250GB Hard Drive detected as 130GB?

Question: 250GB Hard Drive detected as 130GB?

Ok, I just built my own custom computer with a little from my friends. And we got it all running and working now, however Windows XP Pro is only detecting the 250GB as 130GB, and this is even when we "formated," and partitioned with Windows XP Pro.

Its not the Hard drive, because we built 2 of the exact same (1 for me and 1 for my bro) however its happening on both machines.

Any help, without wipping the currect data on them? (We've already transfered the data from our laptops to the new computers with our 5pc network)

Preferred Solution: 250GB Hard Drive detected as 130GB?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: 250GB Hard Drive detected as 130GB?

What kind of hard drives are these? There might be a Bios limitation you need to overcome.

This may be a total noob question, but honestly I didn't have any idea what I should search for to find out if this is a known problem. Here it is:

Just put my new system together and in the BIOS it recognizes the drive for what it is, 250GB, but when I went to install XP, it saw it as 130GB. Is there a known reason for this or am I stuck using half of my drive? It's an SATA drive, does this have anything to do with it?

system specs:

Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Asus A8n-e
XFX 7800GT
2GB Corsair valueselect
250GB SATA2 WD HDD

Answer:XP only sees 130GB of 250GB drive

You need to see about slipstreaming a copy of Service pack 2 into your install CD. That might be a service pack 2 thing.

I have Windows XP and put a 200Gb hard drive in my PC. It could not see all of it, but I was told that with service pack 2 I would be able to see all of it. What do I have to do, as I now have service pack 2 installed, but still only have 130Gb drive

Answer:Can't see more than 130Gb of 200Gb hard drive

I'm no expert, but I think it might be a BIOS setting rather than Windows. On my computer you click "del" at the start of bootup to enter the BIOS. But don't go tinkering around in there if you don't know what you're doing ... it's dangerous!

Hello, I got a Lexicon OMEGA USB recording interface with Cubase LE 4 audio software, it wasn't working so I tried a 100% uninstall, I'm not sure if it is 100% gone or not...

I ran checkdisk/error checker on both hard drives. 2nd hard drive worked fine, which I ran 1st.

Then the C: ran & when I checked the properties, now it's using up 130GB of memory from 32-40GB just before the check disk...
Please help/advise.

Should I just simple reformat the C: from windows? How do I do that?

Can I just copy the 32GB of files while looking in the C: over to the 2nd harddrive right in windows....reformat it then move them back over?

pls. help. my dell dimension 8200 desktop is not detecting i/o magic 250gb external drive. i plug it in to the USB and nothing happens. the device is on, my USB is working with other devices. but when i plug in the external drive nothing happens.

i've tried to get help from the manufacturer but everything that they've told me to do is not working.
- downloaded the drivers and still nothing.

i'm in dire need of assistance.

Answer:i/o magic 250gb external drive - not being detected

You may want to check the drive on another computer because it should just be plug and play.

I guess there's a chance the drive is not partitioned or formated, If you you go to Disk Management does it show the drive? How about in Device Manager, is it listed there or are there any errors showing?

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

i recently bought an internal seagate 250gb hard drive and when i installed it it is only finding 232gb i was wondering how i can access the other 18gbs if that is possible. i have seen the 137gb barrier but not something like this. all help would be appreciated.

Answer:250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated. http://www.vatgia.com/pictures_fullsize/tut1254386189.jpg

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

Hi all, hopefully someone can help?Approx 2 years ago i bought a Medion portable hard drive from my local Aldi. Everything has been fine until today when the connection seems loose. If i connect the hard drive to the cable and plug it into my laptop the hard drive turns on, but the laptop doesn't recognise it, and says its malfunctioned. How do i go about fixing it if at all, and have i lost everything on my portable hard drive. Many thanks,Chris

Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Dom

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,
I have been helping neighbour with their Lenovo-b50-80. It originally came with Windows 8.1 and I have upgraded it to Windows 10 and after a few hiccups is working perfectly.
The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here: http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/specs.asp?ID=1971

