No IE, Can't Install Files, No Safe Mode

Question: No IE, Can't Install Files, No Safe Mode

Evening everyone,

I have been trying to get assistance for this issue which can be found here:

Unfortunately the biggest problem that is causing me to be unable to fix the issue is that I can't install any files. I haven't seen anything worth noting in the Windows error logs. Per Naren after running ListParts, he suggested that the problem was found and to post a support request here. Attached is the listparts log. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys,

Had success posting here before so I am going to try it again. My friend gave me her laptop and stated her son had been on it and now they believe they have a virus (didn't provide me with additional details). This laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium. I open it up tonight and here is what I noticed:

1) McAfee is continually stating that the computer is at risk.
2) Internet Explorer does not run at all. iexplore.exe is where it belongs but nothing happens when attempting to run.
3) Installer is not installing files. I attempted to install Mozilla Firefox. From the thumb drive UAC did come up but that was it. Copying the file to the desktop and attempting to install did nothing. Checking through error logs, I did see a notice that the installer service is not running correctly and that it could be installed incorrectly (ironic eh?)
4) Safe mode did not work. After attempting to run safe mode (w/ networking), it loaded 3 files finishing with hal.dll. It then proceeded to the repair installer, stating to reboot and if it worked successfully Windows will run normally.

Unfortunately I don't have many details to give you on this one. There aren't any applications or error messages that scream "This is what I am!". If ya guys could lead me in the right direction I would appreciate it!

Hey guys,

Was tasked to fix another laptop. Oddly enough this issue is similar to the one I fixed a few weeks ago, found here:

This is for a Windows XP Media Center edition laptop. I attempted to run Last Known Good Configuration, however that didn't resolve anything. Reading the preparation guide, I attempted to download and run, however it would not run on the laptop. When attempting to run that, as well as any of the internet programs on the laptop, I see the hour glass real quickly and then that's it. I didn't notice anything in the error logs regarding the applications attempting to run.

I attempted to run both Safe Mode and Safe Mode w/ command prompt. Safe mode will load, however it only gets me to the black splash screen saying it's in safe mode and the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+delete won't work for me to load explorer.

Please let me know where to start so that we can resolve this issue. I have a feeling where to start but I know as well as any it's very annoying when people want to jump 5 steps ahead.

Answer:Can't open any browsers, install files, no safe mode

I just did a clean re-install of Vista x64 on a new hard drive (old drive crashed). Here's the problem:

Using my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista).

Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it transfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky).

Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:

Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out.

This really the second clean install I've done in 24 hrs. After the first one, I upgraded and added a lot of software and add-ons before I figured out the connection problem; so I decided the easiest fix would be to re-format and start over, checking each step to see what caused the slow-down. Unfortunately once I did the second clean install I tested right away and I had the connection problem from the get-go. Since then... Read more

Answer:Vista x64 new install: Slow internet connection in normal mode; fast in safe mode

run msconfig and uncheck startups that you are POSITIVE are safe to do so. See if your speed picks up. Then allow one startup at a time.

This is copy+pasted from another forum.
I can't get any help from that one so I'm trying here..

It started by having a bunch of command prompts pop up trying to do who knows what. Then a bunch of different windows came up including ones that just had question marks all over and just all kinds of different stuff.
I couldn't close it all. Loads of stuff was running.

I knew I was screwed then but the computer was going too slow to put my USB in and back anything up.

Couldn't open a lot of things like the task manager and whatnot. Surprisingly could run msconfig.

Restarted in safe mode.. okay. looking good.
when it loads up, there's nothing on the desktop but the recycle bin.

inside the recycle bin I can see plenty of files I personally deleted.

Not much appears in the start menu.
In my computer, there's plenty of folders.. but no files appear inside of any of them.

I know the files are still in them because it tells me how much memory is in them.

Absolutely nothing will show up.

I've been crying so much. This is a music studio computer that has absolutely tons of work on it and I'll be devastated if I lose it. I have plenty of it backed up but a lot of recent stuff isn't backed up entirely.

Does anyone know if there's a way I can fix this or at least get my files off of it?

so, I put a USB drive that had Yahoo's Anti-spy loaded on to it. I know the program works by just dragging the folder so I ran it. Here's a list of what it found:

Answer:Can't see any files in safe mode.

edit 5: (no edit button? seriously?)
Going into safe mode on the normal account rather than administrator gave me nothing but a blank locked up screen. Great.
I went back into the admin which still opened.. but still couldn't really do much.
Decided to see what would happen without safe mode enabled.
Loaded up. The background appeared but turned black shortly after. A program instantly started up and appeared on the desktop. Task manager worked so I closed a bunch of stuff.

Tried using the search to find some of my files. It won't find anything that's in the documents and settings folder.. Yet the folder itself is 80gb. I don't understand how everything can just be invisible from seeing it anywhere.

computer is pretty much ruined. guess it's going to have to be wiped.

I've had plenty of virus issues throughout the years but this has to be the most stressful one. definitely one of the worst days ever.

I guess it's over.

