xp theme missing... classic only

Question: xp theme missing... classic only

I was an idiot and acquired a pretty nasty virus a week ago. I thought i had gotten rid of it. Now I'm thinking maybe not... my XP theme is missing, and only classic exists. Also, I can't seem to hear sound out of any videos/audio that I play (although I can still hear the windows alerts). My friend said the "classic" theme is weaker than the xp theme, so I probably still have some remnants of the virus. Here's my hijackthis log. Preferred Solution: xp theme missing... classic only

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

Hello. I've recently reformatted my computer and since then I've been having this rather annoying problem. When I select classic theme from the personalization menu then try to switch back to my custom theme, the only thing that changes is the color scheme but nothing else after the "Please Wait" dialog. Restarting the computer is the only way to make custom themes work again.

I've tried running the troubleshooter for aero when it happens but it doesn't find any issues.

Some of my games require transparency/aero to be completely off to reduce input delay/other issues. And since I close/open the game sometimes several times, I like to keep it on classic as long as I'm in my gaming session.

Side question: Does anyone know how to make custom log on screen background stick? Mine likes to revert back to default randomly.

Answer:Can't change back to custom theme from classic theme w/o restarting

Are you trying to use a 3rd party custom theme?

For the logon screen I used Option 1 of this tutorial Log On Screen - Change it have never reverted back.

Hello!
I've recently installed an XP theme for my Vista. When I restarted the computer, it changed into the Windows Classic Theme, and it won't let me get the Vista theme back.
I can't even find the Vista theme on my computer. When I try to add a new theme, it wouldn't let me.
If it helps, my computer is Windows Vista Home Premium, upgraded to Service Pack 1, and 32-bit operating system.

hi i'm new to the forum just need a few help with things,
I had this problem for a while now and i am getting physically sick of changing back to the original theme then having to switch it off and then it would be switched back to the old classic theme which you and me know looks a bit old and bland i hope there are some computer technicians on because i haven't found anyone who could fix this problem yet.

I thought it would of been third party applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking" so i got rid of McAfee and spy bot temporary just to taste it out but nothing happen.

system restore is out of the picture too because its been awhile I've been couping with this now and didn't really think it was a big deal until now

I have the window vista home premium please can anyone help i will be so grateful.

All I can suggest is to selectively disable items in your startup and see what's affecting itI'd use a startup manager for that purpose instead of msconfighttp://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html

Dell laptop with Win8 preinstalled.

There is no "Classic" theme in "Personalization" window.
High contrast themes are ghastly, not suitable for prolonged corporate use.

I have looked at "Get more themes on line" but none without wallpaper.
I prefer plain coloured screen.

Any ideas .. thank you

Answer:Classic theme in Win 8.0 ?

You can get different styles from a good many sites that will transform your win 8 to whatever you want (though I have yet to see a classic style). I have several I have downloaded that will transform 8 to win 7, Vista, XP, etc. There are a great many out there just go into what ever search engine you use and type in "Skinning Windows 8," and you will get a huge amount of stuff to choice from. . .Good Luck.

Oh, BTW, "Welcome to the Eight Forums.". . .

If you are looking for a Start Menu vs. Start Screen there are several excellent apps out there that will do what you want. One of the best and probably the most used is "Classic Shell" which allows you to use Win 8 like it was any of the older flavors of Windows.

Hello,

I installed a UX theme manager today, but after I opened it, the theme changed to classic and I cannot, despite some "heroic googling" efforts find a solution to this problem. So I am turning to the experts!
Can you help me revert my theme from classic back to the default xp theme? I am at a loss!

Thanks so much for your time,

Nate

Answer:XP Theme Help? Theme went to Classic???

Many applications create a system restore point right before they are installed.

1. Back up all of your can't lose files
2. Complete a system restore to a time before you installed the theme manager.
3. Run windows and AV updates.

Microsoft link on using system restore.

Is there any info about the grey classic Windows theme still being included with Windows 8?
And are there any public numbers on how many people actually use it, like there were for the usage of the start menu?

On my notebook, which has not the best screen with its really huge pixels and low resolution (1368x768 at 15"), Aero just doesn't look that good and takes up too much space.

Um... Are you a resolution freak? I am running the same resolution at 15.6" and it seems fine...
But in regards to what you said, I can't find the "Windows Classic" Theme on my installation. Just has Windows Basic, and the High Contrast options... So I'd say they're trying to leave legacy behind (at least for personal installations), it's still there on server versions.

When I go to themes and I select windows classic, I get an error message: "Theme could not load, unspecified error", then it shows the location of the theme file, which is: C:/windows/resources/themes/windows classic.theme

What is the problem here?
Also, when I go into display properties and select the appearance tab, and under the windows and buttons scroll down, it says the visual styles could not be loaded because the file failed to load. It only does it with the classic, everything else works.

I would like to run Vista in the Classic theme, but its horribly glitchy and slow since they removed GDI 2D acceleration from WDDM. Is it possible to hack GDI acceleration back in? What I really like is the Classic theme with Aero effects (zooming windows, vsynced, etc.)

Hi, I use Windows 7 and would like to upgrade to Windows 10, but in Windows 10 there is no gray classic theme known from Windows 98, which is still supported on Windows 7. I found some tutorials how to do it on Windows 8 and 10, but none of those were functional. Is there any way to have the good old Windows classic theme on Windows 10?

Thanks.

Answer:Windows 10 - classic theme

There are some dark themes here:
5 Dark Themes for Windows 10
Worth a web search.

