Slow and non-responsive

Question: Slow and non-responsive

I have on system that has become very slow and non-responsive. The hard drive light shows constant activity, but the Task Manager CPU usage is running low. I've updated my AVG and ran a scan with Spybot.

I've been running a RootRepeal scan but it's over an hour and no results yet.

Here is my DDS.txt file:

Preferred Solution: Slow and non-responsive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Slow and non-responsive

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. While we are working on your HijackThis log, please: Reply to this thread; do not start another! Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so. Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so! Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work. Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix. Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix. Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.Thanks.

Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting up and I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

#1 Desktop and start menu programs won't respond. Can be clicked and the arrow with hourglass will show up, but with no response. Sometimes clicking on them will freeze and lock up. Sometimes they will, but it is only after several manual shut downs. If it does respond (such as clicking on internet explorer), upon closing out the program it will not respond again without a manual shut down.

#2 Boot up is a lot slower, will stay on "Loading your personal setting... Read more

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the ... My pc has lately as expected gone very slow and not as responsive.
At the start-up especially. I have to wait a good 2mins before touching anything or things start to 'Not respond' and such.

I was wondering if you guys could recommend me ANYTHING that I could do to speed up my pc significantly.
Exclude, formatting my pc / buying new parts.

Thanks for your time.

Answer:Slow/Not responsive

First verify you're defragging your drive regularly. Vista is normally set to do this automatically so I doubt fragmentation has anything to do with it, but you should check to make sure.

Second, run antivirus. Sometimes a virus can slow a PC down. Again, I doubt this has anything to do with a slow PC, but it might.

Third, check your startup programs. If your PC is running slow at startup in particular, one real possibility is that you have a bloated number of programs and services starting up. Go through the list in msconfig and see if there's anything you can disable. Also use the Services console for the same thing.

Post PC specs. You might be low on resources.

I'm a tech at a huge dealership. Some, not all, of our pcs have an issue with IE running really slow and some times not responsive at all. The thing is, all other programs wether it be firefox or some kind of messanger are not affected at all. I originally thought maybe it was some kind of connection issue, but after having both AT&T and the communications company that originally setup our connection come out and verify there is nothing wrong, I'm stuck searching for answers. I know it's not the "temp" or "offline" files as we delete and refresh the pc's all the time.

I'm really at a dead end here and I'm praying some of you guys and girls can help a brother out!

If you have any ideas and need to contact me asap, please feel free to pm me for my cell phone.

Thanks in advance,

-King

Answer:IE V6-8 slow to not responsive?

I recently installed IE8, because my pages were loading very slow and constantly got not responsive. I would click on the mouse several times on page and it would then load quicker, sometimes. This happens with OutLook Express, too. It is still happening.

Question: Responsive slow

I have a custom built desktop. It is Windows XP Professional SP3, Intel Pentium 4 3.20GHZ, 2GB DDR-400. My computer is pretty slow, it takes time to do stuff such as trying to choose a file to burn etc. I usually have to give it 1 minute or more so it can load. I have tried to do a full scan using DrWeb but after a minute of scanning it just randomly freezes, which i have to restart it. So i can't find out if there are other viruses on it. I've tried using sfc /scannow but it keeps saying to insert the XP disc which i did. Other people had told to copy the I386 folder to C: drive and change the registry to run from there but that didn't work. Can someone please help me, this may have a lot issues?

Hi,
I am trying to troubleshoot my sister's laptop and having a really hard time with Windows 8.1. It is very slow, boot up takes several minutes, and pressing the Windows key pops up an empty screen rather than the Metro desktop so I cannot launch anything.
I was planning to replace her hard drive with SSD and upgrade to Windows 10, but even that is now impossible: the free upgrade option is now over, so this machine is stuck with Windows 8.1 unless she invests 166$ just to get Windows 10 or we try a pirated
Win10 which suffers from major activation issues. Trying to downgrade to Windows 7 is a real no go. I did that on my parent's machine and the installation took ages because the system spent more than 3 hours installing updates. Moreover, the contrast between
selected and unselected menu items is very very bad on Windows 7, making it very hard for me to select anything in menus unlessI use the mouse instead of the keyboard.
I will talk to her about Linux, but I'm pretty sure she won't want to try that, as she saw me struggle with so many minor issues on Linux. I am about to give up and recomend her to buy a Mac. This is driving me insane, as I really really hate Mac's, but
at this point, if Windows is such a no go and only newer machines can get Windows 10, I cannot figure out a way out.
Is Windows 8.1 usable if I reinstall it on a SSD, or would only an upgrade to Windows 10 give better performance and stability?

