Question: Inspiron 5558 - 6 Months Old - BROKEN HINGE

I have a 6 month old Inspiron 5558 that won't close properly due to a bad hinge on the right side. Spent an hour with support, only to tell me that this is not covered under warranty, even though there is still another 6 months left under Mfg warranty. The hinge is cracked, which in turn has cracked the cover of the LCD. In order to close the laptop, we have to squeeze the hinge with the screen, and slowly close. From reading through posts, it appears that Dell has ongoing issues with hinges. I totally understand and would expect a two year old device not to be covered, but at 6 months? And a broken hinge is not covered? Anyone have any thoughts?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

Nope. Nothing. I had many calls with support and they still insisted that it's normal wear and tear on the machine. I purchased through Costco, and they tried calling support and received the same answer. Long story short, I will never purchase a Dell device again. Ever.

Before buying laptop, Dell store person told that I will get express service and the person will visit home if there is any issue. But now there is no one to help even when I called 8 times since morning.

I purchased this stupid laptop like stuff in march 2016, I hardly use it for personal purposes, since I have a official laptop. Within 10 months, THE HINGE ON LEFT IS BROKEN, when I try to open it, the screen seems to detach from panel,  I have given to a authorized service centre in bangalore India,  they say it is not covered under warranty,  I have read so many people having similar experience with the laptop model,  seems to be a,  and still they dont want to admit it,  I am planning to go to <legalistic>,  because I have Invested my hard earned money to buy a branded product.  My invoice no is <private data>,  THIS IS MY LAST DELL PRODUCT.

I am so glad to see to see that I am not the only one who has a hinge cover broken as I was beginning to think that I might have accidentally bumped the laptop somewhere (I am extremely cautious electronics user and none of the electronics products I used had physical damage in past.).   As you can see in picture, left side hinge cover is broken which causes the display screen to come off when I try to close the lid.  Getting hold of the customer representative is an ordeal itself but when I finally could get hold of the guy, he told me that this damage is not covered under the one-year warranty and I will have to pay $150/- in order for this laptop to get looked at by dell professional plus have to bear the cost of the new part.
Apart from this problem, touchpad is too sensitive to touch of my palm and cursor goes all over the place when I type. I have tried to change touchpad settings from control panel and uninstall the touchpad drivers but it has not helped.
Overall I think this laptop is of low quality. Now I understand that Inspiron products can’t be compared with Vostro or Latitude products, but this laptop is bad for even Inspiron standards. My four-year-old Inspiron N4110 is way better than this laptop and still working fine. I am sorry to say this but this has been one of the worst products I have ever used.

The left side hinge on my touch enables Inspiron 15 (5558) is broken.  When I opened the device on my desk, it made a cracking sound and the case-lid seemed to seperate from the screen assembly. According to the tag on the bottom, it's under warranty until December 20th this year.  How do I go about getting this repaired?  I can not move the screen at this point.  I have it in an open position, but if I'm very gentle and use many hands, I could get it closed.  Any help would be appreciated.

Question: 5558 broken Hinge.

when opening my computer I heard a crack or popping sound. e  Opened fine but when I closed the left hinge was broken.   The laptop still under warranty.   I  see many comments about  the 5000 series hinges.    I need this repaired.   I am a college student, studying architecture.  I can not send my computer to a warranty center to disappear for a week.   All my projects are on my laptop.   Looking for a service center and I see that people are having issues trying to get the screw that breaks due to design repaired.  
Need a little help with out  too much hassle.

I purchased Dell 5558 last year through eBay. I am a cautious user of digital gadgets. My laptop cover and its hinges are broken because of normal wear and tear. This product is bogus and worst. besides there is no proper service from dell. I think lenovo products are better than Dell at least they provide prompt services and their spare parts are easily available in market in India. I suggest every one not to go for Dell

Another complaint for a broken hinge issue on the 5558 laptop. Of course Dell Service will tell you that there is no known issue for this problem but search the forum and you will find several complaints. Dell is doing nothing about this problem and in my opinion they are definitely side stepping the issue so they do not have to take care of their customers. Dell service claims that the defect is due to "Customer Induced Damage". Dell also claims there is no known issue for this defect so you will have to call the "Out of Warranty" department. The out of warranty department will charge you 160 bucks and take your laptop for 7 to 10 business days. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING for a laptop that is less than six months old and definitely does not have any customer induced damage.