I recently downloaded SP3 but its stalls at the part that says "Running processes after install" so I restart and uninstall the renmants of SP3 with the uninstall thing that comes with SP3. I reasearch my problem. They say to start in safe mode and download the full package, place it in C: Drive and start in safe mode. I've put the file in C: drive but I can't start in SAFE mode probasbly because of my motherboard not a virus. Normally when I turn on my computer, I hear a beep and instead of a list some equipment that is installed in my machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed, I get an image that says Intel Desktop Boards. At that time I would try to press F8 alot of times but instead comes up, Choose a boot device. <--????. HELP!

(I always disconnect for the internet and disable my anti-virus and third party firewalls during the installation. I also enable Windows Firewall).

Answer:I need to go to safe mode to install SP3!

Right click on the C drive in Explorer and go Properties > Tools > Check Now (under Error Checking). Check both boxes then click "Start Now". A message will pop up saying that Error Checking will run after you restart the computer. Restart the computer and Error Checking will run automatically after the restart. After it?s finished it will restart into Windows automatically.

DH's computer has apparently been badly infected. When we log in to a regular windows account, it takes literally hours to come up and then the quick launch and sys tray never show up, and nothing seems to be working. It is windows XP home & I think it's fairly up to date. (supposed to automatically do that). It has Norton Internet Security, also supposed to keep itself up to date.

I can boot it up in safe mode, but when I start Norton, it says some features aren't available in safe mode, do I want to do a scan? I say yes, but nothing happens.

I can run Hijack This from a thumb drive, but it doesn't seem to find anything while in safe mode. So far I haven't managed to get the messed up system to recognize the thumb drive.

Is there something that doesn't need to be installed while in windows mode? Some program I can install from a thumb drive in safe mode or better yet, just run directly from the thumb drive?

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Av I Can Install/run In Safe Mode?

You should be able to run this one from a pen drive:Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page. Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:Double-click on launch.exe to start the program.Cancel any prompts to download the latest CureIt version and click Start. At the prompt to "Start scan now", click Ok. Allow the setup.exe/driver to load if asked by any of your security programs. The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders). If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be... Read more

My old toshiba notebook has crashed. Yes, I dropped it....more than once to be honest. (RIP). I can only boot into 'safe mode". I get a blue screen when booting in regular mode and get caught in a continual loop.

I just purchased a HP Pavilion 8055. I have a CAT5e Crossover Patch Cable. I want to transfer all my files to my new computer.

In the past, I have used the XP wizard feature to create a network.... I can't do this in "safe mode".

Is there another way to do this?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:x'fer files from safe mode to new computer?

Unfortunatley you may be stuck with bringing up a network. Im no PC expert, but I know you can get an adapter that will allow you to remove your old hard drive and use you USB port on your new laptop to make it a second drive. Then you can copy the files directly. I know some of the guys at work have the kit, its great, you can use it on any hard drive. I'll see if I can find it, its about $ 20.00

My computers keeps crashing when I try to boot up in normal Windows mode. It only works in Safe Mode. The problem is, in safe mode, the USB ports do not work, nor does the disc burner. I have pictures and music files I need to back up onto an external hard drive. However, the external hard drive connects through a USB port.

Any advice as to how I can backup my files on to the external hard drive in safe mode?

Answer:Need help backing up files in safe mode

Take the hard drive out of the computer and mount it in an external enclosure. Attach it to a working computer by USB cord and copy out what you need.

Need help please to recover files in safe mode. I am unable to boot to normal XP Pro SP2 OS. I cannot access internet with present computer. I have an onboard CD drive and have access to a USB external HP Drive. I tried copying MY Documents to this drive but it would not work. I inserted disc that came with HP drive, it would not start automatically. Went to Explore and opened folders. All the folders appear to be microsoft video files. Also attempted to load new Mcafee CD and aborted install due to Norton loaded originally. I have the new Dell Install CD and Driver CD, install CD is XP Pro SP2.

Please help need instructions to copy wanted documents, pictures, etc. and do an new install. Or detailed steps to take to get back into regular windows. I should add that i was reinstalling windows when all this started, thought all was lost on HD, Dell tech support had me remove it after running diagnostic. New HD would not install properly either. Put old HD in and ran the same check and HD passed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have Windows XP sp3 and it fails to complete boot process every time. It reaches the desk top and variably shows desktop icons, sometimes explorer bar and some system tray icons. Moving the pointer over any of the icons or explorer bar produces the hourglass. I can only really boot up in Safe Mode but do not have Administrator password which according to the orignal seller, never set one.

I want to wipe out the XP and start fresh with Windows 7, but have important files to save before I do. I have tried everything. Help!

Answer:How can I copy my files in safe mode?

Welcome to TSF!
I'm afraid the rules won't allow us to provide any help with bypassing lost passwords, as there is no way to determine the actual circumstances.

If there was no password, it shouldn't prompt for one, so sounds like there actually is one.

Is the Administrator account the only one that appears in Safe Mode?

You can boot with the Win 7 DVD and use the command prompt to copy files to an external drive:
Boot with the DVD
Select your language and click Next
Click Repair your Computer
After it scans for Windows installations, select the Top option, then click Next
Click Command Prompt.

You can use a Ubuntu Live CD to copy files to an external drive, to another PC over a network, or bun them to disk.

