Typing accented characters in Linux

Question: Typing accented characters in Linux

Hi. I use gedit as editor in my Linux systems (SUSE and Fedora); there I find that I can't type in accented characters like I used to do in Windows.

In the text editor in Windows, even using an English keyboard configuration, I could type in accented characters by entering a combination of Alt+<ASCIIcode>, for example Alt+130 would type in the accented 'e' character; this sequence doesn't work in Linux.

Any suggestions on how to solve the problem ?

Thnx

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

I am currently facing a really annoying problem.

I'm taking Spanish 003 this semester, and most of our work is done online or must be typed. I'm used to using the ALT+#### codes on my desktop PC, but this laptop keyboard is a completely different animal, and it's really wearing on my nerves.

The first problem is that if I use Fn+Alt to achieve the same thing with the number pad, it'll do the functions for both the accented character and the arrow key. For instance, if I want to type out the word for 'lesson', it appears as 'lecc?i', and in any browser, it'll completely screw things up because Alt+1 on the number pad with the num lock off is the left arrow key, and that'll back it up a page. Switching the number lock on and off is not practical, since that's like 8 keystrokes per accented character.

Anyone know a freeware program that'll aid in the input of accented characters?

Answer:Accented characters on a laptop

This one is not free, but does have a 30 day free trial. I liked it enough to spend 20 dollars.
Good Luck!

I create batch files to rename many files at a time
they work ok but whenever i try to rename a file with an accented character
i.e. the following line

ren "c:\expresión\méxico.txt" "mexico-file.txt"

produces the following error

"File Not Found" even though I'm pretty sure the file is there

Answer:Batch file to rename accented characters

Welcome to TSG!

The Command Prompt uses a different codepage (list of characters) than Windows does, so the characters don't match. The accented é typed into a batch file in notepad is not the same character that the Command Prompt sees. Dir shows the é but when run in a batch file it doesn't match.
To work, you need to change the codepage in your batch file.
The Command Prompt uses codepage 437 usually (type Chcp at the prompt to see which is being used), Windows uses 1252 for Latin based languages in most locales.
This will save the current codepage, change it, rename the file, then change it back. You can also make an entry in the registry so the Command Prompt will always open using the 1252 codepage if needed.
Code:
For /F "Tokens=2 Delims=:" %%I In ('Chcp ') Do Set /A _CurCP=%%I
Chcp 1252
ren "c:\expresión\méxico.txt" "mexico-file.txt"
Chcp %_CurCP%

When I receive some french emails, each accented letter is instead replaced by a white question mark inside a black diamond (). This happens only with some incoming messages. Here is some data from the email header for one such message:

X-Mailer: AtMail 1.02
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"

From what I've read, this is likely due to improper encoding by the mail program used to send the message, is that correct? Can this be rectified on my end?

With the message displayed, if I go to Other Actions -> Encoding and change the encoding from Unicode to Western European, the question marks are replaced by "é".

Thank you in advance for any help!

Answer:Accented characters = white ?'s in black diamonds in some i/c messages

The problem is you are not using the same character set as the sender.

If there's no equivalent for the code point they're trying to represent in the encoding you're trying to represent it in, you usually get a little question mark: ? or .

GEWB

Hello Everyone!
I have a problem with my brand new L20 missing out a lot of characters when I am typing. After searching around the forums, it seems that a few people are also having this problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in fixing this problem yet.

As far as I know, the problem only seems to be in WinXP, (I dual-boot with Linux Slackware 10.2 and don't notice the problem there) and I *think* it might have something to do with the internet. I say this because it is only really noticable for me when I am online, writing emails etc... (Writing to this forum takes a lot of error correcting) :)

Has anyone else been able to isolate when this problem is at its worse?

Also, is it possible to group together all the people who are having this same problem into one thread? I think there are about 3 separate threads where people have mentioned this problem, it would be nice to get everyone together to see if we can fix this.

