spyware scanner found unwanted programs not listed in programs and features II

Question: spyware scanner found unwanted programs not listed in programs and features II

I'm running Windows 7 and a few months back had to remove Snap.do and some other unwanted programs.  I managed to get them off, I beleive.  I'm not sure, but I beleive I had to delete some folders to get them off fully. Subsequent Superantispyware runs did not report any unwanted programs.
This morning Avast alerted me Snap.do was back.  I opened a browser and confirmed the home page was hijacked.  Avast said it could remove it for me and when I looked, the home page was back and Snap.do wasn't on my list of programs in control panel>prorams and features.
I ran malware bytes and nothing too bad was found.  I ran Superantispyware and it reported regcleaner pro, Advanced Sysrem Protector and AppsHat Mobile Apps were installed.  I let the Super antispyware try to remove them and also cleaned out some tracking cookies.  I cehcked programs and the 3 weren't there.  Re-running Super antispyware however keeps reporting they're in my system.

Boopme kindly walked me through the DDS process and I'm posting the logs
I did post on another help site before knowing the rule of no posting elsewhere.  I closed that thread, so please do not shut this down.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Any ideas?  Was my original removal not successful?  Can these apps hide?

Hello Splungee, this one is a bit tricky. Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic. If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Some (3, out of maybe 20) of my installed Programs, all working perfectly well, are not listed in Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

Any ideas on how to rectify this, please?

Thank you.

Answer:Some installed Programs not listed in Programs and Features...

Some programs do not really "Install" by using normal installation process by writing entries in the Registry and so don't show up as uninstallable. "Portable programs" are an example. If they don't have Uninstall.exe (or similar file) in it's folder, you can just delete folder and shortcut.

I am having a problem with the Windows Update Error code 643 and believe I need to uninstall some versions of .Net Framework that are in conflict with each other. I am running Win 7 Pro, SP1. The "ONLY" version of .Net Framework shown in Control Panel>Programs and Features is V4.6.1. HOWEVER, when I run The dot net setup verification tool it validates virtually all versions on my system. My understanding is that v4 and any version of 4.5 can't co-exist, which would mean I need to uninstall them, but I can't do that because they are not listed as installed programs. Does anyone know how I can uninstall these versions so I can try to fix my update issues with updates to 4.6.1?

Just when I thought I had computers figured out, after having built several from guides on this website and troubleshooted many problems with other guides, I have run into a problem that I'm sure has an embarrassingly obvious solution.

I am trying to uninstall winamp, and naturally I attempted Control Panel - Programs and Features - Winamp - uninstall, the normal method of uninstalling programs. But winamp is simply not listed there, and every guide at winamp's site or a google search starts with that method and offers no others. I know winamp is still there because it still opens and runs and associates every file with it.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I just want to uninstall winamp.

thanks, Charlie

It began when I was browsing and out-of-the-blue a popup saying "HDD Failure - etc. etc. We recommend you restart your machine" came up, it looked legit so I checked out my PC to see some desktop items (not all) had dissappeared. Naturally I restarted machine and went on my normal user;

- my desktop was completely black and their were no icons, their were only a few programs listed in all programs aswell.

- A program called "Windows XP Fix" was running, it was obviously false software, I managed to delete its root (i think) from All Users / Application Data / 01032483.exe (or something)

- A program called browser+ was in my All Programs which it let me uninstall.

- If i go to a different user there's desktop icons and i can use my browser (still limited All Programs though) but if i click on a link it sends me to different web pages like canadasasquach.com or matalan.com (lol?) it's really messed :/)

Stuff is attached I appreciate your help <3

I have been noticing some ridiculous lag that occurs at seemingly random times. It's not as bad as it was before I ran malwarebytes; however I still get random spikes of lag. Usually when this happens I see certain programs in the task manager that I almost never see. They are listed below:

dllhost.exe *32 (multiple instances)
dpnsvr.exe *32
dllhst3g *32
ctfmon.exe *32
NAPSTAT.exe

Hello, I have a few programs in Autostart that I'd like to get rid of, however, MSCONFIG does not show them in the autostart menu. So I want to know if there's a program or something that I can remove the programs with? It's MSN, some kind of adware/virus called savedump.exe and mysqld-nt.exe that I used for a game server before. mysqld and MSN is shown in the MSCONFIG autostart, but everytime I check them off they auto-apply themselves the next time I restart.

Welcome to TSG

Please click Here to download HijackThis to your desktop.

Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.

It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.

The program will open automatically after installation.

You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.

Close all other windows except HijackThis.

Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile" When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here.

Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Answer:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

Code:
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Cheers,
Jamey

I have Windows 7 Prof x64.

My question is, when displaing all software installed and choosing more columns of information to display, they don't stay. For example, choosing Location column. Getting out of the installed programs list and then returning to it, the Location column is gone.

