Jerky browser scrolling.

Question: Jerky browser scrolling.

Hi,

Had no idea where to post this question, it kind of lands in a grey area, but seeing as my O/S is XP, thought this would be the most suitable place to start.

I have just performed a clean install, and am in the process of adding, all my AV, and program software. I have however noticed, that when I scroll with my mouse wheel, down the page, it kind of ripples rather than smoothly scrolling.

Have I maybe set my screen up at the wrong resolution? I didn't install any monitor drivers during the install, cos hey, the monitor is working after all. Could something be missing though?

It's not a major issue, but I would like to iron out all these little niggles early on to keep things working tip top.
Please feel free to suggest if this post would be better served in a browser area of the forum, or anywhere else for that matter.

Thankyou.

Preferred Solution: Jerky browser scrolling.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Jerky browser scrolling.

Did you install the driver for your video card (and did you obtain it from the oem website)?

Also, please open device manager - any yellow or red symbols?

Question: Scrolling is jerky

I recently downloaded Jing. I used it once, didn't like it and removed it. Since that time I've been troubled with an issue with the screen only when I scroll. Instead of it moving up or down smoothly, it gives the appearance of "refreshing" itself each time. It's unusual, hard on the eyes, and probably shouldn't do that! I've checked mouse settings, screen resolution and can't find a fix!

Ok, onto my second issue.

The computer i'm fixing (3ghz Intel, 512mb Ram) has had scrolling issues before and after the format. It is the same on firefox or IE in that whenever you scroll down a page using either the mouse or the keyboard, it jerks heavily, as if it's loading the whole page again every second.

The mouse is a wired old Logitech model.

I reinstalled xp and now when I scroll it is not smooth. The page jerks along. I tried searching on the net and it said uncheck smooth scrolling - that didn't work. Again searching the net I found it might be in my device manager. I found Video controller vga vcompatible not installed - no driver found I guess. I am not a computer whiz so I am really stuck. Are the two things related? How do I go back to smooth scrolling and how do I find a driver for that uninstalled Video Controller? Or how do I install the controller? Any help would be appreciated. Is may be just me but scrolling up and down through posts in this forum seems slow and jerky compared to eight forums.

If I press the arrow keys to scroll up and down then it scrolls a bit, pauses for a split second and then carries on a bit more before pausing again. Is this just me or is it some design to make it work better on phones or something?

I tried different themes but it is the same.

Answer:Scrolling seems slow and jerky

It may be specific to your system. I don't have this problem. Try another browser.

If anyone having a jerky/stuttering/lagging when scrolling a webpage in Firefox, here's a fix.

Type in "about:config" in Firefox (address bar) and enter general.smoothScroll under filter. Double click on general.smoothScroll to set it to true.

Or else just install add-on smoothwheel.

I don't understand why they didn't set it to smooth scrolling to true in the first place. First I thought Firefox 3.5.1 was buggy and lagging when tryng to scroll but found out that my IE8 scrolling was very smooth.

Please help. I tried this under security but maybe it should have been here. I've check out several boards and seen problems close to mine but the fixes don't work. This started a couple months ago about the time I upgraded Netscape but I can't swear that has anything to do with it. I've always used Netscape because it runs faster for me. When I scroll it is either very slow or it stops for a few seconds and then jerks to catch up. Typing does the same thing. I will type several words before they all of a sudden show up on the screen. All this is happens about half the time. I've noticed even when I play Hoyle card games it sometimes is jerkly. I am mostly looking around Ebay so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I absolutely never open emails with attachments or click on anything in an email. I use Norton Systemworks, Norton Firewall and I've recently used AdAware and CWShredder. I had a tech person "tune up" my computer, rid of temp. files, defragged, antivirus, etc. My computer is only 1 1/2 yrs. old. Please help me and keep in mind I know more about the Internet than I do the computer itself. This has taken all the joy out of being on line.

