Preferred Solution: Slow Comp/slow browser/Slow shutdown and Start up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Slow Comp/slow browser/Slow shutdown and Start up

Erm hi. Last night my PC was absolutely fine, and today it seems to be completely broken.

I turned the computer on today and received a "malware detected" message from Avast antivirus. I tried to move to chest/delete and the message kept popping up. I looked up NewDot malware on the internet (which is what Avast was detecting) and it said that NewDot prevents access to the internet, which seemed about right as i was having to use my laptop to access the internet as the time, because the other computer wasn't working properly. It said that i could get rid of it easily my going to Add/remove programs and uninstalling it, which i did.

After this i restarted the computer and the loading time was exceptionally slow, i thought it had frozen, but it was just taking 5-10minutes to load. When it finally did load i tried to access the internet through a number of different browsers, but none of them would load. I tried to open some other applications too, and they wouldn't load either. I went to msconfig and disabled the majority of my startup items, and then restarted the computer. Once again the loading time was slow, and no applications would start. I then tried to do a defrag, but the program didn't work. Then i tried system restore, and the application didn't load, i came back to the computer 5-10minutes later and it had loaded, but it came up with an error that said something along the lines of "system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restar... Answer:Slow boot, slow application loading, slow shutdown

I don't know if there's an edit option on this site, but i couldnt find it.

Anyway, i've found a website dedicated to this newdot "foistware" as it is known: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

It says that deleting the .dll will result in a broken internet connection. IT also mentions that sometimes uninstalling it will still leave errors in winsock.
This seems to be what has happened to me, so i'm going to try the LSP fix utility available for download on that site. The problem is that this laptop has no floppy disk drive, and i don't have a UBS storage device available.

I was just wondering, if and when i do repair the LSP problems, could that be what is causing my system to run slowly? I hope so.

Thanks again.

Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting upa nd I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

#1 Desktop and start menu programs won't respond. Can be clicked and the arrow with hourglass will show up, but with no response. Sometimes clicking on them will freeze and lock up. Sometimes they will, but it is only after several manual shut downs.

#2 Boot up is a lot slower, will stay on "Loading your personal settings". Takes longer than it usually would.

#3 Shut down is slower or will freeze. All desktop items and desktop will be clear, leaving just background, as usual before a shut down, and will freeze leaving the arrow cursor still there. Sometimes it can get past this after a wait and get stuck on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen. And never shut down. This requires a manual shut down by pressing the PC's button.

#4. Start menu icon sometimes can't be clicked (Would require me to manually shut it down and turn it back on with a chance of it working), if it can, somet... Read more

I have followed ALL of the step-by-step instructions, as advised, before posting. Here are my specs: Win XP Media Center Edition; Version 2002; SP 2; AMD Athlon 64 processor; 3400+; 2.39 Ghz; 896 MB of RAM (anyone want to also tell me why this is when the front of my pc says "1024 MB RAM"??). My problems are my pc is ridiculously slow - this includes web browsing and just generally doing anything on here; super-slow startups and shutdowns. I ran pc-cillin, no viruses or malware; ran lavasoft, had a couple of cookies I removed; spybot picked up nothing; panda picked up 3 instances of spyware but I didn't know what to do about it as it wanted me to buy it to remove them and I couldn't tell where they originated; etrust online scanner picked up nothing; windows defender picked up nothing. My computer is locking up as I type this and I dont know how to fix it. I've tried downloading the suggested Spyware and Scans but Ive had no success. Im not a computer whiz obviously, so I need some suggestions on how and where to fix this problem. I do believe that I have some sort of virus but I have no idea how to remove them. I'd appreciate any help I can get ! Thanks

Answer:Slow Slow Slow Browser, Applications Failing

How long has it been since Windows was installed? Have you done any regular file maintenance, like deleting old files you don't need anymore, deleting temp files, uninstalling programs you don't use anymore, deleting months-old system restore points, etc, and then running scandisk, and lastly, running defrag? Maybe it's not a virus. You may just be running out of room on your hdd.

Answer:Malware logs, firefox freeze, comp slow, internet explorer slow

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a differe... Read more

Hi and welcome to TSF! I will say right off that Norton (aka the resource HOG) is probably your biggest issue. There are a few things to clean here though......

This took me one Google search to find:
msnappau.exe is part of the Microsoft MSN toolbar system, which initiates an update facility for the MSN downloadable toolbar. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference.

