Preferred Solution: Blank Screen, But Monitor Power Light Still On

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Blank Screen, But Monitor Power Light Still On

When the screen goes off do you hear the fans still running?

Make sure your monitor cable is tightly connected.

Start in safe mode (tap F8 when it first starts booting)

Does the screen stay on in safe mode?

I recently returned home to find my monitor completely blank. At first I thought it was just in standby but when I tried to activate it, nothing happened. I checked all cables, unhooked the monitor, restarted the computer. . . still nothing. It is not the computer because I have hooked in an older monitor that works. . . sadly this monitor is about 10 years old and still running fine. The flat panel vs17e is only about 3 years old. Anybody else have issues like this? Is this typical of the hp 17 flat screens? If so, it is sad to see quality reduced as technology increases. Any help would be appreciated.thanks

Answer:flat panel hp vs17e, monitor is blank but power light is on

Have you tried another cable? The vga cables do fail. Here is a link to the manual for your monitor model.Try pressing the second button from the bottom on the side of your monitor. That is the auto-adjust feature.Message Edited by erico on 01-30-2009 01:09 PM

Furthermore explain, This problem occured when I put my laptop into sleep mode, I tried to turn it on but it wouldn't work so I remove every power sources and my laptop shut down. The moment when I try to power it back on, nothing happened except the power button light up other than that nothing else light up.My HDD is not running and so is my fan..Am I recommended send my laptop back to service centre? Thanks

Answer:Y410P power button light up but blank screen

Can you please try to reset the BIOS -1) Take out battery and disconnect all power sources.2) Press Power button for upto a minute.3) Connect all power and battery.4) Start the system. If nothing happens, then shutdown again. Press the NOVO button on side of the laptop and let me know what happens? If nothing happens, then (if you are comfortable), open the laptop and remove the HDD. Power up the laptop and let me know what happens. You can also try removing the RAM, if you have 2 sticks, could be that one of them is faulty. Just try booting with either one.

Hi,

I?ve got a Toshiba Satellite A105 and I went away on holiday and the laptop was working fine. I?ve come back and the power light is on, I can hear the laptop making some noises but the screen remains blank. I?ve tried connecting another monitor to it to try and get the output that way but nothing seems to be working at all!

Has anybody got any ideas?

Cheers!

Answer:Satellite A105 - power light comes on but blank screen

Try this:

1) Remove the battery and disconnect the AC adaptor
2) Wait about 30min
3) Connect the battery and AC adaptor again
4) Try to power up the notebook again

If it will not help I don?t see any other solution as to contact the ASP in your country for a notebook check!

Good luck

I haven't done any modifications or upgrades to this desktop. I got a blue screen (didnt catch the message it threw). I went to turn it on and after I hit the power button the power light comes on, the fans spin for a few seconds, and then nothing else happens. No hard drive noise and a blank screen...but the power light is still on. I tested the power adapter and it's throwing our 22.5 V. Please help :/

Machine was working normally, no recent additions or changes. Windows 10 installed about 1 year ago. Turned on the computer & had a blank screen, not black, no display at all. Power light & hard drive led lit and the fan worked. Wireless keyboard did not display lights for caps lock or num lock. Read that motherboard was most likely issue so I replaced it with a new one of the exact part #. Now the keyboard lights work & the display comes to life but it just flashes red, green, blue, white, black for a time then goes blank. I also then replaced the video card with the same results. I went through the troubleshooting docs from HP trying to reset BIOS but no luck. Any help???

Hi,  Yesterday I came home and was about to use my T410 like I sometimes do. I turned it on, the computer loaded the ThinkPad screen and then quickly showed me a "Fan Error" in the top left corner. I took the computer apart and saw that the fan wasn't moving like it should. I tried to clean it without taking it apart any further but that didn't work so I took the fan out and cleaned it. It is now spinning smoothly again. However, after putting it back together, when I turn it on the power you can hear the laptop turn on but the screen stays black and there are no lights flashing on the monitor. My question is, why is my monitor not turning on?  Side note: While taking out the fan I swiped my finger on the thermal paste, I'm going to re-apply some thermal paste between the heat sink and the cpu later today (any suggestions on how I should clean the old thermal paste?)

Answer:T410 - Black screen, power on, no light on monitor

Hallo and welcome to the forum You should remove any old thermal grease and apply new thermal grease before you turn the computer on. The Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) has instructions on how much thermal grease you should apply. To clean the cpu in my notebook before applying new thermal grease i have been using isopropyl alcohol in the past.

Computer Info:
Compaq Presario Series 0204 (about 5 years old)
240 Volt Power Supply (I think)
Integrated Video Card
2 Hard Drives

Alright here is a tough one for all of you...

Just recently got a new computer. I remove the C: drive from old one and attached to new computer, so that I could transfer all my mp3 files (over 6 GB). That worked fine. Now the problem comes when I put the C: drive back into the old computer. I connected the C: drive back up, but when I turned on it on this is a list of things that happened:
1.Power LED light displays as ON (Green).
2.Hard Drive Activity LED light display shows no activity at all.
3.Moniter LED light displays green for a half second, then turns yellow. It also does not display anything, not even BIOS (blank screen)

I have tried many things to try to fix this problem. Most of which were suggested by a Computer Tech who thought that the computer might be confused on which hard drive has windows on it:
1. Removed the 2nd drive, set the C: to a "Single/Master"
2. Disconnected all devices except for C: Drive
3. Tried differant Moniters
4. Tried to Force power by turning on and off Monitor

The Computer Tech advice worked one time, but after turning it off; it has yet to work again even after repeatively trying to duplicate the steps over and over again.

