Upgrading my PC. Need Suggestions

Question: Upgrading my PC. Need Suggestions

Hi Guys! I hope you have the time to see this post and give me some suggestions on Upgrading my PC.

Bought all of these parts last June 9, 2014.
This is my Rig

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 (Service Pack 1)
ECS Elite Group Deluxe H87 H3-M 1150
i5 - 4570 CPU @ 3.20 GHZ
HyperX Fury 8gb 1600mhz
PSU 600WATS Cougar
Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 Twin Frozr 256mb 2GB GDDR5
BenQ 22" LED 1920x1080
HDD 1TB for Storage
500GB split this into half Disk C: has 250 where I install my OS at and Local Disk D: where I put my games/saved games.
PC Case: Ostrog Enermax

I mainly created this Rig for gaming.

I'm planning to buy an SSD soon, any tips? Already read the most budget SSD is the Crucial m4 ssd 128gb
Also thinking of upgrading my Motherboard. Also, if ever I'm changing my MOBO, do you guys think I need to change my PSU as well?

Thoughts/Opinions/Suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Upgrading my PC. Need Suggestions

There is no gain using an SSD for storage. I would buy an SSD to transfer the system and applications to. Format the existing drive for a storage drive. That will give you the full benefit of the speed that an SSD will give you. Try some PC trans software. They do the job well.

I have an IVY GL6 mobo with an AMD Athlon 64X2 3600 Dual core. I'm looking to upgrade to a quadcore but I'm not sure which way to go.

Here are my questions:
My CPU is a AM2 socket type. So exactly which types of sockets are open to me? Is it strictly AM2 or is there backward compatibility with AM2+ and AM3? I read that there is backward compatibility but I'm just not sure.

The specs for my mobo say that the only supported processor upgrades are:

?Athlon 64 X2 with Dual Core technology up to 4800+ (up to 65 watt TDP)
?Athlon 64 up to 3800+

but I have read that often times the manufacturer doesn't list the correct upgrades because some compatible processors weren't on the market at the time the mobo was released. So what's compatible? Is it only what the manufacturer listed, or are there others?

My last question is, what are some suggestions for a quadcore upgrade for my mobo? I was looking at a AMD II X4 but I'm not even sure if that particular model is compatible.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Answer:Suggestions for upgrading CPU

The wise move would be to upgrade the motherboard and the CPU together... watching out for memory that fits... There are always great deals on systems still at online shelves six months after announcement. They have to get rid of the old to make room for the new.
Changing CPU only doesn't result in much noticeable improvement and is a pain in the @ to do

yalreet there doods... Was just wondering...I've got a ASUS P5N-MX motherboard on my system, it's runnin at 32 bit at the mo but apparently It can run At 64bit...How do I upgrade to that??? Also, how do I upgrade my Graphics?? It's currently got the inbuilt NVIDIA GeForce 7050/nForce 610i chipset..And I was wondering about boostin it up??? Any suggestions?? I'm only just gettin into gaming but I use alot of 3d animation programmes. Any Ideas...
Your help and advise would be gratefully recieved.:-D

Answer:upgrading suggestions???

I am guessing from Google you have an Intel 775 socket CPU. A video card would be a big improvment from the onboard video. To upgrade to 64 bit, you would need to install a 64bit operating sysem: XP 64bit and Vista 64bit are a couple.

I am currently thinking about upgrading my PC; however I only know the basics of computer hardware, but when going into in-depth analysis of what would be best for me I would have no clue where to start.

The purpose of upgrading is to play newer computer games with better frames per second at a decent resolution, not necessarily on maximum graphical settings. I am running Windows XP Home Edition, and do not wish to upgrade to Vista.

My computer is a Gateway 820 GM, the system specs are on this website,

I was thinking about getting a better graphics card, from 128mb to 512mb. As well adding around 1 gig of ram. However I don't know enough about hardware to know exactly what I am doing.

I would like just to know how to increase my performance within the ball park of 250-350 American dollars.

I would prefer to buy from a shop, but I am willing to buy from an online retailer. This all depends on your advice. Side note, only had 3 computers in my life, my first had a hard drive size of 1.99 gigs, and that was huge then; how the times do change.

Thank you for your time,
Anthony Noon

Ok, I know my system is not very fast, but it gets the job done (web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging, along with a smalla mount of video editing and gaming - Quake 3, Warcraft III). I want to make it a little "better" though.

I am in the process of adding more RAM because *I think* that is what it needs the most, but my primary question is "how much RAM is enough?

Is it kosher to install one 256MB stick of ram to keep all my memory sticks "the same size" or can I install a 512MB stick along with my current 256MB stick of memory (or will that cause problems)? I seem to recall that keeping memory sticks of the same size was/is the better option.

Also, is it better to use PC-2100 or PC-2700 RAM? The speed difference is 266Mhz Vs 333Mhz, respectively, correct? Will the 533 bus speed of my processor/mobo utilize one better than the other or does it not make a difference?

Thanks for your help/explanation.

Here are my full system specs:

mobo - Asus P4PE
processor - Pentium IV 2.4Ghz (533 bus)
RAM - Kingston 256MB DDR PC2700
video card - ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV 64MB
hard drive #1 - Maxtor 20GB (OS = Win XP Pro w/ SP1)
hard drive #2 - IBM 40GB (games, music, vids, storage)
sound card - Creative SoundBlaster 512
network card - Linksys LNE100TX
floppy - some generic POS floppy drive LOL
CD-rom - Lite-On 48x
CD-burner - Plextor 12X
Case - Antec KS-282 Mid-Tower
power supply - Antec True Power 480 Watt

Answer:Upgrading suggestions: RAM, then what?

I would get the fastest your board suports which I think is 2700. Depending on price you could get 3200, you would not use it to its fullest but it would be good if you ever upgrade the motherboard.

I have been away from the PC market for about 2 and a half years or so. I am not update on the technology and what's good and what's not. So I am looking for suggestions on what to upgrade in my PC. I built my PC in the summer of 2004 with these specs.

Abit AV8 Socket 939 Mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
nVidia 6800GT (which has died)
160GB Seagate Hard Drive

Since my video card died I bought a very low end graphics card. A nVidia 6200 just so I would still be able to use my PC everyday. Well since it's the holiday season, I am looking to upgrade and maybe be able to get some Christmas time deals on hardware. Please give me some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Suggestions For Upgrading My PC

is the video card PCI-E or AGP? if pci-e, a 7900GS is a great deal

also, you should be able to upgrade your processor really cheaply. find the highest processor that board can handle and grab it, 939s are really cheap nowadays

This is an overview of my computer.
Coolmaster Elite Case (link to image)

Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 (build 7601)
Gigabyte P35-DS3 Motherboard
2.33 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo
Western Digital 350GB (not sure what model)
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 512MB
Kingston 2GB DDR2 800 RAM
WinFast DTV2000 H
Thermaltake 350W PSU (not sure what model)

I'm going to be upgrading to these.