Whenever I boot my computer normally, it works fine until I try to run a program, or open a folder, or do anything, and then my computer freezes. It works fine in safe mode. I have run virus scans with Avast and Malwarebytes, and found nothing. A couple days ago, avast started telling me that it was automatically running some program (C:\Program Files\Fujitsu\Utils\FjOddUnl.exe) in sandbox for some reason, but it never came up with any concrete problem, so I'm not really sure how much that matters. This laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook T-series) is a couple of years old, but I just had it repaired (under warranty) a couple weeks ago, and they replaced the HDD and the motherboard, and I really wasn't expecting to have problems like this again so soon.

Ok... so my mom brings me her computer... almost like I have any clue what I'm doing. NOT. She would like a few files saved before I wipe it clean n start over. If I go into the regular startup... it slows to the point of nothingness, then norton comes on to say that a trojan was found, and can't seem to do anything without it locking up.

So... started it up in safe mode. Thought, silly me, that I could just save her files that way, then erase all the crap, reload everything n give it back to her. But no... CD drives dont work in safe mode... DUH. And since some of these files are pictures, floppy isn't gonna work. What is the easiest way to save some files before the whole dang thing freaks out on me?

Answer:WOuld like to save some files... in safe mode... ??

About 3 days ago I opened an mp3 file that someone had sent me in Windows Media Player. Apparently it was infected, but I didn't get any notice from AVG free. The screen flashed a few times so I suspected something was amiss. I right-clicked on the file where I had saved it and had it scanned by AVG; it said infected. So I told it to remove and I believe a message came up saying removal may cause problems with the system. I had it remove anyway, I guess my mistake.

Anyway, then the symptoms started. When I tried to run any executable I would get the message Windows cannot find <filename> make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. Now I don't even get that, nothing will start.

In Safe Mode most apps will start, but I can't connect to the internet. I think when it first happened I was able to connect via Safe Mode With Networking, but not anymore. I had to leave it for a few days to finish income tax on my laptop. In Safe Mode I get messages like Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall Service and The Security Center Service can't be started.

I downloaded Hijack This and burned it to a CD on the laptop. I can run it on the infected machine, but only in Safe Mode. I can also run the AVG command-line scanner in safe mode.

Any assistance you can provide in starting to find a resolution to this would be much appreciated.

Answer:Can't rune .exe files except in Safe Mode

Does this sound like a Sircam virus or variant therof?

Do I have any hope of correcting the situation or should I just salvage what data I can and start over, either from a month-old backup or via reinstall OS?

Thanks for info.

this has been occurring ever since my computer was diagnosed with a trojan. i removed it, and ever since then no .EXE files will open. I will click on any .EXE file, the revolving circle signifying loading will show for a second, and then it won't load at all - the program is not present in the task manager.

the weird thing is, there is no difference in safe mode. no .EXE file will run in any variation of safe mode. this prevents me from running ANYTHING apart from the command prompt, viewing folders, and notepad. i cannot load the internet, a virus scanner, NOTHING. it is difficult to fix something when one is literally unable to access anything.

i have attempted the 'repair my computer' option when i press f8, but it says it can't be repaired automatically. i downloaded a registry fix from a different computer, but it reads the message "Could not import exefix.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes".

I cannot load a registry fix, virus scanner, or the internet. i STILL cannot open .EXE files in any variation of safe mode. i do not have the windows 7 disc so i cannot reformat. additionally, the trojan appears to have erased all my system restore points, so i cannot restore to any previous time.

i have literally run out of ideas. i can't even install any fixes! any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Answer:.EXE Files Do Not Open - even in safe mode!

A long time ago, I had something similar happen to me. I found my computer infected with some variant of the WinA Lizard (or something like that) virus that infected every .exe file I ran while it was on my system. It hosed every executable on the HD b/c it actually infected my (in windows 95 - shows you *how* long ago). I got lucky b/c I loved making all of my .ZIP files self extracting executable files, and hosed every single one of the. I was able to still manually open the files using WinZIP, but I learned then not to make self-extracting executable files anymore.

At any rate, though, I found so many residual problems with that system I eventually formatted and reinstalled my OS. In this case, unless you can figure out how to restore your system to work correctly, this may end up being your only option.

i tried to download hijackthis but once again says installer does not work in safe mode

Answer:can only use computer in safe mode and cant install anything

Hi,It is correct that you will not be able to install any apps in safe mode. It is because the safe mode is the mode where only the minimal features are loaded up or activated. For any apps to install you need to activate the installer service. To do that I will give you the steps in the end. Method 1 to increase the performance:Step 1. In run window type "msconfig" and hit enter without quotes.2. go to services tab3. check the "hide all microsoft services"(Compulsory step to be done or else it is going to be more problem)4. uncheck all the services which you think is not necessary. Keep in mind that the antivirus services should be running.Method 2 to enable installer service1. In run window type "cmd" and hit enter without quotes.2.Safe Mode.Type this in a command prompt:REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"and thennet start msiserverThis will start the Windows Installer Service.3. try installing the apps now. Thanks and RegardsAswinNB: This is my first post, I apologize if you find any mistake in my explanation. Please let me know if you found this post useful.

This method is very handy if you have a piece of hardware that is causing issue with your installation of Windows 7. It will detail how to disable the offending piece of hardware during installation.

Here's How:

Step 1, With the Windows 7 DVD in your DVD drive, press any key when promped @ 'Press any key to boot from CD / DVD...', as soon as the message is gone, quickly press F8 to show the boot options list. Select Safe Mode and install 7. It will allow the initial stages & file copying.

