I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

Ok, so recently my desktop (a very NICE desktop) has been crashing and such. Even when I'm not in Maya or Photoshop, I see in the task manager the usage jumping around like crazy. I've noticed that svchost.exe sucks 100,000% or more of my usage and I can't load Counter Strike Source anymore without it crashing to the desktop or forcing me to restart my PC because of a blank screen. I've tried many programs that may help it like Process Tamer, Registry Cleaners, FreeRAMXP Pro and others, but the problem remains. This started happening just recently so....

Anyway, WTF!!? How do I alleviate this b/s??

Whenever i run my cd/dvd rom my cpu usage increases upto 52% and cpu runs at half of its speed. Everything slows down, even songs dont play at normal speed, mouse moves at a very slow speed and it takes one and a half hour to write a dvd nd when my cd/dvd rom is not running everything is normal. Plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz can ne1 help me with this.

Answer:cpu usage increases, pc slows down

I think that there is something wrong with that cd rom component. You've got to try another one (borrow one I mean) and see how it will run. CD/DVD roms don't use much cpu power at all. If it's not that, your motherboard ide output may be defective. You could try the outlet that your hard drive is in (use a two outlet cable with the cd rom as a slave). Please remember that you should not run a PC this way as a rule. Just to test your mobo and the cd rom unit. Good Luck.

As the title said.

But from what I see on OCCT, it's unusual (I've attached the photo) -

Normally, the CPU usage will be showing 0 - 30. But in the image, OCCT showed that my CPU usage was about 20 - 80 !

Don't forget the RAM.

OCCT will normally show that my computer is using it's RAM from about 1000 -2000 but in the image, the RAM is starting off at 2200 +.

It's unusual because this is a first. OCCT has never showed me this and I would like to ask if there is a problem with my PC and if there is, how do I fix it?

I hope to receive some help soon. This is freaking me out.

Answer:CPU Usage and RAM increases when I use the internet/web browser.

You are way too into monitoring your system.
My guess for the browser using more cpu is likely a plugin gone bad. Or it could even just be a specific element on a page you visited.
Spikes in cpu useage happen all the time.

...and what is the point in even having ram if it's not getting used?
The more commonly you use apps the more of them windows will keep on hold in memory for you.
Over the course of time this could lead to slightly higher memory numbers as the system gets used to how you are using it and precaches more dll's and system files.

Windows 7 is different in this respect than it's predecessors.

That being said 2gigs when idle seems a bit on the high side. I only run around 1.33 gigs out of my 16 when in a idle state. I also keep this system pretty trim as it's primarily expected to play games and hd video.

When I've been surfing IE7 for awhile I will check the task manager to see what my memory usage is and seems to increase the longer I'm online. The highest I've seen it was 200,000K. I found a few other threads that were similar but different, one said to download toolbarcop but then said to uninstall norton and thats my virus protection. It didn't explain why so I didn't follow the instructions but I don't know if this is just normal or if there is a tweek I need to make but I notice my browser slows down the more memory I'm using. If I restart IE it goes back down to about 37,000K and it's normal again. So if anyone knows what I should do I would like some input, thank you.

Ok well for starters I'm not all that computer savvy but any information on how to correct this issue without wiping my system clean would be greatly appreciated. This issue started over the weekend when my GF was playing games online. I have no clue what she clicked on or even if she is the one that caused in the issue. But since the weekend my CPU usage spikes everytime I attempt to move my mouse around and usually sticks at 100 when I have my browser open. When I leave the laptop idle its under 10 for the most part. I have a Dell Latitude D620 with Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit...intel core 2 processor..t5600 1.83GHz...4 GB RAM. If anyone can help me out with this issue or if I poster in the wrong place please feel free to leave a comment. Thanks!

I am using Win XP, Sp2, Outlook 07 with no plugins. I made the mistake of installing Xobni to see how it worked, did not like it, uninstalled it, and now Outlook causes my CPU usage to continually cycle between 0 and 45%. I went back to Outlook 2000 to see if that would help-it did not, so I then went back to Outlook 07. It does not occur with Outlook Express-only Outlook. I can not find any sign of Xobni on my computer. What can I do to stop this continual CPU usage occurring for no reason. I am not checking e-mail automatically or doing anything else that would this.

Task manager shows the CPU spike up to 60-100% with rapid mouse movement. That's with running no program in particular, but if, for example, firefox.exe is running, firefox.exe will spike up to around 40 with rapid mouse movement along with the 60-100% CPU usage. Other processes like dwm.exe(Desktop Window Manager) and csrss.exe will go up a few percent too.

I recently upgraded my operating system from XP to Windows 7.
I installed the most recent drivers for my mouse and graphics card(I even tried older drivers) and let windows try to find drivers for other hardware. What drivers are there that would need to be updated?
I also scanned with Avast, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Doctor.

32-bit Windows 7
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2.2GHz
nVidia 7600 GS
1 GB
170GB
Razer Deathadder mouse.

Not only is this problematic with general pc usage, but it makes games unplayable :( . Help greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm having this for quite some time now, physical memory usage goes up (especially when using firefox/bitcomet - both of which are the highest consumers of memory on my taskbar-around 200-500MB of RAM).
shutting them down will only free a small amount of the memory and the rest still counts as taken.
at first i thought it was a bitcomet only thing so i posted for help there:
Bitcomet hogging memory - Comet Forums
it looks like a memory leak since the process won't free the memory
i also read on google that using a processor with "NUMA" based memory design doesn't go well with windows 7 (which is the case here), therefore i tried to download an attached hotfix which apparently did not match my machine (Windows6.1-KB2155311-x64)
here are my specs:
cpu: intel i7 860
gpu: geforce 560 ti
8GB 1333MHZ of RAM
tons of free hd space

any ideas on how to proceed?
thank you for your time

Answer:Physical memory usage increases over time

Hello mryumyum and welcome to Seven Forums.

