My Windows XP suddenly went to the old XP

Question: My Windows XP suddenly went to the old XP

Computer has been acting really weird lately. I shut down my computer then restarted it, and having XP the bar where 'Start' is located should be blue and what not.. But now it's like I'm running a 95 with the old plain grey. Should look like this: http://www.itsnotmagic.net/tutorials/displ...ges/desktop.pngBut it looks like this: http://ru.proit.com.ua/soft/img/desktops_h.../windows_95.gif****THESE PICTURES ARE NOT MY ACTUAL DESKTOP.**Operating in Safe Mode right now, having trouble connecting to the net. Preferred Solution: My Windows XP suddenly went to the old XP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I usually like to leave my computer on overnight. So I go offline, disable my wireless, and put on a video playlist in full screen to help me sleep. Anyway, today I woke up and saw the Windows Media Player no longer full screen, and the wireless switch was actually turned on. This is strange because I know I turned wireless off and I frequently check my system with Malwarebytes.

What could this be? Did someone snoop in my computer? Thanks in advance for the support.

Hello, and thank you for reading this.

As of just today, for some weird reason, my computer has just started to hiccup and freeze out of nowhere, and it's more prominent with any program that uses the internet (i.e. Firefox, Steam, etc), but it freezes up the entire computer along with the program.

This is especially aggravating as just yesterday, my computer was working absolutely fine with no hitches or sudden slow downs, but by today, it just starts to act this way, despite me doing anything to the computer at the time.  I have also ran a complete virus scan twice to no avail, and I tried using System Restore, only for it to fail.

I'm currently running under Windows Vista Home Premium x64. I've attached a HijackThis Log, if anyone can read that.
 HijackThis Log.txt   13.05KB
  2 downloads

I would hope that this doesn't turn out to be a hardware issue, so if this is something of a software issue, I would hope I could fix this, as I really need my computer as it has important school files and such.

Answer:Computer suddenly slows down suddenly and sporadically for minutes

Hi Twistervtx and welcome to BC.Sorry for the delay in response to your thread.HijackThis doesn't enumerate 64bit systems very well, but i can see some problems in the report.P2P Warning Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking ( Frostwire, Ares, uTorrent etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true.P2P programmes form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme. Many of the programmes come bundled with other unwanted programmes, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use. When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.Having a P2P program running at startup is even more dangerous! You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be t... Answer:[Resolved] why are web sites suddenly huge?Suddenly

Hi dunkinrick. Welcome to TSG. What browser version are you running? If Internet Explorer, you can give this a try: Open up IE, on the Toolbar up top click on on View>Text Size> and make sure your size is set to medium or whatever size you want to use to view webpages. If you don't have IE or this does not solve your problem, let us know and we'll go from there.

Hello friends!

I make a bunch of videos for YT, and ever so often, I want to make a quick video on WMM. Yesterday, I was working on a project (with a bunch of large files) when I split a clip. The first part of the clip turned black in the thumbnail section and wouldn't play in the preview. I've had this happen before, so I closed the program and reopened it but now the entire timeline was gray and neither the video would play in preview, nor the audio (an overlaid WAV) would play. So, I restarted my computer. Nothing. For 12 hours, NOTHING. So, today I decided to make sure I had all the correct updates and drivers, but when I downloaded my first update and tried to open the program it wouldn't let me and I got a new message:

"Sorry, Movie Maker can't start. Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements before trying to start the Movie Maker again, and then try to update the drivers for your video card if Movie Maker still doesn't start."

I had just updated all of the drivers, so I decided to uninstall and re-install the program. I remember an issue with this when I first downloaded it so I went on to this forum to be sure I was downloading the correct program but still NOTHING!

I am fairly computer savvy and am literally at a loss! I can edit my videos in a different program, but this particular video was about ten minutes from being complete, after working for about two hours and I would be pissed to have to start from scratch... Read more

Hi, I've been running on a T520 4239-CTO for a little over a year now without issue.  I've been getting lots of random bsod and services crashing in the last few days; even Windows 7 cannot validate itself anymore. I ran all the hardware checks in the provided Lenovo utilities and it all seems to pass.  I didn't trust this so I manually checked the smart values on the hard disk and noticed around 2400+ reallocated sectors so I decided to replace the hard disk. It should be noted that there are no viruses/malware on this machine.  After receiving the new hard disk I did a factory restore using the dvd backups I made when I received the machine.  Upon booting the new factory install on the new disk I'm still getting the same random bsod and issues with Windows 7 not being able to validate. I notice that everytime I boot now on the newly restored os that the "Microsoft Software Protection Platform" service has issues and cannot start.  I started doing some updates using the Thinkvantage tools and they're crashing too. This machine is currently on pass 4 of memtest without any errors so far. I've replaced the hard drive and from the looks of things so far the ram seems fine.  Where do I go from here?