Is there some what to get the columns to be persistent?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Question about Windows 7 Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

The Programs and Features listing is shown to you by the Explorer app. Each time that you open/close the Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a folder (or a special view/list like the Programs and Features listing), Explorer tries to write info to the registry about how Explorer was showing you that folder. Windows (file) Explorer tries to write this "how to display a folder" info at other times besides just closing an Explorer window, but I'll not go into all of that.

Microsoft has not solved the problem that happens when these places in the registry get too big. When this happens, you may see the problem that you are experiencing - that of no longer being able to store the layout/view/column width/column selection/... info in the registry.

Below is video that I made showing registry keys being made. (I'm not suggesting that you mess with the registry.) Notice that new keys are made when visiting the folder named Temp. Deleting this Temp folder does not remove those registry keys. If you close Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a compressed folder (a ZIP file), the Explorer app tries to make keys so that it can remember how it last showed you that folder. If you delete or move that ZIP folder to another location, the original registry keys remain. So you can see how this area of the registry can fill up.

edit: I had to make this video again. I hope that I covered all of the original points.

One solution is to remove all of the entries/keys in the areas of ... Read more

I recently opened up my uninstall list and a lot of my programs are missing i tried restoring my computer to before i downloaded quick time (which i think is what the issue was) but the restore came up with an error 0xc0000022 saying it failed to restore, i tried an sfc scan and it came up with something being corrupt that would be fixed on restart, i restarted and tried to restore again but it still did not work.

I have uninstalled quick-time already but the problem is still there, also my antivirus picked up root-kit in hamachi so i uninstalled that and did a full system scan from boot with avast, i haven't tried restoring again in case i lose any progress or the virus is restored.

So basically i have two problems: Programs missing from my programs and features list, and System restore not working 0xc0000022

I know i should do something with the CBS log to check but ill leave that for you guys to decide, thanks for the help.

Answer:programs missing from programs and features, recovery failed 0xc000002

Download and run Revo Uninstaller for the missing programs.

As far as your rootkit, simply removing the program doesn't remove the malware. Run a scan with Malwarebytes anti-Rootkit, then run Malwarebytes standard and then run Eusing to clean up the entry points of your virus.

Also, go into your AppData directory and clean out all the Temp files in there. Delete them for all user accounts on the machine:

C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Local\Temp for example.

I have run into a strange problem. I have searched and found other people with the same issue but no solution. Almost all of the programs in the programs and features list in the control panel are gone. the programs are still there in the start menu and can be opened. But I can not open pdf files on my desktop anymore, I would uninstall adobe and reinstall it but it isn't in the list to remove it. Thanks for the help.

A family member was tricked in to downloading and installing some stuff from the Internet on to a laptop that has Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit with Media Center. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff that was installed or if these problems existed earlier.

In Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, not all installed programs are listed. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letters Mi.. or Mo.. Only 14 programs are listed. In Start menu, All Programs, I think some programs are missing. The list seems unusually short. The laptop has a Win 7 style Start menu because IObit's Start Menu 8 program is installed. In Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, there were no shortcuts to the tools. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date but that didn't bring back the missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues.

I guess the missing programs could be the result of malware. I don't remember exactly what I removed. I only used the free version of MBAM to clean up. I tried restoring everything MBAM quarantined but that didn't help. I requarantined the stuff. It was mostly, if not all, PUPs.

Any ideas for bringing back the programs that should be in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu?

Answer:Missing some Programs in Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) Menu

I gave up. I restored the operating system and reinstalled everything. No problems now so I guess the problems of missing programs and BitDefender not working was caused by the malware/PUPs- a buggy installer.

Just noticed when I was about to upgrade one of my applications by starting to uninstall the current version that it wasn't no longer in the list of installed programs and lots of other programs are gone too.

Did some Google searching for this problem and noticed I was far from the only one who experienced this issue but unfortunately I wasn't able to find any real solution.

My Windows version is 1511 build 10586.420. I already tried running sfc /scannow and it came out with no errors found.

Any ideas what happened and how to fix it?

Answer:Lots of programs are missing from the Programs & Features list

Programs or Apps? I ask because Apps from the App store don't show up in Programs and features. They are in Settings > System > Apps & Features. What is the name of this software?

EDIT: I'm noticing some items in that list I wouldn't have called Apps? Some of my Steam Games, NVidia drivers for audio and video? My guess is eventually they will all show up in Apps & features.

Hi guys, hope you can help me with this please because I don?t really know what to do to solve it.

I have a Vaio running Windows 8.1. but coming with Windows 8 preinstalled. I have recently noticed that most of the programs and apps (Adobe, Realtek, Sony folder, Intel, Avast, Java, Bluetooth?) on Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) have vanished without knowing how. Only Microsoft apps are displayed there for some reason.