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8004679&type=product&id=1155848396138

Thanks so much,
James

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Shamus

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

or
2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

Hi

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thanks

Answer:WD 250GB Portable Hard Drive requesting format

you may need to rename it as for example in her comp that may have been E drive and in mac F drive so drives have gotten mixed up
try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

There is in regards to my SimpleTech portable hard drive and My new Dell Inspiron N7010 17R which has windows 7. It tells me that it can not recognize the device when I plug it into my USB port. It works great in my Dell Inspiron that has windows XP and my Lenovo at work that also runs windows XP. I have tried another laptop at my place of employment that has windows 7 on it and I get the same error message on that machine also. It has to be a conflict with the SimpleTech 250gb and Windows 7.

I'm not sure if the hard drive is failing, its an older IDE drive. I just formatted the drive and disk manager only shows it with 26.9GB and no other unallocated space. Is there any way to reclaim the lost space or is this a typical sign of a drive on its last legs?

I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

Answer:Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect.  There's a free version that makes clones.  Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out.  You don't get recovery disks.   The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive.  So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution.  When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive.  If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

I played with the jumper settings and such, nothin'. Put it in a few other computers, nothin'.

I was just curious, is it something that can be fixed or should I lay it on my desk to hold down some papers?

Windows may have failed to assign it a drive-letter, in which case that drive will only be visible in Disk Management:
Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Disk Management.

From there you can manually assign a drive-letter by right-clicking it's horizontal ribbon and choosing "Change Drive Letter & Paths"

I'm using XP Home installed on an 80 GB.  I then use a Maxtor 250 GB for all my storage almost 1 yr old.  It's atached to an ATA/133 Contoller.  The drive is divided into 4 partitions.  Two at 50 GB's and two at 75 GB's.  It's been working fine until a moth ago.  Now I can only detect the two 50 GB partitions.  I tried re-installing the Contoller software to no avail.  I plug the drive into my CD's position and the reading is still only the two 50 GB partitions.Couldn't find any other posts pertaining quit to this.  I'm wondering if for some reason the driver is failing and I'm running into the common 130 GB limitation and therefore only detecting what the PC is capable of.Any suggestions?ThanksTim

Hey there guys, about six months ago I started receiving an error every few days on my computer on boot, and it was something along the lines of: 'pxe-rom: Check cable connection!'. To fix it I just used my Windows 7 install CD and it was fine, until whenever it'd happen again. Now, just about three days ago an error popped up that said 'Windows has detected a hard disk problem'. The hard drive is a 640 GB Toshiba MK6465GSXN. Anyway, after getting that message I quickly backed up all of my important documents and stuff onto an external HDD. It was also very slow, slower than my computer had ever been. So, I decided to do a clean install since scans with Malwarebytes and AVG detected nothing. And then, once it finished, it popped up the error message again?! I have noticed that the slowness has gone, but I'm not installing any programs in case it does fail. I am wondering that maybe the 'check cable connection' error was telling me something, but I didn't think anything of it. So, does it sound like I need to get a new hard drive?
EDIT: I bought a new hard drive, fixed!

Answer:Windows has detected a hard disk problem. Hard drive failing?

In many cases, that is Windows way of saying your hard drive is in imminent danger of failing. Of course there could be other problems, but windows will usually detect it first. A tutorial that may help is simple to use, but may take a while. Disk Check I would also get the Manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic program to check the drive. You were wise to back up all of your personal information.

Answer:Primary Master hard Disk Error - No hard drive detected

First pull ac power and then press power on button a few times. Then replace ac plug and see if it boots correctly. If not then use bios to see if there is a hard drive. Some have a sort of autodetect selection. If still fails then get the hard drive diagnostic for that brand. Almost every hard drive company offers great software that can run usually from a cd or dvd drive. You boot to the cd.Then maybe I'd go in the computer (after you remove ac and press power button a few times and use esd strap) to re-seat hard drive cables. Look for any wear or damage on the cables. Test the power supply maybe too. A Pit Bull is like a gun you can pet. And there is no safety on it.

