VSS GetDiskFreeSpaceEx() failed with 0x00000005

Question: VSS GetDiskFreeSpaceEx() failed with 0x00000005

Creating a restore point produces a pop up System Protection error box with the message:

The restore point could not be created for the following reason:
Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data (0x8004331F)

In the Alert Logs there are 5 alerts, an error and 9 more alerts.

I have the full body of the alerts and the error attached.

But to give you an idea:

Preferred Solution: VSS GetDiskFreeSpaceEx() failed with 0x00000005

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on why I am getting the following such errors when running a robocopy batch file (as administrator) which cause the backup script to stall (- albeit temporarily):

Quote:
2013/07/30 21:10:43 ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Copying File C:\Users\Tim\My Documents\Harey 8-128.jpg

2013/07/30 21:15:27 ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Copying File C:\Users\Tim\My Documents\TimsData\Tim\Heddon's Mouth - Printable Walk - South West Coast Path.htm
Access is denied.

I am using the following backup command:

Code:
robocopy "%srcPath%\My Documents" "%dstPath%\My Documents" /b /v /ts /fp /bytes /tee /e /dcopy:t /copy:dt /a-:sh /xf desktop.* /np /log+:%logPath%\mwk1log.txt
I realise that if I limit the retries and wait time from the defaults the stall time will be shortened and the file(s) skipped. However, that does not resolve the issue why robocopy is having a problem copying the file(s).

I have found that if the erroring files are moved from the source location to the desktop, the following errors arethen recorded in the log:

Answer:Robocopy Backup - ERROR 5 (0x00000005)

Hi,

I have seen instances of a bug with the dcopy:t switch - try the script without that switch. You could also try the COPY:DATSOU switch, although I'm unclear if that copies the folder time stamps too.

Code:
robocopy "%srcPath%\My Documents" "%dstPath%\My Documents" /b /v /ts /fp /bytes /tee /e /copy:dt /a-:sh /xf desktop.* /np /log+:%logPath%\mwk1log.txt

I'm trying to robocopy a large folder from the command line (run as Administrator) and on certain files I get an error 5 "Access Denied." Looking at the files' security reveals that the only user with access is a garbled, nonsensical user name as seen here:

I tried using the takeown command to take ownership from the command line but this had no effect. I tried deleting this user but it tells me that the permissions are inherited (even though the folder in which the file exists does not have this garbled user) Is there another command I can use to fix this? I have several hundred files in this folder with the same problem.

Answer:Robocopy ERROR 5 (0x00000005) and Corrupted User Permissions

I figured out the solution. I ran these commands on the directories:

Code:
takeown.exe /F * /A /R /D Y
icacls.exe * /grant Everyone:(F) /grant Guests:(F) /grant Users:(F) /T /C /Q

Hi there,
Storage pool with two storage spaces created using Windows 8 Release Preview and then ported into Windows 8 RTM. I'm now trying to delete one of the storages spaces and getting this access is denied error message.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Answer:Unable to delete Storage Space "Access is Denied" 0x00000005

I solved the problem for me.
Again... No file lock on the storage pool and no application is doing anything with this virtual disk. But it's not possible to remove it from storage spaces. This has nothing to do with ownership of the drive, access rights or an access of a process. I
had a clean windows setup with no programs installed. I'd say that this is a bug of windows!

Anyway here is my solution:
* Opened an explorer with "Computer" open.
* Opened "computer managment" and selected the storage list.
* I selected the storage pool which I wanted to delete but wasn't able to.
* Right click -> format... I think I have chosen NTFS but it's not so important...
* Warning that the drive is in use (what a nonsense) -> yes yes ok
* waited a few seconds until the bar with the free space disappeared at the "Computer" folder for this drive (on the explorer).
* stopped the format process. some error msgs that this couldn't be canceled and then he said he couldn't finish... (wtf ;))
* then back to the storage spaces overview... manage storage spaces... delete storage pool... pool disappeared... finish

hope this helps someone

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Also...

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

Just got my W530, plugged it in, set up internet, and proceeded to run Windows Update as my first chore.  29 of the initial 54 updates FAILED.  Tried 3 more times, nothing but failures.  Ran system restore, and selected the first restore point, from when I first powered up the computer.  System restore FAILED. I am guessing this is not normal?  I only installed a few browsers, and CPUZ, in between the updating process.  I am trying to make recovery media, but the please wait dialog has been doing it's impression of KIT the car for at least 10 minutes, and when I tried to close it I get "not responding". Any ideas?  It would be nice if I didn't have to return a new laptop over some lame software glitch. :-( Paul Anderegg

Is this similar to what you're seeing? If so, try the solution I posted on the top of page 2. see if installing the one troublesome update, KB2647753, first, by itself, then allows all of the others to succeed.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

You have two anti-virus programs running, which will cause trouble. Uninstall one of them. Restart the machine and post a new HJT log.