First, I run sfc /scannow and found some corrupted files that could not be fixed, so I decided to perform a full recovery (through Vaio Care that makes use of the Recovery partition) that restores the system to factory settings. After recovery, all programs and apps were in Programs and Features as expected. However, after removing either the preinstalled version of MS Office 2013 or the preinstalled games, most programs and apps disappeared again. I run again sfc /scannow, Avast and Malwarebytes and they found no issues at all. I also tried System Restore, but it did not fix anything. Only MS Office 2013, Avast and Malwarebytes are currently installed on the drive, along with Windows automatic updates (including Windows 8.1), and I have not used any ?cleaner? or ?optimizer? tools.

I found a potential cause for this. Apparently, the uninstaller for a program can incorrectly remove registry entries that are used by Windows and the Add/Remove Programs tool (Add/Remove Programs tool displays installed programs incorrectly), but I am not sure whether... Read more

Hi. For a couple of days now my computer was freezing randomly or giving me a "General Host Process for Win32 Services" error which shutdown the "DCOM server Process Launcher" and forced me to restart my PC. I resolved this problem by changing the DCOM Launcher to restart the program itself when it fails instead of restarting the entire system, saving me some sanity. I don't know if it is completely resolved but after looking into the error, svchost.exe was the programs involved with the error. However (here's the real problem), after doing this and running a full Norton Scan and a full SuperAntiSpyware scan (coming up with no hits on either), I suddenly have this little red X in the system tray icon that keeps popping up with "Warning! Security report - Your computer is infected! It is recommended to start spyware cleaner tool." This looks like a rogue spyware program to me and I don't know how to get rid of it and I don't want to click on it since it will probably open a Windows Explorer window to an infected site when I use Firefox as my default browser and never even mess with IExplorer. I ran a HijackThis scan and here is my logfile text which should help hopefully. Thanks.

Hello you really nice people. Since you have helped me on several occasions, I thought I'd try one more time.

I don't know exactly when it happened; however, at some point after I installed winXP as a dual boot and have been trying out some dvd burning software, I cannot add/remove programs in win2000... it states that "no programs are currently installed on this computer."

I have tried spybot (which found a few things and have been repaired)... I have tried Norton PC Doctor (which found a few things, all of which could not necessarily be repaired) and as a last resort I downloaded a freeware program Add/Remove Programs to get my program uninstalled.

In the midst of all this, I foolishly installed service pack 4 and then had to promptly uninstall it (I think it was a conflict with my video capture card -- got the blue screen of death at reboot [even in safe mode!!]). I was able to uninstall that because I had the good sense to back up and let it give me the uninstall option.

Any other ideas ??? I am going blind trying to follow the msn knowledge base suggestions checking the registry...

I don't know what information you need from me to try and help me out, so if you need any logs or stuff that I see other people post, please let me know how to capture that information for you as well... I'm pretty computer smart, just not really troubleshooting experienced... in other words, I just build em and learn as I go along.

Hi,
I wonder if someone can help me. I posted on the microsoft support pages but nobody could help me and directed me here.

A few weeks back i accidentally downloaded a program that wasn't from a reliable source, which in turn downloaded a bunch of junk on my computer. It was stupid of me, i'm usually really careful!
I managed to get in and remove most of them, but then all of a sudden all but a few of my programs completely disappeared from Programs and features. Flash Player, Google Chrome, Firefox and a few other programs were the only ones hat remained. The major programs that were missing from the list are still working fine from what i can see, but i didn't get the chance to remove a few items of adware and they are still active on my computer and being as irritating as an STI (i'd imagine...)
On searching online how to remove these parasites, most of the sites suggest uninstalling from Programs and Features, which i can't do because they aren't on the list! All other suggestions have not worked!
I have tried going into safe mode (with and without networking) and setting up another user profile with admin but the list stays the same.
I can't remember the last time i backed up (Months ago i presume)
This morning i did a scan on cmd (sfc /scan ??) and came back saying "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"
I have tried various tools to try moving the adware: YAC, Cloud System Booster, (i've uninstalled some others i've used so can't remembe... Read more

So I'm trying to uninstall some stuff, and Programs and Features from Control Panel is mostly blank. It seems to think that on my 500gb hard drive, which only has 50gb free space, that I only have 22 programs, occupying a space of half a gb. Edit: I should probably read the sticky BEFORE posting.

- Version of the OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x86
- If the OS produces an error: no error
- Were there recent crashes that could have caused this problem?: no
- Did you install new software recently? If this is the case: Which software? (Brand, version, build): Yes, lots....don't remember it all and can't check for obvious reasons.
- Did you do any of the following:
- Run a scan with an updated anti-virus program?
- Run a scan with an updated anti-Trojan program?
- Run a scan with an updated root kit detection program? (This only for Windows NT, W2K and newer!)
- Run anti-spyware scans with at least two freshly updated anti-spyware programs? (If so, which ones?): I have nod32 (legit)...'nuff said.

