Preferred Solution: Help. My Pc Always Restart

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just rebuilt my game pc and ever since I installed windows 7 64bit anytime I hit restart it says windows is shutting down, the screen goes black and stays black. I have to press the power button to force a shut down and then restart it. BUT, if I shut down windows with the shut down button the pc powers off normally and hitting the power button makes it boot just fine. So everything works perfect, except when I try to use the restart button on windows it hangs after it says shutting down windows.

I have every update available from windows update installed already, disc has service pack 1 on it already.

I am running windows 7 64 bit pro installed. (I did a clean install, no upgrades)

My hardware in it is...... (everything has the current drivers installed)

Gigabyte z170xp-sli motherboard that has the current bios installed.

Intel core i7 6700k 4.0ghz cpu.

Crucial mx300 SSD hard drive.

Evga gtx 1070 video card.

Sound blaster z sound card.

16gb corsair ddr4 ram.

Corsair 650 watt PSU.

27 inch samsung monitor connected via hdmi.

I have to update my Vaio Update software (version 3) to version 4. The instructions on the Sony website say:

1. Download the file to a temporary or download directory (Please note this directory for reference later).
2. Uninstall the existing VAIO Update and restart the unit.
3. After the unit has restarted, please go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click EP0000162589.exe.
4. Follow the instructions displayed in the installation wizard.
5. After installation is completed, please restart the computer.

All is clear to me, except that I don't know whether "unit" is another word for "computer", or something different altogether...? If they mean the same thing, then the same word should be used. Anyway, I don't know whether I have to reboot my computer after removing Vaio Update 3 or whether I can install version 4 directly after removing version 3. Sorry if this sounds silly.

Answer:Solved: Restart the unit=restart the computer? Didn't understand Vaio Update instruct

ok download the file to for example my docs next uninstall version3 and restart your comp next get the file from my docs double click the exe follow the wizard instructions when finished restart again hope this helps

Hi All,

I have read many, many other threads that address infinite reboot loops, but none of the solutions have resolved my issue. I am hoping the community might be able to help me identify this problem.

I have just recently replaced my CPU and MB with the items listed below. After installing hardware, I ran KillDisk on the HDD, which will zero out the entire drive. The computer boots normally and will load into windows installation without issue. However, once Windows reboots to start windows for the first time, it is unable to do so. The load windows logo screen will load, and approximately right before Windows would normally load my screen goes black, the system turns off, sits off for about 1-2 seconds, and then turns itself back on and repeats this boot process. It turns off and restarts at the same time every time.

Steps I have done so far in an attempt to resolve the issue but failed with no change in the rebooting behavior:

1) removed all non-essential hardware (CPU, 1 stick of RAM, DVD drive, and Video card were the only things left), and tried reinstalling windows.

2) Swapping out one of the 2 RAM sticks I have to make sure it wasn't defective.

3) Trying to install Windows on a new harddrive to rule out that the HDD was defective.

4) trying to boot from the CD (After the initial install had partially finished) to see if HDD was related in anyway.

5) Installed a very simple DVI video card to see if ATI card may be the cause.

6) Resetting CMOS and rein... Read more

Answer:One initial Install Restart, Windows gets stuck in a restart loop

Sorry you are having these problems. You have already done the most logical things. If it's not the memory, or the video card, or the hard drive, and the only things you have changed are the cpu and mobo, then you might wonder if there is a problem with one of the two. You could always boot a live CD of Ubuntu to see how your computer responds. Or XP installation sounds like a great idea for a test.

While I was away I let vidoe play on my monitors and when I came back My PC restarted and my usb key board and mouse did not work. Luckly I have a PS/2 key board connected to my PC for such an emergency. Then from their I shut down the PC but I did a restart and during the shut down phase It gave me a BSOD.
The restart reinitialized both my keyboard and mouse. And when my PC started back up after proper shut down and I let it set for a while it gave me this.

I have a HP pavilion M7590 PC.I have contacted their support and have been told to recover windows. My problem is that the PC boots from startup fine everytime and shutsdown OK everytime. However if I restart it shutsdown then hangs on the Bios HP screen ie the screen (press F1 or esc or recovery drive). THe hard drive lights solildy for a while then goes out and a clicking can be heard.I have tested all the hardware/ memory/ processors everything passes. If i press the power button and hold the PC turns off and when power button pressed again reboots no problem.I know I should just never use restart just the turn off button, but I would like to make my PC better.I did a windows scan and it asked for them to be replaced but I have a recovery drive not a CD and there was no option to point it to there. Although it did sat it could be because it was a different type of windows.I have Win XP Media Centre.I have searched everywhere and it appears I am the only one with this issueHopefully somebody knows.