Download this tool to your desktop:
http://www.uploads.ejvindh.net/rootchk.exe
Run the program. After a short time a logfile will turn up. Copy the contents of the log into the thread.

Notice: Some security-programs prevent the creation of dummy drivers with certain names. This may cause false positives. If the log of rootchk contains a lot of hidden drivers, you may want to turn of your security programs while rootchk is scanning (you should then unhook your network connection as well)

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Answer:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If... I installed the latest round of Windows updates for my Win7 x64 install and it never completed (ran for about 24 hours) so I powered off the machine. Upon restarting, it said:

Code:
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause" and has instructions for using system repair, then at the bottom:

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: Oxc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data
So I booted off a Windows recovery disk and figured Startup Repair would fix it. Alas, after it says "Windows found problems with your computer's startup options" and asks me if I want to repair, I click "repair and restart" and it says "Failed to save startup options".

Code:
The "repair details" are:
Name: {bootmgr}
Identifier: {...}

The following options will be added:
Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recovery\...\Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=D:
I've tried running Startup Repair from the manual options screen and it says it cannot repair automatically. I have two partitions, the 100MB windows System partition, which Recovery Console mounts as C:\ and my main windows partition, which it mounts as D: and I can see all of my files on it.

Running "bootrec /repairbcd" gives me "Total identified Windows Installations: 0"

I'm not sure if there might be something fishy with the way it's detecting my partition table... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 update failed and laptop won't boot. Startup repair failed

Have you run bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot?
Then, if it doesn't boot, run bootrec /RebuildBcd (from this KB article: How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows )

c0000005 is STATUS_NO_SUCH_FILE - which means it can't find File: \Boot\BCD

Hello smeraldan and welcome to Seven Forums.

My usual disclaimer: I'm not an expert at anything. Sometimes malware can prevent Windows Updates from installing. Run a full scan with your personal anti-malware suite. Then use the free Malwarebytes to run another full scan. (No anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a thing we'd all be using it.)

Another possible problem is if system files became damaged or corrupt. I'd run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You could also try running the System Update Readiness Tool if you haven't already done so.

System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

Try installing the updates again, but this time just do a few at a time (maybe only 5 or so.) Keep track of the KB numbers. Start with the critical updates, then the important, and save the optional for last. If a group of 5 installs OK go on to the next group. If any group fails to install you'll know which group to uninstall. Try installing just one update at a time. If they install OK go on to the next group. Otherwise just ignore the problem update(s) for the time being and continue installing in groups of 5.

I have three users on a Windows 7 computer. none will log on, they all give "Windows failed the logon. the remote procedure call failed and did not execute" it doesn't matter how many time i reboot the computer, all three accounts same error. Googling the problem produces spammy results. exact quote produces "no results for" "searching without quotes" message

Answer:Windows failed the logon. the remote procedure call failed and did not

Is this the same computer you had problems with last week?
Have you tried running sfc /scannow? You have to do that from an elevated command prompt. Sometimes you have to do it in safe mode.

My wife's user account in Windows 7 is having redirect problems. Mostly in Google Chrome. Clicking on a link in a google search result page will take you to enigmasoftware or to some other DNS entry; hitting back and then clicking the link again usually gets you through to the actual page.

I attempted to use the 'Vista and Win 7 Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure'. However, HitmanPro failed. It would boot up but during the scan Windows would report that it "stopped working". After trying left-ctrl initiation multiple times, it would say between 1 to 5 processes were halted, but the scan would still fail.

MGTools also seemed to fail to generate a log. I have included a text copy of what ran.

I hope I didn't do something wrong. If I did please let me know!

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Chris

Answer:Redirect problems in Windows 7, Hitman Pro failed, MGtools failed

Download OTL to your desktop.

Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

Also...

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

The computer crashes regularly 3 to 4 times a day.

I have noticed it tends to crash when the mouse and keyboard are not in use. Typically when away from the computer for 15 ?20 minutes .

On occasion it has crashed while I was using the computer.

I run two screens. The colour of the BSOD differs, black, blue even red !!

There have been occasions where the ?official? MS blue screen appears with messages, what failed:nvlldmkm.sys and what failed:CRITICAL STRUCTURE CORRUPTION

The latter has started to appear last few days.

I have included couple of files with whoCrashed software analysis.

I have been through the mill with NVIDEA support and Microsoft support without any conclusion.

Please help. Thank you in for your consideration.

So, my surface pro 3 started giving me blue screen of death errors and attempting to reboot automatically. I talked to Microsoft tech support and they gave me the instructions to make a USB recovery drive. But then, I got a new support tech and they had me do a "2 button reboot." This solved the problem for a while. But the errors started again.

