Process: csrss.exe (trojan or Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server?)

Question: Process: csrss.exe (trojan or Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server?)

There is a process running on my computer called csrss.exe

I went to http://www.processlibrary.com and looked it up and came up with 2 different things. One says it is a Trojan and needs to be removed. The same exact process name also says it is Microsoft client server runtime server and SHOULD NOT be removed.

How I am supposed to tell the difference so I do not make a mistake by either leaving it alone or removing it???

Relevance 100%
Preferred Solution: Process: csrss.exe (trojan or Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server?)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,Upon searchng the startup list on this website I found the following entry.Clients Server Runtime Process csrss.exe X Added by the W32/Sdbot-CPF worm and IRC backdoor. The process is running on my Vista machine. I ran Malwarebytes and Superantispyware but the process continues to run. Does this mean that the computer is infected? And if so, how do I clean it out? Besides this process there are about 90 others running at the same time. Thanks for the time.

Hi. I have sygate personal firewall and a "Client Server Runtime Process" is running. is it malicious? or is it a normal computer process?

Answer:Client Server Runtime Process

Depends on where it is running from and what the file name of the process is?

Are you referring to c:\windows\system32\csrss.exe

It is a valid Windows Process. See http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/csrss/

I have two of these processes running taking up 1672 and 2396 K memory respectively, this fluctuates with what is open. I tried right click “Open File Location” which seems to have no effect. When I chose “End Process” I got a BSOD. I restarted and have been using the computer normally for an hour or so.

Answer:Solved: How many Client Server Runtime Process should be running?

Hi, this is a system file and having two instances of it in processes is normal, you cannot access this files location through the task manager, this is also normal.

What problems are you having, and why do you suspect something is wrong with your system, please give us more information.

Greetings,
I am currently running XP Home with SP2. Recently I have noticed that when I right click on a .txt file and scroll down to 'Open With' one of the options is to open it with 'Client Server Runtime Process'. When I try to open the file with this it gives me an error stating that this application cannot be run in Win32 mode. Any idea what this is and wether it is likely to be creating any other problems with my system???

Cheers

Answer:'Client Runtime Server Process' in 'Open With' menu

Hello Boxy and Welcome to TSF

Your system may be infected with the W32/Sdbot-LD Worm. Please follow these instructions

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:

Panda ActiveScan

RAV AntiVirus

Housecall. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

You may also want to post a HJT log for one of our experts to look over.

Download and install: HiJackThis 1.99.1.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.

Create a New Thread and include a fresh HJT log in HiJackThisLog Help Forum and Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into your new topic.

Is there a shortcut to the Microsoft Exchange Server properties within Outlook 2003?

Usually have to go through TOOLS - OPTIONS - MAIL SETUP - "View or change existing e-mails accounts" - click "change" on next screen - then click on Next settings - THEN I am on the Microsoft Exchange Server settings....

Any easier way to get to this screen?

thanks !

Answer:Shortcut To Client Microsoft Exchange Server Properties?

Try going to the Mail applet via the Control Panel.

Start >> Control Panel >> Mail

That should bring up the Mail Setup - MS Exchange Settings applet. From there you have the choices to access the E-mail Accounts, Data Files, and Profiles applets.

Hi,

I am having an issue with offline files created offline syncing back to the server. I have set up a network share to be available offline on a client computer. All files are available offline without issue. Here is the issue however. If I set the folder to work offline any file I create in the folder when it is offline just disappears when the folder comes back online, there are no conflicts or sync failures reported in sync center. If I create a new folder offline the folder does sync back to the server. Any changes made to an existing file are also replicated back to the server once the share is back online. So the issue is only with newly created files when the share is offline. I have not been able to replicate this error on any other file server in our environment, However I have recreated the issue with multiple shares with multiple Win 7 clients on this file server.

Steps taken so far.

Checked and reset permission levels on the share.
Recreated new shares from scratch for testing.
Disabled and enabled offline files on the client computer and cleared the offline cache.
Check various registry entry settings.
Disabled cashing on the File server.
Tested with XP the issue does not exist with XP.

I have spent hours researching this error online to no avail.

The clients are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
The File server is Server 2003 Standard 32 bit with SP2

Any help or ideas would be most welcome.

Answer:Offline Folder sync issue, Win 7 Client Server 2003 Flie Server.

