Firefox stopped working, GMER makes my computer shut down, mcafee doesn't complete scans

Preferred Solution: Firefox stopped working, GMER makes my computer shut down, mcafee doesn't complete scans

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an asus netbook PC with XP home. Firefox does not go to the intended URL when I click on a link, and also the "back" button does not go to the previous URL.
I ran some of the assessment tools (otl, dds, mbam, gmer) in anticipation of receiving help. I did generate reports from all of these tools except gmer.
Running gmer causes problems.

* The first time it ran it appeared to complete but the PC became unresponsive and I was not able to save the log file. The only warning that I saw (that I remember seeing) was in a sequence of lines that all reported copies of the MBR. The last two entries in the list said something like "possible rootkit behavior" or something like that.
* The second time I ran GMER the screen saver kicked in, when I logged in again I got the "windows encountered and error ..... would you like to send a report".
* The third time I ran GMER I kept moving the mouse to prevent the screen saver from activating, and the computer screen changed to a background color with text, then rebooted. I didn't notice it quickly enough to read to screen.

Do you think some evil has crept into the PC?

Thanx,
Drew

My browser has been hijacked, redirecting me to random pages when clicking a link from Google, and none of my Microsoft Office programs will open. I tried running various anti-spyware programs to no avail. When I tried to run the dds scan, it didn't do anything, and when I ran the gmer scan, it crashed and wouldn't let me reopen it...giving me the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Download and Run RKill

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (Thanks to Grinler of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them.
Rkill.exe
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr

Once it is downloaded, double-click on the rkill.com in order to automatically try to stop any processes associated with rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next steps.

If you get a message rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. The message is just a fake warning by some rogue programs when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. The trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this should allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate the rogue processes. Continue to try running Rkill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to pr... Read more

Please help me. I think my computer has a virus or multiple ones. I went through the 5 steps you recommended, but could only run one of the scans (Panda), since the other require IE, and my IE doesn't work. Panda found 8 viruses and 26 instances of Spyware. It disinfected the viruses but didn't do anything with the spyware. I manually went through and deleted all of the files that I could, but I think there must still be something hidden somewhere. I ran other scans, Adaware, Spybot, etc, and they didn't find anything. I'm not sure what else to do. PLEASE HELP!

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Not sure how you were able to perform an online scan at Panda without IE, as it requires IE5 or higher.

Two new behaviors just started today and I'm wondering if they're related.

I noticed my Bluetooth speaker would not connect to my PC after I had just used it the night before. I tested the speaker and the speaker itself can connect to other devices just fine. I tried clearing out my devices and trying to rediscover my speaker, but my PC can't find any devices -- not my speaker, not my cell phone, nothing. Rebooting doesn't help. I updated my Broadcom Bluetooth drivers to the newest ones and that didn't help either. I checked and Bluetooth services are running, my PC is discoverable, etc. I also have two different Bluetooth dongles and neither is working.

Also today, I discovered that when I try to shut down my computer, it stays stuck on the "Windows is shutting down" screen and it never actually shuts down. I'm forced to hold down my desktop PC's power button to get it to turn off.

I can't recall any changes I made to my computer, other than switching my audio recording preferences in the sound manager from mic to stereo and I downloaded a program called StreamTransport because I wanted to download some embedded media.

Full system scan with Avast doesn't turn up anything after updating virus definitions, although it appears on my first scan, Avast was terminated abruptly on its own before it finished, according to my event viewer. Answer:Bluetooth stopped working + computer won't shut down -- related??

Do remove all (everything) devices connected to the computer.

Sometimes it is the devices are locked and may affect shutdown process.

When insert the devices, do it one by one, and do the shutdown, to see if it is the device giving problem.

You can try this Superantispyware to scan your computer.

Sometimes, it may required 2 or more different type of antivirus, malware, etc..

Running XP Professional SP3...Had troubles with Trojan horse Vundo.LP earlier in the week. With AVG AntiVirus v. 9.0.861 and Malwarebytes, I thought I had dealt with the problem. Suddenly, today, I started having my browser links hijacked again. So I finally broke down and set up an account on Bleeping Computer instead of piggybacking onto the posted solutions for other folks. So, I downloaded and ran Defogger.Next, I ran DSS.scr. Incidentally, I had to run that from a command prompt, as double-clicking it just caused it to open in note pad. Anyway, here be the results from my DSS.scr. Below is the DSS.txt file. About a month ago I made a post on here because I knew my PC had encountered a virus, but I didn't know how. It was freezing and scans wouldn't complete. I followed the instructions to remove the problem (which included running adw cleaner, combofix, and some scans), but was late responding to a senior member's reply and stopped receiving further instructions. At this time my computer was running much better and showed no more signs of infection. I now encountered the same problem and tried the previous instructions, but they don't work anymore. I ran an eset online scan, which was the last instruction. It found 9 threats but just shut down at 99%. I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

Answer:Computer freezes & scans won't complete

Hi and Welcome!!

My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your malware results logs and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
If you happen to have a flash drive/thumb drive please have that ready in the event that we need to use it.
Please be sure to subscribe to the topic if you have not already done so.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete, download or install anything unless instructed to do so.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision. Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your operating system and losing all your programs and data.

