ACCES TO PROGRAM DENIED OR PROGRAM KILLED ON ATTEMPTING TO START

Question: ACCES TO PROGRAM DENIED OR PROGRAM KILLED ON ATTEMPTING TO START

As per BOOPME directions this new thread has been started. From original thread here - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1967273.The Computer is a Dell Lattitude 620 with windows XP SP-3The issues are that the computer will not allow many programs to run "access is denied errors" or simply the program is killed when the icon is clicked on. This started when fraudware was present. I had removed the fraudware by removing the drive and attaching it to another win XP machine and running Microsoft security essentials, MBAM, Spybot S&D and Trend micro housecall scanner. I have followed the directions for steps 6-9 from "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help, Instructions for receiving help in cleaning your computer". I had created another user with Aministrators rights to run this. Of note to sign off after creating the new user I had a message box for the MCI Command Handling Window - "Could not Close" error message hung on close.Step 6 - Disable your CD Emulation Software - goodStep 7 - Download and Run DDS which will create a log of programs running on your computer. Done created log files Step 8 - Create a GMER Log - downloaded and when clicked to run GMER is killed immeadiately. it will not run.Just a little more information about above XP Pro, The directions were followed after creating a new user with admin privilages. still waiting to hear anything.EDIT: Posts merged ~BP

Preferred Solution: ACCES TO PROGRAM DENIED OR PROGRAM KILLED ON ATTEMPTING TO START

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: ACCES TO PROGRAM DENIED OR PROGRAM KILLED ON ATTEMPTING TO START

You may close this thread as I have gone to the extreme step of backing up data & then doing a reformat & install.

Hello
I can`t get acces to some folders of skyrim in my program files. I just bought this computer and it worked fine yesterday. I always get an error with acces denied by system and already tried to give myself rights through the security tab, but unfortunately I don`t even have rights for that.

Anyone got some possible solutions that might help?

program unable to start access denied in win 7 . the program im trying to open is itunes.. i read a post on here about a simular situation and someone who helped figure out the solution suggested to download DDS and post the log for him to read it and figure out the exact problem. but the post is to old i cannot reply to it with my log and was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out with this and read my log to tell me exactly whats making it to where i cant open itunes.

Answer:program unable to start access denied in win 7

Try something easier. uninstall itunes and downloading a fresh copy and reinstalling it from the new download. This will fix any problems you may have with the program itself. If you have trouble reinstalling or still have issues, run Malwarebytes to make sure you do not have an infection that slipped by your antivirus program that is causing the problem. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hey Everyone,

I've been an IT student for a while now and there's this one problem neither me, or any professor at my institute can solve.
School's provided me with 5 free licenses for the entire microsoft office pack and I tried installing it recently. But whenever I start up Excel, Word, OneNote or anything part of the office pack it displays the error message: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office\EXCEL.EXE        Attempting to acces invalid address" (in excel's case, when trying to start up Word EXCEL.EXE is replaced by WORD.EXE and so forth). I've been told that this may have something to do with the fact that this computer once had the office pack installed but it was uninstalled after that. I've been searching all over the internet and couldn't find an answer. So I hope you people can help me. Thanks in advance.

I'm new to the site by the way.

Answer:Excel fails to start. 'Attempting to acces invalid Address'

First thing I would do...uninstall Office, then reinstall.

Answer:setting program acces and defaults

Hi duduc

Note the file extension that Quick Time wants to play.

Disable that File Type from associating with Quick Time:

Associate that File Type with Windows Media Player:

Hello,

I recently discovered this website while searching for spyware information. Looks like a great site with very good tutorials. I am a computer novice, maybe a tad more advanced than a beginner, so bear with me if this question seems odd, but....

I was recently downloading Avast anti virus software. When the dialogue box appeared to ask what I wanted to do, either run or save the file, I clicked save, then tried to navigate to program files folder, but I got a window that said I do not have access to this folder! It's an HP Pavillion, Vista Home Premium, and I am logged in as the administrator of the computer. There are 3 other account users settings on it as well for my wife and kids, but they are not administartors, just normal password protected users. My question is, why was I denied access to the program files section, or folder, if I am the administrator?