Bear in mind so much has changed (and keeps changing with major builds) old theme packages are not applicable.

Stardock's Windows Blinds is said to be Win 10 compatible, but whether it's compatible with the latest build from early August I don't know.

Is there any way to get the Classic Theme for WinX? I right clicked the desktop and looked under personalize for themes but all I found was high contrast themes.

Answer:Classic Windows Theme

You have to exit out of those, you are stuck in "High Contrast". I got stuck in there once under Windows 8, it's under the "Ease of Access" center in 7 and 8, check your Control Panel and you can exit High Contrast from there. When you have High Contrast turned on, it shuts off all other Theming or Personalization settings.

Hi !

Is it possible to get the real Windows classic theme back with the good old colours ?

I have downloaded all kinds of "Classic themes for Windows 8.1", but still the colours are not as they used to be. Ugly, plain, eye disturbing colours. Same colour for taskbar and software title bar. Impossible to distinguish text on taskbar because some is black, some is white. For some older programs title bar itmes and windows buttons are invisible (see attached screenshot of Girder).

"Classic themes" imitate the old colours, but they are plain, typical Windows 8.1. What's more annoying, because these themes are high contrast themes, some details become invisible. For example apps from Google Apps button (like Youtube, Maps, Search etc.).
I even tried to import a classic theme from Windows 7, but no results with the colours.

Furthermore it would be nice to have the taskbar hidden when a program is maximized, but not with autohide option, because it becomes annoying when the mouse gets too close to the bottom of the page.

I hoped Windows 10 would solve the colour problems, but it didn't !

Thanks

However, once I'm logged in, any window I open has a "dark blue gradient color." How do I get all windows to have the same "bight blue-white color"?

Thanks!

For example (see attached JPG) , this is the theme I want all the time, not just for log-in purposes.

Answer:How to Get the Classic XP theme but not so dark?

When you use Windows Classic style you can adjust the colors however you like.

Right-click on the Desktop > Properties > Appearance > Advanced, when you click on Color > Other, you can use the basic colors or define custom colors.

I am on XP Home Edition and have a variation on the many "themes" problems already covered: I want to run the XP (Luna) theme, which I can set successfully, then shut down.

On restarting, the XP theme is still in place, but after 5 minutes I get a "Please Wait" window and the theme reverts to Classic.

Accepting this, I shut down, leaving the Classic theme in place: but every time I restart I still get the "Please Wait" window after 5 minutes.

I have done some checking, and Services/Themes is set to Auto and is running, My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings has both "use visual styles on windows and buttons" and "use common tasks in folders" are checked. I have applied kellys-korner-xp reg edits from lines 214 and 271 and nothing changes.

Is there a known virus which runs something after 5 minutes which perhaps turns off Themes temporarily, or does something which results in the system thinking I am changing themes?

Since a support bloke installed a new CPU and an extra drive, AND made it known that he hates the Classic theme and thinks I should be using the XP theme, I'm completely unable - through any normal means, that is - to retain the Classic theme.
On bootup, it shows Classic on the desktop but has the XP theme's menu bar right across the bottom; as well, if I open IE8, all the menus are black blodges.
Yes, I know I can change back to full Classic within Settings/Display: what I'm after is to return to having the Classic theme as my default, and not have to go through this silly routine every morning.
It's been ascertained that there's something RIB telling the system to present the XP theme (only partially successfully) - presumably put there by my former support bloke - and I wonder if anyone knows what this might be...?

Answer:Solved: DON'T want XP theme, but can't keep Classic

Always happens to me: as soon as I post a problem, having browsed for several thousand years seeking the answer but not finding it, I have another browse and immediately find it. Sighh...
(1) Go into Services; (2) Go down to Themes; (3) Turn this service off; (4) Open IE8 to see if this has fixed the black-splodged menu bars, and if it has... (5) Change setting of Themes from automatic to manual.
Bob is then your father's brother.

Thanks.

I'm trying to create a smooth Windows Classic theme.

The highlights and shadows around the theme are irritating me and I would like to get rid of them.

In the picture below I highlighted what I'm talking about.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these?

I have attempted to locate the setting in Window Color and Appearance, but have been unsuccessful.

Answer:Customizing Windows 7 Classic Theme

A quick reply as I might not be able to get into this deeper. It is possible to do so, there is a variable for the global highlight color, which is stored in the theme file (%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Windows\Resources\Ease of Access Themes\classic.theme). I am looking at things right now, I'll post again if it's working.
edit: the theme system is more sophisticated than I thought, see the next post (also, properties not listed in the theme file fall back to their standards)

Well, idk if this is a virus or what. I dont think it is. My theme keeps reverting back to classic. When i go to prop. and switch it back, my other themes are deleted. exp. Windows xp. So i downloaded StyleXP to change themes. This helps once in a while but when it does, windows classic stays. How do i fix this?

P.s. I hope i posted right :( if not, please tell me how to fix it then.

Answer:Theme keeps reverting back to W Classic

Check if Windows is set to 'best performance':

Start > Run > Control Panel (switch to claissic view) > System > Advanced > Performance. if it is set to best performance, then set it to best appearance.

I'm having an annoying issue with my windows XP (SP3). Whenever I try to switch back to the Windows Classic theme, it doesn't work right -- it displays, but in the "big font" just like Luna. It displays properly if I turn on the guest account and use that, but it doesn't work on my regular account.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like if I turn on Classic:

Hello!

