever I'm trying to type anything (my password to log onto the computer, within a web browser, in a Word doc, etc) it will all of a sudden act as if I clicked somewhere else and doesn't acknowledge what I'm typing anymore. And then a second or two later it will recognize me typing again and allow me to type. It does not pick up where it left off though, it will just resume from whichever key I'm hitting at that moment. It took me double the length of time just to type this paragraph because it keeps stopping every few seconds.

I have a Commodore Laptop (Argentina) and all the keys that have a FN function attached to them do not work as their normal function any more - this happened after lending the laptop to my kids....

I think it may be FN lock, but can-t find any way to unlock it.

Any ideas please.

Many thanks.

Answer:Keys that have FN functions on them not working as normal keys

Check the Manual on the model's Support Downloads webpage for key combo to unlock: http://www.ehow.com/how_4968993_unlo...ey-laptop.html

Try updating or reinstalling the hotkeys driver from the model's Support Downloads webpage. Driver Install - Device Manager

While there look also for any downloadable fixes for these key functions or related.

It may also be disabled in msconfig>Startup. You can google the listings there to see what they're for. Normally you only need your AV checked and the rest are freeloaders, but some models require hotkey software to be running at startup if it provides anciliiary functions like backlighting, function toggling, etc.

I have a new Thinkpad yoga (but I had a similar problem with Yoga 2 Pro I had to return) - whenever I touch the screen to start typing (in the browser, word document, almost everywhere), the touch keyboard pops up and I have to manually close it.
This is extermemly annoying and sometimes leads to typos and stuff.

I looked into other threads which indicated I can tackle this problem through Lenovo Transitions, but that option does not exist on my control panel.

This seems like something that ought to have a simple solution but I can't find it.
Any thoughts?

I've been having several issues with my computer over the past week or so, mostly in the way of opening folders and menus. The following is a detailed listing of the issues I've been experiencing:

1. When I open the start menu and move my cursor over the "Recent Items" button or the bottom right arrow that opens up a menu for restarting, logging off, shutting down, etc. the start menu automatically closes.

2. On my desktop, I have my account folder. When I began noticing the problem, when I double clicked the folder the properties appeared instead of the folder opening. Now when I double click it, an error message comes up that says, "The properties for this item are not available." Any other folder I try to open up this way makes the properties appear (save for the left side drop-down menu when exploring folders). Also, if I try double clicking on programs and/or applications, nothing happens save for a swirly loading cursor appearing beside my mouse which disappears in less than a second with nothing else happening.

3. Any time I try to type in my word processor, various keys cause menus to pop up ("W" makes the "Window" menu drop down, "H" makes the "Help" mnenu drop down, etc.). If I try to save a file by typing in its name, no letters appear.

4. Right clicking either doesn't work or causes a menu to come up for a split second and then disappear. This happens no matter where I right click.

Answer:Having Various Issues With Viewing Menus and Typing

It sounds to me like your Alt button is broken, so as to be always pressed. If you have a tower desktop, try disconnecting the keyboard and see whether the problem disappears. Obviously if that is the case you'll need a new keyboard; it's kind of hard to use a computer without one.

hi, i recently bought a hp probook 650 g1 and i got some issues with my keyboard. it had a azerty keyboard and once i click on my left shift key it types the first letters of the azerty keyboard: ZC|TY<>| if caps lock on and zxc/ty,./.  with caps lock off which is verry strange. also when left shift key is pressed in it activates the num lock key and when pressed again it deactivates the num lock key.i have tried removing the azerty keyboard and placing a qwerty keyboard in it but the problem stil presists.  the right shift key has no problems at al and functions properly. i also installed all the dirvers for this notebook but still the problem presists. please help.