Answer:My PC does not restart when restart pressed. Cold boot OK

You say"THe hard drive lights solildy for a while then goes out and a clicking can be heard".You need to test your hard drive with the manufacturers software.

I've been noticing it for a little while now, but wasn't always sure it was a problem.  Sometimes, I'd be gone for a few days and come home and notice my computer was off or had restarted.  As this sometimes happens at work with software updates, I didn't pay it much attention.  However, there have been a couple of times where I'd be asleep and wake to a bright light and notice my computer restarted itself, after being in sleep mode for a few hours.Earlier this evening, I woke my computer up to look up an address, and while writing something down, my computer monitor went black, then bluescreened, then restarted.  At that point I came here and went through the beginning processes located here:,46313.0.htmlNow the end of that page is a little contradictory about copy/pasting logs or attaching them, so I'm not sure what method you'd prefer.  I'm going to attach them for now.  I apologize if I misread the instructions.[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]

So, I've been trying out Windows 7, and I've been pleasantly surprised for the most part. However, I've been getting several BSODs, including some 0x124 ones that I didn't have on this same computer using XP. The only new hardware I've installed is a hard drive. Anyways, the non-0x124 ones happen seemingly randomly, and they force the computer to reboot even though I have automatically reboot on error disabled in the system options, so I'm not sure what they are.

The 0x124 stop has only happened twice, but the other ones are more frequent. I'm looking over this thread for help with the 0x124 stops, but I would really appreciate some help with the others! Here are the only two dumps in my minidump folder, which I'm guessing are the 0x124 ones, but I'll post them anyway.

Answer:BSOD, forces restart but have auto restart off

Yes, it contains 1 STOP 0x124 error message. The only possible issue that I could see is with hamachi.sys dated Feb of 2009 and amdxdata.sys dated May of 2009. Beyond that you're stuck with the advice in the STOP 0x124 thread.

Good morning all,

Last night I was tooling around on The Elder Scrolls Online when my computer suddenly turned itself off and back on. Shrugged it off, got back in, tried to log back into the game, and shut down again. Updated vid drivers, ran registry cleaner, repaired game launcher and launched again. At launch, the comp crashed and reset again. Two more times as I tried running as admin to isolate the problem. Finally gave up on the game (figured it was due to the update) and swapped over to a different game. Upon launch of that game, the computer reset again. However this time it wouldn't even let me log into windows. Either after the password screen, or before it even gets there (but always during Windows startup) it resets.

Ran in safe mode + networking. No problems. Tried watching some you-tube videos on some repair reset again. Ran memtest86 on 4 passes. No errors. Woke up, got back on, same issues. Tried to watch videos in safe mode....and at random time it resets computer again. No other actions have been able to replicate the shut down.

The first shutdown produced an error when i restarted stating that d3dx9_42.dll was missing. I clicked OK on the screen, and it reset again.

Welcome to SevenForums,

If you can still log onto windows desktop, you can try reinstall the Microsoft DirectX End-Users Runtimes(June 2010) full package from HERE

Seeing you have a custom build i assume you've got the Windows 7 DVD which can help you doing a System Repair directly from the DVD or accessing to the System Repair options at boot..

i keep encounter this auto restart error therefore i decided to uncheck the automatic restart checkbox in system properties to get a BSOD so that i know what happen, but even if i uncheck it, my cpu still auto restart without generating a BSOD

i also checked my windows folder but there are no \Windows\Minidump in it

Answer:Auto restart even if uncheck automatic restart

Upload Dump Files:
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service - then post the link to it.
Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file): Set MiniDump

Hey guys,
im posting on behalf of my brother who gets frustrated and just wants to give up

Basically what was happening was during game play his PC would randomly shut off. It got worse as time progressed, more fequent restarts and then not even being able to power the system up.

Now he has been getting a message after the post screen saying:
Windows did not start up please choose from a start up option (somethingto that extent) then you can choose from safe mode or regular start up.

