Found Rootkit.0access with Malwarebytes. It has diabled Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Update and Windows Firewall.

Question: Found Rootkit.0access with Malwarebytes. It has diabled Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Update and Windows Firewall.

I tried removing the root kit with malware bytes with no success. I did however remove 10 trojans though.
I can't start the services needed to run my security stuff. I'm scared!

Preferred Solution: Found Rootkit.0access with Malwarebytes. It has diabled Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Update and Windows Firewall.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

MSE is fine.

Microsoft is adding Microsoft Security Essentials to Windows Update as a Optional update. No word yet on when or if the update will ever be a required update. Some companies has complained saying if this is a required update Microsoft would be cornering the market on Anti-Virus. Companies are also saying this could reek havoc on the personal computer since the user might already have an anti-virus installed. Most users have Windows Update set to Automatic so again this could be a very bad thing for the unbeknown user. We will have to wait and see how this plays out in the near future.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Now A Windows Update

They may wanna be careful doing this, as of now, a lot of software disables the windows defender service for some kinda incompatibility reason. I would hate to see what Microsoft installed software would do to the AV software, I know some AV software enjoys locking a system down if it ends up being disabled.

Hey peeps, just thought i'd give you all a heads up, got a notification from windows update telling me that there are new updates available, these updates are windows live essentials and microsoft security essentials.

These consist of several programs:

Microsoft security essentials is a new program developed by microsoft which takes a new look at windows defender, there's a new, cleaner interface, new icon, and seems pretty fast after the first quick scan... screenshot below:

live essentials is the same live essentials pack you get from the microsoft live site, not much new here, bing bar is included instead of the live search bar, that is all.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials - Windows Update

Thanks for the update.

MSE gave me a pop-up advising me there was an upgrade and inviting me to download and install it which I did. To be honest, I really didn't pay enough attention to the program (except when I got it a while back and set it up) so I don't really see much of any difference in the looks. I have noticed it does scan a bit quicker though - so an MS update/upgrade that actually improved things for a change.

I downloaded the whole Essentials 2011 Suite about a week ago or so. I like some of the changes and not some of the others. I preferred the Live Toolbar to the Bing toolbar - you could customize it more and could give more space to the search box (which I can't seem to be able to widen and think it can't be done). I also wish there were a way to turn off the alert just because I have pop-ups enabled - it should allow you to disable alerts for the items you choose to enable so if a real alert occurs you can notice it. While I like WLM better than Windows Mail, I'm still having trouble connecting to one of my newsgroups (but otherwise it works fine) - though I rarely use it except for newsgroups as I use Outlook 2007 instead. I'm on the fence about Messenger. It seems to take up too much of the screen now with details I'm not really interested in (but end up reviewing because they're there). I don't really use the other applications but downloaded them anyway so I'd be able to fire them up to help answer questions about them in the forum.

Hello,

Thanks for this awesome site. I've often used its advice to resolve other security issues on my computer, but this time I'm stymied. A couple days ago (the 9th, I believe) my computer began to play random music, and I noticed my Microsoft Security Essentials was disabled. I attempted to reenable it, only to be told that the service wasn't started. It was actually no longer listed in services.msc, and I noticed that the Windows Update service was no longer listed too. I ran Malwarebytes, which revealed my computer was infected with rootkit.0accessh. This was removed on restart, but I could still no longer reenable Security Essentials and Windows Update. I then ran rkill, which disabled system32/services.exe. This caused Windows to restart. Following advice on another thread, I replaced system32/services.exe with a copy from another folder. After this I again ran rkill, which disabled a different (but still essential process), svchost.exe, which caused another Windows restart. Running Malwarebytes again, I now have two unidentified "Trojan Process"es, and I expect if I ran rkill, there would be another essential process that's bad.

(On Windows Update I get error 80246008 [which is a problem with Background Intelligent Transfer Service]; on windows security essentials the error has to do with update not working.)

Your assistance is much appreciated.

MSE just had its real time protection turned on, as I apparently did not verify my Windows genuine status, even though I'm positive I did. I didn't see any button to run a check, so I tried to turn on real-time Security Essentials couldn't turn on real time-protection This operation returned because the timeout period expired. Click help for more information about this problem. Error code: 0x800705b4 So I didn't feel like dealing with this, and just decided to do an uninstall/re-install. When I tried THAT (via add/remove programs in control panel), I got this message: The Security Essentials Installation Wizard is missing a filter manager rollup package needed to complete the installation. To continue installing Security Essentials, you must first download the required package. (I click it, and nothing happens) I googled this problem, and found a possible solution on the Microsoft support forums, which was to do a Windows Update. So I try THAT, and even that won't even load, as I get THIS message: The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context. Talk about annoying. Help is appreciated, because I really don't know what to do now!