Hello,

My computer keeps shutting down and won't let me restart for a few mins each time. The computer could have been on overnight or just an hour before it shuts down each time. I have tried to run numerous scans - spybot, avg, superantispyware and each time, the scans never complete. I ran AVG in safe mode and it came up with vb.aft trojan, vundo (i have tried the vundo remove scan but it didn't show anything) and now in spybot it has come back with smitfraud c. before it shutdown again.

How can I do a removal if I can't see what is there. I am useless at the computer, but I have used forums before and they have helped enormously.

Have you any tips on getting a proper scan completed?

Many thanks,

tricky

Answer:computer shuts down before scans complete

Hi trickiniki,
Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please run Removing Zlob aka SmitFraud, SpySheriff, Infections. This will produce two logs, both called rapport.txt. Before you continue with the cleaning instructions, either attach the first log to us or rename it, otherwise the second log will overwrite the first log. You can run this in either normal or safe mode. To get to safe mode, hit the F8 button during startup until you get to the menu where safe mode is an option.

After you finish with that, continue with the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST and attach the logs you get there as well.

Thanks.

This is an older computer, running XP (managed to upgrade to SP3, though) and is unable to connect to my internet. I have attempted to use 2 wireless USB adapters, and then ran a cable directly from the router to the machine. IPCONFIG reveals that the computer is not picking up a gateway address at all, no matter what method is attempting to connect to it.

GMER locks up at a random point in the scan. I've seen it halt in at least two different places, and after waiting a few hours had to restart the computer when nothing would respond. On at least one of those occasions, I saw two red entries in the GMER window. GMER does not create a "not responding" dialogue or box that will let me force close. The system also hands to the point of CAD-salute not bringing up Task Manager, leaving reboot as the only option.

I am attaching the DDS and Attach logs. Could someone please help me clean this computer, and hopefully identify the problem with its internet connection?

STOP PRESS: could not post using Internet Explorer, downloaded Firefox and am now using this browser to communicateHi there - I know I have a nasty bug which is now redirecting my Google search results to unrelated webpages. I have successfully run DEFOGGER.I have successfully run DDS, and have both the text files DDS.txt and Attach.txt saved.I am running Windows firewall (XP SP2) with regular Firewall settings ON.Downloaded and ran GMER (deselecting according to the very concise instructions in the Preparation Guide -- many thanks for being so thorough and calm ). About half-way through the GMER scan, my laptop, along with all programs running at the time, freezes up, and I have to power off/hard shutdown the computer.Reboots as normal into Windows XP SP2 - I am online at the BC site now using the same infected laptop - a Dell Latitude D630.I will copy and paste here the DDS files without the GMER. QUESTION: how can I run the GMER to its conclusion without freezing up (so I can send its results to you as well)? Or can we begin a clean-up without this scan file?Any help MUCH appreciated. With my warmest wishes -RalphDDS text files as follows. Hi,

Up until yesterday my computer was working fine. I've dealt with viruses before so once my computer started freezing, lagging, and acting up I closed all programs and ran a Malwarebytes scan, but it did not complete. The computer was freezing and responding slowly, so I shut it down. It wouldn't even complete shutting down so I was forced to remove the battery. I ran another scan in safe mode and it still wouldn't complete. Please help, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Hey guys,Thanks in advance for helping me out in this. The first problem I noticed was that Google and Yahoo links were being redirected in Firefox. I ran Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Ad-aware, Spyware Terminator, and McAfee Virusscan several times on this machine. Sometimes they would detect viruses (in Spybot, Delf.uc and Agent.svc are the two most recent things detected). Also getting ads that popup in IE even though I do not use IE.I ran DDS, but when I attempted to run GMER (three times), I would get a BSOD in the middle of the scan, followed by a black screen. I think I may have been infected. My computer seems to be running slow and avast! no longer works. I tried uninstalling avast in order to do a fresh reinstall but the uninstaller hangs up at about half way and will not continue. Also, Firefox stopped working. When I attempt to open it, I get nothing (not even a window saying it crashed/doesn't work). Thanks in advance for any help Tech Support can give with this issue.

Hi

I seem to be having the same issue as another poster. My computer has been running very slowly for a while. Now it keeps freezing at random times and there is nothing I can do (right click to close, ctrl/alt/delete, etc)so I have to do a hard reboot. When I try to run scans it either freezes or completely turns my computer off. I have tried to run them in both normal and safe mode.

Any help would be appreciated and if you need any more information I will do my best to provide it.

Thank you

I really appreciate any help that you can give me. I got a virus from an email I think on July 3. Since then, I haven't been able to go on the internet for longer than 10 minutes or so. This has prevented me from completing virus scans and transferring files to my external hard drive. After 10 or so minutes, the computer will just freeze. I had Symantec and then tried Kaspersky, AVG, Malaware Bites, and others. Almost every time the computer has frozen before I can complete a scan. But even when I can, even deleting the affected files hasn't helped. Unfortunately, I can't see from the history which files were infected. I can't remember either. Even if you can't help me get rid of this virus, if you can help me get enough time to get my important files to an external hard drive that would be an enormous help. I really appreciate the service you guys have here and wish I had found it before I tried to do everything on my own. I hope I haven't screwed anything up in advance. Thank you very much in advance.

