Laptop won't start after screen issue

Question: Laptop won't start after screen issue

I was using my laptop yesterday afternoon, when the screen began to fail. I turned the laptop off because it had froze, and when I tried to turn it back on, it just continuously reboots and shuts off, and the screen will not come on.

I have tried plugging in an external screen, but it does not receive a signal from the laptop, nor will the external keyboard I have to use (laptop keyboard is broken, not important).

Is there any way I can get the laptop to work again without taking it to a repair shop, or does a certain part need to be replaced?

Preferred Solution: Laptop won't start after screen issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Laptop won't start after screen issue

It could be one of several issues and from the sounds of it, would require a part replacement. Possibly the video card, but my best guess would be motherboard failure. I really wouldn't be able to tell for sure without further testing.

I've been talking with anyone & everyone since last week - I just spent an hour on the phone and still have no idea what is going on with my service issue.  This is after my hour and 20 minutes earlier today, the hour yesterday and the 3 hours on Friday.  Our laptop had an error message regarding a bad usb port straight out of the box.  I was told to send it to service.  On Thursday I was told that they were waiting for a part.  They finally got the part on Friday and they said I'd probably get the laptop on Monday, or at the latest Tuesday.  They did make me aware that it could take 5-7 days.  By the way, the 24 hour depot service upgrade just means they'll get the box to you in 24 hours - not that your computer will be fixed in 24 hours.  It actually took me over an hour to get in touch with someone at Lenovo who was able to send me a copy of what the ThinkPlus service upgrade covers.  I couldn't find it on the website and I went through numerous people and was told that they don't have anything like that before I was able to locate someone who could get me that info - and he was in sales and very much rushed me off the phone when he figured out I just had a question and wasn't planning on purchasing anything else. It's now Tuesday but I get a different answer each time I call: 1) the techs haven't entered the status, 2) their new system isn't up and running 3) the computer is not repairable and ... Answer:New laptop with USB issue at 1st start up has turned into customer service issue

you did not detail what you were trying to hook up via the USB port. If you simply fired up your computer and itdisplayed this error, did you even try connecting anything to the usb ? a mouse, a camera, a external floppy or a hard drive, even one of the thumb drives. In my past use and getting error messages, it was due to setup in the bios was turned off for usb, or the cord I had was faulty, or the device was simply bad. Another issue one time was that the files that load up XP usb were bad, and reinstalling or repair did the job. good luck.

Hello, So I have a user that just recently started to have an issue.  The laptop is fine (beyond the sound issues with the X230 which aren't solved (sound issue)), but if the user puts the laptop in the docking station with the laptop lid/screen closed/down, the external monitor only displays the desktop background but no login screen or desktop icons. This user has Windows 7 Pro. on it, I just installed the latest video driver from Lenovo's site and that didn't help.  I made sure the screens were set to clone and not extended displays. When the user flips up the laptop screen/lid, both screens are cloned and all is fine.  Supposedly this just started to happen a few days ago. But if the user has the laptop turned off, puts it in the docking station, closes the lid and turns the laptop on, the external monitor works just fine. I've changed clone to extended desktop just to see if that would help any but it didn't.  Set her back to cloned displays. Only other thing I can think of doing is to make sure the external monitor's resolution is set right but...don't understand what's going on.... Thoughts?

Answer:x230 (2320) laptop issue with external monitor when laptop lid/screen is up

Hi, cftech

My first recommendation would be to make sure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are the latest version. Since the external monitor works, just only certain circumstances, this is most likely a software issue of some sort. The BIOS can be found here and the chipset here.

Also, if possible, could you have the user try to connect to the external monitor without the docking station? I'm just curious if the docking station could have something to do with the issue,

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Answer:start up issue with laptop

Your laptop is trying to boot from a network connection before it boots from your hard drive. Open your BIOS and move the LAN boot option below the hard drive in your boot order list.

Question: Start Screen issue

I have been running Win 8 for a week or so.

Today an update was downloaded and I chose to 'update and restart'.

When the PC rebooted after the update, there were only 4 tiles on the Start screen - Desktop, IE, Explorer and Store. ALL the other tiles (those created at install time as well as those added by subsequently installed apps) have gone.

Has anyone any ideas why this may have happened?

Do you have any third party start menu kind of apps installed?

Hi...I have searched for two days on your website and had no luck. I have an HP laptop:

Model G61 429WM
Windows 7 OS
BIOS Version: F.13
Processor Type: AMD Sempron M120
Processor Speed: 2100 MHz
Total Memory: 3072 MB

Only thing I can do is hit ESC when HP logo appears. It takes me to a start up menu...I done an F2, System Diagnostics, and ran tests:

Start-up test..it failed and short DST failed.
Run-In test...fail and short DST failed.
Hard disk 1 test failed
Memory test passed

When I exit the System Diagnostics it goes to a black screen and I have to restart...hit ESC on HP screen again to get to start menu again...I hit F11 for system recovery...a screen came up saying "windows is loading file" A new screen comes up saying windows is loading and the winpdows logo appears...it then goes to a blue screen, it isn't a solid blue screen, it goes from light blue at the top to a dark blue at the bottom...it looks like sun rays coming down from the top. The cursor is a big white arrow and I can move it but that's all except restart and to back to start menu. If I don't hit the ESC button it just goes to a black screen and if I hit the enter button to continue start up it goes to a black screen also.