I brought this notebook for programming, and as you can imagine I dare not try try any coding while this is happening, as it would cause toooooo many problems :)
So please, any help, hints, tips, advice or solutions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Answer:Typing several characters with one keystroke

Most browsers have the ability to remember or in some cases predict the username and password of a site you are trying to log in to.

If you tell me which browser you are using will point you to the relevant tutorial on how to set it up.

Also having your password mapped to a key on your keyboard is not a good idea in terms of security.

If you are still interested in mapping multiple letters or words to a single key it may be worth looking at Keyboard Layout Manager - Keyboard Editor Window (I'm not 100% sure it will let you assign multiple characters to one key but I think it can)

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

Is there a way to fix this myself or would I have to take my PC into a repair store? Or have to replace my keyboard entirely?

I have found that my Yoga 900 will regularly insert two characters when I have only hit a key once. Yes, it can be virus. Did you made any changes on the PC recently?

I have a brand new Satellite C50-A-1CK which is perfect for my needs EXCEPT I continually get double characters appearing on screen when typing which is:
A. VERY frustrating
B. Wasting a lot of time as I have to keep correcting words to remove the duplicate characters.

Please does anyone know of a fix for this? It can affect any key on the keyboard and it doesn't matter if I type slow or quick, press the keys firmly or as light as possible.

Have checked for firmware updates but none available.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I hope that someone can help you and me on this!

I have used other machines for years, I am a reasonably competent typist but have suffered the same problem on my Satellite C850 and it drives me mad.

Also the ease with which using the touchpad to move the cursor about results in the machine selecting the settings sidebar for Windows 8 by mistake.

I have tried changing the keyboard sensitivity within windows but this does not seem to help - just slows the keyboard right down.

Really frustrating

Windows Vista Home version: HP SR 2163WM computer. This happens randomly whenever I'm typing. Might be in Word or during this message (just happened when I was typing "during"). Suddenly the cursor is gone, no letters are appearing, etc. This isn't the buffer just overloading, the cursor just disappears and I can't type. It's like it jumps off the page, but it's very irritating (just happened again on "like").

Hi, hoping someone here can help me...

Toshiba Satellite A60-106 running Windows XP is missing characters when I type. If I type very very slowly then every key works fine. At normal typing speed numerous letters are dropped. This happens in every application and does not seem load-dependent. The key repeat rate is also slower than it should be (I know how to set this; the problem is not with the setting but with the fact that the setting is not being honoured or recognised properly).

Virus/spyware scan reports clean. The problem began suddenly for no apparent reason and does not seem to be associated with any hardware or software changes. Tried starting in safe mode, tried disabling all non-essential services/startup progams via msconfg but to no avail; problem still there.

Laptop has historically suffered badly from overheating, but this problem is not obviously related as it's the same whether the machine is hot or cold.

Any ideas?

Answer:Re: Satellite A60-106 - Dropping characters when typing

Have you installed drivers for an external Keyboard or Mouse? (for example Logitech or Microsoft)

Suddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.

For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!

So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.

I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.

I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.

Can anybody help?
Thanks
Henry

I'm not that familiar with Windows Mail but suspect that it is seeing your character combination as a request for a smiley. You may be able to point to the symbol, right click and see if there is a 'remove smiley' option. Failing that, try using square or curly brackets ([ or {) as a work around.

When I create a basic table in Ms Powerpoint 2003 with 2 colums/2 rows, some letters are sometimes spaced properly and sometimes not:

For ie, the word "Settlement" in the attached powerpoint document -> The 1st time Settlement is typed, there is no issue
at all. But the 2nd time it is typed, the letter <t> and the letter <l> are squizzed together. Then the 3rd time it is typed, it is fine. Same issue occurs with other words (for ie the word <test> may be fine the 1st time it is typed, then you type it a 2nd time, you get that issue of the letters <s> and <t> squizzed together.

See the attachments (they are the screenshots of the issue)

Troubleshoot:

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.