Just noticed that most of the programs have vanished in programs and features (control panel). I have around 90 installed programs. The ones that have vanished still work from the quick launch bar but they have also disappeared from the start menu. Have tried a system restore to the only restore point that was available but it didn't change anything.
The programs that are there are in alphabetical order from Mi to Mo
I updated filezilla yesterday and that reappeared in the programs and features list.

Answer:Most programs vanished from programs and features in contr

Hi Trevor,

Recently I noticed the same problem on a Windows 8.1 Samsung laptop when I was trying to remove some junk programs that came from the Internet. The only programs listed in the laptop's Programs and Features menu have names that start with Mi or Mo. Plus, some programs are missing from the Start -> All Programs menu. Microsoft's System Restore didn't help me. Check if Administrative Tools is empty on your computer, too. It was empty on the laptop I am working on. I fixed that by opening a command prompt as Administrator and using the command SFC /SCANNOW. That didn't bring back the missing programs in Programs and Features but that fixed the missing shortcuts in Administrative Tools and may have fixed a couple other issues I didn't know about.

Hello, I repair computers and lately I saw a few computers, all running on Windows 7, with missing programs in "Programs and Features" :The programs that are missing in "Programs and Features" could be viewed in the Uninstall function of CCleaner :To clean the computers, and get rid of all the crapware installed, I used Combofix, AdwCleaner and did a full scan with Kaspersky. When I saw that the missing programs didn't reappear, I did a "sfc /scannow", used Tweaking Windows Repair and did, in last resort, a Windows repair using a Windows 7 DVD and choosing "Upgrade" :The programs didn't reappear even after all of this.I know that programs can disappear in "Programs and Features" if the DisplayName value, in the registry, is more then 64 characters long :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UninstallThe thing is that the entries of the installed programs missing in "Programs and Features" are not in the above paths. How can CCleaner see those programs ?Do you have any ideas ?Thanks,m0t

Hi,

Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.

Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.

I've been on Windows 8 for a couple of months now and have installed a fair amount of programs which previously, as you'd expect, appeared on the Programs and Features list. However, as of yesterday, there are only about 10 programs in the list and I can find specific examples which I can run from the start menu or desktop that do not appear there.

This happened around a similar time to accidentally installing an application called 'TornTV', which a quick google revealed comes with all kinds of adware/spyware. I have since removed this program and run a full virus scan (Norton 360) which found nothing. I am wondering whether it could be related to this but whatever the cause, is there any way I can get the programs back in the list without having to reinstall them all?

I have a XP home OS, SP3 Compaq desktop. CA 2009 suite is the AV and Firewall, and run Adaware 09, Pareto xspy as well as the spyware within CA.
My machine does a couple of strange things, one is that on boot up into WinXP, the firewall reports Cthelper is trying to inject code with a thread that equals 0. Once up and running Internet Explorer 8 locks up frequently and as does Opera and has to be closed by taskmaster.
My desktop will blank out and reset the icons frequently.
A new Samsung DVD/CD rewrite optic drive was installed a few months back and inserting a CD or CD rom won't auto run, and the contents won't show up on explorer. Though I can run a Music CD through it no problem using Itunes for example. And the drive has no problems running in safe mode.

Also my sound card (Creative Audigy 2) also seems to be functioning strangely, for instance the Welcome sound on boot up, goes in and out. And a program I use for playing guitar, Guitarport will "clip" and shut off (in and out)the volume except at very low volumes. (It did niether of this before)

With these problems, I chose to do a repair on XP as the machine refused to restore an earlier time.
Before the repair I did a spyware scan and shut off the restore, which erased all previous restores.
During the repair, XP reached a point to install some media processes and suddenly couldn't find the optic drive and kept asking to insert WinXp disk (it was already in) after ten attempts at reading ... Read more

Computer: Dell Dimension 4600 OS= Windows XP SP3I recently downloaded a corrupt file from a website claiming it was a trial version of 'Microsoft Office 2007', then my Opera and Firefox web browsers began to redirect my searches, about 40% of all my searches. I have used the following programs, but to no avail: ALL WERE UPDATED AND THEN RUN-HijackThis-Autoruns-SUPER Anti Spyware-CCleaner-Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware- Ad-Aware-Webroot Anti-Virus w/ AntiSpywareThey were all updated before running, but I could not boot it in Safe Mode because a blue screen appears and says windows had to shut down. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you have any further questions FEEL FREE to ask, I am almost losing my mind Thank You!

I'm migrating to a new PC today (this is posted from the new one), and I'm determined to keep it more organized than my last one. I use a lot of opensource software, much of which doesn't have an installer, it's just copied to wherever you want it and shortcuts made manually. This is a problem when I'm trying to remember what's there.