Hello, WE have several of these tinys at work and we've run into a problem where the PC stops taking input from the keyboard after the PC starts up, and the numlock light goes out as if it isn't even getting power anymore. This is a problem when the PC crashes because you can't choose "start windows normally" and then you get stuck in an endless repair loop. This has happened on at least two machines that I have dealt with personally. I have used many different keyboards, tried all the USB ports, tried all the USB settings in the BIOS, tried updating the BIOS, tried removing all USB devices except the keyboard, and also tried to get around it by booting off a flash key to try and trick the PC into booting normally. The only reliable solution is to wipe and re-image the tiny, which is not an acceptable solution at all. Is there a fix for this? Thanks,Matt

I have a laptop (attached to a server) that is being affected by mysterious typing and access of the pull-down menus - as if someone is accessing it remotely.

For example, I open up an email message, start typing, but then words I am not typing myself (that have nothing to do with my own message) start typing onto the screen.

The server has a firewall, and the laptop itself has MacAfee Firewwall installed. It is running Windows XP.

We have four laptops in the room. No other laptops are experiencing this problem.

There is no wireless access, expcept that the keyboards and mouses/mice are all wireless. But, the phantom text that appears is not related to anything anyone is typing on other laptops.

Our official tech support people have absolutely no idea why this is happening. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Answer:Mystery typing and access of pull down menus

Hello

Sounds spooky!

I have never heard of this but off the top of my head it sounds like a virus. What things does it type?

Things to try: (Apologies if they have already been done)

1. Update your virus tables and scan your pc. (also try a free scan from www.antivirus.com)
2. When the mystery typing starts etc check taskmanager for any "dodegy" looking processes.
3. Do you have pcanywhere on the pc? Are you sure someone is not playing a prank on you?

Thats all I can think of for now.
Will post again if anything comes up.

Very strange!
Good luck

Hello, I'm new to these forums. Just wanted to find somewhere to post this and see if anyone has an answer since i couldn't find a solution to the problem by googling...

This problem happens apparently at random. i could be away from my computer or i can be using it. At some point the keyboard just stop responding. i can't type, and the num-lock, scroll-lock, caps-lock buttons don't turn on or off their respective lights. The lights on the keyboard are still on, btw. As my mouse is still working fine, i can browse the internet and open and close folders, but trying to open a new program or close an open one doesn't work. Trying to right click the taskbar, i see an option to open the task manager but once clicked, it won't open either. trying to restart or turn off the computer just gets it stuck on the "logging off" screen forever until i manually turn off my computer on the button at the front. once restarted everything works fine until the problem randomly happens again.
i tried switching USB ports for the keyboard before and during the problem but that doesn't fix the problem. i tried erasing INFCACHE.1 i tried clearing greyed out USB ports in device manager. i tried discharging static from the PC. i tried error checking and clearing from the drive. anything else i could try and do?

Answer:Keyboard stops responding and can't start new programs or restart

Don't know if anyone will know how to do this, I know there is a way but can't remember how to do it. I need to be able to type in a phrase, and have another phrase above it (like superscripted) but on that same line right above the main phrase. Any ideas?

I'm using Word 2000 and Window's IME to type my Japanese papers and I need to be able to put the pronunciation for some of the Kanji above the Kanji in case I foget it.

Thanks, hopefully.

Answer:MS WORD 2000: typing text above text in one line??

What you can do is insert a comment.

Outline the word in the document, then click on Insert, Comment.

A comment box will appear at the bottom, type in what you want, then click Close. The outlined word will know have intials after it, and if you hover the mouse over it, a comment box with whatevr you yped will appear above the word. You can double-click the initials to change the comment text.

Even while the key was not there the problem continued, so it is not just a jammed key or anything.Could this be some other issue? Thanks

Well, I'm not to good with small talk so lets get right down to it.
I'm going to be ordering a new laptop next month, but all of the systems I've looked at only come with vista. Now one of the things I'm going to be using this new laptop is to play an mmorpg on it(not to mention that my current laptop is ancient). I've been playing this game on a console for the last few years and wanna try it with better graphics/framerate, but the problem is this game and vista aren't sopposed to play well together.
Now I have an oem disc for windows xp, but I used the product key on my current laptop when I upgraded it from 98(like I said, ancient). I'm going to be erasing this current laptop and giving it away to be refurbished, will I be able to re-use my oem disc to downgrade my new laptop and use the product key to activate it or am I gonna have to feed ms more of my money for a new oem disc(or is there away to get just a product activation key cheap)?
Sorry if this is the wrong place for this kind of questiong and thank you for any answers.