Answer:Typing any character now produces floating menu of chinese characters

Solved......I went to Control Panel > Languages and saw Chinese had appeared after my default English. No idea why, it just had. So I highlighted and pressed the option to Remove.

Machine approaching three years old and not continually used. A couple of weeks ago, it started missing characters when typing or it will type two characters and then highlight them so when you type again the first two characters are gone. Does this on both the on screen and laptop keyboard. Tried an external keyboard and it too acted the same way.
Here's what I've done - run diagnostics (no issues), downloaded and installed most recent BIOS, chipset, video and all other drivers. Have also in Device Manager deleted keyboards and rebooted with no change. All Windows 10 updates are installed.
Most of the time I have it plugged in and charge set to only charge when battery is approaching low.
Have not removed the battery and keeping it as a last option.
Any ideas?

For some reason, there always seem to be a second delay on the keys on the keyboard, including the numeric keypad. Many times, either a character was skipped or the character showed up twice.
Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.

When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.
I am very careful with the laptop as I am sure there was no spill.

Any comment is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi

Try a BIOS update.
I read here in the forum that this solved the keyboard issue similar to yours.

Hi,
As stated above in the questionnaire, my system was sluggish and I ran my PCMatic scan which would stop running about 40% through the scan. I ran Malwarebytes (free) with no issues found. Removed PCMatic and installed AVG (free) which found some issues and cleaned them up but performace wasn't improved much. My keyboard then began to act quirky by characters not appearing or the cursor jumping around or nothing will happen but the "system busy wheel" pops up for a few seconds before characters appear on the screen.

I came back to you guys because TwinHeadedEagle was so effective at helping me with my desktop 18 mos ago that I was hoping for help.

Thanks, regards and please advise if I can once again get some assistance,
Sandy Lanz

Answer:Strange behavior like typing & no characters appear, cursor jumps randomly

Hello,
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. (FYI: The Onscreen Keyboard just works fine) A few example stuff which I get when I press the keys: CAPS Lock: WX (When I press Caps lock key it types WX along with it so the pattern goes like this: WXwxWXwxWXwx and so on if you keep pressing caps lock)q: When I press q its types a tab with qwm: its types yum instead of mw: works like caps lock key. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. The problem seems to be with t... Read more

hi bijoy3d,

Welcome to the Forums.

What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

Hi everybody! Hopefully someone can help me out. I need to know how to type accented letters, as in foreign language typing.

I take my Dell back and forth between college and home; I have an Aptiva PC at home, and I know how to create accented letters on it, but it involves using the Alt key and the keypad to the right of the regular keyboard.

Any ideas on how to make accented letters on a Dell? There is no keypad to the right of the regular letters, only the numbers above the letters. Obviously to create a ~(tilde), I'd press the Shift key to get to that function. I'm at a loss as to how to type a letter with that already above it, plus other accent marks.

Please help if possible!

Thanks!

Answer:How to type accented words

I assume that your Inspiron has a normal US-layout keyboard in which case there is an easy solution. The easiest way to type accented characters regularly is to change your keyboard layout through Windows and in your case, the one you are looking for is "US-International".
You may change your keyboard layout in Control Panel, Regional and Language Options. Go to 'Languages'  tab and click on 'Details' button.  Click Add, to add additional languages and make sure you select 'United States- International' keyboard layout. Alternatively you may add the keyboard to your main typing language (English) without adding additional languages if you want to use US International keyboard all the time and type in different languages without switching language/keyboard layout back and forth all the time.
The beauty of the US International kb layout is that it does not really disturb typing in English in addition of providing access to various accented and special characters. It also respects fully the keyboard legends. The main difference is 5 keys that become 'dead' keys. These are ~ (tilde), "(double-quote), '(single-quote), `(grave accent) and ^ ( circumflex accent). Basically you type one of these characters before the letter that should receive an accent. When you hit the accent key, nothing appears on the screen. The accent will only appear once you type the character after. This assuming that the letter in question can indeed ... Read more

any other time I type the ? it comes out right, not an accented French E. This only happens when I am typing in Facebook.