Kingston Value 2GB DDR2 800 RAM $35

WD 3.5 Blue 1TB WD10EALX SATA3 32M 7200rpm HDD $65

Gigabyte 1GB GT430 PCI-E VGA Card $70

Corsair 500CX ATX Power Supply Unit $81

Total $251 which is hopefully a weeks pay so I can get these in two weeks (saving up and all)

So i'll have an extra 1TB HDD with my 350GB and an extra 2GB making it a full 3.5gb (cause i'm on 32bit windows)

Because the GPU requires a 400W PSU I figured I'd go up to 500W.
My question is for those who know their computers, would the GPU and PSU fit into my Case and will the GPU work with my Motherboard?

If the GPU ad PSU aren't compatible with my MB then will a Gigabyte 1GB GT220 PCI-E VGA Card work?

I play games but I mainly use this computer for Multimedia purposes. I'll be using the Adobe suit very thoroughly so I need something that'll make my computer run a tad smoother.

I was thinking of purchasing a SSD 32GB and installed my OS and Adobe Suit on that.

Hi! I bought Battlefield 2 a couple of days ago, although it wouldn't run on my current system. I built my computer myself. It has:

AMD athlon 2600 1.9ghz
Powercolor radeon 9200
512 mb ddr ram
120 gb hard drive
asus motherboard

I was thinking of upgrading my processor, graphics card, and motherboard to:

AMD 64 bit processor
New motherboard to accomodate it
New graphics card- I was thinking an X700 pci express card

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Answer:upgrading my pc: any suggestions?

An AMD 64 would be a good step, but how fast?

DFI motherboard is good for overclocking.

If you're planning to get a pci-e gpu, then you obviously want a mobo that can support it. You may then also need a new PSU, but that all depends upon your current one.

I would go with a 6800 GT though if you can afford it. It works perfectly with 64 bots on my computer (note that 64 bots is well beyond the supported limit, requiring much more power). If that's too expensive, well, the 6600 GT will run fantastic with toned down settings.

ok i want to upgrade my computer to handle all the new games coming out (HL2, doom3, etc.). now i am a pretty big gamer on a low performance computer. i just want to know what would best enhance my gaming fps and quality

Here are my specs:
Emachine <--- model t2482
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.0
AM37 M.B.
512 DDR ram pc2100
Radeon 9600 pro 128 mb

i have about a 300$ cap
i was bending towards a MB/processor upgrade but all the compatiblity and installation issues just gave me a headache
i think the best and easiest course would to upgrade my ram and vid card but i dont know if it would make a large impact(since they seem relativlyup to date). basically i want to know if it is my processor, vid card, ram , etc. that is slowing me down if not all of it

Answer:Upgrading suggestions

Just an idea...

I think that your processor is decent. Faster RAM always helps; see if your motherboard can handle PC3200. I would say a bare minimum of 512Mb of RAM. If you have money leftover, see how you can upgrade your video card (make sure its an AGP graphics card). Good luck! :grinthumb

What i'm asking for is any tips on upgrades or, suggestions on do i actually need to upgrade anything at all.... The only thing i'm probably not wanting to upgrade is the MOBO since it's probably a hassle and a half.

Thanks ahead of time.

Answer:Upgrading My PC.... Need Suggestions.

Here's the list of supported CPU's for the mobo. I would jump on the fastest 6 core like this one, search for the 1100T if possible while supplies last, please note your bios and potentally needed updates and prefrom same before installing the upgrade CPU. Will the rig be wickedly faster ...doubtful, but faster it will be on complex tasks. Other then maximizing the the CPU potential, your may well want to save and plan on a new mobo and CPU and yes it's a lot of work but it's satisfying work that you'll learn and grow from and we're here to help you with if needed.

Hey everyone. I have a Dell Dimension 2350 (crappy computer I know). I would really like to upgrade it a little bit. It was running really really slowly but I read the thread about disabling uneeded XP services and that helped a lot. I'm not much of a gamer, I only play Battlefield 1942 and Call Of Duty and I have to have everything on its lowest setting for those to work properly. However, frequently I have lots of programs open at a time (7-8) and applications load slowly and performance goes way down.
I was thinking of just upgrading the memory either 256mb or 512mb. Would the 512 be worth it or do I need to get a new processor for it to make a difference. Keep in mind that I'm very tight on budget and I only want a minimal upgrade, nothing drastic.
Also, I read on here a post by someone (MajorAttitude I think) where they reccomended formatting windows and then

I have built my own gaming PC.

I'm semi-knowledgeable when it comes to PC repair/upgrades and general knowledge regarding PCs. Anyhow, I have never ventured into the realm of processor upgrades. My rig is mainly used for gaming, and I'm obsessed with ultra graphics tweaking and settings. My current set up is:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Central Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 Processor
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570
Video Memory: 1.25 GB
Hard Drive: 1 TB
RAM: 6GB DIMM 64 Bit
1333 MHZ

The nitty-gritty of my current cpu is:
CPU Name AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 Processor
Code Name Model 5, Stepping 3
Manufacturer AuthenticAMD
Current Clock Speed 3000 Mhz
Max Clock Speed 3000 Mhz
Voltage 1.5V
External Clock 200 Mhz

CPU ID: AMD64 Family 16 Model 5 Stepping 3
Socket Designation: CPU 1
As for the motherboard:
Model 2AB1
Manufacturer FOXCONN
BIOS Name BIOS Date: 09/07/10 08:41:32 Ver: 6.04
BIOS Vendor American Megatrends Inc.
SMBIOS Version 6.04
BIOS Date 9/7/2010
Anyhow, my question:
I figured the best way to beef up my rig is to go with a new processor as its probably about the weakest part of my rig. A new motherboard or more RAM is also a possibility if you think it would be necessary. I'm trying to hover within or around the 500$ range, but I'm flexible. Currently I have a ASUS A7V8X-X mobo with an Athlon 2800+ chip on it, but have been having some quirky problems.

My video card wouldn't work at all (9700pro), then I fixed the vid card problem, but it still boots funny when its cold (no display untill windows loads then requires a reboot in order to play games, like it needs to be warmed up).

new mobo drivers got the card working, but the section on ATI's website for the cold boot problem provides no solution.
I get strange shutdowns and restarts somtimes aswell, some times it will just reboot while your doing something, and other times when i click shutdown it will reboot for no reason while your doing somthing, and I've had to reformat (winXP home) twice because it will startup and say the OS on D: has a messed up config, when the OS is on C:

I have a felling this all be leading back to a strange compatiblity problem between the mobo and my attached hardware.

So, I am gonna get the computer guy to switch out my ASUS board and 2800+ for an intel based mobo and a 3ghz chip...

What should I get? i would like a 3ghz intel chip and a very stable Mobo, but don't really know what to look for when it comes to stablility.

I would love the bigger CPU, it would really help with all the programs i run, and would keep from having to upgrade for a while.

Well, I got this brand new Acer Veriton 7600g for free. Considering I sold my old gaming computer for an X360 and was running on a 1.0GHz replacement, I was pretty excited. I opened up the case and noticed that it has an AGP 8x slot along with two more memory slots to fill. I took and put a spare fan in the empty fan port in the back of the case. I also pulled a 300w power supply out of the closet (probably spare from a cheap case purchase) and put that in there to replace the 200w power supply. I had 100 dollars in BestBuy money on a gift card on my wallet so I went out and got two more Kingston 512 and just installed them. Now, I want something sweet to put in the AGP slot. This is why I am posting today. I was thinking about getting the BFG 7800GS but I wanted to get some more opinions, first. I know I am not going to get anything real great, but this thing should at least last me through college. All I play is some strategy and MMO games, anyway... so this computer should last me a while.