Is there a way to create a record in "Programs and Features" for this software? I can create an uninstall command script for each one if it requires an uninstaller to be listed here, or whatever needs to be done. I just don't know how this part of Windows 7 works.

EDIT: I just found this. I'm still reading, but it looks like what I need.

Answer:Make Record in "Programs and Features" for Programs With No Installer?

Hi 4evrplan, welcome to the Seven Forums.

As far as I know it is not possible to manually add portable applications to Programs and Features list.

I have solved this simply by creating a folder called Portable Apps on C:\Program Files, adding all portable apps here in their own subfolders. A folder listing of this folder = a list of my portable apps, backing up all portable apps for instance before reinstalling Windows I simply just need to copy this one folder with its subfolders.

Hello, I was sent here from the Am I Infected Forum by garmanma. Topic referenced is here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/260361/requesting-virus-help-malware-greenav-and-rootkit-etc/ ~ OBPrior to posting in that forum. I tried to run MBAM, Spybot, Spyunter. The programs would not run at all, I would get an error stating I didn't have appropriate permissions. I downloaded the DDS.scr file and tried to execute a scan. The scan screen popped open for about one second and closed....every program that I try to run will either not run at all, or if it does run, it will close a few seconds into the scan then shut down. If I try to run it again, I'll get an error saying I don't have permission to run that file.I have tried online scans from Bitdefender, Microsoft's OneCare, and one more (forgot the name)...but every online scan shuts down the entire browser. Also, on occasion I get a fake page saying that the webpage I requested has been blocked due to my infections, and links to me to a page regarding GreenAV. I could not run most of the tools in the preparation guide, even after renaming them. However, in the other forum I was able to run a couple of scans before the programs shut down. Answer:HELP my programs + anti-spyware programs are shutting off

Welcome to TSG shizzawn2008,

Gotta be careful using HijackThis for anything unless it is in conjunction with guided assistance like this forum offers. It provides details and accesses not normally seen, such as you trying to guess legit things are suspect (the "Gopher" reference is just a type of IE setting for a specific type of access). There is no infection showing here, and maybe just issues with the wrong security setup overall. See here for steps to disable SpyBot's TeaTimer, as it may be something interfering with other softwares there. But a good idea if you have Vista questions is to post on them in the TSG Vista forum itself.

Question: Listed programs

Programs listed in Programs are different than programs listed on the Install/change window.
1. What are the differences in these two program listings?
2. What determines where a program is listed?
Thanks

Answer:Listed programs

Hello Moose,

The Programs and Features (Control Panel) window will only include installed programs that have a uninstall option. Most do these days though.

I'm not sure what location you mean with "Programs". If you mean the C:\Programs Files folder, then the programs that come with Windows 7 will not be listed in Programs and Features.

Please post back with more details on that location so we can take a look to see for you.

Adobe AIR is not a program per se, so it's not listed in programs list.See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Integrated_RuntimeIf you're not a developer, you can safely uninstall it.

I have backed up a friends data and used the dreaded red floppy to restore to factory settings. The Packard Bell software appeared to do this successfully and I then set about trying to remove various programs from add/remove. Virtually nothing was listed! For example Adobe Reader 5 is installed and working on the computer but doesn`t appear nor is it listed in All Programs. As basically all the preinstalled software. (Power DVD is listed in All Programmes but again not in Add/Remove)I`ve googled but can`t seem to find a clue - it sounds like a registry problem. Anyone experienced this before?

Answer:Add/Remove Programs Not Listed

The Add & Remove data is located in the registry & as you have reverted back to factory setting the registry no longer contains information regarding the programs that were installed after factory default. You could try re-installing the programs you want to remove & hopefully you should then be able to remove them.

I use Windows XP SP 3 on my 5 yr old HP laptop. There are 2 programs I no longer need. Casino Master and Masquee Casino Game Pack. Neither has built-in uninstall feature. They are not shown when I check Control panel/Add-Remove Programs.
Free version of Revo uninstaller doesn't show it either!
Windows Explorer/program files does not show them!
When I click Start/All programs/ Either software, it opens.

I believe they don't take much hard drive space. But, it is annoying that I cannot get rid of them.
What should I do without messing my computer?

Thanks for suggestions.

My Windows 10 START button shows an alphabetical listing of programs on my PC, but some are missing - how come? Is there a way for Win 10 to display ALL of my executable files (including any that I've downloaded and installed) ?

For example, my vlc.exe program (from VIDEOLAN) is not under the "V" listing as I'd expected.

Answer:Win 10: not all programs are alphabetically listed

Mine have newly installed progs (must call them "apps" nowadays!) at the top, then "most used"... for goodness sake just list in alphabetical order, then we know where we are - or where they are

Microsoft are garbling things and hiding things and generally taking us backwards, grrrr.

