Preferred Solution: I cannot get into my computer even in safe mode, how can I fix or at least personal files off

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: I cannot get into my computer even in safe mode, how can I fix or at least personal files off

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

My old toshiba notebook has crashed. Yes, I dropped it....more than once to be honest. (RIP). I can only boot into 'safe mode". I get a blue screen when booting in regular mode and get caught in a continual loop.

I just purchased a HP Pavilion 8055. I have a CAT5e Crossover Patch Cable. I want to transfer all my files to my new computer.

In the past, I have used the XP wizard feature to create a network.... I can't do this in "safe mode".

Is there another way to do this?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:x'fer files from safe mode to new computer?

Unfortunatley you may be stuck with bringing up a network. Im no PC expert, but I know you can get an adapter that will allow you to remove your old hard drive and use you USB port on your new laptop to make it a second drive. Then you can copy the files directly. I know some of the guys at work have the kit, its great, you can use it on any hard drive. I'll see if I can find it, its about $ 20.00

Windows XP Home Edition. I need to go to safe mode to run HJT LOG and I did as always, restart computer press F8 and it tookme to the first page and I used the arrow to scroll up and clicked on safe mode. Then the next screen should have gave me a choice to go to Windows XP Home Edition which would have taken me to the safe mode XP desk top. It was not there. Instead of Windows XP Home Edition that I always click on it said Microsoft Windows Whistler Personal, Never seen it before but it is in place of the one that takes me to the safe mode desktop. Whats going on? Where did Windows XP Home Edition go? Should I click enter on the Whistler Personal? Will it take me to the desk top like the other one always did? I am confused. Please help me, Thanks

Answer:No safe mode-whistler personal instead-Help Please

Looks like "Whistler" was the codename for the beta form of Windows XP. I dont know why it changed to that, but you should be able to click on that and get into safe mode as normal since it IS Windows XP.

Computer running slowly, started updating and running virus and spyware programs. Discovers Personal AV on computer which I followed some directions to uninstall. Now I am booting in Safe Mode with Networking as if I boot normally might take 30 min. or get to log-in and then a blank screen.

Followed Read Me and downloaded programs.

Ran CCleaner on all users.

SuperAntiSpyware - nothing, stopped working screen
Malwarebytes (changed to MB.exe) - stopped working screen
ComboFix - stopped working screen
RootRepeal - ran and log
McTools - ran, rebooted, ran GetLogs.bat- log

After running I think RootRepeal, Mozilla Foxfire gets page load error, but able to use Internet Explorer.

Sometimes the programs crashed and gave me error 0x80000003.

Really hope for some help, been working for two weeks on it.

Re: Safe mode, trojans, Personal AV

I don't know what you have done in the past, but the little amount that you have gotten in the MGLogs is not showing any malware at present. However, it is missing a few logs. Did you allow it to run to completion? Did you not get a pop up to run HJT? Did you disable all your AV and AS programs including Teatimer before you ran any of the scans?

Please re-run the MGTools.exe and attach a new MGLogs.zip.

My desktop after a while will not open any programs or files. I would say after 30 min to an hour. I have to reset the computer manually and the whole issue happens again. This doesn't appear to happen in safe mode though. I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains. I run windows 7 32 bit. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Answer:computer unable to open files after a while, ok in safe mode

Hello prerunner97,

You could try a Clean Startup and see if you can determine a startup program you have that is causing the issue.
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

You stated "I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains."
Does that mean you found malware, and removed what was found?
If so, maybe there are still some malware problems?
I'm no Malware expert, but there is a SF System Security forum where you could add a thread explaining your issue, and experts there might be able to help you.

Aloha,
Our problem has been going on for several days now...as I said in the thread title, my 'puter seems to stall in both normal mode and safe mode at the screen "Windows is loading your personal settings".
I've tried six different times this a.m. to boot up, 3 times normal mode, 3 times safe mode. If I can't boot up in Safe Mode I'm lost as to how to start any kind of repair or even system restore.
The system is a Dell dimension 4600 with 512 RAM, dual HD & WXP-SP2. The only users are my wife and myself. I have not assigned a password to the Admisistrator account and we use a common logon screen with no password for ease of use. We do have Guest Account enabled.
Our Firewall and Anti-virus protection is Zone Alarm. Our maintenance routine is to run the following: 1) daily, Spybot S & D, AdAwareSE, A-squared, Window Washer, 2) weekly, Registry Mechanic, 3) monthly, Win Disk defrag and Win Disk cleanup.
Recently, I was in Spybot system tools and opened startup and found a file titled hblogon. I did a google search and found this to be a trojan. My wife followed explicit instructions for its removal and was succesful as far as she knows.
Now in all this info if you've lost track of what my question is...How do I get into the system to boot up without entry via safe mode??? I have not been able to follow your explanations about entering boot.ini in other threads.
I anxiously await someones reply.

I remain patient for your reply,

I have a Gateway computer, Windows XP.
My computer's been having a problem, every time I try to go through Safe Mode, it would always restart.
So therefore, no SAFEMODE for me.
When I try to start up normally, my computer would hang on Loading your personal settings. This one time, however, did go through that and I can't do anything, my mouse over the taskbar would display a hour glass. There are no desktop icons either, but I don't even get that anymore, it hangs on the Loading your personal settings now.
Please help me, and I also do not have any WIndows CD and I do wish to save some money.. Thank you for your time and effort.

I have no idea what happened or why. I was installing VZAccess Manager Software for a Blackberry and my computer froze and restarted. When I logged back on it loaded everything and then once done restarted again. After the second time I didn't have to log back on because there were no passwords in place and everything I had was deleted including system restore points. The internet will not work unless I am in safe mode. I am running on Windows XP. I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. I'm not even worried about getting all my files back, if I could it would be great but if I can't I really just need my computer working normally again. If this is posted in the wrong location please just direct me where to go. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer constanly restarting, all files deleted, won't connect to internet unless in safe mode

Try this scan. You can copy it over from another computer if you need to.Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page. Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current versionRead the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs. The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders). If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window. If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.
Running Windows XP 3 .
Thank you.