I recently was getting tired of the old Windows XP Theme, so I decided to go find some nice ones. I found one on deviantArt, and the theme wouldn't work! I did a little research, and found out that I needed to patch a system file called uxtheme.dll. I used a program called VistaGlazz to do it, and it all went well and right now I'm using the theme I wanted. Well, one problem. When my computer starts up, the theme has reverted back to Windows Classic. I of course have to go back and apply the theme again, but that's going to be very annoying if I have to do that on EVERY startup. It never did this when I used a few other themes, such as the Zune theme and the Royal Noir themes.

Help please?

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP3.

Constant explorer.exe freezes and timeouts.
Unable to open uninstall programs tab.

I attempted to use Ccleaner to run a registry fix this didn't help the problem, I attempted to uninstall what I thought was the network problem culprit (sendori)
Revouninstaller can't even open because the msi.dll error.

Any logs needed to help speed this process? Thanks guys.

It depends how far you want to go down - you can still use the Aero UI and have it look a lot like Windows Classic, just by turning off the options you don't want. (i.e., you can turn off transparency, turn off a lot of the visual effects), but I don't know how "Classic" you can easily get things to look as far as the start menu and all of that...

Hi,
I recently installed the full version of windows 7 professional onto my computer. I have a Geforce 6600 plugged into my Panasonic Viera 720p TV through the use of a DVI-HDMI cable. I encounter some graphical issues at certain events when I use my system. First off, my login screen shows alot of random lines that are not supposed to be there, and when i type my password it the text box's contents are very pixely and messed up.

This problem also appears in other places. When trying to do administrative actions this error happens when the administrative prompt splash screen comes up. The buttons and surrounding space on the screen are very messed up, and if i move the prompt window it makes it worse. Though once i leave the prompt my screen goes back to working perfectly.

The last place I have gotten this error to reproduce at was when I switched my theme to the classic "old" windows theme. When running this theme almost everything gets messed up. Text on screen becomes illegible and if i move something the screen becomes even more messed up.

I'd like to point out, if I didn't already, that this only happens when windows is not running Aero, or when an overlay replaces Aero (like the admin prompt). I assume that the login screen does not run Aero, and that is also why it appears wrong.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I find it very odd that I have graphics issues when displaying non-Aero items. Unfortunately I cannot post a screencap becaus... Read more

I have been wondering why my theme is stuck on Windows Classic and can't go anywhere else. I have this cool theme called "Blue Nano" that used to make the taskbar have a black design (color) and the start menu with the cool design also. (You can search for it on Google). Well, ever since I had Windows Genuine Notifications with me, the themes have not been working. I can switch to a theme, but the taskbar remains the same. I have deleted WGN since then, but the theme is still stuck. How do I solve this?

Answer:Why Is XP PC Stuck with Windows Classic theme

If you only have 318MB RAM, you should be running as lean as possible, not adding more garbage. The more complex the theme, the more resources it will use. Same goes for wallpaper & screensavers. At 318MB, you have nothing to spare. I suggest you forget about "Blue Nano" & start trimming the fat. Start by turning off the Indexing Service & using MSCONFIG to disable unnecessary startup apps. If you're running Norton or McAfee, dump it & replace with Microsoft Security Essentials (it's free), AVG or AVAST. Go to Performance settings > Visual Options & untick ALL boxes on the list except the last 3. That's a start.

Hello,

I'm still using XP and I always use the classic style.
Recently, I've been thinking about switching to Vista 64 someday, but I've got a question about the classic theme:

I know that the theme is available, but does it give me complete access to all the functions available? I think I heard somewhere that some things won't work properly because Vista's GUI just differs very much from the older ones, and so there are functions that are not accessible anymore.

Is that true? Can the use of the classic theme really narrow my set of functionalities?

Thanks for your answers!

Answer:Classic Theme - works completely?

What funtions are you going to try and access?
I have found vista has more functionality than XP.
It is just looking in the right place.

Since the other day my theme was switched to the classic theme, and there is no option for the XP theme anymore. I right clicked the desktop, went to Properties, Appearance, Windows and buttons, and the Windows Classic style is the only one availble. This just happened out of random and I've searched google and this forum for answers but there is nothing. I fix the problem by going to Start, Run, services.msc, right clicking Themes, properties, and the service status seems to be stopped. I click start and it works, but it just switches back to classic theme when I reboot. The startup type is Automatic, and the path to executable is C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. Have any of you had a similar problem or know a way to fix this one?

I seem to have trouble running the Windows Classic Theme. Everytime I do it I get random error messages while I am on the net. And when I restart the computer my sound seems to not work sometimes and a error message says Generic Host process for Win32 Services something ruther. But now since I have changed back the the Windows XP Theme it seems just fine. I am wanting it on Windows Classic because it takes less resources and I can run more things. Do you have any ideas of how to fix this because it would really help me. Oh by the way I researched the problem and found a hotfix and installed it but I am still receiving the errors and stuff.

Answer:Running Windows Classic Theme.

Do you have SP2 and all subsequent updates including the updates for Internet Explorer?

Also - please give us the exact error code that you get when using Internet Explorer. "Generic Host process for Win32 Services something ruther" is not a valid, descriptive Windows error code and doesn't tell us what's causing the errror or how to even look where to fix it.

It looks like Mozilla have resumed their quest to make Firefox totally irrelevant.

Mozilla announced a couple of days ago that it plans to make Firefox support only WebExtensions add-ons by the end of 2017.

While that seems far far away right now, it is almost certain that things won't be ready by then. What I mean by that is that WebExtensions capabilities won't match those of Firefox's current system.

While popular add-ons like NoScript will likely be ported over thanks to Mozilla working with developers actively on implementing missing API features, the same cannot be said for other add-ons.

