Program/Application Connection Issues

Question: Program/Application Connection Issues

Hello all. I have myself a rather vexing issue going on with my operating system (XP x64 Edition SP2) that has me baffled, especially since it has survived an almost foolproof barrage of fixes.

Basically, I noticed very recently that one of my programs that requires an internet connection (P2P Program) is unable to connect to the internet, despite having worked fine for almost 2 years now. I blew it off at first, and when I went back again to try it I had the same problem. I ended up downloading another, similar program, and had that problem again. I noticed after this, that some of my games (and other applications) that require an internet connection to update and the like, also are now unable to connect to the internet to perform their functions. Even one of my malware scanners, which requires that it is up to date before being able to run, could not update itself (I manually updated it).

Not sure if this is relevant, but my clock was reset by itself to July 1st 2005, and after I manually reset it, it didn't change itself back (yet).

So in a nutshell, I did some research and found one other guy with a similar problem to my own, which he identified as a worm in his WINDOWS registry. He didn't specify how he removed it.

I've since run my anti-virus software (BitDefender), CCleaner, Ad-aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, HijackThis, and SUPERAntiSpyware and I've had no luck. Malwarebytes discovered some potentially false positives ignored by Ad-aware and my anti-virus, which I deleted anyway because they were not important files SUPERAntiSpyware did the same thing. A restart later and the problem persisted. HijackThis discovered a few minor things that does not appear to have fixed the issue.

I also recently noticed that Google Chrome (my secondary browser) no longer connects to any sites.

If anyone has another potential fix, I'd really appreciate it. This issue has me close to pulling out some hairs--I mean, it's not something that appears to be crippling my computer (everything else functions as it should), but being unable to update some of my games and applications is a huge issue. Being unable to play some of them is even worse (as an update is necessary before I can even sign in, etc).

Today is the start of the first week before spring break, so I'm being hammered with assignments to do and all of that fun stuff, so having to deal with this isn't helping. Any help would make my day. Thanks, guys.

Preferred Solution: Program/Application Connection Issues

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

BitDefender was the culprit. Unfortunately, just disabling the firewall didn't help, I had to completely uninstall it to discover the problem is now fixed.

Be wary of BitDefender's gameSafe I suppose.

Hello. I have been having problems with any 3rd party program connecting to the internet. It ranges from the programs I use from td ameritrade, to ad-aware trying to do updates, to utorrent... I have already made sure that all the programs are allowed in the windows firewall. I have also accessed the router/modem combo that my ISP had given me recently and tured off the firewall setting in the router.

I thought it could have been a port issue so after accessing the router I found there were no advanced options to do port forwarding. I then called my ISP tech support and they assured me they only close 6 ports that and the rest are open for communication and advised me that it was a local (windows) problem. I have even shut down the firewall completely and still have no luck. Any input/suggestions would be much appriciated.

Hi all. So I have a problem and I'm stumped. I don't know how I did this, but all of my applications try to open with the same app. And when ever I change it, then all the other apps change to as well. Example:

Google Chrome is trying to open with itunes.
So I change Google Chrome so It will open with Google Chrome
Now WorldofWarcraft, Internet explorer, calculator, Utorrent etc are all automatically changed so that they want to open with Google Chrome as well.

And I can't figure out how to separate the programs so they each open with their own respective apps.
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Answer:application issues. MAJOR issues!

What has probably happened is that you've associated .lnk files with a program. These are their own type of files, used for shortcuts, which by default just say "look over there" to point to the file they represent. They aren't the program, they just point to it. Instead of following the default, you've accidentally instructed the computer to open the links themselves in chrome etc.

The simplest solution is to download the registry fix for link files.
You'll have to unzip the file and then double click to merge into the registry.
Through any prompts, and if necessary reboot your machine. That should get all links working normally.

Finally, the file that you actually have to download is located here:

I don't know the difference between an Application and a Program. Thought the Geektionary would help, but didn't find anything there.

I have 2 Dell Windows XP computers.

If I want to copy something such as Microsoft Money from one pc and install it on the other, what exactly do I need to copy? The application or the program?

