Preferred Solution: Win7 Reboot after 1 minute, security centre not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If your notebook model is Win7 supported install missing driver. What other suggestion you want to hear? ;)
Have you tried to use Vista driver?
I have noticed some drivers are missing for Win7. In this case I used Vista drivers and everything worked properly on my Satellite A300.

Have you tried this?

To restore User Account Control settings to recommended levels
1. Open Security Center by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clicking Security Center.

2. Click Other security settings.

3. Under User Account Control, click Turn on now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Hi,
This is posted in another thread so apologies if I am wrong in posting it again seperately.
I loaded my mates XP onto a new hard drive for him but on a different machineand had problems when I put the H/D into his machine.
I have now put the new drive into the correct PC, and repaired windows. A few files couldn't be loaded which I guess is my problem but everything else was ok except I couldn't activate so did that over the phone.
Now I can access the internet no probs but I have no automatic updates in control panel, tho I do have windows update on the start menu. If I click on windows update it just shows that it's trying to open the page but nothing happens... same if I go on the net and go to microsoft.com.
Also there is the security center icon in control panel, but clicking that just brings up a blank page.
And lastly (so far!!) I can't access outlook express.... clicking the shortcut just results in a "beep" then nothing.
Any help in solving this appreciated....
Thx
Kev

Hello,

I have noticed that when I boot my machine it takes longer than usual and my CPU Usage is always 100%. Also my Anti-Virus (re-installed several times) and XP Security Centre have stopped working.

I have used tools such as regcure and super spyware buster to clean what they could but I am still having problems.

What other information do you need from me to help diagnose the problem?

Regards

Lee

Problem 1: XP Home reboots in the 3+ minute range. Once it gets to the 'Starting Windows XP' screen, it loads fine. Some damnthing is hanging.

Problem 2: MY comp is running slow. Expeciially on the net. Task manager is reporting no excess network use. IE 6 acts like it's on a 56k modem. I use Mozilla FireFox, which runs fine, but my wife is a IE 6 fanatic. Shareaza and WinMX load slowly and take a minute or more to change tabs. BitTornado (latest versions all) loads and runs fine, but seems to hang after an hour or so. It stops updating speeds, seeds, peers, etc. It also closes slowly. Once I get online, the comp slams on the brakes. Mozilla is the only app that seems unaffected. Sygate is also logging a lot of portscans. 7 in the in the last hour or so. All from the same IP address. I've tried a reboot to get a new IP adress, but the port scans start up agan after about an hour, last about an hour then stop. So far I've resisted the urge to backrace since it'll only egg the @$$hole on.....though if anyone has an ICBM I could use..........

NOTE I read the rules and I'm not asking for help with my P2P apps. Just mentioning them since they are affected. I installed the other ones since BT was acting flakey... Read more

Hi! Had good results with this forum; back again!Working on my nephew's computer, I noticed Google searches were being redirected. Microsoft didn't catch the initial problem so I ran Malwarebytes and Eset Online scanner which found and clean some problems. Rebooted. Microsoft Security Essentials found Sirefef trojan, cleaned and rebooted. Now every I boot the computer it says it will "restart automatically in one minute" (both safe and normal mode)OS is VistaAV is MSEAdvanced Boot options does NOT give me "Repair you computer" optionI do not have the Windows installation disk, although it might be possible to find with a lot of hunting. Please help!(As an aside, the reason I went to my nephew's computer was to check on the router... On my laptop my Symantec Endpoint Protection was giving me popups that it a "port scan attack is logged" coming from the router. Since it was being blocked I figured I would use the other computer to view router's admin page.)

I have a several month old Dell Dimension 4600 running WinXP Home, with dual monitors, which runs great, I'm happy. If I have to reboot for some reason, everything shuts down fine, but system shows the F2/ F12 screen briefly, then goes to black screen with the underline cursor
for 5 minutes! After 5 minutes, the HD kicks in, XP loads normally and everything runs fine. Scanning through the various BIOS setup items, Fast Boot is on, system is set to boot from C: first, then CD; and there dont seem to be any "weird" or obviously wrong settings of any kind. Any suggestions?
I have also run msconfig and gone though turning off start up programs, etc. but once loading XP begins, everything runs fine, just takes 5 minutes to start...

