Disabling video thumbnails whilst keeping image thumbnails enabled?

Question: Disabling video thumbnails whilst keeping image thumbnails enabled?

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hiya. I'm trying to disable the Thumbnails for those ugly "Live Folders". However, I can't seem to figure out how to turn them off without also disabling the thumbnails for individual image files.

Does anybody know how to disable *just* the Live Folder thumbnails?

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on a Dell Inspiron 15 3521 and I was wondering... how do you disable the thumbnails for only the videos?
I already have a new driver installed last week and on the old driver, the videos, while browsing on my Explorer program, had no thumbnails while the photos and DVD video files do (and that's how I like it). Plus, swmedia.dll was not in my old driver (and the same applies to my new driver).
Any kind of help is highly appreciated.

I have unchecked the option to 'show icons instead of thumbnails' (view>options>folder options) and I have checked 'show icons' (performance>advanced) but still I get icons instead of thumbnails. I have closed and restarted file explorer multiple times to no change. I have posted the screenshot below to show the current settings. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Answer:Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

I admit, I love Vista and since drivers have become stable, I’ve not had any big issues, but there is one thing that I’ve been trying to figure out for a while now with no success and its really bugging me.

Live preview thumbnails seem to go “blank” after a while. If an app has been running for a while, the live preview gets replaced by a static icon. Seems to be some sort of resource management issue, but I’ve been trying to figure out if there is some sort of configuration that can be adjusted to increase some sort of resource limit or turn it off altogether.

Answer:Vista Live Thumbnails become Dead Thumbnails

i've formatted, but last i checked, i had realtime previews of windows, only if the window was open

if i minimized the window, i would only get static images. Are you having the same problem, that might be the way it's supposed to work, i' m not sure

After playing around with the operating system I found that I don't like the thumbnail (previews) from the taskbar. Is there a way to disable this in Windows 7?

I don't have the same screen as vista as listed here: Thumbnail Previews on Taskbar - Enable or Disable - Vista Forums

Answer:Disabling taskbar thumbnails (previews) in Windows 7

Just do it the same way as the tutorial, threw gpedit.msc. Enable it, click ok or apply and restart.
Or, if you don't want to restart..right click on the task bar and click on task manager, go to the process tab, select explorer.exe and end process. Then to restart it, click file on the task manager menu bar, new task-explorer.exe-OK. And it will work after that instead of restarting the computer.

Hello there. I really enjoy Windows 7, but recently I ran into a problem that keeps making me swear like a sailor and elicit tremendous amounts of HATE when I try to solve it (and can't).

The thing is, all of a sudden more than half of the folder thumbnails in my Music library disappeared. But that's not the case... explorer.exe started to hang up (as in, raises the CPU usage to 100% and stops operating until killed and relaunched) whenever I tried to open any folder without a thumbnail. So I deleted the thumbnail cache and the missing thumbnails still wouldn't generate. F5 had no use. I thought my HDD failed and the folders were damaged, but then I went into the Music folder instead of library (while in "Table" view) and everything worked normally. However, if I ought to choose any view that has thumbnails, Explorer hung up when I would try to do anything with a folder that has no thumbnail. Heck, it even hung up when I changed the view or just selected a folder.

So it all came down to:
If thumbnails are off ("always show icons" thing), everything seems to work fine.

This is clearly not a hard drive issue, as I managed to copy the folders to another disk (via command prompt, because Explorer hung up everytime I tried) and it was still the same.
Neither this is a library issue - with thumbnails turned off, the library works.
The music files themselves are OK too.

I already tried:Resetting the thumbnail cache countless times (both with Windo... Read more

Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

I recently had to retrieve some accidently deleted photos from my daughters memory card from her digital camera, and the thumbnails of the images look great but when I go to open those images, they seem corrupt, as some of them are jumbled and some of them only half show up with grey above or below leaving only half the image. Again, the thumbnails appear perfect. We are desperate to get these photos, as they are of my daughters first baby born only a week ago, and they are the first pictures taken of him! Can anyone help please???

Today thoise images dissapeared, they have been replaced by Realplayer, "R" symbol. I don't know what I did to change things ,hopefully you can tell me.