Answer:when I am in facebook and type the ? it comes up accented E

First off, I'd like to tell you that not only the French use the character "é" or "è". Lots of other Latin-based languages use it.The best advice to you would be to check your keyboard settings in the Windows Control Panel and check if they're set for your language. Some keyboards have different layouts and this might've caused the problem.Seeing as this only happens in Facebook, you could also check Facebook's keyboard and localization settings.

I am running Windows XP. The wordprocessor that came bundled with the computer is Microsoft Works. I need to be able to print accented vowels and the letter N with the tilde (~) for my Spanish class. I could do this in Word by pressing Alt + the vowel. This does not work in the Windows Works wordprocessor. I know Alt + the appropriate numbers (4 of them) will give the desired result, but I am using a laptop which does not have a separate numbers pad, so to get an accented vowel requires 7 keystrokes (Fn+Numlock+Alt+the 4 numbers. Is there an easier way?

Hi:I checked previous posts and didn't find an answer to this question.I need to copy a large accented pdf document into word 2010.I know there are a couple of ways to do this; either via the Win7 character map,or the Wd2010 symbol map. These are fine if you are only dealing with a limited number of accentedcharacters, but if you've got several hundred (rough count) of accentedcharacters is there anything a little more expedient you can do?Thank Yourfa09

Answer:copying accented pdf documents into word 2010

I have done this in Word 2003 and 2010. I just highlight some text (or choose "Select All") in the PDF, and then Edit, Copy, then in Word, choose "Paste". You will have to manage the layout in Word yourself, but the accented characters copy just fine.

I have two excel spreadsheet that I need to compare using vlookup, using case number to do so. The two sheets have case number stored differently, for example, one has the, displayed as 2012DT00001 or 2001CM00012 and the other sheet displays them as 2012DT1 or 2001CM12. Obviously, they are the same record but when using vlookup to compare the record and bring over information that is on one and not the other it does not work well. I have tried using vlookup to compare and look for approximate matches (TRUE). However, when I look at a sampling of the information it misses 80% of the records. At this point, I am thinking that the vlookup function is missing those records as a result of the two case numbers being different as a result of the unneeded zeros in the one. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:How can i edit characters within a string of characters?

Here are two ways to do it:With your data in Column A:
A B
1) 2012DT00001 2012DT1
2) 2001CM00012 2001CM12
In cell B1 enter the formula: =LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5))Drag down as needed. You can now use Column B in your =VLOOKUP() something along the lines of:=VLOOKUP(B1,Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The second way is to use the formula directly in your =VLOOKUP() which eliminates the need for column BSomething like:=VLOOKUP(LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)),Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The trick is in the: VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)) section, it takes the last five characters of your text string, IE 00001 or 00012and converts them from TEXT to a NUMBER, and since Excel strips out any leading zeros in a number you end up with your required digit.See how that works for you.MIKEhttp://www.skeptic.com/

I have had this problem for nearly a month. When I type anywhere in IE it does this: "the quick rownfx jumped overthe lazy dg". It works fine in Firefox (but I dont like it) and works fine in Notepad or Wordpad etc. Here is what I have done so far.

Replaced Keyboard. (Gates you owe me $15.)
Gone though the "Add-ons" one by one.
Uninstalled Google Earth.
Uninstalled Itunes.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support.
They had me turning things on and off and still no solution. (I had plans to go see Jeff Dunham so I had to go. He was great BTW.)

Everything I have searched for has never had a solution.

On my Dell tablet Windows 8.1 when I use the onscreen keyboard the content of the screen shifts upward so what I'm typing isn't covered by the keyboard. My Surface Windows 8.1 doesn't do that which is very inconvenient as I can't see what I'm typing unless turn it sideways into portrait mode. Is there an adjustment for this? I hate the Dell and love the Surface except for this keyboard issue.