As you've indicated, if the PC has been in extended continuous use memory leaks can occur from some programs (usually badly written ones.) That means used memory is not released for reuse. Over time this can accumulate. If, after each reboot, your memory usage drops to the same level, I wouldn't worry. Rebooting more frequently might help if it's the result of a badly written program.

As a general rule, you should not have any available RAM (or at least very little). Available RAM is wasted RAM. You paid for all of it and shouldn't want to see any of it wasted. Windows 7 works hard to keep all your RAM working for you all the time, for example using it for cache if your apps don't need it, then taking it back again if your apps need it later. This is a good feature of Windows 7, not bad. You could run the Resource Monitor to see exactly how your RAM is being allocated.

Resource Monitor

Another possibility would be malware. Make sure your security software (including real-time protection) is present and up to date. Do a full scan of all drives for malware with your installed antimalware suite. You could then follow it up with free Malwarebytes for a second on-demand scan since no antimalware product is 100% effective 100% of the time.

You could also run the free Process Monitor to get a better idea of what's using your RAM. Don't even have to install it. You can run it from the live link at the bottom of the page (run proce... Read more

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, I have noticed something. The memory usage gradually increases over time (starts off just under 30%, takes only a few days to climb to 50%, depending on how many programs I use) and I inevitably have to reboot, after which the whole cycle starts over again. All I know is that something in the background is gradually eating away at the memory and I have been unable to track down what it is. I looked in the Resource Manager once and found that the processes using the largest amounts of memory were OSDSrv.exe, the webcam which I don't know how to turn off, MsMpEng.exe (the Windows Defender process), and SearchUI.exe which is just Cortana sitting idle in the background. Can anyone help me? Also the non-paged pool of memory is larger than the paged pool of memory but they are within 100MB of each other.

Hi,

Firstly, I have searched many thread and found similar but not exactly the same symptoms, and tried a number of the suggested remedies. However, I'd like to list all symptoms here and ask advice. It is possible there are multiple issues at work (e.g with Firefox and with sound playback) so my apologies for appearing to be an idiot

1. Recently Win 7 kept giving me a "memory almost full" error, and occasional freezing. I did the normal memory tests and full hardware tests, nothing showed. As I am not on auto update I did a manual Win 7 update. Did not solve the problem. Any app I am running (including Windows Explorer) is prone to freeze for several seconds, yet Resource Monitor shows a lull in all activities (i.e. HDD, memory and CPU), the CPU usage shows as 0-2% but nothing happens. In these cases Firefox shows a "not responding" message.

2. I ran ESET which came up with 2 instances of "a variant of Win32/Adware.Yontoo.B " both of which were deleted, but the problem persists. I have Kaspersky installed, with auto updates and daily scans, nothing shows. I ran Malwarebytes, nothing shows.

3. I did the BSOD check and downloads (now in a ZIP file), also made several screen captures of Task Manager and Resorce Monitor at various stages (first logon, with 1 app running, after one of these freezes) in a Word file, but each time I try to upload them on here, individually or together, I get a Time Out error.

4. Possibly unrelated, I am not sure... Read more

Windows Experience Index 3.9 (not sure if that is relevant)

Anything else I should add?

For about the past week now, my RAM usage has been gradually increasing overtime. Basically after an hour another GB will be in use by apparently nothing and that will keep repeating and I can't clear it unless I restart my PC. I've tried scanning for virus' with Malwarebytes and tried refreshing the paging file and neither worked. I've looked through task manager (with all processes shown) and resource manager and neither of them add up to what the current amount of RAM that is being used.

Any help would be appreciated as this is starting to get annoying.

Cheers,

Answer:RAM usage increases overtime (Memory leak?)

- Did you install a program about one week ago ? Some programs simply have lousy memory management, they claim more and more memory without releasing any of it.
- The file cache could be growing & growing and the (size of the) cache doesn't show up in Task Manager. The file cache isn't part of the "Standby" memory but part of the "In Use" memory. (See Resource Monitor)
- Install PcWinTech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage every 15 minutes (or any other user defined interval) and let it also collapse the file cache. (Google's Chrome & Firefox are very stubborn and won't release too much memory).
http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem
http://www.pcwintech.com/about-cleanmem
Cleanmem pushes data from "In Use" to "Standby" and NOT to the pagefile. And the larger the "Standby" is, the better.

Keep me posted.

For quite a while now, Firefox has been slowly using more and more memory. If I close it down and restart, the memory usage will start at say 250,000K and over several hours slowly climb to well over 1,000,000K. I'm observing this in Task Manager in XP Pro. When the usage gets to the 1M mark or so, the computer starts to become sluggish or even locks up. If I leave it alone and walk away for a while, sometimes the problem "self corrects" and I'll find a working system again. It's getting rather frustrating and I am by no means expert enough to deal with this or even know where to begin.
I am running the most recent ver. of FF, 33.0.2 -- just updated today. I recently posted in the XP support sub-form for help speeding up my slow system so I feel the computer is running pretty good now save for this persistent issue with FF.
Is there something I can do to deal with this memory problem? I'm completely at sea and calling for help..... Thanks in advance for any replies and advice....

if you have any addons and toolbars, disable them and see if it helps. In general, you you regularly delete your firefox cache, history? If not, do that and see if it helps.

I have a Radeon R7 240 and have had it for a little over a year with no problems. A couple of days ago, I noticed games were running unusually slowly and decided to check the temperature, which was at around 50 C (122 F). This seemed very high as it used to stay at around 30 C (86 F).

Restarting fixes it temporarily. After about half an hour of normal temperature it spikes back up within a matter of minutes and stays at a maximum of 53 C (127 F). Now, supposedly this isn't dangerously high, but it's still much higher than it should be (especially when idle) and the decrease performance is noticeable when I'm playing a game and not just using my browser.

Additionally, once it begins spiking, GPU usage seems very high. HWMonitor tells me it's at 90-94%, but that doesn't seem right as I have nothing running that could make it that high. CPU and disk usage seem totally normal. I've downloaded a program called Process Explorer to check what could be causing it, but nothing weird shows up.