Here is a list of the errors it gave me some multiple times:
IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
DRIVER_CURUPT_EXPOOL
ATTEMEPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY
UNEXPECTED_CURNAL_MODE_TRAP

While I have attempted to totally factory reset the thing it would error out before I could get the recovery key in. Attempting to use the recovery USB only results in an error of error codes:
0xc0000098 or 0xc0000428. The window's directions for creating a recovery USB included downloading a "recovery image" specific to the Surface Pro 3 and moving it to a USB. But the following directions for creating the recovery drive required going through the control panel and using some built in recovery drive creation process BUT this process deletes all info on the USB drive including the recovery image. I had to create the drive on my work desktop, but there is details on the page saying things like "make sure this USB is only ever used with the Surface." Well it's tremendously late for that. I was running Win XP which finally failed and I was able to enter in safe mode (only, no networking) and ran all the tests I could think of. Hard drive is ok and so I attempted to repair WinXP from the installation CD. However, the PC failed to shut down and restart so I eventually force closed it. Now it won't even load past the initial black windows screen, don't even get the option of going into safe mode.

Is there any way I (or someone) could access the hard drive to retrieve the data? I guess I could reinstall the OS but don't want to do that yet as I'll definitely lose the data.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Win XP failed, repair failed -- can I access hard drive?

Sure, there are many ways. Depending on what you want in the end decides how to proceed.

If you have a lot of space free on the drive, you could boot off a linux dvd and create a new partition. You'd have to shrink the existing, then make a new one. Then you could just copy over the data from the old one to the new one. Then reinstall windows onto the old partition, and copy your stuff back (then delete the partition and expand the remaining to fill the rest of the space).

You can also just boot off a linux disk and copy it to a thumb drive or whatever.

Or you could remove the hard drive and place it in another computer.

Also, I'm not convinced you lose the data if you install Windows again. I'm pretty sure you can install without formatting the drive. Your programs won't work, but it shouldn't overwrite any of your data. This is a non-ideal solution though.

I am currently using windows 7 ultimate x64. I was in the middle of a process restoring my computer to a few days back and suddenly it froze. i did a power shut down and when i turned it back on, i wasn't able to get back into windows. i was brought to startup repair and it gave me errors. 'Boot manager failed to find OS loader." there was options for restoring, but all my restore points were gone. recovery wasn't able to find image backup. "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically" so i did some research before i came here. i was told to go into safe mode to restore, but whenever i enter safe mode, startup repair would take over and shows the same errors, also i read a tutorial using a repair disc ( made a copy of it on someone elses ultimate x64 computer) and i get the 0x00000e9 error if i boot from disc. what can i do? as of now i dont have the installation disc with me. i wont be able to get hold of it until tomorrow. theres a lot of important files in that hard drive and i really cant lose any. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Answer:Failed to Find OS Load. Startup Repair FAILED

If you can't use a system repair disk, then you could simply reinstall Windows on the same hard drive. You don't need to format the hard drive during installation, just select your main hard drive and install, that way you can preserve your files. The files will be in "Windows.Old" after installation in your "Local Disk".

Also, make sure your repair CD is 64-bit, like your system. Try to access your BIOS, by pressing the "Delete" key; it's different for various mktherboards, and select your CD-ROM to be first to boot. Might help, I'm not sure. If it helps, we'll start from there.

You'll want to select "Command Prompt" from the repair disk, we'll need it.

Cross posted in Macrium Reflect forum:

I have a Samsung EVO 840 128GB SSD and I am trying to clone it to my new EVO 850 500GB drive attached to my laptop via SATA-to-USB cable. The 128 is my C: drive with WIN 7 pro and some programs. I made an image first and stored it elsewhere first . I get the message in the title about 20 seconds after starting clone process. It's the first time I've encountered an error cloning a drive.

Last week I cloned a HDD to another EVO 840 without issue, but it was in a second bay in that laptop.

Would I be better served pulling my D: drive temporarily and putting target SSD in that bay and cloning then? Or restore image I made to new drive?

Answer:Start-up Test Failed - Short DST: FAILED

Sounds like a failing hard disk, but the overheating thing is worrisome.

The TOSHIBA MK6465GSX is a 2.5" form factor SATA drive, 9.5 mm thick. You should be able to replace it with any drive with the same dimensions. (You probably can use a thinner drive, but a spacer may be needed to mount it.) That includes SSDs that are intended as laptop HD replacements.

I see that there are a couple of YouTube videos showing how to replace the HD for your model laptop.