I have been beating my head against the wall with this one.
Just got a Gateway E-9520T for a customer. We spent the last week configuring it, installing updates, etc--but it's pretty much vanilla Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit with exchange 2003. We haven't installed any of their customer applications yet.

During the setup and testing we did everything from leaving it on at night, to shutting down over night, rebooting, etc...

A few days ago it suddenly started taking around 30 minutes to boot and 30 minutes to shutdown.

During the startup/shutdown the RAID array is going crazy. Tons of file access.
When starting up it performs POST correctly, starts booting Windows (2003 Server Logo, with the little scroll thing at the bottom), and then the screen flashes like it's about to switch to graphical mode. But it hangs there with a blank screen for 30ish minutes.

The morning this started we hadn't installed any new drivers, updates, applications, or anything. Just fired the box up.

Gateway thought it might have been the MegaRAID card, so they sent a new one. No change. MegaRAID says their latest firmware fixes an issue that sounds like this problem. Updated the MegaRAID firmware, and it's still taking forever to boot.

What I've done:
Waited forever for the system to come up, rollback driver updates for the RAID card. (no effect)
Booted off Gateway's recovery CD (at their request) and used it to reinstall the factory default drivers. (no effec... Read more

Just this afternoon, I went to use my PC and got the following error; Windows has experienced a critical error and will restart in 1 minute.

Running Windows 7 64 bit....With automatic updates so it should be the latest version of Windows...

My anti virus (Avira 2012 Internet Suite) pops up and states I have 2 viruses. But before the AV can do anything (delete the files) Windows shuts down....I finally got into Safe Mode and tried running my AV, while it was scanning I then got a BSOD. Had to start all over again; Running MalwareBytes now before trying to do the AV scan, just to see if MalwareBytes catches anything.

I have uninstalled the only application I've installed in 3 months, and problem still persists...

I have a Hijackthis log if it needs to be viewed...Just let me know and I'll upload it.

Answer:Windows has a critical error and will reboot in 1 minute

when you get the 1 minute warning, try typing from the start menu "shutdown -a" or "shutdown /a", and the countdown should go away, and you should be able to remove the viruses.

Be sure to disable your system restore backups (delete them), or the viruses may come back. Re-enable them as soon as you are sure you have gotten rid of the viruses.

I have a lenovo ideapady400 that is now almost 2 months old. Earlier today, I noticed that it did not properly go into hibernate when I shut it. The keyboard was still lit up, with no LCD display (including not if I hit Fn+F2) and with the fan at high rpms. I shut it down by holding the powerbutton, and upon rebooting it, it took over 4 minutes to get back to the desktop. It now requires the 4 minutes every time I restart, and it never goes into hibernate with the lid closed (it must be shut down by the power button).Fearing that the computer may be having a serious issue, I tried to make a backup with Onekey recovery, which failed to write a backup (repeatedly). It returned an error saying it couldn't access the partition. I then uninstalled onekey recovery, downloaded it again from the lenovo website. Now when I run onekey recovery it says my system is not able to write a backup.I am now stuck in a tough spot of not being able to backup my laptop and and not being able to do a recovery without losing everything. On the lenovo support site, when I select startup issues, the feedback it gives me is "Thank you for your question. This is a known problem and a solution is being developed. Please check back for updates."Anyone have any ideas what could be causing the main (shutdown/startup) issue? As the laptop is under warranty, should I just send it back to Lenovo?

Answer:ideapad y400 won't shutdown/4 minute reboot

hi hansweeks,

If you PC came with a HDD+SSD drive, try to boot into the BIOS (by repeatedly pressing F2 on startup) and check if both the HDD and SSD are detected (if you're missing one, that HDD might be faulty and needs to be replaced.

If both HDD's are detected (or if your PC came with only a SATA HDD) try to run an HDD diagnostic. Try HD Tune to run HDD error checking in WIndows or create a bottable HDD diagnostic (see steps below).

1. Download the the UBCD ISO
2. Burn the ISO using imgburn
3. Insert the CD that you just created into the defective computer and reboot
4. Upon reboot, continuously press F12 and boot from the ODD/CD-DVD

To burn the diagnostic software on a flashdrive, follow this guide

Note:
If you find any errors, you will need send the unit to Lenovo for service. Support phone list here.

