Preferred Solution: Slow Start, Slow When Opening Boxes, Can I Reinstall Xp Without Having To Reintall My Internet

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Slow Start, Slow When Opening Boxes, Can I Reinstall Xp Without Having To Reintall My Internet

Before taking the major step of reinstalling your OS, try two things first:1. Delete and then re-install MSN Messenger (that will fix your corrupt file)2. Review the Slow Computer Troubleshooting Checklist that can be found here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/44690/slow-computer/Regards,John

If someone could help, I would be all so appreciative. My computer seems to be infected. Internet browsing is very sluggish, I get random menu box pop ups (eg. "A friend you recently added on MySpace has a crush on you...") as well as internet site pop ups. I have run VundoFix and it was finds a few files and prompts me to reboot so it can delete them, but they always reappear next time under a different filename.A copy of my logfile is attached but please let me know if further information is needed.KevinLogfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 11:45:56 AM, on 7/10/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16441)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AppCore\AppSvc32.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUScheduler... Okay, In July windows 8 crashed. I had to get in contact with HP to get recovery disks and reload it. It's been working great since then. Until today, It's been slower, automatically disconeccting its self from the internet. No, the internet did not go out. I verified that by my phone and another computer in the house. Now, the third problem is often times as I pass the cursor over an icon behind said icon goes black. So, if I click and drag as if I'm selecting multiple the whole section goes black. This, I got on video. Although it's cell phone recorded, I'll post so people can see.

Answer:Slow, disconnected from internet, and black boxes?

Answer:Not Again! Slow PC, Slow Start Up, Slow Outside of Internet

Hello justanotherguy,

You continue to get reinfected because you are still running unpatched XP.

IMPORTANT!:
Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system.) At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it?s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from.

My computer has been getting very slow and sounds like there are all kinds of things going on when there shouldn't be. I checked my speed on 2wire and it's only 2.12. My son was going to porn/game sites and no telling what got picked up. I've run all the items off "READ & RUN ME FIRST", I also ran HouseCall. I'm attaching all the logs. I have MS Windows XP Home Ed. use IE browser, Intel Pentium 4A, 2018 MHz (5x404) 224MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM) and use SBC High-Speed DSL. I hope that's all the info requested. I tried to attach all 3 scans correctly.

Also, should I back-up my documents and pictures prior to doing any of the changes -- and how do I do that.

Computer was fine until I installed a new printer. Printer took over the internet and OneCare showed a pop-up "hp requires access to internet" every time I opened an internet window. I uninstalled printer, ran scandisk, defrag, spybot, OneCare for virus, and disk clean-up. I am not sure if all of this is interrelated. The fact my computer used to be fairly quick makes me think I messed something up or junk programs are interfering. Any clean-up help or troubleshooting is greatly appreciated. I am having major problems since reinstalling Windows xp. I did it last year and it worked so well to speed up my system that I decided to do it once a year. Since I did it, however, and have reinstalled Firefox and all my other stuff, Firefox is constantly crashing. It tries and tries but cannot enter some websites (like yours) then finally after I try again and again, it pops in. If I have Rhapsody up, it will lock up then unlock. I have noticed that often it sounds like there is a lot going on in my tower, more than usual. Just now, however, even though I had trouble getting the internet to work, it wasn't making that noise so...I would show you what processes are running if that would help, but don't know how to post that.

Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting upa nd I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting up and I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

#1 Desktop and start menu programs won't respond. Can be clicked and the arrow with hourglass will show up, but with no response. Sometimes clicking on them will freeze and lock up. Sometimes they will, but it is only after several manual shut downs. If it does respond (such as clicking on internet explorer), upon closing out the program it will not respond again without a manual shut down.

#2 Boot up is a lot slower, will stay on "Loading your personal settings". Takes longer than it usually would.

#3 Shut down is slower or will freeze. All desktop items and desktop will be clear, leaving just background, as usual before a shut down, and will freeze leaving the arrow cursor still there. My computer is running very slowly, especially on start-up and when opening applications. Once my browser finally opens, I usually don't have problems browsing the internet, but even a basic operation like emptying the recycle bin takes 10 secs or more, opening app such as Windows Media Player, 30 secs or more, etc. Computer is only a few months old and was running fine until about 1 month ago. I have tried eliminating unneeded programs from startup option in system config, without improvement. Have 4GB of RAM anyway, with few programs, so don't think that was the issue. Have also done a disc cleanup/defrag. Malwarebytes can find no problems. Nor can my antivirus program, PCcillan. I have created system restore points several times, but they are deleted once comp is re-started.