Hello,

I have an odd problem in Windows Vista SP1. I have a 2Ghz Core2Duo Processor, 2GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT, 2 x 160GB Hard Drives in a RAID0 configuration.

Whenever I play videos that has fast moving scenes, the top 1/3rd of the screen flickers slightly if I'm using the Windows Classic theme. I have no problem playing the same video using the Vista theme. I can't figure out why video has performance issues in the Windows Classic theme.

Answer:Taskbar font Win7 classic.theme

3D Objects are parts of explorer and as such don't have fonts associated with them. You can try the following to see if anything there helps...

Right-click the desktop and select Personalize then Window Colour. Now click Advanced appearance settings. You can then select each element from the dropdown list until you find the setting that best matches what you're after.

This only happens in firefox but when i change the theme to win 7 or any other then it dosent happens.

Ok...
The title speaks for itsef, but here's my story
I let my friend on my comp recently (I'll never do THAT again) and the next day I get on
I see that my theme was changed to Windows Classic. I say "Ok, I'll just change it back."
Not that easy, all my themes have been locked except for the classic one. Then I think back
and notice that I didn't hear my comp's welcome music either. I looked in my tray and noticed
that my audio has been disabled and I can't go in it. Then I tried to see what the people of the net
had to say about it. But it turned out that my internet has been cut (wired/wireless).
Who ever made this one HAD TO have a bad day or somethin. Does anyone have a solution to my dilema?
I would really appreciate the help.

EDIT: Btw, I'm using Windows 7 HP, 64 Bit, AMD Phenom II X4 810 Quad Core Processor
Any other info needed? Let me know.

Answer:Windows Classic theme, no internet, and no audio

Have you rebooted? I know it seems trivial, but sometimes trying the obvious first works. It almost sounds like you are in Safe Mode... What is safe mode? In Safe Mode, all visual effects are disabled (i.e. you can't change themes), and only basic drivers are loaded (sound, Wi-Fi, etc. are usually disabled).

How do I fix this so that Office 2003 programs don't use the classic theme?

ps. on this machine there is no uxtheme patches or any other non microsoft stuff. the themes installed are the default ones which came with windows (silver, olive green, blue)

Answer:Office 2003 reverts to classic theme

Are you running Default Blue and not Royale? I know that the .msstyle file must be named "Luna" for Office 2003 to pick up themes. It does work to rename Royale to Luna, and that picks up the theme also. Works with the Zune theme as well, looks like crap though. They must be launched by double clicking them, they are not selectable though the Themes properties.

Hello,

This is my first post on this thread, so I apologize if this is the wrong place!

My mom has asked me to look at her laptop, which she believe's has a virus. From what she has said, she was trying to stream the NBA on her laptop and wound up downloading some programs in order to stream the NBA. If she has a virus, this is deffinately where it came from. It sounds like the perfect scam to get people to download a virus as well.

I have fixed 2 viruses in the past, however it was easier because the first one was on my laptop (The Windows Vista Anti-Virus) tricked me. I knew where it came from though, so I was able to look up the fixes.

The second one was on a friends and they downloaded a fake (USPS Notification) from their e-mail. With the help of forums I was able to straighten that out as well.

So, I am comfortable navigating my way around computers, but I'm not totally savvy on all the terms and super technical stuff.

Here are the Symptoms on her laptop:

Theme has been from the "Windows 7" theme to the "Classic" theme. When I try to go back in to switch it back to "Windows 7" the option is grayed out and won't let me switch it.

The computer will not let me get on the internet. There is the icon in the lower right screen of the computer that you click on to connect to the internet. That is gone and it is not connecting automatically (like it was set up to do).

Icons have been moved around on her desktop screen.

This is a friend's machine so I don't have details of what he was doing when he noticed this problem. But now windows is displayed in the classic theme and any attempt to change it back to xp theme freezes the computer with the please wait window displayed. Ctl-alt-delete will not even work, must manually turn off machine and reboot. I have tried restoring to an earlier time when things were working and this does return windows to the xp theme but his norton antivirus disappears and nav has been on the machine since day one. So it is either classic windows with everything working or xp windows with no norton av. Norton av was factory installed and he only has the restore cd from compaq which from what I could tell had only one option which was a complete new restore to factory specs, no option of selective repairs. I'm guessing a corrupt windows file but I don't get the connection to nav. Hope this makes sense.

Good day,
with windows 7 when I switch to classic theme, after a while, every windows explorer related window that I try to open, like "Personalize" or Control Panel or windows explorer itself just wont open. It stays in the initiating phase where you can see only the window border and hangs... forever, and it's hard to "end task" too. This causes me troubles when I try to switch to windows basic or aero. But the main problem is not that I can't revert from classic theme, but that I WANT to use classic theme, and have a functional windows OS at the same time.

This has plagued me for years, it's not a virus related issue nor something else. It happens on fresh win install. It's a windows bug. I have never been able to use classic theme because of this. Also I could not find any fix from google at all. There is an official bug thread from microsoft recognising this issue, but they just tell you how to switch from classic theme to something else.

I don't expect a fix for this, but might ass well ask for one, thanks.

Answer:Classic theme and windows explorer problems

Two things come to mind:

1. Do a Recovery to see if you can fix the problem. Just remember if you do a Recovery you may have to reinstall some programs.

2. Restart and go into "Safe Mode - F8" to see if you can change into Aero, or Windows & Basic.

Good Luck and Welcome to the Seven Forums. . .

Hi.