On my laptop, the actual hinge did not break but the laptop cover broke away from the hinge. Obviously the plastic cover mounting pads are not strong enough to handle the repeated torque on the joint when opening the laptop.

I have the Inspiron 5558 laptop with  Warranty up to may 2017.  From the date of purchase I noticed that at the time of lifting the screen the hinges are not comfortable. When I reported  to customer care about the problem they simply said " it is new product after some days you can be comfortable to lift the screen" But now after 5 and half months of being used at the right side big gap is there between the hinge and and the screen. I called customer care they said its not covered  in warranty because its broken due to my negligence and i have to fix it by paying Rs-7000/- . I don't understand why dell is not willing to accept their manufacture fault as my laptop never fell down and i never misused it? I also have heard of the similar problem from my colleagues even.

I   have owned this machine for several months after the first two months  I had to send it back to Dell because after receiving the message AC power wattage cannot be determined and spending several hours on the phone with  Dell they sent me a box and I sent them my computer. They had to replace my mother board (not a good sign on a new computer). Fast forward a few months and clicks (yep the right hinge is clicking) cant see where it is broken but doesn't sound good.  So I am going rounds with customer service no I  did not drop the computer no did not abuse it. I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop. Right hand side LCD panel connector to the base is broken. When I close the LID, part of the hinge coming out from the base. I think hinge screw holes( plastic piece in the base that attaches LCD hinge ) is broken. I attached some images if you are not clear about the situation.Can I fix this by replacing the laptop base cover ?

It is bad enough that Dell makes a product with a defect affecting many of their unuts (bad hinge design/manufacture), but then makes a statement that part is specifically not covered under any of their warranties.

To whom it may concern, I am writing this message to inform of you of my displeasure with one of your products. I purchased a HP Envy M6 in August of 2015 at around $700. Last night I went to open my laptop and I heard a loud snap. The noise that was heard was my hinge breaking as well as it snapping the plastic from the bottom base cover. I have now had three HP laptops and all three broke the same way. After doing some research online I found out that this is a common thing for HP laptops, specifically the Envy models. I even noticed that there was a class action lawsuit against HP for their hinges specifically. I went around to repair shops to get a quote on how much it would to be fix and was quoted from $150-$200.I was shocked at the amount quoted as I already had put a large amount of money into the purchase of the product and the product being relatively new. It is unfair to your consumers to have high priced top of the line products break on them on a regular basis. I am inquiring with your company to see if there is anything you can do to help rectify the situation. If nothing can be done I will stay away from all HP products permanently. Hi.  After looking over some of the post, it looks like hinges are a problem for Lenovo.  My U450P is less than 4 months old and the hinge popped as I was trying to close it one evening last week.  (No I didn't drop it and have only taken out of the house 2-3 times.)  I didn't continue to try and close the lid, because it looked like it was pulling the top corner apart. Anyway after calling support and then driving an hour away to nearest FedEx Express, I got a call today - it will cost me $180 to repair.  Of course I had to close it to put it in the shipping box, and as it closed the broken hinge did pull apart the top slightly.  They consider that accidental damage and assume I dropped it. I was also admonished for not getting the extra warranty coverage.  Shouldn't a computer last more than 3 1/2 months without having to pay for extra warranties!!!  It seems from reading these boards that Lenovo hinges are an issue.  I certainly had no problems with previous laptops. So - am I just stuck, or has anyone found help with their hinge situations. thanks!

I bought my Dell Inspiron 5548 in November 2015. My right hinge is making strange noises and finally it broke off. I want to know how could I get this fixed. I haven't misused it or dropped it at any point of time. since it is not even one complete year, im assuming my laptop is covered under the warranty. probably this is not the first complain Dell is receiving in this model since I saw previous posts complaining of the same problem.