For data backup, you can copy / paste your files on a USB flashdrive / hard drive or use this software to clone your hard drive.

Hope this helps

came home to see windows telling me it needs to reboot due to a recent update. upon reboot I noticed it was sitting there at the animated windows logo prior to the logon screen. the numlock led on the keyboard was stuck so I reset the computer with no change. I then tried safe mode with also no luck. I reset once more and did some googling for quick solutions and about 5 minutes later the computer goes to the logon screen. this is repeatable. i ran a chkdsk /r /f with no change. im not quite sure what to check from here but something is definitely wrong when I go from a 10 second start time to 5 minutes. any ideas?

Hello and welcome Kevin mate if you can get safe mode which I am assuming of course do a system restore to as far back as you like and then it is just a matter of installing updates until one finds the offender and then you just hide it so it doesn't bother you again. (Right click on it and pick Hide)

If yo are not offered may restore points click on the box for further back ones see pic but I suspect you know about this option

So ever since I upgraded to a GeForce GTX 460, I've been getting these ~1min long freezes every time my PC just finished loading Windows (either after a cold boot or reboot).

What could be causing this?

EDIT: This didn't happen to me with my old Radeon HD 5770.

Answer:Windows freezes for over ~1 minute after each cold boot/reboot

I would suspect a driver issue fist thing. Check here for the July 2010 version: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

hello!I have a problem with sound after a a min or so, the sound on my computer shut off and i have to do a restart to make it come back. it's happened with skype and some adobe program... i have win 7 64 bitplease please help me thank you!

Answer:Win7 x64 Sound shuts off after 1 minute

It may be a setting of the M/B power-saving feature, the C-States. Try disabling the C-State in BIOS, if it is enabled, and also read the M/B manual to see if it has other power-save features.CoolGuy

This is quite possibly the strangest error sequence I've come across in all my years working with computers.

My system has issues. Unfortunately. Possibly more than one. But I do know that for about the last month, up until this morning, any attempt to turn on my system would require the user to boot into Windows, wait ~15 seconds for a hard, BSOD-inducing crash (with MEMORY_MANAGEMENT as the cause a majority of the time), wait for the system to reboot and reach the Windows boot animation, suffer yet another hard, BSOD-inducing crash (with no minidump this time, however, since it hadn't fully loaded Windows yet), and then finally reboot once more, after which the system would seem to function perfectly. My one change this morning? I removed one stick of my RAM.

Now, normally this would seem to be pretty cut and dried, but I had similar problems with this setup earlier in the year. I exchanged my RAM twice, then my motherboard, then my RAM again, which is leading me to believe that it might well be a CPU issue (note that my system is not currently being overclocked). But my Windbg skills aren't what they used to be, and I'm currently running on a spotty 3G internet connection, so my options for diagnosis are a tad limited.

Current system specifics:
i3-530 (stock)
2x2GB OCZ PC3 12800 (OCZ3OB1600LV4GK) Obsidian Series
Gigabyte P55-UD3L
Radeon HD 4850 512MB

Thoughts, O gurus of 7?

Win7 installs fine, then reboots to complete installation but then stops the loading of windows saying there was an unexpected reboot or error and windows installation cannot proceed and to reinstall windows again. This was a clean install of windows and not an upgrade.

I checked the setup error log in Panther and it said there was a [0x060675] error, which i don't know what could cause this.

Setup is

Amd X3 425

Asus M4A77D

WD 320 Gb blue

2 Gb ozc mem

I also have the a setupact log if that will help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought this PC some years ago, My problem is I have tried to re set the system using System reboot/restore, The pc refuses to recognise either the keyboard, mouse, external DVD, mouse or keyboard.. Basically I have tried everything and nothing will work, the screen prompts the use of up/down on the keyboard to select but with nothing working I have no solution! Has anyone had this issue? This happened just as the warranty ran out and was told it may be the mother board, I was also informed by PC World it would cost in excess of £250.... To add to this the on/off button disintigrated and had no luck finding a replacement..... Not a very good advert for Lenovo I have to say.Any advice or solution would be greatly appreciated....