I've seen the complaints about this problem but with no clear resolution. There are some hot fixes listed that may help, updating to Windows 7 SP1 is supposed to help in some cases but nothing seems for certain.

No way for me to recreate this problem but apparently others have the same problem.

Hi I'm working on a client/server with the Java programming language and trying to figure out how to protect my server. With my current Virus/Firewall protection suite theres nothing I can do to keep out unwanted Java applications on the port I choose to allow the Java SE Binary through for clients accessing the server application. ESET Smart Security 4 is what I am using. Does anybody know of a security suite that would allow only a specific Java application to get through the firewall? I'm not to sure on this subject because my firewall is identifying any Java application as only the "Java SE Binary" and not I'm sure if you can even really name your Java application like you would something you would write in C++. Any information would be appreciated, thank you.

I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

2. Also, I know that Windows XP has an RDP client, I've used before on many occasions, but what about all the Windows 2000 clients that I still have out there. What should I do for them to access the new Terminal Servers?

Answer:Terminal Server license server(s)? RDP client for Windows2K?

I'm not 100% sure on #1, but I believe that the TS licensing becomes integrated into the AD, so if one DC goes down, the other one will be able to check licensing. On another note, if you are using the TS for administration only, I don't believe you needs the TS Licensing to be installed.

For #2, you can download the latest version of the RDP client from MS's website. It should also be available through Windows Updates, although I think Win2K isn't supported any longer, other than Critical Updates.

A friend is moving his business, and the new business park that he's setting up shop in does not have anyway to get any wired internet to his building, excluding a T1 line, which he can't justify the cost of.

One windows 7 machine acts as the server, primarily for Quickbooks database, and there are two other windows 7 machines that are clients, reading off said database.

He's getting one of those usb dongles for wireless internet service, for the server only (the other two computers will be tethered to a smartphone for internet for QB and windows updates periodically).

They do NOT want to share the servers wireless connection to the other machines.

My only concern was if the server will continue to try to check the LAN for internet connectivity, or will it check both network connections when one fails, or is there a setting I can tell them to change to ensure it knows to go to the wireless dongle for internet all the time, without interfering with the workstations talking to the server over the LAN to get to the database?

The setup at the old office was business class DSL, they are using a relatively new Linksys router, which had the DSL authentication information.

Thank you!

Answer:LAN network for server/client only, USB hotspot for server internet.

I managed to find a solution this morning, for anyone that's interested, the whole article is here: Multiple Network Connections at the Same Time on Windows | Ivan Zlatev

But the short answer is, under the advanced properties of TCP/IP v4, uncheck automatic metric, set your internet to a value of 1, and the LAN to a value of 9999.

hi folks,Im running XP pack 3 on a toshiba laptop satelite 85. While searching a sight on auto repairs I got a message pop up from my virus program(avira) telling me there was a virus in the page and did I want to deny access-I said yes and it popped up about 5-6 more times before I could click out of page. I thought by denying access the problem was solved but I ran malwarebytes and avira to be sure.Malware found nothing but avira found 2 viruses which I chose to quarantine.Avira told me I have to restart the computer to complete the action-which I did. When it rebooted and got to my desktop page there were no icons but a small window that said -to protect your computer data execution prevention has closed microsoft front page server administrator client-it gave me no choices except to click close then another window asked if I wanted to send this error to microsoft. I did.I rebooted in safe mode and ran every virus program I have to no avail-I tried backdating to another save point but it kept saying it did not go back to that point so nothing has changed. I cant figure out where to go next so Im coming to the experts for help-HELPthank you-Pete

Answer:data execution prevention-microsoft front page server administrator client

Do you have a backup method? At this point it would be a good idea of doing a backup, if yew can.Other wise, reboot in safe mode. Open task manager & look for any process that might be bogus and stop it. Suspend all AV and spy ware blockers. Of course, you want to be off the network. Now run just one AV Scan program in Safe mode. Then reboot and tray again  with another Scanner. If you can not get it this way, you will have to do a Hijack log. But first try a scan in safe mode. Yeah, I know, some will tell you that it don't work that way. Yes, it does. Trust me on this.I would go with MalwareBytes in safe mode.

Hi,

I am running Windows XP 2002 Service Pack 2. I have no idea how, but I believe I aquired a Trojan, Malware, or Virus of some sort.