Step 2, When 7 restarts for the first time, press F8 and select 'safe mode'. A dialog box will appear stating that windows cannot continue in safe mode 'ok' to restart.

Do not click OK when the message box appears. Instead, just carry on as usual

Step 3, press SHIFT+F10 to open the command prompt and direct youself to x:\windows\system32

cd system32
then type CompMgmtLauncher (it takes a few seconds to load) you can then access device manager from this console.

Step 4, Select the offending hardware & choose to disable it. Close command window and click ok on the dialog box. Windows will use a standard driver (with less funtionality) when it restarts.

Once installation has finished & you actually have a screen up & running you should be able to install your ori... Read more

A few of the anti virus programs have a BOOT disk with their AV on it. You will put this in your cd drive, and restart the computer. It will boot into the AV program and (hopefully) scan and begin to clean the computer. you have a compter in that state, it may be easier to reinstall your operating system.

Is it good, bad, or makes no difference to install java runtime environment in Safe Mode?

For installing version 7u11. Windows XP sp 3. 2.0GHz Celeron processor, 512 MB RAM. Machine been often running and responding slowly last several days. It gets stuck sometimes so installing big applications may push its resources too far all at once. This is why I wonder if Safe Mode works the system with less stress.

(I already have and run Norton Internet Security v.20, and Malwarebytes , both upgraded and regularly updated).

Normally, installing any software is required to be booted in normal setup. You may have other problems during the installation process regarding the downloaded software.

I've been working on my In-Law's Toshiba laptop with XP Home SP3. I just spent over a week working with a very helpful member in another part of the forum cleaning dozens upon dozens of viruses & rootkits off the computer. I was at the Microsoft site & tried to run their Live One Care and first it required me to take McAfee off the computer & then half way through the install of the Live One Care all the IE windows closed. I didn't get any sort of errors, it just closed. When I tried to open IE again, I got an error saying it could not access it & I may not have permissions (screen shot attached) I uninstalled the Live One Care but still got the same error. So I uninstalled IE7 & tried to reinstall it. It runs through set up then tells me it didn't install properly & I need to restart & then follow the trouble shooting link it put on the desktop. I restart, but when I click on the link, I get the same error again. I read that if you already have SP3, you have to uninstall it before you can reinstall IE, so I tried that, but still get the same error. I also cannot reboot in Safe Mode. I don't have the slightest clue as to what to do next! PLEASE HELP!!?!?!

I've read your other post. I suspect you still have a rootkitThere's a new variant out that is a killer Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log. When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.The HJT team is very busy and it will take awhile to get to your postPlease be patient and good luck

Is this just the stupidest thing in the world. I have visited the Microsoft site and Google'd this issue to death. I had the blue screen BSOD and I reinstalled windows xp. I had downloaded the "PC Defender" which tries to take your money and you can't even shut the damn thing off with the task manager. How outrageous....That these jerks can just stick out their hands and require payment is incredible.

I reinstalled windows and now I can get into safe mode with networking. That's what I"m in right now. Everytime I boot into windows normally I get to my desktop and all my icons are there and it almost finished booting into windows and then it's BSOD....

I was trying to use the Dr Watson and I have a dump file. I can't read it though. I have downloaded the symbols from the microsoft site and also windows debugger but guess what? I can't install the windows debugger in safe mode. WHy? The message is "WIndows installer not available" This can be the case if you're safe mode...blah blah blah....

You would think Microsoft would have a clear fix for this on their website.

What can I do to get my computer back? I'm sure if I could just get the debugger installed, I could analyze the dump file and find out what happened.

Any assistance is appreciated.

I have a new Thinkcentre 92P and have read the manual. However, I can't find out if one can boot into safe mode with all the Lenovo software. Indeed, there's no list of what to press to get to various tasks.  Some is here, some is there. It's enought to make me regret not buying a simple Dell. My new computer does not keep settings, the monitor goes off for no reason etc etc and they can't get a new systemboard for quite a while. I'm very disappointed.  If I can't even use safe mode, this is not a machine for someone like me. I use win 7 64 bit, i.e.9 and I have the right drivers. Knowledge base hasn't come up with help but perhaps someone kind can assit this frustrated senior citizen.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me please? I have some files on an external hard-drive that I've had problems accessing and have finally managed to figure out how to take ownership of the files by booting up my PC in safe mode (I have Windows XP Home), logging in as an administrator and then changing to administrator in the owner tab. I've now transferred all the files to the desktop on my PC but I now have the problem that I can only access them in safe mode and am unable to transfer them onto a CD or DVD rom and my memory stick won't register either. The files don't appear on my desktop when I boot up my PC the usual way, even though my setting in user accounts is admin. How do I go about transferring these files for use on my laptop (Windows 7 Professional) or on my PC in normal mode? Help!!!!

