In XP Pro can't turn off Windows Firewall or Turn on Automatic Updates

Question: In XP Pro can't turn off Windows Firewall or Turn on Automatic Updates

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I would like to reinstall Norton 360 Internet Security Version 5, I know there are those out there that hate Norton and the overhead that comes with it, but over the years I've gotten used to it and I like it very much. Thank you, PhotoRay

Preferred Solution: In XP Pro can't turn off Windows Firewall or Turn on Automatic Updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Obviously I'm not on my computer, but I need to have firewall and automatic updates turned on for my laptop for my college's system to allow me onto the internet, but they are turned off and the options are greyed out so I can't change them. I know that my user is the system administrator, which can sometimes cause this, and I don't believe the network is affecting it. I did run across something that said "Group Policy" is blocking off the firewall options, but I can't find any information on what that is. Any help would be absolutely great, I'd love to get back to the internet on my laptop again, thanks so much!!

I work as tech support for a 550-person residence hall, and have to deal with all of the people that don't understand the concept of patching their computer or clicking "no" instead of "yes" in IE.

Here it is, a year after Blaster, and I still get dozens of new residents with blaster, sasser, gaobot, korgo, or one of the tons of others. I know the best way would be for them to just run automatic updates for every day as well as regular visits to Windows Update, but it's not easy to tell that to 550 people.

So I'm looking for an automated solution. Something I can stick in a .cmd file that will auto-run off a CD. I need to figure out how to do the following things without having to go through a GUI interface:
1.) Turn on the Windows Firewall on the LAN interface (which I'm not sure is even possible since there may be unique keys for each computer in the registry for the LAN device?)
2.) Turn on Automatic Updates for every day at 12pm (yes, I mean 12pm. They can deal with the intrusion if it means a more secure computer).

Unfortunately, I CANNOT add a line to run the SP2 installer due to some liability crap that is a long story, so I need to do this all pre-SP2. Does anyone have any ideas?

If I can't get the firewall working through registry I'll probably force an install of a freeware firewall, and if I can't get automatic updates I'm going to look into AutoPatcherXP (I believe that is the name), but I&... Read more

Answer:Registry/command line way to turn on pre-SP2 firewall & automatic updates?

Hi, I just reformatted my computer about 3 days ago, and was not able to turn my firewall on, even though I tried to. You need to edit your network connection properties and set it to be 'metered' so it doesn't auto-download them.

My Automatic Updates for Windows XP will not turn on. When I click the red shield next to the clock on the bottom right hand of the screen, Windows Security Center pops up. Under the Automatic Updates tab, it is labeled OFF in red font. I click the button to turn them back on and this messages appears "We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Update settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK." I do exactly this, go back to the Security Center, try to turn them on again, and the same message appears. I've run Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Super Anti-Spyware. All the results almost always come back clean. Occasionally, Spybot will find something and it fixes it, but the problem still persists. I've experienced no problems with my computer in terms of speed or anything like that. Everything still works fine, but I know that it's important to have Automatic Updates turned on. It's also annoying when the little balloon keeps popping up at the bottom of the screen, telling me that my Automatic Updates is off. I've tried to fix this problem before on another forum, but nothing worked. I did the whole Start, Run, services.msc process and that didn't do anything. I also tried the Dial-a-Fix program? That also didn't help. Does anyone have anything to offer that could solve this ... Read more

Hello,

We had a malware attack, and successfully (we think) followed the advice here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-xp-home-security-2012

All seems well, except now we can't get Windows Automatic Updates turned on. On boot, the computer pops up to give us a warning that it's not turned on, and suggests doing it manually. However, when we do it manually via the automatic updates checkbox, it says we've changed it (and retains the chosen button as if we'd changed it), but Automatic Updates is still off.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hello all,
First time to post on this forum so bear with me please.  My XP Pro desktop will not let me turn on Automatic Updates for some reason.  It is all "greyed out" and will not allow me to set it for Automatic Updates.  Any ideas?

Answer:Windows Automatic Updates - Cannot Turn ON

Well...it might have to do with the fact that XP is no longer supported for critical updates.