Answer:Lenovo Idea Centre A310, Will not reboot

hi Dombey,

Welcome to the Forums.

Have you attempted to access the BIOS by pressing F1 as soon as the Lenovo splash screen appears? Are all the USB ports non functioning? (there should be 4 ports)

if you're able to get into the BIOS, try to:
1. Press F9 to reload the hardware configuration to defaults
2. Navigate to the Devices Tab > USB Setup and ensure the USB legacy support is enabled then press F10 to save and exit BIOS.

3. If you're not able to access the BIOS, try to clean the USB ports with a can of compressed air and some Qtips. If same problem, you may need to send the unit in for service (some local repair shops do board level soldering to repair broken USB ports).

hi, i've gotta phillips mt1600 running on windows xp media centre 2005 edition and one day i tried to turn my pc on but it got to the point of loading up just before it shows the users and it rebooted, i do not know why? And if left to its own devices would do this all day, i've tried booting from cdrom drive and no joy but i've lost my recovery disk and really in a muddle as i'm basically computer novice any ideas what i can do to fix this i don't care about losing everything i just wanna start from scratch, my friend has windows 7 disk for me to install but i don't know how to remove my windows to be able to install windows 7. Please help!! Thanks guys!

Answer:xp media centre reboot loop nightmare

just keep pressing delete on start up and you will eventually get to bios screen, look for settings for boot order and change to cd first boot device ,,,,, re boot,,, put disc in you are wanting to install from,,,,re boot and it should boot from it,, follow instructios on screen, but if comp has a problem then reinstalling will not actually fix it if hardware issue, dirty fans etc etc

Two Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit computers on the same network, the desktop has a printer shared that the laptop would like to access.

The oddness began after I managed to get the laptop to access the desktop via Start > Run > \\desktop, successfully connected up the printer via filesharing and tested it, but every time I restart the laptop it decides that it can't find the desktop any more.

However, if I do Start > Run \\192.168.0.6 (the IP address of the desktop) from the laptop, it connects successfully every time. I've set things up like that for now, but I can't say I've ever seen an issue like this before.

If I do a name lookup on either machine, it resolves the desktop's IP address correctly, regardless of restarting the laptop. If I do \\192.168.0.6, let that open a connection successfully, then do \\desktop, it works. If I just reboot and do \\desktop, it doesn't.

Ideally I would like it to work via computer names so that the desktop doesn't require a static IP.

Answer:Win7 <-> Win7 file sharing issue after client reboot

These days we use something called User permissions and security settings to establish safe reliable network connections.

You can just right click the folders you want to share and choose the security and permissions settings, they tend to stay put after that. Or you can click on the "share" tabs and go from there. If you are using all Windows 7 machines in this network then setting up a Home group is the way to go.

Has anyone come across the following:
My son's laptop - Dell Inspiron 1545 running Win7 boots normally, but all the icons on the desktop cause Windows media centre to load, eg, Adobe reader has a normal icon, but clicking on it leads to media centre, IE does the same etc.
The scenario is that clicking on an icon loads media centre, click on the X to close, gives a blank screen, and then media centre loads again, clicking to close brings you back to the desktop. Some icons have been replaced with media centre icons and some haven't. The Upshot is, that whatever program is clicked on, media centre runs. I can;t change the program file associations in control panel - tried it and it does not work. media centre seems to be running ok, ie I can play music via it, and all the iTunes info is there, but not iTunes.
If you want any further info, I'll gladly supply it.

Hi to all and sorry for my bad english.

That's my problem: every minute of inactivity on my pc (eg: i'm watching a video) my screen becomes black (like the monitor was automatically turned off) and if i don't do anything like pressing a key or moving the mouse between a sec or two, my pc comes back at the win 7 blu screen where i can choose with wich account i want to log on to my pc.

Btw, this is the screen you reach disconnecting the user: actually, when i reach that screen my account (i'm administrator) results with the status "blocked": clicking on it, i come back to my desktop normally.

Well, i searched for all the optios in the control panel (i've also setted never for turning off the monitor o sleeping the hds - well, how can i explain, with that setting the pc couldn't shut down, never) but i still cannot resolve it. Well, everything works fine, but it's very frustrating seeing even a youtube video or reading something.