When using Windows Seven with Windows Classic Theme, I don't have any icons outline during drag&drop on the desktop ? The only way for me to see that i'm drag&dropping is the mouse cursor that changes...
Of course, no problem with Aero.

Has anybody a suggestion to correct this ?

Thanks.

Answer:Seven : Drag&Drop problem on Classic Theme

You wont get that graphic effect with a basic theme... this is exclusive to Aero afaik...

Maybe I'm not understanding things.
Mozilla is cleaning out some extension and maybe some plug in's.
I'm not seeing that as a problem.

Thanks for checkin' this thread!

I recently installed StyleXP but I was havin' troubles with it not applying themes to the taskbar so I decided to get rid of it. Now that I've uninstalled it, I'm unable to revert the theme of Windows XP back to the normal Windows XP theme (the blue one with round edges and etc). I've tried just about everything and I have searched the topic to death and nothing has helped. Here's a thread I've used that has a lot tips, but nothing has helped from it: forums.wugnet.com/-Display-problems-updates-ftopict355332.html In addition, I've also used a program called UXTheme Multi-Patcher (Neowin Edition) 2.5.1.exe. Didn't help! I've tried all the registry fixes from the kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm with no avail. I should also mentioned that I reinstalled SP2 and that didn't help either.

Please help me! It's soooooo annoying! lol I appriciate you taking your time. Sorry if I'm vague.

It's sad because I've had this issue before; however, I cannot remember how I fixed it!

Answer:Windows Classic theme stuck! Nothing has worked! Please help!

Well, I solved the problem after crashing windows by uninstalling SP2. Uninstalling SP2 rendered my computer unable to boot up so had to insert my system disk and do a repair which has fixed the problem. Took awhile, but it's up and running and looking better than ever. I guess I'll just stay away from SP2 for awhile longer!

Thanks for all the help!

It took no more than 2 seconds (HDD) for Pale Moon (27) to start. It is still a work in progress, limping along because of the lack of prioritized support from the addon community. Mozilla and Firefox with the larger user base get first dibs.

We'll just have to move the goalposts on Google's inevitable browser conquest.

Answer:taskbar stays in windows classic after importing a new theme

well, first thing that comes to mind; maybe you are attempting to change the theme using a custom one. the custom themes require you to patch windows with either UXtender, or UXtheme (depending on your windows version). there are other patches.

Hello all.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to change the windows 7 start button icon. I want to change it from the windows xp logo to a win98 windows logo.

I don't use the Windows 7 Aero theme. I use the Windows classic theme, and I would like to change icon on the start menu to the Windows 98 style windows logo rather than the Windows XP logo. Here is a picture for reference.

The little windows XP log I want to go...

Thank you,

Hi, my name?s Nick and I like the new Firefox Australis user interface. There, I?ve said it. However, it seems an awful lot of you hate the new look unveiled in Firefox 29, which is why you?ll want to install the Classic Theme Restorer 1.1.8 add-on immediately.

As its title suggests, Classic Theme Restorer pretty much dumps everything Australis introduces, except the new menu accessible via the hamburger-like button on the main Firefox toolbar. In its place is the Firefox you know and love, complete with Firefox button in Windows.
If that?s all you want from Classic Theme Restorer, your job is done. But the add-on does a lot more than that -- access its settings via Firefox?s Options menu, and you can fine-tune the changes it makes, plus customize Firefox in other ways too.

You can customize the appearance of your tabs, for example, restoring the Australis look or choosing an alternative square or curved look. You can also tweak the size and placement of tabs, plus pick a different color scheme from the Custom colors tab.

You can also remove or restore the Firefox button in Windows from here, plus customize it with your own choice of color. There are other tweaks for customizing the general UI here too. Switch to the two Special tabs and you?ll find other customization options, letting you not just banish (or fine-tune) Australis, but remove or amend other aspects of the user interface you may find annoying too.

Where multiple choices are to be made, you?l... Read more

Answer:Ditch the Firefox Australis look with Classic Theme Restorer

It is a nice extension but does not fix all the problems caused by Firefox Australis, I previous used MozBackup to backup my profile before upgrading Firefox I'm so glad that I did this because Firefox Australis v.29.0 completely destroyed my profile settings and none of my full themes would work.

I used the backup to create a new profile for Cyberfox and still have my profile settings.

Good News Cyberfox and Pale Moon will not include Australis UI (Firefox v.29.0) in their updated releases. Waterfox is still undecided.

Pale Moon developer says "Australis is considered unacceptable, and will not be aimed for - quite the opposite." http://www.palemoon.org/faq.shtml#Will_Fir...n_work_together

Cyberfox developer says "Ok so first things first Australis:
Will not be in cyberfox, The current UI your using now in cyberfox is going to stay."

https://8pecxstudios.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=330
Australis UI (Firefox v.29.0) removed a lot of UI features and doesn't support full themes.
It makes Firefox appear as it is trying to be a Google Chrome look alike. A terrible move for Mozilla.

Enjoy!!

My Dell Inspiron 9200 (laptop) with WinXP Pro cannot connect to a known-good internet connection via Cat5 cable, but is able to connect wirelessly.

There is no malware on-board, and no hardware conflicts in Device Manager. The Local Area Connection 2 says "Limited Connectivity" (Broadcom 440x Integrated Controller)

Also, for some reason, the XP theme is stuck in "Classic". I've over-written the "Luna" Theme with a good one, and have selected it to no effect. The "Themes" Service is running normally in Administrative Tools. The option to change the "Windows and buttons" from "Windows Classic Style" is limited to ONLY Windows Classic Style.