Answer:Upgrading an Acer (Need suggestions)

First you will need to replace the powersupply. a cheep 300w won't run a high end card like that. I recomend this powersupply
It is made by an exelent company (FSP) and will power a card like that and still leave headroom for future upgrades.

The geforce 7800 is a good card for agp systems but the Radeon X1950 pro is the best agp card currently avalible and rocomended if you can afford it.
there are some X1950s

Hello people, got myself a cheap computer, got 2GB memory running W7 (32 Bit) I intend to upgrade its RAM in time, but the graphics are my main issue, I'm using the on-board/ Integrated and as a result my system performance is struggling. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

Note: I'm only looking for something to be capable of playing some Browser like games such as World of tanks etc. for now. I'l upgrade the whole unit at later date from general computer to a gaming spec.

Answer:Upgrading from onboard, suggestions

So you know 32 bit operating system can only take advantage of 4gb ram maximum.

now for light games, I'd say a hd 6670 or gt 640 would be a good choice in my opinion. anything higher and you would have to upgrade your psu as well but you are going to upgrade anyway in the future as You say.

Hey everybody, I'm new here, and I hope you can help!

Anyways, right now, I'm running:
2000 Gateway
1 ghz Pentium III
256 RAM
Unknown Motherboard
ATi Radeon 9600 Pro
80 gb Western Digital Primary HD
20 gb Seagate Secondary HD

What I'm looking at:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Retail $210
ASUS K8N-E Deluxe Motherboard $140
ENERMAX EG325P-VE SFMA 320W NoiseTaker PSU $50

First of all, those four things would be the only things I want to upgrade. Case remains the same. Are there any better/cheaper setups out there? This would be used for some gaming, some video editing, and simultaneous large photo editing.

If this setup is O.K., what will I need to do to my current computer to install this? (someone said that I couldn't swap from a Pentium to an AMD). I'm willing to reformat and reinstall Windows XP onto the 80 GB HD, where it is now. The 20 GB is where I store my files, will that need to be touched? How should I go about doing this? Thanks!!!

Answer:Upgrading computer: Suggestions!

umm...can you still use the same case???? also for gaming and editing i would sugest a p4, athlon's are really used for just gaming. if you get a 2.8 p4 you'll be good i belive.

with the HDD do you have every thing you can get on the 20 and then you're just gonna transfer it to the 80?

welcome to the forums bro...hope you get all the help you need.

what kind of RAM is that? do you have a link to it or some thing? 80 bucks looks a little iffy.

I have a Thinkpad X1, late 2011 model, with an i7 2640M, SSD, 8GB RAm, the lot.As the computer is now 2 years old, I was looking into upgrading, but it seems my options are more varied and rather surprising than I thought. My first idea was to go for the X1 Carbon of course, butr the processor it has, seems to be much slower than mine, specially on the video side. Any of the Series U i7 processors seem to be much slower than mine! I suppose because Ultrabook specifications require less power consumption and, therefore, slower CPU clocks. But come on, the Graphics base frequency is half! I have on the table the X1 Carbon, the T431s and the X230. From all the options, the only one that seems anywhere near teh spec of my computer, even after 2 years, is the X230, as it also has a  Series M processor. But the drawbacks are that this machine has an "uglier" design and it's not much of an upgrade over what I already have (a few decimal dots on the clock speed, more memory which is welcome, but that's pretty much all). Then there's 4th gen processors. Are they worth the upgrade? Again, clock speeds are slower, and they have DMI2 and extended instrction sets but I don't understand the advantage on those. Also Vpro, what is it? What do you people reckon I should do? I don't want to let my X1 get too old and this is the main reason I am looking into an upgrade, but it seems the machine is still pretty current and, performance wise, I can't complain, it runs amazing.&... Answer:Suggestions on upgrading over Thinkpad X1?

If you need power, than consider the T440p with the quad core CPU. The Haswell upgrade is more about battery and power saving, not really about shear performance upgrade. Intel is no longer pushing for huge performance boost on their CPU line like they were before, they are more concerned with power. In the old day, windows OS were the main push for CPU performance upgrade, given that now Win 7 and Win 8 runs pretty well in 5 years old computers, there is no longer that demand for performance boosts. Also, since laptops are cheap and is competing with Tablets (i.e. iPad) as the main device people takes around with them, people demands that laptops also have battery life as good as their tablets. So power use minimisation is what Intel is driving towards for mobile processors. Extended Instructions set make certain computational intensive processes less CPU intensive. It is they are applying certain mathematical rules to complex equations, to help the CPU solve them faster. So this is how CPU becomes faster even though their clock rate is not rising as much, this is also how CPU saves energy. vPro technology is a range of features that helps with virtualisation and security, which you probably do not really need. using the ULT processors probably give about same performance as your X230 regular voltage processors, so there is no need for upgrade, unless you need the FHD LCD. Right now battery life is the main focus of the mobile CPU ... Read more

Which card out there have the best performance without braking the bank, my budget is $180-200 for video card, and as for games, well, as long as it plays Crysis with decent FPS I'm ok.

I was planning on upgrading to a new 3d card very soon. currently i have a geforce 2 ultra card, and with 1.8 p4 processor, 1gig ddr ram, soundblaster live value.

I was planning on only spending about $150 to $200, and i'll be going threw price watch. I want the 3d card for gaming ofcourse so i'd like a card that can play newer games very well, and future games like doom 3 and halflife 2.

I currently have my eyes set on a ATI 9600 XT 256 card for 157 dollars, but i'm not sure if thats my best choice or not. Anyone have suggestions on the perfect card for me? it appears that the 9800 pro's and XT's are out of my price range except for maybe the 128's.. And i haven't been looking at geforce lately so i'm not sure if any from nvidia's are worth getting instead.... from what i read lately sounds like ATI is the best now.

please if you have any suggestions on what i should get i'd greatly appreciate it.. i'd like to order tonight or tomorrow.

Hello, i have a crappy, old, obselite computer, sucks when i maxed it out even. so, i decided, i need a new Motherboard, to upgrade Video Card and my CPU, that all i need is pretty much what im looking for:

PCI express
184 Pin physical memory slot
Common Intel-supported processor slot, or possibly with a processor.
Any suggestions on meeting that criteria?

Ive googled and found a few, but then the proccessor slot was vitually extinct.

What processor? No slot holds all Intel cpu's?

Here are my netbook specifications:

AMD E-450 APU with Radeon HD Graphics ~1.6GHz
AMD Radeon HD 6320 Graphics Display

I am playing a game which takes 400MB - 500MB of Memory and I run 2 to 3 mostly (Running 1 will give me 1MB to 50MB free Memory). It will empty my free memory and max out the CPU.

Which should i upgrade to achieve a considerably high performance gain? CPU or RAM? or anything else?