I was running Mozilla Firefox when two windows popped up, one of which stated,

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needs to close."

The other window said, "NT Authority\System Error Message: "This system is shutting down. Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server process launcher service terminated unexpectedly."

I shutdown the computer manually before the timer ran out, and restarted it. I disconnected the internet before the restart, and immediately ran Spybot Search and Destroy. Spybot left me with 5 malware results and one trojan. The trojan was in the registry. I tried to remove everything, however it said the trojan could not be removed because it was in use. I selected to run Spybot S&D on next restart.

I then ran Ad-Aware SE. Halfway through my computer put up the Blue Screen of Death that stated "Windows has shutdown to prevent further damage to the operating system."

I shut the computer off at that point, and restarted it a few hours later. Spybot ran on startup, before login to my user account, and yielded no results. The computer restarted again halfway through the Ad-Aware scan. I restarted a third time and this time it has stayed on since with no crashes, and no malware in any scans.
I ran Hijack this and here is my log.

Answer:Client(s) can't connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 server

You were on the right track, but having the server listen on localhost/127.0.0.1 may or may not be what you want. Regardless, you need to tell SQL to bind to the ethernet interface since you're trying to connect to it over the network.

Do a netstat -a on the server and see if you have 0.0.0.0:1433 or the ethernet interface:1433. You could also do telnet serverip 1433.

If it's not listening on the desired interface, you need to look up how tell SQL to bind to that interface (I don't know, I'm not familiar with it either).

these shutdowns seem to occur spontaneously, I can't figure out what triggers them. Ad-Aware only found some cookies and nothing major during its last scan, and the problem persists. I just read about using start-->run "shutdown -a" to kill the countdown. here's my hjt log:

Hi,
When a trojan appears on malwarebytes, it says it was made by the process crss.exe. I noticed this process is vital to the system, and all the Antivirus Programs I have used do not detect it. I read in a forum that if it runs out of another file location than system32 in the windows folder, It is a virus. But the process runs out of system32. The only reason for this would be that the file was manipulated with. It constantly redirects me from my search engine, im lucky i have malwarebytes blocking the hosts, but there is no fix. Is there anyway that i can delete the current file and install a new, clean one?

Thank you In advance,
Gabriel

The only information I could find comparing the two was in this article here:

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Windows2003-Distributed-File-System.html

Windows 2003 offers a revamped version of the Distributed File System found in Windows 2000, which has been improved to better performance and add additional fault tolerance, load balancing and reduced use of network bandwidth. It also comes with a powerful set of command-line scripting tools which can be used to make administrative backup and restoration tasks of the DFS namespaces easier. The client windows operating system consists of a DFS client which provides additional features as well as caching.Click to expand...

Does anybody know a little more about the benefits of using a win2k3 server? Do all servers involved with the DFS root have to be win2k3 also? Most likely I will be using win2k server to set up a DFS domain root, but I can possibly get licences for 2k3.

Server OS Windows Server 2012 Essentials
Client OS: Windows 7 Professional

I recently upgraded from Home Server 2011 to Essentials 2012. This required me to create a Domain which I did, and the other PC's connect with no problem. Using the same procedure to connect my main machine, and it does not see any other computers that are in the domain when I go to network places, not even the server. I have checked that the primary DNS is pointing to 2012 Essentials server. I can connect to the other PCs by manually typing in the other PC names.

Another problem is that I cannot access the shared folders in the Dashboard. I log in as an administrator and have checked permissions. When I try to access these shared folders it gives me the access denied message.

Does anyone know what is going on with these two problems?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:One client not seeing other computers in the Domain. Client OS Win7, Server OS 2012

I didn't use 2012 Essentials yet - only regular 2012 and domain is working without any problem.
Main thing is that client pc must have dns connected to server - on server you can set forwarding for external internet access.
If you have problems with domain you could try rejoin to domain on client PC - you'll verify then that everything is configured properly - I can recommend tool called Profile Wizard http://www.forensit.com/Profwiz/ It's great for rejoining to domain or when you want to switch to other domain without lose your profile.
Maybe Dasboard require for local administrator privileges to work properly ?

I am running a Dell computer with Windows XP home with 4 users. I have no access to a Boot CD or Windows install disc. I don't believe they ever sent one. Here are my problems.