Hope i have been clear on my explanation, many thanks for any advices you can suggest to me.

On Tuesday morning around 8:15 I got a little dialog box that stated (as close as I can recall) that Windows had encountered a critical problem and would restart in one minute, and that I should save my work. When I clicked my start button I saw that the restart option was grayed out, so I just had to sit there and wait for the restart to happen. Once it did and the computer was back, everything seemed normal. I looked in the Event Viewer and the nearest thing I could find to a cause was something about lsass.exe having stopped working. Also, later I noticed in the Windows update control panel that Windows Defender had updated itself at 8 AM that morning (at least according to my OS).

Relevant details: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit- I was running Firefox, iTunes and Steam at the time. My antivirus program is avast! free version. Everything is updated. My version of Java was one revision out of date (7 update 4 instead of 5--since fixed). I use FoxIt Reader and not Adobe so that's not a vector. I ran a full Malwarebytes scan and found nothing. Also ran TDSSkiller.exe and found no problems.

There has been no strange behavior since the forced reboot, and there were Windows updates installed yesterday, and everything seems to be behaving properly, but on another forum I frequent someone said this might be a rootkit, so I'm paranoid. Is there something I can do to be sure?

Answer:Win7 "critical error" restarting in 1 minute message--infection?

It looks like ZeroAccess rootkit. Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic. If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. Ok, another Network problem I'm having is that the 9 shares that I have on my Win7 machine are shared among a small network with a couple of Vista machines, 1 Win7 machine and a couple of XP machines and even one Mac. Every once in a while when users on the XP machines try to use the shares, they are prompted with a username and password, and no matter what is entered they are not allowed access, even a good account and password on the Win7 machine. They are told that the shares cannot be found, however they can still ping the Win7 machine, and they previously used the shares for days without problems. A reboot of the XP machine has no effect, however rebooting my Win7 (then manually readding the shares) clears it up. Again, WHY!

This I could see as being a bug, but it's still a pretty big one. Any help would be appreciated!

I've seen this problem on several forum posts in this section and it's happening to me as well! I originally had a redirect virus, which I was able to clean (so I thought). The final step to that process was uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Security Essentials. As soon as I did that, I started receiving the critical error that my computer would shut down in 1 minute. That happened a few times until it would simply not reboot at all. My computer now gets to the Windows loading screen and stalls.

My computer is a Compaq and it is currently running Windows 7. Do I need to start this process with the same Farbar Recovery Scan Tool that has been suggested to others? Also, will I need to have the Windows 7 Installation disk for this process?

Thanks for the help in advance. I'm currently at work and will have to download and print out instructions from here so that I can start this fix later in the day.

HI all, I've had refurbished IBM Thinkpads for the last ten years and, as my Thinkpad 600X began to die a slow death, I felt it was time to seriously upgrade to a Lenovo, so I got myself a T410 and it's a great machine. It's probably more computer than I need, but then I'll probably use it until it disintegrates. The thing is that it came loaded with WinXP, which is fast becoming prehistoric, so I was thinking of loading on the Lenovo Win7 Professional CD that came with it.However, since this will be a clean install, does this mean that I will lose the Thinkvantage Productivity Centre program that came pre-installed with the computer? And if I do lose it, is it available to download free from Lenovo? FULL DISCLOSURE- I'm a Gen X'er and computers really kicked in by the time I was too old to learn new tricks. So, my apologies if this query comes across as a real newb question. Thanks in advance, all.

Answer:ThinkVantage Productivity Centre-Is it pre-loaded on Lenovo Win7 Disk?

what does your win 7 cd say on label? also how many discs are there?

Also, no one is too old for learning, it is a life long process.

Had to get a 'special renamed' version of malwarebytes to get the logs. Even struggled to get this thread going. Have had to type it out three times now!

Anyway, these are the only programs that would work (attachments below) all others wont run! Getting really stressed.

Having real problems, hopefully you can help find the problem.

Many thanks in advance

Question: Security Centre

No, not the Windows one... I got some spyware that used to show porn ads, but I got rid off that, but when I open IE7 (I use it sometimes), it goes to iehomepages.com site (don't go to it, it might screw your pc up ). And a pop up says I have the virus it infected me with, and to press ok, which i never do.