We purchased this laptop Jan. 2015.  It is currently almost out of warranty. We purchased online from Costco. I called Costco Concierge services and they connected me with Dell Warranty Dept.  I explained the issue of the screw popping out and the hinge now being broken. Of course the first thing they asked was if it has ever been dropped. NO! IT HAS NEVER BEEN DROPPED! We cannot open the screen more than a 90 degree angle. In some cases when we do, the computer shuts itself down and reboots.  This is obviously a defect in the hardware and workmanship and design of this laptop. As I just spoke with Dell and they are sending me a box to ship the laptop back in. It will take 7-10 business days to fix.  This is a work computer so of course we cannot be without a computer for that long. We will have to buy another computer to use during this time and then give to another employee once the broken one is fixed. For now, they have not said we need to pay anything to fix it as it is still under its one year warranty. But I will let you know if something else occurs. I am glad this forum is here because I would never have known others have had this problem.  Dell really should recall this product or at least give people new computers when they call with this issue. This is such a hassle.  I will post back on here what the resolution outcome is.  Also, they let me know that if it happens again once it is fixed, it will no longer be under warranty. We ... Also similar case as mine. I am writing a post currently to document it. I suggest you make a complaint at the BBB website as I have already. This will get you some traction with dell's warranty department. But they are very stubborn and refuse to see this damage as a manufacturing defect and insist on calling you a liar by saying it is accidental damage.

This laptop had click sound going on when closing and opening lid. It had this from day one and i assumed it is new laptop and will get fine after few uses. As i used this laptop rarely i did not mind this issue until recently i opened the lid and heard click and found right side corner hinge pop out. Now my laptop is unusable and needs the replacement. I used this laptop with care and am sure this was manufacturing defect. This needs to be replaced for free.
I tried to reach DELL support few times but was put on wait for hours and had to give UP. Now when i call them they say your warranty is expired and you have to pay for this replacement.
I don't buy this . THIS IS MANUFACTURING DEFECT. 100's of users experienced the same. DELL has to OWN responsibility and fix it . This makes CUSTOMERS DAY.
This breaks customer trust on DELL. I see this is getting more and more into Fabric of DELL. So many customers are complaining about DELL 
Please help and fix issues that is your liability and do not penalize customers

The hinge on the left side is separated so I cannot left the screen all the way up. This system is only a couple of years old. What can be done to fix this problem?

I just spent nearly 2 hours today attempting to get my 5558 Inspiron repaired under warranty for a broken right hinge that also screwed up my WiFi. Who do I contact to get this issue covered and cost me 160 dollars?  This is amazing everyone with exactly the same problem on the right hinge, not the left even.
And then to be accused of abusing my machine, when it never actually moves from its location. The only thing I do is open and close the *** lid !  I always had a trust in Dell products and they're quality. Well that's now out the door.

The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. Please give me advice on this one. I am extremely disappointed at this point.

My laptop left side hinge broke down after enquiring I came to know this is not covered in warranty and quotation provided to me for replacement and labour is 630 usd. You can imagine how Dell is making fool of its customer. Dell purchase inferior quality items from China  and when it is broken customer has to bear the price. My laptop is I7 5558 (15 months old) which I bought for around 800 usd and hinge which does not even falls into the category of technical part will cost 630 USD. Whole forum is full of this broken hinge problem . why cant Dell just replace it to all or least if people reach out to support they should replace it free of cost. Highly disappointed with Dell . I always thought Dell laptops are toughest and best in world. Mr Dell will be very happy to see how his company is sourcing inferior products and passing cost on to customer.  Truly amazing Dell way to go ... people will stop using your product one day.

Hi there - I have an Aspire V5 touchscreen - when I went to close the lid, the screen cracked and I spotted that the left hinge has come apart (risen and cracked the screen). Now the laptop wont work (touch screen is flashing, mouse doesnt work - exactly the same issue as the other posts on this forum). I see on this forum and google search that this is fairly common with Acer laptops (going back to 2010) and wondering why this wasnt fixed. Has there been a recall on this, does anyone know?  I see from a google search that HP fixed a design flaw on their laptops to stop this from happening once it was reported, several years ago (2008) (I wish I had known about this problem before I purchased). If you google that you'll get the information. I've only had my laptop a couple of years. I take excellent care of my laptops, and never had this issue. (I dont travel with it, and dont close the lid often - it sits stationary on my desk and is only 2 years old).   I've sent emails out to my friends working in technology this afternoon - and so far no one has ever had this issue although no one has Acer.  Its a huge inconvenience as I use this laptop for work.  So I'm just waiting to hear back from Acer.Any suggestions on getting this fixed or replaced asap?

I recently bought a the 5558, roughly six or eight weeks ago; I have been very disappointed with the performance since day one. I do not use it often at the moment, and only for browsing and Office. 