Below and attached are my DDS logs. The GMER rootkit found no errors.

Appreciate any help.

Alright, so I just moved from the RC to Windows 7 Professional. I did a complete reinstall, and after having some annoying issues where the computer couldn't find my wireless card, I'm now successfully connected to the internet.

However, now my internet speeds are abysmal! I tried updating the driver for my wireless card, and I know it's not a problem with my ISP or router or modem, because my other computer (a laptop) is working just fine.

Can you guys suggest anything that I can check or update to get things back to normal?

This is very confusing because I had no problems last time I did this, and the computer is essentially a blank slate... no firewalls to mess things up, no viruses... I'm totally lost. Thanks for your help in advance!

Answer:Internet slow after reinstall of Windows 7

Make sure you have the latest correct chipset and network drivers. If no Windows 7 driver exists use the Vista one. I assume you are letting Windows or Device Manager find drivers. That often works, but when you are having trouble like this ...

This is my preferred order for finding drivers:

1. PC manufacturer's web site,
2. Motherboard manufacturer's web site,
3. Device manufacturer's web site,
4. A "drivers" site, such as DriverGuide,
5. Anywhere you can find one that might work,
6. Let Device Manager try to find one.
7. Use Windows Update.

I am operating windows xp witn IE 8 and this laptop is acting like it is 10 years old. I go to yahoo and click on anything and it takes up to a minute to open any article. I have a toshiba satellite that had vista on it but my hard drive went and i had xp put on it. It is just so slow opening anything it is terribly frustrating

Answer:Very slow opening anything on the internet

A slow computer on the internet is more about your internet connection. Check your internet speed at speedtest.net.
Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with yellow flags? What is the make and model # of your Toshiba Satelite? Are there drivers available from the Toshiba site for XP for your model? If the computer shipped with Vista it may not have all the drivers you require, which would slow you down. Try running a Clean Boot.
Also, click on the link in my signature for PC Running Slow? and try those things.

I am looking at a computer with a slow responding Internet Explorer. The computer has a wireless adapter and has a good signal. No pop ups or other signs of malware / spyware / viruses. Internet Explorer just opens slow. I am wondering if it is need of repair. There seems to be decent speed going from page to page. It takes about 35 seconds for the page to load. Once loaded it moves along at a decent clip. Any ideas?
Thanks
Jerry

Never had something this intense before. I've got multiple chrome and explorer processes running in the background, and can only access the internet with explorer, but very slow in page loading.

I ran the read and run me first, but could not run mbam. The process opened but the application would never open. TDDskiller would not run, used fixtdds and nothing was found. The trial period for hitman pro is expired, so I bought a license, but the key will not activate, just keeps thinking. So hitman would not run either.

Looked at the hijacking/redirection thread and followed those steps. Ran jrt and hijack this opened, saying I had a lot of hijacked domains. Never had hijacked domains so this is new to me.

Attached are all the logs that could run. Thank you for any help.

Re run RogueKiller and have it fix these entries on the files tab:

[PUP][Folder] C:\ProgramData\{E1ED556E-3EA0-4F44-8BE7-CC5FB0F4B424} -> Found
Follow these instructions to reset your host file:
Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{6F1DB67A-D8D4-4060-960C-958F0C423DB2}]Click to expand...

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.
Reboot the machine.
Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
Now see if you are able to run Malware Bytes and Hitman Pro.

Hello everyone!

First, I am no expert in computer nor networking. I have been having some issues for a long time but it has been getting pretty bothersome lately. My net used to drop for half a second or become very slow for little period of time (sometimes a couple minutes ranging to half an hour) but now it drops even when opening web pages and such (the page will slowly load, the internet connection will go down for half a second, making skype call drop as well and then come back right after). It has been like that for a couple months at least.

The net is usualy slow and it used to be rather fast, even with the same equipment. Speedtest says the uploading speed is fine but download speed is awful.

I have tried using multiple browsers to see if it was not just one. I currently am using chrome the most but tried with other internet software(Firefox, internet explorer) but the problem remains the same. I also ran most anti virus and anti malware cleaning tools I have (Malware bites, Adw cleaner, Hitman Pro, etc). I though it could of been a virus but then, even after the cleaning tools, the problem was still present.