Right now I'm blaming it on dust and will try to clean it up as soon as I have the time, but I've had graphics cards overheat before and don't remember it affecting GPU usage, so I decided to make a thread just in case anyone knows what could be causing it. Thanks in advance.

Hi Kusai ^_^,Could you please open up Task Manager and then post back a screenshot of the RAM usage sorted in descending order? Do this when the Task Manager shows you that the RAM usage is pretty high. When the RAM usage increases above a fixed percentage, Windows starts using the Hard Disk as a substitute for RAM which causes a pretty significant drop in the performance. Also, could you please upload the ZIP file generated by the below tool?https://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/Once the tool completes, it will generate a ZIP file on the desktop. Please upload that file to a 3rd party file hoster like MediaFire, OneDrive etc and post the link here.Let me know in case of any problems ^_^-Pranav

Hello everyone, I was wondering if I could get some help.
I use Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, and it continually increases RAM usage. I don't my PC off very often due to me just being impatient and not wanting to wait for the reboot process, so I just leave it on. However, upon boot ram usage is at about 40% of 4GB. This is because I have a decent amount of things running in the background. After about a day and a half, RAM usage without anything but normal startup items running, increases to 70%. I have tried many things and even killing some processes still leaves the ram usage very high due to the blasted SVChost.exe process which I understand is necessary for the system to work, but angers me because it launches itself in many instances each of which uses obscene amounts of ram.

SPECS:
AMD Phenom II 1055t 3.38GHz x6
Corsair 2GB DDR2-800 RAM
ASUS M4A78 Plus Motherboard
Zotac Nvidia 9600GT Video Card
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Screenshots of running processes is attached. You will notice that sidebar.exe, Skype, Steam, and Firefox are all using obscene amounts of ram. When the programs are ran upon coldboot, they use much less ram, and their ram usage just increases continually throughout the time the pc is on. Same with SVChost.exe

TL;DR - How do I decrease ram usage so it doesn't continually increase upon the PC being on?

All help is greatly appreciated!

Answer:Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit continually increases RAM usage?

Why do you care what RAM it uses? That is what the RAM is there for, there is nothing to be gained by trying to force Windows to use less.

Some programs suffer from memory leaks. This keeps on increasing the size of RAM they use. All you can do is restart the machine, or use some tricks as a not very good workaround.

So lately, I've noticed an immense amount of CPU usage when my PC is idle. This happened very suddenly and after some research I've found the two culpurets! PlugPlay and AudioEndPointBuilder. Since this is more of a Windows 7 problem than anything, I'm worried that if I try to stop either of those 2 proccesses something can really go wrong. I actualy tried the "stop process" option but both Process would keep running normally. I'm pretty sure that it's not a virus/malware problem. At this point I'm not sure as to what I can do more.

My Acer laptop started to run extremely slowly, taking several minutes to do simple things as opening a folder or Google Chrome D:

I dont think my CPU or my RAM is a problem, since it is using about 0% cpu usage and 30% of my RAM.

I have run several anti-virus scans with both Avast! and Malwarebytes, but neither of them found anything :(

This problem appeared over night. One day it was doing just fine, and BOOM, the next morning, complete meltdown. i could only boot in safe mode, and it gave me a BSOD 3 times.

It has made a slow recovery of its own since then, and i can run it in normal mode. However it is still too slow to do pretty much anything...
Now, i know this isnt the best of PC?s, but it has never in its 2 year old life screwed me over like it is now...

I have two primary suspects here. one being that the harddrive is half broken, but im not sure how much sense that makes (ps. i have 120gb free). The other one being a process called csrss.exe, wich im suspecting may be a virus. ( csrss.exe Windows process - What is it? )

I hope someone can help me! i need this PC for school work :(

Answer:Laptop running very slowly with 0% cpu usage

Hi KrozzHair,

Try downloading and running Advanced windows care, which should help speed up your computer and sort out any registry problems...and its free :
Advanced SystemCare - CNET Download.com

If your getting BSODs its usually either driver or hardware related, firstly make sure all your drivers are uptodate and are correct for your system.

Let me know how you get on,

I used the Recovery CD after my Equium A100-338 started going very slowly, It still seems slower than it used to be.
I haven't added anything to the comp since the Recovery CD and checked the task manager to see if i could spot anything suspicious.

The stats say, CPU usage 18-22% but the Physical memory was at 68% is this normal or should it be lower?

Is there a list of standard processes that i can check against mine to see if its doing something it shouldnt be?

Thanks

Answer:Equium A100-338 started going very slowly after usage of Recovery CD

Hi

I think you are feeling that the unit is a little bit slower due to the high amount of different processes which are running in the OS background.

The point is that your notebook supports different features like FN buttons, Toshiba control buttons, etc?
All this features needs drivers.

Furthermore as I?m not mistaken the Norton Internet Security was installed on your system.
It?s a part of the Toshiba image and this tool could affect the system performance.

I used it in the past but switched now to another application which doesn?t need many hardware resources.

So if you want you can disable or remove some tools and utilities which are not important for you and could clean the system using a 3rd party tool called ?CCleaner?

Hello! I did a cursory search of the forums for this issue but there are just too many cases to review them all so I figured I would post here anyways.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1525 and Windows Vista, and I've been having a lot of problems with it lately... but I have a question about one in particular right now.

My computer is running really slowly (regardless of whether I am online or offline or how many applications I have open). It doesn't take abnormally long to boot up the computer itself, but booting up separate applications takes forever.

My CPU also seems to spend a lot of it's time running at 80% or higher... it's staying between 50% and 60% right now but before I started typing this question it had spent about 10 minutes at 100% usage. I have only two programs open- Firefox and Microsoft Word. (I've since closed Word but I didn't notice any significant difference in CPU usage- it's staying around the same).

While the computer was at 100% CPU usage it was freezing every couple of minutes for just 30 seconds or so. I'd let it process or whatever until it was done freaking out and the usage had come down a bit and then try to type or do an internet search and it would shoot straight back up and freeze again.