Hoping someone can help. A problem showed up today that hasn't been an issue before. After I enter my Winows 7 password I am taken to the 'Welcome' screen as normal but that is as far as I get and the little wheel icon just keeps spinning for ever more.
The problem doesn't show up in 'Safe Mode' and I can use that mode fine.
Two things that may or may not have been an issue here but the problem only appeared after the following -

My Kaspersky Internet Security was due for renewal so I paid for the update and downloaded and kicked off the new installation file. Part of the installation required a reboot of the PC.
After the reboot I was able to login to Win 7 at that point but when the desktop appeared a message immediately came up saying that the Firewall (I'm assuming it was the Win 7 Firewall but didn't pay full attention) detected a program it didn't like - EEventmanager.exe, which transpires is an Event Manager program for my Epson XP750 printer/scanner. I have had this printer for nearly 6 months and this firewall message has never appeared before. As I don't use that facility anyway I unchecked the box, telling the firewall to ignore it. At that point I got the spinning status wheel which wouldn't stop and I couldn't even open Task Manager so I restarted the PC in safe mode via the power button. Thinking it was the Epson Event Manager program causing the problem I uninstalled it in Control Panel. I rebooted ag... Read more

Long story short: two computers were having home network problems (both run Windows XP Professional) so in desperation I clicked the "Create Network ID" button in the Computer Name tab in (what I assume was) the System Properties box. (I can't be sure that was the name of the box because I have no other computers running XP Pro and I can't even find that button in this installation of XP Home.) I did this on both computers simultaneously at which point both prompted me to restart. I did, and now neither computer can log in. The IDs are both the same and I'm using the same password (unless clicking that button changes your keyboard to a Dvorak layout...) but the error message tells me the domain could be the problem. So I click the Options button on the lower right of the login dialog, and all it does is hides or reveals the Shut Down button, so I have no options other than OK, Cancel, and Shut Down, none of which are helpful in the least. How can I log in again?

Hello forumers on this forum. My computer has suddenly run very slow and will only function as it did before in safe mode. I am getting loads of windows 7 crashes recently. Can't relate it to any new program installs or particular programs crashing with each other.

I have attached my latest minidump

I have reseated the RAM since i thought it might have been a RAM problem.

Tried memory diagnositics and Scan disk and both tests were ok nothing faulty according to them.

Hope you can tell me what is my problem. Hopefully it is a software one.

Thanks

Hi

So upon turning on my machine today, which is usually fine, always kept updated etc, I have an error "reboot and select proper boot device"

Attached is an image of diskpart, which seems to suggest all volumes are "healthy", but windows start up repair can't find any fixes, and no devices can be found when looking for system restore points when booting from a usb. I would like to avoid wiping the drive if at all possible, but can't find a way to perform an "in place upgrade" without being able to boot first. This is one of a few drives on my machine, which also have applications installed on them, if that is useful info. Also it is a Samsung evo 240 ssd

Many thanks

Hello,

Since a couple of days my windows 7 show me a popup with a warning about not being genuine. I have my laptop (Sony) since 8 months or so, and the copy of windows is the OEM license that was installed on the laptop when I bought it (it was new).

I ran the diagnostic tool and this is the report that I got:

Hey everyone, I'll give a quick rundown of my computer specs, and I'll tell you what's going on.

First of all, i5 - 3570K CPU (OCed at 4.2Ghz)
MSI motherboard (cannot recall the actual model, but I can figure it out if necessary)
8GB RAM
120 GB SSD (Windows installed here)
1TB HDD
2x GTX 670 2gb
850W PSU

Ok, here's what's going on. I got on my PC tonight to copy a couple of my roommate's DVDs onto my computer, and I downloaded a couple well known programs to do so (Any DVD and clone DVD). Programs that gave me no known issues in the past.

Suddenly, I was playing a game on my PC, and it kept freezing, ultimately my computer BSOD'ed. It did this a couple times, and was unstable for a few more boots. This is currently the longest it has stayed up since (The first BSOD was about a half hour ago).

I'm currently running a scan on my PC for viruses, and it hasn't found anything yet.

Here's the really weird thing though, my temperature monitor gadgets are saying my CPU temps are currently 105C. My liquid cooling loop never goes over 50C, so I'm pretty sure something is bugged up in the BIOS, or the CPU is dieing. I'm also thinking the SSD may have corrupted hence all the blue screens, but that wouldn't explain the whacky temperatures. I loaded the BIOS and it froze. I tried booting into safe mode and it froze. But it doesn't seem to have any issues loading up into regular mode. Except right now it is a LOT slower than normal. Something is bogging it... Last night after some modem problems which may be coincidental Windows 7 PRO (OEM) suddenly de-activated. It now will not re-activate either by the normal method or by telephone. No hardware has been changed and to my knowledge no new software was installed although some of course may have been updated. I was simply attempting to browse the web. It came with a new build and has been fine since November 2011. Checking the error logs I find these related messages.

Just a few mins ago my windows 7 would suddenly freeze up and i get the not responding error on all my applications, for like 1 min and then resumes for just a few seconds ( fast forwarding everything ) and becomes unresponsive again, i havent used the system event logs since vista, maybe anyone can give me a hand on where/how to look ?