Hello, this is a question to the security experts......is it a bad idea to save all your personal info, as well as scanned copies of your bills, receipts, invoices, and any other item that contains personal information and account numbers. I am thinking about saving all this to a computer so I don't have so much hard copies taking up space. I do have 2 hard drives on the computer. I only use one of them, so is it posible to hide the other one so if I were intruded, it would not be seen. Would an external hard drive be a better idea? What about software? I do have Norton with anti virus and internet security. Thanks to those who share thier knowledge.

Answer:Personal Info on a computer. Is it safe????

I would probably save it to en external drive because some malware could get onto your computer and possibly send that back.

First i will describe the problem. My computer suddenly told me that it was infected with spyware, now i recognized it as a fake indicator because it kept trying to force me to download a certain "anti virus software" so i put 2 and 2 together and figure i had a virus. so I immediately used Avast! (my anti virus program) to run a full thorough scan of my system. It came up with multiple threats (it told me my startup/memory was infected and it was unsafe to continue using my computer) it recommended restarting and running scan on boot to delete threats. So i restart and i get a blue screen. Then the computer tries to restart and it just loops back into the blue screen every time. This is what i think the problem is. Something (virus/spyware/malware) is trying to boot up on startup. My computer is crashing because of this. The only way to delete is  to run a boot scan. but i cannot reboot in normal mode, only in safe mode. Avast requires a reboot to delete the files. (and yes ive tried manually delete the infested file it just reapears) (below is everything ive tried)Now heres what ive tried to do: - I started in smart mode. Ran avast there. it does the same, finds a threat asks me to reboot which brings me back to the blue screen. - I ran msconfig, disabled all startup things in the startup tab and then tried a reboot.no success, (still got the blue screen)- so then in safemode i installed malwarebytes (recommended by a friend) and ran that, it found 20 thre... Hello, I'm hoping someone would be able to help me resolve this so that I can avoid having to reinstall Windows. Here's the situation: my laptop suddenly cannot boot up anymore; it usually hangs when the "Please wait..." dialog shows up with the text "Windows is starting up...", but sometimes it goes as far as the login prompt, then hangs after I enter my credentials and press Enter. When it hangs I cannot even move my mouse cursor. I can only think of two things I did out of the ordinary that created this mess:
I installed the driver for the Turtle Beach AudioAdvantage Micro USB stick audio card before my PC started hanging. However, after I installed the driver I was forced to reboot, and my computer rebooted just fine.
I closed my laptop's lid to put it in sleep mode while MyDefrag (formerly JkDefrag) was running. I have done this in the past without any issues, but this time when I exited sleep mode my computer was hanging, so I forced a reboot. This trouble started after I rebooted.

I am able to boot up in Safe Mode, but not Safe Mode with Networking, which leads me to think that maybe some network related drivers got corrupted. Some more info on my setup:
I have Windows XP Pro SP3 installed (v5.1.2600)
I have Avira AntiVir and Comodo Firewall installed
I am not using Hibernation

I am running using Dell Inspiron with windows vista. A couple days ago, I got on the computer and then it froze, at fist the program I was using froze, and then I got a circle next to the arrow, but could still move the arrow, then the arrow stops moving. CTL ALT DEL does not work, so i must do a hard reboot, try to boot in safe mode and all the files come up but then it goes no where and the computer either restarts or I reboot it.

I have run all types of tests and nothing comes up. Today I got the blue screen of death twice, but after reboot, it goes away. I do not have a Boot Disk and have tried all the tests in the F8 command. Currently I am running an expanded memory test, but figured I would get this out there before I go insane.

Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated.

Hi i really need some help. I got a virus notification from mcaffee saying i have trojandownloader:win32/renos.dz and i selected remove and thought it would be fine. But the next day the computer kept restarting and ie and mozilla would not open. They only opened in safe mode with netoworking so i tried to download virus protection but when i tried to install it the computer would restart so i renamed the programs which it worked for so i could install it. I installed malware and it got rid of some files but it has not solved the issue. Also when in safe mode and using the internet the page always redirects to other pages like smartbizsearch and the internet just does not function properly. Hello,
I have this problem with my laptop - sometimes I cannot login - after choosing the user the screen freezes or after logging in it works only for a few minutes in regular mode (I can do things over those minutes like open firefox, but I cannot open folders, sometimes I can open the task manager or even some programs) but then it freezes and I have to shutdown the computer manually by pushing the power button. When I tried pushing crtl+alt+del I got a message "The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when ctrl+alt+delete was pressed. If the operatin system does not respond, press esc or restart the computer by using the power switch". I don't know if this helps, but I try to add as much as I can. Sorry it it's not relevant - my knowledge about computers and IT is minimal.
The computer runs fine in safe mode.
So I tried system restore to a week before when the computer was still fine and it didn't work. So I reinstalled a graphics driver (Intel HD Graphics Driver) as I found on the internet that similar problems got fixed by reinstalled videocard drivers. And it worked, everything started to run smoothly again in the regular mode. As normally I allowed windows updates and after restarting my computer, the problems came back.
I assumed that the problem was the updates so I uninstalled most of them (KB2930275; KB2923961; KB2925418; KB2929755; KB2929733 and KB2918077) but the problem was still there and I was unable to unin... Read more

Lately I have been having problems with my computer.
It turns itself off (it doesn't say "Windows is shutting down..", it just dies.) when I am using it. It turns off after a few hours, sometimes after a few minutes. Then I would have to wait a few minutes until I can turn it on. Because it would not turn on no matter how much you pressed the power button, so the only thing to do was to leave it for a while, and then it world turn on.

But now when you turn on the computer, it turns off seconds after you log in, and then the blue screen of death appears. The next time I tried to turn it on, I got the option to boot in safe mode, and it doesn't turn off. I left it on for a whole day and it didn't turn off.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 5150, running Windows XP Sp2 (I think). I will post more details soon, because the option for running in safe mode does not come up when I turn the computer on. I don't know how to boot up in safe mode because I am a computernoob .
I am typing this on my other computer if you're wondering.
Any help please?
Thanks.

I am working on my sister's PC here. Last week she saw a popup that she says looked like a MS update. She clicked on it and has been having problems ever since. The software "FOUND" lots of malware and redirected her to a site to buy their software

The PC is a Dell XPS 400 running XP Media Edition SP 3. When you try to boot the machine in normal mode sometimes it just hangs once it reaches the desktop and other times I get a blue screen that says IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL STOP 0x0000000A (0xe1023C58, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x805E1CA5). I booted it into safe mode and ran AVG (last updated on 12/23/08) AVG found the following which was moved to virus vault. C:\Documents & Settings\Steve\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\RT27SPSR\freescan[2].htm - Virus ounf Fake Aert Object moved to virus vault.