Answer:Computer is very slow and non responsive a lot

have run AVG 2010 AntiVirus, MalawareBytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, TrendMicro Housecall, Micrsoft EssentialsUsing more than one anti-virus program is not advisable. Why? The primary concern with doing so is due to conflicts that can arise when they are running in real-time mode simultaneously and issues with Windows resource management. Even when one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves into the operating systems core and using more than one can cause instability, crash your computer, slow performance and waste system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, they both may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior. Each anti-virus may interpret the activity of the other as suspicious behavior and there is a greater chance of them alerting you to a "False Positive". If one finds a virus or a suspicious file and then the other also finds the same, both programs will be competing over exclusive rights on dealing with that virus or suspicious file. Each anti-virus may attempt to remove the offending file and quarantine it at the same time resulting in a resource management issue as to which program gets permission to act first. If one a... Computer was running fine the previous night, I go to turn in on in the morning noticed it taking an unusually long time to load and then when it finally did the backround and appearance were changed to a much older windows look, which weren't even the defaults when I bought it and it didn't have my old settings saved or anything. I then noticed my internet connection wasn't up and I didnt even see the icon in the toolbar. I tried checking the connection and was told that no internet adapters were found and the menu was blank. I went to the device manager screen and saw that my computer is pretty much no longer picking up most of the hardware. Any programs I tried to run took an eternity to load and if they worked would soon become unresponsive, even basic programs to change comp settings an whatnot would soon become unresponsive and just freeze on the screen. I tried looking for similar problems and fiddling around but I keep getting no where. I am really a noob when it comes to issues like this, my friend who I usually go to for my comp problems has no idea and just suggested reformatting but before I attempt to go dig up those disks and loose everything, I was curious to see if any of you could offer a better solution. Oh and my op sys is win xp

Thanks for your time

Hey guys,

I'm having a lot of trouble just in the last few days. I have a VAIO Laptop (model number is in my info) running Windows XP with SP2. I come home and get the start up screen for Windows XP (the running time meter on the bottom) that stays there for about 5 minutes. I shut it off, rebooted and it was an extended time, but it finally went. Upon the login screen, I log in and the melody it makes for logging on is cut halfway through, as if someone yanked the cord on speakers. Everything is running extremely slow. When I try to actually do anything, the program pretty much becomes non-responsive. Sometimes tryin to End Program on the non-responsive program will not work. The info box asking to send info over the internet appears, however teh program is still running. McAfee virus scanned, first time brought up 11 or 12 items, however I had to go and ended the scan, I dont know if it deleted/quarantined the items or not, but the next time I came home and tried it only found 1 item, which was just a cookie. Also, the scan took upwards of 3-4 hours...Also, my CPU Usage is idling and roaming (currently) around 85-100% which I know is bad. Can't really tell which Process is causing all the usage. Not even running any programs, it is hovering up in those high numbers. The 100% is not a peak either, it stays up there for a while.

Unrelated, maybe: Since I got the computer I thought something may have been off. Frequently, probably most of the time, my computer wou... Read more

Hi,
I have an HP laptop g7-1101sa, about 6 months old. It is an AMD Phenom11 quad-core, 1.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 750GB. And i'm running windows 7.
I have had this about 6 months and it is so slow and unresponsive.
Web pages hang and take about 20 seconds to turn over. It's impossible to have two open programs. When you click on something it just feels as nothing is happening.
I run Norton security, Crap cleaner, malewarebytes, super antispyware. I clean up regularly.
It is so frustrating, half my time is spent shutting windows down because nothing is happening.
Any ideas what is wrong, or should I send it back.
THANKS

Answer:HP laptop unbelievably slow and un-responsive

Norton Security. Uninstall it.
And just use Microsoft Security Essentials instead.

Where's my beer? :confused

You need to add more RAM. I'm running Windows XP & 7 on a partitioned hard disc with a 1.8 GHz Celeron CPU. But, I have 3 GB RAM.
Get rid of AVG and it's so-called Tune Up. Install Avast.

Visit Crucial.com, download the scanner, and you'll know what RAM and how much your PC can use.

Hi, Im new to these forums and have very basic computer knowledge. My computer is at times unresponsive ie it will work then all of a sudden either stop responding, slow right down or completely shut off on its own. I do regular adware checks and also use AVG free antivirus. I also noticed that my norton firewall was disabled, when I restart my computer it is always disabled again, so im always having to turn it on. I did enstall windows defender firewall but it wont open for me at all due to unidentified problem.

Due to space issues on my 'C' drive, where I keep my XP OS, I re-installed and partitioned my HD, as I have done before, but taking some Gb from D and adding it to C.

I have now done three installations of XP, each time with the same problem. The first being the main re-install and format of C and D, the second being only on the C drive and the third being another complete re-install and format of C and D.
Anyway, on each of these attempts I thought everything was going fine, gave the computer a few minutes to fire up and give all the icons, programs, internet and widgets time to sort themselves. However, when I went to use a program, Start menu, icon, pretty much anything I've tried it takes ages to respond, if at all, since I'll probably end up hitting the reset button.

The only reason I'm able to get on this website is because the first thing I did was hit the Firefox icon before everything was sorted and loaded on my desktop.

It would seem that after two or three minutes, during that load time, things do work I.e. Firefox. However, if I leave the computer alone and come back to it in 5 or 10 minutes time then I can expect all facets of the computer to be unresponsive, mega slow to function or just hang on screen - plenty of hourglass action going on.

Any ideas?

Possibly a lot of either downloading of updates (turn off auto update from MS), or anti-virus checking at boot time (depending upon whether or not you have any installed from the installation CD), or a conflict with current hardware and that assumed by an OEM install CD, or a version of XP is installed that is so out-of-date as to fail to work at all.