It's been a while since this problem occurred. I haven't had time to try work on it but it seems like the last thing I did on it was to download some pictures from my digital camera.

I don't know what to do. Can someone please help me? It w... Read more

Help!My R60 was working perfectly till yesterday. Today I switch it on and while the machine sounds as if its starting up, the screen remains dead. When connecetd to an a-c source, the ac indicator, battery indicator & power on indicator all glow green. Removing and reattching the battery, removing power source does not seem to fix the problem- meaning screen continous to be blank.I tried Fn plus F7, Fn etc but screen is dead. Upon inserting a cd, the machine reads it but again screen is dead from the beginning - no arrow, fluctuation etc.Any advice offered would be greatly appreciated.Thankss

Answer:Laptop screen blank & laptop ceases to start up

Have you tried shining a flash light on the screen for a minute to see if it displays even a dark picture? If so, then the flouresent bulb that lights up the screen, is dead and the screen needs to be replaced. If you see nothing, could still mean the screen is dead, or the connection from the screen's cord to the connecter on the motherboard, is loose or not making a good connection.

Hi all.

I have a concern I might have done something to my laptop...

I recently installed and ran a Uniblue program called PowerSuite, which supposedly makes tweaks and updates to speed up my computer. After completing the process I was prompted to restart. I clicked the prompt, the laptop shutdown, but cannot start anymore.

One issue I did notice during the process was that, whilst the program was updating drivers, I received a warning of an attempt to install a driver with security issues. I opted not to install as recommended (could it be that the original driver was removed before I prevented the installation of e new one?). Also, during the restart process, I noticed a notification I hadn't seen before regarding an intel network process being disabled. (Could it be the intel driver that is the problem?).

When I try to start my laptop, I receive a glimpse of the BSOD, followed by a black screen giving me two options: start normally (which does not work), or start in repair mode. The repair mode runs, but finishes advising that the system cannot be repaired.
I am currently attempting a system restore which does not appear to be working (been running for several hours). I have made a separate post to try and resolve that issue.

Any advice out there?

Thanks in advance.

SJ.

Answer:Laptop won't start - Suspected driver issue...

Hello SJ and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you able to start your machine in Safe Mode? If yes you may be able to undo the Uniblue "tweaks" by using system restore and return your machine to a date/time prior to using the utility.

Safe Mode

System Restore

If you have no previous restore points or if it doesn't work, you could try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) also from Safe Mode. If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If still no joy, one of the Forum experts prepared these troubleshooting guides. They're time consuming but they've helped many.

I'm running Windows 8.1. Today, the scrollbar arrows in Internet Explorer 11 and some of the navigation icons on the Start screen appeared as rectangles instead of arrows or the proper icons. Searching online, I came across this post, which matches shows the same problem and details a fix that involves replacing the Segoe UI font. I've done this, and the icons are now back, with one exception. The small arrow in a circle that appears at the bottom left of the Start screen and allows you to access All Programs is still appearing as a rectangle. It functions fine, but it's really annoying! Can anyone suggest a way to fix this?

Answer:Icons on start screen display issue

I ran System Restore and restored to a time before some updates were installed yesterday, and all is now well. Things were fine this morning after the updates last night, so by trial and error, I've traced the problem to Bitstream Font Navigator. If I run it and use it to add or remove any fonts from my system (which I did this morning), then the icons go messed up again, and I have to use System Restore again. At least I know what caused it, now!

Two questions about Windows 8.1:

1) When the computer starts up, the first screen displayed is a ?blocked screen?, an image, from which I proceed by pressing the space bar.
What?s the purpose of this step (other than delaying the start up process)? I don?t really grasp that, nor find it in the manual.

2) I need to set up several users for the computer, some with a password and some without one.
In previous versions of Windows the start up process first showed all of them, then I clicked on one and the process continued (asking for a password or not depending on who it was), and that was all.
Now, with W-8.1, two issues here: First, it seems to require that all users have passwords. And second, it first shows only one of the users (not always the same); I have to click on an arrow on the left to see them all (another delaying, useless step ?).
How can I set it up so as to have the quicker start up process of the previous versions, that is:
- that it skip the blocked screen step (unless it is really useful - my 1st question);
- that the first screen displayed show all the users;
- that some users may not require a password.

Thanks for any help.
ACA

Answer:Issue with blocked screen and users at start up

Well you'll save yourself a lot of grief if you'll install Classic Shell, that will bring back your start menu, turn off all the hot corners and allow you to boot to your desktop. To skip the lock screen takes a gpedit if your units are not running pro you won't have a Group Editor to edit with. There is probably a Registry edit to stop the lock screen.
With do not display the lock screen, you will boot right to logon screen user name and password. the straight to the desktop. I haven't looked at them tiles and other Metro crap in months.