I can't open anything in normal mode. I booted the machine in safe mode with networking I get a webpage not found message when I try to go to Microsoft's update site. I can get to Microsoft.com. using my PC I downloaded the exe file for Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware copied it onto a thumbdrive then over to her PC. It looked like it installed but when I run it all I get is an hourglass for about 2 minutes then the cusor returns. The program doesn't appear to start. Any advie? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer unresponsive in normal mode Having problem scanning in safe mode

Unfortunately i cannot find any command line search results for MBAM.
I can also not find any portable version of MBAM that isn't warez.

Is there nothing that you can do in normal mode?
Keep trying, and if you can get into normal mode and run a quick scan then please give us logs so we can analyze them.

Hi All,

Been having this problem since yesterday. Whenever I start up windows, it freezes after a couple of minutes. Tried going into safe mode to run virus scan (Avira and Malwarebytes) but both freeze halfway through scanning and I have to do a hard reset. No idea at all what is wrong with it.

Also find that when I try to open Adobe PDF Reader, it shows this message when I am in normal mode. 'The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed.' Right after that, it freezes. Not sure if that's relevant.
Please help me! Thanks a lot in advance!

HP pavillion dv6000windows vistaok. so a few weeks ago my computer wouldnt  start in normal mode, only in safe mode. it is still under warranty so i called and sent in my laptop to get fixed. I get it back and they say they had to replace a "board".  it worked for about 4 days and then started doing the same problem.  It starts and gets to a loading screen with a timer bar and then the screen goes black and then the screen turns off. so i call the warranty place again and they tell me to do a system restore.  this worked for about 2-3 weeks and now its doing the same thing as before.  i tried doing a system restore again and it still doesnt work.  so now im clueless, cityassure sucks and will do anything to keep from replacing my laptop. so now im looking for help elsewhere.  if any one could give me some advice or help that would be great.

Sir I am using windows xp service pack3 for last 4 years, It was working fine. till past few days.. when sudden power failure caused it giving following error "windows cannot find local profile..." I created new profile and copied the files from old profile to this.
Though system was working fine. one of my software MPLAB IDE was not working  it used to give unspecified error and stop. So I used registry cleaner in safe mode and MPLAB IDE was started working properly. But window become slow at the start . It takes almost 5-10 minutes to get original screen. Also When I start explorer it holds up for a while (20-25 sec ).In safe mode everything works well. What may be the problem?

Answer:Computer is very slow in normal mode but fast in safe mode

The registry cleaner probably removed things that some startup programs needed, so now they get stuck and slow. Considering the problem and that you had to create a new user profile, I'd probably just reinstall windows fresh. (But maybe some other people have ideas for fixing it instead)

A few days ago, my laptop started acting strangely, like when I opened skype, the program initially would not allow calls and would freeze then eventually would freeze with any use whatsoever, followed by any others that were open, until the only option was to shut down the computer. I have suspected that skype is the culprit, but even when not using it, the same process would occur, except starting with a different program. Even before the computer froze up, I was unable to use Task Manager or System Restore. For task manager, an error box came up that said something like "security tools unable to initialize," but I can't recall the exact words and couldn't do a screengrab.

So I booted up again in Safe Mode with Networking and everything worked fine, though it isn't terribly convenient to have to use it. I ran GMER and MBAM, and the scans came back clean. ComboFix was able to eliminate some problem files when I used it, though, but when I try to boot up into Normal Mode the problem still persists, though at this point I'm reasonably sure that it isn't a virus. I've also gone through Event Logs, and I've seen some reports of memory slowing down, as well as my System Information for Windows saying that BIOS is reporting the wrong values for the memory. Also ran a scan of the system, which reported that there were corrupted files that it could not fix. I have the CBS log, but I don't have the knowledge or experience that I can make heads or tails of it, though I a... Read more

Sorry if this has been asked before or if this is the wrong forum but ever since I tried to install the Catalyst 16.2 drivers for my AMD HD 6670 (the last set of drivers available for this card as it's now considered 'legacy') my computer has refused to do anything in normal mode and I have been using it in Safe Mode for the past few days.

On the day that it started, I went to sleep and woke up to find that the driver installation had failed and found my computer was running very slowly so I decided to restart it. When I restarted the computer wouldn't do anything at startup and would say 'not responding' if I tried to click anything. Although I sometimes managed to open up Windows Explorer, when I press download the bar you get when searching for files etc. to do with loading reaches the end and just doesn't do anything (staying in the libraries page).

I've followed a few instructions and completely uninstalled the drivers in safe mode, I've run MalwareBytes, I've run ESET's online virus scanner, and I've tried to run Avast's boot mode scan (it didn't work, it just booted into my normal mode on my computer which also, didn't work).

My computer is absolutely fine in Safe Mode and runs faster than I've seen it run in a while.

Thanks for the help.

Answer:Computer Hangs in Normal Mode but not Safe Mode

Catalyst should have created a Windows Restore Point. So, if you can get it to boot into safe mode, you should use system restore to rectify the failed Catalyst install.

Windows should have a workable driver for your 6670 in its driver database. You can also go to website of the maker of the card for the latest driver.

To make your PC work better out of Safe mode.

If you reinstall Catalyst to get your driver. I have found you can disable the AMD External Events in Services.
You can use Blackviper.com to streamline you services.
You can use Autoruns http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/autoruns/ to slim down your start up applications.

I can only open a computer in the safe mode. I have tried changing the mode manually and it wont work. It was reset to factory standards and now won't go back. Please help. I am using someone else's computer to get answers. Thank you.

Answer:How to open the computer in normal mode and not safe mode

Hold the "Windows" key and the "R" key. Type msconfig in the window that opens:

Go to the "boot" tab and uncheck "safe boot":

Click "Apply" and "OK" and restart the PC. It should then boot in normal mode.