It makes sense to me that autoupdates might now be nonexistent for XP, while one can probably still go to the Windows/Microsoft Update sites and manually download/install any updates from the past which may need reinstallation.

My DVD drive is not working, so I tried to run the Microsoft Fix It application to see what was wrong. It tells me that I need to download the XP Service Pack 3 and .NET framework 2.0 or later version. I figured that would easy enough, and tried to do just that. It informs me that I need to turn my Windows Automatic Updates on. Hey, no problem, right?

What should be as simple as a few mouse clicks has turned into a frustrating afternoon! First I tried the link in my lower right tray, and it informs me that I need to go to the Control Panel to turn them on. So I do. Still nothing. When I go into the Control Panel, it shows me that Automatic Updates are already on, and yet my icon in my tray says it's not. I thought maybe the icon hadn't caught up with the times yet and tried again to download SP3-same message!

So I then tried Control Panel-Other Control Panel Options, where I supposedly should see the Automatic Updates option, but I don't! The only option it gives me is 'Program Updates' for InstallShield. After going through these steps numerous times, I finally admit defeat and am turning to the experts. Please help me before I pull all my hair out! Thank you!

Answer:Cannot turn on Windows Automatic updates!

You could maybe go too the following link
Microsoft Windows Update
or maybe you need too check the update service is active to do so
go to Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to automatic updates and double click on it, ensure the start-up type is automatic and the service is started. Then view the automatic update tab in system properties again.

Answer:Do I need to turn off Windows Automatic Updates?

Windows Updates are vital from many perspectives...

Next week you will be offered new updates.
It's also known as Patch Tuesday or Wednesday, depending where in the world you are...
On rare occasions (if a security vulnerability warrants it), Microsoft might release a patch out-of-band (meaning not on patch Tuesday/ Wednesday)... doesn't often happen though.

IMHO tis a good idea to have your computer set to inform you, but not download or install any updates offered.
Would also recommend you do a few at a time rather than oodles at once.

Tis a good idea to create a System Restore point before downloading....just in case!

Hello.
To turn off automatic updates in Windows 10, we basically need to prevent the Windows Update service from running on startup. This can be done by going to Start Menu>type 'Services'>look for a service called 'Windows Update' and double click on it>if it's already running stop it and put its startup type to 'disabled'.
Cheers.

I had updates set to download and then ask me which ones I wanted to install. But it only worked like that for a short time, then it started installing automatically.

After Patch Tuesday this week, everything started crashing. I did a system restore to the point before the updates, and most things are now working okay. But when I try to shut down the PC, the automatic updates start installing again, and there's no way to turn them off. Selecting manual updates has no effect, they still come automatically. If I uncheck all the updates in the list of 'important updates available' they only stay unchecked until I close the updates window - when I reopen it, they're all checked again.

I did a full system virus scan, but it found nothing infected.

I would be very grateful for any insights into this. Has anyone else had trouble with this week's updates? I'm using Windows 7 64-bit.

I have a laptop that uses Windows 10 and I hate it. Everything is a learning curve, difficult to do, and now I'm ready to throw this thing out the window and wave "Bye-bye!" because I can't find a way to turn off automatic updates. I just wasted over two hours between waiting for an update that abruptly took control of the computer for more than an hour, with no option whatsoever to temporarily turn it off (a la Windows Vista, which I also despise), and for the other hour I've been searching frantically ever since for a solution.
One solution said to go into Settings (ok, fine, it shows PC Settings, not just Settings)/Update & Security/Windows Update. Then it said to go into "Advanced Options." From Advanced Options, I am supposed to show some kind of drop/pull down setting immediately under "Choose how updates are installed" that says, "Notify to schedule restart"...well, it's not there. I have "Choose how updates are installed, and then immediately underneath, where the drop/pull down setting is supposed to be, it says, "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows." I can click and click on "Choose how updates are installed," but that isn't a clickable option. It does nothing. It's just a label.
I'm just trying to turn off the automatic updates. That's it. I've looked all over in settings and can't find anything. Is my only option really regedit? I don't want to do that. Isn't ther... Read more

Answer:No option to turn off automatic updates in Windows 10

Open Run > type services.msc > OK > scroll down to Windows Update > right click at it > click Properties > under Startup type, click the pointer and select Disable > OK
Note that this stops patches and fixes that make you system more secure against attack. Use at your own risk.
You can also selectively remove updates if they cause an issue for you: Don't Like the Last Update? Uninstall it. [Easy Fix] which might be safer in the long run.