I purchased Webroot Spysweeper(antispyware) and Paretologic RegCure (Registry Cleaner) a few months ago.  Until recently, both performed automatic scans at the times I set in both programs.  Now, both programs will only work if I do a manual scan.  The Windows Task Schedular is still set to let these programs perform automatic scans, but they don't.  I am also runnning Sunbelt Vipre antivirus and fire wall.  The antivirus still runs its automatic scans. and neither of these programs indicate they are blocking any function of Spysweeper or RegCure.  My operating system is Windows XP Pro.  What can I do to get both of these programs fully functional again and perform automatic scans as they did for months until recently.Thank youbeachguy

Answer:automatic scans have stopped working in 2 programs

Make sure that your windows updates are current...completely remove each program and reinstall , then see whether the auto update features return...Regcure is not a recommended product,...registry cleaners tend to be scams or ineffective, but that's another issue altogether

k, this is actually my best friends computer...BUT i helped her delete Mcafee because she was tired of having it and it didnt work since she installed it anyway. the version of Mcafee is unknown because i didnt bother to check it out...all i knew was that i hate Mcafee and i dont even have it on my computer so it must die!!! she got it through an email from texas a&m last year in the fall.

anyways, the real problem is that after i fought to uninstall it....winamp, respondus lockdown browser (which if you've never heard of it before...its just a custom browser that studens use to take quizzes and send homework. it "locks down" use of any programs while you're on it so theres no cheating!), yahoo! messenger, and aim 6.

are the two even linked?! i need to find out ASAP because she uses the respondus lockdown browser pretty much every day to do homework, please help!

I know just enough with computers to be dangerous and possibly ruin my computer, which is why I'm turning to you guys. I'll just give you all the details I can and hopefully you can sift through it to find the important stuff...

I had a virus not too long ago and it was recommended that I run ComboFix. That got rid of the major problem except that when I click on Google links it will still send me to a different site. I have to click the Back button and then the link again 2 or 3 times before I go to the right page.

I only ran ComboFix and deleted the files on my computer too. Other than that I didn't do anything else. Everything was fine for awhile.

Recently I had some problems after downloading some video and music files. My computer has started to freeze after a period of time and Internet Explorer will say it needs to shut down a minute after opening. If I ignore the message I'll get an "iexplore.exe - Application Error" message also trying to shut down Internet Explorer. I can still browse the internet though, as I'm typing this with the messages moved to the bottom of the screen.

The computer will freeze after running most programs (iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.) for about 10 minutes or so. I ran ComboFix, MalWareBytes, Ad-Aware and nothing will finish their scans. Even if they do, the computer will freeze before I can opt to delete anything. I can't even delete my Temporary Internet Files without the computer freezing.

When you attempt to run SFC are you using the CMD.EXE as an Administrator? Here's what you do for Windows 7.Click START.In the search field type CMD.A window should appear with CMD.EXE at the top of the list.Right click CMD.EXE and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR.If the CMD window remains type the following> SFC /SCANNOWThen press ENTER.Let me know if this has worked.Bruce.

I am running windows vista and somehow, I don't know when, Mcafee stopped working and I got a pop up stating my computer was at risk and smartsecurity site came up. I did some hunting and got this off my computer but now when I try to install Mcafee total protection from the install disk or from the website, it won't install. I need some advice on how to fix this issue. Thanks

Answer:Mcafee stopped working

Try restarting your computer, and when the boot splash screen comes up, press F8 repeatedly. This should take you a menu that asks how you want to boot Windows. Select "Safe Mode" if you have the Mcafee installation disc, select "Safe Mode with Networking" if you're installing it from an internet download. When Windows boots up, try and install it and see if it works.

I have been having a big problem with a newly installed 500GB hard drive. When I first installed it, windows did not detect the hard drive and I had to go to drive manager to create a drive letter for it. Whenever I try to put files in it the whole computer freezes and locks up to where I can't even move the mouse and no sounds come out, also the keyboard flashes the LED's on it and then turns off the keyboard but the computer stays on with the screen in place. Whenever I plug it in it works fine if I put a few very small files in it like megabytes in size but if I put a GB or anything like it at one time it lacks up my PC. It can handle many gigs of info but you have to put it in a few megs at a time and whenever you shut the PC down and reboot with the hard drive still attached it wont go past the bios boot up screen.

everytime i import a cd into Itunes it gets about three songs in and then the computer makes a three note sound and dies completly as if someone unplugged it. litereally it take 3 mins and then it dies. I have been having freezing problems and the laptop sometimes turns itself off it has only just been repaired so everything was re installed but mcafee keeps saying its stopped working and this has been every day for two months am i protected or not

Answer:mcafee message it has stopped working

You are not protected unless McAfee runs without error messages. Try re-installing it or use some other security software. Comodo Internet Security is less well known but works well and there's a free version which still includes firewall + antivirus. What's more, the "Pro" version is only $20 and you can use it on up to 3 computers at the same time.Comodo website: http://www.comodo.com/Another important point is that Comodo is nowhere near as heavy on system resources as McAfee, so you'll have more RAM free for Windows & apps to use.