Answer:Windows 7 suddenly became unresponsive

Is it still happening? Are you still on that computer? Did you reboot since then?

edit: as for the event viewer, since it was some sort of global freezing, hard to know where it came from, could be hardware error (video card/ram/hard drive), software conflict, some sort of attack, etc,), so as for where to look at, I'd focus on the time it happened and look pretty much everywhere , starting with administrative events and windows logs I guess

that probably doesn't help much, I just wish I had more details on the problem

Hello. On my Macbook Pro, I installed Windows 7 a while back. For some reason, Windows suddenly began running very slowly. It worked flawlessly for a few months, but things like games are running very very very slowly. They used to run on around 100+ fps, now they drop down to the 5-20 area. Anybody know the issue? I know it is the OS because when I play the same game on my MacOSX, it runs at that 100+ FPS mark. Please help....

Ok, so about a 3 weeks ago, my computer, a Dell Dimension E510 with Windows XP began running realllly slow. On and off the internet. For example. I'll click start, 30 secounds later the start menu appears, then I'll click word, and it will take another minute for it to pop up and be ready, then I'll type a sentence, and then afterwards I'll watch the letters appear slowly one by one.
The situation is the same when im on internet explorer. I already used a restore point, but that didnt work. It's still very laggy. "PC Docter" runs every morning and usually "Fixes" 20 to 30 "potentially harmful" adwares or cookies. Still nothing has improved.

There is plenty of free space on my hard drive according to a defrag, and I've removed any programs that looked suspicious, so I think it's some virus that has evaded any detection.

Also, sometime when my computer freezes up so bad that I just decide to restart it, the program "Session Controller Dlcc" is asked to "End Now". Could that be a virus?

Can anyone tell me what I should try? or reccomend any free programs I could download? The way my computer is running is unberable! HELP!

I recently have run into a number of problems that I've tried to solve on my own, but now I'm at my wit's end. Here is what I've done so far.
windows built in calculator wouldn't run (this app can't open check the Microsoft store).sfc /scannow - got corrupted file errors (unable to fix)ran DISM restorehealth with a mounted usb iso, got remote procedure call failedtried to restore with restore point. I had absolutely created a restore when the last issue arose and was fixed but it's not there now.ran reset, failed with "no changes were made"

I have run DISM successfully in the past so I don't think it's operator error. If anyone is familiar with problems like this I could use some help. I've been running Windows 10 since December, and occasionally getting an error which up till now I could fix with either sfc or dism. Now I'm stuck.

Answer:Windows suddenly has failures I can't fix

Have you tested your hard drive with the manufacture diagnostic tool? It sounds like you could be dropping sectors.

Hello! I've just started configuring a new pc. After relocating the Users folder from the SSD to the HDD drive successfully (following the tutorial in this forum), i wanted to change the name of the user folder.

I activated my starting account, deleted the dummy one for the process and also activated the admin account via cmd("net user administrator /active:yes"). Then, I signed out of my user account to enter the Admin one and proceeded to change the folder name.

Result: Administrator user isn't showing up, and my user account has started asking for a password, so i have no option but entering a password. Blank password won't let me in.

Note i wasn't using any password, nor do i have set up any MS live account or given my phone number. Is there any way to solving this besides reinstalling Windows overwriting the system drive?

Just recently, my super fast notebook struggles to do anything. It fails to load any pages in a browser before it shows 'not responding' and / or crashes the browser completely.  I've uninstalled the Chrome browser and tried again and the same thing happens. The same behaviour in the Edge browser where I also cleared all the data. I recently installed Adobe Photoshop and wondered if that could be the problem so I went to the control panel to uninstall it.... but the control panel freezes and so far I've been unable to uninstall it. I'm now having to use a work laptop for personal use as the notebook which was purchased in January is simply useless, slow and freezes a lot when trying to do tasks that it recently used to zip through with ease. Can anyone help? Has there been a problem with a Windows 10 automatic update recently?  thank you

I have an older workstation, bought with Vista, and upgraded to Win7 Ultimate. Upgrade was bought via the MS store several years ago (I occasionally get coupons from work to buy stuff). I don't use this box all that much but the other day I went to patch it and it told me that my copy wasn't genuine. The error I get after having it try to is that some files are damaged or missing. Not really interested in rebuilding this box from scratch though I guess that's an option. Below is the output from MGADiag. I'm guessing that my issue is this "Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\drivers\spsys.sys". I ran SFC which did not find any integrity violations. Am I down to copying this file over from elsewhere? Is this file unique per system or to a version of Windows 7? I have access to other systems but not to win7 32bit. My upgrade media is buried somewhere so may not be easily found.

Thanks!
Tim

Well, this is a really irritating problem. I started my computer up this morning, and after logging in to Windows, everything is obviously not working as it should.