Answer:Thumbnails lost image

DAN58, The first thing I'd try is to open that folder and delete any thumbs.db files. They are hidden files so you have to go into Folder Options>View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply/OK then restart your computer. If that doen't correct the problem click Start>Run and type in:

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

Click OK

Restart your computer.

Note that the spacing is important.

When I open a picture folder/photo album on my computer, and the "view" option is set to thumbnails, the thumbnails aren't actually "thumbnails" of the picture its representing. Instead its the picture of the standard picture icon inside of a box. Rephrasing, the thumnails don't show pictures, they show the standard picture icon.

I don't know what happened, because they use to show pictures, and then it randomly stopped.

I use a dell laptop, with windows XP professional.

oh and I should note that this problem only occurs with jpeg and gif pictures.

I have this weird problem with image thumbnails on my Windows 8.1 system. I use BabelSoft's Media Preview, and even though I have it set to create thumbnails for all image formats, some images just don't show as thumbnails. Instead they show as an icon of the program I use to open images by default, Irfanview. What's even weirder is how sometimes, without me changing any settings or anything, these images will suddenly show as thumbnails, and then they'll go back to icons again. It seems to be affected by me rebooting the computer. I'll turn the computer on, and an image will show as an icon; I'll do a restart later, and the image suddenly shows as a thumbnail, or vice versa. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Answer:Problem with image thumbnails

Jesse Newell...

A little bit about the installation process. BabelSoft's description of "all image formats" is likely incomplete. Looks like basically what happened was that Babelsoft did change the formatting for all types of images that it registers during its installation as image formats. The ones that it did not register are probably all of a certain type or types, like gifs or pngs or something like that. Those would be the ones appearing as Irfanview icons.

To possibly further complicate things, Babelsoft may have created its own dialog for thumbnails that will work only for the pic types it registers and then it may also have taken from Windows the functionality you would normally have for setting folder thumbnails. Next time you open the pics folder, using Windows, take a look at the setting for icon viewing. It is top right of the folder dialog with a drop down arrow. Maybe you could check to see what happens if you set that to Large Icons. There is another setting to look at, too. On the left side of the pics folder, toward the top, you will see "Organize". Click on that and select "Folder and search options" from the list. Click on the View tab and then the first check box should be unchecked.

Basically, Babelsoft could have performed a hundred or more registry tweaks to achieve what you are seeing (even have removed keys). Clearly, the software does not recognize all pic types for thumbs, so I wonder if you ... Read more

Suddenly a few days ago, explorer stopped loading all thumbnails in any image folder with more than a dozen or so pictures. It's not even slowly trying to cache them, it just stops.
It will generally load the first dozen, and if I scroll to the bottom of the folder, the last dozen or so are loaded with everything in between just image icons.

If I refresh, maybe 1 or 2 extra thumbs load. But strangely, if I delete 1 picture, often many thumbs will load.

I searched google and this site, but none of the thumbnail issues seemed to be close to mine.

EDIT: Looks like after rebooting into safe mode and cleaning the thumb cache seems to have fixed the issue. Thank's broe23 for the help

I have Windows 8 64 bit, Windows 8 Photo Viewer and various applications (e.g. Lightroom) to process Panasonic Lumix RAW files in .RW2 format.

I can't find a way of displaying the image thumbnails in Windows Explorer. I've tried to install various versons of Microsoft camera codecs but they don't install in Windows 8 64 bit.

Is there a solution to this?

Answer:How to View Panasonic RAW (.RW2) Image Thumbnails?

The Microsoft Camera Codec packs come through Windows Update in Windows 8/8.1. I've just looked and it appears the last one was December 2013, so I guess it depends on how old your Camera is.

If you scroll down to the 'References' section at the following link, you can see what Panasonic camera's were added in that update and also all the camera's supported up to that point.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (KB2899189):
Update adds support for many camera-specific file formats in Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1: December 2013

It's about time we had an ISO approved camera raw format standard, as it's looong overdue.

About a week ago thumbnail images suddenly stopped showing (mainly .jpgs & .pngs) in several of my folders. It
seemed to be fairly random across all folders & drives (2 partitions on C drive) whereby some display correctly
within a folder but most now show as windows photo viewer icons.