Anyway! How do I make it so it doesn't go to iehomepages (btw, the spyware had a toolbar addition to IE7).... the default homepage is about:blank, so it shouldn't be going there.

Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
HijackThis

I regularly re-format my hard drive and reinstall the operating software - to clear out the dross. I run XP on a Sony VAIO laptop and run AVG anti virus. I have carried out the reformat many times without problems, this time I now get the dreaded "red shield", despite AVG being up to date. MS Security Analyzer also shows the system to be sound, but I want to properly redress the error.I note that there have been emails on this before, but the solution offered is simply to disable the virus notification, which I do not want to do.Does anyone have an up to date fix, that does not involve disabling the notification?

We're Sorry, The Security Centre could not change your Automatic Updates Centre.

This is the error message that I receive. My automatic updates is turned on, but the balloon is red in my icon tray.
Does this mean I am not secured for updates, or should I just ignore it.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Security Centre

Hi! Sometimes this message can appear when the computer has caught a trojan or the like. Have you run your Anti-virus/Anti-malware software on your computer yet? And if it has caught something it is important to REBOOT afterward!

Another thing is the regsvr. file may not be working correctly. The file wuaueng.dll needs to be registered.
Go to ==>Start ==>Run, then type-in: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll and then hit on O.K.

If you have checked for all and everything is clear, then the following may be of some help to you.

On the first day of each month, Windows Action Centre sent me a reminder to back up my Win7 PC.
Is that procedure now unnecessary on my Win10? I no longer get that reminder.

PS I've always backed-up my files etc monthly in addition to the WAC back-up (it was impossible to find individual files etc on that WAC back-up) so the idea that I no longer need to back up regularly fills me with horror!

Answer:Win7 Windows Action Centre monthly reminder to back-up/Not so in Win10

One option many prefer to use would be seeing a full system image back up rather then scheduling partial backups. You can easily use the backup option that comes in Windows or opt for a 3rd party program with many pointing to the free Macrium Reflect. Personally since long before 7 arrived even I never scheduled backups but continually saw manual backups of each individual or group of individual files.

With 10 playing slightly by a new rule book being three versions newer then 7 you have to anticipate that there were a few changes made! The backup options look much the same as to be expected when in the Control Panel while other superficial things may have simply been either eliminated or have a newer approach to get at.

The new Start menu for example lacks the CP link while that is concealed in the right click on Start button dropdown menu there as well as the Command prompt, Command prompt(admin), Run command line previously in the Start menu with 7 now in that right click menu brought in by 8. And at some point some bloggers suggest that MS will be doing away with the Control Panel itself since the emphasis has been on touchscreen for both desktop as well as mobile.

I recently installed McAfee Spamkiller, and also it seems McAfee Security Centre (didn't really want it but hey, it was free). When I installed them I chose the options to only update the apps when I asked them to, and even had to reconfirm this when the apps were installed. However every time I switch on the PC, and then every 10 minutes or so I get the dial-up request to go on-line. When I do go online I use my Firewall to see what is communicating and find it is Mcafee Security Centre.I used the system configuration manager to stop Security centre running at startup, and there was also an entry for MCupdate.exe which I stopped running. This worked for the time the PC was switched on, but next time I booted it started again, and when I went into Sys config manager, another entry had appeard for MCupdate.exe - how can this happening?I have Mcafee Internet Security v5 (incl Viruscan v7 etc.). I run Windows me if that makes any difference. Please can any of you good people give me a clue.

Answer:McAfee Security Centre

Start, Run, type inmsconfigand click OK.On the Startup tab, untick mcupdate.exe then keep clicking OK to exit. Reboot to check that it has worked.Don't untick any other McAfee programs or you won't be protected.

I clicked on a rogue link and got the AVE virus.

I ran the little fix that allows MBAM to work and that got rid of the AVE virus ok but on reboot I was getting the Google redirects which attempted to install AVE again but this time was stopped as I had turned on the AVG link scanner.

I ran GMER which indictated a rootkit present and an altered atapi.sys.