I expect someone knows how to sort out the programs list, tho - I'm thinking of installing Start10 (or there's a similar one that's free), but not until I get this darn laptop completely set up for my needs.

I used the Add/Remove Programs to uninstall several programs and they were and are, no longer showing in the Control Panel listing. I obviously thought they had been successfully removed. Whilst trying to find something else on my PC, using Start, right-click Explore etc, I found these same programs still listed. Can I just delete them again from this list and will they be gone for good then? And do you know why they are still listed at all if theoretically they are already uninstalled?

Hoping some one can assist... Just got my new Vista Ultimate x64 computer. I'm new to Vista and learned that the system sets up 2 program files: one for 64x bit and 1 for 32 bit programs. My issue is HP has loaded a whole slew of crapware and I want to clean it out... I can see it in the x86 files (as well as numerous shortcuts on my desktop) but I cannot find the programs in the add/remove program utility. I had CCleaner as well and they are not listed in there either.

Additionally, when I navigate to the programs I do not see any options to uninstall. Is there a way to get these programs sitting in the x86 folder to show up in my uninstall list?

Some examples of what I'd like to remove are:
Easy Bits for Kids
JunoPreloader
MSN toolbar
Netzero preloader
Online Services
Ebay

If I just delete these folders from the x86 folder they dont uninstall, correct?

any direction or assistance is greatly appreciated.. Thanks!

Answer:Uninstalling x86 programs: not listed

think I solved my issue.. I dont think the items in question are really installed.. they are trials so they just link in to the shortcuts. I deleted the shortcuts and removed the folders in the program list.. we'll see..

Hi. I had a problem recently where my C drive said it was full. I have an Acer so my hard drive is split in two. I transfered all my files (e.g. Word docs, images, videos) to the D drive and left programs and any other files like that on my C drive. Now my C drive for some reason says it is full again. I dunno how it could be, I removed a load of files and programs and moved all documents over and haven't installed or saved anything else to there. But anyway, I decided that I would remove another program or two that I didn't need. I went to programs and features (I'm using Vista) clicked uninstall and it began uninstalling. Suddenly I got a message telling me there was an error and it couldn't install the program. It's done this on more than one program (one from a disk, one I downloaded)so it's not just that I don't have the disk for it so it can't uninstall (as some programs do require that).

As I say it does start to uninstall, but then it seems to change its mind and tries installing. How can I get it to uninstall them as it should? I've never had any problems before and I can't think what could be causing it.

Thanks.

Hi everybody,
I know Microsoft likes to move things around with a new OS release.
They did it in Vista with Add and Remove Programs, changing it to Programs and Features and carried it over
to Win. 7. I found a Registry hack that changed it in Vista. I tried it on WIN 7. and it gave me an error,

"Not all data written, some registry keys still open"
It's on this page under "Control Panel" http://www.techoddity.com/tweak
This is it when I used edit.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7b81be6a-ce2b-4676-a29e-eb907a5126c5}]
@="Add/Remove Programs"
"LocalizedString"=-

Does anyone know if there is one for 7 or how to edit the registry it to change it to Add and Remove
Maybe one of you with Vista can use it. It worked fine when I had Vista.

This is just one of my pet peeves with Windows.

I wouldn't mess with the registry for something as silly as this. Seriously. It's not worth it.Eventually we all have to adjust to change.Just think "P" for "Programs"...

It is my belief that we are approaching a crisis point in Windows malware infestations. Recently I helped someone who found all the standard document types encrypted with two-factor encryption, along with a demand for payment to decrypt them (CryptoLocker malware). The only help I could offer was how not to have that happen again by setting a Group Policy to deny executables in %appdata%. This is done in software restriction policies of the local security policy.

Now %appdata% typically is c:\users\username\appdata\roaming and can be written to by anything or anybody - it's for data after all - but nothing stops programs silently installing and executing from there as well. Hence the need for a software restriction policy - details http://windowssecrets.com/newsletter/cryptolocker-a-particularly-pernicious-virus/

It is also wise to use UAC on level 1 to 3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Account_Control so every non-system application puts up a warning and you have to click to allow it to happen. That prevents most software installed in any place from running without you knowing. The problem is, UAC is a very blunt tool, and I would like to have certain programs I often use (for example backups) operate as white-listed programs so I don't have the irritation of the screen dimming and having to approve every time I use them.

How do I do that ? UAC and local security policy seem to be two independant things.

Answer:Can I overrule UAC with white-listed programs?

I don't think you can, that's the point. Otherwise apps would add themselves to the whitelist.

At the end of the day, the person installing the malware is the users.

When I click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen, a menu opens. At the bottom of that menu is a line that says "all programs". It opens into a menu of programs on my machine.

Inside of "all programs" is listed a folder called Microsoft. Inside of it is Outlook 2010.