This is my first post! Ok, i have a powerspec g200 that is use as a work computer. I run GIS and MatLab software. Sometimes it takes 3-4 days to run a single code with big "while" in MatLab and i would obviously like this to take less time.

what i have-
Intel? Core? i7 - 920 Processor
Windows Ultimate 64 Bit
System Board
Intel DX58SO
Kingston HyperX 12GB Kit (3x4GB Modules) 1600MHz
Hard Drive
1.28TB RAID 0 - (2 x 640GB SATA HDDs) 7,200 RPM
DVD ?R/?RW Drive
22x Dual Layer DVD?R/?RW Drive
Dual Radeon HD4670 PCI Express cards in Crossfire?
Power Supply
500 Watts

I upgraded the ram about 3 months age. Also, I recently bought a 60GB patriot inferno SSD to put my OS on! It should be here in a week.

I notice that my total processor usage will be ~60-70% and ram usage ~11GB when running some codes. Any suggestions to make this thing run faster?
Would getting a couple of velociraptors help?

exodortch, Welcome to SF. First off you have quite a bit of stuff running off 500w PSU what make and model is that? I like you system and was wondering have you tried the ReadyBoost feature? As soon as you add your SSD it likely won't need it but till then do you have a RB usb or sd flash drive and try it?

My stepdad built my current PC several years ago and It is really starting to bug me when I play current games.

I need to be able to play age of conan without constantly hitting single digit FPS numbers.
I'm running a AMD 64 3200 cpu and a nividia 6800 right now.

I know I have to replace my mobo/cpu/video card/mem.
I don't want top of the line stuff, but just stuff up to par that will be able to play most games pretty well.

Suggestions? I prefer AMD and nvidia. Budget around 500, maybe a little more.

Also, I have a 350watt antec PS...would I need to get more wattage if I upgraded?
And would I need a new case? My current case is this...I'm not sure about cooling with all this new stuff.
Stuff I'm looking at(I really have no idea here)
And some brand of 4GB of DDR3 memory...not sure.

Hello everyone,

I'm upgrading my CPU and motherboard (and by extension, RAM, since it's DDR2), and I want some input on whether or not I should spend some cash and go with a Sandy Bridge (or Ivy Bridge?) system, or a Phenom II (or Bulldozer?) one.

Obviously, the Phenom II system would work out cheaper, and I like cheaper!
But I'm wondering if that by not opting for the latest-and-greatest Intel chip, would I be looking at an upgrade sooner rather than later, down the road?

Any and all suggestions and/or input are welcomed; my location and current system specs are in my signature, so please keep those in mind when suggesting anything.

I'd prefer buying locally, since most of the popular components are easily available via retail, but I wouldn't mind ordering online if the price is right (although with shipping rates the way they are, I can't imagine that happening anytime soon).

Answer:Upgrading after a very long time; need some suggestions please

Hi Rage.

Honestly speaking, I find that the choice of CPU, whether AMD or Intel, should not warrant that you look at an upgrade too soon. I have been using the Phenom II X3 720 for three years now and still it performs really well for most purposes.

Now benchmarks do reveal that the Intel (Ivy Bridge / Sandy Bridge) are far superior to their AMD (Bulldozer / Phenom II) counterparts. Consider the i5 3570k (the CPU you incidentally suggested for my new build). It costs around $229 which is 20% more as compared to AMD's flagship FX 8150. Although the AMD has 8 cores it is outperformed by the quad core Intel by around 40% (and above) in most benchmarks. In games, the 3570K stock outperforms an overclocked 8150 by approx. 30%.

The above, however, are just numbers. For most everyday tasks you should be fine with either CPU. If gaming at 1920x1080, your GPU will likely be the most limiting factor as neither CPU will cause any bottlenecks.

My opnion is that you finalise your budget. If you see that the Ivy Bridge can be comfortably accomodated go for it. Else I'm sure that the AMD will not disappoint.

One thing of note is that the Phenom IIs have generally benched better than the Bulldozers. That makes me sad as expectations from AMD were much higher.

I've got the Lg BD 550 that I want to upgrade for 2 reasons: It isn't wifi and will not recognize videos on my comp when connected by USB flash drive.

This is the one that seems to accomplish those goals.
Anyone have experience with this model or any suggestions on a better choice?

I was considering going to a PS4, but that will not play bluray discs.

Answer:Upgrading Bluray player suggestions

I have this one. It is pretty decent for what it is, and sees frequent firmware updates.

The PS4 can play BD, by the way.

If you are looking for different file format compatibility, I think Sony leads the pace there.

Here is the deal My dad has an old compact 733 Celeron, that is basically used for light gaming, and mainly internet usage. I was thinking that it could be cheaply upgraded to a respectable computer that would last him for several more years. He already bought a brand new Maxtor 80GB 8mb HD last month, and I have an extra 256mb stick of PC2700 ram that I'll give him. I'd like to keep this fairly cheap, say in the ballpark of a $120 give or take some.

I'd like to get this for him before I go to college in Jan. This is what I was thinking I would get:

Athlon Xp 2200 $75

They don't need a fancy Heatsyc/fan, because it won't be overclocked.

As for the motherboard I'm open for all suggestions? The main Catches are that the board has to be MICRO ATX, and the case has 3 pci slots. I don't know, maybe recommend something from this list. It doesn't have to be fancy, mainly just reliable and cheap.

Also My big worry is that I don't know if his power supply would be able to handle this newer set up. I don't know how many watts it is though. What ever stock Celerons came with back then. I guess if necessary I could buy a cheap $20 ATX case with power supply and get an ATX board instead. As that would be a better deal than buying a power supply seperate. But that would only be as a last resort.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Answer:Suggestions for Upgrading a 733 Celeron to Athlon XP

Even the pic in my sig won't last several years. Well, it will still be working, but with today's apps and programs and better OS's coming out soon, you should save up a little more and get at least a AMD XP 2400. Get the memory (hopefully DDR) up to 512, that should be good for a while. An 80 gig harddrive is good, but I would not get a Maxtor, try Western Digital instead, for a harddrive that will last a little longer.

Hopefully someone else will suggest a case for you, I would personally upgrade the mobo to a full ATX with AGP 8X with a few PCI slots, therefore changing the need for a different case. I would say at least a 350 watt PSU for upgrading room from that. You can get cases with PSU's up to any wattage, you just gotta look around.

I would have posted links and stuff with my suggestions, but other people on the board are a lot better at that than me.

So, I basically suggested to upgrade a lot more than you wanted, and is well out of your price range, but to make a real advance from what you have to work with, I think it's the only way.

Maybe you should chip in with your family and get a nice barebones PC from or maybe that's all up to date and you can easily upgrade later.

i haven't been keeping up with new hardware as i once did so i'm hoping some of you might be able to make some suggestions for my fathers computer. he doesn't have a lot to spend so upgrades are preferable to a new rig.

he has a dell xps 420 desktop has an ati radeon hd 3600 graphics card, 3gigs of ram, and runs vista on a 28" monitor.

he likes playing games and the rig is showing it's age. he'd like to play borderlands 2 and farcry 3, but if he could run them, i don't think they would run well.

i know more ram is needed.

1- the specs on his computer state, "One PCIe x16 graphics slot with support for PCIe 2.0 future graphics cards." if the system will run a PCIe 2 card, why don't they say that, or is it a firmware update to the PCIe port or something else?