Hello to all,

Thanks first to all for there help and time. I have had yahoo as my email, im and home page for about 3 years. All of a sudden about 3 weeks ago I couldn't forward messages due to the fact auto complete won't work. So now i have to copy and paste the message into a new message. Go to address check those i wish to send the mail to then click send mail then put it all together just to forward!!!!!!!!!!! The alphabet letters work but i think this is longer than the other way. I dont know what is wrong. The first problem started about a month ago. The only way for me to get rid of my trash is by going into the trash selecting check all then delete. Instead of hitting the link next to the trash to delete all in trash. This bothered me and i tried to figure it out and gave up. But this this i cant let go. I have sent yahoo 3 emails for help but get nothing but there automated response. I have surfed the web for help and found nothing. Till today I found this sight and pray maybe someone here can and will help me. I dont want to delete yahoo due to the stuff i have saved there. I have looked at all there help topics nothing i mean nothing comes close to helping me. There is no link on how to reinstall NOTHING. Please Please someone help me!!! Oh yeah I also have no viruses have changed nothing on my pc before this problem started or after. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Hi, got a good one. This system belongs to a friend of my wife. I told them I would try to help, but this is way over my head.
They had some problems and took it to a "big box" store to have it fixed. After 3 attempts and selling them Sophos it still isn't right. Scaned and cleaned PeeacMem-A and Mal/ExpIS-BU with Sophos but it is still trying to connect to Kabo-search.com/search.php, Sitesatistic.net/www/delivery/ajs.php, and tosearch.biz/search.php. Sophos also is blocking inbound traffic that shows as blocked Mal/FBScam-A and CXweb/ExpFL-A.

Also the Office programs won't open, coming back with "cannot open "xxx" file is corrupted"

A scan with MalwareBytes came back with no results.

I have used Defogger as requested, and I am sending FRST logs. Any help is greatly appreciated. I understand to do nothing else with the system until I hear from you.

Best Regards,
-Joe

Greetings,

I am using Windows XP SP3. On shutdown of my laptop I received a message about Microsoft Updates to install and computer would shutdown when finished installing. An hour later the updates still had not finished installing so I shut down my laptop manually.

When I turned on my laptop I received a message stating could not find C:windows/system 32/ juschd.exe.bat file, however, computer continued to boot up and all appeared well.

I then tried to update McAfee and the Security Center was not able to update so I type in the address bar of Internet Explore www.mcafee.com and Internet Explore was not able to display the page. I also found I could not get to any site with "McAfee" in the address.

I called McAfee and after a hour they said I need to call a different department and that there would be an additional charge.

So I decided to try and fix this on my own. Researched and found that this might be a MTU size error so made registry entry of hkey_local_machine\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ndiswan
Parameters\Protocols\0... ProtocolType REG_DWORD 0x00000800 PPPProtocolType REG_DWORD 0x00000021 ProtocolMTU REG_DWORD 1452.

This did not work. Then read to uninstall McAfee. So I uninstalled McAfee including showing all folders and files and then deleting them. Needless to say this did not work. I still could not visit the McAfee websites.

Then I found this forum and did some more reading. Wish I had found this forum first.

Since reading some of the p... Read more

Today as I turned on my Aspire V3 laptop I found the system running extremely slow. Opening task manager I found RAM and Harddrive was almost running at 100%, then I checked it was McAfee scan that came with Pre-installation that is taking up all the resources. After about 10 minutes of running like this I decided to restart my computer. However after restart many system functions are no longer working. I can no longer access task manager. either CTRL+ALT+DEL or win-r wont bring it up. Tried MSCONFIG and again it wont start after I enter the keys. System restore similarly won't start after I click the bottons. There is no internet, clicking on device manager bottons won't bring up anything, driver update bottons similarly won't bring any response,  even reset to factory default botton won't work-was able to access the menu but when clicking on bottons nothing starts. - it seems as if the whole operating system is broke.  Since this McAfee program came with the Acer laptop (it literarily says McAfee Internet security -Acer on the program menu) was wondering if anyone from Acer knows about this issue and knows how to fix it. Thanks.

Answer:Acer aspire V3 laptop stopped working after McAfee...

Sounds like the reboot came up in safe mode. Try a shutdown, restart to see if it clears up. Rebooting while in something as intensive as a virus scan / repair is seldom safe. You should always let it continue until it's finished, even if inconvenient.

I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:

- a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager
- after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later
- my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing
- actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off
- when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either
- and probably other stuff that I haven't took note of yet...

Things i've tried to get rid of these problems:
- Virus scan with avast!, a couple viruses found and fixed, but nothing changed.
- disk clean up, nothing changed
- registry clean, nothing changed
- CURRENTLY defragging my C drive, hope something changes..

Anyone know what the heck's going on!?
Anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?
Anything helps and would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:programs not loading right, computer doesn't shut down right, sys recov doesn't work

no replies yet? :(

anyway, just stopped by to say that when shutting down, it takes forever to get to the "Saving your settings..." screen, and that's where I decided that it stops and nothing else after that.
Defragged my C drive, still no results besides the computer feeling a bit smoother-running o_o

When I double click any of the following to open them, I immediately get the message:
"[program] has stopped working Windows is checking for a solution to the problem."
Followed soon after by: "[Program] has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

So far, I have found that each of the following all experience the same when I try to
start them: Skype, McAfee, Desktop Windows Manager and Microsoft Help & Support.