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

Hi forum,

I'm having some problem about a week ago with Microsoft security essentials bugging out on me and not opening or updating. Basically the message I got on opening MSE was windows cannot access specified path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the file. Upon reading this about a week ago, I think! I proceeded to foolishly downloading a Zeroroot access program and a few MSE alternatives. Since then I have still been unable to re-install MSE by deleting all components in the registry.

The error code I get with trying to re-install MSE is 0x80070643

Having then unistalled the zeroaccess program and the previous alternative antivirus programs, I still cannot get MSE working, and I now have a windows 7 update error. The new system update I believe may be to do with security as-well!! The error code on doing a windows 7 update is 80070005, and it did cut out at 9% every time. (although now I think it is just 0%)
Can someone please help me as I have had a very successful streak of avoiding viruses by always usin MSE. I don't want, and can't afford to get a virus attack, not to mention Im runnign windows 7 ultimate so I need the windows 7 updates too because the ultimate can be dodgy sometimes. Nb the update I cannot do is 1.4mb but I am anticipating windows will throw me a new update any day soon which could be anywhere from 30mb to 200mb and it could fail all of it leaving me prone to attacks.

I can not get Windows 7 Update to work at all.  I receive a message that the service is currently not running and to restart the computer.  This does nothing.  I have gone into services under "services.msc" and windows update is not listed as running or stopped.

I came across this issue while trying to get Microsoft Security Essentials to update.  I keep getting an error code.  Of course now that I am writing this and try to get the error code to reference, the update works.  The MSE not updating is a chronic problem for me.

I am still fairly new to the forum, so please let me know if there is additional information, or I make a slip-up.

Thank you.

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

A year or so ago I had a paid subscription of AVG. When I had a bad pc virus that had slipped by AVG, the technician used Malwarebytes to get rid of the problem, which it did. Since then I am using the free version of Malwarebytes. Then came Microsoft Security Essentials. I added it. I use both of these and have had no problems. I am just wondering if it is necessary to have both; or which of the two is better. Your help is appreciated.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs. Malwarebytes

i would keep using both

Ok so this isn't on my computer, its on my boyfriend's. I'm not on it right now so I'll try to be as detailed as possible.
Its a windows 7 and it got a virus or actually a few I believe after trying to download Microsoft word through a torrent.
I tried doing the Malwarebytes in safe mode and then downloading and running Microsoft security essentials. It seemed to work at first, but as soon as I started browsing the internet whenever you click something like 4 popups will come up.
What can I do next?
I'm sorry if this isn't detailed enough I'll try to get more information as soon as possible.

Answer:Malwarebytes and Microsoft security essentials didn't work. What next?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop that was infected. It's not my machine so I am unsure how it got infected but when trying to remove the virus/trojan/rootkit I tried a few things.

I first ran Microsoft's Security Essentials, it installed but when trying to scan, it all of sudden was blocked and was unable to restart itself. Even restarting the PC didn't help.

Then I downloaded Malwarebytes, renamed the installer to 89-setup.exe, ran it, renamed the mbam.exe file to my92.exe and ran it, I was able to update it, but as soon as it started to scan, the program was shutdown and the my92.exe file was locked from access, so I couldn't re-run it.

It also appears to have disabled and removed the originally installed Norton AntiVirus in a similar fashion. Also has disabled Windows Defender.

I ran Combofix after renaming it, finished the stages and rebooted the machine, but beyond that I am not sure what to do.

I can post the log if needed.

Answer:Malwarebytes. Microsoft Security Essentials, etc all shutdown in seconds

As no logs have been posted, I am shifting this topic from the specialized HiJack This forum to the Am I Infected forum.==>PLEASE DO NOT NOW POST LOGS<== unless a log is specifically requested.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/494411/cant-reinstall-microsoft-security-essentials-error-code-0x80070643/

Start of problem:
5/12/13 – Some false internet security program popped up.  My husband either closed it or hit cancel but then Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) quit working.

Steps taken 5/12 and 5/13 (yesterday):
System restore.  Restore succeeded.  MSE still didn’t work.

Tried to uninstall MSE.  Couldn’t do it using Add/Remove Programs.

Error box was labeled Microsoft Security Client and said “An error has occurred in the program during initialization.  If this problem continues, please contact your administrator.  Error Code:  0x80073b01.”

Downloaded Malwarebytes.  It found some Trojan (didn’t write it down).  Still couldn’t uninstall MSE.

Finally able to uninstall MSE Microsoft Security Essentials using Microsoft article at support.microsoft.com/kb/2483120.  However, not able to reinstall MSE.

Removed Malwarebytes in case it was the problem - conflicting AV software - even though I run both on my other computer.