You only can know what is on your install CD and whether it differs from the current setup. A clue is that you seem to have firefox available from the off. That is not a standard install. You really should only install from a CD wth SP3 slipstreamed, as results can be unpredictable for anything before that. If you think it is internet activity, then install with the internet cable disconnected.

You also need to account for how your 'new' partition is set up. Is it already formatted, or is it unformatted after you have made space, and how indeed did you do the partition change?. I ask this because MS in their almighty wisdom, have subtly changed the NTFS specification without anybody much being aware, but in such a way that partitions created in (say) Win 7 or other recent software, can sometimes turn out to be incompatible with XP of earlier fame. Thus any attempt to write to the HDD sends it into a frenzy of bad-writes.

A solution to that would be to install (again, I know!) into just blank space, so the installer has to format the partition. Dont make it too enormous either, anything over 80Gb might be incompat... Read more

Hi - I just purchased a refurbished IBM T2 Laptop, with Windows XP Professional installed. Worked perfectly until I downloaded Verizon WiFi software. As part of the Verizon WiFi download proceduce, Verizon asked me to download SP3 and Net Framework. And then I downloaded the Verizon WiFi software. The computer will now go through the boot procedure, but opening Windows is extremely slow - approximately 1/2 hour to get to the desktop, which is completely non responsive. I can get to Control Panel/Remove Programs, but cannot remove any programs. I tried Safe Mode, but cannot remove programs from there either. I tried System Restore, no luck there.

I own a copy of Windows XP Home (Upgrade Version). Can I use this to install or correct any problem? Any thoughts?

Many thanks,

Bailiwick

Answer:Unusually Slow And Non Responsive Internet

I apologize for the very long delay. We have a huge backlog of HijackThis Logs to handle and it has been taking us greater time than normal to get caught up. If you are still having a problem, and want us to analyze your information, please post a brand new hijackthis log. If we do not hear back from you within a couple of days we will need to close your topic. When posting your logs please post them directly into the reply. Do not attach them or include them codeboxes going forward.Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious. It is also possible that you may need to disable your Antivirus or Antimalware programs before this program can run properly A guide on how to temporarily disable many of the common protections programs can be found here. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimizedCopy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.

Hello everyone!
Facing an issue for the last couple of weeks - as far as I remember haven't installed any new app, driver or something like that.
So the problem is - after the bootup when I start working on my laptop suddenly apps become slow and not responsive (e.g. when I click on right click menu - shadow appears of context menu and after 5-6 seconds text appears as normal, also, when I drag some icons on my desktop, they get changed after couple of seconds). Moreover, when I open my disks, flash drive - they get oppened with delays of 4-5 seconds.
I am sure that is not the issue of non-microsoft services, as it appears on third-party apps as well (ie Aimp Player, Telegram, Photoshop).
Have tried fragmenting, cleaning up the computer for junk.
Any ideas how can I sort that out?

Hi everyone,

I'm on a Dell Studio 15 with Windows Vista. I'm fully updated as of yesterday.

I generally use my Blackberry as a tethered modem, but a few days ago the internet basically became non-existent. I've gone through all the normal reinstalls and fixes for the tethered modem access...this problem is different.

Windows can find no problem with the connection, but pages simply stick while they are loading. I'm using a public wifi connection right now and the connection is incredibly slow/failing, and giving me strange errors when I try to connect to sites I normally connect to (one was "this website uses incorrect compression", but I seem to have fixed that with a cache clear in FF).

I use IE 8.0.6 and FF 3.6.3.

As I'm using it right now, when I go to download a program in IE or even look up the About IE info, the windows that pop up are acting funny...not closing when I click the X, giving me a not responding error, and acting like they are trying to close but are unable to do so.

Here is my HijackThis log.

Thanks!

Wil

Answer:Internet suddenly non-responsive/very slow

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM ... Read more

My PC has started to run very slowly. It takes a long time to boot up and programs often become non-responsive (eventually they continue) for long periods. Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG pick up nothing. Panda online scan found and disinfected a file calling it a generic trojan (although this file had been on my PC for a considerable time without causing problems) - log attached. I did remove a trojan called Trojan.Dropper.Agent:BJL about a week ago (i think this was picked up by AVG Anti Spyware).

I have vista business, 32g bit, lenovo laptop but with external mouse.

In the last few days since a few updates happened suddenly my scrolling is non responsive and jerky sometimes taking no effect at all. If i click the start menu intermitantly it flashes up and down and up and down and takes about 10 turns to actually work then will open something i didn't click to open.
The clicking of the mouse arrow seems to take no effect when closing down a box and when trying to do simple things like on internet explorer opeing up the bookmars section it clicks shut and opens and shuts and does not seem to work.
Its either incredily juddery and slow working or seems to click to jump quickly through to pages instread of one :0(
I have done all virus scanning and antispywear, have tested the mouse in paint and its fine it seems to be just since a few updates and i noticed yesterday its now so frustrating its almost unusable.
I also noticed the page keeps swimming down the way to the bottom and i have to click the left hand button on the laptop to get it to stop.
Please save my sanity its driving me insane :0(

Answer:Help Slow non responsive scrolling since update

Use system restore to go back to a point prior to the updates. Then set update to notify and not install. Install one at atime and use the computer. When you are satifisfied that it is working properly, install the next. The one that causes the problem should be hidden so it is not reinstalled after you uninstall it.