This helps you with the first part of your questions, and may solve the 2nd part. I don't know the answer. I do think you could look through the group policy for a setting, though I have never looked for this!!

Windows 7, AMD 1100t Thuban Cpu , 8 GB Ram, Asus Extreme Crosshair motherboard, Dual Radeon 5850 GPU's, 1200 watt power supply. The CPU and one of the graphics cards is water cooled.

I have been using my custom built computer for about a year and a half now with no real problems but recently I have been moving it around quite a bit. The problem is that this last time I was setting it up it booted to the motherboard logo and then froze. I tried to get to the bios or any ware else but it would not do anything. I restarted it but this time the logo screen did not even show. With my motherboard beeps once to show that my components are working properly and this is one of the reasons I am confused because it does. I checked my hard drive to see if it spins up and from what I can hear it is working. I noticed that when it is booting up some labeled lights flash then go away but now the one labeled boot stays on. My Cpu always ran around 41 c and topped around 48 c so I don't think overheating could be the problem. If you have any ideas or suggestions they would be much appreciated!

1. New apps from the Windows Store, and also new x86 software programs are not being pinned once they have installed. I have to manually pin them from the All Apps screen.

2. When I right click a modern app on the Start Screen and press 'Uninstall', the app doesn't actually uninstall. I have to then go and do the same thing from the All Apps screen to uninstall the app.

Surely this isn't normal behaviour?

I think it is. New apps by default in 8.1 are not pinned to the start. They go to all apps and you can choose what you want to pin to start. Also, it seems that apps is the preferred place to uninstall metro apps.

Have Dell Latitude D400 Laptop which is several years old. For many months, had minor problem where LCD screen would have partial garbled horizontal lines, but when I shifted the screen angle -- moved screen on hinges -- back and forth slightly, then screen would be fine. But recently, the bottom 70% of the screen has turned to olive green mush with a few other vertical lines, where as the top 30% of the screen is fine. When I connect external monitor to rear jack, I am able to see all the graphics there and the hardware and software otherwise performing. When run built-in diagnostics, get graphics error with no external monitor, but all tests just fine when ext monitor connected. Conclusion from on line chat with Dell Tech was LCD Screen problem and referred me to the toll free SALES phone number -- meaning just purchase another one.

How do I know if the problem is the LCD screen being shot, or possibly just needing to clean or repair the connection through the hinges from the CPU/graphics card to the screen itself? If the latter, who should I seek to do such a repair or can I get guidance to open the unit and try myself as I am technically comfortable doing so with instruction? And given the cost of new laptops today, if I need to go outside for repairs, where should I look and up to what cost do you think is worth it, vs just abandon and purchase a new one.

Answer:Laptop LCD screen or screen connection issue

Could be a bad connection or the LCD might be shot. I would take it apart and at least poke around if it is no longer under warranty. Dell has some pretty good service manuals on their site. I think yours is here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd400/en/index.htm#online_documentation

If you don't find anything obvious wrong with it, you can most likely get a screen off FleaBay for a few bucks and try it out.

Or just get some huge hinges and mod a 50" plasma screen on it...

Good luck!

Hello, I have an old T500 laptop which has been working perfectly for 3-4 years. Recently I encountered an issue where the screen would go blank right after showing the Bios Screen and the windows startup message (using Win 7). I thought it was an OS issue, so tried using USB linux (Elementary OS) and it would work fine for a while then screen would go black again. I just reinstalled with Win 10, same problem - works fine for a while, then goes blank. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it, but prior to this I noticed the laptop getting quite hot in the top left region (where I think the CPU and GPU cooling exhaust is), not sure if it has anything to do with it. After browsing around the forums, I selected OFF switcheable graphics, and selected Discreet graphics - the screen goes black right away, had issues even showing bios. Reset bios blindly (F1, F9, F10) and then set graphics to integrated and disabled OS detection. *Seems* to be working fine for now, but wondering what the issue is and how to resolve.

It's been a month, you've probably solved this by now, but it will no doubt happen to someone else at some point.

Hi
At my current company we have an issues after windows updates occur. All of these are HP machines, sporadically some machines fail to boot to windows, stay stuck at the windows logo screen or they get start up repair issue sometimes this goes in to the.

The temp fix we found is to press F8 > Last know good config.
Then we log in and do bios update / firmware update. This fix lasts for a while, then after windows updates or without update the same problem occurs including that machines that have had the BIOS/firmware updates. What we have done is run the BIOS
update again even though its the same BIOS update installed previosly as there are no more new updates avaiable. This again temporarily fixes this.
Any idea on how to resolve this without us doing BIOS update etc.

There is no way to fix it the issue is whether it is serious enough to require that HP replace the screen. There is a "pixel policy" that governs the terms of the warranty. You need to contact HP Warranty Support to see if you can get a new screen.