Hi there,
I'm hoping someone can help with this. I am trying to sort out some problems for a friend (blind leading the blind as I have very limited computing knowledge).
Pop-ups appear whenever a new tab or browser window is opened (often opening a new window themselves) and often whenever you navigate away from a page.
Also, automatic updates will not turn on at all. I have tried doing this in the normal way, when the bubble pops up at start up and also through the control panel into admin tools and then services but it resets itself to off or disabled every time.
I downloaded Spybot and as per advice on another forum I ran this in safe mode with system restore turned off.
On normal reboot this appeared to have solved the pop-up problem but I still could not turn on automatic updates - however after a few minutes pop-ups started appearing again.
I have now completed a HJT log which I will post here - can anyone help me sort this out for them.
The computer now has McAfee installed but did not until a couple of days ago - it is up to date but I fear it's a case of locking the stable door after the horse had already bolted!
Here is the log - any help would be very very much appreciated!

Due to a conflict with an updated version of Microsoft Silverlight, (it clashes with an in-house web-based program we use here at work. I have to manage 20 Windows 7 computers, I had to uninstall Silverlight version 5.1.20125.1 and reinstall an older version 4.1.10329.0 that allows our programs to run properly.
The newer version of Silverlight was part of last Tuesday's Windows update package. After getting back to the version we want, I thought we'd be fine, but the next morning, Windows update had reinstalled the Silverlight 5 version again. I redid the uninstall of the version 5, went back to 4, and then went into Windows Update and told it to never check for updates. I thought that would be enough, but the next morning, checking a couple of the computers, Windows updating had turned itself back on again.
Next I read that all I needed to do was stop and disable the Windows Update service, but after shutting down and restarting Windows Updating is back on again! the Service is running and enabled!

what the heck do I need to do to stop Windows Updates from running until we can fix our in-house program to work properly with Silverlight 5?

Also I am running Microsoft security essentials which also won't update. Although Malwarebytes updates automatically. I downloaded Superantispyware and ran it 3 times in safe mode .Found and deleted malware. Rebooted and so far no BSOD ( fingers crossed). Still get the alerts for the updates.

Can't turn on windows automatic updates,IE6 pops up,and computer is running slow!

I have MicroTrend antivirus and since yesterday all the above problems have been occuring. yesterday I was surfing the web using firefox when i noticed it was starting to become really slow loading. Then there were 3 consecutive unauthorized change prevention popups from microtrend antivirus, 2 of which I denied and i didn't get asked to deny the 3rd warning.

Since then my Internet Explorer 6 pops up once in a while with random stuff. Such as something starting with ylwbook. something(i forgot rest of url), 70.38.98.32, and 85.12.43.70. These IE pop up and I am not able to view the popup. Also they sometimes just pop up with the end program for IE.
my computer is definitely a lot slower now...
This annoying but I am worried that it may be a virus.

The MAIN PROBLEM is that windows security alert icon keeps showing up now in the lower right corner. It says that windows automatic updates are turned off.
The problem is that it won't turn on automatic updates, i event tried going to Control Panel then System.

I googled these problems and I thought maybe i had a Vundo virus.
so i got VundoFix and HijackThis and ran both on my computer, but VundoFix did not scan anything bad and i am not sure what my HijackThis log tells me.