The problem here is that you cant select anything,no keyboard response and then windows automatically tries to load (windows load screen) and then a BSOD appears very briefly and the system restarts.

Originally I thought his problem was cooling, with the random restarts. But then it started restarting after about a minute that the PC was on. So I thought a dieing PSU. But the windows restarting has got me thinking a bad hard drive or something as an extra bonus to bad power/cooling.

This was a PC purchased from Ibuypower about 3 years ago. I hate that company with a passion.

I've been directed here by Reid (from the HijackThis Help section.
"Hi debell,

These errors appear to be software related. My suggestion is for you to post in the Windows XP section of the forum, giving them all the detail and explanations you've given me, and let the experts there give you a hand with this."

Here are the 'event' logs. Plus some event that might shed some light on the problem.
A little while ago i had to power off. Upon restarting (after more than 2 hours) the display would 'disappear' while still in the boot-up process. I shut down with the 'power' button on the PC & restarted in Safe mode. That worked. But again a 're-start' from there would go through the whole process but before the 'windows is starting' screen the display disappeared. In fact the monitor seemed to be dis-connected from the source - it has power-supply and 'indicator showed interface with comp - then abruptly the connection itself was gone. Finally after few more tries with the same results, i Chose 'Enable VGA mode' from the startup options screen (where Safe Mode etc are offered as options) That worked. I saw your mail & replying accordingly.
Thanks very much.

We have 7 computers on a local network 3 of them have local printers 2 and are brand new Vista equiped. we shared the local printers on the vista machines but they are unaccessable from one vista to the other... it works from an XP to a Vista, but not from a Vista to a Vista.... go figure.... When we try to add the printers, the error message that we get is: "windows cannot connect to the printer. the local print spooler service is not running. please restart the spooler or restart the machine."
I would appreciate any help...
Thank you

Answer:windows cannot connect to the printer the local print spooler service is not running please restart the spooler or restart the m

I ran into this exact same issue today.
The way we fixed it was by checking the Properties on the Print Spooler service under services.msc.
Go to the Log On Tab and make sure that the 'Local System account' option is selected along with the 'Allow service to interact with desktop' box.
Then set the Print spooler service to auto and start it.  After that you should have no problem installing your printer (s).

hi all,

I was reinstalling windows xp home and it stayed in the same position for like an hour,
so I had no choice but to either restart or turnoff. I did this and now I can even
boot past the logo screen.
I have tried inserting XP home disk but it does not have any previous version
installed and only has the option to format the drive. GRR
I tried safe mode, vga, last known config but all dont work .
It seems that Windows/system32/config/system.log is the file (also get blue screen of
death after trying recovery console, but hard drive is still in tact.
Fortunately I have backed up most of my system. I would still like to get it back though.
I havent got any servie packs so I cant turn of 'disable automatic restart..'
I can obtain a professional xp disk as my xp home is only an 'upgrade' verison (whats
the difference?), will this help?

I also cant use recovery console as every time I select '1' it just restarts and
I cant use the cmd prompt after it.

I have checked my cables and inside computer, all seems intact.
Reset bios as well

Please help anyone, I have run out of ideas.
Many advance thanks,

When I press restart my computer shuts down (screen goes black), but it's still on (light on power button). However, it never comes back up. It just sits there until I do a hard reset by holding down the power button until it turns off, then turning it on again. Is there a fix for this?

Answer:T440P doesn't restart on restart

When I try to restart the computer from the start menu it shuts off. It takes about an hour or two before you get the HP logo and then windows starts. It has been doing this for a few months now. Other than this it goes to the internet and does everything
else just fine. At this time I do not have 800 dollars to purchase a new computer. What is the problem. In BIOS there is section that says "BIOS days start, from Sunday to Saturday, with hours and minutes.
What should the parameters for this section be? I have a HP OMNI 120-1120t Intel (Leon) IC NA PC, BIOS LEO_707.rom V7.07, that is running WIN7 PRO 64-Bit Service Pack 1.
How can I stop this from happening?

Computer fais to complete shutdown restart cycle after specifying restart computer following software installation or simply hitting restart button.
Software is w7 sp1 64bits
computer is dell studio xps 8100.
Problem occurs almost every time, works ok once in a while.
PC performs shutdown and then screen goes into power saving mode.
In order to restart pc I have to hold the power on button for 5 seconds in order for the hard disk to stop etc... Then using the power on button restarts the pc normally.