I've tried all the 'tips' that I found through Google searches, plus Advanced Systemcare 8 to defrag and optimise, plus the Dell System Detect (No issues).
Programs often take a long time to load, if at all, especially Chrome. Downloads are painfully slow (e.g. 15 minutes for a 70kb .doc file) despite speedcheck showing a 4.9MBps rate. Chrome and Firefox both frequently stall and a popup offers me to 'kill' or 'wait' for the page. Also when opening file explorer, it can take fully 5 minutes to 'find' anything - even in near-empty folders. 
Any other ideas? Has anyone else had any similar issues?
The laptop did come preloaded with Windows 10 and I double checked the minimum requirements, there really shouldn't be any issues.

and now i install win8.1 but also keyboard back light doesn't work !! and i haven't  Dell Quickset options in Mobility Center

Hi,

I was bought the above laptop as a present to replace my ancient Inspiron 1525 two weeks ago and since pretty much day one it has been rebooting randomly and displaying "whea_uncorrectable_error".

Machine runs Windows 10 (supplied with) and has not been fiddled with or messed about with in any way. I have updated all recommended Dell drivers including BIOS and Windows is fully up to date. I have not overclocked or adjusted the processor.

I must admit is rather dissapointing on a brand new machine as I really hoped it would just work without any issues and I want to use it for work purposes so it really needs to be reliable.

I suspect a bad battery but I have no history as it's a friend's laptop.
When plugged into the AC adapter, the adapter light comes on, but no indication that anything is charging (no lights on the laptop at all).  If the power button is pressed, with or without the adapter plugged in, the power light and keyboard lights briefly (1 sec), a fan starts to spin, and the system turns off again.
Alternate power adapters have no different effect.

If it's the battery, remove that (or disconnect it), hold the power button for 30 sec. and then plug in the adapter.  Try powering up on AC only.  
If it will, it's the battery.  If it won't, replace the mainboard.

My HDD has failed, can I replace it with an SSD? If so, can I load Windows 7 on the new SSD? The original OS was Windows 8.1

You can clean install Windows 10 Home or Windows 8.1 (Home)... There is no downgrade rights for Windows 8.1 (Home) and Windows 7 has reached end of sales.

I'm trying to install a new 480GB SSD in my Inspiron 5558 (came w/ Windows 10 installed on a 1TB HD). I made a USB recovery drive, swapped the disks, and booted from the recovery drive. Diagnostics finds the new SSD and says its OK. However, when I choose the Recovery option the process stalls at 37% completed and says "Failed to apply image". I have tried this with Secure boot on and off. Dell wants $$ to send me OS media for a clean install. Any suggestions?

The left hinge and the plastic began to separate from eachother, and now its so bad that the fan has apparantly stopped working. Will HP fix this problem? If not, I will definitely be looking at a mac or something that wont break just from average use of a laptop.

I was in Windows 8.1 and this function works normally, but i upgrade to Windows 10 and doesn't work anymore. I try Keyboard Fn, Mobility Center and bios Function don't exist in my model for change this (I use latest BIOS version for my model).What I do in this case ?

Try downgrade the BIOS and check and then update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1OGE9EY and reinstall the chipset drivers from the same site. 
Restart and press f2 key on startup to enter BIOS - check if the backlit works in BIOS environment.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
If the system is under warranty, write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details.

Good evening all!
I just got my dell inspiron 5558 in the mail today. Loving it so far, but have a question about the touch pad. On my old laptop I was able to "scroll" through pages using the touch pad. I haven't been able to figure out how to do that with this new laptop. I'm stuck using the actual webpage's scroll bar. I will eventually be getting a wireless mouse, but want to learn how to scroll for the times I won't have mouse with me.

Whenever i start the windows 10 upgrade it downloads and every step goes fine till the installation,when it is installing windows,everytime it closes with Blue Screen Of Death and this happens at random % at installing not at any constant % but happening everytime...Please help me getting this issue fixed .....I am very much frustrated at this.....