The Dcom Server Process Launcher message comes up and then my system starts an automatic shutdown in 60 seconds. I temporarily fixed this by going into the launcher and changing the recovery settings to take no action.

I am having also having Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services has encountered a problem message pop up.

Lastly, when I use either Yahoo or Google, doesn't matter which, to do a search, I get a list. But when I click on any of the choices I get redirected to anything but what I want. If I copy and past the link I'm fine.

Yesterday I ran Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and got errors that it fixed and when run again showed everything was fine. However, today I was the only one of the four users who could log on. The others just got a blue screen. So I ran the MBA again and it found 147 errors. Again I corrected. Still having issues so I did a system restore ... didn't help. Restored back to now and come to you. Here is the dds log.

Hello.I have a Gateway Laptop running Vista. In the last couple weeks I have received noticeable issues mainly related to my browser (both with Firefox and Internet Explorer). I get numerous pop ups and often pages won't load properly. My friend used he's flash Drive on my computer and the next day in lab class the college computer scanned the drive as having the W32 Trojan. This leads me to believe that the same Trojan is on my system (and came form my system). I went to Process Library.com and typed every process in. I am going be moving all the shared folders on my Server 2003 file server to my new Server 2008 VM and want to do it in a way that will allow my clients to be able to access them as if nothing happened. I have been reading about the Windows FSMT (File Server Migration Toolkit) http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=10268 and it will copy over all the permissions and everything but I am not sure how to go about making sure the client will still be able to access the shares especially if they have mapped any of them. If i change the IP and host name of the new machine to the old one after the migration is complete and then shutdown the old server will everything run smoothly? What is the best way to go about doing this?

Answer:Migrate Server 2003 file server shares to new machine (Server 2008)

you can do this or you can change DNS so that the old server name points to the new server IP. You need to turn off StrictNameChecking

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters]
"DisableStrictNameChecking"=dword:00000001

this means that you can name the server what ever you want but if you go to the old host name it will also take you to the new server.

Don't forget this needs to be completed and rolled out after the users log off but before they log back in

As old user move on and new users join make sure that you link them to the share via the new host name so eventually the old host name is fased out and you can remove the above reg key.

Hi All

I want all incoming and outgoing data from my PC to be more secure, so I
I want to set up an SSH server on my Home PC using Cygwin, but I also want the SSH client to be on my PC. Is this possible, or do I need to have an external/second PC to act as the server? Also, if all my internet traffic goes through this SSH server, how will it affect my normal browsing? Will I have issues connecting to my regular websites (youtube, facebook, msn, yahoo, gmail, etc etc)?

Thank you

Answer:SSH server and client on the same PC

Umm...that is not going to make anything more or less secure. SSH is for creating secure connections to remote systems. (Mainly for administrating) It creates a VPN in a way. It does not make your browser usage secure. Connecting to an SSH server on the local machine is pointless anyways. You are already on the local machine!

Hi guys, I'm pulling my hair out here trying to understand Winsock headers.

My lecturer must have a sick sense of humour as he's set us the task of writing a UDP client/server after only studying C++ for 2 months.

I've managed to get a server up and listening to a socket. I've got the client to send the message and the server to pick it up and print it to screen.

The remaining horrors are

1) Read the IP address of sender and print to screen... just reading to a vairiable is the bit I'm stuck at.

2) Echoing the message back to sender and reading it...I'm a bit lost on this - can this be done with a simple swap from a send to receive socket? And how does the server get the info to send to client - may be related to 1) above.

Any help you guys can give would be great.

Question: Server or Client?

Im thinking about getting windows server 2008 and building a machine for it to use as well, a server, for storage and hosting multiplayer games.

So my question is, how much faster or smoother would a dedicated game server run on a actual server machine rather than a peer to peer client machine?

Would i beable to notice the benefits? Would it be a waste of money?

Answer:Server or Client?

It would be a huge waste of money in a home setting IMO. There is very little to be gained, and the server versions of Windows are pretty costly.

Hi, my ultimate goal for my questions is so that my laptop can access my home LAN anywhere as long as it has the Internet. For example, I have network shares named \\A\Z, \\B\D on my home network. My laptop, when it is in the LAN can just map those shares. Well, I want the exact same kind of direct access anywhere with the internet.