This is a problem that I've found a lot on the Internet but have yet to find a solution that works in my case.
I am using Windows 8.1
I cannot download apps from the Store and an error message says that this is due to Windows Firewall not being turned on.
I cannot turn Windows Firewall on because we error message says that it cannot change some of my settings. (Side note: I am using Avast but even when this is turned on I get the same message from the Store)
I cannot start it manually as I get an error message there too (I'll update with exact wording later as I'm currently on my phone)
I am also completely unable to restore to factory settings or create any recovery media.
I have done comprehensive virus scans and have absolutely no issues in that sense.
I have reset Internet Explorer (apparently to reset my connection) to no avail.
I've tried every solution I've found online and I'm just stumped. Help would be deeply appreciated.

I started my computer up and it said that my antivirus wasn't updated, and my automatic updates was turned off. I tried to turn them off from windows security, and i get an error message saying it can't be done, try to do it from control panel. When i go into control panel it shows that the automatic updates is on but the red X with the shield is still in the corner. I am also having trouble opening multiple tabs on my mozilla firefox, i don't know if that is linked to it.

When I go to windows update I get this message. The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windosw services is not running. Automatic Updates, Background ntelligent Transfer Service, Event Log. It is the windows update. It says to click start, then run. Type services.msc and then click ok. In the list of services, double click on automatic updates and then click on properties. In te Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply. Mine said disabled so did as it said. Verify that the servce status is started, if the service status is stopped click on the start button. Mine says Stopping and the Start button is grayed out. All the buttons are grayed out. The other two are fine. So how do I get this fixed? When I click on automatic updates again the startup type has changed bsck to disabled. Please advise.

Answer:Can't turn on automatic updates

Would you check your event viewer (my computer right click => manage => event viewer => system logs) to see if there is an error log for the service not starting. It may explain it and tell how to fix.
Do you know if you updated to the new V7 windows update (you are prompted to do this before installing SP3) in fact, do you have SP3?

Visit windows update manually and see if they have a "let microsoft turn on automatic updates" link or a V7 download or microsoftupdates download.

For the change in the DEFINITION NUMBER, it's because I have updated the last definitions of Emsisoft AFTER i used it to do a full scan. I know I should have asked for updates before I done the full scan. (Sorry).

After the new updates download, they gave me my new definition number.

I have done another scan with Malwarebytes and this is what they found:

Hello all,

Since I removed a windows restore virus with the help of Bleeping computer I have been unable to turn on my Windows Automatic Updates. I have tried doing so in the windows security centre and control panel to no avail and when I try to download updates manually from here-http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us, the process alaways fails.

When I attempted the following resolution it failed because it cannot find the file specified (error 2) when I try to start the Background Intelligent Service.

1. Set Background Intelligent Transfer Service to Automatic and verify the Status is Started.
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service, and right-click to select it.
Select Properties.
In the Startup Type list, select Automatic.
Verify the service Status is Started.
Click OK.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi, i hope you can help. I cannot turn on automatic updates in XP Media centre edition. I have read many threads about the problem and i believe i have a virus infection preventing me from turning it on. I have followed the steps detailing how to go into services and locate Automatic updates click on properties etc, however automatic updates is not one of the services listed, even in extended view. The download updates (recommended radio button is checked) and appears to be OK, however i get the windows security alert in the task bar and when i click to turn on i get a message saying it cant. I also get a message when trying to update direct from web site than there is an error and it cant update.

PS i am also getting unusuall redirects, not all the time but occassionally.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

I think i have an infection. i will list the symptoms and then post a HijackThis log. I am running Windows XP (Home) on a Dell Dimension 4600 with 80 gb HD and 2 gb RAM. I have AdAware and have scanned before posting this. Also have McAfee installed.
Thanks in advance.

1. When I boot up (to any of the user accounts) I receive an icon (red shield with an 'X' through it) in the tray (bottom right) saying my computer might not be safe because Automatic Updates has been disabled. Mousing over the icon gives the tip 'Windows Security Alerts'.

2. When I right click on that icon and choose Open Security Center it opens the Windows Security Center, showing Automatic Updates are indeed turned off. When I click 'Turn On Auto Updates' it tells me it can't and to try it from Control Panel. I enable it from there and reboot and receive the same problem.

3. It seems that iexplore.exe and explorer.exe run as soon as I boot up, and for quite some time eat up all system resources. Not sure if this is related. Thing is, this happens every few minutes or so for about 30 seconds - explorer.exe uses 100% of the CPU.