I'm also wondering at the number of processes I have running - 77... although I've heard Vista runs a large number of processes and so maybe I shouldn't be worried about this? I've gotten ... Read more

Brief Summary: I had this problem with windows 7, and figured upgrading to windows 8 would solve the issue (I wanted to upgrade anyway) but it's still happening. I have 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and when I start windows it has about 1.5 GB in use. Just letting it sit there, the memory use slowly climbs and climbs until memory usage says 90%+ and it gets extremely laggy or freezes. It takes less than a day of being on to hit the 90% memory usage. Restarting my PC resets memory usage and the climb begins over again until I have to reset, rinse repeat.

The processes tab shows all processes only using the original 1.5GB and the continuous memory usage comes out of no where. I thought it could be a problem with my RAM so I swapped it out and it's still happening - even running memtest for half a day shows 0 failures. I have tried disabling all services from starting at startup except Microsoft services and it still happens. I have tried setting my page file manually (I set it to minimum AND maximum at 16GB). Still happening.

I have Windows 8.1, Asus Z97 Sabertooth Mark 2 motherboard, Corsair vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB, Asus 970 GTX, Samsung 250GB Evo 850 SSD, WD 2 TB Black HDD. My system is fully up-to-date with updates and all drivers are the newest versions. I have to leave for work right now but will be checking this thread and responding throughout the day if anyone has any advice of what my problem could be, and I will be back to test any advice from you guys when I'm off... My mozilla firefox just yesterday began to act very slowly. Switching between tabs has taken forever and just opening a new page takes a while. The bookmarks tab, and any other tab at the top for that matter, cannot be opened. I click them, then get the outline of the window, but the image behind is shown, like it is frozen. To exit i have to use alt + F4 or the ctrl + alt + del then end process. Once that happens the computer runs as normal. At the windows manager, i also notice that firefox.exe is using 50% of the CPU usage and 170,000 K of memeory. IE on the other hand runs perfectly well, even if firefox is open. How can i fix it? Hi buxanto and welcome to Tenforums.

I wouldn't go reinstalling just yet, there are a few things you can do:

Let's check for infection
-download and run RKILL
This is a little program that will stop any malicious running processes temporarily until next boot. After running, it places a text file on your desktop - paste that info here.

- download, install and run Malwarebytes Antimalware Free
Update the definitions and go into settings and select the box to scan for Rootkits as well as everything else that is already checked. Do a custom scan and select your entire C: drive.

Let us know if it finds anything. Reboot if asked to. If you do reboot, run RKILL again.

Now i got told to go under my Windows task manager and end all the applications/processes that are hogging up all the data and i realized that there is like 9-12 Svchost.exe running in the processes"
sometimes i see my System idle processes jumping from 50+ cpu aswell.

Hi Tyler Let's get more information on your system first.MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:Flush DNS;Report IE Proxy Settings;Reset IE Proxy Settings;Report FF Proxy Settings;Reset FF Proxy Settings;List content of Hosts;List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply; Also, the "System Idle Process" isn't a real process if I can say. This process "uses" the CPU that is currently not in use by the system. Which means that the higher it's "CPU usage" is, the less CPU is actually in use. If it have a CPU usage of 80, it means that you are currently using (100 - 80) 20% of your CPU So its CPU Usage doesn't matter a lot.

Hello all. Broni tried to help with this one in another forum (here) but said i should open a new thread here.

The problem is that when i boot up, svchost.exe (and specifically a thread called wuaueng.dll) uses up 50% of the cpu. After a while another service joins in called wzcsldr2.exe and uses up the other 50% so if you do the math, my computer slows down to a crawl. What i noticed is that after a while (around half an hour) wzcsldr2 stops using 50% and goes back to normal while the svchost needs at least and hour or two to get back to normal. They go up again at times during the day though. I have tried using rootkit removal tools MBAM and online scanners, cleaned whatever they found but the problem persists. Also, there are errors on startup having window names of the programs running on startup (not all) telling me that
"the procedure entry point_except_handler4_common could not be located in dynamic link library msvcrt.dll"

Please if someone is to help with this one, it would be helpful to live somewhere in europe, That is because of the time-difference i will have to wait till its morning to see the replies to my answers, not being able to do more than one step at a day. That is IF the step goes as planned...

Depending on your response, I'll give you next step... Read more

Hi, my svchost is using 100% unused cpu, making my computer run incredibly slow. When I end the process it starts back up within 30 seconds. I've used multiple virus programs, cleaned and fixed my registry, and have tried to update windows. when i click go to service nothing is highlighted, I even tried manually clicking go to process on all running services.
I've searching on how to fix this for 3 days straight, any help would be appreciated.

I just formatted my laptop and put Win XP Pro on it. Since then the CPU usage has been at 100%. According to the task manager SVCHOST.EXE is about 98% of it. Any reason why it's doing this and what can I do to fix it? There's absolutely nothing on the computer but XP Pro.

Thanks!

Hello. This is my first time posting here. I'm having a problem with high cpu usage. Upon checking it, there seems to be a bitcoin miner trojan that has taken up residence in my Windows\Temp folder. Deleting it simply causes it to reinstall itself on reboot. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 SP1. Will post more details if needed.

Hi,

I have a problem with my svchost taking up 95% of my CPU usage. I have explored earlier threads about this issue, but it seems I might need help to fix the problem fully. I have DLed HijackThis and done a scan and have the results. Hoping someone can help me past this point.

Thanks

Answer:CPU usage at 100% svchost using 95%

There are a number of things it could be, the first thing is the most obvious anti-virus/spyware so run a scan using AVG/Spybot. McAfee is known to knock up that process as well, if you have it installed try uninstalling it. (Back in 2006 Microsoft Updates also managed to break a few computers with the svchost running at 90%+).

Answer:svchost.exe 100% CPU usage!?!?

I'd say you've got a virus.. there are a number of them that will do this..