What happens, beginning from startup, is that the laptop screen works completely normal, shows the usual lenovo loading screen, then once it reaches the point where is is supposed to show the desktop background(where you sign in.) It changes to a dim black. My external screen is black as well as though it was extending the screen. I can click, then sign in, and access all of my files after I change the setting to second screen only, but I would like to be able to use the laptop screen as well. If anybody could help that would be great.

when i unplug my ac adapter from the wall before i unplug it from my lappy the screen stays bright, which isnt bad. but when i plug it in(wall first then lappy) it goes dim, like its in power saving mode. now how i usually fix this is i recreate the problem by unplugging it from the wall then turning the comp off, then unplug it from the comp while plugging it back into the wall, turn the comp on then plugging it back in. but it usually takes me a couple tries to get it back to normal again. ive turned off my power saving features and ive just had the computer screen replaced about 2 weeks ago. its always done this and i know it happens when i unplug it from the wall first; which if im in a hurry i dont think about it untill its to late.

its not that big of a problem but i would love to know how to fix it faster or maybe disable any features that could cause this.

Hello,

For the past few days sometimes when I open my laptop I get a grey screen with horizontal streaks (sometimes black with horizontal streaks) running across the screen. If I close the screen and re-open it eventually it will go back to normal. I've also had the screen freeze a few times for a few seconds while I'm using it.

I've hooked it up to my TV when it had the grey screen and it was working fine so I'm pretty sure it's the laptop screen. This doesn't happen all the time so if the solution is get a new screen I'll just live with it, but perhaps something simpler?

Answer:Laptop screen issue

My first guess would be the video card or driver but if you hook it to an external monitor and it is OK then it does point to the Laptop screen. Sometimes the ribbon cable from the Motherboard to the monitor can get loose or damaged. Not saying that is what it is tho.

I've had a HP dv6 laptop for close to a year now and have had zero issues up until the last week. I've noticed when watching videos in fullscreen for even a short period of time the contrast for the screen goes right up up when the video is exited, basically if I watch something and then minimise it whatever is behind it is almost unreadable, such as the standard chrome bar up top looks almost one solid, bright colour, after 5 to 10 seconds its back to how it should look.
It's also a LED display
Anybody have a similar situation or know what the problem could be?

Thanks
Andy

Depending on what program you use for watching videos it may just be bugging up, but also it may be that the program is infected in some way. Have you tried a virus scan?

Hi. I've had this laptop, a Dell Inspirion 1200, for a few weeks now. I usually either close the cover or put it into Hibernation when I'm done using it. I haven't jarred it, shocked it, or stepped on it.

Basically, I opened up the cover and hit power. While it was booting up, I looked away to do something, and when I looked back, the screen was covered in white vertical lines. I shut down the computer by holding down the power button, then rebooted. When it came up again, it was perfectly fine (no lines at all.)

Is this a fluke or something I should worry about in the future?

Answer:HP Laptop screen issue

Not really it is a hardware issue rather than software I suspect. You could try ebay to get yourself a new screen cheaper and install it yourself. Usually screens are about 50 - 150 depending on the one you need. However some home insurance may cover you for the costs but remember the rise in the premium before you do claim.

My computer used to boot very quickly (less than 20 seconds to desktop, I'm on an SSD), but at some point recently it started pausing at a black screen with the cursor in the middle for about 40 seconds before getting to the logon screen. I ran Xbootmgr and it shows that PlugPlay start is taking 40029ms, during which time Xperfview shows that there is no disk or CPU activity.

This is the line from the xperf XML from a boot trace that is worrying me:

Code:
<serviceTransition name="PlugPlay" group="PlugPlay" transition="start"
totalTransitionTimeDelta="40048" firstCheckpointTimeDelta="18" processingTimeDelta="40029"
container="DcomLaunch svchost (956)" startedAt="5644" firstCheckpointedAt="5663" endedAt="45693"/>
I've attached the full XML file below.

Any help identifying what's actually causing the issue?

Answer:Boot pauses on black screen with cursor, possible PlugPlay Start issue

Right after a start run this in cmd:

Code:
tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe"
and see what comes up, post a screenshot perhaps

Also check event viewer for any abnormal hangs.

Try removing the Ethernet cable and start. Also try restarting in Safe Mode (with and without networking).
Try a clean startup too - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

I have no errors in the error log after booting (other than a long gap before "Plug and Play service" reports that it entered the running state), booting with all USB devices unplugged doesn't help, nor does booting in safe mode (with or without networking) or doing a clean startup.

Let's try looking at these reports:
1)  Please provide this information (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/
2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

Peering at the screen, you can tell it's displaying. Sadly, it's only bright enough to see for a brief moment.

I'm running into the D-Sub on the TV and have the CRT/LCD setting to display on both the laptop monitor and the TV. TV is a clear picture and the laptop I'm guessing from reading I've been doing is lacking the backlight.

History: No updates have been done in the timeframe that the monitor issues surfaced. No drivers changed, no programs installed (except vaguely possibly ExamDiff and one or two portable apps (http://portableapps.com/).