4. Using msconfig, I looked at what was in the Startup tab. There were two strange ones - antivirus.exe and foumrish. Looking on sysinfo.org, I found the first was some kind of trojan and there was no information on the second. I think AdAware removed it. Either way, I unchecked both and rebooted. They still exist as choices, but remain unchecke... Read more

My security alert (red shield) is telling me that my automatic updates is turned off, and when I try to turn it on it says: "We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK." I have done this, and it still does not turn it on. I have run SpyBot-Search & Destroy and Symantec Anti-Virus, and it has found Virtumonde and Vundo viruses. It seems that they get deleted; however, my computer runs slow and I still get a lot of pop-ups when I search the web. I am a novice to these situations so I am pretty clueless on what to do to fix the problem ... please help if you can. Thank you.

Hi all. I'm a new member here and repeated Google searches have led me to this forum so I decided to join and start a topic about my problem. About two weeks ago I turned on my computer and a bubble in the bottom right corner popped up letting me know that my firewall was turned off. I clicked on the bubble which took me to the Windows Security Center and I tried to turn on the firewall manually but received the following error:[img]<a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=5anl9v" target="_blank"><img src="http://i49.tinypic.com/5anl9v.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>[/img]I turned my computer off and about two days later the bubble popped back up telling me that both my firewall AND automatic updates were off. Again I tried to fix the issues manually but it didn't work. I ran my anti-virus (AVG 2012), but it came back with no infections. I next did a Google Search for my problem and tried several of the answers that I saw including downloading and running Malwaybytes AntiMalware in Safe Mode with Networking and doing a System Restore. I ran System Restore about 5 or 6 times and each time received this message: "Error: "SYSTEM RESTORE Restoration Incomplete Your Computer cannot be restored". (Sorry I didn't screenshot)Now my computer is running slower than usual and freezing and I'm pretty much convinced that I have a virus that I wasn't able to l... Read more

I have a lot of problems at once with my PC. I am a software developer so I did try to juggle around with my inadequate skills .
I have got the following problems. Someone gave me a disk with thinstall enabled Office software on it which perhaps triggered this all. The main problems are

Many pop-ups/ Ads
Buffer Overrun Messages
Explorer not Loading
Many Icons are corrupt now, (They are either showing default EXE icon or Default NOICON)
I can not trun on the automatic updates. Even if I go to the Windows website for live updates, it gives me errors.
I have tried a number of things like full scans using Mcafee, Ad-ware. Spy Sweeper has done a bit of trick for me but not all the problems have gone.

Kindly Suggest me what I need to do next. I have got XP Media Centre 2002 with service Pack 3(But I am sure it is not SP3!!).

Here is the the HijackThis Log File.

When I go to turn on Automatic Updates I get the error message 1058: The service cannot be started either because it is not enabled or has no enable devices associated with it. I followed all of microsoft's steps and it still doesn't work. I am also getting alot of popups to random virus scanners and advertising stuff. I followed the 5 steps before posting a log and here are my logs.

Main.txt log (DSS)
Also attached are like it says the extra.txt (DSS) log and the ActiveScan.txt log (Pandascan).

Thanks!

Note: I had to attach the main.txt Dss log because I had too many images.

On Saturday last week, I used Yidio.com to watch the office. I've never had any problems with the site before, so I didn't think it could be harmful to my computer. The usual site that streams the episodes wasn't available for this one, so I went to supernovatube.com which I've never used before. Before I could get to the video, there was a page saying that video hosting was expensive, so I needed to click a button to confirm I was a human. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now I realize that probably wasn't a good idea.

Near the end of the episode, I got a pop up from my antivirus program saying that it found and quarantined a virus. It was Trojan.Win32.Monder.----, I don't remember the ending of it. Then I got a couple more messages like that and decided to leave the site. When I closed the window, the following message was displayed:

"Warning!!! Your computer contains various signs of viruses and malware programs presence.

Your system requires immediate anti viruses check! Antivirus 360 will perform a quick and free scanning of your PC for viruses and malicious programs."