My computer has been really slow and almost every program or application I run is not responsive for like 5 minutes before finally running properly. However, when I minimize then restore the window it is another 5 minutes of waiting before it works properly. I have attached my Hijackthis log. I am running XP SP2, installed Norton Internet Security Suite yesterday, ran a virus scan and nothing came up. No other symptoms than non-responsive applications at first. If I try to close them through the Task Manager it takes forever before they shutdown too.

Thanks.

The past week or so I've had problems with my laptop. I noticied everything that requires any amount of memory is running slower. I can open most programs, but wait a long time for them to load. Sometimes they crash before loading is complete. I ran Avast in the boot scan mode, which found enough to worry me. I deleted the ones it found, but I bet there's more.  I then ran Mbam and Spybot, which were fine. But my pc is still acting up. I can't even open pictures without having to walk away while stuff loads. Same for trying to open up the task manager, gimp, firefox, etc... It's all hit and miss, sometimes it'll work like everything is normal, sometimes it doesn't do anything at all but lock up. FBAR scan below....Suggestions on what to try next?

I have an ACER Aspire 5250 laptop SNID 20103232016 running Windows 7.  I don't know the cause but the system has started to become very slow at times with windows going unresponsive. To get things moving often opening the task bar (cntr-alt-del) will work. But not for long.

I have run chkdsk with no reported issues, I updated the system bios, and a bunch of hardware drivers. I ran Avira scan, Malwarebytes scan, and the ESET scanner recommended in an earlier similar post with no issues.

Any suggestions?

Answer:PC wont boot, slow or non-responsive in safemode.

Two things you could try would be (1) chkdsk with the option to check for and attempt to repair any bad sectors, and (2) SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt.  If you can boot to Safe Mode or the command prompt, you can do the SFC and schedule the chkdsk (which will require a reboot).

Of course you could always save the data then restore to factory settings too.

Good luck.

Greetings & Salutations... "Your PC needs to be repaired" File: \Boot\BCD  Error code: 0x0000034  I do not have a bootable Windows 7 Ultimate disk.  http://speccy.piriform.com/results/tqePx3pjwwrajUd5tgQgWoi  Five years ago I hired the IT who worked for the company next door to format & load a new SATA II HD in my desktop. Partly because I didn't really want to hassle with it, but more than anything I wanted an advanced opinion on my 1st build from scratch He liked the build, said I chose the components well and I had. For what it is, it screamed. When he handed me my XP Pro disk back he told me he had installed Windows 7 Ultimate & I would like it much more and it'd never go bad... I had concerns immediately & no system disk. When the MS pop ups began I bought a Lenovo laptop & ran it till it cried. I went back to my machine and have endured the MS msgs & decomposition of Windows 7 I have no choice.  The severe issues began 2-3 moths ago when Google's Gmail went haywire and knocked me and hundreds of others around the Country out of commission. Google was no help whatsoever. They suggested going to the Dashboard for updates that never came & advised reinstalling Chrome. I never was contacted & told what it was. Took a Restore Point just to run right, the browser is still not quite right I don't believe, in spite of 2 additional re-installs. I've been cleaning up virus' for the past week and my system is still slow, Windows XP Home.

About 6 months ago, I had to do a system recovery and we lost all the other accounts on this PC except 1 admin account. My son's account also had admin privleges & was "lost". He had partitioned the hard drive and installed Ubuntu - which we are now unable to access.

Is there a way to access this OP & his windows files to delete to free up space?

I will post a Hjack log, thanks for your help!

I am trying to create a DVD using Cyberlink PowerDirector. It reaches 21%, at which point Windows 7 deems it non-responsive and kills it.
I tried it on my old Windows XP machine and noticed that it DOES sit at 21% for a very long time (minutes) but eventually soldiers on to successful completion.

So it seems that Windows 7 is being a bit eager to kill off this task. Is there anyway I can turn off this feature in Windows ... or increase the time it waits ... or exempt a certain .EXE from being axed?

I have tried searching online but of course any search with the term "non-responsive" in it just comes back with thousands of posts on how to kill such tasks, rather than how to not have Windows 7 kill them for me.

TIA
James

Answer:Windows kills a task that appears non-responsive but is just slow

Hello!
I have somewhat the same issue; I use a tool that pulls data out of a SQL server on a Wan, and I have scheduled the extraction using a tool I have scheduled early in the morning so I have my data to work with when I come into office. I know that this is a slow retrival process, but it always completes, even if it takes time. Problem is, Windows Task Scheduler seems to be thinking the task has become unresponsive and kills it.
If you found a way to prevent your tasks from being killed, or have found a way to increase the delay before Windows considers a task non responsive, please let me know!
Thanks!