And where do I find what I need to copy? :confused

Any help in this area is so appreciated.

Answer:Application vs. Program

Well basically an Application is an executable file such as Notepad.exe whereas a program can contain more than one application along with numerous other files such as DLL files.

Since the days when Windows had a registry it is far more difficult just to copy a program as it often has numerous entries in the registry which will point to locations of files within the program - this is why prgrams these days are generally installed. Only if the program contains a small number of files or is a self contained executable (such as Notepad which is both a program and an application rolleyes) can a program be copied.

Hope that's all clear. :confusedrolleyes

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

I'm trying to execute an application (simulator) using a system call from my program. Once the application (simulator) starts, I want my program to perform certain tasks on the GUI of the simulator: fill in certain fields, start the simulation, collect the results, and close the application. In essence, I need to emulate the keyboard stokes on the GUI of the simulator using my C program. I must interface to the GUI since I only have the executable available to me. Can any one recommend a way to perform this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:How to interface an application's GUI with a C program

Ive never done it, but I'd recommend looking into sockets, you can send data between a host program and server program and such.

Hello can anyone please tell is there any back up software that can back up a particular application for me? For example, if there is any update for a software and i want to back up the software before updating it, is there any way to do so? I know i can back up the whole computer using Norton Ghost but what if i just want to back up a particular software?

Answer:Backup program for a particular application

Not generally doable. When programs are installed, they make changes in the registry of the computer and in various parts of the Windows operating system. Simply finding a program that will copy over the files, will not copy the registry changes or any other simply copies files. That is why people who try this run into problems. To date I know of no program that copies applications into a useful format to save. There are migration programs and imaging software etc, but nothing for single applications to my knowledge.

I can load it and it seems to load fine (if I load another version and connect to the game server it gives me an error saying, "Client already connected").

When I look into Task Manager it is listed under processes, but not applications.

Please help.

Answer:Program in processes but not application.

Anyone using this HOT rated download, and will it have a direct or indirect benefit regarding popup or popunder ads? The screen shot looks pretty impressive. I'm already employing CCleaner for the drive.

Answer:CleanCache application/program

This is more of a question for the Software Forum.

Using this or CCleaner is not necesarily going to stop popups? It is not a popup stopper? It's a drive cleaner which will remove some items that could possibly be related to some problems you are having.

What is the worst legit program/application you've ever used in Windows? Exclude mention of antivirus and anti malware because there's already a popular thread about it on MT.

To moderators, please move this thread if I've posted it in the wrong place.

Answer:Worst program/application you've ever used

Backup software, it made me loose all backups, twice. First one "only" corrupted all files.

But the worst was the one from Google. I removed online files and upon sync, it removed local files. I had to redo everything.

I have sworn never to use any automatic backup software ever again, manual backups for me, only copy/paste locally or online.

I have a flash application running within a secure site. The program uses resources such as video clips and powerpoint presentations. Video clips work OK, but when I ask it to open a .ppt, a popup window appears briefly and then disappears again.
Popup blocker is disabled, and I don't have google or yahoo toolbars.
It's running in a trusted site with all the settings set to minimum security.
there is nothing wrong with the ppt - it runs perfectly on my pc, and from within my secure site.
And (perhaps crucially) it all works perfectly in Firefox!

This all leads me to conclude that there is a setting in IE7 that is wrong, but I can't for the life of me figure out what.

Can anybody help?
The ppt is one of the Resources within the SCORM-compliant "OCR PE AS level Teaching Support" from Heinemann. This is running as a course within the Fronter VLE. (Just on the off-chance that there is someone with specific knowledge of this!)

Thanks in advance.

Is it possible in Windows 7 (either via a windows feature or an add-on program) to password protect individual programs or software so that when you try to run the software you first need to provide a password? Please note this is not the same as UAC in Windows 7. I want to be able to lock down certain programs so that when a user tries to run the program (say Internet Explorer or Microsoft Access) they will be prompted for a password. This would be very handy in a shared user scenario. Is this possible via the group policy editor? Thanks!