Things are sluggish right out of the gate, with my desktop taking forever to get itself together and get all the icons shown, and then even longer for Fences to kick in and organize it all. The fact that Fences works at all is strange though, as out of all the startup programs I have checked, only GeForce Experience shows up in the taskbar. Everything else, like Realtek and THXStudio are nowhere to be found and aren't even started up 30 minutes into using the computer.

To make things stranger, I have two CD Drives showing up in Computer (D and E). I checked Event Log, and there's a giant avalanche of Errors under System that are all the same, and just say "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0."

Windows searches and opening things are awfully slow/unresponsive (er, kind of..it seems to pick up after a bit or something. I just clicked through folders in my C drive and it was instantly responsive, and Adobe Audition opened in less than 10 seconds so I don't get it). For example, my music player MediaMonkey works fine, but its not picking up my music library anymore and just says Reading files...((EDIT: after typing this it finally loaded my files, but damn it took a while). It's weird, though; things are still snappy and quick, just...not. the Windows 8 bar on the bottom is obv... Read more

UPDATE: After leaving my computer on overnight, all programs that were supposed to appear during startup have finally turned on, and it is now correctly reading and recognizing my DVDRW Drive, when before it listed two unknown and unusable ones. It just took a really, really, really long time. Hopefully that'll at least help pinpoint the problem a bit more.

I used my retail Windows 8 Pro key to activate Windows 8.1 RTM

Then used my Windows Media Center to add features and get Windoes Media Center

I used my laptop for like 5 days

now suddenly I see the build number mentioned on the desktop, so I checked my activation status and it said windows is not activated

I clicked Activate Now, and it shows my product key ending in: GBFNG-2X3TC-8R27F-RMKYB-JK7QT

that is a default installation key and not an actual product key

so I hit the Enter key button and enter my Windows 8 key again, that says :

"this key cannot be used to activate this edition of Windows"

I used the WMC key, that also says "This key didn't work try another key"

I don't know how on earth did this happen

could this be because I tried to use the Windows Setup box yesterday?

what can I do to resolve this without formatting again?

Trying to change the product manually in CMD also didn't work:

Answer:Windows suddenly not activated! help

Did you install anything prior to this happening? If so you might want to try a restore point from before the software install.

You also might want to Right-Click "My Computer" and choose "Manage". Check out the "Event Viewer". Check out the Application and especially the System logs. Post any errors that sound like they might be related to your problem.

Hi,

On March 1, 2010 I purchased a key for Windows 7 Home 64. Built the computer, jumped through all the hoops and have received all the updates Windows has had for it. Got the last update last night. No problems. This afternoon, my wallpaper went black and in the corner of my screen it says "This copy of Windows is not genuine".
I went to the site it sent me to to verify the validity. It had me download the Windows Activation Update.exe. Ran that and it said that they key was not genuine and that the key had been blocked. When it got to the page that said to enter a Windows key, there was no place to put said key, but it did give me an offer to purchase it for $109.
I am trying to figure out if the problem is Windows and the key really isn't valid, or if I have acquired a virus. Any help would be appreciated. Below is my HijackThis log.
Peace and blessings,

That's it, my windows 7 sometimes suddenly crashes, no blue screen (BSOD?) it just freezes.
I've read the instructions and I attach here the perfom report html files and the Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2 data. However I've cracked my head trying to know where the dmp file is (i don't have a Minidump foler in my Windows folder) so someone please help me with that.
The reason of the crashes are not determined yet, sometimes watching a movie, sometimes listening music, sometimes playing an rts game. I've done the windows's memory test (basic) and no errors so far.
Pretty happy with windows 7 until this started happening.

All was well for one month and a half until 2 days ago. I turned on my computer, came back 5 minutes later, and I see that my HDD is busy doing something (I don't know what it was doing). It appeared that my system was completely frozen (couldnt do anything) so I did a hard reset...that's where everything went bad, and then worse...Windows refused to load, saying that I was missing a file called "pci.sys"..it worked 1/20 resets but after that it stopped working and kept giving me the same error message..I go to recovery console to try to fixboot, chdksk, and almost everything else possible, but it could not read the drive Windows was on (Windows was installed on my RAID-0 with 2 Raptors)..

This is what Norton Ghost 9.0 said about one of the Raptors when I loaded the Ghost bootup CD and TRIED running some diagnostics tests:

Error #119: partition ends after end of disk
ucEndCylinder (18078) must be less than 9039.
Disk Geometry error(s) detected on this drive. (POPUP)

it seems that the partition tables on one of the Raptors in the RAID-0 config screwed up THUS screwing up everything..SO i take off the RAID-0 config, format each drive, and reinstall Windows XP on the Raptor that had the aformentioned error above. It installed fine, but on my next reboot, after it says "VERIFYING BLAH BLAH", it gives me an unreadable error message in weird symbols. This leads me to believe that the Raptor is partically dead and dying...but I can't be sure unt... Read more

Answer:Suddenly I can't load Windows again...