I've already gotten an account with No-IP, so the dynamic IP problem is taken care of. I've also created an incoming VPN connection on my LAN server and a VPN connection on my laptop and the connection actually got connected, but the subnet mask is always 255.255.255.255 and I cannot access the LAN.

The solution I'm trying right now is to use Windows Server 2008 R2 gotten from DreamSpark and Microsoft ForeFront (actually its predecessor ISA Server which I got from an IT course I've taken) which amount other things is a VPN Server. However, there must be an easier solution than to use Enterprise grade software right?

By the way, I do know there are easier solutions like Dropbox, but I just want to know how to do it.

Answer:VPN client and server

You need to make sure that you've got your routing and remote access server role configured correctly. You should be receiving an IP that allows for browsing the network, although netbios doesn't always work easily depending on the network topology. A couple of simple issues I've encountered are things like trying the VPN from within the network (rarely works), connecting from a network with the same subnet as the one you're connecting to (having the internal network 192.168.1.x locally and the network being connected to having the same 192.168.1.x address range), and lastly having firewalls not play nicely. I don't think you're having that issue since you've received an IP, albeit one that has a restrictive subnet mask. Start by checking the routing and remote access configuration on the server to make sure it's handing out the correct information to remote clients.

I've built several desktop computer (one of which is pretty high-end). But I've never worked with a server before, and I don't know what the differences are. I also need to get this done pretty quickly -- like I need to have a list of parts by next week. Below are the requirements, and further down is a list of parts I used to build the high-end computer about 3yrs ago. I'm thinking the server could just use updated versions of those parts. They were all purchased at www.newegg.com

Hard to explain what I want to do in title, so here it is. I want a specific client on my network to connect to a VPN server that has an internet (non NAT) IP address, and I want that client's ports to be accessible via that external IP. Ex: Say I have a VPN server running on a VPS that has the IP 123.123.123.123 and the VPN client is behind a NAT at 10.11.10.10, and is listening on say, port 80, I want to be able to connect to 123.123.123.123:80 and it goes to 10.11.10.10:80.

Is this possible to do? It does not actually have to be a VPN or even encrypted. I'm thinking a VPN would be the easiest way, but not sure if it's even possible.

Basically, what I'm trying to do is make my Wii U work for online play, and it requires a LOT of ports to be forwarded, some of them are already in use on my network. The port forward requirements are quite ridiculous, the ENTIRE UDP range, and a bunch of TCP ports including 80, 443, which I am already using for other stuff.

So basically I just want to give my Wii U a dedicated outside IP address for it to listen to, but my ISP only gives 1 IP. I have a dedicated server that has several IPs, so I could basically setup a VM on it and use one of those IPs.

Essentially from a network standpoint the Wii will be in that VM.

Or is there an easier way to do this?

Also I already have a VPN server setup on my local network (where the Wii is) so if there's a way to do this where the internet VM connects to the... Read more

First the good news:

I have three computers on this network, 2 Win2k worksatations and a Win2k server. Also, there is a 4 port Linksys router between the cable modem and the rest of the computers.

All computers are running TCP/IP with Obtain IP address automatically enabled. All computers can access the Internet and the router sees all three computers. It has also assigned them internal IP addresses (192.168.1.100 /101 / 102).

From the server I can ping all three addresses and get positive results. I can also search for the computers and find them, albeit not the same way for both. A simple search shows one and I need to use the *.* to find the other.

Now the bad news:

Neither workstation sees the server, even with a ping. And when I go to the properties (right click My Computer/Network ID/ properties) I am not able to join to the domain. It says the Network Path is not valid. And yes, I've added the computers to my server.

What might I be missing? Help please

For many years I have been using Ventrilo as a non-SIP based Voip program due to its simplicity. It works great, but the codec is dated, and the program is loaded in so many proprietary shackles it is ridiculous (aside from that creepy tracking feature.) However, one nice aspect is that it uses TCP for its voice packets (so they all arrive sounding normal.)

I tried using Mumble, but it only has a TCP mode as an afterthought and you cannot configure servers to force TCP mode for all clients. I do like how it is encrypted though (few actually bother with this.)

Does anyone know of something like Vent/TS/Mumble that uses Opus or a similar high quality codec, without tracking features, and uses TCP? I would really prefer not to have to program something entirely myself...