So I bought Dell Inspiron 5558 from India two months back, and the webcam never worked. Whenever I try to access the Camera, it says that "Make sure your camera is connected".
There is no imaging device listed in my device manager. Please help! 
I tried seeking help from the Indian customer service which is horrible. It has been a month and they haven't replied to my query  yet.
I was unable to find any solutions online. I already tried reset and factory restore. They probably didnt work because the imaging device was never listed in the device manager in the first place.
Plus there are no webcam drivers in the Dell website for Inspiron 5558

I like to  replace my present 1TB HDD with a Samsung EVO 500 GB SSD and keep the recovery partitions. If possible,  I like to clone the drives to save some work and if this is a  reliable method.   I have read through some past posts and people seem to have various amount of success with the transfer to SSD.  If I can't keep the recovery partitions what is the best alternative?   This laptop has a built-in DVD, so I have made recovery DVD and also have a factory recovery DVD.

I'll start off by saying I bought my laptop back in Oct of 2015 and I've been using my Inspiron 15 daily, and most part it gets the job done. I'm able to use my Wacom Bamboo easily and Adobe Flash works well enough but takes a minute to open. I've noticed the HDD is starting to show its age already. Bootup takes minutes now, and the Disk is constantly running at 100% when only Chrome is open. I'm no tech expert but seems to be early signs of hard drive failure even though it barely leaves my desk and has about 870GB/1TB free.
So I hopped on Amazon to get a replacement SSD, a SATA 3.0 USB connector, and a 16GB thumbdrive for backup & recovery.

This is my first upgrade, I've been looking up videos but just don't wanna mess anything up when I take the 1TB HDD out and put the SSD in there. Will I be safe making a backup of Windows 10 to the 16GB thumbdrive, then proceeding to replace the HDD for a clean install of Windows?

Hello,
Every time before the sound comes out, there is a rapid booming sound.It sounds as if you are turning on a woofer or something like that. I have tried troubleshooting and updating Windows. The noise is still there every time the speakers are about to be used. Realtek audio version is 6.0.1.8142. Can you help me, maybe indicating the problem?

Hello, I have read elsewhere in these forums that many people have had this problem. My laptop worked fine for about a year, but then the battery would not charge. One proposed solution was to upgrade the BIOS. I can't do that, however, as the battery has no charge, and the BIOS update requires an 11% partial charge to run. Does anyone know of a solution which would permit me to upgrade the BIOS? Note that this laptop is no longer under warranty, so I cannot simply have someone fix it without paying a hefty fee.

Answer:Battery Won't Charge On Del Inspiron 5558

Check setup (F2 at powerup).  See if the AC adapter is recognized -- if it's not (shows unknown), the battery will not charge.
If that's the case, first try a new OEM Dell AC adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack in the system:

And if that doesn't get the adapter showing, replace the mainboard.
This is a hardware fault - no BIOS update will fix it. One of the three parts (AC adapter, jack or mainboard) bad.
If the adapter IS recognized but the battery won't charge, replace the battery with a new one.

My old Dell Laptop Inspiron N5110 has ALPS touchpad and my experience was so poor that I'll never buy another laptop having ALPS touchpad EVER. Synaptics touchpad seems reasonable at most times. Except touchpad, Dell laptop served me well in past 4 years.
So I'm interested in buying new dell inspiron 5558 (Dell 5000 Series) with i5 (5200u), 1 TB HDD and 8 GB RAM.
I just wanted to make sure that do all Inspiron 5558 laptops have Synaptics touchpads? (precision touchpad or not, it doesn't matter to me much, though it'll be real nice to have.)
I tried searching dell community forums but couldn't find answer to my this question.

I have Inspiron 5558 with the original BIOS  A02. I usually don't upgrade BIOS unless something is critical because it is somewhat risky.   The latest BIOS update is A14 and states it is a security upgrade.  Does anyone know what and how critical is the security update ?  How much risk it to update my BIOS from A02 to A14?  Anyway to reduce risk  such as Windows BIOS install or install intermediate BIOS versions incrementally to A14 ?

BIOS updates should always be installed in order, one at a time, rebooting after each one. Do not skip to A14.
Are they worth it? That is subjective. I only update a system BIOS to fix a specific issue I may be facing. I never update a system BIOS just because a newer one was released. Why? Because I do not want to risk a BIOS installation failing, breaking the motherboard.