My gut feeling is that it's some type of security setting in Vista (now there's a surprise!), but if anyone has some input I would appreciate it. Many thanks, and look forward to browsing this site many times in the future.

Answer:Program Files Acces In Vista

My gut feeling is that it's some type of security setting in VistaYes, you're correct.Have you seen this?In previous versions of Windows, many users used the built-in Administrator account on a regular basis. This account has full control over everything on the computer. When you install Vista, you may be surprised to learn that the Administrator account is disabled by default. That's to encourage you to follow best practices and create your own administrative account. It also makes it a little harder for hackers; they all knew that the account named Administrator existed and so had half of what they needed (the account name) to log on with it.You can enable the built-in Administrator account if you really want to, by running the Command Prompt as administrator (right click its icon and select Run as Administrator; click Continue at the UAC prompt) and typing the following:net user administrator /active:yesThis causes the Administrator account to appear on the Welcome screen. ***Note that it does not have a password set by default; the first thing you should do is set a strong password for it.

Hello diintzke,

Welcome to the forum.

Please copy and paste the logs instead of attaching it unless otherwise requested.

You have a dual boot system and FRST has scanned the Windows XP. Are you technical enough to remove the HD with Windows XP and run the FRST again or we should use another method to scan the system and recover it?

Good Afternoon,

I have another student computer displaying the above stop code. The computer had been booting fine until the last restart I did now it will not boot to the desktop just to the blue screen with the above stop code. It had been infected by a virus that displayed multiple fake systems messages but I thought I had got rid of everything by using MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials. This student had been running without virus protection for who knows how long.

FRST log is attached

Hello,

One of the computers in my office came up with this error when turned on this morning:

STOP: C0000135 The program can?t start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program

It took me a while to get to the error, because, as the computer's running Win 7 Pro, it was skipping the BSOD, and going straight to startup repair; when that didn't work, I then disabled the automatic restart option, and then found this error, which I've never seen before. I did do some googling, and found several references to this being either virus or corrupt registry entries, but I wanted to check in here first before I started doing anything to the computer.

Could somebody please steer me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

--Jon

Answer:STOP: C0000135 The program canít start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program

I've seen a couple of references to the registry entry as described in this article, but I went in and looked, and do not see the bad entry for "consrv":

I also searched the drive for any references of consrv.* and found nothing...

Hi, I am running Windows 7 x64 on an ASUS g73 laptop and recently got hit with this error. The computer would startup only to hit this blue screen and restart. It would also not boot in any of the safe modes. I have read that it probably has to do with a malware infected .dll file but have no idea how I would go about fixing it.

Here is the log I got from frst, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,

I work as a computer technician at a small private college on the Eastern shore of Maryland. I am mainly a Macintosh technician but I am trying to boost my skills with Windows more. With all that said, I had a student drop off a computer to our help desk running Windows 7 with the error of "STOP: C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program". I initially removed the hard drive and connected to one of our other Windows machines and scanned it externally using MalwareBytes and MSE. There were a number of infected items that both programs removed. I then reinstalled the hard drive and got the stop error again. After some Googling and seeing recommendations about AVG I check the Program Files via Command Prompt in the Recovery Console and AVG is not present.

I have used my box of tricks and need more help. If someone could help that would be great.

Matt

Hi, I'm new here and excited to see if I can receive any help.

So my friends computer was working just fine until last night. We moved the computer and then got the error log every time we start it up. From what I've been reading our problem could be exactly this guys problem

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic444580.html

We've done the regedit method to see if anything was wrong or different, but nothing was. So I can assume it's that consrv.dll file thing that's the issue. from what I've read in that post, we need a log thing, so I've already gone ahead and used the repair program and got the dds log

Hello,

Yesterday evening, while administering my Minecraft server, a message saying my Adobe Calson Pro font (the first one in my Fonts folder) was corrupted appeared in the notification area. That was the first message of this type that I had ever seen. A second message appeared after a few seconds, saying another file was corrupted (I think it was a system file, but I don't remember). I ignored the messages and opened a file with Notedpad++ but it failed to launch. I decided to restart my computer but Windows 7 failed to boot with a BSOD : "STOP: C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program". Before searching this issue on Google, I ran a CHKDSK which completed whitout erros. Then I foud these two topics which present a similar issue : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic444580.html and http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic455797.html. I followed the procedure mentioned in the first topic and got the following log :

I installed Weathrbug Plus and for some odd reason recently when I run it Windows runs the installation for the program. When I run the prograsm I get the typical "Preparing to install..." abnd then tyhe 'Configuring Weatherbug. I've been in contact with Weatherbug Support all day and we can't seem to find an answer.
I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials.
This is a clean install of Windows 7. I haven't used any other real-time security software other than MSE.
I disabled MSE and tried it and got the same results.