Bought Christmas 2011 and stopped working 10 days later. Took a week for Lenovo to get it from my house to their repair centre and another week to tell me that the motherboard needed replacing. However, the part was not in stock and nobody knew when it would be! Emailed and phoned on a daily basis to be told the same thing - part not in stock and nobody knows when it will be. Turned to reseller in despair and was offered a replacement FOC if I returned the faulty unit. Great - except Lenovo would not now give it back to me! The reseller intervened and I finally got it back. After being told that the motherboard needing replaced was a 'known issue' - but more because of the horrible (lack of) customer service - I am happy to report that I got a higher spec (higher cost) Acer for the original price of the Lenovo as a gesture of goodwill. Learn a lesson, Lenovo! PS. I even wrote to "DB" - GM at Lenovo UK - but he has chosen to ignore my letter.

Answer:Failed Z570 - failed customer service

Hi JPWOWS,

Thank you for your feedback. I'm not aware of the z570 motherboard replacement, but I'm sympathetic to the service experience you have encountered. I do agree that sometimes there should be a different way of handling a case based on situation. Replacement of new unit could be initiated earlier when there is no confirmation on the parts expected arrival date.

Anyhow, i'm sorry for your case.

Best regards,
Cleo

Hi

I've been tasked with 'fixing' my girlfriend's friends laptop and have been given a pretty vague description of the problem, so I'll try to give as much detail to you as possible in the hope that you can help.

The laptop is running Vista Home Premium SP2. She has AVG Free 2012.0.2242. She uses Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m and IE 9.0.8122.16421. Every time she tries to download a file with Chrome and IE she gets a "Failed - Virus scan failed" message. She hasn't tried Firefox, but I have, and can download with it fine.

I have run a few tools (ccleaner, spybot, spywareblaster, adaware) but the problems haven't stopped. I also noticed it had proxy settings for http and secuure pointing to 127.0.0.1:49161 with the proxy exception for "<-loopback>.

Hello and welcome to Tech Guy. I am sorry that you are having troubles with your computer and will try my best to help you. I know that being infected is very frustrating, but I will be here to help you through the whole process of cleaning. Removing malware can be difficult and complicated and will most likely take many steps, so please stick with me until I have declared your computer clean. I always recommend printing my instructions before following them in case you cannot keep this webpage open. Please be sure to alway follow all steps exactly as they are written and let me know what happens each time. Stop and ask if something unexpected happens or if you are unsure of how to proceed.

Please respect my volunteered time and stay with me until I declare your computer clean. If you are going to be delayed for a while, please let me know.

This can be indicative of the latest ZA infection, or it can be a corrupted AVG. Let's check it out with this scan:

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Hi folks - I use Bit Defender Virus V10 protection. While I've had a virus on occasion currently the report states I have 10 viruses, 1 on my C drive the rest on my back up disk F Drive. This time I noticed "virus disinfection failed, move failed" on several. A deeper scan produced more viruses. Does this mean my PC is still infected and Bit Defender was unable to remove suspect files? I've tried to find these files and manually delete them, but I must be doing something wrong. ------------------
As it looks like Hard Disk issue, I ran the "Hard-Disk Test", but Hard-disk test shows all are PASSED.
It is confusing whether it is really Hard drive issue?
Do I need to replace the Hard drive?
If so, can I go for any hard drive or only Toshiba? any issue in using other HD will have any issue with my mother board?

Please advise.

Help!

I just downloaded the unvenerable SP2 update and started to install it on my wife's system when the PC locked up. I had to restart the system in order to get out of the "lockup". Upon doing so, I received a blue screen which says "Process 1 Initialization Failed" and some other garbage about changing BIOS settings and or starting in Safe Mode.
Needless to say nothing works! Arrg!

Please help before the Mrs. hangs me out for hurricane Jeanne to carry me off to some desolate island without MY PC.

TIA

I forgot to turn off the external cooling fan when closing the laptop(putting it to sleep). It eventually drain the battery and didn't hibernate gracefully & caused disk error. 1. Win 7 Home premium couldn't boot up, tried repair & just hang. 2. Diagnostic disk check shows 303 error, which means the disk is toasted. Ordering new disk. 3. I have the HP recovery disks but they are not bootable. All the other recovery solutions rely on running recovery manager but I can't even load windows. 4. I tried to find win 7 iso file but they are no longer available or the OEM product key won't let me download one from microsoft.http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 5. I have backup all the important files using Paragon so I am ready to wipe the disk clean. What should I do next to reinstall the system?

I'm running a program which becomes highly unstable when I ALT-TAB out of it unless explorer.exe is shutdown. This worked well until yesterday, I would just restart explorer.exe and resume normal usage.

After restarting explorer.exe and when I try to open any folder I get this error:

"The Remote Procedure Call failed and did not execute."

RPC is Started and Automatic in services.msc. RPC Locator is not started and on Manual.

Please do not tell me to restart. The computer carries out file server tasks using Wampserver and it thus inherent that shutting down is to be avoided. Moreover, this issue did not occur before so it is a problem with Windows, not a built-in limitation of any sort.