My internet provider is Comcast (nothing else available around here). About two weeks ago, the net was doing great for about a week and started doing bad again after that. That happens once in a while where the net does well but then goes back to being quite unstable.

The net was fine as I used my cellphone's skype but it still was slow on my computer. ... Read more

When I open my IE7 it states it's "connecting..." for 12 seconds before it will pull up my home page. This also happens when I open a new tab.

Otherwise I am very pleasesed with the new Internet Explorer.

I'm having a problem with my fairly new laptop where it seems to be using more Internet bandwidth than it should. In Safe Mode with networking, it works fine. I'm considering reinstalling Windows but wondering if that's the best option and if so, how to go about it.

My laptop runs Windows 7 and when it's in normal mode, connected our wireless Internet connection, it seems to slow the connection down considerably for the other two devices on the network (my phone and my flatmate's laptop). We've just been testing it in various combinations and the connection works normally when my laptop is off, but it also works fine and at a good speed when my laptop is in Safe Mode with networking. I'm not sure what's slowing it down - I have Norton and have run a scan as well as the Power Eraser tool, and neither of them picked up anything, but I'm concerned I might have a virus.

I'm not really sure what to do next, but I guess I might have to try reinstalling Windows.

I'd be really grateful for any suggestions of what the problem might be - and if you think I should reinstall Windows, if you have any suggestions for guides to doing that. I haven't reinstalled Windows before, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing and was planning to just Google 'windows 7 reinstall' or what have you.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Internet slow, but fast in safe mode - reinstall Windows?

I would uninstall...then reinstall...the driver for the wireless LAN.

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Opening post:Over the past time my Internet has been slowed down because of internet adverts/pop ups. The problem is that these adverts/pop ups are also open even when I do not have any browsers open, etc., so I cannot simply close them or whatever. By opening the resource monitor, it shows three major demanding adverts/pop ups/virus/whatever you want to call it (the amount varies, though, from 1 to 3), and they're all called "compatibilitycheck.exe". I have tried ending the process, the process tree (in English, I think) and deactiviting the process, but after a few minutes they all pop back up again anyway. As a result, and this being the only thing to my knowledge to somewhat temporarily fight it, I am not i.e. able to play games or hang out in a teamspeak due to a jumping ping.Important notes:- My Internet is fine; the adverts/pop ups/etc. are the problem; I've tested the connection through other pcs in the house.- I cannot use any anti-virus software/programmes because I am using a school laptop and have limited access. - I cannot install another anti-virus software/programme to clean my laptop because of various reasons that need not be mentioned.- If of any help, the current anti-virus software/programme is called "System Center Endpoint Protection".Any help is appreciated, and I'll try to answer any additional questions that you might have. Thanks already in advance,RhenciusEdit: Topic moved from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

These are my laptop specs:

AMD Ahtlon 64 x2 Dual-Core Processor TK-55 1.80 Ghz
Ram: 1GB
32-bit

When I boot up from the shutdown position it takes 1minute and change to boot up to desk top fully. Once its done, it takes Internet explorer to open to home page approx 45 seconds. I think this way to slow for what the specs are.

Can anyone help me make this boot faster or operate faster, seems to really slow IMO

Thanks

Answer:Slow boot up and slow opening pages....

It isn't ever going to be lightning speed until you upgrade your RAM to 2 GIG. But, if you want to get the performance back to where it was when you first got the computer follow these steps.

1)Run Anti Virus scan (as thorough as you can make it)
2)Run Spyware removal (like Spybot S&D)
3)Run disk cleanup
4)Run disk defrag
5)Run disk check (click both boxes then you will have to reboot for it to start)

See if that helps...