Answer:Password protect an application or program

This is not supported by Windows but third party applications may provide this feature. Windows security doesn't work that way.Windows security is based on the users account and the groups it is a member of. This is in the files and folder security properties. Don't change anything here unless you know what you are doing.Note that if the user is using an admin account he can evade any and all restrictions you might impose.

My family computer is a desktop PC running Windows Vista with McAfee. I make sure to run all updates ASAP. My updates are current through yesterday. When I tried to update my computer this morning, the updates failed with an unknown error. "Error(s) found: code 80070103 Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

This morning, I turned on the computer to find that McAfee has been disabled, Windows Defender has been disabled, and that I cannot turn them back on. Additionally, I cannot run any programs. Invariably, I get the response "program.exe is not a valid Win32 application" regardless of whether I run the program from the C drive or a USB.

Neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox are working; I can only access the internet by opening windows explorer and typing an address into the address bar in that window.

I have tried running McAfee in safe mode, but get the same message. I tried the "repair computer" function when I boot the computer, but it insists that I have another drive attached (though I have unplugged the camera, flash drvie, external hard drive)... There is nothing attached (except for the keyboard and mouse). I have tried restoring my computer to a previous restore point only to be told by the computer that there are no restore points.

I started Googling and thought that it may be the Bagle virus because of the "is not a valid Win32 application" but found none of the files listed on the Removing Bagle Infections page... Read more

I'm troubleshooting a Windows XP (SP2) eMachine (with a fresh OS install on a new hard drive - no original eMachine software remains on the system) and I've never encountered such a persistent problem: certain applications (Fruit Loops, Adobe Acrobat Reader, among others) run fine after installation, but after a reboot they will not run. Their shortcuts, as well as the actual program executables, lose their original icons and are mysteriously changed to the generic window icon (the one Windows will use for a file type is doesn't recognize.) When I try to run these programs, using the desktop shortcut OR the actual executable, I get the error dialog box: "This program is not a valid Win32 application." This happens to several applications, while others (Pro Tools, Acid) remain unaffected and can be executed w/o any problem.
*Note: this computer is not connected to the Internet, so it is unlikely that this is some type of virus.

What could be causing this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hello Everyone,

I've finally had enough. I am sick and tired of using windows control panel to uninstall programs. Why? Because 1/2 the time I use the add/remove programs thing it doesnt uninstall the program completly. It will leave folders, files, registry entries, hidden crap, and who knows what else still on my computer from the program I wanted to uninstall. Then I have to go back and try to delete them manually, then pray that a registry cleaner will find the rest (which usually doesnt happen).

I'm looking for something that will completely remove EVERYTHING when I uninstall a program. I dont care if it costs money or if its free, as long as it works.

Thank you if you can help.

EDIT: on a side note. Also looking for an easy to use free macro program. Somthing that I can use to press a key stoke, have a few minute delay, and repeat the key stroke. Then loop that untill I press stop.

Hey guys, I realize that I am not the only person that has encountered this problem, as my research has shown. I tried to ready some similar posts and problems on this forum and others, but I seem to get stuck at certain steps. Here is my situation. Im on a Dell latitude d630 running windows vista. I fell asleep watching Dexter online and when I woke up there was a new looking Anti-Virus program on my task bar that i do not remember installing. The program showed hundreds of infections and was prompting me to delete only if i bought their antivirus. After realizing I could not delete these infections i tried to close the program and open my Malwarebytes Anti Malware and also Synamatec Antivirus. Both programs failed to open, and an error message bubbled off of the "Antivirus" icon. As soon as this happened I tried harder to download new antivirus and to get this off my comp. But no matter what I download, I am unable to install/open. I cannot open task manager, and recently new virus alerts have been popping up. One says i have an infiltration alert about trojans and password stealing attacks, and when I press stay unprotected www.*censored*.com pops up. I tried to fix this going off what you said to others, but I would appreciate a little one on one help to walk me through this, as each case may be different entirely. Thanks a lot!