A week or two ago, I noticed the screen seemed to be shadowed in one area but the shadow seemed to go away if you brightened the screen all the way. Also, the screen seemed to be flickering, like lightbulbs sometimes do before blowing, that really quick, irritating flickering. This didn't usually last long, maybe 30 seconds at the most and it would settle down, ditto the shadowing.

Now, if I switch between CRT/LCD options or press then release the little screen switch near the hinge (the one that turns off the monitor if you close the lid), I tend to get a very quick proper display on the laptop monitor before it goes dark again with the displayed information impossible to read.

The issue is the same through a hibernate and resume, brief flashes of a clear screen and then only the vague outline can be seen.

There are 100s of tutorials out there. It is more scary (if you've never done it before) than hard. https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=replacing+ccfl+backlight

I generally recommend replacing both the inverter and CCFL while you have it torn apart.

Finally, out admin was able to change it to 30 min, but even though it says 30 minutes the timeout varies from 10 min to 30 min. All my other, using the same win 10 build function fine.

I have a 600m Dell Inspiron laptop. One of the hinges of the laptop screen seems to be broken so whenever i adjust the screen the monitor just falls and closes the laptop. Although it is incovenient the laptop works perfectly. i was wondering if a) this could later on affect the laptop and mess up my screen and b) if anyone knew whether Dell warranty would fix this for me or am I held responsibles (even though i have not dropped the computer to cause this to happen).

Thanks for any suggestions!

The screen on my laptop is moving to the right of the screen and I can't access the left side of the screen. When I drag it across to the left it flies back to the right. The desktop is fine, this only happens when I am in an application e.g. hotmail, facebook, etc. The cat walked across the keyboard so I'm not sure if some of the keys pressed have created this issue.

Hi All

Does anyone have any experience of an Advent Laptop working fine, but
when you shut Windows Vista down, shortly after the screen goes blank,
the screen switches back on to a bright white?

The laptop is not on, but the screen is.... obviously this drains the battery.

Apparently some wine was spilt towards the QWERTY side of the keyboard

Any ideas?

Hi,
I have a Windows 8 Laptop and every few days my laptop screen appears to have spotlights shining down from the top of the screen. If I disable / enable the graphics card in device manager they vanish for a few hours. The image attached shows the display issue (found on google) but the lights are shining upward on the image - in my case the lights shine down from the top.Can anyone please tell me what is causing this and the fix. Thanks,John

Answer:Windows 8 Laptop Screen Issue

It is called "Flashlighting".  Common with LCD screens, that are lit by CFL lighting.

My laptop screen has developed a vertical grey band about 10cm wide which starts very light but as I leave the laptop switched on gets increasingly dark and when dark I can see effectively a shadow of a previous image on the screen, making it very difficult to read. I'm concerned that it may not simply be a screen replacement issue as there seems some comment that it may be a connector cable issue.  Any ideas?

Hi guys, sorry for posting another blue screen thread when there is one right below mind but I read over and the problem was completely different so here it is.

I have a Dell laptop (Inspiron b130) and recently (yesterday) I installed Pantex camera driver. Today when I turned on my computer, it brings me to a Safe Mode
When I select Safe Mode and continue, I get Blue screen.
The Blue screen says:
"Check for viruses on you computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer."

I've been restarting my laptop about 50 times now, I still get same message over and over.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I was using the laptop (a Dell XPS M1730 with XP x64) fine yesterday, no issues, all working as it should. Then turned it off and tried to boot an hour later. It will not start..

The disc activity indicator flashes once or twice, but stops after a few seconds. The case lights come on, and so do lights on gaming peripherals attached by USB. But the screen stays black. No splash screen at all..

What does this indicate, anyone know? It's not the screen per se, as I can see there's no disc activity after the first few seconds. If the disc had died, or the M/B, I would still get a splash screen, wouldn't I? (Maybe not with a M/B failure??). If the CMOS battery needs replacing, I thought I'd get an option to carry on booting with the F1 key for a while.

I am abroad with very few tools to deal with this (no O/S disc here with me for example). Just wondered if anyone knows what the lack of splash/boot screens would indicate?

Thanks.

Sometimes when I'm turning on my laptop, the screen comes up wonky--the pixels are odd colours and there are lines running across the screen. I'll turn the laptop off and then back on and it will happen again and again, with different patterns on the screen. If I let it set there, the screen fades somewhat to black, but it doesn't go to my start up screen.

My brother, who has a laptop identical to mine, said that it's happened to his laptop once, but this has been happening with me for a month or two now. It wasn't too bad until recently (well, today, really) when it took me about five or ten minutes this morning to get the computer to start up. It doesn't normally happen a lot, and I used to think that it was because I didn't shut the lid on my laptop after I shut it down--but should that even matter?

I have a HP G60 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32-bit with roughly a 17 inch screen.

I don't know if it's a virus or a Vista problem or if I should go to Best Buy and let the Geek Squad take a look at it, but I thought I'd try here first.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum!