I've had this Dell Dimension 5100 for almost a year now, and everything has been flawless until recently. Now when I turn it on, it takes a long time to stop loading everything - it sits at the "Welcome" screen for 3x as long as before, then when the desktop shows up, it's only the wallpaper. Eventually the icons appear. After that it still takes quite a bit longer than earlier for the hard drive to settle down. Also, if I use standby, my computer becomes slower and less responsive (especially while surfing), eventually getting to the point where I just have to restart it. Sometimes it won't even turn off unless I hold the button down for 5 seconds. I have clicked on the "Turn Off" icon and left the house for work, only to return to the "Windows is saving your settings..." screen 9 hours later. Spyware/virus/HiJack scans produce nothing of significance. I have run WindowBlinds for months as well, with no issues until the same time recently when "the memory cannot be read..." errors started popping up. Re-install did nothing, so I no longer run it, and the errors are now gone. I'm at my wit's end. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch...

Answer:super-slow startup, slow glitchy comp

Well when you have windowsblinds using it to make you a desktop that uses up quite a bit of memory and makes your computer take a while to start up. Also you might have quite a bit of stuff in your start up. To check this click start run and type in msconfig and uncheck everything you don't need in start up. If you want to make it easier you can get a tuneup utilities trial and use the start up manager and delete any and all start up entries you don't need as well as restore them if you need them later. Also you might need to run the registry cleaner that comes with the trial of tuneup utilities. It would be easier to install it and just click on the 1 click maintenace on the desktop if you installed it and checked the option to put it on your desktop. Here is the link to it: http://www.tune-up.com/download/tu2006/ all you have to do is enter you email address and click the button and it will download. If you need any further help just reply.

I noticed slow startup shutdown speeds a month or two ago, and have been trying to fix the problem by using all the usual scanning and detecting software. Some of my programs are slow to launch after a reboot for some reason, after I launch them the first time they lag but when I launch them a second time they pop right up, except for MSconfig which takes about 25 seconds to launch, can't figure that one out. Was having problems with my IE 10 crashing and restarting, and my ISP kept sending me e-mails about illegally downloading copyrighted material, didn't see any unauthorized wireless activity on my Gateway, so I might have had a backdoor problem or something like that. So I finally ran combofix and it took care of a lot of my problems. So far some other programs launch the way they're supposed to, no IE 10 crashing and restarting it, and no more e-mails from my ISP. But I still have slow startup shutdown speeds, and some programs slow to launch, same lag time on MSconfig. I've ran the scanners y'all usually have people run, so I can attach or paste those logs if you would like.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Edit: Topic was Moved to the Malware Logs forum since Combofix had been run

Hi. Just wanted to say first, Thank you! for this incredible website and the work you do. I've tried to use it to answer questions and problems I have but right now I am at a halt. My computer runs very slow and also takes about 10 minutes to load/startup and I have about 7 programs on startup. I've tried to use alot of the spyware, antivirus and optimizing software(spybot, AVG, spygaurd, advanced windows care, ccleaner, superspywareguard, ad-aware, and more) out there to help but there's still problems. Here are some of my computer specs:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Media Center edition, with Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Centrino Pentium M processor, 1.60 GHz
Video Device: Ati Mobility Radeon X300
Hard Disk: 60 GB
Physical Memory: 1,535 MB (System Cache: 7958K)
Kernal Memory: 102108 K (Paged: 77204K, Nonpaged: 24896K)
Handles: 14955
Threads: 609
Processes: 63
I've tried to find what processes are running that could be malicious but they all seem to check out ok with the programs I've used. I have never formatted my computer - could that be the problem? Many thanks.

We started noticing trouble in our internet browser Google Chrome. Gmail would not respond at all and YouTube would drag loading videos. We have two computers in our home and the other computer works just fine with gmail and youtubes videos so we believe our internet connection is stable. I uninstalled Chrome and re-installed it but got same results. Also, internet explorer was having the same issues. Now, the entire computer system is running slow as if there is computer issues not browser issues.

Ran MS Security Essentials scans but no problems. Malware Bytes full version runs on our computer and no detected problems. Ran CCleanup but no detected problems but did remove alot of junk.

We are at a loss on how to proceed. We have had very good success in the past using Tech Guy support so we thought we would reach out for help.

Thanks!!

As the title says, I am having problems with my computers loading times and lag in games and other areas.