I recently updated my laptop (Lenovo Z570) to Windows 10. Now whenever I'm trying to type anything (my password to log onto the computer, within a web browser, in a Word doc, etc) it will all of a sudden act as if I clicked somewhere else and doesn't acknowledge what I'm typing anymore. And then a second or two later it will recognize me typing again and allow me to type. It does not pick up where it left off though, it will just resume from whichever key I'm hitting at that moment. It took me double the length of time just to type this paragraph because it keeps stopping every few seconds.

I type a few words in any program and then my Tecra A11 stops typing and there is no cursor or responsiveness until I click on the page I was typing on, reposition the cursor and I can then start typing again.

It's taken me several "clicks" to get this amount of text typed and this is driving me crazy. I can't seem to find why it is doing it.

Have you any ideas please?

I have a T42 coming my way. For my plans with this system, I can eliminate needing a spare hdd if I can simply run the linux VMWare w/ a Windows XP or Server 2003 image.

Right now, my plans were to be running XP Pro w/ VMWare XP/2003 image, and doing most of my work in the VMWare image(running FTP tasks, etc.) on the 40gb it comes with, and use a 20 for Ubuntu.
But, if I can run Ubuntu on the 40, and re-use the images I already have set up, I can save myself a lot of time and effort.
Does anyone know if a pre-existing image made on a Windows machine will transfer and operate properly if used in Linux's VMWare?

Answer:Want to move to Ubuntu Linux; do VMWare machines made in Windows work in Linux?

Yes. VM machines created in Windows will work fine in Linux vmware enivronment. And the vice versa is true as well.

Hello.

Devices powered by Linux are increasing day by day, and most of these devices are positioned at the entry or key points of any organization?s network. Misconfigurations and easy to exploit vulnerabilities are commonly leveraged by bad actors. Many of these attacks can be studied by configuring low-interactive Honeypots.

Low-interactive Honeypots can capture the malware scripts and binaries, however analyzing these malware samples are also important. Further, keeping such analysis openly available helps independent researchers to search information of their interest and make useful conclusions.

Detux aims at automating the analysis of Linux samples, by supporting multiple CPU architectures (ARM, MIPS, MIPSEL, x86 and x86-64), and making its result openly available for researchers.

Goal: Dual boot Windows 7 and Linux and have an NTFS partition for both OS.

Problem: When creating Logical Partitions with any Linux partition tool(Gparted, cfdisk) the Linux swap and ext 4 partitions shows up on Windows 7 as primary partitions outside of the Extended partition while the NTFS partition shows up inside the Extended partition as logical drive. Disk management shows 5 primary partitions and 1 logical drive inside an extended partition.(As seen in Disk1.jpg attachment) I'm using MBR.(not UEFI)

I can create the partitions in Windows 7 disk management and choose not to format the two logical partitions used for Linux. I can then use the mkswap and mkfs.ext4 command to format the partitions.(See Disk2.jpg attachment)

Questions:
Why is Windows 7 disk management not showing my partitions correctly when I use a Linux tool to partition the disk? Will this cause any problems with Windows 7? I'm afraid of making Windows 7 unbootable.(although it booted just fine I do plan on using EasyBCD to add an entry to load the grub bootloader for Linux)

If I partition my disk with Windows 7 disk management(as seen in Disk2.jpg) will that cause any problems for Linux?

What is the recommended way to handle this? What are the downsides to each way?

Note: I'm a bit of a linux noob.

OK,
My config is HP G6 1075 SA with W7 Home Premium 64 bit pre-installed. It was working well until last week when I decided to install Debian Linux. I am no N00B to Linux and have installed it probably 100s of times. Debian installed and booted well but Windows BSODed with an error 0x0000225 cannot access drive. I formatted C and attempted to reinstall Windows 7 but it is unable to detect the HDD. I accept terms of license and move on to the point of choosing disks but nothing shows up. (There is an option to choose drivers. Where do I locate them? The HP website isn't helpful and I can't even find my product let aside the drivers)

I have already tried :
1. Partitioning an NTFS file system in Debian. Doesnt show.
2. Deleting a partition in Debian and attempt to see the free space in W7 Installer. Didn't work.
3. Try to do the BIOS setting thing (Change SATA option from AHCI to compatible or something). I could find no such setting in BIOS. The BIOS was severely limited with only option of switching on fan.

