Can't type in fields below the url pane - Explorer 8

Question: Can't type in fields below the url pane - Explorer 8

I'm not sure what to do here...

After downloading Explorer 8 (and updating Windows) I am unable to type in any field below the top pane. (I can type text just fine in my google search field and the url field)

I un-installed Explorer 8 (which re-installed Explorer 7) with no improvement.

I noticed that after completing the Windows update (I have Service Pack 3) my Anti Virus (Zone Alarm) had been blown away. I had to re-install it. I've since learned that I should disable anti-virus software prior to doing Windows updates.

Is this a virus?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Can't type in fields below the url pane - Explorer 8

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Answer:Windows Explorer: Navigation Pane and Preview Pane Bug

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

https://explorerplusplus.com/

It's portable and runs without installation.

Let us know if navigation pane works using Explorer++

Is it possible to have no Nav Pane when opening a Desktop folder, but have Nav Pane when opening Win Explorer? Like it was in WinXp/Win98/Win95?
When I disable Nav Pane, it disappears for Desktop folders and Windows Explorer.

I think the answer was 'no' for Win7.

I installed Classic Start Menu hoping one of it's features could do it. If it does, I've not been able to enable it. Other than that, Classic Start Menu is a super improvement.

You all take care,

Hi there i have a bit of a PC issue that i am looking into.

When using internet explorer and a site for example ebay. It will only let me populate the Username Field, But when i try enter the password the field doesn't allow any data to be entered. This happens for other programs outwith Internet Explorer too.

The OS is Windows XP

What would cause this to happen?

Thanks

Answer:Unable to Type in some fields

Press Tab instead of enter when you want to move to a password or other field in a form. Pressing enter pretty much means that all fields are complete (like pressing "Send" or "Submit" yourself).

i have created a form in word, adn i want it to be read only for most of the form. However, i do want certain fields to allow users to type in. Is there any way that i can easily do this. i know that this may seem kind of vague, let me know if you need any other info.

Answer:MS Word; only type in certain fields

[edit]
Too bad there's not a strikethrough text format. Anyway, ignore the stuff in red.

This is a common question that has no easy answer. There is no way to permanently lock the text of a document while leaving the fields open. There are some workarounds, such as using a background graphic instead of body text.

I don't know what I was thinking about when I wrote that, but it wasn't forms. It might have been converting a PDF document to a protected Word form. Another of Dreamboat's articles.
[/edit]

If you search the forums for something like Word form protect text, you might get some hits. The question gets worded differently from time to time, so play around with the search criteria until you get a thread that works for you.

Here are a couple of similar threads (searching word form lock text):

http://forums.techguy.org/t389564

And here's a link with some general info. Thanks to Dreamboat for that.

Sorry.

One of our office computers won't allow the user to type in the search fields or log in fields within IE on any website. Can't search on Google, Yahoo, can't log in on hotmail or other online applications that we use at work. In addition to this issue; when I open Control Panel I get a script error, the icons on Add/Remove Programs are very small with no description of what the icons represent and if I try to udate Windows it tells me that it needs to install addiotional files to update the system but it gets locked into a loop where it installs then tells me that it needs to install the same files. I can't run a Panda scan because it asks for my e-mail address and I can't type into the field. When trying to run a Kaspersky online scan it won't update the new virus definitions which is an automatic action. When I try to run HouseCall it tells me that there is another HouseCall running and closes the prgram. There is no indication in Task Manager of two HouseCalls running. Ewido found some problems corrected them but didn't fix my problem. Replaced the mouse and did a restart so those won't work. The computer was running fine one evening and when we came in the next day it was acting this way.

AVG, AdAware run clean. I downloaded a trail Kaspersky Security program and it ran clean as well. Suggestions are welcomed.

One of our office computers won't allow the user to type into a search or log in field in IE. The mouse is not the issue, we changed it out, because we can click on links and click into the address bar. Ran AVG as well as AdAware both clean. When I tried to run HouseCall it tells me there is already a HouseCall running and shuts down. I can't run Panda because it asks for my e-mail address and I can't type into the field.

I am running Vista Premium SP1 on a Dell Inspiron E1505. I have a new problem where I can not enter any text in any browser field, IE or FireFox. The text field appears but I can not click on the field and enter text. I have tracked the problem to a corrupt or imcompatible dll called mshtmled.dll located in c:\windows\system32 folder.