At first I thought I had some malware draining resources or something, but I followed the guide in these forums for removing it and ran ad-aware, spybot, microsoft anti-spyware, ccleaner and my antivirus software. That cleaned up a few things that ad-aware alone had not previously found, but the lag issue and slow loading times still remained.

I dont think is a connection issue, as some of the problems are unrelated to internet connection, like my startup and shutdown.

Often when I shut down, it notifies me that ccApp.exe process is not responding. I looked this process up and beleive it is a norton anti-virus auto update process, but if it always not responding, maybe it is draining resources.

Any help would be appreciated, and if I forgot to mention any information please ask and I will try to provide it. Thanks

Hi -

I have been running Win7x64 for a few years now, and I have an insanely annoying problem during Windows shutdown or Windows startup.

I am running my OS and most of my programs on an SSD drive, which generally performs very nicely. I have a few monster-sized apps on traditional drives, like VMWare workstation, and a few games. Everything seems to run pretty zippy, once Windows has booted.

However, I will randomly see a slow Windows shutdown that takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes - measured - to successfully power down. (I never force a shut-down or restart unless the system takes longer than 1/2 hour to shut down, and there is almost no hard-drive activity). During the 15-20 minute shutdown, there is nearly constant hard drive activity.

Additionally, I will see random times when Windows seems to hang during the startup process. Normally, my startup processes will take about 50 - 55 seconds to start. Occasionally, I will see the startup time take as long as 6 - 7 minutes. There isn't significantly higher hard drive activity while this is happening.

It drives me crazy.

The startup / shutdown issues may be related, or may not be related at all.

Scans with Live CD versions of Kaspersky and Avira have shown no malware activity.

Does anybody know what is going on? Or, does anybody have suggestions on how to isolate the problem(s)?

Thanks!

AzJazz

Man its been like 3 years since ive had to come to a tech support site for help...

Anyways. This all started 3 or 4 days ago when i was being a bad little boy and downloaded a keygen from a site ive never been too and didnt trust from the get-go and now i know why i had that gut feeling. Bad motives aside its completely taken over my browser and slowed my comp speed down noticeably.

To top it all off its even taken control of my Anti Adware/Maleware security program (MaleWare Bytes Anti Maleware) or as i am going to call it from now on MWBAM.

Anyway heres a complete explanation of what i know and what i have done so far. About 3 days ago when i first noticed the redirection on my google searches i ran a Virus scan with my Anti Virus (AVAST) and it came up with 3 results. It showed my Volume Control Panel being infected which is not new btw i get that during EVERY scan i think its because i didnt download the exact drivers for my system anyway thats a false positive. and 2 others that were spywares. I quickly removed the 2 but it seemed to make no difference what so ever. So i decided to go to my maleware/adware remover that i got just for this type of situation. MWBAM, but as i tried to open MWBAM it wouldn't open i thought this was strange so i googled it. and i found this thread on Cnet of all places.

I read the First Steps page. Just now and i downloaded the DDS thing. But whenever i run it it doesnt finish the scan However i did the Gmer one and here is the log for that one. But yea the DDS doesnt finish and i gave it WAY more than 3 minutes and tried it 4 times. I even went upstairs and chopped some green beans for half a hour for them to be preserved. Anyways hope this log makes this thread abide by the rules a bit more. Sorry if i wasnt following them correctly.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. My yahoo messenger was hijacked yesterday, I received a server certificate error today that claims someone may be eavesdropping on me, the comp is getting slower and slower, and the startup and shut down is getting longer and longer. This is a used laptop that I received with issues to begin with. I thought the issues were resolved, but instead, they keep getting worse. I'm not familiar with HJT, and don't know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! ~Jesica

The puter is an HP Compaq 6730s
Running Vista Home Basic SP2, Build 6002
I'm using Trend Micro Internet Security Pro
I normally use Opera, but also have Firefox and IE

The error I received in Opera today reads in part: "The server's certificate did not match it's hostname. Accept?" The security tab says "The server's name does not match the certificate's name. (webpage and server info) Somebody may be trying to eavesdrop on you."

So yeah, I've these problems for the past couple days. My browsers (Opera and Firefox) used to load pages quickly, but now they're painfully slow. Opera lags and freezes often; Firefox doesn't, but it still takes a very long time to load pages.

I'm also getting these occasional "invisible ads," even when I don't have a browser open. I can hear the ads but I can't see them.

Also, I sometimes get redirected to unwanted sites. This mostly happens when I click on a search result in Google.