**NOTE I AM NOT ASKING FOR A KEY. THIS THREAD WAS STARTED IN RELATION TO THE KEY I ALREADY HAVE**
OS: Windows XP Home Edition SP2*
* will explain below

I have the absolute worst luck when it comes to computers & my luck continues to rear its ugly head. Long story short, I have had to install a fresh copy of my OS for the 7th time. Now I know what you're thinking (what is wrong with this guy?), but believe me each time it was a last resort. *I just finished installing my OS again so I have not updated it to SP3 just yet.

The question I have is in relation to my key. Instead of having to call Microsoft yet again, is there a way that I can get a new key? I understand that there is a changer that can change a valid key, but since my key is no longer valid, can Microsoft issue me a new one so I don't have to call them if this problem happens again? I'm optimistic about this last install, but I do fear & always will fear that this problem may happen again. Thanks in advance.

On another forum I frequent people have been buying cheap dodgy keys on eBay and kinguin and using phone Activation to authenticate windows.

One Guy bought windows 10 Pro off eBay which came with a DVD-R of Windows and a key printed on a piece of paper and on first attempt to activate an error came up stating that it was a group key and not for single use PC's.

One call to Microsoft and the computer was activated over the phone.

Another guy was looking at buying a Win 10 Home key for $45aus.

Did a virtual chat with Microsoft and here is the transcript.

My inquiry is regarding buying a Windows 10 Home OEM Key from Kinguin Windows 10 Home OEM Key | Buy on Kinguin for a new pc i am building
9:00 am
is this legit?
9:01 am
Please send me the product key so that i can check
9:01am
I haven't purchased it yet. Can I buy this key then use your media creation tool to put it on a usb to boot on a new computer build/
9:02 am
Yes you can Paul
9:03am
Ok thankyou very much. I just wanted to make sure as I am buying from a 3rd party not directly from Microsoft
9:05 am
Yes and you can use the Media Creation tool as long as you have the product key.
9:05

Surely the guy on the other end of the chat should have known it was a stolen key but let the poster believe it was genuine when it wasn't.

Are these mistakes or are Microsoft allowing these Activations deliberately?

Hello Guys, I bought in 2008 an HP Pavilion dv9000 Entertainment PC? (Windows Vista)      My computer was working very good up to now. I was watching a movie on hulu.com. In the middle of the streaming movie the computer crashed; I don?t know if this was caused by a hacker or a virus. I pulled the battery out right away during this crashing. Then I put the battery back in and turned it on. My computer had trouble booting up.  The screen was all kinds of colors and won?t boot up. I repeated taking the battery out again and in again and turning it on; but this time I pressed the f11 key to try the recovery process at startup. It did not work. I repeated trying this recovery process many times and still my computer will not boot. The screen just shows a medium gray like it is stuck in some kind of space warp! I even tried to pause the initial boot by pressing the ESC key right as I turned it on; so I can try to observe the screen at startup. That did not work! I like this computer; it has been doing good work. It had a problem similar to this back in 2015. But when I pressed the f11 key the computer fixed itself. I realize that many of us are being hacked and that we are dealing with viruses because internet servers, etc, are not protecting us and they should; the internet servers are responsible.     Thank You,Vahlsing

Am using Vista x64 Home Premium, FYI.

After using the right-click context menu on a taskbar item or toolbar icon, say to close a program, my taskbar stops responding. I can no longer select a different item in the taskbar or right-click anything. If I use ALT-TAB to switch to something else, the taskbar becomes functional again.

Any ideas what's going on here? This just started in the last several days but I can't for the life of me recall what I might have changed for this to start happening.

Thanks!

Did not solve the problem, it is a bit of a mystery. Anything I type, as this reply to you, is normal. It is only when I right click to bring up a sub menu, say if I am wanting to click on something in Favourites, all the list of these is in miniature. Same when you want to delete an email or move to junk folder. The sub menus come up in miniscule size.