Take a close look is it sVChost or sCVhost.exe if its the later then its100% you've got a worm..

but you still may have spyware or a virus causeing it if it isnt that name

Recently my main system started having some problems so I decided to do a complete reinstall. After doing so, I got myself infected by a nasty spyware (visited a site before installing NOD32 & Zonealarm) so I installed NOD32 again and MS Anti-Spyware and using HijackThis I killed off the spyware/virus.

However, whenever I start Windows I still get svchost.exe using 99% of my CPU. So I used cmd and found it was tied to "RPCxSs" I searched on google but didn't find anything pertaining to my particular situation so I'm wondering, is that svchost.exe a spyware fake?

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated . . .

Answer:svchost.exe 100% CPU usage

Use ad-aware and spybot (See my Signature). If those don't work, get HijackThis and have it make a log (But don't repair anything yet, you'll get a lot of results back that aren't exactly bad). Post the results of the HijackThis scan in here, and we can figure out whats what.

System: MS Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3
Problem: One of the svchost.exe entries continually runs at around 30-50% CPU; sometimes it is higher.
It doesn?t appear to be linked to Windows update (no update between being OK and not) and no other software was loaded just before it started. I have had a couple of corruptions on the hard drive recently so that?s a possible source of error.
This copy of svc.host.exe runs a lot of services. I killed all services that I could but the CPU usage didn?t change.
I have other evidence from Process Explorer and another issue. Occasionally my startup freezes; explorer.exe will have low memory usage so I kill it and restart it and the startup carries on successfully although Netmeter doesn?t get started (starting Netmeter doesn?t cause the problem to come back). Since the problem started, I?ve had to do this 4 times and on 3 occasions the svchost entry is fine and operates normally. Once it looked OK initially but then the problem came back after a while.
Looking at the Thread list for svchost shows that the CPU time is nearly all listed against 1 entry for wbemcomn.dll. This entry does not occur in the list when it?s operating properly.
The services that I can?t kill in svchost are:
srvsvc.dll
wkssvc.dll
netman.dll
rasmans.dll
srsvc.dll
tapisrv.dll
trkwks.dll
wbem\WMIsvc.dll
wiaservc.dll
wbemcomn.dll is in sub-directory wbem
BTW I did find a Microsoft kb article which was similar and it described... Read more

I'm having trouble with a workstation on my network that is running windows 2kpro. According to the task manager. It seems the svchost.exe is using 50 to 90% of the CPU. Things are slow. I've done some research and troubleshooting and it's not the Welchia worm or blaster worm. I've run ad-aware, cwshredder and other bug removers with no luck. In safe mode, the computer seems to work fine. Any suggestions?

The problem is that one of my svchost.exe mem usage spikes to over 500mb of ram and it uses every drop of free CPU which constantly varies from 0-95% or anywhere in between. It does not happen immediately, on the contrary it only starts to happen after my computer has been on for about 10-20 min. When i end the process and restart the services, my computer will be fine for another 10-15 minutes before it will start eating up all available RAM and cpu. I am at my wits end to fix this. Using Process Explorer i individually stopped the services under that process then restarted them except for 3-4 that i was not allowed to stop but all during that time it continued to eat more and more of my ram. I am welcome to any suggestions on this. Whatever information is required such as a HJT log or a list of the services under the svchost from process explorer, i can give it.

Right before this started happening, I had a massive malware attack on my computer where i used a system restore and even then it took awhile to get rid of everything.

I just restarted my computer and in the time it took to write this it started eating all my ram. mem usage is at 400k.

Hi, my system runs perfectly and I went through the step by step spyware/addware removal process with one of the top guys on here. All went well.

2 weeks in and I am so happy with my setup, I don't really ever restart my PC all that often.

Today I shut down and rebooted and on bootup everything was VERY sluggish?

I Ctrl+Alt+Del to system process and one of the SVCHOST.exe tasks was using 99% of the CPU, sometimes dropping to 86% but you get the idea, totally raping my system resource.

I ended the task in system manager and then it took a while it refresh everything. Eventually it did.

When it was done it them made the system theme - just the task bar loose the theme color?! and reset the windows task bar to the standard look (grey and black) The windows were fine? I reloaded the colors by right clicking the desktop -> properties -> Appearance Tab then re select the color scheme I have and it was all back to normal.

I don't understand what this could be.

I have XP PRO - All latest updates

Zone Alarm - latest updates

NOD32

I think it may be something to do with Adobe's stupid system start up crap as I have Acrobat 8 Pro, but it seems to want LOADS of junk on system start up.

Once I've ended the svchost.exe and reset the theme all is perfect.

So, I "fixed" a minor bug in my computer, that gave me back sound and usb capabilities, etc.. because I accidentally deleted a svchost a while back. Now that I have everything back, one of my crutial svchost.exe's is taking up around 99% of my system processes at all times, lagging everything on my computer, and is generally annoying me with all the extra noise. I've tried SOLO virus scanner, I haven't found anything new that's related in Hijackthis, and I've tried AVG Free Scan.. Nothing seems to fix this problem, and ending the processes automaticly restarts my computer within fifty seconds...Anyone got any ideas that could help me out a little bit?I'm currently running Windows XP Home Edition, Compaq based computer..Thanks.

I noticed the CPU at 100% after having installed the driver to my new HP Photosmart C7250 wireless printer. In fact, the day I installed it, the printer worked fine. After powering the computer off and booting up the next day, the CPU cranked at a constant 100% and the printer no longer appeared available in the Printers & Faxes folder. When I went to Add/Remove Programs, the HP C7250 printer program was gone, but the new HP Solution Center 9.0 program was still there!

I contacted HP and they had me re-install the printer off of the install disk using an "off-the-beaten-path" install, which fixed accessing the printer. Still the CPU problem existed.

I contacted Dell and they helped me to isolate the problem as a svchost.exe process. I can "End Process" the svchost.exe with no seemingly adverse consequence in Task Manager and the CPU will settle down. They told me to go to HP and get a patch for the C7250.