I'm noticing a weird annoyance when using the mousewheel to scroll in IE7. It jerks about 20 pixels every second for about 5 or 6 times. I think it has to do with the fact that I'm using a Logitech Wireless Mouse but I'm not sure. Has anyone else notice this problem and if so know of a way to fix it?

Answer:Chromebook scrolling jerky and hesitates

Hi croths,

So the step of logging into the Guest account is a great first step. The idea behind is that you wouldn't have any of your personal applications or settings loaded, and can isolate if the issue is related to the software (operating system or hardware). Considering it was better, but not perfect(?) the next step would be do a 'power wash' which will rebuild the OS and let you start over. It's quick and takes just a couple of minutes, but if you have personal data you want to save, you'll need to back that up first.

Here are steps to do a powerwash: http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27685

Next step would be to do a full system recovery, you can download an OS onto a flashdrive and install it onto your Chromebook. Here are steps: http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27637

Finally, if you're still having trouble I would suggest contacting support as it may be a hardware issue we need to address for you.
Hope this helps,Cory

Ok i decided to get rid of my dell 1.8ghz 2gb ram 80gb hdd laptop and bought:

A hp compaq 2.0ghz core2duo, 3gb ram, 320gb hdd just to 'have the best' and now i wish i didnt 'downGrade'. Other specs inc: IE7, xp pro sp3.

Right issue is: Whereever there is a scrolling box or webpage, for instance if i google something then scroll from top to bottom it will be smooth till about half way then it will jerk and be delayed for a second or 2. Its not webpage specific it will happen even if i goto say internet options then advanced tab and scroll on that it will jerk. On the odd occasion it will be SO BAD it looks as if my vga card drivers are not installed. Also if i click something then start typing it will not pickup the first letters/numbers i type, this is also frustrating as if im typing a password it wont pick up the first digits and i have to start again. Also when highligting text it again wont highlight it all it will pause/stop for a second or 2 before highlighting what i want it to. To solve the issue with no luck ive tried the following:

Update my radeon hd 3200 drivers
reformat laptop (xp pro sp3)
Install all drivers possible
control panal>mouse>wheel>1 as following amount of lines per time
control panel>internet options>advanced>uncheck smooth scrolling
control panel>internet options>advanced>uncheck enable visual styles

Now i am stuck on what to do on how to solve this annoying issue, im on the verge of selling up and going ba... Read more

Hello there folks today I got a lovely new white Lumia 1320 which is all great and working well. Except for one thing. In Instagram,WP Central and a little bit in Facebook app when scrolling it jerks alot. It also does it slightly in 6 Tag. Is this a known issue and if so will it be fixed as its driving me mad in an otherwise great device. Is there any temp fix for it?? Never experienced this on WP before. Thanks

I take it that all of your drivers are up to date. Getting drivers for XP x64 can be a bit of a nightmare due to lack of support for x64 XP. There is better support for 64bit OS in Vista and above.

Can you post your full specs. Download and run Speccy for me. Once the program has gathered the required information, go to the top of the Speccy window and do File>Publish Snapshot. Click Yes when prompted. Now copy and paste the URL address that it gives you to your next post.

When did you first notice the issue?

Okay, so my computer is a compaq hp professional. And It's a hand me down but we did get a reboot cd.
A week ago, my computer got a HUGE malware infection and I had to reboot the whole computer. So it's nice and clean now.

But the problem is when I'm on IE or FF, the scrolling is veryveryvery jerky and I took off the smooth scrolling so it would be faster. I even upgraded it. So I'm running on IE7 and FF 3.
Even making the windows smaller and moving them across the screen is jerky.
Help for that, please.

Another thing is that the speakers will not work. And I thought it was just the speakers at first so I tried headphones but that didn't work either. I tried going to the Start -> Accessories -> Volume Control because there was no speaker icon.
And I got this message;
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to the Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware.