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5558 Signature edition laptop which runs windows 10. I've only had this laptop for 4 months. I've noticed that the laptop will go off for no apparent reason. I've checked the sleep settings and changed them to no avail. It goes off while I'm reading or watching a movie...just randomly. The only good thing is that when I turn it back on, it returns to whatever I was doing. If I was watching a movie when it went off, if I press the power button I will hear the audio continue while I'm unlocking the lock screen. It's a random thing that happens and it's very frustrating especially as this is a new laptop. Please help

Inspiron 5558, plugged in not charging with orginal dell charger that came with the laptop and 0.48 ghz instead of 2.4. I am 100% sure that the cords are 100% fine. The wierd thing is that it sometimes charges and sometimes it does not. But when is starts charging, it will not stop until I remove charger or battery. I found someone on reddit that had the exact problem with the exact things that happens to him and the exact model. I updated the bios and all other stuff on my pc up to high performance. Sometimes it will charge in 1 hour and sometimes it  automatically charges. Sometimes it take about 2 minutes to start. Once it took up to 5 hours. And Dell of course wants that easy money by not letting people buy cheap good chargers and letting them buy there <profanity> $60 chargers.

I would be grateful is someone were to help me the following:
I have an Inspiron 5558 and it has a keyboard with the following model code 583-BCES. I think it is an Internal American keyboard, I bought it in Switzerland - so it may be a Central European keyboard, but according to my Order description and Google it is an American keyboard. I want to change it to a UK/Ireland. I can buy the keyboard but will the layout of the keys on the UK/Ireland keyboard work with the computer I have. I ask because clearly the layout of the keys on the two keyboards is different and I do not want to buy a UK/Ireland one and discover it does not work. Even if the UK/Ireland keyboard 'fits', I presume I need to reconfigure the key set-up on the OS too? In case this has any bearing, I am using Windows 10.

Max Total Memory = 16GB
And I got already 4 GB 1 module, but can I add another module like (Kingston 8GB DDR3 PC12800 CL11 SO-DIMM KVR16LS11/?8) ? or I need 4 GB module (Kingston 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 CL11 SO-DIMM KVR16LS11/?4) ?

Hi all, 
I have been having an issue with my Inspiron 5558 for a few months now. The screen will flicker when the lid is moved, and sometimes when it's stationary. This issue occurs in BIOS. I have sent the laptop into the Dell repair depot twice now to be repaired, but it's such a terrible experience (they replaced my hard drive, put my laptop on hold, etc etc) and they haven't solved the issue so I'm going to have to take the issue into my own hands. I have seen a few posts that mention a loose connection wire - can anyone confirm this? Has anyone had similar issues? I'm getting very frustrated at this point.

Just received my Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5558) yesterday and I'm thinking of upgrading the Hard Drive to an SSD and wonder what problems if any I would encounter?
Any Bios Settings to change?The SSD will have a smaller capacity than the 1gb HDD it came with.
I would prefer to use the current Licenced version of Windows 8.1 that’s already installed on the Hard Drive that came with the laptop, I know there's cloning software out there but would prefer a clean install. I've made the Dell recovery media using a USB stick would this be all I need to reinstall Windows 8.1 on the SSD?

If you have already created a recovery media onto a USB key, That should take care of the licensing issue with 8.1 as the product key is injected into the motherboard, not the hard drive.
Please disable "Secure boot" and ensure the USB boot is enabled in BIOS before booting from the USB key to reinstall Windows.

Win 8.1
When I try to shut down the system using Windows Shutdown , the system returns to the windows login screen. I do not use the hard power switch as it has always caused improper shutdown. The system can sleep, but not shutdown or hibernate. This just occurred in the last week. A pop showing "Airplane Mode is On/off" in the Windows login screen and will toggle each time I try to shut down. I have tried shut off the laptop wifi, but this made no difference.  There are two Event 1001, which I can post details if needed.  These did not occur after all the no-shutdowns, just the latest.

I've already updated the bios, yet the processor fan is still not working. I've run a diagnostic previously and the processor fan speed is 0 rpm. Also the processor thermistor says its 106 degrees. What should I do?

i bought my laptop 2 years ago with 2TB 5400 rpm (slow for today times good for 2 years ago)
now i decide it's may the time to upgrade to SSD - for i think the pc fine but i want him a little faster.

1.  2.5/7 mm.  Any capacity you'd like will work.
2.  Go with one of the top tier vendors (Samsung, Intel, Crucial, WD/Sandisk, Toshiba).
3.  16G is the max total.
4.  If the system has been in use for a couple of years, it may need a thorough internal dusting.