I contacted HP and the Tech Support staff said there was no patch, claiming the problem was not there's. He said it was a Dell or Microsoft OS problem.

I've done a restore point before installing the driver. I've been made to uninstall and re-install my McAfee Security Center. I've been told to turn off my Automatic Updates (I turned that back on later). I've uninstalled the HP C7250 software (CPU calms down) and re-installed it. When I re-install the C7250, the printer works fine--then I turn the computer off and reboot the next day: t... Read more

I think I have a deadly virus or something. My svchost.exe ALWAYS uses 100% CPU Usage or something really high. I took some screenshots for to help and explain my situation.Screenshot1Screenshot2sorry if the screenshots dont work, geocities is a crappy hoster anyways.I am using Windows XP Professional SP1.I used Yahoo Anti-Spy, Ad-Adware, and Spybot Search and Destroy. I also have Mcafee and i have my Window's firewall turned on.It lags ,y whole system. Usually, my documents save instanteously. Answer:svchost using 100% CPU Usage

I am having a similar problem . . . I recently discovered that when I tried to update the definitions for Ad Aware, my computer froze; now it has been taking a long time to open/close, and in Task Manager, svchost is hogging all of my processing.

I spoke with a Dell rep (for like 5 hours) and we could not seem to get it taken care of. I successfully ran MS Anti-spyware; Norton Anti-spyware/Anti-virus, and downloaded the Ad Aware definitions into a zip drive, and ran it in safe mode. MS did find a spyware, but zapped it.

The dell rep walked me thru the Hijackthis log, and took care of a couple of issues.

Anyone have any ideas??? What do i do next??

Thanks so much!!

Randomly the processor usage on this Toshiba laptop with WindowsXP Pro will slowly dwindle down to 0% and eventually just lock up. Memory usage remains the same for the most part.

I started up Prime95 to stress everything in Windows... 10 minutes goes by and all processor usage falls to 0%. Task Manager is open and remains the only "clickable" Window after everything drops to 0%. Eventually after about another 5 minutes the Task Manager window is no longer clickable and able to be manipulated but the mouse will still move around. Another 5 minutes goes by and the mouse freezes.

Thoughts?

-Only minimal Windows processes are starting up. Computer will eventually do this in safe mode as well.
-Windows is fully updated.
-Computer is completely clean of any type of malware/spyware/virus as far as I can tell.
-Ive ran multiple non-Windows based tests/stress tests on the cpu, memory, and hard drive to rule those out and they go all night.
-Not a heat issue - temperatures are fine. I also opened it up and cleaned out the heatsink just to be sure.

Answer:This problem has me stumped... processor usage slowly dwindles and then pc locks up.

Have you run memtest?

also try a HDD diagnostic utility. i use spinrite

So I recently had a conficker, and my troll friend says he "had" a sub7 on my computer too, (this is what happens when you have crappy hacker friends and decide to skype with them and click on one of their links after they say "hey bro! check out this picture!"). After running many many different rootkit scanners etc i manage to remove alot of malware that i suspect the conficker had downloaded to my pc I knew I still had a conficker because my hosts file was untouched but there were websites I could still not access on my desktop and desktop only (namely antivirus sites). So i got tired of all that and reset my pc using a windows disc and then everything was ok. So i thought, now my ram slowly ramps up to 100% within a few hours of use which is funny because I have 8gb of ram and would be staring at task manager not seeing what is using all this ram.. Hacker friend says "oh dont worrry dude, just use volatility.py and find what it is"...., never could figure out what i was doing with volatility, not my cup of tea. I suspect I have a bad root kit because I actually had this some time ago but wiped my pc completely because of this issue thinking I probably just had a bad program causing it but it never went away (also did not go away after the reset I did because of the conficker). I have over 1TB of software and games and would prefer not to just nuke everything to get rid of this so I decided to get help from more knowledgeable places. I am currently using kaspersky and malw... Read more

Ram usage has jumped to 35% from 22%. Here is my hijack this from a half hour since boot,  (same boot as last log):

There is a serious issue with svchost.exe on my windows 7 computer. My HP Touchsmart 300-1025 has windows 7 64bit installed and svchost is slowing down the computer and using very high cpu and memory usage. It is not a virus or malware. I know the computer is not infected because one the computer has webroot and two if it was a virus or malware I would not be able to use the computer at all. So it has to be an issue with windows 7 64bit itself. Here is a screenshot of what I'm talking about and proof.

Alright, my computer has been acting up lately and I have run Task Manager to see why I have been having huge spikes when playing games like World of Warcraft and I see SVCHOST.EXE spiking from about 30-90% CPU Usage every 2-5 seconds. I read many forums on how to fix it and I have done so many things, such as rolling back Windows Media 11 to 10, rolling back Internet Explorer 7 to 6 and disabling Automatic Updates in 2 places. Now I stumbled upon forums saying that Process Explorer helped figure out the problem, and it seems that the SVCHOST.EXE using up all cpu is in control of my Audio and various other programs such as network connection and such. So I opened up the program info in Process Explorer and I went to the Threads tab and looked at which "Threads" used up the most CPU Usage and suspended them, I can't open programs like Limewire, iTunes, or repair internet when I suspend 4-6 of the threads on start up. And my computer has acted out of ordinary for 2 days after I started suspending threads. All the threads I suspend are kernel32.dll ones, such as this kernel32.dll!CreateThread+0x22 and I know I didn't solve my CPU usage problem but I just postponed it until I got a new one or something. But lately it has become unbearable and I think it has something to do with the kernel32.dll files, whatever they are. I don't know if I should just kill the threads or not! Please help! A few days ago I noticed my CPU usage high and wouldn't fall under 50%. I found out it was something to do with svchost.exe so I killed it off and restarted my computer. It actually worked and my CPU usage was down to normal, but when I connect to the internet with my wireless adapter (I am on a desktop and the network is at my house) the buggy svchost.exe would start up again. I ran several virus scans, but nothing related was found.