Hi,WinXP Home, sp2.I've been looking in my C:\Program Files and i've come across 2 'application' icons that i've not noticed before. One is called 'Delete.exe' (size 40kb) and the other is called 'SetAttrib.exe' (size 44kb), both created 22/2/2006. One says modified 30th Nov 2004, the laptop wasn't even built then. The other says modified 21st Jan 2005. There's no information for either in the 'summary' tab. I've done a full scan with Norton, Ad-Aware SE, A-Squared and Ewido and everythings coming up clean. Has anyone any idea what these application icons could be please.Cheers Chris.

Answer:Unknown Application Icons in C:\Program Files

Try right clicking on the files and looking at their properties to see who which company) they belong to.

Anyone know of a program that will capture every keystroke you do and send it to a specific application you want?
Lets say I am typing in an application and then the program captures my keystrokes and sends it to another application? Please does anyone know of anything that does this? And link please?

Answer:Program that captures keystrokes and sends to another application?

I'm not sure this site's Terms of Service allow help to be provided for such programs. There's no way to know why you want such information, and some uses could be illegal.

Hello, this is my first time using this forum so I apologize if I do something wrong.

So normally, whenever I hover my mouse over a program located on the taskbar, I get a preview screen showing what is currently being viewed on that program. I can still get that, however, it never shows itself above the active program (last program I've clicked).

This happens with each and every program I have opened and tried. I tested the method of having the active program sitting in a place where it would only slightly conceal the preview (not maximized). Then having inactive programs (I've clicked on something else besides them last) behind the active one and the preview. Then I can see that that the preview will cover all inactive programs but the active program will still cover the preview.

I hope I've detailed what's happening well enough. I don't remember when this first started happening but I do know that it is not supposed to function like this. The preview should always be visible and on top no matter if there are active programs or not.

I also tried to get a picture of it happening, but it's kinda hard to take a picture of something that requires the active program to not hide itself (like snipping tool does).

I would really like a program that would allow me to fill out an application/document right in the PDF file, without printing it out first and then scanning it back onto the computer.

Is there anyway to do this?

Hi I have been having problems lately with System Restore, Magnify, and WordPad (the only ones i have noticed so far) that when I start them they give me an error stating they're "not valid win32 application(s)". I was able to fix my system restore by opening command and doing a 'SFC /SCANNOW' scan. I was wondering if there is anythig else I can type in command to hopefully fix the other two programs? Or are there any other solutions to this problem?

I have a broken laptop that has everything on it. I did back up to an
external hard drive Segate using the Bounce Back Express. When I get
my laptop fixed, I would like to transfer application/programs from laptop
to desktop, both have XP Professional. I know I will need program with
this data cable, but which one. My last questions would be can I transfer
programs/files with that program from a laptop with XP Professional to
Windows 7. Buying a new laptop within 10 days.
Please Advise.

Answer:Can anyone recommend a Application & file transfer program?

Transfering your files back depends on the method of how you have backed them up.
If you have done it using Bounce Back Express, maybe this application has option for restoring the files?

Also if you want to transfer application files from XP to Win 7 this will not work.
You will need to reinstall all applications on Windows 7 and then transfer your other files such as video, music, pictures etc.

Error signature:
AppName: wordpad.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.1106 ModName: hpzntp07.dll

Can someone please help me asap? I cant print anything at all because of this. I have a Dell, WinXP.

Which HP printer are you using?

If Windows XP detected and used its own drivers, you should download the up-to-date drivers. (hpzntp07.dll is a HP driver)

Hi all,

My vista box is getting a little slow from time. Like everything freezes on the computer, and then I have to wait a little bit and it comes back. Often this happens when firefox has been used for a while. I'm not sure if this is firefox's entire fault, so I was wondering what free program is out there that I can use to monitor what application is accessing the disk. I tried googling but just found a bunch of hard drive monitoring (temperature, fail rate, etc.) programs.

Answer:application hard drive usage program

You should be able to use the resource monitor built into Windows to see what programs are writing to disk.

Third party utilities are available as well, such as ProcessMonitor and FileMonitor.