Images uploaded in "My Pictures Folder" on C drive are not affected.

I have done the obvious:-
1. in folder options > always show icons, never thumbnails (unchecked)
2. deleted & rebuilt the thumbnail cache
3. run malwares scans (system is clean)
4. done restores (Microsoft & Adobe updates)
5. selected medium icons to view . . .

Also, using the Windows Photo Viewer default — preview pane no longer works — if Id/click on an image it opens
in a new window.

I had been using Mystic Thumbs successfully for a while to enable me to see .svg, .pspimages & .psd files (as a
graphic designer I want quick access to these) Uninstalling it hasn't made any difference.

Any help is much appreciated!

I am using windows XP as my OS.

Recently my thumbnails have been displaying the wrong images. This seems to be across the board and affects all folders in each of my hard-drives. It first started out that when I opened a folder with blank/manila image and then closed it, it would then display a image of some random thumbnail from some other folder and then adopt that image as it's default thumbnail image. Now the folders just display wrong thumbnails regardless if they have been opened or not. I have tried thumbnails refresh, didn't work. I tried deleting the thumbnail.db for a folder, that didn't work either.

What solution is there to correct this? I have probably thousands of folders that display the wrong images in thumbnail view.

Hi all!

Hope I've chosen the right subforum for this question. My problem is as follows:

When I use image searches, such as Google or Yahoo, the thumbnails are not displayed. I either get red crosses (in IE) or small blue lines (Firefox).

Both browsers are on the latest update. I'm on Vista Home, also with the most recent updates.

I've already tried some recommendations on other forums - I re-installed Java & Flash. I've already tried to install an earlier version of Java, because I first thought the recent Java update may have caused the problem. All that didn't work.

Other picture sites like Flickr work well, so I don't think it has anything to do with my internet connection.

I'd be forever grateful if anyone could help me sort this out.

A week or so back, I installed Picasa, but when I did, it broke SageThumbs and removed the "edit with Gimp" context menu (I was able to work around this via Default Program Editor; It didn't legitimately fix the problem, though). Now any images display the default image icon instead of preview thumbnail.

I uninstalled Picasa, but that didn't work. Then I uninstalled and re-installed both Gimp and SageThumbs, but neither the thumbnails are displaying, nor the "edit with Gimp" context menu (which I have worked around).

I am unable to preview image thumbnails when browsing folders on my 64bit vista machine.

This has been an issue from when I purchased the computer about 8months ago, then last month all of a sudden the thumbnails started showing (default opening programme was fireworks t the time), but I changed the default opening programme to Photoshop and now again the problem has re-occured.

In my folder options the 'Alway show icons, never thumbnails' is not ticked, and never has been.

The current default application for .jpegs is Windows Photo Viewer, having previously used Adobe Fireworks and Abode Photoshop at times, no mater what the default programme is I only ever see the default programme icon.

When I change between the views in my folders (Medium Icons, Large Icons, Extra-Large Icon) the actual .jpeg image flashes up as the folder loads and then flashes back to the programme icon.

Any ideas? I really need to get this solved as part of my job involves photography and I need to be able to view thumbnails fast in large folders of photos and open in a range of editing suites.

* I have compared all folder options to the 64bit Windows 7 Machine at work which is fine, all options look to be the same.

Answer:Issue showing image Thumbnails when browsing folders

Hi hollyw,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Here's a tutorial on how to do this in a variety of ways. Try them in the order presented as that's from the simplest to the most complex (even though I imagine you tried the first few already). Note the comment (and link to the procedure) near the top to set the default program to Windows Photo Gallery if none of the other options work (which you may or may not want to consider - or perhaps at least try to see if it works - let us know either way - and change it back if you don't want that as the default): Thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

If that doesn't work, try rebuilding the Icon Cache: Icon Cache - Rebuild to see if that helps.

If that doesn't work, you may want to clear the thumbnail cache (it won't delete anything but the cache and will rebuild itself when you open folders though it may take more time the first time you do so as it needs to do this first). Here's how: Thumbnail Cache.

I hope this helps. If not, post back with results of what you tried and we'll try some different options.

Good luck!