What do I do ?
The chipset is Intel HM55 if that helps and harddrive is SATA 5400 rpm 500GB.

Answer:W7 installer doesn't detect SATA after Linux, Linux works smoothly

I haven't even installed linux yet, or tried it on live CD. Currently I have a system running windows xp, ultimately I would like a system with dual OS (linux + windows). I plan to gradually become less dependant on windows, until I only need it for gaming purposes, if that. I have little idea as to how possible or impossible this dream of dual OS is, as I have searched google and the linux.com site for information yielding no definitive answer.

Ideally I would buy another hard drive, and install my chosen distro of linux on this, so that I have XP on one and linux on the other HDD. Can this actually be done? Would this form the basis of a workable dual OS setup? Ubuntu, Kubuntu and madriva are distros that look promising, having been recommended by zegeniestudios.net and gotten good press from Distrowatch.com. I can try before I commit and wish to, using live CD. Is this a no risk way of trying them?

Do all distros of linux require compiling of their kernels in order to achieve greatest effectiveness?

I run a PC I have personally built with an MSI K8 Neo4 motherboard(integrated AC97 sound), AMD 64 3000+ CPU, Belkin wireless network card(is used a lot for internet connection via router), GeForce 6600 graphics card, 450 watt PSU.

I appreciate help on this issue, its fairly urgent, would like to be able to know for certain how to go about switching to linux ASAP.

Answer:LINUX Question: want to install linux on windows xp system + few other questions

Yes, it can be done that way. You can either put it all on one hard drive, which can result in two broken operating systems for beginners, or on two seperate ones. Linux requires 2 partitions, so keep that in mind when setting things up. I've installed Linux both ways; I had to get creative for the 2 OS on 1 setup.

If you install on 2 hard drives, make sure Windows is installed first, then install Linux. If you use the linux boot loader, things should be easier in the end. Be sure to make a boot disk/recovery/emergency disk when prompted in the Linux install.

I had a friend who had a RAID 0 or 1 setup and tried to use a live CD on his computer and it broke his array for some reason. He ended up reinstalling Windows because of it.

It depends on what you plan to do with the OS, in respect to compiling the kernel. If there is a driver you want to add or a modification you wish to make, you may need to recompile.

On the topic of drivers, some distros don't come with wireless drivers for all cards. You might want to look into a wireless driver for your Internet connection before deciding on a distro. Either from Belkin (they might have) or native to the distro. Sound might also require a driver search.

iM GONNA RUN Gentoo and i need to know a good LINUX COMPATIBLE MOBO and linux compatible lan and linux commmpatible MODEM

thanks in advance, anythiong u may know may be useful

Answer:What Is A Good Linux Compatible Socket A Mobo W/ Lan Support In Linux?

I'm not sure myself. There are a few boards that claim to be good with linux that i've seen. I can't recall them at this time. I'm going to be building 2 linux machines soon. I've been wondering the same question but to no avail. I recently purchased a network card for a windows machine i just alterred. The brand is Belkin. In the manual it mentions that it's compatible with LINUX/UNIX.

I haven't tested out the card yet, but if the card seems good/decent in windows, then i'll perhaps try it out in one of the linux machines i build soon. You might want to look into it yourself. Dont know if it really is compatible... but its worth a try... and it only sells for 15 bucks.

Hi there

I usually run a LINUX HOST for testing Windows VM's - but I need to test some new releases of various Linux distros so I've created some VM's --easy enough and running them on a Windows Host.

However I can't attach a USB drive with a Linux file system (XFS) to the VM as the Windows HOST rejects the HDD wanting me to format it !!. There's 2.7 TB of media files on it - I want to test running media server in a VM.

Anybody know how to bypass the Windows nag prompt about the HDD and be able to attach it direct to the VM.