How do I extract and install this dll with any of it's related dll's in Vista?

Answer:Suddenly can't type into form fields

Problem partially solved. Still have no clue as to why I could not type into form fields, even logons, google ... but a simple re-boot and now I can enter text into form fields. However, sporadically I lose control of positioning - sometimes the arrows stop working, and sometimes I cannot change position in the form by moving the cursor. What is going on?
Thanks for looking in. seekinganswers

Using Windows 7 I suddenly can't type in fields of secure documents (opened with https). I have tried documents such as for paying bills and making reports, using IE, Firefox, and Chrome. Applies to data entry fields or radio buttons. Data fields accept the click to select the field, but do not respond to data typed on the keyboard.

I have searched the web for "can't type in fields of secure documents". I get lots of hits, but none are appropriate and few have solutions anyway.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

Answer:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

I upgraded my laptop to Win 8.1 a few days ago and everything seemed to be working fine. I ran into an issue today using the desktop version of IE 11 where I can type text into the address bar but if I select a field on a web page, I am not able to type text into it. I normally use FireFox as my browser and it works fine (as does Chrome). If I bring up the Metro version of IE 11, I can enter text fine.

Anybody got any ideas how to fix this? It's not a big deal since I rarely use IE but it bugs me now that I know about it. I just checked on a netbook I upgraded and don't see the issue there.

New machine Feb 2013 used exclusively in laptop mode. Has been great overall but right out of the box I could not type text into any form fields using Internet Explorer 10. What an intro to Windows 8! Discovered I can type text in notepad, then copy and paste it into fields but cannot enter it directly. This was happening with the factory installed software so if it's a third party app conflict it's one that's original equipment. Thankfully Chrome works fine, but sometimes I need to use MSIE and am quickly reminded why I can't. Google and Lenovo forums are mum on this subject. Some suggestions pointed to SFC /scannow, which came up with a litany of things it couldn't fix. Enhanced protected mode in MSIE also did not help. Didn't appear possible to reinstall MSIE (where's the DOJ when you need them?) What's next? Thank you all for your assistance.

Answer:Yoga 13 MSIE10 can't type into text fields

hi dserdu,

Welcome to the Forums.

Are you having this issue on the desktop version of I.E. or the Metro version?
 - if the issue only happens on the metro IE, try to open the Desktop I.E. > press ALT+T > choose Internet options. On the Internet Options, go to the Programs Tab, set I.E. to Always and check the box "Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop"

- Link to picture

Alternatively, if the issue is compatibility between the website and the I.E. versions, you can run I.E. 10 in compatibility mode or on a lower version (i.e. I.E. 9, I.E. 8., ...etc.). To do this:
1. Open the Desktop I.E. and press F12
2. On the developer tools, choose Browser Mode IE 10 and choose an I.E. version (i.e. IE 9)

- Link to picture

3. When dnoe, press F12 again and observe if you can now type into text fields.

Let me know your findings

Regards

Hello,

My 8 year old son decided to download some Malware onto my computer while I was deployed the last few months. Anyway Im running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and am having issues entering text into IE 11. I believe the issue stems from PUP.Optional.MindSpark.

Im pretty sure I removed MindSpark completely by using MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and CCleaner to get rid of it. I also have McAfee AntiVirus which didnt catch Mindspark.

So the problem now and when the PUP was on my computer is that I cannot enter text into text fields on IE 11. Right now Im using Google Chrome and am having no issues with it, but I would like to get the IE 11 problem fixed. Also as a note if I run IE 11 as an administrator it acts normal, but as soon as I close the browser and reopen it, it stops working again. A couple of things I have done that wound up with no results include: Restoring Internet options to default, turning off protected mode, and ran a Windows system performance scan. Also Ive made sure everything on my computer has the latest and greatest updates.

So hopefully somebody here can help me out.

Thanks!

Good afternoon:

At this time I am developing an access 2000 database, in which I need to make calculations with fields of the date type with the format of short hour.
For instance:
1. I intend to calculate in a third field the difference between 2 fields: final hour - initial hour ( 15:15-12:00=3:15);
2. Sum of working hours for a period (19:00+20:00=39:00).