And so I followed the directions but I couldn't find that Printers and Other Hardware folder.
So I looked it up online and some suggested to go to the Sounds, Audios, etc folder and make sure it's on speaker. (or something like that)
But in the Audio tab, everything was grayed out.
Please help on that too.

Answer:Jerky Scrolling, No sound from speakers or headphones.

After you reinstalled Windows, did you install video and sound drivers? It sounds like you didn't. The video driver will get rid of the jerky scrolling.Audio drivers will restore sound. Do you have any other cd's for the computer other than the one you mentioned? Your drivers may be on it. If you don't have cd you will have to download the drivers from HP.You can search for the drivers you need at HP support. If you have any problems finding the correct drivers, please post back and let us know the make and model of your computer. http://www.hp.com/#Support

Hi everyone!

I've got a problem with Internet Explorer (who doesn't?). I have a wheel mouse and when I use it to go up and down a page, it used to scroll smooth as silk, but now the screen jerks and lags. Its really annoying. Only been doing it a couple of days. I just upgraded from 128mb to 256mb, and it still does it. This also happens in text documents.

Also, when I open new windows, or when pages load with new windows, they don't pop up anymore, they minimize to the bottom of the screen and I have to right click+maximize to bring it up. About one out of every 10 or so times, they won't come up at all. I can't figure out what is causing this at all.

The first problem might just be some setting with the mouse. I went into Control Panel/Mouse and played around with the number of lines (the default is 3) but it didn't help.

Any suggestions? Both of these problems seemed to have started at the exact same time (about 4 days ago).

I have an HP Pavilion 7960
256 RAM
1.3 ghz
Windows XP Pro

Thanks everyone

Sounds like you have adware/spyware in there somewhere.

First Delete Temp files, Cookies and offline content. To do this,
Open Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/delete cookies/delete files
select off-line content/clear history.
Download cwshredder from here

Close all browser windows (including minimized windows)
Run cwshredder

When it is finished Reboot your computer.

Download Adaware from here

Go here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Make sure you select "Check for updates now" and get the latest reference files.

Run Adaware and hit the Scan now button, make sure Activate indepth scan is selected and then
hit next. After the scan has completed delete everything it finds.

Restart your computer.

Then Download Spybot search & destroy from here. Read the instructions while you're there.

http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.html

Install the program (Close all browser windows) and run it.

Before scanning press "Online" and "Search for Updates"

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click "Check for Problems" and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds in red.

Restart your computer.

Download "Hijack this" from here

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this problem. My computer had been running really slowly, so I decided to re-install the whole lot.

I have everything back up running, but now when I am in my web browser (ie) and I use the scroll button on my mouse (or drag the side bar to move the page up or down) the page moves but it is moving really really jerkily? (kind of like reading pdf files on a slow computer!) It never used to do this before the re-install, even when it was running slowly.

Can anyone think up a reason why? When I get home tonight I am going to try and download firefox and see if it is a explorer thing, but otherwise I'm stuck for ideas.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Answer:After re-install web browser is jerky!

Firstly, have you reinstalled the video drivers? Reinstalling Windows will have wiped them.
If not the "default" Windows ones will be less than optimum.

Secondly make sure "use smooth scrolling" is enabled in IE (Tools-Internet Options-Advanced)

My IE window scrolls uncontrollably. up and down, up and down, and then sits at the bottom for a while and you can't scroll up. frustrating, very very frustrating. virus scan shows no viruses present, ive got spyblaster and spybot protection...anyone know whats up with this?

Answer:Help - scrolling browser

Do you have a scroll wheel on your mouse? it may be that you've inadvertently pressed it as this would produce the seemingly uncontrollable scrolling. Just press it again.

This seems to happen no matter the browser. As i am scrolling up or down the page it will stop or freeze for a split second then continue. I have gone into the scroll settings an unchecked things and tried deactivating addons to no avail in pale moon or firefox to no avail. What global thing could cause this? 3 gigs of ram on windows 7 with a good processor. Nothing in startup other than a few things, i keep tghe machine lean. But it IS my PC at work so maybe a network thing. I can't ask IT to help, as they won't bother with this kind of thing.