(The other way round is no problem -- never a problem loading NTFS HDD's on to Linux machines -- however the NTFS file system is SLOW compared with XFS -- on USB3 device on Native windows transfer rate of 1 TB of files from fast NTFS HDD to NTFS USB3 device is max 82 Mib/s - average for whole transfer. On same machine with Native Linux and XFS to XFS (using same HDD's and USB 3 port avg speed is 350 mib/s !! -- HUGE difference !!!).

Note I have to have a Windows Host for this --I know I could run Linux VM's from a Linux Host but in this case I do have to use a Windows Host as that will be the destination system at the end of testing.

BTW I'm running VMWARE workstation 12.1 on W10 Pro Host.

Cheers

I watched a video about the guy using Windows subsystem and run full Linux desktop without using remote software. There is no white thing on top. He can switch between Linux and Windows using a keyboard shortcut. Linux desktop is smooth, 60 fps, no lag so it means he don't use remote desktop.

I have been looking into this but i only found tutorials about using install Linux in Windows subsystem and use VNC or other remove desktop softwares which is laggy and have 16-bit color to remote Linux locally.

How did he run Linux desktop directly without remote desktop softwares?

Answer:Windows 10 linux subsystem: Run Linux desktop directly?

Windows Anniversary has the option to run Linux bash commands, It's not as great as it sounds because since it cant access the Windows kernel there are many commands that will not work.

You can install the Bash shell on any edition of Windows 10, including Windows 10 Home. However, it does require a 64-bit version of Windows 10.

With that said if you want to install bash on Windows 10 Anniversary try this tutorial from TenForums.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...e-disable.html

After installing run this command to update Linux
Code:
apt update && apt -y upgrade && apt -y dist-upgrade && apt-get -y autoremove

If you want to go further and use a Linux GUI after installing Bash try this tutorial

Not a direct solution but wouldn't it work if drive was formatted as exFAT instead which can be read or written on Linux (may need to add support).

Perhaps putting a small fat 32 partition on drive so you can... Read more

I am on Linux Mint 17.2 (Cinnamon as DE) (with kernel 4.2.0.18 installed and loaded) and I'm getting this message when trying to add a PPA via the terminal: Cannot add ppa: 'no json object could be decoded'. What is the cause and what is the fix?

Secondly, I think I installe GzDoom correctly) but I get: Something went wrong!
If you haven't installed any Doom IWAD files yet or if GZDoom is unable to locate them, put the files or symlinks to them in '/home/dlf/.config/gzdoom' or start the game with the command 'DOOMWADDIR=/path/to/iwadfiledir gzdoom'. . . . So where do I put the files (IWAD? pk3?) I'd presume something like: /home/dlf/.config/gzdoom. And how could I get Wolfenstein 3d/SOD/Quake working with (G)zdoom. I'm on Linux Mint 17.2 with cinnamon (as the desktop environment) if it matters.

This year Linux , is celebrating its 20th Anniversary.
Watch the Story of Linux to remember - or learn for the first time - how Linux disrupted a market and has begun to change the world.

List of Linux distributions

Linux is arguably the best example of how open-source has attracted a worldwide developer community. It's a group that has made perhaps the most significant contributions to the world's technology infrastructure.

Highlights from the timeline show how much has been achieved:

Do you think the Linux builds will ever be the primary choice of a home user ,when looking for a Operating System ?
Did you tried a Linux build?
Which one?
Can any Linux build face Windows at this point in time?