However, I recently wanted to send an email using Outlook 2010 by clicking on a link on a website. A window opened that would allow me to select the email client I wanted to use from a list of programs. But I can't find Outlook 2010.

When I click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen & then on "computer" and then on C drive, there is listed in C drive two folders, Programs & Programs (x86). However, the Microsoft folder containing Outlook 2010 is not in either one of them.

When I did a search for Outlook 2010 on my C drive, the result said it can be found at
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office

However, I cick the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen & then on "computer" and then on C drive, I cannot find a ProgramData directory. So, where is my Ourlook 2010?

Haven't found that covers the exact problem.

Click on Start. Now click on All Apps. Scroll down and find Chrome in the list. Right click, and select Uninstall. That should do it.
If it is not listed here, it is possible you are running Chrome Portable, in which case you only need to delete the file directory where it is installed.

I downloaded and ran HighjackThis once and noticed that it is now listed in my Add/Remove Programs List. Why is this? I thought it didn't actually install anything on your computer?

(I originally had it in a folder on my desktop, I think that's where it was when I ran it, then I moved it to the Programs Folder on C:, then I moved it back to my desktop. Not that any of that would matter...)

On a side note, I also ran that Startup program, and that didn't add anything to my Add/Remove Programs List...

Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Answer:Why Is Hijackthis Listed In My Add/remove Programs?

Hello,

Not sure what your problem is though..
Hijackthis is listed in your add/remove programs because when you start Hijackthis the first time, it looks where Hijackthis is located and puts an entry in the Uninstall entry in your Registry.

Hijackthis does indeed add some registry entries when you run it, so using add/remove deletes the entries from the registry.

The startup program doesn't add anything to the registry as far as I know.

Also make sure you are logged in as administrator. If you use (preferred) normal user for daily use and many of the programs were installed as administrator or before you started using a limited user account, they may not show up unless you are logged in as administrator. Also when you look for restore options, not that you should have a 'button' to "Show More Restore Points". If you do, then you will be able to see all of your restore points.By default your system should reserve 12% of your disk space for your restore points. Less than 8% (unless you have a very large disk) is not generally recommended. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

By this I mean I have programs that I know are part of some of my other programs but seem to be stuff like 'System requirement lab' and 'HP customer feedback' which where never previously in my Programs and Features and I don't realy think the programs in there qualify to be in the list, they seem to be more of secondary programs, such as parts of programs rather then the actualy program. I can also not uninstall any of the programs but as I am installing new ones they seem to be placed into the new list and are available to uninstall. I do not know how this happened and at the moment im unable to remove any of the programs or uninstall them from the Programs and Features list, while also unable to uninstall any of my other programs that I had via to when this happened. Finally, all of the programs have limited icons and the ones that do not have the 'missing icon' icon. Please help if you can anyone, its will be much appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Programs and Features problem

Hello Matthew3,
These are things that you will have installed at some time, probably via a web site.

'System requirement lab' is a feature of "Can You Run It", a site that will tell you if your PC system is up to running games.

The same with 'HP customer feedback', this would have appeared after a visit with HP.
If they bother you they are safe to remove, but will not do any harm either.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Answer:Programs and Features Windows 7

Not that I am currently aware of. click programs and features, then click uninstall programs or features, and wait about 3 minutes (i know it may seem like a really long time, perhaps you could feed the dog, make lunch; in other words let it sit for a little bit). If it still wont pop up, then type cmd in the start menu and RIGHT click it, select run as administrator. type sfc /scannow and let it scan for as long as it needs (usually less than 5 minutes).

You can also optimize windows a bit (no need to buy anything, but it does have a lot of different suggestions): Optimize Windows 7

I'm running Win 7 64bit. I'm having my machine looked at this weekend (getting a lot of system errors). In the meantime I need to do some tuning that requires a little tweaking in "programs & features section. My problem is that when I go there (control panel> programs & features) the box pops up but then nothing happens. The box is empty and no matter how long I wait it won't populate. I have no idea if this is tied to the system errors I've been getting. Any ideas?
As always comments & flames welcome.
Tnx,
Dusty

I would suggest wating, any changes you make may be undone by the company/person working on the system this weekend...such as; resetting system defaults and the like.

I just install the nero 9 trail and now when i go to uninstall it, programs and features pops up for a second and then crashes. Unfortenuatly, i did not have system restore turned on. Right clicking it and clicking it dosent work either. I can see the window pop up for a second but they it crashes. Anyone know of a fix, i searched the forums and google my heard out to no avail.

Edit : After running the nero 9 uninstall manually, it still wont open. also, running the command appwiz.cpl in the run prompt, it still will not work

Edit 2: Opens in safe mode.... a service maybe...