It reboots while it is rebooting! I got it to safe mode to check the settings for system failure, and it restarted again. All this is happening after I told Windows NOT to restart with a system failure. The only thing that has been able to get me back to normal is a System Restore initiated when I enter Safe Mode. Help! Whenever I try to restart my computer (XP SP3)(i.e., Start, Turn Off Computer, Restart) my computer hangs at "Windows is Shutting Down" and does not shut down. I have a Dell XPS M1730 Laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate x32. I recently had a few nasty viruses that I hopefully removed completely. The problem I am facing now may not be related to the viruses but I do not know for sure.

Whenever I select the Restart option from the Start menu the computer goes through it's normal shut down procedure but instead of restarting when it should, it shuts down abruptly. The Shutdown option works correctly and at the very end of the process, the laptop turns off quietly. However, when I select the Restart option, at the very end of the shutdown process when it should restart, it shuts off and you can hear the hard drive turn off. At least I think its the hard drive, but there is a noise at that time. The sound reminds me of the noise it makes after the power is cut off to a computer.

Now this also takes place whenever there is any restart being applied. Windows restarting after installing updates, installed drivers needing a restart, anti-virus programs needing to restart to remove viruses, etc...

Laptop Specs:
Intel Dual Core T9300 @ 2.5GHz
Windows 7 Ultimate x32 SP1

I have tried to run the sfc /scannow and no problems are listed when it's finished. I followed the instructions listed at this website = Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista

Answer:System Restart Will Not Restart At All - It Just Shuts Down

This won't fix your problem, but what happens when you do a shut down by using the Shut Down option on the Start menu?

Have you tried doing an sfc /scanner? Basically it scans all the files and sees whether they are broken or not functioning properly. If you have, say, a theme for Windows Explorer (ex. the navagation buttons) or if you have modified your system files, then it will be removed. If you want to keep them, back up the files before doing the scan.

Anyways, instructions are below:

I have a computer in the lounge which doesn't have an internet connection so the specs on my profile do NOT match the computer in question.

Basically, the computer has an AMD 6 Core processor, 8GB of DDR3 memory a single harddrive and a dvd drive, if I go into the bios and then choose save and exit on normal computer it saves and restarts but this one saves and powers down and then does nothing which pretty much rules out the operating system being the problem.

If I turn the computer off and then tell it to restart it will turn off but it doesn't start back up...

What could be the problem and how can I test/check the system to see whats the matter?

Any ideas would be much appreciated
- Ryan

Answer:Restart doesn't actually restart nor does "Save and Exit" when in BIOS

Is there a bios update available?

Have you tried updating it?

Any other problems with the system at all?

Then no sound at all until I restart. The problem seemed to arise shortly after I installed Norton 360 (an upgrade to the Norton Internet Security I was running). I have had a "chat" with Norton Support twice now, and they were worthless. They don't even read carefully what you're telling them, so they try to make the problem something other than what you have said.I would be so grateful if you can help me fix this problem. Thanks.

When I click the restart button the computer shuts down but does not restart. My computer has been cleaned and is/should be virus/spyware/malware free. I have run adaware, spybot, spysweeper, spyblaster, spyguard, processguard, norton AV, highjackthis, window washer, winpatrol, and zonealarm firewal. I use Firefox browser and thunderbird email, not that any of this is important , but just to give an idea that my computer should be realtively clean.
Even when a program asks me to click here to reboot, all i get is shutdown and have to push button to restart. In the grand scheme of things not a big deal, but I was just curious what could be causing this.
thanks for your help

I'm using windows 2000 pro on a new system format/build after my old motherboard went bad.
It's working except when I go to the start /shutdown/restart
tab it justs goes to a black screen and sits there permanently!
I tried a repair on the OS thinkin that was the problem but with no effect. If I select start or shutdown it just goes to a black screen with 1 little blinking cursorin the top left corner and all the power is still on (fan running) and all .I just have never seen this before!

Any HELP/Suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Note: I have done a couple of tweaks in the registry since installing everything but I'm not sure if this is related but the 1
tweak was something to do with timeout settings on program
hangs I believe!

It will shutdown using the start/shutdown/restart in safemode !