I also have another symtom that i think is due to the same problem. When typing the cursor will freeze and the last few letters i typed will not show up for several seconds, then they all are rendered quickly.

Okay... so I recently (at the recommendation of a friend) installed Opera to try it out.

Well I like the browser just fine so far, but there's one problem: The scrolling feature on my touchpad just DOES NOT WORK at all in Opera.

Why?

So far, the following has been suggested:

Someone said "update the driver."
Well may I ask then: FROM WHERE? WHAT DRIVER UPDATE?
The only driver in existence (which I don't even know where I got it...) is the one I have.
It's an Alps touchpad apparently, and I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

Answer:No scrolling in Opera browser? Why not?

Though I use Opera, I am not familiar with touchpads. But while awaiting an answer here, you can also try the Opera support forum, which specializes on this rather unjustifiably neglected browser:

I use Firefox as my main internet browser. I'm occasionally coming across a problem where the internet page I'm viewing will suddenly start scrolling - all by itself, without me doing anything. For example, just a moment ago I was reading a webpage, not touching my mouse or keyboard and suddenly the page decided to scroll down to the bottom. I couldn't do anything to stop the scrolling. I have also noticed this on the odd occasion I have used Google maps. I will be searching a location, and when the map appears, the screen will suddenly start scrolling sideways across the map (to the left).Nothing I do stops the scrolling - I can move the scrollbar buttons, but they just go back to scrolling. All I can do is close the browser screen and start again. It doesn't happen every time, but often enough to be annoying. I have run a virus scan and checked everything I can think to check, but all seems fine. If anyone has any clues as to what the problem is, I'd be grateful to hear it. Is it a Firefox issue? Something else? Thanks.

Answer:Firefox browser automatically scrolling

I had that happen to me quite a few times. You have to wait for the page to completely load. If your scrolling down or have scrolled down before the page loads, when it does load, it will follow your command.

I learned the value of windows back up today. For years I had reformat to fix a messed up computer

I'm not a tard but I can't figure out how to fix my problem

I uninstalled programs most likely including some of the video driver stuff while I was trying to get rid of spy where. I can't find the driver or track down the model type from physically taking the video card out.

The actual problem is that when I use any windows browser or any internet browser it's lags on any scrolling. no other problems even with the file browser.

it's AGP, I don't have the install disc and have had difficulties getting the exact specs from the comp or the card itself

My browser windows, both of them (Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox) are lagging oddly whenever I scroll. There are no other lag issues with them, concerning buttons or loading pages. I've had a problem with the browsers I use hanging. It is most noticeable when I am using the scroll wheel on my mouse, scrolling down a page in an open window. It will hang for 1-3 seconds, as though a script is loading or something. At first I thought maybe it was a script or the page just waiting to finish loading, but I've let everything in the browser window finish loading and the problem just continues.

I thought at first it was a Firefox problem, so I tried IE8 and Google Chrome and the problem persists in those browsers as well.

There is no problem scrolling up, just down.

I've cleaned my system numerous times using Norton 360, Spybot S&D, CCleaner, PC Pitstop Optimize.

I've also thought maybe it was my mouse, so I downloaded new drivers and that solved nothing either.

It isn't causing any major issues, it is just a nuisance that I have been putting up with for a long time and have tried all I know to try to stop the problem with no luck. Now I'm enlisting the help of experts.

Thanks!

Hi there, Im working with a Dell PC at work and my boss reformatted it yesterday. Since then the internet browser has a quite nausea inducing cascading/wave effect when you scroll up or down. Ive searched how to fix it and have tried to "smooth scroll" set it which hasnt made a difference regardless of whether it is ticked or not...Ive seen that sometimes its the video card but i would have thought that since the pc is reformatted that the original settings should mean that this doesnt happen? I could be very wrong... :DAny ideas?