Hello,

I seem to be having quite the problem on a computer of mine. After recently installing the directx sdk I am unable to logon through normal or safe mode. When I try to boot up normally, I log in but then the monitors go black but everything else seems to run. Pressing ctrl alt delete works and brings up the screen again but if I try to select task manager for example the screen goes black again. When I boot up through safe mode the computer restarts seconds after loading the windows logon screen. Any ideas on how to get into the computer. I'm pretty sure that uninstalling directx can solve my issues but I just can't get in.

Thanks

Answer:Computer can't boot through safe mode or normal mode

Hello rtsrangel and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you created a System Repair Disc you can use it to boot your computer. Then you can access various System Recovery Options such as system restore. You could then restore your computer to an earlier date/time prior to when you installed the directx sdk.

System Repair Disc - Create

Or perhaps your computer manufacturer created a hidden recovery partition. You can usually access this partition by turning on your computer and immediately clicking the F8 key (top of keyboard.) Keep clicking until you see the Advanced Boot Options screen. From here you should be able to select Repair Your Computer.

System Recovery Options

Please post back if any of this helps or not.

Hi,

Last week my home computer got a virus - PRO ANTI VIRUS 2009. I panicked and shut down my computer. When I got to the office, I searched on how to remove it and was advise to download MALWAREBYTES and run it on safe mode. I did that and run the program on my home computer three times. The last run showed 0 infection. Thinking that I now have a virus free computer, I tried to run it on Normal Mode. But my home computer won't open on Normal Mode!!! I tried pressing F8 and running everything from Safe Mode with Networking, Normal Mode, even system restore, etc.

Oh I also tried to run the system restore disk and just start from scratch, but my computer says it cannot be run on Safe Mode.

Please help as I think it will be expensive to bring to a technician...unless I really have no choice!

XP pro version 2002 and is a 32 bit system.  There is no mfg. name to the computer it is a home built  computer from parts of other computers and items from Tiger Direct, and was built for me 5 yrs. ago by a friend who said he knew very well the ins and outs of building a computer for me....it worked for about 8 months  then issues started  ....the smoke cleared and it has been proved not to be true, I have long ago stopped conversing with and going to him for computer help. he can never cure this boot up problem it has.
I have a few docs. and family images that were yet to be saved / backed up, so a complete reinstall is a possibility.  see **** below

The problem:  The computer will not boot normally, I have had this issue since Nov. 2013 . I have been  reading the web for solutions since Nov. 2013  and trying this and that  and have made no head way.  Tomorrow I will attempt to use  GETxPUD on a DVD and boot with that, and see how far I get.  I am using my son's computer right now, to type this.

**** Trouble began before I could use my external drive and make a back up.  So there is no back up to resort to.   when it does make boot progress it some times will get to the screen where the words XP and the colored four window paned window is,with the bar graph below,  and that stays on the screen for approx.  30 secs give or take and then the screen goes black.  The red HD ... Answer:Help... my computer will not boot into safe mode or any mode...

A system that does not boot at all...or complete booting into the O/S...well, my first suspects would be hardware items.  Guilty until proven innocent via testing or substitution of parts into another known good working system...that's the approach I would take.

If it were me...I'd take it to a local computer shop and pay the $$ to have someone check it out and tell me what might the problems be (never assume there is only one problem).

In today's world...it's hard to not know someone who is capable of doing the same thing for free.  The problem with that is...most users with system problems have no idea how mistaken their estimates of a person's capabilities might be...if the knowledgebase was there, there would be no need to consult someone else:).

I'd be comfortable with the opinion of someone who actually has credentials that attest to her/his ability to properly diagnose and honestly depict the actual problems with a system.

That said...any onscreeen error messages that may have provided clues that something was amiss...before Nov 2013?

I have a computer running Windows XP SP2. This morning my computer slowed to almost frozen. At the time I was running 1 program and Firefox. A window popped up in Firefox telling me that the site the pop-up came from was a "known attack site", so I closed it out and blocked it, and that's when the freezing up started. I tried to run anti-virus and anti-malware software but they wouldn't even load. So I shut down the computer. When I tried to reboot I was getting the screen that tells me the computer restarted suddenly and asks me if I want to boot in safe mode, last known configuration, or normal. No matter what I select, it comes back to that same screen.I did notice that if I select safe mode, it runs down a whole list of different driver locations. I don't know if I got a virus and it deleted some drivers and that's why it won't start. I don't know how to even go about getting it running again. Please help!!!Thanks!!

Answer:computer won't boot in safe mode or any other mode

Be patient and let safemode load fully and then run all your protection apps...It looks like sphaggeti when loading but let it run it's course.I've seen machines where it takes upwards of 8 minutes to load properly. After running your scans in safe mode  Click Here   and follow the instructions...

Hi everybody.

My computer has been infected with a virus for the past few months and I've been using Safe Mode most of the time. It all started when last night, I installed Spyware Doctor on my computer. It told me to restart my computer so I did so. (Note: I installed Spyware Doctor using Safe Mode with networking.)
When it restarted, I went to Safe Mode. All the time, I log in as Owner and not Administrator. When I clicked on Owner, it says "Loading Your Personal Settings..." Then it goes to the usual Safe Mode black screen and this time it said "Logging Off... Saving Your Settings..." and goes back to the log in screen.
The same thing happened when I logged into Administrator.
Next thing I did, I tried going to Normal Mode. But, my desktop picture is the only thing that shows. A couple of minutes later, it goes back to the Welcome screen.
Further information, I tried to use the last known good configuration, but it still wouldn't work.

I really need help. Thanks for your cooperation!

Answer:My computer won't log in Safe Mode or Normal Mode

You can try booting from your XP CD and performing a Repair. Aside from that, you will likely need to reinstall XP.

Computer: almost 7-years-old; 2-year-old hard drive, running XP Home.

Background:
Everything seemed to be fine and then ...
A message came up saying there was a Service Pack 2 installation available. I clicked on the message and let it download while I left the house. I get back and the computer has a message on it saying it needs to reboot. I let it reboot and now it won't start.

The machine goes from the black background window that says Microsoft XP to the blue background window with a drawing of some electronic part and back to the back window over and over again.

When I push F8, I get the expected window, BUT it won't let me start in any of the safe modes and won't start using any of the other commands listed. Sometimes, it runs through a list that appears to have something to do with the hard drive. I only remember part of it. I believe the list includes "disk 0; partition 1; and a bunch of other stuff on each line.