I've also tried creating the shortcut on my desktop(new/shortcut/shutdown /r) but it says shutdown file not found !

Answer:won't restart using restart icon

try re-starting through task manager. if it dows not work through that then you have a problem with your OS. open task manager, select shutdown then select the "restart" option.

How can I know what caused the Microsoft Windows You must restart your computer to apply these changes. Before restarting save any open files and close all programs. Restart Now Restart Later

It looks legitimate. Probably is but I want to be sure and safe before agreeing to restart. I only need to verify if it's hardware or drivers because I swapped a DVD-ROM for a DVD-RW, connected front USB ports and sound to motherboard, moved USB headset to front USB.

I've been surfing and downloaded a few programs but didn't install any.

Usually I use Linux (because its faster easier more secure and just better) but in the past week I have had to install Windows XP pro sp2 on a seperate hard disk for remote desktop connectivity with the Windows system at work.
Installation wouldn't work for whatever reason, so I had to install win2000. I thought I would keep that on, but unfortunatly updates would not work at all. So I then relatively painlessly updated to XP and installed SP2. From there it was working, and everything about it worked (apart from in games I get odd white lines on textures, but thats probably for another thread). After installing all the latest updates, graphics drivers etc I put steam on for some games (mainly cs). During the games occasionally it would freeze the game and lock up the system and if left long enough would bluescreen, say something about nv4_disp.dll and dump my physical memory to disk or something.
Now whenever I try to boot (into any one of the options on the safe mode menu thing) it loads, flashes a BSOD and then restarts.
If anyone can offer any help I would be very grateful.
Cheers, Lee.

Answer:BSOD, restart, BSOD, restart - constant cycle

It's the Nvidia drivers that caused this. Find your windows XP cd and boot from it - go to the recovery console and type chkdsk /r. It might fix it so you can boot - if you can log on afterwards, immediately uninstall the nvidia drivers.

Hi. Whenever I'm asked if I wish to shut down and reboot now (after, say, uninstalling a program), I say 'yes'. More often than not, however, my restart only gets as far as the 'enter BIOS' screen (is that the POST screen?). To proceed, I have to press the reset button next to my main 'On' button.

Can anyone suggest why this is? Mine's is a new self-build which I'm very proud of bar this wee glitch...

My thanks in advance of any guidance offered.

Answer:"Restart computer now?" - fails to restart

This post is about a similar problem:
System hangs on soft start. Cold boot works fine - Prebuilt - Systems

A BIOS update fixed the booting but it was not without hassles. You might check if there's a BIOS update for your motherboard. Also see if there's a way to go back to how it is currently if the update fails. There's always some risk with these firmware updates.

Edit: But I'm a software guy. Hang on and see if you get better answers from some of the hardware gurus here.

Edit2: as a work-around, when you don't need to use the installed program right away, click to decline the reboot. Most of the time it's rebooting to let go of files used during the install and will just delete them prior to log on. Some programs actually need the reboot to work. But if a warm boot consistently works from the Start Menu you may save the risk of a BIOS update. Unless it's another issue. But I suspect it's a BIOS glitch.

Hello everyone,

I have searched around a bit to see if others have ran into this problem, but I have had no luck so far. When I start my computer, it pops up with the standard menu it uses when an OS error has caused a restart. I can't get it too load windows using safe mode, last known good configuration, or normal mode. I never even see the windows loading screen, it restarts immediately.

Here is what I have tried:
1) I ran a check disk using the recovery console but it did not fix the problem.
2) I manually backed up the SYSTEM, SAM, DEFAULT, SECURITY, and SOFTWARE files from the root\windows\system32\config folder. I then replaced those files with ones from a few days ago located in the root\system volume information\ folder. It did not fix my problem.
3) I'm about to re-install windows when I decide to press f8 on boot and disable automatic restarts on system failure just to see if I'm missing some sort of BSOD. Windows completely loaded without any problems.
4) This confused me so I reversed the actions I took in step 2 (above) just to see whether it would boot with the original files as long as I chose "Disable Automatic Restarts on System Failure." It loaded windows without a problem.
5) I restarted to see whether it would boot normally or not. Again, it wouldn't load windows with any options other than the "Disable automatic restarts on system failure" option.