Went through all the steps in windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/i-cant-install-microsoft-security-essentials.  Still can't install MSE.  Error code is 0x80070643.

Hi

I was hit by 3 or 4 trojans, at least 4 virus files and who knows what else. Right now, I cannot start or run Microsoft Security Essentials. Therefore my netbook must still be infected. I have no idea what to do next, and need help.

I have a Netbook with windows XP home edition. No CD rom, disabled Boot from external (so I can't boot from a USB key)

- had the trojan dos alureon.a which seemed to allow fqb.exe, fqc.exe, fqd.exe, and fqe.exe to be installed. The effect of these programs, among other things, was to disable Microsoft Security Essentials and the windows firewall
- I manually disabled my internet connection
- I used TDSSKiller to remove the one trojan, and rootkit virus was detected and removed
- I ended up going into safe mode with DOS prompt to force delete the fq*.exe files
- ran malwarebytes' anti-malware (full scan) and found and quarantined 2 trojan downloaders and 1 trojan fraud.pack
- used regedit to remove O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [8DDYX0ZBPZ] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\Zqd.exe (User 'SYSTEM') and O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [XMZH42I4GI] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\Zqc.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
- ran HiJack This
- ran DDS by sUBS and saved files DDS.txt and Attach.txt
- ran GMER.exe from the desktop, no activity reported

However, I can't get MS Security Essentials to even open. I have

- deleted and reinstalled the program
- used Process Explorer on run32dll.exe to see if it was pointing to an alternate DLL to run (the command line says giv... Read more

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials won't run after rootkit/virus/trojan

I've rebooted a few times while trying to resolve the issue. It's really taking a very long time to start up, and there's some kind of wickedly bad sound coming out of it now. I mean, the startup tune sounds like it's vibrating the speaker due to volume. The virus did have a sound feature which was some voices, guys talking, no idea what they were saying or if it was English. Any ideas folks? Or do I just copy what I can salvage and take it in to Best Buy to have the thing fixed and a newer OS installed?

Hello

I was using my laptop w/windows 7 Home Edition and a pop up came up saying that my computer is infected. I tried to run Microsoft Security Essentials and message said it could not be found. I tried to re-install and message said I already had it installed and could only have one copy installed per computer. I tried to open again and every time I try I look at my task manager and ajh.exe*32 starts to run. It is redirecting my internet traffic as well. I search for ajh.exe*32 in this forum and was not able to find anything. I tried system restore and when I got it to work and rebooted the same pop up came up. I would sure appreciate some advice on what to do to fix or where I might find the fix on here......thanks in advance for any help!

Have just recently change from Kaspersky Anti virus 2011 to Microsoft security essentials and was just wondering if I need more protection that I lost when changing.

Do I need a firewall in addition to MSE ?

Kaspersky; I was happy with for years but it seemed to slow down my computers with each new year's upgrade.

Also, was just given a laptop that is running Comodo Internet Security. Is it a good product ?

Thanks,,,,

I have both Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Security Essentials (incl. Firewall, Auto Updates and VIRUS PROTECTION) running on my old pc. Since they both have a virus protection, do I need both? It seems that this pc is always downloading updates and slows the pc terribly.Wellgo

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Security Essentials

"Windows Security Essentials"Are you sure that is the exact name? Maybe I've missed something but I've never heard of it.It is not good to have two Anti-Virus programs running in real time, for the reason you gave. They tend to "check each other" and cause slow downs.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I was using a program used to split videos named "Power Video Cutter" which I obtained from download.com and scanned for viruses using MS security essentials before installing it when I suddenly received a message from MS security essentials indicating that an exploit was found on my pc: Win32/CVE-2010-0818.gen

Category: Exploit
Description: This program is dangerous and exploits the computer on which it is run.
Recommendation: Remove this software immediately.
Microsoft Security Essentials detected programs that may compromise your privacy or damage your computer. You can still access the files that these programs use without removing them (not recommended). To access these files, select the 'Allow' action and click 'Apply actions'. If this option is not available, log on as administrator or ask the local administrator for help.

Can someone tell me what exactly that virus is and why download.com would make a file that has a virus available for download?

I tried following the directions from a different post but now I'm not sure if the Trojan is gone. I'm still getting a pop-up from malwarebytes but when I scanned it yesterday it didn't come up with anything. The computer is running at the same speed -- it's choppy at times but not terrible. Also, sometimes when I start up the computer it automatically does a complete system check instead of going to the start menu. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I really need some help...

I think i might have clicked on a fake adobe flash update, it says update successfully and now I found both my windows firewall and MS security essentials (and probably more which I don't know) can't be started.

When I try to start the real-time protection in MS Security Essentials, it says 'Couldn't start the security essentials service' error code 0x80070424. I believe I am getting the same error code with Windows firewall....