This computer has to be ready in only a couple days, please even if you've just stumbled across this post, leave a suggestion!

With motherboard removed and power supply connected, monitor connected, ram in, CPU in, HD connected and Case Power Connector for front Push-Button "connected" the system acts like it's going to start but nothing shows up on the display and screen shows No Signal.
However, if I unplug the Case Power Connector for Push-button from the motherboard and start the system by shorting the two power pins on the motherboard ....then the system starts normally and the display works.
Does this indicate that I have a bad power connector, bad power button?  How do I solve this problem?  The power button is white when it does not start up.

Answer:Dell INSPIRON 620 Blank screen, Monitor No Signal, Power Button white

The power on switch is a replaceable assembly.  Which one depends on Mini Tower or Slim Desktop 620S.

alright, I just got this inspiron 6000 from my sister that didnt work. she said nothing would happen at all. well it turned out the power light would go on, caps lock light blink for a few seconds and it would turn off. somehow the memory wasnt in the slot very well. bam, got it working, dumped all her pics and crap to a external hdd, and wanted to wipe it all out and start over. she is sending me a xp disc, but for now I just figured Id go back to 2k cuz I have that disc and when I get the disc go back to xp.

anyways, I couldnt figure out how to format the drive, because obviously xp was running off of it. anyways, I kept trying all the del - f2 - f8 - f12 to get a dos prompt before windos would load but I couldnt. so I figured Id just put the 2k disc in because I thought I remember that it formats it right before it installs. but it asked me where to install and the disk was partitioned and I wanted one drive letter so I cancelled the install, before it was actually installing though, said f3 to quit and I hit f3. now when I try to power it up, the power light comes on, the hdd light comes on for maybe 1-2 seconds max, then the cd drive light comes on and it spins up, then stops, and the screen just stays black, never did anything either. just black the whole time.

I cant use a floppy to try anything because no floppy drive. I tried starting up with the win2k disc in but doesnt work. I searched on my desktop running win2k and it showed a tutorial for making a usb flas... Read more

Answer:Windows XP, power light, hdd light for 1 sec, black screen

oh, also, i did try and search and most I found were a black screen after the self test or the windows logo, not right away.

also, dont think it matters, but when the lights go out, it is at the point where hitting the power button again, the computer instantly turns off.

also, just checked, and its nothing to do with the lcd. I just hooked up my monitor, and my monitor tells me when there is no signal, and it just stayed black, then when it was unplugged from the laptop that is when it said no signal.

HELP PLEASE!!I am trying to figure out what is wrong with a friends computer. The computer, which was purchased on HSN and says "Systemax Ascent" and runs windows ME, was running properly about 2 weeks ago and when he attempted to boot up again, it had no picture on the monitor, just a blank screen with the green power light blinking. I thought maybe it was the monitor so I brought it to my house and tried it on my monitor which works but it did the same thing. I also noticed that his CD Rom drive doesn't work either which he says was also working before. I took the CD drive out of mine and put it in his and it works fine. Does someone know what could have caused these 2 problems and what I can do to get them both working? Thank you so much for any help you can give me.Tina

Here are the symptoms when I boot up:
·The blue light on the front of the tower won’t turn on (it always used to).
·There is no beep or beeps at start-up.
·Everything seems to come to power. The CPU, the fans, the hard drive, etc…
·The hard drive, a few seconds after booting, gives one audible click, as if something inside was moving into place, but then everything sounds fine. I don’t know if that click has always been there or not.
·The monitor stays off (the power light is orange) and is black.
·With the power cord plugged in, the green LED power light on the motherboard is lit.

Here is the backstory:
·It all started when I went to boot my computer after adding RAM. After t he motherboard splash screen, it went to the black screen that said “Disk Boot Error”
·I unplugged cables and re-sat the RAM, and then everything worked fine.
·Over the next couple weeks I got the Disk Boot Error a couple more times, each time fixed like the last time.
·When I awoke his morning, my computer had obviously restarted itself because it was on the Disk Boot Error screen. This time, nothing I have done has fixed it.
·Now, my computer won’t get that far. I get nothing on the monitor. The monitor doesn’t even power up.

Here are some possible causes:
·The very night my problems started, I added 2gb of RAM (two 1gb strips) that are compatible with my motherboard.
·Today, when looking around inside my computer wi... Read more

A couple weeks ago I was using fruity loops program and all of the sudden my screen went black and "d-sub power save mode" was all that was shown. After a few restarts my PC would start normally but take me directly into bios where I disabled the power save mode but still went blank after a few hours of running normal. I tried restarting as I had done the first time but noticed my screen stayed blank after multiple restarts. Eventually my PC had brought me to the bios page as did before but when I would exit bios this time Windows XP no longer appeared and I was back to blank screen. Now I can't even access bios and the screen stays blank but the fans and cd drive work and everything sounds normal on startup.