I'm using Windows 10 on my laptop. Few days ago, I found a process in task manager (I forgot the name) which seemed suspicious. So I searched the internet for it and found out that it is a cryptocurrency mining app so I looked for up how to remove it. I downloaded Malwarebytes first it cleared some stuff. Then I downloaded HitmanPro after which all the problem started, I guess. It scanned my pc for a while without showing any result. After a minute it showed some files that were scanned and all of them were Firefox Browser's cache. But at the exact same time Windows Defender started showing virus detected notification. I panicked and stopped the HitmanPro scan and restarted my pc to remove stuff from Malwarebytes scan and this scan. After this restart, everytime I start my laptop, it shows the error "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute". Tried a lot pf fixes from the internet but to no avail. The final option I think I have is to reset my pc. But here's the problem. My laptop is only starting in safe mode due to "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute" error. I can't select the option of 'Keep my files and reset pc' from settings cause it isn't working in safe mode. I started the System recovery by F11 option while starting the pc and there's a reset option too. Please tell me will I get to keep my files if I reset my pc from there?
Also the salesperson already created a Recovery drive on the hard disk itself. I also have the Recovery CD with me.

I have a problem with svchost.exe making my CPU 100, so I followed this guide to fix it. When I'm at the point of finding and opening the "fix_svchost.bat" file, I can't.

To try to resolve this problem, I went to here and downloaded the "Batch File Association Fix", but it didn't work and I noticed no difference.

Please help me solve this problem.

Answer:[SOLVED] I can't see batch files in safe mode?

Fixed it, sorry I'm not writing on the original post; I can't find the edit button. It turns out that my svchost.exe problem was actually not a problem after all. Multiple svchost.exe's running is normal. The reason for my CPU usage being so high is because of a process called MsMpEng.exe, not svchost.exe. Here is a picture.

Well, I've been scouring Google on our secondary computer all night, and I'm stumped. I'm also not completely tech savvy, so please forgive me.

My computer shut down by itself while I was typing an email. Rebooted and no exe files would open except IE 64 bit (as of six hours later, now that won't open either - opens, flashes, closes and says IE crashed). It has gone through numerous "windows won't start, repairing" screens. It has tried to system restore, but it doesn't fix the problem.

I cannot open in safe mode, and Task Manager is missing. I can open regedit but not msconfig (this is bothersome because I found a workaround for getting the system to reopen in safe mode by changing some configurations, but...) Can't open device manager as one option suggested looking for the possible virus culprit in the tools/drivers section.

I found a site that had an exe repair fix to either merge or import into the registry, but it keeps saying it can't do it because there are "processes running." Those boards suggested trying to the merge/import in safe mode, but as above..can't open in safe mode. Also since I have no task manager available, I can't manually end or suspend any processes.

Windows Defender runs but says everything is a-ok (clearly not).

Because I don't feel comfortable deleting anything from the registry, that's the only thing I haven't tried. Oh, I did find something that said to check the shell and one other place in the registry, bu... Read more

Answer:No exe files will open, nor msconfig or safe mode

Okay, I restarted and finally was able to get into msconfig. I set it up so the computer automatically starts in Safe Mode. Tried importing/merging that exe file again, and nope, says "other processes are running." Went into services through msconfig and shut down all services - still didn't work.

I also find a possible solution to create a new user - won't let me. Sigh....

I posted to the forums at Mcafee as well because originally I thought this was a virus.
Here is a copy of what I put up at Mcafee.

am not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but I couldnt find one more specific.
I will include as much info as I can.
I am not a computer whiz, but I am not toally ignorant either.

2 weeks ago my 1yr old shut off my PC via the surge protector. Then it would not turn back on. I called the Geek Squad and they said sounds like a power supply. I told a computer saavy friend what the Geeks said and he said you can do that yourself. He brought over an extra power supply he had and popped it in for me until the one I ordered from Tiger Direct came. Everything worked fine. Then I took his out and replaced it with the new one and the pc would not boot passed the windows log on screen. It would start up as normal and then get to the log on screen and completely shut down and cannot be restarted without resetting the power supply.

It will however, fully boot in Safe Mode.

I thought maybe a heat issue?? So I pulled the fan and put on the heat gel stuff and still will not boot past Windows log on screen and then completely shuts down.

I figure, I must have a virus. I had Norton on the PC. I figured it must suck so i went out and bought McAfee Total Protection. I installed Mcafee in safe Mode and it ran a virus check and found nothing. I am unable to access the Mcaffee product via the icon or programs list. It just does nothing when I click on it.... Trying to clean my soon-to-be father-in-law's laptop, and it is an absolute mess. He had worked with it for months w/o firewall/antivirus-program etc.... It has become unbearable for him (too slow, hardly any interent access, pop-ups, security warnings too many to mention...)

It's a Dell laptop with XP Professional 2002, Service Pack 1.

I tried to clean it in Safe Mode: there I ran CCleaner, Ad-Aware, and Avira, each a couple of times. Avira told me after scanning that some files were locked, and they would be deleted on reboot, but after restarting, it found the same files again.

I located those dll files myself and tried to delete them manually (still in Safe Mode), but they couldn't be deleted or moved...
Some of them are:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\qopml.dll (TR/Dldr.ConHook.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rxmfpocj.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vuowpofk.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\qxmkabqt.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hdowabki.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\DOCUME~1\RONPROS~1\rxmfpocj.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)

I am at a loss. Usually I was always able to manually delete those kind of files in Safe Mode.
Here is my Hijack log (scanned in Safe Mode, after multiple cleanings):

Last week, I was unable to install Microsoft updates. They failed every time. I overcame this by doing a system restore to an earlier date before the previous updates. They then installed. However I was left with Microsoft Net framework 3.5 Service pack 1 which failed to install. I went to Microsoft download site and downloaded from there.
The my troubles started, in that now on opening my machine it tries to configure these updates and says on screen "configuring 3 of 3" gets to 87% then closes automatically and restarts the process overagain.
I tried to open in "safemode" but exactly the same thing happens. Is there anything I can do to stop this, or am I forced in to doing a restore to factory settings, or I note that I have another option of "last known good configuration (advanced)". As I am not advanced this causes me concern. Any suggestions are most welcome.