Hi all,

I'm having a rather strange issue that I haven't been able to trace, mostly because although the error itself makes sense to me, I have no idea what it means.

I'm using Windows XP pro, 32 bit with service pack 3 on an HP 8510W notebook. Recently I noticed that every time I closed a program, or a program exited properly, I received an error that looked something like this.

notepad.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x00bb1f3e" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program

iexplore.exe - Application Error

taskmgr.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x009c1f3e" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
And so on, with everything from Reaper to firefox to Task Manager. I've also noticed two other things, which are:
A. this error never occurs if I manually end the task from within task manager or tskill, only when the program legitimately exits.
B. The first hex value always changes, but the second value, the memory being referenced, always stays the same.

I have a split Access 2013 "application program?. This application program has a Front-end part that exists on each terminal within the network. The back-end part (the data) lives on the File server with Windows Server 2012. The front-end and back-ends are connected to each other with cat6 cable. This works great. OK so my computer is acting up. Two weeks ago while browsing suddenly i get error messages concerning dns failed something probe. Ever since, when i open a new link it takes almost 20-30 seconds to open the page...
When i want to view a new video on youtube, it takes alot of time concidering i have 75/75 up/down
Its not the download speed, once i get a connection it works fast, but still not as normal.
Also now ive started getting sound stuttering/lag in the video.
Today even the mouse curser lags behind the movement of my mouse and then quickly squirms around the screen catching up all the movement i did.
Does this have something to do with my SSD starting to fail?
Is there some virus hijacking my resources?
Are my drivers bad?

Answer:Stuttering, performance issues, internett connection issues

Hello and Welcome ..

Does this have something to do with my SSD starting to fail?
Is there some virus hijacking my resources?
Are my drivers bad?

We can try to briefly check these with the following methods, or use stronger programs if required..

Please download Rkill (courtesy of to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. This gives a preliminary reading, and clears your Antivirus/Antimalware programs.
You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe):
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash for a minute or so, and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until you run the next few tools.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with Rkill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

I am writing this because I am seeking help with an Email related issue.

I am trying to use a program that retrieves Inbound Email attachments and resends them to a new destination… it is a dispatch program.

The Help Files associated with this program make reference to “The Attachment Folder” from “My Email Program”.

I am currently using Microsoft Outlook 2000 as my Email program although… I also have Outlook Express as an optional email program that I could use.

I would prefer to stay with Outlook 2000 though…
“if possible”.

I am enclosing an excerpt from the “Help” File associated with this program so you can see their exact reference to an “Attachment Folder from my Email Program”.

I have tried contacting The Program Manufacturers Tech. Support but as yet have not heard back from them.

I am looking for any advice or direction to be able to Locate and Identify this “Attachments Folder” in “my Email Program” that they make reference to.

If you can assist or advise me in any way I would appreciate it very much, as I am completely lost as to what to do next.

My Operating System is Windows 98SE.

Thank You

Hello,I am looking for a program capable of redirecting ALL current internet speed only to one application, ensuring it works possibly as good as it should. So far I only found programmes meant to limit the applications speed, which is theoreticaly the opposite of what I am looking for.I would LOVE you guys to reply to me with ANY ideas because I am trying to fix a problem that none have yet solved. If you want to read more about the problem, head here and maybe you could help me to solve it, if not, staying here will be appreciated too. Thanks and best regards,

Answer:A program for maximising internet priority to only one selected application

You could use almost any firewall product to accomplish this. Even Windows Firewall should allow for this type of management. If you turned on the limitation for the entire PC and then permitted the one application for full access, wouldn't that accomplish what you are trying to do?

please help, i know very little about computers

Try this fix: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Press Start (the Windows icon on the bottom right), type regedit and press enter. Press Continue when the UAC thing pops up. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes, find the .cfg key and delete it. This will reset it so when you open any cfg file it will ask you which program you want to open it with. I tried using Auslogics Boostspeed trial version,
It's actually pretty cool 'cause it scans and shows how many junks files, registry errors, fragmented and disk errors there is, plus status if it's critical or whatsoever.
But since it's only a trial version, I can't fix/repair all of the errors.
the last time i checked showed that my computer doesn't have disk error but have other issues that need to be fixed. So i was wondering if there's such a program or i can manually check and fix stuff like this. Thanks in advance and have a nice day people^^

Answer:Is there a program/application(free) to scan and fix disk errors?