Here's what I've tried but had no luck.
1. Reseated the memory and agp video card
2. Removed CMOS for hours and put it back
3. Thoroughly cleaned inside PC
4. Switched power cables and tried monitor on a laptop and monitor works fine on laptop
5. Pressed all key commands
6. Inserted Windows XP cd and I can hear it running but no picture

Answer:Monitor blank screen "power save mode"

If you have more than one RAM stick try one at a time. Disconnect all drives, extra cards (sound etc.) leave just CPU/HS/fan, RAM and vid card. Try video card in another system. Replace power supply. I realized these last two are not always possible.

An elderly neighbour turned this monitor off at the wall socket. Now, when turned on, the leds around the power switch light yellow briefly - then flashes blue 4 times then steady blue for about 15 secs. The cycle then repeats. It looks to me as though it needs a reset somehow. Google not too much help. I've tried holding a combination of the front buttons while powering on to no effect.Anyone any ideas, please?

Hi.

I have a LG TFT monitor from 2009. A fews days it was troublesome in getting a display. I pulled out and reconnected the VGA connector and rebooted. Eventually I got the display back. However now the power light flashes and there's no display.

Last night I left it running and it said something like 'no signal...' with circled circles. I rebooted a spare PC and it was working again. This morn it's back to a flashing power light and no display. Is the monitor finished?

Update: I left it running and connected to my spare PC for over 15 minutes and the display just returned. :confused

Answer:LG monitor power light flashes and no display.

If you can borrow another monitor and VGA cable, I'd hook it to the PC and see what happens.

If the other monitor shows the same problems, it's likely a problem with you PC's video card.

If the other monitor works, try the old one with the different VGA cable.

If neither of these solve them problem, the issue is with the old monitor itself.

Hi!
I have a Dell XPS 13 9333 from 2014. The computer has a dual Windows Linux installation, and has aways worked perfectly. Some days ago, I started up the laptop and there was no Dell logo or anything in the screen, although the backlight was working. I though the computer was totally broken.
After connecting it to an external monitor, I realized that the computer was actually working, but somehow the LCD was not receiving any image. I tried booting the computer in the LCD-test mode (pressing D at startup) and the screen seems to work fine. I also opened the computer to check whether the LCD was correctly connected to the motherboard, and it looked fine to me.
I don´t know what to think now. Because if the LCD test is run internally by the LCD integrated chip, then my guess would be that the problem is in the graphic card. If on the other hand the test is performed by the graphic card, then I would think is a problem with the LCD conector or cable. Last but not least: The computer sends images when connected to an external monitor once has loaded Linux. But since that is drivers dependent, I am not sure what does that says about the state of the graphic card.
Any advice or coment would help. The laptop is still quite powerful, and I would like to repair it. I wouldn´t like to buy a new screen or a motherboard and that the problem was somewhere. Could it be some problem with the ACPI? Also, can somebody tell me how much it would be to take the computer to a dell ... Read more

Hi My F1904 monitor seems to have a fault. When I power it on the power switch flashes amber and I get no display. Any suggestions? There does not seem to be any mention of this in the documentation. Many Thanks

Answer:F1904 Monitor flashing amber power light

amber usually means sleep mode. flashing can mean different things. Disconnect the video cable, turn it off, pull the power plug, wait 10 seconds, plug it in and turn it on. Press the OSD buttons to see if you can bring up the on screen display. If that comes, up try connecting it again. Hopefully the PC is not sending out a bad video signal.

Hello there!I've been using this monitor for 7 years and I have been encountering this problem for 2 years every time I start up my computer. Now I finally decided to seek solutions for this problem. My monitor power lights up for 3 secs and it disappear for 1-2 secs and lights up again for 3secs and this goes on for 10-15minutes before it could finally show the screen. So it is like 10-15 minutes of black screen and no sign of power. Pressing menu or other buttons doesn't work because it doesn't have any power in it. So I tried a different cord and it has the same problem. I tried a different monitor and both cords are working fine. It is only the monitor itself and I was wondering the monitor could be worn out or there's something wrong with the monitor. Thanks for reading and I hope to receive your help as soon as possible!

A friend says this SYS Technology, Inc. monitor was working last time he used it, gave it to me. Does not have DVI, just VGA cable. Model SYS-15L-C-JT, label says it was made April 2002. I cannot find any SYS tech support. I'm looking to see if this thing is dead or if what's wrong is something simple or what. Is there a diagnostic program I can download?

I have tried a few things, like changing the sequence of connections, but it seems not to respond to power button or other controls on front. Each time I plug it in to power source (whether or not it's connected to PC) power light flashes green and it clicks every second or so. There is no picture nor status message onscreen.

Hi! I'm new here so I'm going to try and give as much information as needed.

I'm running Windows Vista on a Dell Desktop. Everything worked fine until two days ago when the new Windows updates installed. Now, I get the Windows screen, get the login screen, but after I type in my password, I get a light blue screen with nothing on it but my cursor.

I can run task manager from here and individually run programs, but I cannot get the internet to work and not all programs work correctly. I tried doing a system restore from this task manager but it froze the computer. I can also see I am running 27 processes, but it only lists 5 (all of which are Windows processes and cannot be stopped).

I can run safemode with a prompt, but I cannot run regular safemode as it gives the same blue screen after I put in my password.