It was suggested that I try to remove malware. I have not paid for a program to do so yet.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Skype but not the others. I first noticed this when I
tried to use Skype yesterday. I hadn't used it since July.

My friend called me about a machine that would not boot. I plugged it in and fan seemed to be not getting enough power and the machine was making this sick noise that sounded like an old Atari/commodore game from the mid 80's. 2 notes back and forth duh, dah, duh, dah. Well, at first I thought it was just a power supply. I put a new power supply in and things worked fine or so it seemed for about 2 minutes. Cpu fan seemed strong, got into bios ect. Then all of a sudden, it just quit, and started making that sound again. I know for a fact that the new power supply is good, and I could use some leads as to what next. Any and all ideas as to where I might go from here would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Answer:Firefox crashing (plugin container for firefox has stopped working)

Go to Index page ? mozillaZine Forums ; on the right-side of the screen, in the search box for Boards, enter "plugin container crashes" (without the quotation marks) and read some of the threads, which may lead you to the solution.

My quick look at a few of those threads indicated that hardware acceleration may be the culprit; if you need help with that, do another search for that subject.

There was an amusing incident on mozillaZine recently concerning hardware acceleration: One person posted a vituperative message blaming the moderators for frequently suggesting turning off hardware acceleration on the grounds that doing that had never helped a single person.

The very next thread I read was from a person thanking the moderators: He had been told to try turning off hardware acceleration, he did so, and his problem was solved.

when the download was complete and waiting for me to click the install button, the computer was shut off accidently.

do i have to re download the trialware or is there a way on my computer i can revive what was already downloaded?

Answer:Downloaded Software 100% complete, then computer shut off by mistake

Hi: I've done that several times myself! I did one of two things....one searched for the file and when I opened it the install continued or two when I tried to download it again, it continued where I left off. Guess my pc "remembered" it! Good luck. angel

Hi there...
I'm attempting to run GMER so I can submit my question. It starts fine and seems to complete the process, but at the end it seems to freeze everything, I cannot use my mouse, and all I am able to do is exit the application (won't let me Save).
I saw the post about renaming the file to 'omer', but that was to correct a problem with not being able to start the app. My problem is occurring at the end.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Casey

Answer:GMER won't complete

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new thread, as this one shall be closed.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

Both DDS and GMER run close to completion and then hang. Neither allows me to save logs. Is there something else I can run to give us a starting point?

XP Pro 32-bit fully updated.

Thanks

Answer:Can't Complete DDS or GMER

If you cannot get DDS to work, please try this instead. Please download RSIT by random/random from the link provided for your operating system and save it to your desktop. Link 1 for 32-bit version Link 2 for 32-bit version Link 1 for 64-bit version Link 2 for 64-bit versionThis tool needs to run while the computer is connected to the Internet so it can download HijackThis if it is not located on your system. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding RSIT attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection. Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop. Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program.
If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator. Read the disclaimer and click Continue. When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad. Another text file named info.txt will open minimized. Save the log files to your desktop and copy/paste the contents of log.txt by highlighting everything and pressing Ctrl+C. After highlighting, right-click, choose Copy and then paste the contents into a new topic in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here. Copies of both log files are automatically saved in the C:\RSIT folder which the tool creates during the scan.-- Note: Do not post the contents of info.txt in your reply. Instead, just include it as an attachment to upload using the "Browse" button in the tex... Read more

Greetings everybody,,

I own L655-1HC laptop, part no: PSK1JE-0GT00XAR, where am facing 2 problems which I couldn't solve till now.
Firstly, the fan continues to work always and does not stop at all which actually annoys me.

secondly, When shutting down, the windows goes off but the machine keeps working with the fan and never shuts down unless I shut it down with holding the switch button for seconds, even when I close the lid, the windows goes off but the machine keeps working with the fan, when opening the lid it just freeze until I manually shut it down through the switch button.

Before couple of days the windows crashed down, and I formatted the laptop and upgraded to windows 8.1 pro, and since upgraded I've been facing these issues.

Answer:Satellite L655-1HC: Win 8.1 Fan always working and / doesn't shut down

Hi

I think the issue is related to Windows 8.1 system
Probably it?s not known to you that Win 8 as well as Win 8.1 does not power off the unit by default. The notebook will be set in ?hybrid shut down mode? which allows you to boot the notebook faster.

I guess this might be the reason for your issue and would recommend you to disable this mode.
Please check this Toshiba document how to do that:

Your feedback would be appreciated

First off, Hello! I am new here, and want to give all the staff a great big THANK YOU for volunteering your time helping folks.
I myself have learned a TON from reading the topics here, and hope to learn a great deal more.

I have included the information asked for by Rimmer in my signature to help with identifying my system specs, etc.

A while back, I was using Norton 360 and got infected with some malware, mainly Alureon.BC and Alureon.BJ.
That prompted me to switch to WindowsLive OneCare and also supplement with Mbam, which has been working great.

My Mbam scans and OneCare scans are coming back clean, but...

From time to time as I research more on malware removal techniques, I download and test out scanning tools to
make sure my protection software isnt missing things. My system seems to be running ok, but I have scanned
with Rootkit Revealer, as well as Gmer and found some odd looking stuff...