Keyboard backlight on my Inspiron 5558 works fine when turning it ON/OFF with the FN-Keys. But every reboot backlight is turned ON and needs to be manually turned OFF with the FN-Keys.
Is there a fix for this?
My OS: Win 10 x64, BIOS 09, latest drivers.

Hi,
The keyboard backlight of my new Laptop Inspiron 15 5558 (bought August 2015) is constantly shutting off.  Keyboard backlight is up only 10 seconds and then shut down.  This is obviously too short and I'm searching how to set the keyboard backlight to a longer time (let say 60 secondes at least). 
My laptop is running W10 Home Edition.  I looked in Config Panel / Windows Mobility Center and there is no settings for the keyboard backlight.
I suppose a Dell system application should be able to set this on my laptop.  Please provide instruction how to proceed.

I bought a Dell Inspirion 5558 last month and every since trying skype, it shows my laptop doesnt have any webcams. I looked up in the Device manager and there is no imaging device installed.
I went to official dell drivers download page and they say windows 8 and 10 automatically detects and installs the webcam drivers.

Does the system correctly identify the AC adapter or does it show unknown?  F2 at powerup to check.
If the adapter IS recognized, replace the battery.
If the adapter IS NOT recognized, and is a non- Dell adapter, replace it with a Dell adapter.  If it's a Dell adapter and it's not recognized, replace it with a new Dell adapter first.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack in the system:

Upon resuming from hibernation the laptop started disk check and repair. Then desktop loaded but it became sluggish and eventually unresponsive. After a Hard boot (long press power key) it takes 20 mins or so to boot and eventually doesn't reach login screen or when it does it seems to hang at random stages. Sometimes I'm able to do a login after being patient but the desktop screen  is highly unresponsive invariably requires hard boot.  Please suggest things i can try. Thanks

My Inspiron 5558 (Core i5, Windows 10) won't start after installing the latest BIOS update using Dell Update.
The machine LED (on left hand side of the case) is white on power up but nothing at all is shown on the screen - not even the Dell logo, implying a POST failure. I have followed the support steps by removing the battery and then using ePSA diagnostics, as well as taking out the internal battery to see if that helps. The ePSA diagnostics give a single loud 2-tone beep which supports my theory that the BIOS is now corrupted. I have unseated and reseated the 2 RAM cards in case that was an issue.
Any ideas would be much appreciated! I need to use the data from the laptop asap and have thought about ordering a similar spec so that I can insert the hard drive while I work on getting this fixed.

I understand that there is no specific driver for the precision trackpads on these laptops (only the generic Windows driver), but the drifting cursor is driving me crazy. I've tried all different mouse & touchpad settings and updated my laptop to Windows 10 Anniversary edition, but the cursor still moves on its own when I browse websites (Chrome)..
Is there anything else I can try to get a normal trackpad that only moves when I do?

I have an Inspiron 5558 and periodically it appears to lock up and logs errors like this to the event log:
The IO operation at logical block address 6bac027 for Disk 0 was retried
This was occuring with the retail Toshiba slow HDD that shipped with the unit and so I decided it may have been faulty.  I replaced it with a Samsung 850 SSD and periodically I get the same issue!
I have upgraded the BIOS, tried with and without Intel RST drivers.  Problem still randomly occurs.
This is not a high load laptop - web and word processing!
I see others here report how slow their 5558 is and I wonder if they go into the Event Log/Windows/System, if they'd find similar logs.
I of course ran the Dell Diagnostics tool and it finds no drive or system errors... but they exist.
Any thoughts?  Is this a bad mainboard?

Last week I bought a new Dell Inspiron 5558 i7 (Windows 10) and it has been running very slow since then. I have checked the updates and software - no issues. Please help.

I get and the error message " Unknow Error "  when I try to install driver  CPU_Driver_0T8F9_WN32_10.0.22_A01.EXE.  .  I am running the installer as the Administrator and have disable my AV.  Let me know if I should paste a copy of the driver installation log file.

Yesterday my laptop screen back light started to flash, now there is no back light. 
Plugged into the TV and display is fine and when I flash a light on the screen I can see icons etc. Checked the drivers and they are up to date, so it is probably hardware. The touchscreen doesn't appear to be responding either.
Should I just get a new screen or is there any other component to consider?