I am running XP SP3.

Also I attached an image of my processes list from ProcessesExplorer. See where that svchost.exe is?

I thought I had this issue taken care of but unfortunately I do not.

one way to tell which service it's running is to check with windows defender's process explorer. you check using the process id. i wrote a post here on how to do that http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...er-313161.html

Answer:svchost.exe High CPU usage 98% of at least one CPU.

Get the PID of the problematic svchost.exe process (586 in your screenshot

Run Task Manger and right click on the matching svchost process and choose "Go to service"

Let us know which services are running under it.
If Windows Update shows up it's likely to be the culprit. You can confirm by stopping Windows Update Service via Start> Run> services.msc

Stop then set startup type to disabled and reboot to test.

Also worth a mention:

Grab copies if these and run them:

Svchost Process Analyzer

svchost viewer

The first one helps you check for anything out of the ordinary (malware running under svchost.exe) or unusual services configuration.

The second one just breaks down each svchost.exe process into it's component services.

Windows Update problem (if suspect can also be confirmed using RAMMap:

Note: RAMMap must be run when the problem is actually happening.

I am running windows xp

I got help from here about a week or so when i first encountered malware problems. Seemed to have helped for a little while maybe.

I use symantec antivirus. windows defender. and i also run spybot to check for malware. I deleted superantispyware from my system-- however i had to d/l that to post a log for the last technician who assisted me.

really all i get for malware is some tracking cookies that get deleted by spybot.

My computer seems to hang after a certain amount of time and once the cpu usage goes up 100% from the svchost.exe and programs are taking like 5 minutes to open..

I have process explorer so if anyone decides to help im sure youll need some info from this program?

So I have an issue with my computer it all started when my NIC somehow got disabled... and i got it working again however i can no longer access ipconfig or network connections. and now svchost.exe (one of them) is at 90% cpu usage whenever my computer is up if i disable it it also takes the sound away from my games, and all other audio. I have run avast, housecall, and spybot on the machine and have not found anything. Please master techs help an ignorant fool!!

Answer:svchost at 90% cpu usage all the time

Hi Knickfall and welcome to TSF

I used to have an identical problem except that I don't know what NIC is.
All that happened was that the computer is running at like 1/5 its normal speed. Opening up Task Manager I found that svchost takes up 90% CPU. If I terminate it then AoE 3 would be running w/o sounds and stuff.

What I did was what impatient tech users do- reinstall Windows.
I'm not saying that you should do that too- if you have the time to wait for help, explain what NIC is (or maybe I'm the only one that doesn't know what it is) and hang on for help.

Every time I use it, my PC hits 100% CP usage at some stage (with pathetic squeaks from the PSU). This is always attributable to svchost (secsvcs): if I stop this process the usage returns to 1 or 2% and the problem goes away until I next start up. Is there anyway to prevent this particular process from starting? My PC is adequately protected from virus and spyware anyway, which is what this process does.

Hello guys! i have this weird issue, for the past couple of days one of the svchost.exe processes has been using increasingly more ram. 2 days ago it was 400kK, now it's 480kK. All the services attached to it have a PID of 620 and seem to have to do with the internet, ips, authentication etc. However that was not an issue before, my mediocre computer has 4gb of ram and i do a lot of gaming so i tend to monitor ram and cpu usage a lot trying to tweak games so i can get a stable framerate, and i ussualy idled at 6-10% usage, with svchost not even being on the top, and now i idle at 48% usage. Plz do help me as it is making playing fallout 4 on this toaster pweeetty difficult. thanks!

I have a quite new computer so i havent really looked on the taskmanager before. But today when i started the computer i thought it was running slowly so i checked it. Cpu Usage is constantly at around 40%.
there is 2 processes with svchost.exe, one taking around 25% and the other one taking around 12% of cpu usage.

I checked the services on one of the svchost:
Plug and Play
DCOM Server Process Launcher

And i saw in another thread that you could check the threads running under svchost with Process Explorer, the ones consuming cpu power on both the processes had Start Adress:
ntdll.dll!RtlUserThreadStart

My system is Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, AMD Phenom 9550 Quad-core 2.20GHz, 4GB RAM, 64 bit operating system.

Answer:svchost.exe high CPU usage

Unfortunately Vista runs a lot more background services and scheduled tasks than XP. Or put it this way, it keeps your cpu and hd busier than XP did. You can look at this site for ideas which services you may want to disable or set to manual to take off some of the system load.Vista Services Explainededit: btw it's a good idea to set a Restore Point to get back where you started if you shoulddisable something that should not be disabled. Proceed with care. On my system after a few of the obvious ones I started keeping a log. I'd try setting one service to Manual Stopped or Disabled, note it in the log, then run it for awhile. If things started seeming weird I had a note of exactly what I did so I could back it off. If you change multiple things at once it's easy to get lost.

Some of them I can disable, but still, why are they taking too much memory?

Hi,
a few days ago my logitech wireless keyboard started "coughing".
Now I'm trying to figure out why and the windows ressource monitor reveals that svchost.exe is permanently using 1 core (25%) for itself. So far it's been either wuauserv or ssdpserv. Restarting the service doesn't help.

Edit: Even when I stopped the service it still used 25%!

Now I'm trying to figure out what causes this and of course a solution.

Same for the keyboard issue, if those are not connected. (New battery, driver updated, tried a different usb port).

I suspect a failed Win10 upgrade might be the cause. I started it from within windows, it took quite long and in the end it failed telling me it's reverting to Win7.

If I don't find a solution over the weekend I'll just restore a disk image of July 3 - I tried to upgrade on July 4.

thanks for any suggestions,
maran

Hi everyone,

I have this annoying problem I can't fix. Any help would be great. I have a svchost.exe that incrementally (gets greater over time) hogging my cpu bandwidth. Afetr about 4-6 hours of having the system on, it goes up to 100% usage. After running the Tasklist /SVC at the DOS prompt it is identified as a lmhost file. Yes i have run spybot destroying software (ad-aware and Search and Destroy) to no avail. None of my other computers do this. When I shut down the process (PID number sometimes changes) my hard drive then continues intermittantly (and doesn't stop) running but my cpu usage drops back to normal. I don;t know what else to do. I have the latest Mcafee anti-virus and it scans my system once a week. I cant figure it out please help.

thanks.