Mainly, I noticed a slew of entries in the scan that were similar to the following:

Reg HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\[email protected] 1

I followed the steps in Grinler's preparation post, and downloaded and ran DDS. That seemed to work fine.
I will post the DDS log as well as attach my attach.txt below.

I tried running RootRepeal, and upon selecting Report, and clicking Scan, and selecting the items and drives,
the program said "Initializing, please wait..." and ... Read more

In the past 72 hours my PC has seemed to be infected.

The only signs of infection so far is trouble booting the machine, 70% of the time, it will hang on the Windows loading bar screen, but mainly once inside Windows I will only have use of the machine for around 5 or 10 minutes and it will gradually just freeze up on me. Leaving me with only the Alt+Tab function to
switch between open windows, until this no longer works either.

I have been unable to complete a full virus scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Antivir, or Avast's pre-boot scan due to the machine freezing partway through.

I've had no clues as to virus names or trojans etc.

The freezing up has also prevented me from completing a GMER scan. Is this DDS report useless without the GMER information?

Seems like a very useful site. Hope you guys can help! I can't bare using the 5 second power button job anymore, it kills me a little each time.

Many thanks,

Hi catnip,

Welcome to Tech Support Forum.

You currently have 2 active antivirus programs installed and this could cause problems.

If your PC doesn't hang, please remove either avast! antivirus or AntiVir.

We will then proceed from there. Please let me know if you are having trouble with removing either one of them.

Hello everyone. I have an issue that has been plaguing me for about a month or so at this point.

Whenever I'm using FireFox, which is my main browser and the one I have been using on this computer since I bought it (back in October 2010), sometimes the entire computer will lock up. Now, this means that I cannot alt+ctrl+del, can't move the mouse, can't do anything. It fully locks. This could last for just a few seconds, and everything goes back to normal, or - and this is the killer - it stays that way, and I am forced to hold down the power button on the tower to shut it off. If the freeze happens once during my browsing, and it's a short one that disappears quickly, then when I try to shut down the computer normally, it will not shut down. As in, I see the "Shutting Down..." screen, the monitor goes black (and the light turns orange for standby mode), but the computer DOES NOT shut down. I wonder what this freeze is doing to affect the shutdown process like that.

So to test things out to verify exactly what is causing the freeze....well, the computer never froze unless Firefox was active. I have played Path of Exile for about 20 hours over the course of three days without one single crash, freeze, or error of any kind. So I don't think it's a graphics issue. And yes, I've tried uninstalling FF completely (even going so far as to go to RegEdit after a full uninstall to delete any leftover Mozilla files). I also tried installing the beta version of FF 26.som... Read more

Answer:FireFox causing complete computer freeze

It is probably one of the add-ons causing that. Delete the add-ons and see what happens. Then you can carefully reintroduce them one by one. Maybe you find the culprit.

Hey TSF,

I was performing a system restore earlier when, while the process was occurring, I accidentally knocked the power out to my computer. Now when I turn on my computer it goes to the boot screen where I can choose a normal start up or a safe mode start up. Neither work as when I start it up, it just seems to get stuck at the green loading bar screen.

I also have the option to boot from my recovery disc. But after the "Loading Windows files" screen it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. I'm freaking out because I do a lot of work at my computer and can't get it to work (on my brother's computer at the moment). I also don't want to lose any important files on the computer. What can I do?

I have Vista Home Premium on SP2

Regards

Answer:Accidentally shut down computer during System Restore.. computer doesn't start up

Do you get any options with the Recovery Disc? If you do look for an option called Startup Repair and try that. It should replace the mbr and other essential boot files for you.

Hi!

I posted this in other tech support forums, nobody seems to be able to help me there. Decided to try out this forum.

All of the info is here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/computer-randomly-shut-off-now-sound-doesnt-work-1028785.html#post6563153

To sum it up, my laptop randomly shut off one day (as if the battery was removed) and the sound stopped working when I started it back up. Someone said it overheated. The fan was faulty (worked... kinda), so I thought that might have been true, got it replaced. Computer shut off again in the same way about a week and a half or so later, but was only warm to the touch -- it's been much warmer before without shutting off.

Anyways since it shut off the first time, the sound stopped working, and the drivers for it have had yellow flags and the following message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Any attempt to delete and re-install the drivers has been unsuccessful so far.

Any help in solving this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Computer Randomly Shut Off, Now Computer Can't Bleep (Sound Doesn't Work)

Faulty fan...shutoffs from overheating...my personal opinion is that the system could have resulted in motherboard damage.

What did the person who replaced the fan...have to say about all this, subsequent to fan replacement?

Nothing happens, no spark of life, even though it's plugged in at the mains... I have ALL my info stored on it, including email addresses...

1) Could it be the battery?

2) Is it likely that it could be fixed?

3) If irreparable, can the data be transferred from a dead laptop to another PC or my partner's Mac Book?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and thanks i advance also for any help you may be so good as to offer...

Answer:Satellite Pro L40 - Stopped working and doesn't boot

Hi!

Normally if the computer doesn?t boot and you can see nothing on the screen it?s a hardware malfunction, maybe the mainboard must be replaced.

But in your case I would try this:
Remove the AC/DC adaptor and battery. Then wait one hour and connect both devices again. Try to start the notebook.

If it doesn?t work you should contact an authorized service provider for help. They can check the notebook and determine what is causing this problem.