2- any suggestions on a graphics card in the $100 - 150 range that might let him keep this system going, playing borderlands 2 & far cry 3 for another few years until a new computer is in the budget?

thanks, i appreciate your time,

I'm upgrading my video card to PCI-e x16 with a new motherboard ( GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ), and was wondering what would be a good video card to upgrade to that would run games like WoW and LOTRO with decent framerate. my budget is about $120-140 on the video card.

My specs are:
Rosewill 450W PSU (which i may need to upgrade if the video card takes up a lot of power... please tell me if the card you suggest requires a PSU upgrade)
Pentium D 820 (which runs hot, so i either need a graphics card with good cooling or better than stock cooling )

I just found a deal on an eVGA Geforce 8600 GT w/ a 500W PSU for real cheap, is that a good video card... i can also get the combo deal with a 9400 GT as well as a 9500 GT

What capacity are you looking for in a SSD?

So I got a slingbox for Christmas and I need more ports.

I currently have 5 windows xp computers, a printer, Apple time capsule w/wi-fi AP, and a vonage box connected to a Netgear 8-port FVS318 connected to another Vonage box which is in turn connetced to my dsl modem.

So I'm looking to move to a 16 port router with some type of QoS support so that I can prioritize the traffic from the vonage boxes so they don't cut out when I'm on the phone & transferring files or using my sling box.

I have been browsing around and I found Netgears FS116E but I'm not quite sure if this would be a good fit or quite how it would best fit into my network since it is a switch.

I have also been told I should look at something with gigabit capacity.

I am looking for hardware suggestions to upgrade our network at work. Is there a business grade router that will give us reliable wired and wireless connections for up to about 20 users and visitors while still keeping guest WiFi users and a security DVR isolated from devices on the internal wired and wireless LANs? If not, any suggestions for combining two or three pieces of hardware to get what we need?

Right now, we have ...

1) A cable modem configured in bridge mode and using a static public IP address.

2) A 10/100Base-T LAN port on the modem connects to the WAN port of Router #1 (A D-link SOHO wireless router).

3) One 10/100Base-T LAN port on Router #1 connects to the 10/100Base-T LAN port of a security DVR inside the building. The DVR has a static IP address and Router #1 has port forwarding configured to allow Internet access to the DVR

4) A second 10/100Base-T LAN port on Router #1 connects to the 10/100Base-T WAN port of Router #2 (Also a D-link SOHO wireless router). Router #2 has a static private IP address on its WAN port and Router #1 has that address set for DMZ.

5) One 10/100Base-T LAN port on Router #2 connects to a 10/100Base-T LAN port on a 24 port unmanaged switch. All office desktop computers, networked printers, and our server connect to this 24 port switch.

6) The LAN ports on the two routers are on different, non-overlapping, ranges of private IP addresses.

If you will look at my system specks you will see what my present system consist of. My plans are to replace my mobo with a Z68. Add 120 gb SSD. Up my memory to 16 gb's. Upgrade my video card (I probably will not go crossfire or SLI). Add higher wattage PSU. Also buy couple more HD's.

Here is where I need help. I have never setup an SSD for quick sync, I have never setup a RAID configuration. I am presently researching exactly what Brand and Models of Hardware I want.

Before anyone asks I will explain why I am doing this. I am a student in computer science about one more semester away from associates degree. My needs with this system is to learn more by doing. As mentioned in the subject I am upgrading from a 1.7 Celeron to a P4 3.0E(i believe) w/ HTT. I have looked at newegg for a 478 socket mobo and I have come to some variations of a Asus P4S800 line. Are these boards worth anything? I am looking for a mobo in the "sweet spot".

MOBO: ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
RAM: OCZ 512MB [2x256] Dual Channel Kit ... OCZ400512ELDC-K [rated @ 2-2-3-6] [slots 1 and 3] [PC3200 DDR400]
HDD1: MAXTOR S-ATA 120GB w/8MB Cache
HDD2: MAXTOR S-ATA 300GB w/16MB Cache

I was thinking of adding the OCZ 1024MB [2x512] Dual Channel Kit ... OCZ4001024ELDC-K [rated @ 2-2-3-6] [slots 2 and 4] [PC3200 DDR400].

Some told me it would be ok to do so since all modules are same performance/type. While others, including OCZ themselves, recommended not to, mainly due to some stability issues resulting from having more than 2 high performance modules installed.

I may end up trying all four slots as stated above and see how it goes, if there is problems would probably just take out the original 512 kit and try to sell it leaving me with just the 1024 kit.

Would like some input from the experts here and hopefully learn what my best options are in terms of improving performance.

p.s. No plans for overclocking as of yet, stock cooling all around

I've managed to upgrade some of my home PC's from Win 7 or Win 8 to Wn 10 without any significant problems, but I am having major difficulty upgrading one of my PC's.

It is running Win 7 Home 32-bit and when I originally ran the Windows 10 upgrade advisor, it indicated that I could not upgrade as my NVidia GEForce 6600 graphics card was incompatible with Windows 10.

I tried various workarounds, using suggestions on this and other sites, to upgrade with the GEForce card but none were successful. So I purchased and installed a new graphics card - an AMD Radeon R7 240, which should be Win 10 compatible.

I am currently wanting to begin the process of upgrading various parts of my computer in the upcoming months. The first item I would like to do upgrade is the RAM. I am currently using 8BG (4x2) and would like to double that. I was thinking of going with the Corsair Vengeance 2x8. Eventually I would like to have a pretty sick gaming computer. As of right now, it can handle a lot but can struggle from time to time if I crank up the graphic settings.

I guess the reason I am posting this is to ask a few questions. Would upgrading RAM be a good starting point if wanting to upgrade other hardware as well. I was thinking of also swapping out the video card, cpu, and adding some fans (when I get money that is). I must sound like a complete novice right now lol.. but, I am ready to finally go through with this because my computer is starting to feel like it is getting behind the times in terms of speed and performance haha. Anyway, any insight into this topic and or first time upgrading, specifically with the RAM, would be grrreat. Thanks.

I then explicitly uninstalled any NVidia drivers/software using the Control Panel/Program uninstall - still unable to upgrade to Win 10. I also ran the Wagnard tools "Display driver uninstaller" and removed any NVidia software/drivers - still unable to upgrade. I am using the latest drivers from the AMD website.

I also tried to upgrade using the Media Creation tool and a Win 7 image from DVD (previously this also failed to work and gave the incompatible graphics card error); this seemed to work up to a point, but after a reboot it wanted me to select a keyboard layout but neither my usb keyboard no... Answer:Upgrading to Win 10 - after upgrading incompatible graphics card

Windows 10 no longer supports NVIDIA 6-Series Graphics Cards anymore as of Windows 8

I bought Windows 7 having come from Vista. However, there is a BIOS update for my system. The new BIOS update states: The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational. If you are currently experiencing any symptoms on your notebook PC, please contact HP for support. It is located here:

I'd love to flash it but not sure if it will ruin my computer as it's more than likely not designed for flash when Windows 7 is on it or do you's know any better?

I also have 2 blue vertical lines going do the right hand side of the screen. I've seen loads of problems but no solutions. Has any fixed this HP problem?

Cheers folks!