Answer:Browser scrolling funnily..cascade effect

The problem us that you do not have the proper drivers for the video interface. You obtain these from the computer or video card manufacturer.Formatting a drive is a preliminary to a clean install of the OS. In such an install ALL data and settings on the partition are lost.

I wonder if anyone knows how to make auto-scrolling (particularly in browsers) smooth..ie. cut out the jerkiness.?

I have been using Opera for some time now, and it auto-scrolls just beautifully on my 98se. It makes browsing a real pleasure to be reading a page as it scrolls down slowly and silky smoothly.

I would like to be able to have the same degree of smoothness in Firebird(very jerky) and /or MyIE2 (less jerky, but still not usable to read while scrolling)
The reason for this is that I am now finding Opera so buggy, crashing so often that I want to get away from it, sadly I must say.

Any information on how to do this will be very gratefully received.

PcB.

Answer:how can I stop jerkiness in Browser auto-scrolling

If you are using smooth scrolling, the fix is to buy a faster processor. Smooth scrolling takes a lot of horsepower to so smoothly at any speed. I personally don't use smooth scrolling, I prefer to scroll by text rows, even with a fast processor.

Greetings Honorable Geeks:major

As posted in recent weeks, had two destructive malware attacks which leveled me (Thank you TimW for helping me through) The one thing I noticed prior to the malware attacks - is a scrolling browser - so rapid difficult to even type - it is random- shuts down my emails as I type them, and close out any database I have open (work). It will shut down my emails as I type them. (actually just closed out this request for help).

Two weeks ago I finally got my system clean and reset up my system. All fine for a week - and now the rapid scrolling is starting again. I did observe a post in 2005 - that attributed this to a bad mouse - I can get a new mouse. Also the settings on my browser (pops up blocks) keeps turning the settings off. Yes I downloaded all I was suppose to. Have licensed copies of Avast and Mbam - showing no virus.

TimW (Hi TimW) that the Anti malware and anti virus did not protect emails/browser activity (I may have misunderstood). Is there any software I can download to run and or protect browser issues or threats? Thank you! Just trying to stay afloat Anyone else have this issue?

Respectfully
Snapper

Hey guys,

Today, I updated my video card drivers, but put off the restart until later. Now I restarted my machine, but i notice that the screen resolution seems to be a little off from what it says in control panel. (it's supposed to be 1280x1204 but it looks more like 800x600) Also, whenever I shift something on my desktop, or scroll down in a browser, a line runs up or down the screen and then the view shifts. I'm going to run a virus scan later, but I was wondering if it may have to do with the video drivers I installed earlier?

(Latest drivers as of April 2nd 2009(i think) for Nvidia Geforce 7600)

Thanks,

Alias50

Answer:Solved: Screen resolution wrong, wierd browser scrolling

As the problem has only been occuring since you installed the new drivers then yes it is highly likely. You can roll back your drivers by finding your graphics device in Device Manager > Right click and select properties > Select the driver tab then click 'Rollback Driver' any questions or problems let us know.

Hi,

I appear to be having trouble with my firefox browser.

My operating system is Windows 8.1. I have an Acer Aspire V3-772G which I bought some 18 months ago.

System details:

Processor: Intel® Core i7-4202MQ 2.2GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
Installed Memory (RAM) 16.00 GB DDR3 L Memory
System  type: 64-bit Operating, x64- based processor

A few days ago my firefox browser, which for no apparent reason at all, just seemed to slow to a stupendously very slow loading of pages. I had recently just been working on an issue in which I posted a thread regarding whether there was a possible virus/malware after google chrome terminated with the following message from Hitman Pro Alert:

Attack Intercepted
'Google Chrome 49' has been terminated to prevent execution of malicious code. Please check your computer for malware and software updates

As it happened, it appeared to be because of a conflict somewhere in the Google Chrome, Trusteer Rapport and Hitman Pro Alert combination, and so the only way was to change the settings on Hitman Pro Alert as advised and shown in my thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/611273/possible-virus-or-malaware/

However, there was no malware or virus detected by my own Avast or Malwareware bytes tools, and the tools used as instructed in the thread also showed my system to have none. Also, google chrome works fine, and my computer has not slowed in any way. My fir... Read more

Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 14. 2Gb Memory Core2Duo.