Once I open up the terminal server connection, the VPN connection will not connect. Now, reverse logic, if I open the VPN connection first, the terminal server client connection will not work. Is there a way to have both open at the same time with the OS's I have currently? Or is there something I need to change to get this to work?

I have a small domain set up in my house for my MCSA studies. I'm using Virtual PC and have a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition DC/DNS server and one XP Pro Client. Server01 and Client01.

I have created a User account for myself in Active Directory and am a member of the Domain Admins. Client01 is shown as a member of the domain both in AD and in it's own System Properties. I can ping the server from the client and access it in My Network Places. However, I cannot ping the Client from the server, nor can I access Client01 from My Network Places on the Server.

I am also able to log on to the client using my domain username and password. This has me stumped.
There is no firewall running on either machine. I even checked IE security settings but that isn't the problem. Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a strange scenario here and could use some suggestions/advice:

I have a high watt/ high power system I don't want on all the time, but I do want to game from and sometimes develop (program) on. Lets call this system A.

I have another ultra low watt system I could leave on all the time which I want to serve all my server purposes for these two computers. Backup, html serving, ssh serving, sql server. But the catch is that it needs to service MS and *nix at the same time. Lets call this system B.

I was thinking of running some version of Windows that allows servicing of a ASP and SQL servers for 2008, with a virtual box (virtual machine) running Ubuntu on system B.

Then I was thinking of running on system A some version of Windows that is good enough for gaming and at the same time will interact fully with the services that system B provides.

What version of Windows is sufficient for system B? What version of Windows is sufficient for system A?

(What I have right now is a Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM, and Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Preorder, but I'd be willing to buy whatever else would be required)

Hello All,

I took over supporting a sm. business that has 7 workstations, 2 networked printers and 2 local printers. The bldg. has a DSL connection and the modem goes through a router. All the workstations and networked printers connect to a single 16 port switch which is connected to a server running MS SBS 2003 r2. My question is where should the internet connect to? If I connect it to the switch everyone has internet which is fine but shouldn't I connect it to a secondary NIC in the server instead? What services would I need to configure to allow that type of configuration? Oh BTW, the server is set as a DHCP, file server.
With the internet connected to the switch directly users are reporting slow response when accessing shared files on the server, etc.

Any comments are appreciated.

Answer:Client-Server Networking

If you don't need to control Internet access, the simpler configuration will just be to connect the router directly to the switch and let it be the DHCP server. Disable the DHCP server on the SBS server.

Hi all,
I am currently working on a project that is giving me trouble for quite some time now. Using c++ and VS2010 I wrote a client and server application that is TCP/IP based on a really basic level. The project idea is simple. A server sends some image data to
a client. (Later on to multiple clients) The amount of data may change depending on how fast the server can acquire images (e.g. webcam 30fps ~30 MB/s or more). By design the client/server connection must not be delayed sine all delayed data is immediately
thrown away. I know some of you will say "use UDP" but since it obviously should also work with TCP and I don't want to lose any packages at all I want to use TCP.
During server/client execution I now noticed some unexpected image freezes. Observing the process monitor's/task manager's I/O tab I noticed a 5 second delay during each of the freeze periods. These freezes are occurring randomly and I cannot reproduce them
at will. Here is a log print of the data rate per seconds.

the error is occurring with each server/client combination.
Then I checked the same (portable)... Read more

Hi rhodanos,
Sorry for the confusion in my steps, for steps three, it can be also applied into the Windows Vista later. So you can try the command on Windows 7 for disabling SMBv2.
After that, please let me know the result.
Besides, I'm not familiar with the script, so I'm afraid I couldn't help you to check this.
Thanks for your understanding.

Is it not possible to make a program be both a client & server? I'm new to the winsock control & just finished reading PINO's basic intro. I did the peer-to-peer project for client/server chat. However, I want the program to be both a server & a client so two people don't have to worry about one being the server & one being the client.

I have the code for the program to listen. However, when I put the code for it to make a connection & click the button for that code, it states "invalid operation at current state".

So is it possible to have a program be both a client & server? I think it is and maybe it needs 2 winsock controls? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here you can find an example in C++: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cpp/WSFileTransfer.aspx?df=100&forumid=288198&exp=0&select=1435288

If you want to run client and server from the same exe at the same time, you should use threads (or fork).