Answer:Restart explorer.exe failed, RPC thing failed to run

Hi, well the obvious question is what is this program that is so unstable? Have you thought of running a batch file to close explorer.exe .Something like :- taskkill /im explorer.exe /f saved and run as a .bat file will stop parent and child objects . You could add the errant program to the taskkill bat file and adding explorer.exe at the end will have the program closed and explorer.exe opened.

The bad news is the RpcSs service cannot be stopped and restarted by the net stop command, IT has to be by a restart.. see recovery under the service properties, You can ignore the RpcSs locator service it is by default manual.

has anyone ever got an error message while booting windows vista that said "the user service failed failed the logon"?
i had it happen twice today, after the first time i thought my profile was messed up so i used killdisk to wipe my drive and i reinstalled vista, but after reinstalling vista and i installed zonealarm and it's toolbar i got the same error message, from what i found out on the web about the error "i used my hp laptop which is running xp home edition and it too is running zonealarm with no problems" i found out the easiest way of restoring my profile is to go into safemode and run system restore" now vista is running fine.
and from what i read on another forum that zonealarm toolbar is powered by conduit and another on the same forum person said it is malware and i agree it kept defaulting my search engine back to zonealarm even though had zonealarm set not to. plus it's a pain to remove, now im running another firewall i never had any problems with.:-D

*******NO COMBO FIX LOG IS ATTACHED***********First, thank you for what you people do here. I suddenly began receiving the error "Windows - Delayed Write Failed. (Failed to save all the components for the file \System32\0000390c. The file is corrupted or unreadable. This error may be caused by a PC hardware problem)In addition, my desktop went black and lost my desktop icons. A box popped up saying I needed to purchase some time of computer fix. Researching the problem, I came across a forum that suggested running ComboFix from your site, which I did. After running it, I found the warning not to run it unless specifically instructed to. In any event, I did run it and currently my desktop icons are back, however my desktop background is still black and I have a new icon on my desktop that is a red circle with a white X on it. Please let me know what else I should do, if anything. I have not deleted ComboFix.exe from my computer or performed any other tasks. And again, thank you for what you do. Warmest regards

I have an Inspiron 5150 that has lost motherboards.  First board went years ago (Mfg COMPEQ) and was replaced.  The replacement lasted until recently.  I have three dead boards (two new marked Vendor: GCE) that won't boot due to probably memory slot mismounting or failed ball solder of a chip near the video card (that PUSH notation for positioning the aluminum plate on the video card perhaps causing excess pressure to be applied when inserting the video card, bending the board and perhaps breaking ball solder connections on neighboring IC).  Fed up with failed motherboards that won't boot, I went back to the first replacement which has major white noise from the speakers.  This boots consistently but I can't clear the noise.I wonder if the Sigmatel STAC9750T, used on all the boards, is bad or if the implementation on newer boards allows the chip to be recognized by drivers properly preventing the white noise. If the chip is bad then it can't be fixed.  The close leads are just too much for my 68 year old eyes to solder in place.  The components used on the newer boards indicate that a different approach in implementation is used and those I can swap to the older board.  This might allow the STAC9750T to be recognized by Dell drivers and some floating gate input put right. But if the chip itself has gone bad then I won't.  I'd appreciate an answer for this.  Thanks.soyrunner

Answer:STAC9750T failed or failed implementation?

Other than to try replacing the chip, there's no answer to this.  There are dozens of components on a mainboard and many  meters worth of solder traces all laminated together.  There's no magic way to know which component - or which solder joint has failed -- other than to replace the parts one by one.

Hello,

This is my first post to this site and I'm hoping I can find the help I've been looking for. I've been asked to fix a relatives computer (Windows Vista, 32 bit) and it seems to have the ZeroAccess malware that prevents downloading. If the overall process is the same, I have downloaded FRST and will run it with an experts approval. I will then post the scan log so a fix list can be generated.

I will only be able to work with the infected computer until around 7 oclock. I understand if there is not enough time to fix the computer but I can at least remove the malware if a fix list can be generated. I will then run MSE and malwarebytes until I can continue work with the computer next week. Can someone verify this approach?

Thanks,
Matt

Answer:Failed- Virus scan failed

I am still interested in fixing this issue if anyone is willing to help. I am not very familiar with ZeroAccess malware and any help would be appreciated. Thanks again

Glad to find a place that might actually respond..

Here is what happens:

I'll be playing a game online, most likely Call of Duty, and talking with my teammates over TeamSpeak (voice chat program, if you were unaware). A half hour or so into the game, I will get disconnected or timed out. It will still let me connect back to the game once, but I will get disconnected again. Any attempts to scan/ping gaming servers will result in the error message "Socket failed" and "Bind failed", the internet then refuses to work and I have to reboot.