Windows has a built in disk checker. You can access it by right clicking on your drive and choosing "properties", then "tools" then "error-checking".

You can also run it from a command prompt.

You can also download disk utilities from your drive manufacturer's web site.

I am running windows xp pro.

Just before xmas, I purchased a new video card, a EVGA 8800gt. Shortly after I noticed that things would lock up on weird screens. For example, in TF2, Quake Wars, BF2142 it locks up when it searches for servers or when I try to refresh a server list. Playing quake wars in a single player game plays flawlessly. World of warcraft currently does and has always worked flawlessly.

Steam locks up quite a bit, just the normal interface. I installed Saga Beta 2 a couple days ago and had no issues until tonight when I tried to play. I hit the login screen and before I can even type anything, it does a loop of playing music for 3 seconds then nothing for 2 seconds. I can put my password in to log in, but everything is super slow... characters show up in the box about 1 every 3 seconds, then it slowly tries to log in etc..

I uninstalled and re-installed the latest version of my Audigy 4 sound drivers. I am running the latest versions of the Nvidia graphics drivers. I have run RAM checkers and switched out and around ram modules so that unless a bunch of my modules have problems, I am assuming it is not ram. I plugged my computer directly into the internet to go around my router, just in case it was my router, but the same things occured.

If anyone has any suggestions, or things I could try to gather more information on what might be causing my problems, I would be happy to try them. Right now the only game that seems to work is WoW.

Hi everybody

I am trying to run a scientific application under Win XP (NAMD which needs an input configuration ASCII file, but everytime I try to run the programm in CommandPrompt I got the following application error "Configuration file not accesible".
It is not a question of paths as I am well familiar with this issue, also the ASCII file is editable with Wordpad with no issues, I have full user RW rights on the disk and I would like to mention that I have run this software before without any issues on another Win XP stations.
I have discussed this issue with NAMD developers but they didn't find a solution. They also think it is OS-related and mentioned possible issues like application RW rights (?) and file caching which I am not very familiar with.

Hoping for some clues !
Many thanks and all the best

Can you open the ASCII file in Notepad? Wordpad doesn't always save as plain text.

Is this coz my access was cut off or is it some setting in messenger?

My computer runs very slow and will not run some applications. I have tried scanning with Ewido, Lavasoft, Spybot and they all crash when running. IE crashes when running Windows Update. When I try to delete all the files in "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp" Explorer crashes. I have run sfc /scannow and tried a repair reinstall and that did not work. I had Norton, but removed and that would crash when scanning as well.

Answer:XP Pro application crashing issues

I think you should perform a clean reinstall of windows (with full format the driver when prompted), then try Kaspersky AV 6 to scan for viruses.

You have scanned throughly for malware with at least two different packages. Ran diagnostic, memory and system board if Lenovo has it for download. Upgrading to a different version only makes a mess of things if there is malware.

Is there a program out there that keeps record a database of its own on NTFS security permissions? Recently in quick bandage we had to move our fileserver files (containing all departmental folders, a globally accessible folder, and a folder accessible only to each division) to another server... entirely losing NTFS permissions in the process

It would be handy to have a program that would have kept a 'profile' of what NTFS permissions are supposed to be for any folder touched beyond defaults), and just point this program at the new location and have it go through doing the hard work and re-apply several hundred unique permissions).

Answer:Program that keeps own record of NTFS security permissions for mass re-application?

I'm not sure I've ever seen a program that does what you're looking for, but then again I've never looked.... I do know that you can use powershell to export permissions, set permissions and with just a few lines of script, copy them (see the get-acl and set-acl commandlets). You should be able to export the results of get-acl for later reuse or analysis if you wish too...