And your data you can easily safe on other computer. Just put the HDD in external HDD case. Then you can connect the HDD to another notebook to backup the data.
But normally all data should be backed up already! ;)

Good day,

My laptop was working fine yesterday early morning. When I was just surfing the net numerous tabs suddenly opened at the same time. I am using firefox as my default browser, thinking that somehow maybe I had click my mouse but it happened again. I ran my antivirus program avast and a full system scan of malwarebytes, however, the system crashed. I reboot the laptop and again run malwarebytes, a full system scan, which found many malwares which were removed hopefully upon reboot. I run avast which did not find any problem.

Now whenever I open an application usually firefox or microsoft word there would be a delay which was not there before. And after a few minutes, the application will crash telling me that there's an error and needs to be close. The delay is usually greater when I'm using the microsoft word or other applications like notepad, etc. And everytime I do quick scan using malwarebytes an infected file is always seen: "trojan:ransom registry value HKCU\software\microsoft\windowsNT\currentversion\windowslload value:windowslload". The infected file always show up after a quick scan of malwarebytes even if previously scanned I selected the file to be remove after reboot.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

A few days ago I attempted to download a file which apparently was a trojan. I've since had issues with the firefox.exe process continuously running and receiving the "Firefox has stopped running" error. My ESET A/V identified "a variant of Win32/Olmarik.RJ trojan" and quarantined it. I've ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41 multiple times and it has quarantined/deleted the same 7 entries/files (log files available), but I still receive the firefox process error. I changed my default browser to IE8 and the problem has switched to the iexplore.exe process, so this problem is most assuredly a trojan. I need help in removing this one. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1...thanks in advance for your time and help.

Any ideas?

Answer:FireFox stopped working

You could try uninstalling Firefox and then type %appdata% into the run box(windows key+R)then delete the mozilla folder and reinstall.Just a word of warning the Mozilla folder contains all the passwords addons bookmarks etc so if you tried this you would be left with the basic firefox. So before you try this copy the mozilla folder to a safe place so you can if you wish return it later.

Yesterday I was playing a game (EVE online) and my comp froze, so I shut it off, waited, and turned it back on. I opened the game, and minimized it to get on firefox, but it wouldn't open. I tried again and again and nothing, so I try IE which I never use and I get errors so that won't work either. I can access the internet with the game so I know I have connection, but I can't even open firefox, and ie has issues....
Any help is greatly appreciated

Answer:Firefox/ie Just Stopped Working

You might want to run a few virus scans and such. Also, try these:1. Boot up in Safe Mode and see if the browsers will load2. If you have the Firefox setup file, reinstall it.3. If you have your os cd, uninstall IE, and then use the cd to reinstall it.

After firefox was updated 2-3 weeks ago on my computer, it was never able to connect to the internet. That annoyed me to begin with, I tried messing with the vista firewall, and turning it off/adding firefox to the exemptions, and nothing worked. So I just went ahead and used IE. About a week ago, it stopped connecting also, for no reason. I did a system recovery to before it stopped working, and it worked fine for 3 days, and now it doesnt connect again.

I figure it has something to do wiht the firewall, or something related to that, but I do not know what to do other than to block the firewall which hasnt worked. I know I have internet, AIM and the news/weather sidebars on my computer work fine. Other computers are having no problem on my network, and its the same issue on other wireless networks that I used to be able to connect to fine. As well as this, when I plug in the cable straight to the internet, it does the same thing, so its not the wireless.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, its just getting frustrating not being able to do anything online.

Thanks

I had my PC running over night and when I checked it in the morning, I found neither IE nor FF were running (maybe I closed FF, that's not important). So I tried to launch them, but neither browser started and FF threw the following error: "XULRunner - Couldn't read application.ini".
I cleaned Windows up and restarted, but it didn't help. I found both apps can run when admin rights are used.

Where the problem can lie? Should I try changing some registry values?

HiJust last night I got the message "Firefox Has Stopped Working" and then it closes. When I open it again it usually works, or if not, then after a restart it works. Any ideas why?I do have a lot of tabs open (over 20) and about that time last night, I had opened the web site of BBC iPlayer (which is great !). But I noticed its a complete new desigh, and just wondering is there some conflict. It shouldnt really matter, you would imagine, but I dont know. The other thing is, Im using Firefox 2.0.0.14. I get update reminders but they're still for a version 2.??Should I upgrade to 3? And does it install over previous versions? This might solve my problem.thnxh

Answer:"Firefox Has Stopped Working"

It's worth upgrading just based on the amount of PC resources used by FF3 compared to FF2 together with FF3's better security features. If you still get the crash, try launching FF in FF Safe Mode (Start>All Programs). No crash then probably points toward an extension issue.