I thank at once the released attention.

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

You know how, if you input data to IE and it remembers what you input? Then, when you start typing in next time it gives you a drop-down choice as it recognises what you have proviously typed? Sometimes you manage to input garbage and it just clutters up your drop-down choice: how can you get rid of it? Is it stored in the Registry somewhere?

Answer:Internet Explorer - input fields

This is basically just your history if you clear the history then all the choices go.

I am trying to create links to specific locations with each document between two documents. The document names will change. I can update the current name of the other document by creating a custom property called "otherDoc". I have solved most problems, however, I am unable to insert a field into the address of the link (to make the link dynamic) without utilizing the showfieldcodes command (which is very memory and time consuming since the documents I am working on are very large). Below is my code. I was wondering if there is any way to set the address as a field? Or somehow input an address and it would be understood by word to be field.
Sub link_to_other()

'pastes hyperlink to the other document
Selection.PasteSpecial Link:=True, DataType:=wdPasteHyperlink, Placement:= _
wdInLine, DisplayAsIcon:=False

'selects the hyperlink that was just inserted
Set myField = Selection.PreviousField

'creates variables
Dim temp_address As String
Dim temp_subaddress As String

'sets variables
temp_address = ActiveDocument.CustomDocumentProperties("otherDoc").Value & ".doc"
temp_subaddress = Selection.Range.Hyperlinks(1).SubAddress

'changes the hyperlink the the dynamic value
Set SCut = ActiveDocument.Hyperlinks.Add( _
Anchor:=Selection.Range, _
Address:=temp_address, SubAddress:=temp_subaddress)
End Sub

You know, I would really love a dual pane option for Explorer.Lots of times†(most times) when managing my files, I want a source window and a destination window to drag the files between.††It's such a bore having to open Explorer twice.† Especially when you can't just click the Windows Explorer icon on the new Task Bar†a second time, because that simply minimises the Explorer window you've just opened!Instead you have to right-click the icon and choose a different folder in the list.† The new Explorer window pops up over the first one, so then you have to drag the second window clear before you can use them.So now you have this silly sequence:††† left-click; right-click, move-the-mouse, left-click; left-click-and-dragPLEASE give us some way of handling this better.† Either:1/ An optional dual-pane view for Explorer (like Director Opus, et al, offers)2/ A single click way of opening two, non-overlapping Explorer windows (my preferred option)Is there any chance at all of this, do you think?

I have a problem with my explorer. On the left I see the folders but the right pane is completely blanc. And when I open the explorer, it can be shut down and explorer.exe uses 99% cpu.

The taskmanager is the only way to shut it down.

I've already scanned for viruses with my Norton Internet Security 2004 and did a online scan twice with McAfee and Trend Micro. But there are no viruses.

I've also scanned my computer for spyware twice with spybot and adaware and everything seems to be fine.

In the "save mode" it all works fine, but in the normal mode my right pane stays blanc.

Can somebody help me? It started suddenly yesterday....

Question: Explorer Task Pane

Hi,

At work we have Compaq D510 short forms with Windows XP Pro, SP3. One of my coworkers wants to be able to e-mail pictures from her 'My Pictures' folder by selecting the files and then clicking the 'email this file' in the Common Task Pane, when you do this Outlook Express comes up with the attached files but it won't send. It says it cant because of a socket error 11001 and that it cant find the SMTP server. I am thinking I need to reset the File properties in Tools>Folder Options >File types but I am not sure which one Explorer is invoking to Send Mail, I have looked in Google, no luck yet. My machine does this just fine but uses MS Outlook 2007 , which is why I think a File Type association is goofed up.

Thanks.

PS I have tried resetting the common task pain in My Computer >Properties.

Hi, Wish you all good tidings. Have been using Win7 nearly 6 months with a recent sp1 update. In the explorer pane (LEFT) , as you move thru the folders , and click the thumbnail on a particular folder it opens the contents of the said folders on the RIGHT pane.Let me say that a particular folder is SNAPPED (can I have the exact terms please ).
Ok I have snapped DIFX and am trying to expand Alwil software. Image-1

Alwil software expands as expected. Image-2.