I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide. I am running Windows XP - SP3. The system has slowed a lot and Internet Explorer keeps opening multiple windows on it's own. I receive a message at startup on a black screen " Invalid boot.ini" It continues to say it is booting from and it flashes off the screen before I can read it. I ran DDS and have included the two files it produced. When I attempt to run Gmer my system, or the program itself, locks up. After clicking on the GMER.exe file, it loads and then automatically begins a scan of /system then becomes "unresponsive". Right... So I've got some problems...
-It started just a while ago when I suddenly started getting all of these pop-ups. One of the appeared to be a virus-scanner advising me to buy or download it. I didn't really heed that one.
-Right after that, my own computer started giving me messages saying 'you're computer is infected'. That, and the machine itself started crackling like some sort of coffee machine or something. When I clicked on the message balloon I told you about earlier, I got the same popup.
-A curious thing that has happened also: I just restarted the computer, and it went REAAAALLLY slow.
-Another curious thing: my computer has suddenly decided to get a mind of its own, it appears. At random moments, it opens up random maps (usually my documents).
-I can't do anything on the internet anymore. All websites I choose to visit, just don't appear. It appears as thought they are blocked somehow. The browsers do say they're "done loading the webpage", but all I get is a white screen. And in the case of internet explorer, a message saying the program doesn't respond -_-'. I actually have to get help on my sister's computer XD
-The final, and most troubling thing of all: I just attempted to restart the computer, and I don't get anything done anymore. When I click on my icon in the startup screen, the 'startup sequence' begins, I can see my wallpaper and all, and then it completely stops... N... Read more

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

I have an old Compaq laptop. 256 RAM (I know I need to upgrade).

I removed AVG and installed AVAST.

Even before removing AVG and installing AVAST I have noticed that starting up the internet, whether its IE or Firefox, is very slow. It takes about an hour for it to get started, but once it gets started its' fine.

I recently ran the Malware Removal process and had the logs read which came up clean.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this may be happening?

Answer:Slow start for internet

is it only opening up a browser that takes a long time or is it all programs?

Lets make sure there is not some little problem that can be solved right away.

Go to internet icon, right click then to to trouble shoot.

then

Go to device manager and see if it is a driver problem

then

go to search type cmd then type ipconfig and post it here.

Do one at a time, if your problem is solved just come back and let us know the results

Hello,

I have recently had to whipe my computer due to a virus. I have also installed new RAM & for the last 2/3 months it has been working really well. I have edited the startup menue in msconfig so that the computer doesn't load up too many un-needed things when it boots. However, I think I must have turned something off that I shouldn't have.
Thw computer boots fine, but when I open Internet Explorer the page stays blank for 1/2mins until a small bubble pops up from the bottom right saying my computer may be at risk, windows firewall is not turned on, click here to solve the problem. The bubble never stays open for longer than a second & the internet opens my home page (google).
I have checked & my firewall is turned on! Any ideas how to solve this problem??
Thank you,

Lee.

Also, when right clicking a drive icon or a folder to select properties, the menu takes ages to appear. These two events seem to be related - any clues on rectrifying this irritating problem?

Hello southflgirl,We need to create a Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) Log Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from one of the links below and save to your Desktop. Primary Mirror Secondary Mirror DSS will do the following: 1. Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista. 2. Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives. 3. Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review. 4. Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using Deckard's System Scanner. 1. Close all applications and windows. 2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts. 3. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious. 4. When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad: main.txt <-- Will be maximized extra.txt <-- Will be minimized 5. If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. 6. Please copy (<Control>+C) and paste (<Control>+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. Hi, I am hoping someone can help me.  My computer starts kind of slow, and I feel like it is running a little slow also.  I thought it would be a good idea to un-check some of the start-up things after going into misconfig, but I do not know what any of the items are.  Is there an easy way to make my computer start faster.  Also, when I am on the computer, I hear the tower making noise like it is doing something, as though there was some kind of background process going on that I don't know about.  I am running McAfee and I am pretty sure I do not have any kind of virus.  Please help.

Answer:start slow, runs slow and makes noise when I am simply typing on computer

Oh Yeah, I am running windows XP that came with the computer a year ago when I bought it.  It has an 80 gig hard drive and I think 1 gig of memory.  Thanks in advance to anyone's response.

This is a strange problem.
Whenever I turn on my Vista: Home Premium laptop, after everything loads, I open up my browser (Internet Explorer or Google Chrome or Firefox)
I have to wait a minute for the webpage to load...
After that, everything runs smoothly.
I got a window registry software but it didnt fix it.
Antivirus scan shows no virus or spyware or anything.
What could be the cause of this?
It's an annoying problem.