My question is whether or not reinstalling Windows ME will solve my pictures problem, and will such a download of Windows ME include the Kodak program, Paint, and Image Preview associated with Windows ME???
BACKGROUND -- I recently did a few things that brought about a problem. I used Ultra WinCleaner 2002 which deleted many Registry entries, etc., and messed up McAfee Security which had to be reinstalled. I downloaded a PSP program but didn't complete the installation (the program was an upgrade to PSP 7.0, but I didn't have a PSP Program). After these two operations, I found that when I tried with pictures to SAVE AS .bmp the saved file was in an unknown format... thumnails and ImagePreview did not work. File Properties said the files were JPG , but the format was unknown to ImagePreview. Thinking the Kodak program that comes with Windows ME was messed up, I downloaded an Image Viewer called IrfanView and set extensions for all images to use IrfanView. IrfanView worked well , but the SAVE AS problem still existed. I cleared all the extentions from IrfanView and deleted IrfanView. Now the problem is worse and none of my pictures will open in ImagePreview at all, and I virtually can not save any pictures. Is reinstalling Windows ME a good solution and will it not delete documents, pictures, and applications?

Recently digital photos that I have imported into the Digital Image Suite 2006 Library are not showing up in the thumbnails. I can access the photos in slideshows and for editing, but the thumbnails are just gray icons that I have to double-click on to see the photos.

I have used DI for about 3 months, and this week is the first time I've seen this problem. I don't remember changing any settings. Can anyone out there help me through this?

Answer:Solved: MS Digital Image Suite 06 thumbnails problem

A Microsoft forum I posted to provided an answer to this problem that will help others if they are searching this forum regarding the same problem I had:

1. install the Vista compatibility update for MS Digital Image Suite 2006. Find it at (not needed for the Anniversary Edition).
2. start DI and see if blank thumbnails still exist. If not, stop here.
3. If blank thumbnails still exist, close DI and then rename the pictures database called Pictures.pd3. It usually resides at c:\users\>username<\appdata\local\microsoft\pod\pictures.pd3
4. pictures.pd3 can be deleted or renamed. I renamed mine pictures.old.
5. start DI. You will have to re-catalog your images, but the program re-populates your Library folders automatically as you click on the folders. The blank thumbnails will no longer be there.

If you have a problem finding the .pd3 file, go to Start/Search/Advanced Search and check the box "include non-indexed, hidden, and system files" (in case the file resides in the hidden files). Enter .pd3 in the name field and LEFT click the search button.

Whenever I access a folder containing pictures, the thumbnails for them generate -- and I can actually see them. But this only lasts for a few seconds; the thumbnails get replaced by Vista's generic landscape icon. I'm not sure when this problem started -- at first, I was not bothered by it, since I wasn't working with my photos, so I didn't pay attention to it. But it has persisted for at least a month, in all folders with pictures in them. And I've made sure that the "Show thumbnails" options were set in both "Folder Options" and "Advanced System Settings". Maybe it was from me changing the registry a long time ago? I'm not sure. So, if someone knows a key I could check to turn on/off thumbnails, that would be useful.Or, if you have any other idea how this problem occurred, I'd be really grateful. Thank you!

I used a file converter that lets you convert to mp4 for WP.

Or can anybody recommend a video converter I can use?

Question: Video Thumbnails

I'm running Win 7 x64 Home Premium. For some reason, I've lost my video thumbnails. I've tried numerous fixes including checking and unchecking show thumbnails (instead of icons), refresh, deleting the thumbnail files stored in AppData, etc. I can't seem to get them back! .jpg thumbnails appear to be unaffected. Any idea what I can do to fix this (short of a complete reinstall!)?

Thanks so much in advance!

All the best,

Answer:Video Thumbnails

What icons show with the video files?

One person reported this problem, solution was they did not have enough free space on the hard drive, they deleted some large files to free up some space and thumbnailing started to work again.

Our Win 7 computers do not show image thumbnails while user browses folders on a network drive. Instead the default thumbnail icon is shown for all pictures. This seems to be the default behaviour for at least jpg images?? If same folders are moved to local
drive the images thumbnails seems to display normally.
Is it possible to enable thumbnails for network localtions also? We have a gigabit LAN so bandwith is not an issue. It just takes a long time to find anything if thumbnails are not used.