At this point, I'm pretty confused. Could the OS be mistakin... Read more

My system is constantly restarting when I first turn it on. It is stable right now for how long remains a mystery. it has even retsarted in the middle of things. I talked with compaq on the otherside of the world and they ran me through a few things including changing some settings. In the end of this first incident I finally got a blue screen "driver_IRQL_not_less_or_equal" which is where the system would give every time I did a restart. The end result was they could not find it so they suggested a recovery. I used "killdisk" to wipe the c: clean. I used my recovery partition to reload. The result is the same it wants to continuously restart save this one time. I have used spybot, adware, trojanhunter, icleaner, nortonAV, and system tools to find nothing. The only time it did not restart cont. was when i was using DOS to run scandisk.??? Any suggestions. I have took out the modem and switch out mwmmory sticks to no aval.

when you install a program in win xp and it says to restart your computer... could you just open your task manager and end explorer.exe and new task and start it up again?

most of the changes are done in the registry correct? so when you reload explorer does it make those changes acting like a restart?

Answer:do u have to restart?

No it isn't the same...

but try it anyway.

Sometimes the program rarely doesn't need a reboot.

Sometimes though it does.

If it does it will simply complete the installation next time you reboot (best case) or be unable to because of file corruption or something similar.

You may well discover that a few services are now doubled up also as well as a few other anomolies.

Experimenting is good though (hope it isn't a production machine).

Do consider though that Explorer.exe is just a GUI front end to the system and not the OS itself and that most publishers that program for a shutdown do so because they are replacing or updating in place system files or libraries.

Hope this answers your question.

Well it doesnt, tway kes me back to the 6-1 list of all the xps and i start over. A friend told me to try taking the disc out when it says its going to resart but to no avail, it goes to a black screen after the compac screen as if waiting to load the xp disc.

Other friends tell me itss my hard drive, if thats what it is is there any way to fix it or will i need a whole new hard drive.

And while im asking questions, perhaps i should post this in another section, I have another computer that i just reinstalled windows on and now i cant download flash player or even google chrome. But a friend's computer won't do that.It gets as far as the "updating" screen (white text on black background" and stops. It has to be physically switched off and then on again. It then only starts in Safe Mode. So a Start, Shutdown, Shutdown is required and then a reboot. He has tried reinstalling Windows (Win 98SE)over the top but that has made no difference. Has also tried sfc but there doesn't appear to be any missing/corrupt files. He has also tried Norton Systemworks and fixed all problems found.Any suggestions, please.

Answer:PC won't "restart"

Sorry - I have re-read this a coupl eof times and it is still not making much sense to I being a bit dense this morning? Have you tried a soft boot (Ctrl+Alt+Del)...It's your middel paragraph that confuses me...

Question: Restart

This may have been ask before, but i look and haven't found the post.Trying to fix a friend computer,Everytime you push the power button and starts only get to the windows screen where the green line goes back and forth and just keep restarting.I tried to reboot in safe mode and in safe mode with command prompt.I can't tell you the systems resources, cause i can't log on.But its a HP Pavillion 500...any help would be grateful...

Try a repair install

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install

Question: xp Won't restart

Hi,When ever I want to restart my pc it logs off etc and screen goes blank but then won't restart up again, base unit just sits there wurring away and nothing happens even when pushing on/off power button. I have to turn off at mains then turn back on again with power button to get it restarted. This does not seem to cause a problem with it starting up ie it does not have to go through checking disc for problems which indicates it has logged off and saved settings but it just won't start up again.Any help on this would be appreciated.

Answer:xp Won't restart

Try checking startup progs in msconfig as one of those progs running in background may be having trouble uninitialising.

Question: Pc Restart

hello,im having a problem that when i put on the AC that is 3 room away,my pc will restart,my UPC is not working at this time, its not always,

my pc tech told me to switch off the ups from the wall socket to see if its stands, yes it does and switched off the pc after 15 minutes,at this time im confused,

is it battery fault?

Answer:Pc Restart

A concern to me would be a overloaded building circuit.
Just because it's a different room doesn't always mean that it is a different circuit.

It depends how the building was wired, proper grounds, the air conditioners circuitry and surge amps.
Lots and lots of things.

With or without a UPC you should not have this problem.

1) a capitol E with the back of it rounded and the bottom line slanting downward.
2) a small letter n with a squiggly on top of it.
3) a square.
Then is says: "Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, Click the start button and then click search.