I ran the TDDS killer from kapersky and that seems to have sorted the redirects, however, I have had a couple of total freezes since so I think there may be something still present. I've run full scans of AVG, MBAM and Spybot, Hitman and PrevX and nothing showing.

Would it be advisable to run Combofix?

I have used this a couple of times on other PC's to get rid of similar variants but I am always nervous about running it.

Answer:XP Security Centre + redirect

My redirects came back, it seems something keeps spawning new attacks and disguising them in svchost.exe processes.

I have a laptop with XP sp2 and Norton installed. I seem to have lost the security centre. I can turn it on manually and change it to automatic but when I reboot, it disappears again. I have a desktop with mcafee installed, which is the only difference, and I have no problem there. Is this an issue with Norton, and do I need it anyway. Is Norton taking over the function.

Answer:Security Centre Query

If you have Norton Internet Security it will disable Windows Security (or at least, strongly recommend that option during installation). There's probably an option to change back again somewhere amongst the options.

Hi there,I got infected last week with the XP Security centre virus and a Norton scan removed a couple of trojans. I also ran SpyBot and Adaware but my browser was still being redirected. After seeing some good reviews I downloaded and ran Hitman Pro 3.5 which found trojans in four different places, all hidden in a file "SIQSRX.DLL". Hitman said they had been removed but it looks like it just flushed them out from hiding as Norton then detected and quarantined it as Trojan.Gen.The redirection has now stopped BUT there is a red error at startup, in four directories:-"SIQSRX.DLL is not a valid windows image. Please check against your installation diskette."I am somewhat reluctant to reboot the PC again as it is now working OK!Just now, Norton has found two more trojans (trojan.gen) lurking in the system volume information folder and then Hitman Pro then found two more hidden in the same SIQSRX.DLL files as yesterdays:- "C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Application Data\Windows Server\siqsrx.dll" "C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\Windows Server\siqsrx.dll" Can anyone tell me if switching off system restore is likely to stop it popping up again and whether Hitman Pro is a reputable malware/spyware remover? Many thanks

Answer:XP Security centre virus

Download Superantispyware , and if possible , update it ( you may find that initially you can't ) Run it , and give it time to do a full scan , it should find everything pertaining to your problem , then get it to delete whatever it finds . Turn off system restore before running the program . Ashley

I had a old computer given to me, (and I mean old, fixed it up just to do email and do letters etc, doubt it would cope with anything else) anyway I got it going and managed to load the OS on to it, (XP Pro) checked and all drivers where present so XP Pro had all the drivers (shows how old the mother board is) anyway before installing service packs etc I went to turn some bells and whistles off and configure settings as I like them.

(This computer has not yet been connected to the Internet, I have not even put an Ethernet cord into it yet, so not a virus)

I go into the Control Panel and there is no security centre icon there, this is the first time I have come across this.

I have searched the net but only articles or forum entries I have come across have been for if malware or other nasties had been removed and then noticed the icon missing, so this does not apply to me as its a fresh install, and this computer has not been connected yet.

Ideas running through my head is maybe updating drivers, or something to do with the bios, going to check the hard drive itself tomorrow, a bit hesitant to try things unless I know its going to help other than this everything seems to be opening and closing as per usual.

It just amazes me with all the installs I have done (in the hundreds +) and this is the first time I have had this happen

Any ideas will be much appreciated, oh and have not loaded anything else on yet, its just the basic OS, decided not to go any further with insta... Read more

Answer:Security Centre too secure!

It sounds like some files have been deleted/overwritten. I have had a similar problem and had to uninstall the service pack 2 and then reinstall it. You may have some sort of virus that has damaged this "add-on", so you might need to do a full system scan as well.