I can;t scroll Sideways but I can going up and down.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Touchpad not scrolling Sideways. But scrolling Up & Down

On both my Acer aspire one netbook (synaptics) and my Lenovo notebook (alps) I need to tab twice on the lower edge of the touchpad (to gain its attention?!?) and then it will scroll. Beyond that I believe you need to take a walk on the Dell support web site. There are number of 14xx models so you need to follow the steps there to find the freshest driver for your particular model. On both of mine the newest drivers have given scrolling as well as "pinching" to re-size pages, photos etc.

I recently updated/upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. The default mouse settings is to scroll using two fingers. I want to go back to using one finger to scroll on the right side of my mouse pad on my laptop. I have tried the settings for the mouse including the advanced settings. I clicked on device settings and then settings underneath that, which led me to a different window. When I clicked on the scrolling portion, it gave me pinch zoom and rotating.
All other forums have told me there should be a one finger scroll and two finger scroll tab under scrolling. I don't know if this is an option for 8.1, or if I am just not finding where I should be looking, but this is an issue for me.
Thank you!

Answer:How do I change my mouse settings from two touch scrolling to one touch scrolling?

Check your laptop manufacturers website for trackpad/touchpad drivers for Windows 10.
My Thinkpad in the Mouse Settings (advanced) has a section for the trackpad and I can set this so perhaps your drivers are not up to date for your device. I know a friend had to manually download those for his Dell to make that work like he wanted.

So, you used InterActual player before the OS reinstall and now you're using PowerDVD, right?  Can you reinstall InterActual and try it again?  Do you have your resolution and other display settings (monitor refresh rate, color, etc.) set the same as before the OS reinstall?  Are you usng the same video driver now as before the OS reinstall? How does the rest of your new software configuration compare to the old?  Same anti-virus?  Same firewall?  Same programs running in the background?  Etc.?Have you run Disk Cleanup since your OS reinstall?  You may have a lot of files in your Temp folder; might help to clean it out.

Hi. Now, i'm not going to bore you with some lame sob story or anything. I'm just going to give you the straight facts. I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 6000d. the problem is that my dad is a jerk. okay, i can't resist, here comes the sob story. I'm eighteen. My dad is a fifty-year-old four-year-old. when he first gave me the computer i was thrilled. this was the first time that i had ever gotten a brand new computer. before that, i always got his old one when he got a new one. (granted this was okay because he always got top of the line, but his idea of the perfect computer was that of a business exec, small, light, and power conscious) When he gave it to me, however, he only needed one sentence to completely crush me. I wasn't going to be an administrator. I was devastated. Of course, he figured that i was going to install all sorts of games on my pc. not true. i have long since come to the conclusion that, if you are going to play video games on a PC, then you need to have one completely dedicated to gaming, which i don't. Now i have a 7 day trial for Keyhole PRO. for those of you who don't know what keyhole is, it is a program that provides access to the entire mapping industry. In other words, its like a spy satellite uplink only not live. Question: Jerky playback?

Hi all,

I get this intermittent problem with MCE when watching recorded programs. The playback will become "jerky" and quite often the sound will be normal.

I've tried reformatting but I still get the problem. I've got the latest graphics cards drivers and codecs.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Jerky playback?

Have you checked your hardware to make sure that all is running well? What about your Reliability and Performance reports? Is it possible another program starts running in the background (for example, something that is network intensive, as for some odd reason the new UI doesn't like necessarily mixing network activity and sound activity)?