Any help fixing either of these problems would be appreciated.

I have a dell studio xps 13. I absolutely love the performance that comes with it, but it tends to sacrifice in the battery life area to meet those high marks. I use the laptop primary for school and travel, and use my high powered custom built desktop for everything else.

We all know that Aero glass guzzles battery juice, so I naturally always kept my computer on Windows classic theme. Now, I can remember from my childhood the like of Windows 98, but in today's world, it just seems a little bit disappointing. In combination with other techniques, such a frequent defrags, unnecessary process and service killing, and turning the resolution down to the minimum, I have managed to get the battery life from the rated 3 hours to about 6 hours.

My question is, if I switched to Windows 7 Basic instead of Windows 7 classic, would it really make a noticeable difference in my battery life. Also, how would I go about changing the title bars and taskbar from that disgusting shade of blue to a much more tasteful black? I know I can get the effect by going to Aero and just turning off the transparency, but that still is wasting resources with the window preview feature. Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks

So after getting back from work today I restarted my desktop (which was working perfectly fine up until this point), and when it booted into windows 7 the theme was in windows classic. Furthermore I cannot:
connect to the internet
have sound
run Symantec Endpoint Protection
Uninstall programs
Create/Use system restore points.

I have ran everything suggested in the malware removal guide to no avail, it's tricky. Only things I have used it for in the past week or so are reddit, matlab, league of legends, skype and porn (my girlfriend is in Thailand)

Worst case scenario I can just format and reinstall, I do that about every year anyways to keep a clean OS, and I haven't reformatted this since it was built in Nov 09

Answer:Disabled internet, no volume, windows classic theme

Please put ComboFix directly on your desktop!! It needs to be run from there.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

* Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
* Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
* If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
* Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):

1.There are many different ways to adding themes, I suggest you try Style XP

2.In order for UX to work you have to patch it and restart before you put a theme.

So i suggest patching it again, restarting your computer then adding the theme.

Hello, Im having a huge problem with my PC. I downloaded a newer version of my graphics card driver, and when it completed, I restarted my computer. When I logged back in, the theme was set to Windows Classic and wouldn't change back. It has no internet connection, and it seems that it am missing an option for internet connections altogether. It is also saying that "the audio service is not running" and I cant hear anything. Lastly, it seems to be processing/loading things very slowly, and sometimes even freezes, making me restart.

I would say that is sounds like your WEI score may have updated at that time, or a video driver may have been installed through Windows Update.

How do I enable it so that when I drag items on my desktop I see the icons as opposed to it just being invisible. Why would MS remove this from Win 7 ?

Answer:Icons invisible while dragging (with windows classic theme)

I believe this is normal behavior when using the classic theme. It is by design, who knows why. You can confirm this setting:

Right click on Computer> Select properties> On the left side click on Advanced system settings>
Performance box> Settings> Visual Effects tab, make sure Show window contents while dragging is checked

Hi everyone, I have just registered to submit a question and find some help. Hopefully I can find a solution here.

I recently turned on my computer to find that I had lost my Vista themes. It had automatically chosen to display a Windows classic theme instead. I tried going into the display options to change the appearence, but when choosing the Windows Vista Basic color scheme, the example box shows nothing but a blank black box [example screenshot]. When trying to apply it, nothing changes.

I have also tried selecting the Windows Vista theme from the theme menu, but it just shows the Windows Classic windows and bars instead of Vista/Aero [example screenshot].

It is possible that I accidentally disabled a program in the "services" menu (where you disable programs from starting up) while trying to turn off my VNC server. This is the last thing I remember doing thre night before I had this problem.

Thanks for any help that I can get. I am willing to do anything to get help with this.

Hi dddarrenccc, Welcome to Bleeping Computer. This is a total shot in the dark, but, perhaps you have the performance options set to not show visual styles on windows and buttons.Go to Control Panel-> System-> Advanced tab-> Performance settings-> then scroll down to find a box with "Use visual styles on windows and buttons". If this box is checked, then the problem isn't my first guess, if unchecked, check it, hit apply, then ok. If it does not automatically change then go to change it as you would or through display and appearance. I hope this has helped you in some way.

This computer had some spyware and I removed all I could through services, msconfig, ad-aware, spybot, cwshredder. But, when I try to change the desktop wallpaper, nothing happens. And, when I try to apply the classic windows theme, it says "unable to load Windows classic.theme..." I looked in Add/Remove windows components and didn't see anything. Any suggestions?Click to expand...

Does it look like or say that Windows is missing the files in order to apply this theme? Try an repair install so that the system can replace all the bad files or you can try to run System Restore to the last known working date.

I have the windows classic theme turned on; and I?ve noticed a peculiarity of it.

Items become invisible while being dragged, and then reappear when ?dropped?.

Is there a way to make it so items are visible when drug, when using windows classic theme?

Thanks.

Answer:Icons invisible while dragging (with windows classic theme)

Or...could just use Aero...