I have used the Vista CD to repair and restore the computer to a previous point, but it gave me a memory error and said the task could not be completed. The error is "the instruction at 0x7449060a referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read."

Any ideas? I'm about to throw the whole thing out of the window...

Answer:Vista not loading...blank light blue screen

Also, when I run Windows Memory Diagnostics tool, it does tell me that hardware problems were detected. But it doesn't tell me what those are.

Hi,

The VGA external output works fine, I have no problems with an external monitor.

I have already changed the flat cable (Flex) that goes to the display, but I got the same results.
Can anyone help me? What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Satellite L500-19X - Screen goes blank (white light)

Fact is that graphic card is OK since you said that external display works properly.
Therefore I guess that either the internal display or the FL inverter is the troublemaker.
But its just an personal opinion? I think you will need to test both parts?

When I shutdown the vista PC the monitor power light stays green and a box saying, "self test feature check" floats all around the monitor. My XP machine after shutdown the power light turns amber with nothing being displayed.
Does anyone have any ideas? The monitor should hibernate when the PC is shutdown.

This happens off & on: My Gateway 5458E desktop will turn on, but the power light doesn't come on (should be blue) & there is no signal to the monitor. The computer powers up, can hear sounds (fan, etc), keyboard lights up, can see light from dvd player, but nothing on monitor & no power light. Have tried a different monitor with same results. The computer has also turned itself off while working ok a couple of times & wouldn't restart correctly until next day, but most of the time this happens when I try to do a restart or just turn on computer after being turned off. What could be causing it to start sometimes & not others? Thanks!

Answer:Gateway desktop turns on but power light not on & no signal to monitor.

A failing Power Supply sounds like the root cause of this issue.Any local computer store will be able to help you with one. The power supply is one of the most important parts of a computer. If they offer something really cheap, eg $30 it is not very good quality, the higher quality the better.Assuming you are using the machine as standard, a 350W PSU will cover you, however if you plan on getting a graphics card to play games or video edit ect a 500W minimum should be followed.

I was on my computer one morning and we happened to have a power flash, quickly on and off. Afterwards i turn on my computer, everything comes normally, gives me the safe boot option, i start up windows 7 log in and it freezes, on a side note that is very unusal. I've had my setup for a month now and not 1 freeze. Afterwards anytime i attempt to turn on my computer the monitor stays amber and nothing shows, no bios nothing. I've tried tried multiple things such as replacing the power supply, running bare minimum (1 stick of ram, cpu, cpu fan and power supply without graphics card installed), Ironically im in a nerdrage rush to get it fixed by 11p.m. central time tonight, a new game i've been preparing for with new comp upgrades and such for months comes out on midnight and i very much so intend to be there for it.

my computer specs:
890GPA-UD3H Motherboard
3.3 dual core am3 socket processor
9800gt xlr8 nvidia graphics card
2 sticks of 2 gig 1333mhz ddr3 ram
600w Power supply
500 gig sata harddrive

im running windows 7 professional 64x

i was running a 480w power supply when the power flashed, i bought a 600w today.

Hello, I have issues with Y50 - there were flickering green lines and occasionaly the screen was going black and I had to reset few times until it boots up. Now the screen wont turn on at all. I disambled and cleaned the lcd display cable carefully along with charger and etc. If I point a flashlight to the screen Im able to see a really faint picture. Any ideas which component exactly went bad ?  Regards

Answer:Y50 - blank screen, faint image visible under bright light

It seems like one of two things. The display has gone bad, or the display cable or port on the motherboard has gone bad. To resovle this issue, I would suggest contacting Lenovo support. If you need assistance in finding it, please reply back.

Hello. So my Dell dimension 4600 just lost mointor/video signal one day. All the fans, drives and CPU were still workin away. I figured ok great my video card is blown(in my case the MB). So I install a new MB. Still no video or monitor signal....I have checked the diagnostic lights on the back and none of them are lite. I have tested the power supply - seems fine. I have unplugged everything other than the CPU, main and second power to MB. I am getting no error beeps. I am so lost here!! I need some help please!! Thanx

Answer:Dell 4600 solid power amber light - no signal to monitor..help!

I would have tried another monitor before buying another board.Try hooking up a different monitor to the computer.  If that doesn't work try another monitor cable. If you have no other monitor, try hooking up your current monitor to another computer.  If it works then it means there's something going on with your computer.  If not, then the problem is most likely that  your monitor is bad.

I replaced my damaged screen on my Model number eleven Dee zero one zero double u em, with the exact same type of screen I bought off amazon. I even double checked the screen and made sure was the same screen model number, B116XW03 Be one one six ex double u zero three I followed the instructions down to the letter of the video, being very careful. I put all back together just as the guy said in the video and now my screen won't come on. I reopened and checked that video cable was attached properly it and put it back together again and the screen still won't come on. My power light comes on and stays on, nothing else is flickering or doing crazy stuff and still my won't come on. What other troubleshooting technique should I try? Please help.

Answer:I replaced my laptop screen, my power light is on but screen...

What is the complete product number or product name of your notebook? Connect an external LCD display to the notebook. If the display shows a normal desktop and you have  carefully double checked the connections of the laptop screen, contact the seller for an RMA.   That test shows the display  is faulty and your notebook's video solution is working as it should.