Any help will be appreciated.

Sorry but defeat has been swallowed. after a month of DIY, I must ask the experts

Problem
3 minutes to open up a program at start up, however as i run programs the computer gets faster. Analysing programs such as anti virus and spyware really help speed it up. But restart or go to another user and it slows again to a stop.
Tried deleteing programs which may conflict with my SP2 upgrade, such as Norton anti virus and windows firewalls, no difference.
I have tried Stinger anti virus, Ad adware personal and Spyhunter. all found and solved problems but not my major speed problem.

My CPU is always 100% with cpuidle.exe normally 98% of this.

I used an uninstaller to remove some files as the left over bits were slowing my computer down, the uninstaller was called REVO Uninstaller, but i unknowingly deleted something important for the start menu it appears because the start menu no longer displays the system files and folders and programs i installed.
http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/y...Untitled-1.jpg

So now, every program i had is still there, but i can't access it from the start menu, i have to go into my computer, then find the programs company name, then access it. I tried creating a new account but it has also affected that one so i am stumped as to what happened. I can ordinarily solve most of my computer's problems, but this one i cant seem to fix.

Answer:I uninstalled a program and now i can't see all my program files in the start menu, h

It looks like you are running in Classic Mode? Right click the Start button/Properties and choose Start Menu. instead of Classic Start Menu. You may be using a Default profile.
Go to C:\Users open up your original User Profile name. Copy the Start Menu, Desktop, Favorites, Music, Pictures etc and paste them into the new profile name you are using to log into.

Hi,

Tried to boot my computer this morning and was greeted with "C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program" message. I've been scouring the web in search of a solution but can't find anything helpful apart from other similar threads on here. I've scanned with frst64.exe and got the log. I'm hoping someone can help me solve this as I have a lot of college work saved that would like to have a copy of. If I can't fix this I guess I could try boot Linux off of a USB to try rescue some files. Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

I tried to kill the Trojan virus with the anti-virus software by Tencent yesterday, but I fail to log in my Windows 7 (64bit) after restart even in safe mode. There is error with "STOP: C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program". I never used AVG and searched solution from internet to change "consrv" to "winsrv" in the registry, but this does not work.

That why I seek help here and I have scaned my log with "FRST64.exe" as below. Could someone help to provide the solution to fix the error. Thanks for your great help in advance.

Hello. I have been trying how to figure this out for hours and have tried so many things and can't get booted in to windows. I keep getting that BSOD error every time I reboot the computer. So, I saw this web site as I scoured the internet and thought I'd see if you could help me out. I am running Windows 7 x64 and I did have a virus on the computer and used a program called Hitman Pro to remove it and it said it did, but I reboot and I get that BSOD error. Thank you.

Okay, my two concerns are listed below, but first just a thought: I am trying to find out if there is any way possible to run System Restore without using Control Panel? If so, that may be able to fix this whole dilemma easily. well, here's my information as well....    * What operating system are you using?Windows XP    * If you're getting an error what is the error message? When clicking on an icon in Control Panel:C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exeApplication not foundWhen attempting to run a program:(not an error message) but I get the screen that comes up asking me what program I want to run it with. and I dont understand it, because this started happening while my pc was still running, not when I first started it up....    * Basic details on your computer, manufacturer (Dell, HP, custom built), how much RAM, CPU (Intel/AMD), etc.manufacturer: CompaqRAM: I cant find out, because one of my problems is that nothing in Control Panel works when I click on it!CPU: I really don't remember, and again I can't look to find out, but I'm almost certain that its AMD.    * When did the issue start occurring? Did you recently install a program, new hardware device, or visit a web page?It started occurring today, after installing PC Tools anti virus: http://www.pctools.com/anti-virus/ which I found 4 viruses with, but then uninstalled to see if that fixed this problem (fortunately you dont have to rely only on Add/Remove Pr... So if you have your o/s disc you could try this. go to start>run and type the following command (NOTE: You must leave a space after sfc or it will not work):sfc /scannowClick ok and a progress bar will pop up. Let it run to completion and don't do anything else on the computer while it's running. Then reboot and see how things are running.this should repair lost system files on your o/s and it did wonders on my system... I actually got my restore back after running this!!!this is just a thought to try... It helped me!!  would welcome any feedback from other forum members!!!  Hope it helps!!!