Unfortunately, this little problem has probably cost my team 2 matches in the last few das, any help would be greatly appreciated, here is my system if it helps any:

2.8 GHZ Pentium 4 with HT
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro
80 GB HD
512 MB DDR RAM
Cable internet connection shared on a wireless router
Windows XP Home

Anything else you need to know?
Thanks!

Xp would not start because my hard drive went south. At least that's what Dell says. They got into my system to take a look see, and the conversation lasted all but a few minutes. Apparently that was the problem the whole time and i didn't know it. I have a refurbished one on order and hopefully it will be here soon. Gonna do the surgery myself. It looks pretty easy. I think installing the new burner was a little more diffucult. I didn't want to spend a whole lot because i'm gonna get a new computer in February. Any advise would be appreciated.

Answer:XP failed because hard drive failed....

Remember when installing the drive to unplug the computer and take out the battery if it is a laptop. Also avoid carpet or any static.

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on a problem I have with an asus barebone vintage V3-P5945G.

I am at the end of my tether with this problem, this is the spec of the machine.

asus barebone vintage V3-P5945G
Intel 3.2Ghz 800FSB LGA775
OCZ Value Pro 512Mb DDR2 PC5400 /667Mhz
80GB Seagate SATA II

I am not sure if this is a problem or just a error message that doesn't really matter. When you power on the machine it posts and gives the following error message.
"overclocking failed or overvoltage failed!
Please enter setup to re-configure your system"
F1 to load Setup or F2 to load defaults

If you choose F2 the system loads into windows fine and works as normal, I have not tried overclocking this system or changed anything in the BIOS.

I have tried updating the BIOS to the latest version with no success and also reset the jumbers on the board but this error continue's to persist, I have seen this error on two systems now the first which had been up and running for 2 years then it displayed the message and the 2nd up for 6 months then it displayed the same message.

Please help!!!

Thanks

First My computer specs are

Intel(R) pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200
2.20 GHz
2 GB RAM

Mother Board is Asus P5GC - MX/1333

Now, I turn on my computer today and it booted up. Not like earlier, it was really slow, it took loads of time to react to the Right Click > Refresh too. So I restarted it. Computer restarted, but the following message came

overclocking failed or overvoltage failed

Then it got some options, F2 to load default settings and F1 to reset settings or something. I did F1. In the very first screen, I think all the options are set to 'Device not found' or something. However, I changed to the tab where I can change the boot priority, and saw floppy disk is NO 1 ! I changed NO 1 to CD/DVD and NO 2 hard disk.

Then I restarted and it came OK.

However, after that shutdown it, tried to start again after few minutes. There was nothing ! Just a black screen. No even that 'beep' sound (that's the sound which confirms POST is OK right? ), and ASUS logo also didn't come!

I shutdown the PC again and removed the cover, removed the RAM and placed it back, and rebooted. That time it worked but again the error message. I gave F2. Then worked.

Then whenever I do a restart, it comes to the complete black screen without even that 'beep' sound and startup display with ASUS logo. When I do a complete shutdown and boot again, it comes to the message, after dealing with F2, windows loads.

Apart from those, I monitored the following

Last night, I went to bed with the computer on (as I always do). This morning I awoke and the computer was sitting on the motherboard splash screen (like when it boots up) but did not move. So I rebooted. The computer rebooted and sat at the mother board splash screen indefinitely. I let the computer sit off for a bit and unplugged my external hard drives connected by usb, and then rebooted again.

The computer went past the motherboard splash screen and gave me this message:

"Overclocking failed or overvoltage failed, press F1 to run setup, press F2 to load default values and continue."
I don't really know what overclocking is so I'm pretty sure I haven't overclocked the computer? At least not on purpose.

It's an asus mother board with a Brand New (installed yesterday) hard drive. Pentium 4 3ghz, 1024mb ram.
What should I do?

thank you,

I have actually been getting this error for the past month, at least since March 29th. I've made several attempts to work around it but to no avail. It appears that there is an error with the other browsers as well. I have searched for solutions for this for several weeks, none of which fit my problem. I uninstalled my clamwin antivirus in favor of Windows Security Essentials, though, most people have fixed this problem by messing with AVG? I don't think I have AVG on my computer?

Anyway, if someone knows how to solve this problem please let me know, I'm willing to try anything.

Hello All,I've made check-up on my X230 with the results "X230 Targeted read test failed" and "SMART short self-test failed".In addition there was the error code WHD01V00I-WHOXQM. Does anybody know what does it mean and what should be done in this case? Thanks in advance for the help,Gena

Answer:X230 Targeted read test failed, SMART short self-test failed

Hi, Gena

I did some research on your issue and I found this thread. The general consenus by the community is this: When you run those tests and receive a status of "Failed" on a sector, that means the drive is beginning to fail. If you haven't already, I recommend running a ChkDsk (check disk) which can found by navigating to "Computer" and then right clicking on the drive (most likely C:\, the main drive). Select "Properties" from the drop down menu and a new window will appear. Select the tab "Tools." You should see an option that says "Check now." If you select that, the computer will start checking the drive for errors. ChkDsk will take a while to run, and you will likely have to reboot the machine for it to commence, but it should tell you the status of your drive.