For the past month now, I've noticed after a while of being on Windows, my games would start getting jerky. I had no idea until just recently what was causing it, but how I have. In the task manager, I spot several svchosts running, which is apparently normal, but one of them seems to be hogging my CPU, even though it's not really taking too much a toll on memory usage. My CPU usage just steadily increases until I close it, then it goes back to really low numbers, but the svchost will respawn. The one I close is marked as as LOCAL SERVICE, while the rest are SYSTEM and one is NETWORK SERVICE. It seems only the LOCAL one is the problem. What can I do to stop this from blasting my CPU all the time?

I'm on XP and I've recently upgraded to SP1.

I think I found an easy way to reduce SVCHOST usage (works for me).

The System Advisor in my TuneUp System Optimizer said '"High memory process from "Svchost.exe"', so I went to my System applet in Control Panel, and clicked the Visual Effects settings on the Advanced tab, chose "Adjust for best performance", and clicked Apply. I then ran System Advisor again...Svchost wasn't there.

I proceed to restart my laptop only to get hit by the mountain of lag once more.
I then transfer to my mac to google SVChost.exe problems to find a lot of people having the same problem. And i have tried the many ways that are suggested. I ran my AVG anti-virus scan , I downloaded Registry Easy and used the free version but when it said to buy it, hoping it would work i pulled out my mastercard. I have this problem of High CPU usage mainly by Svchost.exe it will eventually shut it down. I ran all kinds of antivirus , malware found very little the last program was the ADWcleaner that found 71 infections at first  that seamed to help. But it still has high CPU usage sometimes close to 100% . So far it has not caused a total failure PC crash . The biggest problem is that when you click on to something it takes a while to come up with what you clicked onto and when you check yes the CPU is high . It is rarely below 70%. Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thanks Genel41

I'm sure you have seen the situation in which svchost.exe process is eating all your cpu and ram resources. I read about it, and many articles explain how to disable unnecessary services that are run by svchost.exe so that CPU/RAM is minimized. But, why there are many services that use svchost.exe are present in a windows PC if people aren't using them anyway? Why would something that is there by default steal all my cpu/ram power?

I have few pc's that are technically new(Only one month old), and they have only been loaded by only necessary software(office, antivirus, winrar, acrobat reader, ....etc) for regular office production. svchost started acting up on some of them! It takes 99% of the RAM and I'm left with nothing and the computer slows down. People are asking me to upgrade the ram but I know it is not that.

Quick specs:
Windows 7
i7
4GB ram
Thanks.

Hi
I can only see one nasty in your log.....

Please download the Killbox.

Run Killbox, left click and drag you mouse over the highlighted files below (including filepath) then right click and choose Copy (including filepath) with your mouse, rightclick and choose Copy. Insert your mouse pointer within the box entitled "Full Filepath of File to Delete", rightclick again and choose File > Paste from Clipboard. All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there). If each file exists, it will appear in blue under that window when you click on it. Click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on > "Delete on Reboot" and click on "All Files". Please do this even if this option is already checked. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, click "Yes". Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxcombin.exe

Have "Hijack This" fix all the following items in the list below by placing a check in the appropriate boxes.Confirm that you have only the listed ones checked, then press <Fix checked> and Close HJT.

Hello,

One of the svchost.exe process is using higher memory than usual.

It's using 64,140K which is to much as when I end the process, the physical memory usage drops to around 900mb. It's at 1.34GB at the moment.

I am running Windows Vista.

Yesterday I had a virus but I removed it. I think it may be playing a role in this. I used MalwareBytes to fully scan the computer and it removed one threat which I dont think was related.

Thanks.

I have noticed one machine in our office has always had excessive fan noise, and when I looked into it further I found that one of the svchost.exe processes listed in Task Manager runs with at least 13% CPU usage at all times, constantly. Sometimes it's much higher. The CPU never gets down to an "idle" state with 98-99% resources available, like my machine and every other one I've seen does.

I checked the processes in use by that particular instance of svchost, and found the ones in the attached screen shot. I also ran a check with an updated Malwarebytes and it found nothing.

Any ideas? Is there anything on that list of services that should be disabled?

Hi!

have a look at www.happysysadm.com/2010/11/svchostexe.html for troubleshooting

In any case if you had error with memtest86 and you constantly get a bsod, you probably have to change your faulting RAM module... no workaround for this, sorry.

My computer has its CPU constantly running at near 100% due to SVChost.exe. I'm still able to use the machine, but the machine is slow and the fan is constantly running at high speed (annoying). I've included a screen shot of the services running under this instance of SVChost.exe in case it helps.

I have also gotten several messages from my ISP that it appears that there is a trojan running on my IP. I haven't been able to identify any trojan, but the warnings have gone away since I removed this machine from my home network.

Please help!

Answer:High Cpu Usage From Svchost.exe

I'm not seeing any real malware issues in your logs. I just see some junk to clean up with Hitman Pro. Run it again and activate the free 30 trial license. Then have it cleanup all the Potential Unwanted Programs it reports. The reboot your PC. I don't expect this to change anything though. You could just be have issues with some valid program ( including your browser ) possibly related to attempting software updates....etc.

Hello All,

When I double click my dial up short cut on the desktop in Windows XP Pro, the window says "opening port" instead of Dialing xxx-xxxx. When I go into the Windows Task manager, I see a app called svchost.exe under the Image Name column, user name is system and it is using 99-100 of my CPU usage. Mem Usage is 17,572K. Then after a short time my system locks up. What's going on? How can I fix this problem? I assume that another app is doing something in the background and it is affecting my modem port or something. Thanks.