I work supporting a large healthcare company that has employees in the office and that work from home over VPN. Recently, a network printer they used at the office died and needed to be replaced. The printer was an older model HP that was replaced with a newer model HP. This printer is dedicated to several work From Home employees who need to print documents to the office for the purpose of them being mailed.

We have one end user, who at times can print intermittently. The times when it doesn't want to print, her process is as follows, she opens the document, selects print, the printer dialog box opens for selecting the printer she wants and she selects okay and it freezes. This printer is selected as her default printer.

What has been done so far is,
1. We've tried selecting a local default printer.
2. We've removed the driver and the device and reinstalled it.
3. We've repaired/removed/reinstalled Office.
4. We've rebuilt her profile on her computer.
5. Finally we have attempted replacing her computer as well with a fresh windows 7 image.

After each one of these tasks we've done, it works for a few print jobs, but then returns to doing exactly what is was doing before? We've ruled out everything that comes to mind and what I have researched so far. Can anyone tell me of something we might be missing???

Answer:When attempting to print, program freezes...

That most certainly sucks, has it been determined if it has to do with there network and not an in-house issue? Have you tried to recreate the issue on say if her computer is on a tethered phone network instead of her home internet?

These programs found and deleted smitfraud-c, Win.32agent, Trojan.fakealert, trojan.alert, malware.trace, trojan.ircbot, among others.Everything seemed to work fine, until while running Firefox, this message appeared:C:\...\bin\jqsnotify.exeWindows cannot access the specified device, path, file...As well as when I run AutoCAD from a file icon:C:\...\AutoCAD 2008\acad.exeWindows cannot access the specified device, path, file...I have tried re-instaling Firefox, Java and Autocad, but the messages are still showing. In the case of Firefox, everytime a window opens (even pop-ups), in the case of AutoCAD only when I try to run the program by double-clicking an icon. When I click START > PROGRAMS, I used to have 30 to 40 folders and programs.  Now, for some reason, I only have eight.  Yet, all the programs are still useable, I just have to set up shortcuts on my desktop, or go to Program Files and find the desired .exe file.I've also noticed that when I go to Control Panel and select Administrative Tools, the Administrative Tool window pops up, but there is not there.  I think the problems are related.

Hello everyone,

I am currently trying to make a program start when another one opens. I don't want to have to use batch scripts since I have a few programs I would need to do this for and a batch script would make them not open correctly. I started to use task scheduler but I cant find what event ID I need to use. It would also be nice if the program ended when the first program shuts down. Any help would be great!

Problem: I am still getting websearch redirects and multiple program blocks (in particular I don't seem to be able to run anything out of Control Panel).
Also after a while I get random system hang.

Scenario: Yesterday I quickly realised I had become infected with MS Antivirus, and took steps to kill it. Not knowing exactly what to do, I tried to install Malwarebytes but found the program hung on each install. So instead I bought the full version of Spyware Doctor - ran it, and supposedly killed off MS Antivirus and about a billion other things.
However it appears that only solved half the problem, as while the popup program is no more, there seem to be plenty of other problems still there, as I mentioned.
In particular each time I reboot and run Spyware Doctor it tells me it is blocking a TDSS rootkit (I think that's right) and a few instances of a Trojan called FakeAlert.

Mea culpa: In 26 years of using computers this is the first time I've ever been stupid enough to get really infected. I feel absolutely ridiculous. Thanks to all you fabulous community-minded people on this great website for any help you can provide.