I've tried starting and restarting with the Windows XP in the CD drive. I've tried shutting down the computer and leaving it alone for an hour then starting it again with and without the XP disk in the drive.

Any other ideas? (please note that I am not a computer geek by any stretch of the imagination!)

Answer:Computer won't start in safe mode or any mode

Reboot, tapping the F8 key to go to the advanced boot options.

Choose 'safe mode'

If this boots go to start>controlpanel>add/remove programs (tick the updates box)
remove the sp2 update

If it doesn't boot

Choose 'lastknown good configuration'

press enter

If this does not work you are in for a reinstallation of Windows.

This is copy+pasted from another forum.
I can't get any help from that one so I'm trying here..

It started by having a bunch of command prompts pop up trying to do who knows what. Then a bunch of different windows came up including ones that just had question marks all over and just all kinds of different stuff.
I couldn't close it all. Loads of stuff was running.

I knew I was screwed then but the computer was going too slow to put my USB in and back anything up.

Couldn't open a lot of things like the task manager and whatnot. Surprisingly could run msconfig.

Restarted in safe mode.. okay. looking good.
when it loads up, there's nothing on the desktop but the recycle bin.

inside the recycle bin I can see plenty of files I personally deleted.

Not much appears in the start menu.
In my computer, there's plenty of folders.. but no files appear inside of any of them.

I know the files are still in them because it tells me how much memory is in them.

Absolutely nothing will show up.

I've been crying so much. This is a music studio computer that has absolutely tons of work on it and I'll be devastated if I lose it. I have plenty of it backed up but a lot of recent stuff isn't backed up entirely.

Does anyone know if there's a way I can fix this or at least get my files off of it?

edit:
so, I put a USB drive that had Yahoo's Anti-spy loaded on to it. I know the program works by just dragging the folder so I ran it. Here's a list of what it found:

edit 5: (no edit button? seriously?)
Going into safe mode on the normal account rather than administrator gave me nothing but a blank locked up screen. Great.
I went back into the admin which still opened.. but still couldn't really do much.
Decided to see what would happen without safe mode enabled.
Loaded up. The background appeared but turned black shortly after. A program instantly started up and appeared on the desktop. Task manager worked so I closed a bunch of stuff.

Tried using the search to find some of my files. It won't find anything that's in the documents and settings folder.. Yet the folder itself is 80gb. I don't understand how everything can just be invisible from seeing it anywhere.

computer is pretty much ruined. guess it's going to have to be wiped.

I've had plenty of virus issues throughout the years but this has to be the most stressful one. definitely one of the worst days ever.

I guess it's over.

About 3 days ago I opened an mp3 file that someone had sent me in Windows Media Player. Apparently it was infected, but I didn't get any notice from AVG free. The screen flashed a few times so I suspected something was amiss. I right-clicked on the file where I had saved it and had it scanned by AVG; it said infected. So I told it to remove and I believe a message came up saying removal may cause problems with the system. I had it remove anyway, I guess my mistake.

Anyway, then the symptoms started. When I tried to run any executable I would get the message Windows cannot find <filename> make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. Now I don't even get that, nothing will start.

In Safe Mode most apps will start, but I can't connect to the internet. I think when it first happened I was able to connect via Safe Mode With Networking, but not anymore. I had to leave it for a few days to finish income tax on my laptop. In Safe Mode I get messages like Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall Service and The Security Center Service can't be started.

I downloaded Hijack This and burned it to a CD on the laptop. I can run it on the infected machine, but only in Safe Mode. I can also run the AVG command-line scanner in safe mode.

Any assistance you can provide in starting to find a resolution to this would be much appreciated.

Windows Vista Home Premium X64.

Thanks.

I need to access an .exe file when in safe mode. The instructions say to put it on the deskstop, then reboot into safe mode, but that doesn't work. Apparently only installed programs show. I've put the file into folders that show files in safe mode, but the file doesn't show when I boot into safe mode. I put it on a CD, but while the CD drive is recognized, the file doesn't come up.

Ok... so my mom brings me her computer... almost like I have any clue what I'm doing. NOT. She would like a few files saved before I wipe it clean n start over. If I go into the regular startup... it slows to the point of nothingness, then norton comes on to say that a trojan was found, and can't seem to do anything without it locking up.

So... started it up in safe mode. Thought, silly me, that I could just save her files that way, then erase all the crap, reload everything n give it back to her. But no... CD drives dont work in safe mode... DUH. And since some of these files are pictures, floppy isn't gonna work. What is the easiest way to save some files before the whole dang thing freaks out on me?

Whenever I boot my computer normally, it works fine until I try to run a program, or open a folder, or do anything, and then my computer freezes. It works fine in safe mode. I have run virus scans with Avast and Malwarebytes, and found nothing. A couple days ago, avast started telling me that it was automatically running some program (C:\Program Files\Fujitsu\Utils\FjOddUnl.exe) in sandbox for some reason, but it never came up with any concrete problem, so I'm not really sure how much that matters. This laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook T-series) is a couple of years old, but I just had it repaired (under warranty) a couple weeks ago, and they replaced the HDD and the motherboard, and I really wasn't expecting to have problems like this again so soon.

I have Windows XP sp3 and it fails to complete boot process every time. It reaches the desk top and variably shows desktop icons, sometimes explorer bar and some system tray icons. Moving the pointer over any of the icons or explorer bar produces the hourglass. I can only really boot up in Safe Mode but do not have Administrator password which according to the orignal seller, never set one.

I want to wipe out the XP and start fresh with Windows 7, but have important files to save before I do. I have tried everything. Help!

Answer:How can I copy my files in safe mode?

Welcome to TSF!
I'm afraid the rules won't allow us to provide any help with bypassing lost passwords, as there is no way to determine the actual circumstances.

If there was no password, it shouldn't prompt for one, so sounds like there actually is one.

Is the Administrator account the only one that appears in Safe Mode?

You can boot with the Win 7 DVD and use the command prompt to copy files to an external drive:
Boot with the DVD
Select your language and click Next
Click Repair your Computer
After it scans for Windows installations, select the Top option, then click Next
Click Command Prompt.

You can use a Ubuntu Live CD to copy files to an external drive, to another PC over a network, or bun them to disk.