I followed the instructions in the guide and I finally got Avast antivirus installed on the laptop but was not able to update it as the system would not let it connect to the web site, I ran a boot scan and it did not find anything, then I was able to update the virus scanner and ran a scan and it found 5 or 6 infections which I placed in the chest, then I installed the cc cleaner and ran it and then I could not connect to have it analyzed so the log is gone, now the computer is so slow that it takes about 20 minutes to get to my desktop, and the control panel will not open, when I click on control panel I get a silhouette of the window and the rest is invisible then it closes on its own, also it keeps closing and locking the user after less than 60 seconds, I am so frustrated and confused I don't know what to do now, Please help!! Answer:Toshiba Laptop Super slow and non responsive, was directed to post in the malwar

You have to produce some logs....try running them in safe mode and/or when you save the programs rename them , For example...test.exe or sniper.exe...this will allow the programs to fool the virus.......this may enable you to run them and produce logs for analysis...........You may even have to download the programs to a USB drive and transfer them to the infected pc......Calm down, relax, and someone will get you up and running,,,,

which one would be better for fps gaming (more specifically cs:s)

since they give you the option of changing the responsiveness, i'm guessing this doesn't matter? or does it?

i have a A4 tech mouse that's more very sensitive, while a logitech optical mouse (i think nubius has it, he recommended it to me when i asked for a mouse) that's less sensitive

which would be better (or it doesn't matter?)

Windows GDI update for 2k3. My IIS 6.0 server just started getting flaky on me. Only one website - all ISAPI shutdown - only .asp extensions allowed. URLScan 2.5 installed.

No notice in the logs - just an unresponsive IIS 6.0 server. Doesn't appear crashed, and no insane processes - i.e. no hogs. However, it just goes down - and I have to restart IIS 6.0 to get it running again.

Nothing has changed- except for a patch from microsoft a few days ago that was a "GDI update". Anyone else seeing IIS 6.0 flakyness in the last 2 days?

I thought it might be a DOS or something - but wouldn't a syn attack shut down all my interfaces? Or just the interface in question? What kind of logs would I look for to see some kind of attack? I have Scan Alert which scans my server and reports 0 vulnerabilities. So - at least I have taken care of some of the obvious attacks.

anyone have thoughts for debugging or unravelling this issue?

Thanks

I am trying to restore the computer to original factory settings AKA "AS FURNISHED" because of a crashed hard drive. The F11 key does not let me get to system recovery and the computer goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor - Windows 7 Operating System. I have a boot disk which lets me get to recovery however, system restore does not work as there is only one restore point so I am screwed. I do not have an image to restore to either. Any suggestions?

Question: XP Non Responsive

Ok my brothers PC is having some issues. It will load into XP and all the desktop icons will pop up but you just cant click on anything. I am not sure if it is supported by the forum but I used the latest Hiren's Boot CD 9.9 to boot into mini xp ran spybot search and destroy and kapersky - came back with nothing. Also tried other programs but no others seem to work. Anyone know anything about this and the PC problem? Thanks

Answer:XP Non Responsive

Try booting into Safe Mode. If that works, you can try running MalwareBytes and SpyBot Search & Destroy from there.

If it doesn't, try booting from the XP CD and performing a Repair.

Answer:XP NON RESPONSIVE

First, turn off the caps lock key, unless it is broken too. That is considered rude.To get any meaningful help you need to give some information about the system, how old it is, when the problem started, other problems with it, what happened unusual right before it.So info on the computer including the make and model number and the power supply, including maker and wattage (it's on the side of the power supply inside the case).See below. We'll be waiting for your responses.

Question: XP non responsive

Hi

Earlier today I installed Outpost Free Internet Security, it crashed my network connection so I uninstalled it, then had to perform system restore. Then I opened MS Outlook and PC turned itself off immediately and restarted. Message came up that Windows had recovered from a serious error.
Came on tonight no programs would open, i have put Xp disk in to try and fix and it seems okay(ish).
Other anomaly is that i keep getting message " this computer has undergone significant hardware changes since Xp installed and XP needs reactivation within 3 days. I have had to do this on average once a month including today.
I rang Microsoft to activate over the phone and spoke to a real, very helpful person who also found it strange that it keeps asking to reactivate.

Anyway I have attached the logs from event log, dont know where else to look for errors. Please if you can help i would appreciate it as I am pulling my hair out.

Di

Answer:XP non responsive

Quote:

What is Okay(ish) really mean? does the computer work properly, and do all of your programs work? You do not have to include all of the logs. Just instances with a red X the yellow warnings don't mean that much, and the logs are too long to read through.
You can do some maintenance. Go to Start/Run and type chkdksk C: /R and press enter. Then press a Y for Yes and then restart the computer. Check Disk will run at next bootup to fix any file errors. You can also go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow and press enter. Put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing files from the CD. If you don't have a current Anti-Virus Software, download the free Microsoft Security Essentials (do not have more then one AV software program on your computer at a time) and do a full scan. Also go to Start/Run and type dfrg.msc and press enter, highlight the C: drive and press Defrag Now.

Question: IE Not Responsive

I hope I am posting in the right place. My Windows 7 pc has been acting up for quite a while. I am not sure if it's an ISP issue or just my pc. When I am running IE or Firefox or Chrome, my websites become non-responsive. Or I will click on a link and nothing happens. It is very "jumpy" meaning pages seem to lock and then switch to new pages after some time has passed. I get the message box pop-up saying that IE is uisng so much RAM and it is usually over 250 MB. I am not sure if it's a hardware issue or internet issue. I did a speedtest and came back over 4 mbps. My issues seem to get worse by the evening. I don't have many issues when using software...just internet websites.