Next I snap ALwil software -Image -3

I try to expand the folder of Alwil software. It disgustingly goes and sits at the bottom. -Image -4

It happens everytime and if folder has still more folders it is still irritating. I have to compress the folder and expand it again , and only then it goes to the top. I have seen this behavior in Win 7 premium editions too.

Answer:Explorer Pane behavior.

Try this. Go to Organize-.Folder and search options and uncheck Automatically expand to current folder.

Hi all,

I?m really in need of some help from some Access experts! I?m a newbie to Access, but I got myself busy with quite a big project... I?m trying to map out the product supply to shops in the whole country. I?ve come quite far for a starter, but I keep having 3 questions, it would be great if you could help me with this!

I have, amongst other tables, two tables called Stock_counted and Reported_quantity.

The table Stock_counted has the following fields:
- Shop_number
- Product_code
- Quantity_counted

The table Reported_quantity has the following fields:
- Shop_number
- Product_code
- Quantity_in
- Quantity_lost_or_returned
- Quantity_out

1. What I would like to do is to make it one table based on Shop_number AND Product_code. So in one record I would like to have Shop_number, Product_code, Quantity_in, Quantity_lost_or_returned, Quantity_out and Quantity_counted. How do I do this, making sure that the quantities end up behind the right product and shop? It is possible that some shops don?t have all items, while other shops might not have all products reported, or both. On top of that, I have another table with a price for each product, which needs to be related to it as well.

2. It happens that some products are found more than once in one specific shop and therefore appear more than once in the table, with the same shop number and product code. How do I automatically SUM these quantities, so that this product only shows up once per shop?

If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if Internet Explorer 5 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
NOTE: This command is case sensitive.

I have received an e-mail response from the creator of Windows Double Explorer / Windows Dual Pane Explorer (names seem to be interchangeable) . My apologies for not knowing the proper terms, but I hope anyone will be able to understand what I’m about to describe.

According to information provided by the creator of WDE / WDPE one uninstalls the program by doing the following:

Navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. There you should find a shortcut file (look for a file not a folder) named Windows Dual Pane Explorer. Select that shortcut file, options click and writedown the target path of the shortcut. Delete the shortcut. Navigate to the location the target path dictates. There you should find both a zipped and an unzipped folder of WDE / WDPE. Delete the folders and also any other shortcut files to WDE / WDPE that you may have created and you’re done.

Apparently WDE / WDPE is never actually installed. Instead WDE/WDPE initially downloads a folder named WDE Portable 0.3.7.0 zipped. When this download folder is launched it unzips another folder named WDE Portable 0.3.7.0 unzipped into the same directory. During the unzipping process a shortcut is created on the desktop that points back to the unzipped folder. Thusly WDE/WDPE never gets listed into Windows Control Panel’s Program Files & Features section. That’s why it can’t be uninstalled as one might ordinarily expe... Read more

Hi,

I just installed a fresh version of Win 7 Ultimate. I enclose a screenshot of how my Explorer window and folder pane looks like. I am not happy with it.

There are two top level items, Favorites and Desktop. When I was running the RC I did not have a desktop item, instead all the items sorting under Desktop in (the screenshot below) were on the same level as Favorites. There were Favorites and then a white space and then my Libraries and then a white space and then my Profile and then a white space and then Computer and then a white space and so on.

1) Can I get the spacing in between items back somehow?
2) Can I remove the Homegroup and the Network icons?
3) Can I move the computer item upwards in the sort order?

Thanks!

Hello Gridsystems,

Q1) You might see if using either one of these below may be able to adjust your navigation pane to how you like it for this.Navigation Pane - Show All Folders
Navigation Pane - Automatically expand to current folder
Q3) Yes, you can remove Homegroup and Network from the navigation pane.Network - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
Homegroup - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
Q4) Sorry, but you cannot move the groups themselves in the navigation pane.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The Navigation Pane in explorer is rather cluttered. I want to remove the "Libraries," "Homegroup," and "Network" entries, but I am not sure how. Preferably without registry editing, but its okay if thats what it entails.

Answer:Editing the Navigation pane in Explorer

What is your reason for wanting them gone? Each has a unique set of uses. The "Libraries" is an excellent tool for viewing and organizing pictures and music files.

Have you attempted to remove them?

Hi!