I first have had trouble with my browser redirecting to bogus websites. The system also ran super-slow. I scanned for malware using Spy Doctor, Malwarebytes, Super Spyware, Avira AntiVir - still had the problem. My computer seemed to behave worse after downloading these products (really slow, ad pop ups) - I removed Super Spyware, and the other products I mentioned are no longer on my desktop after I did a System Restore - I'm not sure if those are removed as well. I installed additional RAM yesterday, which has helped the system run better. I was able to do all of the steps you suggested in the Preparation Guide, but GMER was never able to complete a full scan (after many hours and three attempts, I was not able to save a scan to attach to this message). I kept getting a blue screen that said, "The application failed to initialize properly." Another time it said something about hardware not being installed properly (sorry, I didn't write it down word for word). I wonder if this has anything to do with me installing additional RAM? When the blue screen appears, the system is completely shut down and there is nothing I can do but turn the computer off and restart. Thanks for your time and help. **Edit: I was able to run the GMER scan successfully, I am going to repost - thanks!DDS.txt log: DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Owner at 22:08:34.58 on Sat 07/10/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_15Microsoft Windows ... Ans is so simple, you will have to Right click on My Computer, then Properties/Advanced Tab, and uncheck Automatically Restart under System Failure. This thing may resolve your issue although prior taking this action i would suggest you to run this command which is SFC\scannow. During scaning system will require operating disk. This procedure may take long time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 518 with Intel(R) Core TM2 Quad CPU [email protected] GHz processor, 4 GB Ram, Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 64 Bit O/S.

Sometimes it shuts down but often it doesn't. It just hangs at the shutdown screen. When I restart, it starts normally.

I can't figure out why. I could use some help.

Answer:Computer doesn't shut down.

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

Hi!I'm completely out of ideas so I thought I'd run this by you fine people...I have a Dell inspiron, Windows XP. It's three years old. I play my music using iTunes, and the past few days the songs started sounding like there was interference - they were breaking up and all crackly. So I installed the new iTunes, same thing. Only then it stopped letting access iTunes altogether. When I try to open it a message comes up about Quicktime.I thought I'd uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it, so I backed all my music (and pictures, just in case), on to disc and went into control panel and tried to click on add/remove programs. It won't open. It just doesn't do anything. I've tried every which way and I just can't get into it.My computer is so slow (not to mention Dell is AWFUL, will never be buying one again.) I'm wondering if there's a way to fix this, or if I just might need to buy a new computer? I've been sort of looking at Samsung/Toshiba notebooks, but I'm hearing so many conflicting stories about which are good/no good. Anyway, does anyone know if there's a way for me to somehow fix this, at least temporarily? I don't have the original CD's any more so I can't even restore it back to it's factory settings. xoxo

My "issues" seem to be multiplying.

About 2-3 days ago, I was playing Left4Dead2 online (via Steam) and my game minimized and went to the Windows desktop. I clicked on the game icon and it eventually went back to the game. This began to happen more and more frequently until it was about every 3-5 minutes of game play. One time, I used ALT+TAB to try and go back to the game and noticed an icon for IE (v7) along with L4D2, Steam and Firefox.

Checking task manager, I saw two copies of IEXPLORE.exe running even though I rarely use that browser. Closed one and they both went away, returning in a few minutes, same as my game being forcefully minimized.

Since then, I have tried upgrading to IE8 but no change. Tried uninstalling IE8 and IE7 thought when actually clicking on the IE icon, it still appears to be IE8.

One odd thing, though I usually have headphones plugged in, I was using speakers today and I lost "focus" on Firefox, couldn't continue to scroll down a long page. Has task manager running, saw both iexplore.exe entries appear and then heard a recoding of some lady talking about her blog, even though the only browser open was Firefox in a single tab. No pop ups, no pop unders visible, but when I closed IE from task manager, it stopped.

Had an enterprise copy of McAfee running, uninstalled and tried downloading AVG free 9.40 v. It gets all the way to the end of the install and says I don't have admin rights to update the registry (I am the... Read more

Answer:Two copies Iexplore.exe, GMER and McAfee don't work

Need to add - also tried running Panda's anti-rootkit app and it found nothing. Also tried their anti-virus which was slow but said found 9 'issues' though when trying to clean then, it hung the system.

Also, when first installing McAfee, it gives you the option of connecting and downloading a newer version than the CD. It was unable to connect to their server for some reason, something I have had before with trying to update my older version to newer DAT files. Even if I disabled Windows firewall, still McAfee could not connect.

And I saw in another post where you posted a different link to GMER. This version did install and is running now. Will post results.

Hi,

I was using Windows (win7 pro 64bit), just browsing the internet and then I went away from computer for an hour or two. When I came back computer had restarted itself and there was this black bios startup screen and it asked me to boot from cd. "Boot from cd: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

Ok. I didn't know what was going on so I did that. After I inserted the cd, computer started to install Windows 7. I didn't want to do that so I didn't install it. I realized something is wrong.

I closed the computer. I decided to unplug all the usb-devices and restarted. Same thing again - boot from cd: disk boot failure... I pressed DEL to get to the BIOS settings. I changed bios settings to fail-safe. I restarted, pressed F8, chose at first Optimal Windows settings (sorry, can't remember the accurate names of these functions) but it didn't work. It just got stuck and nothing happened. Then I restarted and tried Safe Mode. It got stuck and I got blue screen which went away so fast that I didn't have enough time to see what it said. Then I changed the BIOS settings back to optimal, pressed F8 and selected Repair Your computer. The "Repair your computer" function didn't accept my password and then it just restarted the computer and again there was black screen and text: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK...

I tried once again use the F8 and choose Safe mode but F8-key didn't work anymore. When I pressed it, it did make a sound but I cou... Read more