*I am at work right now but should be home at about 1pm GMT/8am EST to work on fixing this madness.*

I was trying to test my USB ports to determine if any were the 2.0 variety. (Later I learned that you can just look in the System->Hardware tab of the Control Panel and if the port uses the word "Enhanced" then it is a 2.0 port.) I'm running a 2 year old Dell Optiplex 780 with WinXP.
Anyways I downloaded a test program called USB20CV from http://www.usb.org/developers/tools/ and ran it. It promptly locked up my computer and killed every port that had something connected to it. I don't know if there is permanent damage to the ports or just some kind of software shutdown. Luckily I had 4 unused ports so that I could still plug in the keyboard and mouse and still make the computer function. In the control panel, the ports show up as "Functioning properly" (but everyone knows that function lies). I tried powering down the computer and restarting. Tried searching the Internet and this forum for clues. Only one thing found. Be aware that I desperately need the only 4 ports I have left or I can't operate the computer so any solution that shuts down all the ports won't work.
Here is what the site says about this program:
"USB20CV revision 1.4.6.0 is the official test tool for device framework testing. As of April 2007, the mass storage class tests and the video class tests are official and mandatory. This software is provided courtesy of Intel Corporation."

Any ideas welcomed.

I'm having an issue with using the error checking process with Windows XP Home edition.
The issue is this: When I go to "My Computer" clicking on asking it to run the error checking program - it then asks if I want the error checking program to run the next time that the OS starts. I click on yes and then proceed to restart the machine.
What I encounter next is VERY disturbing. When the machine attempts to restart I get a blank screen that provides no information as to why it is blank - nothing. (long story longer, I'm very disturbed about this situation.) Acting as if it has not found the root directory to boot my XP program.
When I attempt to go to the Safe Mode - it will not load the necessary drivers.
When I click on 'Return to most recent working configuration' it is a coin toss if this resolves the situation of the computer successfully booting. However once the machine decides to successfully reboot (using the Return to most recent working configuration' it then will continue to properly reboot (warm boot up, cold boot.) untill i decide I'm ready once again to attempt a error checking fiasco!
Which once again starts the same as it initially did not start. Last piece of the puzzle for one to consider that has more computer savvy than myself is that prior to this occurrence I used a program call 'Ultra Defrag" I'm hoping this is not the cause for the issue but can't think of anything else that may h... More info on Xp SFC /ScanNow: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Re:Vista

Some info HERE

Verify the Integrity of Windows Vista System Files

Run SFC /ScanNow

Have an administrator command prompt open (by right clicking on Command Prompt, and running as Administrator)

Type: sfc /ScanNow on the command line, then press ENTER

You may need your Vista Disc during the process
It is also stated to disconnect Internet, and temporarily turn off Antivirus and any 3rd party Firewalls, during the scan.

Note: No user data will be hurt during the scan, but it is always recommended to have backups completed

By the way, Please put your Operating System version in your Profile (instead of the message, as you have done)

I am attempting for the first time to create a recovery media using a 32g stick drive.  When I reach the stage where the program asks if I understand I can do this once, and I acknowledge that, the program crashes and closes down.  Help?

Answer:Attempting to create recovery media and program crashes

LawDown I personally do not use OEM-provided recovery functions, as I have found third-party tools to be much more reliable and flexible. Personally, I strongly recommend considering Macrium Reflect as I have used it for years and never had it fail me once. Macrium Reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspxWhat I recommend is the following:1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CDMy experience is that MR, when using the High Compression option, typically can compress the saved image file to about 50% of the USED space in the OS partition. This means if you have an 80GB OS partition, and 40GB is used, MR only needs about 20GB to store the image file.I use this all the time and it typically takes less than 10 minutes to do the image backup and about the same time or less to do a restore.Plus, MR has the option to Add a Recovery Boot Menu entry. This allows you then to boot into WinRE, and you can then use that to do a restore -- when you can't boot into Windows!NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive or USB stick in only a few minutes.Good Luck

Hello everybody
I need, as an administrator, to let the users run a program at logon which remaps some keyboard keys, in order to better use a particular measurement application. In particular I need to disable the print screen, because the application visualizes confidential data.
I also need, for security reasons, to disallow the user to remap the keyboard and to kill the program.
Does anybody have any idea on how to do that?
Thanks for your reply
cheers

Answer:Question Running a program that can't be killed by a normal user

Did you consider that the user could use any old snipping program (and there are many on the web) to copy your confidential materials. If the users can install programs, that's what they just might do.