Thanks,
Kristeen

I have a CF-50 Tough book with Windows XP. When I start the computer it will go to a blue screen after I logged on and have been on the computer for a couple minutes. Then the duration of time on the computer and going to a blue screen gets shorter. The computer then automatically starts back up and tries to reboot. The last time it did this the computer did a disk check and it came back as ok. I can hear the hard drive running on start up but not always after that.

I am not sure if this is a hard drive problem or a virus or some something else. It also started this after I used the computer at work and they have a free wifi in the building. Any help would would be appreciated.

Try cycling through the monitor select function on your keyboard.  The laptop monitor select function is for non, external and both.   To do a power reset, unplug your laptop, remove the battery and hold the power switch down for 30 seconds.

My computer was working fine the last time I successfully used it, which was about 24hrs ago. Today, I opened the laptop, and when the screen turned on, it was solid white.  Tried CTRL+ALT+DEL, Windows key, etc but computer did not respond.  Had to hold down power button to restart -- screen went straight to white when it turned back on.  Tried to get to Safe Mode by restarting again and pressing F8, no luck.  Tried letting the computer just sit with the white screen, nothing happened. I honestly have no idea what could have caused this.  No error messages, no recent updates or installations, etc.Any suggestions?

Hello friends. This morning I woke up to find that my HP laptop, which I'd left on during the night, had suddenly stopped working. I held in the power button for a while and nothing happened. I unplugged the power source, removed the battery, then put them both back. That didn't change anything either. I've tried holding the power button down a few times. That hasn't helped anything either. I've got it as far as this: the indicator light on the caps lock is blinking. The wifi key (F12) is orange, instead of its usual white. The screen doesn't turn on. I'm not hearing the internal fan ratchet up, which would tell me that the hard drive is working while the screen is not. I've left it sit for a while like this, and I'm not sure what to do with it. I really don't want to send it in to a laptop repair place because, even though I've had it for years, I love it to pieces and want to keep using it. Edit: I tried a hard reset, but it didn't work.

Answer:Black Screen On Start-Up - Laptop

Ashley,

I have to take off to go to an onsite job however here are a couple of items to look for before I leave. Please keep in mind that this can be so many different things with the information you have provided. (Did you really utilize the word smorning? ) You must be from Chicago area. I grew up with that word.

1. Do the lights come on when you push the power button both on battery and plugged in without the battery in?

2. If the lights do come on, does it sound like the computer is booting into Windows? Do you get the sound of windows starting (unless of course you have more than one user or you have to click on your username before you can sign in and it will just go to the sign on screen and will not make any noise)

3. Do you have a monitor to hook up to the laptop? Turn the laptop off, hook the monitor up to it, turn the laptop back on. You may have to push the output buttons to get it to come onto the screen. This would be FN and (look at your F keys. You will have either CRT/LCD or a horribly designed picture of what is supposed to be a monitor, usually F4, F5, F7 or F8 depending on what kind of computer you have)

4. If it outputs to the monitor screen but not your Laptops LCD screen, turn off the laptop, unhook the monitor, turn the laptop back on and really look at the screen from an angle. See if you can just barely see a picture in the screen. If this is the case, you have a bad inverter in the latop. They are between $89.00 - $189.00 depending on your comp... Read more

I seem to have broken my laptop. I was trying to hook it up to a tv with an HDMI cable. Following the advice on a website I went to "Adjust screen resolution" to try and find the tv as another device and enable that. However there was no other device, so I decided to play around a bit to see if I could get something to , this was my mistake. On one of the drop down menus under the resolution menu I managed to select something which created a second device in the box showing how many displays you have. I was pretty sure it wasn't the tv but thought I'd keep playing around and on one of the other drop down menus I selected something like "expand across both displays"...said soemthing like that, and then that's when the laptop went blank, still a backlight coming from it but nothing but black on screen. I restarted the laptop, the screen showed up the windows starting stuff then the desktop flickered on for barely a second then it went back to blank screen. I can only guess I've created an imaginary device with obviously no display and this is what it is showing now when it's blank.
Hope this makes sense to someone else, not sure it does to me, I really shouldn't mess about with technology.
With some advice from someone else I tried toggling with the fn f buttons, f5 was the only thing that did anything but it just toggles from a light black to a dark black, as it would be if it were turned off. I have tried starting it in safe mode but it doesn't give me the... Read more

I bought this laptop back in September-ish of 2014. It runs perfectly fine still and always has but the image on my screen has been a problem since probably December of 2014. I know that seems ridiculous for me to just now be bringing it up but I honestly dont use it that often and only for pleasure so I always put it off and forgot about it.

The screen basically flickers blue in certain spots. Corners of windows, icons, links, etc. Its almost as if it was highlighted... I am not sure what it is. Sometimes it randomly goes away but then comes back within a few days.

If i do a screen grab of the blue flickering it doesnt appear in the jpg. So i took a picture with my cell phone. I uploaded that pic as well as my system specs to this thread.