I have two WD hard drives with the OS installed on one and the other is for storage. All this started with a hard shut down when the PC froze and then after the restart Windows wouldn't boot at all. It was stuck at the Windows logo for a very long time. Then I checked in BIOS and I noticed the secondary drive was nowhere to be found.

After letting Windows run the automatic repair on the drive the drive showed up in BIOS and I could access two of the three partitions. The third partition threw me an error saying the disk structure is corrupt and unreadable when I tried to open it. In Disk Management the drive showed up as RAW format and healthy. Then I tried to backup whatever I could from the accessible partitions before everything froze.

I rebooted again and right now none of the partitions are visible in Windows and is not detected in BIOS. But in Disk Management it says the Disk 1 is unknown and has to be initialized and asks to initialize with either MBR or GPT partition styles. I've also tried running chkdsk, used EaseUS Recovery and other third party data recovery tools but none of them detect the drive anymore. The drive is however visible on HD Sentinel and it says there are bad sectors and data must be backed up immediately. Does this mean the drive is completely dead? I have over 700GB of invaluable data on it so I don't want to just give up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was laying in bed and heard my computer restart for seemingly no reason. I get up to look at the screen and I get the error "3rd Slave Hard Disk Error" I try to continue but since Ubuntu is installed on the now faulty hard drive, it says error: no such device: - device name - Entering rescue mode - grub rescue>... which I've seen before, it's telling me that it can't find the Ubuntu installation. I have windows as my primary OS on the first hard drive (the one that's still detected) and manually choose windows before the computer starts. I went into BIOS to try and change the boot sequence, which has caused the grub rescue screen before, but the 2nd hard drive is no longer detected. How can I get passed the grub rescue screen? What could of possibly happened to my hard drive in such a seemingly random way? I have a 3rd unused hard drive, am I better off just installing windows on it and starting over? I don't want to lose everything on my 2nd hard drive though.

I tried starting it with the cords plugged into the primary hard drive into the 2nd faulty one, it's spinning but still not detecting it

I have a new E525 that I am trying to use with some external eSATA storage. If I boot the system with the eSATA drive attached, the internal HDD is not found and the system will not boot. I get "Fixed Disk: External Disk 0" on the diagnostic splash screen. If I boot with the eSATA drive turned off, and turn it on once the OS has booted, all is well and both internal and external drives are found.Any ideas? I have looked for a BIOS update but have not been able to find one. I've also been through most of the BIOS settings but can't see anything that looks relevant.

Answer:E525 internal hard drive not detected by BIOS when eSATA drive attached

It appears that this has something to do with the hard drive ordering. When the machine is switched on with the eSATA drive attached, eSATA becomes SATA HDD0 (presumably the internal drive becomes SATA HDD1).The only option to boot from SATA drives on the boot order menu in the BIOS is SATA HDD0, so it never tries to boot from HDD1 (now the internal drive).I can see this is useful if you WANT to boot from the eSATA, but I don't........

Hello thank you for your time, I am experiencing issues with a dell dimension 4100. Well after a few tries i somehow got it to recognize the hard drive upon startup and it tried to format it i think, although as soon as i saw that screen i powered down and now the hard drive is no longer recognized by either computer, even in the bios it says the total memory is 512 mb with it connected to hard drive spot of the original dell. I would really like to get my dell working again but it gives me the error Invalid Boot diskette Insert Boot diskette in A: I do not care for restoring the files on the hard drive they are worthless to me i just want to get my computer working again any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

Answer:Non detected Disk Drive/Hard Drive Need help with dell Dimension 4100

Place OEM Windows CD into the CD or DVD drive and boot off of this disk. If your system doesnt want to boot off the CD or DVD drive go into bios and set the CD or DVD drive as 1rst boot device in boot order. Once you successfully boot off of your optical drive you then can delete the partition on the hard drive, create new partition and reformat, then install clean installation to that hard drive. If you dont have recovery or oem cd available, you will have to buy one.