If your new install is falling over at such an early stage of a new install, then I would be inclined to do a full CHKDSK, then possibly a new install. Left click start. Left click all programs. Left click accessories. And, if possible see if you can right click "Command Prompt" if you can then run as admin. Then type in the command box "chkdsk /f/r" and press enter. If you can not do any of this because of the right click, then try this tool>> ClickMe
Don't forget to turn off your antivirus while this software is running. There is some software to fix or tweek the right click, but if you have to do this at such an early stage, then I would re install windows after trying my best to do a full CHKDSK 1st. I do hope this helps. Let us know how it goes plzz.

Hi,

I am using an old Sony Vaio laptop with windows Xp SP3 on it and I am having serious trouble with my keyboard. To be precise some drink was spilled on it and the left-arrow and up-arrow keys where ruined.

I searched the web for a new keyboard, but its really hard to get and to expensive (~$70-~$100) and my laptop is an old one(2005),so its not worth it.

The thing I want to do, is to assign these functions to other keys, i.e. the function keys. Probably this can be done, but my knowledge on windows limited.

I have contacted Microsoft, but since my keyboard is not a Microsoft one, they do not offer any help.

I will contact Sony too, however I dont think that the solution has to do with the hardware, but rather with the operating system.

I will very much appreciate it if anyone can be of any help, since otherwise I will probably have to get rid of it.

Many thanks.

Alex

Hello!

I did something - a long time ago, I don't remember what it was, unfortunately.

I haven't been able to use the alt keys for all that time. They exhibit erratic behavior - I think the left one functions like alt-f4 and the right one... sometimes opens the right-click mouse menu then a sub-menu?

It's hard to pin down, especially when it tends to fool with (or shut down) the file you're in when you're trying to test it.

What I'd really appreciate would be instructions on how to firmly establish what the keys are currently set to and how to compel them to do what they ordinarily do.

My thanks in advance!

Hello, I seem to be having an issue with the soft touch buttons at the top of my keyboard that change/mute the volume. Without any influence the sound regularly mutes or unmutes, increases or decreases in volume. The icon appears as if I have pressed the soft key buttons, however I haven't. Greetings!

I've been having this problem for quite sometime now, but it's finally gotten to be really frustrating.

In some of my menus (roughly 50%), the text and the entry fields seem to run off of the edge of the menu. It almost seems like the type is too large to be contained within the menu, even though the type size looks normal. This seems to only happen with third party menus, but since I use a lot of third party apps, it gets pretty annoying. I can't recall when this began happening, but I do know that it wasn't always this way.

Follow this link (http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b326/follicle/Menu.jpg) for an image of one of the menus. See how the "Last Name" field runs right off the edge of the menu? I've had to abort this installation because I couldn't fill in all of the needed information to register.

I've tried adjusting my resolution, playing with display font sizes, and adjusting my moniter DPI setting with no success.

Any thoughts on this odd problem? Any solutions?
Thanks in advance for any replies!

Hello! So my notebook has a lovely function key line-up that lets me adjust screen brightness, turn the backlight on the keyboard, mute and adjust volume, pause/play/fast-forward/rewind, and turn the wi-fi on and off. I have never had a problem with these keys and use them all the time, but they all randomly stopped working a few days ago. I've tried pressing them in combination with the fn key, but they still don't work. And when I do press them, it seems like they are doing other stuff (for example, if I press f6/mute, the content of the google search/address  bar will become highlighted).  I thought maybe my cat stepped on some combo that turned the function keys off, but I haven't been able to find anything under "settings" that would allow me to turn them back on. I did the BIOS thing - they were already enabled in there, so I disabled, restarted, tried the keys with no luck, shut down, enabled, restarted, and they still don't work.  I've been browsing the forums and downloading drivers that people have posted, but that hasn't helped.  I've gone into the device manager and made sure my keyboard and monitor drivers are up to date.  I've tried going through HP support for updated drivers, however Windows 10 isn't an option for my notebook, only Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, and neither of those had a hotkeys support driver option anyway. And before you ask, I've been running Windows 10 for a long time now without any trou... Read more

Help!