So is there anyway to get rid of the virus?

Thanks in advance.

A week or two ago, I created an account for my roommate to use my computer. Evidently there was something bad on an old USB storage stick she had, because shortly after she used it, Microsoft Security Essentials found many Trojan:Win32/Sirefef files along with a VirTool:INF/Autorun.gen!B and VirTool:Win32/VBInject.gen!EP shown as created that day. I had MSE remove them, but a new set of Sirefef reappeared a few days later in another MSE quarantine.

I scanned my roommate's USB with MSE, and had it remove the Inject thing from that too. On 7/12, I ran a scan with SB-S&D and found tracking cookies only. Same result on 7/19 running SuperAntiSpyware via alternate start.

That was when I posted for help here.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic461530.html
We ran TDSSkiller, SecurityCheck, FSS, MiniToolBox, Defogger, and GMER, before I was referred here.

I have kept my computer off as much as possible, because the MSE quarantine log showed created time/dates for the files as being every 4-5 mins. Figured keeping it off would slow the progress.
I just completed the Prep. Guide, and my DDS log will follow. However, when I tried to use GMER, the only selectable options were Services, Registry, Files, C:\, and ADS. Everything else was greyed out. Scan found no system modifications, and no log was made.

I created an account on my computer for my roommate. It appears that there was something nasty on a USB storage drive she had from several years ago.

Microsoft Security Essentials found many Trojan:Win64/Sirefef and Trojan:Win32/Sirefef files along with a VirTool:INF/Autorun.gen!B and VirTool:Win32/VBInject.gen!EP that I told it to remove on 7/12. Today the scan came up with a multitude of the same Sirefef files.

I scanned her USB with MSE, and had it remove the Inject thing from that too.

On 7/12, I ran a scan with SB-S&D and found tracking cookies only. Same result today running SuperAntiSpyware via alternate start.

Need to stop them from coming back. Read a little bit of online lit about the Sirefef being stealthy, so I guess the core has gone under MSE's radar. Please help.

Last night I noticed that the MSE icon was flashing red. When I clicked on it there was a note that some of the sirefef's were on there. I tried to remove them and updated MSE. When it said it needed to reboot to complete update, I did. Now I keep getting the message Windows has a critical error and will reboot in 1 minute. It reboots over and over. I tried safe mode and it does the same thing. Just reboots. I do not see any options to repair Vista.

I searched online and downloaded Hirems Boot CD. It will bring up Mini Win xp. I plugged into a wired network updated the definitions on the Avira that is part of the bootup cd. It is now running a scan which seems to be taking forever. Been running now for at least 6-7 hours. I see lots of messages about archive not completely scanned. Reason:maximum uncompressed size reached. I've read this can take days????

I see lots of messages on here about downloading programs to run. Not sure if I can do that on the laptop since it reboots after 1 minute. I'd appreciate any help. I've used computers a long time, but some of what I read on here seems kind of confusing.

Hello,

Thought I would, finally, download the virus protection that it seems everyone likes in Windows Essentials.
Running W7, the 64 bit vers.

But, I guess the latest "gimmick" is that all the download sites, that I thought, and imply, are MS sites are some other third party sites that also automatically change your Browser to Chrome, and install AVG !

Can anyone point me to the official MS site please, and what I should select to just have the anti-virus
component installed ?

BTW: how does it compare to AVAST free ? Differences ?

Thanks,
Bob

Anybody running Microsoft's Security Essentials on Windows 7 x64?

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (retail upgrade) and after doing all my installs I installed Microsoft's Security Essentials. At first I did a "quick scan and it took like 10 minutes, however doing a full scan took at least 8.5 hours! This is going through 10 partitions on 3 hard drives.

By contrast Kaspersky takes about 60 minutes or less to do a full system scan the same system.

Is there a problem with MSE doing full scans and has anyone else noticed this.

On the positive side I visited a website posted by a forum member on one of the game forums I visit and MSE flag a file trying to install itself on my computer. Good job.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows 7

10 partitions and 3 drives. Thats whats taking so long. You might try adding some exclusions. MSSE>Settings>Exclude File Types.

I added quite a few exclusions since there arent any be default. Every other virus scanner has a default set. So you will need to add some to MSSE. Thsi will speed up scanning... Here are some to get you started..

AVI, BMP, CHM, INI, ICO, JPG, HXW, MPG, MP3, PNG, TXT, WMV, XML

You can also exclude know safe folders under the Excluded Files & Locations.