Answer:Upgrading BIOS after Upgrading from Vista to 7

The BIOS is the stuff that happens BEFORE Windows starts to load.
Do you have issues with overheating or with the fan? If so, the BIOS update is for you.
Also, BIOS flashes are dangerous - and you can turn your computer into a paperweight by doing it incorrectly. In short, if it ain't broke - don't fix it!

The type of lines that you describe on your screen are usually caused by hardware issues. Send it in for repair if the system is under warranty. If not, then get an estimate from a local computer store - it may be cheaper to live with it.

Evening all,First of all I wish to add to my RAM. I currently have 64MB and wish to increase this to at least 256MB. I have made enquiries at various shops, PC World etc., and have been told that I MAY need PC100 or, I think I am correct, PC300. I have checked my manual and the only reference I can find to memory modules is the following: 168 pin, 3.3V Dimm Sockets with gold plated contacts unbuffered SDRam. I am now stumped as there is no mention of PC100 etc., I do not want to buy memory that is no good, neither do I want to screw up my machine. Any help on identifying the modules I want would be appreciated.Secondly my father has obtained from the local council a PC with Win 95 on it. They also through in a printer that is no use to him as this requires Win 98 as a minimum. The PC he came with has no boot disks, no start up disk on CDRom or anything. He has been given a CDRom, legitimate, of Win 98SE so that he can upgrade. When we try to do so we get the message that there is already an OS on the PC and that the upgrade disk is required. Is there any way at all of wiping Win 95 from the PC, I have tried FDisk which doesn't work, so that Win 98SE can be installed, or does he need for definate the Win 98 upgrade disk?Any help on the above problems, which are rather urgent would be appreciated. Many thanks.

A few things: Rosewill SUCKS. Get a beter case, and get a PSU from Antec, Thermaltake, Ennermax, OCZ, or PCP&C. And switch the mobo to a DFI Lanparty nForce4 Ultra-D. As for the CPU cooler and the VGA cooler, u dont need either unless ur planning to OC. Stock will be fine if ur not

I'm in a dorm with wireless only (go figure). I have a POS linksys wireless card in my PC right now and the connection drops like crazy. I've been using a DL resumer and a 5 meg file took like 40 minutes to dl and resumed like 70 times. I want to be able to play Xbox Live and PC games (War 3 in particular, DoTA ftw). Suggestions really appreciated, and I'll probably order it today as going to the library every day for homework and not being able to play games is ftl.

By the way, the connection seems a bit weak for everyone so I'll probably need something really strong to prevent dropping.

Answer:WAP Suggestions Please

the wireless ap's provided by your dorm are probably overloaded, so my thought is that a new wireless card isn't going to make any difference, because you're only going to get so much out of the AP's.

Hi! I wanted to know if you knew of any games of the type of Virtual Villagers (not the sims... lol) you can reccomend
Thank you

Answer:any suggestions?

Uhm, let's see here. We have the sandbox games Black and White 1 and 2.
There's Second Life, but that's an online game, and I don't know enough about it to recommend it. (Just read a PCgamer article on it.)
Other than that, I know of no "Virtual Villagers" games. Do you want games that have third person views of the person you're controlling (Second life, I think), or complete control over an entire village as you try and purge the world of evil with a giant pet something that you can train?

Question: Suggestions???

Hey guys,Ive been having issues with my computer for a LONG time and I'm looking for some suggestions before I decide to throw it out the window    ...  or just into the hands of someone that repairs computers..   ANYWAY..   I have a custom-built computer.. Windows XP SP2..  Its probably about 4 or 5 years old now..About 6 or 7 months ago, I started getting stop errors with "random" errors it seemed every time I would watch video..  After doing some research I thought that it was probably my onboard video card acting up.  I decided to go buy a video card and see what happened....  Well this made things worst than before.  The stop errors came more frequently. After taking out the new video card and re-installing the drivers for my onboard card, I did some more research...  Since every stop error I was getting was so random and hardly ever the same, I thought that maybe I was dealing with some bad RAM..  I went out and bought 2 extra sticks of RAM to check the sticks of RAM that I already had because I thought they both were corrupted..  AGAIN i still get the stop errors..  I even tried doing a complete format on my partition and installed a clean version of XP.   It took me a LONG time to do this, because I was STILL getting stop errors while I was trying to format AND install.  I got in the computer and jiggled around the hard drive wires and made sure everything was ... Don't apologise for it being's refreshing once in awhile to get details. It sounds as if you have done a great job so far on troubleshooting...Sorry the results have not yet rewarded you. Here's what i would from here:DLoad and run MemTest...even though you replaced the RAM it is still suspect given the symptoms...let it run a few hours.Any errors at all mean bad RAM.Replace the IDE cable...make sure it is an 80 conducter 40 pin cable. They do go bad.In Device Manager find the Primary IDE controller...right clik it and select'll get a warning message. Ignore it and re-boot.Last but not least borrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there to see if things calm down...unstable power can also cause these conditions....Good Luck and let us know.

I am looking for suggestions for (preferably) freeware, non-violent games. I prefer to play against my computer (e.g., not online). I have MS Space Cadet Pinball but I've grown tired of it. Something challenging would be nice, perhaps another pinball game, or bowling or pool, or ???

I have a quad core processor with 8 GB of RAM on my desktop, and my laptop is a duo core with 2 GB of RAM, so hardware isn't much of an issue.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Question: Any Suggestions

I have been having a lot of problems with anything from streaming video to playing game on my computer for awhile but yesterday afternoon I had an update option pop up for what I found out is the driver for my graphics card. The issue is the update that downloaded wasn't the correct one for my system so I went through all the options to find the right driver I selected it and downloaded it, once the download had finished I tried to do a few things and I noticed a notable difference i.e. programs loading faster, web pages loading much faster, games actually working. I know there are things that I can do to get my computer running at its best I just don't know what those are other than the basic stuff like running defrag and other things at that level. Any suggestions about what else I can do to get my computer running the best that it can would be appreciated, thank you.

Question: Need Suggestions

Hello Everyone,

Recently I have discovered that my current Wireless router may need replaced. While surfing the web, gaming, or just even being connected to the wireless on any of my devices at home I am randomely being disconnected from the network whether it be on my laptop, my xbox, or even my phone. While facing this problem, I have come up with an alternative conlusion until I can afford a new router. I have purchased a 50' ethernet cord to run from our family home office to my bedroom to be able to connect, because it seems when i am connected via ethernet, i am not kicked from the network. Icurrently own a Cisco Valet Plus (M20) Router which is approximately two years old.

My router hgas not shown any of these issues in the past with the same number of devices connected to the router wirelessly. We have even upgraded our connection via our ISP and it has been doing this.
My question is.. What router would you reccomend?
I have found a few that fit my needs.

We have two laptops, two desktops, my phone, xbox 360, network printer, and other various devices connected to this router from time to time. the only wireless devices are my phone, xbox and 2 laptops.
I have been looking into the Belkin line of products,
along with the apple airport extreme base station

I have noticed that the belkin products tend to be more pricey for the dual band technology ... Read more

Answer:Need Suggestions

Dual band is great if you want to do things like stream media and connect to the internet at the same time. You can stream your media on the 5GHz channel while connecting to the internet on the 2.4GHz channel. This is of course only possible if your device you are connecting with supports the 5GHz band. As for the number of devices any router will be able to safely handle the number you are depicting, any slowdown would be an Internet speed problem.
Is your router next to a cordless phone by chance that may be broadcasting on or close to the 2.4 band? If so try moving your router away from the phone and see if this is a problem, I also recommend changing the channel on your router, try channel 1, 6, or 11, it may be everyone in your area is on the same channel.