Hello,
After putting my computer into sleep mode last night, I was unable to get it to boot into windows this morning. When i pressed the power buttong, everything turn on and working (all fans are functional, gpu power led is on, all hard drives & cd drives are functional. But the problem is, the screen to my monitor is blank. I also noticed that my usb aren't working (mouse connection light isn't on). I tried a soft power off by holding down the power button but no luck. The system does not turn off no matter how long I hold it. The only way to turn it off is by pulling the power supply cord or turning the power supply switch off.

My pc build:

AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz Socket AM3+ 6 core processor

Prolimatech PRO Panther 120mm CPU Cooler
NZXT Phantom PHAN-001RD case

THE PROBLEM: Computer turn on with everything running as usual, but shows blank screen on monitor. Cannot soft power off by pressing power button.

Things I tried:

Clear CMOS by removing battery and switching pins
Running with 1 4GB RAM instead of 2, move the ram around the slots & alternate which Ram is used.
Check my monitor by testing it with another computer
Tried pulling the PS plug and holding the computer power button for 1 min

Answer:Windows 7 blank screen after sleep mode (unable to power off with power button)

Hello,

Is it possible that you can test with another compatible PSU? I would strongly suggest doing so.

Also try the following steps:
?Make sure that the (internal) speaker is connected to the motherboard
?Remove all memory and attempt to boot the PC
?You should get the no memory beep errors

If the Power Supply is in working order and no beeps are present then it can be indicative of a faulty motherboard.

For troubleshooting purposes it may be a good idea to remove the components from the case and bench test to rule out a short.

I have a Lenovo B540 thats a few years old. Yesterday morning i woke up to use it and the screen will not come on. No boot screen, nothing. i tried to see if it was asleep so i moved the mouse and keyboard and still nothing. the only thing that seems to work is the power button which lights up and the light on the far right of the screen. so far i have tried:i tried unplugging it and pressing the power button and letting it power down and plugging everything back in, nothing.tried hooking up an hdmi cable to view on tv and nothing.i tried removing the hard drive and the ram and nothing. Any ideas? Like i said the only thing that light up is the actual power button and the touch button to the right of the monitor. which will also on occasion slowly blink. and i can also hear the hard drive

Answer:B40 GETS POWER BUT SCREEN DOES NOT LIGHT UP

It just did this? Did it crash the day before, or before? Perhaps do you know about a power outage or surge?

Hello guys, i recently got infected by some nasty something.I ran malwarebytes full scan and combofix (which deleted some files in SysWoW64 and SimpleScreenShot.exe), after having done a system restore (restored to state of 4 days ago). Before all that, my PC opened CMD after booting for a sec, then closed it again, 5 to 10 mins later, the screen went blank and there was no sound anymore. As neither screen nor sound got back, i forced the pc to shut down, but it's light still remained on. Most off that is gone, since i restored system and used combofix, but i read, that i should post my log, so one of you could review it and make sure my pc's clean again.Hope it's not that bad and,Thank you very much in advance, greez.ComboFix 12-05-05.05 - pc 05/05/2012 13:53:09.2.8 - x64Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 6.1.7601.1.1252.1.1033.18.9207.7187 [GMT 2:00]Running from: c:\users\pc\Downloads\ComboFix.exeAV: Microsoft Security Essentials *Disabled/Updated* {9765EA51-0D3C-7DFB-6091-10E4E1F341F6}SP: Microsoft Security Essentials *Disabled/Updated* {2C040BB5-2B06-7275-5A21-2B969A740B4B}SP: Windows Defender *Disabled/Outdated* {D68DDC3A-831F-4fae-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}..((((((((((((((((((((((((( Files Created from 2012-04-05 to 2012-05-05 )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))..2012-05-05 12:00 . 2012-05-05 12:00 -------- d-----w- c:\users\Default\AppData\Local\temp2012-05-05 11:43 . 2012-04-13 08:46 8917360 ----a-w- c:\programdata\... No Power to Mouse or Keyboard, Monitor stuck in Power Save Mode (Amber Light)Hello all,My G/F's computer recently quit working all of a sudden. It's an old Gateway computer that she bought years ago, the CPU is a 1.2Ghz Celeron (I know). I'm not sure of the exact model of the mobo but I think it's an Intel Desktop Board. Anyway, it was working fine the night before and then the next morning when she turned it on there was no power to the mouse or keyboard and the monitor was stuck in power save mode (amber light). The monitor itself is a Dell flat screen that I gave her. The machine is pretty much the way it came from Gateway except for a few things I've installed. Those things being a CD/DVD burner, a Linksys PCI card and a GeForce FX 5500 128MB PCI vid card (No AGP on this thing) so that she could play a few less demanding games. Searching for information about the problem always leads me to a forum where someone had the same symptoms and the common answer was, "Sounds like the PSU." Her PSU however is working properly, it even has a little green light on it and a test switch. All the fans are running (CPU, PSU, Vid Card) and the machine boots up fine (green lights) but there is no POST beep. In fact, this thing never had a post beep since I've known her that I or she can remember. The hard drive doesn't sound like it's spinning either. I have pulled out the PCI cards and got the same result, I've also re-seated the RAM. Other than attempting to figure out what's ... Read more

Answer:No Power to Mouse or Keyboard, Monitor Blank

Whether the power supply works at all or works correctly are two different things. How old and what wattage does it claimn to have? Can you put another PSU in there to test? Did this all happen after the new video card? That may have been enough extra drain to speed up it's demise.