Here are some things I've done:

-Ran SUPERantispyware (I can post the log(s) if needed)
-Defragged hard drive
-Cleaned cache, cookies, etc. on both browsers

Answer:Slow browser, slow internet, random audio ads: virus?

I'm not sure if this should go in the Antivirus Program as it seems that my problems occured after installing Kaspersky Anti-virus 7.0.

My Zonealarm Security Suite subscription was ending. I decided to completely uninstall this and go with separate Anti-virus & firewall.

I installed the trial version of Kaspersky AV 7, rebooted and configured. Then, I went with Zonealarm Pro. I installed and rebooted.

1st thing - on reboot it took almost 15 minutes for my desktop and all icons to completely load. This only occured one time, so I suspect Kaspersky was doing some scanning or caching something.

Since then, bootup has been normal....about 30 - 45 seconds from logon for all processes and services to load.

However, I've noticed 2 things in particular:

1) When I open up certain applications, they don't open right away. It sometimes takes 2 or more minutes to open up. During this delay the hour glass shows, then stops. Hard drive goes quiet. Then, the program finally opens up.
Not all applications do this, and it's not always the same ones after each boot. Sometimes all of them open right away, sometimes none.

2) When trying to shutdown the computer, there is also a significant delay. After 2 or 3 minutes, the shutdown procedure begins, the desktop fades and says: "Logging off". It stays here for a while (anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes, or longer). Again, the hard drive is quiet. Then the hard drive churns and it goes to saying: "Shutting down&q... Read more

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!
I've read on several sites to download and run rkill.com (did that) and then to download and run Malwarebytes (did that). I've run Spybot Search and Destroy, SuperAntiSpyware, and AVG as well. While Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware keep telling me they havent found any more trojans or other infections since they removed the files that said AntiMalwareDoctor, AVG says it has found several Trojan (DNS and Agent) and Adware (Adrot and EZLife) that it can't access. I'm no longer getting the Antimalware Doctor ads and warnings, but this thing has started slowing everything down and taking over my firefox browser and I'm assuming it is doing the same thing to internet explorer (which I never use). I went in to check it out to see if it was having the same issues as firefox and it wouldnt even let that connect to the internet so I looked up some results of that with malware and was told it could change the proxy settings so I fixed (I'm assuming) that so my weather apps can use it later for the updates they need.

I read in several of the posts here to download and run HiJackThis. I ran a Scan only and it didn't come up with the setupupdater0000.exe that my comp found in a windows folder that is supposed to be part of the Antimalware Doctor so I deleted the setupupdater0000.exe file. I'm afraid to do anything else since I'm not very computer literate. I'd appreciate any help anyone could give me as I'm r... Read more

I was having issues with my comp for a few months now. Back then I was running XP home and was having issues that included a slow running comp and redirects. I finally gave up and installed windows 7 Home hoping it would solve the problem but am currently having the same issues just not as severe as back then. I did save files I wanted from one HD to another (both internal) before I installed Windows 7. These included photos, music, and anything else I felt was important I needed before the OS install. The main problem now is my computer is running slow and anytime I open a browser, either IE or FF, I get a second tab that opens up with some crazy website. The main sites are lycos.com and epoclick.com. I did a search on the epoclick site and saw others that were having the same problem.

Any help would be appreciated. Need any other info please ask.

Hi! I'm using a samsung  laptop with windows 7 32 bit os and  intel icore i3 processor  with 4gb ram.

The other week, I started experiencing this slow computer and browsing. Then I started to check on the processes and services that is running through the task manager. I saw that there is 100% cpu usage even if I am only using vlc. I ran rkill and it terminated one malware process called rezip.exe. I usually ran rkill whenever I feel like scanning my computer for viruses or malware then I use jrt, mbam and adware cleaner then emsisoft anti malware; and it's the first time I've encountered that rezip.exe being terminated by rkill. Then last week, as I did the same to somehow eliminate the malware, it detected a missing service called tbs. So in an effort to resolve this on my own, after I ran rkill, I ran jrt, then adware cleaner,  and mbam. but nothing was found. Then I started to search the internet for whatever the culprit maybe. I saw that a some malwares and rootkits can bypass an outdated program and enter your system so I have decided to download updates for windows. Over 3 days, I tried to do the same thing, but nothing was found and the win update downloader won't download anything and because of the length of time of waiting I leave my laptop on while I hope to update it when I wake up the next day. I also tried to download updates for NVIDIA  since it is my graphics driver and it always pops in the taskbar but I can't seem to download... Read more

NOTE: I'm currently receiving assistance from another source. I'll assume that I will get my problem fixed from them, so I guess this thread can be closed/locked. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Hi, first time posting here, so sorry if I missed anything in my post.