Hi,
I've been having serious problems regarding computer security recently as drug syndicates have gained access to my computer. Symantec Security check persistently reveals open ports although i've installed their personal firewall. At present I get an alert warning me that an unrecognised program is trying to connect to the internet using different programs, such as Internet Explorer or Java. The firewall suggests "block", but when I block, I don't get any connection to the net or site at all. When I say "permit" I get a further messages from the firewall saying that unrecognised modules are being used to connect. In one instance the unrecognised program was identified by the firewall as iexplore.exe (in Program Folder), but when I blocked it, the internet access was gone.
Are theses alerts a sign that something is wrong? When I did Symantec Antivirus download recently, there was a re-direct update included, which I downloaded as well. Since then I have been having problems. I looked through the list of internet enabled programs on my firewall and found that one of the Symantec update programs listed did not have a digital signature, no autoconfiguration data and was not identified as a Symantec program, although all the others were. I blocked this program from accessing the internet in the meantime.
Does anyone have similar problems? What assessment can experts give?
Regards,
Brigitte

If the password was left blank, then you don't have to enter any password when you try to log as the administrator. Just select the administrator account (or type "administrator" as the user name, depending on the way you log on) and press ok.

If there's a password, then ask the person who installed XP on that computer about it.

Retry to install your program when logged as an admin and tell us what happens.

I am having problems accessing the program files directory on an Emachines PC running XP Home..

The pc has been infected with spyware and I have clean some of it..

I have ran super antispyware and it did not find anything, but as it ran I was getting McCafee warnings of spyware and trojans..

I am also unable to open McCafee antivirus, the prgram files directory, and install Spybot..

I ran Hijack this and removed some items, but still no help..

I ran VUNDOFIX and it did not find anything, but McCafee did while it was running..

This is very strange and I am wondering if there are any known trojans/spyware that could cause this..

I am going to try combofix next...

My other computer is a hp using windows xp. The computer lost power and now program files will let me access any file in that folder, either through explorer or through any program that is in that folder. The computer is not connected to the internet and never has been. The computer is only used for backup of photos and backup files. Virus scan comes up with nothing. I tried the whole folder options thing.. no luck. When you check the properties of that folder, there nothing showing. Shows 0 mb in folder. Any ideas besides a complete format and reinstall.

Answer:Program Files access is denied

Try taking ownership of the folder.

To get the Security tab to appear, reboot into Safe Mode.

If no luck, try Unlocker.

I had a trojan hit my computer that mcafee seemed to catch, but also seemed to be caught in an endless loop of quarantine. system was running exceptionally slow with the CPU running at 100% non-stop.

I performed a system recovery, and this seems to have resolved the issue with one snag. I can no longer get access to my c:\program files directory.

I am posting in the malware area, as this was the cause of the initial issue.

I've run the various programs as outlined in the "Read Me First" area. I have attached the various logs. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Access Denied - c:\program files

here's the last log... Also, my computer seems to be running normally (post recovery), with the exception of not being able to access the c:\program files directory.

Thanks.

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hey guys, I really need some help with this. For some reason I cannot do anything in my Program Files for one of my hard drives. My C drive seems to be fine, as well as my 2 other drives. But in my F drive, Ive broken down the program files into a normal one and x86 one. I can basically access every other folder expect the Program Files in F drive. Program Files (x86) in the same drive works perfectly fine. Everytime i try to add a new folder or delete anything in my Program Files folder it says destination folder access denied and i need permission.

Ive tried fiddling with all the UAC and permissions but nothing seems to work.I even tried the command prompt :
"4. To Take Ownership of a Folder or Drive in a Command Prompt
NOTE: This command will take ownership of the folder or drive, and all files and subfolders in the folder or drive."

method but it says Access is Denied in my command prompt.
I will really appreciate any assistance as this is really starting to annoy me. I am also not very proficient with this matters so please bare with me. Thanks in advance

Answer:Access is denied in Program Files

Are these programs that you deliberately installed to that drive, or does the drive have it's own OS on it? If it does, you may not be able to get to it. If you right click on it and go to Security Options, it will show a user which is a string of numbers. You have to remove that user, and set the Owner to Administrators. Sometimes you can't get rid of that "numbered" user.