This is not a major problem, but it's something that has really been bugging me. My 3D screensavers don't have smooth animation. They are "jerky". I don't think it's a lack of ram, because it happens all the time...even after a fresh boot. Does anyone have any ideas? I've tried everything I could think of...updating my video driver, adjusting display properties, adjusting virtual memory, updating Direct X, etc. I'm running a Dell with the following:

XP home - sp1
P4 - 2.53 ghz
60 gig HD
512 ram
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420
21" Trinitron monitor (1998)

I'm not sure what this means. You always have the same amount of RAM, freshly booted or running for months at a time ;-).

This is from a review of that card. Not exactly "stellar" in it's performance:

"Overall, the Xtasy GeForce4 MX 420 isn't a stellar performer, though it's fast enough for common business applications and for light-duty game playing. In most of our tests, it couldn't reach 60 frames per second, even at 1024 by 768 resolution using 16-bit color, our lowest test resolution and color depth. Frame rates dropped considerably--by about 80 percent, on average--when testing the board's mettle at the more demanding resolution of 1600 by 1280 with 32-bit color, making games virtually unplayable. The lukewarm performance may be partially attributed to its 64MB of SDRAM--all of the other cards we tested at the same time came equipped with faster DDR SDRAM."

Question: Slow & jerky IE6

IE has been really slow & jerky recently: scrolling with the mouse wheel jerks around rather than being smooth, when I pass over a link it takes a second for it to highlight (like it's lagged), it takes another second or two after clicking on a link for it to actually register, highlighting text takes a second until the highlight actually shows up and then it takes another second when I click elsewhere to unhighlight a selection, typing on a page (forms, this message, etc.) hiccups so that I'm still typing but it doesn't register until a second or two later, buttons on a page (like "Save Changes" down on this page) take a second to register, and pages with a lot of images scroll ridiculously slowly. Unless I'm mistaken, this seemed to coincide with my move into a new apartment and cable Internet. Before we had DSL at the house where I was and I never had this problem.

I've tried running Norton, checking for viruses, defragging, getting all the latest windows updates, and nothing seems to make a difference: there's still a terrible lag in the activities I mentioned above. What could it be? I've tried testing it on a loaded webpage while the computer's disconnected (physically) from the Internet and it's still jerky, so I don't think it's the connection itself. As far as I can tell the rest of Windows is working fine... Sifting through directories in My Computer and Explorer seem to scroll fine.

Answer:Slow & jerky IE6

Morgan,

My sympathies.

About a thousand possibilities run through my mind, and you're on the way to most of them way ahead of me:

Get out the screwdrivers, open 'er up, and check to make sure that all cards and cables are securely seated since the move.

If you have Aida32, run it and read it, especially on memory.

But the most interesting of the "usual suspects" that comes to mind is your network settings involved in the switch from DSL to cable modem. There should be significant differences in settings for the two, and since you seem to have your problems ONLY when on the Net (and thus ONLY when you're using your cable actively), I'd look to those settings.

There are a number of sites available that will help you figure the right re-sets for yourself if you're comfy with regediting and such, or they'll offer you free or cheap sware that will give you a one-size-fits-most solution for your type of hookup to the Net. Speedguide is one of the best, I think. Try it. Everything you do to get a better response on the Net is reversable.

Question: Jerky TV reception

My WMC had been displaying normal TV reception until about two days ago. Now the picture and audio is very "jerky" as though it's coming in packets that are hesitating to be decoded. My reception on other TVs connected to the same system is normal.

Actually I've found the program to be a little quirky. It always opens in full screen and for some reason the cursor will not display on the blue screen. All I can do is hunt around until I highlight a button blindly. The remote starts it, but it seems I need to activate it twice to get it to finally tune to a station. Even if I close the screen in not full screen mode, it will always reopen in full screen.