Both of the internet browsers I use (Opera and Firefox) have been extremely slow lately. Opera hangs and lags often; Firefox doesn't, but like Opera, it loads pages extremely slowly. I've tried cleaning the caches, cookies, temp files, etc. to no avail.

Also, I get these occasional audio ads that start playing even when no internet browser is open. I can't see the ads, but I can hear them. They last for 15 seconds or so. In addition, I sometimes get redirected to unwanted sites when I'm browsing (it usually occurs when I'm clicking on a search result in Google or something).

Answer:Help! Slow browser, slow startup, page freezes.....

Good evening. As HijackThis has not been seriously updated by Trend Micro in some time, it is now no longer considered to be an effective tool for malware removal. You will need to go here, follow steps 6, 7 and 8 and post accordingly into this thread.

Everything is just running super slow man. I used to be able to put up 30 google chrome tabs and literally have them all come up. Nowadays, I put 2-3 and they're stuck loading until I actually click on them. I don't understand it and would like to restore my laptop to it's old capabilities XD But um, with google chrome, other than the really slow tabs, i have moments where if I have 2 windows up side by side (each taking up 50% of the screen), I can type on one and the laptop will "hiccup" will all of a sudden, I will start typing in the other browser....

Or if I'm in microsoft word, I will type 1 thing, press enter and microsoft word will start loading for 30 seconds or something... (is not responding) all over the place. Is this a virus that c--- see? I was just typing that sentence and my computer "hiccuped" and made me start typing in the other browser.. literally. It's very annoying. I could like to get rid of all the "hiccups" and "not responding" that I experience all over the place when I am on my computer if possible. It is making it very very very hard for me to study and get schoolwork done when I am afraid to type too much and have something crash or not be able to put a lot of information on my screen without having everything jump all over the place.

thanks for reading.

Over the last coulpe of days I'v noticed that XP is taking longer and longer to start up (2 mins approx) and shut down (5 mins approx). I'm not sure if these messures help the speed of my pc but I regularly clean out temp intenet files, cookies and have disk keep for defrag. I also use mem turbo to keep an eye on my ram which at ultimate best runs at 399. I have a 2.5 ghz cpu. But seems to be constantl running sub 200. How can I speed up start up and shut down?

Answer:Slow Start + Shutdown of XP

remove unneccesary items from the startup list and also check your antivirus isn't causing the problems by scanning at these particular times

Answer:Not Again! Slow PC, Slow Start Up, Slow Outside of Internet

Hello justanotherguy,

You continue to get reinfected because you are still running unpatched XP.

IMPORTANT!:
Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system.) At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it?s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from.

My Windows XP computer has slowed down within the past month or so. The computer, an eMachines T6528 Athlon 64 3500+ with 512 mb ram which is shared, while certainly not a power burner, always started quickly and was quick to get to web sites. I use it mainly for email (Outlook Express) and browsing the internet (IE7). I have defragged the C: drive and cleaned out any unused applications - no help. Since my Trend Micro Internet Security subscription was expiring and since the computer was already really slow I changed security to a CA Suite provided by my ISP. That did nothing for the speed.

It starts very slowly, opens programs very slowly, and takes forever to load a web page.

The following HJT log follows, as does a start-up list. Please make this machine run faster.

Hi,

My mother-in-laws computer is running very slowly, both opening windows, folders and the internet. She is running AVG, but I have a feeling that there may be stuff that is affecting the overall running. In Startup, there are a couple of items with just squares. Tried deleting them, but they come back.

Had to get onto the right computer to post this.

Main problems: Programs take a while to start-up, windows takes a while to start-up, all icons on desktop take a while to appear when starting up (just generic icon for a while until computer actually starts responding), video and audio is choppy.Already went through the Malware attempts and disk scanning, defragging, and all that:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1586320Not sure if it's software or hardware related as I'm not sure what CPU temperatures I should be expecting and the computer has always run hot.The previous HD on this computer got borked and ended up getting a new one thats much bigger and faster (7200 vs 5400). So far from all the different hardware testing programs everything seems to be passing.Any ideas? It's been driving me crazy and sure is making it hard to get work done. Thanks!