I got a problem with the sidebar in windows explorer. Sometimes when i open it the only things that shows is the favorites, libraries and homegroup titles but non of the folders or links that are supposed to be there.

It stays like that for a while and then its back to normal (but only if/when i open a new explorer window). Im able to access e.g. the libraries when its like this but it looks like its searching for them but cant find them.

Help is very much appriciated

Answer:Windows explorer navigation pane

It can take a while to load everything on various machines, depending on hardware and configuration.

If you don't want it to load all folders, ( which takes time);

Navigation Pane - Automatically expand to current folder[2]=File%20Folder%20Settings

there are other tutorials there on this and similar matters.

By the way, that window is known as the "Explorer Navigation Pane", "Sidebar" refers to something else.

I did a search, but I must not know the correct terms to use.

When I am using Windows Explorer I want it to STAY STILL!!!! What I am referring to is the Navigatin Pane, when I scroll the pane it has this really obnoxious setting where after about 1 second it snaps back to the position it was.

So I am still reading the folder names or moving my pointer to click on something and SNAP! everything moves.

I know I am dumb but can someone please tell me how to make the navigation pane stay where I just moved it?

Answer:Explorer Navigation Pane attributes

I think it may have something to do with your mouse setup.
What do you have? Make and model.
Scroll mouse, wireless, laser, ball, blue tooth?
Have you installed any special drivers for your particular model?

I can't enter the tags and all I have is the title of the mp3 showing. Something makes me think it has to do with the tag editor I used and maybe not though. I'm using Win7 Home premium. It seems like there is something in the registry blocking modification. I hate to lose all the mp3s that want let me edit.

I have checked full control of the files under my user name.

Answer:Can't edit mp3 tags in explorer pane

I don't know about the error dialog, but as far as I know, you can't modify the tag info with Explorer, regardless of which version of W7 is used. However, you should be able to edit it with some third party software. I know that Creative's MediaSource player can do this, so I'm sure that others can also. How those changes might appear in Explorer, I don't know.

Hello,

I've searched quite a lot on this subject but have not been able to find a solution.

In Win 8 Windows Explorer, the preview pane seems to be able to display previews of all file types I really use except the type I use most-- eml email files. Is it possible to get the preview pane to show a preview of an eml file?

In searching the web I ran across reference to an old app named PreviewConfig that I believe was written for Vista, but apparently it does not work in Win 8, although I have not tried it-- kind of fear messing something up.

I have noticed that if I simply manually edit an eml file's extension from eml to mht-- it will be displayed in the preview pane.

I have hundreds if not thousands of eml files saved to disk. I really don't want to change all of them to mht because that eliminates email functionality of the file. Meaning, I would not be able to double-click the file, open it and respond to or forward it as an email message.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Answer:Display eml in Explorer Preview Pane

just a thought ,why not do a bit of a split screen with windows explorer and your .eml default email program . might take a little longer to preview each email ,,i use it like this with windows live mail to view my saved emails. like in the attachment , if need it just install windows live mail ,and set it to default for .eml files

Hi, Usually repairing Internet Explorer fixes this issue.

Read the following, all the way down to the bottom!

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177

If you have XP, there is another method: Since XP comes with IE 6, the entry for IE does not show in Add/Remove Programs, and you cannot run the repair utility from there...so> try this:

Read about it first!http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

Start button>Run

Type in the run line this:[cmd] and hit Enter key once.

Type this next to the cursor in the black box:

sfc /scannow (one space after the c) and hit Enter key once again.

Let the System File Checker run, it will take awhile, then it will NOT give any messages...either it works, or it doesnt.

For other than XP, win2000, etc:

The IE Repair utility is available if you have upgraded Internet Explorer from the original installed version> take a look in Add/Remove Programs, and if you see this:

Microsoft Internet Explorer (someversion) and Internet Tools, just hit Add/Remove> we arent uninstalling anything, you will see 3 options then> hit "Repair this version of IE" and let the utility run to completion. You will see a message that tells you either it fixed something, or that you need to reinstall IE.

There are certain steps to reinstalling depending on what your version of Windows is> and if you have XP with SP2 or not.

Let us know what happens.