Going with the suggestions of a few users on these forums, I've been trying out VirtualBox for my VM needs. So far I really like it.

Now, I am attempting to familiarize myself with Windows Server 2003. So I've set up a VM for that, and another for XP Professional. I want to get the two communicating each other so I can play with permissions and other such things.

Both VM's are set up, and both seem to be running fine, but I can't get them to communicate. I already used a guide to set up Server 2003 as a domain controller, and I'd like to XP to connect to it, but I can't quite figure out how. Whenever I attempt to do so (going through the System area on the control panel), it says the domain isn't valid.

Sorry if this all seems like a noobie question, but I've never used Server 2003 outside of a classroom (and the classroom experience was less than spectacular).

Answer:Need some help with a client/server VM setup.

When you setup the 2003 server, did you give it a static IP address, with the DNS entry as itself?
Did you setup DHCP on the server as well?, if you did, then you have to DISABLE DHCP on your router? (guessing your using a router on your LAN)

The XP machine is probably getting an IP address from your router, that has no idea where the domain is, which is why you get the 'not valid' message.
You can forget setting up the DHCP service on the router if you want to set your XP machine as a static IP, on the same range as the servers IP, but with the DNS entry on the XP machine, being the servers IP.
When the XP machine has the server as its DNS, the XP machine asks 'wheres domain XYZ' and it asks the server, which replies back, Im domain XYZ, when the XP machine asks your router, it has no idea where the domain XYZ is.

Why can't a client get internet when the server is down.

They will not have email servers for each client progrem, but I suspect that you are talking about three different services there. On only one of them is your ISP acting as an email server. For the other two, your ISP is just providing connectivity to the internet, with the email servers being hosted by other organisations (goolgle for GMail and Microsoft for outlook.com).

Thunderbird is an email client program and may well be pointed at the ISPs email server, to collect email from the email account that comes bundled with the connection.

ISPs will frequently have many servers forming their email infrastructure, but apart from having different functions in the grand scheme of things, they the only split from a customer PoV will be between home user and business email.

x64
ps "Outlook" could also refer to an email client program that could collect email from your ISP email account. I was assuming that your use of Outlook refered to Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail) - the web based free email provider.

Answer:Does an ISP have a different server for each email client?

Your ISP has no way of knowing what email client you are using.

I've spent the best part of a month trying to get a VPN connection from a Windows 7 Ultimate client to a Windows 8.1 Pro server.
After all of the below I have today managed to get a VPN connection from the W7 client to the W8.1 server, but Network and Sharing Center on W8.1 says 'RAS (Dial In) Interface: Public Network. Access Type: No internet access', and, although the W7 client shows that the connection was successful, I can't see the VPN network (I have no actual access to ANYTHING on the W8.1 PC).
Below are details of the configurations.
**********
Connections:
The W7 client is connected to the internaet via 'Internet Sharing' on my Nokia Lumia 625.
The W8.1 Server is connected via my Virgin Super Hub router.
So both the server and the client have different WAN 'external' IPs

The WAN IP, although I haven't paid for static, ALWAYS stays the same.
After multiple failures, I've changed the default gateway on the server (W8.1) from 192.168.0.1 to 10.11.12.1 so as to avoid IP clashing.(I can get access to the internet so there appears to be no connectivity issues associated with the change of Gateway IP).
I've opened the following ports on my Virgin Super Hub:
1723/TCP
47/TCP & UDP
50/TCP & UDP
500/UDP
4500/UDP
443/TCP
1701/UDP
501/TCP & UDP
ALL pointing to the W8.1 PC at 10.11.12.6
(Initially I opened only 1723, but with no success, it was only when I opened the others that I connected to the server.)
I've allowed pass through on Ipsec, PPTP. a... Read more

I currently have two machines, xp and me, set up as a workgroup

My question is if anyone knows off the top of their head, any problems I am liable to encounter. Just wondering if its even worth the trouble, since what I have works OK, it just doesn't offer all the options that I am looking to play with.

Answer:server/client network using xp/me

XP can't be set up as a domain controller and does not control or maintain user accounts logins or other resources. you need a server to act as a domain controller not a workstation.