Question: Non-responsive HDD

(I'm sending this from wife's laptop so TSG Sysinfo not much use!)
System: 'Advent' tower PC, Intel Core i7 3440 3.4Ghz Quad Core CPU; 12Gb RAM (DDR3); 2Tb HDD (Seagate)(SATA), using Windows 7.

Sequence of events:
1 Attempted to reboot PC following a minor update but PSU did not power up - it wasn't a particularly quite unit so silence pointed to a PSU fault. On removing the cover, the CPU cooling fan was not operating either, confirming no power.

2 The OEM PSU (CWT GPA450P) was not easily replaceable. Having had to replace PSUs in earlier PCs, I opted for a Corsair CX500M. At this point, I committed the cardinal sin of not practising what I used to preach before I retired - having replaced PSUs before, I did not think I needed to RTFM! Having removed the faulty PSU, I unpacked the replacement and fitted the black box in position before noticing that there were some significant differences between the OEM PSU's 'open' cable loom and the Corsair's sleeved loom. One of these difference was that instead of the 'old fashion' direct cable links to the SATA devices, there was a variety of alternative modular connectors. Had I read the Manual, of course, I would have seen that these plug into the PSU via black sockets on the face of the black CPU box but at this point, they were now hidden in the dark depths between the PSU and the back end of the DVD drive housing. Instead, I looked around for a connector that fitted a 4-pin ... Read more

Answer:Non-responsive HDD

Hello, unfortunately there is a very good chance that the HDD was damaged by the psu incident. The easy way to determine that would be to remove the hdd and then hold it while the pc is turned on. You should be able to hear and feel the platters spinning. After that, just to make sure, you can use a sata to usb adapter and plug it in to a different computer and see if it detects it.

Hi, I cleared a trojan out of my system about 3 weeks back and for some reason I can't use the taskbar whenever I restart. I've downloaded TaskbarPlusRepair tool program and the only way I can actually use the taskbar is by using this program each time I restart, which is beginning to get quite tedious... Each time I use it, the program restarts the Windows Shell thing, does anyone know how to just have this start up along with everything else?
Thanks

Okay, I've Googled this and tried a couple of websites looking for an answer, but so far no luck. At times, for no appartent cause, everything in my taskbar will suddenly become completely non-responsive. I can click away all I want on "Start", on quick launch items, on minimized programs, on icons in the system tray ... nothing, nada, zilch. When I go into the control panel and click on "Taskbar & Start Menu", the same ... no response. It just sits there in sullen indifference (that last bit is peotic licence). The only cure is a reboot.
Can anyone shed some light?
Thanks!!

I bought a MS Wireless Optical Mouse some time ago. The installation was not a problem, however I have a very strange problem in that for no apparent reason sometimes the mouse will have no or very delayed responsiveness to clicks and scrolls.

This is very annoying and when I use the spirit of the irritation built up to press the button harder this will most often on 3rd or 4th occasion get the mouse in action. After a while it the non responsiveness stops (10 minutes to one hour) and the mouse will work fine again. It is not normally a problem on start up.

I have changed batteries, reset the mouse "receiver", installed more RAM (now have 512 MB) and nothing has helped.

Can anyone out there please help me as this is very frustrating.

Finally, if I use the keyboard (when possible) there is no delay, only when using the mouse (so if I cannot scroll with the mouse there is no problem using the arrows up and done for example)...

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! Will be much appreciated.

Brgds
Bobby

I have An ECS K7S5A Pro mother board with a keyboard that won't respond. This is one of the stangest issues I have have ever come across dealing with keyboards. When the computer boots it will boot into Windows XP and the keyboard will not respond but the mouse responds and device manager shows no keyboard listed and no conflicts. Then when you reboot the computer and try to access the bios the the key board still won't respond and the computer boots into Windows as before. No "no keyboard" errors are posted on boot up. I have tried all of the standard trouble shooting techniques (trying different keyboards switching cables etc...). Is the anybody that has come across a systoms like this? I am reluctant to condem this MB because I don't know for sure whats wrong Thanks Scott

Answer:Non responsive Key board

Is the keyboard standard PS/2 or the USB kind ( too lazy to check on the specs of the board).
But let's assume that the keyboard is the PS/2 kind. If you tried the usual "song and swap" and still no response, then it's the board chip that is messing up. I would give it a last shot, but looking on the mobo and trying to clear up the CMOS if you haven't tried it yet.

Hi i've encountered an issue which I can't solve by myself.

My PC has been incredibly stable up until today - booting suddenly takes forever, explorer takes ages while loading icons on my desktop, trying to use right mouse button or open folders results in complete hang of the system. If i wait long enough until all desktop icons are loaded, i can even open browser and some folders but eventually explorer or PC hangs anyway, not to mention that everything is working sluggish.

I can open the task manager and check resource usage, also AIDA actually load successfully and according to them - there is no increase in CPU or RAM loads.