Really hope you guys can help. I have a high-speed connection that's running at the speed of dial-up. I have McAfee Virus scanning, which has proved useless. This started about a -week ago when my PC shut down with no warning, and since then, it takes about 8-10 minutes to completely load up, and another 6-8 minutes for my internet connection to boot up.

Here's a copy of my HJT log. Thanks in advance.

Hi everybody...first post here...I've heard you guys do great work.

I run Windows Vista on a Dell Inspiron 1420. I use Firefox mainly and rarely Internet Explorer.

I was browsing around for an article on the late Len Bias when I clicked on a site that created a pop up. I don't remember what the pop up said exactly, something about Windows must run a scan on your computer...but I know it was a Firefox window and not from my virus scanner, McAfee, which I haven't used in a while since the subscription expired. I tried to close the Firefox window but another popped up, so I Task Manager'd it away by killing the Firefox.exe process. I started up Firefox again and the same window popped up, so I killed the process again. I started Firefox for a third time, and it seemed to hang for a while until I clicked Firefox again, then my normal Google home page loaded. Internet Explorer seems to be fine and does not have any of these slowdowns. I restarted my computer and got the same Firefox slowdown.

On my old computer I got a Google redirect virus so I immediately checked the Google search listings and found that I wasn't being redirected anywhere. I used Internet Explorer to download Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Spybot only mentioned random ad cookies, and Malwarebytes recorded nothing unusual.

I may or may not have a problem, I wanted to come on here to be sure of it. I appreciate the help.

Answer:Not sure if I'm infected...internet slow to start up

Slowness and performance issues as you describe are not uncommon. If you're not finding any malware, please refer to Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware. There are reasons for slowness and poor performance besides malware - i.e. disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, too many browser Add-ons (toolbars), not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential.

Answer:Slow Internet Start-up; Possible Virus

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I NEVER had issues with my computer until I linked up to a server at my work, and started to use outlook on it. I started having major issues with outlook, it kept freezing, etc. That's when I first had issues. My boss paid for someone to look at it and have it fixed, and they said they had to re-install windows because there was some type of infetion that destroyed some of my files. I got it back, it worked well for a few weeks, and then started to act weird again, but this time it was with the internet. It happens with any program, explorer or netscape. I was running a few scans a week, and it started out of the blue.

Here is the problem..............

As soon as i open internet explorer it pops up but it takes about two minutes before i can start to surf the internet. I guess i got a virus but dont know how to fix it. I've installed Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE both seem to scan and find some cookie viruses but after i clean them and start all over it says that there are no viruses found. Yet when i start up a new window for the internet it still takes two minutes before i can surf. Once i can surf everything seems to be in working order. Whats wrong???????????????

I just did a clean install of XP SP3 with all windows updates.
Everything was running good.

I installed AVG 8.5 (using /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch). I also unchecked linkscanner during custom install and dl'd latest updates.
Everything was still running good.

I installed Spybot S&D 1.62 (no teatimer) and updated it.
Im thinking this is where my troubles started because I read somewhere that S&D has issues with IE8 but I dont know for sure because I installed Adobe Reader 910(the 25.5 MB version) immediately after from a CD so I didnt use IE after installing S&D. Adobe Reader prompted me to install updates and I did. This is when I noticed the slow down with IE. It takes about 30 seconds for IE to open and then another 10 seconds to get to Google. Once it opens everything runs fine.

I uninstalled Adobe Reader. No change.
I uninstalled Spybot S&D. No Change.
I uninstalled AVG. No Change.
I have no restore points because I usually turn them off until I get everything installed the way I want it then I defrag and if I remember, turn it back on.

I dont have a problem reformatting again but I dont want to screw it up again.

Answer:Internet Explorer very slow to start

Welcome to Major Geeks!

I see that you have IE 8 and also downloaded Spybot and uninstalled the last one. IE 8 has an issue with the immunization of Spybot and therefore should only be used without immunization. Read it here: http://groups.google.com/group/micr..._frm/thread/3ef37656ce18f036/579478566ac1ee9b

Sometimes IE 8 slows down a computer while with others it doesn't. It's difficult to say why as every system is different.

See if, when you uninstall IE 8, things will improve. Here are some links/guides as how to remove IE 8.

I have Norton Antivirus installed, which challenged the above TSG SysInfo download, but I downloaded this utility anyway. Also, in addition to the above problems, my Task Manager often shows 100% CPU usage, which causes my computer to freeze and hang often. I have run Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, ran Window Defender full scans, ran my default Norton Antivirus full scan. My My Computer program shows many red circles with white crosses and yellow triangles with black exclamation points enclosed.