Answer:slow comp, especially on start-up & jumpy streaming video

How much RAM installed? How much free space on C:? How large is C:?I find that..."slow" is a relative term and when applied to a system...much depends on what is installed and running.Don't know if you have looked at remarks by Quietman7 at Slow Computer-browser Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/87058/slow-computerbrowser-check-here-first;-it-may-not-be-malware/.FWIW: From the time that I press the power button...until all icons are present and system is accessible...normally takes 2-3 minutes for me (which is probably a good average).Problems with video files...depends heavily on system capabilities and origin/locale of the video source (online or hard drive).Louis

Can someone please help me analyse this log? It appears that I had the Virtumonde virus which spyboy detected and VundoFix virus (which Avast detected and removed as I reboot) since last Wednesday, May 14th, there was no system restore date available at the time so since then I've run Spybot, Spydoctor, Avast, cleaned out startup, removed useless programs, ran diskcleanup and defrag, xspy and still my applications (especially MoZILLA & INTERNET EXPLORER) are crawling at startup and I don't understand why?? Hello southflgirl,We need to create a Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) Log Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from one of the links below and save to your Desktop. Primary Mirror Secondary Mirror DSS will do the following: 1. Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista. 2. Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives. 3. Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review. 4. Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using Deckard's System Scanner. 1. Close all applications and windows. 2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts. 3. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious. 4. When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad: main.txt <-- Will be maximized extra.txt <-- Will be minimized 5. If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. 6. Please copy (<Control>+C) and paste (<Control>+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. Hi, I am hoping someone can help me.  My computer starts kind of slow, and I feel like it is running a little slow also.  I thought it would be a good idea to un-check some of the start-up things after going into misconfig, but I do not know what any of the items are.  Is there an easy way to make my computer start faster.  Also, when I am on the computer, I hear the tower making noise like it is doing something, as though there was some kind of background process going on that I don't know about.  I am running McAfee and I am pretty sure I do not have any kind of virus.  Please help.

Answer:start slow, runs slow and makes noise when I am simply typing on computer

Oh Yeah, I am running windows XP that came with the computer a year ago when I bought it.  It has an 80 gig hard drive and I think 1 gig of memory.  Thanks in advance to anyone's response.

I have Norton Antivirus installed, which challenged the above TSG SysInfo download, but I downloaded this utility anyway. Also, in addition to the above problems, my Task Manager often shows 100% CPU usage, which causes my computer to freeze and hang often. I have run Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, ran Window Defender full scans, ran my default Norton Antivirus full scan. My My Computer program shows many red circles with white crosses and yellow triangles with black exclamation points enclosed.

I think my computer is loaded down with a lot of unnecessary junk, infected junk, and I do not know what a lot of that junk is, since the short-hand codes are not very descriptive. I need to know what processes are safe and necessary and what ones I can uninstall without harming other processes.

Thank you for your time and help. I sure do need it. S-Pie

Hi there, please can you help?
I realize this BSOD might be a commonly reported problem but the issues here seem not to have been addressed specifically by other threads so I hope I haven't opened a new thread unnecessarily. Anyhow, here goes...
Various pc problems have arisen since coming home from holiday last week:

Background: 2 months ago: installed samsung SSD to run a new install of Win 7 64bit - on Asus P5NE-SLI with newly installed AHCI controller card. Successful after some troubleshooting; ran fine for several weeks.

PC left for 2 weeks while on holiday: on return a few days ago pc had problems on start-up: blank screen; no/slow start-up then BSOD attached.
The problem now is specifically a start-up issue: very slow to boot windows; if I hit F8 or del then BIOS loads very slowly, if at all; windows loads but freezes part way through. It DOES eventually load but it doesn't seem stable: yesterday the pc restarted unprompted.
The clock time was incorrect by about 20minutes when I got home from holiday (cmos battery?)

So far, I have (in chronological order)...
cleaned out dust, checked for shorts and loose wires
run Prime95 stress tests: seems OK - no crashes; Speed Fan recorded CPU temps of >50C before I closed the program. On idle CPU is now 37C; GPU 47C
memtest run overnight: 7 passes no errors;
updated GPU driver; run Furmark GPU stress test: all fine!
searched for other driver updates - none required (at least through windows)
run Sams... Read more

Answer:Slow start-up; crawls into BIOS setup; then slow to load windows

The problem is with your usb hub, or quite possibly a usb device that is plugged into it.
The fault is clearly sourced in the usb system though.
You may try updating your chipset drivers.
try rebooting with nothing plugged in but mouse and kb.