Did you use an Admin Command Prompt?

I am working on a user's computer that has XP Pro SP2 installed, and I'm trying to install Adobe Acrobat Standard. I log in under the computer's Administrator account and try to install the program and I get the message: "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."
I have removed all other versions of Adobe Acrobat, ran anti-virus scans, and anti-spyware scans. I have tried just about everything I can think of and I'm running out of options. I have checked elsewhere on the internet and tried various registry edits, but they didn't work either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On my home LAN, I have updated one of the PCs to Win XP Pro. It's an upgrade from Win 2000 and the file system is NTFS. The otehr PCs are a combo of Win XP and Win98.

When I try to access this PC over the network I can not access the Program Files folder on the C drive (I get an access denied msg).

I (think) have set all the Sharing and Security settings correctly - I am NOT using Simple Fle Sharing. If I set the permissions for one of the sub-folders (eg. Photos) within the Prog Files directory I can directly access those files.

If I map a network drive to the C drive as "C$", and then look at that over the LAN, I can log in as the Administrator (with p/w) and then I can access all of the folders (including Prog Files) without restriction.

I got to thinking that maybe some of the folders/files within the Prog Files directories had 'inherited' some restricted permissions so I also tried to take ownership of all the files in Prog Files - but that didn't seem to help...

Therefore why can't I access the Prog Files folder without using C$, even if I've set all the sharing and security settings properly?

Hi,

I have been a lurker of this forum for a while, but have now encountered an issue, so I decided to sign up for an account and ask.

I have an issue regarding permissions somewhere, but I never really encounter the issue until it comes to installing programs. I've had the issue for around 2 months but finally it has started to be a real issue. The only solution I've found is to enable the by-default disabled Administrator account and install them there, and this is successful most the time, however sometimes I require program installations on my main user(which is also administrator, but stuff doesn't work for whatever reason).

My setup is slightly different in the way that I have an SSD for Windows, and a 2TB data drive for programs, games and documents etc.

I do not believe malware is the issue.

My most recent encounter of the issue can be seen on the Games for Windows installation: http://i.imgur.com/QM2P0PE.png - This has prevented a game from running, and installing from the Administrator account doesn't allow the program to start on my main user account because "some windows components are missing or disabled" - I also couldn't fix that problem as a workaround. The program ran fine on the Administrator account.

If anymore information is required, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

This entire morning thus far I've been attempting to delete files from Norton Internet Security, which has been inactive for a long time (we are not going to renew our account) and has been bugging us constantly. I assumed it would be an easy task, and I couldn't have been farther from the truth.

I went into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\ where the data for the program is found, and I couldn't delete the files. A dialogue saying
"You need permission to perform this action
You require permission from administrators to make changes to this folder"
I thought it weird, since I am one of the computer's administrators. Next, I logged on to my dad's profile (at his insistence, though there shouldn't be any difference in the administrator powers of our profiles). The same result followed.

Next, I looked online in a Google search and found this site, which told me to use the command prompt to first give me the ownership of the files, then give me complete permissions to the files, and then delete them. All three of these actions failed. The command prompt said "Access denied".

I tried a couple other command prompt actions, and all failed. I'm at a loss for what I'm supposed to do, or what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone know what the problem is?

On my W7 machine (Dell X1) everything is working fine. I want to upgrade the BIOS so I downloaded the exe to do so. When I attempt to run it I get "Program Access Denied" no matter whether I run it normally or as administrator. Since my account is an administrator account it shouldn't matter. I've tried using the cmd window, but that doesn't do it either - always the same message. I've checked that the permissions on the file should allow it. What am I missing?

I don't think a Windows 2000 repair is going to fix this problem. Check your share and NTFS permissions closely and make sure that nothing was changed when the upgrade occured.

Answer:How to Deal with Access Denied Message When Deleting Program

You shouldn't delete an installed program.
You should use Add/Remove, in the Control Panel.