Anyone please help lol....Bestbuy within 10 minutes told me it would cost me $200 for a new screen without even doing anything besides comestically looking at the screen and laptop. HP has been beyond awful in their "support"

This is the second time I've bought a new laptop in 2 weeks, because my old Dell's hard drive crashed.  The first replacement HP wouldn't connect to Wifi and Geek Squad couldn't help from the store, so just traded out for this new one, and that problem is solved.  I'm not sure if my Win 10 is 32 bit or 64 bit, BTW, and don't know if it matters for this issue.  I was on my laptop last night and the keyboard kept acting wonky--slow response and I'd have to hit a key a few times to get the letter/number to type at times.  Also, even though I hit the numlock key, it wouldn't stay locked.  Please tell me this is a quick driver reset.  I really don't want to go back to Best Buy again.

i just got a new laptop with a 17 inch screen, if i pull up a web site with allot of typed wording (not graphics) i can sometimes see faint green or red almost like a shadow of some of the wording. but if i go to a solid screen it is not there.. so i am almost sure its not dead pixels. anyone else ever experience this?

edit
did some searching on the web and found the term to be color bleeding?

Hello, so I have this problem with my laptop screen, My laptop is a Dell XPS 15 and not even a month old. While I was reading an article online, I thought I heard a ding sound like what it makes when it asks me for administrative permission for a program to open or do certain functions and then the right upper corner and part of the right side of my screen dimmed. As if there is a shadow over it. When my laptop asks for administrative permission it generally does dim everything but the dialogue box that opens up but never have I ever seen it dim only a section of the screen and a window never opened asking me for permission for anything.

I tried resetting my computer and it changed nothing, I also tried changing my screen's brightness and the dimmed section does get brighter with the rest of my screen but it still stays a few shades darker than the rest of the screen. I do have a warranty that would cover any repairs and fixing that needs to be done but I am hoping it is something that can be easily fixed by myself because sending it in to be looked at, repaired and then returned could take a while and I obviously don't want to waste the time if somebody knows an easy fix to this. Thanks

Answer:Laptop screen issue, dimmed in corner

Try booting into Safe Mode. Since that uses a generic display driver and runs minimal software I think if you get the same dimmed part of the screen you can be pretty confident that you want to get warranty service.

New laptop, booted for 1 and a half hours, now has a green line down the screen.

The retailer wants a screen shot by email before they will even issue an RMA No and agree to accept the laptop. I took a screenie with HypersnapDX but the green line doesn't show up.

They suggested a cell phone with bluetooth / usb - but the laptop doesn't have bluetooth and the cell doesn't come with a compatible cable.

Do I have any options here - software wise to enable me to grab a pic of the green line ?

hi, i have an old compaq laptop running windows vista. just yesterday i was using it and i had to reboot it.. well when it booted back up and i signed in to my administrator acct..the screen turned to a solid yellow color. i can't see anything else on the screen besides the yellow. but when i sign into my kids acct, i can see the screen just fine. before all this happened, i was trying to uninstall the program called INTERNET DOWNLOAD MANAGER, which apparently had a bad key. i was trying to follow a youtube tutorial on removing the key from the .REG, and afterwards, i started having this problem. what could be causing this and how do i fix it.

Answer:yellow screen issue on compaq laptop

I'd try doing a system restore to see if that fixes it. Sounds like an issue with the registry entries you changed.

Just as the title states, my new bought laptop is extremely weird. I am currently having 2 issues, and yes I've searched already(even though its hard to search when this is so confusing)
1. Whenever sound is played on the laptop, WITH and WITHOUT HEADPHONES/MIC plugged in, the left side laptop speaker lets out a static sound for a while, and if a sound on the laptop ends, it ends after like 3-5 seconds.
2. The buggiest issue I am having, is my computer refusing to be the "actual" screen. What I mean by this is that if I screen capture my desktop, the lower maybe 1/6th of the bottom and the right side is cut off, the resolution being weird.
I.E If i stream, and capture a window, and my mouse is in the middle ON MY SCREEN, the stream will show my mouse cursor to the right and a bit below of where it should be in the middle.

Please help me, as I've already tried my laptop brand's customer service GIGABYTE, and Reddit, but to no avail, and GIGABYTE takes forever for them to respond to tickets, and all they ask for is if i installed anything, etc when I got the laptop, when the issue was from the beginning.

What I have tried:
Disable/Enabling NVIDIA/INTEL HD graphics cards
System Reformat
Updating drivers
Change resolution

Thank you for your time, and I pray that someone has a solution for me... this is extremely annoying

Answer:Hard to explain issue with Laptop and screen

Hi there

If you have tried a system format the chances are almost 100% hardware related.
You will have to take it back to the seller for inspection.

The will either repair the laptop or credit you.

Hello, please help.

I have a laptop Dell Studio connected to Hitachi HDTV. The problem is that since at least 2 weeks ago when I connect the TV as a projector I am not being able to use the full recommended resolution wich is 1920x1080 because it won't fit my TV screen as it used to do.

Can you help figure out what is the exact problem now?

Answer:Laptop to TV output screen resolution issue

Hey all, I'm having a dilemma.