Wish I could help but I can sympathize with you. I tried RAID 0 and like you found it more of a pain than it was worth. Rebuilding the array over and over sucks. It's not very tolerant of hard resets and lockups. After the third time around I gave up and went back to a non raid setup. You could try booting from your CD and doing a repair, you will have to load your raid drivers with F6 like you did during the install. I wish you luck.

Answer:Suddenly, Windows 7 is not genuine

The installed Product Key is one that is ONLY valid on machines pre-installed with Windows 7 by the manufacturer.
Your machine was manufactured a year before windows 7 was released, and can NOT support such a Key.

You need to reformat and reinstall using genuine media and Key - or demand a refund from the vendor. (or both!)

Hello everyone,A couple of days ago my power supply fan started making grinding noises, VERY intermitently.  A few days ago the computer froze on me. After 10 minutes I powered it down and it restarted and operated normally.  Night before last I powered down the computer and the next morning when we started it up 1) the power supply fan was 'grinding' again and 2) the computer froze as windows was loading (before the user/password screen popped up).  It continued doing this despite power downs and reboots.  I was able to start it back up in safe mode.  I went into the event viewer and there were a bunch or errors with processes being stopped.  When inquiring on the microsoft site, they (naturally) had no information on these errors.  The CMOS reported the CPU was cool temperature wise.   The voltages appeared to be steady though I dought it would display spikes.  The only odd thing was that the 'system' fans RPM was varrying by as much as 100 rpm's every few seconds. When trying to fix the problem I: Throughly cleaned all dust   Same Problems Removed the floppy drive and the 2 cd-rom's from the system.    Same Problems Attemptd to run a Check Disk on the harddrive but it froze 1/2 way through the 4th step.Heres the kicker.  Today it seems to be running fine.  The event viewer is not showing any errors and the PSU fan is running smoothly although the the RPM's are still varrying. My qu... My computer: pentium 4 2.8GHZ HT, 2GB RAM
Operating system: windows xp media center 2005
programs installed that might be harmfull: utorrent
Problem: my system suddenly reboots (like pressing the restart button in the computer). I have no clue why.

Do you have any ideas/solutions ?

Answer:windows suddenly reboots

Hello caeyal

Turn off automatic rebooting
Right-click My Computer / Properties / Advanced / Startup and Recovery/Settings.
Under System Failure, uncheck the Automatically restart check box
You will then get a BSOD with error message which will help identify the problem.
Please post the whole error message.

Does this happen at any specific time?
Are you doing the same thing each time it reboots?

If I must leave it on for defrag, I usually make sure the internet connection is turned off, but I forgot'

My studio is in the same building with an isp and my connection is by way of wireless router. very fast connection.

This laptop is an Asus, Win 7 home pro, i7 quad core processor, 8gb ram and two 7200rpm hard drives.

It has been lightning fast until today.

I typically run Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom at the same time, switching back and forth.
Also firefox is usually running because I am uploading images to albums on facebook for clients to see as I develop.

Answer:Windows 7 Suddenly Slow

Is Windows running slow or is the internet connection slow?

How does the machine run in Safe Mode?

A hunch:

Click the start orb and type in device manager. When it shows up in the search results, double-click it.

Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section and double-click the first entry. In the Advanced tab, make sure the controller is running in a high-numbered DMA mode and not PIO mode.

If there is another entry in the controllers section, check it as well.

I have Windows XP on my computer, and recently it has been spontaneously freezing up. It doesn't seem to matter whether I am online or offline, but the computer will freeze up every so often for about 30 seconds. This "freezing up" has become more frequent, and I would estimate that it has already frozen 30 or more times today, July 21st. The problem seemed to begin soon after my Internet Service Provider announced emergency maintenance, but I am not sure if that caused it, or if the freezing up is being caused by something entirely different.....Any Suggestions?

Thanks, Gandalf1387

So this seems to have started from another issue I'd been working on  and today my computer suddenly cannot see the main hard drive housing my operating system. The errors I got ranged from MBR failure/broken...to Disk Boot Failure...to failed attempts with two different Windows Repair CDs - one made for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 and the other CD created through System Image Backup on Windows 8.1 64-bit.

The Win 8.1 CD constantly failed to load, only showing a 1. FD 1.44MB System Type-(00) error even though the floppy drive is disabled and disconnected.

The Win XP/Vista/ Win 7 CD loaded however it showed that my machine can't even see the drive containing my operating system despite the fact it shows as being connected in BIOS just fine.

So I have no means to boot and I'm honestly not sure how to fix this much less how it happened...

Got a black screen with a logo on the right bottom stating that I may have been a victim of software counterfeiting and that my copy was not genuine. I downloaded the WGDiag program and here is what is says. Please assist!!! (BTW will a System Restore to a earlier or previous date work?)

Hi, i was playing some Guild Wars 2 a yesterday and after exiting the game a BSOD flashed up. I think after looking a little i found it might of been my drivers (radeon 5770) hadn't been updated in awhile. I tried to download it but my computer was getting a BSOD after 5 minutes. I managed to download the update on the laptop and copied to pc and updated them, however i am still getting the BSOD. It takes a lot longer before it comes up now, up to 1 hour sometimes but it's still there.