Hey there,

I am in an odd situation. I like to play Warrock, a free online multiplayer game, check it out btw. My lappy has 1 Wireless card, i use to connect to crappy router.

when router stalls i have to switch it off/on again, this causes my network adapter to get in "media disconnected state" which causes warrock to prompt me "No connectivity" and throw me out of the game.

So i though a good solution would be to create a VPN host on my XP pro. Then crate a VPN client and connect to the local VPN host. This part works well. This way I always have atleast 1 always-on connection so I can reset my router and when packets start getting through again my game will resume from same location. happy happy

also I enabled ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the wireless connection so VPN host can forward packets to the Internet via it.

the problem is it doesn't work. while my VPN client is in connected mode i cannot access internet even via firefox. if you need to know metrics or other info following is dump for "netstat -r". Here the 10.15.8.1 is my static IP of my router. and 192.158.2.109 is dynamic on VPN client connection.

Hey all I have 6 workstations and one server and we’re having trouble keeping the workstations connected to the shared drives on our server. I think that it might be a DNS error but don’t know how to isolate it. Our network is configured as follows:

6 clients connecting to our router and 1 server also connected to our router and our router then is connected to our modem. The DNS on our server is set to be static with a preferred DNS of 127.x.x.x and nothing for the secondary. Our client machines are using the DNS provided to us by our ISP which is 68.x.x.x and a secondary of 68.x.x.x.

Now my question is should our server be using the ISP DNS settings or should the client machines be using the server DNS setting or should they all be using the same thing and if so how will that impact our connecting to our domain and or the internet?

Also you might be able to shed some light on the fact that our windows 2000 clients seem to be able to connect to our server much faster and more efficient than our WinXP boxes and don't lose connectivity. Do you know why that is?

Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, need some help once again.

Heres my situation. I have 2 computers, a laptop and a desktop. I do a majority of my schoolwork on my desktop, but when I'm at the library I'd like to vpn into my desktop from my laptop to do some of the work when needed.

My desktop is behind a linksys router, and I've forwarded plenty of ports...1723, 500, 50-51, to the desktop computer, and I've set up a VPN connection thing on the desktop.

Now, I can connect through a VPN connection to the desktop, except I cannot do anything once I'm connected except browse the web. I can't access the desktop by computer name, I can't access the printer on the desktop, I can't do anything.

How come I cant browse anything? The desktops name is jbove, so when I drop a start, run, \\jbove, it just gives me the "can't be found etc" message.

When TESTUSER connects, I want to only let them see their own personal folder, read-only system folders/files and limit their capabilities. Another question is when I log in as ADMIN, it will let me create a new folder, but it won't let me copy and paste anything in it. I use Internet Explorer to FTP like this:

ftp://ADMIN:[email protected]:21

I basically want the user to be able to read-only certain files/folders, but be able to create their own as well.

Our network has 27 PCs, all clients, hooked up to switches, a router and cable modem. Mostly WinXP, some Win98. Inter-office email is handled by MSMail, which is not supported under xp. When there is a fix for me to apply, it requires me to go to each station. That used to be okay when we had 10 PC's but we're headed for 30, and net admin is not my only title. I thought I'd ask for opinions. You can answer one or all of my questions...every opinion will be helpful.

1. At what number of nodes does a client-client network no longer function well?
2. What are some of the pros and cons of using a server-client network as opposed to client-client?
3. Do you think administering a server-client network is more or less time-consuming than client-client?
4. Do you know of a website or two where I can go to get more information on this subject?

Thank you for your time.

I installed server 2003 enterprise on a local system here on my network and installed two NICs. One onboard other PCI. what I was originally planning on doing was running a cable from the modem into on NIC, then on the other NIC, have a cable run to the uplink on the hub. Then have the computers on my network connect to the hub. What I foolishly didn't realize is that I will need a crossover cable to run from the NIC into the uplink on the hub. Its 10:30 right now and i'm not going to be able to get a crossover cable tonight, so i'll have to wait until tomorrow.

I guess in short my question is, will this setup work like this when I get the crossover cable? Can I do this setup without a crossover cable? I was wanting the server to be a domain controller, and have the other computers authenticate through it and install a NAT etc. Kinda new to the client/server network but i'm learning.. any help is appreciated

It should. To test it, connect the server to a regular, non-uplink port, and the other machines to other non-uplink ports. That should work too.