This may be of interest to Spybot users.Having downloaded the latest Spybot updates yesterday I then ran a scan and it again found 'Windows Security Centre AntiVirusDisableNotify'.I've ignored this in the past but this time decided to let Spybot remove it.This morning, whilst off-line, I had a reason to disable my AV software. As soon as I disabled it I got a Security Centre pop-up in the Task Bar:"Your computer might be at risk. Norton Anti-Virus is turned off!"I use XP and I've had Security Centre on my PC since I installed SP2 12 months ago and I've NEVER had this pop-up before.OK, it's a useful message. But although I regularly disable my AV when PC housekeeping, why have I only received it now for the first time? Was it related to the 'bug' which Spybot found and removed?I post this for the information of other Forum members rather than expecting an explanation. ;-)

i have a problem with my laptop which i have no idea how to fix. it was working fine, now it barely works. norton finds no problems yet windows security centre insists i have no security. it also says i have 49 viruses, i dont entirely believe it though, there are crude spelling mistakes and it seems to know a lot more about each virus than other virus prevention software generaly does. it looks like it is trying to scare me into paying the $70 it claims are required to get new antivirus software (also it provides no phone number or web adress.)the final unusual thing is it has removed everything from my desktop & when i open internet from windows bar it is slow and opens random pages. i was hoping someone may have a clue as to what this is all about? its saying things like "trojan downloader.agent.osq attqcking your computer, block?" yes. I need help...

I realised a few days ago that my windows security centre is malfunctioning.
Ok:
Well, i used to have norton 360, which includes its own firewall rite?
So i uninstalled Norton 360 , now whenever i go back into Securtiy Centre, under the firewall tab it says Norton 360 is "still" monitoring my computer!!

That makes it extremely bad for me because now i dont no if my computer is actually being protected or not!

It also (under the Anti-Virus tab) says i have more than 1 anti-virus progam, All i've got is AVG. I also did a Windows search for the keywords "norton 360" but nothing came up!

Plz help me!!!

Hi, my friend just got a new laptop, and a program I never knew existed was pre-installed. Norton Security Centre. It reports on the security status of the PC. I decided I'd like it on my PC. I decided that it looked like it should be freeware. But being Norton, I wasn't sure. I've looked on the Symantec site but can't find it anywhere, free or not. I broadened my search to the 'WWW' but still can't find it. Anyone help?

Answer:Norton Security Centre

Are you sure you?ve got the name correct? There?s McAfee Security Centre and there?s Norton Internet Security. Both of these are combined AV, firewall, anti-spam and privacy packages and both of them have to be paid for.As far as I know there?s no such beast as Norton Security Centre.

Hey !!

well, my "friend" was supposed to help me reinstall Windows XP on my Patriot Laptop, we managed to do this...HOWEVER...upon looking at my laptop (after reinstalling), I noticed that my Windows XP security centre was no longer there, is there any way I can get it back as I would at least feel safer with it back on my screen. I am protected by Norton etc but still need and want my Windows XP security centre, I think he unlocked my PC security, does this mean my laptop is now useless, or is there someone out there that can help me get it back somehow, PLEASE HELP ME, I'M GOING INSANE

Answer:Windows XP Security Centre

Have you installed SP2 yet? Windows Security Center is a component of that. You also need to visit Windows Update.

every time I boot up I get a balloon pop up by the task bar telling me that my pc is at risk because my antivirus is turned off and I should click on a little red shield in thetask bar to correct it. I do so and check in the Security Centre and I find it is turned on but I can find no means of keeping this turned on permanently, as it always has been. I have run scans to see if there are any nasties causing this to happen but the come up clear. How can I stop this turning off each time I shut down? Please!!

Answer:Problem with security centre

Hi, my Samsung x125 notebook came pre-loaded with a 6 month trial version of McAfee Security Centre. Now the 6 months are up, I wish to delete the McAfee program and install another anti virus program, however, everytime I try to uninstall the McAfee program, the computer hangs-up and I have to re-boot. I tried installing the free version of AVG anti virus program but the computer ran very slow. Any ideas of how to uninstall the McAfee Secuirty Centre would be helpful.

I don't know why but security centre is not on my computer.

I have tried accessing it through the control panel (no icon)
I have tried searching for it in the start menu (no results)
I have gone to Start Menu > Accessories > System Tools (not there)

How can I get it back?

I am running sfc /scannow at the moment to see if I can get it back through that.

Answer:Security Centre is Missing

Hi, please go to start search and type:- cmd, right click on the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the prompt type:- (probably easier to copy paste)

Code:
net start> 0 & notepad 0
press enter

Post the notepad outcome here.

Next still in cmd type:-

Code:
reg query "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc"> 1 & notepad 1
press enter, post the notepad outcome here.