I recently installed the windows updates for my computer and as the title explains, it made my computer super slow for some reason. Once I log on, that is when it becomes unbearably slow. Also, the browser connects, but both IE and Firefox keep getting the error "connection timed out"...and that is for any website. I can get to my homepage (google), but once I try to go to any other page, it always times out.

I have windows XP SP2...
Specs:
Dell Optiplex GX60
256MB RAM
160GB HDD
Intel Celeron 1.70GHz
Intel integrated peripherals and a ATI gfx card (radeon all-in-wonder 7500)

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows Update renders comp SUPER SLOW and no browser connect

Also...my network connection is now getting the bubble; "limited or no connectivity"...and when I disable/enable it then it works for a brief minute and repeats the limited or no connectivity thing. I can see that I am connected, I see my network, the signal strength is 4 out of the 5 bars, but the "activity" says 1,528 packets sent and 4 received...?

Recently my laptop has been experiencing substandard performance. It takes longer than it used to when starting up the computer (Windows XP logo on a black background with the loading bar at the bottom). It also takes very long when logging in to my username (stops at the screen when it says "loading your personal settings" after filling in the password and proceeding to load the desktop). It takes about 15-20 minutes just to get everything running and that I'm able to do a thing without delays. When shutting down, it also takes longer then it used to before the computer turns off. When running Firefox, sometimes it doesn't start up and a window that has something to do with scripts pops up. Choosing "Yes" on the question "Do you want to continue using this script anyway?" will start Firefox and choosing "No" closes the window and running Firefox again works as well. Hi All

Recently my pc has been acting up. On start up i get missing .dll error messages, alot of pop ups and my upload speed is really slow. Download speed is 9700 kbps but my upload speed is only 20kbps.

I tried ad-aware to remove bad files but that did not do anything.

Below is my HijackThis log
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Slow upload speed, missing .dll files, slow start up

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.

TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
To avoid addtional delay in gettin... Read more

As requested by Noviciate on my earlier post here I started this post.Problems(Very) Slow start up of the system WinXP pro SP3After power on it takes 2 minutes before I get the login window. Then it takes 2,5 minutes (total 4,5 minutes)to get all the icons on the desktopAnd than it takes a other 2,5 minutes (total 7 minutes) before all my icon (like the Windows security shield icon) in the task bar ar up and running. Now when I start an application let's say Firefox, it takes 1 min 15 sec to launch. And a other 7 sec before any text I type in address window appears. Only the first character is printed and than 7 sec nothing is happening. Than the rest of the character are appears.Chrome PluginLast week I had a Norman waring about a infected Chrome plugin while I launched the Chrome browser. This message is gone now. I did not install a new plug-in that could be the reason that warning.I suppose that was the beginning of the problem (very slow)GMER crashes the hole machineAs described in my earlier post the PC crashes with a blue screen of death (BSOD) while I was preparing to collect all the information for a perfect removal post.Files attachedAttached the DDS log (dds.txt and attached.zip)Combofix logTNX for your help so far.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the ... A little while ago I put a new 1TB hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N5050 to replace the old 500GB one. I used the Windows backup program on the computer and the information on the Windows website. I transferred the system image to a backup hard drive, then installed it onto the new hard drive. I've tried a disc cleanup, defragmenting the hard drive, and I've run all the diagnostics that Windows has and still this thing is SLOW!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, my computer has an Intel Core I3 processor. I still have the old hard drive with everything still on it and I still have the system image on the backup hard drive. Please if anyone can help, I would GREATLY appreciate it, this thing is driving me nuts (My OLD Inspiron 1420 with a Core2 Duo processor runs circles around my N5050!)

Greetings cjps5556 and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that. ===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps are a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems... Hello,

I would be grateful to anyone who can help with this problem.

Recently I have noticed that upon starting up my computer I get a message stating that the computer had not been shut down properly the last time it was on, and asking whether I want to enter safe mode.

Upon opting to start up as normal, both the process of getting into windows and shutting down is extremely slow, also if I click to enter my computer, this is also extremely slow and the search light animation continues for over 10 minutes.

I have gone through start up manager and removed anything which might be causing a slow down. Often when turning the computer off it hangs for a very long time and needs to be switched off manually.

I use norton internet security and firewall and so hopefully this is not a virus.

Nothing has particularly changed recently to bring on this slowdown.

Grateful if anyone can help with this.