I can't figure out how to work the key functions. For example sometimes when I try to make a question mark I get an ?? (like right now).
How do I get back to the question mark?? (see, there it goes again).

Answer:Satellite E100 - How can I get the functions keys to work?

Hi!

It?s also depending on the keyboard language how to make a question mark but if you want to make one you have to press the Shift key and then you should be able to make one. On my keyboard the question mark is on the same key as the apostrophe key.

The FN keys you can you use if hold down the FN key and then press an appropriate key.

Many Thanks

Answer:Satellite L550-11C - the FN keys hotkeys not functions

The FN buttons are controlled by Flash Card Support Utility!
You have to ensure that VAP and Flash Card Support Utility are installed properly.

If the FN buttons will not function even than VAP and Flash Card Support Utility are insatlled, then you will have to reinstall the Flash Card Support Utility again?

After that please check if the Flash Cards are enabled in Programs -> Toshiba -> Flash Card

The adaptive keys on the 2014 X1 Carbon Keyboard seems like the perfect place for multimedia keys such as play/pause/fast forward/rewind but I am suprised to see them missing. Is this something that could be added in a future update?

Answer:X1 Carbon Adaptive Keys - Multimedia functions

Take a closer look at the dynamic keyboard row. These are preset keys. They are not rendered. They are just illuminated touch keys, nothing more than that ;-)But nobody uses these play/pause/rewind keys. Why use those keys if you have your window open, right? And plus not all software supports multimedia keys.ThinkPads aren't multimedia laptops, they are meant for business, conferencing, etc.

I have re-installed, as a clean install, Win7 Pro 64 SP1, on a Lenovo T40.Every driver on the website had to be downloaded and installed. However, I cannot regain functionality on the 'Fn' blue keys, which turn the brightness /volume etc. up and down. Also windows update seems reluctant to find any updates......Is there a keyboard driver for this model?I had no such problem with my S200 model re-installation. Any help would be appreciated, thanks..

After plugging in my external keyboard, both my external and laptop keyboard no longer function. The keyboards cannot type or execute shortcut commands. When clicking download links it results in downloading download.htm. This problem persists after unplugging the keyboard but only seems to begin after the external keyboard has been plugged in. After a restart computer use without plugging in the external keyboard results in no issues, though I haven't done so for extended periods of time. The external keyboard functions normally when plugged into another computer, though it was a Mac, so I'm not sure if the different operating system could have an effect here.

I've run a Malwarebytes scan already and it didn't pick up anything. I think it's likely a virus, but I can generally just use Malwarebytes to solve the vast majority of my problems so I don't know where to go from here. At the moment I'm running a Spybot search and destroy scan to see if that picks up anything Malwarebytes could have missed.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Edit: Spybot managed to pick up and delete a virus called win32.downloader.gen, I also ran TDSSkiller and picked up no root kits. The problems still seems to occur.

Try a System Restore to a time before the problem began. If you have such a Restore point available.

Download and scan with Adwcleaner. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
Copy and paste the log in this thread or read the instructions carefully on how to use ADWCleaner on the linked Webpage.

Which Brand is your external keyboard?
I am thinking there might be a driver conflict and you may be able to fix it by downloading the latest drivers from the keyboard manufacturer's Website.

Hello,

Please could someone help me out.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C50-A0393 that I got a few months ago with Windows 8.1 already installed (64 bit). Today I got a message saying I needed to look at the PC Health, a Toshiba blue message concerning the access agreement, and I noticed that there were three upgrades that needed to be done, the only one I can remember being the Toshiba Video Player. I think that another one had to do with the charger light?
I don't know.

But once I restarted my laptop after the updates I noticed that the special function keys were not working (i.e. the volume, mute, pause and play, etc.). i then went onto the Toshiba Desktop Assist and into system settings and selected the keyboard tab. I then made sure the setting for special function mode was selected.

Now, when that setting is in place, certain keys work but for F3, F5, F6, etc and when I want to use the special functions only the volume up and down work when pressing 'Fn', but special function mode is still selected? Only those two work, not the mute or flightmode or bluetooth, which was working normally before the upgrades.