I recently replaced my hard drive with a SSD and put a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium edition on my laptop. I've had a lot of trouble getting all the drivers to work but fixing the optical drive seems to be giving me the most trouble. I've looked around on this website and on several forums. I've gone into the device manager where the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE entry only appears when I select to see hidden devices, and even then it is not the optical drive that is installed but something to do with my android phone so scanning for hardware changes makes no difference. I have seen tips on going into the registry to delete two files named upperfilters and lowerfilters, neither of which exist in my registry.  The drive can be seen from my BIOS but appears nowhere else. When I insert a disc I can hear and feel it moving so the hardware is still functioning.  When I installed the new hard drive, I did not unplug anything else so I am certain that the drive is just as connected as it was before when it was working properly. Any other suggestions?

Answer:No Hard Drive Detected

1. Replace the ribbon cable in case that's the problem.
2. If you have extra power connectors, replace that in case the one you are using went bad.
3. Remove the hd from the computer, attach it by the USB port to another computer to see if you can see data. If you can, save what you haven't backed up.
4. If the drive is good (you can see data), put it back in the computer and try to repair the mbr.

Hi,

The other night i shut my computer down like normal, then the next day when in turned it on it stayed on the motherboard load up screen for longer than usual.

then the black screen loaded on it, and it said something like:

DMI pool data failed to load,

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER,

im not sure if this is exactly what it said.

I got my friend (who put my pc togther for me) to have a look at it, we tried the vista install disc but the hard drive was no detected.

He then tried it at home with his external connection cable to connect a internal hard drive via usb, however it was still not detected that way.

Does anyone know what could have gone wrong? will it be possible to recover this data?

Hello all,

I've got an issue during post installation. One of my hard drive is never given a drive letter, but it does show up as a possible install drive during setup.

I always have to go into Drive Management and assign that drive a letter (and moving my DVD drive down a letter to keep the letters in order).

Under Drive Management the drive has the Properties (System, Active, Primary Partition), so I'm wondering if that is the issue.

Is there a way to change Drive Properties (if that is the case)?

Thanks

T

Answer:Hard Drive Not Detected

For some reason, maybe to prevent people from messing up their system, Windows sometimes hides the "system" partition. The system partition is the partition that holds the files necessary to boot (which is also why it is set "active"). If your system partition is only 100MB you might as well leave it alone. Do not assign it a drive letter.

In my case Windows XP is on the system drive. but once I assigned it a letter in disk management, all is fine.

Yes. By installing/moving the boot manager to another partition and setting that new partition as active. You could use the bcdboot and diskpart tools for that (both are included in Windows and on the recovery/install discs).

However, when moving it back to the original machine, it doesnt get detected. Before XP boots, it just says NO DISK DETECTED or DISK ERROR or something like that, and ive tried moving the jumper into Master and Cable Select positions, but with no luck. Its not a problem with the cables either, because i have tried more than one...

Not very likely, at least not easily. Try it with another computer before you do anything further. Also try a different USB cable.

If those both fail, you might have some luck breaking open the case and getting at the drive itself and then placing that in an external dock..

I tried everything but still nothing detected. I changed the sata ports but the older one is detected everytime, but the new one doesnt get detected.

I even updates my bios to latest version, please tell me wat is the problem.

My cables are not damaged, can the hard drive be faulty, or i m missing something...

Answer:Second hard drive not detected

the easiest way to detect if the drive is faulty is to simply try it in another machine, if possible. you could also try the new drive connected by itself. SATA drives do not typically have jumpers so they should all be detected at once, but every now and then one may not be properly initialized, so isolating it could do the trick. if all else fails, visit Seagate support and inquire about the problem. it may just be DOA

It takes about 10 minutes or so after boot, then in Device Management, I do a 'Scan for new hardware', and it shows the disk. I don't have the problem when I boot Linus OS.