My computers keeps crashing when I try to boot up in normal Windows mode. It only works in Safe Mode. The problem is, in safe mode, the USB ports do not work, nor does the disc burner. I have pictures and music files I need to back up onto an external hard drive. However, the external hard drive connects through a USB port.

Any advice as to how I can backup my files on to the external hard drive in safe mode?

Thanks.

Answer:Need help backing up files in safe mode

Take the hard drive out of the computer and mount it in an external enclosure. Attach it to a working computer by USB cord and copy out what you need.

Need help please to recover files in safe mode. I am unable to boot to normal XP Pro SP2 OS. I cannot access internet with present computer. I have an onboard CD drive and have access to a USB external HP Drive. I tried copying MY Documents to this drive but it would not work. I inserted disc that came with HP drive, it would not start automatically. Went to Explore and opened folders. All the folders appear to be microsoft video files. Also attempted to load new Mcafee CD and aborted install due to Norton loaded originally. I have the new Dell Install CD and Driver CD, install CD is XP Pro SP2.

Please help need instructions to copy wanted documents, pictures, etc. and do an new install. Or detailed steps to take to get back into regular windows. I should add that i was reinstalling windows when all this started, thought all was lost on HD, Dell tech support had me remove it after running diagnostic. New HD would not install properly either. Put old HD in and ran the same check and HD passed.

this has been occurring ever since my computer was diagnosed with a trojan. i removed it, and ever since then no .EXE files will open. I will click on any .EXE file, the revolving circle signifying loading will show for a second, and then it won't load at all - the program is not present in the task manager.

the weird thing is, there is no difference in safe mode. no .EXE file will run in any variation of safe mode. this prevents me from running ANYTHING apart from the command prompt, viewing folders, and notepad. i cannot load the internet, a virus scanner, NOTHING. it is difficult to fix something when one is literally unable to access anything.

i have attempted the 'repair my computer' option when i press f8, but it says it can't be repaired automatically. i downloaded a registry fix from a different computer, but it reads the message "Could not import exefix.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes".

I cannot load a registry fix, virus scanner, or the internet. i STILL cannot open .EXE files in any variation of safe mode. i do not have the windows 7 disc so i cannot reformat. additionally, the trojan appears to have erased all my system restore points, so i cannot restore to any previous time.

i have literally run out of ideas. i can't even install any fixes! any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Answer:.EXE Files Do Not Open - even in safe mode!

A long time ago, I had something similar happen to me. I found my computer infected with some variant of the WinA Lizard (or something like that) virus that infected every .exe file I ran while it was on my system. It hosed every executable on the HD b/c it actually infected my command.com (in windows 95 - shows you *how* long ago). I got lucky b/c I loved making all of my .ZIP files self extracting executable files, and hosed every single one of the. I was able to still manually open the files using WinZIP, but I learned then not to make self-extracting executable files anymore.

At any rate, though, I found so many residual problems with that system I eventually formatted and reinstalled my OS. In this case, unless you can figure out how to restore your system to work correctly, this may end up being your only option.

Hey guys,

Had success posting here before so I am going to try it again. My friend gave me her laptop and stated her son had been on it and now they believe they have a virus (didn't provide me with additional details). This laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium. I open it up tonight and here is what I noticed:

1) McAfee is continually stating that the computer is at risk.
2) Internet Explorer does not run at all. iexplore.exe is where it belongs but nothing happens when attempting to run.
3) Installer is not installing files. I attempted to install Mozilla Firefox. From the thumb drive UAC did come up but that was it. Copying the file to the desktop and attempting to install did nothing. Checking through error logs, I did see a notice that the installer service is not running correctly and that it could be installed incorrectly (ironic eh?)
4) Safe mode did not work. After attempting to run safe mode (w/ networking), it loaded 3 files finishing with hal.dll. It then proceeded to the repair installer, stating to reboot and if it worked successfully Windows will run normally.

Unfortunately I don't have many details to give you on this one. There aren't any applications or error messages that scream "This is what I am!". If ya guys could lead me in the right direction I would appreciate it!

Hello,I have a ZBook 15 G2 with Win 7 64-bit. It boots OK but will not let me run any EXE files. As such it is rather hard to troubleshoot. Furthermore I cannot get the computer into safe mode. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might deal with this? Many thanks,harry_t

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me please? I have some files on an external hard-drive that I've had problems accessing and have finally managed to figure out how to take ownership of the files by booting up my PC in safe mode (I have Windows XP Home), logging in as an administrator and then changing to administrator in the owner tab. I've now transferred all the files to the desktop on my PC but I now have the problem that I can only access them in safe mode and am unable to transfer them onto a CD or DVD rom and my memory stick won't register either. The files don't appear on my desktop when I boot up my PC the usual way, even though my setting in user accounts is admin. How do I go about transferring these files for use on my laptop (Windows 7 Professional) or on my PC in normal mode? Help!!!!

I'm using Windows 10 on my laptop. Few days ago, I found a process in task manager (I forgot the name) which seemed suspicious. So I searched the internet for it and found out that it is a cryptocurrency mining app so I looked for up how to remove it. I downloaded Malwarebytes first it cleared some stuff. Then I downloaded HitmanPro after which all the problem started, I guess. It scanned my pc for a while without showing any result. After a minute it showed some files that were scanned and all of them were Firefox Browser's cache. But at the exact same time Windows Defender started showing virus detected notification. I panicked and stopped the HitmanPro scan and restarted my pc to remove stuff from Malwarebytes scan and this scan. After this restart, everytime I start my laptop, it shows the error "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute". Tried a lot pf fixes from the internet but to no avail. The final option I think I have is to reset my pc. But here's the problem. My laptop is only starting in safe mode due to "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute" error. I can't select the option of 'Keep my files and reset pc' from settings cause it isn't working in safe mode. I started the System recovery by F11 option while starting the pc and there's a reset option too. Please tell me will I get to keep my files if I reset my pc from there?
Also the salesperson already created a Recovery drive on the hard disk itself. I also have the Recovery CD with me.

Well, I've been scouring Google on our secondary computer all night, and I'm stumped. I'm also not completely tech savvy, so please forgive me.