I have googled but cannot find anything specific to 8.1, or not relating to upgrading to 8.1. I cannot find the flashcard utility and do not want to try something where I do not know what I am doing. How can I get these special function keys working again normally? Sorry for the long message but I wanted to give as much info as possible.

Answer:Special Functions keys not working on Satellite C50 - Windows 8.1

Hi

It sounds strange to me that a Toshiba update (Toshiba Video Player, etc?) would affect the function key functionality.
Nevertheless? the function key (F1-F10) can be used in combination with or without the FN button. This depends on the special function key mode.

In case you want to use the F1-F12 functions without the pressing FN button, the function key mode should be enabled (should be set to special function mode)

Here the full details how it works:
https://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD2503B90001R01.htm

Now it these buttons would not work even if the FN button has been pressed, then there is some problem with the software.

First of all I would recommend you to set the BIOS to default because this function key mode can be changed in BIOS too.
After that, check if the key would work. If not, reinstall the
Toshiba Function Key Utility

And Toshiba System Driver

You can also check if the essential service has not been disabled.
Start the Task Manager and go to start up items. There you should enable all Toshiba apps and services and then restart.

Hi,

I've just had my laptop (windows 8.1) repaired with replacement hardware being installed. Something I have noticed that changed for the worse is how the brightness F keys do not respond. The F2 and F3 keys work themselves, but not the special function. It's really odd as the others work fine, such as volume.

I've tried uninstalling/installing two driver packs (I can't remember the names but one was Toshiba Utility Value or something are the other literally had the wording fn or f keys/keyboard in it). This has not worked.

Can someone help troubleshoot this for me? I'm sure when windows 10 comes along it all reset and hopefully work again but it's a very niggling annoyance at the moment.

Thanks.

Answer:Qosmio X870 - F keys special functions not working

Unisntall the Toshiba Value Added Package because this package isn?t compatible with Win 8.1 system

You need to install the :
Toshiba System Driver for Win 8.1
http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-...1016171635.zip

as well as the
Toshiba Function Key Utility for Win 8.1
http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-...1002134400.zip

Check also all the Win 8.1 64bit drivers available for this series.

I would recommend you to test the different graphic card drivers in case the display brightness would not work properly.

Dear friends,

I have the Toshiba,A200 23X. I installed the Win XP+SP2 and everything seems to work fine, except when I press the FN key + F6 0r F7 that increase or decrease the lightness of the screen, nothing happens. The first functions keys (on/off speaker,,stanby,,) works. If anybody can help me.

Answer:Re: Satellite A200-23X: Functions keys not working properly

You say all FN key combinations are working except increase and decrease display brightness? Are you sure?

Check that you have installed all needed drivers and utilities.
If you did, then reinstall FN keys and display drivers.

I have recently installed Windows7 ultimate 32bit to my pc but the FN function button is not working. I have installed the latest VAD version 1.4 (for windows 7) as also the flash card utility (for vista as windows 7 does not have them) like suggested to other threads but the button still refuses to cooperate with me. The flash card are running ok but only with mouse. at msconfig all my startup programs are running ok and i also try restart flash card several times.

What other driver must I try?

After my configuration is finished (i hope shortly) with which way can I make I recovery disk so I will not have to pass all these torture?

Seems to me, you have tried everything to make it work. What if you try to install Vap for Vista (not for win 7, as you installed)?

Hi all, I am a long time IBM/Lenovo user, but have recently began using my old T60 which was collecting dust. It is a Thinkpad T60 2008VM5 machine, 1.88ghz, upgraded to 3gigs of ram, 160gb HDD, and running a 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate OS. As of right now, the Fn keys aren't working, and neither are ctrl+x and ctrl+v shortcuts. All other keys working fine-- numbers, qwerty, Windows key, alt, shift, etc. I've checked inside the computer to make sure nothing was interferring with the keyboard, also I've updated Power Manager as well as the BIOS prior to posting here, so I guess the only issue that hasn't been addressed was the fact that I've recently had my display adapter recognize the ATI Radeon X1300 card (it was listed as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter previously) and from what I've gathered, the Fn keys could've stopped working due to that.  Does anyone have a fix for this? I've looked around and found nothing, but I do have an ISO saved from before I had the ATI card recognized so I could roll back to that, but having that Standard VGA Graphics Adapter feels so.. Pedestrian. EDIT: I should probably mention that the volume control buttons work fine. Also, ctrl+alt+del doesn't seem to work anymore, either.. But alt and del work on their own. Looking forward to reading your suggestions!