Question: jerky screen

Hi. This is my first post. I hope someone can help. I recently had a major virus on my XP and had to reload windows and every other program. I am a novice at this but tried my best and seem to have arranged icons, pages, etc. pretty well. HOWEVER, I cannot scroll my screen smoothly. It is very jerky and i.e. it takes forever for my mouse to find the place to place an X in a square. I have tried the whole control panel...and googled the issue to no avail. All help gratefully appreciated. Thx BubbeeM

Hello and welcome to TSG.

If you go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager, you might see a yellow mark beside one or more of the entries and that signifies something hasn't yet found the right driver since you reinstalled. It may be graphics or mouse in your case. Right click on it and go to Properties then click on Update Driver. If you're connected to the Internet and have the right settings, the system should wander around your computer and the Net in search of a more appropriate driver. if it doesn't, please post back for some more detail as to how to track them down.

Whenever I play BF2, the video's jerky and stuff until like 5 mins in the game in where essentially every texture or something loads. Is there anyway to make this less jerky?

I'm running C2D e6300 @ 2.8ghz, 1gb ram, and x1900xt 256mb video card.

Its just insanely annoying that this happens to me. I wonder if it happens to others.

Question: Jerky streaming

During web streaming often the CPU is at 100% and can't keep up, causing pauses of the steam. I'm on AT&T DSL and memory usage is no where near full. Shouldn't my CPU be able to handle handle this? Thanks.

Question: Jerky Mouse

I searched but could not find a solution. I was using a Microsoft Optical Mouse(wired). It was jerky so I upgraded to a Microsoft wireless laser. It is also jerky and sticky. Any ideas?

Answer:Jerky Mouse

I have had some experience with jerky mice caused by the surface you are using the mouse on. Try putting something with a texture and variegation under the mouse and see if it makes a difference.

Question: Jerky Monitor

Hi.I'm not sure where to look for the answer to this so I'll just post it.  I have a compaq FP5315 monitor.  When playing games or watching internet TV, a lot of the time the image is rather jerky, rather like someone is pressing a pause button on and off very quickly.Anyone know why this could be?  I'm guessing it could be something to do with the video card, but I don't know enough about it to work it out really.I'd appreciate any help on this subject - thanks, guys.

Answer:Jerky Monitor

I can watch some videos on the same site with no problems but some are real jerky in the sound and image.

See how this one looks to you:

I am using WMP Classic 6.4.7.8 with every codec I can find.

Answer:Jerky Playback On MP

It seems to be ok for me Deke. There's a bit of jumping around in the bits taken in the dark from a car but I think the jerks are down to the camera/camera holder rather than anything to do with streaming/downloading/your computer. I'm using cable broadband just for info. In sumary I think the jerks are in the car, not on your computer

Question: DVD display Jerky.

I have and old XP laptop loaded with Power DVD, presently region-set for American, because my wife has just brought a new, large album of DVDs from America. Each DVD has three short films on it, some of which play perfectly, some of which play well until half-way through and then become jerky, and others which are jerky all the way through. When I play other American DVDs which I have, they all play perfectly. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be wrong? I have heard recently of dual layer DVDs, and I know nothing about it If the DVDs were dual layer, would my lap top not be able to play them. Or is this irrelevant to my problem. Any ideas? Allan

Answer:DVD display Jerky.

Could simply be a matter of bad/damaged/poor media. If you have Nero do a 'Transfer Rate' test with Nero CD-DVD Speed.

You want it to look like this (it can be a little little more jagged).

You can get for for free, but it may not work with an ASPI manager.

http://www.cdspeed2000.com/download.html

Get Nero's ASPI and put it in the same folder.

Question: Jerky DVD Playback

Hello

I have recently done a restore of my system and now when i try to play DVDs the title menu is in black and white and the playback is jerky. I have tried WMP and PowerDVD but both are the same, also video files play fine - its just DVDs. I got the latest codecs and checked to make sure the Primary IDE channel was in DMA - it was. Baffled.

Thanks a lot.