Question: Any suggestions??

As you probably saw in my other post, I now have a DVD drive. Problem is, it didn't come with a DVD player software. I am looking for 2 things in this, 1) I want to watch DVD's and 2) I want to be able to pull audio from the DVD to integrate into custom music mixes.

Anyone have any suggestions??

PS: The easier to use the better, I prefer a short learning curve Also, Freeware vs Payware is a non issue, I generally have access to whatever I want to get via friends in the business.

Answer:Any suggestions??

Check the MultiMedia downloads here at Major Geeks. Some good media players are: VLC, KMPlayer, Zoom, DivX, Xvid, etc.... be sure to grab yourself a codec pack while your in there Windows Media Player 11 isn't bad either (available from MS Windows Updates under Optional Software). As for the recording, Audacity should do the trick (also in the MultiMedia section); if not, I'm sure you'll find something in the MM downloads or someone else will post a good one for you!

I have a dell xps studio 8100 and the cpu has been running way too hot. The fan kicks on and sounds like a vaccum cleaner its so loud. I would like to buy an after market one, a better one, but I have no idea what would fit?

I cannot get to the back side of the mobo, as its got rivets in it. Basically, I would like a fan to just "plug and play" but im not quite that savvy on what would fit.

My HDD just failed, for the first time in any pc, and I bought a new one and was able to install it today and still now the fans seem to be running a little hotter.

any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh and im poor. Budget is best!

Answer:Need new fan for cpu, suggestions?

Well, Dell tends to use a lot of proprietary hardware on their computers, so going with an aftermarket CPU cooler may be a problem, you should first try to reseat the heath sink: remove, clean the old thermal goo, ,apply new better thermal past and reinstall.

Not sure what else to do on this one.....good friend of mine who is working on Windows ME has had probs with her system for a while now. The main problem she has is when trying to open up sites on the net, it takes just forever even though she's on broadband and more often than not she just can't open up sites. She has had a few error messages coming up which i am waiting on seeing what they are so i can look into them further but she has recently installed the following and is regularly running and updating them to good effect....

Adaware SE

I mentioned about also running the free McAfee scanner thing from the stickys on here but she says she had a big problem with McAfee once and it knacked her system for some reason? Would the scan and removal tool be ok for her to use rather than the full McAfee software if she had probs with that before? I thought the stuff she had recently installed above would have improved her system no end ....or am i wrong?

Any help much appreciated..

Answer:Any other suggestions?

Well, the first big problem is that she is running Windows Me.....

Sorry, Microsoft humor there.

Also, could you elaborate on her system specs and the error messages she is receiving? Perhaps she doesn't have enough memory (RAM) or too many programs are hogging all her available memory to load web pages efficiently.

Also, you may want to try downloading Firefox in case something has hijacked IE.

There are better or equal virus programs out there besides McAffee, try downloading AVG from this site.

Good Luck.

I want to build a pc for my mom for Christmas. I have built a few in the past but it's been a while. She is mainly going to use it to surf the web and store and edit pics. What do you guys suggest as far as MB, CPU, RAM? I think I'll go with Intel, unless you think differently. Ob sound and vid. is OK too I guess. Thanks for the help.

Answer:PC suggestions

get an cheap celeron about 1- 1,5 GHz. That's all she needs. Lower is good as well. about 800MHz would be fine for her needs. U can save some money that way.

About 256MB RAM will be fine.

Mobo:, more expansive generally means more features, better stabilty etc.

Grahpics card: any 32 or 64MB card will be good.

Post ur specs once u have decided wich parts u buy.

U need a faster PC for gaming.

the problem is i turn on the pc and its fine, but within the first 15-20 minutes the pc will crash regardless of what im doing, i could be on a word document, a game, the internet, and it will crash. then i turn it off, then on again and its fine the rest of the time im on it could be an hour, could be all day. its always every other time it crashes, and usually within the first 15-20 minutes, but sometimes longer.

the spec of my pc is: processor: Intel core 2Duo E4500, 2.2 GHz, 2047 MB of RAM, and 32-bit operating system, and i use windows vista home premium.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what may be wrong with my pc it would be greatly appreciated!

hello scott94, and welcome to the forums,

such as do you receive any messages or does the pc just freeze?
do you get a Blue Screen error? if so what does it say?

unfortunately your original post doesn't give enough information. although time based problems are often related to screensaver or power management issues.

if you can post back with some more information I'm sure someone will be able to help

Could well be malware of somesort as many scans may not find what the issue is, but it can also be a bad application you have installed of late, but to rule out malware please follow the below guide of ours:

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

I am currently evaluating an SSL VPN (Web VPN) solution for the company I work for and am looking for suggestions from anyone with experience managing one. We were using a product called SSL-Explorer with a license that was bought a few years ago, however the computer finally died and no usable backups of the appliance are available. The product was bought by Barracuda networks and the continuation of it is now known as Barracuda SSL VPN Vx. I have been evaluating it today and so far so good, I like what I see. Pricing seems a little steep so I am also looking at alternatives such as Citrix Access Gateway VPX which I am currently downloading.

Our primary use of the SSL VPN is to provide an easy way for employees to connect remotely to their desktops or to a terminal server when working out of the office.

Any suggestions on other products I might look at or things I should consider before deciding on which one I will go with?

My computer has slowed down to the point of death. AVG antivirus isn't throwing anything up so I'm convinced it must be malware. I've looked at the suggestions before posting Hijackthis script but no joy. Can anyone help me out?

Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Sorry your post was highlighted by the spamfilter as it had an inline hijackthis log.

One first reason your PC will be slow is that by your Hijackthis log you are running two antivirus applicatiosn as in McAfee and AVG, two Antivirus applications running at once will slow your PC down as they are both trying to scan the same files... you will need to uninstall one of them, if McFee is paid and upto date keep that.

Then to find out if malware is also slowing your PC down please follow the below step by step and attach the requested logs.

Oh goodness, I'm really starting to puss out from using RAID 0 because I realized after formatting, I simply cannot risk losing 3.6 TERABYTES, of data with very low chances of recovery.

I hit up newegg today and looked for some SATA III solid state drives and there are some that have about over a dollar-per-gigabyte price ratio. Oy.

So now, I'm thinking I could budget out some more dollars for a SSD since the hard drives I'm planning to get are now at 130ish dollars. But, I do need and want that uber amount of storage while hybriding a SSD. The thing is though that I don't want to be changing file directories to different drives every time the hard drives run low on space.

I'm wondering if the two hard drives can be combined in Windows into one recognized drive, so the SSD is the C drive and the uber storage is the D drive, or U for Uber storage. I've heard that in Xp, two hard drives can be converted into dynamic disks and then they can be combine. And, if some USB flash drives are in use, they can be converted as well. OR, can all of the drives be converted into dynamic drives and made into the C drive? Or am I pushing my luck?