Answer:FN keys + ctrl copy/paste functions not working

So I ended up restoring the image before I had the ATI display adapter, and apparently the function keys + ctrl are not working either. Does anyone have a solution?

I have a windows 10 laptop that is missing the text on the background of icons / menus, but not all of them. Example would be right clicking in device manager and the options that popus up is all white and cant see the text. But if I go into safemode it works fine, no issues.

Things I have done:
Set a new theme, updated and reinstalled video card drivers, SFC scan and no errors. Reset video card settings for users.

Answer:Windows 10 missing Text on menus

First backup important on to atlas a 10gb USB or more, then download windows 10 64 bit is from get into pc then use rufus to put the image on a different USB drive. AT LEAST 20gigs. Then boot from the USB with the windows 10 on it, then go through the setup process. Afterthat, you can copy all of the data on the other usb. If this does not help, Contact Windows support.

I have no clue if this is the correct forum to post this in. I will like to explain how I have gotten to this point. For some reason, there was some weird things happening to my laptop. When I ctrl+alt+del, there was no options other than lock the computer and log off. The task manager completely disappeared. I had no clue why that happened. Secondly, my context menus wouldn't work on the start menu, so deleting a folder or a program out of my start menu was impossible unless I went through the countless folders in my C drive to do it that way. The problem was, the option to enable or disable context menus was missing from my properties, which caused the issue to begin with.

I went on countless websites, trying to remedy the problem. I finally came across the tutorials on this site and fixed both issues quickly! The issue I am having now is a fix I tried before I knew what I was doing and I have no clue how to change it back. When I open the context menu in explorer, instead of the first option being 'Open', there is only a 1. It was when I tried to go into Regedit and fix the issue there. I am wondering is there is any way to change it back to 'Open' and how would I go about doing this?

I am going to attach a picture so you guys will understand what I am talking about.

Answer:How do you edit text in Context Menus?

You can try this tutorial by Brink to set things to default.

Send To Context Menu - Remove or Restore Default Items

I would also using this tutorial to check Windows 7 system files.

Hello Everyone...Just found this forum, hope I can find some answers. Windows 98SE, while typing, usually while online, the blinking curser disappears, and typed letters stop appearing. Also, when curser disappears, blue color of AOL banner turns to grey. If I click the mouse, eveything is back to normal for a while. Seems to stop doing this after computer has been on for a while, say an hour, but not always. All other functions are fine, and a mouse click always corrects problem. Other than being VERY annoying, doesn't seem to be a problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I recent bought a P100-160.

There seems to be pre-installed software which keeps a slide-down menu hidden at the very top of the screen. Whenever I move my mouse near it, or when I hold down the FN key, it slides down and gets in the way.

How can I switch it off?

Thanks

Answer:Satellite P100-160: Annoying Toshiba Drop-down functions using FN keys

Hi

This is a new feature ;) called Toshiba Vista ?FlashCards?.
This utility controls the FN keys and it?s visible at the top of the display screen.

You can disable or uninstall it but in such case the FN keys will not work.

It?s not possible to disable the FlashCards without loosing the FN keys functionality!!

Hello,

i've got a Satellite Pro L850 with brandnew Windows 7 Home Premium. I had to reinstall windows and I didn't have the recovery DVD's, so I used a Windows istallation DVD and installed the drivers manually.

The only thing I miss now is the displaying of the functions (like brighter, louder, touchpad on/off, Wifi/Bluetooth on/off and so on) of the F1 to F12-keys.

Can you tell me, which Toshiba driver or tool do I need?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Andy

What you need is Value Added Package. This package contains several tools and utilities. One of them is Flash cards utility. This tool is for Flash cards that you see on the top of the screen when you press FN button.