I am running microsoft security essentials (with realtime protection) on windows 7, however when I generate a system health report it indicates the following error message:- The Security Center has not recorded an anti-virus product. The Security Center is unable to identify an active anti-virus application. Either there is no anti-virus product installed or it is not recognized. What could be causing it to ignore the security provided by Microsoft Security Essentials. Because The virus guard is visible on the taskbar and running as well as it is fully updated and shows on the taskbar with the GREEN icon - i.e. system is protected.

Hi

I've just been helped by bleepingcomputer.com to remove a nasty bug from my computer.

Now the question is what I should use of the software I have available.

1. I can use windows defender, windows firewall and microsoft security essentials. All those are free and fits in nicely with my windows vista OS. However, I'm don't have a lot of good experience with windows built in software...

2. I can use Norman security suite (not pro) that I get for free from the bank I use (all clients get free licenses to this software). I've tried that program before, and was quickly very annoyed by all the pop-ups and messages I got all the time. It also made my system work very slow.

3. Last now, I bought a licence for lavasoft's Ad-Aware Pro. It runs nice, doesn't slow down the computer much and seems to contain whatever I need as a normal internet user. problem is that I've been told that this software isn't very safe at all, and that I should use something else.

Any recommendations out there?

Answer:Windows defender+firewall+security essentials VS Norman VS Lavasoft Ad-Aware Pro

Hi NOR_Chrass,

Ad Aware Pro is medium - quality software and it has got the 2.5 /5 rating in this year's review on pcmag (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2402182,00.asp).

Personally, I would recommend you Avast Free Antivirus, which is light on the system, completely free and has a very good reputation - 4/5 stars on pcmag (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2401321,00.asp).

If you choose to stay with Ad Aware Pro, I would advise to disable Windows Firewall (Ad Aware has built-in firewall) but to leave Windows Defender turned on.

If you choose Avast, you would need to leave Windows Firewall turned on but disable Windows Defender.

Best of luck.

It covers basic security stuff, i skimmed through the book and it is pretty in-depth with some great material, I think I am going to pick this up.

Answer:Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials

MSE is anti virus, Defender is anti malware. Rather than Defender, I personally would go for the free Superantispyware, but there are lots of other free ones.
I used to use MSE for antivirus, but have now switched to the free version of AVG.

Hi

Can anyone help me with this. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed on my Windows 7 PC. Until recently this has completed a full scan without any problems. Now it has begun stalling after roughly 45 minutes. I ran a full scan over the past two nights but with the same results. I can do a Quick Scan OK and I can do a Full Scan in Safe Mode, but not in Normal Mode. I have had Malwarebytes Premium installed for ages and it hasn't caused any conflict with MSE. However, recently I installed Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware (both free copies). I uninstalled Ad-Aware and that is when the problem started.

I have unistalled (with great difficulty) MSE and reinstalled it but to no avail. I would welcome any help and suggestions.

Many thanks

George

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Windows 7 stalls

If it was after you uninstalled Ad-Aware that the problem started, have you tried re-installing it? Set both Ad-Aware and Spybot only to run on demand, don't have them running in the background in conflict with MSE. Have you tried uninstalling Spybot?

Have you tried a System Restore position from before the problem started?

Hi - I have just installed MSE on an old laptop which already has Windows Defender. Should I uninstall Windows Defender? Thanks.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Defender

The 'old' Defender is anti malware only, so can run alongside MSE. On Windows 8, Defender is itself a combination of the two (ie, there is no downloadable MSE for W8).

I've been onto all kinds of sites, reading about people who cannot start windows defender, and cannot start it manually. Relax!

First Windows defender is only back up antivirus software graciously adapted into Vista, really its only for those who are not running any antivirus software at all. Sooo, if your running any other antivirus software you should disable defender anyway. Multiple antivirus packages running together is not a good thing. They litterally fight against each other, so only use one.

Secondly, defender will not run, and you cannot start it manually if you are running microsoft security essentials. Essentials will automatically turn off defender. Don't freak out, this is supposed to happen. If you really want defender to run, you must uninstall essentials. Although, I highly recommend essentials, Norton 360 is also great.

Hi,

I would love for someone to help with an issue I have been having with MS essentials, upon booting up of my laptop I get an error message from MS essentials ( 0x80073b01)

I've had a look around and downloaded various different things to help, hitman pro managed to find three things that I know should not be there but it cant repair it.
these are the notes that hitman pro found:

   Redirection: Backup -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

   Redirection: Drivers -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

   Redirection: en-us -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

I have no idea how to fix this, I currently cannot search for new updates due to this problem, and it deactivated my firewall also but I have thankfully managed to get that running again ( I think ).

I found a link that is alot like the problem I seem to be having, If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it:

Hi,

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
 rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until instructed.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once the scan has finished running, a file named Rkill.txt should be located on the desktop. Please copy and copy the contents into your next reply.