Aside from that, maybe more important... Next time you need to copy files and want to retain the permissions, use robocopy. (Native command in 2008 and later, previous to that you had to get it from the resource kit...) It will allow you to copy all the files and directories and keep all their permissions, timestamps, etc... The command line help is extensive, and there are a lot of options... Read the help and let me know if you have any questions...

Windows refuses to change the version application called upon with default program.

I have 2 versions of 3ds max (2010 and 2015) on my system. I need both for different utilities (some that work in 2010 do not work in 2015, and vice versa).

I tried to change the default left click open program to 3ds max 2015.

However, Windows refuses to acknowledge this and insists on using 3ds Max 2010's 3dsmax.exe instead.

I am using the correct path to the launcher in the 2015 version's folder, I made sure of this at least 15 times.

I have gone through regedit tutorials, even downloaded a utility called openwithview, and tried working with the UI interface for 'open with' for hours but to no avail. Why is windows so insistent on using 3dsmax.exe from the 2010 version even when explicitly told to use the 2015 version? What is causing it to fight so hard with me? How can I change this behavior?

I have a Y700-34ISH Desktop (ideacentre) - Type 90DF00B2MW, and the "Driver and Installation Application" program is installed. When I clicked on the driver menu it showed a bunch of items, which I went ahead and installed. It asked me to restart the PC, but after I did the items are still showing.
1. What is happening?
2. What are the benefits of this program?
3. Is it ok to uninstall it if I don't want those benefits?
EDIT: It seems like this program "updated" several drivers to older versions. At least that happened with Geforce, and I also had to reassign my headset as the preferred output in the sound settings.
Confusing stuff like this doesn't make one happy after spending $1500 on a new PC.
Mod's Edit: System model added to the front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.

Please help if you can!After my son used my computer I noticed two problems which scare me and indicate (I think) a virus problem. First: after typing a Google query, I click onto the desired link and find myself redirected to other search engines which also performed the same search I had just requested from Google.Second: I downloaded the free Ad-awareAE program onto my desktop, but when I clicked on the icon to install it, i got the message "AD-Aware.exe is not a valid Win32 application"Based on some internet searches I made, it seems these are symptoms of virus activity and I am petrified to do any online banking. I was able to download Avest Antivirus and found 4 trojan viruses on my pc. It eliminated them but the two problems still persist. Please help! Thank you, thank you, thank you!{EDIT Moved from XP to Am I Infected~~~boopme}

I am connected to two internet connections. One using the Lan card, the other using the wireless. considering Lan connection as the high speed connection, I want to keep it for downloads. The problem is that when I downloading at max speed, my browsing goes extremely slow. Is there any possibility in windows Xp or any third party software that can make it possible for me to keep my browsing on my wireless connection internet and the downloading at Lan card connection simultaneously.

Answer:Assign internet connection to a particular application

Cmon guys, I'm sure there would be a solution to it...Seems like a very common scenario to me, where one would like to maximize the use of his connections.
Hoping for a solution

I live on a university campus and have access to multiple ISP's. Over the college network, there is a great internal file sharing service which utilizes DC++. The problem is when I am transferring files over DC++, I cannot game and my college connection is fairly unresponsive.

I would like to setup my PC to use isolate DC++ to use only the wireless college network, while all other programs (games, browsers, etc) use the ISP which I subscribe to. This way I can still have a fast conneciton for gaming while still sharing files over the college network.

Does anyone know if this is possible to achieve (either natively within windows xp, or using some sort third-part app?)

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Possible to restrict application to single connection?

Remove the default gateway for your campus connection and add a persistent route statement to route traffic to your campus network address range over your college connection.

Traffic for your college goes ovr the college connection, everything else goes over whichever other network connection has an active default gateway.