The drive is a WD2500JB-98GVCO. I have one on primary IDE slave (behind Maxtor w/XP), and another identical on secondary IDE slave (behind ODD). The secondary IDE slave detects at boot.

BIOS doesn't show the missing drive right away either, but it DOES show the other WD on the secondary.

Ideas?

Hi,

Have you verified that the cables from the hard drive to the power supply and motherboard are still properly connected?

Did you install the driver for the controller?

Did you go into computer management and create the partition & format it?

I have two hard drives on my computer. I currently have them daisy chained on a promise ultra 100 tx2 pci card. I was told that it would be better if I connected each hard drive seperately (especially since I have an empty slot), and that would speed up transfer times between the two (using same cable slows transfer speed), first question is this true? Secondly, I went ahead and did so, but my card does not detect the primary hard drive (master) it only detects the second one, but the os is only on the first one, thus my pc does not boot up. I tried changing cables between the hard drives and using new ones, but that still does not work (only 2nd drive is detected). I had to go back to my old set up and that way it works (daisy chained). Any help would be appreciated.

When you change cables around, do you also change switches on HDD for Master, Slave and etc?

Sorry to be a pest again but i started this thread again because i still have to keep going into setup to detect my hard drive every time i start up the computer. I changed the battery as was suggested by a few members in the forum and also made sure it was the 1st boot device. I have left it for a few days because it is getting to me a bit now so if there is any more suggestions on what i can try please let me know.thanks Annie35

I am having Hp Pavilion dv6799ea special edition notebook that came with vista. I am not happy with vista and trying to install xp. The problem is when I try to install XP it says no harddisk found. I assume its the problem with sata drivers.

How can I load the sata drivers so that XP can detect my harddisk for installation? Where can I find the drivers?

Thanks in advance

Ok, so here is the problem. i had my computer on for the whole night. then when i wake up, i see that it is showing NTLDR is not found, press ctrl+alt+delete to restart. I go into my bios and try to find out what the problem is (playing around with the priority booting), and i find out that i am missin a hardrive in my bios. Now, i can only assume because i dont want to believe it, but the problem could be these:
1) Harddrive crashed, its dead
2) wires are unplugged (not likely since i didnt touch it, and i dont think a little fan would unplug the harddrive
3)the hard drive is dirty (also unlikely, i dont know how it would malfunction.

I also had two harddrives in my computer, and the one that crashed had the OS (XP Professional) in it. When i put the xp cd into the computer and attempt to boot/install new operating system, the computer said that it did not detect any harddrive on the computer. i do not know what this means, since my bios listed one harddrive (it used to be two). The HDD that failed was not the RAID type of hdd
can anyone help me out?

umm ok. i just turned the computer back on, and its working... somehow the harddrive wasnt detected, and now it is. can someone tell me why that happened? was it because the hdd was used extensively, and overheated, and just needed to cool down? and if this happs again, how do i use my RAID HDD to install windows? thanks a bunch.

Hi. I've got a 4 month old Dell XPS 420. Suddenly one morning it doesn't start up. Get message "No hard drive detected" Run diaognostic tests. no probs, except no hard drive.
Have opened it up to check all connectors. Fine.
Inserting Vista DVD before startup does nothing.

Rang dell, they just say they'll replace the disk without offering any other help. That's fine, but there is data I NEED off it first.

Funny thing is if you hit F1 to continue after the error istead of doing the setip, or boot menus, the small LCD screen on top of the computer starts with windows slideshow and solitaire. I can play solitaire, but the slide show says I need to access options from control panel. Surely this means something on the hard drive exists?

Please help!

Answer:hard drive isn;t being detected

well....i think it's simple....you should move the jumper...and if that doesn't work ...you should go and change some things in bios.and if this too doesn't work .....i have only one advice for you: change your hdd!!!