Answer:Extremely slow shutdown/start up and my computer

1) Please boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r

2) Please run full system scans with BOTH your installed anti virus app and with MalwareBytes

Let's see where we are after that.

I know nothing about computers so please help!!
My computer is really slow during start up, it spends alot of time on the windows start up and the welcome section, then when it reaches my desktop it takes a long time for it to completely finish loading. For some reason a window called System 32 is popping up when windows starts. I have tried 'msconfig' to make the startup faster but it doesnt work. Also, my computer keeps blinking even when I'm not doing anything on the computer. Also, now it is freezing more frequently. Before it did not freeze as much, it somtimes freezes during start up and sometimes freezes randomly out of no where.
I have ran spybot and avast! but it says that my computer is clean. I have also used CCleaner and PerfectDisk but those did not help either.
Anyone has any idea on how I can fix this?
Thanks

Answer:slow start up/slow perf/freezes alot

Welcome to the forums Candiehearts!

I am guessing you have some sort of malware undetected by your antivirus and antispyware tool, since there are many symptoms of an infection. But do this anyways, just to see: as the experts say, please post a HijackThis log in this forum; please read this first.

My Toshiba Tecra laptop 8100 with XP is Slow/Slow/Slow!

When turning on, it takes 5 to 10 minutes to settle down. Once it stops grinding and I try to start any application -- such as Internet Exployer, it takes another 5 to 10 minutes. I have Nortons 360 and another anti-virus application that gives me the indication that all is O.K. How can I speed this machine up.

Hello,

I was here a few months ago, with my computer/firefox running slow.

I've had malwarebytes anti malware  running ever since.
A couple weeks ago the computer has literally come to grinding halt.
When I start the computer it takes a couple of minutes to go from the "Starting Windows" screen to the Windows login screen.
From there it take another 3-5 minutes to boot up. I have Soluto installed and I watch all the programs that are being started during boot up and how much extra time has elapsed for everything to load.

I've run spybot search and destroy,  Avast, eset, and SuperAntispyware and nothing has been detected.
All programs have a large lag time from when i dbl click the icons to start them.  They run slow, I type something and there is a delay before I see it on the screen. Also I'm always seeing the "not responding" message.

Here is the speccy link:

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/MzcuTBZF3HP1gYFSP85FccO

I also have the hijackthis and minitoolbox report.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!!

Donato

This forum does not handle malware situations and HJT logs are NOT to be posted in this forum, at any time.  HJT is not a tool used for O/S situations, the focus of this forum.

If you suspect malware issues...this topic needs to be moved to a different forum.  I can do that, if you wish.

Hey,

Out of the blue, my computer started getting slow. Sometimes its ok, and then it will be on the verge of freezing.. then get itself back together. I realized, when I start up, it takes FOREVER. It also shows this screen I have never seen before. Its completely black, and has a line of grey rectangles from side to side... and slowly loads across. When it is finally finished(10-15 minutes) it will slowly start up in regular fashion. Any ideas? I will attach a hijack this in my next post.

Thanks Much.

Hi all.Can anyone please give me some advice.I have a advent lap 7077 and boot up & shutdown is very slow.I have gone to start>run>msconfig and unchecked programmes that are not important to help speed up boot but then I get a message saying I must log on to administrator to make the changes. How do I do that? Is it the name I registered with broadband provider?,I have logged in with this name but to no avail.Am I doing something wrong?.Please can anyone give some simple instructions on how to fix this problem..Many thanks in anticipation.

Answer:Slow Boot & Slow Shutdown!

Control Panel > User Accounts > one will have the word (Administrator) by it > Log into that Account.I assume that you are Defragging regularly and have the usual set-up of an AV, Fire wall, Anti Spyware and Adware. With all their Databases Updated and regularly run.

Hi. Any help appreciated. I have a sluggish computer - alt tabbing is slow, i seem to have regular odd spots of caching my typing and dropped letters. i've done Malwarebytes, Spybot, Avast full scan, Defrag, diskcleanup, sufficient swapspace to 50G. I am confused though about what to get rid of when I look at HijackThis, services.msc, Sysinternals autoruns and process explorer. And I suspect that the fact that my computer is so slow shutting down could have something to do with this. Am wondering if my FF browser itself has issues and am thinking about a reinstall of that. At windows Serivce Pack 3 - has this caused issues? Please let me know if you see anything glaringly obviously bad... (and I've just found the guide for how to make FF run faster... bookmarked for further perusal..)