I have attached the SF diagnostic tools zip.

Thank you for your help.

Checked cpu/gpu/hd/memory usage - normal. Changed swap size to recommended - no changes. Ran SFC and fixed everything - still as sluggish.
It seems games are running just fine and all, but the general UI and everything else seems so sluggish (the general response time of applications, etc). I don't know what to do. Sometimes even closing the taskbar takes forever (the windows just lingers there until it disappears) which is the general way everything runs now.

Okay. I built this PC myself. It was built around 5 months ago. I installed Windows 7, and it said it was perfectly genuine and everything. I bought this on eBay from a person with 99% Positive feedback and with 2300 stars, so I'm sure it isn't pirated. Now randomly I have a black wallpaper and in the bottom right corner it says Windows 7, Build 7601, This copy of Windows is not genuine. I've scanned the computer fully for viruses with AVG and Malware with Malwarebytes, and found no problems. I also have a report here.

Answer:Windows 7 Suddenly Not Genuine?!

The "00359-233" in the Windows Product ID indicates your copy of Windows is a not-for-resale MSDN version. Whoever sold it to you did so illegally, so you need to contact the seller and demand a refund. I would not accept a replacement key which too may be illegal.

Hi, assuming Windows is ok and no hardware problem I suggest two approaches as your task manager shows nothing untoward:

1. Clean Boot - Perform in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts - Windows 10 Forums
This will help you determine if sthg you have installed is causing the problem

2. Use Shellexview (free, Nirsoft) - download, install
Hide all MS extensions
Disable all others noting the 32 bit option as well if using 64 bit Windows, which now makes this more awkward.

See if there is any improvement (no need to log off/restart).

My computer was about to open After Effects when I got a blue screen. On the very same day I also installed system updates from the Windows updater, including optional ones, then installed more and/or some of the same ones again using Advanced System Care. I didn't reboot in between the use of those two programs, so that might have caused this.

So far I know that everything in the OS drive, except for the recycle bin cache, has been deleted. But I've been able to find what appears to be almost all the files, using data recovery programs on Hiren's Boot CD. But there are probably some files that can't be physically moved on the disk or they won't do their job. So I'm wondering if any of the recovery programs on HBCD are aware of such files and will put them in the appropriate physical location. Or if all the recovered files' physical locations don't change from the time of deletion, at least for ones that don't overlap.

Answer:Windows 7 is Suddenly Deleted

I'm not exactly sure what it is, but it sounds to me like a harddrive lockup. I'm 99% sure this can also cause data loss, so if you have important pictures/documents I'd suggest using another computer until you figure out what the problem is. I could be wrong, but better safe than sorry.

Hi,

I have a problem that hopefully someone can help with. My laptop was working perfectly fine until it froze, and now I cannot boot up.

When I start it up, it goes to a screen with the Advent logo in the middle, and says Press Del to run Setup, Tab to display BIOS Post Message, F11 for Multi-Boot Menu and F8 for Recovery.

After I press F8 it goes to a screen saying

'Reboot and select proper Boot device
Or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key'

The IT person at my mum's school fixed it once (has happened for a second time now) and advised me to press F8 and then do startup + repair? But all that happens when I press F8 is the above.

I have no idea when it comes to this stuff. Any help is hugely appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Windows suddenly not starting

Are there any options listed when you reach the F8 screen?

Also, try pressing Del and see if that brings you to your BIOS. If it does, navigate until you find the section for your harddrive. Let us know if one is listed there.

It sounds like a harddrive failure, but it could be a few things given the current information.

I was just playing an online game and then my computer unexpectedly started to shut itself down to reboot (and install some updates). As soon as I booted back up, my internet connection wasn't working anymore. Other computers in my network are fine, so it's just my computer. I even tried directly connecting to my cable modem. No go. Windows 7 doesn't even see a problem, it shows me as connected: "Currently Connected to: Network, Internet Access" and making it run the connection problems diagnostic shows nothing.

So everything looks like it works, but when I try to connect to the internet using two different browsers and an instant messaging program, I get nothing. Could it be a virus that rebooted me and is now stopping me from getting online? Thanks in advance.

Answer:My windows suddenly stops...

Welcome!

This is certainly a hardware problem. What brand hard drive do you have? I would recommend going to the manufacturer's site and looking for their advanced disk diagnostic tools.

Also, you should probably test your RAM. Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn it to a CD using the Windows ISO-burning tool. Then boot up the CD and run at least 5 passes.

Hope we can get this figured out!

Hey,

I recently purchased a PCMCIA USB card for my Acer Aspire 6530.

After downloading a few drivers and installing the software, not only does the USB card still not work, but Windows 7 now says its not genuine.

This is really starting to aggravate me as for the last 3 months iv been using USB ports that randomly connect and disconnect, and now after getting this card I may have to reinstall again.

Why is Windows 7 now complaining that its not valid!?

I purchased it off a reputable company and it came with its CoA in an undamaged, sealed box.