Good luck, and let me know if I can assist you further,
Adam

We have discovered, that if we uncheck the Generate reports while trying to run the online restore, that it will work. We are unsure yet what exactly is causing the issue, but unchecking Generate Report allows us to move forward and complete the process.

Did you make the backup DVD?

You can make the ISO from exe.

Check this post by BillWindows.

Upgraded, but changed my mind (want clean install, help!)

Then boot from that to completely wipe your disk and reformat, make sure you have your key for when you start the installation. If you have a Windows Live account use that.  Does this just mean the HD is not responsing...? I checked all connections and they seem fine. HD is over 10 years old...

Answer:On Bootup It says Primary Drive Failed Slave Drive failed.....

Probably the HD, but you should try another device (HD or CD-ROM) in the motherboard IDE connector to make sure the motherboard controller hasn't failed.  If more than 1 device on IDE cable, the failure of 1 will cause the error you see.

Answer:Lenovo y50 failed to boot (default boot device missing or boot failed)

Hi Oldsm66 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.
You may want to check for the hard drive integrity .
If you have a spare harddrive to boot from or use a rescue USB drive to boot into and run diagnotics .
You can also try to back up your files from the original harddrive once booted from the rescue media if needed.

Update us how it goes.

good evening people.

I am using Y410p, running Windows 8.1.

I was downloading files using P2P,
then I get some error related to disk.
but my whole system works perfectly, no affection on the performance.
so, I decide to reboot.

here, the problem comes.

first, I got the 'Automatic Repair' during boot,
then it reboots.
this time, with BSOD stating UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME.
then it reboots again.
just black screen. nothing more.

---

I did experienced this before.

what I do;
1. shut down
2. edit BIOS to boot using 'Legacy'
3. I boot using Windows 7 USB
4. I choose 'Custom Install'
5. I formatted the 'D' drive
6. reboot
7. manage to boot into Windows 8.1

I tried to re-do these steps, no avail
? stuck at 'Setup is starting' screen (waiting for 2 hours and nothing happens)

I tried using the OneKey Recovery, no avail.
the screen just turn black and nothing happens.

---

so;
? how do I manage this? (I really hope that no disk formatting will be involved)
? what is actually happening to my laptop? impending disk failure?
? if this is benign, it is preventable? I really don't like suprises... (I am in the middle of finals by the way)

thanks in advance guys!

Answer:how to tell a HDD has failed?

good evening

I am using Y410p.

these are the symptoms;
1. Automatic Repair boot loop (then the screen turn black)
2. when I tried to enter Windows 8.1 Safe Mode (Shift+F8, while booting using Legacy), I got the "Check cable connection! PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM" error message
3. I used DISKPART from Windows 7 USB Install Media, the HDD where Windows 8.1 is installed only showing Disk0 (DISKPART only shows disks? not partitions?)
4. I heard a soft, high-pitched sound
5. I tried using the OneKey Recovery. the screen just turn black
6. I tried installing Windows 7 but get stuck at "Setup is starting" screen
7. sometimes, I managed to get pass the "Setup is starting" screen. but the partition where Windows is installed shows empty (the partition space is 880GB, and the free space showed also 880GB)

so, is my HDD failing?

Well... so much for the nearly flawless conversion to the new computer. I was tired last night. I've been having an issue getting data off the old computer because of permissions within XP. Spoke to the IT guy at work and he seemed to think that just moving the old drive to the new computer might allow me to access the data without having to worry about permissions since XP wouldn't boot from that system and it would just act like a slave drive.

So... I pulled the drive from the old computer. In the process, it would seem that I somehow grabbed the floppy ribbon cable instead of the IDE one. After realizing my error after what I though were a couple of "gently" failed attempt to get the cable to fit, I realized it. However, when I looked at the pins on the HDD, at least one was bent.

I gently -- again, I thought -- repositioned the pin(s) and found the right cable and was able to plug it in. The new computer didn't recognize the drive at all. Put it back into the old computer and now it's also not recognizing the drive in the BIOS and won't boot up.

Any thoughts? There's a small LED light on the "bottom" of the drive, but it only lights up for about 2 or 3 seconds during the initial POST. It's pretty much acting like it's not getting power now. Neither computer's BIOS will recognize it.

I'm pretty upset with myself. I have *most* of my digital photos backed up, but there are several months missing. Some... Read more

Question: Ext.HD failed

I purchase a few days ago this "WD Elements 1TB External Desktop Hard Drive USB 2.0 - Black " which worked & showed up in win explorer.