I clicked cancel, and it opened a window which looked like "My Computer" and it showed it was running a virus scan and it had found hundreds of viruses. I closed the window because I knew it was a pop up, and the following message was displayed:

"Harmful and malicious software detected. These programs may damage your computer and steal your p... Read more

How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firewall On or Off

Answer:How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firew

This may have been disabled on your computer, particularly if you are in a Domain (e.g.: at work, in a library, etc).

However assuming that you have Administrator rights to your computer you should be able to turn it on and off by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

If you cannot turn the Firewall off through the above approach try the following Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Looks for the 'Windows Firewall' Service, double click it, then click on 'Stop'.

From within the Service properties you can also stop the Firewall from starting with Windows, etc.

I am having lots of problems with my laptop thanks to my kids clickity clicking links when I wasn't around. My firewall has shut itself off and I am unable to turn it back on, I am unable to update any anti-virus or anti-malware programs, computer is super slow and is just acting wonky in general.  Yesterday when I tried to open up internet explorer, it shut the window down immediately and gave me the "Windows has encountered an error" message. The only way I was able to get this thing going was to do a system restore and now I am having tons of problems. Have a look at my log below.  Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to turn this behavior off so the desktop screen never goes away?

Answer:Windows 8.1, turn off automatic picture screensaver

Right click on the Desktop, select Personalize.
Click on Screen Saver at lower right.
Set to None.

Most of the crashes happens because of a bad drivers. Unfortunately most of the time these bad drivers are coming from Windows Update. Because it won't pick the best driver. So when we troubleshoot BSOD it's best to disable automatic driver installation so we can make sure we are downloading the best driver from manufacturer's website.

Here is how we will disable Automatic Driver Installation

Device Installation Settings

1, Start Menu search box : type change device installation settings

Once you click on that to start it up you will get the following dialog that gives you two choices:

2, The top option: Yes, do this automatically is the recommended setting.
When the second option is selected the options expand:

3, When it is expanded you see a default choice and this is basically the same as the automatic option above. The other two choices are the big difference here.
Install driver software from Windows Update if it is not found on my computer. This will search your computer first instead of Windows Update. If it is not found locally then it will go to Windows Update and look there for a driver.
Never install driver software from Windows Update. The system will always ask you to provide the device driver.
We want to enable "Never install driver software from Windows Update"
Then click on Save Changes
4, Now your Windows won't automatically download drivers.

Hope this helps,
Captain

I cannot enable either the Windows Firewall or the Automatic Updates. Each time I try, I get this error message, "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy". I followed the instructions in the tutorial about how to configure the firewall and there is no checkbox by "Protect my computer from...." when I click on the Advanced tab. I'm totally locked out. All I get is the "Group Policy" error message. I have Malwarebytes and Spybot installed and update and run each of them weekly. I also have McAfee Security Center installed through Comcast (my service provider). I think that I have tracked it down to somewhere in the registry but that's as far as I've been able to get. The IT at work says running ComboFix should help clear things up. Is he right? If so, how do I download ComboFix? Do I need to uninstall McAfee if I do?
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

The IT at work says running ComboFix should help clear things up. Is he right?Hi spedlady52 -In my opinion "Not unless supervised by an expert" - Combofix is not like Malwarebytes or SUPERAntiSpyware , where you just install , update and off you go -It is a special Tool that is used only in special cases once an expert knows your history and exact problem -It also needs to be fully uninstalled after use -Thank You -