Hello everyone,

My fiance just got her first Windows 10 laptop recently, and the behaviour of Explorer is driving her nuts. The navigation pane on the left will not scroll horizontally (neither with a horizontal scrollbar nor auto-scrolling as it did in previous versions of Windows), or at least we can't find the right option to enable either:

This is pretty unusable as it is, so I'm hoping that someone can suggest something. She will switch to an alternate file manager (we've seen recommendations for Classic Shell and xplorer2) if necessary, but would prefer to stick with the Windows 10 file explorer if possible.

Thanks to everyone!

Answer:How to get horiz scrolling in Navigation Pane in Win 10 Explorer

linuxgarou said:

Welcome to TenForums @linuxgarou

One suggestion would be to hover the mouse over the dividing line between the navigation pane and the list of files (it's the right-hand edge of the navigation pane's vertical scroll bar). When the pointer becomes a double-headed arrow you can click-and-drag to make the navigation pane wider.

I have mine set to about twice the width of the one in your screenshot.

Edit: and so apparently does Ztrucker in the following post.

Hello Asdf123,

That's what the Favorites folder is for, but I suppose that you could create and use a Download Library instead to accomplish this. Good day to all,

I'm trying to fix a small annoyance of mine with Windows Explorer. I would like the "Computer" to be permanently expanded. Here are some images that will clarify what I am trying to accomplish. The 1st image is what my navigation pane currently looks like, the 2nd is what I would like for it to look like

I would also like to remove certain items in the Navigation pane that I don't use such as "Network" and/or "Control Panel" if possible. I have tried a program that was suggested in another post which was suggested by the user mickey megabyte and can be found [URL="[/URL] . However sadly, this program did not remove any of these unwanted items.

I wasn't certain which forum to post this question in so I went with General Discussion. As per my usual etiquette, if anyone can help me reach a solution I will update my post with a clear guideline on how to fix the problem so that future users won't have to ask the same question.

Thanks

With that key highlighted, click File (or Registry) > Export, name and save the key to the desktop.

With the .reg file on the desktop, Right click on it and rename it with a .txt extension

Now upload it here as an attachement so we can see what is there. There is a possible fix for this, but it may vary somewhat in Win2k

What my plan is, is to remove Desktop from the Navigation Pane maybe using a Registry Hack but I think if it did, it would remove the others too since they expand from Desktop. Hello
I do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more.
This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista.

I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")

I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above.

Does anyone have a solution? I'd rather not re-install Vista...

PS: The problem seemed to exists in W9x and ME too Windows Explorer-Left Pane Empty - Tech Support Guy Forums and has a fix from MS, to delete a part of the registry, but this does not work for Vista.

Thanks a lot in Advance,

Maybe this has been discussed before, but I'm noticing that the navigation pane in Windows Explorer doesn't automatically scroll left and right anymore in the latest builds. Nor is there a horizontal scroll bar on that pane, like there was on XP. So if you have folders that are nested more than four or five deep, the only way to see the deeper levels is to drag that pane wider.

This is happening in both 7048 and 7057. Are others seeing this? Is this a bug or are they changing the way horizontal scrolling works and it's just not finished?

Answer:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane Autoscroll

I couldn't say about the navigation pane as I always disable all the extra windows options for the explorer windows. As for the horizontal scroll - if I understand you correctly, that is still there but you have to scale the window horizontally until there is less than one tiles worth of space. Otherwise the icons just auto tile themselves.

I have no idea what I actually did but I know I accidentally altered the "Links" file in C:/(Users)/(MyUser)/Links. Ever since then my "Favorites" shortcuts in the navigation pane are completely empty. I cannot add new links either.

I have tried everything from the simple "restore favorite links" option to manually editing the registry value to be sure in included the "IsShortcut" entry. I have tried the techniques from several different threads on this very website. I have tried every single option from each one of these tutorials:

Favorites Empty in Navigation Pane - Fix
Favorites - Restore Default Favorite Links in Navigation Pane
User Folders - Restore Default Location
Default File Type Associations - Restore

Nothing has fixed the problem.

In addition to this all the sections in the navigation pane that used to independent (IE - Libraries, Computer, Network, ETC) are all now contained under the "Desktop" category. This is a recent issue and not nearly as maddening as the favorites issue I described above.