Hi Guys,

My Brothers laptop running Windows 7 has Windows Bitdefender & Microsoft Security Essentials installed.

Windows Bitfender is turned off and unable to be turned.

My question is should you only have Windows Bitdefender installed on your laptop or just Microsoft Security Essentials installed but not the two programmes which is why Windows Bitfender can't be turned on?

There is one other issue with his laptop where some times when at the desktop his screen goes black for a few seconds  then all the desktop icons enlarge as well as the taskbar bulking out the desktop area.

If he shuts down the laptop the desktop is normal for 5 minutes and sometimes 1 hour then back to the black screen for a few seconds and enlarged icons.

Any suggestions please.

Hi, I will try to keep this to the point. If you need more details let me know.

I ran MBAM and found 3 objects named rootkit.0access on my computer. I restarted in safe mode and ran MBAM again and found 1 more. My computer seemed to be running normal (even before I ran MBAM), but I decided to do a reformat (using system recovery partition). During the process of re-downloading and updating my newly reformatted computer I had 2 possible issues:

1). Internet explorer not working/error, but it works normally now. Error was probably due to lack of updates.

2). When I went to re-download MBAM I was extra cautious and didn't download it the first time. I went through MBAM site and was redirected to CNET for the download. The first time I arrived at CNET the "download now" link was English. The second (and third time) it was in a different language (I think Dutch). Later when I did it again it was back in English. I'm wondering if I might have stumbled upon a hidden manipulation in my default language from the virus or if it was just an error. By the way I downloaded it the 4th time and it works fine.

Anyway, bottom line: Can you view my logs and tell me if I am still infected in any way? My computer seems to be running normally (I think I'm in the free and clear), but I want to make sure there isn't something hidden.

Here are my DDS logs. I couldn't get the GMER log. Every time I run GMER I get a blue screen error and my computer restarts. If I n... Read more

Please let me know if you would like me to run it in safe mode or if I should try something else (I am thinking the BSOD is caused because of a lack of resources).

The red Windows Security shield icon keeps telling me my antivirus isn't turned on or it's out of date.  My green Microsoft Security Essentials castle icon tells me it is working and is up-to-date.  Am I supposed to have Windows antivirus turned off because I have MS Sec. Ess.?  If they're both turned on aren't they competing with each other and overtaxing my CPU?  If I have the Windows Security do I not need the MS Security Essentials?  Are they doing different things?  The Windows product mentions a Firewall but the Security Essentials doesn't.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials AND Windows Security?

you should only have one av in your pc as they might be in conflict or cause problems , i would keep MSE disable the windows one , but i would delete it altogetheryou will still have the firewall working

Hi,

I downloaded security essentials after discovering some malware on my computer from the "Anit-virus 2010" software scam. When I try to start the MSE program, I receive an error message saying "access denied". I had heard that some malware can affect the permission to run programs that are known to detect them. Please help, as my computer currently has no security program up and running.

Thanks,

Hi Aubrey, yes these malware either block tools or just lie and say they are. In either event ley's try it this way. Werun a couple tools to prevent this. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. Thousands of downloads. Countless positive reviews on software blogs around the Internet. It's been quite a ride so far for Microsoft Security Essentials.
In AV Comparative's most recent report on malware removal, MSE was the only free antivirus rated Advanced+. That ranking placed it alongside big names like Norton, Kaspersky, and F-Secure. Security Essentials also beat out technician favorite ESET, which managed only an Advanced rating. Microsoft Security Essentials rated best free antivirus for Windows

Hi,

The symptoms I have are very similar to the ones that were in this thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/496263/access-is-denied-and-disabled-windows-defender-microsoft-security-essentials/

Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials/Forefront Protection have not functioned, presumably do to a trojan (which was removed a month or so ago, and I'm just now addressing the effects it had on these programs). The shortcuts to everything in those folders appears as "C:\Windows\system32\config," and I can't uninstall or do anything to the stuff.

Per the advice in the thread above, I ran the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool. Listed below is my pasted log from FRST.txt, and attached is my Addition.txt file. From there, I am hoping someone can help me move on to the next step. Thanks!

Hi,

I can no longer find where to access the Security Essentials that is built in on Windows 7. I've tried searching on Google but it keeps claiming it needs to be installed when I know it's built-in as I used it a little over a month ago.

Also is their any difference between the built in client and Microsoft Security Essentials. Thanks

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials (Built-In Windows 7 protection)

The built in version is "windows defender" (just search for defender and you will find it) and although it uses the same virus definitions as Security Essentials I don't think it offers the same level of protection or options as MSE itself. Installing MSE automatically disables windows defender.
I would go ahead and install MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

What have your experiences with it?