My pc running windows 7 64bit is currently not connecting to the internet, I can't hear any sound, and it's stuck on the windows classic theme. On September 26, I used windows update to update a few things (can't remember what they were) then the computer restarted. After rebooting and logging in, I ran CCleaner to clean the file system to possibly remove any junk files left behind by the updates. I then ran the registry cleaner in CCleaner and it came up with a few errors, so I allowed the program to fix them. I also changed a few things in services.msc because I knew a few programs were operating that I didn't need (can't remember these either). I then continued to do an essay. I shut the computer off and went to bed. The next morning, my mom tried using the computer but it couldn't access the internet and the theme had changed to the windows classic one. I have no idea what happened, but if I were to guess it might have something to do with my changes in services.msc... I've searched around the internet for any solutions but have found none. The only thread I've found that is exactly the same problem as mine is one I found on this site: www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/443155/no-sound-no-internet-windows-classic/
I've tried using MBAM and Windows Repair All in One as suggested on the second page of that thread, since those steps were what worked for the original poster. However, they did not work for me, so I am now creating my own thread as a means to finding a solution.... Read more

My boss' desktop is broken again. Usually I can handle it myself with a couple startup tweaks and a MWB/SysClean scan but whatever he's got this time has dug its claws in pretty hard.

A couple days ago I was able to fix his internet connectivity issues with the the winsock tcp tool but that doesn't consistently work anymore (managed to get connection once today, out of ~half dozen reboots). When there was internet, he was getting a pretty frequent search redirect issue and occasional pop up. Also, the startup which yielded internet access also had the standard windows XP toolbar appearance, rather than the Windows Classic look it has whenever connectivity is blocked, when i look in the themes dropdown there are no other options. Network connection icon gets stuck acquiring ip address, never times out, repair throws an immediate "unable to acquire ip" error.

Hello,

I was doing some work on my computer today when suddenly it restarted and came up with a blue screen with some writing on it. This happens every so often but it's never caused this problem before, usually it just restarts and is fine.

After the blue screen the computer restarted itself but it took alot longer then normal to startup, when it had finally started everything it was in windows classic theme. I tried to change it back to normal XP theme by right clicking the desktop > properties and going to appearance but classic theme is the only option there.

I've scanned my computer with all the stuff i've got, i've cleared all the temp stuff and defragged my HD but it's still in classic theme and it still takes a really long time to startup.

Why did this happen? Can i fix it? If so how?

Thanks.

Answer:Stuck in Classic theme + computer really slow to start up

Hi,

Since about 3 days now my pc (windows 7 ultimate x64) has stopped working..
It will bootup normally, but when i log in to my account, the theme will be classic, the internet connection has gone walkabout and the computer won't run or open up any programs, like call of duty.. To make matters worse, system recovery wont work, says something about volume shadow copy, and if i turn that on, all my restore points are gone (i haven't made a backup yet). Not even malwarebytes has been able to fix the problem, so either this is a really evil virus or it's something else, but it totally ruined my PC

please, i really need some help with this one!!

Answer:Windows boots up in classic theme, internet wont work

I've been having the exact same problems, and I have yet to find a solution anywhere. If anyone has any possible fixes, they would be nice.

Greetings. When hovering over a taskbar item such as for an open internet browser, I get a pop-up that is ~3x the length of the taskbar button (the properties of which are set to never combine & with labels showing). At the right side of these popups there is a red X.

If I have a few Windows Explorer windows open, if I hover over one explorer item on the taskbar the popup will display all explorer items in a stacked manner (one on top of the other), again with the option to close out each item via a red X.

Is there any way to turn this feature off?

Also, when items are selected in the taskbar, the button changes to the same color as I am using for text. What window color setting (if any) do I change to alter the color active buttons display in?

The computer was perfectly fine yesterday; normal speed and using the default Windows 7 aero theme (save the background obviously).

Since today the computer is suddenly slow from the start-up already; When it comes to the "configuring windows" screen it takes about a minute instead of the second to get to the login screen. Then when I log in, everything is in the classic theme. A warning also pop-ups during start-up.

Here's a screenshot where you see the task bar in classic theme while it should be aero theme. You also see there the warning on start-up. It basically says it can't connect with a Windows server, namely the System Event Notification Service.
http://i50.tinypic.com/2a8nfyc.jpg

After start-up other problems are occurring.
First of all, parts of the computer has become slow. The most notable is right-clicking on the desktop (and only the desktop!), it will take ages before the right-click menu is loaded.
Secondly, I can not change the theme, was my initial thought to do. All themes except the classic themes are greyed out and not selectable.
Thirdly, the antivirus, Avira Antivir, starts up disabled, and whatever I try, I can not enable it. This started to happen after a few start-ups.

So yeah, quite bothersome problems. I have tried the following solutions:
- Scan my computer with Avira. I've scanned every single file my computer has, but my computer didn't find any viruses. This scan was done before Avira started acting weird.
- System recovery. I f... Read more

Hello, I have a big problem with my themes. My themes in Windows vista are all copies of "Windows Vista" And "Windows Classic" themes that are completely blank in the box where the picture should be. When I select ANY theme, it is in the Windows 98 theme, and I have tried stopping the Themes and starting it, setting it to automatic, but none of those work. Can someone please help?

Answer:Windows Vista Home Edition Stuck in 98 Classic Theme

Vista prevents changing from classic theme when you are low on resources. You'd need to give some more information.

Is your system running slow of late?

Is your c: drive full? How big is it? How much RAM do you have (control panel/system)?

Check control panel > system >advanced system settings> advanced tab > performance settings and check what windows is set to.

Then click advanced tab (still in performance settings) and look how large your virtual memory/paging file is.

You might need to clean house a bit. Run disk cleanup (start/all programs/accessories/system tools). Uninstall programs you don't want or use (contol panel/programs-programs and features/uninstall a program).

If you haven't defragged for a while do that when you get a chance (same location as disk cleanup)

I've tried this tutorial, and I still can't remove the explorer toolbar. I use a customized windows classic theme, and I think this might be the reason its not working for me. So, I found another thread with this post and I'm thinking of trying to edit the shell32.dll and see if this method will remove the explorer toolbar.