Is this a good plan? Thanksgiving!

Answer:I needs suggestions...

Yes, it is considered as a safe method nowadays to create a RAID 0 array.

If you don't have a problem with your computer, using a program like HjT isn't exactly appropriate.

Let's see this:

Click Start.

In the search bar, type MSCONFIG and hit Enter. Click the "Startup" tab.

Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

I've been happily using Zone Alarm's free firewall program for my WIN98 computer, but now have been informed that it will no longer be providing support for WIN98. Does this mean my firewall no longer works? Or if it does will it be enough? Should I switch? If so, what free firewall might you recommend for a WIN98 program?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Suggestions please?

Zonealarm will still work BUT you will not have anymore update you know new versions.....

But you can still use it for years.....

Question: any suggestions

I am running xp home on with an older desktop, I recently wiped all the users and left one with an administrator password. On a reboot, it asks for the administrator info, then takes me to a screen with xp professional and asks me for a password where the user name is "Owner".  Now I can get into the computer using safe mode and Ive tried to tweak the user settings, but they are only for administrator, not for xp pro.    To make things worse, I tried to to wipe my hard drive and start over, Its probably time for that anyway, When I put in the xp home disk, it starts the process, I accept it and then it tells me it cant read the disk and to put a windows disk in the drive, Ive tried 2 xp home disk and a newer vista disk, trying to wipe the hard drive. My question is... Is there any other way to format my hard drive? my disks arent working.

Answer:any suggestions

Are you doing it right? Booting from the CDs?There should be no problem formatting the drive via the Windows Setup.

Question: any suggestions?

my wonderful darling wife took the liberty of deleting some programs off of our cpu while i was at work. well i am not sure exactly how she did it, she removed them or deleted them, but they are still listed in add/remove programs. when i try to remove them it gives me the following error:

any suggestions as to how i can remove them? i do not have any of the install discs from these programs, so i cannot reinstall and then uninstall correctly. does major geeks have a program specifically for this type of program? thanks for all of your help.- dredd

Answer:any suggestions?

If you have spybot search and destroy you can go to Mode--Advanced (Mode is located at the top). Then click on tools on the side and click on uninstall info. This will allow you to delete unwanted things on the uninstall window. If you don't have spybot you can download it here:

Another one that will also get rid of the Registry entries left over from that program is RegCleaner. You can get regcleaner here:

I am running a windows 2000 server and I am getting a virus alert from the server about six times a day. The message reads:

"Message from server to server on date & time

The file g:\program files\exchsrvr\mailroot\vsil\queue\ntfs.2a9cc88601.eml is infected with w32/netsky.p.eml!exe virus. Unable to clean the file using the current scan engine 4.4.00 dat version 4.0.4652."

I update the dat files on the server daily but I am still recieving these messages. I am currently running mcafee 4.5 on the server. Do I need a better virus scanner?

Question: Suggestions on Ram

I am getting a Abit KL8 SLI Mobo with two 7600GTs in SLI and I wanted to get 2gig of DDR in Dual Channel, but im not sure which ones I should get. I am completely new to SLI and I am noticing that you have to have a lot of parts that are just made for SLI. Like th PSU and the Mobo and stuff. So I was wondering, is their a difference in ram when it comes to SLI. The two sticks I was looking into were these: Ram Compare

Is there really a big difference between the two in performance? And do any of you have any suggestions on what I should get?
My Build will be:

Audigy 2 ZS Platnium
2x250g 7200 RPM HDD 8mb Cache
2xeVGA 7600GT SLI
2x1gig DDR 400 Dual Channel
Abit KN8 SLI
DVD Dual Layer Drive
CD+-RW Drive
Generic Floppy Drive
AMD 4600+ X2 Manchester

Hi, My computer is aging, and has gradulally got slower than my patientce. Its an athlonxp2000+, 768mb ram, nvidia fx5200 128mb.I use it mainly for web browsing, emails, college work, webdesign (including a small ammount of web graphics work) and tv on demand. What i would like is a new computer, I quite fancy a netbook, but was wondering about their performance, it must be better than my current computer. At home it would be plugged in to my monitor and other perphials. Would a net book give me the sort of performance that i need? What are they equivelant to with relation to my current set-up? Any other ideas?

Answer:Suggestions for a new P.C

"Any other ideas?"1) Clean out the hard drive, stop unnecessary programs running all the time, get a speedier anti-virus program, clean the registry, defrag the hard drive.2) Put Linux on it, some of the lightweight versions would make it fly again.3) I don't think you'll find a netbook with high enough performance to be really significantly better than you have now. A regular laptop perhaps, but not a netbook.

I am very new to digital photography, and I am trying to get decent photos of the night sky, but I have noticed that along with noisy photos it seems that I have hot pixels everywhere (at least I think so) now I know my camera is a beginner camera but I dont think it should be this bad, I bought the camera at the beginning of July used, its is a Nikon D3100 with less than 2500 actuation's. anyway here is a lens cap photo converted from raw/nef to jpg. Any ideas or suggestions as to what is going on or how to fix?

I should add I downloaded pixelfixer but it didnt seem to think there where any hot pixels, or i did something wrong. Here is the original exif data and the link to the photo which was converted to jpg. Thanks for any help

exif.date_time=2014:08:06 01:46:18;
exif.date_time_original=2014:08:06 01:46:18;

exif.exposure_time=25/1 sec;

Question: MS App Suggestions

I need to find a way to export data from Outlook into SPSS via Excel or Access. Each e-mail message has 24 data points. When I export the Outlook folder into excel, it puts all the data into one cell, rather than 24 seperate cells. Are there any relatively simple solutions to this problem?

Answer:MS App Suggestions

bare with me why I try and understand what you are saying...

You get an Email with 24 parts of data? You want to export that Email into Excel/access?

If that is the case there are a few suggestions, the best being if you have control on how the data is Emailed, you might be able to just email it as a Excel formort. Outlook can load Excel spreedsheets inside outlook. (if I remember correctly, never had to do that, but rather sure it does).

If that is not the case, you can try exporting with Comma delimited, and have it use Paragrahs as the factor for where the comma's go. This would mean the Data in the Email would have to be in a format of: Each paragraph being one set of data.

Think that made since... Good luck

Question: Suggestions

I need to rid myself of this 6600 GT. Any ideas?

Also, I need some new heatsink for my Pentium IV 3GHz because the beast heats up quick when I start clocking it a bit - any ideas?

Intel 3GHz 530J LGA775 800MHzFSB 1MB L2-Cache
Asus P5GD2 Deluxe
2gigs OCZ Gold PC-5400, 1gig Infineon DDR2-SD
200GB Maxtor 6L200R0 Hard-Drive 7200RPM
XFX 6600 GT 128MB
Sound Blaster Audigy 2

Any suggestions on improvements of any kind are greatly appreciated. I'm using a 630W PSU (nonamer), with self-sleeved cables. All my cables are IDE tubes, so the airflow is fairly generous. I've got a chassis fan, and a side window fan, and a pci slot double fan cooling my video card. NZXT Trinity case.

Supply any ideas you have regarding ANY aspect of the machine. I'm open for anything!