If you deleted it, try reinstalling the program, then use Add/Remove to remove it.

If these are left over files, from an Add/Remove, try deleting them in Safe mode.

I messed with Norton Waste Basket yesterday, trying to get rid of the
'Access Denied' bootup message as seen on another thread here. Messed with taking ownership of files in SAFE mode. Finally scared myself, restored the system from earlier in the day, all looked fine again. Now I can't access the 'Program Files' folder (didn't try yesterday, so it probably didn't work then either). I must have messed with administrator rights or something. I'm the only user of this machine, although we have a four-machine home network set up, direct cables to a router.

Error message when attempting to access Program Files folder:
C:\ Program Files is not accessible.
Access Denied.

Sounds like an authorization issue. I use no passwords to log in, I am the only User on this machine.
What can I try next?

I have numerous files which Windows 7 Uninstall left behind when uninstalling malware. The uninstall message was to the effect that, "(xx?file) Uninstalled, but couldn't automatically remove some parts. You will have to remove them manually."

So, using the Command Interface, I went to c:\program files (and (x86) and CD'd to the "xx?file" program in each malware case and entered DEL *.*, only to be greeted with ACCESS DENIED for each of the remaining files of the four or five supposedly uninstalled malwares.

So I tried the ATTRIB function: ATTRIB -r -s -i <enter>, and then the DEL operation as before, but
no joy. The same ACCESS DENIED message in each and every case.

How can I remove the remaining malware fragments "manually"?

Answer:Solved: How deal with ACCESS DENIED in Program Files Dir.

Hello Doesterr,

Dealing with malware is not always straight forward. What may appear to be a simple a task (eg. deleting a few files), may in fact be more complex than anticipated, and consequently require the use of more sophisticated tools. For example, a group policy restriction may have been set on your Program Files folder. Whilst relatively straight forward to deal with, you may not know how to check and remove such a setting.

As you have been, and currently are dealing with what appears to be adware or malware related, I would suggest you utilise the Virus and Other Malware removal section of this forum.

No doubt this particular issue can be resolved in this thread. However, adware/malware have a nasty habit of dropping more components than you may realise. I believe it is better to be safe than sorry, and to get your computer fully checked over in case there is anything lurking. Good luck with whatever you decide.

All the best,
LiquidTension

I've screwed up by reinstalling over my old installation to try and get rid of the false 'Windows is not genuine' message that keeps minimising my games while I'm playing. I used How to Restore your Windows.old Folder into a New Installation by Lordbob75 to move most of the folders back and my computer looks as it should. I realised when I rebooted that I hadn't moved Program Files (X86) over, only the original Program Files. This means that a lot of my shortcuts point to nothing and my programs won't work.

I tried using the command prompt in the repair utility but if I try to move Program files (X86), Programdata, or perflogs, which are the three remaining folders in windows.old I get an 'Access Denied' message. I have no idea how to get them to move over now, can I just copy and paste them or will that not work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This did not just happen the other night, this is normal behavior for Windows 7. That is not where your favorites are stored anyway, they are under C:\Users\Yourname\Favorites.Plagerized from another post:"These are not actually folders, but 'junction points'. Junctions behave like shortcuts, but look just like regular folders.Their purpose is to silently redirect programs that access them to their Windows Vista equivalent.Since junctions aren't really folders, it is not possible to access them, and any attempt to do so will give you an "Access Denied" error.

First of all neither in my pc or laptop i use any account to log on, i mean wth is going on? eveything was working fine until i had to reinstall xp this weekend, now is all a mess.

can you guys plese help me?

Answer:Acces denied

If you are running WinXP, then you need an account to logon. If you don't physically type anything in when you boot the computers, then you are set to automatically logon but you are definitely using an account.

And to share files, you must do one of two things: either make sure the account name and password is the same on each computer when you logon or enable the Guest Account so you can share files anonymously (less secure obviously but not a real concern if you have firewalls/routers).

Answer:Acces Denied

You didn't say which OS you're using, but in any event, you just need to create a new user (call it whatever you like) and then set the permissions for that user. For extra safety, create a password for your account so the kids can't get into it.