I believe my computer possibly has some type of hijacker or adware and randomly when i am on my computer the monitor will go dimmer and then when it is dim for around 3 seconds it will go totally black. The power to the monitor is still on (green). Its not power settings, and it is not a bad cable from my pc to the monitor. From last few days my PC has developed a display problem. (which I believe it to be related to win xp rather than monitor)On switching on start button the monitor remains blank only. The power on indicator turns green and continuously blinking @ 3 secs. As usually I do when any problem encountered with my pc, searched for a solution in the net and found a discussion at one place one with similar symptom. It says to switch off the mains and keep the PC start button depress for few secs and then to go for normal start. I find that It works ok, but the problem is not solved for ever. Next time when I go for normal start same problem appears.

If any body has a better solution pl suggest. my PC is HP with LCD monitor, graphics on board. OS is XP Sp3.

Answer:Monitor blank, power led blinking green

So on a cold start up - if you just press the start button - monitor won't display anything. But, if you hold in the start button, you are able to get a display?

I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly.

Hi,     As you mentioned latop turns on but nothing else happens, please turn off your laptop and turn the laptop on and keep tapping f11 key on keyboard now you must see recovery manager screen, select system restore on the list and select earlier date when your laptop was working fine and click finish at bottom once the laptop restarts you should be able to use without any problem, If not then check lights on caps and num lock whether it is blinking if yes then check how many times caps lock blink and reply back to this message, and if their no light blinking then you might have to reseat RAM and HDD even after reseat if still their is no display try connecting it to external monitor and check if their is no display then it should be problem with motherboard.  Thanks.ChetanI work on behalf of HPPlease click ?Accept as Solution ? on the post that solves your issue to help others find the solution.Click the KUDOS STAR on the left to say ?Thanks? for helping!

This morning I was working on my laptop and all of a sudden the screen went black as if it went into hibernation.  I can vaguely see images on the screen and managed to turn it off.  I removed the power cord and then the battery for 10 seconds.  After putting the battery back and plugging the computer back in, I turned it on and got a very dim and flickery screen, which last for less than 5 minutes.  Now it turns on and is a dull orange-ish color and lasts about 2 seconds.  What do I need to do?  Is it time for my laptop to see a mechanic???  HELP!! Can it be fixed yourself without to much hastle?
If it can't be fixed yourself, could bestbuy or a computer store fix this problem for a reasonable price?

PLEASE suggest any info you might have!

Good Day Everyone,

It has been a long time since I posted here, mostly due to major life changes, loss of jobs, etc. I wish I could be more active.

In any case. The issue I am having is 1 of my 3 media machines is not working correctly and I cannot figure out what changed. I have 3 Dell 790's (yes I know they are old but they do the job) connected via DisplayPort to HDMI to TVs. All have worked perfectly for the last 3 years and for the last 2 years on Windows 10. 2 days ago I took the 1709 update for all of them, they are on 365x24x7 and are in some state of use throughout the day. All 3 machines took the update fine, all machines work very well. Except, 1 of the machines, when I turn off the TV and come back later the screen is blank, blank like when you are logging into Windows 10 on a 2 monitor system and the second monitor is blank. The machine is running, and everything is working, just the video is gone. I have done a bunch of testing and the machine is working, if I pause a video, turn off the TV and then turn it back on the screen is blank but pressing a key the video starts playing and you can hear the sound. The computer is fine, it is working, just no video. I have tried a bunch of tips in the forum but nothing has worked. BTW swapped the TV just incase, still has the same problem. I have done all the other normal things, scan for viruses, disk corruption, registry issues, etc.

All machines are:

Windows 10 Pro 1709 16299.125
Intel i5-4590T 2Ghz
8GB RAM

I have been using 2 monitors for a year or so. One day my second monitor stopped working. When the computer starts or I cycle power to the monitor the screen displays briefly (1-2 seconds) and then goes blank. It shows the desktop correctly (or whatever would be there) but won't stay that way. Each monitor works correctly on it's own and in either port and with either DVI cable.

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240
Monitor1: Samsung Syncmaster 245BW
Monitor2: LG Flatron W2361V

What I have tried:
1. I have switched out all cables.
2. Tried monitor on another computer (works)
3. Unplugged everything and let it sit 20 minutes or so and then plugged it all back in
4. Updated video drivers, including a fresh install of Nvidia control software
5. Adjusted to all available refresh rates and resolutions on both monitors

Answer:Second monitor briefly displays then goes blank after power is cycled

What's the common factor; the DVI port in use, or one particular monitor?

I have a black screen on my Acer Apire 4552 Laptop. I am fairly good at fixing computer problems, but this has me stumped? This is what I have done so far:

1. Took off the battery and held down the power button for 2min, then plugged the power back in without the battery and nothing happened. tried this also with holding down the F8 and also again holding down the f10 button. Nothing.

2. I thought it was the hard drive , so I had bought a new one and put it in and hit F10 and my computer started to boot up! So I decided to put my old hard drive back in and by chance it came on and started to boot up also. I was very happy and I used the computer for 1 day with my power cord plugged in, but when I unplugged it and went to plug it back in later and use it again it was back to the dreaded Black screen!