Thanks,

so i started up my computer today and was met with an Avira warning about some tru/hind (i can't remember the exact name unfortunately) so i hit quarentine, and it starting loading again and then warned me again about the same file so i hit delete. i decided to update Avira and scan things. about half way through scanning the tab bar at the bottom of the screen went to a solid bar with no tabs. after some experimenting i figured out i could use Ctrl+Tab to go to the tabs i had open. i thought i would restart the computer and see where i get. before that i backed up my point of sale program files onto my thumb drive luckily. after the restart i now have no desktop icons or anything. no tab bar, nothing except my desktop background.

so i used Alt+Ctrl+Del to see what processes are running and it is all the regular ones (i pay attention to what is running closely usually). so used the File>New Task to run firefox and it works fine i guess.

my guess is that whatever file i deleted somehow corruptedmy windows files that control the explorer (i am such a newb it isn't funny).

so for now i am going to look up my windows Ctrl and Alt functions to see if i can somehow figure out how to run a scan.

any help would be great, i know this isn't a lot of info, but right now it is all i have got. i am willing to follow any instructions to remedy this.

Thank you

I've got a custom machine running XP service pack 2 which has decided to start locking up randomly and without warning, i can be doing something and fwoom, everything stops responding and my music starts skipping if it is playing. Sometimes it freezes immediately at startup (not since i replaced my RAM) and sometimes it can function fine for upwards of 12 hours without freezing.
I upon one restart i got an error message saying that the system has recovered from a serious error which was most likely caused by faulty ram. I have since replaced my ram and i still encounter the same problem, althought less frequently. I am at a loss, specs are as follows.

EVGA nForce 730a GeForce 8200 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition clocked at 3.3GhZ (i tried resetting the clock speed to the original 3GhZ to no avail)
Galaxy GeForce 9600 GT 1GB Graphics Card
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 Watt PSU
Creative Labs SB X-FI Titanium Fatal1ty Champ Sound Card
Hauppauge WINTV HVR 1600 TV Tuner
Netgear WG311T 108Mbps Wireless Adapter
(formerly) Corsair 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz (2x2048MB)
(presently) 512MB of some DDR2 400MHz RAM that i found on my shelf

Answer:Windows XP suddenly locks up

I've forgotten to mention that i also tried reinstalling the graphics card drivers

Starting without warning about a week ago, windows explorer takes an average of 30 seconds to browse through drives/folders. It doesn't matter what folder, if the folder pane is open or not, or how explorer is accessed; any program I use that needs to open or save a file opens the drives just as slow. Expanding the file tree is just as slow if not slower than opening each folder.

For the past week, I've been trying to find a solution to this problem. I've searched with Avast and Spybot S&D - all clean. I ran check disk on every partition - including my external. I defragged recently.

Killing the process helps, but browsing folders still takes several seconds when explorer is rerun. It seems about 50% of the time memory usage is normal while running explorer, the other 50% of the time physical memory bottoms out. When the latter happens and I open task manager, sometimes explorer shows the memory usage, but usually the numbers only add up to a few hundred Meg of memory being used even though over a Gig of physical memory is in use. I tried a couple other tricks that apparently solved similar problems around the net; deleting/moving "local settings/application data/microsoft/windows" worked the first time, deleting prefetch entry for explorer did nothing.

I logged onto a secondary user account (they're both admin), and for the first few sessions explorer worked great. (Firefox runs faster too, but that might just be it's an emptier prof... Read more

Hey guys,

about a few weeks ago i started seeing my copmuter running soo slow! i have windows 7 and had upgraded to IE 9, which may have been my first mistake. But Everything seems to be running so slow, clicking on a folder to open will take a minute, and windows EXPLORER seems to crash often. I also see the little timer all the time on my mouse. I have to often terminate my programs (via task manager) i do have an antivirus and a few programms running in the background (that i know about) but have had them for a while. I did also run all my spyware, virus, malaware programs to check and they all come back fine. Even the FULL scan which takes some time. I know i could probably wipe the hard drive and start over but thats a last resort. I also have Hijack this and not sure if that will help. I can post my log file if you want. I have tried a clean boot and that helped a little, i "disabled all" things except for windows programs, but it still wasnt perfect.

Thanks for the help!!

Doug

Firstly I apologise for not doing as told in the "READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support" as I am unable to do so which I will explain why later on...

Okay it all started when somehow my internet wasn't working, thinking there was some spy/malware in my computer, I ran Lavasoft ad-aware SE personal and Symantec Antivirus and did full scans on both softwares.

Then out of the blue my internet returned (like after an hour) and found out it was most likely my internet provider's problem. Thus I stopped the checks but i made sure I deleted any stuff the 2 programmes found...after that, my computer was like SUPER laggy till the point I had to reboot it...

After the reboot, my computer took an amazing 15 over minutes to start up. Showing my computer's background wallpaper for a good 10 minutes...And after it had fully booted up (see the icons and all) I found out I had no internet (says there is no or little connectivity) at all!