I've tried running Eset online scanner and I've checked my system disk with Avast! - they didn't find anything. I've used hijackthis but found no suspicious entries. I've also used combofix but it found only some harmless .dlls none of which were unknown to me.

I am able to load Vista in safemode without non essential programs but the issue exists even there, despite slightly faster booting and icon loading times.

Unfortunately I cannot use system restore and even though I do have complete pc archive - so far I wasn't able to use it, since it's not available in safemode and during normal boot my PC usually hangs before I am able to get to control panel.

At this point I've exhausted all known options and solutions and would welcome any help or suggestions whatsoever. Could it be sudden hardware issue? If so - what could be respons... Read more

Hi,

As in the heading of my thread...my PC keeps freezing and is Non-responsive. I have just formatted the HDD and reinstalled WinXP.

It takes forever to open some pages and I have 1gb of ram. My HDD is 120gb and the motherboard is 3.0ghz.

I have a LG DVD burner which is another problem.......and a Nvidia video card

Major software installed is

Win XP home edition with SP2
Bullguard Anti virus
Opera internet browser
PC on point registery fixer
Assorted Popcap games
Microsoft Office for XP
Limewire
Messenger
123 copy dvd

I only know the basics about PC's but I thought that my PC should be a lot faster than it is. I have downloaded all updated drivers for everything.

I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction to fix whatever problem my PC has.

When it becomes unresponsive and I manage to get the task manager oopen..my CPU usage is only about 5%

Thanks

Answer:Freezing and Non-Responsive PC

It might be that registry fixer you got there. I remember at one point i had one and after i ran it, my computer would let me logon, but after a few mins it would restart, and i couldnt get it to stop, until i reformated. So you might try re-format again and dont install or run that registry fixer. If that don't fix it try hitting it with a hammer :knock: !!

Best of Luck.

Now don't get me wrong here. I like Emsisoft and how it operates. But lately I've been playing my usual games from Steam and from some of my online games like Mortal Online and Elsword, when Emsisoft suddenly steps in saying they're giving off suspicious behaviour.
This has gotten my interest piqued as to why Emsisoft would react to my games like this, especially my Steam games. I recently got Planetside 2 and during play Emsisoft came up with 2-3 reactions.
Is this to be expected of Emsisoft? or would this be a cause for concern?

Answer:Emsisoft being a tad too responsive?

Hi IllusionEclipse,If these games are official Steam games then I'd tend to say that these are false-positives. Any change you can upload the flagged file(s) to http://www.virustotal.com and post a link to the scan results here? I can then have a closer look at this.

Last night I was showing a young child my FSX, and all the things that you could do with it. Somehow he started playing with the keyboard and the next time I opened up FSX the joystick movements were not responding in the aircraft. I checked it out by using FS 2004, and no problem, it worked fine, so the connection wasn't the problem. I think it must have been due to the kid playing on the keyboard which made the jostick unresponsive when using FSX. Can you help please.

Answer:FSX - non responsive joystick

this happens to me alot using my flight stick and xbox360 controller. when you start up fsx keep your flight stick unplug till you get passed the loading screen. pause your fsx plug in the flight stick and wait for a minute for the computer to load it in now go to your controller and see if it is active you might have to select it rather then the mouse for controlles. also add if you have fsuipc. cause it could be the problem as well always good idea to add it when asking for assistance. because it has speacail key and joystick assignments as well

Hi! I have been having an issue with my touchscreen... it doesn't respond at all. My laptop is the HP Pavillion Notebook 15 in touchsmart (N5P48UA#ABA). It is running on (freshly updated) Windows 10, and is only 5 months old. The Issue: Several days ago my touch screen stopped responding - at first it was intermittent on-and-off. As of recent it has not been functioning period. Everything else works fine on the laptop, and there are no damages or cracks in the screen. Steps I have taken to resolved the issue (all have failed):I cleaned off the screen with a screen-wipe I restarted my laptopI restored the laptop to factory settingsI received chat support and then remote support from HP (didn't do anything)I spent over an hour on the phone with HP support (wasted time)And of course, I have done plenty of research on the internet. Conclusions that may aid a solution. After spending a ton of time trying to fix this, I know what the problem is not. In Device Manager there are only two drivers listed under Human Interface Devices (HID- compliant wireless radio controls & HP Wireless Button Drive). Its almost like the touch screen driver... doesn't even exist. As a side note, while the touchscreen was working, There were several more drivers listed under the HID section... its almost like they dissapeared. On the HP site, there are drivers that you can download, but the HID drivers that I need are not listedThe touch HID drivers are not ... I have a computer running XP SP2 + all updates to date, for a few months now when you go to press the start button the system can take upto 30-60 seconds to respond, once it does your right for another few minutes then stop's responding for another 30-60 seconds and keeps repeating this cycle. I have checked all running processors and there doesn't seem to be anything there that should be.

My initial thinking is that it's trying to check something which holds the system up regular???? Anyone else have this or seen this problem???

Thanks in advance!!