If he has his data backed up, He can install by booting from the win7 disc, deleteing partitions and installing.

Otherwise, see if any of this helps:

If you have the Dell System restore ( not all Dells do ) you can use that and you will not need a install CD

If not, You can get a reinstallation guide specific to your Dell here

How can I get the debugger installed to see what is causing this BSOD?

I have two questions. I can not boot to safe mode after I have installed ComboFix. Is there a way to fix this? Secondly, I recently attained a virus/spyware/malware program on my computer and it took ages to remove. I used malwarebytes, superantispyware, avg scan, trend micro house call, hijack this, smitfraudfix, and winsockfix. Everything seems to be working fine now except when I do a google seach. If I search for something in Google and click on a link it works, but if I go back and click on another link it takes me to a lame site somewhere. I've scanned my registery to see if it was a problem with my hklm\system\ccs\services\tcpip\parameters to see if there was some hijacked ip's in there, but not was found. So I have no clue what else could be causing this. All my scans come up clean now. Thanks in advance.

HI GUYS. I badly need help. My PC is acting weird. The symptoms are enumerated below. Suggestions are very much welcome. I found a similar thread with almost the exact symptoms. The guy found a solution. I am really hope I'll find mine. Please do take time to read my post.

I first found out about the infection about two days after the internet connection at home was restored.(My provider had a routine maintenance check up for the lines in my neighborhood.) I can't really say when is the exact date of the attack. So here is a list of symptoms of the infection/attack?.

1. McAfee anti virus stopped working.

2. Can't install anti virus. Tried to install other anti virus. The list includes AVG, Kaspersky, and Nod 32 but all failed.

3. The IE and opera browsers does not work but firefox is fine.

4. Can't connect to Yahoo! Messenger. Prompts a message telling to try again. Every time I do, it prompts the message again.

5. Can't boot in safe mode. When I try to boot in safe mode, it loads all the drivers and reboots again. Normal mode is fine.

Note: Since my pc is sooooooooo slow, I reformatted my pc hoping the problem would go away. Unfortunately, it didn't do anything good with regards to the infection. It did make my pc a little bit faster though. Also, I can now use the opera and ie. Still, the problems persist.

I have been trying to fix this strange issue. At first my laptop running windows XP professional started going into a reboot loop. Only Safe mode (even safe mode with networking) used to work. I tried to restore to an earlier install and that didnt work.

After trying to everything I could including running various spyware and antivirus scans, enabling, disabling drivers etc, I decided to format the whole drive.

I even fixed the MBR using FIXMBR

To cut the story short.. even with a brand new formatted (NOT QUICK Format) hard drive and reinstalling XP Pro, once the laptop starts up, it either hangs during normal boot or goes into a reboot loop. I then have to again go into SAFE MODE to get it to start.

This is really puzzling cause if it was a RAM or powersupply issue, it shouldnt be so stable in Safe Mode. By the way I did try to remove the RAM module. I have done a CHKDSK too and all seems OK.

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Answer:XP keeps rebooting even after clean install.. Safe Mode is OK

Hey Hoo! If booting in safe mode is OK, it may be that one of your VxD drivers doesn't like something about you're hardware. Create a copy a your current HW profile, rename it, and disable ALL hardware resources. When it reboots it will ask you which hardware profile you want started. If it works, I would go back to the HW profile you just created, and enable just 1 piece of hardware at a time and then reboot.

I may be infected with a virus. I am scanning using Norton right now and OneCare won't turn on its firewall, telling me that I am 'At Risk'.

If nessesary, could I install antivirus software like Norton on my computer using Safe Mode? Note that it is likely I have been infected.

If you need anymore information, please feel free to ask.

EDIT: Also know that recently my computer had been randomly freezing in the past three weeks. I remember I stumbled onto a website where it suddenly told me that 'MY COMPUTER WAS INFECTED'. From experience I knew it was spyware, and instead of saying YES or NO on the warning popup, I clicked the X. Norton immeditely told me I was infected and tried 5 times to remove it. Then the warnings from Norton stopped, thinking that it finally got the trojan.

Hi,I apologize if this should be posted in a different section....since I am baffled with this and do not even know where to start even though I would consider myself with somewhat fundamentally adequate knowledge with computers...I have a Sony Vaio laptop VGN-N130G I bought over 2 years ago. I used this generally for a portable station for my music software (serato) and I do not store files on the laptop, rather I have a external HD that I connect to the laptop to run the music software. I used the music software for one of my jobs as a DJ.One day when I went to use my laptop to access my music software, the boot up screen kept on going in loops--it would go from initial boot up to loading windows then for a split second a blue screen would come up then it goes right back to the initial boot up.I thought to go F8 into the boot menu to load windows in safe mode to see what is going on, but even that attempt was not working: even if I choosed to load in safe mode, after lines of script scrolled by and before it actually load into windows, it goes back into the initial boot then obviously to the menu saying "windows was not successfully loaded previously" with the safe mode options....Any help with this is greatly appreciated!!!Happy Holidaysmasaro

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I've got a peculiar and suspicious problem, but an expert in the Malware Removal forum found no infection on my computer (see the thread here.)