I think my computer is loaded down with a lot of unnecessary junk, infected junk, and I do not know what a lot of that junk is, since the short-hand codes are not very descriptive. I need to know what processes are safe and necessary and what ones I can uninstall without harming other processes.

Thank you for your time and help. I sure do need it. S-Pie

Hi there, please can you help?
I realize this BSOD might be a commonly reported problem but the issues here seem not to have been addressed specifically by other threads so I hope I haven't opened a new thread unnecessarily. Anyhow, here goes...
Various pc problems have arisen since coming home from holiday last week:

Background: 2 months ago: installed samsung SSD to run a new install of Win 7 64bit - on Asus P5NE-SLI with newly installed AHCI controller card. Successful after some troubleshooting; ran fine for several weeks.

PC left for 2 weeks while on holiday: on return a few days ago pc had problems on start-up: blank screen; no/slow start-up then BSOD attached.
The problem now is specifically a start-up issue: very slow to boot windows; if I hit F8 or del then BIOS loads very slowly, if at all; windows loads but freezes part way through. It DOES eventually load but it doesn't seem stable: yesterday the pc restarted unprompted.
The clock time was incorrect by about 20minutes when I got home from holiday (cmos battery?)

So far, I have (in chronological order)...
cleaned out dust, checked for shorts and loose wires
run Prime95 stress tests: seems OK - no crashes; Speed Fan recorded CPU temps of >50C before I closed the program. On idle CPU is now 37C; GPU 47C
memtest run overnight: 7 passes no errors;
updated GPU driver; run Furmark GPU stress test: all fine!
searched for other driver updates - none required (at least through windows)
run Sams... Read more

Answer:Slow start-up; crawls into BIOS setup; then slow to load windows

The problem is with your usb hub, or quite possibly a usb device that is plugged into it.
The fault is clearly sourced in the usb system though.
You may try updating your chipset drivers.
try rebooting with nothing plugged in but mouse and kb.

Hi All

Recently my pc has been acting up. On start up i get missing .dll error messages, alot of pop ups and my upload speed is really slow. Download speed is 9700 kbps but my upload speed is only 20kbps.

I tried ad-aware to remove bad files but that did not do anything.

Below is my HijackThis log
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Slow upload speed, missing .dll files, slow start up

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.

TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.

A little while ago I put a new 1TB hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N5050 to replace the old 500GB one. I used the Windows backup program on the computer and the information on the Windows website. I transferred the system image to a backup hard drive, then installed it onto the new hard drive. I've tried a disc cleanup, defragmenting the hard drive, and I've run all the diagnostics that Windows has and still this thing is SLOW!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, my computer has an Intel Core I3 processor. I still have the old hard drive with everything still on it and I still have the system image on the backup hard drive. Please if anyone can help, I would GREATLY appreciate it, this thing is driving me nuts (My OLD Inspiron 1420 with a Core2 Duo processor runs circles around my N5050!)

My Windows XP computer has slowed down within the past month or so. The computer, an eMachines T6528 Athlon 64 3500+ with 512 mb ram which is shared, while certainly not a power burner, always started quickly and was quick to get to web sites. I use it mainly for email (Outlook Express) and browsing the internet (IE7). I have defragged the C: drive and cleaned out any unused applications - no help. Since my Trend Micro Internet Security subscription was expiring and since the computer was already really slow I changed security to a CA Suite provided by my ISP. That did nothing for the speed.

It starts very slowly, opens programs very slowly, and takes forever to load a web page.

The following HJT log follows, as does a start-up list. Please make this machine run faster.

Hi peeps,

My computer runs fast when I start up, but after a period of using different programs it begins to slow down until the stage where I go to reboot, but it takes about 5 minutes to close everything down, and needs the help of asking 'Do you want to end this app now?'

I've scanned for viruses, spyware and cleaned the registry using Kaspersky AV, Ewido, Windows Defender and TweakNow RegCleaner, but it hasn't made much of a difference.

I think that it may be having problems freeing up RAM after I have used it and so performance deteriates over time. ALthough the task manager doesn't reflect this and the virtual memory is set to system managed.

Can anyone offer any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance
Pete