I have several computers and 2 of them have shown these symptoms
all of my computers runs on win 7 ultimate 64 bit sp1
having only avast antivirus
first encounter is on the office computer about 3 weeks ago
office computer is always on, 24/7
all is well until someday it cannot connect to any website on my chrome nor ff, also cannot open any new application, task manager, cmd, windows explorer all won't open, mouse just showing busy
but any established connection is not interrupted, teamviewer that is already connect to a computer is still fine, but can't connect to new computer, mysql browser is still fine, but can't make new instance connection, but, is not able to send/receive new messages
it seems only establishing new connection or opening new application is not able
can't shut down or restart, so i forcibly restart using pc button
the problem keeps occuring
even after i uninstall latest applications, not opening most of the application i usually open to try which application is the problem
but it keeps happening like 10 minutes after restart, sometimes hours, sometimes as fast as 5 minutes
so i reinstall the win7, not reformatting the drive
and everything is still fine on the office computer until now
but 3 weeks later, today
my home computer got the exact same problem
i haven't done anything
but i'm pretty sure it is the same problem
have anyone ever encounter this problem?
antivirus scan has shown no virus

I've got an application that installs with a default license key (a .lic) file, but despite my user account being an administration account, Windows 7 says access denied in installing this file. I can drag the .lic file into the folder and Windows 7 will pop up a notification saying I need administrative permission to do this but allows me to "Continue" "Skip" or "Cancel"

I press "Continue" and the .lic file is dropped into the folder with no other problems.

I've also enabled the actual Windows 7 Administrator account that is disabled by default, and tried dropping the .lic file into the folder and it drops in just fine.

Why would MS make one user account that's an Administrator, not a true Administrator despite being in the same user groups and supposedly having the same permissions?...

Answer:Windows 7 and application installation issues.

Have you tried right clicking the program and selecting "Run as Administrator" yet?

I am desperate for some help. This has been an on and off problem with our computers for a while now, but for some reason yesterday and today, I can barely keep our Medisoft program running for more than five minutes at a time. We have two computers running XP Professional that also run a medical software called Medisoft off of a server. We get this sporadic problem of the software "hanging" intermittently. It will work fine for months, and then bam... non-stop. It is a huge pain. I've brought it up to our tech guy (who is also the one who set up our network and software) and he's tried some things but ultimately does not know what's going on and has not been able to fix it.Here is a screenshot of the error log: If someone could give me any advice, it would be soappreciated! Thanks, skylyreI'm realizing how bad that image looks... here's the direct link: they both look bad, sorry I will just copy paste if anyone thinks they can help!

Answer:Application hang and network issues

<<I've brought it up to our tech guy (who is also the one who set up our network and software) and he's tried some things but ultimately does not know what's going on and has not been able to fix it.>>

Well...what things have been tried?

Generally...a problem with a single program can probably best be attacked as corruption or the need for updating to the program, IMO.

Has anyone checked Event Viewer logs for possible clues?

You may want to look at the data available at, but those errors look pretty generic to me. Error&phase=1

Hi there, I bought my T430 Thinkpad in September 2013. It contains an i7-3520M and a Nvidia 5400M graphics card. I am aware that this is a business line notebook, not necessarily designed to handle high loads on GPU and/or CPU for a longer period. However... I noticed quite strong heating on the left side of the notebook a while ago. It begins basically instantly after using any 3D application, no matter how challenging for the hardware. Within the first minute temperatures reach 90°C on the GPU and 80-85°C on both CPU cores. There's no performance issues in processing these applications. I can run certain games in medium graphics on full resolution and there won't be performance drops (it will constantly stay above 50 fps). When i start the same games in the lowest possible settings and on 800x600 the temperature difference is only about 3°C. For example... take the original Unreal Tournament. Not that I'm playing it anymore, but just to show you how severe the problem is. Lowest settings, 800x600, game from 1999. Temperatures after 1 minute: 81°C and 78°C on the CPU cores, 87°C on the GPU. Also the Hard Disc gets above 50°C because of the heat inside the notebook. To be clear: i7-3520M and GeForce 5400M can handle a lot more sophisticated 3D tasks with satisfactory performance. So what's the reason for these heat issues when I barely use the dedicated graphics card at all? I'm not expecting to get gaming-notebook performance here. But it'd be very... Read more