Answer:Image thumbnails aren't displayed while browsing network drives?

You may take the following steps to check if the issue persists.
Enable Thumbnail display on Network folders via group policy:
Note: Group Policy is just for Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate edition.
1. Click Start, type gpedit.msc and press ENTER
2. Go to the following branch:
User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Windows Explorer
3. Double-click the “Turn off the display of thumbnails and only display icons on network folders” option and set it to Disable;
4. Click OK.
If you enable this policy, Windows Explorer will only display icons and never display thumbnails on network folders.
If your system is other Windows 7 edition, you may change it from Registry:
1. Launch regedit from Start Search box.
2. Find the following branch:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
3. Check if there is a key named “DisableThumbnailsOnNetworkFolders”. If not, you may create it with the following value:
Value Name : DisableThumbnailsOnNetworkFolders
Value Data : 1 or 0 (0 is to enable the display of thumbnails on network folders; 1 is to disable it.)
Value Type : REG_DWORD
4. Reboot the computer to check if the issue persists.

Is it at all possible to select the thumbnail that Vista selects for your videos? I read somewhere that Vista uses an algorithm where it automatically takes a snap with Windows Movie Maker when the screen isn't black and that it was impossible to change. Is this true? :(

Attached is a screen shot of a folder that has 3 AVI files in it. It's really not a bog deal, but why are 2 of 'em shown as thumbnails, and one is shown with the VLC Media Player icon. They all have the same extension (.avi) and when I pause the mouse pointer on 'em, they all say "VLC Media File (.avi)". The 'View' setting is set to 'Thumbnails'. So why are they displayed differently when I open a folder? Like I said, it's not really important, and I'm just curious more than anything else....

(the red boxes are where I censored some information I didn't think was needed to get my point across; the black boxes are the thumbnails displayed by Windows)

Answer:Video files - thumbnails or ????

Oh... I forgot to mention that I do have VLC installed, and I use it, so the mystery isn't why I see the VLC icon or why it says VLC in the file descriptions, but why it shows two files as thumbnails, and one with the icon. Why aren't they all thumbnails? or all icons?

I have done a bit of reading about K-lite and codec tweaks etc but find all this a bit daunting. So -

Yes, I told a friend my dilemma and he found a fix just after I posted this! Here's what you do, go to run and input this command:

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

It will re-enable thumbnail loading. I hope the myriad of other people who have had this exact same problem and received no help find this and read it.

Windows xp SP3. I have a bunch of short video clips in various formats such as avi, wmv, and mpeg. Now before I installed and uninstalled this video converting software, I could see the thumbnail for the files in thumbnail view. After I uninstalled it, it reset all the file associations for video files. I reapplied them to media player, but now no matter what I do thumbnails will not load for any of them. I defragged, restarted, did system restore, nothing. Please help me before I go insane.

Oh yea I've already tried deleting the thumbnail file that's hidden. Instead, no new thumbnail file is ever generated.

Hello there,

I'm using Windows 7 just like you all. Ultimate edition, 64-bit. The system is running perfectly without any problems, but I got one issue after two weeks of using Win7.

The problem is that video preview thumbnails are not showing up. "Show thumbnails instead of icons" in view options is checked.

Take a look. On the left side is my HDV camcoder captured files, .mt2 format. But on the right side is my video folder, contains .mp4 and .wmv formats. As you can see .mp4 .wmv thumbnails are missing.

Maybe this is the place where I finally will got the solution.

Answer:Video thumbnails won't show up

Sorry but as I am not able to read the file extensions on the right hand image, they are too fuzzy, I am not in a position to help.
Perhaps if you produce a straightforward screenshot it might help. Also where did the files come from? Are they downloaded or from a camcorder or where?

I have read similar problems on this forum, but, unfortunately, did not solve mine.

After installing a software (I'm not sure which, it could be VLC or ffdshow codecs or videopad), video thumbnails in Windows Explorer would not show a frame from the video, just the icons. I then downloaded a .reg file which restored the video thumbnails, but now it only shows the first frame of the video, which is usually blank. So now all my videos show a blank black picture, which was not so earlier. Before the problem started, it would pick up a random frame from the video...