Also long before this incident happened, I had installed zonealarm but everytime i click on the icon (or even go to my programme files to open it) it just willn't open!

I followed the step 0: Preliminary House Cleaning & Setup, and removed any junk I found. Next I went to do Start > Run > type msconfig and pressed ok...the window popped up and then suddenly disappeared! I have tried it mutiple times, it will still close by itself. Thus I could not ensure that i have selected normal boot-up.

Answer:Windows Suddenly running very slow!

Did you uninstall ZoneAlarm since it was not working anyway? If not then uninstall it.
By the way did you only install the free firewall or did you install the full security suite that must be downloaded just to get the free firewall. You have to be careful when you download and install this. If you did not tell it to only install the firewall, you would get the full security suite and that would be bad if you already have Symantec installed.

Can you download onto another PC and burn to CD, floppy, or flashdrive. If so, then do the below which are from the READ ME.

Download GetRunKey.Zip and ShowNew.Zip from the below links and extract all files from both ZIP files into a folder of their own. You can extract both ZIP files into the same folder. Like C:\MGTools While these tools will run from your Desktop, we strongly recommend that you DO NOT extract them to your Desktop. Please install them where recommended. Do not run the scans yet!!!
Using GetRunKey
Using ShowNew

Locate the getrunkey.bat file and double click on it to run it. It will create a file named runkeys.txt in the root of drive C: (C:\runkeys.txt) DO NOT attach any other file. The log is named runkeys.txt. We do not need any of the other 20 or so temp files that are created. They will all be deleted when you terminate GetRunKey by closing the notepad window. This log will also popup in a notepad window which your can just close. Upload the runkeys.txt file here as an attachment when you come back to ... Read more

After installing a bunch of updates (among which the infamous KB3004394) early this week, I started getting the 'windows not genuine' message (my copy is 100% legal). I run the KB3024777 update which is supposed to fix things, but I'm still getting the 'windows not genuine' message. Any ideas?

Here is the MGADiag output:

Answer:Windows suddenly not genuine (KB3004394 ??)

Maybe a stupid question but, did you restart your PC after installing the update?

If that doesn't work, try uninstalling the KB3024777 update and reinstalling it. Then reboot.

Ensure KB3004394 is not installed.

hi people,

The windows GWX icon suddenly disappaered from my taskbar when i open windows update it does say "Windows 10 upgrade reserved" that icon worked fine until now and it's annoying all i can find in regards to the issue cause is this error message in the windows logs

Error message: GWX Main: App failed to start hresult: The Data is Invalid.

my laptop is full up2date including the required updates for that icon to work (KB3035583 and KB2976978)

I know about the *.cmd scripts circulating on the internet but it does not help and if it does it takes way to long personally i'm thinking there is something wrong with parts of windows update because everytime i run that troubleshooter it finds and corrects problems not normal i would say ....

Answer:Windows GWX icon suddenly disappaered

Have you "cleaned" your system tray maybe? Or you can check in Task Manager to see if it's still running. Also check the links in my signature if it's not running.

I have a Lenovo y50 and it used to boot in 12 seconds, but recently started to take over 30 seconds to boot. I've had this laptop for around a week now. It happened ever since I reinstalled my nvidia driver. Im not sure if its just a coincidence that it happened at the time I reinstalled it. I made sure all traces of the driver were gone before reinstalling it. The loading circle in the beginning of the boot used to move smoothly but now it visibly lags and moves slowly. I've tried the "Clean up my PC" option and it still has the problem. Here is the event log:Link

Edit:
Alright seems like i fixed the problem. I disabled fast boot and shut off the computer and then turned it on again(not restart). Then I enabled fast boot and now it boots at the time it did before. Very strange lol. Now it boots even faster, in around 10 seconds as opposed to 12, but its probably because of all the tips I was using to lower boot time that wasn't really solving the main issue lol.

Edit2:
Alright the fix from before only worked the first couple of boots and it just went to taking a long time to boot again. I recently revisited the problem and found out it was the hiberfil.sys that was somehow causing the problem. By turning it off and back on again in cmd, it would boot fast again, but only for the first or first couple boots. So i wrote a batch script to automatically reset the hiberfil and used task scheduler to run it when I log in. Works like a charm

Answer:Windows 8.1 boot up suddenly longer

What problem prompted you to reinstall the driver after only having the laptop for a week? The current driver for this card is 337.88 issued May 26, 2014. Is this what you have.

What I think to have caused the problem is in this previous thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/1052878-solved-iconcache-db-missing.html

You guys asked me to make a new thread, so.

Anyway, after doing that last fix and booting the computer the next day, I got an error saying I may be a victim of software counterfitting, followed by a black wallpaper with a not genuine message at the bottom right. I need to get it working again so I can get updates, and I've lost my Windows 7 Home Premium key which makes this all the more difficult to fix with normal tech support from Microsoft.

I'm pretty sure since it was caused by that registry file (I do believe so) that you guys would know best how to undo this.