(History) three weeks ago my old mobo became non responsive i did all test to test mobo (removed RAM no beeps, touch cpu not hot to the touch).
So I decided to replace everything except hard drive. I purchased: MSI 785gm-E51 MOBO, AMD athlon ll X3 440 Triple Core cpu, geforce 9500gt gpu, coolmax 140mm 600watt psu, hyper n520 cpu cooler, OCZ ddr3 RAM. I put it all together worked great for 10min +/- had all drivers installed for hardware was running benchmark test on Gpu. Then screen went black no signal from mobo. No error beeps from mobo when RAM is removed, psu fan runs, cpu fan runs and gpu fan runs. Same problem i had with first mobo. And my question is could there be something on my hard drive causing my mobo failures?

OK where do I start

Yesterday (sept [email protected] around 8pm) evening I was prompted to update Mozilla, to the newer 3.5.3. I did just that, after the update it required a restart, did that, I clicked on Mozilla icon to continue my browsing, Mozilla would not load. So now I go and click on the Norton icon to run a scan and see if everything is ok. Norton will not respond either, just the hour glass shows up and then disappears. I go and click on IE and see if that will run for me, it does, and it is slow real slow, I have not used IE for at least 2 years, I figured it was the version I am running.

I decide to restore the laptop back 2 days to get my old browsers versions back, no dice, that was all for last night.

Today I restore the laptop back to AUG 18 and it told me nothing had changed, I was left scratching my head, I installed at least 15 updates the past 3 days, so something should have changed. I tried Norton again, no dice it wont even allow me to get support. I decided after chatting with a fellow fisherman to un install mozilla, and download and run Malwarebytes Anti- Malware. It pulls 268 infected files out, 3 of which are trojan files I restart the laptop and rerun this again and get 42 more files.

I try Norton again, nothing, I re install Mozilla nothing, I try Opera, nothing. Next I download and install Super Anti Spyware save it on my desktop, and restart the laptop in safe mode and run a full scan with SAS it gets 49 more files one of which is a Trojan.media-cod... Read more

Got a solicited Outlook email which I opened.
That brought up several major areas or topics with the option to select one by cuing on a "button" for that one.
However, that accomplishes nothing, regardless of whether I click with the left or right mouse button. There are no url's, (?) to copy or select, nor could I find anything else to select or cue to open the sub category.
Not sure what is going on! Why set things up so one can select a topic if selecting does nothing.
Almost sounds like I designed it, and I am an illiterate computer illiterate

my power strip that i have my computer, printer, etc hooked up to is located under my desk, where your feet are. the other day i accidentally hit the plug for the power supply to the computer and the comp turned off, so i restarted it.

my printer doesn't work any more after the comp came back on, everything else was fine (the printer is a HP officejet 4110). and by doesn't work, i mean that there is nothing showing on the printer's screen, and the little green light that is normally green now flashes green for a few seconds and then starts flashing orange/red very very quickly. when you turn off the printer, the computer says "found new hardware". so i put the installation disc in my cd drive and tried to reinstall the software, and it says the software couldn't be installed because it can't find the right software. i then make sure it's searching my D drive (cd drive) where i put the printer's software installation cd into, and it still says it can't find it.

what should i do? i am running win xp service pack 2 BTW

Answer:Non-responsive printer...

Hey everybody this is my first post on Techguy,

The reason Im posting is because My Laptop, which ive had for about a year now, Is an HP dv1000 model if I remember correctly( im in the library right now) and when I went to turn it on saturday afternoon all it did was turn on and stay on a black screen, it did not respond to me pressing any button at all and even my wireless usb mouse didnt get signal. I left it on untill the batter ran out to see if that worked and when I turned it back on it was still the same. I also tried putting a music CD in but that didnt affect it at all. Sorry if this is in the wrong section but Im not sure where the problem is coming from.

Thanks in advance

I think I pretty much know the answer to this question however I'm in a slight dilemma.

I have an HP laptop here with the trackpad not responding at all. I dug all of the viruses out of it and reinstalled the drivers several times, as well as a system restore from 10 days ago. But the trackpad still didn't work. I considered re-imaging it since it has a recovery partition with a factory-loaded default image, but instead I decided to pop in a Linux LiveCD.

Upon booting Ubuntu, the trackpad still didn't work.

I checked all Fn keys. Nothing helped activate it. There's also a dedicated on/off button by the trackpad. It of course is enabled.

I think it's pretty safe to say it's hardware related, but my tools are at work and this is bugging the **** out of me. Is there anything else you guys think I should try before I crack this thing open tomorrow?

Answer:Trackpad Not Responsive.

There is a cable that connects that trackpad to the MB, while you do have to take a lot of the laptop apart to get to this cable it isan't as hard to get to as the processor. I agree, it does sound hardware related (assuming you've hooked up an external mouse and it worked) and if the plug is fine, you may need to replace the track pad.

My Pavilion laptop has a button right above the trackpad that turns it off - stupid i know but just make sure that light is on if your laptop has that button.

Sometimes my XP machine (P4 2.6ghz, 512ram) gets in these weird cycles where some of the buttons on applications wont respond to me clicking on them, and sometimes, it switches the left click for right clicking. This seems to happen more often when I leave the computer on for a while.

Any ideas for fixes ?
I guess I should also mention that this seems to happen regardless of what type of mouse/keyboard im using, and whether its ps2 or usb connection.