Greetings....I hope you can help me with my problem. I have had McAfee Security Center installed on my computer since the day I bought it (approx. 2 years), & recently I've been getting alerts telling me that my computer is at risk because the firewall is not turned on, & when I go into settings, & click turn on, it comes on for a brief second, and then turns back off immediately. Got on to McAfee's help center, ran several programs they suggested, i.e. McAfee virtual technician, Stinger, & also programs suggested within their forum, i.e. Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Tuneup Utilities, none of which helped resolve my issue. I even uninstalled/reinstalled McAfee, & the only thing it did was stop giving me the notices, but if I go into settings for the firewall, it still says its off, & when I click turn on, it does for a brief sec, then goes right back off again. And when I checked the Windows firewall, it gives me an error when I try to change the settings (Error code 0x80070424). In searching through forums, it's sounding like I've got some sort of Virus/Malware that is causing this, but I've pretty much exhausted all my resources in trying to fix this......I hope you can help. Tweaking.com's Windows Repairs (All in One) items #26 & 27 [and if there is a click for the firewall] might be all you need. Do you have any sort of Internet Suite installed? If such contain a firewall, and same is on by default, Windows Firewall will remain turned off. There is on exception I know of: Comodo Internet Security will run its firewall right alongside Windows Firewall -- so I made sure one of the two is turned off.

Just installed SP2 from the MS CD onto a laptop with XP home and the Firewall will not turn on. After clicking the "Security Centre" icon the message says "Windows security centre could not turn on windows firewall, to try turning on the firewall yourself go to windows firewall in control panel, in the windows firewall general tab select on (recomended) and click ok. However when I do this I get a further massage saying "Due to an unidentified problem windows cannot display windows firewall setting".

As usual very unhelpfull windows messages but what could be wrong and how can I fix it?

I have a ZBOX, which came with Windows 7 installed. This was updated to Windows 10 a few weeks before the free offer ran out & was running fine.

Recently, I started getting the error message that Windows Firewall wasn't running & to tap to start it. When I do so, I get told that "Security and Maintenance Can't Turn on Windows Firewall." When I click the link to turn it on manually, I get a window that tells me the "firewall is not using the recommended settings." When I click the "Use Recommended Settings" button, nothing happens. If I click the "View recommended Settings" link, nothing happens. If I go to the Turn Windows Firewall on, or off link, it takes me back to the "firewall is not using the recommended settings" thing.

I have Googled & tried everything I can find online, including the following... Fix: Unable to Activate Firewall in Windows 10. I did discover that this problem has been a common one since Windows 8, but none of the fixes I've found work.
I've even run ReImage, which I suspect you'll disapprove of, since it's a registry tweaker & they are so often more trouble than they're worth, but that made no difference.

Today, to add to my joy, I discovered that serveral built in Windows apps, such as the calculator, no long run. I discovered how to re-install them through PowerShell, but guess what? Several couldn't be reinstalled because Windows Firewall wasn't running. ReImage did, however re... Read more

Hi B-lockdown080,

Your opening post is rather vague.

Could you provide some more information about the error message you are getting when you are trying to re-enable the firewall?
Could you also provide us with which operating system you are using?

I am assuming it is the default Windows Firewall you are trying to re-enable.

The more information you provide, the better.

Thank you

I am working on a friends computer that was infected with Fake Antivirus, and probably a few others before I got involved. I was able to succussfully remove the Fake AV using MBAM and additional scans with MBAM indicate no infections. However, windows security center says the firewall is disabled and when I try to enable there is a notice that "Some settings are controlled by Group Policy" and the On selection is greyed out. The OS is Windows XP Home edition SP3. I am aware that GP is not available on XP home, and to the best of my knowledge, this machine has never been on a domain although the AV software they have loaded is Norton Corporate Edition. I am currently running using msconfig to disable all Startup items only Microsoft services enabled. Starting in normal mode the computer still runs slowly. Any thoughts?

thanks in advance!

I have followed the standard procedure for turning off the windows firewall. But I can not turn off the security wall. I went to control panel-> security center. Then clicked on windows firewall. Chose off option and then OK. But the windows firewall is still on in the security center panel.

I am having problems loading both Internet Explorer and Firefox; the altter one does load after a couple of attempts. IE even when it loads does not work properly. For example, in hotmail, some time I can not open inbox or if I could, could not open a particular mail. I am using Norton firewall/antivirus. I thought Windows firewall may be responsible for my problem.