3. As suggested, I took my computer back apart and pulled out the both RAM memory cards and cleaned them and tried switching them in each others slot as suggested and re-booted the computer multiple times, but to no avail. Still nothing?

4. Another thing I notice: My battery had gone bad a year ago and I bought another one and had been using it fine, but it does get much much hotter than my old one as it runs. So I don't know if it is shutting down over that or not? I put it in the freezer for 15min as suggested by others and tryed turning it on again, but still nothing!

ANY SUGGESTIONS??? IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

Answer:BLACK SCREEN, NO CURSOR, just power light- Acer As...

Try connecting the unit to another monitor or TV via VGA cables.  If you get the same black screen, it is likely the graphics card.  On most Acers, the card is embedded in the motherboard.  Acer discontinues parts rapidly. You may have to settle for a refurbished "certified" board from Acer.  They're costly and are warrantied just 30 days.  Even Acer doesn't believe in their products!

Hi, everyone. I have an Acer Aspire E3-112 netbook suddenly stop working. The battery is charging when plugged in but when power button was press, power LED no light. I have done some research, and done the following but didn't work.a)  Unplugged charger and remove battery. Pressing down power button for more than 60 sec.b)  Tested RAM and it is still good,c)  strip down everthing and waited for 30 minutes. Then press power button with screen connected. Noticed the CPU is warming up.d)  Tried pressing power button with HDMI cable connecting to my TV,  When I hold down Fn + ESC while powering up with a USB Stick of BIOS files (2GB), the USB drive flashes once every 30 sec. I am convince that this is probably a sign of life and it can still be saved. I noticed that the BIOS update file from Acer website is for Windows mode. Is there anywhere I can download the BIOS file which can be updated on Boot-up (so call freedos). The warranty is over, I am asking for help. Many thanks.

Hello, I just replaced the power jack on my W530 Thinkpad but now when I plug in the adapter my thinkpad turns on automatically, without me hitting the power on button, and the only visible light is the power button. Here is a video I uploaded demonstrating this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/n9gkjykywoc4h77/20170124_014353.mp4?dl=0 As you can see there is nothing on the screen and when I hook it up to my monitor nothing is visible there either. I tried double checking each piece of hardware to make sure I put things back together correctly and couldn't find any mistakes. Any ideas?

Hi... Try a power reset. Unplug the adapter (power cord) off the laptop, if you have connected. On the bottom side of the laptop, you will see a small reset hole with a battery symbol. Please insert a thin object like a paper clip into this hole and hold it for 5 seconds. Then plug in the adapter.Turn on the laptop check for the issue.

Day before yesterday when I was trying to start my laptop, the light turned on-off continuously several times, and finally the power key light turned on but the screen was black. And yesterday the light turned on-off thrice. But after that every time I turned it, the power button light got on, but the screen was black.Present situation: On starting my laptop, the power key light is on, but the screen persists to be black, not getting on-off on it's own. I found one solution, of removing the battery as well as charger and pressing the power key for about 60 seconds. But it didn't help. Please suggest what might the problem be and solutions!!

Hello,

I am having quite a problem with my computer:
After a while of idling, or in the middle of a game, the screen will go black, but the light stays green, indicating there still is a signal.. i think. This is on my 21' CRT. So i tried another monitor, an LCD , while this is happening, and i get the message 'Mode not supported'. I tried installing an older nvidia driver thinking that could be the problem, but it didn't fix it. When this happens i see the video card fan is still going, and I'm really not sure what is wrong.
If you could help me out that would be most excellent, the computer i am on now has Intel Extreme Graphics 2 onboard video, and it is painful to play any decent game on it.

Thanks in advance!

Edit : I also remembered sometimes(rarely) when i shut the computer it wont react when i try to turn it back on with the power button, but a few mins later as if by magic it turns on.

Hey all, really hoping somebody out there can help me out. I am having one hell of an issue.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2
Power Supply: Alienware 650 Watt ATX 2.0 Power Supply with Active PFC

Storage Drive: High Performance - 160GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7,200 RPM w/ NCQ & 8MB Cache
Primary Display: Samsung SyncMaster 1100DF 21" CRT Display - Black

I built this computer as a gaming computer about a year ago and I have never had any issues. I have had maybe a total of 5 total lock-ups in Windows until recently.

Last night I went to play Rainbow Six: Vegas and after about 30 seconds my computer just Locked Up - no control whatsoever. I rebooted and here is where things started to get weird.

At the Windows XP logo there is some vertical blue bars that are about 2-3 inches long and about half a cm space in between each. There is roughly 10 of these bars that go across my whole screen. They look kind of like static, or what you would expect something "bad" that you would see upon booting a PC.

I tried the game again thinking oh... Read more

black screen on startup, monitor standby light is on

I have a dual boot macintosh/vista machine and it has worked fine for a long time until recently. when i switch the computer on the monitor is black and the standby light is on. i made sure the cables are all plugged in correctly! when i unplug the monitor from pc it states that an "input is not detected" but when i plug it back in, it's just black. i swapped the monitor with a working one and same thing. black. so i assume it is the computer itself, but dont know where to start! help!

Are you comfortable with opening up your computer?