Before I do this, I was wondering if anyone knew if this method will remove the explorer toolbar on a customized windows classic theme. I have my customized windows classic theme to resemble the Windows 95/98 grey theme. Does anyone know if this method works on a customized classic theme?

Answer:Can shell32.dll remove explorer toolbar using custom classic theme?

I have finally removed this explorer toolbar. I just followed the instructions from that thread in my first post and edited the shell32.dll. It is now gone. w00t!

So if anyone else has trouble removing that toolbar using that shellstyle.dll from the tutorial from my first post, just edit the shell32.dll instead and it will remove it.

I have been having this problem with all of the custom themes I have installed. First of all, my standard Aero themes work (nature, landscape, etc), but when I go to place a custom theme that I download from DeviantArt and such, it puts everything into classic mode. My notification bar icons all turn to a horrible quality. All of this started happening to me when I had to update SP1. If anyone else is having the same problem, or if anyone knows a fix feel free to pitch in.

I have already ran a system restore, the problem still persists.

Thanks,

But when I whent into personelize the Vista Aero theme wasn't there.

Here are some pictures of what I am talking about:

My computer at work recently started having.. issues to say the least.

It will randomly change the theme to windows classic, then pop up an error message that reads "generic host process for win32 services," and then it will disconnect me from our internal server.

This thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/virus-oth...0-internet-blocked-theme-reverts-windows.html

Seems to be the exact same problem but it has been closed with no responses.

I have run malwarebytes several times, have run TrendMicro (our company anti virus) several times, did a system restore to 4 different dates between 3 days prior to a month prior.

After a while I will begin to be redirected to advertisements if I open a search result in Google.

The problem is remedied on reboot for a short time. I tried logging on to my computer as just the computer locally without logging on to our company domain and this took care of the problem for about 3 hours then the theme reverted to classic and I had the advertisements again. However, my internet connection is not disconnect.

This problem is not occurring on any of the other 6 computers at my office.

Any idea? The only answers I have found all reference doing a system restore but they do not have the network disconnection problem. Please let me know what logs I can pull and how to pull them in order to help diagnose the problem.

Running Windows 7 SP1, re-installed just a couple of days ago.
I have UxStyle Core installed, along with a few custom themes. Default themes work perfectly, but once I switch back to any custom theme, it forces me back to Classic. The themes worked before, but today they started acting up.
This also happened on my old installation, and I tried everything to solve it - sadly, not even sfc /scannow helped. That is partially the reason why I reinstalled my OS.

A factor might also be that I'm using TeamViewer a lot, because the themes started malfunctioning while I was accessing my computer through it.

Answer:Solved: Unable to start custom theme, resets to classic

Nevermind, I reinstalled UxStyle, problem fixed itself. Somehow, on my last installation, that didn't work...

Hi, i'm kinda desperate atm. My laptop has this annoying habit of reverting back to windows standard/classic theme after almost every restart. I said almost as after 2/3 and sometimes even more, my aero theme correctly appeared. After another restart right after that, the problem occurs all over again.

The search function in the start menu and windows explorer also 'failed to initialize' when in the said windows standard/classic mode.

I figured that this might have something to do with my user profile as I have the 'User Profile Service service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded' problem once very recently but I've fixed it using the tutorial in this forum. The windows standard/classic theme problem had been on for quite a while back, before the user profile problem.

Before all this happened, I've had this 'C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable...' problem. I fixed that by copying all my files and folders in my C:\Users\[Username] folder to the location above and replacing all the files including desktop.ini. It is only after this that I've had the windows standard/classic theme problem.

I couldn't help but wonder if somehow my user profile has got something to do with it? Windows system restore could not fix this problem.

By the way, I'm using a modified aero theme at the moment, using TuneUp Utilities 2009 on a Vista Home Premium 32bit Acer 5920G laptop.

I would deeply appreciate any help for this poor s... Read more

It happens recently (about a week ago)
Suddenly my windows xp theme reverts back to Classic Style in about 2-3 seconds before it reverts back to normal theme.
I thought it's not something important and my winamp is still playing the sounds like usual, so i didnt notice it until i open zoomplayer. The video runs fine but i cant hear the audio. After that i close my winamp, and when i re-open it back and try to play a song, it gives me "Bad Sound Driver".
After i restarted the computer, the sound is back. But it will happen again in 20-40 minutes after that.

This link also shows the same problem that i have but to view the answer, i need to pay and i dont have any credit card.

My Spec :
Windows XP Professional, SP 3 (5.1.2600)
Mobo : Gigabyte 945GCM-S2L
Realtek High Definition Audio [Onboard - Azalia Driver]
Update : I managed to start back the Window Audio Services in Administrative Tools but the problem will occur back after that so it's a loop.

Hi, so a few days ago, I using my laptop until the battery ran out. After I turned it back on, I noticed that the theme was changed to Windows Classic. I also noticed that my laptop would not connect to the internet at all (wired/wireless). After doing a little bit of research, I found out that this might have been caused by malware/a rootkit/TDSS. I did use the TDSSKiller, thinking that I was going to disable it, but even if I found the threats, it didn't show any change. *Note* I did delete the infected drivers, and now that I read some the instructions of what to do, I probably should have just posted a log here. I did do a scan again, and the TDSSKiller found no threats. I tried to use some other malware anti-virus (Malware Bytes), but it would not let me. For now, I'm not going to even touch the computer until I get some help. Here is my DDS Log. Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