I would appreciate any help

Answer:Can not turn off Windows Firewall

I doubt if that's the cause of all your problems, but=
Enable or disable XP Internet Connection Firewall = http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/icf.mspx

To turn XP firewall on/off = start/control panel/double-click on network connections/right click on the icon for the connection you are using/properties/advanced/ check or uncheck box next to "internet connection firewall"

After you turn it off, you might want to =

Disable SP2 security alert = start/settings/control panel/security center/in the resources click - "change the way security center alerts me"/uncheck white small boxes and click ok

Hi all!
Since last couple of days I am facing trouble in enabling Windows Firewall on my machine which uses Windows 7 Ultimate x64 as the Operating System. It all started with an error that I received while using Internet Download Manager v6.11 regarding Base Filtering Engine. I googled the error and found a fix for the said problem and fixed it in no time. Just out of curiosity I read the post further and found that there could be some other services that might not be working properly, so I checked for the same and was shocked to realize that the windows firewall was not working. Its start up type was ?automatic? however the status showed ?stopped?. When I tried to start the service I got following error:
Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service- specific error code 5.
Now I read a couple of posts and they said various things about being attacked by some malware or Trojan etc. I use Microsoft Security Essential as anti-virus and scanned the entire computer. It found more than a dozen of Trojans and some hack related viruses which it very smartly handled. I also used Malwarebyte and found at least 100 of infections. I don?t know if I did good or not, I removed them all. Then gain I tried to start the Windows Firewall service after I restarted my system, yet again it gave me the same error that it could not start. Wh... Read more

Hello Vinny and welcome to Seven Forums.

Couple of things you can try. If you have a restore point that goes back to before the initial problems, try restoring your computer to that date/time.

System Restore

You could also see if your machine has any damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

MSE is good, but no anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a product we'd all be using it. Here are a few more free scanning tools recommended on this Forum.

Malwarebytes

Hitman Pro

SuperAntispyware

Comodo Cleaning Essentials

Windows Defender Offline

Dear forum,

I turned off my firewall in the Security Center of Windows XP SP2, believing the firewall in my router (for wireless internet connection) would be sufficient. I want to turn it back on, as I now have regular Trojan horse attacks and the PC sometimes suddenly becomes very, very slow (it executes everything, it just takes minutes). When I go to the Security Center and choose firewall below, the screen appears where I can turn it on, but the option button next to it is inactive. For some reason it's impossible to turn it on.
What can be the cause of this?

Thanks in advance,
Jilt

64 bit version. I'm trying to work through an iTunes problem - it tells me that the iTunes application could not be opened - and in an effort to diagnose the problem I wanted to turn off the firewall on my antivirus.

I turned off AVG, but when I go to Control Panel and click on Windows Firewall it reads:

Home or work (private) networks Not Connected
Windows Firewall state On

Public networks Connected
Windows Firewall state On

There is an option on the left 'Turn Windows Firewall on or off' that does turn blue and becomes underscored when I hover the mouse over it. But left or right clicking produce no result.

In an attempt to fix this I ran the Command Prompt as an Administrator and typed "SFC /SCANNOW" a scan ran this took all of two minutes and it was absolutely no help saying that "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Next I ran "Services" by pressing 'Win' + 'R' and typing "services.msc", scrolled down to Windows Firewall (Which was not running). I double clicked the service bringing its options. Under the 'General' tab I clicked on start service and I got this error returned "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall service on Local [COMPUTER_NAME]. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."
Note: where I have written [COMPUTER_NAME] this was just to hide my actual computer name.

make sure the Windows Firewall service is set to Automatic for Startup type and is enabled/started.

I have a HP 2010i running Windows 7. I have been having a problem opening my mail in AOL. After I sign in and click on my mail it brings me to the mail screen but the page never loads all the way and freezes. I can eventually open my mail after going back and forth a few times. I ran a virus scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. It detected the Rogue WIN32/FakeVimes virus and deleted it. However, I still can not open my AOL mail correctly. I do not have the AOL software as a program on my computer, I just go to AOL.com. I can get to my mail correctly on a home laptop and other computers just fine. Also, I can not get my Windows Firewall to turn on. After doing the diagnostic tests provided by Windows, it states "Windows Security Center can't be started". Your help would be greatly appreciated.