Could anyone help out, please?

I've started playing around with some video editing on Windows 8 and am finding it very difficult to organise my files because I can't get the thumbnails to show up in explorer. I've googled this fairly extensively, and have tried three solutions to address this problem.
Downloading K-Lite codec pack, which I have since read conflicting information about, as to whether this was a good ideas.
Downloaded, installed and run Media Preview by Babelsoft
Followed the advice here about ensuring that the correct options are selected to force Windows to enable thumbnails.

At this stage, and particularly bearing in mind the K-Lite codec pack, I am concerned that I might actually be doing more harm than good. Therefore I'm looking for any advice about how to resolve this issue.

I have just run Media Preview which found around 1000 video files to generate thumbnails for, however there are simply not showing up in explorer. I have a range of video formats, such as .mov .mp4 .avi that have come from a range of sources, and none are showing the thumbnail previews.

Any advice about what I should try next? I can answer any questions about my set-up and post any necessary screenshots.

This is a well known issue. Don't know what the deal is, but it's been a major thorn in my ass since Vista x64, much more so since Windows 7 though. I've made sure the preview was turned on in the folders options, cleared the cache, and even messed with the registry. Nothing worked. Would re-install the operating system (since I usually noticed it immediately from a fresh install) and it would work properly. Weird bug for sure.

Have you tried reassociating the files with the program to handle them such as right-click on a file and then select open with, then choose a program, then check the box for always use the selected program to open this type of file? Sometimes this fixes it by displaying the thumbs. You can also change the view to another view such as detailed view and back to thumbs to reinitialize this feature under VIEWS function of the opened folder containing the files.

Hey Guys,

First time poster. Here's a bit of a briefing.

Note: using XP!

I've been importing videos from my video camera and the thumbnail has always shown up as first frame from the video. About three months ago i got a new hard drive, so i transferred all the clips...They all still showed the first frame as the thumbnail...

However, not that i've been importing these past three months they only show up as the default movie icon. I thought this wouldn't be that great of an issue, I simply ignored it and carried on.

Now that i have bulked up on my video camera collection (3812 video clips to this date in past three months) it has made it virtually impossible to make this a quick activity when wanting to find certain files, i have to individually watch each and every one until i stumble across the file i want! Which is a massive time waster! And it's only bound to get worst as time goes on.

I decided to reinstall WMP 11, DivX Codecs...No help, then i went and downloaded and installed various codec packs, still no help. I then uninstalled some random codecs in the hope that it wasn't a clash of conflict amongst the lot.

I googled the issue, a lot of the findings linked me to this forum, and found how various people were able to fix the problem by run - > REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL, still no help.

I then followed the proceedings for the Windows Registry Edit in relation to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE as located at Read more

My Video Thumbnails in Windows (File) Explorer have gone and been replaced by the generic Icon for the program I select to play the video files (VLC, GOM etc). It's happened to my AVI and MPG files on ALL my Windows 8 PC's.

The Folder Options are set to "Display file icon on thumbnails" and the Performance Options/Visual Effects are set to "Show thumbnails instead of icons".

I tried using the "Media Preview" program but it only works on about one in a hundred icons.

If it's happening on all my PC's it must be happening to others, any clue how to fix this?

Answer:Video Thumbnails are gone and replaced by Icon

Hello Bazzer, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Usually unless you are using either the Windows Photo Viewer or the default Photos app, thumbnail previews of image files may not work with the program you set as the default program even when you have thumbnail previews turned on.

To fix this, you'll need to set either program above as the default program with all of it's associations.

also would IE 8 Beta be a better option than FireFox thanksClick to expand...

Definatly NO, as IE8 is still beta, while the final version is likely to be good, this current version is still buggy and its never wise to use a beta to try and fix a problem as you may end up with many more issues that you barganed for. Try IE7 with YouTube and see if the thumbnails show.

Hi, yesterday I don't know what I did but suddenly video thumbnails disappeared, so I reinstalled K-Lite Codec Pack MEGA version. I'm using a laptop with Windows 8.1 x64. VLC is the default media player. I've installed MPC-HC and K-Lite Codec Pack MEGA. Everything is up to date.