I can and do close the box and everything seems Ok, but I am still concerned about this message, as I don't know what it refers to.

Everytime I boot my computer AVG reports a virus and asks me to put it in the vault and to restart my computer.

What it says is wrong is RTHDCPL.EXE. When I looked this up on google I see its a program that windows requires?

I'm confused.

Should I just continue to ignore the AVG recommendation ??

Thanks for your help.

Answer:AVG wants to restart

It's in the Startup List, Entry 3 of 'Top Keep Entries'
'This is a valid program that is required to run at startup.'

Could be a false positive, can you report it to AVG, through your AVG program.

Do not delete, you can have AVG ignore it.

Run an online scanner (e.g. ESET) as a double check.

After rebooting ME will shut down, but wont restart (black screen, flashing cursor top left corner)GF4Ti4600. Have tried several drivers...please help..

Answer:Win ME will not restart.

I've had this myself, usually after tinkering with registry, or some dodgy uninstall routine! I presume you mean you get the black screen at shut down, and the PC does not shut down properly. I think this will need a press of your reset button on the PC. Then consider restoring your computer to an earlier time.

Hey all, I'm troubleshooting a problem with my pc atm, the original thread is

I was wondering, can you restart the computer through the command prompt? Working with xp pro x64. What I'm looking to check is to see if the hd is still functional and its actually just the screen locking up due to a bad video card.

A good question would be, if the video card was going bad, and the screen freezes, is it possible the HD is still functioning properly? If so, then I should be able to do do windows button + r to open the run function, then type cmd to open the command prompt, all while the screen is still 'frozen' right?

Hence, given this would work, is there a command to restart or shutdown the computer?

Answer:restart pc through cmd?

Question: PC won't restart?

I installed Dreamweaver CS4 in my computer, but after installation it asks to restart. The problem is restarting takes a long time, the monitor is just blank but the CPU is still working. I tried to fix my Win XP SP2 OS using the CD, but after I changed the booting priority to my CD ROM and about to save changes the computer just hangs. I already scanned the computer for viruses and cleaned the registry, but noting happened. Please help...

Answer:PC won't restart?

Be sure to unplug all external USB devices, take discs out of the CD drive etc. You need to change your boot priority to CD to do any kind of maintenance. If you restart your computer and it does not POST, give a beep after it scans the hardware, then you have a hardware problem.

Question: Restart

Yes, so my computer was running fine, but when I turned it off to restart it won't let me back in, it keeps going to a window and running a file backup that doesn't know how to fix the situation and just restarts my computer and the whole thing happens all over again

Plug the Windows 7 disk into the CD Drive. Then change the boot mode from HDD to CD Drive. Using the Windows 7 Disk you can do a Repair/Recovery option which should fix the problem.

Question: XP won't restart

It's been already 2 months that my PC won't restart.
I'm using Windows XP.
Every time I select Restart from the Shut Down menu, XP
will close all the programs and the "shutting down.." message window will disappear, and then all I see is a blue screen.

I'm not talking about the crash screen, but about the wallpaper
of the Windows Classis theme.

Also, the desktop icons will disappear, with my wallpaper.

At that point, I have to click the reset button on my computer.

Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

My PC whenever I try to do a RESTART instead of shudown will just hang. WIndows will shutdown but the PC will not restart, screen just goes black. If I manually hit reset everything is fine.

Any ideas on this?

Answer:PC will not Restart?

Try this:

Reboot or shut down PC quickly
For a one-click method to quickly shut down or reboot your system without the fuss of going through the Start menu, make use of the Shutdown command, a command line utility in XP.

Here's how you can set up a restart button on your desktop:

1. Create a shortcut (Right-click on desktop, select New > Shortcut).

2. For location, type the following:

shutdown -r -t 0

3. Click Next, enter a name for the shortcut ("Restart" is appropriate), and click Finish.

When you click your Restart shortcut, Windows XP will reboot *automagically*!

The "-r" switch tells XP to reboot. If you'd like the shortcut to shut off your PC instead, change it to "-s"; to simply log off, change it to "-l". The "-t 0" sets the timeout (in seconds), so up this value if you find the need for it. To force running applications to close, add "-f" -- be careful with this one!

For more information on Shutdown, type "shutdown" in a command prompt window (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt), or search for Shutdown in Windows XP's Help and Support Center.Click to expand...