My computer shut down by itself while I was typing an email. Rebooted and no exe files would open except IE 64 bit (as of six hours later, now that won't open either - opens, flashes, closes and says IE crashed). It has gone through numerous "windows won't start, repairing" screens. It has tried to system restore, but it doesn't fix the problem.

I cannot open in safe mode, and Task Manager is missing. I can open regedit but not msconfig (this is bothersome because I found a workaround for getting the system to reopen in safe mode by changing some configurations, but...) Can't open device manager as one option suggested looking for the possible virus culprit in the tools/drivers section.

I found a site that had an exe repair fix to either merge or import into the registry, but it keeps saying it can't do it because there are "processes running." Those boards suggested trying to the merge/import in safe mode, but as above..can't open in safe mode. Also since I have no task manager available, I can't manually end or suspend any processes.

Windows Defender runs but says everything is a-ok (clearly not).

Because I don't feel comfortable deleting anything from the registry, that's the only thing I haven't tried. Oh, I did find something that said to check the shell and one other place in the registry, bu... Read more

Answer:No exe files will open, nor msconfig or safe mode

Okay, I restarted and finally was able to get into msconfig. I set it up so the computer automatically starts in Safe Mode. Tried importing/merging that exe file again, and nope, says "other processes are running." Went into services through msconfig and shut down all services - still didn't work.

I also find a possible solution to create a new user - won't let me. Sigh....

Trying to clean my soon-to-be father-in-law's laptop, and it is an absolute mess. He had worked with it for months w/o firewall/antivirus-program etc.... It has become unbearable for him (too slow, hardly any interent access, pop-ups, security warnings too many to mention...)

It's a Dell laptop with XP Professional 2002, Service Pack 1.

I tried to clean it in Safe Mode: there I ran CCleaner, Ad-Aware, and Avira, each a couple of times. Avira told me after scanning that some files were locked, and they would be deleted on reboot, but after restarting, it found the same files again.

I located those dll files myself and tried to delete them manually (still in Safe Mode), but they couldn't be deleted or moved...
Some of them are:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\qopml.dll (TR/Dldr.ConHook.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rxmfpocj.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vuowpofk.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\qxmkabqt.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hdowabki.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\DOCUME~1\RONPROS~1\rxmfpocj.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)

I am at a loss. Usually I was always able to manually delete those kind of files in Safe Mode.
Here is my Hijack log (scanned in Safe Mode, after multiple cleanings):

An odd file showed up in my documents called My Sharing Folders, when I clicked on it the screen came up blank indicating to me they were hidden, deleted file but it keeps coming back. It's appeared now in My Computer along with others that are also blank. I removed Windows Media Player, Live Messenger, MSN Messenger in add and remove programs. Now I can't access anything in Sysinternals programs. I decided to use the Symantec Dell pc restore and start over, now I can't access anything in safemode, the keyboard locks out and I can't type in dialog box, I run AVG 8.0, Spybot S and D, Malwarebytes finds nothing. Avg picks up malware.generic, malware.Isearch,malware.antispywareshield and malware.newdot, it removes them but thier back the next day, when I could still access hijack this it found a string in Avg called WormRadar.com, couldn't do anything about it started losing control, my control now is limited, this thing must be sleeping to let me type this much. I have a problem with svchost.exe making my CPU 100, so I followed this guide to fix it. When I'm at the point of finding and opening the "fix_svchost.bat" file, I can't.

To try to resolve this problem, I went to here and downloaded the "Batch File Association Fix", but it didn't work and I noticed no difference.

Please help me solve this problem.

Thanks!

Answer:[SOLVED] I can't see batch files in safe mode?

Fixed it, sorry I'm not writing on the original post; I can't find the edit button. It turns out that my svchost.exe problem was actually not a problem after all. Multiple svchost.exe's running is normal. The reason for my CPU usage being so high is because of a process called MsMpEng.exe, not svchost.exe. Here is a picture.

I posted to the forums at Mcafee as well because originally I thought this was a virus.
Here is a copy of what I put up at Mcafee.

am not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but I couldnt find one more specific.
I will include as much info as I can.
I am not a computer whiz, but I am not toally ignorant either.

2 weeks ago my 1yr old shut off my PC via the surge protector. Then it would not turn back on. I called the Geek Squad and they said sounds like a power supply. I told a computer saavy friend what the Geeks said and he said you can do that yourself. He brought over an extra power supply he had and popped it in for me until the one I ordered from Tiger Direct came. Everything worked fine. Then I took his out and replaced it with the new one and the pc would not boot passed the windows log on screen. It would start up as normal and then get to the log on screen and completely shut down and cannot be restarted without resetting the power supply.

It will however, fully boot in Safe Mode.

I thought maybe a heat issue?? So I pulled the fan and put on the heat gel stuff and still will not boot past Windows log on screen and then completely shuts down.

I figure, I must have a virus. I had Norton on the PC. I figured it must suck so i went out and bought McAfee Total Protection. I installed Mcafee in safe Mode and it ran a virus check and found nothing. I am unable to access the Mcaffee product via the icon or programs list. It just does nothing when I click on it.... Hello,

I've got a peculiar and suspicious problem, but an expert in the Malware Removal forum found no infection on my computer (see the thread here.)

One of the symptoms I'm seeing is that the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) installer will not complete without errors in Windows XP Pro SP3 after a normal boot. After acknowledging the errors during the install routine (which are always the same, a screenshot is attached to this thread), the installer seems to finish. However, the second symptom is that MBAM then will not run due to the same pop-up error message. It's a Visual C++ Runtime Library error that says, "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." Please see the screenshot in this Malware Removal thread.

I know that normally, some malware will disallow running the normal filename for MBAM, so the first thing I tried was renaming the file to something else, including using different file extension such as .com, .bat, .scr, and .pif. None of these renaming attempts worked. This is where I started to observe really strange behavior. After uninstalling my first MBAM install attempt, I found that I could install MBAM when booted to Safe Mode (after changing the registry to allow this and starting the installer service in Safe Mode). After the install I could also run MBAM in safe mode. I then rebooted to normal mode, and MBAM sti... Read more

i have windows home xp edtion on parkard bell.in safe mode it is fine, but when on normal bootup mode it will hang up after 2mins aprox(then restart saying crit error, check hardware etc and being to dump files kernel),on a blue screen.

i tried a different graphics card, but no joy.so i replaced the hdd drive and put a fresh copy of windows xp pro edtion on,but it loads all the files(i have not pressed f6)i just let it run its course on the disc, then it hangs up on the blue screen again with the words(crit error 0x0000007f)check hardware etc and if this is the first time you have seen it try starting windows again.