If the LCD is not displaying any video, connect an external monitor to eliminate a no-POST problem. A good image on the external monitor eliminates a video card problem or a POST problem. Connect an external monitor when possible for all LCD-related problems to help eliminate a possible software or video card problem. If the LCD has extremely dim video, adjust the brightness or connect an AC adapter to eliminate a power management conservation setting in the BIOS. If the LCD has lines on the screen, check the system during POST (and System Setup) to determine if the lines are present in all modes of operation. Run the LCD BIST. If the LCD has color problems, run the LCD BIST. If the LCD has burned-out pixels, verify that the LCD is still within LCD standard guidelines. Run the ePSA. Power up the system and then press the F12 key during the boot process to get to the BIOS Boot Menu. It may be necessary to repeatedly press the key during the boot process to get the BIOS to recognize the key at the correct time. Hi all, i'm currently having some issues with the T420 in regards to the hinges. I got it on April 2011 and was reasonably happy with it, OK there was a stuck pixel but its not directly in line of vision so I can live with that. However after 5 months of relatively normal usage my hinges have become really loose, so much that at some angles it can't support the weight of the lid. It's disappointing considering the hinge on my 4 year old T61 is still relatively strong in comparison. I have 3 years warranty on the system so I thought I might as well call Lenovo Support (UK) to get it fixed, however the Lenovo rep stated that it can't be replaced under warranty as its within "reasonable wear and tear" and therefore, require a fee if I want to send it in for replacement. For sure I understand if it's 2 years old or something but 5 months? Something is not right. I was able to bide some time with the Lenovo rep to keep my case number open for a few days in regards to this, but I would like some clarification on the issue with the warranty on hinges. Reading posts on this forum indicates that the hinges are covered under warranty (ref) as long it hasn't been involved in heavy damage which mine hasn't. I also uploaded some videos of the issues i'm facing so you guys can have an idea. Hi dears,I've bought in my country (Italy) the Spectre x360 (2015 edition), model 4102nl, 8gb RAM, 256 SSD, i7, QHD display in september, so it's two months old.Since first day I've unboxed my Spectre, I've noticed what looks like a manufacturing defect, despite it's very tiny.My right hinge isn't aligned with the display lid, compared to left hinge and it sticks out from the lid less than 1mm. The left hinge doesn't sticks out.Furthermore, when I open the display lid sometimes (usually when I close the display totally) I can hear a very faint noise coming from the right hinge.Could this lead to breaking itself in the immediate future? I bought a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad T460S in Nov 2016. This is supposed to be their premium business laptop range. I uses it daily, simple computer work. Lately it starts to have problem hibernating and waking from sleep/hibernation. Yesterday the steel left hinge suddenly broke. I contacted the Lenovo Support today and they replied : The three year international Warranty does not cover the hinges. It's like you buy a new car, then the hinge of your drive breaks and it's not covered by warranty? What kind of logic is that? They want to charge me for the repair. I am getting a quote from them, this is probably the last Thinkpad I will ever buy from Lenovo! I am getting a quote from them. I wonder if we can get the part myself and attempt a self repair. But this is deeply disappointing!

I have recently bought an SSD(Sandisk SSDPLUS), and now when I boot the computer it starts emitting a high pitched noise and it continues until I reboot the computer. I have also tried placing the SSD in another computer and everything works as intended. I have also tried placing the old HDD into the laptop and no problems occur.
Has anyone else had this kind of problem?

Newly arrived Inspiron 5558 working fine except when Quick Start Guide has me creating recovery media. When I try to create a recovery drive with backup file box checked off, I get an error. We can’t create the recovery drive. A problem occurred while creating the recovery drive. Any suggestions?

Kindly try the following steps :
Method 1: Perform Clean Boot.
Placing your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. Check this issue in clean boot state.
 

Press Windows key + X key. And select Run.
Type msconfig in the Run box and hit Enter.
On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.
On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager.
On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click Disable.
Close Task Manager.
On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.

Note: After clean boot troubleshooting step, follow the section "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" in the provided link to return your computer to Normal startup mode.
Method 2:
Try to run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to check for any file corruption. SFC scan will scan for corrupt system files on the computer and repair them.

Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin).
In the Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow

Dell Inspiron 5558 does not turn on. There is no fan or POST beep when depressing power button. No screen illumination. I have tried to drain power from RAM and attempted to start up following power drain from Ram procedure with power adapter connected. Any help will be apprecated.