TLDR: my new Acer Aspire E 15 laptop has a messed up screen, should I get a refund and either finance a MacBook or find a used MacBook, or try to repair the Acer?

In mid march I bought a new laptop - an Acer Aspire E 15 from Amazon. A couple weeks ago I opened it and there was a big black spot on the screen with white lines coming from it. The laptop hadn't been dropped or even moved, I don't know what caused it. But reviews on amazon said other people had the same problem a month or two after buying the laptop.

I contacted amazon and they said I can return it for a refund. I contacted the seller and they said I could send it to them for repair. However, I use my laptop for work and couldn't go that long without it for them to fix it. When I contacted Acer about the warranty, they said that since the black spot is "finger shaped" (??) it's not covered under warranty. But it is so large that it's a real problem when trying to work, or even just generally use it.

So now I have to decide whether to get it repaired or get a refund and buy a new laptop. I'm leaning toward the latter. I really want a MacBook and was approved for financing from Apple.
However, my friend made the point that computers are kind of like cars in that they depreciate in value after you buy them. So is it really worth getting a new MacBook and financing it? Or should I look into getting a used one for cheaper? If I get a us... Read more

Answer:Y50-70 acess BIOS,Black Screen on start up,Win 10 1607 update & GeForce driver issue

Hello MaidenThanks for using the Lenovo forums. If the screen is black, then that would likely indicate an issue with the display instead of any software on the unit.

Have you tried to use any external monitor at all?

I would recommend, that you call your local Lenovo support line for a possible service. Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.==================================================================================Did someone help you today? Thank them with a Kudo! If you find a post helpful and it answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution"!

To isolate the problem, try/borrow a monitor with an USB connection. Try all the USB ports.

The error points to your Intel video drivers as where the error occurred (not necessarily the cause of the error) by pointing to the igdkmd32.sys file.Try booting into Safe Mode by pressing F8 immediately when the Windows screens first appear. Or, you can launch Startup Repair by following these instructions: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/e...2f3f351033.mspx

Hi I have an Hp ENVY m6 and I am having the same issue. I ran the test and everything seemed to pass.P.S this problem only started occurring after the Windows 10 1607 (Anniversary) update.

Answer:Re: Laptop won't start, freezes at HP loading screen

Hi @Jaysonic,  Thank you for your query. I will do my best to help. I grasp that on startup your notebook freezes on the HP logo with the loading circle. This only occurred after installing the Windows 10 anniversary update. What is your precise model of Envy M6?  If you start in safe mode with networking do you have the same issue? HP PCs - Windows Safe Mode (Windows 10, 8). If you can get into safe mode, please run the troubleshooter?  You can also run the HP Support Assistant  to aid with any HP updates. You can also try turning off the fast startup option. How to Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10. If the issue remains here is a link to HP Notebook PCs - Computer Does Not Start (Windows 10). Been struggling to get my niece's laptops up and running. Windows 7 on a Toshiba satellite L655-S5150. Both laptops do the same thing at start up...freeze at a black screen with a blinking cursor. I have tried the following:

windows 7 system repair disk...no errors found
Kapersky repair disk...does not seem to load at times but did get it to load fully once in graphical mode and a few viruses were found but some could not be healed, or whatever they called it
AVG and Bit something or other were also tried...
I have booted via a CD and a USB stick but still in the end when I try to boot the windows 7 system it hangs on the black screen

Thinking of purchasing the Toshiba HDD drive utility or whatever it is called...$39... in laws don't have any disks that came with these laptops...windows 7 home premium version
help???

Thanks....dan

Hi all Had this problem off and on for a few months. My laptop was incredibly slow for a long while, becoming increasingly difficult to use all the time. Until it got to the stage now where it won't even turn on. Turning it on goes one of two ways:  - Sometimes it will turn on but go to system diagnostics. I do the hard drive check (the quick one as the full one doesn't appear to be an optin for ) and it always says its fine. I usually jstexit the menu them and it starts up- Sometimes (like now) it turns on, shows the hp screen, the windows icon, and then a black screen. The thinking circle icon (sorry, don't know what the name is!) might stay on, the cursor is there sometimes...  so maybe it is just starting very very slowly... but its been about 20 minutes already... I have done a hard reset countless times (Battey out and hold down the power button) but it doesn't so anything. There are somethings that i would at least liek to try and get off it before i give up on it entirely! I've had it  for maybe 2/3 years.. hoped it would last longer but if its gone it's gone.  Any advice appreciated - thanks in advance. K

Problem
- I booted my laptop yesterday however it only came out with a black screen with a mouse pointer, no loading or anything that you usually see on startup. I forced shut down my laptop and turn it back on and everything went back to normal. However this happened again earlier today so I consulted my friend about this and he told me it was a computer virus where the virus activates on startup, and told me to go to this website for help.

OS
- Windows 8.1

Things I have tried
- "SFC /Scannow" CMD command - Came out with no integrity Violations

- MCafee virus scan - Did not do anything

(I am sorry for my bad english, it is not my first language)