One of the symptoms I'm seeing is that the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) installer will not complete without errors in Windows XP Pro SP3 after a normal boot. After acknowledging the errors during the install routine (which are always the same, a screenshot is attached to this thread), the installer seems to finish. However, the second symptom is that MBAM then will not run due to the same pop-up error message. It's a Visual C++ Runtime Library error that says, "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." Please see the screenshot in this Malware Removal thread.

I know that normally, some malware will disallow running the normal filename for MBAM, so the first thing I tried was renaming the file to something else, including using different file extension such as .com, .bat, .scr, and .pif. None of these renaming attempts worked. This is where I started to observe really strange behavior. After uninstalling my first MBAM install attempt, I found that I could install MBAM when booted to Safe Mode (after changing the registry to allow this and starting the installer service in Safe Mode). After the install I could also run MBAM in safe mode. I then rebooted to normal mode, and MBAM sti... Read more

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

Answer:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Hello prerunner97,

You could try a Clean Startup and see if you can determine a startup program you have that is causing the issue.
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

You stated "I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains."
Does that mean you found malware, and removed what was found?
If so, maybe there are still some malware problems?
I'm no Malware expert, but there is a SF System Security forum where you could add a thread explaining your issue, and experts there might be able to help you.

When I try to start Windows XP in normal mode I get the blue screen after a few minutes and a message that says ?Driver IRQL not less or equal? and then a series of Stop codes. As of a couple days ago, I have not been able to connect to most websites. If I do, it's after repeatedly attempting, and even then it may only load half way. Google will load most of the time, as will other low information websites. After doing a little experimenting with streaming media, I found that it will allow a small amount of information in every minute or so. While in safe mode with networking, everything internet based works perfectly fine.
I have run many different scanners (tdsskiller, avast, malwarebytes, ccleaner, adwcleaner, etc), which do find things, but nothing that ends up fixing the issue. I am using windows 7. I am not sure if this is malware or maybe even something that is occurring due to user ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My notebook is infected with flec006, srosa, bagle, downld, hldrrr, mdelk, etc. Run ComboFix, OTCleanIt, Malwarebytes, SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyware, HJT, with no luck. Since I have no wireless connectivity, I can't post the log files. I tried using a USB drive, and as soon as I hooked it to this PC, my AV software poped-up a warning window notifying me of an infection in the drive.
If I can get back to my wireless connectivity, then I can post the logs. Please help.

THANK YOU in advance!!!

Answer:notbook no safe mode, no wireless, no hidden files

One way or the other, we need to see the logs. Are you saying that our thumb drive is infected or that the av on the thumb drive recognizes the infections on your computer? Do you have a different thumb drive> Can you copy the logs to a cd? We would also need you to run the MGTools and get us the

Hi, I set up Win 8/8.1 Pro with a normal and safe mode option in the boot menu.

After my Win 10 install attempt, I was intrigued to find I had the options of booting to

Win 10
Win 8.1 Pro (Safe Mode)

after a restart. True in both the black and white and the blue versions.

(The wording isn't exact, but you see what I mean).

Is this an MS oversight?

Thanks. David

Hello malpert and welcome to BC

In order to assist you, we need a bit more information.

What is your operating system: Windows XP, Vista, etc.?

I see that you have problems installing security programs. Do you have security programs already installed? If so, please name them, and let us know if these programs are working.

I tried installing a driver of an old Umax scanner and during the reboot Vista locked up, and will only boot into Safe Mode. I had turned off System Restore when removing a virus and hadn't turned it back on yet, so I don't have that as an option. I ran the Vista Windows file checker and have attached the log file.

I have also tried the Vista startup repair tool, but, that didn't work either. As I can only run in safe mode i can't reinstall vista, I would have to do a full reformat and reinstall, which I would like to avoid if I can.

I'm running on windows xp operating system and I figured my system got infected from a flash drive I used. I didn't have any anti-virus in place while this happened because I was yet to install it. I downloaded different types of anti-virus and when i clicked install/run, it won't process anything and exit right away.

I tried booting into safe mode, it won't go in either. Instead it restarts the pc. I tried booting into safe mode by changing the boot.ini file and my pc ended up in a continuous reboot sequence. Thankfully I was able to restore booting it to normal but the malware is still present. Regedit and taskmanager is disabled.

Here is my hijackthis this log.

Alright, the only way I can accurately portray my predicament is via numbered flow chart:

1. Wake up sleeping computer, nothing happens, starts humming faster and faster, so I pull the plug.

2. Turn on computer, goes through the ASUS screen, then the mother board screen has some weird pixelation on the left scree, like some lines or something. Windows is loading....then black screen forever. do this 1 or 2 more times.