Edit 3:Windows Update dispays "The Page Failed to Load and Windows Media Player no longer automaticly play video files when i double click on them, on when i go File>open... in a command prompt scf /SCANNOW says that there is no integrety problems.

Answer:Programs And Features Will Not Open

Hello Blazer64,

Since you do not have System Restore as a option, you might do a Repair (Upgrade) install to see if it can fix the problem for you.

Hope this helps,

Good morning all. I attempted to install Itunes 11.4 and received an error message that "the old version of Itunes cannot be uninstalled. Contact your local administrator". Then, I figured that this shouldn't be a problem because I can remove Itunes from Windows 7's Control Panel, Programs and Features, right? Apparently no. Itunes does not appear on Programs and Features. When I go to Start, All Programs and the Itunes program folder, there is no Itunes uninstall icon either.

When I tried uninstalling it from "Wise Program Uninstaller", Itunes does not appear on there as well.

I have also tried Microsoft "Fix It". Itunes does not appear on there as well.

Itunes is fully functional when I run it from my desktop and I can run Itunes from C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe. Since I am able to run Itunes from my desktop and from Windows Explorer, what alternative way can I use to successfully uninstall it from Windows 7 so that I can install the new version of Itunes 11.4?

I have tried Apple Forums, Itunes Forums to no avail.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Answer:Itunes does not appear on Programs and Features

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

See if Revo Uninstaller can find the left over files:

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

Next, make sure you run the new iTunes as an administrator.

Hey there,

I recently installed Steam and when I went into the programs and Features menu, I found that the default icon was corresponding to the details. I have tried repairing it but nothing happens.

Are there anyway you can manually add the icon on the Programs/Features menu?

Thanks

It says it has been disabled by the administrator. I am logged onto an account with admin privileges. How can I enable these features and others that seem to be disabled. I have Home Premium 32bit. The computer is running sluggishly and I am trying to remove programs that may be viruses or that are just taking up space. Any help would be great, thx in advance.

Placing the string below on a command line will ope Programs and features on most Windows machines.

%windir%\system32\control.exe /name Microsoft.ProgramsAndFeatures

Can this be made into a link (Using SharePoint) that will open from a web page (this is internal)?

Hey everybody I was just checking up on things in my laptop and found everything fine and dandy until I got to the Programs and Features Menu. It only shows the following Programs...
Apple Mobile Device Support
ATI Catalyst Install Manager
Bonjour
Brodcom Gigabit Netlink Controller
Conexant HD Audio
Facebook Plug-In
HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Manager w...
HyperCam 2 (64-Bit)
iTunes
Lexmark 4800 Series and a few others. I`d really like to know if this is happening to anyone else and as far as I know it has something to do with the registry.

Answer:Programs and Features Error

I had a similar problem after installing HyperCam2. I set back to an earlier image and the problem was fixed. But if you have no images, you may try a restore point from before HyperCam was installed.

Hello once again...

My topic at techsupportforum.com is now in the process of being closed. The issue did not get resolved, as it is a very tough one to solve. I am now looking for help here.
Here's my problem:

From the Programs and Features, all my programs are listed, but only 7 or so programs can be removed. These are the most recently installed programs, other than Unreal Tournament 3, which was installed in 2008. I'm running Vista Home Premium, and if System Restore comes to mind, forget about it.. I turned it off at one point (stupid move...), so the recovery points are gone.

I think what happened is that I had malware which removed Uninstall entries from the registry.. I don't quite know how to get the entries back, or if it's even possible. I do know, however, that anything I install gets an entry, so that works fine. I have software called Revo Uninstaller, which doesn't track all my software, but it sees 75 applications that can all be removed successfully. I was told that was most likely because it looks at Program Files instead of Uninstall in the registry.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and I hope to fix this ASAP.. Thanks a lot.
Justin

I've used Revo with no problems. Are you trying to remove progs? If so I'd give Revo a chance to work.

Can anyone tell me what DBPix20 is? I'm thinking it was installed with the original MS system...
Thanks

Hello idahjo,

From what I can gather, DBPix 2.0 is an Active X program that integrates with Microsoft Access. Does it look familiar?

In the list of installed programs, I see "CVE-2010-3971" shown twice, with no publisher listed for it.

When I do a search for that term I find that it refers to a vulnerablility that was patched in January 2011. I've not previously seen an entry that looked like this, with no other identifying information.

I can't even find any info on the Microsoft patch that was released for this vulnerabilty, apparently it was superceded by another update, but no info about that is given. MS11-003: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer

Does anyone have any information about what this might be?

Thanks

Answer:Odd entry in Programs and Features

I do not think this entry is harmful. Do not worry about it. Looks safe to me.

How would I delete my work norton antivirus software when it is not listed in the add or remove programs? Just deleting individual files does not work because norton prevents key files from being deleted. Symantec support just listed the standard way of deleting programs,