I have been running it since Dec 10th, I opened the history the other day and found two trojans one removed and one quarantined. This was after having run Malewarebytes and Superantispyware, so it seems to me to have a stronger male-ware section then either of those two. So far it is proving to be very good, now I wonder when MS with throw a price tag on it?

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials update

Did you upload the file to Virus Total to double check? I'm on avast home and I'd be dumbfounded if it warned me or caught two every month.

This could also be due to my boring computing habits. Don't mean to to say you are over zealous and don't surf safe LOL
Plus I assume your MBAM and SAS are free and scanners only, right?
Cheers..

Weird, is this the new version 2.0 of MSE?

Do you have any 3rd party firewall software installed if so what? if you disable it does that help?

If it was all working okay a few days ago, the first thing I would try is a System Restore. If the System Restore does not fix the problem you could then try an uninstall and reinstall MSE from scratch.

This is a actually a sub-thread under a separate discussion on the Windows Updates forum.

In connection with an inability to receive and install Vista updates-in-general over the past three days, it seems that I cannot update the definitions specific to Microsoft Security Essentials. The last automatic update of MSE was July 12, and attempting to download virus and spyware definitions right from the MSE panel now fails unconditionally.

Anyone else with this problem, or anyone with experience in doing some sort of 'manual install' to get around what may be a temporary hiccup in Microsoft Updates for Vista?

Running Vista-64 bit on a Dell desktop; using MSE version 4.9.218.0. Thanks!

Answer:Cannot update Microsoft Security Essentials

Hello again eloctrojim. I seem to be the only forum regular who is using MSE 4.9.218.0, and no I do not have this problem - perhaps because my Windows updates for the month of July were all successfully installed on Tuesday, whereas your system is still choking on them.

Try this: set Windows Update to "never check for updates." If you have disabled a Windows service, re-enable it. Restart the PC, then open MSE and try to manually update definitions via its Update tab (not by checking for Windows updates). Assuming this works, it might be a good time to try the solution for Windows updates suggested in your other thread.

I have windows xp Professional Version 2002 sp3. Seems I got a virus when I down loaded a movie(my bad). Was getting the BSOD, and alerts for Windows Automatic Updates to be turned on. Also I am running Microsoft security essentials which also won't update. Although Malwarebytes updates automatically. I downloaded Superantispyware and ran it 3 times in safe mode .Found and deleted malware. Rebooted and so far no BSOD ( fingers crossed). Still get the alerts for the updates.

Hi, Dick Quinn.
Welcome to The Windows Club.
If you installed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), it includes the anti-spyware engine of Windows Defender. Thus, Windows Defender is turned of with the installation.
Please let us know if you have not installed MSE.

If I have Microsoft Security Essentials "active" I am unable to turn on Windows Defender.
If I turn off MSE then I can turn on Defender.
If I then return to MSE and activate it, Defender is automatically turned off.

Is this normal behavior?
If I can only run one of these, which is the preferred choice?

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender mutually exclusive

Hi, yes that is normal behavior. i would use MSE over defender.

Slightly old news but still worth noting...

Microsoft Security Essentials rated best free antivirus for Windows

Quote:
In AV Comparative's most recent report on malware removal, MSE was the only free antivirus rated Advanced+. That ranking placed it alongside big names like Norton, Kaspersky, and F-Secure. Security Essentials also beat out technician favorite ESET, which managed only an Advanced rating.

It's also worth noting that only three antivirus apps - Norton 2010, eScan, and Security Essentials - scored marks of good or better in removal of malware and removal of leftovers. So not only has MSE beaten free competitors like AVG (version 8.5 tested, not 9.0), Avira, and Avast, it also posted test scores equal to or better than a dozen antivirus programs you'd have to pay for.

I concur. For a free, simple solution for the average home user, nothing beats MSE.

It?s been a while since Microsoft has shared any new information about its free antimalware offering, Microsoft Security Essentials (codenamed ?Morro?). But the Softies are quietly setting the stage for the product, which is slated to launch before the end of the year.
A quick refresher: MSE is the replacement for Windows Live OneCare and a superset of Windows Defender. Microsoft officials have said it is meant for consumers who are unwilling or unable to pay for security software. A number of Microsoft watchers are expecting the final version of MSE to debut in October, given that it is meant to work on XP, Vista and Windows 7 ? and Windows 7 launches on October 22. More than 400,000 testers have downloaded the test version of MSE, according to Microsoft.

My PC has stopped loading webpages in IE and chrome, but will update malwarebytes/SAS and other such programs. I have troedscans and such, but all that seems to work is system restoring to a certain restore point, but even that only gives me webpage access for a few minutes before chrome throws up error 102. I think the problem is "Microsoft security essentials" related as I've had a few of those popups and a new white flag with an red x icon near the clock.