Well to start my computer wasn't in good shape for the past year so i decided to make a backup of my files to an old hard drive
the computer detected it and it worked perfectly then the past week my dad send it to his friend to be upgraded so i left my back-up hard drive with me then when the computer came it had a new master hard drive where the operating system was placed then i installed some security programs then installed the hard drive but it did not detect it even the other hard drive on the cable was not detected even changing jumpers and assigning a slave and master still it was not detected i even tried inserting it in the cable with the CD-ROM but still wont detect anything that was connected in the cable with it.

i tried searching on the web for a solution but none works...

i tried searching for a recovery center but there none close to our place

so what should i do to get my files back ?

i got ideas about taking the disk inside and placing it to another hard drive.... but its only an idea

i use windows xp

Hello,

I have a fairly old computer and my hard drive got corrupted so I bought a new hard drive to replace it. The hard drive is brand new. When I replaced it with the old one and booted up the computer, it is not being detected by the bios. The computer just hangs on the start up screen trying to find a master drive. I click F4 to skip but it will not do it. I think went into the BIOS and tried to Auto detect it but again it starts to look for it but just hangs.

Any suggestions? The hard drive is a Seagate 40 GB 7200 IDE.

Thanks

I had an 80 gig hd, now going to a 40 temporarily. I put it in 2 different computers and I get the same message. Not recognizing the hd. How do I set the defaults in the bios? I go into it and I can't really change anything that seems to make a difference.

Answer:Hard Drive 0 not detected

If you have set Autodetect hdd in the BIOS then any modern bios worth its salt should be able to pick it up.
The fact that 2 machines have failed to do so suggests this drive is toast.

Remove / refit power and data connections to the drive. might also be worth swapping cables.
see if the drive is detected in BIOS.

Hii, I need assistance with my seagate backup plus portable drive. The device is not picking up on my computer (windows 10), I've even tried to fix it on the disk management tool, but it still isn't picking up.
Thank you.

Answer:Hard drive not detected.

If Windows doesn?t see your drive at all, it?s possible there?s a hardware issue with your computer?s USB port, a driver problem with your Windwos computer, or you may just have a dead drive. Unplug the drive from your USB port and try plugging it into another USB port on your computer. If the drive still doesn?t show up, maybe the drive itself is bad or the computer is having a problem.

When I boot up my laptop it says that it couldn't find the hard drive or the checking media [failed]. I tried looking into my laptop to see if the hard drive was connected right and it is. When I turn on the laptop it makes this clicking sound which leads me to believe the fan is not working maybe?? This drive has windows 8.1 I have some files that I need that are in there. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Getting to work again? Thank you - Minerva

Earlier today Firefox crashed on my and a blue screen came up with loads of writing followed by a restart. My computer will no longer fully boot - it will get half way through the XP loading screen (with the blue bar thing) and then the blue screen comes up again and another restart. The blue screen doesnt stay up long enough to read it ... sorry.

Anyway, im trying to reinstall Windows but it keeps saying there is no hard drive install when there is. Ive loaded SATA and RAID drivers by pressing F6 but it still doesnt work.

Any ideas what i do?

Cheers in advance

I have a computer using Windows 7 OS, the OS is on an SD drive and I have an HD drive also installed for extra space. The other day when starting up my computer I got an error message that read: ntldr is missing pres ctrl+alt+del to restart. After doing some google searches and trouble shooting I noticed I was getting the following message on a loading screen:

controller bus #00, device #1F, function #02: 06 ports, 02 devices
port -00: Hard Disk, ST1000DM003
port-01: no device detected

At this point I disconnected my HD drive and see this message:

controller bus #00, device #1F, function #02: 06 ports, 02 devices
port -00: no device detected
port-01: no device detected

I understand that it is not finding my SD drive and I tried switching the cables with ones I know work and it still does not find it, so it's not bad cables and must be a problem with my SD drive. Is there anyway to fix this problem or is my SD drive just ****ed?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Hard Drive not being detected

It doesn't look good but I would check if the SSD (it is a Solid State Drive ?) is detected in the Bios. If not then I think it's died but it may still be under warranty which is usually 3 years or more depending on the make and model.