3. Go to System Repair and System Restore. Repair fails and tells me a Boot Driver is failing. Restore fails each time.

4. Hold F1, go to boot menu, hit F8, select Safe Mode. Safe Mode works, fantastic.

5. Do AVG Defrag, Disk Clean, and Disk Repair. Then I get a blue "Dumping Physical Memory" screen.

6. Go back to Safe Mode, use boot disk, tell it to un/re-install windows.

7. Come back later and find it in Phys Mem dump loop, pop it into Safe Mode again. I then see two Windows 7 OSs to choose from, pick the bottom one. Says it can't complete installation in Safe Mode, restart it normal, Phys Dump loop.

8. I do the same thing for the top Win 7 choice, same thing.

9. I've back up all my files, and have drivers/boots disks for everything I own. How do I wipe my hard drive and start fresh?

My dad restored his computer to its factory settings while Windows 8 was in safe mode, attempting to remove a virus, and now every time the computer is booted, an error message appears, saying that Windows is not able to install because safe mode is still active. Is there a way to disable safe mode so that Windows set up can be continued?

Answer:Windows unable to install - stuck in safe mode

If you like, you could use either step 6 in Option Four or step 6 in Option Five to start Windows 8 back in normal mode.

If I try to run most setup.exe files from Windows Explorer (including Desktop) nothing happens and the Explorer folder (or Desktop) freezes. Doesn't matter if I click normally or as an Administrator, and doesn't matter from which User Account. The behavior is not consistent among all setup.exe files, but most of them fail. I cannot discover any pattern (size, date, name, etc) for which do or don't work, but the ones that do, always do, and the ones that don't, always don't.
The only way that I've been able to consistently install programs is in Safe Mode or from a USB drive.
I've tried disabling all Services and all Startup programs in Normal Mode but it does not help.

I've been having a lot of boot problems, currently I can only boot in safe mode and I can't install .msi packages. Both of these have happened before and I've fixed them. Twice before, I would get messages: "NT Authority: System The DCOM Server Process has failed to launch..." And I had fixed that both times, but now I don't even get a message. I just see my desktop background, and then the screen blacks out and the computer restarts. Also, just last week I couldn't install '.msi's. I was told by the error message that their were policies set in place by my administrator to guard against such things, but I am admin. It turns out it was because of my DCOM Server Process Launcher not running, or at least enabling it again was what I perceived had fixed it. And to sort out any confusion, I was using my computer normally with the DCOM turned on after I had fixed it, it just took me awhile to take the risk of trying, to see if that was why I couldn't install things. It's not that I enabled it again, and immediately started having problems.

Here's my Hijackthis log. I'm not sure what the official rule on this is. Do I attach or paste? I'll know in the future, in the extremely unfortunate case of needing to again.

Hi, orijimi

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers.
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi there. I'm running on a dell dimension 2350, windows XP Professional SP3. My PC's specs are Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 cpu 1.80GHz, 1G ram.

With that out of the way, that's about the extent of my computer knowledge. I reformatted my computer a few days ago due to viruses, spyware, the whole shabang. I couldn't locate my windows disc so I borrowed a SP3 windows professional disc from a friend, and directly after installing, my computer displays the windows logo and then hangs at a black screen.

I really am out of ideas, I've been troubleshooting for the past 3 days. At the moment I'm on a fresh install of windows, and I have downloaded the audio, video, and chipset drivers from the website. I am out of ideas to solve this problem, so any recommendations I welcome with open arms.

(The only possible idea I have at this point is possibly my power supply. If there is any way I could test this please inform me)

I read the tutorial and I am alredy good at since I fixed many many computers...
However this particular one wont start in safe mode
the following message is suplied:
A problem is preventing your computer from being tested for valid registration.
The it logs off and I cannot log back in, but within 15 seconds it just restarts.
So I said ok let me run anti viruses
I run trendmicro and get 24 infections all are JAVA and SUB7 trojans, cannot be fixed cleaned or remover, norton keeps quaranteeing these things but they just keep coming back
Then when I go to the Norton online scan, The following message occours:
Your security settings do not allow websites to use ActiveX controls....
NOW I did go into my security settings and I made sure that ActiveX control is enabled in all possible options
Reinstall winodws?
Or run the removal tools without the virus scans?
If it hellps any the it is the about:blank thing thats causing the problems.

Answer:Cant start in safe mode, cant install ActiveX control

Laptop is aspire7720zg

Last nite it was sluggish so I manually rebooted. Couldn't access it on restart due to it locking up at welcome screen...the circle kept spinning. Rebooted in safe mode it froze up at Classpnp.sys

Rebooted a few times... Nothing. Decided to reformat partition c where win 7 was on and do a fresh install of win 7 it got thru most of it and rebooted I could get past the date set up and comp naming and then it would give me problems on restart where it would forever customize themes and media player....

Now I'm able to access partition d where thankfully I kept my data and media so I am currently transferring the files thru the load drives window option of the windows 7 disk I have inserted... My last option is to reformat the d drive as well after I move all the files and delete the drive and make a new partition, two of them again... But I don't want to do that just yet if you guys maybe can help me out, tel me what I'm missing?

Im afraid I'd the hard drive went bad.? But then if it did why is then am I able to access partition d of it since physically it's same hard drive isn't it.

Remember all this time I can't get to the desktop... Even safe mode locked up at Classpnp.sys.... What does this mean, hard drive went to bad or sector is corrupted to the point a reformat doesn't do the job ?

What to do

Answer:Can't access safe mode, win 7 won't complete install even on reformat