I have tried rkill followed by mbam with no luck, and SAS, it always comes out with my Internet saying connected, and updating certain things, but not loading pages in the browser.

A couple of days ago I ran the usual Windows Update. On this occasion the Malicious Software Removal Tool found an object, I think it was called Win32/sirefef. After restart a window titled "zatray.exe - Ordinal not found" poped up. Coincidentally my Zone Alarm (ZA) icon refused to show up in the notification area. I contacted ZA support who informed me that this was a Windows problem not a ZA problem. I then:
*Ran mbam but couldn't complete the scan (it became very slow so we stopped it)
*Restarted in Safe Mode and scanned using mbam. This time 5 objects were found, all labelled Rootkit.0Access. Three of them were registry entries (HKCU and HKLM), one was in Application Data for Google and another one was in \program files\google\desktop\install... Pressed the button to remove, then
*Restarted into normal mode. The zatray window no longer appeared and ZA came back to life.
*A rescan with mbam, however still showed one Rootkit.0Access.
*Several more cycles of rescans and restarts failed to remove the Rootkit which appears to reside in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_*202EETADPUG

Hello, I was using my Dad's computer to print something when I noticed a very funny default homepage for Firefox. something to do with "Rival Gaming" an addon I have disabled but not been able to delete this far. None of the instructions I found on removing this addon worked, and when I tried to scan with Malwarebytes it would not update. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it still will not update. I found instructions on updating it manually, but it was still outdated by 10 days, and even though a scan at that point revealed one infection which I removed, it still will not update. I tried copying and pasting the database and rules files from an up to date clean computer's malwarebytes, and a full scan revealed no infections, but it still will not update.

Additionally, I noticed that Windows Firewall is disabled, and all attempts to enable it have yielded an error message. This seems to indicate that this machine has a malware problem :(

I hope I have written this post correctly according to forum specifications, if I have not done so I apologize ahead of time and will modify it as directed. The DDS text is listed below, and the attach.zip and ark.zip are attached as well.

I was running the Win7 preview on my laptop, and when retail came out, I wiped it out and installed the final version. It's running fine, but..

Windows Update is not giving me updates for Security Essentials.

I thought Update was supposed to do that? Am I doing something wrong here, or does 7 final not do that? If that's the case, how do I get it to check for virus scanner updates like it does for Win Defender?

Answer:Security Essentials & Windows Update

MSE updates itself in its CP, Windows Update does not include MSE Definition Updates.

I'm running Windows XP and for some reason my Windows Security Essentials won't update. I keep getting the error message OX80070424. I tried Windows Fix it but it said wasn't able to repair the problem. The error report said: "windows update components must be repaired". I ran Malwarebytes but it came clean. Is this a virus or something else? Thanks!

One disadvantage of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is that it uses Windows Update to update the virus definition files. If you disabled the Windows update for some reasons MSE won?t update anymore.
The MSE Update Utility can be used here to update MSE even if Windows Update is disabled.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Update Utility

Why in the world are you disabling Windows Update? Just set it to "Never check for updates" if you want to manually do it. But disabling Windows Update altogether is just stupid, honestly. Might as well not even run an antivirus if you turn off your first line of defense.

MSE version 4.10.205.0 has fixed my login problems I and others were experiencing with MSE Version 4.9. Seemed to only occur on some installations, such as under Windows Vista.

Make IE your default browser for the update, you won't loose any bookmarks etc. I switch between 3 different browsers and never loose anything.

I'm running Vista 64-Bit, this update got hung up upon reboot and login.

After ten+ mins. & hardly any disk activity, decided to perform a system restore.

Could not find any information about this update, no change-log and no information why the update is "Important".

Microsoft Security Essentials, a core anti-malware service that helps protect consumers against viruses, spyware and other malicious software is one of the best antivirus i have seen in recent times. Its a lightweight, 100% free to every user running genuine Windows. Like every other Antivirus it needs to regulary update its definitions from the internet. But if you are on a PC with limited access or no Access to the internet , here is how you can download the Microsoft Security Essentials virus and spyware definition update file offline :
1. Make note of the Windows operating environment (32-Bit or 64-Bit) you are having.
2. To download the file for a 32-bit (x86-based) version of Windows, click the following link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=87342
To download the file for a 64-bit version of Windows, click the following link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=87341
Just save the file on a USB stick so that you can connect the USB stick to the offline machine and then update MSE.
3. for Windows 7/Vista, right-click on the downloaded file and select Run as administrator. and for XP, simply double-click on the file and click Ok.
4. When the definition update file runs, a file extraction dialog box appears and . After the file extraction dialog box closes,Microsoft Security Essentials? virus and spyware definitions status is Updated.