So priority one for me is to fix the favorites links. If anyone can shed some light on the situation I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane Problems

Hello brewersomething, and welcome to Seven Forums.

All of your default Favorites are there in the right pane when you have Favorites selected. It appears that you need to expand open Favorites in the navigation pane by clicking on the small white outlined triangle just to the left of Favorites.

It looks like you have your navigation pane set to "show all folders". Unchecking this option using the method in the tutorial below will have your navigation pane show in separate groups again.

Navigation Pane - Show All Folders

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

I noticed some threads on the same issue on 98 and me systems.

In the Windows Explorer Window the left pane is blank (gray, only the little cross to close the pane) when the folder view is selected. The search and history folder do work though.

Is there someone who can help me please?

Happy 2003,

Tsjompie

Does anyone know how to edit the details that appear at the bottom of the screen when you select a file? I'm not talking about the details that you can change when you select view but the one at the very bottom of the screen.
Thank you

Answer:Edit windows explorer details pane?

Try this:

Once installed, go to the details tab of a files properties, and you can edit them as you wish, which will also appear at the bottom of Windows Explorer.

I've tried everything but Homegroup keeps rearing it's ugly head in Explorer's nav pane.
I went in to Change PC settings and Network and Homegroup, but since a Homegroup doesn't exist there is no Leave Homegroup option.
I even did a registry tweek to remove it and double checked the Attributes setting and it is correct to hide Homegroup.

I restored a clean image, like I do ever so often, and after the initial restore Home Group is hidden.
But, after installing some Windows updates it show back up again.

Any ideas what is going on.
I don't want, don't need, and don't want to have anything to do with Homegroup.

James

Answer:Unable to FRemove Homegroup From Explorer Nav Pane

Since you don't have homegroup setup, therefore no option to leave the home group.
Open Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services
Then stop 2 services if they are running: HomeGroup Listener, HomeGroup Provider then double click on each and disable.

Homegroup should disappear from Nav Pane.

"Trying to live without "View as Web Page" in vista explorer ...
When viewing an .HTM in the right pane vista explorere says:
"SOME pictures been blocked te help prevent the sender from identifying your computer. Opne this item to view the picture."
Does that mean that SOME other pictures are not blocked?
Which are, which aren't?
Where is that documented.
Regards,
Coen

Answer:SOME pictures been blocked in vista explorer right pane

I think personally that it is a real explorer bug.
The explorer is depending from too many applications (ie, windows mail applications, etc...). Some people having the same problem solved it through Outlook???? So maybe some registry keys are shared for this particular case.
I remember having a lot of problems of this type in XP, that is why i decided not to use anymore the explorer which i substitute with freecommander.

Hi all,
This might be a really dumb question, but in Windows 7 (Home Premium, no 3rd-party modifications), is there an easy way to get the tree pane on the left of an Explorer window to update to the current folder location?

For instance, if I navigate through folders using the folder icons on the right and the address bar at the top, the tree pane on the left still only shows the roots of each of the system's drives. How can I get the tree pane to expand to show my current location, without having to drill down through the tree manually, one level at a time?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Getting tree pane in Explorer to update automatically?

it's quite simple, fortunately.

hit the 'Alt' button in windows explorer, this will make a menu bar appear - then press tools >> folder options

now tick the bottom box

i currently can not access the available Wi-Fi networks menu. when i attempt to open the available networks pane from either the taskbar, or the settings charm, explorer restarts. i receive no error. I think the problem originated a couple of days ago. on that day, i logged on and the resolution was wrong; Windows had just completed installing an update. since then, i've reinstalled the graphic, network, and audio drivers. i've also uninstalled the latest Windows updates, as well as try and use system restore to go back about a month. no results. the only thing telling is i get an error in safe mode that says "The instruction at 0x389fac1c referenced memory at 0x0000000. The memory could not be written." i recieve this error when i attempt to open the Network connections menu from the taskbar like usual.

does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this? i'm getting awful tired of re-installing Windows 8 over stupid crap. thanks.

Answer:Explorer Crash when Network Pane Opens

You might want to consider updating to 8.1 update1.

Or run this batch file which runs sfc & dism commands.
It might take 2 hours or so to finish.
Then reboot.

Repair.bat

After downloading it right click it & click Properties & Unblock it if necessary.
It might help fix things.