Once I reinstalled K-Lite MEGA pack, thumbnails appeared again, but now something's wrong. When I open the "Videos" folder, VLC icons don't appear. All icons are blank (there's no icon, just blank space with the file's name below) until the thumbnail is loaded.

Before, ALL icons appeared (VLC icon) and then the thumbnails got loaded. If I refreshed, the thumbnails didn't start to load again, the window blinked for 1 millisecond and then everything was already loaded.

Now, if I refresh, it starts all over again, all icons are blank and the thumbnails start to load again.

I've reinstalled MPC-HC, K-Lite MEGA pack, Disk cleanup thumbnails, show only icons, apply and then uncheck that option... Nothing changes

I don't understand anything. Here's a screenshot in the middle of the process:
There should be VLC icons instead of those blank spaces, and it shouldn't start to load everything each time I refresh.

Answer:Video icons don't show up until thumbnails are loaded

Question, why did you need the Codec pack to begin with? I find they cause more issues.

All my thumbnails load with no problem with windows media player with exception of some types of video files.

May have to reset. Try SFC.

Previously vista explorer used to show a thumbnail of a still image from my video files (avi; divx; etc).

I installed Nero and I think the install went a bit wrong. As I kept getting DCOM errors whenever I viewed a folder in thumbnail view that contained videos. Reinstalling nero solved this problem. However it resulted in explorer now only showing the generic AVI thumbnails.

I have resinstalled FFshow and this has not helped. Has anyone else come across this problem, or something similar whereby thumbnail view shows default generic items instead of the actual image? And more importantly, has anyone else resolved it.

Answer:Missing Video (avi; divx; etc) thumbnails in explorer

Just as I thought. Turns out it was something to do with the registry and explorer losing associations.

Thankfully, someone had already solved the problem with a registry file. I can confirm that I have downloaded this file and tested and it has solved my problem.

Provided is the link to his page

Further to this page is another link that provides various registry files that fix various other file association problems.

This was easy to solve in XP but changing default actions and program/file associations in Vista is completely broken in my opinion.

Hi techs,
Is there a way of disabling video thumbnails on folder icons while keeping image thumbnails enabled (at the same time) in Windows 7 ? I tried all options available in folder options but to no avail. The puzzling thing is that my efforts were successful on two folders but doing the same thing for the rest did not work. Whether this result was random, I dont know. What I did for those two folders was to access folder options from the individual folders (i.e. selecting 'Customise this folder' from the 'View' menu drop-down), everything else failed. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Ok I know many people have this problem and disabling thumbnails does fix it. However I don't want to disable thumbnails. At least not for images.

I have searched for this problem for a long time and noone has a solution. The problem may be either adobe programs making thumbnails (unlikely for me) or more likely, video codec problems.

So how do I stop Windows crashing whenever I open a folder with certain video files in it?

If this cannot be fixed, is there anyway I can enable thumbnail previews for images but not videos?

Answer:Video thumbnails crashing explorer (Vista)

Any ideas peoples?

Hi there. At the beginning I have to say I know option "always show icons, never thumbnails" in folder options but it's not what I want to use because it doesn't solve my problem.

When I was using Windows 7 there was a tool which helps to disable preview of video files. Is it possible to do same in Windows 8? It's very annoying when icons view is set to average and preview is on. I'd like to disable preview of video files permanently. Is it possbile? In every size of icon I want default icon for this extension. In Windows 7 there was no problem to handle with this.

Answer:Disable thumbnails preview of video files only

Did you tried the same tool in Windows8?

In Windows Explorer all videos converted with Any Video Converter have small thumbnails in Windows Explorer. i didn't used to have this problem. I tried for days to figure this out. I did one video with Handbrake and it was a normal size thumbnail for the same video i had problems with using Any Video Converter. How would one a video converter effect how windows processes thumbnails? I tried clearing the thumbnails through CCleaner and the Windows Cleanup. See Screenshot for what I'm talking about. I'm on Windows 10 64 bit. Using Classic Shell.

Answer:video thumbnails size stuck on small

Have you tried going to View in the ribbon on top of explorer and selecting icon sizes?