If so, remove the graphics card and reseat it. To remove the graphics card, you will need to push on the two clasps that hold the graphics card in; they should be on the sides of where the graphics card meets with the motherboard.

If that does not resolve it, try removing the graphics card and

[u]se an ink eraser or an electrical contact treatment, available at electronics supply stores, to ensure adapter card contacts are clean

The above was taken from: Bug Check 0x7A: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.

As you add and remove hardware, follow these steps for ESD safety:Shut down and turn off your computer.
Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

Answer:Screen going black - Light on Monitor stays Green

Sounds like your video card is going out, or not getting enough power. Check your PSU, maybe try reinstalling the video card drivers.

I had a simular problem, my monitor would go blank on about the 3rd 3d Mark test, then several minutes later my score would pop up on the screen and I could see my desktop. Got a new GPU, everything is working fine.

Good luck, hopefully someone else will have some more infor for you.

ok - i built my new computer and everything was working fine-- all the case fans were spinning, the lights were all on, the cd drive worked, and the fans on the graphics and cpu are spinning

at first the light on the pc flashed green which meant nothing, so i got a new SDRAM which i believed was the problem, all seemed to be working, but when i hooked the monitor up, the light went from solid green to amber- if anyone can help- it is greatly appreciated-- could it be a wire isnt connected to the right spot? i really hope it isnt the graphics card because it was $300 alone--

thanks for any help!

Answer:HELP- monitor wont show- amber light on screen

If the Monitor light goes from green to amber then yes there is problem with the vid card not being able to dispaly anything, it could be that it isn't seated properly in whatever slot your using, What Vid card is it, it maybe that you need to connect it to power on the motherboard, it also could be that your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card and everything else so what wattage is the power supply?

This problem happens each time I am powering up from a complete shutdown.  I tried running the system check in the lenovo toolbox and it said everything ok.  I tried booting and holding down F1 to run some diagnostic test(this is a bit beyond me but i read to try it).  I start the test, but it will hang at '0% out of 100 completed'.  Can someone help me troubleshoot this problem.  Thanks in advance.

No techie at all but hope this helps....

For some reason the monitor suddenly went blank this afternoon saying "No Signal". Spent a lot of time and read a lot of posts via Google trying to sort it out without success until I read something somewhere about "Define power buttons and turn on Password protection" in "Power Options" none of which I really understood. However at the bottom it said "require or don't require a password" which as I'd already created one ignored and was about to continue looking.

Then at the last moment I thought why not so ticked the box that said "Don't require a password" re-booted and the monitor came on ! Strangest of all I had to enter my original password again and so far it's been fine ever since.

I'll leave it all to the experts but I was already thinking I'd have to buy a new monitor even though this is only a couple of years old so obviously very chuffed - though I've still got my fingers crossed.

So if it's of any help to anyone....?

Hello all, I have a mysterious problem dealing with starting up my computer.I will try to detail everything I have done. The computer I have is a Compaq Presario V5000T Laptop. It was running service pack 3, XP home, and 2GB ram. Everything else on it was factory. The ram was recently installed, factory ram was 512MB. (About a month ago- upgraded to 2 GB)Also, the AC Adapter wire was torn a few months ago, and was replaced 2 months ago, but not with a compaq standard adapter. (I bought a generic one with the same specs.)The laptop has been running fine for the last 2 months, and had no issues with anything. But yesterday, as I was browsing the internet, the computer suddenly turns off.  (The battery and ac adapter were both plugged in.)I though the ac adpter may have gotten loose, so I replugged it in, and then tried turning it on. This did not work. I was late for class, so I took off without testing it further.I came back about 8 hours later, and tried to turn it on again. (Battery and AC adapter both in) It turned on, and I was able to use the computer for about 15 minutes. When all of a sudden, the computer turned off again, with no warning. However, this time, when I attempted to turn it on, it fails. I hear the cd drive running, but nothing else happens. The screen remains dark, and the other major sign is the the Power button (IO) constantly blinks orange. The LCD light on the panel also blinks (IO) in the same fashion. I have tried many things, such as unplugging th... Read more

High i'm a student at a high school computer help desk and i've seen something that might be your problem.1.your hardrive might be faulty and cuasing the problem-try getting someones elses COMPATIBLE hardrive and installing it to see if thats the problem2. I've also had to replace a couple of AC/DC power converters for some computers with those symptoms but that shouldn't be a problem for battery power on a laptop3 The final cuase i have seen is a bad mother board

My Dell Latitude E5440 won't boot. Just black screen with power light on. If i pres the power button, the fan running and turns off
I have tried the following:
- Pulled the battery out, connect the charger and turn on
- Removed BIOS battery, connect the charger and turn on
- Swapped RAM
- Removed both RAM, and try 1 RAM
None of these helps. I have tried to remove all RAM and turn on, fan running and turns off. It is out of warranty and I'm lazy to fully disassemble my laptop

power light comes on but the screen remains black there is no sound nor any flickers please help operating hp 2000 dual core windows 7 thank you very much!

Answer:turn on the computer and power light goes on but screen remains black

If this is a notebook PC, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. If the display comes up on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen.

If there is no display on an external monitor connected to a notebook PC, it points to an issue with the motherboard and will require a professional diagnosis.

Hope this helps.