Answer:Linux at the 20th Anniversary ( Story of Linux )

I love Linux and always have a distro in my dual boot with Win 7. I switch to a new distro about every 6 months and have used many over the years. I think my favorites would have to be. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Backtrack 5 and PCLOS. I am currently dual booting with Linux Mint 10. Not to mention every tech should have a version either on a flash drive, or Live cd or both in their toolkit. Linux comes in handy for fixing Windows all the time...lol. Happy 20th Linux

I have a WindowsXP SP3 that has I have risen after sitting for several years. It would not boot so I fixed that and was told not to mess with it because it was so old. Machine is a Dell Dimension 4700, with Pentium 4 Processor and I think it has 3GB of memory installed. The IE and Microsoft items are hardly legible, way too pale. I have tried several things tweaks to fix this. It does load and run great. Unfortunately I had to install the IOBit Advanced System Care to help me get it up and running. I have been reading about the Linux by a few of you  who seem to greatly favor it. I need an OS that is very easy to setup without my having to spend hours trying to understand what I should do next. Would I be better off doing a clean reinstall of XP or can I get a better/smaller OS. All I do is Webkinz and search. I am really weary of dealing with Window. I got a laptop that has Windows 10 that I am very unhappy with, too slow. Just threw this in FYI. I will be trading it in for a Mac Notebook Pro with 8GB to do my work on using this XP for play, etc. I am open to all suggestions except th trash it. It is too good for that.

Answer:Linux lovers what is the best Linux OS that is as fast as a MAC desktop

While I use Linux full time, it's certainly not a magical solution to a slow PC, the PC is extremely old and even with a lightweight Linux OS it will still be slow.  The OS is only part of the problem, even if you somehow install a magical fast distro, your web browser will still struggle to run well on the weak PC.There are easy to learn and well supported distros out there (Ubuntu is pretty good as it's so widespread meaning there's tonnes of support online) but no matter what you go for it will take some getting used to.If I'm totally honest, if you have a brand new MacBook Pro I can't think of any reason to keep using that Dell, you may be attached to it but it's really out of date and several times less powerful than the mac will be.  The mac will be so fast, I imagine the Dell will feel even slower once you get used to the mac.  If you want more of a desktop experience there is nothing to stop you connecting the MacBook to your monitor, keyboard and mouse and essentially using it like a desktop.  By all means don't trash it and keep it around for tinkering with, but it seems silly to use it when you have a significantly better machine.

Hello -

Several months ago, I decided that I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Linux Mint 17 because I was taking the Free Linux class that was posted about.
I never even finished the class. I decide very early on that Linux is not for me. I want to be able to click an executable and install programs.
I dont want to compile them, etc. It took me over an hour just to get my printer working and that is after I had to manually edit some config file to add the IP address in. TOO MUCH WORK.

I would now like to get rid of linux and reclaim the space for my Windows install. I do not want to have to reinstall or anything like that.
I have a 512 GB SSD and I think it is divided in 1/2. I have a boot menu that starts when I turn on the computer. It allows me to pick Windows, Linux, Recovery mode or MemTest.

Please advise on the steps to perform this.
I would be willing to image the windows partition and clone it to a new 512 SSD and then wipe the original and use it as a data drive.
I can not remember if I have anything stored on the linux portion that I would like to keep.
I haven't used it in so long that I don't think I remember the PW for it. If the clone and reinstall is the best option, please recommend a program to use.
The computer is an HP Elitebook 8560W with and I7, 32 gigs of ram and a dream color panel.
Thanks!

Answer:Dual booting Win Xp and Linux Mint 17. Want Linux gone.

Is it XP or Win7? To get rid of the Linux boot menu use fixmbr command.

https://neosmart.net/wiki/fix-mbr/

Scroll down to the correct OS and follow the instructions.

After that go to disk management in Windows and expand the windows partion to reclaim the Linux partition, assuming Linux is on the second partition of the ssd.

I have SUSE 9.3 Installed on a 19GB partition of a 40GB hard drive. I heard that it is possible to dual boot with Windows with Linux being the first installed OS, but it's complicated. Can anyone tell me if I can pull this off without having to make Windows the first installed OS? Here is how I have my partitions:
hda1=1GB [swap]
hda2=17.8 / [root]

Answer:Linux/Windows dualboot machine with Linux first?

The easiest way: Make hda1 bigger and install Windows there.

You will have to restore GRUB later using the SuSE CD and also create the GRUB menu entry for WIndows..