I backed up my two PCs with EaseUS backup program & the backup system files showed in the Ext.HD.

Today intended to recover one system on an empty HD but the EXT.HD does not show up in the win eplorer, nor in the EaseUS program.

How now can I get rid of the files in it before I return it to Amazon? ...thanx .......nick

Answer:Ext.HD failed

If you have a copy of windows, you can run through the installer, and once you get to the part where you choose which drive, you could format it there. But this would require you to have a copy of windows. Also, I am unsure if it would even show, as you aren't seeing it within windows.

Question: CPU Fan has failed

I am getting a CPU Fan has failed, press F2 to continue everytime I boot up my pc, but am unable to go any further. pressing F2 doesn't allow me to go any further. I'm trying to get into the Bios so I can hopefully turn this error message off. I have no clue why it is giving me this error, as all my fans are working. Can anyone please help?

Answer:CPU Fan has failed

You need to post more info; what is the make and model of the computer you have? If its a custom system post the motherboard model, the power supply model, the CPU and the heatsink model, and post all the rest of the specs too.

Is the CPU fan spinning fast or slowly, does it have a wobble? Is the fan connected to the right CPU fan header or some other header?

Also, did this just happen out of the blue or is this a new build or was someone inside the computer doing upgrades or cleaning it?

Question: >CHK DSK< Failed.

I set my pc up to to a CHK DSK on start up, it got through stages 1-4 ok, but on stage 5 i get the BSOD and the following:

Section 5 Initialization Failed
0x00000071(0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000)Click to expand...

Now i can live without this CHK DSK i think, but i need to know where to de-activate it as it is set to run from start up and has failed twice now.

I will keep a close eye on this thread to supply any extra info you might need.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:>CHK DSK< Failed.

What's your operating system? File system? If it is FAT32 you could convert it to NTFS which runs better & is more secure.

Warning: NTFS cannot read FAT32.

Question: S10-2 HDD failed?

Can anyone confirm that my ideapad s10-2 HDD has failed? Windows boot manager fails to start, asking for installation disk and gives a status error 0xc000000f - boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.Onekey recovery also gives a disk read error and fails to boot. If this is the case, I presume I can buy a replacement HDD. I had backed up my data, but hadn't made a recovery disk. Any suggestions on how I can reload W7 and all the appropriate drivers etc? Thanks

Answer:S10-2 HDD failed?

Hello, I believe it would be best to contact Lenovo support- and Microsoft firstly, regarding your preloaded OS. Wish you luck!

Question: HDD failed

The hard drive in my machine failed. I am installing a new one but I need to know where I can get an installation disc for it. Thanks..........

Answer:HDD failed

Hi: You should be able to order recovery media from HP by visiting your specific model notebook's support and driver page. Select the operating system your PC originally came with and the last item on the driver page should be a link to order recovery media if you live in the USA.

I have an HP Pavilion 754n, running Windows XP. My son tried to install a video card (nVidia GeFORCE Mx 4000, 128 MB DDR).

When he tried to reboot the computer he received the error message "CPU fan failed. Have system serviced immediately. Press f2 to continue to boot. Otherwise the system will power down in 5 seconds."

However, the fan was running.

He removed the video card and tried to reboot again. Same error message.

And the fan was running.

He pressed F2 many times and the computer shut down after 5 seconds.

He went to advanced setup in the BIOS and it said that the RPM of the fan was "0" although the fans were spinning. It also said the temperature of the computer was 27 degrees C.

What gives?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Furgs

On some sites I get a pop-up that says "an add-on failed to load" or something like that. Is there anyway to tell which add-on IE is talking about?

Answer:An add-on failed to run

Possibly,
If you have the Command bar in your page view/ Right click above the browser bar and click on Command bar,
Click on Tools/ Toolbars/ Disable add-ons,
There might be a listing of problem add-ons.

Question: I failed the A+

I took the essentials and technician today. Technician I took first with a passing score of 740 (700 needed to pass). Then I took a 20 minute break outside and had lunch, came back in and took the essentials with a failing score of 655 (675 needed to pass).

Kinda pissed, spent $145 on one voucher and now I need another to re-take. Thats $431 total if I can pass the essentials if I decide to take it.

Answer:I failed the A+

I've heard they've started to make the A+ harder. I know when I took it; it was really easy. Sucks to lose that money though. What did you use to study?

Thought I check for any Windows updates, there is an update available and it's XP SP3, when clicking 'install updates' then 'I agree' in the window that pops up it fails to download even though the green status bar in the download window goes all the way to the end. Any ideas why SP3 fails to download?

Answer:XP SP3 failed

Are you sure its failed to download and not just failed to install?