Thankyou for all your time.

Answer:Solved: xp safe in safe mode fine...mormal mode blue screen

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

Answer:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Ok so I have some personal files on my computer at home, and I dont want any of my other family members going into my folder with all my files, they include conversation with friends, pictures, videos, notes, ETC. I have them all in one folder, and i want to like "hide" the folder, or password protect it, so no one can go into my folder or look at my files...anyone know how to do this?

Answer:How Can I hide personal files on my computer, from others using my computer?

couple of ways to do this... 1st you can access the properties of the folder and set the attribute to "Hidden".

2nd. You can access the security tab on the folder properties and take the everyone group out of the list. Make sure you only have YOUR name in that list.

I can only run my machine (OS: Windows XP Prof. 5.1 SP3) in safe mode. When I try to start Windows XP in normal mode I get the blue screen after a few minutes and a message that says ?Driver IRQL not less or equal? and then a series of Stop codes. This situation started after I had been using the hibernate option for a few days. After I had shut down fully and restarted I got a message stating that Windows had successfully installed the following update: Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows XP (KB976002). At the same time I got a Microsoft Security Centre message telling me that McAfee Virus protection was not operating. Then my computer crashed and I got the blue screen. It may be relevant that a week earlier I had received a pop-up advertising virus protection. If I can get back to my wireless connectivity, then I can post the logs. Please help.

One way or the other, we need to see the logs. Are you saying that our thumb drive is infected or that the av on the thumb drive recognizes the infections on your computer? Do you have a different thumb drive> Can you copy the logs to a cd? We would also need you to run the MGTools and get us the MGLogs.zip.

As of a couple days ago, I have not been able to connect to most websites. If I do, it's after repeatedly attempting, and even then it may only load half way. Google will load most of the time, as will other low information websites. After doing a little experimenting with streaming media, I found that it will allow a small amount of information in every minute or so. While in safe mode with networking, everything internet based works perfectly fine.
I have run many different scanners (tdsskiller, avast, malwarebytes, ccleaner, adwcleaner, etc), which do find things, but nothing that ends up fixing the issue. I am using windows 7. I am not sure if this is malware or maybe even something that is occurring due to user ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

Was tasked to fix another laptop. Oddly enough this issue is similar to the one I fixed a few weeks ago, found here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic475072.html

This is for a Windows XP Media Center edition laptop. I attempted to run Last Known Good Configuration, however that didn't resolve anything. Reading the preparation guide, I attempted to download and run DDS.com, however it would not run on the laptop. When attempting to run that, as well as any of the internet programs on the laptop, I see the hour glass real quickly and then that's it. I didn't notice anything in the error logs regarding the applications attempting to run.

I attempted to run both Safe Mode and Safe Mode w/ command prompt. Safe mode will load, however it only gets me to the black splash screen saying it's in safe mode and the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+delete won't work for me to load explorer.

Please let me know where to start so that we can resolve this issue. I have a feeling where to start but I know as well as any it's very annoying when people want to jump 5 steps ahead.

Thanks!

Hello everyone,
Here a have a quest that can't find the perfect solution for a half year now.

I have one machine at office and one at home, both Windows XP SP3, ADSL connection with static IP.

On the office machine a have an archive of about 250 GB of files.

When i am at home sometimes i need to connect to my office machine, search through those files, maybe preview some, and then download some needed files to my home machine, using a download queue feature is possible.

The task doesn't seem so complicated, yet, i did not find a perfect simple solution so far.

Solutions that i tried already, and don't need suggestion on:
Radmin
UltraVNC
TeamViewer
p300
DC++ and many variations of it.

Note: am not allowed, and don't want to install any kind or sort of server application on office machine.

So considering all these factors, does anyone have even an idea what solution would be fine for me?

Thank you.

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

Answer:System will only start in Safe mode, Clean virus in safe mode

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

How do I surpass this?

I have tried testing UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) however I do not know which tools to use to fix this.

It seems that after Windows updated something then this happened.

Anyways, if there are no options, I would prefer to know how to just reformat my drive and reinstall Vista without starting up (because it does not, as prev. said). I am using a Dell Inspirion 1525 and it comes with a recovery disk (however when I boot the disc it loads but then just shows a mouse pointer and a black screen behind it). So, my question is, how do i reformat and can i Reformat using UBCD? I just want to start all over again. ( i have saved all my files in my seagate backup disk)

Thank you in advance,Potasiu
ps:I tried a system restore from the Command Prompt, but it tells me that I don't have a restore point on the computer.

Can't open "my computer" or "control panel" or any other programs in normal or safe mode. In normal or safe mode, when I click on icons or shortcuts, instead of opening or starting the target, a shortcut is created on the decktop???

All help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Hjt Log; Virus; Can Only Open Files In Safe/command Line Mode

I have read the list of things that should be done to a hijacked computer before you post a HJT log but the only item on that list that the computer is able to do is to run HTJ from the command prompt (only in "safe mode with command prompt", not even from normal "safe mode"). So if there is anything else that should be done from "safe mode with command prompt" before posting another HJT log I will do it.

Any help is appreciated,
A

Hello,
I have an external drive which I'm trying to reuse as a storage only medium. It's a usb drive on which at one point I managed to install a limited version of windows xp,to run on my first netbook (which I no longer use). I have put other stuff on the drive so I don't want to format it, but there are two files I can't get rid of.They are macromedia flash files. (ocx and exe). I tried taking ownership, running cmd adminstrator, going into safe mode with command prompt, and running admin powershell. I can see the attributes - A and R but I can't change them. I've also tried deleting them via filemenutools delete locked files, but that does not help me either. I want them gone, can anyone help me? I've read one other post where the OP had the same problem, but his problem was solved because his antivirus program eventually decided his file was a virus and got rid of it. So it is possible, but I can't find what to do. I guess it's not a big thing but it bothers me that I'm not able to remove these files no matter what I do. Help would be appreciated...

Answer:access denied when I delete files in safe mode admin

I would just reformat it personally. Start from a clean slate.
